the circle of football life I was 29 years old when Nicole and I first moved to Southlake in 2004. Our real estate agent insisted we drive by the stadium — as skipping it would have rendered our tour of Southlake incomplete. Riley Dodge was in high school then. With years of experience roaming the sidelines as the coach’s kid, he had the talent, smarts and resolve to bring home the 2006 state championship and national recognition as player of the year. At the age of 18, Riley was a viral sensation before YouTube was really a sensation. You see, Riley was there for it all, not just the population explosion of the mid 2000s in Southlake, but the explosion of high school football in the national spectrum. The year of 2006 was also when mainstream television shows like “Friday Night Lights” and “Two-A-Days” on MTV took flight. A year later, in the earliest days of nationally televised high school matchups, ESPN showcased Riley as he quarterbacked the Dragons against Florida powerhouse Miami Northwestern. Now at 29, he’s the head coach at the one of the state’s premier football programs. Some will say he lacks experience, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. He’s already coached for big time programs like The University of Texas and Texas A&M. As an assistant coach for the Aggies in 2012, Riley’s own experience and character made him an obvious choice for the assignment to help keep Johnny Manziel on track for the Heisman. When you think about it, Riley may be the most experienced candidate, fresh faced from the era that exalted kid quarterbacks to the extreme. He’s personally experienced a lot of what it takes as a player at the highest levels of both high school and college football. This month we sit down with the husband and father of two as he comes full circle to share his experience with the next generation of Dragon Nation.

This is especially true for these five students in the Dragon Class of 2019. Every year, Southlake Style highlights five incoming seniors who exemplify Dragon excellence. JACQUELINE HALL DRAGON EVENT FOUNDER, EMERALD BELLE SOCIAL OFFICER ABOUT JACQUELINE: A member of student council, Green Jackets, Belles, Mu Alpha Theta and National Honor Society, Jacqueline Hall has a diverse group of friends and recognizes how challenging it is to get high school students all involved in the same thing. Out of a desire to unify both Carroll and Carroll Senior High School and serve the community, she decided to start The Dragon Event. Inspired by Texas A&M University’s The Big Event, Jacqueline formed a studentled service day that was held on April 7. “I really wanted to form an event that everyone could be included in,” she says. “To see something that we had been planning for months carried out in one day and affect so many lives was the most humbling and honoring experience.” The event was a success as 300 students spent the day serving organizations like Run4Elise, Miracle League, GRACE Donation Station, Metroport Meals on Wheels and many more. Jacqueline says she plans to make it an annual event and train underclassmen on how to host the event so that it can continue after she graduates.

CUTTER SIPPEL PITCHER ABOUT CUTTER: Despite being benched with an injury last season, Cutter Sippel’s all time favorite baseball memory is from the recent 6A UIL State Championship game. “Winning state is definitely my best memory so far,” he says. “All the dog piles and just the excitement. And now coming home and seeing how happy everyone is for us. It’s kind of crazy.” Rested and recovered, the Dragon pitcher has a promising year ahead of him. In 2017, he threw a 10-strikeout shutout against Arlington Martin, resulting in the Dragon’s advancement to the state tournament for the first time since 2008. Heralded by local news outlets as one of the Dragon Baseball’s best players, Cutter’s talents quickly caught the eyes of recruiters. He has already committed to play at Texas Christian University upon graduating. And Cutter’s strengths extend far beyond his pitching arm. He is a member of National Honor Society and Young Men’s Service League (YMSL), a nonprofit organization that encourages young men and their mothers to engage in serving their community together. Between academic and athletic successes, expect great things from Cutter.

DEVAN DELUGO INCOMING VICE PRESIDENT OF CARROLL THEATRE ABOUT DEVAN: In the summer of 2011, Devan DeLugo hesitantly auditioned for the part of young Éponine in a local production of “Les Miserables.” She didn’t know it then, but this would be the beginning of a passion for musical theater. Seven years later, she is approaching her senior year and will serve as vice president of Carroll Theatre. “In Carroll Theatre, I hope I serve as a mentor because many of the younger students come in not knowing what they want to do with theater,” Devan says. “I was lucky I found my dream early, and I realized I wanted to be a part of musical theater very early on.” To say she had a successful junior year would be a gross understatement. Last school year, Devan’s role in “Gypsy” earned her multiple award nominations, including Best Featured Actress by Dallas Summer Musical’s High School Musical Theatre Awards. Devan is also an active member of National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Crew and Choir. She plans to major in musical theater and has 23 college auditions lined up.

MITCHELL GRUENEWALD ROBOTICS TEAM BUILDER ABOUT MITCHELL: When it comes to robotics, the Dragons don’t mess around. Last school year, a Carroll Robotic team brought home the VEX Robotics World Championships title. Typically, teams sent to worlds are seniors from the Robotics 2 class. Mitchell Gruenewald was a junior in Robotics 1 at the time, but watch out for him this year. “Robotics [1] was a really fun class,” he says. “After a few weeks of learning, you just build an entire robot for the rest of the year and try to improve it.” STEM is definitely his specialty. Gruenewald is co-founder and vice president of Carroll’s FPV Drone Racing Club. In his Practicum in STEM class, he and his classmates built a rocket that went through a series of inspections and was launched outside of Houston. On top of perpetually building hightech projects, Gruenewald is vice president of Young Men’s Service League (YMSL), team leader of Children’s Liturgy of the Word at Good Shepherd Catholic Community, a student council senator, a Green Jacket and a standout varsity lacrosse starter. He plans to play D1 lacrosse in college and major in aerospace engineering.

AUBREY PARR INCOMING CHOIR PRESIDENT ABOUT AUBREY: The 2018-2019 school year already looks bright for Aubrey Parr. She has been deeply involved with Carroll Choir for her entire high school career. For the past two years, she has been a part of varsity choir and was recently named All-District Treble. Last spring, Aubrey was thrilled to travel abroad with her choir and sing at various churches around London, such as St. Matthias Church – a parish that is over 165 years old. She is excited to serve as choir president this year. “I wanted to become president because I remember how it felt to be new to choir,” Aubrey explains. “It is so helpful to have someone that can guide you and make you feel like you’re part of a family. That’s what my officers did for me and I’m so excited to do the same.” And while she lives and breathes chorale, Aubrey has a wide swath of other activities. She is the incoming student council treasurer, a Green Jacket, actively involved in Carroll Theatre and member of Crew. Upon graduating, Aubrey plans to major in nursing with the goal of becoming a nurse practitioner.

SOUTHLAKE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ANNOUNCES 2018 COMMUNITY AWARD WINNERS AT ‘BOLLYWOOD NIGHTS’ BANQUET The Southlake Chamber of Commerce held their 2018 Awards Banquet in June, which included performances from NruthyaShakti Dance Academy, drummer Harshad Kanetkar and comedian Paul Varghese. The evening was full of bright colors and festive attire thanks to the “Bollywood Nights” theme. After trying out some Bollywood dance moves and getting henna designs on their hands, guests made their way into the award ceremony to hear who walked away with community MVP awards. Mayor Laura Hill received the Citizen of the Year. Julie Walter was awarded the Chairman’s Award. Mimi Tran walked away with the President’s Award. House of Shine was named the Civic Group of the Year. Ryan Peabody won Director of the Year. TD Ameritrade was named the Corporate Business of the Year. Barrows Law Firm was awarded Small Business of the Year. Bill Tait was recognized as the Ambassador of the Year. MaryLee Alford was named the Volunteer of the Year. And Amanda Higginbotham was named the Youth of the Year. LOCALS COME TOGETHER TO REMEMBER PHIL MERRELL BARBER Locals came together to honor Phil Merrell Barber after he passed on July 11 at the age of 83. After moving to Southlake in 1978 with his wife, Phil quickly devoted his time to the school district by volunteering at Carroll Senior High School. He did everything from sell football tickets to help with football chains at JV games to coach the 7-on-7 teams throughout the years. He was elected to the Carroll Athletic Hall of 2011 for his dedication.

LOCAL POLICE DEPARTMENTS PARTAKE IN LIP SYNC CHALLENGE What started with a few tweets has turned into an Internet sensation: Several local police departments across the country made their videos for a viral lip sync challenge. You may have relived “Flashdance” favorites with Grapevine DPS or laughed at Flower Mound’s confidence-boosting rendition of “Me Too,” but we got an extra kick out of the video Southlake PD dropped last month. They flipped the script by asking the participating officers to really sing along to their selections. And as soon as the beat dropped or the refrain picked up, the produced video dropped the professional track and left the officers singing their hearts out without music. While all of the officers knew about this switch before the video was released, it was still fun to watch these officers belt out their song of choice. And it got the job done. It has since been shared more than two million times on social media.

CARROLL ISD MAKES THE NEW WHEELS ON THE BUS GO ROUND AND ROUND Carroll ISD showed off their new school buses last month, which were purchased as part of the 2017 Bond Program. They are equipped with new seat belts, making them compliant with Texas’ new safety legislation. The Bond Builders, who loaded up on the buses while sporting their green hardhats, were the first to try out the new CISD vehicles on July 9. The district plans to continue rolling in these buses over the next five years.

MISS SOUTHLAKE EARNS SECOND RUNNER UP AT 2018 MISS TEXAS COMPETITION Our 2018 Miss Southlake, EmmaKate Few, represented our city during this year’s Miss Texas competition at the Eisemann Center in Richardson. And during the final round of competition on June 30, she was named second runner up. She was also awarded the Alpha Lifestyle & Fitness award during the preliminary rounds. She took the stage to strut her stuff in the swimsuit competition, talked about her platform – Walk the Talk – during the on stage question round, wowed the crowd during the evening wear competition and caught everyone’s attention during the talent portion when she performed contemporary clogging. EmmaKate was joined by four other North Dallas contestants in the top five: Miss Frisco took fourth runner up, Miss Richardson third runner up, Miss Park Cities first runner up and Miss Dallas, Madison Fuller, was crowned Miss Texas 2018.

SOUTHLAKE WORKS TO CONTROL FERAL HOG POPULATION As construction continues and new development plans play out, city officials are working to maintain the feral hog population in north Southlake. In the more wooded areas and sprawling pastures, feral hogs roam free and are known for multiplying rapidly. They also are known to carry harsh diseases that can be transmitted to both domestic stock and humans. So Southlake Police Department is using a hog trap in Bob Jones Nature Center as part of their Hog Abatement Program. They plan to capture these animals, humanely euthanize them and remove them from the city. As they continue to pursue this work, they ask citizens to avoid these traps and surrounding areas to ensure the program can continue to be successful.

RYAN O’REILLY JOINS THE DETROIT RED WINGS AFTER 2018 NHL DRAFT The Detroit Red Wings drafted former Southlake Carroll Dragon during this year’s NHL Draft. He was selected 98th overall. Ryan attended Carroll High School up to his junior year when he was drafted by the USHL Madison Capitols and moved to Madison, Wisconsin to play. This was the first time the NHL Draft weekend was held in Dallas. SOUTHLAKE CARROLL EARNS SECOND PLACE IN UIL LONE STAR CUP COMPETITION The University Interscholastic League (UIL), the governing body over Texas High School athletic and academic competitions, created the Lone Star Cup in 1997. Since then, Southlake has been no stranger to bringing the award home. The UIL Lone Star Cup is awarded annually to six high schools, one in each of the six UIL classifications (1A through 6A), based on team performances in district and state championships. This includes State and Area Marching Band, Tennis, Team Tennis, Cross Country, Volleyball, Football, Swimming & Diving, Wrestling, Girls and Boys Basketball, Soccer, Golf, Track & Field, Academics, One Act Play, Softball and Baseball performances. Although Southlake came up shy of winning – Conroe The Woodlands took it home this year – the accomplished high school already has a shelf full of the prestigious cups. The Dragons won their first Cup in 4A competition during 20002001 school year and earned another in the same category the following year. The Dragons returned to the scene again in 2011-2012, this time as 5A, and continued to win the cup for the next three school years.

FOUR LOCAL GIRL SCOUTS RECEIVE THEIR GOLD AWARDS Four Southlake residents received Girl Scout’s highest honor, the Gold Award, because of their efforts to improve their community. Shawn Carter, a member of Troop 4017, volunteered with the Carroll Senior High School theater department to help organize and inventory their storage. Nicole Fenley, also a member of Troop 4017, worked with Christ’s Haven and created a communal dining table so they could foster a feeling of family for their members and also held a food drive to stock the food pantry. Eleanor LoFrisco, a Juliette Girl Scout (a Girl Scout who participates as an individually registered member), organized a Dr. Seuss Day for Primary Years Program at Westlake Academy to get young students excited about reading and writing. Jacqueline Petescia, also a Juliette Girl Scout, wrote a book, “Friends Don’t Count Chromosomes,” and made a accompanying school program to teach elementary students to include others and how to talk to new people. THE CITY OF SOUTHLAKE RECEIVES RECOGNITION AT THE 2018 TAMIO CONFERENCE In June, the city received state honors at the Texas Association of Municipal Information Officers (TAMIO) annual conference. The Southlake DPS’s “Bench on the Grinch” video was honored in the 2018 Video – PSA – Marketing Under 60K category. And the Library’s “Camp Big Read” program received the Award of Honor for Best Recurring Special Event Under 100K.

TO HOST GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION THIS MONTH The Texas Rangers, The Cordish Companies and the City of Arlington have announced a grand opening celebration for the highly anticipated Texas Live! From August 9 to August 12, locals can come out to enjoy the 200,000 square feet, $250 million dining, entertainment and hospitality district in Arlington. On Thursday, August 9, the new location will host a grand opening VIP party – by invitation only. Then, they will open Arlington Backyard and Lockhart Smokehouse to the public at 7 p.m. Guests can stick around for a free concert featuring Toadies with Eleven Hundred Springs at Arlington Backyard at 8 p.m. Also at 8 p.m., Live! Arena, PBR Texas, Troy’s, Sports & Social Arlington and Guy Fieri’s taco joint will open. That Friday, the district will host the first of many Texas Rangers away game watch parties at 6:05 p.m. At 8 p.m., Bleachers with special guests Joywave will take the stage at Arlington Live. On Saturday, after another away game watch party at 12:05 p.m., Kip Moore will take the stage at Arlington Backyard. Come out on Sunday for the district’s free family fun day. PARK PLACE BRINGS PORSCHE TO GRAPEVINE Park Place’s fourth dealership in Grapevine, Park Place Porsche, opened its doors last month. DELUCCA SET TO OPEN ITS SECOND LOCATION IN DALLAS Delucca Gaucho Pizza will be dishing out a lot more pizzas this fall as it opens its second DFW location. LOCAL REAL ESTATE INVESTOR JOINS CARROLL ISD SCHOOL BOARD

n what ended up being one of the most congenial school board races between three Aggies, Matt Bryant emerged the new Place 4 trustee for the Carroll ISD. Longtime Southlake residents, Bryant and his wife have three kids in Carroll schools. All three kids are actively involved in sports, and Bryant enjoys sharing in all the Dragon revelries that accompany them. He recently made the transition from working in the corporate engineering field to real estate investing and loves what he does. I CHOSE TO RUN FOR THE CISD BOARD OF TRUSTEES BECAUSE… I believe in giving back to the community. My family and I have loved living in Southlake for the last 13 years. Lisa and I decided over a decade ago that this is where we wanted to raise our family. I wanted to utilize my strengths and skillset to benefit our students, teachers, administration and community. MY NO. 1 GOAL… as I serve in Place 4 is to be a man of action who represents our community. I want to ensure that safety on our campuses is a top priority along with continuous improvement of our processes. ONE CHANGE I WOULD LIKE TO SEE IS… the traffic snarl reduced on White Chapel in front of the High School! Hopefully the street-widening project that is underway will be complete in the very near future. MY FAVORITE DRAGON TRADITION… is the sense of family and community pride around being a Dragon. Our students are good about supporting excellence across academics and ALL extra curricular activities. WE HAVE LIVED IN SOUTHLAKE… for 13 years, and my favorite thing about living here are the solid friendships we have made through being involved in the community. These friendships began when we enrolled Madeline at WCUMC pre-school and we feel we have continued to develop great friendships every step of the way. The spirit of volunteering to help our schools is strong in Southlake. Lisa and I encourage all parents get involved with serving our community - there is a spot for everyone to help. MY FAMILY… means the world to me. Lisa and I have been married for 20 years. Our daughter, Madeline (pictured left), will be a senior this year and has verbally committed to play soccer at Baylor. She is one of the Carroll Soccer team captains, plays club soccer for Solar ECNL and is a Green Jacket. Our son, Matthew, is 14 and a freshman at the high school. He is in the CMA curriculum. His extracurricular activities include football, basketball, lacrosse and he runs track. Robert is 13 and in the

8th grade. He plays lacrosse, golf and loves fishing and hunting. Our family values are founded upon our Christian beliefs and faith. We are certainly not perfect people, but we find peace in daily striving to be aligned with our risen savior, Jesus Christ. PARENTING THREE TEENAGERS… isn’t for the weak-hearted. We try to have an open line of communication with our children and they are certainly our favorite topics for discussion. We are attempting to model and instill good values and skills that they can use every day in the real world. We have open and honest discussions with them and are determined to teach them to be kind to others and to respect others. I OWN AND OPERATE… NET Keller Real Estate, LLC and NET NRH Real Estate, LLC. Over the past decade, I have specialized in transforming distressed single-family homes into productive rental properties. Prior to my real estate career, I was a Vice President of Sales for the U.S. subsidiary of Nova Measuring Instruments, Inc. I also worked as a Process Engineer for Texas Instruments in the Jack Kilby Research Center in Richardson. TRANSITIONING FROM THE ENGINEERING FIELD TO REAL ESTATE... was a dream that came true. I had a successful career in corporate America, but I am passionate about being a small business owner and running my own business. My passion has always been real estate. When Lisa and I were first married we bought, fixed up and sold homes in the Lakewood area. This background and experience led me to draw up a plan to start acquiring distressed homes with the goal of building a rental portfolio. I absolutely love what I do and I am thrilled that I am able to provide for my family with the business that we have built. PRECISION ORTHOPEDICS New Home, New Brand, Same Great Care

fter more than two decades of providing quality orthopedic care in Irving, Precision Orthopedics & Sports Medicine – formerly Irving Orthopedics & Sports Medicine – is opening a second office in Southlake. “Most of our doctors live in Southlake and have for years,” says Dr. Robert Bayless, president and founder of the practice. “We love the city and want to be an integral part of the community.” Slated to open in September, the Southlake office – conveniently located on the corner of State Highway 114 and White Chapel Boulevard – will offer all of the same specialty care that patients at the Irving practice have grown accustomed to. The talented team includes: Dr. Steven Sanders – Fellowship-trained and an expert in joint replacement surgeries for the knee, hip and shoulder, Dr. Sanders is also a published author, including “The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.” He has been honored in “Who’s Who” and has been granted the Gerhard Kuntscher top orthopedic award. or football coaches and their families, moving from place to place is just the nature of the job. It happens from the high school to college to professional level. Nowhere is this more true than in North Texas, where communities are known to wrap their identities around high school football programs. But this nomadic lifestyle can create quite the puzzle when coaches aim for their dream jobs. For Riley Dodge, it seems like all of his puzzle pieces fell into place as he accepted the head coach position of the Southlake Carroll Dragon Football team. The high-profile coaching job had eyes from across the state on it. And for good reason. The Dragons hold the Texas record for number of state championship titles with eight trophies in the case. Given the nature of Southlake’s tight-knit community and the resignation of former coach Hal Wasson – who is now Irving ISD’s executive director of athletics – the transition

could have created major rifts. Enter: Riley, the former statetitle winning Dragon quarterback and son of former head coach Todd Dodge. In 2006, the same year he won state, he was named national high school player of the year. He set the then record with more than 8,000 yards and 101 touchdowns passing and over 3,000 yards rushing for the Dragons. “Honestly, when it came up, this has always been a dream of mine,” Riley says. “When you have a job like this, you never know when it is going to open up. Coach Wasson did an amazing job for a long, long time. He is a dear friend and actually coached me when I was in high school.”

Sure, they were friends, but it wasn’t until their junior year of college that the two reconnected. He was at McNeese State University and she was at Texas A&M University when he texted her. “We just started talking on the phone and he came to College Station and took me on a date, and that was it,” Alexis recalls. The couple got married in 2013 and moved to Austin while Riley worked at The University of Texas as a quality control quarterbacks coach. By that time, Alexis had earned a master’s degree in accounting from A&M. That was a way of life for him. But, I am very much the opposite. I don’t like change and I’m a type-A planner and want to know where we’re going to be. Knowing we’ll be here at home is awesome.” They may have lived right around the corner this whole time, but for the new coach and his family, they’re now truly home. And just in time for the couple’s 10-year class reunion this fall.

As Riley states, dream jobs don’t open up often. His wife, Alexis, was well aware of what this opportunity meant for him, so she backed him wholeheartedly – all while nurturing their brand-new baby. Their second son was only one week old when his father applied to become the new Dragon coach. “When he decided to apply, I was so proud of him for taking the leap of faith to go after his dream job,” Alexis says. “Over the past few years, God has closed several doors, and when Riley got the job, it has never been so clear that this was the door He was waiting to open.” In towns like Southlake, being the football coach’s wife can be a job in itself. “He should have trademarked it,” Riley jokes of his father. All jokes aside, Riley’s love for Southlake tradition turned out to be a big factor in him getting the job. This wasn’t some stranger to the district swooping in to take a highly coveted job. This was someone who had lived and breathed Dragon Football. “I grew up in this field house,” Riley says. “I lifted weights in the same weight room they are. I can really relate to these kids and expectations of this place. I think trying to create a sense of swagger and confidence in these guys. I want them to have high expectations and a sense of urgency.”

B U I L D I N G H I S O W N N A R R AT I V E Two major facts were highlighted when Riley came on the scene, one being that he is 29. “I think it’s funny, because if I was 30 – which I will be in a couple months – I don’t think they would be talking about it,” Riley says. “For me, it’s not an issue. I’ve been around the game my entire life. I tell people that I’ve been around high school football programs for 29 years.” And of course, once he was hired, you wouldn’t hear the name Riley Dodge without reference to his dad. The elder Coach Dodge, now coaching at Westlake High School in Austin, led the Dragons to four state titles titles between 2002 and 2006. During that span, he posted a win record of 79-1 and 98-11 overall. Attempting to fill his father’s shoes could be quite a burden, but Riley has his own set of goals. “We have three goals: Being district champs, practicing on Thanksgiving and winning state,” Riley says. These may seem like lofty goals, but when Riley lists them – counting them out with his fingers – it’s easy to get on board. In part, because when speaking with Riley, it’s plain to see he knows his stuff. He is constantly going to coaching clinics, reading and has an impressive network of coaches always ready if he needs advice. But Riley is quick to remind people there is far more than one coach of a football team. “I believe we have the best staff in the state of Texas,” he says. “I really lean on those guys. I’m not someone who says ‘I know it all,’ because I don’t. I’m not doing it on my own. We have a lot of great coaches here.”

Bowers is coming off a debut junior season starting under center in which he completed 68 percent of his passes for 2,490 yards and 30 touchdowns against nine interceptions while also rushing for 856 yards (5.9 per carry) and eight scores. “Will doesn’t have a ton of college offers yet, which is just crazy to me,” Riley says. “He has a good arm, and he brings a ton with his ability to operate an offense and with his intangibles. I’m so excited to get to work with him for his senior year.” McDaniel, meanwhile, was also in his first season starting for the Dragons after transferring from Coppell and posted 1,854 yards (7.8 per carry) with 23 touchdowns. He will benefit from a line that not only has the three aforementioned incumbents but also new potential starters that caught Dodge’s eyes this spring and summer in guards Addison Penn and Brandon Borrasso. The biggest questions on offense come outside, where Carroll must replace first-team receivers Cade Bell and Hudson Schrum. But standout defensive back RJ Mickens (297 yards and nine touchdowns on just 14 receptions) should still chip in at receiver some, and the Dragons have long shown the ability to replenish the cupboard with elite pass-catching options. “I don’t want to mention any names there because I don’t know who exactly is going to emerge, but we definitely have some great options and the group did really well this spring and in 7-on-7 this summer,” Riley says. “I love our options. We just have to get them more experienced and get a little more depth.” Defensively, key returners for Carroll include all-district linebackers Michael Parrish (first team) and Graham Faloona (second team), safeties Mickens (first team) and Jake Fex (second team) and defensive linemen Quentin Bunten and Alex Kingston. “Quentin and Alex will hold things down up front,” Riley says. “Michael and Graham will lead our linebackers and then of course it’s always nice when you have a guy like RJ back there to anchor the secondary.” Mickens was a first-team selection as a sophomore and a five-star recruit ranked among the top five players in the state for his class at any position according to 247Sports. com with offers already extended from powers Alabama and Clemson among many, many others. “We have quite a few others that we’re really excited about,” Riley says. “We just need to get them more experience under the lights on Fridays.” A non-district schedule featuring South Grand Prairie, Colleyville Heritage and Odessa Permian should accelerate the learning curve for Carroll’s newcomers in advance of a 5-6A slate against the likes of Keller ISD, Trophy Club Byron Nelson, Denton Guyer and Northwest Eaton. And if Carroll’s spring and summer are any indicator, the Dragons should be right on track come the postseason. “Spring ball went great,” Riley says. “We got a lot of teaching and the install of our offense and defense in. There were certainly and will be more growing pains, but you can tell how smart the kids and how much they are picking it up. They’re very coachable and I couldn’t be more pleased with what we saw.”

KIDS MATTER INTERNATIONAL Helping Close to Home as well as Internationally

ver wonder what you can do to make a difference in the lives of local children? Kids Matter International is a nonprofit charity based in Southlake since 2006 that has been passionately dedicated to helping children who are living in poverty. The organization serves children in North Tarrant County and other areas throughout Texas, in addition to a Christian school in Tanzania. Kids Matter boasts two core programs: Around the Block clothing program and Ramp Up Reading. Kids Matter Around the Block clothing program gives low income children new clothing, shoes, backpacks and books. School guidance counselors, domestic violence organizations, agencies serving low income families and churches refer school age children to the program. Kids Matter takes the children to Kohl’s where they are gifted a $100 voucher to spend on clothing. Additionally, children receive new shoes, backpacks and books. Kids Matter clothed more than 1,400 children in 2017 through three separate events in the Southlake, Arlington and Austin areas with the help of the more than 830 volunteers. In 2018, the Around the Block program aims to clothe 2,000 children by raising $200,000 by November when the events are held to clothe the kids for the winter months. Kids Matter Ramp Up Reading program aims to provide underprivileged children with the gift of learning, which begins with reading. Literacy rates among low income children are strikingly low. Only 20 percent of third grade children living in poverty can read at a proficient level. The Ramp Up Reading program is committed to changing this statistic by annually providing 20,000 age appropriate books to children in Title I elementary schools across 11 states. This mass distribution and reading events are achieved in conjunction with Kids Matter longtime partner, Kohl’s, in addition to several other local venues and events. “We all have the gift of time, talent and resources,” says Marti Conner, president of Kids

TAKING ON THE SPORT Growing up in South Bend, Indiana, Skylar was involved in a wide variety of sports – volleyball, softball and soccer to name a few – yet she gravitated toward basketball at an early age. After she started following her dad to the local recreation center where he coached and officiated different teams, she was hooked to the rush of the game. She quickly picked up the ball and started playing with other local kids. Often her opponents were older boys, but she didn’t let that keep her away from the game. As an individual, Skylar finished her career as Notre Dame’s all-time leading scorer with 2,357 points and ranks either first or second in most major statistics. To cap off her career, she was named a four-time collegiate All-American. “We really did it our own. We built our own success. It really wasn’t something that we just inherited; we challenged each other. That’s really where our success came from was making each other better,” Skylar says. “It was a great experience for me especially with all that being in my hometown.” After such a college record, it was no surprise the Notre Dame team captain’s name was thrown around during the 2013 WNBA Draft. When the big day came,

Skylar was the third overall draft pick and packed her bags for Oklahoma to join the Tulsa Shock. She gained national acclaim even in her first season by being named to the 2013 All-Rookie Team. But she went on to prove herself the year after by being named as the league’s Most Improved Player and a 2014 All-WNBA First Team honoree.

OVERCOMING OBSTACLES But as the 2015 season was winding down, Skylar’s momentum waned. In a game against the Seattle Storm with 44 seconds left on the clock, Skylar fell to the ground with what she believed to be a knee injury. Soon after, she was told she tore her right ACL and would be out for the rest of the season. This painful injury has crippled the careers of athletes from all sports, but Skylar would not let it keep her down. She knew it would take hard work and determination to continue playing on that level, so she stepped up and started fighting to get back on the court. “Nobody could go to physical therapy for me. I had to do it,” Skylar explains. “It gave me resilience and helped me be self-motivated.” And when she felt like it was too much, Skylar depended on her community to keep her going. “I had a community of women who had been through it, so I had that to lean on,” Skylar says. “And, I had a community of young women who were going through it, so they were looking to me for questions and for advice.” Through it all, Skylar had her college sweetheart by her side. Daniel Smith, a wide receiver for the Fighting Irish, and Skylar started dating back in school. The Notre Dame sports power couple got engaged in 2016 and have been supporting each other’s careers ever since. While she was working to get back at it, Skylar gained a new appreciation for the game. She watched her team on the sidelines, which helped her gain a new perspective and come back stronger than ever. It wasn’t enough for her to come back and focus on her own game. She acted as a voice for the gender pay inequality in professional basketball. As one of the biggest names of the league, Skylar knew it was her responsibility to bring the issue into the limelight. “Basketball is just basketball. There are so many talented women who put in as much, if not more, time and effort into the game with half the platform,” Skylar says. “We have a long way to go in our sport and in our gender disparity. So, I’m just trying to be a voice of that as one of the faces of the league and talk about how important it is and just try to help out our sport.”

SETTING THE EXAMPLE Because of the time Skylar spends dedicated to others, both in speaking out and her expansive philanthropic work, she’s often referred to as a role model for young women. She’s even used her own experiences to write “The Middle School Rules of Skylar Diggins,” to show other young women they are not alone in their daily trials and struggles. In it, she shares stories about growing up in a diverse, middle-class family, dealing with bullying, struggling to fit in and overcoming obstacles through it all. “For me, I just want to empower young women and young girls and people whether that be about self confidence, body image or just leading a healthy lifestyle,” Skylar says. Skylar uses the book to share tales featuring some of her “favorite people.” And she hopes to use it to share her childhood with her future children. With her husband illustrating SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

the book, it really became a family project the young couple was proud to produce together. Both book and basketball fans alike know Skylar tells it like it is, and she proves you don’t have to be anyone other than yourself to succeed. “I always let my passion, my emotion, for the game speak for itself,” Skylar says. “I think that’s part of it: being yourself, being okay with who you are in this league and in life period.”

DOING DALLAS Since the Tulsa Shock moved down south and became the Dallas Wings in 2015 - and became the first Dallas WNBA team to play in town since the Dallas Diamonds in the early ’80s, Skylar has continued to act as a leader. The Wings captain finished 2016 averaging 13.1 points per game and expanded on that in 2017 to pace the team at 18.5 points a game. She also led in assists, blocks, free throw percentage and minutes played in each game. Skylar spent last season breaking career records in defensive rebounds, total rebounds and blocks and made her 2,000th career point last August. She finished the 2017 season by being named to her third All-Star Game as a reserve in July and was named to the All-WNBA First team. In 2018, she hopes to take her team to postseason success and continue to build hype and awareness around the program. “She’s like another coach on the floor. She’s a great quarterback… She thinks well and really presents herself well on and off the basketball court,” Dallas Wings head coach Fred Williams says. “Her skills show when she plays in games. The number one thing for her is that she has a lot of respect within herself and fears no one.” Off the court, Skylar and her husband have made this city their home. Skylar always knew the DFW area was big on sports, being a top five TV market, but she has come to see just how much locals love their teams, both professional and amateur. “We love the area. It’s obviously a huge sports town. By the time kids can walk, [Dallas parents] have them playing football, track, you know, everything,” Skylar says. “It really is our home.” If you want to catch the Diggins-Smith power couple around town, they are often out at the area’s local restaurants. By dining at different spots around town, from Uptown to Toyota Music Factory, Skylar has found there are “different strokes for different folks.” “My misconception of Dallas was that you have to be downtown, like the downtown, all the time like you do in other big cities. But there are like 10 downtowns here,” Skylar says. “It’s really more spread out than I thought it was. The idea of everything being bigger in Texas is true.” There’s one place you can for sure see Skylar when she’s in town: College Park Center in Arlington. Industrial Chic Whiskey Cake Opens a Secondary DFW Location in Irving Slap on a pair of suspenders and black rim glasses and pull up a chair at the latest trendy addition to our area’s food scene: Whiskey Cake. The popular Plano restaurant opened its sixth restaurant and second DFW spot this June right on Interstate 635, and it’s already wowing locals with its luxurious patio, industrial-chic atmosphere and locally sourced dishes. Whiskey Cake started out with a mission to bring unique dining experiences to the suburbs that craved a high-quality restaurant. And they are continuing to do just that for Las Colinas locals looking for a new American tavern-inspired, farmto-table menu served up in a quirky environment. Port Isabel Lighthouse Starting right at home, Port Isabel Lighthouse, stretching 72 feet tall, is the only open lighthouse along the Texas coast. The structure was built in 1852, and it gives locals and travelers alike a beautiful view of South Padre Island. Guests do have to clamber up the 75 winding stairs to reach the observation deck – including three short ladders – but the climb is definitely worth it once you look out on the scene. Boston Light The first lighthouse in what would become the United States was built in 1716 in Massachusetts. Located on the Boston Harbor Islands, this structure became an instrumental location during the American Revolutionary War. While the British blew up the original structure in June 1776 and the new lighthouse would not be rebuilt until 1783, guests can still enjoy the beautiful 85-foot National Historic Landmark that sits on Little Brewster Island in the outer Boston Harbor. Backstreet’s Back Rediscover the Boy Band that Shaped our Childhoods

he ’90s called…but they can’t have the Backstreet Boys back, alright? With new music, fresh dance moves and several live concerts lined up this year, BSB is just as romantic and talented as they were 25 years ago — and our inner-preteen-girl couldn’t be happier. Although the boy band (made up of Nick Carter, Kevin Richardson, AJ McLean, Brian Littrell and Howie Dorough) first rose to fame before the new millennium, they are still beloved today. Last year, the boys were featured on Florida Georgia Line’s “God, Your Mama and Me,” performed at CMT: Crossroads and the 52nd Academy of Country Music Awards, and they began a Las Vegas residency at Planet Hollywood. In May 2018, they released their first single in five years called “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” which went No. 1 on iTunes in multiple countries and reached five million YouTube views in just 48 hours.

Formed in 1993, The Backstreet Boys were known for its cute guys and catchy pop songs — oh yeah, and perfectly choreographed movements! The group is one of the best-selling boy bands of all time, with more than 130 million albums sold around the world, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, eight studio albums and 28 singles released, and an album, “Millennium,” that became the best-selling album of 1999. When adult women take their friends and daughters to the show, they will be treated to everything they have loved about the Backstreet Boys since they were kids — familiar hits like “I Want it That Way,” “As Long as You Love Me” and “Larger Than Life,” perfectly styled hair and an irresistible charm. A+ in Rock ’n’ Roll! Learn About Music and Life in this Fun Musical

chool is back in session — and ready to rock your world! No need for pencils, notebooks or calculators; at the “School of Rock,” you just need an instrument, wild hair and a passion for having a good time. The story is about Dewey Finn, an enthusiastic-yet-unsuccessful guitar player who wants to make easy money. After getting a job at a prestigious prep school as a substitute music teacher, Finn has the kids trade clarinets for guitars and teaches the straight-A middle-schoolers the art of loud, wild and beautiful rock ’n’ roll. Follow along as the students practice to compete in the upcoming Battle of the Bands, while learning life lessons that inevitably come from being in a rock band. “School of Rock” is based on the 2003 film of the same name starring Jack Black, who said, “I laughed. I cried. I rocked!” after he saw the musical. It has 14 new songs written by Andrew Lloyd Weber (“The Phantom of the Opera”), with lyrics by Glenn Slater and a book by Julian Fellowes. Fans will love that the musical also has all the original songs — including “It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll),” “Edge of Seventeen” and “School of Rock” — plus new twists, new jokes and even more fun than the movie. This show is also part of history as it is the first time in musical theater record to feature an all-kids rock band that plays instruments live on stage. Expect plenty of plaid outfits, guitar riffs and hilarious jokes that are great for the whole family.
