Well, Hello There! Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Audrey Sellers and I’m Southlake Style’s editor. For the past year, I’ve had the privilege to edit this incredible publication. I’ve worked alongside our publisher, Mike Tesoriero, and the rest of our talented team to ensure this magazine captures the spirit of Southlake every month. One of the great joys of stepping into my role as editor is knowing there’s always a fantastic story just around the corner. Serving up interesting content is simple when the community is brimming with outstanding people. We’ve handpicked just a few of them to spotlight in our annual Tastemakers feature. The half dozen individuals you’ll meet starting on page 25 stand out for their community contributions (if not their impeccable style). Holly Morgan, who was one of our Tastemakers in 2014, graces our pages once again—this time as the reigning Miss Southlake. What impresses me most about Holly is how much she embraces life. This Carroll senior seems to do it all: She’s a skating, drumming, baking, running, surfing pageant queen who has managed to write a book while balancing schoolwork. She’s competing for the title of Miss Texas this summer, and I know she’ll make Southlake proud. She already has. This issue is filled with stylish people who make it look easy. Style, in fact, does come easy when it arrives at your doorstep. You’ve probably heard about subscription box services such as Stitch Fix and Birchbox (one of my favorites), and maybe you even have a box or two arrive at your house each month. We polled readers on SouthlakeStyle.com and learned that nearly half (43 percent) of you have tried a subscription box. Flip to page 57 to peek inside a few of them, whether you’re looking for a hand in faith, family life or fashion. While the concept of style is constantly evolving, what you’ll find in the pages of Southlake Style remains the same. We are ever committed to covering the people and happenings that make our city so special. It’s an honor to have the opportunity to kick off each issue through this letter, and I sincerely hope you enjoy the stories ahead. Happy reading,

Audrey Sellers | Editor Audrey@SouthlakeStyle.com

THE WHITE ALBUM WEEZER APRIL 1

Good Vibrations Weezer’s new self-titled album, also known as The White Album, is the band’s tenth studio album release. The Westside of Los Angeles has been the band’s home since its inception. It is the people and places of those neighborhoods that inspired the songs for the new album, which has a Beach Boys’ vibe according to Rivers Cuomo, lead singer, guitarist and principal songwriter. The band’s sound remains the same, but with songs like “Thank God for Girls” and “Endless Bummer,” listeners are immersed in the sights and sounds of SoCal.

LOVE THAT BOY RON FOURNIER APRIL 12 Raising a Rounded Child It all comes down to what’s most important in raising a child. As a parent, you want your child to excel, whether this means receiving academic scholarships or being named MVP. However, in his new book, Love That Boy: What Two Presidents, Eight Road Trips and My Son Taught Me About a Parent’s Expectations, author Ron Fournier concedes that we don’t always focus on what matters more—character building. Fournier intertwines personal experiences, stories from other families, and the latest childhood development research to explore the concept of outsized parental expectations.

THE JUNGLE BOOK

GAME OF THRONES

HBO APRIL 24

There May be “Worry and Strife” Disney’s new production of The Jungle Book is not for the faint of heart. After seeing the just-released trailer for the live action production during the Super Bowl, the first thing that came to mind was, this is a Disney movie? We all remember Walt’s animated 1967 classic. It was a story told through Mowgli’s interactions with seemingly domesticated versions of jungle fauna. Although the 2016 version weaves the same tale, the scenes between Mowgli and the animals—not as domesticated— are more real and a lot more intense.

Game On Season 6 of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” is set to bring viewers right back to their favorite world of violence and treachery. The Emmy-winning fantasy series returns after a long winter break that left faithful followers in the lurch about the characters they’ve learned to love and hate—well, at least the ones that made it through Season 5. Unfortunately as of press time, HBO was still keeping under wraps what to expect in the new season, but we did find out that Bran would be back!

EMERALD BELLES TOOK HOME TOP HONORS AT STATE COMPETITION There’s no dancing around it: the Emerald Belles are topnotch. At the ShowMaker State competition at Texas State University in February, the Carroll Senior High School Emerald Belles placed first in high kick, first in jazz and first in lyrical. Additionally, they were awarded Overall Entertainment, Creative Costuming, Judge’s Award, and Outstanding Choreography, Showmanship, Technique and Precision in all three dances. They also were named in Line of Champions of the contest and second place overall in division. The Belles are under the direction of Melissa Page and assisted by Kathryn Dobrow. Visit SouthlakeStyle.com to see the Belles’ complete list of accolades. COME SIP, SHOP AND ROCK AT PARK VILLAGE Park Village is celebrating its grand opening in a big way—with its Sip, Shop and Rock event benefitting the Miracle League of Southlake. The party gets underway at 5 p.m. April 16 and includes food and drink samples, cooking demonstrations, giveaways, exclusive discounts, VIP swag bags and more. The night culminates in a free concert from the Gin Blossoms. Admission is free, but only 2,000 concert tickets are available. Get yours at ParkVillage.Ticketbud.com. For $20, you can also get a VIP ticket (limited number available) benefitting the Miracle League. VIP ticket holders will be treated to a plethora of activities and giveaways from participating retailers. SAVE THE DATE FOR DOGS AND CARS FUNDRAISING EVENT Love cool cars? Have a heart for helping homeless animals? Then head out to the second annual Dogs and Cars fundraising event. Scheduled for April 9 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Forest Park Medical Center in Southlake, the free event has it all: food, drinks, games and a silent auction. Oh, and there will also be plenty of adorable, adoptable dogs, and a sweet car show. Four DFW nonprofit rescues will be on hand with furry friends in need of a good home. All funds raised at the event will be divided among the rescues. Last year’s Dogs and Cars raised more than $3,000 and 11 dogs were adopted into their forever homes. If it’s rained out, the event will be rescheduled for April 30.

GRACE ANNOUNCED 2016 GALA CHAIRS Ashley and Andy Cunningham are high school sweethearts who are dedicated to giving back. They’re so invested in GRACE particularly, that the nonprofit has proclaimed the Cunninghams as the 2016 GRACE Gala Chairs. Planned for October 22 at the Irving Convention Center, the GRACE Gala is the organization’s single most important fundraising event of the year. The Cunninghams will play an instrumental role in overseeing the event, making sure everything functions seamlessly to result in a memorable and beneficial evening. “GRACE’s family-based approach and reputation initially sparked our interest,” said Andy. “As our participation in the GRACE Gala and Drive Into the Night grew, so did our love for GRACE’s mission to help families in a lasting way.” The Cunninghams will kick off their first Gala Committee meeting April 11 at 9:30 a.m. in the GRACE Boardroom at GRACE Main. JOIN IN JAZZ AT THE OASIS, HELP SUPPORT BAND AIDE Mark your calendars for Sunday, April 10—the Carroll Senior High School Jazz Band is playing a concert at the Oasis in Carillon. The community is invited to bring their picnic blankets and lawn chairs, and settle in from 2 to 4 p.m. for an outdoor concert on the lawn. Although it’s free to attend, the Leadership Southlake Class 2015-2016 hopes to raise funds for Band Aide. The goal is to bring in $20,000 that would be donated to CISD middle schools for purchasing much-need instruments for their band programs. Sponsorships are available at three levels and start at $100.

SOUTHLAKE FIRE DEPARTMENT CELEBRATED 50TH ANNIVERSARY The Southlake Fire Department celebrated its golden anniversary last month. For 50 years, the fire department has been serving the City of Southlake, and on March 5, the community came together to say thanks and to celebrate. An Open House kicked off at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Southlake DPS Headquarters. There was plenty of family fun for people of all ages: a bounce house, balloon artist, clowns, face painting, station tours, extrication demonstration and vehicle displays. The crowd also enjoyed hot dogs, chips and drinks, and the first 100 kids received a free t-shirt.

TWO LIBERTY CHRISTIAN STUDENTS NAMED NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP FINALISTS More than 1.5 million students took the PSAT/NMSQT qualifying test, and only 15,000 students emerged as Finalists. Two of those students happen to be local: Caleb Allison and Kenneth Wong are Liberty Christian National Merit Semifinalists who advanced as Finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program, an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. The selection of some 7,400 Merit Scholarship winners from the group of Finalists is now in progress. Last month, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) mailed scholarship offers to winners and their school principals. Four major news announcements of Merit Scholar designees will be made by NMSC starting this month through July.

CARROLL STUDENT WON SECOND PLACE IN CONCERTO COMPETITION Sally Hatfield, a freshman at Southlake Carroll, was the second-place winner of the Lone Star Youth Orchestra’s Concerto Competition. Based in Irving, the Lone Star Youth Orchestra is the only tuition-free youth orchestra in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. It consists of middle school and high school students from 14 Metroplex school districts. Hatfield plays French horn under the direction of Jay Bach. He said, “I would certainly like to congratulate Sally on this fine accomplishment and wish her the best. Sally has a bright future and is a valued member of the Wind Symphony.”

THE GATEHOUSE CELEBRATED ONE YEAR WITH OPEN HOUSE FESTIVITIES When The Gatehouse opened March 26, 2015, it had a purpose to provide a safe refuge for women and children in crisis. The nonprofit is delivering on its promise, having assisted 38 families and 59 children. Last month, The Gatehouse invited the community to celebrate its first year of helping families and changing lives. Since September 2015, more than 800 volunteers have completed the one-hour volunteer training, and more than 7,000 hours of volunteer time have been logged. The Gatehouse expects to admit an additional 58 families this year to reach a full capacity of 96 families. CARROLL INDOOR PERCUSSION HEADED TO REGIONAL COMPETITION Carroll Indoor Percussion drummed up another accolade last month: The ensemble took home second place at the North Texas Colorguard Association (NTCA) percussion show. This was the second time the ensemble, which is underthedirectionofDavidWalker, placedsecondinitsfirst year of Open Class competition. But the group isn’t resting on its laurels. Shortly after that victory, Carroll Indoor Percussion headed to Bowling Green, Kentucky, to compete in the regional competition.

LOCAL GIRL SCOUT TROOP FEATURED ON NEWS SEGMENT Girl Scout Troop #4005, comprised of many students from Durham Intermediate, saw a need in the community and found a way to help. After touring a local animal shelter, they decided to make brightly colored vests to make the dogs more visible to potential adopters. They hope their service project will help shelter dogs find good homes, and through the project, they’re also working toward the Bronze Award, the highest award a Girl Scout Junior can achieve. Fox 4 news anchor Clarice Tinsley recently interviewed the girls for her “Hometown Heroes” segment. “The girls were super excited to hear Clarice Tinsley wanted to feature them on her segment,” said troop leader, Shannan Needleman, R.N. “They are now a part of her 21-year tradition, which is a neat legacy to leave behind from your Girl Scout experience.” The troop will donate the vests at the second annual Dogs and Cars event April 9.

SOUTHLAKE LANDED IN MIDDLE OF SAFEST CITIES LIST Credit Donkey released its annual report on the safest cities in the second largest state in the nation. Colleyville topped the list, followed by Trophy Club at No. 2. Southlake ranked at No. 28. Keller ranked eighth on the list, followed locally by Flower Mound. Coppell landed at No. 24. “The affluent Ft. Worth suburb of Colleyville easily rose to the top of our rankings with just 10 violent crime reports registered for all of 2014,” Credit Donkey’s report said of Colleyville. And for Trophy Club, the site reported: “Trophy Club comes in at No. 2 on our list, with zero murders or robberies reported in 2014.” “Southlake is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, and it’s one of the area’s more affluent suburban communities. Southlake’s police department takes a decidedly hands-on approach to fighting crime, with residents getting the opportunity to personally know the district sergeant who represents their neighborhood. Officers will even conduct a home security inspection to help you spot potential weak points in and around your property,” the report says of Southlake. WESTLAKE ACADEMY EARNED TITLE AS 2015 HONOR ROLL SCHOOL Educational Results Partnership and the Institute for Productivity in Education selected Westlake Academy as one of 713 public schools in Texas to receive the title of 2015 Honor Roll school. GRAPEVINE CRAFT BREWERY REFRESHED ITS MONARCH BEER When it comes to mainstays at Grapevine Craft Brewery (GCB), Monarch is up there. Formerly a filtered wheat beer, Monarch was one of the first beers released by GCB in 2014. Last month, the classic brew got new branding and new style, officially going from a filtered wheat beer to a Pilsner. “We’ve decided to give our fans what they really want and take the guess work out of it. The wheat beer that drinks like a pilsner is now … wait for it — a Pilsner! Genius,” according to GCB.

ZYN22 RIDES INTO SOUTHLAKE THIS MONTH For those who wished the boutique cycling studio would come to Southlake, you’re in luck. The company announced that its third and newest location will open at Southlake Boulevard and Kimball Avenue in April. ZYN22’s premium classes combine cardio and weight training to create 45-minute, high-energy classes that feature dancing, upbeat music and inspiration from energetic instructors. “We set out to create an environment and attract a staff that make every ZYN22 class as fun as it is challenging,” said Mark Page, Chairman, ZYN22. Mel Page, co-founder and instructor, said: “We’re not just another spin class, and everyone who clicks into a bike with us leaves feeling stronger than when they arrived.” Each class includes guided instruction to encourage beginners and challenge experts to push their limits—all while having a great time and burning calories.

Southlake Style’s annual Tastemakers recognition is a spotlight on those people who help make Southlake a first-rate community. Christopher Archer To get a better understanding of why Christopher Archer wanted to get involved with Carroll ISD, you might need to do a little math. Between he and his wife, Stacey, the Archers have five children, all of whom have gone through or are going through the district. Considering that his children started in Southlake’s school system in 1998 and the youngest will graduate in 2019, that’s more than 20 years of having a Dragon in the household. Five children, 21 years—that’s a lot of PTO meetings and open houses. It’s also given Archer, president of the Carroll ISD Board of Trustees, a firsthand look at what a phenomenal job the school district is doing. “There’s a good administration, quality programs; there’s not a need for a lot of change,” says Archer. Rather, “I wanted to be a part of adding to the success. It doesn’t matter how many National Merit Scholars you have, you still want to improve.” In addition to meeting with the Board every other Monday, Archer attends schoolrelated events throughout the week— lunches, banquets, programs, sporting events and more—in part to show the school board’s support but also because Archer wants to stay connected to the schools he represents. Not to mention the fact that Archer, who is president and owner of Associated Time & Parking Controls, and Stacey are involved in local charities including the GRACE Gala (for which they were chairs two years ago), the Bob Jones Nature Center “Naturally Sweet” fundraiser (also which they co-chaired), Miracle League, Art in the Square and the Carroll Education Foundation, on which Archer serves as an Advisor. But giving back is important to the Archers. “We feel Southlake has been such a great place to raise kids,” he says. Although, with just 24 hours a day and seven days a week, even Archer sometimes has trouble adding it all up and finding enough time. “We might need to learn to say no a little more often,” he admits. But somehow we doubt he will.

If you’ve had the pleasure to dine at Del Frisco’s Grille in Southlake, you’ve probably been greeted at your table by a warm, friendly woman with a British accent. Gemma Brady, the restaurant’s London-born general manager, makes it a point to stop by and say hello to guests, many of whom the Southlake resident has come to know. The Southlake-based Del Frisco’s Restaurant Group, which operates 51 restaurants around the country, reminds its employees that they are in the people business, serving food, and not the other way around. But that’s something that Brady needs little reminder of. Having grown up with parents in the restaurant and hotel businesses, serving others has been a part of her life for as long as she can remember. “Hospitality is definitely my calling,” she says. In addition to bringing the community into Del Frisco’s Grille, Brady strives to ensure that the restaurant also reaches out to the community it serves. Every Friday, she reviews the myriad donation requests that come in from schools and charity groups, identifying the opportunities to best make an impact in the community. “We have a pretty big budget for donating to the community,” she admits. “But if we have to miss one event for a school for one quarter, I try to be sure to work with them another time.” Brady is a mom (she and her husband have four young children between them), so she knows how important it is to work with schools and other local organizations in town. “What sets Southlake apart from other places is the sense of community here,” she says. Even the “competition,” she admits, likes to work together. “The other restaurants here are not our competition; they’re our friends,” she says. “We get calls from them to borrow something or to just see what’s going on. “Southlake is just this quaint, little place,” she adds. “The schools, the education—everything is phenomenal.”

Kari Mawn

Let’s first get something straight about Kari Mawn: When friends call her “the party mom,” they’re not implying that you might see her dancing on tables. Rather, Mawn is more than likely decorating those tables for worthwhile causes around the community. “I have a decorating problem,” admits Mawn, a mother of three. “I love to decorate for events and fundraisers.” She’s put her design talents to work on everything from teacher’s luncheons to lacrosse banquets to even her tennis pro’s wedding. And in fact, it was Mawn who, two years ago, started TableTops in order to raise money for the needy. After hearing from a friend that a local charity was not going to get all the bikes it needed to distribute to children in need, Mawn came up with an idea to create an event featuring—not surprisingly—beautifully decorated, sponsored tables at a luncheon and auction that could help raise money for the bikes. She approached Mike Hutchison at the Southlake Hilton first, garnering his support and securing the room, and then put out a Facebook call for help, which brought more than 40 women on board in less than 24 hours. In its first year, TableTops raised $35,000—more than enough to purchase the needed bikes for children. “In Southlake, we hear of a need and we pull together,” says Mawn, who admits that it was emotionally gratifying to see so many volunteers come together in such a short amount of time—30 days—to make TableTops successful that first year. Last year, with more time and more volunteers on board, they raised more than $80,000 for local charities. “So much of life happens at special events like holidays or parties,” says Mawn. “I just like to make them beautiful.”

Michelle Moore As director of foundations for the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), Michelle Moore has raised millions of dollars to fund programs on the premise that “a mind is a terrible thing to waste but a wonderful thing to invest in.” Now, in her role as a Trustee for Carroll ISD, she is using her experience and talent so that the youth in our community are positioned to achieve excellence today and for years to come. “One of the reasons I wanted to serve on the school board and have dedicated my career to building better futures through education was largely due to my parents instilling the value of education at an early age,” says Moore. “Both of them immigrated to the U.S. from Cuba as teenagers. Both enrolled in college, but never finished. I am a first-generation college graduate in my family, and for that, I will be forever indebted to my parents for all the sacrifices they made.” A quality education for her own children—her daughter, Katie, is 13 and her son, Harrison, is 10—is what brought Moore and her husband, Brandon, to Southlake 11 years ago. Moore says she feels blessed to be living here and gives back to the community through her extensive volunteering. In addition to her role on the school board, she has served on the Carroll Elementary PTO board, is co-chair of teacher grants for SAGAT (Southlake Association for the Gifted and Talented), and serves as an advisor for the Carroll Education Foundation. She’s also involved in the National Charity League and Odyssey of the Mind. And yes, she still works a full-time job at the UNCF. Moore recalls filling out a get-to-knowyou questionnaire for the National Charity League. “There was a funny question on the form: If you had a warning label, what would it say,” recalls Moore. “I wrote, ‘will volunteer for anything.’” So why does this busy working mom stay so involved? Says Moore, “I heard a quote at a UNCF conference that really spoke to me about why I do what I do: ‘The true meaning of life is to plant trees under whose shade you do not expect to sit.’”

You could say that Officer Diron Hill wears many hats—both figuratively and literally. On any given Friday, you might find him wearing wigs or funny hats in his role as school resource officer (SRO) at Eubanks Intermediate School. It wasn’t part of the job description when he signed on to be SRO, but Hill wants the students at Eubanks to see the more human side of police officers. As an SRO in Carroll ISD, it’s an officer’s job to provide a safe campus and environment for students and teachers. But that’s only a small part of their role, Hill explains. “It’s not just about walking around, checking doors and looking for suspicious people,” he says. “The most important part of our job is to build relationships with the kids in our community. We want them to trust police officers, to confide in them, to be able to go to them in a time of need.” So Hill, a semi-retired former police chief, makes it a point to have lunch or play sports with the students and to talk to them about what’s going on in their lives. He also created a citizenship award that’s handed out each month to a student, nominated by a teacher, who has shown good character, such as one recent recipient who stepped in and took action when he felt another student was being bullied. And when it came time to help raise money for the Carroll Education Foundation, Hill offered up his time, providing auction items including “SRO for a Day,” a chance for kids to work alongside Hill for the day, and a flag football game and pizza party at Dragon Stadium that he hosted. Hill is thankful that Southlake has empowered him to get creative in his role as an SRO. “Southlake has done the right thing with the SRO program,” says Hill. “It really should be a pilot program for all schools in the U.S.”

Robert Talamantez On his first week on the job as General Manager at Brio Tuscan Grille, Robert Talamantez received many welcome greetings from guests. There’s one that he remembers in particular, though. “I had the opportunity to meet Brian Stebbins on our terrace and he said it the best: ‘You are now part of the Southlake family.’ That was such a warm, genuine welcome to the great city of Southlake,” recalls Talamantez of the late developer from Cooper & Stebbins, the firm that conceived and developed Southlake Town Square. Indeed, it’s been Talamantez’s goal to make Brio a part of the community. In addition to partnering with charitable foundations such as Kids Matter International, Guzman 23 Foundation, Art in the Square and Wounded Warriors (to name just a few), the restaurant also does lunch drop-offs to local firefighters and police stations on Labor Day. “We are grateful to be able to touch people’s lives inside and outside of the restaurant,” Talamantez says. “Known as a community restaurant, Brio believes in giving back.” And the community, it seems, has embraced Brio as well. “Brio has always had that hometown restaurant feel. You often run into your friends, school teachers and business associates,” Talamantez says. “We are privileged in hosting many family get-togethers during the holiday season and throughout the year.” Talamantez, who has been in the restaurant business for 23 years, admits that being in this industry has transformed him from a shy kid from Snyder, Texas, to an executive whose main job is dealing with people. “I remember my first mentor stating, ‘You will learn a lot about yourself and other people in this industry—more than any other industry out there,’” recalls Talamantez. “He was correct.”

SECOND APPEARANCE Give your skin a second chance.

C

al Brown knew there was a need for a safe, pain-free tattoo removal in Southlake, so he recently opened Second Appearance. The only facility of its kind in Texas, Second Appearance specializes in tattoo removal and skin rejuvenation. Its state-of-the-art tattoo removal treatment PicoWay™ is only used in five other facilities nationwide, and Second Appearance is the only facility in the entire state of Texas to offer the breakthrough treatment.

Exponentially Better Tattoo and Spot Removal

One in six Americans with tattoos wishes they could have them removed. And while laser technology has been a safe and effective tattoo removal method for years, the painful treatment options have scared many into sticking with their unwanted ink. Introducing PicoWay: a genuine game changer in laser tattoo removal. PicoWay is the most comfortable tattoo removal system on the market. Treatments by traditional lasers produce more heat, which can spread throughout the surrounding tissue and cause considerable discomfort. PicoWay’s ultra-fast laser pulses minimize any discomfort, and on average, remove tattoos in half the time of traditional lasers. Some laser systems can’t completely break down certain colored inks, but PicoWay is so fast and powerful (1,000 times faster than traditional lasers) that it can remove the most stubborn reds, greens and blues. And the unparalleled precision of PicoWay allows its professional laser technician Alexa Hagen to tailor your treatment to your exact specifications. She can remove a tattoo in its entirety or just the part you don’t like. And to honor troops both past and present, Second Appearance offers a 30-percent military discount on all tattoo removal services. The PicoWay system can also effectively remove unwanted spots of naturally occurring pigment such as age spots, freckles, melasma, café au lait spots and more. And since it is safe to use on the broadest range of skin types, it is the clear choice for clear skin.

"PICOWAY TATTOO REMOVAL OFFERS MAXIMUM RESULTS WITH MINIMAL RISK, AND IS THE ONLY FACILITY OF ITS KIND IN THE ENTIRE STATE OF TEXAS.”

Additional Skin Rejuvenation Services Offered

Second Appearance offers a variety of skin rejuvenation options for different parts of the body that are relaxing and pain-free using EndyMed™ Pro 3DEEP treatments. 3DEEP iFine tightens delicate skin tissue around the eyes, mouth, neck, arms and knees. 3DEEP Body Shaping produces smoother curves, tighter skin and reduces cellulite in larger areas such as the abdomen, flanks, buttocks and thighs. 3DEEP Intensif radio frequency Microneedle Skin Remodeling treats active acne and oily skin, and reduces deep wrinkles and stretch marks, while 3DEEP Intensif radio frequency Microneedle Scar Revision reduces and improves the appearance of scars. Giving Back is Second Nature

Raised by parents who were always actively involved in the community (American Heart Association and Harris HEB), it was only fitting that Tommy followed suit. The Tommy Pennington Realty Group supports many Carroll ISD schools and teams, the Carroll Education Foundation, National Charity League (which his wife and daughters, Mattison and Emma, are involved), Southlake Chamber of Commerce, White’s Chapel UMC and GRACE. Holly Morgan

distinctly remembers the

moment she knew she wanted to be a beauty queen. She was six years old and folding clothes with her mom while they watched a pageant on TV. As contestants strutted across the stage in their bejeweled gowns, she looked up and said: “I want to be that.” She’s certainly well on her way. Last October, Morgan was crowned Miss Southlake, and this summer she’ll compete to win the title of Miss Texas at the 81st Miss Texas Scholarship Competition. The winner will go on to represent our state in the Miss America pageant, which is exactly where the 18-year-old Carroll senior hopes to be one day. “I don’t know if it will be next year or years from now, but I want to be Miss America,” she says. Morgan is one of the approximately 2.5 million girls who compete in more than 100,000 beauty pageants each year in the United States, according to Statistic Brain. She began competing in pageants about five years ago, and last year she was the first runner-up for Miss Texas Outstanding Teen. It’s not the glitzy dresses or the glamour of the crown that she loves about pageant life;

it’s the people she meets along the way. “My favorite part of the job is seeing all of the smiles,” she says. “I love talking to anyone, no matter their age, and I could not be more humbled to represent such an incredible community.” LIFE AS MISS SOUTHLAKE Morgan’s platform as Miss Southlake is titled “Beautiful You: Shining From the Inside Out.” She visits schools, clubs and organizations locally and throughout the

adorned in her sash and crown, at school and city events such as the homecoming parade and Breakfast with Santa. Morgan also connects with the community outside the public forum. She offers appearances at little girls’ birthday parties, bringing a bit of the Miss Southlake magic to the day. Wearing a full ball gown, she’ll celebrate with the birthday girl and friends with activities ranging from tea parties to princess games. “I strive to help people of all ages love themselves for who they are,” she says. “We were not meant to be the same, and we should love the things that make us unique.”

44

Morgan is so passionate about helping people feel confident in their own skin that she wrote a book on it. Called Beautiful You, her book explores topics ranging from how to get into a healthy mindset to recipes for healthy living. For now, she hands out copies at her community appearances, but she’s hopeful the book will be offered on Amazon soon. Not many high-school students (or adults for that matter) have a published book to their name. It wasn’t anything Morgan set out to do; it just sort of happened. “I was never much of a writing type,” she admits. “But when I was thinking of all the things I wanted to present in class, I started typing and then kept going. It’s actually been a great way for me to share with people without having to talk for hours.” For someone who has a lot to say on the topic of uniqueness, it’s not surprising that Morgan models her own message. Not only is she a beauty queen who wrote a book, but she’s also a drummer, ice skater, surfer and runner. She’s not trying to conform to any particular mold—she’s proudly (and quite successfully) doing her own thing. “I never want to leave this world thinking I could have done more,” she says. “I do most of the things I do because I listen to my heart.” MORE THAN JUST A PRETTY FACE At an age when most children are doodling with crayons, Morgan was learning to make music on the drums. She picked up her first set of drumsticks at age two and has been feeling the beat ever since. Her father, Roger, who’s also a drum enthusiast, taught her to play. And when Morgan began thinking of an uncommon talent she could showcase at pageants, she knew it had to be drumming. “I wanted to do something that stood out and not everybody was doing,” she says. “I decided I could come up with something on the drums. My dad is helping me. He’s the best coach I could ask for.” Drumming is Morgan’s official pageant talent, but it’s definitely not the only skill she rocks. Before she entered the world of beauty pageants, Morgan was a talented ice skater. She took to the ice at eight years old, eventually skating competitively and accruing a dozen gold medals. But after five years of fine-tuning her moves on the ice, Morgan decided to hang up her skates—competitively, at least. 45

“I wanted to ice skate more as a hobby,” she says. “It was fun, and I learned hard work at a young age.” Where there’s ice, there’s water. And for Morgan, the best kind of water is the kind with crashing waves. She’s a Texan who surfs, and although Southlake is hundreds of miles from any surf-worthy beach, Morgan immerses herself in the sport whenever she gets the chance. She and her dad travel to California a few times each year to ride the waves. It took her about a week to get up on the board, and then she was hooked. She even has dreams of becoming a professional surfer one day. “I love surfing so much. I feel like I’m half mermaid,” she gushes. “It’s a stress reliever for me.” LOOKING AHEAD With the Miss Texas pageant only a couple months away, Morgan is sticking to dry land. These days, she shops when she feels stressed, and she recently started baking whenever she has spare time. “That’s a new hobby I’m trying to prepare myself for college,” she says. Morgan commits to exercising regularly (maybe to balance all the baking she’s been doing) and hits the pavement almost daily. “It’s crazy, but I love to run,” she says. She also reads and watches the news to stay educated on current events. Oh, and don’t forget Morgan is a senior set to graduate in June. When asked how she manages it all, she credits her organizational skills, which interestingly, are rather old-school. “I have to write stuff in my calendar or I forget about it,” she admits. The upcoming pageant isn’t just Morgan’s shot at the crown; her younger sister, Katie, is competing for the title of Miss Texas Outstanding Teen. The 14-yearold was crowned Miss Grapevine’s Outstanding Teen on the same day that Morgan was crowned Miss Southlake. And now these sisters are out to conquer Texas … together. Morgan wouldn’t have it any other way. She says, “It has been so fun getting to share this experience with Katie. I know I have learned and grown tremendously, and I am so excited for her wonderful journey to come. I am extremely proud of her.” Some of the wisdom she hopes to impart to her sister wasn’t gleaned at a pageant, but at a pop concert.

46

Morgan remembers Taylor Swift telling the crowd at a concert that she was bullied every day in middle school and high school. “But now look at her. She’s one of the most famous singers out there,” Morgan says. “People will try to bring you down and tell you you’re not good enough, but don’t let that stop you. Reach for your dreams and never give up.” Whatever unfolds at the Miss Texas pageant this summer and at pageants to come, there’s one thing we know for sure: Morgan isn’t afraid to dream big. We first acknowledged her ambition when we spotlighted her as one of our Tastemakers in the April 2014 edition of Southlake Style. Even then, she knew she wanted to earn an MBA at Harvard Business School and take an entrepreneurial path, one day opening her own wedding planning business. Morgan also has big aspirations for motherhood down the line, envisioning a bustling family life with a houseful of kids. “I want to be a mom of 10 kids. Yes, that’s right—10,” she laughs. “I love kids more than anything in this world, and I hope to be able to adopt many children, as well as have some of my own.” Whoever said beauty is only skin deep hasn’t met Holly Morgan. This pageant queen has a heart as big as her personal ambitions. “I hope to leave a legacy that being yourself is the most beautiful thing one could ever be,” she says. It’s indeed a lovely wish from a lovely person, inside and out.

A Kitchen Command Center MEET THE NEW SMART APPLIANCE FROM SAMSUNG: THE FAMILY HUB REFRIGERATOR.

P

icking the kids up from school in the afternoon can be a challenge. You have to navigate the carpool line, load kids, soccer cleats and French horns, and still maintain your sanity on the drive home. Then the questions begin: What’s there to eat? What time is my band concert tonight? You head across the room to check the fridge for afterschool consumables. The calendar displayed on the 21.5-inch full HD LCD touchscreen of the refrigerator tells you what is planned for snack and dinner, and allows you to check the calendar for the concert start time. It may not have been your idea to create the Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator, but you could have told someone a long time ago that a smart appliance like this would do wonders for home management and connectivity. Giving the whole family access to information in one central location is an item you can check off your “things I need in my life” list. The Hub is controlled through a smartphone app, which allows you to post and update calendars, and select photos to share all on one screen located on the upper right of the exterior door. And what parent doesn’t want to showcase their child’s artwork on the fridge? With the app and the Hub, you can use photos of the artwork and even rotate each child’s masterpiece weekly or daily. But let’s not forget the Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator is a kitchen appliance as well. The four-door fridge is equipped with Samsung-exclusive FlexZone technology that transforms from fridge to freezer, and the Triple and Metal cooling system keeps food fresh. Need another way to monitor the freshness of your food? Use the app to track expiration dates and keep your grocery list up to date. And did we mention the Hub Refrigerator spies on the contents of your fridge? Three cameras inside capture an image every time the door closes. These images are accessible from your smartphone, allowing you to see how many yogurt tubes and pizza rolls have been consumed—or rather, what you need to restock. This smart kitchen appliance from Samsung has a few other cool features available when connected to other Samsung devices. Connect to Bluetooth wireless speakers, or use screen mirroring with your Samsung smart TV. Regardless of what features have you hooked, the Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator meets all those after-school kitchen needs, and the time spent in the kitchen in between.

No one knew the impact Amazon would have on the world of e-commerce when it “opened up shop” in 1994. Now, 22 years later, Amazon sells more than 200 million products. But there’s a new kid on the block: monthly subscription box services. There’s a box for almost everything, from art supplies to Japanese candy. Celebrities are even getting in on the trend. Kate Hudson, Tyler Florence and Giuliana Rancic are just a few A-listers who have launched their own subscription box services. Many of the services work the same way: sign up for a subscription that renews at various times, and receive your products in the mail. Some allow you to keep all the items; others allow you to purchase online what you want to keep. These boxes have allowed consumers to narrow down their options (with tangible items in hand) but rely on someone else to do the legwork. To give you an idea of just what kind of options are out there, we’ve peeked inside five different subscription boxes. Let’s take a look.

Health and beauty product shopping has become somewhat of a spectator sport. The market is saturated with moisturizers, bronzers and eyeliners. With so many items to choose from, no wonder it can be overwhelming. And what if your newly chosen leave-in hair treatment ends up treating your tresses badly? You are then left with a nearly full bottle of hair product you’ll never use. BIRCHBOX is a monthly delivery service that allows subscribers to try sample-sized products before making the decision to purchase the full-sized version, making product-shopping overload a thing of the past. For $10 per month, subscribers receive five personalized beauty samples each month, which are chosen based on their individual beauty profile. (There is also a pre-paid yearly subscription available for $110.) Birchbox ships free every month, so you only pay for the subscription fee and whatever full-sized versions you purchase on the website, which offers more than 6,500 products. You can also shop online without a subscription to the monthly service. Since its inception in 2010, the company has amassed more than 800,000 active subscribers and reports more than $96 million in sales. Not a bad amount of coin for delivering cosmetics and beauty products to customers’ doorsteps. UNIQUE FEATURE: Birchbox Points can be earned every time you shop, invite your friends to subscribe, or share info about your box on social media. Also, subscribers can earn 50 points, or $5, by reviewing all five of their samples on the website.

Everyone could use a healthy dose of spirituality each month, and the people behind FAITHBOX want to make that happen. The monthly delivery service is made for individuals wanting to strengthen their Christian faith through devotion. The scriptures and inspirational quotes in the daily devotional book, Everyday Faith, are based on a faith-related theme each month. Also included in the monthly box are products from companies that “do good.” These products range from coffee and tea to temporary tattoos and essential oils. Each product is eco-friendly and ethically made for an overall positive vibe. You can purchase a box for $20 (plus $5 shipping) each month, or subscribe to a three-month or yearlong plan for a discounted price per box. UNIQUE FEATURE: Every box purchased provides three meals to hungry kids via Faithbox’s Rice Bowls partnership. In 2015, the company donated more than 100,000 meals to hungry kids via Rice Bowls.

Cats like to keep it fresh. You’ve probably noticed that after a few swats at a cloth mouse, your feline is “over it.” If it’s time to get a new routine for Felix, whether that’s with a new toy or yummy treat, meowbox has you covered. A subscription box solely devoted to cats, MEOWBOX sends five to seven carefully researched toys and other items—including treats—to your feline’s front door. Picky kitty? The food and treats are either made with natural ingredients, grain-free, organic or locally made. Even pickier kitty? You can request a toy or goodie-filled box sans food items. Sign up for a subscription plan that works best for you: monthly ($32.95 per box), every three months ($27.95 per box) or every six months ($22.95 per box). Shipping is free. Have a dog in your family? BarkBox is the same concept, but for canines. UNIQUE FEATURE: This company actively supports animal shelters and rescue groups. With every box purchased, meowbox donates a can of cat food to a shelter cat on the subscriber’s behalf.

Are you the mother of all Pinterest fails? All parents want to stimulate their child’s intelligence through art, science and math using one great project to encompass them all. But after time spent finding said project, who has time to buy all the materials, and then— heaven forbid—what if you forget the glue or tape? KIWI CRATE aims to make learning fun for kids and at the same time, eliminate the hassle for parents. For a monthly subscription rate of $19.95 per crate (shipping is free), Kiwi Crate will ship a crate to your front door that includes materials and inspiration for projects related to a theme such as music, dinosaurs or colors. Each project is tested by kids to ensure that the various activities are developmentally appropriate, and liked by both boys and girls. Projects may include arts and crafts, science activities and imaginative play, depending on which crate category subscribers choose. There are also three-month, six-month and yearlong subscriptions available (with these options crate costs are discounted and shipping is still free). UNIQUE FEATURE: There are different crates for different ages: Koala Crates for ages three to four use inquiry-based learning; Kiwi Crates for ages five to eight use creative science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) projects; Doodle Crate for ages nine to 16+ are designed to build creative confidence through art and design; and, Tinker Crate, also for ages nine to 16+, uses projects to encourage tinkering through science and engineering.

Like the idea of a personal stylist, but still dread heading to the department store or boutique every time you need a new outfit or accessory? STITCH FIX is a monthly subscription service devoted to bringing fashion to the masses who want to take the worry out of their wardrobe. The company learns what you like— and what you can live without—and sends you clothes and accessories accordingly. After signing up, you fill out a Style Profile letting stylists know what you are looking for. They will handpick a selection of five clothing items and accessories that fit your taste, budget and lifestyle. There is a stylist fee each month of $20, but this fee is credited to your account and can be used to purchase the items you wish to keep. You check out online to pay for those items, and for those that didn’t work, you mail back to Stitch Fix in a pre-paid mailing bag. You have three days to complete the process. Currently, Stitch Fix is for women wearing sizes 0/XS to 14/XL. And the company offers maternity

and petite clothing, as well. Stitch Fix works with more than 250 of the best up-and-coming labels and brands such as Citizens for Humanity and Kut From The Kloth. It also sends in-house brands. The items you receive are on average $55 a piece. UNIQUE FEATURE: Choose to receive shipments every two to three weeks, every month, every other month, or every three months. However, you can skip an automatic upcoming shipment. After selecting this option on your online account, your subscription will resume as usual for the following shipment. There’s no doubt about it: Subscription boxes have simplified the way we shop and sample new things. Gone are the days of trekking from store to store and schlepping your purchases back home. We no longer have to visit multiple shops or even discover things on our own. Subscription services deliver the items you need (and the items you don’t even know you need) directly to your doorstep. And as the trend continues to expand into diff-erent categories,we’ll have that much more variety, all wrapped up in a cute, compact box.

Spine Team Texas Neck & Back Pain Specialists

When you have back or neck pain for more than one-two weeks seek the advice of a spine specialist and one that is part of a comprehensive team.

The physicians on staff at Spine Team Texas know that neck and back pain should not be something an individual has to live with. As a spine-specialized center, Spine Team Texas encourages patients with pain lasting more than two weeks to visit a healthcare professional at their facility. Spine Team Texas has remained dedicated to their treatment philosophy for more than 11 years. Their philosophy is that spine care should be conservative whenever possible, reserving surgery for patients that fail to get extended spine pain relief or when medically necessary. The team of spine specialists offers a myriad of innovative, non-surgical spine care treatments. A critical part of their team is on-site, spine-focused physical therapy. When surgery is indicated or medically necessary, they offer minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS) techniques. They feel when surgery is indicated that minimally invasive spine surgery techniques should be instituted whenever possible. Spine Team Texas has many philanthropies and organizations they support in the community. Spine Team Texas provides summer internships to aspiring medical profession students through the Southlake (CISD) Carroll Medical Academy. Other organizations it supports include: the American Heart Association, the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation of North Texas, and the Neuroassistance Foundation, to mention only a few. mack in the middle of Deep Ellum is some of the best Southern food this side of the Mississippi. Texas may stake its claim in barbecue and TexMex, but Filament is doing its own thing with what it calls “regional Southern cooking.” We’re talking grits and meat pies with a slab of red velvet cake to finish it off. But don’t expect these classic Southern staples to be served up the same old way. The restaurant, which opened last December, does things a little differently. “I don’t really do Southern food as always fried chicken and biscuits,” says Owner and Chef Matt McCallister. “It’s more than that.” After his many travels throughout the Southern states, McCallister knew he wanted to put a fresh spin on some of his favorite dishes from places like New Orleans, Charleston and Miami. So he opened Filament, a follow-up to FT33, his

rustic-chic Dallas hotspot. Filament is every bit as good, but with dishes that are undeniably less fussy. Here, the food isn’t delicately plated with tweezers. Instead, it’s meant to be shared, whether you pass around a taste of the Dry-Aged Beef Tartare or a scoop of the Cauliflower Gratin. Open for brunch, lunch and dinner, the menu is peppered with plates that range from adventurous (who’s up for some Wood-Grilled Octopus?) to downright delicious. The Fried “Hot” Catfish and Heritage Berkshire Short Ribs caught our eye. Chef McCallister has a different favorite. “The onion dip is my jam,” he says. “We wanted to do our own take on a French onion dip. We take onions and throw them on live coals. The result is an ember-roasted dip that has a nice burnt aspect to it. It has incredible depth of flavor.”

The food at Filament stays true to its Southern roots. Those Buttermilk Smashed Potatoes on the menu? You can bet those taters aren’t from Idaho. “We try not to get anything ingredient-wise that doesn’t come from the South or our region,” says Chef McCallister. “We’re very ingredient-driven, so we keep things as local as possible.” Even the cocktails tend to sway more on the Southern side. The Old Fashioned, for example, comes with a house-made, sorghum-chicory syrup. One of Filament’s most creative cocktails is a shared Sazerac, which is bottled in advance and served to a table of two or three people. And the restaurant’s Boilermaker, which is typically a beer and a shot of whiskey, is a Lone Star with a shot of Mellow Corn whiskey. Now that’s a Texas twist. The desserts follow suit, with options including Buttermilk Pie and Coconut Cake. The TX Pecan Pie is served with a heaping scoop of bourbon vanilla ice cream. Plain vanilla would be too, well, plain. The sweets don’t come cheap at $7 to $9 a pop, but if you’re indulging in a Southern dish, you might as well go all the way. Filament exudes charm, but not in a cheesy, red-checked-tablecloth way. The sprawling interior is warm and inviting with an open floor plan. The focal point is the bar, which isn’t just lined with liquors, but with jars of vegetables being pickled. It may be out of the norm for the neighborhood, but it works at Filament. For those in the know (which now happens to be you), Filament offers secret specials—menu items that are in seriously limited quantities and available to those who know to ask. These dishes are always changing, so just ask your server when you arrive. Even if you don’t end up ordering the secret dish, it’s still fun to be an insider. The restaurant is come as you are, no reservations needed. It’s open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, so if you’re in the area for a concert or show, mosey on over for a drink. And although it’s a fair trek from Southlake, Chef McCallister promises a good experience. “It’s totally worth the drive,” he says. “Deep Ellum is coming back around to another resurgence. It’s a fun, lively place on the weekends.” If Filament is a celebration of good, Southern cooking, we want to be at that party. Maybe we’ll see y’all there.

A Taste of the Exotic Embark on a flavor adventure at Malai Kitchen. You don’t need a passport to enjoy authentic Thai and Vietnamese cuisine. You don’t even need to go to Dallas— anymore. Braden and Yasmin Wages opened the Southlake location of their Vietnamese/Thai-inspired restaurant, Malai Kitchen, earlier this year, modeling it after their successful Uptown Dallas location. If a packed house is any indication, the Park Village eatery is living up to the buzz, serving tantalizing tastes from around the globe. Everything at Malai Kitchen is the real deal. Even the srirachi and coconut milk are made from scratch in-house. That’s the only way the Wages will have it. Since they opened the original Malai Kitchen in 2011, they’ve been committed to capturing the intense, fresh and bright flavors of each region’s cuisine. We visited at lunch and were whisked away to a comfortable booth. The space is chic and upscale, with a relaxed, sophisticated vibe. The décor incorporates the Southeast Asian angle with plenty of warm, tropical woods

and bamboo. Our meal began with a complimentary starter of sticky rice, which was wrapped in a banana leaf with a savory dipping sauce. It was gooey and sweet, and a good sign of the food to come. Next up to arrive at our table was the Malai Favorites Sampler. It’s served with two of each: Grilled Chicken Satay, Imperial Rolls, Spring Rolls and Vietnamese Meatballs. The fried Imperial Rolls had a satisfying crunch, and filled the palate with a rush of flavors. These won us over, but we were hungry for the main course. The menu is divided into specialties such as the Jungle Curry Hot Pot and Chilean Sea Bass, as well as classics like Lemongrass Chicken and Drunken Noodles. There are even menu items that are exclusive to the Park Village location. Dallasites aren’t feasting on the Panang Curry Duck; that’s something you can only get at the Southlake restaurant. We happened to enjoy the Khao Phat (Vegetable Jasmine Fried Rice). It was hard to spot the rice beneath a generous serving of wok-seared vegetables and giant, juicy shrimp. We loved every bite. The Pulled Pork Banh Mi was another favorite at our table. A Vietnamese baguette is loaded with pork, pickled carrots, daikon and cucumbers. This is fusion food at its best. Nothing fancy; just good. Malai Kitchen’s drink menu doesn’t disappoint. You can sip beverages such as Vietnamese iced coffee, sake and Singapore Slings. The restaurant also has its own beer program, with five house-brewed, Asian-style beers on tap. There’s no doubt about it: A visit to Malai Kitchen will transport your taste buds and satisfy your craving for something new and original. Bring your appetite and your sense of adventure, and enjoy the ride.

Fast-casual restaurants are having a major moment. You order at the counter, grab a seat and await your food. They simplify the ordering process by eliminating a waiter. While Black Walnut Café fits this concept, it shatters the mold. The Colleyville restaurant is anything but typical, from the sophisticated ambience to the sheer size of the menu (it boasts more than 100 items). Everything is taken up a notch to make the eatery, as proclaimed on its website, “a true home away from home.” Black Walnut Café indeed has a comfort-driven atmosphere with luxurious high-back chairs and darkwood paneling. When we stepped into the foyer, we noticed a lounge area, almost like a parlor in a grand Southern estate, to one side and a traditional dining room on the other side. It made us pause. Is this place fancy? Is it relaxed? Well, it’s a little of both. It’s a casual dining experience with an upscale vibe. The ordering process is similar to Café Express. You’re given a pager that goes off when your meal is ready, and you fill your own drink and grab your own silverware. Then you’re free to settle wherever looks comfortable. You’re not limited to a booth or table; you can mix it up by enjoying your meal in a living room-style arrangement. Think cushy chairs and a side table. And if you want to keep your eye on the game or the news ticker, there are several high-definition TVs gracing the walls. As for the cuisine, it’s classified as contemporary American, and dishes span the culinary spectrum from healthy to decadent. You can order everything from build-your-own omelets and gourmet salads to rustic grilled cheese and chicken fried steak. We particularly enjoyed the chicken taquitos, which were perfectly crispy and stuffed with juicy, nicely marinated chicken. Although they’re listed under the “Munchies” part of the menu, they’re filling enough to be the main course. Be sure to leave room for dessert, though. Confections such as cakes, pastries and gelato are on display behind a glass counter for all to see. The café also offers weekday happy hours: one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Stop by from 7 to 10:30 a.m. to enjoy sips such as a Frozen Peach Bellini or White Wine Sangria. We only wish they were offered on weekends. When you face the inevitable conundrum of not knowing what you’d like to eat, let Black Walnut Café solve your dilemma. It’s a place that truly offers something for everyone. And it’s all served up in a setting so comfortable you won’t mind taking your time.

See Stretching almost a quarter of a mile along the Destin Harbor, the City of Destin’s Harbor Boardwalk is overflowing with shops, restaurants, activities and attractions. Walking along the boardwalk, you’ll be privy to amazing views of the Destin Harbor and the East Pass. Enjoy fresh seafood, live entertainment and genuine pirate ships—you can even become an official pirate for the day. Visitors also have access to local fishing charter boats and a wide variety of water activities. CityofDestin.com Just five miles east of Destin, the Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park is open rain or shine. A few showers won’t ruin the day— there’s still plenty of fun to be had with numerous animal encounter opportunities, daily dolphin and sea lion shows, and a wide variety of exhibits. In addition to these activities, the Gulfarium offers scheduled chats by the reptile, shark and otter exhibits. You’ll have to reserve animal encounters, but nothing beats snorkeling with stingrays or splashing with dolphins. Gulfarium.com

Eat If you’d like to have more variety on your seafood menu—not just your catch— Boshamps Seafood & Oyster House in Destin Harbor is the place to experience it. With Chef Andi Bell’s knowledge of the Gulf of Mexico Basin and Caribbean cuisine, combined with his deep Southern roots, Boshamps is proud to offer local “Gulf to Table Southern Cuisine.” The restaurant uses local suppliers to create dishes for its lunch, dinner and kid’s menu. Menu favorites include oysters (they’re prepared seven different ways), the Cornmeal Dusted Gulf Grouper made with balsamic grilled local vegetables, or on the lighter side, the Gulf Coast Blue Crab Salad. Catering to locals and tourists alike, Boshamps wants to give families a place to “kick back and relax.” Docking facilities at the restaurant, which is located on the gulf along Harbor Boulevard, allow for easy access. Offering courses in swimming, diving and snorkeling, Emerald Coast Scuba wants to train you for water activity success. Once certain disciplines are mastered, instructors are ready to take you to sea and put into practice what you’ve learned at the family-owned and -operated facility. Since you’ll most likely be spending your Destin vacation in or near the water, it’s a good idea that the whole family has some swimming experience. So if that’s something you forgot to “pack,” courses for all ages take place in the heated saltwater pool, the Sea Mint Pond, at Emerald Coast Scuba. If you’re long past the stage of getting your feet wet, dive right in to their SCUBA training courses. From age eight to 100, there are courses available for beginners and those who need refreshing. Train in the Sea Mint Pond or in open water. Is someone in your travel party still too young to SCUBA? Snorkeling class instructors pave the way for kids ages five to seven. DiveDestin.com We can’t talk about a Destin vacation and not mention its nickname, “The World’s Luckiest Fishing Village.” Action Fishing Charter Service and Silver King Charters of Destin offer deep-sea fishing, sport fishing, bay fishing and sunset cruises. Enjoy near-shore Gulf fishing in state waters at a 50- to 100-foot water depth using tackle to fish for red, white and black snapper, king mackerel, triggerfish and shark. Off-shore gulf fishing in federal waters starts nine miles off shore and reaches depths of 100 to 300 feet. Out there, you can fish for amberjacks, mahi-mahi and Marlin. Release what you don’t plan to eat (that’s the Destin way), and allow the chefs at Brotula’s Seafood House & Steamer or Big Red Truck (both located onsite) to cook and prepare your finest catch of the day. outhlake Town Square. Springtime in Southlake. It’s a beauty on its own, but pair it with artistic creations and it’s simply breathtaking. Lucky for us, this stunning backdrop has become an annual tradition since it was first brought to life as a community fundraiser by the Southlake Women’s Club in 2000. Today, the fine arts festival has grown not only locally, but nationally, recognized as one of the top fine arts festivals in the country. And it’s easy to see why. The two-and-a-half-day event continues to build momentum even 16 years after its inception, as its volunteer creators work hard to promote cultural experiences in our community and raise money to support local charities. Here you’ll find emerging and professional artists mingling with young artists just learning to hone their craft. It’s a true celebration of what it means to be an artist. Art in the Square is the perfect opportunity to introduce your children (or yourself) to a new way to think about the world. Discover artwork from 150 artists exhibiting 2D, 3D, sculpture, photography and more. Sample cuisine and beverages of all kinds, with delectable options including a bellini and margarita tent, and plenty of food trucks. Get your fill, then find a seat or a patch of grass and enjoy entertainment on two stages, with a variety of musical genres represented from jazz and blues to pop and rock, and even reggae. Who knows, you might even leave with a new favorite art form that you never truly appreciated … until you realized you couldn’t live without it.

nnis. Tell people you live in Texas, and a few things come to mind. Cowboy boots? Sometimes. Horses? For the lucky ones. And bluebonnets. Oh, yes. It seems Mother Nature has her own way of saying “hello spring” in Texas, and it’s through the incredible bluebonnets that blanket its prairies, trails and grass-covered fields. However, there are certain areas where you’ll get more than a glimpse of these blue-hued beauties. Just an hour drive south will get you to the “Official Bluebonnet City of Texas” and its “Official Bluebonnet Trail,” where you’ll find more than 40 miles of mapped driving bluebonnet trails—the oldest of its kind known in the state. Sponsored by the Ennis Garden Club, the wildflower show is a sight to see, celebrating its 65th picturesque year. So where will you find the most blooms? The entire month of April is a sure bet that you’ll see a good number of them, but peak time is usually week three (check VisitEnnis.org for updates, as it can vary depending on weather conditions.) Come April 15-17 to enjoy a full celebration, complete with a Friday-night dance, arts and craft exhibits, food and drinks, bluebonnet souvenirs, wildflower walks, live music and more. Whether you come for the festival or simply to revel in nature, you’ll definitely want to experience the bluebonnet trails. Take a leisurely drive through the winding country roads at no charge after picking up a trail map at the Ennis Convention and Visitors Bureau, or choose to take a guided bus tour with advanced reservations so you can simply enjoy your surroundings. And if you decide to lose the map and see where the road takes you, we won’t blame you a bit.

With a career spanning three decades, Adams has left an impression on numerous generations through his classic hits. On any given day, you’ll be as likely to find a college student belting out “Summer of ’69” at a local bar as a retiree humming along to “I’d Do It For You” in their car. Find both celebrating this timeless artist as he hits the stage in Grand Prairie.

CELEBRATE UPTOWN APRIL 10 The Rustic. Just because we don’t reside in Uptown Dallas doesn’t mean we can’t feel like it for one night. Join the city folks at Pat Green’s passion project, The Rustic, where you’ll find a lively crowd and plenty of Red Dirt tunes from Texas’ own Cory Morrow. Local country music, craft beer and an atmosphere built by one of the state’s most beloved homegrown stars? Now that’s a celebration.

FINE ART, FUN FINDS MEET THE HUSBAND-AND-WIFE TEAM BEHIND BLUE POMEGRANATE GALLERY.

There’s art in the Square … and not just the festival that’s getting all the buzz this month. Blue Pomegranate Gallery, the eclectic shop nestled in Southlake Town Square, is bursting with all kinds of colorful, unique pieces. We caught up with owner Sondra Gerber to chat about Blue Pom (as fans affectionately call it), and what kind of artistic surprises are in store. Q: Tell us a little about how Blue Pom got its start. A: A friend and I decided to sign up for an art fair and share a booth to sell our work under the name of Blue Pomegranate Studio. Once we found ourselves making and selling our work full time, we decided to share studio space. In 2001, Jason [Gerber’s husband] and I decided to invest in a building that could house both working and selling space, hence the birth of Blue Pomegranate Gallery. In 2010, Jason quit his full-time job and became the business manager for the gallery. I began creating relationships with artists from all over the country and started carrying their work in the gallery. Q: You’re based in Omaha, Nebraska.
What brought you to Southlake? A: We had been thinking about expanding to multiple locations. Southlake is a vibrant, growing community, and we felt it was an optimal location for a gallery offering only American handmade fine art and fine crafts. Q: Has anything surprised you about the Southlake community? A: The support of the community is amazing. The mayor even came in and posted about our gallery on her Facebook page. Q: Sondra, you’re the owner and also an artist. Where do you draw inspiration for your art? A: Nature. I also love the clean, contemporary lines of the mid-century modern styles. Q: How would you describe your style as an artist? A: Contemporary with a touch of whimsy. I am an upbeat, positive person, and I think that is reflected in my work. I recently began using more color in my work and I am excited to see where that new path will take me.

Q: Jason, you’re a professional photographer. How do you and Sondra work together at Blue Pom? A: I’ve had a camera in my hand since I can remember, instructed by my father to look for the interesting detail. Sondra and I have found we are a great team for the gallery. She’s a great designer, curator and the boss everyone wants to work harder for. I have a background in small business; it’s in the blood. We love working on projects together and even share an office with each other, sitting just a few feet apart. We are inseparable in life, love and business. Q: Give us an idea of what shoppers will find at the gallery. A: We like to think of Blue Pomegranate as a great treasure hunt. As you explore the gallery, you see more and more every time you walk through. People often say it takes about three trips around the gallery to get an idea of the full range of what we carry. We love art that makes you smile, and even some that makes you laugh out loud. Q: What if a shopper is looking for a custom piece? Can that be arranged? A: Many of our artists are happy to do custom work. Just ask and we’ll see what we can do! Q: How do you select artists to feature? A: We look for art that is unique, well executed on a professional level, and fits in with our colorful, uplifting style. Q: What’s something people might not know about the gallery? A: The name, Blue Pomegranate, comes from the Bible in Exodus 28:33, where God instructs the priests to adorn their robes with the blue pomegranates, a color that is not true to nature. The Blue Pom is something that is unexpected, creative and a symbol of fruitfulness.
