While awaiting the start of my daughter’s holiday concert, some idle chatter led a friend to question me on my favorite new area restaurants. I’m quite sure the response left her wondering if I had ever left the zip code. Thanks to the vibrant Dallas and Fort Worth markets and our team at Southlake Style, there are more than a few notable restaurants full of inspired cuisine, tasteful drinks and artful decor to read about each month. Afterward, I’m usually left planning a night full of toasts, sport coats and late night laughs... in my head. Just as I let my friend down with a shoulder shrug of a response, I’ve also let myself down. The truth of the matter is, the wife and I don’t get out as much as I’d like. And therein lies the heart of my New Year’s resolution. Could I eat less? Work out more? Sure, but everything in moderation. This year I aim to take a page out of Jessica Tondre’s blog (see page 92) and create a fun habit that actually sticks in the new year. In 2019, I will… I will make dinner reservations! Yes, you read that correctly: I’m going to put my mouth where my magazine is. There will be reservations for two and, with all apologies to my friends at Armend’s, they won’t be for pizza pick up! I’ll be relying on inspiration from our new department appropriately named Date Night where we’ll propose nearby activities to coincide with our recommended eateries — all with the mindset of connecting with your special someone. Our first installment, Scrumptious Strolling, (see page 78) takes you to the Bishop Arts District. Enjoy!

guiltily binged the “Twilight” saga, you have – though perhaps unknowingly – seen freerunning and parkour in action.

Deriving from the French word “parcours,” meaning route or course, parkour was originally formed out of military training. It has taken many shapes over the years, but the concept has remained the same: getting from Point A to Point B efficiently by using obstacles to your benefit. Think back to the “Bourne Ultimatum” chase scenes. As parkour grew in popularity and evolved, another concept was added called freerunning. “Freerunning is adding the creative and stylized movements such as flips that are more along the lines of self-expression,” says Gabe Nunez, Co-Founder and CEO of Tempest Freerunning. “Parkour and freerunning go hand in hand.” BRINGING THE MOVEMENT TO SOUTHLAKE Now, thanks to Nunez, there is a gym for the sport in Southlake. At Tempest Freerunning Academy, people of all ages can learn how to use the environment around them athletically and creatively. He and a group of fellow athletes founded the company in Los Angeles in 2007. At the time, they were working in the film industry as stunt performers. They noticed that the parkour and freerunning demand was rising very quickly. Films and commercials were popularizing the athletic movement, and it quickly changed the course of how chase scenes were shot. Nunez and his friends were suddenly getting a ton of stunt work, but they noticed that it was challenging to find a place to practice. “After a couple of successful years in film, we decided, ‘Hey, let’s build a place where we can train undisturbed by weather or by security,’” he says. “There are always those boundaries between us wanting to do something productive with ourselves, but not wanting to disrespect properties. So we built this gym almost as a selfish venture just so we had somewhere to train.” If you search the terms “parkour” or “freerunning” on any social media platform, you’ll be inundated with videos of enthusiast practicing and perfecting their craft. So it was not out of the ordinary for the Tempest team to shoot a video and post it once their gym was complete. Almost overnight, it went viral. “That’s when we realized that there was a demand for this beyond us,” Nunez explains. The company went on to open two more California locations, and last month, they opened their first out-of-state location, right here in Southlake. Nunez says they looked all over, from Atlanta to Austin, but decided to try for a Dallas-area location. After hitting a few snags in Frisco, the group happened upon a location in Southlake. “It just so happens that the owner of the building was in the Hollywood film industry which we are all a part of,” Nunez says. “When we came to check the space out, we obviously fell in love with this area. I’ve got family in Grapevine and Roanoke, so it worked out perfectly.” SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

When asked if the town has a culture fit for freerunning, Nunez doesn’t hesitate. “We believe there is a culture for that everywhere. It is going back to the basics of human movement,” he emphasizes. “When people see it, they almost always say ‘Oh, I used to do that when I was a kid.’ I think that’s true. I think Texas, in general, is just a very athletic place, so it lends itself to that, and I definitely think Southlake is a great place for us.” HOW IT ALL WORKS Tempest is far more than a gym. The company banded together to create a curriculum that would be challenging, fun and keep kids safe. Similar to belts in martial arts, Tempest separates levels by wristband colors. Not only does this give students something to look forward to but also it gives coaches something to look out for during open gyms. If they see someone wearing a green wristband – indicative of the beginner level – perched on the highest obstacles, they know something is not right and they will rush over to assist and correct the student. Ranging from green bands – PK All Day, in which students learn the basics – to gold band – Goldfish Gangsta, the highest level where students learn how to give back to the freerunning community – Tempest trains all levels of athletes. Wristbands are determined by a testing session that is held every ten weeks to assess student’s mastery of their level’s skills. Tempest Academy even has special classes for the younger enthusiast, including Kinderkour for ages 4-5 and Tempest Tadpoles for ages 6-8. At the end of the day, the academy is equipping kids with skills that may very well evolve down the road. “What I love about the sport so much is that it truly has endless possibilities,” Nunez says. “It’s one of few sports where there is no set list of moves. People are always creating new moves. Things that you didn’t even think were possible a year ago are being done by 17-year-old kids.” Of course, the idea of your child flipping off of a building may not be the most calming thought, but Tempest has plenty of precautions in place to ensure that kids stay safe. From the pace of the curriculum to the coaches being CPR certified and going through heavy safety training, Nunez reports very few incidents over the past decade. “Like anything else, there are absolutely dangers to what we do,” he says. “But what we find in our sport specifically is that instead of us teaching people discipline, our environment kind of does that for us. You tend to have a lot more self-respect when you’re challenging yourself to do stuff that may scare you.” And that is a large component of parkour and freerunning: overcoming obstacles. Whether that is a literal obstacle to vault over or a mental block to work through, the sport builds more than muscle. It builds confidence. “It’s the most liberating sport I’ve ever been a part of,” Nunez says.

MAYOR HILL ANNOUNCES MAYOR’S ALLIANCE FOR UNITY AND CULTURE At the December 4 City Council meeting, the council approved the start of the Mayor’s Alliance for Unity and Culture. This group will help the council and city staff conceptualize, organize and execute future programs and activities to promote diversity, inclusion and equality in Southlake. Anyone interested in applying for this committee, including students, can find the proper form at CityofSouthlake.com/MayorsAlliance. Applications are due by January 7.
CARROLL DRAGON FOOTBALL FINISHES THE YEAR IN FRISCO After a hard fought match, the Southlake Carroll Dragons (13-1) fell to the Duncanville Panthers (13-0) 51-7 on December 8 to make an exit from the playoffs and finish the season. The game started close with the Dragon defense holding the Panthers' high-powered offense to only seven points in the first quarter, but the deficit grew deeper into the second and third quarter before Carroll could close the gap. Emotions were high following the end of the game, as seniors reminisced on their last down of Dragon football. Standout running back and SMU commit TJ McDaniel was especially emotional, as both team members from Duncanville and Carroll consoled him and congratulated him on his many accomplishments. While they fell short of the state championship, there is no reason for Carroll to hang its head when considering the season's accomplishments. At the beginning of the season, the Dragons not only had to navigate a newly re-drawn district but also a brand new head coach. Under Riley Dodge, the Dragons went undefeated throughout both non-district and district play, which hasn't been done since the 2013 season. This season alone, the Dragons racked up a total of 22 receiving touchdowns and 52 rushing touchdowns for a grand total of 558 points against their opponents. Thirty-three of those touchdowns came from McDaniel, who finished the season with just over 2,000 rushing yards, breaking the mark against Duncanville. While Carroll came short of adding yet another State Championship ring to the dynasty, fans and opponents can be sure the Dragons will be back next season, ready for another chance.

TJ MCDANIEL RECEIVES HONOR AT TELEVISED AWARD CEREMONY Despite a 13-game win streak being ended by Duncanville in the quarterfinals, McDaniel is certainly ending his high school football career on a high note as he takes home the Landry Award. The Landry Award is a prestigious honor that recognizes the top high school football player in North Texas who demonstrates positive character and leadership attributes. With 2,122 rushing yards and 34 touchdowns, it's safe to say McDaniel fits that description. He will continue his football career at the collegiate level next year for SMU. Named after football icon Tom Landry, this award is basically the Heisman Trophy of North Texas high school football. In fact, the 2014 Landry Award recipient Kyler Murray, now quarterback for the University of Oklahoma, was recently named winner of the Heisman. The ceremony was filmed and shown on CBS 11 on December 21, which gave Dragon fans the chance to see him accept this honor before their eyes. LOCAL COUPLE USES THEIR WEDDING REGISTRY TO GIVE BACK TO THE GATEHOUSE In lieu of traditional wedding gifts, Lauren Campanello and Sean Ford pointed their guests to give back instead of shopping a registry. They asked all their friends and family to donate to The Gatehouse to honor their wedding, and they were able to raise more than $25,000 for the women and children in their program.

CARROLL ROBOTICS TEAM PREPARES FOR TRIP TO THE SMITHSONIAN THIS MONTH Carroll Robotics team 7110Z, a group made up of eight Carroll STEM Academy seniors, will attend the “Night At The Museum” at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum on January 25 and 26. Michael Chuang, Aaryan Das, Tenzin Dhondup, Samuel He, Arvi Krishnan, Sai Mahapatra, Amanda Piyapanee and Ty Ponzo were invited to be a part of the event after winning the Southlake Carroll VEX Robotics Tournament back in November. Teams from across the U.S. will come together for this event to fight for a spot in the VEX World Championship in April. For those who want to see Carroll Robotics groups in action before 7110Z heads to Washington D.C., teams will compete at Carroll Senior High School on January 12.

MORE THAN TWO DOZEN DRAGONS SET TO CONTINUE THEIR ATHLETIC CAREERS ON THE COLLEGIATE LEVEL More than two dozen Dragons made their college decisions official last semester. On November 14, friends and family packed into Carroll Senior High School to celebrate with 25 student-athletes as they signed their Letters of Intent. These 25 students will go on to play their sports at a collegiate level. By signing their Letters of Intent, the seniors officially ended the recruiting process. Families set up festive tables with photos, cookies, balloons and more, all in the corresponding colors of their students’ future university. National Signing Day is in February, so this set does not represent all of the graduating seniors continuing in collegiate athletics.

CARROLL DRAGON PICKS UP A BRIEFCASE ON NEW SEASON OF ‘DEAL OR NO DEAL’ First it was Chrissy Teigen and Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle, and now it is former Southlake resident Madi Teeuws picking up a briefcase and joining NBC’s new season of “Deal or No Deal.” The show got a reboot almost 10 years after it stopped production, which means more families are competing for large sums of money, more Howie Mandel jokes and a new set of briefcase models, one of which is a Carroll graduate. Madi moved with her family to Southlake from Washington D.C. when she was 10 years old. While attending Carroll ISD’s intermediate, middle and high schools, she did everything from horseback riding to soccer to softball and theater. In high school, she focused on basketball and was the shooting guard for the Dragons. So when you are watching “Deal or No Deal,” keep an eye out for Briefcase Model No. 15. Because once a Dragon, always a Dragon!
CARROLL ISD MAKES THE AP DISTRICT HONOR ROLL FOR THE SEVENTH TIME In yet another display of Dragon excellence, Carroll ISD landed on the ninth annual AP District Honor Roll. This year's honor roll is comprised of 373 school districts in the U.S. and Canada. To qualify for the honor roll, large districts must show an increase of participation/ access to AP by at least 4 percent. For medium and small districts, the percentage of increase must be 6 and 11 percent, respectively. Unless the district has already attained a performance level in which more than 70 percent of AP students are scoring a 3 or higher, the district must also show improved performance levels. In other words, it’s not enough to increase the amount of AP classes. They must also prove effective. The AP District Honor Roll has existed for nine years, and Carroll has achieved that honor for seven of those years. TOYS FOR TOTS TOY DRIVE HITS SOUTHLAKE TOWN SQUARE Residents brought out new, unwrapped toys to the front of Southlake Town Square to benefit Toys for Tots on December 3. Toys for Tots supports the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and their mission to spread holiday joy to all of the North Texas’ children. These donations helped them ensure everyone had a happy Christmas. FOX 4’s Dan Henry was onsite for the 16th annual drive and broadcasted live from the scene.

SOUTHLAKE DPS AND PUBLIC LIBRARY HOST STORY TIME AT THE STATION – HOLIDAY EDITION Families came out on December 12 to enjoy a holiday story, puppet show and sing-a-long at the Southlake DPS and Public Library’s Story Time At The Station – Holiday Edition. The family-friendly event also acted as a winter clothing drive which benefited Christmas is for Children, so families brought out hats, gloves, scarves and socks to help keep kids warm throughout the winter. After collecting donations, local firefighters and police officers were able to give interested kids an inside look at their trucks and vehicles.

But he wanted to bring that joy across the country with the help of a few key investors. So he went on ABC’s “Shark Tank” on December 2 to pitch his business. He ended up securing a $200,000 investment from Barbara Corcoran during the episode. It’s safe to say that the big guy has some job security.

Caroline The Champ HOW THE DUNCANS WENT FROM A CANCER DIAGNOSIS TO GIVING BACK

s Old Union Elementary School kindergartener Caroline Duncan flips through her picture book from last year’s Children’s Cancer Fund annual fashion show and gala, she stops to comment on the dress she’s rocking down the runway. Fashioned in her favorite color, blue, Caroline, age 5, smiles remembering her day of dress up. While others might first notice the people walking her down the runway, Cowboys legend Tony Romo and his wife Candice Crawford, the five-year-old talks fondly about the people who did her hair and makeup backstage. Caroline’s mom, Julie, once asked Caroline if she knew the famous couple escorting her down the runway last year. To which she replied, “Mrs. Candice and some other guy.” After clarifying it was in fact Tony Romo, Julie asked her if she knew what the man was known for. Caroline said, “He’s a DJ, mommy.” She’s not wrong. At the 2018 gala, where Tony Romo acted as an honorary DJ, local celebrities came together to put their fame aside and let the day’s models shine. Dressed to the nines in their chosen looks, these kids were able to lose themselves while strutting their stuff, which is why the night is so special. And why Caroline is already looking forward to helping out this April for the 2019 event.
Caroline’s Story Caroline Duncan was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (A.L.L.) on her third birthday. After Julie and her husband continuously saw their daughter spike high fevers, lose the color out of her cheeks and eventually lose the ability to stand, they kept taking her to the doctor just hoping for an answer. “I just had a feeling that something’s not right,” Julie says. “It was crazy scary.” After running a blood test on their third visit to the pediatrician, the couple took Caroline to Children’s Medical Center Dallas where a bone marrow biopsy confirmed her diagnosis. It was the start of their health battle full of tests, steroids, chemotherapy and a whole lot of prayer. “We never thought we weren’t going to get through it,” Dan says. “And that’s because of our strong faith,” Julie comments. For the first 30 days after diagnosis, Caroline was admitted into the hospital. With Julie, Dan and their eldest Camdyn still living in Southlake, the couple spent most of their time living in their daughter’s hospital room. Dan would make do on the pullout couch and Julie would nestle alongside her youngest daughter to share her bed. “I just didn’t want to let her go,” Julie says. Camdyn often stayed with Julie’s parents who live in Hurst, but she of course would come to Dallas to visit her baby sister. After saying their hellos, the two girls would run off to the playroom complete with a mini kitchen, a welcomed hospital amenity thanks to the Children’s Cancer Fund (CCF). The nonprofit invests in projects like these through their project called Childlife that helps improve patients spirits and their stay while in the hospital. vided by CCF came in every day on four paws. Blair, a golden retriever therapy dog, came in to sit on Caroline’s bed and gave her comfort while her body continued to fight against cancer. “Childlife is basically what brought her peace and joy,” Julie says. After those first 30 days, Caroline was able to come home to Southlake – still while being closely monitored by both her parents and with weekly visits back to Children’s to see her doctor. While she did have a few stints back in the hospital whenever she broke a fever, Caroline was slowly able to transition back into her favorite activities. She attended, cheer and gymnastics classes, which acted as physical therapy for building up her motor skills. She might have only been up and standing for 10 minutes, but her teachers welcomed her back with open arms. Low energy was just one of the side effects of her medications – on top of her hair falling out and an increased appetite, but the Duncans worked their way back to a new level of normal. “She lost that entire year,” Julie says. “That entire year of her being three was gone.” But it was the small stuff that gave Julie and Dan hope. Caroline loved twirling her hair, so losing it during treatment hit her hard. “When we could do her first ponytail. That was a big day,” Julie says. “We had a spa party for her sister, and I tried to put her hair up. It wasn’t very big, but getting her ponytail back was something.” SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM
On April 4, 2018, Caroline finished her chemotherapy by taking her final dose, which came as a huge relief to both Julie and Dan. “It was pretty much hour to hour until we finished up with that last pill,” Dan says. “Then we could take it at least day by day for the next year and a half.” The family celebrated the milestone by packing up the kids and taking their first family vacation since diagnosis up to Beaver Creek. Caroline had never seen the snow and spent the week learning how to ski and taking in the sights. “That was my favorite day,” Caroline says about the vacation. “We [slid] down the mountain and had cookies and hot chocolate.” The family knows the importance of celebrating those high points, but they also understand they are in a position where they can make a difference. While they were balancing two kids – one of which who was battling cancer – the Duncans felt an urge to give back. After seeing the Children’s Cancer Fund give their daughter such relief, they knew it was important to not only participate in their annual gala but also find new ways to make an impact. “You’ve never been more humbled than when you’re at a children’s hospital,” Dan reflects. “It’s the most sad…it’s really hard. A lot of people think we have it bad. And then we look around the hospital and think we have it so easy. We’re pretty fortunate and a lot of people aren’t. No matter your marital status, anything, [cancer] is indiscriminative. There are just a lot of people who have a really hard time.” The Duncans mention they always wanted to give back, but life got in the way before Caroline’s diagnosis. It wasn’t until their own situation changed that they realized they had the time. They just needed to make it a priority. “We kind of wanted to help before she got sick, but we never got around to it,” Dan says. And their extended Southlake family helped them: OUES held a snack drive that kids in the hospital could turn to after their tests. Julie partnered with one of Caroline’s friend’s moms to hold a Kendra Scott trunk show. Even the girls got involved by opening a lemonade stand where they gave the money back to children in need. But Caroline took more of a spotlight roll in giving back at the 2018 Children’s Fund Gala. After applying and being chosen as a model, she quickly became a face for the gala. “Everything in Caroline’s world must sparkle because she sparkles inside and out,” Children’s Cancer Fund Executive Director Jennifer Arthur says. “Her eyes just twinkle and she has the outfits and the shoes to match. She has gone through that and she has come out the other side and she is still smiling.” Before the event, Caroline attended several promotional events where she bonded with the day’s other models and was able to share the gala’s message with the public. When the 2018 gala came, Caroline was dropped off at the event hours before it started so her dress up could begin. Caroline says her favorite part of the day was eating all of the candy the nonprofit provided backstage, but she talks with a smile about getting her hair, nails and makeup done before taking the runway. “It’s an opportunity to have cancer survivors walk the runway. It’s about their journey to survival,” Jennifer says. “We have all those celebrities come, but they are the ones who turn over their celebrity status and hand it over to the kids. That’s what makes our event so incredible.” At the end of the event, all of the model alumni take the stage to be a part of the grand finale. This year, Caroline will return to be a part of that celebration. “The backstage and the grand finale have turned into a reunion of sorts,” Jennifer says. “These kids have grown up together. They have celebrated remission together. They love coming back each year.” Julie is also a part of the CCF Leadership Committee, so she works on the other side to help the nonprofit do all it can to help local children. “That’s always a joy to see when families turn around and say ‘What can we do for you? How can we serve you?’” Jennifer says. “[Julie] is pouring her support and her backing into Children’s Cancer Fund.”
Caroline’s Impact
The Duncans also works with close friend and local Southlake author of “The Angel Gift,” Brooke Andrews. The book acts as a comfort tool to help show children their angel is always watching over them. In each box comes a board book, a handmade stuffed angel and a note to personalize the gift to its recipient. For every 10 that Brooke sells, she gives one book to Caroline to donate to another child battling cancer. She gives them out when she goes to her monthly doctor appointments. “The Duncans are doing good through their trauma,” Brooke says. “We paired up and though it was the perfect combination.” Caroline knows the importance of giving back, but she’s also a little girl who loves lunchtime at school because it’s when she can talk to all of her best friends, an extensive list that takes a few minutes to go through. But it’s Julie and Dan that stress it takes a village to support children suffering from cancer. “Don’t be like us,” Dan says. Don’t wait until it happens to you to get involved. Because there is so much good still to be had.” Until then, Caroline’s days will be filled with dress up and playing with her sister. Every once in a while, Julie says Caroline will be recognized by a Southlake resident who asks her how she is doing or she sees a local student sporting an “OUES is for Caroline” T-shirt, and she is filled with gratitude for her community and the support they have shown. “One day, she will realize the impact she’s made on so many people,” Julie says. “It’s so humbling. ou wipe your brow and feel a rush of endorphins. Leaving your workout with a sense of accomplishment, you make that one fatal mistake: looking around. There it is, right across the parking lot. A donut shop, an ice cream place, a popsicle paradise. Suddenly, that 320 calories you burned in 30 minutes of elliptical anguish goes down the drain as you tack on an extra 700. But they cancel each other out, right? No matter the justification, there is the undeniable truth that with great proximity comes great temptation. Have you noticed that almost every major gym, fitness center and yoga studio in Southlake is located conveniently near an alluring dessert place? We have, and because we at Southlake Style are firm believers in cheat days, we compiled a list of our favorite sweat-to-sweet locations.

The Yoga Retreat & Dunkin’ Donuts While yoga has become vastly more popular to the area in the past decade, some still hold to the misconception that it is not a full workout. Like with any type of recreation, yoga classes have varying levels of difficulty. This is true at The Yoga Retreat off Southlake Boulevard, which offers a variety of heated and non-heated classes. According to its owner and founder Ranjeeta Rath, a 75 minute heated yoga class at her studio will burn up to 400 calories. This is great news for those who happen to look across the parking lot and see… a Dunkin’ Donuts. It doesn’t take an expert dietician to know that fried dough isn’t the best source of nutrients. However, it may surprise you to find that a regular glazed doughnut from Dunkin’ has only 260 calories, according to their nutrition menu. If you just got out of a heated yoga class at the Yoga Retreat, you can totally get away with that! No matter what your cheat-day choices are, Rath offers this advice: “I always like to tell people that yoga is self-care,” she says. “Make it your priority as a lifestyle and not as a hobby. Giving yourself this 60-75 mins of your time can make you a better person, a better mom/dad, better wife/ husband. We have too much stress in life, this is one way to release it. Get committed and get disciplined!” Orangetheory Fitness & Peace, Love and Little Donuts The good news: The donuts are little. The bad news: It’s almost impossible to only eat one. This is especially true when faced with Peace, Love and Little Donuts managing partner Rod Moruss’ nomination of most decadent donuts. He says there is a three-way tie between salted caramel, maple bacon and chocolate chip. That’s okay, though, as Orangetheory Fitness is only a few yards away. The vibrant fitness studio boasts effective workouts based purely on science. Ellen Latham, the creator of the Orangetheory workout, based the exercise on the idea of Excess Post Exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC). The thought is that if you challenge your body enough, you’ll work harder to breathe, thereby engaging your metabolism. Latham calls this challenging point, at which your heart rate is between 84 to 91 percent of your unique heart rate maximum, the Orange Zone. While you won’t spend your entire time in the Orange Zone, a trip to Orangetheory is sure to get your blood pumping and burn some serious calories. However, if you skipped your workout or are just looking for a healthier option, Peace, Love and Little Donuts isn’t all sprinkles and sugars. “The tree hugger, made with maple frosting, granola, a chocolate chip mix and chocolate drizzle is probably the least sweet donut as the granola mellows it out,” Moruss says. “And the maple bacon would have the most protein.”

Cinnaholic is only a parking lot away and features decadent gourmet cinnamon rolls. It may surprise you, however, to find that the luscious baked goods are actually vegan. Customers can choose from frosting flavors such as Amaretto, Chai, Cream Cheese, Marshmallow and Cake Batter, to name a few. They can top off their creation with finishing touches like brownie bites, caramel sauce, chocolate chips, cookie dough, graham crackers and so much more. If there is one thing that meat-eaters and vegans can unite upon, it’s a sweet tooth. Of course, sugar is not the best thing to intake if you’re looking to become your fittest self. Thankfully, proximity works both ways. If you were just stopping by to get a treat, maybe head a few yards over and hop on a treadmill. Anyone familiar with 24 Hour Fitness can tell you that it is far more than a room full of fitness machines. The gym has a variety of studio classes, from yoga and cycling to pilates and cardio. On top of that, 24 Hour Fitness has certified personal trainers to help you work off that last indulgence. No matter the case, you can attain your fitness goals and have room for a roll too. Pilates Barre & Steel City Pops After putting your body through a series of positions that leave your muscles shaking, even a walk across the parking lot from Pilates Barre might be a daunting task. But, if you still have it in you, Steel City Pops is just a few (hundred) feet away, beckoning you to try out the latest seasonal treat. In these winter months, when pops may not be top of mind, it would be a mistake to overlook this delicious dessert haven. The fun thing about these pops is that they can be as healthy or as much of a cheat as you want. Steel City Pops marketing director Angelia Stewart says the Buttermilk Pop has 281 calories and fully customized could be around 400 calories. On the other hand, the Strawberry Lemonade Pop is only 97 calories. “That’s the beauty of our customization station, you can throw caution to the wind and fully customize your pop or keep it simple and light,” Stewart says. “A dusting of cocoa or espresso, for example, could add a little something extra to your pop with virtually no additional calories.” After 50 minutes of pumped up tunes and total body strengthening at PilatesBarre, you’ve more than earned at least one pop! Lancarte II used his background in the Fort Worth food industry to create the concept to showcase West 7th’s vibrancy and highlight the power of whole foods. The restaurant, beaming with natural light and decorated with organic materials like wood planters, will give guests a sense of its message. Righteous Foods creates an environment that inspires diners to opt into exploring more nutritious options.
With locally-sourced and organic products, the clean eating eatery vows to provide diners with the best – and healthiest – options on the market. “We have a number of local and regional partners we’ve worked with for many years, and we source high-quality, organic ingredients, sourced responsibly, from purveyors like Niman Ranch and Stumptown Roasters,” Lancarte says. “However you decide to order, folks should know that we only serve the best.” The noon/night menu boosts those local ingredients in vibrant dishes like Meatballs and Pesto, Niman Ranch Meatballs served with chlorophyll aioli, organic herb pesto

and pickled onions, and Cubano, pork shoulder, ham, house pickles, swiss and mustard alongside yucca fries. They carry hearty flavors that will make guests forget they are treating their bodies to a meal that is actually healthy. “We want people to feel relaxed, delightfully full, but not like they need to do penance for their meal,” Lancarte says. Their morning selection proves to be worth the drive out to Fort Worth – even if it’s just to brunch. To start, guests can choose to detox with one of Righteous Foods’ drinking vinegars, cold-pressed juices or refreshing lemonades or retox with lively cocktails like the My My My Mimosa, Hibiscus Caipirinha or Himalayan Sea Salt Margarita. Then, the big question comes: sweet or savory? Their bowls – including options like the Coconut Chia Seed Pudding with mixed berries, organic banana, house granola and coconut and Paleontology – a bowl stacked with organic eggs, sweet potato, zucchini, uncured bacon, sliced avocado and toasted pistachios – prove there isn’t a wrong way to go. There are more indulgent options like the Blueberry and Banana French Toast, topped with lemon mascarpone, berries, walnuts and Grade-A maple syrup that will quench any sugar cravings responsibly, as well as more unique combinations like the Quinoa Porridge served with pickled golden raisins, organic banana, almonds, coconut and almond milk. Paired with a cappuccino or turmeric ginger chai, diners will be able to enjoy themselves while still feeling light enough to walk out and carry on with their day. “We looked at how people enjoy eating, and we designed a menu around what will taste amazing while still fueling each diner’s lifestyle,” Lancarte says. It took some time for Lancarte to curate his spread, but he has now found a way to provide something for everyone – including those with different dietary restrictions. Vegan, vegetarian, nut-free, gluten-free and lactose-free dishes can be easily found on their menu. Even if they aren’t listed as an option, Righteous Foods encourages their guests to ask their waiters if substitutions can be made. With all dishes made in-house, alternatives are always on the table. “We want people to feel like they can live their best lives at Righteous. Whether you’re a vegan, on Whole30, eating paleo or just loving tacos, we have great, delicious food for everyone,” Lancarte says. “Morning, noon, night, coffee, cocktails, sandwiches, to-go or dining in – there’s something for everyone, all day long, any time of the year.” Wholesome dining doesn’t have to be a punishment. The Daily Grind Velo Café Brings The Local Cycling And Quality Coffee Communities Together As patrons pass Cadence Cyclery on Keller’s Main Street, they might be intrigued by the collection of shiny bikes lined up in the front of the store. But as they open the door and walk past the array of wheels, they’ll find quality coffee tucked away just waiting to be enjoyed. Owner Aston Haswell opened Velo Café inside Cadence Cyclery last August with a vision of creating a hang out for local cyclists. Habitual bikers know Keller has a thriving community that takes advantage of trails like Bear Creek and participates in nearby cycling meetups. However, Aston felt there was not a local option for those who wanted to hang out and relax with friends before or after their daily ride. “The biking community is so tight knit,” Aston says. “We wanted to create a different atmosphere for our regulars.” So he sought out nearby roasters to find a coffee partner that could help them whip up quality caffeinated drinks. After sitting down with Avoca Coffee Roasters in Fort Worth, he knew he could bring their handcrafted coffee closer to his biking customers. He worked with Avoca to select the best machines, find the right products and create a comforting environment. Their menu includes the basics – espressos, macchiatos and lattes – along with different milk options and syrups. Guests can just as easily sit down and work while sipping on a lavender latte as they can grab a cappuccino to go. They do offer the occasional seasonal drink, but Aston says it was important to them to keep things simple. That way, the focus would always be on quality of their drinks and the environment they created for their patrons. “We wanted to keep it simple and somewhat traditional,” Aston says. When compared to other handcrafted drinks, their $4.25 price point for a signature latte makes it an easy go-to during a morning commute or after a long ride. As they become more popular, Velo will be bringing in more regular food vendors to help round out their morning offerings. They currently work with a local baker that brings up pastries on Saturdays. They hope to continue expanding their food selection with the help of local restaurants who also cater to healthy lifestyles – like products from Keller’s Juice Junkies. So whether you try a drink after bringing your bike in for a tune up, want to learn more about cycling from the experts or are just looking for a new latte location, Velo creates a space that brings people together.

Get Inspired Through A Visit To America’s Fittest Cities Spoiler Alert: The Top Three Aren’t In Texas
F
or many, January marks a fresh start. Whether that applies to dietary choices, fitness aspirations or personal goals such as spending more time with the kids, a clean slate could do us all some good. Gyms, workout studios and running trails usually experience a sudden, but far from permanent influx of people this time of year. However, there are some cities around the U.S. that hold a steady pattern of people actively pursuing a healthy lifestyle. This month, in honor of New Year’s resolutions past, we decided to take a look at America’s top three fittest cities, as determined by the 2018 ACSM American Fitness Index. The study takes into account resources available to the commu-

nity, the percentage of individuals who smoke, the various programs offered in the area to help people live their healthiest lives and more. Plano was top on the list for Texas, coming in at No. 12. Of the 100 cities studied, the North Texas suburb had the lowest asthma rate, at 2.4 percent. Maybe this year, Texans can bust into the top 10.
Arlington, Virginia Of course Arlington ranked No. 1, that’s where the Cowboys play! Oh, wrong one. Arlington, Virginia, is home to the Pentagon, Arlington National Cemetery and Civil War battlefields. In the midst of all of these historical sites are parks, trails and a variety of outdoor spaces for all kinds of exercise and activity. With less than six percent of the population recorded as smokers — the lowest percentage of the 100 cities listed – and almost 64 percent

reported to be in excellent or very good health, it is no wonder that this active city came in at the top of the charts for fittest city. Here’s the real kicker, though. Over 64 percent of the population reportedly gets more than seven hours of sleep per night. With the Potomac River nearby, welcoming water sports such as kayaking or paddle boarding, and the Armed Forces Cycling Classic to train for, the residents of Arlington, Virginia, have plenty of ways to stay in shape. Minneapolis, Minnesota Coming in at No. 2, this Midwestern town might surprise you. It turns out that careful city planning paid off. Minneapolis features more than 6,800 acres in the park system and 102 miles of biking and walking paths. Thanks to the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board, plans are underway to ensure that all neighborhoods have access to parks, recreation centers and other amenities that will get people outside and active. And it must be working: Almost 85 percent of the population reportedly exercised within the last 30 days. Ninety-five percent of Minneapolis residents live within 10 miles of a park, according to the Fitness Index. With a wonderful mix of activities available and differing with the seasons (Yes, people have been known to exercise in the snow), this city seems to be doing all it can to stay fit. Minneapolis.org
Washington D.C. A lot comes to mind when people think of Washington D.C. From the Lincoln Memorial to the Jefferson Memorial to a myriad of breathtaking museums, if you’re looking for a lesson in our nation’s history, the capitol has it all. For anyone who has trekked up and down the National Mall will not be surprised to find the city ranked No. 3 on the list. Residents, however, may be a little surprised as this is actually a dip in the rankings. For the past three years, Washington D.C. has held the title of “America’s Fittest City.” The city is yet another example of a parks and recreation department endeavoring to keep its community fit. The D.C. Parks Department offers a series of free workouts, walks and runs, nutrition seminars and health expos. Perhaps that’s why about 84 percent of the population was cited as having exercised in the past 30 days. Washington D.C. recorded the highest percentage of smokers among the top three cities with 14.7 percent. This was still below the average (15 percent) of the top 100 fittest cities. Of all of the cities, however, D.C. recorded the highest number of farmer’s markets per 1 million residents with 85. To put this in perspective, the average of the 100 cities was 18 per 1 million residents. So while you visit to soak up some history, take advantage of parkland and fresh veggies. Washington.org

id you know giraffes prefer a side of leaves instead of eggs in the morning, and monkeys love ripe fruits and seeds the most? Discover more about your favorite animals’ eating habits at Fort Worth Zoo’s Breakfast with the Beasts this month. This event is open to any wildlife enthusiast, but it is especially designed for little zookeepers, ages 3-10, and their families. Keep in mind that an adult must accompany children. Over a delicious meal of cereal and pastries — and plenty of coffee for mom and dad — guests will get to meet a few little furry, feathered and scaled creatures and learn about what makes them unique. Don’t worry: The animals won’t try to eat your food. Zoo staff members will be on hand to teach you about each bird, lizard and other animal and make sure everyone is on their best behavior.
Tickets to the event include admission to the zoo. So after you eat, you can visit some of the animals too big to fit around a dining room table. With more than 72 species of mammals, 148 species of birds and 172 species of ectotherms living inside its walls, it’s easy to be entertained at the Fort Worth Zoo. Have Faith (In Laughter) At ‘The Book of Mormon’ See The Humorous Tony-Winning Play About Religion And Love
M
issionaries dressed in white shirts and black ties with a holy book in one hand and a smile on their faces aren’t here to knock on your door and teach you about religion this time. Instead, the people from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be singing, dancing and entertaining you for two hours during the award-winning musical performance of “The Book of Mormon.” This comedy is about two men, Elder Kevin Price and Elder Arnold Cunningham, who try to preach the Mormon religion to a Ugandan village of people more concerned with problems of hunger, AIDS and tyrants. Guests will enjoy singing along to hits “You and Me (But Mostly Me),” “Baptize Me” and “I Am Here for You” among others from the highest-charting Broadway cast album since Disney’s “The Little Mermaid.” Since its premiere in 2011, “The Book of Mormon” has won nine Tony Awards (including Best Musical), a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album and became one of the most successful Broadway musicals in history, grossing more than $500 million. Robert Lopez, co-writer of the musical “Avenue Q,” wrote it with Trey Parker and Matt Stone, creators of the Emmy-winning animated show “South Park.” It quickly became a fan and critic favorite, including being named “The Funniest Musical of All Time” by “Entertainment Weekly.” Although, this show isn’t good for kiddos due to the explicit language, it would make for a great date night or friend outing for anyone who enjoys laughing until their sides hurt. “The Book of Mormon” pokes fun at the Mormon faith, and religion in general, in a light-hearted way that also emphasizes the importance of loving others — something we could all use a reminder of every now and then.

The Dallas Theater Center is presenting this drama about best friends and factory workers Tracey and Cynthia, who have to deal with hard times as a recession hits that challenges their friendship. The story is set in 2000 in Reading, Pennsylvania, but its message of the struggles — and the underlying racism — of the white working-class is still timely for today’s political climate. Bring tissues to this emotional show.

rophy Club mom and Instagram influencer Jessica Tondre knows the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. Through her account, @JessRunsBlessed – which has about 50,000 followers, she shares her honest fitness journey, the balance of working out with two adorable little ones and how to keep moving forward through it all. I FIRST GOT INTERESTED IN FITNESS… around the age of 15 or 16. I became interested in running and lifting weights because we did it in high school track. I also started watching what I ate about that age and stopped drinking soda. When I was in college at the University of Texas at Austin, I had a few friends that were very into nutrition and fitness and began researching more about macros (well before macros were a thing) and how to eat to live instead of live to eat. That’s when I began to run seriously as well. Not necessarily long distance but middle distance consistently. RUNNING BECAME... a form of therapy. Several miles a day in college was very helpful for my anxious personality. It also helped after children. I needed that escape and it aided with postpartum depression. WHEN I STARTED… “Jess Runs Blessed,” I originally wanted a place to share my running, fitness and health content in a “safe” environment that would be received by like-minded people. I knew people on my personal Facebook didn’t always want to see that content, and I wanted people to be able to choose to be able to see and support that. I understand that not everyone wants my elation about my 16-mile run or my weekly abs workout in their feed. I BEGAN MY BLOG… in 2015 as a chronicle of my training, my thoughts, tips and a place for me to write down fears, goals and workouts. I felt like it might help me in the future and possibly help others. I FEEL LIKE… we are an attention deficit “need it fast” world, me included, and I don’t even read the blogs I used to. That made me realize if I’m not reading them, no one is likely reading mine. Social media is where it’s at – less words, less clicks, easier to access and more at your fingertips. I still keep my blog up because it has sentimental value to me. I NOTICED I WAS GAINING AN INSTAGRAM FOLLOWING… in early 2016. That was right around when my mother-in-law bought me a GoPro. My picture quality got better, and I learned the art of tagging, timing and the nature of the Instagram running/fitness community. IN ORDER TO GROW… you have to engage with others, you have to reply back to comments and you have to spend time within the community you are trying to be “known” within. You must be authentic and ask for help. No one likes a know it all. When I began
exposing my vulnerabilities and letting people get to know me a little bit, people became interested. They were interested in my journey and in my struggles. Whether I hit my goals or failed, they were along for the ride. AS THE TIME HAS GONE ON… things have changed with my health. In 2016, I was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease. I feel like I have been able to utilize the platform as a channel to raise awareness about CKD/organ donation. My kidney disease is stable, and I do not need an organ donor mind you, but I do feel compelled to speak on this issue as the disease is often silent in so many! IF YOU WANT TO WORK TOWARD A FIT LIFESTYLE… start small. Find something active to do everyday even if it’s just a short walk. Turn everyday things into active things. For example, make brushing your teeth a calorie burn by doing squats for the duration. Don’t do something you hate, meaning if you don’t like to run, don’t run! It won’t be a “sticking” habit. IF SOMEONE’S ASKING HOW TO BECOME AN INFLUENCER… I would tell them to be patient. Instagram has changed a lot in the past few years. There’s no rhyme or reason to the algorithm as it changes often. I would also tell them to find a niche (fashion, running, fitness, etc.) and aim to belong and set themselves apart. Also, you can’t be shy. Don’t be afraid to ask someone to take your photo! They don’t know you and most likely won’t care. And get good at setting your self-timer on your phone! Also, ask, ask, ask away! Ask people with experience on Instagram and social media what works for them, what times are best for posting, what editing programs they like best, what companies are good to reach out to and what influencer communities to join! I HAVE… the best family! I’ve been married a little over 10 years to my wonderful husband Dustin who owns a financial planning firm in Southlake and have two amazing kids: Carleigh (9), who is into competitive cheerleading, and Parker (7), who loves rec baseball. It’s only fitting that we have a not so amazing dachshund, Miles (2), who is rotten to the core. I FEEL VERY FORTUNATE… to be such a regular runner and to have had so many amazing opportunities. There have been travel opportunities, sponsorships by companies and race experiences that I wouldn’t have otherwise had. Heck, even a few features in magazines like this!
