Move it, Move it This Christmas I received a fitbit in my stocking. It was not a subtle hint from a loved one to get in shape; I actually requested it because I know I need to move more. For a while now, I have watched others subtly check their trackers midday to monitor their progress and wondered if owning a fitbit would make me more accountable, or if it would cause a certain unease about my lack of activity. But I know that a body in motion stays in motion—or so I heard on a TV commercial—and I figure at least I lower my chances of contracting deep vein thrombosis if I get up and move throughout the day. In this issue we explore the myriad venues in our area dedicated to getting folks moving—particularly those for whom workouts are anything but part of their routine— in “Fitness in the ’Burbs” on page 54. If working out ranks low on your to-do list, consider joining a boutique fitness studio. From channeling your Zen in yoga class to landing a mean roundhouse kick against a punching bag, there’s a local class to suit your personality and fit your hectic schedule. And if you need inspiration to meet other challenges in your life head-on, you’ll want to read Janvi Shahi’s story on page 20. Her courageous battle with a childhood disease and how she’s giving back as a high school senior will encourage you to be your best self each day. We also pay homage to local healthcare heroes in this issue who give back to our community through their talents and dedication. Being able to access topnotch medical professionals is a privilege we take for granted, but it’s nice to be reminded of just how fortunate we are to live in an area with easy availability to care. Here’s hoping your New Year is off to a great, healthy start. Now I’m going to figure out if somehow writing can be considered a form of exercise …

THE RIVER AT NIGHT ERICA FERENCIK JANUARY 10

Up a Creek Without a Paddle A terrible job, a family death and the end of a 15-year marriage: lately, life hasn’t been kind to Wini, the main character in author Erica Ferencik’s debut novel,“The River at Night.” When Wini and her three best friends take a hiking and rafting girls’ vacation in a remote area of Maine’s wilderness, things turn chaotic fast. While on their adventure, an accident leaves the foursome stranded without their raft or supplies. As night falls, they notice a campfire on a mountainside—what seems to be their only hope of survival. The novel becomes a real page-turner when the women realize the camp’s inhabitants aren’t the helpful harbingers they seem to be.

HIDDEN FIGURES IN THEATERS JANUARY 13

A Story of Untold Greatness Based on Margot Lee Shetterly’s book of the same name, the film “Hidden Figures” tells the story of three AfricanAmerican women, Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson, “Empire”), Dorothy Vaughn (Octavia Spencer, “The Help”) and Mary Jackson (recording artist Janelle Monáe), who all worked at NASA during the Space Race of the 1960s. Considered to be instrumental in the launch of John Glenn into orbit, this trio of mathematicians was known as the “human computers.” As African-Americans and as women, these three individuals blurred the race and gender lines to become an inspiration to all.

HOMELAND SHOWTIME JANUARY 15

Transfer of Power At the end of Season 5 of Showtime’s hit drama, “Homeland,” heroine Carrie Mathieson (Claire Danes) thwarted a terrorist attack in Berlin. In Season 6, we initially find her living in Brooklyn, New York, working for a foundation that provides aid to Muslims living in the United States. The storyline follows a transitional time for the U.S. government, as the newly elected president will soon take office. Season 6 will cover what takes place in America and abroad from election day to the inauguration. It’s unclear what Carrie’s role will be in this plot, but if you think the months leading up to our Election Day 2016 turned friends to foes, you are in store for an even more edge-of-your-seat plot.

TAD AND GINA TOMASESKI Founders of icare Rehabilitation Hospital in Flower Mound The husband-and-wife team of Tad and Gina Tomaseski came to care for patients via a fairly unorthodox route. Neither one initially aspired to be in healthcare, but together they found fitness and then wellness that led to a transformative journey to rehabilitation. Gina spent her youth training as an elite gymnast with her eye on the Olympics but suffered a careerending knee injury. During rehabilitation, she discovered a passion for therapy and went on to earn her doctorate while serving as director of rehabilitation centers and hospitals. Along the way she became a champion bodybuilder, fitness competitor, NASCAR pit crew leader and gold medal rower. In fact, she is still a world and national champion rower at the age of 52. As CEO of icare Rehabilitation Hospital, Gina parlays her competitive nature into championing for each patient who comes for care. “She is one of the most passionate clinical patient advocates I’ve ever seen,” says Tad, who was raised around a culture of caring and compassion as the son of a lifelong social worker. Tad Tomaseski met Gina at a bodybuilding competition over 30 years ago. A skinny kid, Tad found bodybuilding as a teen and went on to win titles as an adult. He then became the executive pastor of a large Frisco church, a public speaker and writer and producer of a program for those affected by and afflicted with PraderWilli Syndrome, a genetic disorder that causes obesity, intellectual disability and shortness in height. Together, he and Gina lead a unique team of rehabilitation specialists at icare, a facility they co-own with Darwin and David Deason. Darwin, a self-made billionaire and local health ally, sought out the Tomaseskis to care for his son David. A father of five, David suffered a massive stroke and, when the best rehab facilities couldn’t help him, Darwin heard about Tad and Gina through a 42 BYPAMELA PAMELAHAMMONDS HAMMONDS 12 ••BY

mutual friend. So impressed with the progress David made under their care, Darwin invested funds to make icare Rehabilitation Hospital a place where others could receive therapies under the Tomaseskis’ directives. “In a matter of months, David was so completely different that [Darwin] sat down with us and told us a hospital here was available,” Tad says. “And he wanted to make accessible to others what we provided to his son.” What makes icare’s approach unique is making the connection that healing is more than physical. “It’s mental and emotional as well,” Tad says. “When people are here, they’re like staying with family members. We get better results because of that.” Rhonda Shively was out of town on business last August when her husband, Larry, fell and struck his head on the corner of their bedroom dresser. As a result, Larry suffered a traumatic brain injury, including four brain bleeds, and was taken to a nearby hospital for surgery. “I was adamant that he go to icare for rehabilitation,” Shively says. “He couldn’t sit up on his own, stand, walk or speak without mumbling.” The Tomaseskis had previously treated Larry for a knee injury, and Shively knew her husband would respond to their therapies. What she didn’t realize was that, in addition to physical and occupational therapies, Larry would also receive cognitive therapy. “In the first week, I had a meeting with Tad and Gina, his nurse Becky, doctors and dieticians,” Shively says. “Everyone who touched him met with me for at least an hour to let me know about his progress. They even ordered him a special bed and gave me their cell numbers so I could call anytime I had a question. Someone would sit with him while he was eating, just to keep him company.” When Larry was released from icare in November, “He got pretty emotional,” Shively says. “The people there are like family. They gave me my husband back.” MELISSA KINNEY, M.D. Breast Surgeon at Medical City Lewisville, et al. Few diagnoses carry the fearsome tenor associated with breast cancer. Who can make all the difference in your journey to recovery is the physician providing your care. For breast cancer patients, Melissa Kinney, M.D., is not just a surgeon; she is a care coordinator. From finding a lump to determining the best course of removal and treatment, patients trust that Dr. Kinney

is there to help them not only receive care but understand their options. “I’ve witnessed when patients were not told properly,” she says. “It can be a complex and horrible time.” A recent breast cancer patient who underwent a double mastectomy says of her experience with Dr. Kinney, “Not only is Dr. Kinney a skilled physician, but she is also a caring person. She gives you all the choices, and you can never ask too many questions. I know that Dr. Kinney was meticulous with my procedure to ensure the best outcome clinically, physically and emotionally.” When a mass is first discovered—by the patient or by a physician—the next step is typically undergoing a mammogram or biopsy. From there it’s determined if a mastectomy (removing the breast) or lumpectomy (removing the mass) is the best course of treatment. “I’m usually the first person they see following a diagnosis,” Dr. Kinney says. “I can provide patients with an overarching picture of what their options include.” Then a plastic surgeon often steps in to perform reconstruction, and Dr. Kinney works with several she trusts. Sharn Barbarin, CEO of Medical City Lewisville, says that prior to Dr. Kinney, “We did not have a fellowship-trained breast surgeon on staff. Dr. Kinney partners with a plastic surgeon, which enables us to provide a higher level of care within our community. Dr. Kinney’s patients say that she empowers them to feel safe and in control in a vulnerable situation.” Which was completely true for a recent male breast cancer patient. “Dr. Kinney is the type of presence you hope to find in a physician during a life-changing crisis,” he shares. “When you face a battle with breast cancer, heartfelt connection is not only desired, but compulsory.” While rare, Dr. Kinney surgically treats male breast cancer as well as benign breast conditions, pain and infections. “Each patient is different and has a unique story,” she says. “I like getting to know them on a personal basis. It makes every day interesting.” Dr. Kinney is particularly focused on the recent advances in genetics and performs high-risk screening assessments of patients. “I can do testing on site for any markers of predisposition of breast cancer,” she says. Dr. Kinney grew up in Louisiana, attended college at Vanderbilt University and completed medical school at Louisiana State University. Following her internship and residency at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, she stayed to complete a fellowship in Surgical Breast Oncology. Dr. Kinney is now a wife and mom to two young boys; her family lives in Coppell. She enjoys cooking and baking and teaches choir to the threeyear-olds at her church. “I got here and loved it and wanted to stay,” Kinney says of her Texas home.

As a surgeon, Dr. Kinney says her role is part of the first positive step. “Removing the cancer is an optimistic part of treatment,” she says. “I enjoy the experience of being with patients every step of the way.” EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT AT TEXAS HEALTH PRESBYTERIAN HOSPITAL FLOWER MOUND Felicia Harding, director

When you enjoy your job and exhibit a high level of integrity, you do whatever is in the patients’ best interest...

Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Flower Mound opened its doors in April 2010, and, six months later, Felicia Harding came on board as the hospital’s Emergency Department director. In that role, Harding leads the team responsible for providing emergency medical care to patients when they arrive at the hospital. The Emergency Department team often looks for ways to support the local community and recently participated in the Flower Mound Rotary Fest Neon Night 5K Run. During the race, a runner suffered a cardiac event. Fortunately, five members of the hospital’s Emergency Department, including Harding, were running nearby. They rushed to render aid and administer bystander CPR until paramedics arrived, and the runner survived. “We were able to provide the necessary care during that emergency,” Harding says. She shrugs off any praise for her quick-thinking response. “Everyone I work with is a hero.” The hospital has been recognized for both its care for patients and treatment of its employees. The hospital was designated the Best Place to Have a Baby (North Texas Child, 2016) and was ranked number one nationally as the Best Place to Work (Modern Healthcare, 2016). The Emergency Department was voted Best of Denton County for three consecutive years (Murray Media Group, 2014-2016). When adding members to the Emergency Department team, the hospital looks for healthcare professionals with high energy who understand patient compassion and satisfaction. Harding says, “Word has gotten out that we deliver exceptional care, so our patients expect a lot from us.” The team has established such a close rapport that friendships extend beyond the hospital walls. “When you enjoy your job and exhibit a high level of integrity, you do whatever is in the patients’ best interest,” she adds. “Our team does amazing work.” Harding commends her team for their dedication to each patient. “Most of our team members live here and are dedicated to the success of our department,” she says. “Working at a community-based hospital, we are proud to be out in the town and see people we serve.”

EAGLE SCOUT COMPLETES CEMETERY PROJECT Michael Garner, 16, of Boy Scout Troop 280, cataloged well over 1,000 burial sites at the Flower Mound Presbyterian Cemetery for his Eagle Scout project. His unit leader, Jerry Simmons, says Michael was responsible for leading more than 20 scout-mates in recording the names, dates and location of each gravesite as well as photographing them. “Michael chose a very unique project,” Simmons says. “Most boys choose to build something for public use, but I think his idea will prove extremely helpful for people for years to come.” The data was submitted to the church and will be available online for users to access and search by name or date. Flower Mound Presbyterian Cemetery (on FM 3040) is the town’s oldest burial site and has tombstones dating from the early 1800s. Michael is the son of Paul and Tatyana Garner, Flower Mound.

“We are dedicated to providing family-centered care with our talented team of healthcare professionals, advanced technology and customer-friendly environment.” For years the community has trusted Medical Center of Lewisville for quality healthcare. As part of Medical City Healthcare, one of the North Texas region’s largest, most comprehensive healthcare systems, the hospital is now known as Medical City Lewisville. While a part of this system for a long time, uniting under one name allows the community to identify the family of facilities with a unified name. Patients can access the broad resources and expertise of the entire system—regardless of which hospital they choose for care. In the fall of 2015, MCL opened its 24-bed state-ofthe-art Emergency Department. The expansion supports the growing advanced needs of the pediatric population of the Lewisville/Flower Mound community. The new space includes a Pediatric Emergency Department, featuring a separate entrance and waiting room, dedicated pediatric rooms and pediatric-trained physicians and staff. A Level III Trauma Center, Medical City Lewisville has achieved Magnet recognition as a reflection of its nursing professionalism, teamwork and superiority in patient care. This designation is determined by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet Recognition Program, which ensures rigorous standards for nursing excellence are met or exceeded. With this credential, Medical City Lewisville is a proud member of the Magnet community—a select group of about eight percent of U.S. healthcare organizations. Medical City Lewisville is focused on providing high quality care to the community, committed to preventing, diagnosing and treating a broad spectrum of medical conditions. Above all else, the hospital staff is committed to the care and improvement of human life. This promise extends to our community through the involvement with local chambers, rotary clubs, LISD, community events and many area nonprofits. In the New Year, MCL encourages you to take control of your health. Incorporate healthy lifestyle choices in your daily routine: eat a balanced diet (like the DASH diet), stay active and get plenty of sleep.

ABC-Pediatrics is dedicated to serving children and families affected by autism spectrum disorder and other neurodevelopmental diagnoses. The support provided includes areas that have the most influence on day-to-day living, language, learning and behavior. Research shows that children succeed best when they are actively engaged in enjoyable hands-on experiences. Therefore, ABCPediatrics’ therapy program is designed to be interactive, with an emphasis on positive reinforcement, and provides interactions in an enjoyable, nurturing and encouraging environment. Managing-partner Barbara Cravey says patients’ families often ask, What is ABA? Applied Behavior Analysis considers the term “behavior” as “any response that can be observed and measured.” ABA therapy uses the principles of behavior to increase and decrease specific behaviors. ABC-Pedatrics’ therapy program includes a variety of evidence-based practices that you can integrate into daily routines at home. These methods will promote and support each child’s optimal development. ABC-Pediatrics partners with families to meet each child’s needs individually, while never forgetting that the whole child includes his or her family. Additionally, the team is very active in the autism community and participates in many local and national support programs, and provides advocacy through knowledge and guidance.

with a different character. The Make-A-Wish foundation gave me a lot of hope for the future—as if anything were possible.” Tragically, when Janvi was five, the cancer came roaring back. “We were on her last day of treatment. It’s hard to describe; we were celebrating. She was finished!” says Manu. “Then her oncologist called and said she’d had a relapse on her final day. It was devastating.” The cancer returned more aggressively than it had arrived the first time. Janvi was given a 20 percent chance of survival and was told she needed a bone marrow transplant. “As Indians, we were limited in finding a donor match,” says Manu. Finding a bone marrow donor is far more complex than matching blood types, according to the National Donor Match Program. First, the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) tissue types must match closely. Because HLA markers are inherited, some ethnic groups have more complex tissue types than others. Those of Asian descent, including those of Indian descent, have only a 72 percent chance of finding a match. Because stem cells from umbilical cord blood give those who are difficult to match a higher chance of finding the right HLA markers, Janvi was a candidate. On Father’s Day, when Janvi was five, the Shahis traveled to Duke Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, for an umbilical cord blood transplant. “This was when I remember Janvi really starting to color and draw,” says Manu. “I didn't know it then,” Janvi says, “but art became my therapy early on. I loved it; I didn’t see it as therapy.” At Duke, Janvi hoped that she’d have another wish to look forward to once her treatment ended. Her mother was —Janvi Shahi sad to inform her that Make-AWish grants only one wish in a lifetime per child. “I told her, ‘Listen, Janvi. We turn things around here, and we’ll start granting wishes for others,’” says Manu. “She asked me, How? And of course, I didn’t know how, not then. I just knew that somehow, we would.” Miraculously, the cord blood transplant saved Janvi’s life. She’s been cancer-free ever since.

If it wasn’t for Make-A-Wish, I wouldn’t be who I am today.

UNVEILING HER TALENT Now Janvi spends six nights a week, for two hours at a time, painting in the studio of master painter Steve Ko in Lewisville. Known as “the commissioned portrait painter for the Royal family,” Ko has painted portraits 30 • JAN 17

for Princess Diana, George H.W. Bush and the former King of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuck. Ko graduated with honors from the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California, and has taught portraiture and landscape painting for over 26 years. “When Janvi came to me, she was a raw diamond,” says Ko. “She showed me very good potential. My goals for students like Janvi are to help them prepare their portfolios for college applications.” Janvi has taken private art lessons since she was seven but only recently began working with Ko. Janvi was recently accepted to the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), one of the premier art schools in the United States. Yet she continues to paint each evening with Ko, her eyes set on a larger prize. Since she was 12, Janvi has donated paintings to Make-AWish. “My first painting sold for $40, and I'm still proud of that,” she says. “But last year, one sold for $14,000.” “Her last painting—I was reluctant for her to donate it,” says Ko. “It was just so good. I am happy it went for such a good cause.” When she began donating to Make-A-Wish five years ago, Janvi set the ambitious goal of raising $100,000. She credits Make-A-Wish for giving her the motivation to continue painting. To date, she has raised $98,000 and, with the 2017 Mother’s Day Fundraiser still ahead of her, she seems well poised to exceed her goal. “Her heart and her cause are in the right place,” says Manu. “She has found her treasure, and that is what makes her happy.” Last October, Janvi was awarded Make A-Wish’s 2016 Lori Schultz-Betancourt Indomitable Spirit, their highest award for volunteers. Earlier that day, Janvi and several others visited the zoo, where she came face to face with a lion. On stage, when receiving her award, she recounted what that meeting meant to her. “Today, seeing the lion at the zoo, I started crying,” she said. “I realized that if it wasn’t for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, I wouldn’t be who I am today. It changed my life forever. Every day, I feel like my cancer was just another book of my life, and my art is who I am today.”

LOOKING AHEAD In the final scenes of “The Lion King,” Simba chooses not to kill his Uncle Scar. He tells him instead, “Run. Run away, Scar, and never return.” Following the battle between Simba and Scar, hyenas—earlier betrayed by Scar—then attack him to supposedly finish him off. The fate of Scar plays out off-screen. It is a reminder that cancer isn’t yet conquered. Janvi seems to understand that, too.

Today, she’s looking forward to attending SCAD. “I’ve had so much classical cross-training,” she says. “But I’m going to begin my studies as an undecided major.” She’s quiet for a moment, as though almost afraid to articulate her next big dream. “But I think I might go toward illustration. Maybe one day I could work for Pixar,” she says. Her next thought comes out almost as a whisper. “Or Disney.” It feels like a circle of life, yet one that will continue on for many years for Janvi Shahi and her family as she follows her personal passions as well as her dreams of helping children with cancer. She’s an artist, a wish-granter and she’s a survivor. Perhaps she truly is a lion, after all.

f you sweat it out in fitness classes week after week, you probably want to see a return on those sweat sessions. You could step on the scale or gauge how your pants fit, but there’s a better way to monitor your progress. Naked, the world’s first inhome 3D body scanner, lets you track results like never before. It’s a full-length mirror and rotating scale that captures your 3D body model and sends stats straight to your smartphone. Not only can health enthusiasts track critical stats such as weight and body fat percentage, but they can also visualize their body’s real-time progress. There’s nothing like viewing your 3D image to inspire you to hold those planks a little longer or hit the rower a little harder. Whether you want to jumpstart healthy habits this year or fit back into your skinny jeans after the holidays, Naked is the high-tech tool to help you get there. Don’t worry about Naked being complex or clunky; it is designed to blend seamlessly into your daily routine without compromising looks or performance. The full-length sleek mirror fits perfectly in a bedroom or bathroom. The scale’s weight sensors are internal

instead of external, allowing it work on carpet as well as hard flooring. To access power, the mirror connects to a wall outlet, and the scale/turntable charges wirelessly through the mirror. Once it’s set up, just step on the scale and let Naked’s Intel RealSense Technology create your body model. The sensors use infrared light in a manner similar to an XBox Kinnect or a TV remote control. Naked calculates body fat percentage using the volume from your scan and your weight; it’s essentially a virtual hydrostatic (dunk tank) test. A full 3D scan takes about 20 seconds. The scanner also provides a heat map, showing exactly where your body is growing muscle (or accumulating fat) in real time. So if you suspect you have a few extra holiday pounds lingering, Naked will show you exactly where. Every aspect of Naked is designed to be efficient, elegant and user-friendly, from auto-user recognition and scan countdown to a low-battery alert and product updates. Consider it a souped-up version of a standard scale. While a traditional scale is one-dimensional—it doesn’t provide a broader picture of one’s overall health—Naked is changing the game. The technology gives users an unbiased, completely transparent view of the body. For those embarking on a true health journey, not just looking to shed a few pounds, Naked might just be a magic mirror.

Kumon Math and Reading Centers

Temple Christian Academy

Kumon instills in students the skills and mindset necessary to learn new material without being taught. With help from a certified instructor, children are able to move at their own pace through individualized instruction. When a student requires help, the necessary steps are taken to ensure the child can work on a skill until it’s mastered. By utilizing an independent, self-study curriculum, Kumon’s method of learning allows students to advance at their own pace. When children continue to study at a level that is appropriate for their ability, they will catch up with their peers and eventually advance far beyond the school grade level. Students who study far beyond school grade level develop self-learning ability and good study habits. These essential study skills, when applied across all schoolwork, will improve their performance.

Temple Christian Academy, a ministry of Temple Baptist Church in Flower Mound, assists parents in developing Biblically-based equipped young people who are faithful followers of Jesus Christ. The education team offers a Christ-centered education using the A Beka curriculum and partners with parents, encouraging them to serve in their local churches and other community organizations. The school is accredited through the American Association of Christian Schools (AACS). Students are emboldened to grow physically, mentally, socially and spiritually as outlined in Luke 2:52: And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man. One of the defining characteristics of Temple Christian Academy is a Biblical approach to all four of these areas. Students and their families are welcome to inquire about the application process.

winter retreat to Palm Springs, California, is a vacation of pleasant contradictions. Located in the southern region of the state, Palm Springs boasts cool mornings (44 degrees) that give way to warmer afternoons (70 degrees on average) in the winter months. Snow-capped mountains can be seen on the immediate horizon while driving down palm tree-lined streets under sunny skies on mildly warm days. When it comes to planning your itinerary for a trip to the Sonoran Desert, the possibilities are just as varied.

Shopping, Spas and Scenery If you prefer higher altitudes, a visit to the snow-capped San Jacinto Mountains is in order, and the best way to get there is the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. Other Rancho Mirage amenities include a spa and fitness center. RitzCarlton.com For a completely different experience during a stay in Palm Springs, the rustic yet modern Sparrows Lodge is located within the valley far below the mountains. The exposed beam ceilings and concrete floors take guests back to a time when hotels and motels were simply meant to be a place for resting your head at night. Although lodgers will be giving up closets, televisions and spa-like showers, each room has the basic essentials such as air conditioning and heat. And when you get hungry, pull up a chair at the Barn Kitchen, which serves a simple breakfast, sandwiches and the like for lunch, as well as family-style dinners. Sparrows Lodge is indeed laidback, but reservations are required for dinner. SparrowsLodge.com

Get a Taste of California Exploring the restaurant scene in Palm Springs requires venturing off premise from whichever hotel or lodge you book. Cheeky’s Palm Springs is a local favorite known for its pastries and beverages. All pastries, such as their famous cinnamon rolls, are made from scratch, as are the tempting array of beverages. If a cocktail calls for fruit, it is squeezed, pressed or pureed in-house. Open Thursday through Monday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. (breakfast is served all day), Cheeky’s menu changes weekly, and you are likely to find a favorite on Thursday that you’ll return for on Saturday. Other eateries worth checking out are Copleys On Palm Canyon, which serves seafood dishes, or Matchbox Palm Springs, which serves Italian fare. Cheekys.com

o n n i e M o n tg o m e r y f i r s t noticed 9Round fitness studio in Flower Mound’s Founders Square a year before she summoned up the courage to walk through the doors. “I was intimidated to check it out,” she says. “In my mind, everyone in there was buff.” But one day the door was propped open and curiosity got the better of her. “I’m such a non-worker-outer,” Montgomery says. But that’s a label she can’t attach to herself anymore. For the past two years, she has worked out at 9Round four days a week and admits she’s much stronger for it. “I tried big gyms and even a trainer and never stuck with anything until I found 9Round.” Robyn Harrigan found 9Round at the urging of her husband, but she didn’t stop by without calling first. “I talked to Christy [Williams, the owner] and told her I wasn’t comfortable in gyms,” she says. “From the first time I went in, I was hooked. Every day is different and no one is judging you—they’re too focused on getting through their three-minute session.” Harrigan has lost 30 pounds since that first day, and her husband, Kevin, is now a member as well. “I spent a lot of time feeling bad about myself, but I don’t now. I’ve never been in better shape.” When Christy Williams decided to open a 9Round kickboxing studio in Flower Mound three years ago, she was convinced that if the concept appealed to her, others would follow suit. “Fitness is not my background, and I could come up with every excuse not to work out,” she says. When the former hospitality executive decided to shift careers, 9Round made perfect sense. 9Round combines a personal training component with a drop-in approach to working out. Fitness becomes something you can commit to in 30-minute intervals with upbeat music and a noncompetitive environment. “It’s circuitstyle training that’s ideal for any fitness level,” Williams says.

Williams acknowledges that fitness fads ebb and flow but believes kickboxing is here to stay. “Every exercise can be modified for any fitness level, and everyone can devote 30 minutes to getting healthy.”

FINDING FITNESS THAT FITS Montgomery and Harrigan are not alone in their revelations. The majority of health-minded adults seek new ways to achieve their fitness goals. In fact, 70 percent of the 2,300 new health club facilities that opened in 2015 were boutiques and studios, according to the 2016 U.S. Industry Report from The International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association. Perhaps ahead of the trend, Yong Swearengin opened her first SunstoneFIT nine years ago. Her studio offers personalized fitness for the mind and body in a variety of disciplines, including yoga, Pilates, barre and cycling, among others. With a Flower Mound location having opened in 2011 and now 15 locations in North Texas, SunstoneFIT epitomizes the convenience factor that translates to client loyalty. “A boutique fitness studio is going to work if the concentration of people live close by,” Swearengin says. “Some people will drive for a workout, but I don’t think a lot of people do 46 • JAN 17

that. They want it to be a blip in their daily routine—go in, get it done and come out.” The studio and boutique fitness movement may not be a new trend, but as the numbers suggest, this exercise arena is certainly experiencing growth. Here in North Texas, residents of suburban cities such as Flower Mound, Coppell and Southlake have seen quite a few boutique fitness studios open up shop within the past few years. Some are national or international franchises, such as CycleBar, 9Round and Pure Barre in Flower Mound. Other fitness boutiques and studios in the area were started by local entrepreneurs with a vision to help people live healthier lives in a specialized way, such as Urban Vybe and NexGen Fitness.

REINVIGORATING THE FITNESS ARENA Staying healthy has become more than just purchasing a monthly membership and crossing your fingers you’ll get up in the morning to go work out. Self-motivation is hard. But these fitness studios and boutiques are working to change that mindset. Consider the CycleBar franchise, for example. The studio offers three core cycle classes along with a beginner’s intro class. The classic ride combines competition, choreography and classic elements of cycle in a 50-minute timeframe. The 50-minute connect ride focuses more on connecting with the bike and less on stats and competition. And finally, the performance ride, for clients who prefer a more challenging workout, includes stats and competition. fmStyleMagazine.com

THREE

hot fiitness trends in 2017

1. fiitness trackers From fitbit to Garmin and beyond, wearable technology is here to stay—and will be bigger than ever this year.

2. group exercise programs Energy-packed classes will dominate the fitness scene this year, so get ready to sweat it out with like-minded exercise enthusiasts.

3. exercise as medicine A jog a day keeps the doctor away? Apparently so. This year, expect health professionals to include physical activity in treatment plans. Source: health.usnews.com

Studios like CycleBar are indeed customized for a more authentic experience, but this experience isn’t limited to indoor cycling, yoga and barre. What you might think of as a typical “big box” gym experience can be had on a smaller level too, which fits right into the studio and boutique trend. NexGen Fitness founder and owner Bryan Whatley opened his studio’s Southlake location in 2014. Since then, NexGen has expanded to seven other markets in North Texas including Flower Mound and Colleyville. Each NexGen studio has two or three private suites where instructors provide oneon-one training. Each customized session lasts 45 minutes. “This unique model allows our trainers to know exactly how to motivate each individual client,” Whatley says. It’s no doubt that trainers and instructors play an important role in the success of a fitness studio. However, the bonds formed between clients can extend beyond the walls of the gym. Stacy Wise and Jo Stokes, co-owners of Urban Vybe in The Shops at Lakeside, learned this firsthand when they organized their first fitness retreat to Costa fm STYLE Magazine

Rica. “We offered 15 spaces and quickly sold out,” Stokes says. The experience featured zip lining, hiking, yoga and meditation as well as freshly prepared meals from a personal chef. Back in the Flower Mound studio, Wise and Stokes see clients form friendships with lunch dates often following a class. Teachers get to know clients on a first-name basis because class sizes are intentionally small. “A lot of what we do at Urban Vybe comes from what we learned firsthand in big box gyms,” says Stokes, “and much of that is what didn’t work. We love being able to personally serve clients and create a community here.” Urban Vybe opened in March and already enjoys a robust membership over 200 strong. “In our yoga class, we’re able to do a lot of hands-on assistance with our clients to ensure poses are done correctly,” Stokes says. “You won’t find that in a big gym.” Urban Vybe also has infrared heating in its hot yoga classes so the surfaces are warm but the air stays cool. “It’s a much more comfortable and safer way to experience hot yoga,” she adds. Whether individuals decide to pick a class at various studios to attend off and on during the week or they attend one studio daily, one thing is certain: They have plenty of choices. And by offering different choices, studios and boutiques will charge ahead in the ever-competitive fitness market. JAN 17 • 47

here’s Tex-Mex and then there’s French-Mex, south-of-the-border fare with a straight-out-of-Paris influence. If it’s hard to wrap your head around this food fusion, just plan a trip to Madrina. The swanky eatery in Highland Park boasts a menu that’s refreshingly different: elegant Mexican dishes with French accents. If you’re craving chips and salsa, this isn’t the place for you. Madrina has received accolades such as D Magazine’s Restaurant of the Year and has been hailed as one of the “10 Sexiest Restaurants in Dallas-Fort Worth” by Zagat. We can certainly understand why. With traditional French cooking techniques that flirt

with irresistible Mexican flavors, it’s a recipe for a captivating evening—or at least an unforgettable meal. “We like to blur the line between things that are traditionally French and traditionally Mexican,” says David Fingerman, executive chef. “Most modern kitchens take root in French technique, but we like to play with how we can apply that to modern Mexican flavors and vice versa.” With Fingerman at the helm in the kitchen, Madrina turns out a procession of dishes that is refined and full of flavor without packing the heat of many Mexican favorites. Standout dishes include the Tacos de Chivo (braised goat, avocado, pasilla, parsnips and baby greens) and the Enfrijolada (duck confit, cilantro tortilla,

serrano chile, black bean puree and queso fresco). Regulars never miss the Wild Setas (Spanish for mushrooms), a nest of fried hen-of-the-woods, royal trumpet and beech mushrooms set atop a cilantro-scented poblano sauce. The dish is served with warm, handmade corn tortillas for a one-of-akind taco experience. Fingerman’s personal favorite menu item, the Quail Gordita, happens to be a flavor-packed example of French-Mex fare. Envision lightly battered quail stuffed with chorizo and queso Oaxaca on a bed of incredible purple hulls. “It’s a twist on a traditional dish that has a Texas feel,” he says. “It’s a great-looking dish with a down-home vibe that is just really unique. I’m a huge fan.” Whether it’s a dish on the Sunday brunch or dinner menu, you can count on it being original, fresh and inspired. Fingerman has made it a personal passion to push the envelope and offer up inventive tastes that bridge the culinary worlds. “I’m always looking at how we can challenge ourselves,” Fingerman says. “Working with seasonal ingredients is a big part of our inspiration. Different foods are available at different times of the year, so we always aim to reflect that in the menu. Seasonal changes keep variety in our guests’ mouths and keep our cooks from becoming complacent.” The ingredients at Madrina are also locally sourced, so you can rest assured that the Beef Tartare, Filet Au Poivre and even the Gateau Noir on the dessert menu are made from ingredients as nearby as possible. The farm-to-table trend is one of Fingerman’s favorite culinary movements. “It’s important to know where your food comes from,” he says. “I take advantage of every chance I get to work with a local product from a farmer I believe in.” Sophisticated French-Mex doesn’t end at the plate; Madrina’s bar, which features 120 bottles of wine, separates cocktails into French and Mexican-inspired categories. The diverse drink menu features a handpicked selection of agave-distilled spirits such as mezcal tequila from Mexico and aperitifs from France. For those wanting a French-inspired beverage, we suggest the Jack Rose, a handcrafted blend of apple brandy, house grenadine and lemon juice. And for a Mexican-influenced cocktail, we like the Daisy, a mix of Blanco tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice and doctored agave. If a creative cocktail is how you start your meal, end your meal at Madrina with the Horchata Pot-Au-Crème. It’s the French classic deliciously reimagined with 24-hour sweet rice milk, toasted almonds and piloncillo. Madrina’s churros are another reason to save room for something sweet. They’re made with hazelnut sugar, vanilla cream and spiced cocoa for a truly French-Mex dessert. The next time you crave a little Mexican food, don’t settle for a queso-drenched burrito; expand your palate with the culture-intertwining menu and imaginative fare at Madrina. French-Mex blurs the culinary lines in the most delicious possible way.

With fresh seafood, cold craft beer and a place for kids to play, we have a crush on crustacean purveyor Craft & Crab. The 10,000-square-foot restaurant is situated along the ever-busy Highway 121 in Colleyville, but you’ll feel like you’re in a New England crab house as you feast upon crabs and other seafood (and non-seafood) bites. You might expect sophistication and elegance at a Colleyville seafood spot, but Craft & Crab is different. Instead, the space exudes a family-friendly, laid-back vibe. It’s a destination where your whole crew can enjoy a good meal and have some fun— from the boat-themed playground for kids to the corn hole, life-size Jenga and swings at the bar for adults. The restaurant aims to revive family mealtimes, when everyone gathers around the table and digs in. When you order family-style portions, expect a pile of seafood to be dumped on your paper-covered table. The hunger-busting Fried Fisherman—one of the many family feasts on the menu—is a heaping helping of oysters, shrimp, redfish or catfish served with fries and hushpuppies. Pick your feast, then pick from 150 varieties of craft beer or one of the restaurant’s specialty cocktails (we’re partial to the banana cream rum Mai Tai) to wash it all down.

Don’t have your brood with you? Order an individual entrée, which is uniquely served on a disposable palm container made from fallen palm leaves. It’s a cool Caribbean influence—just like the sounds of Bob Marley drifting through the air and the coconut margarita that beckons from the bar. On our lunch visit, we dove into the fried shrimp basket after devouring a satisfying house salad. There are shrimp—and then there are the titans that come forth from Craft & Crab’s kitchen. These mammoth, lightly battered beauties will fill you right up. We also polished off the steak fries and small dish of coleslaw, which made nice accompaniments to the shrimp. The menu is seafood-skewed but offers plenty for land lovers, too, from rotisserie chicken and barbecue pork to corn dogs and mac and cheese for the kids. Whether you grab a spot on the massive patio or enjoy your feast in the dining room, there’s not a bad seat in the house. Inside, every wall is plastered with HDTVs, so you can grab a pint of craft suds and not miss a minute of your favorite sporting event. For the quintessential crab house experience without venturing far from home, Craft & Crab is the place to go. Be sure to put it on your (galvanized) bucket list this month.

GET TO KNOW FITNESS—THE JESSE JAMES WAY

W

hat started out as a hobby 22 years ago has become a passion and a thriving business for Jesse James Leyva. When he opened Jesse James Fit 10 years ago, Jesse’s goal was to design a boutique-style personal training studio that provided a different experience from our community’s big box fitness centers. He devised a personal training studio to provide weight-loss programs, indoor boot camps, individualized training, group training, couples training, youth programs, senior programs and military prep training. Today, Jesse James Fit is one of the largest personal training studios in the nation focused on family fitness, health and wellness, working with a vast array of clients—from youth, seniors and athletes to executives and parents, each with his or her own personal fitness goals.

I AM MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT: helping people be the best they can be. I believe through physical training, you push yourself to grow and expect more from yourself. Through that process, it carries over into other areas of your life. I genuinely want to help people be their best selves when it comes to their health, wellness and mindset. Big life changes start with small steps, which is why I’m passionate about being a positive influence in the journey of our members as they transform their lives and lifestyles. At Jesse James Fit, we’re their cheerleaders, their best friends and their shoulder to cry on. We encourage, push and help members find that inner strength to cross the finish line and raise their expectations of themselves and what they are capable of. But at the same time, we have a lot of fun. After all, that’s what fitness should be. I’M MOST PROUD OF: offering a topnotch fitness facility to Flower Mound with an incredible staff of motivators. Jesse James Fit is not a run-of-the-mill warehouse gym. We’re a personal training studio focused on family fitness, health and wellness. Jesse James Fit is a 7,000-square-foot studio with 17 fantastic trainers who all work together to create a friendly, comfortable fitness home that is tailored to our clients. We know our clients by name. We offer an award-winning fitness formula that combines strength training, nutrition plans and cardio workouts suited for each individual’s needs and goals. For five consecutive years, Jesse James Fit has been voted the Best of Denton County.

SOMETHING YOU’LL NEVER SEE ME DO: is to discourage someone from committing to be their best. We should all commit to be the best that we can be and encourage others to make positive changes in their lives. That’s what we do at Jesse James Fit. We want to help our clients put their health front and center, so they can be the best they can be for themselves and for their families. I USUALLY START MY DAY BY: listening to an inspirational speaker to get my mind focused on positivity first thing in the morning. Every morning begins around 4 a.m. Then, depending on my schedule, I slip in some classical music to relax and prepare for the day at hand. Harry Connick, Jr., is an all-time favorite for cruising in the Jeep, but when it comes to my workouts, it has to be heavy metal. A TYPICAL DAY OFF FOR ME IS USUALLY SPENT: with my family. I am fortunate to have my family nearby—my beautiful wife, mother, sister and relatives. One thing we all have in common and enjoy doing is to spend a beautiful sunny day cruising in the Jeep. There’s nothing better… unless you had a little Harry Connick, Jr., music in the background.
