Besides discovering new ways to work up a sweat without moving a muscle, when you live in Texas, you also learn to embrace an unbridled sense of pride about the Lone Star State. You find a previously untapped passion for barbecue and high school football and learn to say “y’all” and eventually “all y’all” in a Texas drawl. So why do so many flock to our southern section of the U.S. and put down roots here in North Texas, even when fewer people than ever before are moving? Read stories of local families who recently moved to Flower Mound in “Destination: Texas” and explore the data behind the decisions of Texas transplants. We can bet it won’t be long before our new neighbors are finding themselves feeling oh, so FloMo. We curated a lighthearted list of why “You’re So FloMo If …” in this issue. Whether you’re a native Flower Mounder or nearly native, see if you can relate to what makes us unique. And because we just couldn’t contain ourselves once we got going, you can read a new quip every day this month on social media. Just look for #soFloMo for even more fun jabs about life here in the bubble. Many people may flock to Texas for the warmer temps, but July has us looking for ways to beat the heat. Why not grab colored pencils or markers and color our cover? If you’re thinking of putting in a new pool soon, you’ll want to read about the recent trends in HomeStyle. Or, if you spend time in your current pool, at the neighborhood pool or on the lake, be sure to check out Stuff We Love in Shop in Style for the latest in sun protective gear. So stay sun-safe, keep it cool and classy, FloMo, and we'll catch you next month.

DÉCOR TO YOUR DOOR Experience custom, beautiful and meaningful designs at your fingertips

I

n speaking with Christine Blythe, owner of Décor to Your Door, her contagious energy and gusto for creativity is palpable. She has had a passion for design and the knack for spacial organization all of her life, and her keen artistic abilities and talent for transforming living and working spaces are at the very heart of her business. Christine has been an interior designer for more than 23 years. Customization plays a key part in bringing any space together into a cohesive style. Having a professional designer with an eye for things like complimentary colors, unified patterns and spacial groupings makes all the difference when it comes to the end result. Most clients, Christine says, make choices based on preferences and then leave the rest to the designers. “Clients are always excited to see what we’ve come up with,” she says. The designing experience at Décor to Your Door is interactive, which means the designer leads the client through a selection process very carefully, step by step, allowing clients to make choices based on their own personal preferences. The designer is there to assist when the client needs help with a choice, such as “Will this fit?” or “How can we make this area beautiful as well as functional?” This approach sets the tone for expectations and simplifies the “mysterious process” of interior design, making the experience much more enjoyable for everyone. Christine designed her own interactive catalog that shows clients what furniture and textile options her shop offers. Clients rate each object throughout the decisionmaking process to narrow down their final selections, which ultimately reveals the master plan. Before such technology existed, multiple, massive catalogs were the only way of making these types of selections. The technology Christine uses in the designing stages streamlines the process tremendously. “As interior designers, we receive the latest fabrics and furniture styles six months to a year in advance,

Clients are always excited to see what we’ve come up with. compared to what the general public gets to see. This allows us to sustain a cutting edge on the current interior design trends,” Christine says. Christine is not just a designer; she’s not just a people person. She is an artist and creative type who also happens to be a keen businesswoman. This is a rare but incredibly valuable combination of traits, and if you’re going to invite someone to design and organize your living or working space, you can see why collaborating with her makes perfect sense.

BEHIND HER EYES | SARAH PINBOROUGH “Louise goes to work on Monday and discovers the man she recently made out with in a bar is her new boss. And the new friend she meets through a chance encounter turns out to be her boss’ wife. Or was it a chance encounter? Nothing in this crazy suspenseful story is what it appears to be, and the ending will blow your mind.” Sue Ridnour, Director of Library Services,

BECAUSE YOU LOVE TO HATE ME: 13 TALES OF VILLAINRY AMERIIE JULY 11 Why the Witches Went Wicked Sure, everyone knows the enemies of evil in traditional fairy tales. But have you ever wondered why those apples went bad? “Because You Love to Hate Me” retells 13 classic tales with a twist—from the villain’s point of view. This flipping of the script will tickle readers’ intrigue with a fresh new perspective on their favorite stories as reimagined by 13 bestselling authors and BookTubers.

DUNKIRK IN THEATERS JULY 21

All They Need Is a Miracle Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Dunkirk also features the big-screen acting debut for Harry Styles, musician for the uber-popular boy band One Direction. Styles plays the role of Alex, one of the British soldiers cut off from his group of Allied troops and surrounded by the German enemy on the beaches of Dunkirk, France. The story of their incredible evacuation takes place during World War II in the Battle of France.

FLOWER MOUND STILL ONE OF THE SAFEST TOWNS IN TEXAS Crime rates across the state are steadily declining and that bodes well for those of us who call Texas home. Flower Mound in particular is consistently finding its place among those towns that keep its citizens the safest. According to SafeWise, an independent review and comparison group, Flower Mound ranks No. 7 on its “50 Safest Cities in Texas” report. This is the third consecutive time Flower Mound has been ranked in the top 10 of SafeWise’s annual report and the third safety recognition the town has received so far this year. To compile the list, SafeWise culled from the most recent FBI crime data from 2015 to analyze and rank cities with populations of 10,000 or greater. From there, cities were evaluated on the number of reported violent crimes and property crimes in each city. A detailed report of the data can be found on SafeWise.com

HOWDY, PA'DNER! WHY SO MANY CHOOSE TO HANG THEIR HATS IN THE LONE STAR STATE

hen Charles Maskell retired from the U.S. Army in 2015, he and his wife, Wendy, decided to leave Boston, Massachusetts, for warmer weather. The Maskells had lived across the globe and experienced climates as varied as Alaska and Hawaii. Like many families, they chose to move to Texas over other states. In fact, recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that Texas is second only to Florida as the most moved-to state in America. So what motivates hundreds of thousands of people to move to Texas each year, and why do so many decide to become our neighbors? The Maskells were previously stationed at Fort Hood (Killeen, Texas), and both of their children attended Texas A&M University; their daughter encouraged them to consider Flower Mound because she had friends from here. “We wanted to be close to DFW Airport because we travel a lot,” says Wendy, “and we fell in love with Flower Mound because of the trees and sidewalks, and it’s close to the lake. We also wanted to be able to walk our dogs and feel safe. The community is just wonderful.”

THE ATTEVIK FAMILY PROUDLY CALLS TEXAS HOME LONE STAR STATUS The percentage of people moving in America fell to an all-time low recently, with only 2.4 percent of the population relocating to another state in 2015, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Of the more than 7.5 million who did move across state lines, over 550,000 came to Texas, increasing our population by two percent. Only Florida welcomed more new residents (585,000), representing 7.8 percent of all movers versus Texas’ 7.3 percent. Even when people move at historically low rates, Texas, and North Texas for that matter, becomes a top choice for obvious reasons: the climate, lack of state income tax (along with Florida), and our bustling economy. Those looking further into relocation find North Texas to have even more lifestyle enhancing amenities. According to BestPlaces.net 1,230 adults (aged 18 to 44) chose to relocate to Flower Mound specifically, placing our hometown among the top areas for not only working professionals and families to relocate, but retirees as well. CHOOSING OUR TOWN Prior to the 1980s, Flower Mound enjoyed relative obscurity. Then, from 1980 to 1990, the town’s population growth increased by an astounding 253 percent. The next decade saw another surge; from 1990 to 2000 Flower Mound’s population grew by an additional 227 percent. From 2000 to 2010, Flower Mound saw only a 28 percent spike in population, as growth began to level out. Less than a two percent growth rate was experienced last year. Still, Flower Mound was outpacing nearby communities during that same decade, such as Plano (a 17 percent population increase) and Grapevine (nine percent gain). And our small town kept pace with national big-city leaders such as Phoenix, Arizona, and Houston, Texas, which were crowned the seventh- and eighth-fastest growing cities of the past decade, respectively. Today, Flower Mound is home to 68,050 residents, an incredible four-fold increase in 27 years. 26 • JUL 17

So what is it about this small Texas town that people find so appealing? GoodCall.com, a consumer awareness organization that crunches data from multiple sources, recently published “2017 Best Cities to Build a Forever Home” and listed Flower Mound as its number three pick in the United States. Ratings were based on several metrics including crime rate, employment rate, home value statistics and proximity to a major metro area, just to name a few. Flower Mound has one of the lowest crime rates in Texas and is the safest large community (population over 50,000) in the state, according to ValuePenguin, a personal finance research and analysis group. NEW SHOPS, RESTAURANTS AND JOBS With population growth, economic growth naturally follows. An additional mixed-used development is under construction at The Riverwalk at Central Park. Similar to Lakeside DFW, The Riverwalk has both commercial and residential amenities, but also its own medical plaza and the town’s first hotel—Courtyard by Marriott River Walk. Some housing is finished and already occupied, while retail and restaurant construction is still in the planning stages. The Lakeside Business District has gone from open fields to a popular commercial zone with more than 45 businesses. Along with the commercial district, a variety of retail establishments and restaurants have opened on the town’s south side in the Shops at Lakeside, as well as residential neighborhoods, townhomes, condominiums and loft-style apartments. Jeff Thornton, senior vice president of Duke Realty, says, “Flower Mound’s Lakeside business district is very wellfmStyleMagazine.com

positioned from a location and market standpoint. On the north side of the airport, it’s evenly situated between DFW with the ability to go east/west and north/south on major highways and serve the entire North Texas area. This submarket is now an infill market [with few remaining spaces among current properties], which makes every piece of available land that much more desirable.” Thornton went on to praise the foresight of town planners. “Flower Mound did a great job developing the town’s master plan for the Lakeside area,” he says, “and that planning fostered the development of the park as a true class A-plus industrial park—from the types of the buildings, the feel of the park, the landscaping. It is truly topnotch and has been key in attracting the top corporate warehouse uses.” Adding to Flower Mound’s appeal for commercial growth is its ongoing AAA Bond Rating, solid tax base growth and an unemployment rate below the national average. Plus the town was recently awarded the Government Finance Officers Association’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award—the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting.

RELOCATE TO THE LONE STAR STATE! A GREAT PLACE FOR FAMILIES Flower Mound is also one of Texas’ best places for parents to live and work, and top-rated schools continue to be a natural draw for families. WalletHub surveyed all major cities in Texas regarding employment and ranked Flower Mound number four as one of the “Best Cities in Texas to Find a Job,” basing the decision on the following metrics: number of job opportunities, median annual household income, and housing and transportations costs. The Attevik family moved all the way from Sweden to Flower Mound in January. Ulf and Louise along with daughters Caroline, 13, and Ellinor 11, relocated due to Ulf’s job assignment in Denton. “We looked at Frisco, Southlake, Highland Village and Flower Mound,” says Louise, “because we needed to be close to Denton and to the airport—but not too close.” With 27 percent of our town’s population 17 years old and younger, the community has attracted family-focused and kid-friendly companies—such as music and dance studios, swim schools and child care centers—that thrive here as well. The Town of Flower Mound Parks and Recreation department maintains more than 50 parks and playgrounds, including green spaces with walking and biking trails, access to ponds for fishing and lots of shaded areas for picnics, birthday parties, outdoor activities and relaxing in general. Lewisville Independent School District’s (LISD) accolades are also factored in when choosing to move here, as it did for the Attevik family. “We wanted good schools for our girls,” Louise says, “and they’ve been taken excellent care of from day one. They made friends easily, and we’ve had super nice neighbors who have helped us adjust.” THE DRAW OF THE SCHOOLS Flower Mound’s two public high schools: Flower Mound (FMHS) and Marcus (MHS), both within the Lewisville Independent School District (LISD), score nine (on 10-point scale) for academics; more specifically, standardized test scores on the ACT and SAT exams, according to GreatSchools.org. On college readiness, both schools scored a perfect 10. This rating is based on graduation rate, Advanced fm STYLE Magazine

JUL 17 • 27

HOME ON THE RANGE Placement course participation and AP exam scores. FMHS and MHS both have 98 percent graduation rates; the state average is 89 percent. FMHS students have an 86 percent pass rate on AP exams and 82 percent of MHS AP students passed the advanced placement course exams. The Texas state average is 51 percent. This speaks volumes with regard to how both high schools in Flower Mound are preparing our students for college over other high schools in Texas. “LISD is a place where all students can thrive, no matter their area of interest,” says Superintendent Dr. Kevin Rogers. “Academics, fine arts, athletics, extracurricular club activities, advanced placement, dual credit, internships, career preparation, college readiness—the opportunities are limitless for students to be engaged in their school experience.” Students are served by outstanding educators at each of the 69 campuses in the district, backed by tremendous community support. “The 13 communities we serve approved a $737 million bond [May 2017], which will help us maintain facilities, build new campuses to support our growth, including the district’s second state-of-the-art career center, and implement safety and security and technology upgrades across the district,” adds Dr. Rogers. “This strong show of support is just another part of what sets our district apart and makes LISD a place families want to establish roots.” As kids grow, North Central Texas College in Parker Square offers a convenient option for continuing education and, also recently added to Parker Square, Midwestern State University has become Flower Mound’s first fully accredited four-year university. 28 • JUL 17

MOVE FOR THE KIDS, STAY FOR GOOD When you factor in amenities such as the Community Activity Center, the Flower Mound Senior Center, the Flower Mound Public Library and over 50 parks, it’s no wonder Flower Mound entices families to settle here—who seem in no hurry to leave. In 2016, 22 percent of our population was 55 and older. Warm weather, plenty of recreation such as hiking trails and golf, shopping, restaurants and easy access to DFW Airport has helped Flower Mound also appeal to retirees. Backing up this point, seven new age-restricted retirement communities and assisted living facilities have completed construction in Flower Mound over the past five years. Research performed by the Office of the State Demographer supports Flower Mound’s surge of seniors. The age category of Texans over 65 years of age is projected to grow at the fastest rate, tripling in size from 2010 to 2050, with those 45 to 64 being the second-fastest growing age group. Further research from the Office of the State Demographer projects Texas’ population to continue to increase, with Denton county coming in sixth of its top 10 counties for growth during that same 40-year span. The Town of Flower Mound estimates its population to reach 109,739 in 2040, making our town comparable to the number of people currently living in nearby Lewisville. Whether you’re new to Flower Mound or a recent transplant, we all share the common thread of being drawn to a community—and a state—that is destined for growth and change. fmStyleMagazine.com

DOCS Michael Hisey, M.D. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE RECOGNIZED BY YOUR NORTH TEXAS PEERS AS A TOP DOC? It is a great compliment to be selected as a Top Doc in my specialty. It is also great to know that other doctors trust me with the care of their patients and families. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR PARTICULAR SPECIALTY? I decided to pursue spine surgery as a specialty when I realized that the problems in spine are just being figured out. It is exciting to be in a field where there is ongoing research that I can participate in and clinical problems that require innovative solutions to cure. TELL US ABOUT THE LATEST PROCEDURES OR NEW TECHNOLOGIES YOU ARE MOST PROUD TO OFFER. My favorite new option for appropriate patients with neck or back disc problems is disc replacement. Most surgeons will fuse a disc that has degenerated. In many cases, though, a fusion patient is an excellent candidate to preserve motion. If so, they have the opportunity to get back to activities faster and to have a lower chance of needing additional surgery down the road.

“I use techniques that are scientifically validated to help relieve my patients’ pain and restore their function.” fm STYLE Magazine

hen you think Southern food, classics such as crispy fried chicken, shrimp and grits, and buttermilk biscuits probably come to mind. Grayson Social, a farmhouse-chic eatery in downtown Dallas, embodies everything you love about Southern cooking—and then takes it up a notch. Executive Chef Rebecca Jolly describes Grayson Social as a place to find comfort and make memories. “It’s southern dining with a twist,” she says, “a social space for food, cocktails and friends.” In creating the unique menu, Chef Jolly draws her culinary inspiration from seeing guests enjoy their meals, taking photos of their plates and sometimes boldly asking for the recipe. “That is a gift in itself,” she adds.

You’ll definitely find biscuits on the menu, but Grayson Social’s version has earned the name Killer Biscuits for their heaping helping of butter and Texas boldness. Naturally, Killer Biscuits pair perfectly with the Country Fried Yard Bird, or try the Redfish with Saffron Jasmine Rice and Crawfish Étouffée. Duck Wings or Chicken-Fried Quail for starters? Yes, please! While some menu staples such as the Frisée & Gold Beet Salad and Jumbo Shrimp & Grits grace both the lunch and dinner menus, for Grayson Social, seasonality is the buzzword. Fresh herbs and produce— even at the bar—find their way into nearly every dish. “Our summer menu features fresh

seasonal ingredients,” says Chef Jolly, “along with our much-anticipated Watermelon Mint Martini.” Chef Jolly honed her cooking prowess at an early age, standing elbow to elbow with her grandmother. “It was like magic to watch her,” she recalls. Today, Jolly likes to return the tutelage, teaching new cooks to hone their skills as she works alongside them. But her greatest pleasure comes from making Grayson Social’s guests happy, along with developing new and interesting flavor combinations. We’d like to think her grandmother would be proud of Chef Jolly’s pairings of tender Root Vegetable Succotash and earthy Huitlacoche Purée with the Mushroom Dusted Bay of Fundy Salmon and her inventive Sweet Corn Hummus. And who wouldn’t be delighted to try the White Chocolate Croissant Bread Pudding with Ancho Chile Caramel and Lavender Ice Cream? We can’t think of a better way to end a meal … until we spied the Nutella Mud Pie with Oreo Crust Cookies & Cream. Who says southern dining is for the faint of heart? If you have more restraint than we do— or you are on a special diet—you’ll find a bevy of salads and lighter fare to tickle your taste buds in a more responsible fashion. But we don’t blame you for planning your trip to Grayson Social to fall on your cheat day. Especially when you make a return visit. You’ll find the cozy, sundrenched dining experience at Grayson Social the perfect excuse to head to Dallas for a weekend brunch or a mid-week lunch date. Or come early for dinner any night of the week and sip a hand-crafted cocktail, such as a Lavender Julep or a Cucumber Gin Fizz, as the refreshing start to a night out. If you have friends in town who want to see Dallas touristy faves—such as The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealy Plaza, Majestic Theatre, the Magnolia Building (with the famous flying red horse) or Renaissance Tower— Grayson Social, located in the newly renovated historic LTV Tower, is just blocks away. call ahead for large groups and wear something loose-fitting. You’ll want to enjoy every last bite of your experience at this new Dallas hotspot.

Let’s Meet at the Creek Shoal Creek Tavern takes bar dining to a whole new level

SHOAL CREEK TAVERN 1701 Shoal Creek, Suite 100 Highland Village 972.317.2250 ShoalCreekTavern.com

Jim Verfuth is both puzzled and grateful that no one saw the space at Shops at Highland Village as the perfect location for a gastro pub. The space Verfuth loved for its proximity to the movie theater and easy access to parking remained vacant for years. “It had all the characteristics I wanted for great night life,” he says. In fact, it even had room for not one, but two patios. “It seemed like the perfect opportunity somehow got overlooked.” So Verfuth, who also owns Verf’s Grill & Tavern, began build-out on a restaurant that would offer not only the charm of a local bar, but also a menu worthy of five stars. Shoal Creek Tavern is not a typical bar that serves salty chips and spicy wings that make you thirsty for more beer. Its bona fide menu features two twice-daily chef specials, such as a Brisket Kobe Burger and Hatch Chili Chicken Empanadas, and appetizers including Pork Belly-Wrapped Scallops and Lollypop Lamb Chops. So don’t expect to see Meatloaf Monday or Taco Tuesday here. The menu bar has definitely been raised, including a scrumptious weekend brunch. As expected, the same attention to fresh seasonal ingredients spills over to the bar. Verfuth hired a trained mixologist—“The chef of the bar,” as Verfuth calls him—to produce hand-infused spirits and house-made syrups. “We barrel-age our own cocktails and infuse our own vodka without chemicals or artificial flavors,” he says. “We can use what’s in season to create unique drinks for our customers.” This month, Shoal Creek Tavern is featuring a fresh watermelon-infused cocktail—one that took 10 days for the mixture to ferment so the flavor would be full-bodied. But good food and drinks do not a successful bar make—the service also has to be special. Verfuth trained much of the staff at

LOCALFLAVOR review Shoal Creek Tavern at his Verf’s Grill & Tavern location to ensure customers would be treated like family the moment the doors opened. In addition to serving the highest quality food and beverages, “I tell our people that we are here to provide fun and relaxation,” says Verfuth. With that in mind, Verfuth designed the bar to be mammoth—a good 50 percent larger than the one at Verf’s and the largest in the area. He also made sure the two distinct patio areas were climatecontrolled for year-round enjoyment—with heating and air conditioning plus electrically powered screened walls that can be raised and lowered. “I love seeing a group of adults gathered around the bar—visiting with people they haven’t seen in a while and making new friends,” Verfuth says. “Shoal Creek Tavern has become a special community gathering place.”

sweet sip Carvao's own Caipirinha is a sweet sip of Brazil

Step away from the mojito and say no to a margarita. A caipirinha is what you should be sipping. If you’ve ever traveled to Brazil, you’ve likely been served the country’s national cocktail, a caipirinha. A simple concoction with only three ingredients, a caipirinha is tart at first until you sip longer and taste the sugar. Made with a Brazilian rum called cachaça (or pinga or caninha), it’s a refreshing summertime drink that’s perfect for sipping poolside on the patio. Make it at home or enjoy one at Carvao Prime Brazilian Steakhouse at Lakeside DFW.

SPECIAL ABILITIES OF NORTH TEXAS WELCOMES NEW LEADER

N

early 25 years ago, a group of concerned parents founded Adult Day Care of North Texas to provide support and stimulation for their grown children with special needs. Over the years, the name would change and the mission would expand to include a second location, but the passion never wavered. Last July, Special Abilities of North Texas was crowned Nonprofit of the Year for 2015 at the annual Unity in Communities luncheon. In January, JaChel Redmond took the helm as president and CEO. WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO: ensuring that adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities have a place to go when they age out of the public school system. Special Abilities of North Texas is a 501 (c)(3) charitable nonprofit committed to creating enriching experiences for adults with special needs in Denton and surrounding areas. At our campuses, they continue to learn and grow to lead fulfilling lives where they are included in the community. We also provide respite for caregivers to help lessen the hardship that sometimes comes with caring for a family member with special needs. I AM MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT: being of service and making a difference in the lives of people and communities. I have been in the nonprofit sector for nearly my entire career, with the exception of a brief stint marketing commercial real estate. I learned during that short time, in a profit-driven atmosphere, that it did not feed my spirit like other positions I’d held in social service. It served as confirmation that my mandate in life is to work in a field that is solely about giving back and enhancing the lives of others. Although it’s not always the most lucrative, the satisfaction I receive through my work is immeasurable. PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW THAT: I began working in the nonprofit industry at a community leadership organization as the receptionist. I answered phones, made coffee, checked mailed. I was so inspired by my boss and community leaders, that

the experience shaped my career path and led me to where I am today. OUR YOUTH WOULD BE WISE TO: be willing to learn and serve. We live in a time where it’s easier than ever to start a business or a solo venture. I love that our society is breeding a world of wonderful entrepreneurial spirits. In my 20s, I was the same and, truth be told, I still am. However, I would encourage millennials to put themselves in a position to learn and grow under the leadership of others first. You either learn how to do what you do better, or you learn what not to do. Work in the field or volunteer with organizations that interest you. Doing this will help prepare you to launch your own endeavors. You might even discover that your entrepreneurial spirit is best put to use leading an existing organization that aligns with your passion. MY HIDDEN TALENT: is singing the blues. I am originally from Memphis, Tennessee, which prides itself on being “The Home of the Blues.” I think the talent itself comes from my father. He sang in blues clubs around Chicago many years ago. My longterm bucket list item is to book a gig and belt out “These Last Two Dollars,” by the late great Johnnie Taylor. Look for me in a few years at a venue near you. MY FAVORITE HOLIDAY IS: New Year’s Eve. I experience an intense sense of gratitude for making it through another year. It’s a time when I reflect on all the good in life, people I have lost and new souls that have entered. I love the idea of a fresh start.

lather on your sunscreen and suit up—it’s time to hit the beach. But forget the snorkel and instead grab a surfboard. Whether or not you have the know-how shouldn’t stop you—surf schools abound on world-famous shores. There’s also the boogie-board option if a fullsize surfboard is intimidating. They are just as exciting and make learning to navigate the waves easy and fun. Rather watch the waves than catch them? These beaches also provide the perfect sun and sand for catching rays. Whatever your preference, make like a tourist and immerse yourself in the culture of a surfer town, dude.

Huntington Beach, California You can’t talk surfing in the United States without mentioning Huntington Beach, California,

which is aptly named Surf City, USA. The town tops many a list of the best places to surf not only in America, but also in the world. Five beaches line the 10 miles of uninterrupted sand in Surf City, USA. Huntington City Beach is known for the Huntington Beach Pier, which serves as a tourism totem for the more than 11 million annual visitors to this beach. The waves cycle with a consistent swell, making Huntington Beach home to numerous surf competitions. Bolsa Chica State Beach is known for having waters suitable for all skills, so you’ll find most of the novice surfers practice their moves here. Huntington State Beach is best known for body- and boogie-boarding along with bonfire nights. Rounding out the list are Sunset Beach and Huntington Dog Beach, which may be a canine and companion hotspot on land, but don’t expect to send Fido to any surf schools. If you’re looking for picturesque beaches to visit sans surfing, this famous seaside city in southern California also has you covered. Just be prepared for the masses of visitors who flock to Huntington Beach each summer. Stake your claim early on whichever beach you plan to roll out your towel. SurfCityUSA.com

North Shore, Oahu Island, Hawaii While our entire 50th state is a beach-lover’s paradise, if you want to give your board a ride in famous waters, head to Waimea Bay. Known as the birthplace of big wave surfing, the bay is located off Oahu Island’s North Shore. This historical landmark for surfers is home to competition after competition, including the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Other North Shore beaches with surf-worthy waves include Ehukai (Banzai Pipeline) and Sunset Beach. During the summer months, the waves subside enough to make the Pacific waters along North Shore Beach suitable for swimming and pleasant enough for beach picnics. The North Shore town of Haleiwa is a laid-back community of surf enthusiasts and has become a social and artistic hotspot for residents and visitors alike. Art galleries, restaurants and shops speckle the streets of the town known for its country ambiance. GoHawaii.com

Mamanuca Islands, Fiji It’s no wonder the hit reality television program “Sur-vivor” has chosen the Mamanuca Islands of Fiji as the location for two of its seasons. The land and waterscapes of the group of 20 islands, situated in the waters of the Pacific Ocean, are simply breathtaking. With palm tree-lined beaches, crystal clear waters and live coral reefs, the Mamanucas offer plenty of nature mixed with a luxury resort here and there. However, if you’ve come to surf, the island chain is also home to awe-inspiring breaks. Your surf skills should be on the upper end of a scale that measures easy to difficult waters to navigate with your board. While Desperations might be aptly named, don’t let Swimming Pools fool you. The six main breaks off the Mamanuca Islands are not for the faint of heart. But, if you are a land lover, watching shortboarders, longboarders and bodyboarders maneuver their way through the tubes can be just as fun. Fiji.travel

Hossegor, France Located Located in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France, the town of Soorts-Hossegor is known as the surfing capitol of Europe. Hossegor lays nestled in the southwestern-most corner of the country right above Spain’s northern border. With its close proximity to some of the best surfing waters in the Atlantic Ocean—and it’s more than four miles of beach—Hossegor gives summer tourists everything they want in a surfer’s holiday. For experts who wish to tame these waters, world-renown waves can be found in such sweet spots as Gravière and La Nord along Hossegor’s coast. However, if you aren’t an experienced surfer, book a class at one of the many surf schools in town. And if you’d rather stay dry and just soak up the rays, Hossegor also boasts some of the cleanest beaches around. Take a break from the sun to visit Hossegor’s Market Hall. Now open 365 days a year, the enclosed marketplace boasts over a dozen vendors selling foods such as fresh vegetables and oysters. Hossegor.fr 50 • JUL 17

L

ike any home feature, backyard pool designs evolve over time. Today’s sleek edges and clean lines create a minimalist look that effortlessly transitions from the surrounding deck and seating areas. The simple, sophisticated design trend proves you don’t need a lot of flash in your splash.

CLEAN AND CLEAR Particularly in Texas, yesterday’s pools tended to look as though they were carved from the hillside—even if the surrounding terrain was flat. Large boulders served as leaping ledges, and stacked stones often sputtered waterfalls from within. While these freeform designs certainly created an illusion of a natural swimming hole, the rough edges provided the perfect place to crack a chin or bonk a noggin. Plus, keeping all those rocks secure with mortar added a maintenance element and a slip hazard. Today’s clean edges—or even infinity edges—make the pool a backyard feature that complements the surrounding landscape without competing with it. Smooth decks and patios practically glide into the water’s surface and sightlines continue uninterrupted. Even sunning ledges seem to unceremoniously rise from the water with grace. HIGH-TECH LIGHTING Not only does the design of a pool installed today differ from one installed five to 10 years ago, technology has certainly made illuminating your backyard pool more sophisticated than ever. Popular features such as Light-Emitting Diodes (LED) lights are not only energy efficient, bright and durable,

but also come in a rainbow of color options. Traditional blue always looks inviting, but don’t be shy about letting your family’s personality show with your choice of colors. LED lights are also heat-resistant and can even be used in the submerged features in your pool. Fiber Optic lights offer waterproof and moisture-resistant illumination that can be submerged and installed along the pool floor. You can even create glowing lines for evening lap swims. With the right lighting, when the sun goes down, the ambiance of your pool is undeniably enhanced. SAFETY: ALWAYS IN STYLE Every day in the United States, 10 people drown on average in non-boating incidents. About one in five who drown are children 14 and younger, and for every child who drowns, another five receive emergency care from nearly drowning, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s latest data. Keep rescue equipment close at hand and ensure every person in the house over age 12 is CPRtrained. Install slatted fencing with self-closing, self-latching gates around the pool to keep toddlers from wandering too close. Children’s Health urges families to install alarms on doors and gates leading to the pool and underwater pool alarms to warn you if someone hits the water. The hospital also encourages skipping the inflatable arm floaties and using only U.S. Coast Guardapproved personal flotation devices on your children and non-swimmers at all times— in and around the pool.

The women behind the videos, Kristin Hensley and Jen Smedley, are taking their comedy around the U.S. this summer as they go on the Mom’s Night Out: Summer Break Tour. Invite all your mom friends to the show at the Majestic Theatre in Dallas on July 28. You’ll instantly feel comfortable in this uproariously honest show, where Kristin and Jen share personal stories about nighttime routines, stretch marks, Spanx, summer break and everything in between. For more than 40 years combined, Kristin and Jen have been performing, teaching and writing comedy. They went to the same school in Nebraska but did not meet until they were both performing stand-up at an underground comedy club. Since April 2016, the duo has made more than 40 videos, each one amassing hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube and Facebook—and some with more than three million hits. They also post funny updates and live steams on their Facebook page, which has more than 700,000 likes. Get dressed up with your girlfriends, and leave your husbands and kids at home for a night of mom-to-mom bonding over all the shared experiences (glamorous and not-so-much) that all moms can relate to. In the words of Kristin in her “I Mom Friend So Hard” video, “It’s so important to make really good mom friends!” And there is no better way to make those friends than by laughing together, guaranteed.

Students in first through eight grades will learn how to sing and dance, design and execute sets and costumes, and everything else about musical theater. At the end of the camp on July 20, the kids will put on a performance of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid Junior” for the public, free of charge. It’s your chance to see your little fish in action before he or she becomes a big star!

WINSPEAR OPERA HOUSE | Magic is real—all you need is a little pixie dust. “Finding Neverland,” directed by Tony Award-winner Diane Paulus, tells the tale of how Peter Pan came to life. It follows the life of playwright J.M. Barrie, who finds inspiration in four young boys and their mother. Barrie’s play about pirates, adventure, flying and the power of staying a kid in Neverland, once impressed London theatergoers and continues to inspire us today.
