It’s always easier to ask for help when you know who’s on the other side of the phone. When the winter storms hit the Metroplex in mid-February, neighbors could rely on neighbors to lend a helping hand. And after the snow melted and families were left with various levels of damage, they could trust Southlake-area businesses to help them repair and rebuild. That trust is something that doesn’t come overnight. It’s nurtured through years of service and improves thanks to new, valuable offerings that choose to come to this area. In this issue, Southlake Style is proud to showcase our community’s go-to local businesses in our Readers’ Choice 2021. From landscaping and pool service to customer service and barbecue, the winners featured on the pages ahead represent how those who embrace their community can find success in town. Whether you’ve lived here since Papa Bill Lafavers took the reins and opened Feedstore BBQ or you just moved to the area, we hope this issue acts as a guide to the local businesses that shape this community. And we hope you keep this month’s magazine on hand for the next time you need a local recommendation. Don’t forget to tell them we sent you.

Happy reading!

Claffey Pools Helps Residents Recover From Freeze Damage, With Help from Above

A

fter a freezing winter storm shut down power in Texas in February, many pool owners experienced damage. With plumbing lines and equipment compromised, tens of thousands of pools across Texas were damaged beyond use. The Claffey Pools team of nearly 100 employees continues to work tirelessly to restore nearly 1,000 area pool systems. Serving North Texas for more than 30 years, Claffey Pools specializes in pool construction, service and renovation. Several weeks later, the Claffey Pools team can see the finish line on what has been and will be its most complicated and challenging endeavor. We sat down with Claffey Pools president Charlie Claffey to learn more about how his team weathered the storm. FOR MORE THAN 34 YEARS… Claffey Pools has built more than 10,000 pools in North Texas. The Claffey Pools team is ranked third in the United States according to the “Pool and Spa News” Top 50 builders. Claffey Pools helps lead the industry by assisting in the adoption of Texas’ first uniform pool building code, serving the Texas Pool and Spa Coalition, the International Code Council, the Pool and Hot Tub Alliance and the Master Pools Guild.

The teamwork of employees, trade partners, supply side partners and manufacturing partners will forever change us. Our team, with daily help from above, has performed 900 assessments and estimates and repaired over 700 pools, covering a 120-mile radius, in just seven weeks. From what we are being told, the industry will be lucky to finish the balance of the repairs in seven months.

WE ARE INDUSTRY LEADERS BECAUSE… of the tireless efforts of our staff, the talents of our trade partners and a culture centered on a passionate commitment for excellence.

WE HAVE INCREDIBLE… team members that have worked seven-day weeks since the freeze event started — many working 20 hour days. We have incredible trade partners and manufacturing relationships that have been critical to the process. We have amazing people who have done amazing things.

TEXAS WAS DEVASTATED… by this winter weather. The never-before-seen cold, combined with power outages that, in some cases, lasted for days, caused immeasurable damage to homes and pools across the state. In what may go down as the single largest weather-related disaster in our nation’s history, swimming pools that rely on electricity to keep water moving were frozen solid. WE WERE OVERWHELMED… with hundreds of calls, emails and texts in the days of the freeze. Our team assisted hundreds of clients at all hours of the night with calls and field visits. After the first few days, it was apparent that managing the requests without centralized communication and processes was impossible. In less than 24 hours, our team developed a web portal that gathered the data necessary to categorize damages and dispatch field personnel. The portal went live at 5 p.m. on February 18. By February 20, we were faced with the daunting task of performing nearly 900 freeze assessments. WHAT WE HAVE DONE… in the last month can only be explained as miraculous. With our backs against the wall, the God-inspired ideas, systems, communication and execution is unfounded.

10 • APRIL 21

WE ARE GRATEFUL… to God for the inspiration and guidance. From being inspired to clear the entire supply side chain inventory before anyone else reacted to being guided to design website portals, mechanized assessments and workflow management tools, our team has always been a step ahead. THANK YOU… to our loyal clients. Throughout the entire process, our amazing clients have allowed us to pilot processes, use their homes as assessment training grounds, helped us feed our employees and even remodeled a 6,000-square-foot warehouse in one week — just to allow us to hold a never-before-seen amount of product. The friendships that are created as a result of working for so many of you is what makes each day special. Thank you.

PERSONAL ASSISTANT

wendy lang

WHY DID YOU LAUNCH SOUTHLAKE CONCIERGE? As I met new friends in Southlake, I realized how busy everyone was. I quickly realized there was space for my business. Since I have a personal assistant background to high-profile executives in Hollywood, I knew the importance of privacy and professionalism. This became the underlying theme in developing my business. WHAT KINDS OF THINGS DO YOU ASSIST PEOPLE WITH? As a lifestyle and home management company, our clientele consists mainly of busy professionals and frequent travelers. We offer elevated, personalized service to all our clients. Our personal concierge team is here to assist with day-to-day errands, deliveries, personal shopping...appointment setting and wait service for repairmen, service technicians or deliveries… [we] plan, shop, set up and order floral arrangements for home entertainment/ parties. And clients have access to our vetted vendor list and community partners. [We also assist with] general personal concierge services such as reservations: dinner, flights, hotel, car service [and] tee times. For travelers, we ready their home with a scheduled cleaning, restock the fridge and pantry. While they are away, we bring in the mail, newspaper, trash cans and deliveries; water plants; open and close the house for deliveries; and manage work being completed while they travel. HOW MANY EMPLOYEES DO YOU HAVE? The Southlake Concierge has two dedicated team members and two part-time. All team members receive the same training. We keep detailed information with each client profile, so clients are guaranteed to receive the same quality assistance no matter what concierge is there to help. WHAT IS THE FEEDBACK YOU GET FROM CLIENTS? Working so closely with our clients, we become a trusted partner. Over time, the relationship becomes intuitive and harmonious. Clients trust us with home, family, personal, confidential and security matters. They always express how lucky they are to have our help. That’s our goal! DO YOU HAVE PLANS TO EXPAND IN THE FUTURE? I’m excited to announce a new partnership with the Parkview Residence at Town Square. With this new partnership and a few others in the works, I am hoping to add a few more full-time assistants.

Connecting With The Community

Laura Hill’s Tenure As Mayor Comes To An End In the seven years since Mayor Laura Hill became the first woman in Southlake to hold the office, she has created new committees, founded organizations like SKIL (Southlake Kids Interested in Leadership) and worked to cut the city’s tax rate, among other accomplishments. The winner of Citizen of the Year in 2007 and 2018, Mayor Hill lives to serve.

Becoming Mayor

Mayor Hill first served on the city council starting in 2004. Her aspirations led her to successfully run for mayor in 2015. “I’ll never feel about any city like I do about Southlake. I share such a deep love for our community,” Mayor Hill says. “Forty-five years ago, my mom and dad moved here and never would I have ever thought that I would be mayor someday.” While she is proud to be Southlake’s first female mayor, the work comes first. “Most importantly, I hope I will be remembered for being a good mayor — involved, approachable and supportive of our community,” she says.

Culture of Communication

Mayor Hill’s impact will continue after she leaves the post in May. Among other accomplishments, she started the Mayor’s Alliance for Unity and Culture to foster communication about diversity and inclusion. One of the big events that came out of this initiative is Celebrate Southlake. “If we genuinely want a community that is the best reflec-

16 • APRIL 21

tion of all of us, then we must find what we have in common with our neighbors,” Mayor Hill says. “We must lift each other up and take the time to meet each other.” Mayor Hill will also be known for her outreach and communication. Whether it was through her Facebook page, her Instagram posts or the city’s website, she made sure Southlake heard from her. “Our level of transparency and communication is another area of immense satisfaction,” Mayor Hill says. “Our staff has always been forward-thinking, but we have really extended our reach to our citizens and even surrounding communities.” During her tenure, Mayor Hill attended 63 Meet The Mayor events, participated in 52 Mayor For The Day events and held close to 600 one-on-one meetings with citizens. “We are super informative and responsive. Whether you prefer Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, text, email, phone calls,” Mayor Hill says, “there is no way to not be in the know in Southlake if you want to be in the know.”

Looking Ahead

Mayor Hill wants citizens to be able to count on her replacement, whoever that may be. “Southlake has a history of outstanding leadership,” Mayor Hill says. “I have always said each mayor ends up being the perfect mayor for what our community needs at that moment in time. The next mayor will be a huge success.” As May’s municipal elections get closer, so too does the end of Mayor Hill’s tenure. “I enjoyed the job so much, even the challenges. For me personally, I’ve gained a lot of confidence and knowledge that will be invaluable to me moving forward,” Mayor Hill says. “No matter what I do next, being mayor of Southlake will be the best volunteer job I ever had.” SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

CARROLL ISD MAINTAINS COVID-19 SAFETY PROTOCOLS THROUGH MARCH Carroll ISD’s COVID-19 safety protocols remained in place through March. After Texas Gov. Greg Abbott ended the mask mandate and reopened Texas to 100%, the Texas Education Agency updated its public health guidelines stating school boards have the full authority to decide their mask policies. The current district policy requires students over 9, teachers and staff to wear masks while inside Carroll ISD buildings, according to its website. The board of trustees received recommendations from the Tarrant County Public Health Department, as well as a presentation of survey data from the district's COVID19 response team. The board ultimately decided not to change any of its health and safety protocols, and the CISD COVID-19 response team will meet again this month to reevaluate the district’s current safety protocols.

SOUTHLAKE POLICE SGT. REUNITES WITH RESCUED DOG After rescuing him from drowning from thin ice on Valentine’s Day, Sgt. Gaylon Music reunited with Shadow the dog in the warmth of Southlake Police Headquarters later that month. On Sunday, February 14, Southlake Police received a call that a black Labrador fell through a thin layer of ice into the pond at White’s Chapel United Methodist Church. When Sgt. Gaylon Music got there, Shadow had been in the water for more than 15 minutes and was waiting for a ladder truck. Knowing that he wasn’t going to last much longer, Sgt. Music plunged into the -4-degree water and started wading toward Shadow while fastened onto a harness. When Shadow’s owner hopped onto a pool float and swam toward him, Sgt. Music extended a pole toward Shadow and his owner and pulled them both to safety after they grabbed on. A week later, Shadow and his family paid Sgt. Music a visit at Southlake Police headquarters. Sgt. Music said Shadow was wagging his tail and licking him the whole time he was there.

INSIDE CARROLL 2019 RECEIVES THE TSPRA BEST OF CATEGORY AWARD Inside Carroll, a joint partnership between Carroll ISD and Southlake Style, received the Texas School Public Relations Association Best Of Category for a district with less than 10,000 students for its 2019-2020 edition. The CISD Board & Community Relations Department also received numerous gold and silver awards, and Justin Dearing was honored with a crystal certificate of merit for Carroll ISD’s video portfolio during the 2021 annual conference. ART IN THE SQUARE POSTPONED UNTIL SEPTEMBER 2021 After canceling the 2020 Art in the Square, the Southlake Women’s Club announced it would postpone the three-day festival until September. "Changing the dates to September 24-26, 2021 for the 21st Art in the Square was the right choice," says Sherri Whitt, the marketing chair for the 2021 AITS. "Our top priority is the safety and well-being of our artists, patrons, volunteers, vendors, partners and community." The 2019 event was Art in the Square’s 20th anniversary in Southlake, when the event surpassed its $3 million total donation mark for its beneficiaries. LADY DRAGON BASKETBALL ENDS SEASON 23-7 Although it eventually fell to Plano East 56-42, the girls basketball team has a lot to be proud of this season. In defeating Timber Creek 40-27, the Lady Dragons basketball team went to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2004. The team also only lost seven games in a 30-game schedule. The game against Timber Creek was the 19th where the Dragons held a team to under 30 points. Eleven varsity players were named to the 4-6A Academic All-District team, three players received honorable mentions for the 4-6A All-District team, Kelsey Boyette was named to the 4-6A All-District Second Team and seniors Jordyn Sowell and Brittney Flexer were named to the 4-6A All-District First Team. Sophomore Camryn Tade was also named the 2021 4-6A Offensive MVP. DRAGON SWIM & DIVE FINISHES SEASON WITH IMPRESSIVE STATE SHOWING The boys swim and dive team placed fourth while the girls team took third place at the state competition. When it came time for the girls to compete, diver Hailey Hernandez captured her fourth straight state championship title while Corbyn Cormack came in first place and set a new record during the 100 Yard Fly. Cormack was also awarded the title of 6A State Championship Swimmer of the Meet. On the boys side, Mason Edmund and Alex Zettle placed fourth and seventh, respectively, in the 200 Freestyle. For the boys divers, Manuel Borowski placed first while fellow Dragon Jackson Miller came in fifth. Other swimmers who placed include Jackson Pogue who came in fifth in the 100 Fly, Andrew Zettle who came in seventh in the 100 Freestyle and the swimmers of the 400 Freestyle Relay who came in fourth.

DINO DEEDS PROVIDES LAUGHS, ACKNOWLEDGEMENT TO LOCAL HELPERS Wrangler Betty and Dinos Harriet and Millie are hitting the streets to prove everyday heroes are not extinct. The three local friends, who are asking to stay anonymous, came together to start Dino Deeds, a way to showcase those doing good deeds in the community — all while sporting inflatable dinosaur costumes. Starting on January 29, the three turned to Facebook community pages and local officials to find out who was making a difference. While the Dino Deeds women often hear they make people’s days with their surprise visits, they know they are getting more in return. As Harriet puts it, the dinos are three women with a heart for service. And Wrangler Betty hopes their actions inspire. Dino Deeds do accept nominations for its visits. You can learn more about the group on its Facebook page.

OLD UNION ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL NAMED REGION 11 ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR For more than 12 years, Reigan O’Quinn has faithfully served Carroll ISD as a teacher, counselor and assistant principal. Her hard work has paid off last month when the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association named her the Region 11 assistant principal of the year. Leading the Old Union Elementary staff and students for three years, Reigan previously served as the cocoordinator for the K-6 counseling department and team leader for special programs at Carroll Elementary School. “Reigan has spent time in numerous roles throughout the district, and each of those roles has prepared her to be an essential part of our team here at Old Union,” Old Union principal Jon Fike says in MySouthlakeNews. com. “Reigan O’Quinn is a special person who works hard to make sure our Old Union Dragons have a great experience every day.” CARROLL ISD OPENS COVID-19 VACCINATION CLINIC Dragon staff members who had not been vaccinated from COVID-19 had the chance to get vaccinated last month at the CISD Administration Center. Earlier in March, the district was looking for providers that could help them vaccinate its staff from COVID-19. After reaching out to multiple clinics to no avail, Dragon dad Dr. Niraj Mehta offered to bring the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to Carroll staff and instructors. On-site vaccinators administered approximately 90 shots an hour at the administration center, and their follow-up shot will be administered on Friday, April 2. “We’re making it much more convenient for our staff to get vaccinated and protect them from this virus,” lead nurse Karen Flexer says. “We are very excited about this partnership with Dr. Mehta.”

SOUTHLAKE CULTURAL COMPETENCE ADVOCACY GROUP PUSHES BACK The Cultural and Racial Equity For Every Dragon (CREED) organization issued a letter to Carroll ISD demanding for the adoption of a Cultural Competence Action Plan. On Friday, March 12, CREED and its supporters assembled at Frank Cornish Park in Southlake Town Square to demand the district adopt CCAP or another mutually acceptable diversity, equity and inclusion plan. Texas State Senator Royce West is representing the organization on behalf of his firm West & Associates L.L.P. Work on the plan was put on hold after Southlake parent Kristin Garcia filed a lawsuit against the trustees for allegedly violating the Texas Open Meetings Act and district court judge Josh Burgess issued a temporary restraining order against the district. CREED’s demand letter requests any settlement regarding the pending lawsuit would not undermine the adoption or implementation of any diversity, equity or inclusion plan and requested to be part of any mediation team resolving the matter. If they are unable to resolve the issue through negotiation, West says they may file suit against the board for failing to protect its students in the district. CISD Assistant Superintendent for Board and Community Relations Julie Thannum says the district and Garcia will participate in a mediation soon to try and resolve their differences. “We are hopeful our efforts in mediation will allow us to have an open discussion about how to move forward,” Julie says. “And at the end of the day, the only way we move forward is together.” SOUTHLAKE KIWANIS GIVES INAUGURAL HEART OF SERVICE AWARD The Southlake Kiwanis Club gave out its first Heart of Service Award last month to the late John Stokes. After serving the Southlake Police Department for more than 20 years, John passed away in November due to a sudden medical event. Southlake Kiwanis president Elizabeth Whatley presented the award to John’s family at the Southlake Police Department headquarters on March 3. “I’m glad we’re honoring SROs, but I’m really glad the first one is going to John Stokes,” Elizabeth says. “Everything I heard about him was fabulous. I wish he were alive so we could give it to him personally, but I’m really happy we were able to honor the whole family regardless.” SOUTHLAKE RANKED IN TOP 100 SUBURBS OF NICHE 2021 RANKINGS Southlake ranked in several categories on Niche’s Best Places To Live rankings for 2021. According to the rankings, Southlake placed in the top 100 for best suburbs to live in America out of more than 6,000 entries. It also ranked in the top 200 for best places to live in America and ranked in the top 4% of best places to raise a family and suburbs with the best public schools in America. In Texas, Southlake placed fifth for best suburbs to buy a house and raise a family out of 413 entries.

As a teenager, he got his first job cleaning at construction sites and laying sod for a landscaping company. Now as the owner of Atwood Custom Homes, he builds residents’ dream homes one brick at a time. Established in 2009, Atwood Custom Homes builds premier luxury homes in Southlake, Keller, Westlake and Colleyville. Jon knows how much time and commitment it takes to build your forever home from scratch — that’s why he’s outlined his 17 years of experience in his book “Building A Quality Custom Home: What You Need To Know.” “I’m all about quality, time and money,” Jon says. “I’ve got a whole team of support people, project managers and creative designers that make it work, no matter how challenging.” Whenever he takes on a new project, Jon involves himself in every step of the Atwood process, making sure his team gets everything right from designing to construction. SOUTHLAKE’S

BARBECUE B AC K B O N E FEEDSTORE BBQ LOOKS BACK AS IT CELEBRATES ITS 20TH ANNIVERSARY BY DAVID DUNN PHOTOS BY EMILEE PRADO

S

eventy years ago, a little corner store stood along White Chapel Boulevard. No one knew that one day it would grow up to be one of Southlake’s most popular restaurants. The building has been given many names throughout the years: the Bailey Feed Store, Miller’s Grocery Store, Dee’s Hitchin’ Post and Southlake Feed & Tack. Today locals know it as Feedstore BBQ, and they all line up to dine on its delicious barbecue. “There are parts of this building that go back to the early ’50s, maybe even ’40s,” general manager Mike Lafavers reflects. “This place has been here longer than anybody else here. There’s a lot of history here.” Owned and operated by the Lafavers family, Feedstore BBQ is the brainchild of Papa Bill and Phyllis “Mema” Lafavers, who oversee the restaurant alongside their son Mike. With April marking Feedstore’s 20th anniversary, Papa Bill and Mema reflect on the foundation they’ve established, the community culture they’ve helped cultivate and the legacy they’re leaving for their grandchildren.

COMING TO SOUTHLAKE

The Lafavers originally lived in Carrollton before moving to Southlake in July 1974. Looking to get away from the affluent, country club scene, Papa Bill wanted to give his family space to grow. “I was raised in the country,” Papa Bill says. “Country schools, country roads. I decided we [were] going to move back to the country, so we started looking all over for a new place to call home.” Eventually, a real estate friend recommended the Lafavers move to Southlake, which, at the time, was still largely undeveloped. So they and their four children — Mike, Eva, Mark and Matt — moved to a small property off White Chapel Boulevard. Today, that property is called Lafavers Acres and houses a variety of donkeys, goats and cattle. SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

“We owned two of the oldest houses on this street. One house was 100 years old. The rest were torn down. We called our house the dog house because the people before us had two great big old dogs that scratched the whole surface. I actually thought it was dirty,” Mema chuckles. But in front of the Lafavers’ property was the humble Miller’s Grocery Store, where the kids would go to fill up on gas every weekend. “It was a losing business,” Mema recalls. “It lost money every day. The backside of the place was in horrible shape, and the property ran up right against the fence of our property. They didn’t even have a parking lot.” The store cycled through two other owners before the Lemieux family bought it in the mid-’80s and turned it into Southlake Feed & Tack. Papa Bill then purchased the store in 1997 and ran it for three years before making a change. At first, they thought about tearing it down and adding it to their acreage. Then they thought about turning it into a Dragon merchandise store for Carroll ISD. Finally they made the decision to turn the feed store into Feedstore BBQ.

once. Then they’d put us up by the cash register, and we’d wash potatoes and clean the tables.” From the jump, the Lafavers knew it would be difficult to establish Feedstore BBQ in the heart of the Metroplex. “When we opened Feedstore, this old man came in, sat down and started talking to me over lunch,” Papa Bill recalls from his first year of business. “As I was talking about the place, he says, ‘You know, barbecue is the hardest business in the world to make money in.’ It’s just so competitive, and everybody’s got their own spin on it — especially in Texas.”

MORE THAN A RESTAURANT

Shortly after opening, Papa Bill understood Feedstore BBQ needed to build its own presence in Southlake, especially with the restaurant tucked away from the main traffic on Southlake Boulevard. “This is a destination,” Papa Bill says. “You don’t just drive along and stumble onto it. You have to be coming to Feedstore specifically for our barbecue.” Feedstore found an organic conBARBECUE BEGINNINGS nection to the community through When Feedstore BBQ first opened the Southlake Carroll Dragons. Locals recognize Feedstore’s high standard of customer service. Not only has the restaurant been awarded several accolades by the Southlake Chamber of Commerce, “The Dallas Observer” and “D Magazine” but also it was honored closer to home in Southlake Style’s Readers’ Choice 2020 and 2021. Mike says he’s excited to see Feedstore continue to grow in the hands of its third generation and he’s already preparing Kamy, her sister Katy and cousin Cameron to inherit Feedstore after he’s gone by teaching them the business and bookkeeping aspects of the restaurant. “Mom and dad established the foundation of this company so that when me, my brother and sister aren’t here, our shares and ownership can only go to our kids,” Mike says. “They’ve set up a line of succession where we make sure it stays in the family.” While Kamy is eager to lead and add her own spin to the restaurant, Papa Bill is even more content knowing Feedstore will continue to provide for the community well beyond his time. “People in the community look at you like, ‘You are Southlake,’” Papa Bill expresses. “We care about everything and everyone, and we make it the best we can every day. It’s just a good feeling knowing that we aren’t just living in the community — we are the community.”

them by keeping the food at a high quality and maintaining a family-friendly atmosphere all the time,” Papa Bill says. “It isn’t just a business. We know most of the people coming in here.”

‘YOU ARE SOUTHLAKE’

Many restaurants were placed in a state of jeopardy due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While Feedstore BBQ did experience a drop in profits in 2020, it continued to succeed thanks to not only shifting to takeout but also the support of its customers. “The loyalty of the customers in the area is what kept us going this entire time,” Kamy says. “We were secure enough to keep doing what we were doing.” The pandemic hit closer to home for Feedstore BBQ. Last summer, one of its employees tested positive for COVID-19. Instead of brushing it under the rug, Mike shut down the building, deep cleaned the restaurant and tested all of his employees. Even after Texas fully reopened, Feedstore BBQ continued to operate at partial capacity out of concern for its customers. Kamy says they were largely complimented for their transparency, honesty and precaution. “It was surprising to hear how many people were impressed because not a lot of restaurants felt the need to disclose,” Kamy says. “We’re so open and honest and everybody knows us, so it’d be hard to even keep a secret like that.”

here's to supporting local businesses Small businesses are the heart and soul of the economy. We may not have the resources of Fortune 500 companies, but we share the love for our communities and the collective power to make a difference. This winter’s freeze wrought havoc on an already precarious situation for so many. Trusted relationships with local businesses like insurance agents, plumbers, contractors and pool builders are the calm still getting many of us through the storm. In times like these, I’m prouder than ever to be a small business serving this community. This month, we’ve utilized our collective resources for compiling your opinions on the best area businesses across five categories: food and drink, health and wellness, entertainment, services and retail. The pages that follow are the results of thousands of your nominations and votes. I ask you to let them serve as one big community referral when you need them most. They can also serve as a reminder to patronize the very businesses who support our schools, youth sports teams and local charities each and every day. Studies have shown that as much as $68 out of every $100 spent locally gets recirculated within the community. When we support local businesses, we support one another.

FEATUR ED BUSINESS

P R O MOTI O N

A CLASSIC KIA FAMILY Classic Kia Carrollton Creates Community Through World-Class Customer Service

B

uying a car should be as fulfilling as buying a home. This is advice Jesse Hull took from his wife Kathy Hull more than 20 years ago. Customers will easily forget about what they paid for a vehicle, but they will never forget the experience, good or bad. At Classic Kia Carrollton, Jesse treats his customers the same way he treats everyone at his dealership — like family. An automobile veteran who has worked in the industry for over 25 years, Jesse moved to Southlake in 2011 after working as a general sales manager in Arizona for 16 years. Knowing the successful reputation of Carroll ISD and its Dragons, Jesse felt Southlake would not only be the best place to grow his own business but also raise his family. With Jesse managing dealerships in Dallas and his wife Kathy becoming a top-producing realtor with Keller Williams Realty in Southlake, their three kids Garrett, Averi and Brody benefited from the top-notch academics and athletics offered in the Carroll school system and the tight bonds made within the community. Near the end of 2019, Jesse started working for Tom and Susan Durant at their Classic Chevrolet store on Highway 114, and shortly thereafter, the Durants offered the Hulls an opportunity to purchase Classic Kia Carrollton. Today they continue to serve the community by providing exceptional customer service just 15 minutes from Southlake Town Square. “We don’t want you to have a typical experience,” Jesse says. “We want to build relationships and longterm customers based on the way they’re treated. Our motto within the Classic Group is ‘Relax and enjoy the difference.’ This goes for our employees and our customers. That is really what it comes down to for us.” Jesse and Kathy would like to invite the Southlake community to take the short drive from Southlake Town Square to Classic Kia Carrollton, relax and enjoy the difference.

(L-R) Brody, Jesse, Kathy, Garrett and Averi Hull

The Evolution Of Stargazing

The NexStar Evolution Telescope Captures The Night In Vivid HD

T

here’s nothing quite as tranquil as gazing into the night sky. All you need is a telescope with a clear lens for perfect viewing. Whether you’re a beginner or a veteran stargazer, Celestron’s NexStar Evolution 8 HD Telescope will help you see what’s up there. The Evolution’s 8-inch EdgeHD optical tube produces a focal plane that is three times flatter than standard telescopes, allowing for enhanced imaging perfect for taking pictures. Its StarBright XLT optical coatings brighten your view without losing any of the sight quality, and brass worm gears installed alongside the motors greatly improve its tracking accuracy. Accessories like the wedge mount help take even longer exposure images with greater detail, and with an Edge HD reducer lens that allows up to 480 times magnification, you won’t miss anything in front of your finderscope. But the standout elements for this user-friendly telescope lie in its technology. With the SkyPortal app’s AutoAlign feature, you can scan the sky, analyze star patterns and calculate the most aligned mount from your phone. That way you can spend less time setting up and more time observing. And with a long-lasting lithium-iron-phosphate battery, you can stargaze for up to 10 hours before needing to recharge. Whether you’re just getting into astronomy or are curious for even deeper space explorations, the NexStar Evolution 8 HD Telescope will take you beyond the stars.

Career Advice From A Best Friend At Work

S

tudies prove having a best friend at work can help make us more successful in our careers. It keeps us more engaged in our jobs, and it enables us to be healthier and happier. Gallup is most famous for this research in its article "Why We Need Best Friends at Work." I have such gratitude for my work relationships, especially my best friend at work. Throughout my 18-year career, which I started as a mechanical engineer in diesel engines, to now working in quality for a large industrial company, I have relied on a best friend at work. That relationship has made me feel supported, encouraged and willing to take risks, which has led to significant career accomplishments. Unfortunately, not everyone has access to a best friend at work. Many of us are working from home in the pandemic, not allowing for easy access to our networks for career advice and support. We aren't running into our work friends and mentors in the hallways, elevators or break rooms like we were last year. Those run-ins allowed us to get input on work-related questions fairly often and quickly. I miss being able to ask my best friend at work a question about preparing for an upcoming presentation or getting some input on how to bring up a topic with my boss. For some of us, maybe we don't have friends or mentors at work. Perhaps we started at a new company and haven’t found our people yet. Maybe we don’t mesh with the people we work with and, there-

fore, we have not made these types of relationships that help us in our jobs. Further still, perhaps some of us continue to maintain our network well during work from home, but we want an unbiased or anonymous voice on an issue. And maybe some of us do not feel comfortable asking for certain advice with our established contacts. I founded My Best Friend At Work to literally be your best friend at work for all these reasons. My Best Friend At Work (MBFAW) provides free career tips ranging from imposter syndrome and personal branding to virtual meeting etiquette and tips for making small talk during conference calls. If you have a specific work-related question or need some confidential advice that you don't want to take to your mentors or advisors, ask MBFAW and get the advice you need. MBFAW will give you an answer like a best friend: honest, direct, non-judgmental and helpful responses to enable your success! MBFAW is also a valuable resource for those graduating from college, needing interview and networking suggestions and, ultimately, later when they need career advice and support. My family and I are newer to Southlake, moving here in November of 2019. We have felt so welcomed, love the area and are extremely happy to be here. I look forward to being able to give back to the community as a business owner in Southlake and help you or someone in your family with career advice.

Bondi Bowls Brings The Beach To Locals With A New Food Truck

T Bondi Bowls Instagram: @Bondi.Bowls BondiBowlsUSA.com

he beach feels a little bit closer thanks to Bondi Bowls. The vibrant food truck drove into the DallasFort Worth foodie scene on March 6, bringing fresh, immune-boosting dishes with it. The DFW truck, the first franchisee of Bondi Bowls, immediately found a community. At its grand opening at Southlake Jazzercise, Bondi Bowls DFW owner and North Richland Hills resident Caitlin Crockett says she could see people embracing the concept. While it’s easy to feel drawn in by the bright millennial pink and palm-covered truck, Caitlin believes locals accepted the concept thanks to its inviting nature and quality dishes. Bondi Bowls’ welcoming spirit comes from its founder, Bailey Wilson, who built the

brand after living in Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia. Bailey moved to the area after graduating from college, but she came back home to Arcadia, Oklahoma, in March 2020. Missing the beach’s surf and chill cafes, Bailey wanted to share the lifestyle and beloved cuisine, so she opened Bondi Bowls’ first truck last June. Caitlin experienced the hype of the brand when visiting Edmond last September. “I was going up to Edmond, and I saw Bondi Bowls and went to get a bowl. I loved the vibe and their overall business model,” Caitlin says. After learning more about the concept, Caitlin met Bailey, and the two worked together to bring the experience to Texas. Despite her lack of experience in the food and

beverage industry, Caitlin says her previous professional roles and, the support from her twin sister and brother-in-law, gave her the tools necessary to start Bondi Bowls. After graduating from college, Caitlin worked as a Disney World performer, shaping her passion for customer service. After taking several sales positions and now acting as a jazzercise instructor, Caitlin has learned how to make connections and inspire others. So after working with her family, finding and redesigning a former snow cone truck and shadowing Bailey, Caitlin was ready to roll. And she’s excited to lead her employees to success. “I’ve always found myself in leadership roles, so I thought I should just embrace that. All my talents and job experiences have combined to make this great,” Caitlin says. “One of the reasons I’m most excited to be my own boss is being able to teach my employees and other people leadership and customer service skills.” Bondi Bowls offers a refined menu with two fruits at its foundation: acai and pitaya berries. Acai is high in omega fatty acids, Vitamin C and promotes heart and skin health, making for a delicious and nutritious base. Pitaya berry, also known as dragon fruit, offers a sweeter base and is high in vitamins, magnesium, minerals and fiber, but it’s still low in both calories and sugar. Thankfully, each of these bases allows diners to enjoy vegan, plant-based, gluten- and dairy-free items that are filling and flavorful. Those looking for an extra kick can upgrade their bowl with a mix-in, like additional pea-based protein, prebiotics, probiotics, multivitamins, fiber, biotin and Ashwagandha and Ltheanine. “I’m a fan of putting stuff in your body that makes you your best self,” Caitlin says. Bondi Bowls offers six pre-designed bowls, like its Clovelly, an acai bowl accented with blueberries, raspberries and kiwi, and its Bronte, a pitaya bowl topped with homemade vegan granola, bananas and Nutella. Guests are also welcome to build their own bowls using toppings like vegan chocolate chips, goji berries, chia seeds and bee pollen. The truck also serves refreshing snacks, like its strawberry basil lemonade, made with no refined sugar, and sugar-free caramel cold brew. Kids will love the shaved ice, with flavors including blue bubblegum and wedding cake. Bondi Bowls DFW does use the Edmond truck to source several of its vital ingredients, but Caitlin is finding ways to integrate local products — like its honey and Buon Giorno coffee. Bondi Bowls is available for private events across the Metroplex, but it’s also hosting several public stops nearby, including at Colleyville’s Remington Park on April 3 and 10. Caitlin also says she wants to bring Bondi Bowls to various area neighborhoods so that families can enjoy these dishes together. At her first neighborhood event last month, Caitlin got a kick out of seeing kids enjoy their shaved ice of choice while their parents drank coffees and dined on bowls. “I just saw them all sitting on the curb and thought, ‘This is so adorable,’” Caitlin says. Whether it’s for a fruity breakfast or satisfying snack, Bondi Bowls proves that healthy food can still make waves.

‘New’ Bar In Town

Southlake’s Mi Cocina Completes Its Interior Renovation

Mi Cocina 1276 Main St. Southlake 817.410.6426 MiCocina.com

66 • APRIL 21

One longtime Southlake Town Square restaurant has a new look. Home to the Southlake Style Readers’ Choice 2021 top cocktail (the Mambo Taxi), Mi Cocina, located at 1275 Main St., temporarily closed its doors in January to undergo a remodel of its dining room and bar. Now, the beloved restaurant is back and sleeker than ever. The Southlake Mi Cocina has been open for more than 21 years. Mi Cocina’s parent company, M Crowd Restaurant Group, CEO and president Edgar Guevara says this location holds a special place for him, and he wanted to transform the location into something locals could enjoy for years to come. “During the reimage, we took everything down to the studs and have created a more modern, yet familiar, space that we believe everyone will be very proud of,” Guevara says. The redesign blends contemporary pieces with modern Mexican influences, giving off a sophisticated vibe. Updates include an expanded mezzanine dining space, a semi-secluded booth section, an interior balcony that overlooks the

main dining room and a refreshed patio. But the crown jewel has to be the relocated and enhanced bar, which also offers more seating options for those interested in stopping by for a cocktail. As patrons take in the bar’s details, they will notice chic additions incorporating various artisans, like the brass-topped cocktail tables from Sean Springer, bar display case by Adrian Orona and handcrafted tile made in Los Angeles. Guevara says the investment is the company’s way of showing the Southlake community how grateful M Crowd Restaurant Group is for its patronage. “It’s our way of saying thank you for allowing Mi Cocina to serve Southlake for the past two decades, and we look forward [to] creating family memories and traditions for many years to come,” Guevara says. So next time you need a happy hour destination or family-friendly restaurant that will satisfy your whole group, look no further than Southlake Town Square.

Culinary Delights In Colleyville

locally owned eateries

Worth Exploring

Connections transform culinary experiences. Talking to the pros behind the bar, meeting the owner as she greets tables or recognizing the head chef bustle around an open-concept kitchen — all those little moments lure guests in and help them feel the heart of a restaurant. Colleyville is filled with independent eateries, each with owners who want to know their diners. So whether you meet Charlotte at The Londoner while grabbing a pint or Dorothy at DessertRX when you’re craving a sweet, here are just a few of the stops known to wow thanks to their personalized take on dining.

2

1

Filled with dark wood seating arrangements and ornate accents, it’s hard not to feel the part as soon as you enter through The Londoner’s doors. After taking in the scene, make your way to the bar to look over its extensive drinks list, filled with beloved pints that will quench any thirst. Complete the experience by pairing your cold one with a hot starter, like its Guinness cheese steak mini sliders — a beer-braised ribeye served with sauteed mushrooms, caramelized peppers, onions and Swiss cheese — or its Chips & Curry — house-cut fries dusted with a curry seasoning blend and served with aioli and hot pineapple sauce. After spending some time at the bar top, you’ll get to know the story behind The Londoner’s team; it’s owned and operated by a dad-and-daughter duo, Barry and Charlotte Tate. So you can feel good about splurging when dining at this family-owned operation. TheLondonerPub.com

After enjoying a drink, or two, Tom and chef Ying Aikens are ready to welcome diners at Next Bistro. Its expansive menu covers a wide range of cuisines, but each dish comes out treated with care. It doesn’t matter if you order a delicate entree, like its seafood trio, complete with Chilean sea bass, a George Bank scallop and a tiger prawn, or a hearty slow-braised lamb osso buco, diners can expect precision and flavor with each bite. Plus with an award-winning wine program and plenty of scrumptious starters and sides, it’s not hard to order with your heart once looking over the menu. Thankfully, Next’s staff stands ready with recommendations for how to map out your dining experience, as well as provide more options with new seasonal and limited-time specials. NextBistroTX.com

It’s a family affair over at DessertsRX, an organic cafe known for its delicious treats. Owner Dorothy Warda was inspired to open the eatery after her daughter started experiencing health concerns. After changing her, and her entire family’s, diets, their lives were forever changed. Now the Wardas are sharing their hand-crafted creations with the local community. First-time diners won’t believe its noCheesecake products are dairy-, gluten- and refined sugar-free and made with superfood ingredients. But those added benefits only enhance the desserts’ flavors. Whether you split a tangy lemon rose, which also includes a hint of turmeric, or a blue matcha slice, complete with wild hibiscus and medicine flower, these are treats you can feel good about eating. Angel Falls The largest uninterrupted waterfall in the world, Angel Falls is a massive 979-meter Venezuelan waterfall that

pours more than 2 billion gallons of water into the Carrao River every day. Named after the American aviator Jimmie Angel, Angel Falls is part of the Canaima National Park and is three times higher than the Eiffel Tower in Paris. If it looks a little familiar, that’s because the Walt Disney films “Dinosaur” and “Up” modeled its own waterfalls after it. During the summer, the water evaporates into a steamy mist before it even touches the ground. But in rainy weather, it can overflow into two separate waterfalls, spraying water up to a mile away. The fastest ways to get there are either by helicopter or by canoeing up the Canaima Lagoon. And if Angel Falls’ size is a little intimidating, there are smaller El Sapo and Sapito waterfalls surrounding it that you can enjoy at your leisure. Salto-Angel.com

Mauna Loa

The largest active volcano on the planet may not sound like the safest destination. But don’t worry. Mauna Loa hasn’t erupted since 1984, and the United States Geological Survey is constantly monitoring it for signs of disruption. Covering more than half of the Hawaii island, Mauna Loa, or “Long Mountain,” is the star attraction behind Hawaii’s Volcano National Park and stands more than 55,000 feet tall. Erupting 33 times since 1843, Mauna Loa is covered in more than 15,000 miles of lava that has hardened into solid rock. It pumps over 12 million meters of lava daily, with volcanic gas commonly emitting from its fissures. And with camping and hiking trails circulating around the island, it’s simple to get a permit and experience all of the magnificence this volcanic titan has to offer. GoHawaii.com

Mount Everest

The highest peak in the Himalayas, Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world at 29,000 feet. First discovered in 1841 by British geographer Sir George Everest, Mount Everest brings in about 800 climbers every year attempting to reach the summit. Inexperienced hikers should be warned. The harsh climate keeps the mountain at -20-degree freezing weather, and the increased elevation makes it difficult to breathe with 66% less oxygen in each breath. More than 300 people have died while climbing the mountain. For those that can persevere the 10-week trek, they join a group of 4,000 climbers that made the expedition up and down the mountain. For those that don’t want to test the forces of Mother Nature, don’t worry. There are several base camp and flight tours you can experience that are warmer, not as dangerous and have Wi-Fi. Great Barrier Reef

Spanning more than 1,430 miles, or 70 million football fields, the Great Barrier Reef is the largest living structure on Earth with more than 2,900 reefs and 900 islands comprising its makeup. Located alongside the East coast of Australia, the Great Barrier Reef has more than 600 types of hard and soft coral that houses more than 1,500 fish species, 215 bird species, 17 sea snake species and six turtle species. It’s so big that 10% of the world’s total fish species can be found in its reef. Its diversity of plant and animal life make the Great Barrier Reef perfect for some deep-sea scuba diving, which you can sign up for with any one of its local tourism companies. And with other exciting attractions such as sailing, swimming and a slew of savory seafood restaurants, you won’t run out of ways to explore the exotic Great Barrier Reef. GreatBarrierReef.org

FIVE MINUTES with ...

Highland Landscaping President Advocates For Small Businesses On Capitol Hill

I

an Maclean has always been an advocate for small businesses. As Highland Landscaping’s president for more than 18 years and as an executive board member for the Southlake Chamber of Commerce, Ian consistently has his pulse on the business community and its greatest needs. Now as chairman of the U.S. Small Business Council, Ian appears before lawmakers and advocates for legislation that benefits small businesses, including both of the stimulus packages that went before congress. HIGHLAND LANDSCAPING GOT ITS START… in an old truck. My brother, sister and I were operating out of a one-room office in my house, and the barn behind my house was our shop. Once we got into operating three crews, we started branching out to doing landscape installations, focusing on maintenance and irrigation work. OUR FIRST BIG ACCOUNT… was Chick-fil-A. They wanted a big overhaul to take it from a bland, generic commercial landscape to something that created interest and discussion. We turned that Chick-fil-A into something of a botanical garden with many interesting elements going around the building. THE GREATEST RETURN ON INVESTMENT OF MARKETING IN OUR COMPANY’S HISTORY… was a little sign in the Chick-fil-A drive-thru. I didn’t know it at the time, but that little $25 sign would wind up generating millions of dollars in revenue. Our phone immediately started ringing off of the hook. People would call us from the drive-thru, wanting us to come and do something for their home or business. We picked up several high-visibility accounts from there, like the Hilton in Southlake Town Square, the Southlake Chamber and the city itself. AFTER SERVING AS THE SOUTHLAKE CHAMBER CHAIRMAN FOR TWO TERMS… a member of the U.S. Chamber came to my office. I sent him away twice over the course of three weeks. On the third time, I told my receptionist to bring him in, so I could send him packing once and for all. Once he starts talking, I realized he’s talking about all the things I’m passionate about — issues that affect not just my business, but most small businesses across the U.S. He started telling me about the Small Business Council, and I asked him, ‘How do I get involved?’ I got a call from Washington asking me to join, I started attending meetings and getting involved in various committees until I became chairman.

WHEN THE PANDEMIC BEGAN LAST YEAR… there was a temptation to cower in fear, run, hide and close the doors. We started putting things in place like stanchions and barricades that created 10-foot physical distance. We had a mask policy, disinfectant diffusers, sanitized common touch surfaces throughout the day and put hand sanitizers all over the place. We did everything we could to protect the people in operation and go full steam ahead as carefully as we could. THE BIGGEST ECONOMIC ISSUES THE COUNTRY IS FACING REGARDING THE PANDEMIC… are businesses that are forced to remain closed in certain sectors. That’s obviously very devastating for small businesses. I think in the coming months, we’re going to hear some heartbreaking statistics of how many businesses weren’t able to survive. WE HAVE MUCH MORE TARGETED PPP… that’s rolling out right now. The administration just announced they’re going to focus on businesses with less than 20 employees for a week, and they’re going to be expanding the amount of PPP for food and hospitality businesses. Those are all good moves in the right direction because those businesses were hit a lot harder than other industries were. That will hopefully bring a targeted and speedy infusion of much-needed lifeblood to those businesses that need it. THE U.S. SMALL BUSINESS COUNCIL… is the tip of the spear for small business advocacy in the United States. I feel very blessed to be involved and lead this group and hopefully make a difference and improve the small business environment anywhere in the country. It’s such an uphill battle to stay in business the first year, the first five years, the first 10 years. We just need to make the environment more conducive for small businesses to continue to grow and flourish in this country.
