the choice is yours

There are nearly 4,000 businesses registered in Southlake alone. According to the city’s economic development department, three in four of them have fewer than four employees. To me, that’s the epitome of small business. Mom-and-pop shops are the ones who employ and invest in the fabric of our communities. Small businesses not only put their names on their doors — they also personally answer calls from customers and calls to action, doing all they can to exceed expectations and next week’s payroll.

When you add in businesses with fewer than 20 employees, then we’re talking about more than 95% of local businesses — and the data carries forth to all of our reader cities. These are exactly the businesses we aim to support with our fifth annual Readers’ Choice program. Thanks to you and another record-breaking year of voting, we’ve compiled a remarkable list of restaurants, shops and professionals you most like to work with across more than 180 categories.

If you’re amongst the 9,000-plus people who nominated, voted and participated in this year’s survey, thank you. Together, we’re doing our part to support local business.

Luxury Realtor And Readers' Choice 2024 Winner Takes You Behind The Scenes

What is the best time to sell a home?

The best time to sell a home in Texas may vary, but the spring and early summer months are known as the most favorable times to sell a home. This period typically sees increased buyer activity as families often move during the summer months to avoid disrupting the school year. Our area continues to attract families year-round. Due to limited inventory, I have advised sellers to list during the winter holidays. Strong market demand with fewer competing homes often result in my clients receiving multiple offers over listing price.

Does staging a home increase buyer interest?

Absolutely! Staging is like dressing up for a first date or a job interview — it’s all about making that killer first impression. It helps buyers envision themselves living there, which can significantly increase their interest and ultimately lead to a sale. Staging isn’t just about making your home look pretty — it’s about making it irresistible to buyers and maximizing its value.

How does a buyer benefit from working with you as an agent?

The Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex is large and can be overwhelming for buyers, particularly those moving to the area. In my 11 years as a local realtor, I have represented both buyers and sellers across the metroplex and more locally here in Southlake and neighboring cities. I offer insights into trends, pricing and competition, empowering buyers to make informed decisions. As we get to considering specific properties, I conduct thorough research, tour homes and guide buyers through the negotiation process to ensure they have all of the necessary details to navigate the North Texas real estate market with confidence.

What is your experience selling in this area?

As a member of Keller Williams’ luxury division, I’ve been recognized as a Top 10% producer in Southlake and have received numerous awards and recognitions. While I have supported many buyers and sellers over the past 11 years, I take great pride in making lasting connections with my clients that often result in repeat business. Whether a first-time buyer is looking to upgrade, relocate or find that special investment property, my clients can count on me for my knowledge, honesty and professionalism.

RECRUITING TALENT

Southlake’s Ross Fenstermaker Forges Next Generation Of Champions

Ross Fenstermaker will tell you firsthand that baseball isn’t just about the game — it’s also about the player. As a vice president and assistant general manager, Ross is responsible for developing players and scouting for new international talents, along with assisting general manager Chris Young on assembling the major league roster. Now in his 16th season of professional baseball, Ross is looking forward to molding tomorrow’s Texas Rangers.

As a West Coast transplant who moved to Southlake, Ross was a left-handed pitcher at Granite Bay High School and the University of California-Davis before graduating in 2008. His first job out of college was as an advance video scouting intern with the Seattle Mariners in 2009, but it didn’t take him long to become a Ranger. In 2010, he reviewed and processed over 1,200 scouting reports in preparation for the amateur draft, and shortly after, joined the Rangers full-time as a professional scout.

Throughout the next 10 years, Ross would move up the ranks in Rangers baseball, from crosschecker to professional scouting director to senior scouting director. His expertise and quality of recruits paid dividends, with Texas farm clubs accounting for a 377-435 (.522) record and three affiliates qualifying for postseason play. Many of the players Ross and his team signed and developed became part of the Rangers’ 2023 roster, which went on to win their first-ever World Series Championship against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

With a new season underway, the pressure is on for all of the Rangers to be on their A-game, but Ross welcomes the challenge.

“Winning the World Series sets the standard,” Ross says. “Expectations are to continue finding and developing championship-caliber players who can bring another championship to the Rangers organization.”

Whether they’re homegrown talent or an international diamond in the rough, Ross takes pride in developing every ballplayer to the fullest.

“It’s a great time to be a Ranger,” Ross says. “We’re excited about our future here.”

“We are in the business of people development. I am lucky to be part of one of the best scouting and player development staffs in baseball.”
— Ross F.

A SIGHT TO BEHOLD

GET YOUR GLASSES READY FOR THE TOTAL ECLIPSE

On April 8, an extraordinary astronomical event will cast its shadow over Texas — a total solar eclipse. This rare celestial phenomenon offers a unique opportunity for millions, especially in the Lone Star State to witness daytime darkness as the moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun.

The DFW Metroplex is perfectly positioned to offer some of the best viewing experiences in the country. Thanks to our wealth of hotels, parks and other viewing locations, the entire metropolitan area is in for a truly amazing experience.

The eclipse's path will cross 13 states from Texas to Maine, and the southern end of the path has the best chances for good viewing. According to NASA, the eclipse first touches Texas soil at 1:27 p.m. CST and exits at the Oklahoma and Arkansas borders by 1:49 p.m. CST. During its travels, the moon's shadow will accelerate from about 1,580 miles per hour to 1,850 miles per hour, offering a jawdropping view for everyone below.

The next North American total solar eclipse won’t happen until 2033, when it will only be visible in Canada. Those of us in the U.S. won’t get another chance to see it until 2044, so we've listed a few places to make the most of this opportunity.

A PROFESSIONAL TOUCH

The Grass Is Greener With C&T Landscape and Design

When they started C&T Landscape and Design in 1999, Chris and Tammy Austin had nothing but a pickup truck and a passion for perfecting lawns. Over 25 years later, the couple’s landscaping enterprise has grown to 30-plus employees and 17 trucks that successfully cover Southlake and its surrounding areas.

Specializing in high-end residential landscaping services, C&T Landscape and Design can handle any project big or small, whether it involves refining hardscape surfaces or reinvigorating outdoor spaces.

“We thrive in any environment,” Chris says. “We can start any project from the ground up, from a blank canvas to a complete redesign of an existing landscape.”

Every C&T project starts the same way — by sending out one of its lead designers to meet with clients and discuss their goals. Once the designer gets a feel of what the client is looking for, they will create a design and make it a reality.

“Our focus has always been on the client,” Chris says. “We have a certain niche we fill. We like dealing with homeowners and homeowner associations for all landscaping needs.”

From planning to installation, C&T Landscape and Design aims for only the highest standards in lawn care. That’s why customers keep coming back and referring C&T to family and friends over and over again.

“We would not be the company we are today without the loyalty of our clients,” Chris says. “When somebody calls in, they’re our top priority.”

For Chris and Tammy, C&T Landscape and Design isn’t just about trimming grass or lining flower beds — it’s about providing exemplary customer service and crafting first-rate outdoor experiences the client won’t soon forget. From shaping elegant and aesthetically pleasing spaces to cutting-edge maintenance services, C&T Landscape and Design transforms your lawn into a flourishing paradise you can show off proudly.

“We have been clients since 2003. C&T created our landscape designs, added walkways and built our putting green. It’s a great company with great people!”
— Dianne W.

On March 3, 11 Carroll High School students presented a broad range of five-minute TEDeD talks, including “The Value Of Imperfection,” “Graceful Servicing” and “Every Day Is Leg Day.” Coaches Karen Otto and Lynda Warner helped students prepare for their presentations while parent organizer Kamal Tamirisa helped coordinate the event. KENNEDY FULLER GOES PRO

Southlake Dragon fans have witnessed the rise of many athletic talents over the years, but perhaps none more prolific than soccer star Kennedy Fuller. The 2022 State Champion and 2023 Gatorade National Player of the Year recently made headlines by forgoing

co-chairs for the 2024 GRACE Gala. As proud Grapevine residents since 2012, the Masons are responsible for several businesses in the community, including a private Montessori-style school, a nonprofit, two painting companies, a music company and a real estate brokerage firm that merged with Chip and Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia Realty. Now organizing the 2024 GRACE Gala, the Masons look forward to hosting the event on Nov. 2 at the Gaylord Texan Resort. “Both Justin and I love Grapevine and are longtime supporters of GRACE,” Theresa says. “We are honored to be the co-chairs of the 2024 GRACE Gala.”

WADE BOWEN TO PERFORM AT DRAGON CLASSIC

The DM Enterprise Group is bringing out a special guest for the ninth annual Dragon Classic. Held annually at the Grapevine Municipal Golf Course, the Dragon Classic is a golf tournament organized by Carroll alumni to raise funds for CISD teachers. While every tournament features its fair share of golfing, food and special prizes, this year’s event will feature a special performance from a true Texas country artist. Winning Male Vocalist, Single and Songwriter of the Year at the Texas Regional Radio Music Awards, Wade Bowen is known for boot-stomping singles such as “Honky Tonk Roll” and “Hold My Beer” and will perform live after the Dragon Classic.

LOVING LONG EARS DONKEY THERAPY WELCOMES NEW BABY BOY

Georgie, the newest addition to the Loving Long Ears family, has captured hearts all across Southlake. Last month, Peaches the donkey gave birth to the healthy baby boy at Loving Long Ears Donkey Therapy & Sanctuary in Southlake. Throughout his first week of life, supporters donated $10 contributions in the hopes of naming the young foal. Although several names were under consideration, voters ended up naming the newborn Georgie. The money raised throughout the week will go toward his development towards becoming a therapy animal for adults and children in need.

DRAGON FLUTIST ACHIEVES FIRST CHAIR AT STATE

Five Dragon musicians advanced to state in early February, but only one reached the first chair in his section. While clarinetist Fe Lau, horn player Rylie Allen, pianist Alexander Feng and tenor saxophonist Michael Fradkin all struck a chord at the TMEA All-State Convention in San Antonio, David Zachariah reached first chair for the flutes, making him the No. 1 flute player in the state of Texas. “I am thankful for the opportunities afforded to me by my teachers and Carroll ISD,” David says. “Their support empowered me to excel both academically and musically.”

DYLAN OTA CROWNED WRESTLING STATE CHAMPION

The No. 2-ranked wrestler in the state became No. 1 during the UIL wrestling state championships earlier this spring. On Feb. 17, Dragon sophomore Dylan Ota advanced to the state tournament alongside six other Dragon wrestlers. Previously qualifying for state as a freshman, Dylan helped the boys secure their 10th consecutive district championship earlier this year. During the state tournament, Dylan defeated opponents from Katy Paetow, Klein and Cole Park across four matches before defeating state runner-up Jackson Shipley from Dripping Springs 6-3.

CARROLL THEATRE TO PERFORM “SHREK THE MUSICAL”

The Dragons are going green for its spring musical. Taking place May 2-4, Carroll Theatre’s upcoming production will feature all of the lovable fairy tale characters from Far Far Away in “Shrek The Musical.” Carroll Theatre supporters will get the chance to meet the cast of characters during “Shrekfest” on April 27, where breakfast will be served and one of Loving Long Ears’ donkeys will be giving their best Eddie Murphy. Tickets for the upcoming show are $10 and can be purchased online or at the box office at Carroll Senior High School.

At its recent Catalyst Awards event, 6 Stones recognized the group of more than 200 dedicated moms and their sons with the NextGen Game Changer Award, a testament to their contributions and commitment to their community. “Food, backpacks, school supplies, bicycles and gifts are all great and needed, but what this group ultimately gave was hope to each child and family served, which transforms lives, homes and communities,” School Based Initiatives associate Nan Hoenich says.

ACADEMY AWARD WINNER STOPS IN COLLEYVILLE LOOK Dine-In Cinemas welcomed an Academy Award winner during a special screening of his film last month. Directed by Associated Press photojournalist Mystyslav Chernov, “20 Days In Mariupol” provides an on-the-ground account of the first 20 days of Russia’s siege on Ukraine in 2022. Mystyslav stopped in Colleyville to host a screening and live Q&A about his experiences filming the conflict up close prior to accepting the Academy Award for Best Documentary on March 10. “For the people who see the film, I hope they look at Ukraine not as a political topic, but as a humanitarian catastrophe,” Mystyslav says. “That’s actually my main hope — for more people to see it.”

TAILORED TO YOU

Whether you’re a first-time customer or are addicted to the build-it-yourself lifestyle, everybody recognizes the name IKEA. Between the 310,000-square-foot store in Frisco and the click and collect point in Grand Prairie, North Texans can’t get enough of IKEA's extensive furniture inventory filled with thousands of options. Thankfully, we no longer have to drive 30 minutes because we have IKEA’s latest Plan and Order concept right here in Park Village.

As the first of its kind nationwide to include a pickup point, this compact and efficient design studio equips you with all of the resources to plan and execute your project from start to finish. With the help of creative professionals on staff, it’s never been easier to share your vision of a dream closet and bring it to life.

Design Your Dream Closet With IKEA’s New Plan And Order Concept

ONE-STOP SHOP

IKEA Southlake might be smaller in scale compared to the larger department stores in Grand Prairie and Frisco, but that works to its advantage. The 10,809-square-foot space has access to everything the big stores carry without the overwhelming sensation of navigating through packed crowds. Plus it’s close enough to avoid a commute if items are forgotten, measurements are inaccurate or exchanges need to be made.

“We’re focusing on one thing, and that’s making sure the customer has everything they need in regard to their plans and designs,” sales and design leader Terry Lee explains. “It’s just more intimate [with] the customer and planner, and we’re able to get more things done [without] being distracted by the hustle and bustle of the big store. A lot of the customers that have been coming in actually love it. It’s quieter [and] you can actually concentrate.”

While strolling through the store, you’ll notice its layout is intentionally built to assist with decisionmaking. Numerous showrooms emulate kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms and closets that act as a guide for inspiration, from structure and style to paint shades and hardware.

“This is a one-stop shop,” Terry says. “You’re able to pick up your countertops, kitchen doors, the color that you want, even handles. “Then, in your consultation, we’ll be able to get all of those things gathered up and sell it to you.”

COMPLETELY CUSTOMIZABLE

When it’s time to start planning, schedule an appointment with an IKEA designer and have your closet measurements ready. Once you arrive for the initial consultation, a staff planner will help execute your vision in the wardrobe planning bay, where a virtual blueprint will be developed.

“There are two monitors — one the planner actually does the work on, and another monitor where the customer can look and see exactly what the planner is doing,” Terry explains. “You can switch things out, change things around and everything.”

The designer will start from scratch and work with you through every detail. With measurements in hand, you can then choose layout and storage options before adding customizable features such as lighting, color, organizers, doors, frames and shelves. If you want to work off of a template, wardrobes can also be modeled after one of the store’s displays.

“Our units are designed to fit pretty much any space,” Terry explains. “If you want one of these in a specific size, we can customize that.”

The biggest benefit of having an in-person appointment with a staff member is that they can coordinate with other IKEA retailers to ensure products are available and accurately fit your space.

“During planning, [we] literally go through everything to make sure that everything is in stock because things happen. Sometimes things are discontinued. We’ll look to ensure that it’s a pretty good stock,” Terry notes. “If it’s not, then we’ll let you know. That way, you can change and we can tweak in that moment right there, and you don’t have to worry.”

PLANNING WITH PAX

Prefer to skip the retail stores? Use IKEA’s online wardrobe designer PAX. Through the online 3D system, you can start a design from scratch, browse for inspiration with IKEA’s pre-designed wardrobes or have the program generate customizable recommendations based on your preferences. Since the PAX system is used both online and in person at the IKEA planning bay, you can start a project at home then bring your virtual blueprint to the design professionals for some creative direction.

Any closet combination is available, including hallway, sliding, hinged, corner, mirrored, fitted, open, narrow, reach-in, walk-in and children’s wardrobes. Once a selection has been made, you can customize the layout, size preferences and storage needs, whether you’re folding or hanging clothes, stacking shoes or building insets for accessories.

Upon completing the structural portion, you can customize the wardrobe with interior options, including shelves, trays and cases, drawers, organizers, motion-sensored or dimmable lights, metal accents and more. Exterior adjustments feature solid, wood or glass doors, frames, handles and even more color options. As materials are added to your cart, the total cost of the project will stay updated so you can follow along and track your budget.

SOUTHLAKE STYLE MAGAZINE

“The most important thing is ensuring that you have the accurate measurements because when it comes down to the final price, that will definitely make a difference,” Terry advises.

Regardless of whether you design a wardrobe at IKEA’s Plan and Order point or online with PAX, pickup is right around the corner at the Southlake store. When reviewing the delivery process online, select Southlake as the pickup point and you’ll be able to see when the order arrives.

FROM START TO FINISH

Unlike retailers specializing in one aspect of a home remodel such as the floors, countertops or cabinets, IKEA Southlake helps with everything from start to finish so you don’t have to manage all the moving parts. They even take their customer care a step further by coordinating with third-party contractors for installment. You can have products delivered to either your home, business or the Southlake pickup point, and upon arrival, IKEA’s trained contractors will be scheduled and deployed for assembly.

“It’s more economical, more cost-efficient than a lot of times [when] you go into an actual custom builder. You can get everything right here,” Terry says. “We do everything for you. All you have to do is pick whatever you want, how you want it and we’ll do the rest.”

Doctors Mason And Novak Provide A Full Range Of Cosmetic Procedures

If anyone knows how much impact a doctor can have on someone's life, it’s Dr. Mark Mason. Before he became a successful surgeon with over 20 years of experience, Dr. Mason grew up in West Texas as a bull riding state champion who went to college on a scholarship. But after he broke his jaw during a bull riding competition, a surgeon's impressive skills and compassion helped him toward recovery and compelled him to pursue a career in medicine. Dr. Mason completed his plastic surgery residency at Stanford University Medical Center and moved back to Texas to open Southlake Plastic Surgery & Med Spa.

Dr. Mason is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and excels in all aspects of cosmetic surgery, from facelifts to mommy makeovers as evidenced by the thousands of patients he’s treated in his 23 years of practice. Recently joining Dr. Mason as his partner is Dr. Matthew Novak, who offers a full range of cosmetic procedures. Dr. Novak earned his Bachelor of Science and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Texas State University, where he was also named an NCAA scholar athlete in cross-country and track. Dr. Novak went on to earn his medical degree from the renowned University of Texas McGovern Medical School in Houston, which included a research appointment at the prestigious MD Anderson Cancer Center.

After finishing his plastic surgery residency, Dr. Novak went on to complete an elective, one-year fellowship in aesthetic surgery at the highly sought-after Dallas Plastic Surgery Institute. This additional year of training was spent focusing on all aspects of cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical aesthetics of the face, nose, breast and body.

Art In The Square Featured Artist Has A Distinct Style

Hailing from a small town in upstate New York, David Palmer grew up surrounded by dairy farms, wooded fields and creeks whose fertile grounds shaped his childhood summers and artistic abilities. David sold his first painting at a school art show at the age of 12. Today, this Californian’s body of work can be seen in galleries and museums across the country, not to mention more than a dozen Hollywood feature films and at this month’s Art In The Square.

A TRIP TO ITALY TOTALLY CHANGED… the way

I thought about painting. I'd always thought of a painting as just a visual image. But seeing 500-year-old frescos falling apart, being patched and repaired, reminded me that they are also physical objects, subject to the elements and the passage of time. The surfaces of my paintings reveal patches of underlying color, reminiscent of those aging frescos, and of the peeling American billboards I see out on the road.

MY WORK IS A COMBINATION OF… the vocabulary of Pop Art and classical sensibility. The style I call “Retro Pop” features singular subjects, bright colors and a shallow picture space. While much Pop Art is a response to mass media, my paintings are inspired by daily life. They are rendered with an attention to detail that has more in common with classical painting than with comic books or advertising.

I FIND INSPIRATION IN… dreams, memories, daily life and contemporary culture. I paint things from personal experience that are also universal. My cow paintings remind me of riding my bike past the Holsteins near our house when I was a kid. The Arrivals series came from eating at the In 'N' Out Burger next to LAX while watching the planes come in.

MY ASTRONAUT SERIES… came to life after hearing a news story about the crew aboard the International Space Station. After six months in orbit, they were returning to Earth in the midst of a pandemic. It got me thinking about how they were going from one kind of social distancing to another and about the isolation we were all experiencing at the time. I wondered if they'd keep wearing their space suits at home.

THERE ARE TWO PARTS TO… being an artist — the solitary process of creating the work, and the social part of getting it out into the world. I'm

thrilled to be a featured artist at this year’s Art In The Square and that my painting “Re-Entry” helps define the visual identity of this year's show.

I TRAVEL TO… art fairs across the country showing my paintings. Some are in big cities, like Chicago or Philadelphia, and others are in vacation destinations like Palm Springs or Park City. What I love about Art In The Square is that Southlake feels a bit like the small town I grew up in, but it's also part of a major metropolitan area. The setting and the audience are a wonderful blend of urban and rural.

“THE X-FILES,” “SPIDER-MAN” AND “THE POLAR EXPRESS”… all featured digital effects I helped create. It was a cool day job and my work appeared in over a dozen big Hollywood films. While creating the three-headed dog for “Harry Potter,” I worked with modelers, lighters, animators, compositors and computer programmers to realize the director's vision. After spending the day in front of a computer, I'd go to my studio and paint. The film work helped support myself while I pursued the thing I loved.

MY STUDIO IS… a converted two-car garage just 20 feet behind our house in Pasadena, California. There's a huge tree in the backyard, with a noisy population of crows and ravens. My dog Wilson is my studio manager, and he does a good job of letting me know when to take a break and throw him a tennis ball. It all helps balance my work and personal lives.

WHAT I MOST ENJOY IS… exploring recurring themes and experimenting with new ideas. It's like taking a walk in a new neighborhood. At each corner, I decide which way to turn, and I end up arriving at places I couldn't have predicted. The journey into the unknown is what I find exciting. I can't imagine ever stopping.

New Italian restaurant comes to Texas Live!

etween Globe Life Field, AT&T Stadium and Texas Live!, it’s easy to see why Arlington is considered the sports mecca of the metroplex. With Ballpark Way crowded with those eager to watch the Dallas Cowboys or the World Series Champs, the Texas Rangers, Arlington’s sports fans are always hungry for both a good game and a hearty meal to enjoy afterward. That’s why they should make their way over to the Loews Arlington Hotel and dine at its new destination Italian restaurant, Farena.

Serving as the culinary epicenter of the 888room luxury resort, Farena fuses Italy’s culinary traditions with fresh ingredients to bring an authentic Italian experience to life. In preparation

of the restaurant’s grand opening, executive chef Mouhssine “Moose” Benhamacht traveled to Italy for 10 days and spent time honing his skills with local chefs in Sicily, Trento, Barolo and Torino. From longtime cheesemakers to truffle hunters and farmers, executive chef Moose’s travels laid the very foundation for Farena.

“Chefs invited us into their homes and kitchens,” executive chef Moose recalls. “They were eager to teach and pass on their craft because with it, they are passing on their Italian heritage.”

The Italian influence is felt immediately upon entering the 3,840-square-foot restaurant. Rustic touches, industrial fixtures and rich finishes throughout create a balance of casual comfort

with a refined sensibility while patrons can watch chefs work their magic at the pasta station. The centerpieces of this spectacular dining hall are the two wood-fired stone pizza ovens, which cook Neapolitan-style pizzas at a fiery 900 degrees.

As stunning as the dining room is, the core of the restaurant comes from the cereal grains they use to create every bread loaf, pizza and pasta dish. That’s why the restaurant is called “Farena,” which translates to “flour.”

“Authenticity of ingredients is paramount,” executive chef Moose says. “Italians buy the best ingredients and do the least so the food can speak for itself. Simplicity creates sophistication.”

Dinner doesn’t start until the drinks come in, and Farena boasts a splendid mix of specialty cocktails and high-end wine selections. The Vulcania is made with Hendrick’s Gin, Campari Liqueur, Carpano Antica Sweet Vermouth and Amaretto for a taste that’s as sweet as it is potent. The Neptunia is a lighter alternative with a blend of Patron Blanco tequila, Cocchi Americano aperitif wine and Giffard grapefruit liqueur. And between its 23 offered reds, whites, bubbles and roses, diners have many ways to fill up their wine glass.

When it’s time to move on to the main course, diners have plenty of exciting options to explore. Pizza variations include a fungi porcini mushroom pizza, a speziata spicy pizza or the bianca topped with gorgonzola bechamel sauce, ricotta cheese, fio di latte and roasted garlic. Whether you order the tagliatelle, linguine di mare or agnolotti, every pasta dish is elevated by either clams, mussels, red prawn, pecorino, pancetta or a veal and pork bolognese that’s as hearty as it is flavorful. The best part is if you want to take Farena’s Italian influence home with you, its staff of trained chefs host classes every week where you can learn to make your own pasta.

Of course, no meal is complete without dessert, and Farena’s offerings will satisfy anyone’s sweet tooth. You can never go wrong with the traditional gelato, but the pistachio and marble chocolate cheesecake provides a dark amaretto accent that nicely complements every bite. The coffee, hazelnut and chocolate layer cake is paired with a warm ganache that tastes rich and velvety, and if you’re looking for something to share, the family-style tiramisu can’t be beat with a creamy mascarpone that melts in your mouth.

No matter which part of the experience you gravitate toward, every aspect of Farena embraces the rich history, traditions and culture of Italy.

“It’s so much more than ingredients,” executive chef Moose says. “The entire process is sacred from the ground to the table.”

Golden Heart

Ben Hague Conceives New Original ChopShop Juice

For over 10 years, Original ChopShop has prided itself on serving “feel-good food” that’s as healthy as it is tasty. That includes its new Golden Heart juice, a bev erage made not by its corporate culinary team, but by one of the Southlake location’s very own employees.

As the assistant manager for the Southlake res taurant, Ben Hague has over five years of experience working in some of Original ChopShop’s busiest res taurants in Park Cities and Lakewood.

“I love the positive vibes, the feel-good food we offer and watching the guests enjoy it every day,” Ben says. “All of the ingredients we use are freshly pre pared in-house the day of. It’s something you can eat every day and never feel bad about it.”

When the Plano-based company held a compe tition to see who could come up with the next big drink, Ben put her juicing skills to the test and con cocted a drink that embodies all of Original Chop Shop’s greatest qualities. Calling it the Golden Heart, Ben’s beverage is blended with a mix of pineapple, golden beets, lemon and orange that brings out the sweet citrusy taste in every sip.

“I finish it with a pinch of salt to enhance the sweetness of all of the fruits that are in there,” Ben says. “It tastes sort of like a healthy mocktail. It’s al ways my go-to.”

Company leadership loved her drink so much they rolled it out to all 22 locations across three states.

“I didn’t believe it at first — I actually thought it was a joke,” Ben says. “Like ‘No way, I never win any thing.’ But then again, I’ve never really put myself out there before, and it paid off big time. I’m over the moon about how much people love it.”

With repeat customers ordering the Golden Heart juice over and over again, Ben says her culinary ex ploits have motivated her to experiment with new drinks, including lemonade. Whatever Ben comes up with next, you can trust that she’ll pour her whole heart into it.
