Summer is for Bomb Pops Summertime is in full swing. This is the season of sun-drenched days, flip-flops and Bomb Pops. Don’t just dip your toe … cannonball right in! I love summer for all the possibility it brings: the adventures to experience, books to read, celebrations to enjoy. Memories are just waiting to be made. Growing up, one of my favorite sounds of summer was the glorious melody of the ice cream truck. At the first hint of that tinkling music, the neighborhood kids and I would dash over and stare at all the frozen novelties beaming back at us. Then we’d make the crucial decision: Bomb Pop or Choco Taco? (It was almost always the Bomb Pop.) It’s fun to reminisce on summers past. And then it’s fun to dive on in and create some new memories. We give you 22 ideas (23 if you include coloring our cover) in our feature on page 24 to bring some delight to your summer. We didn’t want to serve up a list of the usual sights and activities; we wanted to light a sparkler under your swim trunks. Our hope is that you might tear out the pages and stick them on your fridge as inspiration. From our roundup, I’m most excited to catch a summer sunset on horseback or go stand-up paddle boarding on the Trinity River. But I’m also happy to unwind outdoors with a good book or magazine, just like 50 percent of you, according to our online poll. Reading outside is one of summertime’s simple pleasures. But should you want to enjoy a good story in the comfort of the AC, just head to Southlake Public Library—and bring your kids. There, Elizabeth Beamon (Ms. Elizabeth, as she’s affectionately known) entertains children with her interactive story times, complete with puppets and music. If you’ve taken your family, you already know: Nobody tells a story like Ms. Elizabeth. And there’s no time quite like the summer to escape the heat for a while and get lost in a timeless tale. In the midst of all your summertime adventures, don’t forget to carve out time to relax. And if that means kicking back in a hammock with this issue and a Bomb Pop, so much the better.

Happy reading,

Audrey Sellers | Editor Audrey@SouthlakeStyle.com

SOME TOWN SOMEWHERE KENNY CHESNEY JULY 8

Tell It Like It Is Kenny Chesney’s No Shoes Nation (his official fan club) will recognize Chesney’s straight to the point, honest lyrics in his latest album “Some Town Somewhere.” When the first single from the album, “Noise,” hit the airwaves in May, it became Chesney’s most downloaded song ever. The single broached the topic of our need to be hyper-connected all the time. Just like “Noise,” the rest of the album’s tracks—in Chesney’s signature style—tell stories of “seizing life in all its forms.”

HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD J.K. ROWLING, JACK THORNE, JOHN TIFFANY JULY 31

Life Is a Stage What ever happened to grownup Harry Potter? You won’t find answers on the big screen. But, in the stage production of the eighth story in the young wizard’s series, we find adult Harry as an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and a father of three. In “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child – Parts I & II (Special Rehearsal Edition): The Official Script Book of the Original West End Production,” you’ll find answers to all your burning future Harry Potter questions. The play is based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany.

VICE PRINCIPALS JASON BOURNE

IN THEATERS JULY 29

Back in Action

Danny McBride (voice of Bomb in the “Angry Birds” movie) and Walton Goggins (“The Hateful Eight”) star as two high school vice principals in a new HBO series. This dark comedy follows the constant power struggle between McBride and Goggins as they each have aspirations of shaking their vice titles and becoming the principal. HBO has provided minimal details about the plot, other than a trailer—which confirms the basic summary on its website. McBride is also co-creator of the television series.

The next chapter of the Bourne franchise finds Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) drawn out of the shadows he slipped into at the close of “The Bourne Legacy.” Once again, the CIA’s most deadly operative must find a way to stave off an assassin (Vincent Cassel, “Black Swan”) and probably save the world. Julia Stiles will reprise her role as Nicky Parsons. As of press time, these are the only clues given as to what will transpire in the Paul Greengrassdirected Universal Pictures’ production.

SUNNY SKIES BROUGHT CROWDS, DOLLARS TO 2016 ART IN THE SQUARE This year’s Art in the Square went down in the books as an artful success. More than 800 volunteers, 96 sponsors and a steady stream of community supporters made it a memorable event for 30 beneficiaries and all who attended. Net proceeds are expected to surpass last year’s net revenue of $190,000. While rain dampened the event last year, this year brought three beautiful days for patrons to experience art, food and all the fun the event had to offer. Ticket tents were busy, selling more than 280,000 tickets. And when it comes to the centerpiece of the event—the art—this year brought some incredible artists. Awards of Distinction were given to Nobe Babayan (metal), Marvin Blackmore (ceramics), Cindy Capehart (oil), Gary Streter (oil) and Michael Woodard (photography). Gregory Strachov of Floral City, Florida, was named the 2016 People’s Choice Winner.

ENJOY DINOSAURS, PREHISTORIC FUN IN GRAPEVINE Do your kids love history and fun-filled activities? If so, the Grapevine Convention and Visitors Bureau has you covered. Every Saturday through July 30, children and families can torch their own glass dinosaur medallion or dig for hidden treasures in historic downtown Grapevine as part of the city’s “Be the Dinosaur” museum exhibits. The Dino Medallion Help-Create Experience, hosted by Vetro Glassblowing Studio & Fine Art Gallery, welcomes attendees of all ages. The family-friendly event was inspired by the discovery of dinosaur tracks around Lake Grapevine, a beloved destination for community gatherings year-round. Or, let your kids get hands-on at one of the city’s Dino Digs, which are held Tuesday through Saturday through September 18.

DRAGONS EXCELLED AT TEXAS TOP 99 LACROSSE SHOWCASE The annual Texas Top 99 (a.k.a. T99) lacrosse showcase in Dallas kicked off a busy summer of events for travel teams and players. Nearly 100 coaches representing 29 Division 1, 10 D2, 43 D3 and 15 MCLA schools descended upon the Metroplex earlier this summer to observe the players selected for the event. Several players, who all grew up playing lacrosse as Dragons in the Southlake Carroll Lacrosse Association (SCLA), earned All-Star honors. Lead by the strong defense effort of Ryan Thompson, a Varsity Junior defenseman and a two-goal, two-assist game of A.J. Van den Dyssel, a Varsity Senior midfielder, the 2017/2018 White All-Star team prevailed in the final. The 2019/2020 bracket saw several other SCLA youth program alums earn All-Star designation including Harry Blake, who contributed last year as a Varsity Freshman Attack, Mitchell Gruenewald, a defenseman/long-stick middie, and rising freshman Drew Wasserman. Wasserman’s older brother Casey, a past T99 participant and attackman for the Varsity Dragons, recently announced his college commitment to play for Division 1 Towson. LEARN TO MIX AND CROSSFADE LIKE THE BEST AT DJ CAMP This summer, kids can learn how to make the beat drop. That is, if they snag a spot at the first-ever DJ Camp at The Marq. Dan Quinn of Southlake’s Dan Quinn Band is offering a four-day camp that runs from July 12-15 with two time options: 9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4 p.m. Space is open for 12 children in each time slot. Quinn, a Southlake resident who works full-time as a musician and DJ, has seen kids’ enthusiasm for getting behind the booth. That’s why he’s offering a camp this month. “It seems that DJs are the new rockstars of today’s generation,” he says. “With so many kids eager to learn, I saw a great opportunity to teach them.” Quinn got some equipment, booked a space at The Marq and is ready to teach children the ins and outs of being a DJ. Participants will learn to mix, match, crossfade, cue, hot cue, loop, EQ, filter, stutter and throw a great dance party overall. Visit DanQuinnBand.com for registration information.

WESTLAKE ACADEMY CELEBRATED 2016 TEACHER OF THE YEAR Westlake Academy honored four teachers as finalists for 2016 Teacher of the Year. Elizabeth Nairon, math teacher in the Middle Years Programme, took the honor as Westlake Academy’s third Teacher of the Year. Nairon teaches Algebra at Westlake Academy and has been teaching math in the DFW area for 20 years. The other finalists included three teachers from the Primary Years Programme: Sarah Firsching, first grade teacher; Nicole Bauer, primary mathematics specialist and department head; and Laura Fischer, fourth grade teacher. Westlake Academy has honored a Teacher of the Year since 2013. A selection committee coordinated by the Campus Leadership Team (CLT) selects the winner. The CLT is made up of students, teachers, administration, and community members from Westlake and Keller. After submissions to the team from parents, students, teachers and staff, the list was narrowed to the four nominees. DON’T MISS RELAY FOR LIFE OF NORTHERN TARRANT COUNTY This year’s Relay For Life, a signature event of the American Cancer Society, should be bigger than ever. The 2016 Relay For Life of Northern Tarrant County combines Relays formerly held in Southlake, Keller and Grapevine and includes areas such as Colleyville, Roanoke and Westlake for a completely new event. The action will unfold on Saturday, July 23 from 6 p.m. to midnight at Texas Motor Speedway. “We are so excited about this Relay For Life including all the communities of northern Tarrant County,” said Event Manager Sonia Leal. “With it being in the summer, we’re hoping families will come out to enjoy the entertainment and to support a worthy cause.” Relay For Life events, now numbering more than 6,000 worldwide, are free, family events open to the public. All cancer survivors are invited to launch the Relay by taking the first lap together.

EXECUTIVE MEDICINE OF TEXAS PARTNERS WITH CITY OF SOUTHLAKE TO ENCOURAGE WELLNESS This summer, the City of Southlake is putting wellness at the forefront … again. Last year, Southlake started its LiveFit Wellness Challenge which included walks with Mayor Laura Hill through city parks, a health fair and a 5K to cap it all off. The emphasis was on getting outside and increasing physical activity, not only for individuals, but for families, too. The LiveFit program was successful from the beginning, with 300 runners participating in an end-of-season run. New this summer is a lecture series presented by Executive Medicine of Texas, a preventative and proactive medical practice that has won awards for its wellness programs and published books. “The addition of lectures is what makes LiveFit/LiveWell a great partnership that will benefit so many people,” said Mayor Laura Hill. Lectures run through August. Visit SouthlakeStyle.com to view the schedule.

The entry fee includes 18 holes of golf, a cart, lunch and the option for a local sports celebrity to ride along with the group and play. Sponsorship packages begin at $500. CARROLL SEVENTH GRADER BROKE SCHOOL’S MILE RECORD WITH HELP OF FORMER RECORD HOLDER Carroll seventh grader Antonio Florcruz broke the seventh grade record for the mile in April. The record stood for 13 years, according to his father, Arturo. Antonio ran the mile in 5:11.87, a mere .64 seconds faster than the former record holder, Colby Lowe’s time. Just recently elected to the Southlake Hall of Fame, Lowe was there to help Antonio accomplish the milestone. “I just think it’s such a great example of mentoring, sportsmanship, and how the Southlake community helps each other,” Arturo said.

MOSQUITO SHIELD® Mosquito protection that really works

L

ike many homeowners in the DFW area, Paul and Patty Martin and their four children enjoy spending time in their backyard. Unfortunately, the good weather that entices them outside can also attract unwelcome guests like mosquitoes. When Tarrant County began setting up mosquito traps to test for West Nile virus near the entrance to their Colleyville subdivision, the Martins knew it was time to do something. Their solution: Mosquito Shield®, a highly effective mosquito control spray, which helps provide protection from annoying pests and harmful bites.

How it works “Since no two properties are identical, Mosquito Shield provides a customized strategy specifically tailored to your property,” says Paul. “We employ a three-pronged approach: kill existing mosquitoes immediately, mask human and pet carbon dioxide (which attracts mosquitoes) and repel them from your property.” Using a proprietary blend of mostly natural ingredients—including plant extracts and essential oils such as garlic, cedar, lemongrass and peppermint, plus a small amount of a control product that kills mosquitoes on contact—Mosquito Shield sprays around the perimeter your property and active areas such as pools, decks, patios, fire pits, etc. “We focus on areas where mosquitoes breed and congregate and create a barrier that keeps mosquitoes out of your yard all season long,” adds Paul.

Specialized Company Mosquitoes are different from other insects and you need a specialized company that understands their lifecycle and behavior to provide you with the best and most consistent results. Maximum effectiveness requires spraying when and where mosquitoes are most active. While other companies may only spray monthly or when requested, Mosquito Shield sprays every 10 to 17 days, weather permitting, throughout the entire mosquito season. This means consistent protection throughout mosquito season, which typically runs from mid-March through October.

Results Guaranteed Mosquito Shield offers an unconditional money back guarantee, but their results speak to their success, with more than 90 percent of their customers returning season after season. So if you love being outside but hate those annoying pests, contact Mosquito Shield today and get back to enjoying your great outdoors.

“IS THERE ANY GREATER ANNOYANCE THAN A MOSQUITO BUZZING IN YOUR EAR JUST WHILE YOU ARE DEEP ASLEEP IN YOUR OWN BED?!”

AS SOUTHLAKE WELCOMES NEW RETAIL STORES AND RESTAURANTS TO THE COMMUNITY, OTHERS, LIKE WALMART AND FRESH MARKET, HAVE LEFT THE CITY. IS IT STILL BOOM TIME, OR HAVE WE REACHED OUR COMMERCIAL LIMIT?

BOOM OR BUST

Photography by BluDoor Studios

BY LORI STACY

IT’S hard to imagine the type of store or restaurant that Southlake lacks. Whatever your need, desire or taste, it’s likely that you won’t have to venture far from home to get it. Nearly every type of cuisine is represented here, from American-style (think Redrock Canyon Grill) to Thai and Vietnamese (think Malai Kitchen). Looking for a fitness class? Places in Southlake can indulge your desire to work out at the barre (Pure Barre) or try cardio cycling (ZYN22). And stores from Lauren James to Kendra Scott have joined the already impressive list of retail outposts in the city. “My husband and I laugh about it,” says Lisa Fraga, who has lived in Southlake for 12 years. “Every time we wish a store would come here, it usually does.” Whereas Fraga and her family used to have to drive to Dallas to go to Tyler’s or Central Market, they now drive less than 10 minutes from their home. Indeed, that has been the goal of the city’s leaders—attracting the quantity and quality of businesses that turn Southlake into a destination for both residents and visitors.

31

A THRIVING CITY “We’re getting close to having every kind of shop you can imagine,” says Shannon Hamons, Southlake’s economic development director. “A lot of what we do is vetting businesses that may or may not be good fits.” He adds: “Southlake has become a destination in itself. The Hilton operates near capacity nearly all the time.” Perhaps that’s why other hotels, such as the Westin, which plans to build a 220-room property at Highway 114 and Carroll, and Hotel Indigo, which plans to build a 121-room boutique property in Carillon, are heading this way. “People in Oklahoma and Arkansas look at Southlake as a place to spend the weekend,” says Laura Hill, Southlake’s mayor, who credits not only the businesses for attracting out-of-towners, but also the popular festivals with a small-town feel, such as Art in the Square and Oktoberfest.

32

But she also realizes that the small-town moniker may not work with the city much longer. With roughly 29,000 residents in the city today, residential build-out is likely to be reached in five to 10 years, and, as Hill points out, “We don’t have that much land left [for development].” The newest developments, including Park Village and Kimball Oaks, the 126,000-square-foot retail space that includes PGA Superstore and BJ’s Brewhouse, are already reaching capacity in terms of tenants—something their leasing agents say wasn’t too hard a sell. But while some businesses are clamoring to come to Southlake, the city has lost others, such as Walmart Neighborhood Market, Fresh Market, Steak ’n Shake and McDonald’s. According to both Hill and Hamons, though, it wasn’t as much an issue of Southlake being the wrong fit, but rather that the businesses themselves were facing issues that had nothing to do with the community. In the case of Fresh Market, which has closed all of its Texas stores, Hill even reached out to the grocer’s management team to help them understand Southlake a bit more. “I called the CEO and had a long call with him seven or eight months ago,” she says. “I said, ‘Are you okay with me being honest with you?’ When he said yes, I told him, ‘You must reach out to the community.’”

A KEY COMPONENT TO SUCCESS Hill feels strongly that the businesses that do succeed here are the ones that participate in the community, the ones that get involved and give back. “The successful places are successful because they go above and beyond,” she says.

And as Hamons points out, “The vacant places don’t stay vacant very long.” As an example, the shuttered Steak ’n Shake wasn’t closed for long before Pollo Tropical came in to take its spot. Hill echoes his sentiments: “There is a line of businesses ready to open in Southlake.” Additionally, some of the places that have closed in Southlake have closed for corporate reasons and not because Southlake wasn’t a good fit, as with Fresh Market and the Walmart Neighborhood Market, which was one of 23 such stores that Walmart closed as part of a corporate decision to, as Walmart put it in a January 2016 announcement, “ensure assets were aligned with strategy.” Hill sees it differently: “They didn’t participate in the community.” Contrast that with the busy and popular Central Market in Southlake, which hosts wine tastings, live music on the patio and in-store food festivals that draw in residents, and you can understand why Hill thinks there’s more to being successful in Southlake than just hanging your proverbial shingle. Great Harvest Bread Company, which opened in June, is another example of a business working to become part of the community. Even before it opened its doors, Great Harvest Bread Company reached out to the city to find out where the bread employees made as part of their training could be donated. And rather than follow a standard-format design for the restaurant, the Montana-based company gave the space some Texas touches, including framed Texas flags and an old windmill. No wonder, as Hill puts it, the restaurant already has a “cult-like following.” During its grand-opening celebration, Park Village—home to RA Sushi, Michael’s, Sur la Table and many others—donated its proceeds from the kick-off to Miracle League of Southlake, which provides children with special needs the opportunity to play baseball. Retail centers and restaurants are not alone in ingratiating themselves with the community; businesses that choose to locate here, as with the city’s largest employer, Sabre, and the forthcoming T.D. Ameritrade, do as well. Kim Hillyer, a spokesperson for Ameritrade, says that community involvement is important to the company. “Our employees are highly engaged and expect to get involved in Southlake once we do move. There’s a school across the road from the new campus and employees have already asked about volunteer opportunities there.” These large corporate campuses along Highway 114 have also been a contributing factor in the city’s retail and restaurant success, as these businesses bring not just revenue, but employees who shop and dine in the city, particularly during the weekday, when retail traffic is lower. TD Ameritrade will welcome 1,500 employees into its 300,000-squarefoot campus when the first phase of building has been completed, and the Granite Properties office building being developed in Town Square near Highway 114 is expected to have more than 700 employees in the 160,000-square-foot space.

A PLAN FOR GROWTH But while the city sees the economic benefits these large corporate campuses bring, some residents, such as Fraga, worry about the impact they will have on neighborhood roads. Fraga lives in Kirkwood Hollow, near Sabre and the TD Ameritrade campuses. With no freeway access road, her neighborhood street—Kirkwood Boulevard— has become a thoroughfare, which concerns not only Fraga but many of the residents of Kirkwood Hollow, she says. To that end, Hill is pushing for an eco-friendly trolley system that would shuttle people to and from the various businesses and hotels in Southlake. A transit system would at least help alleviate some of the traffic and parking concerns, as employees at these businesses would be encouraged to park once in the morning, and leave their cars there, even if they frequent the city’s retail and restaurant establishments during the day. “We have to start modernizing and becoming more eco-friendly,” Hill says. With large retail centers such as Town Square, Kimball Oaks and Park Village, she adds, “We do have a city ‘center.’” About the only business not present in the community, and noticeably missing from Southlake Town Square, is a big-box department store. But that doesn’t worry Hill or Hamons. “I couldn’t care less about a department store,” says Hill, who notes that the community attracts smaller, more unique stores and restaurants. “We continue to get more boutique businesses—small, regional businesses that really pick and choose the best place to be,” says Hill. Hamons agrees, pointing out that Cooper & Stebbins, developers of Southlake Town Square, were close to a deal a few years ago with a big-box department store retailer, but ultimately the retailer’s demands, they felt, were too costly. “The need for a department store is less now,” Hamons says. “I think we can carry the day without that big box.” It’s a reality to which Southlake residents are accustomed: New stores and restaurants move in; others depart. So what can be gleaned from all this commercial commotion? The shops and businesses that come to Southlake—and succeed—do so to the benefit of Southlake’s residents through community involvement and contributing to a healthy tenant mix.

DOCS Robert E. Bayless, M.D. WHAT IS YOUR HEALTHCARE PASSION AND HOW DID YOU COME TO REALIZE IT? All of my life I have enjoyed working with and helping people. I have also enjoyed fixing or repairing broken objects ever since I was a child. As an orthopedic surgeon, I have been able to combine these two passions by working with people who are broken or in pain and helping them recover and return to an active lifestyle by both nonsurgical and surgical treatments. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT WORKING WITH PATIENTS? I enjoy talking to my patients and getting to know them personally. Through these personal relationships, I have often had the honor to treat several generations of the same family for their orthopedic problems and help them return to normal or improved function. TELL US ABOUT THE LATEST PROCEDURES OR NEW TECHNOLOGIES YOU ARE MOST PROUD TO OFFER. Total hip and knee replacements can now be performed through much smaller incisions with much less blood loss than in previous years. The techniques and medications can block most of the initial postoperative pain for up to three days, making it possible for patients to stand and walk full weight-bearing even a few hours after the surgery and go home the next day.

aking a beach vacation with a group of girlfriends or your family this summer? While surf, sand and sun destinations are meant for relaxation, kicking back doesn’t mean you should slack in the accessories department as you prepare for your trip. However, we aren’t talking about beach bling that might get lost while searching for seashells. Jewelry can do wonders to complete your travelin-style look, but there is no need to dress up your wardrobe with anything more than a practical yet stylish beach tote. Michael Kors’ Santorini Large Raffia Tote is the right style and the right size to keep your sunglasses, sunscreen and supplemental reading material in one place for fashionable beach lounging. But it’s more than just a place to store your stuff. You’ll be happy to carry the Santorini to and from your beach umbrella. Let’s talk about what makes this tote stylish. Raffia is an aesthetic beachy material, but its durability can only make it stand out from the beach-tote crowd for so long. One of the best qualities of the Santorini’s material is that it is right on trend for 2016. During New York’s Fashion Week last fall, raffia clothing, accessories and, of course, handbags and totes were seen on runway after runway. Raffia is a classic fiber that has returned to the beach scene in style—a step above basic vinyl-lined raffia totes with canvas handles. The 2016 styles include plenty of modern details such as leather and metal accents. The Santorini tote is available with either persimmon- or luggage-hued handles, which have a 10-inch drop. The bright colors of the leather handles really make the bag stand out as more than just a beach accessory. They truly give the tote an elegant edge, elevating it from a casual tote to a practical handbag. After all, who wants to lug around two means of storage? The roomy tote is just the right size to pack a towel, sunscreen (important enough to mention twice) and most of the additional items you usually carry around in your handbag. Taking a summer vacation can be planned or spontaneous and, if it is the latter, you’ll want to be ready in a hurry. Grab your Michael Kors Santorini Large Raffia Tote and hop on that plane with confidence. No matter your destination or type of locale you end up visiting, the tote will have a place on your arm. From local shop browsing and dining out for brunch or lunch, to just making your way to the pool or beach, the Santorini is both practical and fashionable.

WHETHER you’re seeking a hand assembling those favors or you could use some help dreaming up the ultimate theme, get ready to invest. At Two Girls in Pearls Events, services for planning a child’s birthday party range from $500 to $1,500. The fee varies depending on what services are needed: complete planning, partial planning or just coordinating the day by overseeing setup, cleanup and event timeline. “It may be a kid’s party, but we still want it be a great event for everyone involved,” says Vines. Kristen Knight, CWP, owner of Shenanigans Weddings & Events in Trophy Club, says the first step in planning a child’s birthday party is simply talking it out. “When people call us, many times they’re not exactly sure what to expect or even what they’re looking for,” she says. For Knight’s birthday-planning prowess, clients have spent up to $7,000. Like Two Girls in Pearls Events, Knight offers services tailored to clients’ specific needs. Her services can be as simple as developing a party plan—a written outline of ideas, vendors, and design and décor ideas that fit within the client’s budget and vision—to taking on the entire conception and execution of the event. “Basically, a soup-to-nuts approach,” says Knight.

here is always huge satisfaction T seeing the child or guest of honor having fun or hearing them say, “THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED!”

Knight and her assistant, Deana Sabey, recently planned a party for a set of twin boys turning 10. When they met with the twins’ mom, she had many ideas but needed help narrowing them down. And she also needed a cohesive theme for the event—one child loved video games and the other was into dancing. Knight’s solution? A dance party/video game combo she called “10 Squared.” The family’s home was transformed into an adrenaline-pumping, music-thumping venue complete with all the twins’ favorite things: a dance floor with a DJ dropping beats and a video game station where players could kick back in colorful bean bags. “Seeing everything pulled off—we just love that,” says Knight. “There is always huge satisfaction seeing the child or guest of honor having fun or hearing them say, ‘This is exactly what I wanted!’” Knight and Sabey have done a little of everything in the birthday celebrations they’ve planned, including a Sweet 16 party that transformed the Timarron Country Club into a scene to rival one of Dallas’ hottest night clubs. They pulled out all the stops for the milestone bash, including a bouncer at the door, a DJ at the turntable … and a gorgeous, three-tier cake as the event’s centerpiece. Because it’s not a birthday party without a birthday cake. Ruth Robbins of Tastefully Yours Cakes in Southlake created the cake for the Sweet 16 party. She’s been making cakes for 25 years for all kinds of celebrations. For birthday parties, parents spend anywhere from $60 to $300 for a custom cake to commemorate the occasion. Her creations range from whimsical cakes for first birthdays to elaborate, multi-tiered masterpieces. For kids’ parties, she says classic flavors still reign: vanilla, chocolate and confetti. The trend these days is adding three-dimensional elements to cakes—think sparkling wings or a horn on a unicorn cake. Whatever parents may dream up (or save from Pinterest), she’s happy to make it. “I’ve seen cakes go from simple sheet cakes to elaborate tiered creations. There are no limits to your imagination when it comes to my cakes,” she says. “Each cake is a work of love and art for me.” THE JOY OF BIRTHDAYS A birthday party is an event to celebrate the birthday boy or girl, but Paige Chenault knows the event ends up being so much more. In 2012, she founded The Birthday Party Project, an Addisonbased nonprofit that brings the joy of birthday parties to homeless children. Since its inception, the organization has celebrated more than 1,600 birthdays with more than 15,000 children and 4,500 volunteers, a.k.a birthday enthusiasts. Chenault left a 10-year career as a wedding planner and started the nonprofit out of a passion for serving others. That and the fact she’s always up for a great party. “I love being able to celebrate people, whether it’s watching a wedding unfold in a big ballroom or watching a birthday party unfold in a homeless shelter,” she says.

The Birthday Party Project currently operates in 10 cities, including Dallas-Fort Worth, and throws 26 parties each month. A team of birthday enthusiasts decides on a monthly theme (county fair is the theme for July), and then plans the birthday party from start to finish, from activities, crafts and games to cupcakes and party favors. Then, it’s party time. They gather everything and bring it to the homeless shelter or transitional living center. “We want there to be joy surrounding the uncertainty or trauma that’s associated with living there,” explains Chenault. Each one-hour party is a time to celebrate all the kids with a birthday that month. Every birthday child receives a gift, a special birthday badge and a bundtlet. And every child in the shelter is invited to the party. “We believe in creating a community,” she says. The organization started the “Share Your Birthday” campaign, in which kids and adults can have gifts or party supplies donated to The Birthday Party Project on their behalf. Chenault also welcomes volunteers and donations of all kinds. “We have face painters come in or we have someone who’s connected with tickets to a sporting event bring the kids to see a game,” she says. “We feel like the sky’s the limit.” The mantra of The Birthday Party Project is “joy changes lives.” It’s not just an empty expression or catchy hashtag for social media. “When we say that joy changes lives, we actually mean it,” Chenault says. “Our parties are an opportunity for us to interact with people just like us, only living in unfortunate circumstances. We’re bridging the gap between two communities.” Chenault’s eight-year-old daughter often volunteers with her, which means she’s running around with all the other kids. Chenault describes the parties as “pure chaotic joy.” At a party, birthday enthusiasts form a soccer-tunnel entrance and all the kids run through. Kids dance to pulse-pounding music or head to a station to enjoy an activity or craft. Some of kids’ favorite activities have been smashing through a paper wall with giant Hulk hands and painting a portrait at an art station. About 45 minutes into the party, birthday enthusiasts line up all the birthday kids, call them by name and everyone sings “Happy Birthday” at the top of their lungs. “There’s such power in these tiny moments of connecting,” Chenault says. “Celebrations bring out the best in people.”

Smoked Meat Chic Enjoy high-end barbecue fare at 18th & Vine.

T 18TH & VINE 4100 Maple Ave. Dallas 214.443.8335 18thAndVineBBQ.com

Southlake STYLE Magazine

exans are fiercely loyal to our style of barbecue, but 18th & Vine is here to challenge that. Barbecue purists may scoff, though; this is the kind of place that takes reservations, offers a full bar and also serves chef-created steak and seafood dishes. Surely any barbecue worth its sauce wouldn’t be found in a place with nice napkins. But 18th & Vine is shaking up this mentality. The upscale restaurant blazed onto the Dallas food scene last fall with its take on barbecue: Kansas City-style all the way. The restaurant’s style is sweet, spicy and smoky, from the rubs and woods to the sauces. All the meats are cooked low and slow over hickory and oak. Pit Boss Matt Dallman says, “Everything is made with lots of time and love.” Dallman moved from Kansas City to Dallas in 2001 and started the restaurant after missing the barbecue from his home state. He has racked

up a slew of accolades for his pit prowess, including a Fort Worth Food + Wine Festival Judges Choice Award in March. “I didn’t know how it’d go, taking pulled pork to a brisket party,” he says, laughing, “but at the end of the day, we believed in our ’cue.” The menu at 18th & Vine is indeed heavy with the restaurant’s award-winning barbecue. The lunch and dinner menus are laden with options including brisket, house-made sausage, chicken, pulled pork, turkey and ribs. There’s even a cauliflower “steak,” the restaurant’s vegetarian option. Sandwiches such as The Lester (grilled cheese with brisket) and The Basie (brisket, jalapeños and pepper jack cheese) star exclusively on the lunch menu. Accompanied by one of the restaurant’s side dishes such as Pit Beans or Jalapeño Cheese Grits, each plate is a hearty mouth-pleaser of a meal.

LF LOCALFLAVOR review Pulled Rib Meat Gnochhi

76 • July 16

For those with bigger appetites, barbecue plates are the way to go. Available all day, each dish is loaded with a half pound or full pound of meat. Whichever size you order, though, it feels like you get more. The portion sizes are far from skimpy. When it comes to barbecue that pays homage to Kansas City, the pork ribs are more authentic than perhaps anything else on the menu. They’re incredibly tender and saucy, with just the right balance of sweet and smoky. If you opt to take your meal to go, we love that you can grab a gallon of lemonade, iced tea or Arnold Palmer. It feels pricey at $10 a jug, but we think it’s the perfect way to wash down some good, true-blue barbecue. And while we love sweet tea as much as the next Texan, it’s refreshing to have options. Smoked meats are center stage at 18th & Vine, but there are plenty of chef-crafted entrées should you want to explore something different. Scott Gottlich, a classically trained chef, is at the helm of the restaurant’s composed dishes. He says he loves “taking classic combinations and bending them to work with the cooking technique of barbecue.” One example is the Wood-Kissed Salmon, which is served with pit-creamed corn and roasted tomato. This dish is bright and mellow all at once. It’s an intriguing combination of flavors. The Smoked Pork Chop is another dish to try. The pork is flavorful and tender, but the sides—vanilla sweet potatoes and pickled plums—almost steal the show. The potatoes are velvety and fragrant. We happily scooped up every last bite. The atmosphere at 18th & Vine also sets it apart from other barbecue establishments. The downstairs main dining room pays tribute to jazz and blues legends, which is appropriate since the restaurant is named after a popular jazz district in Kansas City. Upstairs is The Roost, a lively music venue and bar. “We’re excited about everything going on in The Roost. It’s a key part of what 18th & Vine means—honoring the history of jazz and giving the local music scene a place to set up shop,” says Dallman. “Plus, live music pairs so well with barbecue.” And, if you’re looking for a cool spot to impress your Dallas friends, it’s available to rent for private parties. We say put your allegiance to Texas barbecue aside—at least for a meal at 18th & Vine. It’s easily one of the best purveyors of smoked meats in Big D. Go on and give it a try. We have a feeling you’ll like it.

Happiness by the Pint Find frozen delights in fanciful flavors at Central Market. Summer is an ice cream shop’s time to shine, but some of the best scoops can be found in the freezer—specifically at Central Market. Southlake’s foodie hub is churning out some of the season’s coolest treats: pints of small-batch craft ice cream. The store’s lineup of cold and creamy delights is anything but vanilla (although you can certainly stick with the classic, if you prefer). Central Market pushes the boundaries with nearly a dozen ambitious flavors such as Chile Pepper Pecan and Coconut Ginger. Let’s just say: It’s not a good time to institute a dairy-free diet. On its blog, Central Market writes, “We made a truly unique, crazy-fun, foodie-forward, sigh-inducing line of pure joy by the pint.” It’s indeed National Ice Cream Month, but we don’t need an excuse to indulge in some frosty magic—especially since this treat was three years in the making. A source at Central Market says, “The goal was to make the best-tasting ice cream. We didn’t move forward until everything was perfect.”

CENTRAL MARKET 1425 E. Southlake Blvd. 817.310.5600

Concocting the ideal gourmet ice cream with just the right amount of “foodie-ness,” as the store says, took a whole lot of mixing, experimenting and sampling. More than 50 recipes went through a taste test, and nine were declared the crème de la crème of craft ice cream. Each flavor begins with a velvety base of custard. The ice cream is then crafted in small batches for an amplified taste experience. So whether you savor a spoonful or the whole pint of flavors such as Hazelnut Latte and Whiskey Honey, you’re getting a mega dose of flavor. The local favorite? Dark Chocolate Ganache. Southlake purchases more of this flavor than any other, according to our Central Market. The ice cream is swirled with bits of Belgian chocolate for a decadently rich treat. Though we never say no to chocolate, we happened to be intrigued by Jamaican Jam. The name lured us in (it sounds so fun and summery) and the taste got us hooked. The ice cream is made with only a few simple ingredients: dark rum, sweet cream, handmade date jam and a pinch of salt. We consider it a sweetly sophisticated way to combat the July heat. While there’s no shortage of sweet scoops around town, Central Market’s imaginative flavor combos will please every palate. If you’re a scoop enthusiast (and aren’t we all in the summer?), grab a bowl, cup or cone … or a spoon to eat straight from the container. When it comes to a frozen treat that’s as unique as it is flavorful, Central Market has it licked.

Feel Like Chicken Tonight? Redrock Canyon Grill dishes up a robust chicken dinner…and then some.

REDROCK CANYON GRILL 2221 E. Southlake Blvd. 817.912.1510 RedrockCanyonGrill.com

80 • July 16

In Southlake’s ever-expanding restaurant scene, Redrock Canyon Grill stands apart. Ironically, for doing something conventional: rotisserie chicken. But we’re not talking about a bird plucked from under a heat lamp; the Oklahoma-based restaurant chain is known for its wood-fired poultry. It’s a recurring ingredient in many of Redrock’s dishes, from the classic Rotisserie Chicken plate (a hearty dish of chicken, redskin mashed potatoes and sweet glazed carrots) to the Rock Salad (a zesty combination of romaine, radicchio, red onions, black bean salsa and rotisserie chicken). And because the restaurant is designed with an open concept, which it calls “hacienda-style,” patrons can view the rotisseries behind a large glass wall. The kitchen occupies center stage, so people can observe their meals being prepared—whether they’ve ordered the famed rotisserie chicken or another dish. Though Redrock specializes in home-style chicken dinners, it also has a distinctive Southwestern flair. We’re talking enchilada platters, tortilla soup and stuffed poblanos. And don’t overlook the ultimate comfort-food starter: Iron Skillet Cornbread. It’s perfectly browned on top with a soft, crumbly center. Rotisserie chicken is what Redrock is known for, but the cornbread is a close second. Don’t necessarily want chicken? Try the Persimmon Hill Meatloaf. It’s topped with a fire-roasted tomato sauce and served with mashed potatoes and glazed carrots. This is the kind of meal that evokes all the comforts of home. It’s familiar and flavorful, not to mention filling. We also recommend the Bunkhouse St. Louis Barbeque Ribs. It’s a full slab of saucy, falloff-the-bone ribs, served with the same home-style sides. But don’t be hesitant to request a substitution—the sides are part of the fun at Redrock. You can order anything from couscous and seasoned shrimp to an enchilada à la carte. There’s even something for vegetarians: the Seasonal Vegetable Platter, which includes heaping helpings of glazed carrots, green beans, sliced tomatoes, summer squash and couscous. The veggies change seasonally, but the couscous is a regular component. It’s indeed a platter—plan for leftovers. Redrock is primarily a dinner-only restaurant. It’s open for brunch and lunch on Sunday only. You’re not missing much on the brunch side; the restaurant serves quiche and an omelet, but all the other menu items lean more toward lunch bites. There’s a burger, some sandwiches and a chicken pot pie. The options are limited on the sweet side: choose from a housemade key lime pie or banana pudding. The atmosphere is upscale but not stuffy, with plenty of leather-backed booths for relaxing and enjoying dinner. For those looking for a taste of home (without having to lift a finger in the kitchen), Redrock Canyon Grill won’t disappoint.

Nature and Namaste THREE OF THE COUNTRY’S BEST YOGA RETREATS

W

hile staying faithful to your yoga class routine is advised, there’s no rule that states yogis must stay indoors. However, practicing yoga outdoors in the suburbs comes with many distractions. Buzzing bugs or whizzing lawn equipment in your neighbor’s backyard can easily throw a kink in the links between your chakras. The best atmosphere in which to center your mind and body is one where nature and Namaste unite. These three American yoga foundations and retreat centers provide the ideal setting to get Zen. Unplug from the world and reconnect with your inner spirit.

Feathered Pipe Ranch, Montana The wide-open spaces of Montana still undisturbed by strip malls and pavement make for an ideal spot for a meditation and yoga retreat center. City smog is replaced with the smell of pine trees emanating from the forest that surrounds Feathered Pipe Ranch in the state’s capital, Helena. Far from the city’s center, the 40-year-old ranch sits right in the middle of the Montana Rockies and hosts yoga retreats for the mind, body and soul. Known for its variety of summer retreats, Feathered Pipe Ranch brings in special guest teachers and leaders in addition to its onsite staff to guide meditation and yoga classes. A typical summer yoga retreat includes two classes, specific to the retreat’s theme, lasting two to three hours each. These classes include practicing yoga and other forms of meditation. An optional guided morning walk and evening activity is also offered.

84 • July 16

Your stay includes breakfast, lunch and dinner each day. With access to organic produce and meats, the menu includes a variety of healthy dishes for each meal. In addition, vegetarian and fish or chicken alternatives are available at most workshops. Indoor accommodations at the ranch include four-bed rooms in the Main Lodge and six double rooms with private shared baths at the Ranch Chalet. A cabin and condo are also available. If you’d like to be immersed in nature, outdoor accommodations include yurts, tipis and tents. Foam pads, lightweight sleeping bags, pillows, blankets and small camp lights are provided. Kalani Big Island Retreat Center, Hawaii The 120-acre Kalani Retreat Center campus, located in the Puna District, sits along the southeast coast of the island. Natural attractions include Kilauea, one of the world’s most active volcanoes. Cliffs created from the lava offer breathtaking views of the Kalani coast and a perfect spot for yoga and meditation. Not only is the retreat a mecca for yogis, Kalani is a nonprofit organization that serves as a model for implementing best practices in permaculture and sustainability. Attending a yoga or meditation retreat here means you’ll be doing good things for Mother Earth. The six-day, seven-night “Introduction to Yoga” retreat at Kalani is an opportunity for beginning yogis to get out of the classroom at home and explore what yoga can do for the mind and body in a natural setting. Attendees will review the basic principles of Hatha (physical) yoga and develop the spiritual and physical connection with their bodies and yoga practice. The retreat package includes accommodations, meals, group classes and two 1.5-hour private yoga classes as well as access to Kalani’s facilities, which include a pool, hot tub and sauna. Living quarters include cottages, lofts, tree houses, bungalows and Hale lodges—traditional Hawaiian two-level houses. Bear in mind there is no air conditioning or heating. But since you are next to the coast, wouldn’t you rather experience island breezes than the hum of a heating or cooling unit? That sounds good to us. Kalani’s dining lanai and kitchen offer cuisine that includes the flavors of Thai, Indian and Italian fare. Local tropical fruits and vegetables, along with freshly caught fish, make for a refreshing menu of healthy and enjoyable meals. Kalani.com

White Lotus Foundation, California A hidden gem along the central coast of California, the White Lotus Foundation mountain retreat center sits on 40 acres in the San Marcos Pass. Located on a steep canyon, the retreat overlooks Santa Barbara, the Pacific Ocean and Channel Islands. If you’re looking for calming waters, search no farther than the bottom of the canyon where the San Jose creek flows year-round. The natural surroundings of the yoga and meditation center not only include fresh mountain air and spring water, but also sandstone swimming holes and hiking trails. The foundation hosts various yoga retreats throughout the year, which typically fall on weekends. These retreats follow simple schedules of yoga classes, meals, self-reflection hikes or other solo activities, group meditation and pranayama (a breathing practice of Hindu yoga). Yogis have the opportunity to attend a more specific retreat at White Lotus, which varies in theme each year. The latest one to take place focused on pranayama, giving attendees an in-depth look at the ancient practice. Yoga instructors have the opportunity to attend training retreats at the center, as well. Whether you choose to spend the night in a loft or outdoors in yurts or camping tents, there are plenty of secluded places for silent reflection. Other facilities at the White Lotus retreat center include a large yoga meeting room, a kitchen and dining room serving gourmet vegetarian cuisine, and an underground Hopi-style "Kiva” temple. Laugh Your Heart Out Funny dad Jim Gaffigan delivers the laughs in Dallas.

G

exa Energy Pavilion. Grammy-nominated comedian, New York Times best-selling author, top-touring performer, actor and producer, and one of the funniest dads around, Jim Gaffigan, is kicking off his latest comedy tour, “Fully Dressed,” in Dallas this month. Known for his self-deprecating wit on the subjects of food, fatherhood and laziness, Gaffigan is packing up the tour bus and hitting the road with his family for an extensive 30-city tour. “I’m so thrilled to be eating my way across America again… Oh, wait, I’m doing shows too?” he joked. Considering that he’s now KFC’s new Colonel Sanders, which was revealed during Super Bowl 50, we’re guessing he’s probably pretty set up for some all-you-can-eat fried chicken. There’s no doubt that 2015 was a monumental year for Gaffigan; he became one of only 10 comedians in history to sell out the famed Madison Square Garden arena on the final date of his “Contagious” tour. Gaffigan also opened up for Pope Francis in front of more than one million people at an event in Philadelphia. He even has his own television series, “The Jim Gaffigan Show.” The TV Land program, which is inspired by his life, debuted with enormous ratings. Watch for the second season this summer. If you’re ready for some good times, lighthearted fun and comedy that you just might relate to, don’t miss your chance to catch Gaffigan when he comes to North Texas. His quick wit and impeccable comedic timing will tickle your funny bone. Who’s ready for some laughs?

Run for a Slice Melon Dash is a summer race full of fruity fun.

T

own Lake Park. When you pound the pavement this summer, it’s nice to know there’s a cold treat awaiting you at the finish line—and we’re not talking about a cup of Gatorade. At the annual Melon Dash in McKinney’s Town Lake Park, refreshing watermelon serves as a sweet conclusion to the race. If that sounds like a nice perk to you, lace up your running shoes and head out for the 5K or Fun Run. The Fun Run kicks off at 7:45 a.m. followed by the 5K at 8 a.m. This is the seventh “Run Project” race scheduled for 2016. The Run Project includes 13 running events with an emphasis on both passion for running and giving back locally; each race benefits an area nonprofit.

Southlake STYLE Magazine

The event’s entry fee benefits the League of Animal Protectors, an all-volunteer, nonprofit animal rescue and adoption organization. And don’t forget about all the awesome race swag! Participants will receive a Melon Dash T-shirt, temporary tattoos and sunglasses. It might be hot out there, but you’ll look so cool. Runners who brave the Texas heat will be greeted with cold towels and plenty of refreshments at the finish line. The community cranks up the fun by coming out and cheering for the runners along the race route. Some homeowners play inspirational tunes and even run alongside participants. Even if you don’t compete, you can still bring the family to cheer on the runners and support this great cause.

TELL ME A STORY SOUTHLAKE’S BELOVED STORYTELLER, ELIZABETH BEAMON, WANTS TO INCITE A LOVE OF LEARNING IN THE NEXT GENERATION OF READERS.

For Elizabeth Beamon, books aren’t just part of her job at the Southlake Public Library; they’re a way to personally connect with community members. Affectionately known as “Ms. Elizabeth,” Beamon uses story time to share her love of literature and introduce children to the magic of books. Settle in … it’s story time. Q: You’ve been a storyteller in Southlake for 15 years. What do you enjoy most about what you do? A: Getting to know the young and young at heart. As a professional storyteller, I have performed all over Texas. When I perform here, I get to connect with my audience. Feedback from listeners is so much fun. I often say to our crowd, “You can’t make this stuff up! It’s live theater.” Q: Give us an idea of a typical day for you. A: We collaborate as a team at the Southlake Public Library. Stacy Wells, our Youth Services Librarian, and I plan and perform the story times for which we are known. Also, I help at the front desk, get materials ready for the shelf, and often help parents and grandparents find great books for their children. Q: How do you select the books to read for story time? A: Ms. Stacy and I have weekly meetings on what we will share. We introduce children to music, rhymes and poetry as well as books. These enrich our story times—music and repetition are powerful. We also remind parents, grandparents and caregivers to bring the culture of their childhood into their children’s lives. Q: Favorite book you love reading to the kids? A: That’s a hard one—there is such great literature. “Millions of Cats” by Wanda Gág and “The Story of Ferdinand” by Munro Leaf would be two of many. Often we have requests from mystery readers during the school year, and I try not to overwhelm them with my enthusiasm. Q: What’s the age range for most kids who attend? A: Most of our little ones are babies to four years old. This summer, we’ve seen two-week-old siblings come with their mommy and big brother or sister because someone needs to get out. Q: Is there a particular book that’s often requested? A: Our little fans are so young they haven’t chosen a favorite yet. However, they love the puppets Ms. Stacy

and I bring to our story time. If you ask the moms over the years, they still remember the puppets and the button game that we played together. Q: Has anything surprised you during these story times? A: I’m delighted to see that although the children are so young, they pay attention. Years ago, my puppet Mabel Monkey, who plays with the children, loved the Texas Rangers. When a three-year-old was dressed in an opposing team’s shirt, he told his mom, “Great, now I’m never going to get the button!” We regularly play a button game with our audience where the puppet will look for the button. Q: What would you say to parents who haven’t yet taken their kids to story time? A: Please come and enjoy the experience of storytelling and song. Story time is a great introduction to our library and the world of learning. We can guide you to books that you have fond memories of or start you on a new path of learning. Q: What are some activities in store this summer at the Southlake Public Library? A: So many I can’t list them all! We are pleased to offer Cupcake Wars for the tweens, Friday flicks at 2 p.m. along with art and animal acts for everyone. There are also reading incentives in our summer reading program. Q: Anything else you’d like to share? A: Who knew when I started reading to my own children many years ago that it would lead to a career for mentoring many other generations of readers? Often parents will share how their children are in college, and they credit the Southlake Public Library for some of their success. It’s a privilege to be labeled “Ms. Elizabeth, the heart of our library.” I’m honored to be part of this great community.
