When I was Finnegan McDevitt’s age, I would beg my parents to stop at the country store in Greenville, New York. Why? They had rows upon rows of glass jars jam-packed with penny candies — that’s why. Two quarters were all I needed to begin a mouth-watering tour de sweet. Ok… two quarters AND at least a half-hour, because the only thing better than eating candy was plucking my favorites, one-by-one, from those glass vessels. I would make every cent count and walk away with enough rock candy, licorice pipes and root beer barrels to elicit warnings of an impending stomach ache. When faced with so many wonderful options, it’s plain for even a six year old to see — there is an art to the selection of just about anything. And that brings us back to Finnegan. The handsome first grader on this month’s cover was selected by Carroll ISD from more than 90 applicants to be a member of the district’s Bond Builders program. The recognition — and his personal style — made him one of our top choices for our fifth annual Tastemakers feature which starts on page 44. Speaking of selection, did you know that just one in five artists who apply are accepted by the professional jury to show their work at this month’s Art in the Square? The show’s professional jury selected 155 artists from nearly 800 applications. I’m sure it was a daunting task — but my six-year-old self may disagree.

The 1987 classic “Overboard” is getting a new twist in the upcoming remake. This time, the trauma-induced amnesia strikes a male character, Leonardo (Eugenio Derbez). A selfish, rich playboy, Leonardo’s life changes after falling off his yacht and waking up in the hospital. Kate (Anna Farris), an employee whom he had treated badly in the past, picks him up under the guise of his wife. She is a single mother of three daughters, so she figures she could use the extra help while also helping karma. The amusing premise is quite similar to the original film, but viewers will now get a fun plot twist with an amnesia-stricken man versus the original ’80s victim: Joanna Stayton (Goldie Hawn).

ith an increased concern about drought and the human impact on our ecosystem, xeriscaping – often called zeroscaping – has blossomed over the past few years. Deriving meaning from the Latin root for dry, this landscape undertaking is all about ditching lush lawns for a more minimalistic approach. While greenery has its place in the world, xeriscape experts believe this trend is on the rise because it’s easier on the environment and requires minimal maintenance. You too can bring this approach to your home by learning more about the pillars of xeriscaping. Say goodbye to days spent mowing the lawn and replanting seasonal buds and hello to a year-round property investment.

Water preservation stands at the core of this movement. While lawn maintenance might not be your first cut when looking at ways to reduce your water usage, the gallons that are circulated around your home have a direct daily effect on the community’s environment. According to the EPA, outdoor water use accounts for more than 30 percent of a household’s total consumption. And that number can climb to as much as 60 percent in more arid areas like Tarrant County. Instead of pumping out water to sustain labored landscaping, a xeriscaping plan can reduce a family’s water use by 50 to 75 percent. APR 18 • 19

“Xeriscaping means your plants and lawn need less water. By using less water, your water bill will go down and you will relieve the stress put on our water system,” Southlake’s environmental coordinator Ashley Carlisle says. “If Southlake residents use less water, that means we don't have to purchase as much water from the City of Fort Worth. So water conservation really is a win-win situation.” 20 • APR 18

Because native plants can adjust to less frequent watering and the hotter temperatures that hit Southlake, you should purposefully place items that need more water near an appropriate irrigation system, like a drip-irrigation system, to avoid overwatering the entire space. “You don’t get that evaporation that comes with traditional sprinklers with a drip-irrigation system,” Calloway’s Garden Center & Nursery Southlake manager Kimberly Evans says. “It’s also just easier because it waters the ground slowly. It’s not necessary, but it definitely helps.”

REDUCTION OF TURF AREAS A quick drive around town will show just how many green lawns stand back to back in Southlake neighborhoods. But that unnecessary open space is creating more work than it may be worth. Instead of rolling out turf to cover every inch of your front and backyard, use minimal grass space around your home. It can still be used for both functional and visual appeal, but it doesn’t need to be the foundation for the rest of your landscaping. Use turf to line your walkways or for a purposeful play location for your family, and leave the rest of the space open for more creative opportunities. A nice gravel or stone section will add a new texture into the space and make your other colors pop in comparison. And while you are being more tactful about your SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

lawn approach, find the right seed mix to create a drought-tolerate environment. There are plenty of eco-friendly alternatives to choose from that will still provide that sharp green hue without needing to be watered daily. “When you start designing, take a step back from your house and see what draws your eye first,” Evans says. “See how much space you are dealing with and start with the backdrop first.”

I N C O R P O R AT I O N O F D R O U G H T - R E S I S TA N T PLANTS Finding the appropriate plants for your home may sound daunting or limiting, but they will save you time and money in the long run. Whether you want to plant flowerbeds by your house or provide shade to your front windows, there are plenty of native trees, shrubs, plants and flowers you can include into your xeriscaping design. And while you are exploring your options, be purposeful about your plot planning. By considering the natural contours and drainage patterns of the space, you can create the most indigenous pattern for walkways, turf designs and shrubbery. This will also help you place plants that have high-watering needs near similar items and plants that need less frequent watering closer together to ensure everything gets the right level of moisture. You can find the right plants for you by using resources like Texas Agricultural Extension Service from The Texas A&M University System’s Xeriscape: Landscape Water Conservation report when shopping for new landscaping items. “Texas is blessed with an abundance of beautiful native plants from which to choose,” according to the report. “Most require less water and fertilizer and have fewer pest problems than non-adapted exotic plants that have been introduced into Texas landscapes.” These industry professionals have found native items like autumn sage, Central Texas sage and white rain lily perform well in the North Central Texas region. “It’s pretty easy to go indigenous in SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

Texas. You just need to find the right plants that can withstand the heat,” Evans says. “And you can still find pieces that put out some really great showy flowers and have a range of color.”

SIMPLISTIC MAINTENANCE While xeriscaping promises low maintenance, the upkeep that ensures the quality of this landscaping design is critical. To keep your plants healthy, make sure there is a proper hydration and draining system that your lawn can feed on. You also may want to test your soil for its pH levels to ensure it has the minerals necessary to support your landscaping designs. When you do add in a new plant, cover the open soil with a few inches of mulch, like compost, leaves or gravel. This will help keep the soil moist and bring that smaller amount of water directly to the right plant. Mulch will need to be replaced as the plant continues to grow and more water is circulated throughout your lawn. Also removing weeds that may be lurking in this mulch will help ensure the water is going to the right source. Plus, it will help keep your exterior lines clean and make your lawn look more sophisticated. “A lot of people think that low maintenance means no maintenance, which is not the case,” Evans says. “The goal is to use plants that need less work, so you only have to water them once or twice a week. They are still growing things. They need some water.” APR 18 • 21

INCUMBENTS REMAIN AND GENERAL ELECTION FOR MAYOR HAS BEEN CANCELLED Mayor Laura Hill and Council Place 2 Shawn McCaskill will continue to serve the city in their current positions for another term. Both candidates were unopposed in their individual races. Mayor Hill and City Councilman McCaskill were declared elected at the March 6 city council meeting. Even though this city election scheduled for May has been cancelled, both political figures urged citizens to come out for the primary election with the #SouthlakeVotes campaign.

LOCAL CHILD TO WALK WITH THE STARS AT CHILDREN’S CANCER FUND GALA AND FASHION SHOW Caroline Duncan, 5, will act as a featured model in the Children’s Cancer Fund Gala and Fashion Show on April 27 at 6 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Dallas. The Southlake preschooler was diagnosed with pre-B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia on her third birthday in January 2016. Caroline will walk with 21 other pediatric cancer patients, ages 5 – 15, who will be escorted by local celebrities, dignitaries, philanthropists and media personalities. And Tony Romo will act as the event’s guest DJ. The event is hoping to raise $1 million to support pediatric cancer research and treatment programs at Children’s Health and UT Southwestern.

THE ALUMNI DRAGON CLASSIC GOLF TOURNAMENT BENEFITTING CARROLL ISD RETURNS The Dragon Classic, founded in 2013, is an annual alumni golf tournament benefiting Carroll ISD organizations. In efforts to help close the Robin Hood gap, proceeds of the tournament are donated directly back to the students through the Carroll Education Foundation, The Tradition Scholarship Fund and CISD booster clubs. Since its inaugural year, The Dragon Classic has become the premier alumni event. The Dragon Classic is supported through sponsorships, volunteers, donors and players alike. Regardless of high school graduating class, The Dragon Classic Committee invites you to golf for a cause on May 11 at Sky Creek Ranch in Keller to help fundraise for Carroll schools.

YOUNGLIVES WILL STRUT THEIR STUFF AT UPCOMING FASHION SHOW AND FUNDRAISER For a fabulous afternoon of fashion and fun, check out YoungLives’ second annual Tea Rose Fashion Show and Fundraiser on April 15 at 2 p.m. Guests will see models strut their stuff while wearing pieces from your favorite local shops, like Kendra Scott and Social Rose Boutique. Both vendors will also host pop-up shops for guests during the event. The day’s proceeds will help YoungLives continue to serve local teen moms and their children with the hopes of impacting the next generation. DALLAS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA RETURNS TO SOUTHLAKE WITH DSO ON THE GO On April 5, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra came out to the White’s Chapel United Methodist Church for the DSO on the Go concert series. Before the classical works took over the space, DSO Director of Education Jamie Allen held a pre-concert lecture. Then, the group performed selections like Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite and Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture.

CARROLL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ORGANIZE SCHOOL-WIDE SERVICE PROJECT On April 7, Carroll High and Senior High came together for one day of service throughout the community with The Dragon Event. The student-led project, held for the first time this year, had a goal of giving back by partnering with different organizations and assisting in meaningful tasks that would make a difference around town, like gardening and meal packing. Every student and faculty member was invited out to get involved. The event was modeled after The Big Event, which is hosted by Texas A&M University every year.

SOUTHLAKE DEPARTMENTS TEAM UP WITH THE JOY PROJECT Throughout the month of March, the Southlake police and fire departments partnered up with The Joy Project to collect bunnies and bears to benefit patients and families in local children’s hospitals. The Joy Project is also helping collect monetary contributions to purchase toiletries for Cook Children’s Medical Center’s family members who stay for an extended period of time at the hospital or arrive unexpectedly due to an emergency. Haley Whatley started The Joy Project back in 2000 by collecting stuffed animals for the children at Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth. The group has collected more than 50,000 bunnies and bears over the last 17 years. LET’S CHALK ABOUT IT Everyone loves Southlake Town Square, and on March 13, some of its biggest fans made it a bit more colorful. Approximately 150 locals came out for Chalk Art in the Square, a day full of music, goodies and lots of fun. People of all ages were able to leave their mark by creating unique chalk designs on the area’s sidewalks. The event was rounded out with a group dance to ChaCha Slide and a game of Limbo.

SOUTHLAKE GIRLS LACROSSE ASSOCIATION CONTINUES TO GROW Despite only getting its start last fall, the Southlake Girls Lacrosse Association has over 110 girls registered over six different teams: Varsity, JV, 7/8, 5/6, 3/4 and K-2 teams. Earlier this year the 7/8, JV and Varsity teams travelled to College Station, where the JV team brought home the first-place trophy. Both the 5/6s and the 7/8s recently won their first competitions against McKinney. Youth teams played in the Hockaday Play Day in March, and played other area teams like Flower Mound, Allen and Coppell. Southlake Girls Lacrosse Association (SGLA) offers the sport of lacrosse to all girls in Southlake at every age group beginning in kindergarten and continuing throughout high school. The group emphasizes fun as a critical component of success on the lacrosse field and provides the necessary resources and a safe atmosphere essential for growth and learning. RUN4ELISE EVENT RETURNS FOR A SECOND YEAR On April 7, the 2018 Elise Cerami Memorial Scholarship Winners were announced in conjunction with a 5K/1 Mile fun run event honoring the life of its namesake. Elise Cerami was Southlake Carroll student who tragically passed away during a club swim practice in 2016. Since then, the Swim4Elise Foundation has been working to promote water safety and work to reduce fatal drownings. The foundation fulfills this mission by providing outreach programs and awarding scholarships to swimmers committed to both excellence and safety in their sport. Run4Elise raises proceeds for the foundation and scholarship fund. In addition, critical water safety resources were provided to Run4Elise participants, along with finisher medals to commemorate their achievements. Both the 5K and 1-mile fun run/walk offered a downhill finish and were family-friendly. Strollers were welcome. AU PAIRS AND THEIR HOST FAMILIES TO CRAFT FOR A CAUSE Local host families and au pairs are invited to Lonesome Dove Park on April 15 to make board books. These homemade book will be donated to the Kids First Foundation. The event kicks off at 11:30 a.m. and allows au pairs and families to mingle. Families are asked to bring a side or dessert, while au pairs are asked to bring a traditional dish from their home country. Cultural Care, an au pair agency, sponsors Kids First Foundation. CARROLL ISD ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT AND INSIDE CARROLL RECEIVE RECOGNITION AT STATE CONVENTION At the 2018 Texas School Public Relations Association (TSPRA) conference, Carroll ISD Assistant Superintendent for Board and Community Relations Julie Thannum was named the TSPRA Most Valuable Member. It’s that time again when we recognize locals who are doing good and looking good doing it. These five Southlake residents have made a huge impact on the community with their time and efforts, and we think they have more than earned a bit of recognition. This year’s Tastemakers got a little help from ZAR Clothier to show off their unique styles. APR 18 • 45

EmmaKate FEW Style has shaped EmmaKate Few’s life. She started modeling early and met an older model who was involved in the pageant process. After cheering her on at a competition, EmmaKate wanted to try it out for herself. In junior high, she competed in her first pageant and soon after walked away with the “Miss Georgia High School” title. That led her to the Miss High School America competition, where she received first runner up. She took a break from pageantry to focus on her modeling, academics and journalism. But after starting school at SMU, she decided to sign up for the Miss Southlake competition. With that win, EmmaKate is now heading to Miss Texas in June. With her platform, she has been able to give back to those in need. She is a national spokesperson for Soles4Souls, a non-profit that distributes shoes and clothing around the world. She’s also collected more than 15,000 pairs of shoes over the past six years. “I think it’s very easy for all of us, myself included, to take for granted many of the things that we have that others elsewhere don’t: electricity, running water, access to education and shoes,” EmmaKate says. “There is little I can do about the others, but I can help collect shoes.” And while this falls right in line with EmmaKate’s line of interest, it also helps solve serious problems. “Shoelessness encourages disease, discourages employability and hampers the ability of a child in the third world to attend school,” EmmaKate explains. You can find EmmaKate at Southlake’s community events, on the big screen in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy or on the jumbotron at SMU games – where she’s a sideline reporter. But wherever she goes, you know it will be in style.

Known for his loud chef’s coats, Ted Bilsky of Scratch Kitchen never needs a nametag in Southlake. When he caters an event, it is pretty common for people to recognize the chef before recognizing his delicious food. "They may not remember the name of my business, but they see my chef's coat and they recognize me,’” Ted says. “It has become my calling card and trademark." Splashes of color aside, Ted has been hard at work, and in his words “disrupting the catering industry of Northeast Tarrant County.” Scratch Kitchen was founded three years ago when his oldest son Colby graduated from Texas A&M University. Disillusioned by the corporate world of cubicles and desk jobs, Colby pitched the idea of a catering company to Ted. “Six months into it we found our lifelong passion and the rest is history,” Ted says. What started as a small storefront in Southlake offering take-out meals bloomed into three-locations with a full catering service. And as any Southlake event-goer knows, the food speaks for itself. For those who haven’t tried Scratch Kitchen’s delicious dishes, the business’ growth is proof of its quality. Last year, the company grew 65 percent from 2016. According to Ted, 2018 is off to a great start. "The common theme is people say 'Gosh, you're everywhere,’” Ted chuckles. Part of his almost omnipresence comes from his constant willingness to serve his community. Scratch Kitchen caters city events, Art in the Square, chamber events, Meet the Mayor, CISD events and more. This year, Ted has been catering local nonprofit GRACE’s board meetings free of charge. “We give back profusely and whether it's paid for or it is free, it's the same level of quality, period,” Ted says.

Finnegan McDEVITT “What do you want to be when you grow up?” The quintessential question is not lost on the Rockenbaugh first grader as he takes a few spins on an office chair. “A superintendent,” Finnegan McDevitt says matter-of-factly. If that doesn’t pan out for him, he has a solid backup plan: professional golfer. Considering that the six-year-old is already actively involved with Carroll ISD and golf, he could have a good shot at either. Finnegan is a Bond Builder for the district. Earlier this year, CISD created a program that allows selected students to partner with the district and act as spokespeople for projects affiliated with the bond that passed last May. Or, in Finnegan’s words: "We tell what is happening." Bond Builders were selected through a rigorous interview process. Carroll ISD received over 90 audition tapes from hopeful students who were then narrowed down to semi-finalists. As a semi-finalist, Finnegan showed up to his interview dressed to impress with an ensemble completed by a bow tie and lapel pin. While perhaps not the first choice of most first graders, the outfit wasn’t a stretch for the six year old. "Bowties are my favorite because they're fancy!" Finnegan says. Needless to say, Finnegan nailed his interview and was one of 23 students selected as Bond Builders. The program is still in its early stages, as are many bond projects. Even so, Finnegan already knows his favorite part of being a Bond Builder. “We get to wear our green hardhats,” he says excitedly. Finnegan loves showing his Dragon Pride. It’s not uncommon to see him rocking Dragon green Chuck Taylors or a Carroll ISD pin. He looks forward to Bond Builder meetings because it’s an opportunity to dress up.

When Julie’s son, Dave, enrolled in Carroll ISD, she was looking for a way to get involved in the community. So she joined Southlake’s Women’s Club. Now, eight years later, she has served on the board twice as programs chair and was named last year’s "Member of the Year." And she continues to serve in her new role as the group’s 2018-2019 president. “Southlake Women’s Club is a group of amazing, giving women. They are the people that you want to surround yourself with,” Julie says. “It was a great way to make friends.” Julie also has served as co-chair for the Art in the Square VIP Party, décor chair for the Southlake Chamber Women’s Empowerment luncheon and décor chair for the 2017/2018 CEC Love and Hope Gala, so it’s safe to say a lot of her time is dedicated to city events. And that’s all on top of her busy career. Julie and her husband own Sterling Renovations & Design, a luxury home remodeling firm with an internal interior styling team. She takes the time to meet with each of her clients to build a relationship with them to achieve their dream home renovation. And while her work keeps her days filled, she says she takes time to give back in these roles to stay grounded. “Giving back helps me feel well-rounded in my life,” Julie says. Plus, she says her team helps make her job easier. Their team of two has grown with the addition of seven employees, including their daughter, Catherine, who acts as an interior stylist/CAD designer. “I have a great team,” Julie says. “Everyone is so knowledgeable in their own skill set, which helps things run smoothly.” Through it all, Julie helps make Southlake shine by assisting in its different community events, which helps build up that homey spirit that keeps so many people in town. “It’s a great community, and that’s really the city’s draw,” Julie says. “Once people move here, they just never leave because of that small-town feel.”

Chris BROWN Chris Brown’s style is meant to withstand the heat of his vigorous daily responsibilities. And this Southlake firefighter is particularly interested in what his coworkers are wearing by keeping a close eye on his department’s apparel. Chris was born and raised in Denison, and he joined the Southlake Fire Department 13 years ago. He was looking for something that would challenge him, keep him active and let him serve others. “I have a love for helping people,” Chris says. “We generally get people at their worst, and we get to go in and help them.” Most recently, he was honored with his department’s Director’s Award during the City of Southlake’s annual employee appreciation celebration. He was chosen because of his strong work ethic and quality all while keeping a positive attitude while on the job. This man in uniform has been in charge of ensuring the quality of his team’s bunker gear for seven years. He oversees the annual inspection of everything from their gloves to their jackets to their boots to their helmets, on top of the inspection and cleaning that comes after any team members come out of a fire. “We all have different projects that we take over,” Chris says. “And this is the one that fell in my lap. The man who did it before kind of took me under his wing before he retired, and I’ve done it since then.” This is all on top of his regular duties that come with being a local firefighter. And those alone definitely keep him on his toes. “Every day is different because no call is the same,” Chris says. “I mean, in what other role can you tear something down and then get thanked for it?”

ames Bond may like his martinis shaken, but the masterminds behind Twigs Bistro and Martini Bar are sure stirring things up in Fort Worth with their West Coast-based restaurant. Twigs opened up their first Texas location in The Shops at Clearfork last December and have already made a name for themselves among locals. With its sophisticated dining room, comfortable bar top and alluring patio, this is the kind of date spot that’s worth the drive. “Twigs stands out because of how you feel when you are there,” explains Trevor Blackwell, president of Twigs Bistro and Martini Bar. “The atmosphere is unique, fun and inviting. Plus, we have great food and drinks at reasonable prices.“

After walking by the see-through fireplace, grab a chair at the wrap-around bar to try out one of the bistro’s signature concoctions. With an extensive martini menu, everyone can find something to enjoy. For an easy-to-drink cocktail that will pair well with your entrée, order the Cucumber Crush, made with Tito’s Handmade vodka, Hpnotiq liqueur, muddled limes and cucumber. Or for a martini that packs some heat, go for the Jalapeno Cilantro Margatini, made with muddled jalapenos, oranges, lemons, limes and cilantro then combined with Lunazul Tequila, triple sec and sour and served with a salted rim. For a twist on a classic, try out the Ultimate Lemon Drop, made with Citron vodka and triple sec then shaken with fresh

The options seem limitless. “Our cocktail program is pushing the limits and evolving as we see what our guests want,” Blackwell says. Then make your way to one of the bistro’s sleek dining tables to watch entrees come out hot from the kitchen. After glancing at a few signature entrée dishes like the Pesto Margherita Chicken – a pair of pesto-encrusted chicken breasts stacked with mozzarella, tomato, chive sour cream, mashed potatoes and pesto cream – you’ll see presentation is everything. With a serving of seasonal vegetables on the side and balsamic glaze on top, this dish looks as good as it tastes. And the cheesy Crab Mac and Cheese, made with fresh blue crab meat, shallots, smoked bacon, goat cheese, cheddar and jack cheese baked in a garlic cream sauce with cavatappi pasta and finished with toasted bread crumbs, tomatoes and chives, is just as irresistible as you would think. “Our culinary team has put together a menu that is focused on providing great value with some unique and fun dishes,” Blackwell says. “Our objective being to design a menu that provides variety while also being a little adventurous.” While the restaurant does have its classics available at other locations spread along the Western coast, its Texas menu does offer new items to their diners. “We took some of our classic Twigs dishes and put a little bit of a southern twist on them,” Blackwell says. If you’d rather have something you can split with your significant other or your kids, then you are in luck with the 12-inch, handmade pizzas. While they have great classics, like Margherita, daring pizza lovers should try out the Polynesian Pizza, made with mango chili sauce, shredded Kalua pork, red onions, bacon, pineapple, mozzarella and Mama Lil’s peppers. You may think all those bold flavors would fight each other when brought together, but they create this unique orchestra of synchronized tastes that keep each bite interesting. Gluten-free diners should rejoice because they can also enjoy several of these scrumptious sensations, like Fig & Prosciutto Flatbread – a gluten-free artisan flatbread topped with gorgonzola cream sauce, mozzarella cheese, black mission figs and strips of prosciutto. There are also plenty of kid-friendly options like pint-sized pizzas, mac and cheese and Oodles of Noodles – pasta with butter and Parmesan cheese. If you’ve left room for dessert, which is a necessity, try out The Sticky Cookie – a soft double chocolate chunk cookie served over vanilla ice cream, drizzled with chocolate and caramel sauces and topped with whipped cream. It’s indulgent flavors are just begging to be paired with another sweet treat, like the Chocolate Kiss martini, made with vanilla vodka, Irish cream, coffee liqueur, crème de cocoa and garnished with shaved chocolate. They saw a need in the area for a similar concept that acted as an instrumental dining option in their home country. “We went to pizzerias like this every weekend back in Brazil,” Didi said. “There is no better place to gather with friends and have a great time.” While diners will see classic pies like their cheese and pepperoni options, patrons will come back for their vast selection of gourmet pizzas. For something a bit more unexpected, try a slice of the Chicken Tikka Masala Pizza, which features roasted chicken breast simmered in a masala sauce made with fresh tomatoes, Indian spices, cream and coconut milk and is topped with hand-pulled mozzarella cheese. Or, try their Turkish Lamb and Mint Pizza, which features minced lamb meat seasoned with sumac, lemon zest and Middle Eastern spices that is topped with a red onion marinate with lemon juice and fresh mint and hand-pulled mozzarella. For a seafood option, order their Sautéed Shrimp and Fontina Pizza – which is topped with shrimp sautéed with garlic, butter, dried peppers and lemon juice and finished with fresh parsley and fontina cheese. Bed and breakfast spots boast connections to wine tour companies and it is not uncommon to see limos roll in and out of this small town, en route to two or three vineyards. It has become both a bachelorette party paradise and romantic escape. Let someone else do all of the planning, coordinating and, most importantly, the driving by booking a wine tour. If you prefer a more independent route, make sure to have a designated driver. No matter how you choose to visit the wineries, here are a few you can’t miss. For the perfect, peaceful view of luscious vineyards, head to Hilmy Cellars. The back porch tables are by far the best seats in the house. Their cabernet sauvignon isn’t bad either. For a more upbeat scene, stop by Fat Ass Winery. They offer flights of flavored wines that probably shouldn’t taste good, but somehow do. And yes, there is a real donkey there to greet you.

BOARDINGPASS day trip Hiking While it’s still cool out, scramble to the top of Enchanted Rock for a view that will take your breath away – if the steep climb didn’t already. While the peak of the iconic granite dome is the most popular attraction, Enchanted Rock State Natural Area has so much more to offer. Test your endurance by descending Enchanted Rock and heading up the jagged rocks of Turkey Peak or the puzzle-pieced granite boulders of Little Rock. If increasing elevation is not your thing, there are trails that loop around each monolithic feature. If you are visiting on a holiday or weekend, make sure to arrive early. The park opens at 8 a.m., but due to a limited capacity, can close to new visitors as early as 9 a.m. There are electronic signs on the way there to inform hiking-hopefuls of any closures. You can also follow the official Twitter account, @GoEnchantedRock, for updates on the natural area. Summit trails will also be shut down in the event of rain, as the smooth granite can become dangerously slick. If you need a plan B, Pedernales Falls State Park is about an hour away, and it’s definitely worth the drive.

Shopping and Dining Downtown is the gem of Fredericksburg. The cutest boutique and amazing food are secondary to the overall atmosphere of hospitality. No one is in a hurry – in a good way. Stroll down Main Street and duck into the variety of adorable boutiques full of items you never knew you needed. For the spice-lover, head to Rustlin’ Rob’s. Every sauce imaginable is out and waiting to be sampled. Stocked with hot sauces, BBQ sauces, jams, spreads, marinades and more, this store is a haven for foodies. Stock up for your next at-home spa day at It’s aGlow. The peaceful shop has gorgeous collections of honeycomb calcite candle covers and other decor. When it comes to good eats, this little downtown strip does not disappoint. Shopping and savoring intertwine at Vaudeville off of Main Street. A gourmet menu is served on weekend evenings from 5 to 9 p.m. Serving featured entree such as Duck Confit with dijon potatoes, spring greens and a raspberry gastrique, Vaudeville is sure to thrill. Venture onto Llano Street for a hole-in-the-wall Italian joint that will never disappoint. Pasta Bella is pretty small, so be prepared to wait. Once you are seated, you will find that the time was more than worth it. Save room for dessert because cute little coffee shops line Main Street and offer a fair share of sweet treats!

NCL FASHION SHOW AND BENEFIT Generosity rocked the runway at the 21st annual National Charity League of Southlake Inc. Fashion Show and Benefit. High school junior and senior students, choreographed by Laura Williams, performed to benefit the 14 local charities. “This event truly brings together our entire community in support of the charities most in need in this community,” says Michelle Platt, a chair of the benefit. The highlight of the show was when the seniors, wearing Whatchamacalit dresses, were escorted by their fathers for their final walk. This year’s show raised over $100,000. I came to school in the United States in 1991, and I changed my major from law to fashion. My dad did not approve of that, but I just did it because I love what I do. I enjoyed fashion school and it just went really well from then on. I wanted to do what makes me happy, not just what makes my dad happy. THE STORE COLLECTION IS INSPIRED BY... what is in. If I see something in GQ Magazine, I buy it. I travel all over the world to see what is in, and then bring a taste of Texas. Dallas is not like New York or California or Chicago. I bring back pieces and incorporate what looks good. For example, in New York, everyone wears black. I try to bring that but add something different to make things pop. When you come into my store, you don't see just navy or black suits. It's all about plaid, patterns, anything.

STYLISTICALLY, SOUTHLAKE MEN ARE… old-school people, but we are changing that. We see a lot of pleated pants and men wearing one size bigger than they need to. The average Southlake man takes care of his health really well, so we don't have to worry about that. We see navy jackets with khaki pants, and we change that to plaid jackets with jeans. We change their shoes from black shoes to cognac. Whatever we put on the customers ends up getting them a lot of compliments. Once they get those compliments, they come back and really start to trust our judgement. We change their style step by step. We don't change it 100 degrees right away because that would be too much for their comfort levels. WOMEN IN SOUTHLAKE... live in Lululemon and David Lerner all day long. So I change their lifestyle. We give them fashion pieces for when they go out with their girlfriends or even Central Market. We just change their style here and there, but not too much. Like a nice, clean pair of jeans and retro shirt. Something that looks a little different from the ordinary. IF SOMEBODY ASKS FOR A DONATION... I'm there. If I do charity, I do it from the heart. I help with Art in the Square regularly. Whatever this community needs, I'm there for them all the way. It's great to offer good customer service, but for me, charity is the most important thing. If anybody needs anything from us, I never say no. The only thing I don't do anymore is parties. I'm not as young as I used to be, so after work I just spend time wife my family. They are top priority to me. I HAVE THE BEST… family in the world and I always smile when I talk about them. I have two beautiful daughters. One is 18 years old and one is 21 years old. My wife is a personal trainer and we have been married for 25 years. I'll love my wife until death. I'm blessed. All the blessings from God, I have them.

We can verify if the jewelry is genuine, and pay a very fair price so they’ll keep coming back.” On the sales side, Dallas Gold & Silver acts as a wholesaler, buying first-quality overstocks and closeouts, with famous designer names like David Yurman, Tiffany & Co., Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpel. “We don’t mark it up like the big box stores,” Cerrato says. “We simply have the best bargains in the business. s she flips through pages of five different homemade photo books, Nikki Stovall starts to get a little emotional. Each book was made for, or in the case of one, by previous au pairs. Page after page reveals fun times had by the Stovall family with young women from across the globe. It is clear as Nikki thumbs through the albums that while these women can only be a part of the program for a maximum of two years, they easily became a part of the family.

“I’ve had an au pair for as long as I can remember, my favorite part is learning their different languages.” Ryne Stovall, age 12 But before we get too ahead of ourselves, we know you may be wondering “what is an au pair?” Nikki has been faced with that question many times herself. “A lot of people think that I’m bringing in these super expensive, foreign nannies,” she says. There is some truth to that but it has quite a few misconceptions wrapped in as well. Au pairs come to the United States on a J-1, or Exchange Visitor, Visa. This visa is granted to individuals coming to the U.S. for work- or study-based exchange programs. Au pairs must live with their host family for a minimum of 12 months and have the option to stay up to a year longer. In the Stovall family’s case, almost all of the au pairs – they have had seven – have opted to stay longer. Before au pairs are matched with families, they go through a series of interviews. This is not just for the family’s benefit. Currently, the Stovalls are hosting Katie Holmes – an au pair from South Africa. She says the interview process really helped her feel comfortable when choosing her host family. "[Nikki] has a very detailed interview process, but that is what I appreciated about her,” Katie says. “She was so open about everything and asked very important questions. It made me feel like she was genuinely interested in getting to know me.” Katie isn’t alone in her sentiments. Nikki knows she doesn’t give a softball interview. SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

“A lot of the girls have said that it is easier to get into the CIA than to be my au pair,” Nikki laughs. But the process must be working, because the only au pair that didn’t opt for an extended visa wanted to stay but couldn’t. In addition to only being allowed to stay for a maximum of two years, au pairs must be at least 18 and no older than 26 years old. For many busy parents, the program is probably sounding too good to be true. Or you are thinking, “but at what cost?” Au pairs are paid a weekly stipend, but it is only about $200 per week. All in all, hosting an au pair costs an average of $1,579 per month. The best part? That is per family, not per child. However, even though au pairs live with host families, they are only legally allowed to work 45 hours per week, in addition to completing six credit hours of schooling while here. The program aims to be mutually beneficial for au pairs and hosts families, and according to the Stovall family, it definitely is. “I’ve had an au pair for as long as I can remember,” says Ryne Stovall, age 12. “My favorite part is learning their different languages.” All three Stovall kids happily agree: they love their au pairs. “I like them because they are more energetic than my mom and dad, so I get to play outside more,” says Tori Stovall, age 7. Her older sister echoes these sentiments. APR 18 • 85

“You can play games and be silly,” 9-year-old Carly Stovall says. All three children are incredibly active. Tori goes to swim classes, soccer and dance while Ryne is involved in basketball, football and baseball. Carly – who, according to her little sister is the busiest of the bunch – plays volleyball and softball in addition to gym and dance. The lists of activities are enough to make anyone’s head spin, and that is why Nikki swears by her au pairs. Katie has a busy life of her own as well. When she is not taking care of the Stovall trio, she attends a class at the King’s University to fulfill her schooling requirement within the au pair program. It was there that she bonded with a fellow South African au pair. "I feel very at home here,” she says. “Having a South African friend helps too because I hear the accent and we can trade stories." While the culture shock was fairly minimal according to Katie, homesickness will still set in from time to time. This is the 21-year-old’s first time to fly the coop, as she has been attending a correspondent college from home. In Johannesburg, Katie works two full-time jobs to pay her way through college as she majors in biochemistry and anatomy. The draining schedule, combined with her love for children, inspired her decision to take a gap year as an au pair. Now halfway across the world, the distance from her family and 86 • APR 18

boyfriend can be daunting. But her host family is here for her. "If I'm feeling a little bit 'blah', I know I can just tell Nikki and we'll chat,” Katie says. And there is always her favorite part of the day: “Everyday I have to wait at the bus stop for the girls. And every day both girls run out of the bus and give me a hug,” Katie says. “So it doesn't matter how bad my day is. I know at that moment that they are going to be excited to see me." The kids’ instant acceptance of Katie is not rare for them. Each au pair in the Stovall home has been greatly loved. In fact, they are now all a part of a What’s App group (basically a group chat) that allows present and former au pairs to communicate. It’s not uncommon to see birthday wishes, pictures of the kids and exciting updates within the group. Nikki likens it to a sorority, only this group of ladies is all over the world. "It's like a little family, which I really love,” Katie says. In many ways, family is an appropriate word for the Stovall’s au pairs. Many precious moments have been shared between the Southlake family and these seven women from across the globe. For example, their first au pair, Priscila, traveled from Brazil and found her home here in the U.S. She married an American and had Carl Stovall walk her down the aisle as a father traditionally would. The kids were not left out, as they filled the roles of ring bearer and flower girls. Carl and Nikki are now godparents to Priscila’s two girls. In fact, Priscila asked Nikki to be in the delivery room when both Grace and Tiffany were born. Their second au pair, Gabi, also from Brazil, became really involved with Gateway Church when she settled in to her host home. She included the Stovall family on her own milestone. “I was so honored when she asked me to be the one to baptize her,” Nikki says. The stories and memories go on. From family vacations to half marathons, every au pair has left her mark. In Ryne’s words, he “could never pick a favorite.” "Each au pair has the kids at a different age, so you take out your own little space in time with the kids,” Katie says. “I think that's so cool that they have one person that marks each stage of their life. Masterpieces, Music and Margaritas Experience many forms of art at the Annual Art in the Square in Southlake

eauty is an explosion of colors on a mountain scene; a glittering, purple French bulldog; a lifelike drawing of a crisp, Autumn tree; and more interesting and unique artwork that you can see at the 19th Annual Art in the Square in Southlake! The event features creations from more than 155 juried professional, emerging and aspiring high school artists from almost every U.S. state and a few international locations. During this three-day festival, guests can admire (and purchase!) fine art of a wide range of styles and mediums including drawings, sculptures, jewelry, ceramics, photographs and more, carefully selected by a jury that reviewed 790 applications for this year’s event. Later, take a break from perusing art to experience many other activities the festival offers. Listen to live music on two stages. Many genres will be represented throughout the weekend including jazz, pop, rock, reggae, Motown and country as well as performances from local bands and dance studios. Keep the little ones entertained at Kids Korner, where they can appreciate art in the form of face painting, washable hair coloring, sugar art and oil coloring. Or, take the kids (and anyone who wants to let out some energy) to The Zone, sponsored by Children’s Health Southlake, which includes bounce houses, inflatables, a rock-climbing wall, a new zip line and a four-way bungee trampoline! Once everyone has worked up an appetite, stop by one of many food and beverage stations to enjoy treats like tacos, roasted corn, Korean barbecue, pizza and frozen margaritas. Since 2000, the Art in the Square festival has helped the Southlake Women’s Club raise and donate more than $2.7 million to Northeast Tarrant County charities that help women, families and children overcome daily challenges. There’s no better way to see outstanding artwork, enjoy the beautiful spring weather, have fun with the entire family and benefit the community at the same time!

Travel to 19th-century France during this award-winning musical

risoner 24601 first stole bread — and the hearts of audiences everywhere — more than 30 years ago; now, Jean Valjean and the entire cast of Les Misérables are back in town with a stunning new production of this Broadway musical, presented by Cameron Mackintosh. The show follows Valjean as he escapes parole, starts a new life, looks over a beautiful young girl named Cosette after her mother dies and evades Inspector Javert, the prison officer who has been hunting Valjean for years. This dramatic musical takes viewers to a tumultuous time of passion, sacrifice, love and redemption — all with vibrant new scenery and staging. Fans of the show will love seeing performances of favorite songs, including “One Day More,” “I Dreamed a Dream,” “On My Own,” “Stars” and “Bring Him Home.” And newcomers will be pleasantly surprised with how quickly they are swept up by the brilliant storytelling. Les Misérables is based on the novel of the same name written by Victor Hugo in 1862. In 1980, the musical premiered in Paris with French lyrics by Alain Boublil and music by Claude-Michel Schönberg. This Tony Awardwinning musical is one of the longest running in the world and has been seen by 70,000,000 people in 44 countries and 22 languages! In 2012, Les Misérables was made into a movie starring Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe, which received a multitude of awards including several Oscars and Golden Globes, and helped cement the story in popular culture. This old French story is just as gripping, exciting and fantastic today as it was 156 years ago — and we can hardly wait to experience it again!
