As 2015 draws to a close and I look back on our annual Best Of list (see page 45), I can’t help but become even more excited for the future of our city. For months, we have been witness to some major improvements, most notably at Bicentennial Park—the city’s most central park. Although still under construction, the bulk of my excitement is a result of all that is already completed across Southlake’s parks and recreation landscape. Thanks to a Parks Renaissance over the last two decades, Southlake now has more than 20 different parks and recreation facilities totaling more than 1,200 acres of athletic fields, playgrounds, trails and ponds. From the Bob Jones Nature Center to the Southlake Tennis Center, there are hundreds of ways to spend quality time and take in a breath of fresh air with family and friends. Research shows that cities with thriving parks are safer. That’s because dedicated green spaces are frequent gathering places for a well-connected community. Such a community looks after itself and protects what it has built. There are also commercial benefits to these communal spaces, which create new jobs and greater opportunities for economic growth and development. The simple fact that well-maintained parks contribute mightily to community pride and fiscal sustainability was never lost on any of our community leaders. Former Mayor John Terrell told us as he left office this past May, “Our parks system is one of the best in the state, and when complete, Bicentennial Park will represent one of the finest parks in the Southwest...” Terrell would also be the first to tell you that he was but a part of a larger team of leaders and volunteers who helped shape our city. However, from 1999 through 2015, the majority of our Parks Renaissance, Terrell’s leadership had an immense impact on the parks system, and thus, the quality of life we all hold so dear. It is for this reason, and many others that we are acknowledging him as Southlake Style’s 2015 Community Impact Award recipient. Patience and persistence pay off, and whether it’s an elementary choir performance at the Senior Center, a concert on the lawn at The Marq, or watching kids play baseball, before long, young, old and all of us in between will make our way to enjoy the everexpanding amenities of Bicentennial Park—Southlake’s first and finest park.

CARROLL CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS TOOK SECOND PLACE AT STATE The Southlake Carroll Boys and Girls Cross Country teams earned second place finishes at the Class 6A State Championship in Round Rock, Texas, last month. Despite rain, wind and mud making the already difficult course at Old Settler’s Park even more challenging, both the boys and the girls came away with a podium finish. Head Cross Country Coach Justin Leonard said in a press release, “Our boys and girls ran as hard as they possibly could today and came up a little short of our goal. Even though we didn’t reach our goal, I’m still proud of the way they competed and their strong finish to the season. Our goal is to work hard and aim high and we will regroup and get ready to come back next season and leave it all on the course again. I would like to thank our seniors for the leadership and dedication to the program over the past four years.” SECOND ANNUAL TABLETOPS SOUTHLAKE A SUCCESS The Southlake Hilton was the setting for the second annual TableTops Southlake event last month. The fundraising event featured beautifully decorated tables, a reception-style lunch and silent auction. The event benefitted Grapevine Gatehouse, a new supportive living community where women and children in crisis receive safe refuge. Proceeds will be used to purchase gifts for children and women at Gatehouse.

LIBERTY CHRISTIAN STUDENTS PLACED SECOND IN WORLD SOLAR CHALLENGE It was the adventure of a lifetime for some students at Liberty Christian School. The school’s Solis Bellator (Sun Warrior) team competed in the World Solar Challenge this fall, finishing in second place in the Adventure Class. Not only did this team accomplish a mammoth task by trekking across Australia from North to South in a team-built solar car, but they boast having the youngest team member ever to compete in the World Solar Challenge. Freshman Austin Hunt is 14 years old. The team was also one of only three high school teams joining the ranks of global teams and universities such as MIT, Stanford, Cambridge and University of Michigan (who came in fourth behind two Dutch teams and one Japanese team). The two other high school teams were from Japan and Houston, Mississippi. For more information and final rankings, visit WorldSolarChallenge.org.

PRIMROSE SCHOOL OF SOUTHLAKE, PRIMROSE SCHOOL AT HIDDEN LAKES HELD CHARITY DIAPER DRIVE Rosemary and Josh Briggle, Owners of Primrose School of Southlake and Primrose School at Hidden Lakes, saw a need in the community and stepped in to help. Their schools recently hosted a two-week-long diaper drive, bringing in nearly 13,000 diapers for Captain Hope’s Kids, a nonprofit that helps meet the critical needs of homeless children. The organization donates approximately 16,000 diapers a week, making it the largest supplier of diapers to homeless shelters in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. “We hope to exceed our number the next time around, however, the volunteer who picked up the diapers said it was the biggest single donation he had ever seen,” said the Briggles. “We’re very proud of all of our Primrose families for their generosity and compassion.”

BEST OF 2015 BEST UP-AND-COMER Southlake-based singer and songwriter, Cole Wilkinson, strummed his way into the hearts of millions on NBC’s The Voice. Though he didn’t get any of the judges’ chairs spinning during the Blind Auditions, Wilkinson is hardly done. His goal is to move to Los Angeles when he turns 18 and score a record deal. Lofty goals—but something tells us he’s got just enough talent and tenacity to get there.

BEST SUMMER SIPPABLES A tall glass of water has its place, but when summer rolls around, sometimes what you really need is a well-crafted, refreshing cocktail. THE AREA’S GROWING GROCERY SCENE + RETHINKING THE RESOLUTION + MEDICAL SUCCESS STORIES

SOUTHLAKE STYLE

BEST OF

BEST BEHIND THE WHEEL School bus drivers in Southlake come from all different walks of life. While many other districts employ drivers who made a career of it, our city is different. Explains one driver: “We are a bunch of people from different backgrounds who all happen to enjoy driving school buses post-retirement.” BEST LAST WORDS Our former Foodie Fellow, James Reid, penned his final review, wrapping up his monthly column for us to pursue his food-blogging career. For 18 months, he gave our readers a first look at some of the Metroplex’s best new dining establishments. Thanks, James, for piquing our curiosity and our appetites. BEST REMINDER TO BE KIND Our story on random acts of kindness brought many inspiring dogood tales to the forefront, including GRACE’s Acts of Kindness cards and volunteers dropping off fresh fruit with Meals on Wheels. It was certainly a reminder of how we all can bring more warm fuzzies into the world, one random act of kindness at a time. BEST GROCERY SCENE If only Southlake had a few good grocery stores. Mark that under phrases you’ll never say. By February, our city had a virtual cornucopia of specialty and natural-foods grocers (and likely the highest kale per capita) thanks to Central Market, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, The Fresh Market and Sprouts. SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

BEST TEAR-JERKER MOMENT We tend to get a little misty-eyed reading through submissions in our decade-old Best Mom essay contest. This year’s winning submission was no different. Karly Weigl along with her siblings, Ryan, Cheylee and Royce, wrote about their mother, KC: “Thank you for the hugs and kisses when we were born and the ‘final goodbye’ hugs and kisses when we went off to college. On this Mother’s Day, we say ‘thank you’ mom for loving us unconditionally and reminding us to smile and laugh each day because tomorrow is not guaranteed.” Tissue, anyone? BEST DROOL-WORTHY DESSERTS Our February feature, “Gallery O’ Glazes,” was packed with all kinds of good stuff: Coffee liqueur-dipped ladyfingers, warmed dark chocolate cake, fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies. The way to our heart, though, is the scratch-made key lime pie at Winewood Grill. It’s light and fresh with just the right amount of sweet zing. DEC 15 • 27

BEST OF 2015 BEST PLACE TO GRAB A BURGER There’s no shortage of great burger joints in Southlake, but the hometown favorite is Johnny B’s Burgers and Shakes. This family-owned and operated restaurant proves that simplicity still reigns supreme. When John Finlayson opened his namesake burger joint in 2003 with his wife Sandi, they set out with the simple motto to be the hometown cheeseburger place. Mission accomplished.

BEST BRAIN FREEZE The frozen concoctions are flavorful and fun at HipPop, an all-natural popsicle, slush and shaved ice joint in Grapevine. Flavors on the menu include Busta Lime (Jalapeño Cucumber Lime) and Insane in the Membrane (Mango Habanero). HipPop even created Dragon Pride pops for our 10th-annual tailgate.

BEST NEW BOUTIQUES (E.Leigh’s Contemporary Boutique pictured above.) Southlake Town Square is home to world-class shopping, and we can’t get enough of two boutiques new on the scene: E.Leigh’s Contemporary Boutique and Kendra Scott. We love E.Leigh’s for its chic, on-trend styles and friendly service, and when it comes to jewelry, every woman should own an iconic piece from Kendra Scott. We have the Elle earrings in more than a few colors.

BEST SHOCKINGLY SMART STUDENT Few of us can even fathom achieving a perfect score on the SAT, but 16-year-old Nikhil Ravi of Carroll High School did it. After strenuous practice, Ravi, 15 at the time, took the exam in October 2014. The results came in two weeks later and the rest is history.

BEST KICK-BUTT COUPLE Melissa and Mark Page are many things: husband and wife, business partners and fitness fanatics who turned their love for staying in shape into a successful business venture. The two opened ZYN22, a boutique that offers a little bit of dance, a little bit of cycling and a whole lot of fun. Melissa works with her team of former Emerald Belles to spin people into shape all over the Metroplex.

BEST FAMILY SUCCESS STORY The name Claffey is synonymous with pools. Recognized as the fifth largest pool company in the country, Claffey Pools is the family-owned business that has served Southlake and beyond as the go-to experts for not only pools but the entire outdoor living experience. The family continues to build on their father’s original motto: “Quality is our commitment to you.” BEST EXAMPLE OF STEPPING UP While stopped at a red light in Southlake, something caught former Army paramedic Aaron Kreag’s attention. A man was assaulting his female passenger in the car next to him. Kreag’s wife called 911 as Kreag exited the car and yelled for the man to stop. When the man stepped outside the car, Kreag drew his .45 caliber gun and held the man at gunpoint until police arrived to secure the scene. BEST FIRST CONCERT Taylor Swift came to town in September, and is it just us, or was everyone at AT&T Stadium? Although we couldn’t find a Blank Space in the crowd, it was fun to Shake It Off with hordes of other Swifties. The Dallas stop of The 1989 World Tour was indeed a pop-infused event we were glad to experience.

BEST OF 2015 BEST TACO BREAK If you have a craving for authentic Southern California tacos but you can’t swing a trip to Long Beach, just jet over to So-Cal Tacos in Grapevine. The place is vibrant and fun with a menu that’s big on Mexican-food favorites like burritos and quesadillas. We love the Gamechanger (a honey chipotle grilled salmon taco), and if we’re in a really gnarly mood, we’ll get it Cali-style and stuff it with fries.

BEST LEADING LADY Laura Hill made history this year as Southlake’s first woman mayor. She’s been a civic leader for more than a decade, and she’s also a successful businesswoman; Hill is the co-owner of Downey Publishing and Texas Ice Cream. She has racked up numerous accolades, and now she’s focusing on creating the very best version of Southlake.

BEST LEADING MAN The first role Carroll Senior High School student Drew Brown remembers playing required him to be dressed up in a giant pizza costume. He’s come a long way – most recently as the lead in Carroll Theater’s “Young Frankenstein.” We named Brown one of our “Five Ones to Watch,” and he hasn’t disappointed.

BEST INSPIRING M.D. Everybody loves a heart-warming medical story. So we were happy to introduce you to Robert (Dr. Bob) Owens, M.D., a Southlake otologist and neurotologist who works with both adults and children with complex ear problems. He performs more than 700 ear surgeries each year, many of which are life-changing for pediatric patients. Some of his patients have even gone on to shine in the spotlight. Madi Davis, a talented singer featured on NBC’s The Voice, worked with Dr. Bob for years.

BEST NEW DIGS Southlake Town Square’s first condominium project, The Parkview Residences, was launched in late June of this year and is already 35 percent sold. The development provides homeowners with a lock-and-leave lifestyle in the vibrant center of one of the state’s most desirable communities. BEST BRAGGING RIGHTS Southlake just keeps topping the charts. Our fair city is one of only seven Texas suburbs to make Business Insider’s prestigious annual list of best suburbs in the country, coming in at No. 17 out of 50 ranked ’burbs. Southlake is also the No. 1 place for finding a job (Keller and Colleyville made the top 10 list as well), and ranks first as having the highest annual median income, according to WalletHub.

BEST NFL CONVERSATION We caught up with DeMarcus Ware, the six-foot-four, 258-pound defensive end who spent nine seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, to talk about life on and off the field. We got his thoughts on Jerry Jones, and we learned that although Ware is a powerhouse on the field and in the gym, he has a soft spot for his kids. If his daughter wants to have tea time, you can bet Ware is raising up his pinky and clinking a teacup.

BEST REMINDERS OF CHRISTMASES PAST JUST FOR FUN, WE ROUNDED UP FIVE VINTAGE TOYS TO PUT SOME NOSTALGIA IN YOUR HOLIDAY SEASON.

LEGO STAR WARS MILLENNIUM FALCON As if there was any question a Star Wars item was going to top our list. The three-foot-long toy with more than 5,000 pieces is a majestic tribute to Han Solo’s famed warship. Bids on eBay top $4,800 as of press time. VERTIBIRD Before drones, there was the VertiBird, Mattel’s line of toy helicopters. We remember happily flying the little helicopter around a central hub, swooping down to pick up a stray object (sock, coin, younger sibling) in its flight path. LITE-BRITE Aside from the little pointy pegs just waiting to be stepped on, we always enjoyed making light-up works of art on the Lite-Brite. Hasbro released the toy in 1967, and over the years has included patterns for Scooby-Doo, Darth Vader, My Little Pony and other pop-culture faves. ETCH A SKETCH When the Etch A Sketch was first unveiled at the 1959 International Toy Fair, it was a total flop. Fast forward a year, and the mystical drawing toy was one of the most-requested toys of the holiday season. It’s still a beloved classic nearly 60 years later. ROCK ’EM SOCK ’EM ROBOTS The Rock ’Em Sock ’Em Robots, one red and one blue, first engaged in battle in 1964, and they’re still duking it out today. Players control the action in the boxing ring, throwing punches until the head of one of the robots pops up, marking the end of the round. Physical aggression has never been more fun.

BEST REPEAT PERFORMANCE The Dragons did it again. Carroll won its fourth consecutive UIL Lone Star Cup, making it the first in history to win the newly formed Class 6A division. It’s just another example why #ExpectExcellence is more than a hashtag. BEST AL FRESCO DINING When the weather is nice, you can find us mingling over lunch at our favorite patio hotspots. There are plenty in the area – whether you want to catch some fresh air during brunch with the family or find a romantic spot for date night. We gravitate toward the patio at Brio come lunch hour. There’s always a nice breeze, great views, and of course, to-die-for food like the Shrimp Mediterranean. BEST GOOD-GUY GOLFER PGA Pro Ryan Palmer is a world-class golfer with a heart for giving back to kids. He started the Ryan Palmer Foundation in 2003, and its “Birdies 4 Brighter Smiles” initiative raises funds for young kids to receive proper dental care. He says: “I feel blessed to give to these kids. It puts the biggest smile on my face, and most importantly, it gives the kids something to smile about.” BEST INVESTMENT FOR A RAINY DAY To anyone contemplating buying a lakefront property, the prevailing sentiment is to come on in – the water is fine. This year saw the most drastic changes in water levels, with 35 trillion gallons of water flowing into the region’s lakes in May alone. Lakes throughout central and North Texas are ranked among the prettiest in the country, though owning a slice of Texas utopia comes with unique charms and challenges.

The Dragons have won five consecutive state championships, while the Lady Dragons finished third in the public school rankings. Overall, the Carroll program (boys and girls) finished sixth in the nation. BEST ON LAND It doesn’t get any better than the men’s high-school Dragon lacrosse team. The annual award recognizes the top Texas men’s high-school program for their sportsmanship, quality of play, respect for the game’s character and the honor that they bring to the sport.

PARKS Renaissance From just a single park two decades ago, Southlake has blossomed into a community lauded for its beautifully diverse park system. By Lori Stacy

ometimes communities grow at the expense of parks and open spaces. Fortunately, that is not the case in Southlake. Though the town is expected to see an increase in population of 17 percent from 2005 numbers, the parks and recreation options here have not only continued to grow, they have flourished. The list of parks, recreation areas and open spaces in this community is remarkably diverse. The Bob Jones Nature Center and Preserve offers a chance to explore and appreciate the local ecosystem; the impressive lacrosse fields at North Park have welcomed colleges and high schools for playoff games; and the recently opened playground at Bicentennial Park, with its dragon theme and innovative equipment, plays host throughout the days to young children and home-school recreation groups. For those seeking history and lore, By Gina Tagliarino Royal and Annie Smith Park includes a Photography by Jamie Handy hand-dug well rumored to be the final resting place of a notorious gangster named Pinky. In a league of its own is Texas Rangers Miracle League Field, which opened in September and is the backdrop for the Southlake Miracle League, enabling those with disabilities the chance to play baseball. And this month the city will reach another milestone with the opening of “Legends Hall, Phase I of The Marq Southlake, a premier community recreation center that will house the senior center, an events hall, multipurpose conference and meeting spaces, a club lounge, catering kitchen and an outdoor amphitheater and events space. Construction for Phase II, which will include the fitness and recreation center, indoor aquatics, an indoor playground and multipurpose classrooms for programs, begins in 2016.

PARK FAST FACTS In 1992, Southlake had 14 acres of parkland, all in Bicentennial Park At that time, the recommended park acreage per 1,000 residents was six to 10 This number then changed to 21 acres per 1,000 residents – almost double the regional standard Today, the city has 1,205 acres of parks and open spaces Concept plans are currently in place for the following city parks: Bicentennial Park Bob Jones Park Chesapeake Park The Cliffs Park Coker Hike and Bike Park Gateway Park Haven Park Johnson Place Park Kirkwood-Sabre Linear Park Koalaty Park Liberty Park at Sheltonwood Lonesome Dove Park Noble Oaks Park North Park Oak Pointe Park Royal and Annie Smith Park Southlake Sports Complex

“People here prioritize enjoyment with the family. You see that with the parks.” - Mayor Hill

or a town that had just one park two decades ago to be where it is today requires not only community support and involvement but also the effort and planning of the city leadership. Former mayor John Terrell has been one of those driving forces. He was mayor from 2009 until 2015 and has been actively involved in Southlake politics and community service for the past 16 years, meaning he has not only been involved in the planning and development of The Marq from the beginning, but has also witnessed and been a part of a parks renaissance in this city. “We have one of the best park systems in the entire Southwest,” says Terrell, who credits a community and leaders who have not ever strayed from the goal of making Southlake one of the most desirable places to live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. “City leaders had a vision for a number of years about making sure the park system was the highest quality,” says Terrell. This included buying land for parks, recreation and open use and developing a longterm master plan for the area’s outdoor—and indoor—community spaces. A plan that was put in place for the city in 1992 has been modified throughout the years to meet the growing needs of a growing community. “What’s interesting is that these kinds of visions can’t be a success without continuity,” says Terrell. “That we’ve kept this vision for so many years is rare and unique.” Terrell is quick to point out that the city’s impressive park system isn’t the work or the vision of just a few people. “Many people were involved from early on,” he says, adding that community support has been key in executing the vision. “Our entire city buys into this quality of life.” “Our main goal is to continue to provide the park opportunities our residents tell us they desire while maintaining the environmental integrity of the gifts we have been given in this beautiful city,” says Tina Wasserman, chairperson of the Parks and Recreation Board. “As a parks board, we are tasked with balancing many aspects of parks, from large active parks such as Bicentennial Park, Bob Jones Nature Center and North Park, to smaller passive parks, to neighborhood parks and open spaces. I feel our city has done a tremendous job of balancing the need for very active parks for youth and adult activities, to passive parks for walks and enjoying nature. We have places you can go in our city to meet all of your needs.” Says current mayor Laura Hill, “From the day anyone gets involved in Southlake politics, you know right away how important the parks, open spaces and preserving trees is to the city.“We’re so family-centric,” says Hill. “People here prioritize enjoyment with the family. You see that with the parks.” Indeed, on most mornings you can find Mayor Hill taking advantage of one of the city’s parks with her four-legged family member. Hill has been taking Emma, a four-year-old Rottweiler, to her office in Southlake since the dog was just 12 weeks old. Most mornings, the pair stops at Liberty Park at Sheltonwood to get a walk in before work. Neighborhood parks such as Liberty Park reflect what Hill says has been a deliberate effort by the city to hold developers to a higher standard, ensuring that new communities in Southlake preserve green spaces and set neighborhoods back from the street. So even as the population increases and new neighborhoods are built, the charm of the city has not been lost. A Look Back In 1992, Southlake had a population of 8,000 and 14 acres of parkland, all in Bicentennial Park. The city was expected to grow to 48,000 residents (a third more than the current forecast), and the recommended park acreage per 1,000 residents was six to 10, detailed in what the city called the Parks, Recreation and Open Space Master Plan. Four years later, city officials changed that number to 21 acres per

thousand residents, almost double the regional standard, and saw the opening of two additional parks and the expansion of Bicentennial Park to 41 acres. Since then, the city has welcomed additional parks and open space that have brought the total acreage up to 1,205. This number includes small neighborhood parks and the more than eight acres of parks and open spaces within Southlake Town Square, areas that people might not recognize immediately as city parks but that contribute significantly to the beauty and quality of life in Southlake. In 2013, when Terrell was serving as mayor, the city updated the Parks, Recreation and Open Space Master Plan and adopted what they call the “Southlake 2030 Comprehensive Master Plan,” to focus on the future of the city’s parks. The plan emphasizes how important parks, recreation programs and open spaces are to the city, stating that, “accessible parks provide a place to play, exercise, spend time with friends and neighbors, or to just relax and recuperate. Trails serve an important recreational function while also creating opportunities for connections throughout the community. These walking, hiking, running, biking, and equestrian trails connect neighborhoods, parks, schools, places of employment and activity centers, and create mobility opportunities for residents of all ages.” Perhaps the most significant addition to the plan, though, was the inclusion of a community facilities element, one that would encourage residents of all ages to participate in recreational, educational and sports-related classes and activities. The plan emphasized that “such access also increases opportunities for interaction among all members of the community, which can lead to stronger community ties and an improved sense of connectedness.” Next Up: The Marq When The Marq opens later this month, that part of the plan will be realized and Southlake’s citizens will have a central location to meet, enjoy classes and activities or just relax with friends and neighbors. “We are excited to see the dream of a community center come to life with The Marq,” says Wasserman. Mayor Hill agrees. “It’s the bow on the package,” she says, referring to how The Marq fits into the city’s overall parks, recreation and outdoor spaces plan. “And,” she adds, “it’s paid for.” The $15 million facility was funded entirely by a halfcent sales tax, meaning that not only was Phase I completely funded but the impact on Southlake’s citizens was minimal. “Seventy-five percent of that revenue comes from people who don’t live in Southlake,” Chris Tribble, Director of Community Services for the city, points out. Building a Better Senior Center The Senior Center inside the Marq is particularly impressive, with a library, lounges, a café area and a kitchen. But Terrell admits that it wasn’t an easy sell to the area’s seniors. “At first seniors were totally against locating [the senior center] in The Marq,” says Terrell. “They wanted to upgrade the existing facility where it was.” Terrell read an article about the City of Euless’ new senior center, which had been built in the city’s rec center even though the seniors had been hesitant. But after the center opened, Euless’ older citizens loved the facility and

its location, and participation by seniors went up by an astounding 2,000 percent. “So we loaded up a bus with Southlake seniors and took them to visit the new Euless senior center,” says Terrell. “We let their seniors tell our seniors how good it was to be located in a rec center.” After that visit, Southlake’s seniors were wholeheartedly on board for what is to be one of the premier centers of its kind in the area. “I am extremely glad we have been able to meet a need for our seniors,” Terrell adds. The opening of the senior center, though, is bittersweet for Terrell. He worked hand in hand with the longtime chair of the Southlake Senior Advisory Commission, Dick McAuley, who passed away in April 2014—before McAuley was able to see his efforts on the new senior center realized. “He was so, so important,” Terrell says of McAuley’s involvement with the senior center. “He at least knew, though, that it was approved.” A Leader With Impact Though Terrell, who is vice president of commercial development for DFW Airport, no longer holds an official position with the city, he is still involved in the community. “I’ll never stop doing things for the city; I love this city.” He and his wife aren’t quite empty nesters yet (they have two children—Jacob, 18, a student at Texas A&M, and Jordan, 14, a freshman at Carroll High), but that doesn’t mean Terrell doesn’t derive just as much enjoyment from Southlake’s parks as a family with young children. He enjoys taking walks through Bob Jones Nature Center and Preserve and considers a great day to be one that includes an outing to Southlake’s Texas Rangers Miracle League Field to watch a game and cheer on the children. “It’s an inspiration to watch these kids play baseball, many for the first time,” says Terrell, whose wife Joanne is currently on the board of the Miracle League. While Terrell is quick to spread credit for the advances the city has made with its parks, recreation and outdoor spaces—and indeed it has been a community effort that the city’s many leaders have executed—Terrell’s role as a city leader over the past 16 years and his support of Southlake’s impressive park system can’t be minimized. During his tenure, more than 11 miles of new sidewalks and trails were created, and he also helped the city welcome the arrival of Miracle Field, calling it one of the projects he took most pride in as a city leader. Terrell has been involved with the development of The Marq, which has been in the works for 10 to 12 years, since its inception. Says Mayor Hill, “The Marq would not have happened without John Terrell’s strong leadership and fiscal stewardship. I am still amazed that Phase I was built with cash and that John worked with city staff to ensure that Phase II would be built without asking Southlake residents to foot the bill. He had a strong vision for our city parks and you can see his influence in dozens of our parks.” So while we celebrate the opening of The Marq Southlake and reflect on the growth and improvement of the area’s parks and outdoor spaces, we at Southlake Style would also like to celebrate John Terrell as our 7th annual Community Impact Award winner. It’s an honor most deserved.

I recently went through a divorce, which involved getting custody of my children on a very quick basis. Leslie managed to get the papers signed and the order delivered all in the space of a few hours. She also called me that evening to make sure that everything had gone smoothly, that I had my children with me and that they were OK. She has her client’s best interest at heart and I would recommend her to anyone.” Outstanding Representation “The Barrows Firm has always provided outstanding representation for me. Leslie is a top-notch attorney and her staff is tremendous.” Best Decision “Hiring the Barrows Firm was the best decision I could have ever made in regards to my divorce. I would recommend the Barrows Firm to anyone who needs any of their services.” Case Dismissed “My 16-year-old son was charged with a very serious crime. The District Attorney would not dismiss my son’s case and the case was set for trial. Right before trial, Mrs. Barrows negotiated a dismissal of the case for my son.” Highly Recommend “Leslie Barrows and the members of her firm were an incredible help to me during my divorce. They are wonderful to work with and go above and beyond what is required of them. BERKEYS AIR CONDITIONING, PLUMBING & ELECTRICAL Berkeys for ALL Plumbing, HVAC and Electrical Needs

Excellent as Always

“We have been using Berkeys ever since replacing our HVAC systems and we are always pleased with their services. Our air conditioners and furnaces now run cleaner, quieter and more efficient, and we are thrilled our cooling and heating bills have been significantly reduced. Our technician, Brandon C., always provides us with prompt and courteous service, is very thorough, and always takes time to explain how our systems work, and give recommendations on how to keep our systems running efficiently. Berkeys has also provided excellent plumbing and electrical services in repairing leaky faucets and faulty electrical outlets. Locally owned and operated, Berkeys provides a ‘go to’ for our home maintenance needs and we would definitely recommend them!”

“Whether it’s been a leak in our master bath, a problem with the hot water heater or an issue with the garbage disposal, we’ve always used Berkeys and have always been 100% satisfied. People always complain about price with service providers but we’ve always found Berkeys to be very fair, especially when you consider the professionalism and attention to detail you get with a service call. And as far as trust goes, Berkeys reinforced my trust recently when they told me that I didn’t need a service call and had a service technician call and walk me through what was a very simple repair to our disposal. In a nutshell, we think Berkeys rocks!” - Charles

I have used several Realtors in the past and none have even come close to being as competent, organized, knowledgeable, accommodating and driven to make the home buying experience great as her. We were coming from out-of-state and we had only three days to find a home. On top of that, my husband and I would be bringing our one-year-old along, and it was also a holiday weekend. Blast from the Past THE PAC-MAN ARCADE GAME IS BACK.

G

rab your Swatch watch, your Reeboks and a pocket full of change, and remember the good old days—getting lost in a heated game of Pac-Man without the fear of mom calling you on your cellphone to check up on you. For those of us who can remember crowded arcades filled with the sounds of the “pew, pew, pew” shoot ’em-ups and the “ding, ding, ding” pinball machines, Namco is bringing that 1980s nostalgia to life. The designer of the original Pac-Man arcade video game has created the 30th Anniversary Authentic Pac-Man Arcade Game to take you back in time. Complete with the original programming, the arcade game recreates the glowing maze, pac-dots, ghosts and the yellow chomping hero himself in exact detail. The crisp 19-inch LCD screen displays Pac-Man and his ghostly enemies, while the four-way joystick and buttons provide authentic control. And no Pac-Man arcade challenge would be complete without the classic “wocka, wocka, wocka” soundtrack, resonating through the integrated speakers. Pac-Man images reminiscent of the 1980s video game era—think neon colors and pixilation— adorn the arcade game cabinet. But there’s no need to hoard your loose change. There is only a decal of a coin door on front—no real slot. Just plug the cord into an AC outlet and you are set. Just make sure you pick the right spot for your memory-lane icon to settle. The 30th Anniversary Authentic PacMan Arcade Game is embodied in standard arcade game casing, stands five feet tall and weighs more than 230 pounds. The unit will make a great addition to the family game room. Let Junior and his friends duke it out on the couch using the (insert manufacturer here) console. Leave the real thing to the Baby Boomers. In addition to Pac-Man, the arcade game is programmed with 12 additional games from the 1980s, including Galaga, Galaxian, Galaga 88, Xevious, Rally-X, Bosconian, Ms. Pac-Man, Dig Dug, PacMania, Mappy, Rolling Thunder and Dragon Spirit. While you may be able to find some of these games online or a compilation “family fun night” console video game, nothing beats the blast from the past feeling of an authentic arcade game. The next time your child asks you to join her for a video game marathon, make it a point first to regale her with a tale of big hair and parachute pants. Be sure to start out with the phrase “long ago,” because let’s face it, to her, 30 years ago is ancient.

Tea Time CELEBRATE THE SEASON AT THE ASHTON’S HOLIDAY TEA.

SIX 10 GRILLE, THE ASHTON HOTEL 610 Main St., Ft. Worth 817.332.0100 TheAshtonHotel.com

78 • DEC 15

Amid the hustle and bustle of Cowtown at Christmastime is a quiet, cozy spot to enjoy a cup of tea. But not just any tea: afternoon tea, the English custom that began in the 1840s. You can find this ideal spot in the heart of downtown Ft. Worth tucked inside The Ashton Hotel, known as the jewel on Main Street. Here, guests are invited to take a respite from the busyness of the season and take part in a sweet and civilized pastime. Housed inside the The Ashton’s upscale restaurant, SIX 10 Grille, is a charming, intimate Tea Room. It’s truly the perfect setting for afternoon tea with classical music drifting through the air and fine bone china from England resting atop each linen-bedecked table. A fireplace crackling in the corner creates a warm, cozy ambience. We think settling in for a cup of tea is just the way to relax after doing a little holiday shopping in Sundance Square. The Ashton has hosted afternoon tea since

the 39-room boutique hotel opened its doors a century ago. It offers Fall Tea on Saturday afternoons along with a special Teddy Bear Tea for children under 12, but we suggest partaking in the Holiday Tea. It runs from 2 to 4 p.m. every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from November 27 through December 27. Whether a formal tea is already part of your family’s holiday tradition or you’re looking to do something special this year, you’re in for a treat at The Ashton. The four-course feast includes the requisite assortment of crustless finger sandwiches, an array of scones and yuletide sweets plus a selection of some of Ft. Worth’s finest loose-leaf teas. This isn’t meant to be a quick break in your day; this is a ceremonious experience. The Holiday Tea begins with a flute of festive champagne cocktail and the first course: Roasted Chestnut Soup with Sweet Potato Ribbons. When pureed, chestnuts become rich and creamy with

a subtle but distinctive flavor. The sweet potato gives this soothing bowl of seasonal comfort food just the right balance of savory and sweet. With appetites officially warmed up, it’s time for the second course. The menu selections are many, ranging from Christmas tea sandwiches such as Smoked Salmon and Capered Mascarpone to Baked Brie and Lobster Bouchée. Each dainty, two-bite sandwich is soft and freshly baked. Although these sandwiches are small, they’re satisfying. Part of the fun of tea time is the presentation, and at The Ashton, everything is served with all the pomp and circumstance you’d expect for English royalty. Food isn’t just brought out and placed in front of you; a server grandly presents a three-tiered cake stand. On this graceful culinary accouterment are china plates topped with delicate tea sandwiches. Bread and ingredients have never looked so dignified. While savoring the bites, you have your choice of teas to sip. Options include White Pomegranate, Orange Blossom Oolong and Cherry Sencha among others, but the most-requested teas are the Coconut Assam and Vanilla Rose. The Coconut Assam tea is robust and uplifting, a balance of bold black tea and subtly sweet coconut. It’s amazing on its own but particularly delicious when sweetened and combined with milk. The Vanilla Rose tea will have you feeling warm and content. Rich and flavorful, it’s as invigorating as it is relaxing. Each cup is nicely brewed without any bitterness. Because this is a feast, the experience continues with a third course of Buttermilk and Raspberry Scones. They’re delicate, freshly baked and served with Devonshire cream, lemon curd

SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

and strawberry preserves. The scones are warm and perfectly portioned. Every single bite is delicious. The fourth course and final component of the Holiday Tea is a fanciful display of confections including Eggnog Truffles, Pistachio Macaroons and Chocolate Bon Bons. The most-favored sweets, though, are the Raspberry and Chocolate-Filled Shortbreads. These tasty gems consist of buttery shortbread stuffed with rich chocolate ganache. They’re an indulgence, but they’re worth it. If a visit to The Ashton’s Holiday Tea feels like a fancy urban escape, it’s because it is. Ft. Worth definitely shows its refined side with this tea time. We recommend making reservations early (spots fill up fast) and savoring the magic of the season with a spot of tea. Pinkies up!

Sushi Scene RA Sushi brings fun and flavor to Japanese cuisine.

Viva Las Vegas roll

Rainbow roll

RA SUSHI BAR RESTAURANT 1131 E. Southlake Blvd. 817.601.9590 RASushi.com

80 • DEC 15

With dozens of red orbs dangling from the ceiling and a dance-music soundtrack pulsating through the air, the atmosphere at RA Sushi feels more like a club than a place that’s serious about sushi. But make no mistake; the upscale restaurant that rolled into Southlake’s Park Village is serving up some of the area’s most creative and artfully prepared sushi. Open for lunch, dinner, happy hour and Sunday brunch, RA Sushi’s impressive eight-page menu appeals to both sushi novices and connoisseurs. There are dozens of sushi offerings, each one meticulously designed and presented. But if raw fish isn’t your thing, the restaurant also offers a few chicken and steak selections. We started our meal with the Garlic Edamame, which was lightly lacquered in an Asian garlic butter sauce. It wasn’t overly oily like some edamame appetizers. We also crunched our way through an order of the “RA”ckin’ Shrimp. This tempura-battered goodness was expertly crispy, and when dipped into the accompanying ginger teriyaki sauce, the shrimp was divine. For lunch, our group gravitated toward the Viva Las Vegas roll, a chewy mixture of crab and cream cheese rolled in rice and seaweed and then lightly tempura battered. A sweet eel sauce lifted this roll into a whole new realm of deliciousness. The Spicy Chicken Teryiaki Udon was an appetizing choice for those in our party who preferred to steer clear of sushi. A departure from typical teriyaki dishes, this offering consisted of juicy slices of chicken nestled atop a bed of thick, al dente udon noodles. Spicy teriyaki sauce was artfully applied to the sides of the plate, making this dish as pleasing to view as it was to taste. If you’re looking to mix things up for brunch, give RA Sushi a try. Its Sunday brunch runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and offers our brunch-time favorite: bottomless drinks. But don’t expect to find the usual; the restaurant puts its unique twist on brunch-time beverages. The Tokyo Bloody Mary is a wake-you-up mixture of Absolut Citron and Sho Chiku Bai Nigori Sake that’s shaken with crushed cucumber and a signature wasabi-infused Bloody Mary mix. The result is a perfectly balanced drink that pays homage to the classic but offers some Japanese flavor. If sweet is more your speed, try the Ginger Mimosa. It’s made with sparkling wine and ginger orange juice. Both drinks are available by the glass, but let’s be real: Bottomless is the way to go for brunch. Regardless of when you visit, you’re in for a feast of flavorful meals, innovative sushi and top-shelf cocktails. RA might be a trendy take on “raw,” but to us, it’s more of a cheer for the newest addition to Southlake’s sushi scene.

DEL FRISCO’S GRILLE 1200 E. Southlake Blvd. 817.410.3777 DelFriscosGrille.com

82 • DEC 15

Del Frisco’s Grille is certainly a classy and sophisticated chophouse, but don’t think of it only as an after-work establishment – it’s actually an ideal spot for lunch. The restaurant recently rolled out its “Lunch Time in No Time” campaign featuring an expanded lunch menu along with several new starters. We were happy to bring our appetites and taste our way through the many original and intriguing options. When we arrived for lunch, the staff was friendly and welcoming, escorting us up the stairs to a comfortable leather booth overlooking the bar. We prefer to sit on the second level (it’s the perfect spot to gaze upon the comings and goings of Southlake Boulevard), but there’s not a bad spot in the house – upstairs, downstairs or on the rooftop patio. There are plenty of diverse and creative options on the restaurant’s Grab A Pair lunch menu, and along with its Daily Dish features, there’s something for every craving. We kicked off our visit with one of our all-time favorite appetizers, the Burrata and Heirloom Tomato Salad, along with some new selections: the Lollipop Chicken Wings and the Asian Street Tacos. The salad was beautifully plated, featuring fragrant tomatoes, flavorful basil oil and balsamic vinegar, and a generous portion of rich, creamy burrata. As for the wings, we loved biting into a classic, Buffalo-style chicken wing without the sticky fingers afterwards. These were downright addictive when dunked into a cool, avocado-ranch dressing. The street tacos, which were loaded with barbecue pork, pickled daikon and carrot, cucumber, cilantro and chiles, had an unexpected but palatable kick. Our appetites piqued after the first course, we moved on to the main event: our lunch entrées. The Brick Chicken was easily a standout. Succulent, juicy meat with perfectly crisped skin was paired with luscious, hand-mashed potatoes, shallotbuttered green beans and roasted chicken jus. This dish was the ultimate in comfort cuisine. Another favorite among our group was the Chopped Chicken and Farm Greens Salad. Tender, diced chicken, roasted pine nuts, crumbled blue cheese, tomato, carrot, and a Dijon mustard vinaigrette made it a satisfying, full-flavored meal we’ll definitely order again. If you believe that no meal is complete without a touch of something sweet, we feel the same way. That’s why we savored not one but two desserts: the Coconut Cream Pie, which was topped off with a gigantic heap of white-chocolate shavings, along with the Nutella Bread Pudding, which was moist, warm and delicious served with a giant scoop of coffee ice cream. Del Frisco’s Grille is on point for an efficient, in-and-out lunch, but with the upscale ambience, friendly service and tantalizing menu options, you’ll want to linger.

Cold, Snowy (North) American Winter THREE SKI RESORTS TO BOOK THIS SEASON.

C

hoosing a ski resort for this year’s obligatory winter vacation can be a daunting task. With so many to sort through, it’s hard to decide where to book. You can narrow your list by myriad of attributes and amenities, or you can add another box to check off: festivities. The following three resorts in North America have more to offer than just fresh snow and hot cocoa moments.

Ski Like a Champion Home to the only men’s World Cup stop in the United States, Beaver Creek Ski Resort hosts the Birds of Prey competition each year. For serious ski enthusiasts looking for an adventure to observe from afar, this event, which takes place December 4-6 this year, is sure to meet your vicarious needs. Want to dig your own skis into the powder at Beaver Creek? With 1,832 acres, the resort offers a few surprises. In addition to the 150 different trails, skiers can find fresh-powdered ski “stashes” throughout the terrain. But if you’d like to take the path most traveled, you won’t have to worry about sloppy snow. Groomers work all night to ensure groomed trails stay fresh. BeaverCreek.com Looking for luxury lodging at Beaver Creek? The Westin Riverfront Resort & Spa at Beaver Creek Mountain has a long amenity list offered on site, and ski activity assistance to boot. Let the onsite ski shop provide

overnight tune-ups and waxing for your equipment. Left the house in a hurried rush for the airport? You have the ability to rent skis, snowboards and other necessary accessories such as helmets at the ski shop as well. Pair these resources with classes for ages three and up, and your family is ready to hit the slopes. Two things can motivate guests when it comes to taking advantage of the onsite spa, Anjali. Number one: Skiers can attest to worn-out arms and legs—the sport can be rough on the body. Number two: Maybe you’ve discovered skiing isn’t your forte. Retreating to Spa Anjali for the Rocky Mountain, Alpen or Himalayan experience, those wishing to relax and rejuvenate have a world of pampering possibilities at their fingertips. Santa Meet and Greet Imagine hitting the slopes with none other than the big man in the red suit himself. That’s right. Santa is leaving his sled and reindeer behind to visit the Park City Ski Resort in Utah mid December through early January. The new, 16-day festival DecemberFest will include morning and après musical acts, village entertainers, a resort tree-lighting ceremony and more. Not impressed with theatrics? These numbers might appeal to your conventional side. With more than 7,300 acres, more than 300 trails, 38 lifts, seven terrain parks, 14 bowls, six natural half pipes, one super pipe and one mini pipe, Park City is considered the largest ski area in the United States. by-side mountains, each one a mile high. Connected by the Guinness World Record-holding PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola, the two mountains offer enough terrain—8,171 acres to be exact—for all types of winter activities. There are chutes, steeps, cliffs and bowls for skiers and snowboarders of all ages. WhistlerBlackcomb.com

Why rent a cabin when you can reserve a suite at the Waldorf Astoria Park City? With accommodations ranging in size from a small city apartment (350 square feet) to a quaint suburban home (2,100 square feet), leave roughing it to the less traveled and enjoy amenities such as your own personal fireplace and kitchenettes. The resort suites are made to accommodate skiers, snowboarders and snow-shoers alike. Because the one thing all three guests have in common? After a long day on the slopes or the backcountry trails of the Wasatch Mountains, their bodies are in need of rest. WaldorfAstoria3.Hilton.com

Celebrity Sightings One of Canada’s leading film festivals, the 15th Annual Whistler Film Festival at Whistler Blackcomb Ski Resort in Canada takes place in early December. The event will feature more than 80 innovative and original films from around the world. You’ll also have opportunities to meet the people behind the scenes of each film. Think of it as Cannes, only much colder, and your free time will be filled with action-packed skiing rather than toasting cocktails. But you didn’t just come for the dinner and a movie experience, right? There has to be a ski-worthy redeeming quality about Whistler Blackcomb. How about this? Whistler Blackcomb features two side-

Bigger and Brighter Experience festive fun at Texas Motor Speedway’s Gift of Lights.

T

exas Motor Speedway. If Santa could ditch his sleigh, we’d bet he would trade it in for a racecar. And why not? The Man in the Big Red Suit has a lot of presents to deliver, and not much time to fulfill his duty. Luckily, he may get to sneak in a test drive of his dream car during Texas Motor Speedway’s Gift of Lights, a two-mile, drive-through holiday spectacular that stays true to its name with lights, lights and more lights (over two million!) paired with Christmas music on your car’s radio through KLTY 94.9. For those wanting to meet Santa before he gets to work delivering all those presents, be sure to stop by the all-new Santa’s Village on the inside track of Texas Motor Speedway for more than 22,000 square feet of surprises, pictures with Santa, free popcorn and more. And if you need a winter warm-up, hot cocoa will be available to keep you toasty through the night. This year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever, with several hundred new displays and a variety of new festivities. And while it’s a wonderful way to enjoy the season with your family, it’s also a great way to give back to the community. For every ticket sale, a portion of the proceeds will benefit charity partners including DFW Toys for Tots, Ronald McDonald House, Christmas Wish and Speedway Children’s Charities. You’re also invited to bring an unwrapped gift for Toys for Tots to enjoy a $5 discount on your visit. Give back, celebrate and relish a family tradition you’ll be proud to share for years to come.

usic Hall Fair Park. He follows four major food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup. Smiling is his favorite. He’s always on the hunt for Santa. And if you can say it, he can sing it. Who else could it be, but Buddy the Elf? Our favorite character is back this Christmas to dazzle us with his naïve, yet endearing personality in a hit musical that’s sure to add a touch of mischief to your holiday. Join the fun as Buddy, a young orphan, finds himself raised in the North Pole after accidentally crawling into Santa’s bag of gifts as a little boy. Raised by elves, it’s unbeknownst to him that he’s actually a human being — that is until his towering size and terrible toy-making abilities reveal the truth. The discovery takes him on a heartwarming adventure to New York City in search of his birth father, as he works to find his true identity. But when he discovers that his father is on the naughty list and his stepbrother doesn’t even believe in Santa Claus (gasp!), Buddy must use his determined spirit to win them over and share the true meaning of Christmas with them all. Hailed by critics, Broadway buffs and fans of the classic holiday movie starring Will Ferrell, Elf The Musical offers everything you could want from a holiday performance. From witty humor to lively music, it has a little something for every age group, with enough festive joy to bring a smile to even the biggest Grinch in town. An excuse to skip the crowded malls and head inside for a little holiday warmth? We’ll be there!

LESSONS FROM A BASEBALL GREAT HOMER BUSH TALKS ABOUT SUCCESS AT THE PLATE AND IN LIFE.

For anybody who wants to up their baseball game, just look to former MLB player Homer Bush. He wrote the book on it: Hitting Low in the Zone: A New Baseball Paradigm. In the book, the Southlake resident shares stories from his days playing with the Padres, Yankees, Blue Jays and Marlins, along with data on how hitters can experience consistent success every time they step up to the plate. Here’s what Bush has to say about his book, the sport and the power of perseverance.

SS NEXT DOOR

Q: What inspired you to write your book? A: About two years ago, I was looking for a competitive edge for my son. I started researching the data and video of some of the most elite hitters and recognized that their swing mechanics had a common thread. I wanted to open up a dialogue about what swing mechanics are necessary for hitters to have consistent success at the plate. Q: What do you hope readers will take away from it? A: I want readers to know that contrary to popular belief, hitters can be improved significantly. Elite offensive players are not born; they become that way through having the proper hitting approach and mechanics. Successful hitters have a plan at the plate, and they execute that plan no matter how big the moment may be. Q: One of your biggest passions is teaching hitting. What message do you want to impart to aspiring baseball players? A: If a player understands the dynamics of baseball and what it takes to be successful – things such as preparation, focus and execution, along with hard work – they can do great things in the game. Q: You’re a regular youth instructor for a number of camps and clinics. What do you find fulfilling about coaching? A: I pride myself on being able to help players of all ages take a sometimes-difficult game and make it easy. If players trust me, I can give them a plan in almost every phase of the game that will make it fun and allow them to have success at the same time. My goal is always to inspire players to reach their full potential while providing them a supportive and positive learning environment for personal growth. Q: You were a member of the 1998 World Championship New York Yankees team. What’s the secret to your success? A: Several things. I’ve always remained humble and I’ve tried to make the most of every opportunity presented to me. I’ve maintained intense focus, surrounded myself with people who would provide sound advice and remained a team player at all times. Those things have worked for me and are what I teach my own children. Q: Tell us about one of your favorite memories from the Major Leagues. A: One of my favorite Major League memories is without a doubt my first Major League homerun, which happened to be at the old Yankee Stadium in 1998. The game was televised on ESPN, so all of my family and

home run

friends got to witness it as well. I’ll never forget the standing ovation from the fans as I rounded third base. Q: What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned from your pro baseball career? A: I’ve learned to keep going even when things don’t seem to be going my way. There’s no replacement for a little hard work, dedication and perseverance. Q: You’ve lived in Southlake for nearly two decades. What do you enjoy about our community? A: Southlake is full of good, hardworking people. I’m a real fan of the high standards that my kids are held to in the school system. I travel heavily throughout the year for baseball, and I like the fact that when I come home, I don’t have to leave my general neighborhood. Southlake has some of the best dining and shopping in the DFW area. Q: Share with us a little about your family. A: My son Homer Jr. is an eighth grader at Carroll Middle School. He loves all sports (baseball is his favorite, of course). My daughter Jailyn is an 11th grader at Carroll Senior High School. She’s very creative and loves art. My wife, Monica, and I have been married for almost 20 years and are high school sweethearts. She’s a great writer and one of the smartest women I know, which is why she’s my co-author on this book. She knows my hitting philosophy better than anyone. Q: You’re working on a second book now. Can you give us a sneak preview? A: Yes. After researching for Hitting Low in the Zone, it seemed like a natural progression for me to do another book on other aspects of the game. This book will talk about how to be a high-end baseball player overall. It will have more detailed hitting mechanics, as well as tips on fielding, throwing and base running. Q: Anything else you’d like to add? A: I’d like for players, dads and coaches to know that if you want to be an elite hitter, the information in this book will get you there. If you read the information with an open mind and execute the mechanics, I am confident that your path to consistent success at the plate will be substantially less difficult.
