Life looks different in and around Southlake under the current Tarrant County stay-at-home order. Kids are learning from their kitchen tables; parents can now add temporary teaching to their resumes; health care providers across the globe are working tirelessly to ensure public safety. And as new challenges come our way, we are adapting to meet them every day. We here at Southlake Style are also adapting. While our April issue may look a little different than our typical publication, our team is dedicated to doing what we do best: covering the community. We love to share local wins and success stories with positivity, and we are continuing to aspire toward this goal in spite of current circumstances. Through it all, what makes our community great remains the same. The four women featured in “Championing Community” prove that there’s more than one way to make a difference. And after spending “Five Minutes With Erik Phelps,” it’s hard to not feel proud to be in the same city as nonprofits that are constantly putting others’ needs first. While this magazine doesn’t list out events happening this month due to mass closings and cancellations and we know that our “Reservation For One” travel piece may be more for window shopping right now, the core of our efforts stands true. And through it all, we are with you. As more step up and do the right thing for others, it’s clear that even though Southlake’s day to day may be different, this city is still the same. Community members prove that they are here, ready for their neighbors and willing to help where they can.
Happy reading!

We Learned During Readers’ Choice 2020
The Buffalo wing community is strong in Southlake. Duff’s has quite the hold on the market. There are lots of aestheticians in town. That category had the largest pool of nominations. When it comes to desserts, cookies come out on top. Ame Beanland knows her way around Photoshop. Her Readers’ Choice memes had us cracking up!
GOOGLE ARTS & CULTURE MUSEUM VIEWS AVAILABLE NOW With closures of major entertainment centers and art museums taking over headlines, Google is making it that much easier to experience the world’s greatest exhibits and heritage sites. Google has expanded its virtual tours to offer panoramic views of famous locations with its 360-degree Street View Tours, including the Taj Mahal, Palace of Versailles and Great Pyramid of Giza. These online tours resemble walking through a space and taking in all the surroundings on a closer level, providing great educational opportunities for both kids and parents staying at home. Learn more about the museum views available at ArtsAndCulture. Google.com.

Foodies will go to bat for their favorite burger joint. It was hard to get our pool down to just five nominations. Brunch and breakfast are very different categories. There can be some overlap, but those meals deserve unique listings. Southlake’s principals have large support systems. Our top three racked up hundreds of votes.
THE GIFT OF FUTURE PATRONAGE Support local restaurants by purchasing gift cards or takeout.
EVERY BUNNY'S BEST FRIEND Parents left wondering; Is there any place left to hide...eggs?
WEB WORKOUT Many closed gyms convert to online classes to ensure clients can still sweat it out.
Southlakians are willing to drive for a quality patio. Feedstore BBQ received the most votes in any category. We love hearing from you! And we love showcasing which businesses in town are your favorites.
THE CHEESIEST MONTH Foodies everywhere try to make the perfect gooey sandwich during National Grilled Cheese Month.

ask A. . EAGLE SCOUT SHARES HOW HE BUILT SOUTHLAKE’S FIRST LITTLE FREE LIBRARY
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO TAKE ON THIS PROJECT? A couple of years ago, my family was on vacation in Washington D.C., and we visited a neighborhood on Capitol Hill where my parents used to live. There was a Little Free Library there, and I thought it was really cool. HOW DID YOU CHOOSE THIS AS YOUR EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT? It is something that I had not seen in Southlake and something that I could do in my community that would be permanent. HOW DOES THE LITTLE FREE LIBRARY WORK? You can take a book or two if you see something interesting, and you are also encouraged to leave a book. Basically, it facilitates people sharing books on an honor system. HOW DID YOU WORK WITH THE CITY TO MAKE THIS PROJECT HAPPEN? I emailed the Parks and Recreation Department about my idea. They spoke with Councilman John Huffman who liked the project. They asked me to submit a design. I did some research and emailed the Parks and Recreation Department pictures of some of my favorite little free libraries that I found online. Once they chose a style, I drew a diagram with dimensions and a list of materials, which they approved. HOW DID YOU COLLECT THESE BOOKS? I created a flyer for my scout troop (402). We collected donated books from a couple of neighborhoods here in Southlake.
14 • APR 20
LITTLE LIBRARIAN
Cale Meacham HOW WAS THE LITTLE FREE LIBRARY BUILT? My dad and I took my materials list to Lowe’s, and because this was for an Eagle Scout project, they discounted the cost of the materials. The metal base was fabricated and donated by Ratliff Iron Works, which was a huge help. Once we had the base ready and the main body of the library built, we coordinated with the Parks and Recreation Department. They dug the hole at Bicentennial. We cemented in the metal base. And then the next day, we attached the main body of the library and added the initial batch of books. WHAT DO YOU THINK PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE LITTLE FREE LIBRARY? The city of Southlake is interested in putting up more of these around town. We spent a lot of time building mine because it was going in such a prominent location and was the first one for the city. It was fun building something creative, but I think that people could also design and build something simple if they just want to get started.
WHERE IS IT LOCATED? It is located at the entrance to the playground in Bicentennial Park.

f you have already blown through your digital library while staying at home this month, revel in a little bit of sunshine with the help of the streaming services at your disposal. Start your scenic TV adventure with the Oscar-winning classic “March of the Penguins” and its sequel, which shows emperor penguins struggling for survival. Morgan Freeman provides the voiceovers in both, proving to be its own remedy for serenity. Retain his soothing voice as your home’s background noise by keeping the nature documentaries featuring his narration flowing with IMAX’s “Born To Be Wild” and “Island of Lemurs: Madagascar.” Stick with the cold climate as German filmmaker Werner Herzog hikes through Antarctica in “Encounters At The End of The World,” which is only slightly more chilling than his explosive volcano documentary “Into The Inferno.” There’s no shortage of sea life in movies such as “The Cove,” “Blackfish” and “Chasing Coral.” For an out-of-this-world perspective, soar to space with Darren Aronofsky's “One Strange Rock,” which could be a double-entendre for the substances found in Aronofsky’s “Requiem For A Dream.” Finish your worldly watching with English broadcaster David Attenborough, who has narrated hundreds of documentaries during his 70-year career including “Planet Earth,” “The Blue Planet” and “Our Planet.” His documentaries inspired 17-year-old Greta Thunberg to take up climate activism, leaving us to wonder if he’s going to narrate her upcoming documentary later this year. If not, maybe Morgan Freeman is available?

Walk It Out
Sidewalks are on Southlake residents’ minds. In 2017, the citizen satisfaction survey showed 25% of respondents were dissatisfied with the city’s provision of sidewalks and trails. The most recent survey yielded similar results, with 26% of 2019 respondents also expressing disapproval. As residents continue to express concerns over safety, accessibility and foot mobility, the city has unveiled new initiatives to help residents stay up to date on new sidewalk developments in Southlake.
Connecting The City Stephanie says the city plans connections using the Pathways Program, a strategic initiative that prioritizes sidewalk construction based on the available right-ofway and adjacent land use. She says sidewalk projects are built either through the city’s capital improvement program or privately, and construction can take anywhere between six to 12 months. “It’s rare that one is not being constructed at any given time,” Stephanie expresses. Stephanie says the traffic management division also takes comments and feedback from the community either by phone or email, and they take the feedback they receive seriously. She adds that the traffic management division itself was a result of the citizen satisfaction survey. “It will take a collaborative effort from the city, homeowners and business owners to connect our city,” she remarks.
Pathway Perceptions Southlake’s more than 30,000 citizens currently have more than 180 miles of sidewalks, park trails and pathways at their disposal according to the city’s website, with over 20 miles of new sidewalks planned through ongoing projects. While the city has constructed more than 21 miles of sidewalks since 2009, 67% of survey respondents still rate providing pedestrian walkways as a high priority, second only to maintaining parks and facilities. “It is important to realize that the desire for sidewalks in Southlake has changed over several decades,” Transportation Manager Stephanie Taylor says. “In the early 2000s, residents wanted to retain a more rural feel in neighborhoods. Now, many residents are asking for better pedestrian connectivity.”
Mapping The Future One new feature born from the recent citizen satisfaction survey results is the interactive sidewalk map, which can be accessed on the traffic management division’s webpage. Layers on the map can be selected to show pre-existing sidewalks as well as future segments not already built. Residents can also enter their address and see which sidewalks are already nearby, as well as planned improvements that are under development. But that’s not all the city is doing. Stephanie says the city is also reviewing the Pathways Program and standardizing its criteria so projects can be ranked in order of importance. “Sidewalks represent so much more than bits of concrete,” Stephanie expresses. “They are vital to a city and its quality of life.”

While some find themselves in the spotlight, there are many more in town who have boots on the ground, get their hands dirty and work tirelessly to make the world a better place. This month, we want to share the stories of four unsung servant leaders. These locals support different causes, but they all know the value of giving back and helping others.

Olivia Hein While most high schoolers fret over their own prom and homecoming apparel, Olivia Hein's focus is on others. Hein, a CISD senior, teamed up with her mother Lynne to collect dresses for high school students whose families were affected by Hurricane Harvey in Houston. This natural disaster reminded Olivia of her own childhood when her family couldn’t afford a new dress for an important dance. “When I heard about the young women in Houston and what they were going through after Hurricane Harvey, it reminded me of that experience, and it really hit close to home,” Olivia says. The mother-and-daughter pair have collected close to 2,500 dresses. Each year, they reach out to locals asking for donations and then drive the dresses down to Houston to donate them in person. Lynne and Olivia even help the high schoolers choose the dress of their dreams, providing them with more than just an outfit. “The donations allow the girls to have a night free of worries about money and be able to have fun like everyone else,” Olivia says. “This feeling of normalcy adds to the high school experience of all these girls’ lives and hopefully brightens their day.” Lynne and Olivia have no plans on slowing down, with both hoping to collect more dresses this year. And that’s because Olivia says that while she knows she’s providing a great service, she also realizes giving back is its own reward. “Giving always feels more rewarding than receiving,” Olivia says.

Kathleen Ruth Kathleen Ruth saw her sister-in-law’s friend, Carol, receive an electric reclining chair after undergoing a mastectomy following treatment for breast cancer. After recovering from the procedure and no longer needing the chair, Carol passed it along to another woman in the St. Louis area who had also undergone a mastectomy. Then that person gifted it to someone else after she was finished with it. That’s how The Healing Chair initiative began. This type of recliner ensures these women don't have to use muscles that hurt post surgery to stand up. There are now 25 chairs circulating in St. Louis, helping women retain a little more comfort through tough times. Kathleen brought The Healing Chair to the Metroplex last July, and since it started, 13 clients in North Texas have benefited from a similar chair — including Southlake’s first chair recipient, Mimi Tran. The organization now has seven chairs in use, and Kathleen says there are plans to buy more. “It’s so simple, but it means so much to people who are getting it,” Kathleen says. Along with Pattie Stebbins, Kathleen delivers the chairs to the people who need them, and after setting up the chair, the client usually keeps the chair for six to eight weeks — longer if they need it again following reconstruction surgery. Clients also get a couple of pillows, a blanket monogrammed with The Healing Chair’s logo and a journal which travels with a chair so they can read the entries of past clients and write their own. “That’s why we’re doing it,” Kathleen says. “To make their lives a little easier for what they’re going through.”

Doris Martinez Navarro In October 2016, Doris Martinez Navarro traveled to Fort Worth with her daughter to help one of her friends hand out food to the homeless. After seeing so many individuals come out to the courtyard looking for help, she felt inspired to do more. She eventually built a nonprofit from the ground up called Helping Hands 4 The Homeless – Tarrant County to collect donations that would benefit this homeless community. Once a month, she travels west with her volunteers to hand out essentials like food, water, suitcases and clothing. Doris says she makes an effort to see those looking for a helping hand as respectable individuals, and she wants those she benefits to feel seen and cared for. “We are so quick to judge others without knowing their stories. I love talking to each of them when I am sitting with them,” Doris says. “When we are there to serve them, we treat them with respect and importance, because we all deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.” What started out as a group of two or three individuals has grown into a powerful initiative that drew 60 volunteers during the holidays. Doris says the volunteers not only make the work easier but also benefit more than those who receive donations. “It’s fulfilling to bless others. I can’t explain it,” Doris says. “Not only does it bring hope and happiness to people, but it also leads to spiritual and emotional growth.”

Elisa O’Callaghan In November 2018, Elisa O’Callaghan drove from Southlake to the U.S.-Mexico border with a van full of supplies to help the asylum-seeking families. When she arrived, she saw children playing with sticks and rocks, while some of them even slept on hard concrete. After Elisa drove back home, she designed and sewed a dual-purpose pillow that doubles as a stuffed animal. She dubbed her creations “C.A.L.M. Dolls,” an acronym for creating a loving memory, and drove back to the border to give them to the children. “Children really love these dolls,” Elisa says. “They give them comfort. They serve as something to feel safe with — to hold onto and sleep on.” As the founder of C.A.L.M. Dolls, Elisa works with teams across North Texas to sew C.A.L.M. Doll skins for immigrant children, even communicating with one volunteer out in Florida. No two dolls are alike, and Elisa makes it a point to craft each one as unique and special as the children they're going to. Once they are completed, the volunteers ship the doll cases to Elisa so she and her team can stuff and wrap them. Elisa then makes the 500-plus-mile trip at least once a month to hand-deliver the dolls at the border. Elisa estimates that she’s delivered over 700 dolls since July. She also teaches art to children on the sidewalk when she’s there. “It brings people together,” Elisa expresses. “It’s about reaching out to a child and reminding them that they are children and that they are valued and loved.”

Southlake Responds To COVID-19 The Community Stands As One
I
t’s hard to talk about local news without mentioning the effect COVID-19 has had on Southlake at large. With positive cases within city limits, local government, the school district and community members have been working diligently to ensure the safety of Southlake’s citizens. On March 24, Tarrant County issued a stay-athome order for its citizens, stating residents should only leave their homes for essential travel, essential work or for essential activities. Before that announcement, the city responded with closures, first postponing its annual Celebrate Southlake event, then canceling all of its city council, board and commission meetings on March 13. Carroll ISD closed its doors starting March 16 and will remain closed until at least April 3. On March 17, Southlake Mayor Laura Hill issued a declaration of disaster,

limiting the size of gatherings to no more than 10 people, which does not apply to office spaces. It also restrains restaurants offering business to curbside, delivery or take-out transactions as well as orders bars, taverns, theaters, private gyms and other entertainment centers to close. The community then reacted to help the residents that needed it most, including families and the elderly. Some residents started Facebook pages to begin outreach initiatives and share resources, such as Southlake People Helping People and the Southlake Community Group. Local nonprofits such as Metroport Meals on Wheels and GRACE continued to distribute food to those most impacted. As social distancing continues into the coming weeks, Southlake will continue doing what it does best — looking out for one another. EMERALD BELLES PERFORM AT MAVERICKS GAME The Emerald Belles represented Southlake by performing during halftime at one of the Dallas Mavericks’ games in March. Performing for four minutes to the tunes of Ozzy Osbourne, Guns N’ Roses and Journey, Emerald Belles director Melissa Page says the Mavericks were at first resistant to having the Belles perform, telling Melissa that they don’t allow high school halftime performances. But after the Belles auditioned for “America’s Got Talent” and made it all the way to the finals, the Mavericks changed their tune. The Belles were also scheduled to perform for the San Antonio Spurs’ halftime show on March 20 as well before the NBA suspended its season on March 11. “It was just so fun for the girls because it was a sold-out game too,” Melissa says. “The crowd seemed to love it. They just cheered.”

The Carroll Education Foundation i s a b o u t $ 5 5 ,0 0 0 away f ro m meeting its goal for the 202021 school year. That’s especially saying something considering they had to cancel its 2020 CEF Culinary Celebration event last month. With the World Health Organization declaring COVID19 a pandemic on March 11, CEF decided to cancel its culinary “Friday Night Fever” celebration, which was going to be held April 3 at the Southlake Hilton Hotel. CEF Executive Director Kathy L a n i e r s ays t h e o rg a n i z at i o n chose to cancel the event instead of rescheduling it because reproducing the event format was not logistically possible. “Cancelling t h e c u l i n a r y ce l e b ra t i o n t h i s year was a difficult decision, but together with our executive leadership, I believe we made the only possible decision for the health of our community,” Kathy expresses. The culinary celebration will be replaced with an online auction and raffle on April 3. Kathy expresses that the best way to support CEF during this challenging time is to purchase raffle tickets, bid online and donate to the fund directly. “We are so thankful for the support of our Dragon community and know that with their help, CEF will reach our goal and be able to fund 11 teachers — one on each campus — for the 2020-21 school year,” Kathy expresses. Despite the cancellation, CEF has still raised $495,000 for the school year, which is 90% of its $550,000 goal. Kathy says they’ve been able to raise so much thanks to the generous business community and Dragon families who have supported them so far.

FIVE CARROLL MUSICIANS PERFORM IN TEXAS ALL-STATE BAND Five Carroll musicians experienced history during the Texas Music Educators Association Convention Feb. 12-15 in San Antonio. Not only was it the 100th annual TMEA Convention but also it was the first all-state band performance many of them got to experience. Three of the students, trumpet player Chase Adams, tenor saxophonist Tori Thomas and violinist Grace Xu, previously placed in the Texas all-state band in November, while contrabassoonist Drew Keady and bassoonist Diego Pena placed in the band in January. With this being the TMEA’s centennial celebration, the special occasion was marked by commissioning a piece by Texas composer Frank Ticheli called “Sailing the Sky,” which the bands performed during their Saturday concerts. “They all had fantastic performances,” CISD Band Director Ken Johnson expresses. “For students to earn a spot in the top 2%, that’s such a huge honor. We couldn’t be more proud of those five.”
BOYS SOCCER TEAM CAPTURES DISTRICT 5-6A TITLE FOR SECOND CONSECUTIVE TIME On March 3, the Carroll ISD boys soccer team (18-1, 11-0) celebrated not one, not two but three wins: Senior Night, their coach’s 200th career win and clinching the District 5-6A title in an 8-0 game against Keller Fossil Ridge. “This team is so focused that this was a nice moment to enjoy reaching their goal with their teammates,” head coach Aaron Cottrell says. “This team and especially this senior class love each other, and it is apparent in how they play. When you care that much about something, great things will happen.” All eight goals were made by senior players with Varsity Man of the Match Griffin Massey scoring the seventh goal for the Dragons. “This team is all business,” Cottrell says. “We have achieved the first goal for our season but have been training for the long term. Our boys are focused on more and have the mindset to make a deep run in the playoffs.” March 3 also marked the team’s 18th consecutive win and Cottrell’s 200th career win, a feat he says he doesn’t care much about. “I’m just grateful to be here at Carroll and to be coaching such a great group of young men,” Cottrell says. “Head down, keep working.”

ST. MARTIN-IN-THE-FIELDS HOSTS DRIVETHRU ASHES St. Martin-In-The-Fields Church offered its ashes to go this past Ash Wednesday. During the day of prayer and fasting, volunteers greeted drivers at their vehicles, prayed for them and offered them ashes through their unique drive-thru setup. Parish administrator Anika Rinker says the church has held the drive-thru ashes since 2013, and its popularity has grown from 40 cars in their first year to 80 in their last. “It’s very convenient for those people just getting off of work to be able to go through our drive-thru and get that done,” Anika says. “It’s a chance where they can connect where they otherwise wouldn’t have had the time to. There’s a need there, and we just wanted to be there and support the people that need it.” CARROLL HIGH SCHOOL HOSTS INAUGURAL RAD DRONE COMPETITION Carroll High School hosted the Robotics Education and Competition Foundation’s annual aerial drone competition last month on campus. The RAD Competition is a drone tournament that tests high school and middle school teams with their drone piloting skills through two different matches: drone racing and package delivery. Forty of these competitions take place all across the nation, with Carroll being one of two Texas schools to host this year. Winners from those tournaments qualified for the VEX Robotics World Championship. Carroll had five teams qualify before the championship was canceled in March.

ONE SAFE PLACE OPENS FULL-TIME FAMILY JUSTICE CENTER IN GRACE GRACE is helping to provide a safe place for victims of domestic violence with the opening of a full-time family justice center at 837 E. Walnut St. in Grapevine. One Safe Place is a Fort Worth nonprofit organization that aims to prevent crime and violence in neighborhoods, schools and homes, according to a media release. As part of that initiative, One Safe Place operates family justice centers in Fort Worth and Grapevine to provide danger assessments and safety planning to victims of domestic violence, including women and children. The organization recently expanded its Grapevine family justice center to full-time from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, which marks the first time they have done so for a satellite location. GRACE chief program officer Stacy Pacholick says the partnership makes both organizations more equipped to combat domestic violence, allowing victims to get the resources and consultation they need in a shorter, more convenient time span. “We are thrilled to have them here and we think it’s a huge asset for Tarrant County to have those services right here in our backyard,” Stacy says.

Over 100 people gathered to role-play the lives of low-income families and interact with human service agencies, grocers, pawnbrokers, bill collectors, job interviewers, police officers and many others. Participants had to decide how to pay for their mortgage, rent, utilities, food and medical bills while facing challenging circumstances, and often they couldn’t afford to pay for everything. After the simulation, a Q&A session was held between the attendants and groups that assisted impoverished families living in Northeast Tarrant County, including GRACE, Catholic Charities Fort Worth and TXU Energy.

here's to the little guys Small businesses are the lifeblood of the U.S. economy, contributing close to half of the country’s gross domestic product and two-thirds of all new jobs. More importantly, small businesses have the heart that make communities better. They do everything from feed us our favorite meals to service our air conditioning. And they do it all with the love and care of a friend who hopes to see you again soon. In times like these, I’m prouder than ever to be a small business serving this community. This month we’ve done a special service compiling your opinions on the best area businesses across five categories: food and drink, health and wellness, entertainment, services and retail. The pages that follow are the results of your nominations and votes. I ask that you let them serve as one big community referral when you need them most. They can also serve as a reminder to support the very businesses who support our schools, our youth sports teams and our local charities each and every day. Studies have shown that as much as $45 out of every $100 spent locally gets recirculated within the community. Let’s all shop the area’s best, the timing couldn’t be better.

CARS’ EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SHARES HOW THE NONPROFIT PROVIDES RIDES AND CONNECTIONS
I
n a world of balancing work, family and extracurricular activities, lending a helping hand can often fall to the wayside. For those who have an interest in giving back but have full plates, Southlake has an array of nonprofits that are in need of volunteers with just a few spare minutes in their schedules. One of them, Call A Ride Southlake, has spent the last 20 years ensuring seniors get to where they need to be. Executive director Erik Phelps says that while there are more ride-sharing options today than when the program started, the nonprofit does more than provide free transportation. It provides a connection for those who need to be seen. IT ALL STARTED IN… 2000. Other Southlake seniors and retirees were looking around and seeing that some of their friends weren’t showing up like they used to. Call A Ride Southlake (CARS) was created to lessen the feelings of isolation seniors feel when they no longer drive. As you can imagine, you may have been on the planet for 70 years, but now your kids have to say you have to give up the car keys. While they may still be in Southlake, their kids don’t have the time to take these seniors where they may want to go when they want to go. THESE SENIORS… don’t have that autonomy any more to say, ‘I’m going to get up and go to the senior center.’ When you are isolated, even if you are isolated in a beautiful house, you are still lonely. By providing those rides to the senior center to get your hair done or for even medical appointments, it allows them to maintain a certain level of connection. MOST PEOPLE WHO… find us, whether it is from the volunteer side or the client side, say, ‘I never knew you guys existed.’ You don’t know we exist until you need us. NOW THERE ARE MORE… options for transportation. There’s Uber, Lyft and those types of things, but seniors in many instances are somewhat shy about using those car services, whether it’s just because of a lack of knowledge, a lack of trust or a lack of awareness. We have a nonprofit staffed with volunteer drivers who have already been background checked, who are local and whom they may see on a weekly or monthly basis. So we have that warm experience. We are a completely different animal. It’s a different level of comfort, familiarity and safety. VOLUNTEERS ARE… the gasoline in CARS’ engine. Without volunteers, Call A Ride Southlake does not operate. We have some volunteers that have been here for more than a decade and have driven the same people for more than a decade. Every one of my volunteers is like gold to me.
LAST YEAR… we provided over 1,700 one-way rides, driving more than 11,000 miles. All that was with 24 drivers. We desperately need more volunteers so that we can meet all the unmet demands for the rides we currently have. Many years we have to turn away 100, 200, 300 ride requests just because we don’t have drivers available. THE AMOUNT OF TIME… our volunteers give varies. There are people who will do five different trips in a week, but those five are right here in Southlake, so it’s probably 10 minutes each. So every week it’s maybe an hour’s time, but they are helping five people. And our volunteers can do this while they are doing something else anyway, so it’s pretty convenient. When you are on the way to work, you might be able to drop someone off at the senior center. When you are on the way to shopping, you might be able to drop someone off at a doctor’s appointment. It can all be done when it’s convenient for the volunteer. ONCE OUR VOLUNTEERS… get started and they get to know these individuals, they say ‘Wow!’ Our drivers start out by giving a neighbor a lift and potentially lifting that person’s spirit. But, by the end, they have lifted their own spirits based on the camaraderie. I THINK A LOT OF US… are guilty of walking down the street and seeing a senior citizen and just looking at the physical shell. You see the walker; you see the cane; you see the wrinkles on the face. But what you don’t see is what is inside of that shell. There is so much that’s happening underneath that surface that if you uncover, you can learn what kind of connection you could form or bridge. There are a number of charities and efforts for the young, but there are few in this area that focus on this demographic. And we are all going to get there if we live long enough. I am selfishly doing this because I want this to be around when I need the service in 20 years. And I want to help all the people in between.

hether you prefer to grow vibrant flowers or seasonal vegetables, the first step in gardening is creating a proper space for it — more specifically, the soil beds that will hold your plants. Kick-start your spring project with Troy-Bilt’s Mustang Dual-Direction Rear Tine Tiller, available at Home Depot. With this power tool, there’s no reason to break your back creating the soil beds individually by hand. Thanks to its dual direction functionality, this tiller will break up the ground with its counter-rotating mode and till softer soil with its forward-rotating mode, ensuring the hard work gets accomplished without a sweat. The Mustang Dual-Direction Rear Tine Tiller allows you to control how deep you till the soil, so
you can make adjustments based on your plants’ needs. With a five-position adjustable depth stake, you can easily create a space for strawberries and spinach, which may only need a foot, while also setting up your watermelon and tomatoes for success. The tiller’s gear selection handle and power reverse makes maneuvering this machine easy, so you no longer have to fear tight corners or dense soil. Worrying about wear and tear is also a thing of the past as its aluminum die-cast housing prevents grease leakage and water intake. Whether you dream about lining your fences with rose bushes or harvesting your own veggies, the first step is making this investment. Because with this tiller, everyone can grow a green thumb this spring.

eer isn’t the only thing Revolver Brewing is cooking up. They’re also brewing ideas, memories, new sensations and different flavors. And more recently, they created Revolver Brewing’s BLDG 5 Tap Room, which recently opened in Texas Live! alongside the new ballpark. Revolver Brewing was founded in Granbury in 2012 by father-son duo Ron and Rhett Keisler. It is widely known for its signature ale Blood & Honey, made with orange peel, Texas honey and a blend of spices to give it a sweet
yet satisfying finish. Master brewer Grant Wood discovered the flavor the same way he crafts all of his new brews — by experimenting with different ingredients and recipes. As soon as it's allowed, beer lovers will get a chance to be part of that creative process when they step into Revolver Brewing BLDG 5, the microbrewery’s first footprint in the Metroplex. As fans walk past the corrugated metal doors, they will start to sense the rustic, industrial aesthetic of the new brew pub. With clinker tile and stone walls adding a country feel, and fur and leather chairs adding warmth, it’s easy to feel at

home while finding a seat. Even the ceiling lights, made from 400-pound metal firepits, are reminiscent of sitting in the backyard by a crackling fire. “This is a direct extension of the brewery out of Granbury,” Grant says. “Everything looks like a big giant barn … like rural luxury.” The brewery, visible behind the bar top, features 10 aluminum barrels busy producing 16 different taps. While it’s most known for its Blood & Honey ale, Grant says the brewery makes a diverse set of brews, including the Kolsch-style honey ale Backyard Bee and the tangerine IPA Full-Tang. It also produces a cold nitro brew with beans from Salter Bros., a local coffee roaster based in Arlington. The Over Yonder, a dark pale lager flavored with malt, proves BLDG 5 hopes to push the brewery’s boundaries of what’s expected. And with innovative beer created with interesting ingredients — like The Yam Dankee, made from 100 pounds of dried sweet potatoes and dark Belgian candy sugar — that mission is very much underway. Grant has even mused sampling a similar recipe using carrots. “My job is to make beer that people want to drink not just one, but a couple of,” Grant says. He tries to keep it simple — one ale yeast and one lager yeast — so the flavors of the ingredients really show. “My eye is always on drinkability,” he says. But drinks aren’t the only thing on tap in the BLDG 5. Its menu provides a variety of snacks and southern favorites. Its pickled eggs and sausages are great shareables for those sitting at the bar. For those who are working up an appetite, BLDG 5 will offer barbecue options from Lockhart Smokehouse, which also has a restaurant presence inside Texas Live! Its Smoked Tower, stacked house-smoked brisket, Kreuz sausage, coleslaw and barbecue sauce served in a hot brioche bun, provides heft while its Caesar salad prepared with smoked brisket burnt ends provides a lighter alternative. But the taproom also has original entrees that pack a punch. The Revolver’s Trunk Chili, a family recipe loaded with beef, beans and a secret ingredient, harks back to the brewery’s origins; Grant says the founder’s wife always brought her famous chili for lunch while the brewers were hard at work. Paired with the sweet and spicy cornbread, this warm and filling dish delivers all you’d expect from a comfort food favorite. So whether you put a spoonful of hot trunk chili in your mouth or sip on a crisp and carbonated ale, every flavor you taste in the BLDG 5 Tap Room tells the story of Revolver Brewing’s craft and creativity, which Grant says has been a long yet rewarding process. “It’s been a long time coming,” Grant expresses. “Eight years ago, we were breaking ground and moving dirt on a piece of property that would become Revolver Brewing. To think we’ve come this far is amazing.”

Herald Cafe Opens In Southlake Town Square After Market by Macy’s opened in Southlake Town Square in February, locals flocked to the new retail concept to browse through its curation of designers. But tucked in the new storefront stands Herald Cafe, a sleek bistro that’s worth the trip alone. Herald offers an array of snacks and lunch options for both shoppers and diners on the go. But thanks to its upscale environment, Herald provides an inviting destination calling people to stop and stay a while. Filled with posh furniture and homewares that are also available for purchase, Herald extends the stylish Market by Macy’s experience for its guests. Herald teamed up with Swoon Design in Dallas to create a homey yet modern environment that creates a calming vibe. And by working with former “Dallas Morning News” restaurant critic and consultant Leslie Brenner, the end result is a restaurant that’s truly representative of the area. Leslie evaluated local options to see what diners could be craving. Thanks to that research, Herald’s sophisticated menu boosts breakfast and lunch options including a ricotta jam toast, Shrimp Louie wedge salad and Texas caviar served with Gloria’s tortilla chips. “I dined around the restaurants in Southlake Town Square, studied the whole area to see what was available and tried to imagine what people must be missing,” Leslie says. “I wanted it to be a menu where everything is small, but everything looks good. So hopefully you can look at it and say, ‘Next time I come, I’ll have that.’” Leslie also helped craft a tight wine menu that features six bottles — four of which are Texan varietals. So it’s easy to enjoy a casual glass of a Texas sparkling or rosé while enjoying quality company and the beautiful scene. For those interested in a quality cup of joe, Herald also offers drinks made with beans from Oak Cliff Coffee Roasters. Or enjoy a Texas-based craft soda with a cold drink from Dublin Soda Company. But those aren’t the only local vendors represented at Herald. Zaki Tea, Live Love Pop, Encanto Pops and The Jelly Queens also have products available for purchase.

Reykjavik, Iceland Few places are as isolated as Reykjavik, Iceland. Rent a campervan on Ring Road and sleep alone under the stars alongside Reykjavik’s tranquil countryside. The morning after, drive to the Blue Lagoon and swim in its steamy hot springs. When you’re done, head inside the retreat and experience a rejuvenating spa that revitalizes your skin using silica, algae and minerals. The best Icelandic lambs, fish and hot dogs Reykjavik has to offer can also be sampled on its tasty food tours. Adventure seekers can explore one of many expansive ice caves, snorkel in the Silfra fissure or watch for colossal whales and adorable puffins. You might even witness the Northern Lights from Thingvellir National Park late at night if you’re lucky.

Queenstown, New Zealand New Zealand’s Queenstown also provides plenty of outdoor adventures. For starters, there’s an abundance of black sand beaches and fjordfilled national parks, so there’s no shame in just wandering alone for a day and seeing where the island takes you. There are activities perfectly suited for solo excursions with the AJ Hackett Bungee company, such as bungee jumping off of the cliffs or riding the Nevis Swing, the world’s largest at 300 meters. You can hike Coronet Peak and ski or snowboard on its slippery slopes, or dive downhill 800 meters in the exhilarating Skyline Luge. When you’re done, hop into the Skyline Gondola by yourself and go back up to the top of Bob’s Peak and experience the fun all over again.

Glacier National Park, Montana If you want to escape into the outdoors, look no further than Glacier National Park in Montana. This sprawling million-acre national park is teeming with 175 mountains and over 745 miles of hiking trails, with even more wildlife to populate it. Start by renting out a single cabin or lodge for a comfortable stay, or pitch your own tent at one of its 13 solitudinous camping grounds. When you’re ready to hit the park, you can traverse through the illustrious 6,646-foot Logan Pass, stroll through the 3,200 colorful flower species in the garden wall, or hop on a bike and speed past Sun Road. When you’re done with all of the excitement, it’s easy to relax alone with a book in your cabin or campsite. Or you could stoke a campfire — after all, those s'mores aren’t going to make themselves. home STYLE Bringing The Outside In With Houseplants
W
hether you have been a proud plant parent for years or are just now gaining an interest for greenery, these living design elements have only grown in popularity over the past few seasons. And now that spring is alive and well, now’s the perfect time to experiment with your first plant. Those intrigued by houseplants can either make a splash with an indoor tree or start out small with an easy-care fern. No matter which direction you take, one thing is certain: Plants are sure to bring some life back into your space.
FIDDLE FIDDLE You may have seen them on Instagram, but now you can get the look in your space by investing in a fiddle-leaf fig. Known for its large violin-shaped leaves, this plant can grow up to 6 feet tall, creating a calming yet eye-catching focal point for your home. The fiddle-leaf fig does best with moist air and consistent light, so to ensure it has a long life, prop it up next to a larger window, and water it when the soil is dry to the touch. With a little time and attention, these plants can offer years of delight.
SNEAKY SNAKE For a plant that is tough and tolerable to most indoor conditions (aka it’s harder to kill), invest in a snake plant. With thick, upright leaves, these plants are perfect for small spaces that just need a little boost. And they add new levels to a room thanks to their striking lines. Snake plants are used to drier climates, so as long as they don’t get watered too much, they’re sure to have a happy life wherever you put them. Quick tip: If you are selecting a snake plant to take home from the nursery, choose the one with dark leaves, as paler varieties may be trying to tell you they are already in trouble.
HOME PARADISE For a tropical variety that will thrive in your Texas abode, the bird of paradise plant is for you. This large, leafy creature splays and takes up a good amount of space when it is fully grown. And while it is rare, this green plant can flower indoors, resulting in vibrant orange crane-like buds. Native to South Africa, bird of paradise plants require direct sunlight and weekly watering, so prop it up next to a window, and create a schedule to ensure it has a healthy life.

Letting Go of Stuff
M
inimalism is everywhere these days. Whether it is fashion or home decor or design aesthetics, everyone is jumping on the “less is more” bandwagon. Maybe it is an idea whose time has come because we are drowning in our possessions. I am no exception. A love for travel, a pack rat mentality inherited from my family and a nostalgic streak has combined to make my house a veritable flea market. Add a dislike for throwing away perfectly good things in working condition to that and you have a potential recipe for disaster. I don’t recall what prompted the need for a change, but it could have been the avalanche of empty Amazon boxes stacked to the ceiling in the sunroom that knocked me down recently, along with the realization that every one of them represented an additional item in the house. I found myself wondering why we collect so much stuff and why we find it so hard to let it go, even when we know we don’t really need it. The answer, it appears, lies in human evolution. Survival for humans depended on their ability to gather and store foods for lean times. So there was an evolutionary advantage for those who were good at it. In more modern times, a display of one’s wealth (and health) demonstrated one’s suitability as a life mate. Collecting, in its most primitive form, was critical to the continuation of the hu-
man race and gave us a sense of security. This has morphed into a consumer culture through which we have come to be defined by our possessions. It has been proven that acquiring things we like tends to light up the pleasure centers of our brain. “Retail therapy” is real. Unfortunately, its effects are temporary. Hence, we are filled with the need to go out and get more time and time again. The reason we find it difficult to give things up is because our brains remember the pleasure associated with acquiring them. Other factors like social conscience, nostalgia and natural parsimony give us more reasons to hold on to things long after their need has lapsed. So how do we let go? The trick is to create a situation where there is greater pleasure in giving up an item than there is in keeping it. We need to find a reason why letting it go is better for us in the long run. Whether it is donating, re-selling or even simply throwing it in the trash, if doing so meets a need associated with a cause or value that we hold dear, it will be that much easier to move forward with that action. Find your why. Whether it is making room for a baby, setting up a home business, moving in with someone, downsizing or simply the pleasure of an organized and clean home, letting go of things you don’t need will make you happier and may even put some money in your pocket. What’s not to love about that?
