The Most Wonderful Time As we prepare to send this issue to press, I’m reminded of how I feel on Christmas Eve. After weeks of decorating, list-making, shopping, wrapping, baking—it’s all over. To put together each issue of Flower Mound Style, we discuss story ideas, make assignments to talented writers, interview experts, schedule photography, proof pages. Then when our Creative Director, Bruce, hits that magic button on his computer to send it to the printer—it’s all over. And just like waiting to see the expression on my kids’ faces Christmas morning when they come downstairs, I get excited to think about how you, our reader, will react to each issue as it arrives in your mailbox or you pick up a copy at the library, the CAC or Chick-fil-A. My hope is you find something to love in every issue. Each month we sit down with a local mover-and-shaker in our Next Door Q&A, and in this issue we caught up with Santa just before he got too busy to chat. Perhaps you can share his interview with your child on page 42. And we also talked to the hardworking folks in our town who endeavor all year long to ensure our community thrives. In “FloMo Grows” on page 44, you can read about what projects are underway and what to expect in the coming months. You also won’t want to miss our feature on page 28, as we get to know Flower Mound residents who came to the United States from India. Learn how they celebrate Christmas and gather ideas on how you can incorporate your family’s unique heritage into the holiday. For the first time, I plan to leave my grandmother’s wooden shoes by the fireplace in hopes that Sinterklaas will leave a gift, and I’ll even whip up a batch of pepernoot cookies—a traditional Dutch treat. However you celebrate the holiday season, we hope peace and goodwill will follow you into the New Year. Merry Christmas, friends!

BLUE & LONESOME THE ROLLING STONES DECEMBER 2

Back to the Blues The Rolling Stones’ first studio album in more than a decade, “Blue & Lonesome”, was recorded in just three days in West London. A passion for blues music has always been at the heart and soul of The Rolling Stones, and the sound of the new album reflects this passion. Produced by Don Was and The Glimmer Twins, the album was recorded at British Grove Studios, close to Richmond and Eel Pie Island, where the band started out as a young blues band playing pubs and clubs. The album’s 12 tracks pay homage to the sounds of their early days and feature the songs of Jimmy Reed, Willie Dixon, Eddie Taylor, Little Walter and Howlin’ Wolf.

TOM CLANCY, TRUE FAITH AND ALLEGIANCE MARK GREANY DECEMBER 6

America Under Attack President Jack Ryan is back in the latest installment of the No. 1 New York Times bestselling series from author Tom Clancy. Espionage, assassins and rogue attacks lead into a novel about a massive information breach within America’s military. And it goes downhill from there. The country’s most dangerous enemies have jumped at the chance to use the data breach to uncover American intelligence agents—both on and off the grid. This is no doubt a job for President Ryan, the country’s only hope. Mark Greany is the author and co-author of more than seven Tom Clancy novels.

HAIRSPRAY LIVE! PASSENGERS IN THEATERS DECEMBER 21

Mayday! Mayday! What has become commonplace in their time may seem unfathomable to us. But screenwriter Jon Spaihts (“Prometheus”) has once again taken us to space, which is not so much the final frontier anymore. On board a spaceship and headed to their new home, along with 5,000 other travelers in suspended animation, passengers Jim (Chris Pratt, “Jurassic World”) and Aurora (Jennifer Lawrence, “Xmen: The Apocalypse”) wake up 90 years too early after the ship malfunctions. Jim and Aurora’s reality is they will probably spend the rest of their lives on this ship, and so they fall in love. But just when you think they will drift off happily into the Milky Way, they face another ship dilemma.

TOWN TAKES HONORS AT TFEA CONFERENCE For the first time, the Town of Flower Mound was recognized with several awards at the Texas Festivals and Events Association’s (TFEA) annual conference. Flower Mound Parks and Recreation took home three first-place Kaliff Marketing Awards of Excellence for Best TV Promotion (Christmas Parade & Tree Lighting Ceremony), Best Miscellaneous Clothing (Dorothy’s Dash participation shirt), and Best Event/ Organization Newsletter (Adventures Guide). The Town was also awarded second place for Best TV Promotion (Independence Fest), in addition to two third-place awards for Best TV Promotion (July Parks and Recreation Month, and Concerts in the Park).

DOG PARK ON ITS WAY TO LAKESIDE DFW Work on a one-acre dog park at Lakeside has begun, according to officials at Realty Capital, master developer of Lakeside DFW. The site, located just east of the central roundabout at the intersection of Edgemere and Lakeside Parkway, is adjacent to the wooded area fed by a creek. Enclosed by iron fencing and surrounded by the Lakeside Trail, the park will include several entrances and offer picnic tables and benches for pet owners. Use of the dog park will be for Lakeside residents only. A set of rules and regulations for dog owners is currently being drafted. Many trees in the area, including some adjacent to the creek and along the trail, have been lighted to provide security and add to the area’s beauty after sunset. The area was initially dedicated solely as a detention basin, a requirement of the town when a new property is developed. “Members of the community hoped this space could be used for another purpose,” says Jimmy Archie, managing partner of Realty Capital. “We explored a number of options and concluded that a dog park would be popular and provided an amenity that could survive flooding without suffering any real damage.” THE SHOPS AT HIGHLAND VILLAGE CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS Santa Claus has come to town and will visit with children young and old in his new home away from home within the amazing 60-foot Christmas tree located in Central Park at The Shops at Highland Village. Make plans to visit with Santa and share holiday wishes every evening through December 24th. Or plan to sit back and enjoy a free horse-drawn carriage ride through the festive streets of the shopping center. Carriages will run Fridays through Sundays until December 18 as well as Monday, December 19, through Friday, December 23. Carriage rides are complementary and available first come, first served; the carriage will not run during inclement weather.

FMFD CHIEF HONORED FOR LEADERSHIP Congratulations to Flower Mound Fire Chief Eric Greaser, recently recognized as a recipient of the 2016 Fire News Outstanding Leadership Award. Chief Greaser was nominated by his colleagues, who highlighted ways this fire veteran has gone the extra mile to make a difference in the lives of others. Chief Greaser joined FMFD in 2014 and has played a pivotal role in transforming the department both organizationally and operationally, by forging relationships within the Town and public safety teams across the region. Chief Greaser traveled to Nashville, Tennessee, to accept this honor at the Firehouse Expo annual conference. WALLETHUB DETERMINES FLOWER MOUND AS ONE OF BEST SMALL TOWNS IN AMERICA In its most recent research detailing the best small towns in America, giving each a score of 1-99 to determine the best small cities in America, WalletHub’s analysts compared 1,268 cities across five key dimensions: 1) Affordability, 2) Economic Health, 3) Education & Health, 4) Quality of Life and 5) Safety. "For our sample, we selected cities with population sizes between 25,000 and 100,000 and considered only the 'city proper' in each case, excluding cities in the surrounding metro area," writes their panel of experts. Flower Mound received an impressive score of 97 with nearby Southlake (99), Allen (98), Coppell (97) and Keller (95) also garnering high scores. Small-town dwellers enjoy tighter networks, shorter commutes and an abundance of land, just to name a few advantages. Granted, there are tradeoffs such as perhaps fewer restaurant options or shorter business hours. But one of the best perks of living in a town with a relatively smaller population is cheaper cost of living — generally speaking, that is. WalletHub’s analysts compared 1,268 cities with populations between 25,000 and 100,000 based on 30 key indicators of livability. They factored in housing costs, school-system quality, safety and number of restaurants per capita, to name a few. To review the entire findings, go to WalletHub.com and read more. WalletHub is owned by Evolution Finance, Inc. and is based in Washington, DC.

The seedlings were distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis at Post Oak Park (4751 Flower Mound Road). The Town also planted an eastern redbud tree at Post Oak Park to commemorate Arbor Day. Looking forward, the Town of Flower Mound announced exciting plans to develop a two-acre tree farm at Green Acres Farm Memorial Park, located at 4400 Hide-A-Way Lane. The farm is scheduled be developed in two phases. Phase one will have approximately 1,000 seedlings planted on an acre of land. Phase two will be added in year three and will have additional seedlings planted on the remaining acre. The tree farm's seedlings will be raised and repotted to larger pots as the trees grow. In year four, the first trees should be large enough for transplant and distribution from the tree farm. The specific use of the trees is yet to be determined, but will be mostly used on town properties such as parks, street medians and open spaces.

From Grain to Glass

LEWISVILLE'S WITHERSPOON DISTILLERY DELIVERS A LOCAL DISTILLING EXPERIENCE ONE HANDCRAFTED BATCH AT A TIME

W

hen we talk about distilling, most of us connect the spirit with geography: Scotch comes from Scotland, tequila from Mexico, vodka from Russia, rum from the Caribbean, and everyone knows bourbon comes from Kentucky. Just don’t tell that to the founders of Witherspoon Distilleries. Quentin Witherspoon, Ryan DeHart and Natasha DeHart (pictured on page 20) blurred their passions with their business expertise and together founded North Texas’ Witherspoon Distillery—the home to Bonfire, River Rum, Witherspoon’s Texas Straight Bourbon Whiskey and Witherspoon’s Single Malt Scotch. “North Texas is where we all call home—a place that has welcomed us with open arms,” says Natasha DeHart, chief revenue officer. “The Lone Star State has such a rich history of independence, pride and strength, we wanted to make bold, flavorful spirits worthy of their origin. We couldn’t ask for a better place for our business to lay down roots.”

THE FOUNDING FAMILIES Although Quentin Witherspoon is a fifth-generation Texan, he learned his craft straight from the source. He began tinkering with distillation while in the Central African Republic as a U.S. Marine and then learned the art of moonshining in South Carolina. He even spent time in Puerto Rico learning to make rum. Following his military career with the Marines and Homeland Security, Witherspoon eventually returned to North Texas ready to start the next phase of his life; he currently lives in Flower Mound with his wife, Michelle, and their two children and is a master distiller. “By chance, we all moved to the DFW area around the same time, ran into each other and started discussions about opening a distillery together,” says Natasha. “In 2011, that became a reality.” In October, Witherspoon Distillery celebrated one year at its Charles Street location in Lewisville. Natasha’s husband, Ryan, chief financial officer, served in the Marines with Witherspoon. He worked for Siemens Enterprise Communications in Munich, Germany, followed by a stint with Hewlett Packard Enterprise in Plano. An avid home-brewer, Ryan employs the right mix of discipline, business acumen and passion for spirits to build Witherspoon Distillery fm STYLE Magazine

“ Above all else, quality, consistency and our customers will always remain our highest priority.” Natasha DeHart, co-founder, Witherspoon Distillery into a breakout success. Natasha wears several hats at Witherspoon; she handles business development and customer relations and brings 15 years of sales and leadership experience—both domestic and international—to the company. She’s passionate about home-brewing and about Witherspoon Distillery’s mission of producing small-batch, quality spirits in a welcoming, family-friendly environment. “There are some great distilleries out there, but rather than compare ourselves with them, we are focused on forging our own path,” she says.

AN ENTERTAINING EXPERIENCE Witherspoon Distillery is open to the public, with live music and a visiting food truck every Friday and Saturday. The venue remains family-friendly and, outside of special events, no tickets or reservations are required. Customers have come to love shimmying up to the full craft cocktail bar, which is complete with house-made liqueurs, bitters DEC 16 • 19

and creative spirit infusions. Witherspoon also offers plenty of nonalcoholic options, including a number of house-made sodas and fresh-squeezed juices. For the cocktail menu, expect a full range of spirits, including brandy, gin, agave spirit, vodka and more. For both the bar and for the retail market, Witherspoon makes several varieties of rum and whiskey. Part of the Witherspoon experience is enjoying live music on their expansive patio, food trucks on the weekends and evening distillery tours, where you can learn about everything involved in distillation, from fermentation to bottling. The team shows no signs of slowing down, either, even while staying true to their roots. “We’ve kept our goals modest to ensure consistency and quality, which could be put at risk by explosive growth,” says Natasha. “We are growing consistently and will likely need to expand operations in the next few years, but keeping our Texas customers happy comes first.” Witherspoon Distillery is not alone in its pursuit of small batch production. Across Texas, small distilleries appeal to those captivated by the farmto-table trend. Now it’s not only cool to eat what local famers produce but also hip to sip what local distillers bottle. A huge boost to the boon came late in 2013 when Senate Bill 905 allowed Texas distilleries to sell directly to consumers—in bottles Natasha DeHart, co-founder, Witherspoon Distillery and by the glass. The bill opened up opportunities for places like Witherspoon Distillery to interact more directly with consumers and create entertainment venues out of production facilities. “Because we handcraft all our spirits, each one is unique. Everything we make is small batch,” Natasha says. “Every bottle that goes out the door has been hand-bottled by one of us, or by one of our wonderful bottling party volunteers. We have our hands in every step of the process, from grain to glass.”

“The Lone Star State has such a rich history of independence, pride and strength, we wanted to make bold, flavorful spirits worthy of their origin.”

LIVE LOCAL OBSERVE GLOBAL FAMILIES WEAVE INTERNATIONAL TRADITIONS INTO CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS

orn and raised in India, Bhavna Vashisht moved to the United States when she was 25. When you drive past her Flower Mound home around Christmastime, you might

not guess that she and her family are Hindu. They participate in the parade of Christmas homes and decorate with Christmas trees and holiday décor. Vashisht’s daughter plays carols on the piano, and the family loves to bake cookies and exchange Christmas gifts with friends. “Everyone celebrated everything where I grew up in India—there was no demarcation or separation in terms of holidays,” says Vashisht, whose family is the only one from India on her cul-de-sac. “When I came to the United States, I simply continued this tradition.” by Annette Brooks

She admits, “After Indian Thanksgiving is over in January, I’m ready for a break from nearly two months of holiday cooking and baking!”

EXTENDING INVITATIONS Vashisht looks for opportunities to include her friends and neighbors during holidays. She often invites them to her Diwali dinner party, honoring the Hindu festival of lights. “We’re as interested in sharing our traditions and celebrations with our friends as we are in incorporating theirs into our lives,” she says. “I was elated when I picked up Diwali Forever Stamps at the post office. It was exciting that the country I call home recognized Diwali in this type of national display.” All around us, people will honor their faiths and traditions in ways that are special to them. Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on December 25, starting with Advent, the fourth Sunday before Christmas. And, this year, Jews celebrate Hanukkah from December 24 through New Year’s Day. If your friends, neighbors or coworkers share a faith different than yours, extend some goodwill by wishing them peace and joy as they celebrate their holidays. And don’t be shy about inviting others to learn about your traditions or accepting invitations to celebrate theirs. Our great country has always championed acceptance and inclusion, while embracing the unique heritage in each person’s DNA, and communities thrive when we get to know each other better. 30 • DEC 16

Join in the fun of celebrating Christmas as you know it, while incorporating a tradition or two from your ancestral heritage. Gift giving occurs on the feast of Epiphany (January 6) in Mexico, not on Christmas, and on Epiphany Eve (January 5) in Russia and the Ukraine. In Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City, people celebrate on Christmas Eve by throwing confetti, taking pictures and enjoying Christmas decorations and lights. Children in Holland receive gifts in wooden shoes or clogs instead of Christmas stockings. It is tradition in Ireland to leave mince pies and a bottle of Guinness for Santa. Portuguese children keep their shoes along windowsills and doorways on Epiphany eve and fill them with carrots and straw to lure the horses of the Three Wise Men to their households. In the morning, they collect gifts and the goodies left in their shoes.

Do One Thing and Do It Best THE MANTRA AT EMPORIUM PIES PROVES TO BE A RECIPE FOR SUCCESS

I EMPORIUM PIES 107 S. Tennessee Street McKinney 214.491.1577 EmporiumPies.com

36 • DEC 16

f there’s a universe without pie, then we don’t want to live in it. But if you’ve ever attempted to bake one from scratch, you know how laborious homemade pie can be. And trying to achieve the perfect crust? Well, that’s an art form all its own. Megan Wilkes and Mary Sparks perfected the artistry of pie crafting and peddled their delicious desserts at farmers markets and restaurants in 2011. Within a year, the duo had amassed enough business to open a brickand-mortar bakery in the tony Bishop Arts District in Oak Cliff. In 2013, Emporium Pies’ second location opened in historic downtown McKinney. This fall, they opened a third shop in Deep Ellum. From the looks of things, Emporium Pies might soon become a revolution.

“We opened a shop because we thought it would be a good venue for our community,” Wilkes says. “Where else can you meet a friend or go on a date and eat something delicious for less than $10?” Wilkes says the first location soon became overrun with pie-seeking patrons, so the second shop in McKinney helped spread the business a bit. “We sold out of pies all the time,” she recalls. The response to Emporium Pies has definitely exceeded the business partners’ expectations, but neither one plans to grow too fast, too soon. “We are an owner-operated company and we do it all, so we are committed to ensuring we produce a quality product,” Wilkes says. Sparks develops the recipes while Wilkes focuses on the business side of the counter.

LOCALFLAVOR review

While Emporium Pies stocks whole pies for folks to enjoy at home (or in the parking lot—we won’t judge), many customers appreciate the nostalgic experience of sharing a slice of pie over coffee with a friend. “Even if you can find a restaurant that serves good pie, you feel obligated to order a meal, too,” Wilkes says. “Here you can just order pie.” With sweet shops specializing in treats such as cakes, cupcakes, ice cream and gelato, why pie? “Pies are a little challenging to make at home,” says Wilkes. “Pie crust is fickle, so people end up buying it from the grocery store and it’s just not as delicious. We knew we could make delicious pies and revive a lost art.” Plus, who has time to make pies from scratch— especially during the busy holiday season? “Our apple pie takes 12 hours to make from crust to completion,” Wilkes adds, saying she remembers making pies with her grandmother, but her mother didn’t invest the time. Besides the American classic apple pie (aka Lord of the Pies), Emporium Pies has rolled out so many delicious options, we can’t decide which to try first. Emporium’s take on pumpkin pie, Drop Dead Gourdgeous, features a gingerbread crust and a spicier custard filling than conventional recipes. Expect the pecan pies here (The Drunken Nut) to have a richer, deeper flavor due to caramelized brown sugar, bourbon and butter instead of corn syrup. Merry Berry features a tartly delicious blend of cranberry and pecan filling over a signature salty crust and topped with a sugar cookie. “We like to say that if a cranberry muffin and a sugar cookie had a baby, it would be this,” Wilkes says. Buttermilk pies are a Texas tradition, so Emporium Pies adds a hint of chai spice and calls its version a Buttermilk Blitzen. And if dessert isn’t dessert unless it’s chocolate, Emporium Pies understands. Try Father Christmas— an icebox pie featuring a chocolate cookie crust topped with peppermint filling and finished with whipped cream with peppermint on top. Because the winter pie menu is the most popular—yet runs the shortest span of time—we suggest getting your orders in early. You can call the shop or order online. If you want to try before buying a whole pie (or a dozen or 100), each location serves pie by the slice and has seating for dining in. “After we open for the day, it’s first-come, first-served,” Wilkes says, “and you might have to wait in line.” Loyal Emporium Pies customers know firsthand that pies sell out, but the experience is worth the wait in line. Emporium Pies has been a part of many special occasions—from holiday meals and weddings to first dates and even engagements right in the shop. “We’ve had couples who had their first dates here, so they came back to get engaged,” Wilkes says. “It’s great to be a part of people’s special times.” Let’s raise a fork to sweet celebrations all year long!

Family Fare Dido’s Urban Grill takes off with unique concept

DIDO’S URBAN GRILL 1900 Long Prairie Road Flower Mound 972.539.2951 DidosUrbanGrill.com

38 • DEC 16

When a television producer looked for a local restaurant to use as the set of a pilot he was shooting, Dido’s Urban Grill fit the bill. When area schools need a place to hold a fundraising event, Dido’s Urban Grill steps up. And when a talented young man wanted to showcase his guitar skills—and earn a little money for college—Dido’s provided the venue. For a fairly new local restaurant, Dido’s Urban Grill has eagerly embraced its neighbors and established itself as a cool venue with an equally notable menu. The DiDominick family opened the restaurant in July 2015, putting son Gary in the kitchen to run the grill and create recipes. “Gary attended the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco (an affiliate of Le Cordon Bleu) and always wanted to open his own restaurant,” his dad, Ernie, says. But opening a venue in California requires a significant investment, so Gary’s parents, Pam and Ernie, convinced him to move back to North Texas. Together, the family found the perfect location for a California-type gastro pub in Flower Mound—a space near the busy FM 2499 and 3040 intersection that provides easy access for people coming into town. Creating a concept was easy; finding a fitting name was a little harder. Dido’s (pronounced dee-doughs) is derived from the family’s last name; ‘urban grill’ reflects Gary’s move from the big city back home. Patrons have embraced both the concept and the family’s scratch-made menu fare, which changes to reflect seasonal offerings. Daily specials are featured on the chalkboard with happy hour specials from the bar every day of the week.

A favorite after-church spot for brunch or for a late breakfast or early lunch during the week, Starwood Café features palate-pleasing plates of downhome cooking and has earned a loyal following. “We have really great food and such personable service, that people keep coming back,” says Kimberly Almeida, general manager. “In fact, a gentleman told me recently that he orders the same thing every time he comes in and said we serve the best breakfast in the state.” Imagine what he’d say if he got a little more adventurous with the menu! Open every day from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Starwood Café has perfected recipes designed to start your day off right. If coffee is your beverage of choice, the no-frills but unusually good Columbian coffee by Farmer Brothers is reason enough to stop by the café. Almeida admits to being a coffee connoisseur and says people come to Starwood Café for the coffee alone. “We don’t serve espressos or cappuccinos, but we do have flavored creamers,” she says, if you like your cup of joe fancy like that. Beyond the breakfast and brunch menu, explore sandwiches, salads, wraps, paninis, burgers and all the sides, plus favorites including chicken fried steak and chicken fried chicken. For those who crave something sweet after their meal, look for a few select desserts on the menu during the holiday season. Italian cream cake, pumpkin pie and bread pudding with lemon sauce and toasted walnuts will appear in rotation for a limited time. When the weather permits, Starwood Café diners flock to the outdoor patio for a bit of fresh air and a view of the garden. Or you can always get your meal to-go, including fried chicken for a few or a crowd. SANTA SPEAKS THE JOLLY OLD ELF TELLS US WHAT IT’S LIKE BEING THE MOST POPULAR GUY IN DECEMBER

Christmas comes just once each year, but the guy in the red suit spends months getting ready for one big night— kinda like the Dallas Cowboys preparing for the Super Bowl, except, well, Santa delivers every year. We caught up with the busiest dude in town to talk about what December means to him before he got too busy packing his sleigh and granting special wishes of Flower Mound girls and boys.

Wow, Santa. After all these years, we meet again. I’ve always wanted to know—did you ever consider another line of work? Oh, no! Never! The other day, I came across a letter from my friend John. He asked for some gifts, but he also wanted me to bring some presents for his sister. I could never consider another job. There are so many children who are so selfless and kind, it’s really a privilege to be Santa. What’s it really like working with all those elves? Well, it can be quite tedious at times. Thank goodness for Mrs. Claus. They respond so much better to her than I. They enjoy their breaks and playing outside with the reindeer. But in general, they can be such a joy to have on my team. You still find time to visit children to hear their wishes in person. Is there a request you can’t grant? One I get quite often—usually from an only child— is the wish for a brother or sister. I tell them that’s not in my hands. I can grant puppy wishes and kitty wishes, but to answer the request for a baby, that has to come from grace. When you’re in our neck of the woods, what are some of your favorite places to hang out? One would be Barnes and Noble in the Shops at Highland Village. Reading is one of those activities that never grows old. I also enjoy strolling through Main Street in Grapevine—during the holidays of course because of all the lights. But my favorite would be the Gaylord Texan at Christmas. There I can have a cup of coffee, sit back, take in all of the sights and sounds and relax watching all the families soak in the magic of Christmas! You seem well-suited for cold weather. Can we guess what your favorite sport is? I love baseball and got to see the Rangers play when I was in Texas this summer. I met some new friends at the stadium who weren’t sure if it was really me, since I was wearing a Rangers’ red shirt and not one with fur trim. I told the kids I was in disguise so I could check up on their brother. But my favorite

fm STYLE Magazine

sport is definitely ice hockey—if that was your guess. I’m a huge fan of the Montreal Canadiens and the Detroit Red Wings. We always leave a plate of cookies by the fireplace. Do you have a favorite cookie you’d like to request? They’re all wonderful, but chocolate chip and sugar cookies are my favorite. Or peanut butter. Or even Oreos. And a glass of milk is always nice. After Christmas, Mrs. Claus puts me on a very strict diet and makes me clean out the reindeer barn every day for exercise. I take it you’ve never met a cookie you didn’t like. Is that the best part about being Santa? Ho, ho, no! Getting to see smiles and the brightness in the children’s eyes is the best part. Being on the receiving end of all that joy makes me so glad that I chose to do what I do. We only see you in your fabulous red suit. Do you have a favorite ensemble you wear off-season? Mrs. Claus and I go south during the summer to soak in all the warmth we don’t get at the North Pole, so while there I wear shorts, Hawaiian shirts and sandals. Our favorite places are Belize, Key West [Florida] and Vera Cruz [Mexico]. Those places provide a nice break from minus 47 degrees. Those sound like awesome places to retire to. Is retirement anywhere in your near future? No, no, no! If at all possible, I’ll never pass the torch. The joy and happiness I receive keeps me young. Any advice for parents on how to get kids to stay off the naughty list this time of year? They shouldn’t tell their children that Santa won’t come to visit them if they don’t behave. I visit every house on Christmas Eve. But if they stay on the naughty list, a lump of coal could be coming their way instead of what they wished for. What gift would you want every child to have? Joy and happiness. There is just too much ugliness in the world right now. I would want for every child to have enough joy and happiness to last all year long.

FLOMO GROWS FROM DIRT ROADS TO MULTIMILL ION-DOLLA R DEVELOPM ENTS, OUR COMMUNITY HAS EVOLVED INTO A THRIVING, FLOURISH ING TOWN

Talk to anyone who has lived in Flower Mound for a decade or longer, and you’ll hear tales of four-way stops that are now bustling, busy intersections complete with stoplights and additional turn lanes. Some reminisce about former pastures transformed seemingly overnight into housing developments. Speak with our senior citizens, and they’ll recall when Morriss Road

was a two-lane street “paved with dirt.” Today’s landscape reveals few similarities of the town of 50—or even five—years ago. Along with any town’s growth comes rises in property values and an enhanced quality of life for its citizens. Thriving communities attract new families who require new homes. Retail follows along with medical facilities, restaurants, parks and recreation, schools and services. As new developments sprout from our soil, behind the scenes our town’s employees and elected officials encourage growth while controlling rapid and intense urbanization. Although Flower Mound is a town by name, at 43 square miles, geographically it is the second largest municipality in Denton County behind Denton itself. Lewisville comes in a close third at 42 square miles; neighboring Highland Village is a scant 6.4 square miles and Coppell

In 2010, there were 22,940 households in Flower Mound; today 23,308 homes are standing. “The town issued just over 7,000 permits this year,” Dalton says, “but that includes new fences and water heaters, not just home construction. A little over 400 single family homes were issued permits.” Flower Mound’s average annual growth rate has remained steady at about one percent over the past 10 years. Flower Mound’s Economic Development office does its best to attract quality commercial developers and is currently experiencing a downtrend after a robust surge of permits between 2010 and 2012. The office utilizes the North Central Texas Council of Governments for assistance in planning for common needs and coordinating for sound regional development. Today, Flower Mound is home to between 1,200 and 1,500 open commercial businesses. From May 2012 to June 2016, 501 new businesses opened in the town; between 38 and 40 percent of the total number of businesses were added in that period of time. Most of this growth has been seen in key areas along FM 2499, within Lakeside Business District and along Cross Timbers and Flower Mound Roads. From January 2013 to December 2015, 78 new medical offices opened including United Dermatology Associates of Flower Mound, TMJ and Sleep Therapy Centre and Texas Oncology-Flower Mound, allowing residents increased access to local providers for health care. fm STYLE Magazine

Following a 2013 Resident Survey requesting additional dining establishments, a concentrated effort was made to attract more restaurants to the area. Since January 2014, more than 50 new eateries have opened in Flower Mound—Carvao, The Table, Urbano, Verf’s, Dido’s Urban Grill and many more. On the south side of town, Lakeside DFW, a mixed-use project, enjoyed the opening of additional retailers this year as well as the ground-breaking of The Towers a high rise that touts views of Grapevine Lake and access to DFW Airport as major appeal to future residents. Recently announced new amenities include a 6,000-square-foot plaza overlooking Lake Grapevine and a residents-only dog park. “The plaza will extend approximately 80 feet toward the lake from the boardwalk,” explains Rebecca Everitt, a deveopment associate with Realty Capital. “The views of the water are beautiful from this spot.” DEC 16 • 47

Also planned is additional ground-floor retail with space for offices or residences above, restaurants, a 3000-seat amphitheater, famers market and a wedding chapel, plus over 46 acres of parks and open spaces. “Expect a flurry of activity soon,” says Bobby Dollak, civil engineer for Centurion American, the developers of The River Walk. “We have really upped the wow factor by moving some amenities to key locations.”

Hand-in-hand with attracting new businesses is the town’s commitment to their success. While the national average for closure rates for new ventures is 34 percent, Flower Mound boasts an impressive low 6.9 percent average since 2012. Due to the town’s retention programs, Flower Mound is not cannibalizing itself or forcing out older businesses. Those entities that close do so most likely as a result of unique and specific conditions businesses naturally face in any competitive consumer market, reports the town’s Economic Growth Analysis. Overall, Flower Mound is in the midst of a period of planned growth and prosperity. With thoughtful care to the well-being and good health of its citizens and its economic framework, those entrusted with the future of our town deserve our appreciation for their continued efforts toward financial stability and a sound economic development focus. fm

Winter Wanderings THREE UNIQUE ESCAPES TO EXPERIENCE DURING THE FROSTY SEASON

W

hen you make plans to get away during the cold months, don’t just settle for a ski lodge and hot cocoa. Although a weekend winter escape could call for snow, it doesn’t have to. You might find just what you were looking for in a quick three- or four-day jaunt this season whether you strap on your skis or not.

Aspen’s Art Scene TheLittleNell.com Located in a remote area of the Rocky Mountains’ Sawatch Range, Aspen just might be the quintessential winter destination in Colorado. Originally settled as a silver-mining town, Aspen has grown up to be quite classy. A little bit artsy and a little bit homegrown, the city has more to offer than just supreme skiing and people watching. Enjoy galleries that feature works of art from all over the world in every media imaginable. And the city isn’t short on dance, music and

50 • DEC 16

theater arts either. Add to your weekend agenda watching a performance by the contemporary Aspen Santa Fe Ballet Company. The artistic side of Aspen flows into the restaurant and hospitality industry as well. Within the community’s only five-star, five-diamond hotel, The Little Nell, you’ll find original abstract works of art by internationally recognized painters, sculptors and photographers. In fact, the hotel has weaved art into its accommodations and dining experiences. Stay the weekend in one of The Little Nell’s six luxury suites—each named for a notable Aspen figure or location— oozing with contemporary charm and lavish amenities. The Roch Suite, named for Swiss mountaineer and skiing champion André Roch, is a 1,250-square-foot, one-bedroom space that includes two stone-clad gas fireplaces, wool carpeting and a steam shower and soaking tub. If looking for a palate-pleasing dining experience to match the hotel’s tone, a guest must only walk to The Little Nell’s signature restaurant, element 47 (as in the 47th element on the periodic table, silver). With a relaxed “Aspen casual” dress code, as locals call it, and a long wine list, the restaurant’s cuisine and atmosphere won’t disappoint.

A Hideaway in the Pacific Northwest AlderbrookResort.com Nothing says spending the weekend sipping coffee in the rain— well, not actually in the rain—than a weekend getaway to Seattle, Washington. But if rain is not your cup of tea, and you’d rather relax in the mountains, the Alderbrook Resort and Spa is surrounded by the majestic Olympic Mountains and sits at the shores of Hood Canal. However, just because your weekend getaway may seem like a mountain retreat, you definitely won’t be roughing it. Alderbrook offers two types of accommodations: guestrooms and cottages. The two-bedroom cottages range from 600 to 650 square feet and include a fully equipped kitchen, luxury linens and a gas fireplace in the living room. Pets are welcome to join the family for the weekend, also. Fresh, local ingredients and seafood make for a great shore-to-table dining experience. The seafood harvested from the Puget Sound and the Hood Canal includes oysters, crab and the like. A weekend of relaxation doesn’t have to stop at sleeping and eating; there are many activities to choose from during your stay at Alderbrook. Golfing, hiking and boating are just a few pursuits worth trying.

Tennessee’s Hidden Inn BlackberryFarm.com In 1976, a Tennessee couple opened their residence, Blackberry Farm, to the public as a six-room country inn. Located in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains of eastern Tennessee, Blackberry Farm has since grown into a 4,200-acre estate complete with a wellness center, three dining choices, a brewery, a wine cellar, a barn and a variety of

52 • DEC 16

accommodations that far surpass the six rooms offered in ’76. With access to another 5,000 acres of private wilderness, Blackberry Farm is a resort located on a working farm. With the nearest southern city 45 minutes away, a stay at the farm is truly a weekend escape from modern-day life. There doesn’t have to be snow-covered ground for you to enjoy a weekend winter getaway. Trade in your skis for a bow and arrow or a fly-fishing rod. And why warm yourself by a communal fire pit when you can escape to Blackberry Farm’s Deep Healing Woods to experience forest bathing? (Think mental clarity, not soap and water.) There are enough outdoor activities to feed your soul and thirst for relaxation, and there are three restaurants on site to fill your belly. Described as “Foothills Cuisine,” the rugged-meets-gourmet food served at each of the farm’s eateries is the creation of more than just a butcher and baker. A chef, master gardener, cheese maker, forager, jam lady, chocolatier, restaurant manager and sommelier each put their passion behind whatever dish is served. If nostalgia is one of the factors drawing you to Blackberry Farm, the estate rooms are the original inn rooms dating back to the 1970s. Period antiques give each of the rooms a step-back-intime feel. If, however, you are looking for a little more modern luxury, the Hill Cottage accommodations include a screened-in porch complete with rocking chairs, and indoor necessities such as high-speed internet, flat-screen televisions and surround sound for the whole cottage.

A Musical Extravaganza Prepare for a flurry of lasers and magical crescendos from the legendary Trans-Siberian Orchestra

I

f you have never seen Trans-Siberian Orchestra live, you won’t want to miss this year’s production! The Christmas rock sensation is descending on Dallas’ American Airlines Center for two shows on December 22 at 3:30 and 8 p.m. for a Christmas spectacular of symphonic metal with an unforgettable light and laser show. The orchestra, which formed in 1996, has sold more than 10 million albums and has been seen live by over 10 million people over the past 20 years. TransSiberian Orchestra is considered one of the top 10 ticket-selling bands of the new millennium. With a marriage of classical and rock sounds, the orchestra, which originally planned to play rock operas, has become known worldwide for their incredible Christmas albums and live shows. This year’s tour, The Ghosts of Christmas Eve, promises to be phenomenal.

Founder of Trans-Siberian Orchestra Paul O’Neill says, “We have two stages—with pyro, light and lasers—on both sides of the arena, as well as in the crowd and the best sound we can find. There are no second-class seats at a Trans-Siberian Orchestra show. I want people to walk out of our shows speechless and still not believing what they have seen was possible.” At press time, tickets were still available for both shows, ranging in price from $37.50 to $77.50, but who knows how long they will last? Act now to make this Christmas season the most unforgettable one yet.
