August might be the most bittersweet month of the year. It signals the end of summer, but it also ushers in the start of a new school year. And there’s something so invigorating and exciting about new beginnings. One of the best parts of going back to school is no doubt reconnecting with friends and classmates—and seeing how much everyone changed over the summer. I remember starting eighth grade and suddenly towering over many of the boys my age. I also recall the butterflies before the first day at my 3,000-student high school. Heading back to class, it seems, evokes a sense of anticipation and trepidation. Whatever blend of back-to-school feelings your Dragons might be experiencing, Carroll counselor Nicole Stolle offers some useful insight in “Five Minutes With.” I love her idea of including a positive note in your child’s lunchbox or folder. She also encourages kindness, which is perfectly put in play by the Buddy Bench. On page 14, see how a Rockenbaugh Elementary kindergarten class ensured that their fellow Dragons could always find a pal on the playground. Their playground days are behind them, but what’s ahead for our “Five Ones to Watch” is assuredly promising. This year’s group of standout seniors is comprised of musicians, dancers, artists and actors, and they demonstrate Dragon Pride in everything they do. Whatever stage of school your kids might be in, embrace all the excitement that comes this month. There’s so much to look forward to.

THE GLASS CASTLE IN THEATERS AUGUST 11

Glass Half-Full “The Glass Castle” is a long-awaited Lionsgate film based on Jeannette Walls’ best-selling memoir about her impoverished father’s dream to one day build his children a home. The movie opens with Walls’ dysfunctional and radically nonconformist parents (Naomi Watts, Woody Harrelson, Academy Award nominees) having moved to New York to be near her; Academy Award-winner Brie Larson plays Walls as an adult. Her free-spirited, alcoholic father and eccentric, artistic mother mean well, but their descent into her new life was not part of her well-orchestrated—if not obsessively sterile—plan to distance herself from the chaos of her nomadic childhood. Max Greenfield (“New Girl”) plays Walls’ husband, David.

ROCKENBAUGH BUDDY BENCH HELPS DRAGONS SPREAD KINDNESS

HEY BUDDY!

R

ockenbaugh Elementary School (RES) kids looking for a friend at recess know just where to go: the Buddy Bench. Since spring 2016, a wooden bench near the playground has been a place for new friendships to blossom. The idea is simple: If kids ever find themselves in need of a pal on the playground, they sit on the Buddy Bench. The concept of the Buddy Bench made national headlines just four years ago when Christian Bucks, a fifthgrader from York, Pennsylvania, introduced the bench at his elementary school. Since then, nearly 2,000 Buddy Benches have popped up on playgrounds around the United States and in about a dozen other countries, according to NBC News. Is the bench a way for kids to make a friend at recess—or is it more? Could it be the cure for playground loneliness? RES kindergarten teacher and 201516 Teacher of the Year, Cindy Ryon, thinks the Buddy Bench builds a positive school climate any way you look at it. She helped bring the bench to the RES campus after a conversation with her class sparked the idea. “We have a morning meeting where kids can talk about what they’re nervous or excited about,” Ryon says. “One friend said, ‘I don’t have anybody to play with.’” Ryon turned it into a lesson of how students could look out for their classmates, encouraging them to notice kids who might feel left out or sad. One of their class experiments was to smile at people and see if they smiled back. While a smile given most often resulted in a smile received, the exercise still didn’t solve the kindergartners’ big concern: Just because someone smiles doesn’t mean he or she is happy. HELLO THERE!

“IT BUILDS A SENSE OF COMMUNITY; IT’S A PLACE TO BE WITH A FRIEND.” — CINDY RYON

“After a few days of actively looking for people who were lonely, one boy said, ‘We need a place to meet!’ That’s when the idea for the Buddy Bench hit me,” Ryon recalls. Ryon was familiar with Bucks’ story and knew about DonorsChoose.org, a site dedicated to helping teachers fund materials and experiences for students. Through the site, her class could raise the nearly $1,000 needed to bring a bench to RES. Ryon’s students brainstormed a few initial fundraising ideas—tapping Mom and Dad for money or selling baked goods, for example—but Ryon knew DonorsChoose.org was the best way to bring the idea to life. After getting her proposal approved on the site, Ryon watched donations pour in from all over the country. Her students tracked donations on a “Dragonometer,” coloring in how much money was raised each day. After only three days, Ryon’s kindergarteners had reached their fundraising goal. SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

Ryon brought the fundraising full circle by having her class write thank-you notes to those who contributed. “The kids were so excited,” she recalls. “Each child handwrote four or five notes for a total of about 90 thank-you messages.” Through DonorsChoose.org, the kids selected the perfect bench for their playground—and they even followed Ryon’s design advice. “They all wanted to paint the bench green and black,” she says, “but it was such a gorgeous wood, I convinced them it was pretty as it was.” A welcoming inscription invites all Dragons to have a seat and find a friend. Ryon has seen kids of all ages—not just kindergartners—use the bench. And she made sure the class that brought the Buddy Bench to RES understood their role in continuing the tradition. “I told them their job isn’t over. Their responsibility is to teach each grade how to use the Buddy Bench,” says Ryon. AUG 17 • 17

WOULD YOU BE MY FRIEND?

LET’S BE FRIENDS

18 • AUG 17

For a kid with no one to play with, the playground can be a lonely place. While the purpose of the Buddy Bench is for children to make friends, some might argue that sitting on the bench singles out the lonely or excluded kids. Considering that a child is bullied every seven seconds, according to an estimate by the United States Department of Justice, could the Buddy Bench have a negative impact? Ryon doesn’t think so. “Kids look at it differently than adults,” she says. “They don’t think, ‘Oh, that person is lonely or sad.’ They think, ‘Oh, there’s a new friend!’” It helps, she adds, that this particular kindergarten class was highly empathetic. “They were very attuned to how other people felt,” says Ryon. “It made them sad to think that anyone didn’t have a friend to play with. They wanted everyone to have a friend.” Janet Blackwell, principal at RES, is proud that her campus is home to a Buddy Bench and says the impact goes much further than the playground. “It has been great at making kids aware of other children,” she says. “It makes them think about others; just because they have a friend doesn’t mean that everyone has a friend. I see this not just on the playground, but in the cafeteria and all around school.” The biggest challenge, says Ryon, has been getting kids to slow down and notice when someone is sitting on the bench. And for those youngsters perched on the bench, sometimes all it takes is a nudge to befriend someone new. “There would be times I’d see three or four kids sitting there,” she says. “I’d say, ‘Do y’all need a friend? How about each other?’” Other schools have inquired about how to bring the Buddy Bench to their campuses, and Ryon and Blackwell hope the movement continues throughout Dragon Nation and beyond. “It makes my heart happy to see kids using the bench,” says Ryon. “It builds a sense of community; it’s a place to be with a friend.” With friendship just a seat away, loneliness on the playground might be a thing of the past. “Adults should have [the Buddy Bench] in the workplace,” says Blackwell. “Kids are teaching us a lesson to stop and be aware of who’s lonely. We get so busy that we forget that some people just need a friend.”

RACHEL GITTER INCOMING CHOIR PRESIDENT Rachel Gitter has a heart for harmony. She has been singing for as long as she can remember, first performing with the San Antonio Children’s Choir and then going on to sing around the world. Her freshman year, Gitter sang with Carroll Choir at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. “It was an amazing opportunity and shows how universal music is,” she says. “I love many voices coming together in harmony. The sound resonates with beauty.” Rachel’s voice has earned her many accolades including a superior rating of 1 at the State Solo and Ensemble in Austin. She was also a member of the All-Region Treble Choir last year and advanced to the semifinals in the National Association of Teachers of Singing competition. As incoming choir president, Rachel is excited about the year ahead. “I love choir and feel fortunate to be part of something so special,” she says. WHAT OTHERS SAY: “Rachel is a very energetic, driven and talented singer. She brings great joy to all she meets and gives her absolute best every time she opens her mouth to sing,” says Paul Doucet, head choral director. “I know that with Rachel’s drive, talent, dedication and positive disposition, she will be highly successful at whatever she pursues in life.”

PAUL VENESKY INCOMING BAND COUNCIL PRESIDENT, SECTION LEADER, GREEN JACKETS Paul Venesky is a percussionist with many talents—he plays the tenor drums in marching band, drums in jazz band and the marimba for solo performances and contests. For concert band, he plays the timpani drums, snare drum and various auxiliary instruments such as the tambourine and, his personal favorite, the vibraslap, a funky-looking instrument consisting of a piece of stiff wire, a wooden ball and a hollow box with metal teeth inside. As a section leader and Band Council president, Paul is optimistic about the band’s direction. “I’m excited to see how much better and more competitive we become this year,” he says. “I’m also looking forward to jamming out in the bleachers at football games with all my friends.” Reflecting on his favorite Dragon moments, playing at Carnegie Hall with the Carroll Wind Symphony comes to mind. “Every musician would love to play there, but not everyone has the opportunity,” Paul says. “I’m incredibly grateful for having been able to perform there.” WHAT OTHERS SAY: “Paul is an outstanding and well-rounded percussionist in the Carroll Dragon Band. At an individual level, he has been successful both in the All-Region band and as a First-Division soloist at the Texas State Solo and Ensemble competition,” says Ken Johnson, marching band director. “The band staff anticipates great things from Paul during his senior year.”

MALINI CHANDRA INCOMING SECRETARY OF NATIONAL ART HONOR SOCIETY Malini Chandra has long had an eye for design. As a child, she loved drawing characters, decorating her room and helping her mom make floral arrangements. But it wasn’t until Malini took Drawing 2 her sophomore year that she seriously considered pursuing art and design as a career. “My biggest inspiration comes from other artists and designers,” she says. “The successful work of others pushes me to be better and allows me to see different points of view.” Malini’s main passion is graphic design, but she also enjoys other forms of art such as graphite drawing, watercolor, pastel and sewing. On her YouTube channel, Malini shares sewing tutorials and DIY videos with more than 14,000 subscribers. After high school, Malini has her sights set on the Big Apple. “I plan to go to an art school in New York City,” she says. “I love the opportunity and unrestricted feeling of NYC.” WHAT OTHERS SAY: “Malini is a dedicated student who is both authentic in her work and creative in her ideas,” says Eric Horn, art educator and artist. “Her dedication to quality resonates through her entire portfolio.”

ASHLEY GREENE INCOMING EMERALD BELLES CAPTAIN Ashley Greene can’t help but smile when she looks back at old videos of her younger self learning about dance. “It’s humorous to see how much dance has taught me,” she says. After five years of competitive gymnastics, Ashley discovered a passion for dance at age 11. Now, as incoming captain of the Emerald Belles, Ashley feels like one of her biggest dreams has been realized. “Being the incoming captain of such an incredible organization is an indescribable feeling,” she says. “I couldn’t be happier and more grateful.” For Ashley, the best part of being a Belle is making connections and friendships. “There are endless lessons and memories shared with people I spend hours rehearsing with,” she says. “That forms a stronger bond than anything else.” The Emerald Belle credits much of her success to her No. 1 role model: Her mom. “She is my rock and has always encouraged me to put myself out there and bring passion to everything I do,” Ashley says. WHAT OTHERS SAY: “Ashley has been exceptional as a Belle ever since her freshman year,” says Melissa Page, Emerald Belles director. “She will be an excellent Belle captain because of her work ethic, motivation and overall kindness to her teammates.”

MIRANDA CAMPIN BEST ACTRESS For Miranda Campin, there’s no better place to be than onstage. “There’s a sort of sensation I feel when I’m onstage that I don’t feel anywhere else,” she says. “My heart skips a beat when I feel the stage lights on my eyelashes, and I hear the orchestra play their starting notes. I’ve found a home in the theater and wouldn’t want my heart to be anywhere else.” Miranda has come a long way from her “101 Dalmatians” acting debut at age six. The rising theater star has accrued awards including Best Actress for her role in “The Crucible” and Outstanding Actress in Carroll’s thespian troupe. She’s also a member of Carroll’s varsity choral choir and show choir. In the years ahead, Miranda hopes to see her name in big-city lights. “I plan to major in musical theater and move to New York City to pursue my dream of being on Broadway,” she says. WHAT OTHERS SAY: “Miranda is an excellent young actor who brings a character study to an audition. She is always fresh, spontaneous and willing to change as directed,” says Roald Martinsen, theatre director. “She makes it easy for a director by her adaptability. Not all young actors have this skill.”

BILL TAIT STATE FARM INSURANCE AGENT Building life-long relationships with policyholders

I

t’s not always easy to work in the insurance industry, but Bill Tait loves the challenge of helping people find the right coverage. As a State Farm insurance agent, Bill brings more than two decades of experience to the job, enjoys meeting new people and is genuinely excited to help others. “I love being able to educate and assist my State Farm clients and prospects with all of their insurance needs,” says Bill. “I thrive in a business that allows me to spend quality time with people in my community, as well as work one-on-one with them to plan for the unexpected.” After graduating from Auburn University in 1996, Bill followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the insurance world. He worked at one insurance company for 20 years before making the decision to move to State Farm last year. It was with his two young daughters (Hannah, 6, and Bridgette, 5) in mind that he decided State Farm would be a welcome change. “As my daughters grow, I wanted a business that we as a family can work together,” says Bill. Since people are the most important part of Bill’s job, a typical day for him always includes meeting with State Farm clients to build relationships. He offers a range of insurance options including home, auto, renters, motorcycles, boats and other recreational vehicles, life, disability, long-term care, commercial lines and other products for business owners, as well as car and home purchases and refinances. “There is a big difference between being insured and being covered,” explains Bill. “Insurance is designed so that if something should happen to you or a family member, your quality of life does not have to change. This is why it’s important to have your policies reviewed regularly.” When he isn’t busy working, Bill enjoys spending time with his wife of 12 years, Nicole. They like taking the kids to Bicentennial Park, Southlake Town Square and local festivals, in addition to shopping and eating at local restaurants. Bill and his wife especially love trying all the different varieties of coffee at Central Market. As an avid golfer, Bill also looks forward to times when he can play at Timarron Country Club.

Out of all the areas I considered working in, one of the biggest priorities was finding a community that valued relationships and service “Out of all the areas I considered working in, one of the biggest priorities for me was finding a community that valued relationships and service,” says Bill. “It was clear that Southlake lined up with my focus.” Although the insurance industry is all about expecting the unexpected, you will always know what to expect with Bill. His job is to help you protect yourself so you can go back to enjoying life—no matter what happens. And with Bill’s expertise and passion for others, you can trust him to take care of you every step of the way.

hether you work from home or just need a place to flex your creative muscles, carving out a space in your home that inspires you is key to accomplishing your goals. If your home is equipped with an office or study, you already have a designated place for productivity. If you don’t have a home office or someone else in the family uses that space, don’t fret. We can help you create a perfect space for inspiration.

CLEAN AND BRIGHT Dark spaces are great for sleeping—and for storing bottles of wine—but when it comes to getting your creative mojo flowing, let there be light. More specifically, let there be soft, natural light and the color green. Research has shown that looking at shades of green helps enhance your creative performance, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Consider adding mirrors to reflect and multiply the room’s natural light, and framed photos or art in metallic frames can also be a great source of added gleam. If the room has dark flooring, layer with a lightcolored rug. If you have dark built-ins, painting shelving a warm color such as cream or gray can soften the room. Designer Nate Berkus suggests adding an element of warmth to a home workspace with textured pillows and setting your work station up to face a window rather than a wall. Berkus also suggests using round furniture in a confined space, such as accent tables, to increase circulation. THE ESSENTIALS Perhaps the most vital component of any creative space is storage. Before getting organized, determine the necessary equipment for your workspace. Do you need more than a computer and a printer? Using a laptop instead of a desktop frees you up to more easily move about your space and rearranging furniture doesn’t require as much forethought.

A Smarter Study Station THE TAYLOR WALNUT DESK OFFERS A STREAMLINED SPACE FOR SCHOLARS

I DETAILS Price: $399 Dimensions: 48"W x 50"H x 22"D Built-in hutch LandOfNod.com

SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

f your kids are accustomed to splaying out their homework in the same spot you’re serving dinner, just say no to the kitchen-table takeover. Instead, give them a designated space to complete their after-school assignments and study sessions. The Taylor Walnut Desk is just the place to inspire schoolwork diligence. Featuring a handy drawer for storing notepads, calculators, folders and other essentials, this desk makes it easy for your kid to get organized. A built-in hutch and accessory bar allow kids to customize their space with a hanging bin or hanging pen cup. You’ll need to buy these separately, but they’re perfect for storing schoolwork necessities, showing off décor or organizing those A+ papers before they appear on the fridge. The biggest perk to this desk, though? When your kids know they have a designated spot just for them, it just might give them an extra kick of motivation to hit their homework head-on. All your kids need is a comfy seat (the desk coordinates perfectly with any desk

chair from Land of Nod), and they’re ready to tackle any project. You won’t find this desk just anywhere; it’s made exclusively for Land of Nod by designer Bill Eastburn. Made from solid walnut with natural grain, this study station lends warmth to any space. It’s also available in classic white, if that better suits your style. With its sleek, minimalist design, this piece fits seamlessly in any room in your home. So if your kitchen looks more like a classroom, consider this your solution. The desk ships flat in a box, so assembly is required. And don’t worry about your kid being overzealous when approaching an assignment—the desk includes a tip-restraint kit to prevent tipping. With back-to-school season inevitably comes the renewed challenge of where your kids will complete their homework assignments. But with the Taylor Walnut Desk, students get their own homework headquarters. And who knows? They just might look forward to knocking out those math problems or finishing that essay. Hats off to the scholars!

School’s in Session PUBLIC SCHOOL 972 MAKES THE GRADE FOR COMFORT FOOD AND CRAFT BEER

espite its name, Public School 972 isn’t a place of higher learning—at least not in the traditional sense. The Californiabased gastropub aims to educate North Texans on the art of food and beer. Called PS 972 for short, the Addison eatery merges modern tastes with convivial fare. Add a chef-driven, seasonally inspired menu, and it’s a school everyone can get excited about. We like how PS 972 carries a scholastic theme throughout, from black-and-white composition notebooks for menus to a daily happy hour called recess. Even better that recess kicks off at 3 p.m. with wine on tap plus signature cocktails and craft beer from independent brewers such as Revolver Brewing and Oak Highlands Brewery, among other

local and regional favorites. For extra credit, the restaurant adds a shuffleboard, darts and Jenga to the mix. “It’s a very lively restaurant and serves as the perfect neighborhood hangout for people to relax, unwind and have fun,” says Phil Kastel, executive VP of culinary. Kastel describes PS 972, Texas’ second location of the gastropub, as approachable and laidback. If you’re tired of the same old thing when you dine out, this is the place to try something new. “It’s a spot for those who like to experiment with fun and unique flavors,” Kastel says. “[We serve] American comfort food with a twist—think Sriracha ketchup or meatballs with angry sauce.”

LOCALFLAVOR review The chef-driven menu has a little something for all tastes, from salads and handtossed pizza to handcrafted burgers as well as steak and fish dishes. With nine locations across five states, each Public School restaurant is a one-of-a-kind experience. For starters, the restaurant uses local ingredients whenever possible. The menu also changes seasonally to keep guests coming back for fun, interesting dishes. “We draw inspiration from our personal tastes and then experiment to see how we can make them unique or add modern elements,” says Kastel. “We get inspired by traveling among our different locations and learning more about the unique neighborhoods, cultures and flavors that make up each local community.” If you haven’t stopped into PS 972 yet, Kastel recommends trying a couple of his personal favorite menu items: Meatballs in Arrabiata Sauce and the Korean-Style Brussels Sprouts with Smoked Bacon. “Both are great twists on traditional bites,” he says. You also can’t go wrong with the always-popular Bacon Cheddar Tots—massive tots loaded with melty cheese and salty bacon. When it comes to burgers, the BBQ Bison Burger reigns supreme. A grass-fed patty is made exponentially better with whiskey barbecue sauce, Emmental cheese, bacon and mushrooms. On the lighter side of the menu, the Roasted Chicken and Quinoa Salad (arugula, feta, avocado, toasted walnuts and champagne vinaigrette) is a winner. PS 972 doesn’t offer much on the sweet side, but with the Nutella Cookie Sandwich, there’s really no need for improvement. When you get a mouthful of vanilla bean ice cream, bacon brittle and chocolate chunk cookie, it’s all you need to give this dessert an A+. Want other options? Check the dessert special of the day on the restaurant’s chalkboard. If you’re seeking a new spot for weekend brunch, PS 972 offers plenty of enticing reasons to make the drive. The Eggs Benedict Pizza (prosciutto, Grana Padano cheese, hollandaise and fried eggs) and the Edamame Hummus Toast (avocado, togarashi, bacon, furikake and eggs) are standouts. And because brunch calls for a little bubbly, we suggest settling in with a $5 carafe of mimosas or beermosas. When you feel nostalgic about your school days but also want to enjoy a cold beer with your burger (or a mimosa with your waffle), PS 972 will satisfy your yearning.

The Funkiest Donut Destination Prepare to be sweetly smitten at Peace, Love & Little Donuts

PEACE, LOVE & LITTLE DONUTS 601 E. Southlake Boulevard, Suite 100 817.329.3082 PeaceLoveAndLittleDonuts.com

60 • AUG 17

Chances are you’ve seen a creation from Peace, Love & Little Donuts in your Instagram feed. That’s because the far-out donut shop in the Village of Timarron churns out the cutest little donuts that are pretty as a picture. Each donut is freshly made by hand and topped with funky embellishments that range from mocha frosting and marshmallows to gummy worms and maple bacon. Each donut is big enough to satisfy but small enough to enjoy more than one without feeling guilty. Since its grand opening this summer, locals have flocked to Peace, Love & Little Donuts any way they can. “It’s cool to see families who live in Timarron walk, bike or take their scooters to see us,” says Rod Moruss, managing partner. “We’ve been blessed by the support of the Southlake community.” While donuts are often celebrated as breakfast fare, at Peace, Love & Little Donuts, you can #FeedYourInnerHippie any time; the shop makes freshly ground coffee (including Dallas-based Novel Coffee Roasters) and donuts continuously throughout the day. Stop by on a Saturday morning, or grab some donuts before or after school with your kids; donuts are made fresh right in front of you. Plus, there’s nothing quite like the shop’s Dragon Donut with vanilla frosting and black, green and white sprinkles to ignite that #DragonPride. If you typically order a dozen glazed donuts, you’ll be psyched by the options here. Guests can order three styles of donuts: groovy (featuring classic toppings such as powdered sugar and cinnamon sugar), far-out (frosted donuts in flavors such as maple and banana) or funkadelic (donuts dolloped with frosting and creative toppings). We admit the funkadelic options are for the sugar fiends in the crowd, but that didn’t stop us from sampling a few varieties. The Maple Bacon, which tastes like a decadent pancake-and-bacon breakfast, is our go-to goodie. The Samoa, tailored after the popular Girl Scout cookie, is one of the house favorites. Your kids will probably go for the Dirt Donut topped with chocolate frosting, crushed cookies and a gummy worm. To keep your taste buds tantalized, Moruss plans to roll out flavors to coincide with the season. Next up? Pumpkin donuts. The next time you have a hankering for something sweet, think outside the (donut) box at Peace, Love & Little Donuts.

CARROLL COUNSELOR SHARES ADVICE FOR YOUNG DRAGONS HEADING BACK TO CLASS

I

f your little Dragons have a few back-to-school jitters, Nicole Stolle has some helpful advice. In her 29-year career in education, the Old Union Elementary counselor has helped students have not only a phenomenal first day of school but also a successful school year. Here’s how Dragons can seize the day on August 28 and beyond. MOST REWARDING PART OF MY JOB IS: being able to comfort, problem-solve, support and listen to students when they are experiencing something challenging or new. Most of all, I am able to be students’ cheerleader. Working with children through the hard stuff and being a positive influence on the lives of young learners is what I find most rewarding. PARENTS CAN HELP KIDS PREPARE FOR THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL BY: attending Meet the Teacher, visiting the school and playground, and meeting neighborhood friends. If you have a fearful child, give your Dragon a small family token or picture to provide some comfort as he or she enters the new classroom. MY BEST ADVICE AT THE START OF THE SCHOOL YEAR IS: to stay positive. Talk about having fun, learning something new and making friends. Describe what the school day will look like and leave an encouraging note for your child to read either in a lunchbox or folder. Having jitters about the first day of school or starting at a new school is common. Listen to your child’s fears and provide encouraging words. I also recommend reading books together about trying new things. ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL, I ENCOURAGE PARENTS TO: set aside time before and after school to make this an important day. It will be an emotional day for you as well! I also encourage you to meet other families and begin building relationships.

SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

I BEGIN EACH DAY BY: greeting students and parents before school with a smile and a hello. Students will run up to me and give me a hug or a high five. They appreciate walking into a positive, happy school. Then my day will follow with guidance lessons, lunch groups, parent meetings and teacher collaborations. As a counselor, each day is different, and I have to be flexible and willing to talk with students in crisis as the need arises. AS THE YEAR PROGRESSES, I ENJOY: watching students evolve into passionate and caring Dragons. At the beginning of the year, I spend time with new students and families. I help kids find friends and transition to a new school or grade level. I always focus on social and emotional connections. During the year, I am able to teach each class about the importance of kindness and positive character, as well as teamwork, problem-solving and safety. As a counselor, I am able to help students with strategies to persevere through the different challenges that occur. MORE THAN ANYTHING, I LIKE TO EMPHASIZE: kindness. I read “How Full is Your Bucket?” by Tom Rath and Mary Reckmeyer. The book is about filling other people’s imaginary buckets with kindness, helpfulness and integrity. If kids can think about themselves and others with compassion and sincerity, their year will be a success in so many ways. PARENTS CAN GET INSIGHT INTO THEIR KIDS’ SCHOOL DAY BY: asking some conversationsparking questions. What was the best thing about today? Describe how you were a good friend. How can you help your teacher or friends? Tell me the high and low for the day. MY FAVORITE DRAGON MOMENT: was ringing the Dragon Bell after I was hired at Carroll. All new employees get the opportunity to ring the bell and become a member of the Dragon family. Dragon traditions are what I love best. The small-school environment creates a family feeling, and I love that comfort.

The Best in Texas Beaches TAKE A ROAD TRIP TO FAMILY-FRIENDLY SOUTHERN SHORES

W

ith school buses soon coming out of retirement for the season, taking a family vacation may not be top of mind. However, a beach family getaway is not out of the question, yet! The Gulf of Mexico may create beaches for five U.S. states, but we all know the best ones are found along the Texas coast. With islands and bays galore down south, here are some of our favorites.

Stewart Beach, Galveston Galveston boasts more than 32 miles of Gulf-side beaches, but not all sand was created equal. There are seven beach parks along the Gulf coast of Galveston, but only one is recommended as the family-friendly one of the bunch. Located on the northeastern side of Galveston Island, Stewart Beach has much to offer in terms of amenities. The restrooms and showers are well taken care of, and

80 • AUG 17

Stewart is one of the few beaches with lifeguards on duty. There is also a souvenir shop and snack bar. Beach wheelchairs make beach fun accessible for sun worshippers and swimmers of all ages. You can also rent chairs and umbrellas if you’d rather not feel the burn. Rest assured the day will remain family-friendly, as no alcohol is allowed on this beach. Admission ranges from $10 to $12. If you don’t plan on camping on another beach nearby or opted not to rent a beach house, there are many hotels along Galveston’s Gulf coast. But only one can boast status as being the most historic—at more than 100 years old! The Hotel Galvez and Spa is located approximately one and a half miles south of Stewart Beach. It offers not only a premium night’s sleep, but also an onsite health spa and a fully equipped fitness center. The swimming pool and hot tub make for a well-rounded resort-style experience. While there may be no need to venture out while staying at the Galvez (aside from visiting Stewart Beach), the hotel provides bicycles to guests allowing you to explore the seawall of Galveston Island and its many restaurants, shops and, of course, beaches. Mustang Island, Port Aransas Families looking for a beach vacation sans myriad of tourists, perhaps found at other Gulf Coast shores, should plan to visit Mustang Island. To find this almosthidden gem, make your way south of Corpus Christi across the John F. Kennedy Memorial Causeway to the island. With an 18-mile stretch of public shoreline, Mustang Island is for surfers, sand castle architects, sunbathers and nature lovers. It’s not unusual for beach goers to kayak along the coast in the morning, relax under an umbrella in the afternoon sun and wade in the warm evening waters of the Gulf admiring some of the 600 species of native fish—all in one day. And at the end of your very full day, the question is: Where will you stay? You could choose between campsites and RV parks, but if you are looking to crash in a beach town, look to Port Aransas or “Port A,” as locals call it. Choose from hotels, cottages or beach houses—Port A offers all three. As the only city on Mustang Island, it’s packed with tons of character in a small-town setting where you can sleep, shop and dine on island time. When in the Gulf, do as Gulf diners do—look for the best seafood in town. Ranked as the No. 1 Port Aransas restaurant by Trip Advisor, Irie’s Island Food promises to serve dishes that put a twist on local island favorites and those from around the world. MustangIslandTexas.org, PortAransas.org, IriesIslandFood.com

Matagorda Bay and Beach, Matagorda If you are looking for the perfect balance of high-activity and laid-back vacationing, a visit to Matagorda Bay and Beach is in order. Located at the mouth of the Colorado River on the upper Texas coast, the town of Matagorda sees its share of tourists. However, with 22 miles of beach reachable by vehicle and an additional 33 miles only accessible by boat, there’s plenty of sand to go around. You can build sandcastles, search for sand dollars and dip your feet in the sparkling waters of the bay. If you’d rather dip a fishing line in the bay waters, there are 55 miles of coastline to explore. The bay itself is 6.6 feet deep and covers approximately 422 square miles. Known for being one of the best fishing locations in the region, Matagorda Bay has garnered this status based on its nutrient-rich estuary that is home to more than 21 different types of fish. Whether you prefer wade fishing, drift fishing, surf fishing or offshore fishing from small boats, the bay—and an additional plethora of rivers, creeks and bayous—is a fisherman’s paradise. If you can pull yourself away from the shore, we suggest heading to Poco Playa Bar and Village Restaurant. This 17,000-square-foot restaurant, bar and artisan village features a casual indoor and outdoor dining and drinking eatery, tackle shop, boutique and museum. MatagordaBayTexas.com, PocoPlaya.com

Kim lost 46 pounds!†

Kim, actual patient.

This is my third go around with Medi-Weightloss®. Originally my thought was to lose weight just to look better. I never grasped the full meaning of making a lifestyle change. Therefore, my first two attempts failed. With my daughter heading off to college in a few years, I began preparing to be an emptynester. As I prepared, I realized I had just five pictures of my daughter and I together. I avoided the camera because of my weight. Now, with a different frame of mind and motivation, I was determined to start taking pictures I could be proud of with my daughter. In April 2014, I began the program for the third time. My success has been unbelievable. I am down from a size 14 to a size 4. I will be starting Wellness soon hoping to be in a size 2. It took me looking back over the years, with much regret about avoiding pictures, to get motivated. Now I get to have small disagreements with my daughter about who is going to wear what outfit because we are now in the same size. Thank you Medi-Weightloss® for the continued support, motivation, and encouragement. I’m looking forward to many awesome pictures in the future!

Redheads Have More Fun Jam out to the sweet songs of Ed Sheeran in concert

O

ur favorite redheaded British pop artist is coming to Dallas to the delight of his female fans (and men brave enough to admit it). The swoonworthy singer/songwriter, Ed Sheeran, stops by the American Airlines Center on August 18 as part of his Divide world tour. Fans will love singing along to favorites such as “Shape of You” (which debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100) and “Castle on the Hill” from his third studio album, Divide. You’ll be surprised to see how this worldfamous musician captivates a crowd during performances of his most personal songs, using just an acoustic guitar, a looping pedal and raw talent. Although he has always loved music and released several EPs early in his career, Sheeran didn’t become a household name until he came to America. He signed with Atlantic Records and released Plus, his first studio album, in 2011. He quickly became friends with bands and iconic musicians including One Direction and Taylor Swift, who invited Sheeran to co-write songs with them. Sheeran even joined Swift on her 2013 world tour. A year later, Multiply was released, hitting number one in the United States and the United Kingdom. This album made him a Grammy Award- winning singer after he received Song of the Year for “Thinking Out Loud.” When Divide was released in March, the Brit broke Spotify records when his album received nearly 57 million streams in just 24 hours. It’s impossible not to listen to Sheeran without swaying along (and possibly with a tear in your eye), as his lyrics and melodies are heartfelt, emotional and extremely catchy. And seeing him perform live in concert? Well, that’s an experience words can’t describe.
