confessions of an accidental tourist This month’s cover image takes me back to our very first visit to Southlake. The year was 2004, and I must confess, tourism was the polar opposite of what was on our minds. With two newly minted jobs in North Texas, Nicole and I were anxious and excited in the search to make Southlake our home. Headed west on Southlake Boulevard, we were taken by a similar view of Southlake’s Town Square (sans bathing beauty). Only five years old at the time, it was less than half the size it is today. There was no hotel, no movie theater, not even a magazine covering the landscape at the time. Can you imagine? Obviously, much has changed. With four times the average retail shopping per capita and some extraordinary master-planned green spaces, today’s Southlake proves to be quite the draw. Shoppers, day-trippers and those looking for bleisure (defined on page 20) often make Southlake their interim home base as they further explore the Metroplex. Tourist or not, if you’re reading this month’s issue then you don’t have to go far to experience some of the most celebrated outdoor vacation experiences. Grapevine Lake (not Lake Grapevine — it’s been verified) offers just about any opportunity outdoor enthusiasts covet. One last confession — fly fishing, horseback riding and kayaking are all things I’ve enthusiastically spent big bucks on during vacation, yet have never done in Texas. There’s one more thing that’s about to change.

It’s been a long and ever-changing twist of character development since then, but Lara Croft is back on the silver screen, this time based on the latest 2013 video game version of Tomb Raider. Starring Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft, Tomb Raider is sure to pack all of the punches that hooked you over a decade ago. The film centers on her first expedition in which she aims to solve the mystery of her father’s abrupt disappearance. Get ready for an action-filled thriller.

Though rough around the edges, one could argue that Marvel’s ex-superhero Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) has mostly good intentions. After a tragic event that left her with post-traumatic stress disorder and limited super powers, Jones has metaphorically hung her cape and opened a private investigation firm. Unlike other Marvel shows, viewers won’t find an inordinate amount of costumes, sci-fi wonders and the like. The show takes on a film-noir style, so even non-superhero fans may enjoy it. In the second season, be prepared to watch Jones as she continues to fight her own mental battles as well as physical ones.

R

esidents know why they love Southlake: the schools, the shopping, the amenities…the list goes on. But when it comes to tourists, many pause at what brings visitors out to our city. We aren’t just talking about Dallas and Fort Worth residents. People from all over the country come to Southlake for business, leisure or a combination of the two: bleisure. It is the perfect way for busy professionals to get the most out of their travels. Instead of jetting off to work and rushing home, many are adding some vacation or relaxation aspects into their trips to experience more while venturing around the world. It’s no surprise with the area’s surrounding metropolis of business ventures and Southlake’s upscale amenities that the city has become a hub for local bleisure and day-trippers alike.

WHAT DRAWS SO MANY TRAVELERS TO TOWN? BY ASHLEY MADONNA

SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

DESTINATION SOUTHLAKE SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

MAR 18 • 21

A BOOM IN BLEISURE Even though the idea of self-indulging while away from home is not new, recent numbers prove the movement toward bleisure is becoming the new normal. According to the Global Business Travel Association’s 2017 “bleisure study,” one-third of North American business travelers extended a work trip for leisure in the past year. And those rates climb in younger generations with 48 percent of millennials saying they have added on vacation time while on the road for work. The Dallas-Fort Worth bustling corporate scene continues to expand, which means more and more out-oftowners are initially coming to the area for business. Southlake is 10 miles from gate to street to the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, which was ranked fourth in the world for its sizable operations and 11th for number of passenger traffic in 2016. So all kinds of people are coming in and out of there every single day. The year’s 65.7 million travelers needed somewhere to stay after they stepped off the plane, so why not Southlake? “We offer a proximity for those who don’t want to stray too far from the airport,” City of Southlake senior marketing manager Jill Lind says. “It’s good to stay central.” Business professionals can easily stay at one of Southlake’s upscale hotels, like the Hilton Southlake Town Square or Cambria Southlake DFW North. And because those elevated establishments are doing so well with these guests, more big names – Delta Hotel by Marriott and The Westin Southlake Hotel – have their sights on Southlake as well. 22 • MAR 18

“I have lived in Southlake for 30 years, and I recognized with all the development happening here, there was a need for another high-end, full-service hotel,” Paul Barham, CEO of Harrell Hospitality Group – who manages The Westin Southlake – says. “People come from all over the country, the world, with the draw of the DFW Airport, so we are hoping to attract those high-end groups to stay in Southlake.” And that central mindset carries over when travelers try to plan out their DFW stay. When making an itinerary, out-of-towners often look for nearby attractions that will fill their nights or extended days with memorable experiences. Southlake acts as that luxurious middle ground for those who want to see all the amenities found in the Metroplex. It has a pretty even distance between both major cities bookending the area, 23 miles from Fort Worth and 25 miles from Dallas, so visitors can stay centralized to maximize their potential explorations. “You can stay here, spend a day in Dallas and hit the Museum of Art or the Perot Museum. And the next day, you can check out the Stockyards and see that cowboy culture that draws people to Fort Worth,” Lind says. With AT&T Stadium around the corner in Arlington, there are plenty of riveting sports games or big-name concerts available for night-time entertainment. Some of those headliners and coaches even choose to stay at Southlake’s own hotels because they know they will get high-quality service during every visit. These people can stay anywhere, and they are choosing to stay here because of the luxurious amenities and setting. “The number one reason why people stay in Southlake is because of the location,” Mike Hutchison, general manager of Hilton Southlake Town Square, says. “We are smack dab in the center of the Metroplex.”

Instead of competing with the other cities in the area, Southlake officials know everyone wins when they build each other up. “We think, ‘Why fight when we can all embrace the unique attributes that live in each city?’’’ Lind says. “The Metroplex is such a great attraction in itself and we do a really good job of supporting each other.” But if they are looking for a night in town, travelers can easily explore Southlake’s walkable environment without having to worry about straying too far away from their home base. After booking a room at the Hilton, guests are just a few blocks from fine steakhouses, boutique shopping options and a movie theatre – so the only thing needed for a night out is a pair of walking shoes.

A HOME AWAY FROM HOME While there are endless work and play opportunities in town, it's also nice to come back to a home base at the end of the day. And it’s even nicer when that location radiates a hometown spirit. Both locals and travelers can sense that homey feel when they drive into Southlake. Whether they are driving past Dragon Stadium during football season or are using the quaint city signs for navigation instead of relying on their phones, the vibe changes when you come into town. Because Southlake has built up a certain prestige, many local tourists are also attracted to seek out those amenities as well with a majority of the city’s tourists traveling in for the day. “Day-trippers are our biggest pull thanks to Southlake’s reputation,” Lind says. “An average drive for visitors is usually three hours.” Be it the extensive retail options or the area’s beautiful natural lures, there’s always something to explore, do or see while visiting. Somehow the 22 square miles of land that make up the city include 1,100 park acres, six miles of park trails and two amphitheaters. That’s on top of all the shopping. Southlake has more than four times the U.S. average of organized retail per capita on a square foot basis, according to the City of Southlake Tourism Master Plan. It all fits, it all feels right and there’s still room to expand. Everything feels like it’s done on purpose. It’s all laid out to make a day out on the town as convenient as possible. But because the city was zoned out precisely, there’s designated space to wander through the town and feel that sense of calm that comes from being at home. “While walking around, you can feel the tranquility in our environments,” Lind says. You can go from the humming Southlake Town Square to the Bob Jones Nature Center down the road to experience the quiet nature brings. The balance of both proves each visit here can look and feel different. And those visits can get even more exciting when the city is hosting one of their extravagant events. Their annual list of happenings includes Easter in the Park to Stars and Stripes for July Fourth, which draws in all kinds of Metroplex visitors interested in seeing what all the production is about. After analyzing the visitor satisfaction surveys circulated following each affair, Lind says they have found a bulk of attendees come from outside the city. “We see all kinds of people coming in for the events,” Lind says. “We do a nice job of promoting them, but that doesn’t slow us down throughout the rest of the year.” 24 • MAR 18

One of the city’s biggest events, Art in the Square – that got its start in 2000, has since become the eighth best fine arts festival in the U.S., according to the well-known ArtsFair Sourcebook. These events have experienced great success because of the recent trend for people to seek out experiences. Locals, especially those in younger generations, are choosing to spend their money on building memories instead of material goods. And if there’s one thing Southlake has tons of experience-building adventures.

A BENEFIT TO THE COMMUNITY While residents may, at first, bat an eye at the thought of visitors crowding from their town’s amenities and increasing city strains like traffic, tourism provides a real financial benefit to individual citizens. “Tourists contribute a great deal to our local economy,” Lind says. Last year alone, tourists added $21.7 million in local sales tax revenues, which accounts for 75 percent of sales tax revenues collected in Southlake. And with one of every 10 jobs in Texas being supported by travel spending, it improves the local economy and builds up the possibility of expanding Southlake’s amenities. “Tourism is important in Southlake. Our businesses rely on them,” Lind says. “Tourism means jobs; tourism means money. At the end of the day, they are a crucial piece of Southlake’s sustainability and vibrant quality of life.” So next time you are talking with an out-of-towner, give them a few insider tips on how to navigate Southlake – like taking a few of the back roads to avoid Southlake Boulevard during rush hour or checking out Feedstore Barbecue to enjoy classic Texas cuisine. It may come back to benefit you down the road. SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

DRAGON CHEER WALKS AWAY FROM STATE UIL COMPETITION WITH THE BRONZE Dragon Cheer represented their school well at the UIL Spirit State Championships in Fort Worth earlier this year. Of the 64 teams that competed at the Fort Worth Convention Center, Southlake Carroll walked away with bronze medals. Schools competed in crowd leading, fight song and band dance against other 6A-Division II squads. They finished behind Friendswood, who took home second place, and McAllen Memorial, who finished first. This is just the third year the Dragons have competed in this competition, and a big jump from last year’s eighth place finish.

EUBANKS ELEMENTARY STUDENT HITS THE RED CARPET A local star is rising. Sixth grader Lakyn McNew has been acting for three years. Her most recent part was in a movie called Content of Character. The independent film is based in the 1960s and focuses on the struggles black students faced when integrating into white schools. Lakyn was able to expand her talents to play her first mean role, as she acts as a bully to the new girl coming into school. While she is no stranger to music videos, commercials and modeling, Content of Character was Lakyn’s first movie role. Her mom says it was an educational project for her to learn about segregation during the 1960s. The film will be showing at multiple film festivals this spring, and the entire cast, including Lakyn, has already hit the red carpet for their film premiere.

CARROLL SWIMMING & DIVING TEAMS WIN BIG AT STATE For the eighth time in a row, Southlake Carroll’s Boys Swimming & Diving team placed first at the state championship. The state title marks tenth title in total. The girl’s team also made a showing at the Austin meet, finishing runner-up to The Woodlands, 253 points to 215. The boy’s team earned a point total to 247, leaving the runner-up well behind with 196. Dragon divers heavily contributed to these point totals with freshman Jackson Miller earning first place on the boy’s team and freshman Hailey Hernandez taking home gold followed by sophomore Bridget O’Neil in second place for the girl’s team. Stanford-commit and senior Jack LeVant was also a large contributor as he set new state records in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events.

hey didn’t officially reinvent the wheel, but the innovative minds behind G-RO definitely reinvented the carry-on. We have all played that game: jamming everything you need for your getaway into one bag and dragging it behind as you run to catch your flight. Take the stress out of packing by upgrading to a G-RO. The carry-on’s sleek design looks great while on the go and has the storage options you need to easily fit all of your traveling necessities. Its ballistic nylon material gives the luggage its soft top while the waterproof, hard bottom keeps your belongings safe throughout your trip. But the bag’s real winner is its patented feature: the wheels. Their large diameter effortlessly navagiates over uneven terrain, and the axle-less design does not take up any additional room in the suitcase. You don’t have to sacrifice storage for mobility. The

carry-on’s weight also falls over on the wheel’s rotational axis, which makes it feel lighter and easier to pull. And these two bad boys are stronger than your average bag wheels, so you can rest easy when you throw it in the back of your car or in the overhead compartment. It has a section for everything with an exterior work pocket that can fit a 15” laptop, a spacious interior compartment for your weekend wardrobe and easy access pockets to stick your wallet or keys to separate them from the rest of your belongings. It also comes with smart amenities like a portable charging bank, two USB ports and a luggage locator. All of these features are 100 percent compliant with the new airline smart luggage regulations. Check out their new 2018 lineup – their gold accents and new bag colors really pop compared to their competitors. And each G-RO comes with a lifetime warranty, so you have nothing to lose. Roll on!

WITHIN CASTS' REACH: GREAT FLY FISHING MAY BE CLOSER THAN YOU THINK BY M A L E E SA J O H N S O N

F

ly fishing has long been recognized as a more artistic form of angling. Stock footage of lone figures, knee-deep in picturesque streams with yards of fly line swirling gracefully behind them has worked its way into many a tourism commercial. Southlake is no stranger to the sport, with an Orvis directly off of Southlake Boulevard and a rod and reel manufacturer housed on Commerce Street. And while there are plenty of places to buy the gear locally, it's still a commonly held belief that you have to venture all the way up to Colorado for the closest fly fishing haven.

A DRAGON OUT OF SOUTHLAKE Only three hours away, a Southlake Carroll alumna makes a living putting eager anglers on some of Southeast Oklahoma's hot spots. A class of '07 graduate and former Dragon volleyball player, Morgan Banner lives to be outside. After college, Banner moved back to the Metroplex, where she had a job in pharmaceutical sales for about four years. "Then I realized that 9 to 5 grind was not for me and set out on a different adventure,” she says. That different adventure included selling everything two years ago and moving to Oklahoma where she and her fiancé, Trey Prater, spend the majority of their time in the great outdoors. The two work in Broken Bow, Oklahoma – the gateway to Beavers Bend State Park and home to Broken Bow Lake, both of which are part of the Ouachita National Forest. The forest features towering pine trees and plenty of wildlife. SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

“My fiancé and I sold everything, bought an RV,” Banner says. “The plan was to travel, have a life of adventure and find work along the way. Make a life, not a living.” Banner works on a zipline course and as a fly fishing guide for Beavers Bend Fly Shop. And while she may not be in the Lone Star State anymore, she estimates that 75 percent of her clients are Texan. She does half- and full-day guided trips for anglers of all levels. The trout are plentiful, and for the most part, year-round. Banner first started fly fishing six years ago. Prater had previously introduced her to bass fishing with a baitcaster, and she was hooked. She didn’t think she would like fly fishing as much, but the challenge turned out to be addicting. "It's just the feeling of fighting a fish on a fly,” she says. “It's so technical. You're using tiny little hooks, and it's definitely more of a challenge. It's the challenge of fly fishing and tricking the fish into thinking something that you tied is an actual bug that is just so rewarding." While Banner thoroughly enjoys pulling trout out of Oklahoman waters, she is quick to add that Texas has its own vibrant fly fishing scene. In fact, a

species that she can only hook in Texas turns out to be one of her favorites to pursue: "The state fish, the Guadalupe Bass, is one of the most fun fish to catch on the fly,” Banner says. “Or at least I think so, maybe I'm biased." "There are so many places in Texas to fly fish,” she continues. “Anywhere you can back fish, you can fly fish. It's not like you're limited to only catching trout on the fly rod. You can catch bass, crappie, gar, bluegills, whatever. And Texas has all of that."

SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

H AV E WAT E R , W I L L F I S H I T Banner isn’t the only one combatting the myth that fly fishing is exclusively limited to trout. Les Jackson, the education director for the Fort Worth Fly Fisher’s board of directors, has heard his fair share of misguided sterotypes. “There are a lot of people that think that they need to go out of state," says Les Jackson, the education director for the Fort Worth Fly Fishers. "The biggest misconception about fly fishing is that it has to be for trout.” In order to blow that misconception out of the water, Jackson will often share his own personal story of finding fly fishing success in North Texas. He took up the sport in 1995, but his local discovery took place in '99. “I just wasn't that skilled at that point," he says. "I was showing some friends of mine how to do some casting, but it was like the blind leading the blind.” To give his friends a taste of the sport, he took them to a portion of Rush Creek in Arlington. The creek system flows through Arlington and eventually drains into the Trinity River. The particular branch of the river that Jackson and his friends were at ran past a small pond in Jake Langston Park. With a playground and set of swings nearby, it didn’t seem like the most predictable spot to bust out a fly rod. Much to Jackson’s surprise, however, a decently-sized bass was swimming around. He looked closer and saw several others. “It wasn't much of a lake, but the bass were congregating there,” he says. “I fished it over time and had a blast. Over the years, I learned my craft by fishing there and just playing around in the creeks all throughout Arlington.” Jackson uses this anecdote to further his main point: you can fly fish almost anywhere that there is water. Last year, at the upper part of Rush Creek, Jackson landed a four-pound bass, or in his words “a hog,” though he admits that the catch was an anomaly. Typically, local fly fishers will catch local species of sunfish and small bass out of the creeks and ponds in the area. For example, Big Bear Creek, which winds its way through Southlake and Colleyville, is a great spot to wet a hook, Jackson says. Fossil Creek and Denton Creek also promise close-to-home fun. He emphasizes that anglers should enter the water through public access spots. Of course, how could one overlook the largest body of water near Southlake? SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

Grapevine Lake features its own fishing thrills, though it is more commonly fished from a boat. This doesn’t stop Jackson: he hops in a kayak, fly rod and all, and paddles out to the dam. "It's a really good body of water,” he says. "You can catch the white bass run. You can catch black bass in the coves. You can even bank fish down below the tailrace." A surprising strategy that Jackson disclosed was simply checking Google Earth. Sometimes when he is driving, he’ll see an enticing pocket of water and drop a pin to the location on his phone. "People ask where I fly fish and I just say, 'Everywhere!'" Jackson chuckles.

talian dining is all about the experience. Instead of rushing through your meal and darting out the door, the culture’s cuisine emphasizes the act of savoring. And guests are sure to savor each moment at Loveria Caffe. The upscale bistro in Colleyville offers beautiful aesthetics and a warm environment to its patrons, on top of its delectable dishes. Both the interior design and the dishes sweep patrons away to Emilia-Romagna. And that authentic spirit comes from the co-owners and executive chef, who moved directly from this Italian region to North Texas to open the restaurant of their dreams. “We provide fresh food that’s prepared from scratch daily,” co-owner Stefania Bertozzi says. “[Loveria Caffe] is an introduction into our culture, our history.”

Those northern Italian influences and passion for food are obvious in their multicourse, seasonal menu. Instead of settling on one entrée, Loveria makes it easy to build your own multi-course meal with their selections. Start out by sharing the Bruschetta Mista, Italian crostini served with an assortment of toppings: fresh pesto sauce, Pecorino Romano and virgin olive oil; garlic, tomato, basil, capers, salt and pepper; and their signature ragu alla Bolognese sauce. Then dive into their colorful Caprese Salad before moving onto your two main dishes. You can’t pass on their delectable pasta dishes. Lean into your cheesy cravings with their Cappelletti Cacio e Pepe topped with a Cialda di Parmigiano. The bite of texture makes the silky smooth cheese sauce that

SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

LOCALFLAVOR review is much more indulgent. And the handmade egg pasta is rich and light all at the same time. It’s picturesque presentation would make it hard to dive in, but it’s intoxicating aroma is just too irresistible to resist. “When you put the plate down, you look, then you smell and then you taste, so it’s important that the plate is nice,” head chef Michele Ragazzini says. To keep the fresh vibes going, order the Filetto di Pesce for your main course. It’s served with a caramelized onion reduction and white wine sauce and topped with a capper powder, leaving the plate looking just as good as it tastes. The fish is put in a hot pan to crisp up the skin, enhancing the protein’s natural flavors and adding a nice crunch to the flakey meat. Pair it with a refreshing pinot grigio and get ready to lose yourself in the food. If you gravitate toward red wine instead of white, don’t worry – there are still plenty of Italian options to choose from. The bistro has more than 60 labels with new selections coming into the restaurant constantly. Loveria Caffe’s team wants both newcomers and regulars to have different opportunities when dining in. If somehow you still have room for dessert, round out your meal with the Tortino al Ciccolato con latte Carmellato, a chocolate cake made with garbanzo and fava bean flour topped with a mouthwatering caramel cream sauce. It’s also one of the restaurant’s many gluten-free options available, so everyone can find something to wholeheartedly enjoy. Despite the sophisticated ambiance that gives the eatery its classic charm, the leadership team has not always been involved in restaurants. Chef Michele was a pharmacist in Italy while Andrea and Stefania, the husbandand-wife co-owners, were architects. But their hunger for great food drove them to America and to the culinary industry. “We had our jobs in Italy, but we left to follow a passion,” chef Michele says. “I changed my life to follow my love of cooking. People feel that passion, and it adds value to what we do.” And their previous background shines with the restaurant’s décor. Loveria Caffe displays beautiful books, furniture and home pieces throughout the space, all of which come from Italian vendors. Even the floors are imported from Italy. “We wanted to offer more than just food,” Stefania says. “We are combining our passions for food and interiors.” Whether you are looking for a new place to enjoy a cappuccino or an authentic Italian four-course meal, Loveria Caffe offers something unique to the community. And once you dine in, you will feel like a welcome part of the family. “People come back because they feel like they are home here,” chef Michele says. “They can experience the real Italian food in a real Italian environment.”

A Safe-to-Eat Treat Doughlicious Brings Edible Cookie Dough to Grapevine’s Historic Downtown

DOUGHLICIOUS 129 S. Main Street, Suite 140 Grapevine 817.329.5441 DoughliciousUSA.com

60 • MAR 18

Though many of us have been told raw cookie dough could be hazardous, it’s just too good to pass up. For some, the dough is even preferable to the cookie itself. But all of those worries are behind us with the arrival of Doughlicious in Grapevine. Conveniently located off of Main Street, Doughlicious is the perfect little spot to pop in after a day of shopping or wine tasting in Downtown Grapevine. Owner Courtney Sanders and her family are longtime Grapevine residents. She was inspired to start Doughlicious after seeing a viral video of an edible cookie dough shop. "Like many other people, I saw the video online of the one in New York, and I thought it was genius,” Sanders says. “I mean, who doesn't eat cookie dough? I’d rather eat it than actual cookies.” To get a perspective on how it works, think ice cream shop meets cookie dough. Guests can order scoops that are served in either a cup or cone. The scoops are the same size as ice cream scoops, but as you probably could have guessed, the dough is far more dense than any soft-serve. What makes it edible? The secret is pasteurized eggs and heat-treated flour. Sanders creates custom flavors based on the time of year. For example, last month she served up rich, delectable Thin Mint cookie dough, complete with chunks of the tempting Girl Scout treat. Other flavors include chocolate chip, Reese’s, sugar cookie and s’mores. To make the cookie dough edible for everyone, Doughlicious also offers gluten-free and vegan options. Doughlicious also offers milkshakes, which are proving to be some of their most popular menu items. The cookie dough of your choosing is blended with vanilla ice cream and can include a variety of their sweet toppings. It’s a level of decadence that requires a serious cheat day. Even in the winter, these cold shakes are selling like hotcakes. Since its grand opening in November, the shop has become a hub for cookie dough lovers. And rightfully so – there aren’t many places like it. "As far as I can tell, we are the first edible cookie dough storefront in Texas to open,” Sanders says. While the trend continues to grow, Doughlicious is the prime spot to get the scoop.

REDISCOVER THE SCENIC BEAUTY OF

GRAPEVINE LAKE

Y By Ashley madonna

SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

ou don’t have to travel far to experience a great getaway. One of the Metroplex’s most beautiful “natural” amenities is in our own backyard. Grapevine Lake stretches 8,000 acres and has more than 19 miles of trails and 60 miles of shoreline, so you can say there’s plenty to explore. Whether you want to travel by foot, bike, horse, boat or kayak, there’s so much to see and do while out on the man-made lake.

MAR 18 • 65

GRAPEVINE LAKE is often referred to as LAKE GRAPEVINE despite the local parks supervisor’s mission to set the record straight

HIKING Grapevine Lake provides some of the finest walking and hiking trails in the area. The best way to find your favorite is to get to stepping. Different park, lake and city views wait around each of the trail’s turns, giving visitors a diverse scenic experience while also offering varying terrain along the way. Like Oak Grove Trail that runs for 1.3 miles through the park with lake views throughout. It also connects with C. Shane Wilbanks Trail and Dove Loop Trails, so it’s easy to keep going while also checking out different aspects of the area’s landscape. There is also plenty of bird watching and wildlife viewing available in the area. Just jump on Lakeview Trail to see for yourself. To find a group to saunter through the area with, stop by the Lake Grapevine Runners and Walks (LGRAW) Clubhouse, located in the old Beer Bait Gro store. Hikers of all levels meet every weekend at 7 a.m. to navigate the trails together. 66 • MAR 18

“There are so many trails,” LGRAW board member Ken Merte says. “Despite the fact that these trails are so close-in, they can, at times, feel very secluded.” BIKING Get in some biking on the Northshore Trail. The bike friendly route runs for more than nine miles from Rockledge Park to Twin Coves Park. Every entrance to the trail, with one at each of the trail’s ends and another in Murrell Park, has a trailhead with designated parking and an easy start to warm up on. The trail itself has both smooth spaces and stretches of difficult terrain to challenge bikers of all levels. But with the area’s breathtaking sights from both lake cliffs and shores, it’s imperative to stop along the way to take in the view. Make sure you stop by MADD Shelter see who else is out on the trail. It’s been nicknamed “Biker Lot” because of all of the mountain bikes that continuously come in and out. “We have an excellent and enthusiastic mountain biking community in Grapevine,” Grapevine Lake parks supervisor Peter Doyle says. “Grapevine has over 1,500 acres of property to explore around the lake. It is a rare gem to have such expansive wild space in this sprawling Metroplex.” SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

TROTTING That’s right. Saddle up with the Widowmaker Trail Rides on Walnut Grove trail. The trail runs through woods, creeks, meadows, hills and beside the shoreline, so riders can look out and experience all of the area’s beauty while on the back of a strong horse. Southlake locals David Alexander and Jeff Cook lead small, private groups through a two-hour guided ride, giving each visitor the personal attention needed to walk away with a bit of knowledge about proper form. Plus, it’s a great opportunity to relax and take in the fresh air. Each ride is by appointment, so make sure to book in advance. “I’d say 50 percent of our riders are tourists from all corners of the world. I get very few Southlake people,” Alexander says. “Most of them say the same thing when they find us, ‘I never knew I could go horseback riding here in my neighborhood.’” SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

BOATING Grapevine Lake makes for great boating on a warm Texas day. Bring out your poles to try your hand at catching a few largemouth bass, blue catfish or white bass – all of which are popular in the man-made lake. Or, leisurely steer around while the kids kneeboard behind the boat. To enhance your own skills, take a wakesurfing lesson with DFW Surf. If you don’t have a boat, charter the Black Watch for a romantic sail on the lake. After docking at Silver Lake Marina or Scott’s Landing Marina, make your way to one of the lakeside dining restaurants to enjoy great food while gazing out on the water. “People come out to Grapevine Lake to enjoy its beauty, to go fishing, sailing, hiking, biking, kayaking and paddleboarding,” DFW Surf founder Tyler Marshall says. “The sports we teach are the fastest growing watersports in the world that anyone and everyone can do without any prior experience.” KAYAKING For a quieter take on watersports the whole family can do together, rent kayaks at Lonestar Adventure Sports in Rockledge Park. With both single and double kayaks, visitors can either take control of their adventure on the water or team up to make a splash. Beginners can take a kayak lesson with Lonestar Adventure Sports to learn how to safely cruise around the area before paddling out. Stick close to the reservoir on Grapevine Lake Paddling Trail to enjoy a laidback day on the water. You’ll still have plenty of room to explore because the shoreline stretches for more than nine miles, depending on where you jump on. Whether you want to go out all day or try out a romantic sunset paddle ride, the athletic activity will have you coming back for more time and time again. SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

hether you’ve been married a few years or a few decades, this piece is for you. It’s time to revisit the concept of an oddly named vacation phenomenon – the honeymoon. Second honeymoons are most definitely a thing, and they come with the added bonuses of not being exhausted from planning a wedding. Instead, at this point, you’re probably just exhausted from that fun thing referred to as “the grind.” Maybe you’ve been run ragged from work. Guanaja, Honduras Ah, the Caribbean. It sounds predictable, but in this little island’s case, you may find it a bit less crowded. Guanaja is one of the Bay Islands of Honduras. Cruise ships stop in neighboring island Roatan, but you’ll find Guanaja is far less traveled. It features a small airport and landing strip that larger commercial jets cannot access. The island features lush, tropical foliage and beautiful beaches, but come prepared to battle sand flies. For a truly secluded paradise, take a boat from the main island over to Graham’s Place – a sevenacre private island owned by, you guessed it, Graham. The tiny island has a hotel, a house and individual bungalows for rent, all of which are beachfront. No, it is not the easiest place to get to, and it may not be as luxurious as all-inclusive Caribbean resort hot spots, but these little islands are perfect for the adventurous couple who are done putting up with crowds. GrahamsPlace.ky

Malta Malta seems to be one of those places that you recall hearing about but couldn’t point to on a map. The island chain is located in the central Mediterranean between Sicily and the North African coast. Despite being one of the world’s smallest and most densely populated countries, Malta has a rich history that extends far beyond its square milage. Featuring historical sites relating to the ancient Roman Empire, the Moors, Knights of Saint John as well as the French and British, this archipelago is a must-travel for history buffs. It is also famously home to the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, a subterranean complex of halls and burial chambers dating to circa 4000 B.C. Even if ancient history is of little interest to you, Malta still has plenty to fill your agenda. Its location in the middle of the clear, azure Mediterranean Sea makes Malta a premiere scuba diving location. Due to the calmness of its waters and low risk for dangerous fish, the country has been heralded as a top location for beginner divers. And, as you may have already guessed, the beaches aren’t bad either. The main coastal resorts and larger sandy beaches are in the northern part of Malta, the most popular being Mellieha Bay, Ghajn Tuffieha and Golden Bay. With so many sites to see and luxurious resorts to relax in after an activity-filled day, Malta is a great place to rekindle the romance. VisitMalta.com

North Island, Seychelles For many couples, it’s not uncommon to have more expendable income once the second honeymoon rolls around. Hopefully that’s the case if you were thinking of visiting this island. One of 42 Seychelles islands, North Island is small and privately owned. It was the 2011 honeymoon location of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, so if you want to feel like royalty, this is the island to visit. It comes at a price, however. Last year, Luxury-Hotels.com named North Island Lodge, the lone resort of the island, the most expensive hotel in the world, with an average nightly rate of $6,995. The resort’s chef always asks for guest’s preferences prior to their arrival and order ingredients based on their tastes. There are four private beaches and a luxury spa, making North Island the premiere paradise for relaxation – if you can move past the price tag. North-Island.com

SHANNON BREWING COMPANY TURNS ST. PATRICK’S DAY INTO A WEEK-LONG CELEBRATION

N

o one throws a party like a brewery and no one throws a St. Patrick’s Day party – or parties – like Shannon Brewing Company. The Keller brewery will host jolly shindigs throughout the week leading up to the larger gatherings over the weekend. From 5Ks to trivia nights to the lively St. Patrick’s Day party on the day itself, there are so many reasons to come out and embrace the Irish in you. Founder, and Southlake resident, Shannon Carter holds this holiday close to his heart, which is why he goes all out.

MY FAMILY IS… Irish, so St. Patrick’s Day was always something to be celebrated. My grandfather was actually a brewer in Ireland. Almost every St. Patrick’s Day growing up, we had corned beef and cabbage. It was more of a home holiday where we would cook and go to church. As I got older, I found out there was more to the holiday than what I experienced at home, with people going out to pubs and celebrating. My favorite part of St. Patrick’s Day is the celebrating. Now, we are welcoming everyone into being Irish. WE ARE GOING TO CELEBRATE… the entire week with beer specials. We expect to have more than 500 people here over the course of the week. People show up with their kids, their dogs – on a leash – and bring their families. THE SATURDAY BEFORE ST. PATRICK’S DAY… we will be hosting a 5K that starts at 9 a.m. Everyone can go out and run or walk and then come back for a couple pints, dishes from the food trucks and live music. You’ll have to brush up on your Irish trivia for our trivia night that Wednesday. We decided to host it because people always want to know about Ireland. Thursday will be Shannon Running Club’s Shamrock & Shenanigans. Friday will be a movie night where people can actively sit out in the production area to watch or passively watch in the taproom. SATURDAY IS THE BIG… St. Patrick’s Day celebration. There will be bagpipers, other live music and lots more happening. We will be having some really rare stuff, so we will be using small glasses so people can do 10 different samples. You will get a great breadth of different beers. And the week ends with an Irish breakfast on

Sunday, where we will be serving corned beef hash. We will also have a small dart tournament and will be finishing the last of those rare brews. IT'S REALLY IMPORANT TO US… that people have a good time. Our first year, we did one event and so many people showed up. So we knew we needed to have a few more. We think we have it about right now. It’s a real nice string of parties without huge lines for beer. I LOVE… beer, and it was always my passion to brew an all-natural product. That is why we located the brewery in Keller, so we could brew with the spring water there. The spring we get our water from is the oldest documented spring in Texas. WE OPENED THE BREWERY… in 2014. It was truly a dream for us. Our brewery is small and intimate, allowing us to take our time in creating some truly wonderful and one-of-a-kind beers. WE BREW WITH… fire, using local Texas spring water and fresh ingredients – handcrafting the finest beer available. WHEN I’M NOT BREWING… I thoroughly enjoy spending time with my family. I have two daughters at home. We love to travel, especially to dog-friendly locations because of Arlo – our German Shepard-Golden Retriever mix. I also sponsor my soccer team here in town. COME READY TO… have a pint, eat some good food, hear some Irish music and have a great time. It’s open seating, so it’s not a bad idea to bring your own chair. The day The day is a celebration of everyone because everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day.

Look Out, Lovatics! Now’s your chance to tell Demi Lovato you love her when she stops by Dallas this month

D

emi Lovato is not sorry about her music, her body or anything else — and that confidence has propelled her to superstardom over recent years. Now this female-power-anthem pop singer is coming to Dallas as part of her Tell Me You Love Me Tour, based on her most recent album of the same name. Explosive hits like “Sorry Not Sorry” (which reached more than 350 million global streams and more than 200 million music video views), “Sexy Dirty Love,” “You Don’t Do It For Me Anymore” and the album’s title track will all be performed along with several of her greatest hits like “Cool for the Summer,” “Stone Cold” and “Heart Attack.” Self-positivity has not always been Lovato’s trademark. The Grammy-nominated and multiplatinum singer started her career on Barney and Friends as a young girl before she starred in Sonny With a Chance on Disney Channel. From there, the world watched, prayed and cheered for her as she struggled with an eating disorder and worked on recovering and focusing on her health. Now the star doesn’t care what others think — and she’s much better for it. The pop singer is sharing the spotlight on tour with Grammy-nominated singer, producer, record label owner and social media king, DJ Khaled. This industry executive is famous for his charttopping songs featuring well-known artists including JAY-Z, Beyonce, Drake, Rihanna, Justin Bieber and Lil Wayne. Expect to hear singles like “I’m The One” and “Shining” from his newest album, Grateful. Together, Lovato and Khaled’s music will fill you with energy, good vibes and the urge to let loose and enjoy yourself.
