amazing alumni It seems like only yesterday we were cheering them on to victory as little boys and girls. Coached by moms and dads with more heart than experience—having a good time and trying their best were the only necessary requirements. Okay— that and donuts after the game. Hours upon hours of practice morphed post game snacks into post game interviews for notable Dragons like Jack LeVant, Jacob Doddridge and Stephen Blomstrom. Now trained by some of the area’s best and most experienced coaches Dragon athletes regularly hold court with reporters well after the final whistles blow. Like so many Dragons before them, this trio of student athletes will honor their talents and dreams through athletic scholarships—to Stanford University, Rice University and Pomona College, respectively. In college, they will grow and continue the tradition of success at the next level. If

As noted, Carroll’s domination of the swimming and diving scene in North Texas continued last weekend in Lewisville at the District 5-6A Championships, where the Dragons and Lady Dragons swept the team titles. By advancing athletes in 34-of-36 boys spots and 29-of-36 girls positions, Carroll has placed itself in position to once again contend for podium spots at state, where the Dragons have won seven consecutive state titles and the Lady Dragons have achieved similar acclaim, including multiple championships. At the district meet, Carroll’s boys took first in the 200-yard medley relay, the 200 free relay and the 400 free relay, while the Lady Dragons took first in the 200 medley and 200 free relays with a second-place showing in the 400 free relay. Gold-medal performances individually were procured by Jack LeVant (200 free and 500 free), Kevin Repice (200 IM), Jackson Miller (1-meter diving), Logan Davis (100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke), Landon Armstrong (100 free) and Jack VandeBerg (100 backstroke) on the boys side. For the Lady Dragons, Natalie Whalen (200 IM and 500 free), Bridget O’Neil (1-meter diving) and Kit Kat Zenick (100 butterfly and 100 backstroke) each won gold in their respective events.

S E A S O N U P D AT E The year has changed, but the results remained the same (as they typically do) for Carroll’s boys and girls swimming and diving teams. During the the District 5-6A Championships Jan. 20 at the Lewisville ISD Westside Aquatic Center, the Dragons and Lady Dragons cruised their way to sweep the team titles. The Dragons totaled 259 points, well in front of second-place Flower Mound (109) and qualified swimmers or divers for regionals in 34 of the 36 available slots. The Lady Dragons (236), meanwhile, topped the Lady Jaguars for first and advanced athletes in 29 of the 36 possible positions. The Dragons also dominated at the Region 2 Championships also in Lewisville. Both the boys and girls doubled the scores of their nearest competitors en route to qualifying all six relay teams, five divers and 22 swimmers for the Class 6A state meet held Feb. 16-17 at the Texas Swim Center on the University of Texas campus.

ABOUT THE TEAM The Dragons hit the ground running in the sixth season under McDade. Carroll is racking up points at a record pace, averaging 72 points per game. Blomstrom leads the way at 16.7 per game, including 66-of-159 (42 percent) from 3-point land, while chipping in three rebounds and 1.5 steals per game. Haddock isn’t far off with 62 long-range conversions and has the team lead for free throws, making 99 out of 123 attempts. McBride, in addition to scoring 13.3 points per game (while shooting better than 50 percent from the field), paces the squad with 5.6 rebounds per game. Carroll’s contributions extend far beyond their top three scorers; however. Jonathan Zapinski has been a consistent spark in the arm as a sixth-man for the Dragons, according to McDade. Seniors Hudson Taylor, Gabe Dato and Cam Cozzens bring a veteran presence to the squad. McDade also praised Bryce Zavodnick for his energy defensively.

The Dragons are in a prime position as they are seeking a return to the playoffs after missing out in District 5-6A last year. Carroll piggy-backed a strong nondistrict slate to a sizzling start in 5-6A, winning its first four games before hitting the halfway mark at 5-2 — tied for second behind reigning champ Hebron. Following two non-district wins, the season really kicked off with Carroll’s annual trip to the Magnolia Tournament, where a team that entered the season with just two varsity returners had little difficulty gelling. The Dragons posted a 3-1 record while playing a tempo that set the tone for the season, including posting 97 points in a win over San Antonio Taft and 104 in a win over host Magnolia. Following a 3-1 showing at the Arlington Martin Tournament, Carroll tacked on two more non-district wins before taking first at the Keller Central tourney. After racking up 86 points in a win over Mansfield, the Dragons were ready for district and rolled to three wins before topping the Hawks in a thriller at home, 70-69. Head coach Eric McDade sat at 20-4 at the district midpoint with the Dragons’ 20 wins already equaling a goal set for the entire season. Over their first 24 games, the Dragons were averaging nearly 72 points per game and already set the program record for 3-pointers in a season. DRAGONPRIDE

ABOUT THE TEAM While the Lady Dragons are short on years, potential talent is prevalent across the roster, including returning all-district performers Abby Zeitsiff (second team), Jillian Sowell (honorable mention) and Kayla Colan (honorable mention). Thus far, Zeitsiff has paced the team with 12.1 points per game, including converting a team-high 69 3-pointers. Sowell chips in eight rebounds per contest, while Colan dishes out a team-best 3.2 assists. Down low, the Lady Dragons’ attack is powered by Anna Gilliatt, who averages nearly a double-double on 53-percent shooting and was described by Morrison as a “throwback” player. Carroll also received reinforcements midway through the season in transfer Faith Knight. Through four games on the court, she has posted 7.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and two assists per game, while freshmen Brittney Flexer and Jordyn Sowell have been consistent contributors alongside junior Lydia Ditthardt. With Morrison expecting the team to only improve, the Lady Dragons will be tough to keep out of the playoffs.

we’re very young, but our progress and execution on offense has been outstanding — T eri Morrison, Varsity Head Coach

10 • WINTER ’18

In the 2016-17 season, the Carroll’s girls basketball team missed out on the postseason for the first time in nine years. But head coach Teri Morrison had the Lady Dragons back in the playoff hunt this season as the squad hits the homestretch in District 5-6A tied for the fourth and final playoff berth with Hurst L.D. Bell. Both teams are two games clear of sixthplace Marcus. Morrison is more than pleased with the start for the Carroll squad that came in lacking experience at the varsity level. “Offensively, we’ve really made great strides and do a great job of sharing the ball,” she says. “I like the effort, and I really like the chemistry we’ve developed.” But Morrison noted if Carroll wants to reach its goal of qualifying for the playoffs, improvements will be necessary defensively and on the boards, particularly when they play zone defense opposed to man-to-man. The Lady Dragons entered the year with minimal varsity experienced. That youth translated during non-district competition as Carroll posted a sub500 record. However, Carroll began to take strides prior to 5-6A action and opened district with a 4-2 start, including a big win over co-leader Lewisville. That win came on the road, where the Lady Dragons have thrived so far according to Morrison. DRAGONPRIDE

ABOUT THE TEAMS Carroll’s cross country teams continued their excellence in 2017 with the Dragons and Lady Dragons both reaching the podium for the 13th time in 15 years. Leonard attributes this year’s success to cohesion and a team dynamic, and it showed in Carroll’s postseason results, particularly at the state meet in Round Rock. The Lady Dragons didn’t place a single runner in the top 15 despite all five scorers registering personal-best times. Those efforts resulted in tight grouping (17-31) that propelled Carroll to the bronze medal. Junior Sofia Santamaria paced the squad at state in 17th (18:26.91), while Leonard praised Sarah McCabe for a “big senior year” and Cate Tracht for her consistency. The Dragons were also shut out of the top 10 but had all five scorers in the top 28 following lifetime runs. The result was a second-place finish behind Conroe The Woodlands. Junior Jack Myers was first to cross the line in 13th (15:33.31) followed by senior Jackson Felkins in 14th (15:36.21) and senior Juan Arcila in 16th (15:39.14). Carroll’s depth extended past its scorers, as well, as Leonard credited his sixth- and seventh-place runners for taking potential points away from opponents. And as the 2017 season can certainly attest, every point counts in Texas cross country.

The Lady Dragons punched their ticket to Old Settlers Park in Round Rock for a stunning 21st consecutive season in 2017. Head coach Justin Leonard’s crew didn’t stop there, earning a bronze medal to reach the podium for the 18th time during their stellar state streak. That wasn’t the best performance for a Carroll cross country team as the Dragons — competing at state for an eighthstraight year — notched a silver medal in the boys race. Carroll’s path to state included strong non-district action, before a postseason march that began by getting out of the aptly named “District of Doom.” That would be 5-6A, where top-five Marcus (girls) couldn’t even advance to regionals, and three teams finished in the top four at state. At regionals, the Dragons and Lady Dragons finished third and second, respectively, with the boys claiming gold and the girls bronze at district. The Lady Dragons took first at the Nike South Regional meet en route to placing 20th at the national meet, while the Dragons earned second at Nike South and finished 19th at nationals.

ABOUT THE TEAM The Dragons are ranked in the top five in the state according to wrestlingtexas. com in both the dual and tournament formats and have a trio of competitors ranked either first or second in the state in their respective weight classes set to take aim at state titles. Leading the way is senior Cameron Haddock, who is a gold-medal contender at 152 pounds with a 26-4 record thus far. At 195 pounds, senior Jake Johnson (32-6) is looking to follow up on a thirdplace performance at state a year ago, while 220-pounder Jacob Doddridge (15-2) placed fourth and has high hopes to reach the podium in late February. Head coach Joe Hathaway noted that freshman Owen Hollaway, junior Ben De Lemos, senior Ryan Dooley, senior Cade Duval and senior Zach Barz are also in the mix to place at regionals and potentially advance to state. Overall, Hathaway believes all 14 Carroll varsity wrestlers are expected to advance to regionals. Coach Rachael Mahlow’s girls team is relatively young with much room to grow. Sophomores like Gabby Kilpatrick, Kylie Lostetter and Claire Kennedy are working hard and leading a team that is getting better every day.

Leading the way with eleven ranked wrestlers competing at the UIL Regional Championships set for Feb. 22-24, Southlake Carroll’s wrestling team appears to be in prime position to excel. This after celebrating an undefeated district record in dual meets. With two dual-matches remaining during the regular season (including a match against unbeaten Keller Timber Creek), the Dragons have yet to suffer a loss on the season, going 14-0 in duals. The Dragons have excelled on the tournament scene, including multiple trips out of state. Head coach Joe Hathaway noted the squad had an impressive showing at the Outlaw tourney in Oklahoma before heading to the Gut Check Challenge in Washington — where the squad placed 12th out of 60 teams. The results add up to a No. 4 ranking according to wrestlingtexas.com in both the dual team format and in tournament team. Following district, Carroll’s competitors will be gunning for Region I berths in a region that boasts six of the state’s top 10 teams. DRAGONPRIDE

ABOUT THE TEAM Carroll quickly climbed the national rankings with a strong non-district campaign, including a first-place finish at the PSA Lone Star Circle of Champions Tournament. Middle blocker Annabelle Smith played her way to Offensive Player of the Year honors in the district, finishing the season with 533 kills while hitting at 42 percent. Her dominance extended far beyond the offensive side of the net as she also paced the Lady Dragons with 112 blocks while chipping in 105 digs. Freshman outside hitter Natalie Glenn took home the district’s Newcomer of the Year honors while junior McKenzie Nichols claimed the top setter award. Glenn was key to Carroll’s serve-receive, was second on the squad in digs (518), notched 34 blocks and put down 466 kills — a majority of which came courtesy of Nichols (1,069 assists, 353 digs). Dig-leader and senior Sabrina Monaco was a first-team selection, as was junior outside hitter Harper Hallgren.

16 • WINTER ’18

The Lady Dragons suffered a setback before the season even began when reigning District 5-6A MVP and Texas pledge Asjia O’Neal opted to bypass her senior season. After a 38-8 season, Carroll produced consistent results under head coach Ryan Mitchell. The team had a lengthy playoff run and spent the season as one of the top-ranked teams in the state and the nation. The campaign for Mitchell’s squad began with the annual trip to Pearland for the prestigious Adidas Josh Turner Volleyball Classic where the Lady Dragons posted a 5-2 mark to finish seventh. After taking fifth at the Northwest ISD Classic, Carroll put a stamp on its strong non-district slate with a first-place finish at the PSA Lone Star Circle of Champions Tournament. The Lady Dragons win streak reached 17 matches before suffering a 3-2 loss to eventual 5-6A and state champ Hebron. Carroll would eventually tie for second in a district that would go on to post a 12-3 combined record in the postseason and had four teams ranked at some point. The bi-district and area rounds posed no problem for the Lady Dragons, with Carroll cruising to sweeps of Plano Senior and Copperas Cove, respectively. But a Trophy Club Byron Nelson team that split with Carroll in 5-6A action dashed the state aspirations of the Lady Dragons in the regional quarterfinals with a 3-1 win. DRAGONPRIDE

Seniors Ashley Kim and Taylor Reusche powered the Lady Dragons and entered the year with plenty of momentum after reaching the regional semifinals last spring in doubles. Senior Mahi Raju was a steady winner at No. 3 for Aldridge’s bunch, and teamed with junior Tiffany Landgraff at line-two doubles. District titles are the norm at Carroll under head coach Corey Aldridge, and the fall of 2017 was no different. Behind a veteran roster that featured 11 seniors, the Dragons dominated District 5-6A competition, outscoring the opposition a staggering 124-9 en route to a perfect 7-0 mark. It was the seventh-consecutive district title for the Dragons, who showed no let up early in the postseason. Carroll needed only the minimum 10 matches to top Denton Guyer in the bidistrict round before a 14-0 landslide win over Belton in the area round. But the Dragons ran into what Aldridge described as their “Achilles heel” in Plano West during the regional quarterfinals. Carroll put up a valiant effort in a 10-5 defeat against eventual state semifinalist, and finished the season ranked No. 5 in the state with a 19-4 overall record. The Dragons bested plenty of other state-ranked foes along the way, including Coppell and Allen. The only hiccups came against West to open and close the season, and a pair of non-district losses to 5A state champ Highland Park. DRAGONPRIDE

When Dreams Become Reality Stanford-Bound Jack LeVant Just Keeps Swimming NOW TOWERING AT ABOUT 6’ 3”, IT’S HARD TO IMAGINE JACK LEVANT CLUTCHING A STANFORD UNIVERSITY SWIM CAP AS A NINE YEAR OLD. AND WHILE JACK HAD ALREADY BEEN SWIMMING FOR SEVERAL YEARS BY THAT POINT, THAT’S WHEN THE STANFORD DREAM STARTED.

BY MALEESA JOHNSON PHOTOS BY BLUDOOR STUDIOS

“You don’t really think that much about it when they’re that young,” his mom, Michelle LeVant says, her voice cracking with emotion. “Now here he is, getting ready to go to swim at Stanford.” His coach gave that swim cap as a reward for breaking a minute in the 100-yard freestyle. For eight years since then, the cap has been in a frame, hanging on his wall. During that time, Jack has been training, sweating, waking up early, studying and staring at that cap on his wall. In June last year, he proved that all of his hard work had paid off by verbally committing to Stanford University.

TWO TEAMS, ONE GOAL Anyone who watches sports movies knows that the workout scenes are usually comprised of quick, inspirational montages. It’s fun to watch, but viewers know that in reality, those montages represent hours upon hours of hard work and commitment. That couldn’t be more true for Jack. He trains before school with the Southlake Carroll Swim Team. Then, he grabs breakfast at the cafeteria and goes to class. Now as a senior, he has off periods, but that wasn’t always the case. After class, he goes 22 • WINTER ’18

home, takes a quick nap and heads to train with the North Texas Nadadores – a club swim team. But not just any club team. The North Texas Nadaores has churned out a myriad of high level swimmers, including 2016 Olympic medalist Katie Meili, Olympic qualifier and current Texas Longhorn Brett Ringgold as well as Olympic trial competitor and Texas Longhorn Jonathan Roberts. “It’s not easy,” Jack says. “Getting out of bed early when it’s cold just to go get in a cold pool. It requires a lot of motivation.” For Jack, a lot of that motivation comes from his teammates. He says his high school swim team is more focused on the team while club swimming is more about the individual. And while Jack is certainly working toward his own goals, he pushes himself for his team as well. “Our focus is always on the team,” Southlake Carroll Swim coach Kevin Murphy says. “Our boys brought home the seventh state title in a row and we plan to do it again. It’s the team that drives success.” Indeed, Southlake is no stranger to success in the pool. Coach Murphy says that of the estimated 8,000 students in Carroll ISD, 750 of them are part of a club or school swimming team. “We’re really blessed,” he says. “Southlake is a special place for swimming.” DRAGONPRIDE

However, this much popularity around the sport makes getting on a team that much more competitive, much less two teams. And of course, being on two teams with different coaches could present its own set of challenges. Thankfully for Jack, he says the coaches are cohesive in their training. “I’m really fortunate,” he says. “My coaches know each other and are great to work with. Their workouts don’t contradict each other.”

‘NORMAL TEENAGE STUFF’ Between the two teams, Jack puts in over 20 hours of training per week. When he isn’t working out or swimming, Jack says he enjoys doing what he calls “normal teenage stuff:” hanging out with friends and listening to music. There isn’t always much time for that, though. On top of a rigorous athletic schedule, Jack is taking AP classes and keeping his grades up. “Stanford doesn’t cut any corners just because he is an athlete,” Michelle says. “If people are wondering if those AP classes matter, they absolutely do.”

THE LONG LANE TO STANFORD By now, it’s probably pretty clear that Jack has the motivation and discipline of a professional athlete. If you haven’t picked up on that, here is what his coach has to say about him: “Jack has an incredible work ethic,” Coach

24 • WINTER ’18

Murphy says. “More than that, he is very talented, humble and coachable.” And while character references are valuable, how about a few statistics to back them up? For example, In December, Jack set the new SC Junior Nationals meet record in the men’s 500 freestyle. His time of 4:14:04 blew the previous meet record (4:15.36) out of the water and set a personal best by almost four seconds. To put it in perspective, the current record holder for Boys’ 17-18 U.S. National Age Group Records posted a time of 4:12:33 in 2004. You may have heard of him... Michael Phelps. That’s right, Jack is only about one and a half seconds away from beating a national record held by an international legend. Moreover, he was chosen for the U.S. Junior World team this summer. He competed in the 4x200 Free Relay, and the U.S team advanced to the finals, where they missed gold by one-one hundreth of a second. Hungary’s team placed a time of 7:10.95 to the U.S team’s 7:10.96. “It was heartbreaking for them to be so close, but it’s still an amazing accomplishment,” Michelle says. Indeed, both teams shattered the former Junior World Record, as did the bronze-winning Russian team. Now, headed to his dream school, Jack has a full swimming career ahead of him. In the words of Coach Murphy: “If he keeps it up, he’s only going to get better.”

BUILDING A CULTURE OF SUCCESS

HEAD COACH ERIC MCDADE ELEVATES

SOUTHLAKE BASKETBALL SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

By Justin Thomas

S

outhlake Carroll’s Eric McDade has been a high school basketball head coach since he was 26 years old. But he’s always looking for ways to improve his craft. For the past two years, that search has included furthering his education by working toward a masters’ degree from Concordia-Irvine. Not surprisingly, the impact of his recent studies is evident on the basketball court during a very successful 2017-18 season. “I had a mentor tell me if you want more, you have to be more,” McDade says. “So it’s been a constant journey and search to figure out what I need to do here that hasn’t been done before.”

DATA-DRIVEN RESULTS Last year, McDade worked on a graduate study titled, “Building a high school basketball program based on leadership and character development.” The study, he says, challenges him to look at the team’s values as well as the Dragons’ style of play. “It forced me to look at running and gunning, make it data-driven and really analyze the effects of a fast-paced tempo and increased possessions in basketball,” McDade says. “Everything is about getting possessions and creating opportunities and that’s what we’re getting back to.” The results have been staggering, with Carroll tied for second in 5-6A behind reigning champ Hebron and sitting with a 21-4 record overall. Even more impressive, this success is coming from a relatively young team, as the Dragons entered the season withonly two returning varsity seniors, Stephen Blomstrom and Jack McBride. Early season success, coupled with Carroll’s frenetic style of play, brought about an increased level of enthusiasm to Southlake Carroll fans and the program as a whole. By late January, the team had already hit 20 wins – a goal they had laid out for the entire season. Top that off with breaking the school’s record for 3-pointers in a season, and you can see why fans and players alike are amped up. SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

“It’s up-and-down and it’s exciting to watch,” McDade says. “We’ve had great crowds so far and we’re doing well. We’ve reaped the benefits of our style and it has rejuvenated the program in a lot of ways. The kids and community are excited about it.” Included in Carroll’s start — in which Blomstrom, McBride and junior Brandon Haddock were each averaging better than 13 points per game — was a 12-game win streak, a first-place performance at the Keller ISD Tournament and a strong showing at the Magnolia Tournament to open the season. “We go down to Magnolia every year and it’s a great time,” McDade says. “We get to see a bunch of top-notch teams and this year it was really big for us. It really jumpstarted our season and gave us some confidence.” McDade was hopeful Carroll’s non-district slate would prepare them for district play, and that was the case with the Dragons getting out to a 5-1 start. “Those tournaments showed us we could play with anyone and you need that because this district is a grind,” McDade says. McDade also credits the willingness of Carroll’s versatile and selfless roster, including seniors Hudson Taylor, Cam Cozzens and Gabe Dato and junior Jonathan Zapinski, to accept their roles as a reason for the strong results. WINTER ’18 • 31

“This group came in with two guys with varsity experience and we were really unsure about what the other guys would bring,” he says. “But what we have is great senior leadership and a bunch of guys that all pull for each other. It’s a true team and they get the big picture. That solves a lot of problems you have as a coach.” While work ethic can hide many potential deficiencies, talent and smarts on the court are still required to contend for district titles and playoff berths in the Metroplex — areas the Dragons aren’t lacking in, either. At the midpoint, Blomstrom was Carroll’s top assassin from the outside, knocking down 66 3-pointers (on 42 percent shooting), while Haddock knocked down 62 from deep. Overall, eight players on the Carroll roster have converted at least seven 3-pointers. McDade also doesn’t shy from letting his players bask in their success and enjoy the process. “Nothing can be accomplished without enthusiasm,” he says. “At the end of day, play hard and fast and get after it, but have fun at the same time. I’m here to guide the players … you have your culture in mind, but sometimes they create a different one and you want to empower them to do that.” That’s something McDade has always encouraged since he began his coaching career some 22 years ago. 32 • WINTER ’18

CALLED TO COACH After growing up in the Denison area competing in football and basketball at the high school level, McDade played hoops at Grayson College. He then transfered and graduated from Concordia — where he already had an inkling to become a basketball coach. After one year as an assistant at Concordia, McDade was an assistant for one-year stops at Round Rock McNeil High School, A&M Consolidated and Cleburne. “I always knew I wanted to be a coach because I just enjoy the game and enjoy people,” McDade says. After continued success in the coaching ranks, McDade took a head coaching position to start a new program at Mansfield Timberview, where he led the Timberwolves to the state semifinals. From there, McDade spent three seasons as the head coach of powerhouse Duncanville before arriving at Southlake — where he is coaching in his sixth season for the Dragons. “Duncanville was a great job, but there was just something about [Southlake],” McDade says. “I was really intrigued by the building of the program aspect, and I knew this would be a great place to live and for [my wife Janet and I] to raise our kids.” DRAGONPRIDE

McDade’s oldest son, Bryson, is now a sophomore at Carroll, with Braylon now in the seventh grade. “Southlake goes well beyond basketball and sports,” McDade said. “It’s a great place to raise a family and is a great community. I’ve been blessed to be in my sixth year here. We’ve had good groups lay down the foundation and it’s culminating this year with the team doing really well. It just takes some time.” McDade is not only pleased with Carroll’s success at the varsity level, but with an increased level of participation and enthusiasm for kids of younger ages. “It’s been a great opportunity to grow as a coach and get linked in, especially with my boys getting older and liking basketball,” he says. “A few us of recently established Southlake Basketball, which is kind of like the Dragon youth football program. It’s an avenue for kids to play and an opportunity to coach them when they’re younger. Some of these kids that are sophomores now, we’ve coached since fifth or sixth grade. It’s been neat to see.” And for McDade, seeing the growth of players he has coached is one of the greatest rewards He recalls a recent teacher appreciation night where a former player of his who is now a coach was acknowledged. “It was neat to listen to what the students said about him and [to realize] it’s all about the relationships,” he says. “It’s a word we toss around a lot and it may sound cliché, but having the chance to be a part of these young men's lives is important. Even if you don’t talk, once they’re grown, you know you had an impact on their development.” And at Carroll, those players return to show their gratitude more often than not. “That’s the really cool thing about Southlake,” McDade says. “The guys here really do come back. During the holidays, they text and are on Twitter supporting us. They all try to come back for the alumni game to be a part of this and keep up with what’s going on. It’s incredible.” DRAGONPRIDE

hen the Friday night lights above Dragon Stadium fade to black and the final bus pushes away, Southlake Carroll alumnus Jay Armstrong remains hard at work late into the night, reliving every moment of every play, ready to relay the game to all of Southlake. As the Dragon’s Athletic Assistant for Sports Information and Social Media Relations, Jay covers each sport within the athletic department. His enthusiasm for today’s Dragon athletics and impressive ability to recall Southlake sports history are invaluable assets to the Carroll Athletic Department and the community as a whole. “There are very few people who deeply love the Carroll Dragons like Jay Armstrong,” says Carroll Athletic Director Darren Allman. “This is not only evident through his informative and entertaining coverage of Carroll Athletics, but in the genuine care he shows for student-athletes and coaches as well. He truly considers all past and current Carroll Dragons as family.” SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

No truer words could be spoken. Jay’s heart, his determination, and his pride for Dragon Nation far exceed that of any other alumni and any other Dragon fan. A DEDICATED DRAGON Armstrong’s passion for Carroll’s athletic program began well before his family even entered Southlake’s city limits. At just seven years old, living in McKinney, Texas, the avid sports fan began following Southlake sports legend, Dane Johnson under the leadership of Coach Bob Ledbetter, as they carried the Dragons to three championships across two different sports. “Every morning, we would wake up to read The Dallas Morning News to hear Dane’s record, his stats, just to see what he would do,” recounts Belinda Armstrong, Jay’s mother. Dragon Pride was already building in their hearts, even though they were miles apart and six years away from calling Southlake home. Shortly after Dane’s reign, the Armstrong family moved to San Angelo. Despite their time in San Angelo, they never forgot the Carroll dynasty, which was evident when a relocation back to DFW was presented to the Armstrong family. Jay, a high school freshman at the time, had strong opinions about where his new home should be. Why? Football. Despite being wheel-chair bound due to Cerebral Palsy, Jay was choosing his home based on activities in which he would never directly participate. Jay never let his diagnosis keep him from becoming one of the most involved sports alumni Southlake has ever seen. “THE GREATEST HAPPY COINCIDENCES OF ALL TIME” In November of 1998, Jay attended his first day at Carroll High School, kicking off what he calls “the greatest happy coincidences of all time,” clearing the path to make way for where he is today. Within his first few hours on campus, happy coincidence No. 1 was already well underway. His charisma, contagious joy and instant recollection of Friday night’s game stats quickly earned the admiration of players and coaches, landing him a seat at the lunch table with the star varsity football players and cheerleaders. He never left that table. “The rest is history,” says Jay. The following year another happy coincidence, as Jay says, occurred that led him to becoming the official good luck charm for the Lady Dragons. After driving out to Dallas to cheer on the volleyball team, Jay discovered the gymnasium of the home team did not have a wheelchair access ramp to the stands, thus denying Armstrong the ability to watch the match-up. Coach Wyvonne Walling wouldn’t have any of that. She invited Jay to the sidelines where he watched as the Dragons pulled a major upset against Highland Park, leading Walling to request Jay on the sidelines for every game. During Jay’s sophomore year, Coach Todd Dodge and his wife, Elizabeth, moved to Southlake. Instantly, the connection was there as Elizabeth was Jay’s first grade teacher’s aide in McKinney. Each of these coincidences kept linking Jay to the athletic program, years after he was gone.

CONTINUING TO PROTECT THE TRADITION Jay’s days at Carroll High School came to a close in May of 2002, but his love for sports only grew stronger. The Armstrong family moved to Austin where Jay, despite a series of surgeries, earned a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management from University of Texas. Upon returning home to Southlake degree in hand, Jay devoted time to writing a book geared toward young children with the goal of helping them adapt to classmates with special challenges. Upon completion he set to sharing the book with children, speaking at elementary schools within Carroll ISD and around the state of Texas. Now back on the scene in Southlake, Jay was hired by Coach Dodge to be the director for his summer football camp, setting in motion yet another of his greatest coincidences. While working the camp, Jay met Coach Kirk Rogers who immediately saw Jay’s talent, strong work ethic and passion for Carroll sports. Determined to bring Jay’s skills on staff, Rogers found the perfect position that utilized Jay’s expertise to benefit the entire Carroll program. In no time, Jay slid right into this role as the Athletic Assistant for Sports Information and Social Media Relations for the Carroll Athletic Department. 44 • WINTER ’18

“If there is a hard drive that contains all the historical information about CISD athletics, it’s in Jay’s head,” says Bill Webb, Carroll Athletic Booster Club President. “Jay will talk about a play that happened ten years ago as if he is still in the press box, seeing it happen real-time. His ability to recall even the most minute of details about Dragon athletics is a combination of his passion and talent for journalism.” Jay’s role expands across the department from reporting recaps of every athletic event, to covering all of the press credentials, running the athletic program’s website and Twitter page and coordinating the live streaming of games. “The growing popularity and use of social media has made Jay’s role more important than ever,” says Allman. A typical day for Jay doesn’t look like most. His job starts as most are winding down for the night. Attending as many games as he can, phone in hand and ready to keep an eye on the highlights of each game being played elsewhere, Jay’s “day” is in full swing. As the clock moves closer to midnight, his work is just beginning to hit the web, ready to be read in the morning by Southlake’s sports fans. In addition, Jay is busy coordinating press credentials between the public and the athletic department as well as coordinating live streaming DRAGONPRIDE

and getting game footage to parents. It is clear that Jay is integral in sharing the excellence of Carroll’s athletic program with the community. HONORED FOR 20 YEARS OF DEDICATION AS AN OUTSTANDING ALUMNUS Coming up on his 20th year in Southlake, Jay, an honorary member of the Dragon Council, has attended over a thousand Carroll athletic events and continues to use his journalistic credentials to deliver the greatest moments, whether wins or losses, to Dragon fans. Most recently, Jay was named Outstanding Alumni by The Dragon Alumni Network, an award that demonstrates to the highest level of what it means to be a Dragon. “In Jay’s case, his love and dedication to Carroll and its traditions made Jay an obvious choice,” says Brian Hodges, president of the Dragon Alumni Network. “His dedication, courage and feelings related to the district and its students, former and current, show he truly bleeds green.” Going forward, the award will be given Jay’s namesake, forever representing the commitment, pride and tradition that Jay has always strived to protect.
