All the Best Welcome to our annual “Best Of” edition! This issue (our largest of the year) is jam-packed with 49 of our favorite moments from 2016. We revisit everything from grand openings and milestone anniversaries to plays with funny names and the mayor’s many shoes. On the heels of a heated election season, a fun look back is definitely in order. In this issue, you’ll also find some of the area’s “Best Of” businesses, as deemed by Southlake Style and our readers. Flip through and see what your friends and neighbors have to say about these local standouts—you might even find a gift idea or two. Our city had plenty of “Best Of” moments this year, and, cue the streamers and confetti, Southlake Style celebrated a milestone—a decade in print! Ten years and 139 issues later, this publication is enjoyed by tens of thousands of readers every month. (And I bet it graces almost as many coffee tables, too!) According to a recent readers’ survey, nine out of 10 say Southlake Style is better or much better than other local magazines. We hope, like those bottles of fine wine you’re pouring this holiday season, we’re only getting better with age. Improving and striving for excellence each year is exactly what Dr. David Faltys does in his role as superintendent for Carroll ISD. This year, he reached a significant milestone: 10 years leading the Dragons to new heights. When it comes to having a lasting impact on Southlake and its schools, there’s nobody quite like Dr. Faltys. He’s undoubtedly a deserving recipient of our eighth-annual Community Impact Award. Turn to page 20 to celebrate our superintendent extraordinaire. It’s the most wonderful time of the year, so be sure to find time to sip some hot cocoa (it’s our readers’ favorite holiday beverage) and admire the twinkling lights … when you’re not scrambling to reposition your elf on the shelf. Wishing you all the best this Christmas season!

Happy reading,

BLUE & LONESOME THE ROLLING STONES DECEMBER 2

Back to the Blues The Rolling Stones’ first studio album in more than a decade, Blue & Lonesome, was recorded in just three days in West London. A passion for blues music has always been at the heart and soul of The Rolling Stones, and the sound of the new album reflects this passion. Produced by Don Was and The Glimmer Twins, the album was recorded at British Grove Studios, close to Richmond and Eel Pie Island, where the band started out as a young blues band playing pubs and clubs. The album’s 12 tracks pay homage to the sounds of their early days and feature the songs of Jimmy Reed, Willie Dixon, Eddie Taylor, Little Walter and Howlin’ Wolf.

TOM CLANCY, TRUE FAITH AND ALLEGIANCE MARK GREANY DECEMBER 6

America Under Attack President Jack Ryan is back in the latest installment of the No. 1 New York Times bestselling series from author Tom Clancy. Espionage, assassins and rogue attacks lead into a novel about a massive information breach within America’s military. And it goes downhill from there. The country’s most dangerous enemies have jumped at the chance to use the data breach to uncover American intelligence agents—both on and off the grid. This is no doubt a job for President Ryan, the country’s only hope. Mark Greany is the author and co-author of more than seven Tom Clancy novels.

HAIRSPRAY LIVE! PASSENGERS IN THEATERS DECEMBER 21

Mayday! Mayday! What has become commonplace in their time may seem unfathomable to us. But screenwriter Jon Spaihts (“Prometheus”) has once again taken us to space, which is not so much the final frontier anymore. On board a spaceship and headed to their new home, along with 5,000 other travelers in suspended animation, passengers Jim (Chris Pratt, “Jurassic World”) and Aurora (Jennifer Lawrence, “Xmen: The Apocalypse”) wake up 90 years too early after the ship malfunctions. Jim and Aurora’s reality is they will probably spend the rest of their lives on this ship, and so they fall in love. But just when you think they will drift off happily into the Milky Way, they face another ship dilemma.

CHEER ON DRAGON CHEER AT UIL STATE SPIRIT COMPETITION

YOUNG MEN’S SERVICE LEAGUE PRESENTED “ULTIMATE GIFT” TO AMY’S WISH WITH WINGS A special project was recently underway at Ride With Pride: The newly formed Young Men’s Service League (YMSL) Lakes and Keller chapters presented their first “Ultimate Gift” to Amy’s Wish With Wings, a SpiritHorse therapeutic center that operates out of the Southlake horsemanship school. YMSL, a mother/son service organization, challenges its members to give back to their communities through an “Ultimate Gift.” YMSL mothers and sons—85 from Lakes and 45 from Keller—completed a sensory trail for special-needs riders as part of equine-assisted healthcare called SpiritHorse therapy. It includes 26 alphabet stations, 12 number stations and one massive ride-through dragon. “It made a fitting gift in a town full of Dragons,” says Joan Shockley, YMSL Lakes mom and one of the event organizers. YMSL Lakes and Keller held a trail dedication at Ride With Pride in October.

Get ready to make some noise Dragon Nation: Dragon Cheer is heading to the UIL State Spirit Competition on January 10 and 11 at the Fort Worth Convention Center. More than 300 schools competed last year, and Dragon Cheer rose to the top, finishing in second place after preliminary rounds and bringing home eighth place at state finals. This time, the team is aiming for the top position. They will compete in the 6A division and will have 30 cheerleaders performing game-day material chants and dance. Don’t miss a show-off of their performance and routines closer to home! On January 5 at 6 p.m., Dragon Cheer will perform in the Carroll Senior High auxiliary gym.

SOUTHLAKE RANKS IN TOP 10 BEST SMALL CITIES IN AMERICA There’s plenty to love about living in Southlake, and the latest reason will come as no surprise. Southlake ranks in the top 10 best small cities in America, according to a study by WalletHub, a personal finance website. WalletHub’s analysts compared 1,268 cities with populations between 25,000 and 100,000 based on 30 key indicators of livability ranging from housing costs and school-system quality to number of restaurants per capita. Southlake rose to the top of the list, coming in at No. 10.

CARROLL EDUCATION FOUNDATION AWARDED A RECORD $100,000 IN GRANTS In October, there was a Prize Parade to top them all: The Carroll Education Foundation (CEF) distributed a record 28 teaching grants in the amount of $100,000. Overiszed checks were presented at each school, lead by the Carroll Dragon Drum Line. Since its inception in 1996, CEF has awarded more than $1,345,000 in grant funding.

We caught up with Venkataraman to hear about his experience as a contestant. See our Q&A at SouthlakeStyle.com.

SIX INDUCTED INTO DRAGON HALL OF HONOR CLASS OF 2016 Four former Dragon athletes, a long-time supporter and an administrator have joined the privileged ranks of the Dragon Athletic Hall of Honor’s Class of 2016. This year’s inductees are Ed Beauvais, Sam Booker, Kate EvelandSchierholtz, Dr. Ted Gillum, Mike Uldrich and Chase Wasson. The festivities were held during the homecoming parade in Southlake Town Square and also before the homecoming game, where the Dragons defeated Byron Nelson. New candidates are nominated each year, but only a few are selected by the hall’s committee. The remaining nominees stay on the list indefinitely, while the selected are inducted in the fall. Nominees can be coaches, teachers, administrators, athletes, fans, or booster club members who have contributed significantly to Carroll ISD athletics programs.

CARROLL CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS FINISHED SECOND AT STATE CHAMPIONSHIP The Southlake Carroll Boys and Girls Cross Country teams earned second-place finishes at the Class 6A State Championship in Round Rock, Texas, last month. Renovations to Old Settler’s Park meant the runners had to navigate a new and challenging course, but both the boys and the girls came away with a podium finish. “We are extremely proud of our teams’ efforts at the state meet,” said head coach Justin Leonard. “Even though we came up a little short of the goal, the impact these kids have left will last and carry on for the next generation of Dragon runners.” It was a repeat of last year’s state meet with the Dragon boys coming away with second, behind The Woodlands. Senior Reed Brown came in fourth overall, Nicolas Fernandes finished next for the Dragons in 11th place. The Lady Dragons also repeated last year’s second-place finish. Their team was led by senior Gillian Mortimer who took fourth place, followed by Ali White grabbing 20th.

CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY ON FINAL PHASES OF THE MARQ, BICENTENNIAL PARK November 10 was a day of celebration in Southlake—the City of Southlake hosted two groundbreaking ceremonies to kick off the construction for final phases of The Marq and Bicentennial Park. The 84,000-square-foot Champions Club will include spaces for fitness, performance training, gymnasium, indoor jog/walk track, indoor aquatics, indoor playground, party rooms, child care and multipurpose classrooms for various programs. It’s scheduled to open summer 2018. Phase 3 of Bicentennial Park, an $8.8 million project funded by the Southlake Parks and Development Corporation, includes a new building and enclosed courts for the Southlake Tennis Center, trail system completion, synthetic turf field at current in-line hockey court, landscape and irrigation enhancements, and park amenities enhancements. Certain elements are anticipated to be completed by 2018.

CSHS TEACHER COMMENDED BY HUMANITIES OF TEXAS John Irish, social studies teacher at Carroll Senior High School, is among the best in Texas when it comes to excellence in teaching the humanities. He was named the 2016 Outstanding Teacher of the Year – Humanities by Humanities of Texas, a nonprofit dedicated to educational excellence. Each year, the organization presents 15 awards recognizing and encouraging excellence in teaching the humanities in Texas schools. More than 700 teachers across the state were nominated for the award this year. Irish received a $5,000 prize and an additional $500 to CSHS for purchase of humanities-based instructional materials.

INAUGURAL CES DRAGON GAMES BLASTED PAST FUNDRAISING GOALS Last month, students in Pre-K through fourth grade at Carroll Elementary School sprinted, bounced, slid and maneuvered their way through a student-friendly obstacle course during the inaugural Dragon Games. The fundraising event, sponsored by the PTO in partnership with Camp Gladiator, was designed to help promote self-esteem, character and team spirit. Students collected pledges toward the number of obstacles they would complete at the Dragon Games, with a maximum of 33 obstacles. The goal was to raise $50,000; students surpassed the goal and raised more than $60,000. One hundred percent of the net proceeds will go to student and teacher programs at CES.

WILDWOOD GRILL UNVEILED NEW LOOK, MENU AND WEBSITE Since opening its doors in December 2009, Wildwood Grill has served original recipes, a unique selection of craft beers and cocktails, and its signature wood-fired grill cuisine to patrons at its Southlake location. But just in time for its seventh anniversary, the local favorite restaurant has undergone some transformations—inside and out. It recently unveiled new décor, menu, website and an updated logo that conveys its popular specialties of smoke, whiskey and craft. Co-owner and operator Dave Garner described the redesign as post-Prohibition Era meets southern hospitality. “We felt it was time for an upgrade across the board, but have made sure to keep the heart and soul of Wildwood intact, including our most popular menu items, Texas craft beers and friendly service,” said Garner.

PARK VILLAGE KICKED OFF INAUGURAL PEANUT BUTTER CHALLENGE FUNDRAISER Creamy or crunchy, Park Village will take it all in its inaugural Peanut Butter Challenge benefitting Christmas is for Children. In the campaign, which started November 3 and runs through December 15, Park Village is collecting jars of peanut butter to fill holiday baskets of local families in need. Bring your jars of PB to The Juice Bar and receive a complimentary wellness juice shot. The end goal is 1,500 jars raised—one for each family in the program. All proceeds will benefit Christmas is for Children, a Southlake-based nonprofit that provides holiday experiences to underserved children and families in the Metroplex each year.

POLLO TROPICAL’S FIESTA CAME TO AN END IN SOUTHLAKE After only eight months, Pollo Tropical, the restaurant chain specializing in Caribbean cuisine, closed its doors in Southlake. Its last day in business was October 24. Fiesta Restaurant Group, Inc., the parent company of Pollo Tropical and Taco Cabana, announced that 10 Texas locations of Pollo Tropical have closed and up to three will be rebranded as Taco Cabana restaurants. The decision to close restaurants was based on a restaurant portfolio examination as part of the company’s strategic review process to enhance long-term shareholder value.

Wal-Mart left Southlake months ago, and Holly’s Hallmark is the next to close in the struggling shopping center along Southlake Boulevard and Davis/ Randol Mill. The longtime store, which has served the Southlake community since 1995, will close December 28. Co-owner Rene Zubrowski says construction played a role in the store’s upcoming closure, but it wasn’t the deciding factor. “We’re a family-owned operation, and we appreciate the years of business,” Zubrowski says. “We’ve developed friendships with our customers and employees. We’ll miss serving customers and taking care of their needs.”

SOUTHLAKE TOWN SQUARE RETAILERS JOINED IN PARTNERS CARD CAMPAIGN Last month, Southlake Town Square shoppers could help support The Family Place, Dallas’ largest domestic violence agency, simply by shopping at their favorite stores. Partners Card, the signature fundraiser for The Family Place, allowed shoppers to save 20 percent at participating stores such as Anthropologie, Kendra Scott, Vineyard Vines and Williams-Sonoma. One hundred percent of each purchase of a Partners Card went directly to supporting survivors of domestic violence.

MEAT U ANYWHERE PARTNERED WITH METROPORT MEALS ON WHEELS FOR THANKSGIVING Andy Sedeno, owner of Meat U Anywhere, wanted to make this Thanksgiving a holiday to remember for elderly or ill individuals. That’s why the Trophy Club location of Meat U Anywhere served Thanksgiving meals to participants and families of Metroport Meals On Wheels (MMOW). Founded in 1980, MMOW is a grassroots organization that serves as an advocate for elderly or chronically ill individuals in northeast Tarrant, southern Denton and eastern Wise counties. MMOW, which has provided more than one million meals to seniors since its inception, serves home-delivered and senior center meals to more than 1,000 seniors throughout the region.

THE GINGER MAN JOINED “POUR ONE FORWARD” CAMPAIGN Last month, The Ginger Man in Southlake took part in Samuel Adams’ “Pour One Forward” campaign, which allowed participants to purchase a pint of Samuel Adams redeemable by any soldier or vet at a later date. Cerebrum was our last stop. No one else talks about forging new connections in the brain or knowing how to do it. That’s huge. Cerebrum also looks at the metabolic pieces that could potentially be sabotaging the recovery. It’s one thing to get something diagnosed and you finally have a name, but then when someone also knows a treatment for that, it’s everything. It means the world.” -Real Patient Story At Cerebrum you start by spending 2-4 hours with board certified clinicians who know the right questions to ask because there are often underlying, undiagnosed factors that can slow or prevent recovery. hat makes Southlake great? Ask any number of people and you’ll likely get an array of answers. It’s the people, the ease of living, the great infrastructure and businesses, the beautiful homes, the proximity to DFW and both Dallas and Fort Worth. But the one answer that most every person can agree on in this town is that Southlake’s outstanding school system is a huge part of what makes the community so exemplary. And for the past decade, the man leading the Carroll Independent School District has ensured that the schools here have thrived. That’s why this year, Southlake Style has selected that man, Dr. David Faltys, as the recipient of our eighthannual Community Impact Award.

TAKING DRAGONS TO NEW HEIGHTS Mayor Laura Hill recalls when Faltys was named superintendent and has since had many opportunities to work with him on issues affecting the community and schools. “Dr. Faltys personifies everything that makes Southlake great. He is so much more than our superintendent. David is a committed community leader who believes in Southlake and works every day to do what is best for our future,” says Hill. If the face in the photos accompanying this article look familiar, it’s likely because you’ve seen Faltys at a school or community event. He is, as Julie Thannum, assistant superintendent for board and community relations, says, a “very visible guy” in the district and the city. He’s even active on Twitter, posting in just one week 11 tweets about school accolades and activities— many of which he attended. He’s not only “Head Dragon,” so to speak, but he’s also a Dragon dad. Faltys and his wife, Jennifer, have four children—David, Peyton, Kenton and Lauren—three of whom (Peyton, Kenton and Lauren) are current students in the school district and one (David) who graduated from Carroll Senior High. “My dad is the most selfless, caring and hardworking person I know,” says Peyton. “I am so blessed to have a father who is such an incredible role model and who is so loving and supportive of everything I do.” While he has served as superintendent, Carroll ISD has met all federal requirements at every campus for No Child Left Behind, earned the state’s highest rating of “Exemplary,” won five consecutive College Board AP District Honor Roll Awards and won four consecutive UIL Lone Star Cups for academic, athletic and fine arts success in Texas.

DEC 16 • 21

Under Faltys’ leadership, the district was also able to pass the largest school bond election in CISD’s history, approving $138 million during a statewide funding crisis. And throughout his tenure, the district has earned the state’s top Superior Rating on the Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST). Further, in 2009 the district was named the Corporate Business of the Year by the Southlake Area Chamber of Commerce, and in 2010, Faltys was named Region XI Superintendent of the Year. With such an outstanding record as superintendent, it’s hard to believe that Faltys may not have been in the field of education had it not been for circumstances out of his control.

A FATEFUL CAREER PATH Faltys was born and raised in the small west-central town of Early, Texas, where his father was a maintenance director and his mother was, ironically enough, secretary to the superintendent of the town’s school district. After high school, Faltys left Early to attend Texas A&M to pursue the field of petroleum engineering. As Faltys puts it, though, “1985 was a bad year for petroleum engineering,” thanks to a deepening energy recession that hit especially hard in Texas. Faltys’ counselor suggested instead that he consider teaching as an alternative, and Faltys recalls making the decision to go into education after he realized that it would enable him to impact hundreds of kids. His first teaching job was in the small town of Winters, Texas, where he also served as a coach. He later moved to Bryan and taught for nine years. While there, he pursued a master’s degree from Texas A&M so that he could take on more of a leadership role in education. After receiving his master’s degree, Faltys joined Navasota ISD and served as principal for both the alternative campus and the high school before becoming assistant superintendent there. As he moved up the ranks in the Navasota school district, Faltys continued his education at Texas A&M, earning his Ph.D. Then, in 2006, he was brought on to lead CISD as the superintendent. While the advice he received from community leaders when he came on board was to lay low the first year and get a feel for things, it wasn’t long before Faltys dug in and began to outline and define the principles which have been guiding the students and faculty since he implemented them—the Core Values, as they are called. “I think it will be his legacy,” says Thannum. “He put into motion our core values.” Those values, which Thannum notes every CISD employee can state by heart, include Excellence, Relationships, Character and Integrity, Innovation, Open and Honest Communication, and Compassionate Service.

“D R . FA LT YS PERSONIFIES EVERYTH I N G T HAT MAK ES SOUTHLAKE GREAT.” M AYO R L AU R A H I L L

Faltys knows that he is preparing today’s students for a different future than one he might have envisioned even a decade ago. “I don’t know what a child will need 20 years from now,” he admits. Still, he feels it’s important that “every kid has every door open to them, whatever that door may be.” Faltys also supports two-way communication with the city. Between citizen committees and collaborative and strategic planning with the district, the CISD school board and parents, there is much community input that factors into making decisions that affect the schools. The fact that Faltys has had such a long tenure with the city in a position not known for lengthy tenures is testament to his working well with the community and its leaders. “I believe that one of the things that makes Carroll the outstanding district that we are is the consistent and professional leadership of Dr. Faltys as our superintendent. While the average tenure for a superintendent is about three years, we have been fortunate that Dr. Faltys has served our district, kids and community for

more than 10 years now,” says Christopher Archer, president of the CISD school board. But while his legions of fans in the city point to the many ways he, as the long-serving superintendent, has helped the community, the humble Faltys instead points out the ways Southlake has helped him and his family, most notably a decade ago, shortly after they first moved here. That’s when, in November 2006, his wife was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer, something she continues to fight today. As word spread throughout the community, Faltys and his family experienced firsthand the type of city Southlake is. People in town, many of whom they didn’t even know, rallied together to provide meals and support for the family. Faltys admits that for a five-month stretch, “I did not have to cook or buy a meal. We had a cooler on our front porch and eople would deliver meals to us each day.” “This community,” says Faltys, “took care of us.” But the community might just say it’s the other way around.

BEST COVER-TURNED-PHOTO-OPP Our April cover turned everyone into a bowtie-bedecked, sharp-dressed man. The preppy pastels inspired kids and adults alike to snap a photo with the cover at Art in the Square. Many wore it well, but Christopher Archer, one of our 2016 Tastemakers and the actual cover model, wore it best.

BEST FEEL-GOOD STAT Southlake was ranked as the third-most charitable city in North Texas, behind Colleyville and University Park in first and second place, respectively. Our city’s average annual contribution to charity per household is $1,118.97. BEST USE OF DUCT TAPE When students duct-taped principal Stacy Wagnon to the wall at Carroll Elementary, it wasn’t to demand more recess—it was to kick off the PTO’s spring fundraising event. More than 500 pieces of duct tape were sold at $5 a pop, bringing in more than $2,500 for the PTO. BEST CENTRAL GATHERING SPOT After nearly 20 years in the making, Phase 1 of The Marq Southlake opened in January, becoming our city’s newest destination for everything: weddings, conferences, community movie nights and more. Construction on the 84,000-square-foot Phase 2, Champions Club, is underway now, with completion slated for summer 2018.

Designed to make you smile, think, reminisce or simply enjoy, we hope it was as much fun to read as it was to put together. We bring the department to a close this month on page 38, but you might see a popup installment at SouthlakeStyle.com every now and then!

“The Marq will take your breath away. It’s the icing on the cake for our great city.” Mayor Laura Hill (Jan 2016) BEST CARPOOL When Southlake senior citizens and disabled adults need a ride, Call a Ride of Southlake (CARS) is there. BEST LOVE STORIES In celebration of Valentine’s Day, long-time Southlake married couples shared their favorite memories and wisdom in our feature, “Enduring Love.” For anybody wishing for a lifetime of love, just take it from these sweet couples—they found love, nurtured it and grew it together over the decades. BEST BOOST TO THE ECONOMY Southlake welcomed two massive construction projects this year. The seven-story, 160,733-square-foot Granite Place at Southlake Town Square is expected to bring 400 jobs to Southlake. The Offices at Kimball Park, a 15.5-acre project and $25.5 million building, will combine office, retail, restaurants and a hotel in a walkable, park-like setting. It’s slated for completion in April 2017. BEST WISHES GRANTED Magic was made for two young Dragons when MakeA-Wish Foundation granted their wishes. We hope you enjoyed Disney World, Lucas and Griffin! BEST LOOK BACK This year, Southlake Style celebrated a decade of covering the people, events and achievements that make our community so great. We’ve covered everything from preschool happenings to presidential visits, and we’ve highlighted CEOs and NFL players, fashion and philanthropy, first pitches and first victories. For moments big and small in our city, we’ve been there— covering (and making) memories.

BEST UNSTOPPABLE ATHLETE Limitless ambition: Christopher Tracht has it. This 15-year-old Dragon runner became an amputee before his first birthday, but he doesn’t let anything get in the way of his Olympic-sized aspirations. His prosthesis hasn’t slowed him down; it has only made him reach for higher goals. His next one? The 2020 Paralympics.

BEST COVER-TURNED-COLORING-CONTEST We went interactive with our summer issue—we turned the July cover into a community-wide coloring contest. We asked readers to get colorful and creative, and we sweetened the deal with a gift card to The Ice Cream Place for the winner. (Way to color, Bhavna Reddy!) BEST PEOPLE WITH PANACHE Our annual Tastemakers recognition spotlights those who help make Southlake a first-rate community—and do so with style. Kari Mawn, who puts her special touch on TableTops Southlake, along with all of this year’s Tastemakers, prove that it takes great citizens to make a great city.

BEST TRIBUTE TO A SOUTHLAKE ICON In April, the community gathered at a poignant ribbon-cutting ceremony to unveil the Brian R. Stebbins Memorial Park, named in honor of the late founder and developer of Southlake Town Square who passed away in 2012. BEST GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY This spring, the Southlake Fire Department celebrated 50 years of serving the City of Southlake. The community came together to say thanks and celebrate, and Mayor Laura Hill also proclaimed March 1 as the 50th anniversary for the fire department.

“There’s never really been a time when I thought I couldn’t do anything that other kids could.” Christopher Tracht (Jan 2016)

BEST BEAUTY QUEEN ON A MISSION During her tenure as Miss Southlake, Holly Morgan was more than just a pretty face; she was on a mission to help people embrace their individuality. Her platform was titled “Beautiful You: Shining from the Inside Out.” We have no doubt she’s continuing her uplifting mission as a freshman at BYU Hawaii.

“Growing up, I could ride my bicycle up and down 1709 and go five minutes without seeing a car.” Matt Woolsey (Nov 2016) BEST LADIES AT LUNCH In October, Southlake Style hosted our inaugural Women’s Luncheon at The Marq featuring keynote speaker Kim Garrett. The Tex-Italian watering hole in Park Village brings plenty of hometown flavors and handmade deliciousness to Southlake. BEST CELEBRATION OF FINE ARTS STUDENTS This spring, Carroll Senior High School hosted the inaugural Fine Arts Signing Day for Dragons pursuing a fine arts degree in college. Congrats to the 27 students who participated this year and who are advancing their chosen disciplines at the collegiate level. BEST CHAT WITH LOCAL DADS In honor of Father’s Day, we asked some local dads to describe fatherhood from their perspectives. We talked to a radio personality, weatherman, pastor, school administrator and fire chief. While these men are recognizable in the community by their very different careers, they all share a common thread: They love the journey of fatherhood. BEST MOVIE NIGHTS Nothing says family fun like watching a free flick on a 17-foot LED screen at The Marq! Over the summer, the community enjoyed crafts, popcorn, bounce houses and family-favorite movies such as “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “Norm of the North.”

BEST RED LIGHT DISTRACTION The new Park Village fountain is a stunning spectacle of thoughtfully interwoven music, water and lights. Just be sure to keep your eye on the other lights—the traffic lights—if you’re driving. We’ve been caught admiring a bit too long. (Sorry, car behind us!)

BEST DRAGON SPIRIT

BEST ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT

There’s no better place in Texas for your kids to grow up—Southlake ranked No. 1 on a list of the best cities for Texas families.

What does it mean to be a Dragon? It’s a responsibility that comes with a sense of duty, pride, achievement and excellence—and most definitely some swagger, too.

Carroll Senior High School landed on a prestigious list of the country’s smartest public high schools, coming in at No. 49 out of more than 23,000 across the country.

BEST HIGH-ACHIEVING GRADUATES

BEST INSPIRING YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR

Wongyeong Seong and Nikhil Ravi soared to the top of Carroll’s Class of 2016; they were declared valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively. Seong attends Stanford University and studies human biology. Ravi studies computer science at Duke University.

Trophy Club native Evan Williams may consider himself to be “Kareless,” but this 24-year-old entrepreneur is anything but careless about his business. Since the inception of his apparel brand known as Kareless Original in 2012, a seemingly fleeting idea has evolved into a thriving business.

“To wake up in the morning and know that my kids are on a good path going forward in life— that’s what makes me happy.” Pastor Clayton Reed (Jun 2016) BEST BUDDING AUTHOR AND ILLUSTRATOR Lydia Amstutz and Mateo Gutierrez, both students at Old Union Elementary, wrote and illustrated the book, Mr. Pig and The Turkey On The Road. The students have plans to create an entire series, with the next book, The History of Mr. Pig’s Family, already underway. BEST BOREDOM BUSTERS The summer hit list in our July issue gave readers 22 exciting, unique and compelling activities to break out of the summer doldrums. Our favorite? Swinging from the trees at Go Ape in Plano. BEST STORY TIME For Elizabeth Beamon, books aren’t just part of her job at the Southlake Public Library; they’re a way to personally connect with community members. Affectionately known as “Ms. Elizabeth,” Beamon uses story time to share her love of literature and introduce children to the magic of books. BEST DRAGON GO-GETTER Not just anybody is invited to sing a solo alongside members of the Fort Worth Opera. But not just anybody has a voice like Elizabeth Hick. This singing Dragon is also a noteworthy scholar—she plans to graduate with a total of 12 AP classes in the books. We can’t wait to see what’s next for Hick and our other “Five Ones to Watch.” BEST CONCERT IN THE PARK (VILLAGE) The Gin Blossoms headlined Park Village’s grand opening event in the spring, rocking out with their top hits such as “Found Out About You” and “Hey Jealousy.” (We don’t know about you, but we still knew all the words!)

Southlake STYLE Magazine

BEST SHOW WITH A FLOW Carroll Theatre’s fall production, Urinetown, brought plenty of light-hearted fun and satire, but left the potty humor at the door.

“In Southlake, we hear of a need and we pull together.” Kari Mawn (Apr 2016)

BEST REASON TO SHORTEN YOUR SHOWER Over the summer, the City of Southlake rolled out more than 10,000 smart water meters to help residents track their water usage. Through the EyeOnWater app, citizens have real-time water data at their fingertips—making it all the easier to pinpoint the family member who takes inordinately long showers. BEST 10TH With Phase 2 of Southlake Town Square (everything north of Pottery Barn and east of the post office) celebrating a decade, it seems that half of Southlake turned 10 this year … including us. Not to be outdone … Dr. Faltys, Celebrity Chefs and Coach Hal Wasson also celebrated their 10th this year. Twice as nice … Summer Santa and Carroll Education Foundation rang in 20 years.

BEST GROOMS…MAN BEST ’STACHE FROM THE PAST Feedstore BBQ owner Mike Lafavers and his epic mustache graced our November cover. Though he’s clean-shaven now, Mike may have had the best ’stache in Southlake. So how did he get the perfectly curled handlebar? Our guess is a healthy dollop of product … or barbecue sauce. BEST TWIST ON TRADITION Carroll grad Destiny Rose humbled the larger-than-life Texas homecoming mum tradition through Mumz4Kidz, a program that lets students donate money to feed hungry families instead of purchasing mums. BEST BROTHERS WHO COOK John and Ralph DeVivo are no strangers to fresh, fromscratch food—it was in the family kitchen that the brothers developed a passion for food, a passion that led them through many years in the restaurant industry to now owning and operating three unique eateries in Southlake and Keller.

ADVANCED ENDODONTICS OF TEXAS Exceptional Unfortunately, I’d already had a couple of root canals before my visit to Advanced Endodontics of Texas. In fact, it was one of the previous root canals that developed a problem and had to be redone by Dr. Walsh. As far as root canals go, it was an awesome experience. The procedure was explained thoroughly and completely, there was absolutely no pain, the office and staff made me very comfortable, and the follow up was just outstanding. Augie B.

I Am Very Appreciative I am very appreciative of Dr. Turner calling me personally to explain treatment options and to follow up on how I was doing! Tricia B.

Good Experience I needed an emergency root canal. I got an appointment quickly and the procedure was done after a quick examination. The overall experience was a good one—especially considering I had a root canal. Mark S.

The Entire Staff at Advanced Endodontics Was Wonderful The entire staff at Advanced Endodontics was wonderful, and Dr. Attar is a skilled endodontist. I would recommend them to anyone. Richard M.

Felt at Ease I tend to get very nervous before any procedure, and Dr. Walsh and his team made me feel so at ease. I never thought a root canal could be so effortless! I’m hoping I never need another one but if I do, I know where I’ll be going! Pamela W.

Wonderful Staff The staff was wonderful. The doctor was so gentle. I am phobic about dentists but they all worked to make my experience a very good one. Rene B.

BERKEY’S AIR CONDITIONING, PLUMBING & ELECTRICAL The Plumbers are Wonderful!

This Company is Wonderful!

My whole house started backing up because of a clogged main line. I couldn’t be more thankful for the tech that was able to come out quickly. He was able to clear the line fast and at a very reasonable price. They even offered to call a water removal company so I didn’t have to worry. I will be calling them in the spring for a HVAC tune up also! Amy Clark

This was my first time using Berkey’s, and they were efficient and knowledgeable. I was able to call and get an appointment same day. I will definitely be calling them again! Victoria Robinson

Don’t Worry, Berkey’s is Coming... I must refrain from using the word “pleasure” in recalling the instances that brought Berkey’s to my door, but by the end of each respective visit, I was pleased. Yes, pleased by the courteousness and understanding of the young ladies who took my frantic calls; by the timeliness of the tech’s arrival; and by the professionalism and friendliness of the techs that helped a distraught lady not go completely crazy. Thank you Berkey’s! Sharon Rushing

Incredible Service I have worked with Berkey’s on several occasions over the last six months and have found them to be professional, courteous and knowledgeable. I have used Berkey’s for plumbing, HVAC and routine inspection and maintenance, and each member of the Berkey’s team has taken the time to not only explain the problem but also offer several solutions, and suggest ways to avoid the problems in the future. I have nothing but praise for Berkey’s! Teresa Williamson

BETTER FASTER URGENT CARE Excellent Care

Great Experience

We took our 7-year-old son to Better Faster Urgent Care when he cut open his finger and we knew he would need stitches. Our experience was excellent. We walked straight in and were seen immediately. The facility was extremely clean, the staff was so very helpful and knowledgeable. I have and will continue to recommend Better Faster Urgent Care. Ashley Pape

I went to this facility at the recommendation of my sister-in-law. I had awakened that morning with a nasty throat. I was seen almost as soon as I got there. Everyone that I encountered on staff was very friendly and helpful. The treatment was painless, and I left laughing even though I needed to rest the following day to get well. I enjoyed my experience there and will definitely return. Patricia Pendleton

Excellent Care! Better Faster Urgent Care is one of the best that I have been to. The staff is courteous, efficient and knowledgeable. My wait time was minimal. Very happy with the care I received. Chandra Mapps

Better FastER is the Best! My son went in for abdominal pain. The doctor at Better Faster knew immediately that it was appendicitis. She sent us to the hospital, and that night he had his appendix removed. Because of the fast service and quick response, his appendix did not burst. My whole family has been treated at the clinic, and we have always had great service! I highly recommend it. Angel Shadrick

Fantastic Staff is wonderful and very helpful. Definitely a go-to place for minor things. Braden Hinkle

Diligent and Persistent in Negotiating the Details

When we decided to sell our home, we didn’t know a good real estate person. We drove around continuously and saw open house signs by Nancy Dennis. We contacted her and arranged for a meeting. Within days, a photographer was taking pictures and soon there was a beautiful packet with a wonderful description of our home. She was able to help us get top dollar for our home. Not only is she a great Realtor, but she has also become a really good friend. Chuck and Teresa

BRIGGS FREEMAN SOTHEBY’S INTERNATIONAL REALTY Dona Was Wonderful!

So Very Patient

My husband and I had a great experience working with Dona Robinson to find our first home. She was incredibly knowledgeable about the Southlake neighborhoods, and her patience and expertise in the field made our first homebuying experience something we will always look back on with joy. We both highly recommend her. Ashlyn Damm

Gabriella is incredibly patient. Not only did she help us list and sell our house, but she took charge of our dogs during multiple showings. We traveled extensively during the timeframe the house was on the market, and she enabled me to travel and not worry about my fur babies. She staged the house, more than once, when it looked like the market wanted a different look and feel in the house. Once the house was under contract, she then had the daunting task of finding us a rental until we knew where we wanted to buy. In the last hour, she made time to show us the perfect rental house and here we are today. We will most definitely call her for future home purchases. Kelly Cooper

BRIGGS FREEMAN SOTHEBY’S INTERNATIONAL REALTY We Love Carol!

We Highly Recommend Carol to Everyone!

First off, Carol is amazing! We were relocating from about 30 minutes away with two small children. She was flexible and so helpful while I had a one-year-old and three-year-old at showings with us. What I think we appreciated the most was that she listened to our needs and maximized efficiency by showing us homes that met our needs. She stayed within our budget and only showed us homes that had everything on our list. No time was wasted. We found our dream home within a week or two of first contacting Carol. She also has resources of an excellent lender and efficient title company who made a quick closing possible. The lender was lightning fast and we closed in three weeks! After we closed, she was in contact and checked in to make sure everything was still going smoothly. I recommend Carol to everyone!

Carol was a shining star in our entire moving process! She was sincere and helpful from beginning to end. We valued Carol’s experience and expertise in pricing, staging and marketing our home. We feel that her excellent advertising of our home was a key marketing tool that enabled us to sell our home quickly. I really appreciated her professionalism and felt that she made herself available to us at all times. We also found the perfect home quickly and she helped us buy in a very busy seller’s market. Carol goes above and beyond by continuing to help us even after we moved in with questions about remodeling. We value her friendship and completely trust her opinions. Dee Anne Gie

COMPLETE CARE SOUTHLAKE I Wouldn’t Go Anywhere Else!

Open Late Hours

Recently I visited Complete Care Southlake and was not feeling well at all. I had severe abdominal pain, and within minutes, I was brought back to a room by my nurse Katie. While she took my vitals, my physician, Dr. Peebles, came in and with great care and thoroughness, he began to assess my condition. I was so ill. Within 30 minutes, I was resting comfortably and out of pain, on my way to have a CT scan. Turns out there wasn’t anything too major going on. Complete Care Southlake not only followed up with me by phone the next day, but they sent me a thank-you note. Katie said she was new at my visit, but let me tell you she is a real pro nurse! She wrote a personal message to me and I am so very thankful for such a caring staff. Will I return? Absolutely! Thank you, Complete Care Southlake! Marlo R.

Attended quickly, have enough staff and equipment to diagnose problems thoroughly. Professional staff, good facility, open late hours which really helped in my case. Henry J.

SUNSTONE FIT I Have More Stamina and Vigor Than I Had at 20

Changed My Outlook on Fitness!

Shortly after I retired, my wife and one of her friends who practices yoga conspired to “get me out of the house” by persuading me to attend a Hot Yoga Light class at Sunstone Yoga. When the class ended, I realized how poor my balance was and how stiff my body and joints were. This shock is what brought me back for the second lesson and the third. Now, two and a half years later and shortly after my 70th birthday, I recently completed my 500th class, and I have more stamina and vigor, and generally feel better than I have felt in more than 20 years. Lee

After starting with Sunstone Fit in Southlake, not only am I feeling stronger fitness-wise, but also mentally. Caring for my aging in-laws, I feel that yoga is the secret to living a long life. As we age, we lose our mobility and balance. Sunstone Fit has helped me understand how to take care of my mind and body as I age. The teachers are kind, encouraging and educated on what they do. It is a joy to come and practice here. Everyday I leave with someone saying an encouraging word. It’s like having a life coach cheering you on! April

Sunstone Fit is My Passion! When I joined a couple years ago, I was looking for a great workout to get toned. In a fairly short time, I not only noticed I was becoming more toned, but I also felt I truly belonged there because of the wonderful friendly instructors and fellow yogis. It felt like family. Sunstone is just downright amazing! Renae

James Keoughan

BRIGGS FREEMAN SOTHEBY’S INTERNATIONAL REALTY

I Know That We’ll Use Him Again in the Future James helped us find the perfect house for our first home purchase. He was patient and worked with us given our crazy schedules. We learned a lot from James on how the process works, and he shared with us his personal insight and knowledge about what can be done with the home and what it would require to fix things found during the inspection process. He knew exactly what we should offer in order for our contract to be chosen. Given the high demand of homes in the market, he made sure that we got the one we absolutely knew we wanted. He's a great guy and I know that we’ll use him again in the future.

James Always Went Above and Beyond James was fantastic throughout the process of selling our home. He even handled a lot of the work usually done by the buyer’s agent, who had left the country for a prolonged period of time. James always went above and beyond and was the consummate professional! Highly recommend!

ISLE AND LANDING AT WATERMERE Best Place Ever

Feeling of Peace

We moved my 92-year-old grandmother to The Landing at Watermere. I was told by doctors that she had 10 days to 10 weeks to live as she wasn’t eating and had no desire to get out of bed. After only six weeks at The Landing, she was gaining weight, participating in activities and making friends. The nursing, rehab and programming staff at Watermere is by far the best I have seen. I highly recommend Watermere.

I was not a fan of my mom moving to what I considered an “old folks home.” Boy was I wrong. The Landing at Watermere has been anything but. My mom is very active and has always been a social butterfly. She can’t seem to find anything that she doesn’t enjoy. I can’t remember a time when my mom was this happy. Ginger Sanders

offee is the best part of waking up, but there are countless ways to brew it: French press, softbrew, percolator. Your morning cup of joe has come a long way from the classic Mr. Coffee on the kitchen counter. But when you crave more than just a quick jolt of caffeine, you might be tempted to head to your favorite coffee shop. Let the barista pour that perfect flat white or espresso, right? Not anymore. With the Jura E8 Automatic Coffee Center, your kitchen becomes your own personal coffeehouse. The Jura E8 is inspired by the world’s best baristas and allows you to achieve coffee nirvana without leaving home. So go ahead—keep those slippers on. Featuring bean-to-cup freshness, this sleek countertop coffee center is equipped to prepare 12 different café-style drinks at the push of a button. It’s designed with Jura’s cutting-edge Pulse Extraction Process, which allows you to brew specialty coffees with an intensity and breadth of aromas that go far beyond what your standard coffee maker can produce. Ready to try your

hand at a little coffee wizardry? The machine makes it easy to brew the perfect cup thanks to one-touch controls, a multi-level grinder, integrated frother and automatic filter detection. Plus, a bright TFT color display allows you to see what you’re brewing in those early-morning or late-night coffee sessions. Do you love a bold cup but your spouse prefers a milder brew? With eight coffee strength levels, everyone in your family can enjoy a cup fine-tuned to their personal preference. You can even program up to six custom drinks. (How’s that for having something to get excited about in the morning?) The coffee center also features a height-adjustable spout to accommodate a wide range of mug sizes. No detail was overlooked with the Jura E8; every feature was designed to deliver the richest, most aromatic coffee and espresso possible. Fine-foam technology produces feather-light frothed milk, and an Intelligent Pre-Brew Aroma System develops the maximum flavor from any blend or roast of coffee. And thanks to a six-level AromaG3 grinder, you’ll get an optimal grind every time. The coffee center delivers high-quality brews, but it’s not high-maintenance. With integrated rinsing, cleaning and descaling programs, it’s hassle-free to maintain. You can program the switch-off time or turn to energy-save mode to help conserve power. With the Jura E8 Automatic Coffee Center gracing your kitchen countertop, you may never visit a coffee shop again. Your favorite barista will miss you.

Winter Wanderings THREE UNIQUE ESCAPES TO EXPERIENCE DURING THE FROSTY SEASON

W

hen you make plans to get away during the cold months, don’t just settle for a ski lodge and hot cocoa. Although a weekend winter escape could call for snow, it doesn’t have to. You might find just what you were looking for in a quick three- or four-day jaunt this season whether you strap on your skis or not.

Aspen’s Art Scene TheLittleNell.com Located in a remote area of the Rocky Mountains’ Sawatch Range, Aspen just might be the quintessential winter destination in Colorado. Originally settled as a silver-mining town, Aspen has grown up to be quite classy. A little bit artsy and a little bit homegrown, the city has more to offer than just supreme skiing and people watching. Enjoy galleries that feature works of art from all over the world in every media imaginable. And the city isn’t short on dance, music and

78 • DEC 16

theater arts either. Add to your weekend agenda watching a performance by the contemporary Aspen Santa Fe Ballet Company. The artistic side of Aspen flows into the restaurant and hospitality industry as well. Within the community’s only five-star, five-diamond hotel, The Little Nell, you’ll find original abstract works of art by internationally recognized painters, sculptors and photographers. In fact, the hotel has weaved art into its accommodations and dining experiences. Stay the weekend in one of The Little Nell’s six luxury suites—each named for a notable Aspen figure or location— oozing with contemporary charm and lavish amenities. The Roch Suite, named for Swiss mountaineer and skiing champion André Roch, is a 1,250-square-foot, one-bedroom space that includes two stone-clad gas fireplaces, wool carpeting and a steam shower and soaking tub. If looking for a palate-pleasing dining experience to match the hotel’s tone, a guest must only walk to The Little Nell’s signature restaurant, element 47 (as in the 47th element on the periodic table, silver). With a relaxed “Aspen casual” dress code, as locals call it, and a long wine list, the restaurant’s cuisine and atmosphere won’t disappoint.

A Hideaway in the Pacific Northwest AlderbrookResort.com Nothing says spending the weekend sipping coffee in the rain— well, not actually in the rain—than a weekend getaway to Seattle, Washington. But if rain is not your cup of tea, and you’d rather relax in the mountains, the Alderbrook Resort and Spa is surrounded by the majestic Olympic Mountains and sits at the shores of Hood Canal. However, just because your weekend getaway may seem like a mountain retreat, you definitely won’t be roughing it. Alderbrook offers two types of accommodations: guestrooms and cottages. The two-bedroom cottages range from 600 to 650 square feet and include a fully equipped kitchen, luxury linens and a gas fireplace in the living room. Pets are welcome to join the family for the weekend, also. Fresh, local ingredients and seafood make for a great shore-to-table dining experience. The seafood harvested from the Puget Sound and the Hood Canal includes oysters, crab and the like. A weekend of relaxation doesn’t have to stop at sleeping and eating; there are many activities to choose from during your stay at Alderbrook. Golfing, hiking and boating are just a few pursuits worth trying.

Tennessee’s Hidden Inn BlackberryFarm.com In 1976, a Tennessee couple opened their residence, Blackberry Farm, to the public as a six-room country inn. Located in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains of eastern Tennessee, Blackberry Farm has since grown into a 4,200-acre estate complete with a wellness center, three dining choices, a brewery, a wine cellar, a barn and a variety of

Southlake STYLE Magazine

accommodations that far surpass the six rooms offered in ’76. With access to another 5,000 acres of private wilderness, Blackberry Farm is a resort located on a working farm. With the nearest southern city 45 minutes away, a stay at the farm is truly a weekend escape from modern-day life. There doesn’t have to be snow-covered ground for you to enjoy a weekend winter getaway. Trade in your skis for a bow and arrow or a fly-fishing rod. And why warm yourself by a communal fire pit when you can escape to Blackberry Farm’s Deep Healing Woods to experience forest bathing? (Think mental clarity, not soap and water.) There are enough outdoor activities to feed your soul and thirst for relaxation, and there are three restaurants on site to fill your belly. Described as “Foothills Cuisine,” the rugged-meets-gourmet food served at each of the farm’s eateries is the creation of more than just a butcher and baker. A chef, master gardener, cheese maker, forager, jam lady, chocolatier, restaurant manager and sommelier each put their passion behind whatever dish is served. If nostalgia is one of the factors drawing you to Blackberry Farm, the estate rooms are the original inn rooms dating back to the 1970s. Period antiques give each of the rooms a step-back-intime feel. If, however, you are looking for a little more modern luxury, the Hill Cottage accommodations include a screened-in porch complete with rocking chairs, and indoor necessities such as high-speed internet, flat-screen televisions and surround sound for the whole cottage.

Do One Thing and Do It Best THE MANTRA AT EMPORIUM PIES PROVES TO BE A RECIPE FOR SUCCESS

I EMPORIUM PIES 107 S. Tennessee Street McKinney 214.491.1577 EmporiumPies.com

82 • DEC 16

f there’s a universe without pie, then we don’t want to live in it. But if you’ve ever attempted to bake one from scratch, you know how laborious homemade pie can be. And trying to achieve the perfect crust? Well, that’s an art form all its own. Megan Wilkes and Mary Sparks perfected the artistry of pie crafting and peddled their delicious desserts at farmers markets and restaurants in 2011. Within a year, the duo had amassed enough business to open a brick-andmortar bakery in the tony Bishop Arts District in Oak Cliff. In 2013, Emporium Pies’ second location opened in historic downtown McKinney. This fall, they opened a third shop in Deep Ellum. From the looks of things, Emporium Pies might soon become a revolution.

“We opened a shop because we thought it would be a good venue for our community,” Wilkes says. “Where else can you meet a friend or go on a date and eat something delicious for less than $10?” Wilkes says the first location soon became overrun with pie-seeking patrons, so the second shop in McKinney helped spread the business a bit. “We sold out of pies all the time,” she recalls. The response to Emporium Pies has definitely exceeded the business partners’ expectations, but neither one plans to grow too fast, too soon. “We are an owner-operated company and we do it all, so we are committed to ensuring we produce a quality product,” Wilkes says. Sparks develops the recipes while Wilkes focuses on the business side of the counter.

LOCALFLAVOR review While Emporium Pies stocks whole pies for folks to enjoy at home (or in the parking lot—we won’t judge), many customers appreciate the nostalgic experience of sharing a slice of pie over coffee with a friend. “Even if you can find a restaurant that serves good pie, you feel obligated to order a meal, too,” Wilkes says. “Here you can just order pie.” With sweet shops specializing in treats such as cakes, cupcakes, ice cream and gelato, why pie? “Pies are a little challenging to make at home,” says Wilkes. “Pie crust is fickle, so people end up buying it from the grocery store and it’s just not as delicious. We knew we could make delicious pies and revive a lost art.” Plus, who has time to make pies from scratch— especially during the busy holiday season? “Our apple pie takes 12 hours to make from crust to completion,” Wilkes adds, saying she remembers making pies with her grandmother, but her mother didn’t invest the time. Besides the American classic apple pie (aka Lord of the Pies), Emporium Pies has rolled out so many delicious options we can’t decide which to try first. Emporium’s take on pumpkin pie, Drop Dead Gourdgeous, features a gingerbread crust and a spicier custard filling than conventional recipes. Expect the pecan pies here (The Drunken Nut) to have a richer, deeper flavor due to caramelized brown sugar, bourbon and butter instead of corn syrup. Merry Berry features a tartly delicious blend of cranberry and pecan filling over a signature salty crust and topped with a sugar cookie. “We like to say that if a cranberry muffin and a sugar cookie had a baby, it would be this,” Wilkes says. Buttermilk pies are a Texas tradition, so Emporium Pies adds a hint of chai spice and calls its version a Buttermilk Blitzen. And if dessert isn’t dessert unless it’s chocolate, Emporium Pies understands. Try Father Christmas— an icebox pie featuring a chocolate cookie crust topped with peppermint filling and finished with whipped cream with peppermint on top. Because the winter pie menu is the most popular—yet runs the shortest span of time—we suggest getting your orders in early. You can call the shop or order online. If you want to try before buying a whole pie (or a dozen or 100), each location serves pie by the slice and has seating for dining in. “After we open for the day, it’s first-come, first-served,” Wilkes says, “and you might have to wait in line.” Loyal Emporium Pies customers know firsthand that pies sell out, but the experience is worth the wait in line. Emporium Pies has been a part of many special occasions—from holiday meals and weddings to first dates and even engagements right in the shop. “We’ve had couples who had their first dates here, so they came back to get engaged,” Wilkes says. “It’s great to be a part of people’s special times.” Let’s raise a fork to sweet celebrations all year long!

Go Grab Some Crab Craft & Crab is a utopia for seafood-seeking, fun-loving North Texans With fresh seafood, cold craft beer and a place for kids to play, we have a crush on crustacean purveyor Craft & Crab. The 10,000-square-foot restaurant is situated along the ever-busy Highway 121 in Colleyville, but you’ll feel like you’re in a New England crab house as you feast upon crabs and other seafood (and non-seafood) bites. You might expect sophistication and elegance at a Colleyville seafood spot, but Craft & Crab is different. Instead, the space exudes a family-friendly, laid-back vibe. It’s a destination where your whole crew can enjoy a good meal and have some fun, from the boat-themed playground for kids to the corn hole, life-size Jenga and swings at the bar for adults. The restaurant aims to revive family mealtimes, when everyone gathers around the table and digs in. When you order family-style portions, expect a pile of seafood to be dumped on your paper-covered table. The hunger-busting Fried Fisherman—one of the many family feasts on the menu—is a heaping helping of oysters, shrimp, redfish or catfish served with fries and hushpuppies. Pick your feast, then pick from 150 varieties of craft beer or one of the restaurant’s specialty

cocktails (we’re partial to the banana cream rum Mai Tai) to wash it all down. Don’t have your brood with you? Order an individual entrée, which is uniquely served on a disposable palm container made from fallen palm leaves. It’s a cool Caribbean influence—just like the sounds of Bob Marley drifting through the air and the coconut margarita that beckoned us from the bar. On our lunch visit, we dove into the fried shrimp basket after devouring a satisfying house salad. There are shrimp—and then there are the titans that come forth from Craft & Crab’s kitchen. These mammoth, lightly battered beauties will fill you right up. We also polished off the steak fries and small dish of coleslaw, which made nice accompaniments to the shrimp. The menu is seafood-skewed but offers plenty for land lovers, too, from rotisserie chicken and barbecue pork to corn dogs and mac and cheese for the kids. Whether you grab a spot on the massive patio or enjoy your feast in the dining room, there’s not a bad seat in the house. Inside, every wall is plastered with HDTVs, so you can grab a pint of craft suds and not miss a minute of college football. For the quintessential crab house experience without venturing far from the bubble, Craft & Crab is the place to go. Be sure to put it on your (galvanized) bucket list this month.

A Latte to Love TRIO Craft Coffee serves up deliciousness one cup at a time A great cup of coffee—or tea or cappuccino—is delicious any time of year, but cooler temps make you hanker for a hot mug you can wrap chilly hands around and lean over the aromatic warmth wafting toward your face. Carlos and Susan Palacio, owners of TRIO Craft Coffee, share a passion for java and people, which led to their pursuit of a local specialty coffee shop. After marrying in 2012, the Palacios determined their mission: to serve their community and deliver incredible coffee. “We wanted to take something ‘common’ and ubiquitous and unearth the best possible results,” Susan says. The couple met in Guatemala, where Susan was serving as a missionary and Carlos was on a short-term trip. A native of Mexico City, Carlos lived there and in Columbia before moving to the United States over 20 years ago. “His heritage plays a large role in our love for and desire to serve excellent coffee,” Susan says. “He remembers drinking coffee even as a little kid.” Susan has always been a coffee lover, too, but her appreciation for the craft has evolved exponentially over the past five years. Together

they have unearthed the best possible product the coffee bean can deliver. TRIO Craft Coffee takes its name from a few sources—master coffee tasters take three sips when assessing flavor, and local coffee houses represent that third gathering spot in addition to work and home. For the coffee at TRIO to be exceptional every time, three elements come into play: water, beans and barista. The result? High-quality coffee and an aspiration to elevate coffee brewing to a culinary art and not just a commodity. Oak Cliff Coffee Roasters and Novel Coffee Roasters provide the beans behind the brews. “We have purposefully partnered with local roasters who are doing an excellent job and consistently providing the highest quality beans,” Susan says. “Each season we infuse unique ingredients with coffee and tea to provide our customers with something different from our standard menu.” This fall, expect Autumn Spice Latte, Mexican Salted Caramel Cappuccino and other seasonal delights. While good coffee and teas are certainly worth the drive to TRIO, the mouthwatering pastries, delivered fresh from Zenzero Bakery in nearby Coppell, and gluten-free offerings from Pinch of Salt Pastries, plus hot sandwiches will keep you coming back for more. Consider TRIO a one-stop coffee shop for flavorful pick-me-ups and tasty options to warm you from the inside out.

A Musical Extravaganza Prepare for a flurry of lasers and magical crescendos from the legendary Trans-Siberian Orchestra

I

f you have never seen Trans-Siberian Orchestra live, you won’t want to miss this year’s production! The Christmas rock sensation is descending on Dallas’ American Airlines Center for two shows on December 22 at 3:30 and 8 p.m. for a Christmas spectacular of symphonic metal with an unforgettable light and laser show. The orchestra, which formed in 1996, has sold more than 10 million albums and has been seen live by over 10 million people over the past 20 years. TransSiberian Orchestra is considered one of the top 10 ticket-selling bands of the new millennium. With a marriage of classical and rock sounds, the orchestra, which originally planned to play rock operas, has become known worldwide for their incredible Christmas albums and live shows. This year’s tour, The Ghosts of Christmas Eve, promises to be phenomenal.

Founder of Trans-Siberian Orchestra Paul O’Neill says, “We have two stages—with pyro, light and lasers—on both sides of the arena, as well as in the crowd and the best sound we can find. There are no second-class seats at a Trans-Siberian Orchestra show. I want people to walk out of our shows speechless and still not believing what they have seen was possible.” At press time, tickets were still available for both shows, ranging in price from $37.50 to $77.50, but who knows how long they will last? Act now to make this Christmas season the most unforgettable one yet.

SS NEXT DOOR

A DESERVING HONOR DETECTIVE CORPORAL ROBERT BRIGGS IS CELEBRATED BY THE SOUTHLAKE POLICE DEPARTMENT Robert Briggs has another shining accolade to his name: recognition as the Southlake Police Department’s Officer of the Year. Detective Corporal Briggs started with the Southlake PD in 2003 and also has 13 years of military service, including multiple state assignments and a tour in Afghanistan. Get to know this Texas Rangers-loving family man who takes great pride in getting to serve with the Southlake PD. How does it feel to receive the honor? I’m incredibly grateful and honored given the amount of great people I work with. What motivates you to get up and go to work each day? Many things motivate me: the people I work with and the relationships we have, the people I serve and the appreciation they display. What motivates me the most, though, is my family and the love for what I do. Tell us a little about your background. I was born in California but grew up in the Fort Hood area. When I was nearing my high school graduation I decided to enlist in the Army Reserves. I hit 13 years this past September. Give us an idea of your current duties and responsibilities. At the Southlake Police Department, my primary position is corporal for the Criminal Investigations Division. With that position, I am responsible for assisting with the supervision of the division’s detectives. I am also currently in charge of training one of our new detectives. In addition, I am also a member of the North Tarrant Regional SWAT team and Southlake Honor Guard. What do you find most rewarding about what you do? The pride my family has in me for doing this job. You’ve received numerous commendations and decorations. Is there one that has special significance for you? The Bronze Star Medal I received while deployed in Afghanistan is most special to me. What do you consider your greatest achievement? My family; they are an ongoing, ever-rewarding achievement. I’m extremely blessed to have my wife and two kids. They are amazing. Tell us a little about your family. What do you enjoy doing together? My wife is an excellent accountant. She and I met in Germany while serving in the military together, and we got married in 2009. My son is almost two and loves playing catch. My daughter is four and loves watching Disney movies and reading.

Traveling is our favorite thing to do as a family. We try and take at least one trip every year. Aside from traveling, how do you spend your leisure time? A typical day off for me is spent with my family. What we do depends on the time of year and the weather. During baseball season, we like going to Texas Rangers games. We’re also Fort Worth Zoo and Children’s Museum members, and I like running and playing golf when I get the chance. What’s something about you that might surprise people? It is on my bucket list to see the Rangers play in all 30 Major League ballparks. So far, we’ve been to Fenway, Wrigley, Kaufman, Angel’s Stadium, and of course, Globe Life. Five down, 25 to go! That’s an ambitious goal! What’s your best memory from a Texas Rangers game? My favorite memory, by far, was being at the ballpark with my wife for game six of the 2010 ALCS. I’ll never forget how loud the crowd was when Neftali Feliz struck out Alex Rodriguez, sending us to the World Series for the first time. I just remember noise, confetti and fireworks. It was awesome. What’s your favorite game-day snack? You can’t have a game-day party or tailgate without chips and dip. What’s something on your Christmas wish list this year? My Christmas list is pretty much the same every year. Since we live in Texas and our family is spread out, I always wish for a white Christmas and the whole family being together under one roof. Anything else you’d like to mention? I want to thank the Southlake community for the outward gratitude they have shown our police department over the past couple of months. From handshakes to baked goods, it has all been uplifting. I would also like to thank the Southlake Rotary. My family and I appreciate everything they did for us during this year’s National Night Out.
