We couldn’t be more excited to feature Southlake Olympian Hailey Hernandez on this month’s front cover! Prior to her departure to Tokyo, we caught up with Hailey at the liberty mural near the south entrance to Bicentennial Park. It’s a fitting backdrop of patriotism and spirit for this hometown hero. As I stare down this month’s deadline, the women’s 3-meter springboard preliminary round is mere hours away. I expect Hailey still has this same gaze of confidence about the future as she did at the photoshoot that day. I know we are all wishing her well. Regardless of the outcome, she’s already made Southlake proud. As Hailey boldly faces her future, so are thousands of area high school seniors. In “Eight Seniors On The Rise,'' we once again feature some of the best and brightest students around. They’ve already achieved so much, and the sky's the limit for the class of ’22. Carroll students in particular have benefitted from Carroll ISD’s excellent education. Despite budget shortfalls that threaten educational opportunities for many school districts throughout the state, Dragons continue to thrive thanks to the unwavering support of the Carroll Education Foundation (CEF). In recent years, CEF has revamped its organization with an eye on the future, and the results have been nothing short of amazing. In “Funding Education,” we celebrate 25 years of a community united in support of an exceptional education for all Dragons. Sometimes the more things change, the more they stay the same. I’m glad my face is back to introduce the many great stories ahead of you in this month’s issue.

Keeping Carroll Safe

How CISD Nurses Helped Families Through COVID-19 After a year of masking, remote learning and social distancing, Dragons are finally returning to classes in person in the fall like they were before a pandemic hit in spring 2020. While COVID-19 is still a lingering concern, its hold on the district is weaker than it was last year — and Carroll’s nurses are to thank for helping return the district back to normal.

ASSEMBLING THE TASK FORCE

The district had just let out for spring break when Tarrant County got its first confirmed case of COVID-19 last March. It wasn’t that long after when the district shut its doors and shifted its classes online. “We thought we would be back later that month,” head nurse Karen Flexer says. “When we didn’t come back and the numbers kept skyrocketing, we knew this was sticking around and we needed to get serious about it.” The district was quick to approve a COVID-19 task force, which comprised of district nurses, administrators and school principals committed to keeping the district’s kids and teachers safe. “The COVID task force put us all in the same room so we could hear how they were all affected by COVID-19,” Karen says. “We had to look at everything differently.”

18 • AUG 21

KEEPING EVERYBODY SAFE

The task force’s first order of business was collecting masks, gloves and hand sanitizer for use on its campuses. After securing enough protective equipment, the task force strategized plans for high school graduation and returning to school in the fall, using masks, touch-free thermometers and social distancing measures to stop the spread of COVID-19. “The school nurses played a huge role in the public health outreach — just educating parents on the symptoms, what to do if a family member tested positive, taking temperatures at graduation,” Karen says. The task force also implemented a prescreening check so families could check for COVID-19 symptoms at home before sending their child to school. It also created a COVID-19 dashboard to keep track of cases throughout the school year.

MOVING FORWARD

By the end of May 2021, Carroll ISD saw 827 total COVID-19 cases throughout the school year, with zero student casualties and overall cases never exceeding 25%, according to the district’s COVID-19 dashboard. Karen credits that to everyone being patient and working together selflessly, whether it was nurses checking on students’ temperatures or parents prescreening their kids at home. “I feel like everybody wanted to keep each other safe,” Karen says. “They were hyper-sensitive about putting anybody else in danger.” Going into the new year, Karen just can’t wait to see everyone being comfortable around each other again. “I saw so many parents reach out to us being grateful, notes and emails from people taking the time to thank us,” Karen says. “At the end of the day, we are nurses, and we just want to give compassionate care and be an advocate for all of our students.” SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

ALANNAH BRUCE CARROLL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Miss Dallas Outstanding Teen Alannah Bruce has always believed that others’ differences should be celebrated, not condemned. Today she works tirelessly to make everyone feel welcome, whether she’s in the halls of Carroll ISD, volunteering with the city or competing at Miss America pageants. Born and raised in Southlake, Alannah grew up surrounded by pageant life, with her mother Heather regularly competing while she was an infant. When Alannah became 13, she started competing herself and won multiple Miss Outstanding Teen titles in numerous cities, including Duncanville, Fort Worth, Grapevine and Dallas. Through her social impact initiative “Celebrate You, Valuing Our Differences,” Alannah helps break down cultural barriers as a founding member of the Mayor’s Alliance For Unity and Culture, where she regularly volunteers for city events such as Celebrate Southlake and Heart Talks. Alannah hopes to study at the University of Texas at Austin to become a child life specialist so she can continue to make a difference.

ANIKA BAJPAI CARROLL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Anika Art Foundation Founder When Anika Bajpai’s mother Vidisha donated one of her paintings to benefit Hurricane Harvey survivors in 2017, Anika realized her talents could be used to help others. So in 2018, she started the Anika Art Foundation to do just that. As an illustrator, painter and artist, Anika has produced and sold multiple paintings that have helped raise around $10,000 for local organizations such as the Southlake Women’s Club, Kids Matter International, GRACE Grapevine, the Battered Women’s Foundation and the Carroll Education Foundation. She’s also traveled to India and the Bahamas to teach children and donate materials so they could create their own art, which Anika says is her favorite part of the foundation. Along with her community service efforts, Anika excels in her art and animation classes at Carroll ISD. She hopes to enroll at the University of Texas at Austin or the University of Florida and become a visual effects designer after she graduates.

ERIN PITCHER CARROLL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

DAVIS ANDERSON GRAPEVINE FAITH CHRISTIAN SCHOOL

Choir Vice President

Esports, Football and Soccer Varsity Member

After spending last year serving as the Carroll Choir historian, Erin Pitcher is rising up the ranks and will serve as its vice president this year. Fostered by her love of singing, Erin joined the choir program in sixth grade and hasn’t looked back since. As historian, Erin was in charge of taking pictures at all the choir’s events. It was the leadership experience she gained that enticed Erin to run and earn the position of vice president. With her new title and responsibilities, Erin hopes to more deeply unify and connect all of Carroll’s choirs. Along with her love of singing, Erin has a passion for songwriting. Erin says she loves it because she can be her most authentic self when writing songs. While most of her post-graduation college plans are still up in the air, Erin already knows she wants to join her college’s a cappella group and learn more about music and songwriting.

No matter what sport he’s playing, Davis Anderson takes control of the field. Not only has Davis acted as Lions Football’s wide receiver, cornerback and kicker, but he also plays as center back for Lions Soccer. And last year, Davis helped pave the way for the school’s inaugural esports team as a founding member. Davis has made the honor roll and academic all-state all four years of high school. He’s also involved in various academic extracurriculars, including the Student Leadership University, where he has represented Grapevine Faith at national conferences. Since sixth grade, Davis has traveled to Tijuana, Mexico, each summer to build houses with Youth With A Mission (YWAM) Homes of Hope. As a sophomore, he also participated in a VBS mission trip to India and aspired to return as an upperclassman, but he was unable to due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After graduation, Davis aspires to pursue a degree in astrophysics or astronautical engineering.

MASON COLE LIBERTY CHRISTIAN SCHOOL

International Thespian Society Troupe 6505 President After seeing how performances provided an escape for audiences, Mason Cole knew he had a heart for theater. That passion has brought about not only high school leadership roles but also post-grad potential. Hot off of the prestigious Summer High School Training Program at DePaul University’s Theatre School, Mason takes the role as the Liberty Christian School thespian society president during his senior year. But it’s not the first time he’s led the department. Last year, he directed the school’s successful production of “Clue.” He has also been recognized for his work in front of the curtain, including placing first during last year’s TAPPS duet acting state competition. On top of his role as the Mandarin Club’s president, Mason says he strives to be a leader in the classroom as well, always trying to meet new people, raise his hand first in class and go out of his way to help others. After graduation, Mason aspires to return to DePaul University, this time to obtain a degree in acting.

SOPHIE PASCAL CARROLL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

KDGN Executive Producer, Color Guard Captain

Sophie Pascal wears multiple hats at Carroll. That will be especially evident during the upcoming year, where she will serve as both the color guard captain and the KDGN executive producer. Since hearing about her mom's best friend’s experiences in high school, Sophie had always wanted to be involved in color guard. KDGN, meanwhile, came about because a color guard teammate told her about it and encouraged her to join. Since then, she has worked her way from a staff member to the executive producer, loving every minute of it. She is thankful for her “school moms” Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Randall for not only teaching her, but for always being someone she can turn to. Sophie says her favorite high school memories involved working with KDGN and taking pictures of the band. She plans to major in journalism in college.

HANNAH COAN WESTLAKE ACADEMY

Art Historical Society President, Art Club Founder From the moment she could hold a pencil, Hannah Coan was drawn to art. From illustrating the characters from the “Magic Tree House” series to realism and animation, her love of art transcends one specific style. That passion led her to start the art club at Westlake Academy after she realized it didn’t have one. With a desire to teach and inspire younger grades, the art club’s goal this past year was to create an animated short film after studying different animators and animation techniques. But that’s not all Hannah does. Alongside her work with the art club, Hannah is also the Art Historical Society’s president. Though this past year put a damper on the historical society’s activities — namely its charity events and gallery night — Hannah is looking forward to what this next year will hold. Following graduation, Hannah has plans to study computer science and continue creating art in any way she can.

BRETT BELLEVILLE CARROLL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Green Jacket

Alongside serving as a Swim4Elise Foundation ambassador and the founder of the Dragons4Dragons scholarship program, Brett Belleville added another accolade to his resume: being honored as a Green Jacket. After being nominated by his teachers, Brett wrote his application essay — which prompted students to write about what it means to be a Green Jacket — about the different facets of life that makes a person an individual. Brett says while he wasn’t expecting the honor, it felt really good to be recognized by the CSHS faculty as a Green Jacket. During the upcoming school year, Brett will serve alongside his fellow Green Jackets as an usher for all of Carroll ISD’s musical and theatre performances, sports games and civic events. Excited to represent the school, Brett will spend his senior year illustrating the excellence Carroll ISD fosters in its students. Brett aspires to join the United States Air Force or Naval Academy after graduating.

An eight-time All-American and silver medalist from the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, Anastasia Pozdniakova is a Russian diver that has won backto-back NCAA individual titles while diving for the University of Houston. Anastasia was named the Conference USA Diver of the Year in 2007 and 2009, as well as the NCAA Diver of the Year in 2009, according to a media release. She previously coached at Spring Branch ISD before joining Carroll ISD. “We are very excited to have such a highly qualified and experienced diving coach joining our Dragon Swim and Dive coaching staff,” swimming coach Kevin Murphy says. “The future looks very bright for our Dragon high school divers as coach Pozdniakova takes the reins of our Dragon Diving program.”

He then served as assistant principal for three years before becoming its head principal in 2008. “I am both humbled and honored to be appointed as the next principal at Carroll Senior High School,” Ryan says in MySouthlakeNews.com. “My 19 years in the district has instilled in me a tremendous desire to care for each and every Dragon student who walks our CISD hallways. Southlake city councilmembers, school board trustees and supporters wore commemorative T-shirts, marched in a parade and waved goodbye to Hailey as Southlake Police escorted her away to her flight in Tokyo. Hailey competed in the women’s 3-meter springboard competition, which took place July 30-August 1. SOUTHLAKE CARROLL EARNS SECOND PLACE IN LONE STAR CUP COMPETITION After a year of postseason and championship games, Southlake Carroll came in second place in the Lone Star Cup competition. The Lone Star Cup, given annually by the University Interscholastic League, awards points to schools in each classification based on their athletics teams’ performances in district and state championships. The winning school in each classification receives the UIL Lone Star Cup trophy and a $1,000 scholarship. Despite its athletes’ hard work, CISD fell short of winning the cup after earning 99 points, coming behind Conroe The Woodlands’ 111 points. CARROLL ISD LAUNCHES ‘ASK THE SUPERINTENDENT’ COMMUNICATION INITIATIVE Last month, Carroll ISD began “Ask The Superintendent,” an online forum that allows any student, parent or community member to ask a question to Dr. Lane Ledbetter directly with the option to remain anonymous. The feature was added to Carroll ISD’s website, with Dr. Ledbetter committed to answering within 24 hours of receiving a question. “‘Ask The Superintendent’ is just that – giving anyone immediate access to ask me any question that is top of mind,” Dr. Ledbetter says in MySouthlakeNews.com. “While this is a small initiative in our overall communication plans, our goal is to improve access and response time, as well as being a good neighbor to our community.”

Established in 2014, EVO Entertainment is an Austin-based company that aims to be the destination spot for all things related to entertainment. With locations in Fredericksburg, Kyle, San Marcos and San Antonio, the business is looking to expand into the Dallas-Fort Worth market, and it wants to establish its first footprint in Southlake. “There’s no better place to plant a flag and say we’re in DFW than in Southlake,” EVO Entertainment CEO Mitch Roberts says. “It’s a beautiful development, a great community and we couldn’t be more excited to be a part of it.” Mitch brought the site plan to the Southlake City Council and the planning and zoning commission for consideration during a joint meeting on Tuesday, June 29, which was unanimously approved. According to the site plan, the 68,000-square-foot venue will have seven theater screens dedicated to movie showings. A full restaurant and bar will be included, as well as bowling and arcade games. EVO Entertainment aims to open at 1450 Plaza Place by December. “It’s really a destination zone,” Chief Development Officer Chris Cline says. “We’re super excited about bringing our concept to Southlake.”

TUTOR

FRISKE TUTORING AND TEST PREP ACADEMY OWNER SHARES HER TUTORING SECRETS

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A TUTOR? I have tutored and provided a variety of educational services to families as an independent academic consultant for 25 years. WHY DID YOU OPEN FRISKE TUTORING AND TEST PREP ACADEMY? I believe that excellence in education paves the way to a life of success. I wanted to help other students reach their academic goals and assist families in navigating the journey of education for their children. My business began in my kitchen at home, tutoring students before tests while helping my own kids understand their homework nearby. Family-to-family referrals helped my business grow and prosper. WHAT SUBJECTS AND TESTS DO YOU HELP STUDENTS WITH? I help students in grades kindergarten through 12th grade with all subjects except foreign language. I assist in student understanding of all math levels, reading comprehension and fluency, writing, study skills, test-taking strategies, Advanced Placement course understanding and test preparation and academic organization — all important components to success. I help students of all learning styles and abilities: special needs, accelerated students, remedial students and on-level learners.

WHAT SHOULD PARENTS CONSIDER WHEN LOOKING FOR A TUTOR? First and foremost, an understanding of how to best help students master class content and grow their knowledge base. A great tutor should understand the nuances and teaching standards of the school a student attends. Look for a tutor who will follow the teaching methodology of your district, knows current teaching modalities and is up to date on current state standards so that students do not get confused. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF TUTORING FOR STUDENTS? Tutoring unequivocally works to raise student understanding and scores. Learning to win at the game of education produces confidence and starts a spiral effect of success and happiness. This evolutionary process puts students on the path to accomplishment. WHY DO YOU LOVE BEING A TUTOR? Gosh, I could write a book on this — there are so many reasons! Perhaps the greatest reason of all is the huge smile on the face of a student who has learned to master a challenging concept. I love those “lightbulb” moments; they truly make my job so amazing. My students are fantastic triers, learners and doers. I am honored to partner with some of the best families in the area to help their children achieve their academic dreams.

FUNDING EDUCATION THE CARROLL EDUCATION FOUNDATION STAYS TRUE TO ITS MISSION 25 YEARS LATER BY DAVID DUNN

O

ver 700 teachers educate over 8,600 students in Carroll ISD every year, according to district enrollment numbers. Those teachers instruct more than 250 different courses, from core subjects like mathand English to STEM programs like engineering and robotics. And they’re able to do all of that thanks in no small part to the parents, business leaders and community stakeholders involved with the Carroll Education Foundation. First incorporated in 1996, the Carroll Education Foundation (CEF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that financially supports the district through its annual programming. Since its inception 25 years ago, CEF has raised over $3 million in support of critical educational infrastructure and the development of an investment fund ensuring its support for years to come. But if you ask any of its board members, their work has only just begun.

GRANTING OPPORTUNITIES

In 1983, after finishing law school at Southern Methodist University and starting his own law practice, Brad Bradley was looking for a community to settle in with his family. That was when a client told him about a small city called Southlake. “He kind of talked me into moving here,” Brad says. “I had a 2-year-old at the time. We were living in an apartment in Bedford, and we figured we needed to buy a house somewhere.” With a population of fewer than 3,000 people, Brad says the area was much more rural compared to today. “It wasn’t even a place you could find back then,” Brad remarks. “Southlake Boulevard was two lanes instead of six. Cows would get out onto it and stop traffic, not the stoplights.” But one pillar that did stand out in Southlake was Carroll ISD. At the time, Carroll ISD was a 3A school district hot off the heels of winning a baseball state championship. Even back then, Brad says Carroll ISD’s reputation preceded itself. “The school district was always a big generator,” he says. “I think the school has been the most major attraction for many people all along.” It didn’t take long for Brad to get involved with the city. The same year he moved in, Brad co-founded the Southlake Chamber of Commerce and served as its head director. He also began serving as the assistant district attorney for Tarrant County and as the assistant attorney general for the state of Texas. But he didn’t start getting involved with the school district until he took his son Ryan to a parent-teacher SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

night at Carroll Middle School in 1985. “The science teacher had gone out of his way to get animals for biology,” he says. “He had gerbils, snakes, and all of it came out of his pocket. He had to get the animals, the cages, the food, everything. I got into a discussion with the teacher about how great it would be if the school district funded that sort of thing. He said they were never going to do that.” That was when he got the idea to start a foundation that could raise funds for CISD teachers and classrooms. He started by recruiting 12 board members, then tasked each of them to raise $5,000 for a total of $60,000. Those members raised funds through several different avenues, from brunch fundraisers to roasts of prominent residents like Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw and former Southlake Mayor Rick Stacy. But the real fun began when the board would go through grant applications to decide where best to apply the funds. “The idea was if you had an idea that would benefit the students in your class, you could apply for up to $10,000 and get funds to buy equipment for whatever you needed,” Brad says. “The process of going through the applications and boiling them down was enjoyable because you learned a lot about the teachers and what’s important to them.” But Brad’s favorite part was the check presentations, when his members paraded through the schools and presented a big check to the teachers who won a grant. “It was really fun,” he smiles. “The Dragon mascot was there, the drumline was performing and the teachers were usually really surprised that they got it.” AUG 21 • 47

And since Southlake is home to my business and family, you know who we are and where to find us! What is the most rewarding part of your job? It’s so rewarding to watch selfconscious patients discover self-confidence during orthodontic treatment. A smile is powerful that way. Even our office mascot, T-Rex, wasn’t always the king of dinosaurs. Like most of us, he battled self-consciousness for one reason or another, be it for his tiny arms or big teeth. My reward is seeing my patients roar with confidence after their smile transformations!

Meet Carroll ISD’s Deputy Superintendent

C

arroll ISD Deputy Superintendent Dr. Courtney Carpenter knew from an early age she wanted to be an educator. After joining the district in May, she quickly went to work building relationships, listening and learning from stakeholders and setting up Carroll ISD for success. Now heading into her 24th year in education, Dr. Carpenter says she’s excited to not only see every student return to classes in person, but also provide instructional and wellness support for all Dragons.

MY MOM WAS... a young, single mother and aspired to go back to school for her college degree when I was about 8 years old. I have vivid memories of watching her do homework and prepare lessons for her practice teaching classrooms. She would practice her lessons on myself and my brother, and we loved interacting with her. I believe that I saw early on the impact she was having on students. I ADORED MY… kindergarten teachers, Miss Moon and Miss Lewis. They had me hooked on being a teacher with the weekly alphabet characters. I fondly remember playing school at my grandmother’s house every day after school. She even installed an old chalkboard for me to ‘teach’ my stuffed animals and little brother for as long as he’d sit and listen to me! AS A YOUNG TEACHER… I loved making an impact on young people across elementary to high school ages. My passion grew to wanting to impact more students and teachers. That is what piqued my interest in pursuing further education — master’s and doctoral degrees — and leadership opportunities as a campus principal and central office administrator. DR. LEDBETTER IS A VISIONARY… leader with high expectations. He challenges his team to strive for excellence in creating opportunities for students that will help them reach their greatest potential. As an educator who believes in leaving things better than they were the day before, I want to work for a leader who believes in inspiring excellence. Dr. Ledbetter believes in a shared vision and distributive leadership. He believes in community engagement and that philosophy provides a listening culture where stakeholders come together for a shared vision. WHEN DR. LEDBETTER LEFT MIDLOTHIAN ISD... I, at the time, was serving as the interim superintendent. As I watched him take his vision to a new

56 • AUG 21

place, it seemed like a natural fit to want to continue working with him. I was inspired by his vision for public education. I BELIEVE THAT THIS ROLE… will provide opportunities for alignment across departments and campuses in regards to district goals, strategies and actions, whether that is through the District and Campus Improvement Plan Process, Strategic Plan Process or other large systems. This role oversees the departments of curriculum and instruction, communications, technology, special programs, principals and some district-level responsibilities. WORKING WITH… principals closely allows for the opportunity of executive-level coaching and thought-partnership. There is great power in collective wisdom and providing campus and district leaders with a reflective process when determining actionable steps. Working with leaders across departments and understanding the intricacies of how each department’s initiatives impact the educational process as a whole is a critical process to alignment and necessary for continued success. THIS SCHOOL YEAR, I AM EXCITED ABOUT… building relationships with students, staff, parents and the community; going through the Strategic Plan Process to define the future direction of CISD and what our community values in terms of student success metrics; visiting campuses and seeing the great tradition of excellence in CISD; and engaging in conversations around the highest hopes for our Dragons. WHAT BEING A DRAGON MEANS TO ME IS… we expect excellence for all Dragons: students, staff, parents and the community. It means that we value traditions of high expectations and [strive] for unlimited potential. It means a family of strength and unity, where we are better together.

key Berry Smash comes with Old Forester 100 proof, lemon, honey and blackberries, while the Cucumber Collins is a mixture of Stolichnaya cucumber vodka, dry Curacao, agave, lime, Fee Brothers celery and peach bitters. Embodying its namesake, Persimmons also offers a couple of cocktails made with the same fruit. Start off with the Persimmons prosecco, made with Aviation American gin, amaretto, pineapple, persimmons simple and La Marca prosecco, or The Zaharias, Tito's mixed with elderflower, lime, persimmons simple and angostura bitters. After a few cocktails, it’s time to indulge in some of Persimmons’ offerings. Its pork belly burnt ends, which feature 12-hour smoked pork belly tossed in barbecue sauce, is one of its most popular appetizers, as well as the Texas cheese fries and smoked queso. Those looking for a lighter meal should order one of Persimmons’ salads, two of which feature the persimmons fruit. The burrata caprese salad is complete with burrata, heirloom tomatoes, basil, chopped candied walnuts, pomegranate seeds and balsamic persimmon dressing, while the goat cheese arugula salad also features the balsamic persimmon dressing, along with cherry tomatoes and candied nuts. Diners who come to Persimmons hungry will no doubt leave satiated. The Smashburger, with American cheese, smash sauce, lettuce, tomato and a toasted potato bun, will satisfy any craving while the Airline Chicken comes with country potatoes and a family recipe in Tita’s cream sauce. “We have sauces that are secret sauces, but come from our executive sous’ family. It’s his mom’s recipe,” Samantha says. “Every sauce we have, every dressing we have is made from scratch.” For sauce aficionados, Persimmons delivers. The crispy chicken sandwich features a signature sauce along with hand-breaded chicken breast, lettuce, onions and tomatoes on a toasted potato bun. Meanwhile, the 10-ounce filet, served with cauliflower broccoli mash, features a peppercorn sauce, and the savory zucchini cakes come complete with a sweet and spicy sauce drizzled on top. After eating your way through Persimmons’ savory menu, finish off the night with a delectable dessert. The Persimmons bread pudding features the fruit prominently along with a caramel cream sauce, while friends and family can share the Nutella s’mores. And Persimmons’ seasonal cheesecake is the perfect way to end a date night. From golfers coming off the green to families looking for a night out, Persimmons Bar & Grill delivers luxury, elegance and coziness that will impress any patron.

Mix-And-Match Mediterranean

CAVA Opens On Southlake Boulevard A new healthy fast-casual restaurant has made its way to Southlake: CAVA. After CAVA Group acquired Zoe’s Kitchen in 2018, the new Mediterranean concept has been hard at work converting select former Zoe’s locations into CAVA storefronts. And now, Southlake has one of its own. “CAVA’s founding team includes three firstgeneration Greek Americans, so we’ve been rooted in the Mediterranean way since day one,” CAVA CEO and co-founder Brett Schulman says. “We founded CAVA with the goal of bringing Mediterranean to every table, because food should taste and make you feel good.” After walking into the sleek bistro, first-time guests can come in and dip a warm pita into any one of CAVA’s delicious dips and spreads, from the roasted eggplant puree to the red pepper hummus to the Jalapeno-infused feta mousse. Next, diners can customize their main entree, with bases ranging from salads, mini pitas and grain bowls and toppings including different proteins, dips and dressings. Fan-favorites include the hearty Chicken and RightRice Bowl topped with grilled chicken, tzatziki, crumbled feta and Greek vinaigrette, and the spicy Harissa Avocado Bowl with fire-grilled harissa honey chicken, fire-roasted corn, basmati rice and avocado. Diners with a hearty hankering can savor a pita stuffed with grilled meatballs and braised lamb, and the Lemon Chicken Bowl packs a sour punch thanks to New York Shuk’s preserved lemon vinaigrette. And handcrafted desserts such as chocolate fudge brownies and chocolate chip cookies ensure every meal ends with a sweet complement. “We bring a fresh culinary perspective rooted in the bold flavors and wholesome ingredients of the Levant region of the Mediterranean,” Brett says. “Every aspect of CAVA’s experience is designed to meet the evolving needs and wants of our guests to bring the Mediterranean way of life to more people.” Whether you indulge in the homemade chickpea falafels or the roasted white sweet potatoes, fresh, nutritious options are waiting to be enjoyed over at CAVA.

Sweeter flavors can be found in the That’s My Jam, a combination of Lillet rose, vodka, lemon and strawberry preserves and garnished with a cucumber peel, as well as the Roasted N’ Toasted, vanilla-infused vodka, Nightrider nitro brew and vanilla almond cream. Humanity In Community

hat is your first reaction when you hear the word “community?” You probably associate it with a warm and fuzzy feeling. You feel a connection — a sense of belonging to something bigger than just you and your family. The word brings about a feeling of support and shared interests. Some might say it’s about unity or oneness, or that it’s about shared values, customs and even religion. You might even associate it with a place such as the town you grew up in or where you went to high school or college. But the meaning of the word community is more complex than that. Today, communities are often diverse, and sometimes the interests aren’t shared, or the goals aren’t quite as common. Global migration has also led to a wide range of communities. Even if people have similar definitions for the word itself, their experiences can differ significantly. Often there are communities within communities — some organized, and some not so much. These communities within communities further refine the purpose of their existence. When I look around in the city of Southlake, I see many of those same communities. Some I am part of, some which I want to be part of and others that don’t have much in common with me or my interests. I feel very fortunate to be part of communities that are welcoming and inclusive, whether it is my gardening community, my own group I started to provide home-baked breads to immigrant families

called The Bread Basket or Dignity For All Texas Students, a group that celebrates and advocates for diversity and inclusion for all students. With social media being ubiquitous, we now have online communities, and just like real-life communities, some are helpful and some may be downright toxic. So how do we build or be part of communities where people build relationships, build trust and positively impact the environment around them? I was born and raised in the very diverse country of India and moved to the United States as an adult. My roots and values define what I seek in a community. I am reminded of the times I was included in religious ceremonies by my neighbors in Mumbai who were of a different faith. I am reminded by the diverse student community in Chicago that gave me a sense of belonging, and I am reminded of the bustling cities I’ve lived in and its diversity in cuisines that shaped my expectations of a community. Most importantly, I am reminded of the humans that impacted my experiences, all anchoring towards perhaps one common value of loving and treating people with kindness. We often hear about unity in community. I think it’s a step even further: It’s the humanity in community. How we build empathy for those that aren’t like us. How we show compassion to experiences we know nothing about. How we bring about belonging with actions or inactions as the case might be and simply, how to live and let live.

home STYLE Set Up Your Desk For Success

W

hether it’s grade school or college, the academic season is around the corner. With endless tests, papers and study sessions on the horizon, it never hurts to prepare. So before you walk into your classes, get ready for the school year by properly setting up your desk.

SOLID FOUNDATIONS You can’t have a successful setup without a quality desk. Those who are more active should invest in a hybrid desk so they can work while sitting and standing. If you have a lot of materials or need extra space, opt for a long or L-shaped desk. Type-A personalities should consider desks that come with built-in storage so they can organize to their heart’s desire. No matter how you work, there’s a desk out there for you. SITTING PRETTY Nothing is worse than getting up after a long day and feeling sore from a not-so-great seat. Prevent this issue by investing in a comfortable desk chair, especially if you work from home or plan to spend more than an hour at your desk at a time. Some things to consider when choosing a desk chair include whether you want it to have arms, how ergonomic you’d like it to be and, of course, how it fits into your home design-wise. If you plan to spend hours at your desk, consider investing in a plush yet supportive option. It may be expensive, but you’ll be grateful after a long study session. TOOLS OF THE TRADE Get prepared by equipping yourself with the right tools, from office supplies to organizing accessories. Besides pencils and pens, a file folder organizer, either on top of or next to your desk, can help cut down on the piles of paper and ensure nothing gets mixed up. A separate monitor is also beneficial; along with allowing you to work on multiple things at once, it helps keep your computer screen organized. Whether you decide to go big with tech accessories or start small with office supplies, make sure you have the tools to succeed.

Checking Out Popular College Campuses See Where Dragons Pursue Higher Education

E

very school year brings new challenges, expectations and aspirations for students. Many high schoolers have their eyes on the horizon, already planning where they will study after graduation. If you’re a Carroll parent or future graduate who needs help with their college search, here are a few campuses that are most populated by Dragons, according to Carroll ISD’s Niche profile.

University of Texas at Austin

There’s a reason why Longhorns dominate the top of the list for Carroll graduates. Established in 1883 in the heart of Austin, the University of Texas has built a reputation

as one of the best public colleges in the country, consistently ranking among the Top 10 campuses in Niche and U.S. World And Report. The 431-acre campus has 150 buildings dedicated to more than a hundred areas of study, with its accounting, business and engineering programs being among the most popular. The LBJ Presidential Library has more than 45 million artifacts stored inside, and the Perry-Castañeda Library holds nearly 8 million volumes and is the fifth-largest in the country. And Longhorn games are literally made explosive thanks to Smokey, a replica Civil War artillery cannon that fires off every time the Longhorns score — which is, suffice to say, a lot. UTexas.com

BOARDINGPASS university life Texas A&M University in College Station

If Austin isn’t your scene, Aggieland is always welcoming. Founded in 1876, Texas A&M University is one of the oldest universities in the Lone Star State. With more than 70,000 students enrolled, Texas A&M University has the largest student body in Texas and the second-largest student body in the nation. As a Senior Military College, Texas A&M is one of six universities with a full-time Corps of Cadets. It is the only university in Texas to be designated as a land, sea and space grant institution with more than 150 courses of study, and the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum preserves more than 4 million artifacts and photographs. But its crowning achievement lies in Kyle Field, its 100-yearold football stadium that can seat more than 100,000 fans, making this gem the largest stadium in Texas and the fourth largest in the nation. University of Oklahoma in Norman

Students like to say that the University of Oklahoma is full of Sooner Magic, and it isn’t hard to see why. Established in 1890, the crimson and cream-colored campus resembles the residential patterns of Harvard, Yale and Oxford, and has been named among the Top 10 most beautiful historical campuses by College Values Online. With 170 academic programs offered across 18 colleges, the University of Oklahoma is one of 34 public institutions to achieve a 90% retention rate and has earned the Carnegie Foundation’s highest classification as a Research I university. Eight of its programs rank among the top 10 nationally, including meteorology, petroleum engineering, energy management, musical theater, ballet, international business, entrepreneurship and journalism. Its athletics program is even more notable, with its 19 men’s and women’s varsity teams winning 39 national championships and ranked the third-best college sports program by “Sports Illustrated.” But that’s Sooner Magic for you. University of Arkansas in Fayetteville

Home to the Razorbacks, the University of Arkansas was founded in 1871 as the first public university of the Natural State. The oldest building on campus is Old Main on Campus Drive, which was built in 1875 and is now home to the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. The Futrall Memorial Hall is another historic relic on campus, built in 1940 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. And just up Maple Street is the Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium, which can host up to 76,000 people during football season. Ranked among the top 3% of colleges in America, the University of Arkansas offers more than 200 academic programs ranging from architecture to agricultural law, with its supply chain management program ranked first in the nation. And with the Senior Walk stretching throughout the campus, your achievements will always be etched in stone along with the other 200,000-plus alumni who graduated from the university. UArk.edu
