Good fences make good neighbors, or so says Robert Frost in his poem “Mending Wall.” While I’m not one to argue with a fellow writer, I will challenge the notion that staying sequestered from those next door makes for a better life. My fence serves one purpose— it keeps my crazy dog from running amok. So when I read a statistic that only about 20 percent of people regularly spend time with those living next to them, I was dismayed. And then to read on and realize one-third never interact with their neighbors made me wonder where these people live—certainly not on my quiet street in Flower Mound. Socializing with our neighbors has made life far richer than I imagined possible. If you somehow feel unconnected to those near you, I hope after reading “The Art of Being Neighborly” on page 56, you’ll be inspired to reach out to your neighbors and discover a sense of community. Whether you greet a new neighbor with a bottle of wine or a home-baked treat or offer to entertain the kids of a single mom who needs a break, being neighborly is a lost art in need of resurrecting. One local woman answered the ultimate call to love thy neighbor and, through her foundation, Journey to Dream, founded a homeless shelter for area teens. Another statistic that saddened me: Hundreds of teens in our area are homeless. Unbelievable, right? Kim Hinkle decided to do something about it. Read her inspiring story on page 32 and learn how you can get involved in helping our at-risk youth. You might also not be aware of some famous neighbors we have here in Flower Mound—including a state senator (page 23) and a professional golfer and Olympian (page 60). We’ve also learned more about some amazing women in our community and encourage you to get to know them in our Women in Business special section. As we go to press, I’m making plans to host our annual neighborhood Halloween party--complete with homemade chili and tons of toppings. If you host a Halloween event, be sure to tag your photos on social media: #fmStyleHalloween. We’d love to meet your neighbors!

THE MALIBU SESSIONS COLBIE CAILLAT OCTOBER 7

Easy, Breezy Colbie Two-time Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Colbie Caillat brings a little sunshine and warmth to your fall with the release of her new album “The Malibu Sessions.” This is her first release under her own label—PlummyLou and RED Distribution—a move she made to gain complete control over the writing, performing and production process. Of the album she said, “I’ve always been inspired by classic rock from the 1970s and how records were made at that time. There’s a lot of Paul Simon, Fleetwood Mac and Tom Petty influences in these songs.”

THE MAGNOLIA STORY CHIP AND JOANNA GAINES OCTOBER 18

Getting to Know You Everyone loves a good reveal after a home makeover. And now, reading “The Magnolia Story” will reveal everything you’ve ever wanted to know about Chip and Joanna Gaines, stars of the hit TV show “Fixer Upper.” It’s an autobiography that combines a good (Waco) Texas love story with a behind-the-scenes look at renovating homes. You’ve admired them on screen, and now you have the chance to get to know the couple, their family and their home in more detail.

The Clock is Ticking MAX STEEL IN THEATERS OCTOBER 21

A Boy and his Alien High school friendships have their ups and downs as it always takes time getting to know new people. For instance, it is always nice to know what planet your pals are from. Max Steel is a movie about two budding heroes—16-year-old Max McGrath (Ben Winchell) and his alien companion—who must combine their powers for good as they work together to uncover the mysteries of what is threatening their world. The film is inspired by one of Mattel’s bestselling toys, Max Steel.

Pursuing a criminal in the 21st century is hard, but throw in two time machines and time-traveling bureaucratic red tape, and you’ve got the makings of NBC’s new fall series “Timeless.” A mishmash team, comprised of a scientist, soldier and history professor, must travel through time to stop a rogue time traveler (Goran Višnjic of “ER”) from destroying America by changing its past. However, the team must halt his actions without changing the past themselves. Shawn Ryan (“The Shield”) and Eric Kripke (“Revolution”) co-write and executive produce the action-adventure series starring Abigail Spencer (“True Detective”), Matt Lanter (“90210”) and Malcolm Barrett (“The Hurt Locker”).

LAKE-VIEW PLAZA PROJECTED FOR COMPLETION AROUND CHRISTMAS Construction has begun on a 6,000-square-foot plaza overlooking Lake Grapevine, according to officials with Realty Capital, master developer of Lakeside DFW. Located at the southern tip of the Lakeside Boardwalk, the plaza will offer visitors views of Lake Grapevine and is expected to be a popular gathering spot for area residents. “The plaza will extend approximately 80 feet toward the lake from the boardwalk,” explained Rebecca Everitt, a development associate with Realty Capital. “The views of the water are beautiful from this spot.” The plaza’s three-level design features lots of open space, seating (benches plus tables and chairs) planters, and trees. The

decking of the plaza will be built from Douglas Fir from Oregon (the same wood used on the Boardwalk’s bridge, 240 yards to the north). Four planters will be filled with verbenas, loropetalums, pink muhlys, and crepe myrtles. The design calls for bench seating to be attached to the planters on the lakeview side. The existing trees on the site (four cedar elms and one ash) will be lit as will the steps between levels to make the plaza safe and enjoyable after sunset. To make the walk to the plaza more pleasant, a six-foot wide swath of sod will be laid and irrigated along the quarter-mile length of the boardwalk from Edgemere to the new plaza. Construction is expected to take approximately four months to complete. AGREEMENT FOR NEW TOWN HALL DESIGN APPROVED Town Council members have approved a Professional Services Agreement with the architectural firm Oxley Williams Tharp of Fort Worth for the design of a new 42,000-square-foot Town Hall. This approval came days after the Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone #1 (TIRZ) Board met and authorized the repayment of expenditures related to the development and construction of a new Town Hall in an amount of $10 million of TIRZ funds. These are property tax revenues generated within a defined area of the Town that are held for public infrastructure enhancements within the zone and are matched at a scaled percentage rate by Denton County.

FLOWER MOUND ENJOYS A LOW UNEMPLOYMENT RATE

POPULAR LOCAL FAMILY-OWNED RESTAURANT CLOSES ITS DOORS Twelve Stones garnered much attention in the short amount of time it was open. After opening in 2013, the restaurant amassed local nominations for best restaurant and often topped review site Yelp.com for its celebrated menu and service. But that all came to an abrupt end last month when the Burdick family decided to close the restaurant, leaving residents bewildered and disappointed to see one of their favorite restaurants leave the area. The Burdicks have cited family commitments as their reason for closing Twelve Stones, a pet project for Chef David Burdick and his wife, Lisa. David left the IT field to pursue his dream of owning his own restaurant after discovering he had cancer in 2006. We wish the Burdick family all the best in their next chapter.

According to the most recent data from Texas Workforce Commission, Texas has a 4.8 percent unemployment rate compared to the national average of 5.1 percent. Denton county has a 3.6 percent unemployment rate, with Flower Mound enjoying an even lower 3.3 percent rate. According to the town’s economic development department, our major employers include: CTDI (Communication Test Design, Inc.), Lewisville Independent School District, MI Windows & Doors, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Flower Mound, Stryker Communications and the Town of Flower Mound. STATEWIDE HIRING EVENT TO BE HELD FOR VETERANS The Texas Workforce Commission will hold its fifth annual Hiring Red, White and You! (HRWY) statewide job fair to take place on November 10. Locally, Dallas (Gilley’s Dallas) and Frisco (Dr Pepper Arena) will hold events. In cooperation with 28 Workforce Solutions partners, the Hiring Red, White and You! Job Fair connects Texas veterans and their spouses with Texas employers who value the experience, discipline and other exceptional qualities inherent with a military background. In the first four years, HRWY has connected more than 42,000 veterans with over 6,400 employers. It is estimated 927,000 veterans in Texas are eligible for work. By holding these Hiring Red, White and You! events across the state, Texas employers can more easily connect to this highly qualified group of service men and women in our area.

O Photo session pointers from the pros who know By Gina Tagliarino

18 • OCT 16

fmStyleMagazine.com

O

Oh, fall. How we love you with your football, fair food … and family photos? Well, maybe not that one so much. It’s that time of year again, where moms, dads, kids and even pets gather together to snap a few (fingers crossed) print-worthy memories to share with friends and family or to showcase on the annual holiday card. If you’ve always dreaded family photos, let us assure you: They don’t have to be stressful. Dare we say, they can even be fun. Make this the season to love your photo session with pointers from some of our area’s top photographers. You may even find yourself looking forward to your next family photo shoot. PICK A PERFECT PHOTOGRAPHER With today’s Instagram filters and budding amateur photographers garnering hundreds of likes from a single snap, you might wonder if you need a professional. If you want only a few snaps for social media, then probably not. But if you’re seeking a timeless treasure to share with family, display in your home and look back on fondly for years to come, the answer is undoubtedly yes. Local mom of four, Courtney Burns, decided to find a photographer for her family photos when she realized it was becoming impossible to get her children to all look in the same direction

as the camera, let alone with a photo-ready look on their faces. She chose BluDoor Studios to help her capture the precious moments in her family’s life and hasn’t looked back once over the past seven years. “They are creative and work to make our request a reality, no matter how zany it is,” Burns says. “I consistently get compliments on our Christmas cards because they are always unique and creative.” Professional photographers can also help bring out the best in an individual or family, especially if one might be averse to having his or her photo taken. For Kathy White, she found that entrusting her son’s portraits to LUCE Photography was one of the best decisions she could have made. “First, let me say that my son is 17 years old, shy and modest, and not excited about doing portraits at all,” White says. “Sarah Goucher [of

Dress for the Occasion One of the most pondered questions for any outing is, “What should I wear?” But when it comes to a family photo session, you’re not only deciding what you should wear for the day, but for years to come as your memories live on your walls or in frames throughout your home. While you certainly don’t want to look like a cloned family from a home catalog, there are a few tips to consider when selecting clothing. “We tell families to avoid bold patterns or large stripes, as these distract from the faces,” says photographer Mike Krause of BluDoor Studios. “We also prefer color. Sometimes families think it is easier to wear white or black, but coordinating colors and simple patterns make the most interesting photographs.” Photographer Thaddeus Harden advises that families dress up for photos, rather than fall into the temptation of wearing their normal daily attire. “In this day of everyday casual, taking the time to think about what you’re wearing and putting some finesse and style into your choices goes a long way toward creating an iconic image,” Harden says. “The more thought you put into your OCT 16 • 21

Hone in on When and Where Almost as important as what you’ll be wearing for your photos is when and where you’ll be taking them. As luck would have it, autumn is the perfect time to schedule them. “Cooler weather lends itself to more options, with the changing of the leaves, better clothing choices and the anticipation of the holidays,” Krause says. Goucher agrees that autumn is a great time for family photos, not only for weather conditions, but also to avoid rushing to squeeze in sessions for holiday cards and the other demands brought on by the season. Deciding where to take your photos can be a personal decision, many times based on a location that’s sentimental to your family. Don’t have anything in mind? Krause recommends Bob Jones Nature Center, the parks along Lake Grapevine and Colleyville’s parks, while Harden suggests a few less traditional routes, finding inspiration in cars, buses, streets, homes, kitchens, pools, barns and fields. “I’m always exploring, always open to new possibilities with every shoot,” Harden says. style, the better the outcome. Very few subjects really can stand out when they don’t take the time to add a little (or a lot) of flair to their style for a shoot.” He also suggests that families coordinate on a color, theme or location that works to set up their unique identity for the photo. Photographer Sarah Goucher of LUCE Photography agrees. “A good rule of thumb is to choose a neutral and a pop of color that will flow throughout the outfits to tie them together,” she says.

ideal when including young children in photos, who may require feedings, naps or whose overall mood of the moment may dictate the personality of the photo. Capture Picture-Perfect Moments Life isn’t always perfect, so why should your photos be? Remember that as much as you want your toddler to smile for the camera, it might not be in the cards. Which is not only okay—but can actually result in unforgettable moments. “The biggest mistake clients make is trying to be perfect and making it stressful for the family,” Krause says. “Let the kids be kids!” Goucher agrees that overthinking the session and worrying too much about the outcome can backfire. “We know children are unpredictable and many of the best photos come from the unplanned spontaneous moments,” she says. But for all the spontaneity, photographers still recommend planning ahead to avoid stress. Know where you are going, what you’re going to wear and when everyone needs to be there. Above all else, when it comes to getting your family together for a photo session, a sense of humor and a relaxed state of mind is key. “Sometimes the best images aren’t the ones where everyone is looking at the camera and smiling,” Krause says. “Showing how a family interacts and laughs are some of the greatest memories we capture.” A day spent laughing with your family for the sake of creating lasting memories? That’s something to smile about. fmStyleMagazine.com

SENATOR JANE NELSON ADVOCATES FOR NEIGHBORS DURING LONG-TERM SERVICE TO STATE By Pamela Hammonds

fm STYLE Magazine

Years ago, Texas State Senator Jane Nelson’s fellow constituents would ask her, Where is Flower Mound? Not anymore! “Everyone knows about Flower Mound,” she says. “It’s an honor to represent this community because this is my home. I talk to Flower Mound residents every day, I know their priorities and I know they expect me to fight for them. That makes it easier to cast my votes.” Nelson moved to the area with her husband, Mike, in 1975, and Flower Mound in 1990. Fast-forward nearly three decades, and the former teacher has experienced firsthand our town’s growth and development. Today the Nelson’s family boasts five children and nine grandchildren. “There is no better community in which to live, work and raise a family,” Nelson says. In fact, she and Mike were early purchasers of The Towers at Lakeside, where they will make their new home upon completion. OCT 16 • 23

Senator Jane Nelson presents Lakeside developer Richard Myers a Texas State Flag at The Lakeside Tower groundbreaking ceremony.

She and Mike ran a precision aircraft component manufacturing company they started out of their garage, and she taught sixth grade before becoming a full-time mom/volunteer. When Nelson entered public office, their young brood ranged in age from two to nine. But with Mike’s support and a network of helpful family and friends, Nelson took up the challenge and entered politics. “As the kids got older, they just thought it was normal for moms to do this,” she says, “which I think is healthy because I would love to see more moms in elected office.”

Senate, and I’m particularly proud that they are not just serving, they are making an impact.” Nelson considers it an honor to be the first woman in Texas history to chair a budget-writing committee—a role she was appointed to not because of her gender but due to her qualifications. As she drafted the $210 billion budget for the state, she parlayed years of experience managing her family’s business ledger and their household budget. “I scrutinize every penny to ensure we are making the best possible use of our funds,” Nelson says, “our needs are being met, we pay our bills and are prepared for an emergency.”

ENTREPRENEURIAL BEGINNINGS

A LEGACY OF SERVICE

Nelson’s road from education to legislation was paved with hours of community service. When the State Board of Education became an elected office, Nelson was encouraged to run, making the most of her contacts fostered through years of PTA involvement, community volunteer work and the Republican Women’s Club. “They knew I had a business background and that I was a former teacher, an adult literacy volunteer, and a mom who was very involved in our children’s education,” Nelson says. Nelson is only the 10th woman ever elected to the Texas Senate and the third Republican female. “When I started, the lieutenant governor thought health was primarily a women’s issue, so he appointed me vice chair of the Health and Human Services Committee,” Nelson recalls. “That turned out to be a great appointment because later, I would become that committee’s longest-serving chair. Now, we have seven women in the Senate. I love seeing more women in the 24 • OCT 16

Over the next few months, Nelson will remain in Austin, reviewing the monetary requests of 171 state agencies and asking tough questions to better craft a budget that is conservative and responsible, one that meets the growing needs of our state. In addition to having passed a previous budget by a 30-1 vote, her development of the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas tops her list of greatest legislative accomplishments. “Cancer touches all of us, and CPRIT is bringing the best and brightest researchers to Texas in search of cures for this terrible disease,” Nelson says. “It also funds cancer prevention efforts. I really hope that one day, from my rocking chair, I can tell my grandkids that their grandmother created an entity that found cures for cancer.” Her other hope is for every child in Texas to grow up in a supportive environment, with a great education and a champion in their corner—someone to encourage them, help with homework, teach right from wrong, get them to practice healthy lifestyle habits and mold them into responsible citizens. “If we could make that happen, we would solve the vast majority of our challenges,” Nelson says. Something tells us that Nelson will find a way to make that happen, too. fmStyleMagazine.com

BUILDING HOPE KIM HINKLE REVEALS THE TRAGIC AND INSPIRING STORY BEHIND DENTON COUNTY’S FIRST SHELTER FOR TEENS

Once a successful business developer, Kim Hinkle left her corporate career to co-found Journey to Dream with her friend Kari Rusco 12 years ago. Both women experienced firsthand how substance abuse can dismantle a family and the permeating effects of addiction. Through JTD, they crafted a lifeline for area teens by presenting programs to help students cope with issues such as addiction in the home, depression, suicidal thoughts and self-harm. Hinkle parlayed lessons learned at the Betty Ford Children’s Program she attended with her daughters as well as training from other organizations to create and implement the programs, utilizing teens’ peers as leaders. Tragically, one of JTD’s young trainers succumbed to suicide in 2012, and thus Kyle’s Place, an emergency homeless shelter for teens, opens this month in Kyle’s honor. The 5,100-square-foot shelter will house 16 kids. Currently in Denton County, over 400 youth are homeless on any given night. Q: The number of unaccompanied youth in our area is staggering. How did you find out about this little-known plight? A: We became aware of a homeless issue among teens through our supervisor at LISD, who asked us to start a model of our program after seeing what we were doing at Hebron High School, the first school we worked with. She told me that nearly every day, a kiddo would come to her office who was sofa-surfing—going from house-to-house— or sleeping in their car or in a park. First United Methodist Church in Lewisville has a drop-in center called YOTO—Youth on their Own—and we spent some time with the executive director to learn more about the issue. We realized pretty quickly that youth homelessness is a nationwide epidemic. Q: How do kids become homeless? A: It happens in a variety of ways. Some kids are too old to stay in family shelters. Some flee an abusive family situation. Families in chronic poverty launch kids out on their own. One boy whose dad and brothers were in a gang that he wouldn’t join was kicked out of his home. Some kids are pushed out because they identify as gay or lesbian. It varies from campus to campus, kid to kid. Q: How will you determine who lives at Kyle’s Place? A: We have an intake process for kids 14 to 18 years old, ideally, which isn’t to say we wouldn’t take a 12-year-old if the situation presented itself. They’ll meet with a case manager for an interview, and we’ll screen for substance abuse or violent behavior. If they have issues beyond our means, we can refer them to a place better equipped to serve them. We will work directly with Child Protective Services, and the teens will have a case manager assigned to them who works for us.

Q: Is there a limit to how long teens can stay? A: Kyle’s Place is designated emergency housing, and there’s a 90-day stay limit as opposed to a transitional living facility. We really hope within a year or two we will have [transitional living] options available. Our end goal is family reunification. We can also place homeless kids in host homes, similar to foster care, if they can’t return to family after 90 days. We may eventually have to form our own child placement agency. Q: What services are provided for teens at Kyle’s Place? A: Case management is the biggest piece, and we’ll formulate an exit strategy to try to get them back in their family environment. Family counseling is available if the family is willing. We have a partnership with Ranch Hand Rescue for animal therapy. We’ve aligned with local churches to come in and bring a meal and watch a movie or play games with our kiddos. We will also coordinate outreach programs for our kids to give back through nonprofits or community events. Q: What happens when you run out of space at Kyle’s Place? A: There are not a lot of alternatives, sadly. There is Promise House in Dallas, City House in Plano and Christ Haven in Keller. Q: How can our community assist?

Q: Who will stay at Kyle’s Place to mentor and supervise the kids?

A: We have needs for teen sponsorship. It costs $25 a day for us to house a kid. We plan to stock a resource closet with new clothing, shoes, school supplies and toiletries. We will also need volunteers to chaperone activities and provide meals, so we will launch a page on our website after we open so people can see how they can help. We’d love for people to get involved and are so grateful to the community for wrapping their arms around us.

A: We have a three-shift supervisor model, with two people working eight-hour shifts so someone is always up and alert at all times.

n a C-suite world seemingly dominated by men, a woman may be tempted to blend in as she climbs the corporate ladder. While the meeting of minds may take place on an equal playing field, it doesn’t mean women in business must give up what suits them—right down to the interior design of their office. For women who want to showcase their personal style beyond their wardrobe, look no further than the Sydney Desk from Z Gallerie. This functional piece blends the shape and form of a classic bureau with a modern take on timeless design elements. In a home office or otherwise, the Sydney sets itself apart from other desks. This bureau may not have traditional oak legs to stand on, but the gold-plated, polished stainless steel base is exceptionally durable. Architecturally, the base forms a pattern reminiscent of ancient Grecian art—as do the fixtures and faceplates of the top-panel drawers. The openness of the desk’s foundation allows light to pass under and around the frame, giving it an airy feeling. Its presence within a room immediately brightens the rest of the space. Just as luxurious feeling and exquisite looking, the desk’s wooden top panel with hardwood veneer and white high-gloss finish serves as a blank canvas. On this bureau, you just may write the next Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, draft the business plan for your latest tech venture or manage your

family’s budget and calendar. Oh, and adding just the right tape dispenser, vase and picture frame is another way you can personalize your Sydney. Z Gallerie has not only created an elegant masterpiece for your space but has paid attention to the functionality of the Sydney Desk. It’s the right size for most rooms: 48 inches wide, 24 inches deep and 30.5 inches tall. Three drawers within the desk’s top panel each measure 16.5 inches deep. Also worth noting—since assembly is required—the weight of the base and top panel, 36.5 lbs. and 79.5 lbs., respectively, which makes it fairly substantial given its size. Eight plastic glides on the bottom of the base protect flooring so, when it’s fully assembled, the desk will look great here … or there … or over here. Too often, when searching for office furniture, it’s easy to settle for the customary wooden desk. While traditional pieces may very well suit your style, Z Gallerie challenges you to think outside the box made up of your office’s four walls. Introducing something unexpected and a little bit sassy to your space may inspire your work or simply make a statement. Either way, the Sydney Desk serves its purpose well.

on’t get thrown off by the“Mexican” in Mexican Sugar Cocina Y Cantina. The Plano eatery, nuzzled in the Shops at Legacy, has a lot to show for itself as it serves up Latin-inspired fare worth the drive. With more than 600 online reviews and stellar ratings, you know this place must be worth a visit. “The experience of coming to Mexican Sugar is like being transported to your favorite vacation getaway,” says Alexandra Gastelum, the restaurant’s manager. “When it comes to our Latin music and fresh aqua fresca, the experience of Mexican Sugar is not quite like other Mexican restaurants.” We wholeheartedly agree. The classic Latin restaurant offers guests an extensive tequila and mezcal collection, as well as to-die-for craft cocktails blended with high-quality handpressed juice. “Everything we make is from

scratch,” says Gastelum. Simply put: Mexican Sugar’s traditional ingredients and culturecentered methods triumph other eateries in the area. When you enter the Latin-inspired restaurant, you’re immediately welcomed by a beautiful, romantic décor that sets the scene for the perfect date night. What seems like hundreds of candles are lit behind the seating, taking you to another place in time. The dreamy ambiance will be sure to make your dining experience one to remember. For brunch, start with some addictive queso mole, complete with chorizo, mole negro, pico de gallo and queso fresco. It’ll be one of the best quesos you’ll find in the DFW area. Feeling adventurous? Try the refreshing mango napa chicken salad, heavenly vanilla cinnamon pancakes or pan-roasted snapper, a customer favorite.

Want an equally amazing drink to go with your masterfully executed meal? Mexican Sugar has a make-your-own mimosa bar that includes a glass of champagne and fruit juice of your choice. “There is something about coming to brunch on a relaxing Sunday morning and getting the Benedictos Rancheros with a mimosa,” says Gastelum. Other beverage selections include classic margaritas, sangrias and an assortment of beers and wines. Looking for a tasty nonalcoholic drink? Try the horchata, a sweet, rice-based milk infused with cinnamon that you will happily enjoy ’til the last drop. On Fridays and Saturdays, visit the bar for happy hour from 10 p.m. to midnight and enjoy refreshing $4 margaritas. Because the Plano restaurant is so popular, reviewers suggest dining during lunchtime, but that doesn’t mean the wait isn’t worth it. The shrimp/crab/avocado cocktail makes a great appetizer to kick off a belly-filling midday meal. Lunch entrees include the grilled romaine and skirt steak salad; brisket, pork and chicken tacos; and irresistible lump crab enchiladas, among others. For those feeling extra hungry, order a side of the cilantro fingerling potatoes or Latin corn succotash to complement an already lavish lunch. No matter what you’re craving, we’re certain you’ll find a plate that’ll blow your taste buds away within the first couple of bites. And we can’t forget everyone’s favorite meal of the day: dinner. For a starter, you can’t go wrong with the grilled pardon peppers and squash blossom quesadilla. The smoked salt and citrus glaze on the peppers amp up the flavor, and the spiced mushrooms, salsa and grilled onions in the quesadilla will hold you over as you anticipate the palate-pleasing grub to come. If you’re in the mood for tacos, feast your eyes on the spicy habanero chicken tacos and the carne asada, complete with wood-grilled skirt steak, pickled radish and other lip-smacking additions. Craving enchiladas? Order the roasted chicken enchiladas, filled with manchego cheese, queso blanco and heirloom black beans. For those with a robust appetite, Mexican Sugar offers Chilean sea bass, pork chops, grilled salmon and even duck breast mole accompanied by sweet Latin potato hash, chimichurri, herb oil and toasted sesame seeds. Couple your ingredientloaded entre with street-style elote or hearts of palm citrus salad and you’ll be sure to have a dinner you won’t find anywhere else. If you’re one of the few who saves room for dessert after eating such tantalizingly good food, complete your meal with some unbelievably moist chocolate avocado cake, featuring cinnamon meringue, chocolate avocado mousse and savory ganache. Pair that with some Mexican hot chocolate and you will never want to eat again (in a good way). In the Lone Star State, there is definitely no shortage of Mexican restaurants. However, for those tired of the same old Tex-Mex, Mexican Sugar offers a vast variety of brunch, lunch and dinner fare that stays true to the eatery’s Latin-inspired roots. Mexican Sugar is truly a hidden gem that begs to be noticed among an array of expected Mexican establishments. Why settle for less when you can get the whole enchilada?

A Latte to Love TRIO Craft Coffee serves up deliciousness one cup at a time A great cup of coffee—or tea or cappuccino—is delicious any time of year, but cooler temps make you hanker for a hot mug you can wrap chilly hands around and lean over the aromatic warmth wafting toward your face. Carlos and Susan Palacio, owners of TRIO Craft Coffee, share a passion for java and people, which led to their pursuit of a local specialty coffee shop. After marrying in 2012, the Palacios determined their mission: to serve their community and deliver incredible coffee. “We wanted to take something ‘common’ and ubiquitous and unearth the best possible results,” Susan says. The couple met in Guatemala, where Susan was serving as a missionary and Carlos was on a short-term trip. A native of Mexico City, Carlos lived there and in Columbia before moving to the United States over 20 years ago. “His heritage plays a large role in our love for and desire to serve excellent coffee,” Susan says. “He remembers drinking coffee even as a little kid.” Susan has always been a coffee lover, too, but her appreciation for the craft has evolved exponentially over the past five years. Together

they have unearthed the best possible product the coffee bean can deliver. TRIO Craft Coffee takes its name from a few sources—master coffee tasters take three sips when assessing flavor, and local coffee houses represent that third gathering spot in addition to work and home. For the coffee at TRIO to be exceptional every time, three elements come into play: water, beans and barista. The result? High-quality coffee and an aspiration to elevate coffee brewing to a culinary art and not just a commodity. Oak Cliff Coffee Roasters and Novel Coffee Roasters provide the beans behind the brews. “We have purposefully partnered with local roasters who are doing an excellent job and consistently providing the highest quality beans,” Susan says. “Each season we infuse unique ingredients with coffee and tea to provide our customers with something different from our standard menu.” This fall, expect Autumn Spice Latte, Mexican Salted Caramel Cappuccino and other seasonal delights. While good coffee and teas are certainly worth the drive to TRIO, the mouthwatering pastries, delivered fresh from Zenzero Bakery in nearby Coppell, and gluten-free offerings from Pinch of Salt Pastries, plus hot sandwiches will keep you coming back for more. Consider TRIO a one-stop coffee shop for flavorful pick-me-ups and tasty options to warm you from the inside out.

Why Did the Restaurateur Cross the Road? Because a more awesome venue was on the other side!

VERF’S GRILL & TAVERN 2221 Justin Road, Suite 101 Flower Mound

When Jim Verfurth was a kid, his buddies called him and his two brothers Verf for short. And as some nicknames go, this one stuck. So when Verfurth opened a new restaurant last year, he decided Verf’s Grill and Tavern sounded fun and made his venture even more personal. Verfurth is no stranger to the biz. He started out washing dishes as a teen, learned the craft at the Culinary Institute of America in New York and worked in other restaurants before founding The Village Grill in Highland Village in 1997. After 18 years, he decided to close it. The building had seen better days, visibility from the street was poor and right across the road stood a bigger, newer building with a fresh opportunity to try a new concept. “I wanted to take more creative liberties with food with higher quality ingredients and offer a full-service bar,” Verfurth says. It was a risk that has paid off handsomely. “We’ve doubled our first year’s projections.” Fortunately, some of Verfurth’s loyal employees from The Village Grill crossed the road to Verf’s as well, including Chef Florencio, who inventively rose to the occasion to serve a more refined clientele. Along with menu favorites such as thick-cut salmon steak with garlic butter and grilled lamb chops with rosemary demi-glace, every day Chef Florencio features two specials, twice a day. “Our customers love our menu items but really look forward to seeing what Chef Flor has in store each day,” Verfurth says. When you dine at Verf’s, expect a fine-dining experience with prices that allow you to return every week. Some of the standouts on the menu include USDA prime certified Angus beef and freshly delivered seafood. And be sure to sample The Bread—artesian bread filled with mozzarella, green onions, poppy seeds and roasted garlic butter that’s baked into crispy, gooey goodness. For a lighter delight, order a salad featuring pecan-crusted salmon or tortilla-crusted chicken. Whatever you order, be sure to finish your dining experience with something sweet. May we suggest the Drunken Donut? It’s served hot, dusted with cinnamon and sugar and filled with Frangelico cream. Are your taste buds tingling yet? Next on Verfurth’s agenda is opening a gastro-pub in the Shops at Highland Village: Shoal Creek Tavern. “The tavern will have a pub theme with an emphasis on the food,” Verfurth says. “We hope to be open by the holidays.” We have a sneaking suspicion Verfurth’s newest venture will be a smashing success, too.

Haunted Hotspots INVESTIGATE FIVE OF THE COUNTRY’S SPOOKIEST SITES

H

istory repeats itself—most often when ghosts just can’t move on. The following destinations treat visitors to a uniquely haunted experience, but that’s not all they offer guests. Our intent is not to scare you away from these hauntings, but send you on a spirited adventure throughout the United States.

Moon River Brewing Company Savannah, Georgia wordpress.MoonRiverBrewing.com Not only is Savannah one of the oldest cities in Georgia, it’s also one of the original 13 colonies. Historical sites abound, each one chronicling the people, places and events of the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. It’s easy to point out the haunted historical locations of last stands and “surrenders gone bad” in the city, but much more enticing is an oldfashioned ghost story involving a haunted brewery. Moon River Brewing Company is housed in one of Savannah’s oldest buildings. From hotel and post office to bank and bar, the building has

seen its share of visitors since it first opened in 1821. Many a mishap, argument and gunfight has unfolded on the grounds in the past 200 years. And as the stories go, these malicious events have led to ghosts making their presence known in the most obnoxious of ways—such as “pushing” around the visitors. But don’t let this deter you from visiting. While you are there checking out the spirits, enjoy one of Moon River’s award-winning brews.

The Driskill Hotel Austin, Texas DriskillHotel.com The Driskill Hotel in Austin is a Lone Star landmark. Cattle baron Colonel Jesse Driskill built his eponymous hotel in 1886, and today, the building is designated as the oldest operating hotel in Texas. Playing host to inaugural balls for many Texas governors and lavish events for international dignitaries over the years, the hotel has accommodated grand parties—and party guests. Spend a night at the Driskill Hotel and you just might hear the sound of big band music revelers of years past in the lobby. Hotel guests have reported seeing partygoers dressed in elaborate ball gowns and tuxedos. This may not seem too spooky—until they learn there are no social events taking place on the property that night.

BOARDINGPASS road trip But the ghosts are friendly, and the only haunting to be had by the spirits is a little light flickering and making their appearance known on occasion throughout the hotel. Who knows? They might even suggest you try a fresh house-made pastry from the hotel’s 1886 Cafe and Bakery.

of the family’s lavish parties, a fire broke out and quickly spread. While the fire was being put out, the firemen and party guests heard screaming coming from the basement of the home. When they made their way to the lower level and opened the door, to their horrid surprise, they discovered servants and slaves shackled to the walls who had apparently been used in various science experiments. We will leave the gruesome details to the tour guide. Of course, the mansion has been haunted since the disaster, and over the years tales of unexplained phenomenon have riddled the history of 1140 Royal Street—the LaLaurie Mansion.

In 1974, the Accuardi family opened Old Town Pizza in Portland, Oregon. It quickly became a legendary landmark. And thanks to a “working woman” named Nina who lived more than 100 years ago, it is also a haunted landmark. As the legend goes, Nina met her demise after being pushed down an elevator shaft in Portland’s Merchant Hotel. Although it was decades later that the defunct hotel would become a pizzeria, Nina seems to have stuck around since her murder to roam the restaurant. Present-day patrons of Old Town Pizza catch a glimpse of Nina’s ghost now and then or catch the scent of her perfume as she passes by. Stop in and grab a slice and a beer—Old Town Pizza is also a brewpub now—but don’t be surprised if an unexpected guest joins you for happy hour. We hear she smells divine.

Fort Mifflin Philadelphia, Pennsylvania FortMifflin.us While it may have been the Brits who commissioned Fort Mifflin— as it is now named—it became an American fortification in 1777. Over the next 240 years, Fort Mifflin would experience the Civil War and both World Wars, giving the resident ghosts plenty of time to perfect their hauntings. While a variety of educational and history buff-worthy guided tours are offered at Fort Mifflin, only the paranormal tour will engage your spirit senses. A popular haunted spot on the guided tour is the location of the screaming woman. In the early 1860s, a woman named Elizabeth Bunker lived with her husband Warrant Officer Gunner Benjamin Bunker in the officer’s quarters. She suffered from gastritis, and the pain was so intense she would scream. Back then, her wailing and shrieking could be heard throughout the fort. And, as any good ghost story goes, her screams can still be heard centuries later.

The LaLaurie Mansion New Orleans, Louisiana HauntedHistoryTours.com The Crescent City may be known for voodoo and vampires, but there are plenty of ghosts who call New Orleans’ French Quarter home. It seems a haunted mansion sits on every corner. But one ghastly tale stands out above the rest, according to Haunted History Tours, a company that prides itself on being the experts when it comes to the history—and haunting—of New Orleans. As the story goes, the well-to-do LaLaurie family lived in a mansion on Royal Street in the Quarter during the early 1800s. During one

The Art of Being

Neighborly Making social connections that matter

M

odern life, with all its exciting technological progress, presents some drawbacks, too. More time is spent surfing the web and binge watching TV shows and less time interacting with neighbors and engaging in the community. Social networking has replaced social gatherings. While that backyard oasis you’ve invested in might be great for family get-togethers, staying cloistered away also contributes to a disconnectedness. Instead of relaxing on the front porch and chatting with neighbors, you’re surrounded by a tall fence and isolated from humanity. We have entered an era earmarked by a decline of social capital—the shared experiences, webs of relationships and norms of reciprocity that underpin the smooth functioning of society, warns Joe Cortright in his report, “Less in Common.” Challenge yourself to make a conscious effort to buck this trend. As it turns out, social engagement and being community-focused benefits us all. Communally oriented people report greater self-esteem, more general life satisfaction, greater relationship satisfaction and more love for humanity, according to a study cited by the “Journal of Social and Personal Relationships.” Hospitable acts, such as preparing food for a neighbor after a birth or offering to run small errands, create a huge surplus in your social capital account. Doesn’t being kind to others just feel like the right thing to do? A Local Neighborhood Stays Connected Flower Mound is a community with a host of wonderful qualities that make it a uniquely inviting place to live. Many close-knit neighborhoods embrace a return to an era when people socialized frequently and looked out for one another. A group of residents on a quiet cul-desac in The Villages of Northshore has stayed connected for decades. These neighbors have actively fostered a family-friendly atmosphere of inclusiveness and genuine camaraderie.

OCT 16 • 57

It began 20 years ago when photographer Sue Decker gathered the neighborhood children for pictures on Halloween before they went trick-or-treating. The kids not only got a chance to become better acquainted, but so did the parents. Over the years, Halloween on the cul-de-sac has become a fun event for residents of all ages. Everyone participates in a chili cook-off and then gets together to sample the results. The party now often includes relatives of the residents—grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins—who stop by to join in the festivities. Decker says everyone benefits from having close ties with their neighbors. Plus, it instills a greater sense of trust and overall peace of mind. “You can go on vacation knowing your home is being watched over,” she says. “When your kids are playing down the street or when they first start driving, you know a few extra sets of eyes are watching to help keep them out of harm’s way.”

58 • OCT 16

Of course, the neighborhood has evolved over time. Children have left for college, people have moved away and new residents have moved in, but the annual Halloween festivities are still going strong. “After the kids leave home, we’ve found a way of helping them stay connected to their childhood memories and to a common thread of neighborliness,” Decker says. “We include their images in the Halloween group pictures by printing them out and holding them up on a stick.” What a great way to show the current group of neighborhood kids that they are not forgotten once they move out. Foster a Spirit of Neighborliness Perhaps what folks who experience a great neighborhood cherish most is how lasting memories and lifelong impressions are created. Once you’ve lived in such a place, you can’t help but want to recreate it wherever you go and pay it forward. It doesn’t take much effort to kick-start activities that promote relationship building and connectivity among neighbors. While there may be some who choose not to participate, most people welcome an opportunity to be social. So go ahead, break out, be a catalyst and then enjoy the ripple effect. It can be as simple as making it a point to talk to your neighbors versus the obligatory wave as you dash to your mailbox or drive into your garage. A neighborhood is more than a place to hang your hat. Be the neighbor you wish lived next door. Building genuine relationships with your neighbors makes the world a better place—one cul-de-sac at a time. fmStyleMagazine.com

RANDOM ACTS OF

NEIGHBORLINESS 1. Greet newcomers with a bottle of champagne, a box of cookies or treats, your contact info and a list of favorite places around town. 2. Host an annual New Year’s Eve bash. You’ll be surprised how many people will be thrilled to attend a celebration that doesn’t involve driving or dealing with throngs of revelers in a public place. 3. Organize a neighborhood scavenger hunt for adults. You can do this for children, too, but remember, not everyone is a parent or has children living with them. 4. Set up a swap. It can be anything swappable—surplus garden veggies and herbs, flower cuttings, cookies and treats, seasonal candles, kids’ toys, craft supplies, etc. 5. If you have a community pool, meet there to socialize and share the responsibility of watching out for the children. Plus no one has to clean up their house or yard afterward.

RECLAIM YOUR FRONT YARD Outdoor home design trends focus on creating a backyard oasis—a private escape from the world. But what about your front yard, where you can socialize with neighbors and feel like part of the community? Houzz.com shows you how to take advantage of your front porch or stoop. A cozy seating area with accessories helps create the feel of an outdoor room. Add lights, potted plants, an outdoor rug and throws when the weather gets cooler. Make it easy to invite neighbors up for a chat. If your porch isn’t big enough, consider creating a front yard seating area. Add a quaint French-style gravel or mulch area surrounded by soft plantings. Place a couple of Adirondack chairs or a bistro table and chairs. Add a tree swing for the kids, a small outdoor fire pit or a simple entrance archway and invite the neighbors to come sit a spell!

6. Organize a block party or plan a barbecue at a nearby park. Make it a potluck where everyone contributes a dish, an ice cream social, or Hawaiian pupu party with a variety of hors d’oeuvres. Include a fun theme or idea such as handing out glow sticks to the kids as the sun goes down. Don’t forget nametags. It might sound geeky, but nametags put new neighbors on a level playing field with everyone else. Make them fun by attaching a tag to a plastic lei or a string of party beads. 7. Assemble a walking group, book club or neighborhood watch. 8. Create a moveable feast supper club, where different courses are enjoyed in different homes.

FLOWER MOUND GOLFER MAKES OLYMPIC HISTORY “I never thought I would be standing here giving an interview about being in the Olympics. It’s just a dream come true.”

T

The 2016 Rio Olympic Games are officially behind us, but we are still riding the high and are proud to feature local Olympian Gerina Piller, member of the 2016 Women’s Olympic Golf Team, who currently plays for the Ladies Professional Golf Association and ranks 15th on its Official Money List. Piller, 31, became a member of the United States Women’s Golf Team when she tied for eighth place at the United States Women’s Open in July. In addition to the recent excitement of joining Team USA, Piller was ecstatic to get the opportunity to play because women’s golf was returning as an Olympic sport after an absence of more than 100 years. “When golf came back in the Olympics, I thought, ‘Wow, here is my chance to go to the Olympics,’” Piller said in an interview with USA Today. “I never thought I would be standing here giving an interview about being in the Olympics. It’s just a dream come true.” Piller went into her final round in Rio in second place, but when she shot a final round of 74, her rank dramatically dropped to an 11th place finish. She told The New York Times, “I think I’ll cherish this week forever. Just taking a lot of positives away from it.” During the emotional interview, PIller added, “I didn’t even think I had a chance to be here, so to come and to be in contention is all I can really ask for. Just going to learn from it and move on.” Piller began her professional career in 2007 after playing golf for the University of Texas El Paso. Earlier this year, she and her husband, Martin Piller, who is a member of the Professional Golf Association’s tour, moved to Flower Mound from Fort Worth. The two remain committed to their careers, but equally look forward to downtime in between managing their busy schedules. See more photos from Piller’s Olympic experience, as well as her jaunts around The Town of Flower Mound, by following her Twitter feed @GerinaPiller and/or her Instagram account @GerinaMPiller.
