If you need a tent or other outdoor gear to withstand the elements and approximately 87 million Black Friday shoppers this year, you would be wise to plan accordingly. Outdoor and fitness retailer Recreational Equipment Incorporated (REI) has announced it will be closed on Black Friday. Locations across the country, including its newest Southlake location, will not be participating in the symbolic starter pistol of the holiday season. In stark contrast to its competition, the company states on its website, “REI believes that being outside makes our lives better. That’s why this Black Friday, we’re closing all 143 of our stores and paying our employees to head outside.” It may be an unprecedented move in retail, but as the pendulum swings away from the discount decathlons of Christmases past, REI’s gambit should come as no surprise. The company’s dedicated digital campaign #OptOutside urges consumers to take part in activities outside of the retail box—and I believe this is a step in the right direction. Enjoying the great outdoors is a yearlong perk when you live in Texas. Whether you are exploring area parks or attending the annual Home for the Holidays Tree Lighting, there are no shortage of opportunities to get out as a family. This month, our calendar is full with seasonal events guaranteed to get you in the spirit—without the checkout line. And for those who want to get into the holiday spirit by giving back, this month Southlake Style explores the gifts of the season as given through various charitable organizations. From delivering meals to the elderly, smiles to children or a loving home to a furry friend, we’ve prepared a list of worthy local organizations that could benefit from your generosity. The generosity doesn’t stop there, though. For many in the area, the best way to give back is to become a member of the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). We got to meet several dedicated mothers and fathers in Southlake who share their talents and receive so much more in return. Our kids are noticing—and learning to give back in their own ways. All grown up, former Carroll Dragon Cammie Avers shares her voice and her uplifting message as part of the Christian pop duo Kaleidoscope. Flip to page 29 to see our cover story on the inspiring songstress from Southlake. Part publicity stunt, part real-life reaction to the times, I’ll admit REI is on the right path— outdoors or in, finding new and constructive ways to enjoy the holidays is where the true spirit of the season lies.

Yours in Southlake Style,

MASTER OF NONE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY PART 2 IN THEATERS NOVEMBER 20

A War to End All Wars Although Hunger Games’ fans might be mourning the end of the Katniss era, there’s no excuse to miss part two of last year’s series finale, Mockingjay. Part one brought us to the brink of war between the people of Panem and President Snow (Donald Sutherland). And in part two, Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), along with the team from District 13, enter into what becomes the final Hunger Games—a war to end Snow’s tyranny for good.

CARROLL CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS HEAD TO STATE The Carroll girls and boys Varsity Cross Country teams advanced to the State Championship race after qualifying at the Class 6A Region I Meet in Lubbock last month. For the fifth consecutive year, the boy’s team captured first place and a state meet bid, and for the 19th consecutive year, the Lady Dragons earned a spot in the championship state race. Head coach Justin Leonard said in a press release, “We are pleased with our performances at the Region I-6A meet. Our goal for the regional meet is to advance and be ready to run our best race at the state meet and I believe we have achieved that. It’s an accomplishment for the boys to win five regional titles in a row and for the girls to qualify for the state meet 19 years in a row.” The Southlake Carroll Cross Country Varsity teams will compete November 7 at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock, Texas, in the State Meet.

MICHAEL COX SELECTED FOR U.S. JUNIOR INDOOR LACROSSE TEAM U.S. Indoor Lacrosse (USIL) announced the roster and complete coaching staff for the U.S. Junior Indoor Lacrosse Team, which competed in the 2015 U19 Indoor Lacrosse Challenge in Six Nations, Ontario, Canada, in September. The roster was narrowed down from hundreds of lacrosse players. Michael Cox, a 2015 Carroll grad and Southlake native, was the only player selected to play for Team USA outside the Northeast. Cox was a four-year varsity letterman for the Southlake Dragons. Over the past several summers, Cox has played for Blackwolf, a select team based in Washington D.C., and Texas United, a select team from the DFW area. This fall, Cox entered Siena College in Albany, New York, as a freshman to play Division 1 lacrosse for the Saints. “The chance to represent the USA at this elite level is the ultimate honor in lacrosse,” said USIL President and GM Graham D’Alvia in a press release.

SOUTHLAKE BOY SCOUT TROOP 168 RECEIVED SPECIAL RECOGNITION Mayor Laura Hill officially designated September 1, 2015, as Southlake Boy Scout Troop 168’s day for its ongoing service to the community. For the past five years, the troop has been actively involved in placing flags around the family park in Southlake Town Square. The first display started on July 3, 2010, and the troop has raised and lowered the flags on major holidays ever since as directed by the City of Southlake. “The opportunity for our troop to carry out this service is very important to [us]. Scouting is about teaching our young men an appreciation of responsibility to others,” said Hector Reyes, Scoutmaster. “While we routinely engage in community service projects, it’s rare to have a chance to do something that impacts a city as a whole and also provides the opportunity to display our patriotism.”

HOMER BUSH RELEASED NEW BOOK Former MLB player and Southlake resident, Homer Bush, released a new book: Hitting Low in the Zone: A New Baseball Paradigm. In the book, Bush shares stories from his playing days with the Padres, Yankees, Blue Jays and Marlins, as well as data on how hitters can experience consistent success at the plate. The Hitting Low in the Zone philosophy details the swing mechanics that are needed to increase power and extra-base hits, teaches hitters how to take back control of each at-bat, and gives hitters a surefire plan when going up to the plate. Watch for our Q&A with Bush, who was a member of the 1998 World Championship New York Yankees team, in next month’s issue.

CARROLL THEATER PERFORMED “YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN” TO PACKED HOUSE It was a ghoulishly good time at Carroll Theater’s production of “Young Frankenstein.” More than 100 Carroll High School and Carroll Middle School theater, choir, orchestra, tech and crew members brought the exciting, family-friendly event to the stage October 29 through November 1. The “Young Frankenstein” experience included a “Classic Horror Movie” Haunted House, a Senior Night and a Trunk-or-Treat in the Fine Arts parking lot. The production marked the Carroll directorial debut of Ms. Jamie Pringle who joins Director Roald Marinsen in his 11th year with Carroll Theater.

CARROLL MIDDLE SCHOOL FCA PARTICIPATED IN CHICK-FIL-A RACE SERIES On September 12, members of Carroll Middle School’s (CMS) Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) hit the pavement for fellowship, fun and some early-morning exercise. The group participated in the Chick-fil-A Connect Race Series of Keller, which included a 5K race and 1-mile fun run benefitting FCA, a non-denominational Christian sports ministry. Zach Sellers, coach and outdoor education teacher, founded the CMS chapter of FCA in 2013. He coordinated the event, which drew 20 CMS students, former students and parents, and raised nearly $900 for FCA. “It’s a privilege to be able to teach and lead by focusing on FCA’s four core values: integrity, serving, teamwork and excellence,” says Sellers. “The Chickfil-A Race Series was a great way to get the group together and have a positive impact on the community. I encourage everyone – not just athletes – to check out FCA.”

MIRACLE LEAGUE’S INAUGURAL SEASON OFF TO A GREAT START September 24 marked the official opening day for Miracle League of Southlake. A grand-opening ceremony commemorated the occasion before the first games got underway. More than 100 players were grouped into 12 teams based on age and ability. Six minor teams (age 11 and younger) and four major teams (age 12 and older) played on the Miracle Field. Additionally, two competitive teams played on Field 6 adjacent to the Miracle Field. These competitive players played at a higher level with an umpire catching balls and strikes as well as players throwing batters out at first or catching fly balls.

TEXAS HEALTH SOUTHLAKE HOSTED GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY In September, Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Southlake hosted a groundbreaking ceremony to commemorate its 5,300-square-foot expansion. The addition will be connected to the existing 46,300-square-foot hospital and will include six observation beds and the conversion of an underutilized procedure room into an inpatient bed. Construction is underway and anticipated completion is during the first quarter of 2016. Citing the need to meet demand for healthcare services from Southlake and surrounding communities, hospital President Traci Bernard, RN, said the expansion will not only create muchneeded space, but create better efficiencies and an improved patient, physician and employee experience. “This project is much needed due to the growing need for the highest quality of healthcare in our community, and has been thoughtfully designed to complement our existing facility. We are very excited that our hospital will be able to provide even more healthcare services for our patients,” Bernard said in a press release. BRIO TUSCAN GRILLE DELIVERED FOOD TO LOCAL FIRE, POLICE STATIONS Here’s a way to brighten someone’s Labor Day: Treat them to some fresh Italian food. Each year, Brio Tuscan Grille celebrates the holiday by bringing some of the restaurant’s finest Tuscan-inspired fare to some of Southlake’s finest at local fire and police stations. Michelle Kapin, Special Events Coordinator, hand-delivered the Labor Day cuisine. THE PARKVIEW RESIDENCES OFF TO IMPRESSIVE START Southlake Town Square’s first condominium project, The Parkview Residences, was launched in late June of this year and is already 35 percent sold, according to a press release. Luxury condominium sales in Texas have seen record growth, with sales in Dallas and Fort Worth up 20 percent over previous years. The attraction of low-maintenance, upscale urban living is drawing young professionals and empty nesters to trade in their detached homes for new, high-end condominium developments like The Parkview Residences. “The Parkview Residences are in a compelling location,” said Frank Bliss, President of Cooper and Stebbins, the developer behind Southlake Town Square. “Integrated into the historic Brownstone District, The Residences will become part of the neighborhood while at the same time being just steps away from all that Town Square has to offer.”

DEL FRISCO’S GRILLE SOUTHLAKE DONATED TO TEXAS RANGERS BASEBALL FOUNDATION Del Frisco’s Grille (DFG) knows how to do burgers. It also knows how to turn those burgers into a way to give back to the community. In May, North Texas locations of DFG celebrated National Burger Month with something called the Craft Burger Wars. DFG locations in Southlake, Dallas and Ft. Worth competed against each other to sell the most unique, location-specific burgers, with $1 of each burger sale going to a local charity chosen by the restaurant. In August, Del Frisco’s Grille Southlake’s General Manager Gemma Brady and Executive Chef Aaron Henschen presented Executive Director Karin Morris with a check for $700 for the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation. The winnings will be used by the foundation to improve the lives of children within the DFW community and provide funding for youth baseball and education programs.

N

ovember is a time for giving back and giving thanks, but for the Southlake parents who volunteer tirelessly on Parent Teacher Organizations (PTOs), giving back isn’t limited to the fall season; it’s a labor of love all year long. PTO parents invest countless hours in their communities and schools all for the benefit of children. We caught up with a few of these moms and dads to learn what drives them to get involved with the PTO. Susan Berlew is a stay-at-home mom with two children who enjoys traveling, baking, playing tennis and spending as much time with her family as she can. Running a house and raising children certainly keeps Berlew on her toes, but for the past five years, she has carved out time to volunteer for the PTO at Carroll Elementary School (CES).

B

ounding into the little chapel on the grounds of White’s Chapel United Methodist Church (UMC), an iced coffee in hand, Cammie Avers exudes happiness. She’s stylish in a long-sleeve, blue tunic dress and gray suede ankle boots. “Everything I’m wearing is from Altar’d State. They styled me for the photo shoot today,” she beams. Avers is talkative, upbeat and in disbelief at all the attention she’s getting. “I’m humbled that anything I could offer the world would be worth writing about,” she gushes, taking a seat at the piano in the corner of the chapel. A Southlake native and Carroll grad, Avers is part of the Christian pop duo, Kaleidoscope, along with her best friend, Natalie Brown. The duo has traveled all over the world, including stops right here in Avers’ hometown. Kaleidoscope performed at Oktoberfest last month before jetting to the United Kingdom to lead worship at a youth conference. In the spring, Kaleidoscope will perform at the much-anticipated Girls of Grace Tour, a nationwide event founded in 2002 by Christian-music sensation, Point of Grace. The tour is geared toward teen girls and their moms, and includes live performances and worship from some of the industry’s biggest artists “I am so excited about the tour,” Avers says. “To share the stage with Point of Grace and to travel around the country telling thousands of girls that God has an amazing plan for them is a dream come true.” We visited with Avers to find out what life is like as part of an up-and-coming musical duo, how she got her start and what’s next for the Southlake songstress.

Getting Her Start Like a happy songbird, Avers has long been chirping. Her parents say she’s been singing since before she could talk. Her musical career began with yodeling in cowboy boots and belting out old-time country songs at opries all over Texas. Avers traveled with the Texas Girls’ Choir, performed in show choir at Carroll and helped lead worship at White’s Chapel UMC. “It was a bunch of little performances here and there that ultimately led me to want to do music for the rest of my life,” she says. After graduating from Carroll in 2007, Avers headed to Nashville to attend Belmont University, the largest Chris-

30

tian university in Tennessee. The school boasts a number of famous musical alumni including Steven Curtis Chapman, Brad Paisley and Trisha Yearwood. Belmont is where she met Brown, the other half of Kaleidoscope. The two roommates became fast friends, writing songs together and chatting about their aspirations of reaching people through music. “It wasn’t until after college that we realized our dreams were so similar that it would make no sense to pursue the same thing apart from each other,” says Avers. “Who wouldn’t want to work with their best friend? We love doing music and ministry as a team.” One of the first songs Avers and Brown wrote together is called “Kaleidoscope.” A lyric from the chorus goes like this: “like a kaleidoscope set in motion, He’s making beauty out of the broken.” When Avers’ younger sister, Quinn, suggested Kaleidoscope as a potential band name, it stuck. “That lyric is exactly the message we want to convey – that God is able to make beautiful things out of our broken mess,” Avers says. “We love the idea of all these little pieces coming together to make a picture that is bigger and more beautiful than we can imagine on our own.” The duo admires artists such as Natalie Grant, Britt Nicole, Bethel and Hillsong Worship. “And, let’s be real, we’re also huge Taylor Swift fans,” Avers laughs. She also counts CeCe Winans, the 10-time Grammy Award-winning gospel singer who has sold more than 12 million records worldwide, among her greatest inspirations. But Avers doesn’t just listen to Winans’ music from afar; she is personal friends with the singer. Winans and her husband even served as pastors at Avers’ wedding. “CeCe has been a huge influence on me as a person and an artist,” Avers says. “She is a woman of integrity who puts her family first and has really taken me under her wing in so many ways.”

31

Music With a Message Kaleidoscope released three of their songs as singles last year and another single earlier in 2015 before releasing their self-titled debut EP in September. The seven melodies are catchy and singable, similar to what you’d hear if you tuned in to a Christian contemporary music station. Avers’ favorite song to perform is Kaleidoscope’s “Walk Beside You.” She and Brown wrote the song about their siblings who have suffered with anxiety and depression. “Sometimes, writing a song is a long process and we would get hung up on finding words that rhyme and perfecting the melody,” says Avers. “This song took us about an hour to write because we felt like it was coming straight from our hearts into a song.” For Avers, that’s what it’s all about: using music to speak to people. And the people are listening. The duo has garnered thousands of fans, called “Team Kaleidoscope,” and it outfits those fans in branded merchandise such as t-shirts and headbands available at KaleidoscopeDuo.com. Avers’ dream of reaching people through song has become a reality. Kaleidoscope travels all over the world for ministry and music, allowing Avers to connect with people on a global stage. “One of the coolest things about traveling is that we get to meet so many different people and hear their stories and struggles,” she says. “I love interacting with people and hearing how in some small way our music has impacted them.” With the Girls of Grace Tour on the horizon in 2016 and several other shows on the books, Kaleidoscope has plenty of opportunity to connect with others. This means a busy schedule, but that’s okay with Avers. She embraces life on the road. She’s even learned to enjoy living out of a suitcase. “I feel like I can put together an outfit much quicker,” she laughs.

Knowing What’s Important Avers is no stranger to travel, though she hasn’t always journeyed for music. She’s been on 11 mission trips with White’s Chapel UMC, visiting poverty-ridden locales in Guatemala, Mexico, Haiti, Botswana, Africa, the United Kingdom and even here in the United States. Each experience has been different. When you go on a mission trip to help those who need it the most, you don’t leave the same person, she says. Though the people she encountered faced intense poverty, one thing stood out to her: They were still joyous.

32

“Money isn’t everything. God is, and these trips have taught me that,” Avers says. Wherever her travels take her, Avers stays true to her Dragon roots. She attended Carroll ISD from first grade at Durham Elementary all the way to her graduation. She was class president, Homecoming princess, a part of Emerald Belles as a freshman, and she was also involved in show choir, theater, Spanish club and key club. “I don’t know how to not be busy, and I think that started in high school,” she says. “I love being a Dragon and I’m proud to protect the tradition wherever I go.” Avers married her high school sweetheart, Steven, who was a catcher for Carroll Baseball. The two met in gifted-and-talented English class their sophomore year. After graduation, Avers pursued music while Steven pursued a medical career. He’s now a doctor at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, the city in which the couple resides. Though she enjoys hiking, going to the beach and exploring different parts of California with her husband, there are pieces of Southlake that Avers misses. For starters, she says there’s nothing like the city’s small-town feel and welcoming culture. And, surprisingly, she also misses the Texas weather. It doesn’t feel like summer in California because it doesn’t get hot enough, she says. Returning, if even for a few days, for a hometown performance makes Avers smile. “I’m always proud to bring Natalie to my local shows because they are always the best,” says Avers. “She makes fun of my Texas pride, but who can blame me? Texans are the best.” As we visit at White’s Chapel UMC, the place where Avers composed many songs and where she worked as a worship leader for nearly three years, she feels grateful that she gets to do her favorite thing on earth. With her songs, Avers says that, more than anything, she wants to express that “God loves us and is for us, and He has a plan for our lives that is bigger and brighter than we ever could have imagined.” How sweet it is to be living the message behind the melodies.

LOOKING FOR A WAY TO GIVE BACK? HERE’S HOW YOU CAN TAKE ACTION IN YOUR COMMUNITY THROUGH VOLUNTEERING.

W

e often take for granted the support we are given from family and friends in times of need or even during joyful occasions such as the holidays. Putting food on your table or clothes on your back, or even garnering opportunities for education, all become second nature to us. But for many families, through no fault of their own, obtaining these basic necessities becomes a struggle. It is through a number of local nonprofit organizations and community outreach programs that these families are given the chance to live a normal life and even thrive. Learning how and where to allocate your resources to aid these nonprofits can be confusing. You may have in mind a specific cause you’d like to contribute to—education or animal shelters—or you might just want to start with the basics. Whatever the case may be we’ve put together a list of notable area organizations in need of volunteers, whether you’d like to contribute financially or you prefer to get handson with your giving. Grapevine Relief And Community Exchange (GRACE)

Community Storehouse CommunityStorehouse.org Dedicated to the education and wellbeing of children, Community Storehouse works with children of families at or below the poverty level in the Keller, Northwest and Carroll Independent School Districts. For more than 33 years, Community Storehouse has provided educational programs for school children of all ages. Whether it is through tutoring, literacy help or even college preparedness, the organization hopes to end the cycle of poverty one child at a time. In addition to meeting educational needs, Community Storehouse provides nutritional assistance to kids during the school year and the summer. Interested in supporting the enrichment and wellbeing of today’s youth? According to Megan Stiller, Resource Development Lead for Community Storehouse, the best way to help the nonprofit is by hosting clothing drives, book drives and food drives. Bringing together family and friends to raise awareness and provide for kids in need is a great way for individuals to promote the mission of Community Storehouse.

GRACEGrapevine.org Grapevine-based GRACE is a nonprofit relief agency that provides food, clothing, financial assistance and other vital necessities to individuals and families struggling with a limited income or recent emergency. While the organization is extremely active throughout the year, the holiday season brings unique opportunities for GRACE to help families during what can be a stressful time. Food distribution during Thanksgiving and Christmas, hosting the Christmas Cottage and continuing to meet the general needs of families are the top three agenda items for GRACE at the end of the year. And according to Executive Director Shonda Schaefer, this is the time of year when the most volunteers are needed. Interested in sharing your time and treasures within the community? The mission of GRACE is twofold. Not only is the organization focused on providing for families, it serves as a vehicle for those to give back with their blessings. Whatever your talents may be there is a place to put them to good use at GRACE. Currently, individuals are needed to distribute food and provide donations for the Christmas Cottage, which serves as a place for families to “shop” for Christmas presents for their children at no cost.

Metroport Meals on Wheels MetroportMOW.org If you’d like to narrow down your efforts to lighting up someone’s life with a warm meal and smile, Metroport Meals on Wheels (MWOW) is ready to enlist you. MWOW has served the North Texas area for 35 years with programs crafted to meet the needs of the community. Volunteering for the nonprofit organization is as simple as applying to be a driver to deliver meals to seniors and other individuals not able to prepare their own meals. There’s no need to be Betty Crocker—MWOW serves meals prepared by local restaurants and grocers. However, you should be prepared to make friends. Often times these individuals have no family close by, and simply spending time with them and visiting can feed their soul. For more information about MWOW, visit MetroportMOW.org.

Table Tops TableTopsSouthlake.com Another organization dedicated to making life better for children who may be experiencing the aftermath of a life uprooted is TableTops Southlake. As the name suggests, themed tabletops are decorated with gift baskets and gift packages at the organization’s main fundraising event each year. The November luncheon raises funds to directly support the Gatehouse Community in Grapevine, which houses women and children in crisis. Raising money to purchase bicycles for each child at the Gatehouse and making sure Gatehouse families are able to enjoy Christmas are just two ways TableTops uses the funds. Interested in getting involved with TableTops Southlake? Visit the organization’s website, TableTopsSouthlake.com.

Operation Kindness OperationKindness.org Operation Kindness cares for homeless cats and dogs in a no-kill environment until each is adopted. Located in Carrollton, Operation Kindness is the largest no-kill animal shelter in North Texas. With a full medical facility on site, Operation Kindness is able to treat any animal abandoned, brought to them as a surrender, or one that has found its way to the shelter by other means. As a nonprofit organization, the shelter receives no government funding. And with a full-time staff of only 18, it is easy to see why outside assistance is imperative. Interested in showing some love to cats and dogs? The main idea CEO Jim Hanophy wants potential volunteers to know is that the atmosphere is hopeful at Operation Kindness. Because the final outcome for each animal is adoption, you’ll be giving your time to provide care for animals as they wait for their forever homes. There are different levels of work at the shelter, and you can start as early as age seven under parental supervision. Training is given at every level. Needs of the shelter include having volunteers socialize with the animals, which includes walking the dogs, assessing the animals once they are brought in and becoming a foster family for an animal until they are adopted.

Interested in promoting the importance of education? The main fundraiser for CEF each year is the Culinary Celebration, and while donations are often the main treasures given for the event, the organization is still in need of volunteers who can provide their time. Serving on the organization’s event board, organizing the donations for the silent auction or even using your time to go out and procure items for the auction, there are a variety of ways you can help.

ConnecTeach

Carroll Education Foundation SouthlakeCEF.org Meeting the needs of the Carroll Independent School District through the creation and distribution of resources to benefit students is the mission of the Carroll Education Foundation (CEF). Formed 19 years ago, the organization has since raised more than $1 million to enrich, expand and protect the educational resources at CISD. Whether the organization is providing grants for classroom projects and innovation, or giving scholarships to students for different areas of excellence, CEF is using its resources to help enhance the already exceptional education Kitchen the district provides. ConnecTeach.org While keeping your efforts close to home may seem like the right choice, you can help locally and internationally at the same time. CISD students, teachers and schools, through the nonprofit ConnecTeach, are reaching out to their counterparts across the globe in places such as India. Headquartered in Southlake, ConnecTeach is dedicated to using resources from the community, most importantly teachers, to build relationships across the world. What started as a mission to meet the underserved education needs in the slums of India turned into a variety of projects that give educators the means to improve children’s lives one class at a time. Not only are educators connecting with one another, but local students are spending time to impart the importance of education on their peers overseas. Luxury Meets Comfort THE AUDI-INSPIRED LUFT ARMCHAIR.

SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

ne can only endure so many remote control compartments on a single armchair. Let’s think outside of the large box an ultimate recliner would arrive in and move on to a more modern piece of furniture that combines both luxury and comfort. The Luft armchair is a little piece of Audi heaven to be enjoyed in your living room rather than on the open road. Designed by Head of Volkswagen Group Design, Walter Maria de Silva, the Luft begs more of an introduction than an explanation of benefits. de Silva, who’s an Italian car designer by trade, oversees all Volkswagen Group passenger car brands, including Audi. So it was a natural fit for de Silva to collaborate with the Audi Concept Studio in the design process. Premium furniture producer Poltrona Frau was then brought in to manufacture the chair. Featuring a curved, aluminum frame that traces the contour of the chair from its back to its feet, which also serves as the base, the Luft’s seating piece seems to float in the frame. In designing the Luft armchair, de Silva wanted to create a floating effect, and in fact the armchair is named for the German word for air.

Polyester and polyurethane foam are used for padding underneath the leather on the seating piece, and a beech wood frame is inserted in the center to which an elastic-belt spring system is attached. Known not only for its aesthetics, the Pelle Frau leather upholstery is also unmatched in tactility, making the Luft as comfortable as it is luxurious. The leather upholstery is available in a variety of colors, and the frame can either be painted or shine in chrome. But, of course, the cost of luxury in the world of furniture designed by such an iconic car brand is a bit more than what you would pay for an ultimate recliner from the local big box store. Be warned; you might want to sit down for this. The Luft price tag is in the $4,500-$4,800 range and is available to order from most high-end furniture boutiques. Don’t be fooled by its simplicity. What the Luft armchair lacks in bells and whistles, it makes up for in comfort. While you may not have a side pocket for the television remote or a cup holder for your favorite game-watching brew, you do have the bragging rights to owning a living room armchair designed by Audi. And who wouldn’t want that?

A Look at Southlake’s Parents

By Sydni Walke r

The “Rule the School” fun draiser is underway at Rockenbaugh Elementar y.

MEET THE MOMS AND DADS AT THE HELM OF SOME OF SOUTHLAKE’S PARENT TEACHER ORGANIZATIONS (PTOS).

N

ovember is a time for giving back and giving thanks, but for the Southlake parents who volunteer tirelessly on Parent Teacher Organizations (PTOs), giving back isn’t limited to the fall season; it’s a labor of love all year long.

When Berlew and her family moved to Southlake, she wanted be more involved in the community. She enjoyed it so much that she is starting her first year as PTO President for CES. “I initially decided to volunteer to meet people since we were new to the community,” Berlew says. “Now, I enjoy helping in my kids’ classes and supporting our teachers. As a bonus, I’ve met some great people and friends by getting involved.” One of the perks of volunteering at CES is getting the inside scoop about what is happening at the elementary school. It’s great for Berlew since both of her children are enrolled at CES — Jameson is in fourth grade and Bennett is in third grade. The best part? She gets to be there to contribute to the success of the events and help make sure all the children at CES have a good time.

Lori Davidso n, Michelle Moore and Berlew pa Susan use for a p hoto at Car Elementar roll y’s Back to School Fam ily Fun Night at Skate To wn. “It is incredibly rewarding to volunteer at my kids’ school,” Berlew says. “They spend so much time there, and it’s important to support those excellent teachers who are helping shape our children. I feel fortunate to live in such a great community with wonderful schools. I enjoy contributing, even if it’s in a small way.” Another stay-at-home mom loves volunteering for the PTO, but she does it at Rockenbaugh Elementary School. Diana Fancher loves to vacation, read a good book, and stay involved at Rockenbaugh, where her daughter, Kate, is now a third-grade student. She first volunteered for the PTO when Kate was in kindergarten, and now she is starting her second year as Rockenbaugh Elementary PTO President. “Since I only have one child, volunteering in the PTO allows me to cross paths and become friends with parents of children in different grades and even at different schools,” says Fancher. “I also enjoy getting to know the administration and teachers who are molding the minds of my child’s generation.” Fancher’s favorite part about volunteering is seeing the difference volunteers make in teachers’ work lives. “A school’s PTO is one of the happiest places you could ever imagine volunteering. I love seeing the difference we make and how we can help with some day-to-day activities to free up time for teachers to focus on educating our little ones. Your efforts, whether volunteering time or monetary donations, are greatly appreciated and do make a big difference.”

Dedication Through the Years Stacy Saxton is no stranger to Southlake, and no stranger to volunteering either. Her family has been in Southlake since it only had a Dairy Queen — in other words, for 19 years. Before leaving work to stay at home with her daughter, Audrey, Saxton worked at Southwest Airlines for 16 years as a gate agent and then in the Ground Operations department where she settled baggage service claims and traveled throughout the country doing quality control. Now Saxton enjoys traveling with her family, cooking and baking, writing, and World War II history. This fall will be the start of Saxton’s tenth year serving on the Executive Board of PTO, where she is currently President of the PTO for both Carroll High School and Carroll Senior High, which both fall under the same umbrella. She started volunteering when Audrey was in second grade at Johnson Elementary, and now Audrey is a junior at Carroll Senior High. “I started volunteering because I have always enjoyed being involved,” Saxton says. “I love being in the middle of things and having a voice in my community. Volunteering at your child’s school is a wonderful way to know what is going on. This is important because many parents know that kids start sharing less and less with their parents as they get older.” Part of the importance of volunteering is setting a precedent for kids to follow. “My favorite quote is: ‘Don’t be part of the problem, be part of the solution.’ I think that parents should be good examples to their kids by volunteering and letting our children know that you should volunteer because it is the right thing to do.” Whether you are new to the community or have spent over a decade here, volunteering can be a great way to meet new people and give back to the schools. “I think there is a huge misperception about being involved with the PTO. I can promise that it is not a clique. All that is required is the desire to work for the betterment of your children,” says Saxton.

Everybody line up! The PTO at Rockenbaugh Elementary brought Kona Ice to the school.

Dads Love Being Involved, Too No two volunteers at Southlake schools are exactly alike, and they certainly are not all moms; Southlake dads are just as active in their kids’ lives. The perfect example is Jeff Govek, who runs the Rockenbaugh Dad’s Club. Govek owns a consulting company that specializes in controls and automation, and remote monitoring of physical assets. When he is not at work, he loves spending time with his two children, eight-year-old Riley and six-year-old Christopher, road and mountain cycling, reading, and staying involved with Dad’s Club. Dad’s Club is an easy way for dads to become more involved with their children’s education and to contribute to the school through raising money for projects or contributing their time. “Dad’s Club is a great way for me to become involved in Rockenbaugh and to help support the teachers and staff,” Govek says. “It is also a way for dads to get together and socialize, and to interact with other Rockenbaugh families.” Govek enjoys all the events Dad’s Club gets to put on for parents and children of Rockenbaugh. Last year for Career Day at Rockenbaugh, the Dad’s Club hung collegiate flags down the length of the main hallway to encourage kids to think about college. Recently they organized a Rough Riders baseball outing for Rockenbaugh families to hang out and get to know each other. This year, Dad’s Club is planning on growing the organization to allow them to contribute on a larger scale. “The reward is in seeing a real, tangible impact on the success of the school and on the kids – especially the kids,” Govek says. “That is the ultimate goal of all of this: to raise healthy, happy and successful children.” The most important thing Govek thinks parents should know is that Southlake schools have thrived because of the active participation of volunteers. “One of the things that make a school system successful is parental involvement.

Whether through an organization such as the PTO or Dad’s Club or through individual initiative, the parents and the community have a huge impact on the school’s success,” he says. “No contribution of time, money or effort is too small. Southlake is proud of its schools, and rightly so. The community has done an amazing job making CISD successful. It is the continued community involvement going forward that will ensure that CISD continues to excel.” Without the dedication and participation of parent volunteers in Southlake schools, children’s success would not be possible. When it comes down to it, this is all that really matters.

Stacy Saxton has served on the PTO’s Executive Board for 10 years.

Brunch in All Its Majesty GASTROPUB MEETS ECLECTIC SOCIAL HOUSE AT HENRY’S MAJESTIC.

HENRY’S MAJESTIC 4900 McKinney Ave., Dallas 469.893.9400 HenrysMajestic.com

60 • NOV 15

A neon purple “Majestic” sign beckons Dallasgoers into a popular brunch spot on McKinney Avenue in Uptown. Henry’s Majestic boasts two full bars, one visible from the unassuming entrance, where a few young adults chatter in front of a “prescriptions” sign. With antique wallpaper, Edison light bulbs dangling from the ceiling and unique “found” items in every nook and cranny, the Henry’s atmosphere is a paradox. It’s industrial, yet rustic. The space is nearly 5,000 square feet, but it feels quaint. It gives off a Prohibition-era vibe, but the patio is bustling, cocktail in every hand. Henry’s is a venture from the folks behind the successful Dallas café Bread Winners and acclaimed chef Roe DiLeo. You may have seen her on Season 13 of Gordon Ramsay’s “Hell’s Kitchen” or most recently on Food Network’s “BBQ Blitz” with Eddie Jackson. You may have even tasted her food if you stopped by The Libertine Bar in Dallas just over a year ago.

“Leaving the Libertine was difficult for me – after five years it was definitely like home – but I needed to expand beyond bar food,” DiLeo says. The Libertine taught her some valuable lessons she’s brought with her to Henry’s, which opened for business last October: know your customers and be consistent. With the help of these two mantras, DiLeo has quickly turned Henry’s into a dining destination made of more than just bar food. Featuring live music on the weekends, a dog-friendly outdoor patio with a pool table and fireplace, Henry’s is a hot spot for nearby college students and Dallas foodies alike to be seen grabbing morning brunch or hanging out until 2 a.m. While Henry’s attracts many different types of people, DiLeo says, they all have one thing in common: they know their food and drink. One way (read: the right way) to start off your experience at Henry’s is to opt for the Sparkling

Bar. The waitress fills your glass with your choice of Aria Brut Cava, Riondo Prosecco, Zonin Sparkling Rose or J Roget Champagne and then ushers you to a side table where you’re free to add house-made cordials, seasonal fruits and fresh juices. If you want to stay seated, the brunch cocktail menu is no disappointment. Not for the faint of palate, drinks by barman Alex Fletcher (The People’s Last Stand, Victor Tangos) push the envelope with bold flavors and unlikely pairings – the Sunday Fix is comprised of freshly shucked oyster, mescal spritz, ponzu, basil and sriracha. The brunch menu is a mix of elevated pub fare, variations of breakfast favorites and downright eccentric offerings. One of the most unique is a Texan twist on pho, with brisket, Akaushi flank, soft-boiled egg and rice noodles. And we can’t fail to mention the celebrated Bone Marrow Spiked Burger made with Akaushi beef, bacon and farm egg. With two sections of the menu emphasizing shared plates, our party first shared the Grilled PBJ and Banana, which was savored all around. Homemade jam, sliced bananas and creamy peanut butter were sandwiched in between warm Tuscan bread. The cold milk on the side was a nice temperature contrast, perfect for dipping. Next, we split Henry’s Shrimp & Grits. It was a burst of unique flavors – hot sauce, chives and bleu cheese surrounded the large shrimp in a hot skillet. With our taste buds satiated with both sweet and spicy, we ordered our main courses. A favorite was the Rose Peach French Toast. Thick, warm French toast was soaked in rose wine and served with peach compote and honey cream, which our fork scooped up before every bite. The whole dish was sprinkled with sliced almonds and was the perfect balance between indulgently sweet and light. Next time, we’ll have to try DiLeo’s favorite, the Al Pastor Pork Benedict. “It is the most involved dish and hardest to keep consistent, so I like the challenge,” she says. “The crispy arepas have to be fried perfectly; the lime crema needs to be seasoned correctly; the eggs need to poached just right; the cotija cheese and garnish need to be fresh. When all of these things come together, they result in an amazing, flavorful brunch dish.” While her food may be renowned, DiLeo is most proud of something else entirely: her staff. She says most have been at the restaurant since it opened and truly care about the success of Henry’s. It’s this come-in-early, leave-late attitude that guests sense upon walking through the doors. “I want all of our guests to feel at home and taken care of when they are at Henry’s,” DiLeo says. “I often tell my staff that they should feel like we’re throwing a party for our friends every night.” That’s a good way to describe an experience at Henry’s. Or, as its website promises: “…Great ideas will be forged, enemies will become friends, bonds will be strengthened and memories will be made” all in a comfortable, sophisticated setting with good food, strong drink and genuine charm.

Healthy in a Hurry Snap Kitchen offers up fast food for the health-conscious. If you’re health-minded and want a quick, nutritious meal, zip over to Snap Kitchen in Colleyville. The store, which is situated across from Whole Foods, has a simple concept: Walk in, select your chefmade, dietician-approved meal, and be on your way. You can heat it and eat it there (there’s a microwave along with a few window-side seats), but most folks grab the food and go. Snap Kitchen is all about “fast food for foodies,” but you won’t feel rushed here. The vibe is relaxed and welcoming. When we stopped in, a staff member happily showed us how to navigate the refrigerated case, which was stocked with a colorful array of containers in various sizes. If words like “organic quinoa” and “consciously sourced produce” make your heart pound a little faster, you’re going to like the offerings at Snap Kitchen. The place promises “you’ll never find a speck of white flour in our house” and that it uses “no butter ever.”

SNAP KITCHEN 4712 Colleyville Blvd., Colleyville

Whether this thrills you or terrifies you, you’re bound to find something appealing on the menu. It’s chockfull of good-for-you fare that spans the spectrum of dietary requirements: vegetarian, vegan, paleo, dairy-free, carb conscious, sodium conscious and more. There are plentiful options for breakfast, lunch and dinner, along with healthy snacks and cold-pressed juices. We were in the mood for a smoothie, so we plucked a Chai Cashew Milkshake from the shelf. All the ready-to-go meals were tempting, from the Spinach and Goat Cheese Scramble in the breakfast section to the Crispy Scottish Salmon in the dinner division. It was the Spaghetti Turkey Bolognese that beckoned to us from its BPA-free container, so we grabbed a small portion (most meals are offered in medium and large sizes as well) and headed back to the office. A sticker on the microwavable container provided nutrition information and heating instructions. In less than two minutes, we were twirling a forkful of this hearty combination of ground turkey, gluten-free brownrice spaghetti, sautéed mushrooms, basil, marinara and Parmesan cheese. It was surprisingly filling with just the right amount of zing. We finished the meal with a few sips of the Chai Cashew Milkshake, a creamy concoction of cashews, filtered water, vanilla bean, dates and a sprinkling of spices. We can see this becoming a go-to snack when a sweet tooth hits. The menu changes seasonally, so there will always be new freshly prepared meals to tempt your taste buds. Whenever you visit, you can be sure you’re getting wholesome, healthy food that hits the spot. As its website declares, Snap Kitchen truly is “good in every sense of the word.”

Coffee With a Cause RE:defined Coffee House is an inspiring addition to the coffee community.

RE:defined Coffee House 220 N. Main Street, Grapevine

Step into RE:defined Coffee House, and it’s just the kind of cozy, eclectic spot you’d expect to find on Main Street in Grapevine. The space exudes a modern yet homey feel with unique furnishings and interesting textures, from opulent velvet curtains to rustic walls of wood and brick. This is the kind of place that beckons you to grab a latte, get comfy and stay awhile. So, we did. And while we were there, we got to know Katie Coleman, the owner of this ever-soinviting coffee shop that, according to its website, aims to be “not just a coffee house, but a home.” Coleman and her husband opened the shop nearly two years ago. “The vision was to create a space where covenant friendships and family could be birthed organically through people’s love for coffee,” she says. If you want to grab a cup of joe and be on your way, you can certainly do that, but Coleman aims to create an environment in which guests linger – and maybe learn about the drink they’re sipping. “We encourage people to ask us about our coffee,” says Coleman. “It brings us such joy to watch a guest’s palate expand over time and to appreciate the pride we take in each and every cup of coffee.” Nearly everything at RE:defined, from the French Press house coffee to the simple syrups, is made by hand. Even the chocolate used in mochas and hot chocolate is melted in-house by baristas. “Everything is made with a personal touch,” she says. The shop partners with award-winning Avoca Coffee Roasters in Ft. Worth, which roasts each bean for a specific purpose. We love a great cup of coffee, but we tried the Chai Latte on our visit. If ever there was an ideal drink for fall, this is it. It was spicy and aromatic with Bhakti Chai and steamed milk, topped off with a foamy, artful swirl. RE:defined is more than hand-crafted beverages, though; the coffee shop has a philanthropic side. It supports Unlikely Heroes, a nonprofit organization that provides safe homes and restoration to child victims of sex slavery worldwide. The shop hosts fundraisers ranging from in-store concerts to gala events benefitting Unlikely Heroes, which is set to open its first restoration home in the United States. “Love is the Key,” RE:defined’s fall fundraiser, is November 12 at Southlake’s Paradise Cove. “We’re not just a business, but a community of people who are dedicated to fighting and ending human trafficking,” Coleman says. With its warm and welcoming atmosphere, handmade beverages, and its commitment to giving back, RE:defined is the kind of spot where you can grab a cup and a seat, and feel good about it.

Five NYC Stops CONDENSE YOUR BUCKET LIST.

A

four-day weekend in the Big Apple can be an intimidating experience. But we’ve narrowed down the exponential list of “things to do” in New York City to five favorites. One suggestion: Don’t be a straphanger and spend your time riding the subway. You’ll see much more on your trip walking the blocks with native New Yorkers.

Brunch at Broome Street near Thompson We’ve discovered that brunch has become more than just something to do in NYC. It is, in fact, the thing to do. And the city prides itself on the variety of tastes, flavors and atmospheres which make this midmorning course a must do. You can visit for a weekend, a week or even a month and still not sample all the fare around town. We scientifically consulted web list after web list of favorites for brunching, and the one that caught our eye was repeated on most all of the rankings: Chalk Point Kitchen. The food at this NYC favorite is a mix of local, seasonal, sustainable and organic products, according to Chef Joe Isidori. “We take the edge and flavor of the downtown NYC markets and combine them with pristine local products and vegetables in order to help develop our cuisine here at Chalk Point Kitchen.”

With dishes such as Freddy’s Avocado Hash seasoned with lemon and cilantro, and cocktails such as Bloody Marty McFly concocted with too many amazing ingredients to mention here, there is undoubtedly an item for every tourist’s taste. ChalkPointKitchen.com

nyc Stepping Out for a Nightcap Don’t limit your consumption of adult beverages to just a few hours in the middle of the evening; try partaking in a new trend sweeping NYC: whiskey bars. Perfect for opting out of the live music and club scene, enjoying a subtle nightcap at places such as Maysville Food & Bourbon, located on 26th street between 6th and Broadway, is the new drinking trend. With a selection of more than 150 American whiskeys, Maysville is sure to introduce you to a few, new fermented favorites. While the majority of the offerings are available in one- or two-ounce tastes, there are five Maysville fermented favorites you can enjoy in eightor 16-ounce decanters. This short, but well-respected, list includes Wild Turkey Rare Breed and Knob Creek Single Barrel. Cheers! MaysvilleNYC.com

This View Rocks!

Photo courtesy of David Heald © The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, New York

Education on Manhattan’s Upper East Side In 1937, Solomon R. Guggenheim established a foundation for a museum that would forever hold and preserve his collection of non-objective art. Now, with a permanent collection of more than 7,000 artworks that focus on modern and contemporary art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum is the museum that trumps all others in the city. We think you’ll agree this warrants stopping by. We suggest visiting the Kandinsky Gallery exhibition, which is currently on view at the Guggenheim until Spring 2016. To truly understand the value of a visit to the museum, you must appreciate the history behind the exhibits and collections. Vasily Kandinsky, who is considered the pioneer of abstract art, has been linked to history of the museum more than any other twentieth-century painter. The Guggenheim’s collection of Kandinsky’s work began with Solomon’s private holdings in 1937 and now contains more than 150 works by this single artist. Guggenheim.org

Considered to be the “plaza of the people,” 30 Rockefeller Plaza is filled with a variety of shops, boutiques and eateries. But what we found to be most interesting about the building isn’t what was inside, but at the top. Known as the Top of the Rock, the observation deck of the Rockefeller is a three-level observation deck that consists of the 67th, 69th, and 70th floors of the building. The total surface area of all the decks combined is approximately 55,000 square feet. The 70th floor, the uppermost level, is 850 feet above street level and provides a completely open air, unobstructed 360-degree view of New York City and beyond. The upper deck allows for awe-inspiring views of the city’s hustle and bustle during the day, and breathtaking sunsets in the evening. As with most attractions worth visiting in New York City, you must purchase tickets to admire the view. The prices vary depending on the time of day you visit and your age, but range between $25 and $45. Top of the Rock is a great place to reflect on your visit to New York City—and realize that you won’t be able to experience everything the city has to offer in one trip. TopOfTheRockNYC.com

39 Steps East of Broadway

76 • NOV 15

While tourists may have it on their bucket list to see a Broadway production, off-Broadway shows can be of the same caliber. These tickets are often more affordable and seats are often easier to come by. However, don’t confuse a great value for lack of a standing ovation-worthy production. One such off-Broadway show that has garnered the attention of many critics—in a good way—is 39 Steps. Showing at the Union Square Theatre in New York City, which is just “39 steps East of Broadway,” the production is a two-time Tony Award-winning hit comedy. The production is a comic spoof based on the classic movie that itself was based on the novel The 39 Steps by John Buchan. Get ready to laugh and don your big red nose (which is only explained when you see the show). You can join in the fun through the end of December. 39StepsNY.com

Southlake Set Aglow Kick off the season with the Home for the Holidays Tree Lighting.

S

outhlake Town Square. Oh, there’s no place like home for the holidays. Though this sentiment first was penned in a holiday tune back in 1954, it still holds just as true today — more than 60 years later. That’s because home is where you’ll find those who mean the most to you. Can you think of a better place to ring in the holiday season than here at home in Southlake? We certainly can’t. Come together with family, friends, neighbors and your entire community as we turn up the fun at Southlake Town Square for a holiday event you’ll want to make a tradition year after year. Experience the festive atmosphere that includes carolers, crafts, refreshments, live entertainment, four-lane snow hill tubing, photos with Santa, letters to Santa, carriage rides, snowman building and even a Toy & Food Drive to offer a first chance at gift-giving this season. Imagine cozying with a loved one as you rediscover Southlake from a horse-drawn carriage. Or instilling the magic of Christmas in your children with traditions they’ll one day pass along to their own children. It’s all just a part of what it means to be at Home for the Holidays, leading up to the main event of a tree-lighting ceremony at 6:30 p.m. And let’s not forget about the many, many stores to browse while you’re in the Square. Plan carefully, and you could have your holiday shopping finished before your Thanksgiving turkey is even cooked.

The Magic of the Season Catch the world premiere of Becoming Santa Claus.

DETAILS Date: December 4, 6, 9 and 12 Location: Winspear Opera House

inspear Opera House. Ever wonder what’s behind the story of the man in the big red suit? How did he become Santa Claus? Surely he wasn’t always a jolly old man delivering gifts to good boys and girls around the world … or was he? In this world-premiere event, Becoming Santa Claus tells the tale to answer these questions, bringing to life a new family-friendly opera never before told. In his fourth full-length opera, composer Mark Adamo captures the mystery behind Santa, telling it through the talents of The Dallas Opera. The story begins in an Elven kingdom in the Far, Far North, following Prince Clause as he prepares to celebrate his 13th birthday with an elaborate party fit for a future king. However, when a bright star signals a momentous birth, Prince Claus decides to treat the newborn with an array of dazzling gifts — eventually discovering that for all the toys you can create, love is the greatest gift of all. Celebrating the importance of doing random acts of kindness for others, Becoming Santa Claus is a wonderful way to share the spirit of the season with loved ones. Treat yourself to this never-before-seen production, or gift a friend with tickets to experience it. You might just realize the true meaning of the holidays along the way.

ONE OF FOOTBALL’S FINEST DEMARCUS WARE TALKS ABOUT LIFE ON AND OFF THE FIELD.

DeMarcus Ware is a powerhouse. He’s six foot four and 258 pounds. He spent nine seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, becoming the franchise’s all-time leader in quarterback sacks. Now, as a defensive end for the Denver Broncos, Ware (who resides in Southlake) is rounding out a Hall of Fame career. He met Southlake Style’s editor in the heat of summer to talk about his career, his family and what drives him.

SS NEXT DOOR

Q: You’re currently No. 13 on the NFL all-time sacks list with 131 in your career. How does it feel to be so close to having Hall of Fame credentials? A: It’s like a dream come true. I think about the guys I looked up to when I was younger, playing Madden – the Michael Strahans, the Bruce Smiths or the Randy Whites. And now my name is being incorporated with those guys. It’s like I’ve arrived. It feels really good. Q: Is there a quarterback you’ve wanted to sack but haven’t? A: Phillip Rivers. I haven’t sacked him and I’ve played him probably eight or nine times. I sacked him in the pre-season, but that doesn’t count. Now he’s in my division. He’s one of those guys who’s a good quarterback. Just being able to put pressure on him and create some kind of havoc out there. That’s a big goal of mine – just try to get to him this year. Q: What do you do to recharge? A: Spend time with my kids. [It’s great] when I go home and the kids are smiling. They don’t care how many guys I had to hit or what I had to do. I love spending time with them. With my daughter, it’s “let’s go have tea time.” And with my son, it’s “let’s go play airplanes.” For me, that’s my detox time. I also work out at Impact Performance and Fitness to relieve stress. Q: Tell us about your Southlake gym, Impact Performance and Fitness. A: It’s been really interesting to see certain guys prepare for the season. Let’s say a basketball player comes in. You get to see what he’s doing and what kind of workout he has. He’s not going to be in there pumping the weights like me, but you’ll see the more lateral movements and the hand-eye coordination that he uses to prepare for the game. It’s awesome just to be at a good gym. Q: What’s your favorite Cowboys memory? A: Getting drafted. On Draft Day, Bill Parcells calls and says: “Welcome to the Cowboys.” I said, “Oh man! I’m actually going to be a Cowboy!” So I think that was my biggest moment. After all my hard work in high school and college, and then being able to make NFL for the Cowboys.

local impact

Q: What drives you? A: God. I look to God for foundation. The naysayers also drive me – when people say what I can’t do. I let that negativity build into some type of positivity and then let it propel me to where I need to be Q: Do you have a favorite Bible verse or quote? A: One of my favorites is: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” You go through some times in your life, and that’s what you need. You really have to lean on it and let the Word in your life. You can read it all you want to. You can pray all you want to. But the main thing is to live it. Q: You’re involved in a number of youth-focused charities in the DFW area. Why are these causes special to you? A:To me, it’s about giving kids a second chance. A lot of people can’t wake up every morning and have breakfast. They don’t have the opportunity to put on nice clothes. When you give people a second chance, you never know where it’ll take them. Q: Tell us about your kids, Marley (7) and DeMarcus Jr. (4). What are their personalities like? A: They have two different personalities. Marley is calm and relaxed. She’s a girly girl but she likes Batman. She’s the best of both worlds. My son is straight boy. He’s like, “Dad, let’s play airplanes. Look at the Mustang GT!” They’re different but they get along really well. They’re my pride and joy, and they’re what keep me going. Q: What has surprised you about being a dad? A: Responsibility. Some people say you have to be a disciplinarian, but at the end of the day, you just lead by example. A lot of people say, “I want my kid to have what I didn’t have.” I think it’s about how much time you can spend with your kids to let them realize how important [it] is. I’m trying to leave a good legacy for my kids and just keep moving forward. Q: You’re a Southlake resident. What do you enjoy most about this community?

Q: What is Jerry Jones like? A: He’s one of those guys where you look at him and he’s not exactly what you see. He’s a great family guy. Some of his testimonies really strike home.

A: I like the camaraderie around the Southlake area. It’s the same here. You get people coming up to you and saying, “How ya doing today? Do you need anything?” Everyone is welcoming here. It’s a great community.
