impactful moments

CREATIVE DIRECTOR Bruce Sons

In addition to all of December’s holiday fanfare, we also enjoy looking back with you at the year that was. Once again, we’ve doled out a heaping portion of 2018’s more memorable moments for you to enjoy. This year, Olivia Bennett Teeuws and Riley Dodge graced our respective February and August covers. I believe I speak for many when I recognize how special it is to watch these Southlake teens come back to their hometown roots and our pages. Maybe 20 years from now we will meet up again with Finnegan McDevitt (our April cover), and he will blow our minds with his accomplishments and 27-year-old charm? It’s clear to me, regardless of age, there is no shortage of people who dare to impact this great community. From PTO parents and elected officials to every administrator and booster in between, there lies a steadfast spirit of bettering the place we call home. Long ago, Southlake Style made a pledge to honor those most diligent in their desire and actions towards this aim. Through our first Community Impact Award in 2009, we recognized the visionary Southlake Town Square developer Brian Stebbins. Aptly re-named for its tenth iteration, this month we proudly bestow the Brian R. Stebbins Award for enduring community impact to Traci Bernard. As the President of Texas Health Southlake and as a longstanding community leader embracing many causes, Traci’s impact has been immeasurable.

BOOK

THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER BARBARA ROBINSON, JUDITH GWYN BROWN “We read the book every year around Christmastime, and it is always enjoyed by all ages.” –Ashley Pape, Office Coordinator

In honor of the holiday season, we at Southlake Style have selected our favorite yuletide media goodies for your entertainment.

TELEVISION SPECIALS MOVIES

HOLIDAY INN 1942 “I’ll put it this way, my cat is named Bing after Bing Crosby. I’ve been dreaming of a white Christmas ever since I first watched Crosby perform the classic song that was written for this film.” –Maleesa Smith, Staff Writer

A CHRISTMAS STORY 1983 “It makes me laugh every single year and makes me realize that even the best made plans can sometimes fall through, even during the holidays. And that’s OK! Not sure what the funniest part is: dogs eating the turkey, the little brother not being able to walk in his snowsuit or Ralphie’s bar of soap in his mouth!” –Nicole Tesoriero, Director of Advertising

EMMET OTTER’S JUGBAND CHRISTMAS 1977 “This aired on HBO a lot in the ’80s. Basically ‘The Gift of the Maggi’ as told by stuffed animals. At the time, Muppets and Jim Henson could do no wrong.” – Bruce Sons, Creative Director

THE HOLIDAY ARMADILLO FRIENDS (SEASON 7, EPISODE 10) “The ‘Friends’ 2000 holiday special marries a warm message about embracing different traditions with charming laughs and hilarious banter. Plus, you get to see David Schwimmer waddling around as a gigantic armadillo, and who doesn’t want that?” – Ashley Madonna, Staff Writer

THE ARTS

TUNES

THE NUTCRACKER

UP ON THE HOUSETOP

BALLET “‘The Nutcracker’ ballet is a classic holiday tradition and one that I was proud to dance in for 11 years. My favorite and most honorable part that I ever danced in the ballet was the ‘Waltz of the Flowers.’ The funniest part I danced was as one of the Rat King’s minions. Unfortunately for me, my mom still has a photo of me in my rat costume.” – Kendall Finger, Marketing & Event Coordinator

DANCE OF THE SUGAR-PLUM FAIRY PYOTR ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY “I love The Nutcracker Op. 71: Act II Tableau 3: Variation 2: ‘Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy’ by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and specifically the clarinet and bass clarinet solos in the piece. When I hear that riff, I know it’s officially Christmas.” – Laura Woodside, Advertising Art Director

18 • DEC 18

PENTATONIX “After all the Christmas memories handed down to our kids, I love the fact that our family embraced this song together from the beginning. The fact that the group is from our new home in North Texas is a bonus!” – Mike Tesoriero, Publisher

BREATH OF HEAVEN AMY GRANT “I love this song! It’s so easy to get caught up in the hustle ’n’ bustle of the holiday season, but this song slows things down. It strips everything away and takes you back to the TRUE reason for the season.” – Andrea Hatchett, Advertising Coordinator

TO SAY 2018 WAS EVENTFUL WOULD BE AN UNDERSTATEMENT From coaches returning to their roots to long-awaited businesses opening, Southlake saw exciting changes in the community. At the end of each year, we look back at Southlake’s highlights. Whether we covered them online or in print, these are the stories that stood out to us. Here’s hoping 2019 is full of as many great memories.

SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

best of.. C O M M U N I T Y BEST NEW EVENT: The first-ever FÜDTRUKY was a wild success. More than 1,500 locals came out on Cinco de Mayo to enjoy FÜD, TÜNS and BRÜs. The day’s live entertainment and food trucks made it a memorable Saturday we soon won’t forget. In fact, we already have next year’s event on the books: May 11. BEST COMMUNITY CHALLENGE: The city started 2018 focused on its community’s health with the LiveFit Southlake Wellness Challenge. with a Health Fair Wellness Challenge Kickoff on January 13, the twomonth initiative included lunch and learns, lectures, walks with the mayor and health-centered workshops. The challenge ended with the annual Superhero 5K and Fun Run on March 17 at Bicentennial Park. BEST SMALL CITY: In a recent WalletHub report, 1,200 U.S. cities with populations between 25,000 and 100,000 were ranked on 40 different indicators. These include school-system quality, housing costs and safety. Southlake found itself in the report’s 99th percentile, receiving a No. 1 ranking for housing costs and No. 4 for homeowner rate compared to the other evaluated cities. BEST GRASSROOT INITIATIVES: Southlake spent a lot of time taking action this year. Grassroot initiatives took form in many ways but several stood out such as the dozens of local businesses rallying to support GRACE after their food pantry was destroyed in a fire, the lemonade stand to raise money for a Jack D. Johnson elementary student or Lynne and Olivia Hein’s dress drive to support hurricane victims. BEST OUTDOOR ADVENTURE: Grapevine Lake offers plenty of outdoor adventures for those who want to try something new and embrace the natural beauty of their surroundings. Hikers can jump on one of the many trails that wrap around the lake, cyclists can stop by the “Biker Lot” after a long day biking everything from SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

lake cliffs to shores, horseback riders can saddle up with the Widowmaker Trail Rides on Walnut Grove trail, boat enthusiasts can try their hand at catching a few largemouth bass and kayakers can rent equipment Lonestar Adventure Sports before paddling out on the lake. It also featured the largest floating waterpark in Texas, Altitude H20, this past summer. No matter what you do when you are there, there’s a way to do it in style. BEST THRILLS YEAR ROUND: Epic Waters in Grand Prairie opened its doors on January 12, giving locals the opportunity to splash year-round. The 80,000 square-foot park features a retractable roof, so locals don’t have to check the weather before heading out the door for a day in the water. With 11 waterslides, an outdoor wave pool, an activity pool, a children’s area, a FlowRider surf simulator and lazy river, it’s a great option for birthday parties or just a fun way to brighten up a cold winter day. BEST HOMECOMING: The childhood prodigy Olivia Bennett Teeuws moved back to Southlake this year. People may remember her for opening her own studio in Southlake Town Square at the young age of 12, appearing on “Oprah” and her several features in national publications like “Teen People” and “Southern Living.” She now focuses on painting for charity to raise money for those causes close to her heart while also raising her son with her husband, John. BEST NEW WORKPLACE: Spaces Granite Place now offers Southlake locals a comfortable and flexible coworking space perfect for a variety of business models. Whether you need a comfortable place to meet with a client or want a fixed spot to host your workstation, Spaces has the space you need. They offer everything from audiovisual equipment to food and beverage services all in their sleek workplace environment. DEC 18 • 23

best of.. C O M M U N I T Y BEST PILOT PARENT: Col. Gavin Tade is the group commander of the 944th Mission Support Group. He used to fly fighter jets, but is now spending more time in the cockpit of a Boeing 777 for American Airlines. Did we mention that he is also a very proud Dragon dad? When he isn’t jetting across the nation or commanding 1,900 people, he is at home with his wife, Angie, and their four kids: Camryn, Trevor, Dalton and Messina. He has been known to pop into Carroll classrooms in full fighter pilot gear with a Carroll Dragon T-Shirt underneath. BEST NAME CHANGE: Jay Armstrong, the Dragon’s Athletic Assistant for Sports Information and Social Media Relations, is a complete representation of Dragon Pride. And we aren’t the only ones who think so. The Dragon Alumni Network awarded Jay with this year’s Outstanding Alumni award. Going forward, the award will be given Jay’s namesake, forever representing the commitment, pride and tradition that the Carroll grad has always strived to protect.

Texas Competition. She was also awarded the Alpha Lifestyle & Fitness award during the preliminary rounds. She took the stage to strut her stuff in the swimsuit competition; talked about her platform, Walk the Talk, during the on-stage question round; wowed the crowd during the evening wear competition; and caught everyone’s attention during the talent portion when she performed contemporary clogging. EmmaKate was joined by four other North Dallas contestants in the top five: Miss Frisco took fourth runner-up, Miss Richardson third runner-up, Miss Park Cities first runner-up and Miss Dallas, Madison Fuller, was crowned Miss Texas 2018. BEST BOWTIE: Finnegan McDevitt rocked the cover of our April issue with a blazer, a Carroll pin on his lapel, green pants and a striking pink bowtie. The second grader was our youngest ever Tastemaker, and he is letting his voice — and his style — be known as one of Carroll ISD’s Bond Builders. BEST WAVE MAKER:

BEST WORKING PUP:

PeopleResults CEO and Southlake mom Patti Johnson knows how to lead. From balancing her dayto-day responsibilities to consulting clients such as Fortune 100 companies Microsoft, 7-Eleven, Frito-Lay and McKesson to leading our 2018 Women’s Luncheon panel and acting as our keynote, she’s making herself known and making waves everywhere she goes.

Officer Nathaniel Anderson and K-9 partner Duco received the national award for Top Patrol Dog at the North American Police Working Dog Association. The pup joined the squad back in 2015, and he has been protecting Southlake ever since. When he’s not patrolling the city, he enjoys meeting community folks and educating them about how to stay safe — with the help of Officer Anderson, of course. BEST FACEBOOK GROUP: The Foodie Feed, created by Southlake mom and PR guru Jennifer Weaver, gives locals the opportunity to learn more about the local dining scene while also voicing their opinions about nearby restaurants. Whether you are looking for the best Cuban sandwich in town or a brunch spot in Fort Worth, this group of foodies is ready with recommendations. BEST CROWNING MOMENT: EmmaKate Few, Miss Southlake 2018 and one of our 2018 Tastemakers, walked away as the second runner-up at this year’s Miss

SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

BEST BFF TEAM: Clever Bear Leathers owners Chelsea Salomone and Jaymi Bear didn’t intend on starting a hot jewelry company when they created their first pair of earrings two Decembers ago, but they have now grown their Southlake operation into a successful business. Their products are available in over 65 stores nationwide and their Etsy following has grown exponentially over the past two years. You can find their products at Gameday in Southlake and The Gift Shop, and you also might have seen them featured on “The Real Housewives of Dallas” this past season. DEC 18 • 25

best of.. S C H O O L BEST SIXTH-GRADE SWEETHEARTS:

BEST DRAGON PILE:

New Dragon Football head coach Riley Dodge and his wife Alexis met in sixth grade while both living in Southlake and attending Carroll ISD. Sure, they were friends, but it wasn’t until their junior year of college that the two reconnected. The couple got married in 2013 and now have two beautiful boys who love cheering on their dad during Dragon games.

Dragon Baseball clinched the 5-6A district championship in April and went on to take home the state title. In all the excitement of the win, the varsity team ran out and created a dogpile in the middle of the field. The celebrations continued when they returned home from Round Rock and were honored at a community rally.

2018

BEST ACTRESS:

BEST DYNAMIC DUO: Fifth grade Dragon Youth Football players Beckett Ruiz and Spencer Stables leave everything on the field. Beckett is legally blind and Spencer relies on Cochlear implants to hear, but they don’t let that stop them. Spencer has proudly stated that he “tackles everyone so Beckett can do his thing.” BEST NEW WHEELS:

Carroll ISD showed off their new school buses a few weeks before the new school year. The new vehicles, which were purchased as part of the 2017 Bond Program, are equipped with new seat belts, making them compliant with Texas’ new safety legislation. The Bond Builders, who loaded up on the buses while sporting their green hardhats, were the first to try out the new CISD vehicles on July 9. The district plans to continue rolling in these buses over the next five years. BEST SCHOOL PUBLICATION: The second edition of Inside Carroll won the “Best of Category” award at the Star Awards Celebration at the Texas School Public Relations Association annual conference. The publication, a collaboration between Carroll ISD and Southlake Style, strives to give the community an inside look into the district, highlight student and staff achievements and show readers what it really means to be a Dragon! BEST RECORD BREAKER: Stanford freshman and Carroll grad Jack Levant broke SC Junior Nationals records last December in the men’s 500 freestyle. Now, he’s a member of Team USA for the 2018-19 season and is set to attend the 2019 World Championships in South Korea. It’s safe to say this Dragon can swim. BEST HISTORY MAKER: Varsity soccer standout Madison Martin will go down in the books as the first ever Dragon varsity female football player. The two-sport star was also the first female to score for Dragon Football in Carroll history. As one of three kickers, Madi proved that she could keep up with the boys and contribute some necessary PATs during games.

Dallas Summer Musicals recognized several students during their High School Musical Theatre awards in May, one of which was Devan DeLugo who was up for Best Actress for her portrayal of Dainty June in Carroll Senior’s “Gypsy.” The senior, who was also named one of our Five Ones To Watch, will continue to pursue her craft as she continues on her educational career.

BEST COACH ADDITIONS: We had a lot of homecomings this year, and we’re not talking about the kind with mums. Former Dragon quarterback Riley Dodge returned to Southlake as head coach of the football team. New Lady Dragons head basketball coach Robyn McCoart spent her fair share of time playing on a Dragon court. Teresa Dunn, the new Lady Dragon head volleyball coach was never a student in CISD, but her hiring was a homecoming nonetheless as she was an assistant varsity coach for the Lady Dragons in 2016. As the saying goes, once a Dragon, always a Dragon. BEST TEACHERS: Every year, one teacher from each CISD campus is awarded the Teacher of the Year. After all 11 schools have named their recipient, the district gives one elementary and one secondary teacher the highest honor by awarding them the CISD Teachers of the Year. Tercel Herreman, Old Union Elementary, and Allison Loftin, Carroll Senior High, were the 2017-2018 winners. BEST ARRIVAL IN STYLE: A few local elementary students made a lavish entrance on the last few days of school by riding in on a Southlake fire truck. The firefighters picked up the participants, whose parents won the department’s donated rides in PTO or nonprofit auctions, loaded them into the fire truck, gave them a SFD T-shirt and drove them to school. After the firefighters turned on the lights and started bumping the sirens, the students’ classes met them outside to welcome them.

best of.. F O O D BEST NEW SPECIAL: Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille opened their doors in February adding a new lux dining establishment to town. While their menu is full of elegant offerings, their Famous Pork Chop lunch special lets locals enjoy this hearty dish at an approachable price. Their lunch-cut portion served with whipped potatoes and homemade applesauce is available for $14.95 Fridays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., making it an easy choice for a business meeting or lavish lunch out. BEST CHEF’S COAT: Ted Bilsky, the owner of Scratch Kitchen and one of our 2018 Tastemakers, doesn’t need a name tag. His colorful chef’s coats speak for themselves. He’s just one of the many community members who does good and looks good doing it. BEST NEW PIZZERIA: Delucca, North Texas’ first rodizio de pizza – a concept that is extremely popular in Brazil and resembles a churrascarias steak house’s service, opened its doors earlier this year. With an array of gourmet pies to choose from and beautiful cocktails to help wash them down, it is the new destination location for families and date night alike. They just opened a second location in Dallas’ Design District and are in the process of opening more over the next few years. BEST RESTAURANT COLLABORATION: This year, local restaurants joined forces with Black Door Renovation and GRACE to host Dine to Donate, a way for diners to give back while eating out. With the leadership of Rena Frost from Mac’s on Main, from April 13 to 22, Boi Na Braza, Copeland’s of New Orleans, Great Scott, Loveria Caffe, Mac’s on Main, Mason & Dixie and Next Bistro offered prix fixe menus with $39-$49 price points with up to $8 going back to GRACE programs. In addition, Grapevine Craft Brewery donated $2 for every GRACE American Wheat Beer sold at their taproom in April. BEST PLATING: The prettiest dish we saw this year wasn’t served on a plate at all. Rather, Lime Bar & Kitchen serves their Lobster Pho in a vast bowl. Served with a well-rounded base of chicken or beef broth, delicate noodles and finely cut vegetables, the real winner of this dish is the entire lobster included in the entree. The pho is just as tasty as it is beautiful, and it’s perfect for sharing. BEST CLASSIC DINING: While we spent some time this September looking back at Roanoke’s pathway to becoming “The Unique Dining Capital of Texas,” we also were able to learn more about The Classic Cafe, Roanoke’s iconic New American restaurant. It has been serving quality plates for more than 25 years all in a cozy environment. SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

JEFF GORDON CHILDREN'S FOUNDATION HOSTS LUNCH WITH A LEGEND Former NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon has the third-most all-time NASCAR Cup Series wins. In 1998, he was named to NASCAR's "50 Greatest Drivers" list. He has appeared on Top 25 and Top 5 lists across multiple outlets, and while his accolades go on, Gordon's biggest race is helping find a cure for pediatric cancer. Out of this passion, he founded Jeff Gordon's Children Foundation, a nonprofit geared toward raising funds for pediatric cancer research. On November 3, Southlake residents were able to join these efforts by attending Lunch With a Legend at the Hilton Southlake Town Square. This was the first time the event was held in Texas. LOCAL KIDS GIVE BACK BY PASSING OUT TREATS TO HARBORCHASE RESIDENTS While lots of local kiddos went from house to house to collect sweets this Halloween, one set of kids gave back to others to celebrate the holiday. On October 30, Hailey and Ryan Cawley, Abram and Ava Montoya, Sienna and Reid Wheeler and Abbey and Eva Walker handed out candy to HarborChase residents. Erica Cawley, mother of Hailey and Ryan, called HarborChase and asked if the eight children could pass out candy to the seniors along with a few drawings they created. Both the kids and the seniors got a kick out of the reverse trick or treating, making it an event everyone there is sure to remember. Erica has already said she wants to bring the kids back next Halloween. But she also wanted to do more. So she arranged the kids to come back in honor of National Young Readers Day to read to seniors. Sounds like this is the start of a beautiful partnership.

CITY COUNCILMAN JOHN HUFFMAN HOSTS NEW SOUTHLAKE PODCAST City Council Place 5 John Huffman wears a whole lot of hats. Now, he is sporting one more: podcast host. He is sharing the city’s stories in a whole new way on “Southlake This Week With John Huffman.” As an avid podcast listener, Huffman was interested in creating a show that had a local slant to it. He says he wanted to highlight what's happening in Southlake and let locals learn a little bit more about their city and its residents. While he does already have a big social presence – whether it be through his Facebook Live videos with City Council Place 2 Shawn McCaskill or his family’s reviews of local restaurants – he saw an opportunity to expand on that and reach listeners through this new medium. His weekly podcast, released on Wednesdays or Thursdays, includes restaurant reviews, community event coverage and much more. At the end of each episode, he sits down with a notable local and has a conversation with them about their role in Southlake. In his first three episodes, he chatted with Mayor Laura Hill, Southlake DPS Public Information Officer Brad Uptmore and Texas State Rep. Giovanni Capriglione. The podcast is available on iTunes, Google Play and SoundCloud, so it’s easy to tune in and stay up-to-date on what’s happening in Southlake.

T

hose who know Texas Health Southlake President Traci Bernard recognize the energy she brings into every room she enters. Whether she’s sitting down at a board meeting or organizing a nonprofit event, Traci carries the same wide smile and sense of focus with her. It’s what her friends and colleagues have come to admire and sets expectations for what it’s like to have her on their team: excellence, intelligence and heart. People may assume Traci, the owner of arguably one of the largest rolodexes in the area, has always been integrated into the fabric of Southlake. But it was her career that originally brought her to Texas. And it’s her giving nature and love for people that have made her a pillar of the city.

GETTING TO SOUTHLAKE Traci was born in a little farm town: Paris, Illinois. She grew up wanting to be a nurse and, with the help of her parents’ upbringing, developed a strong conviction that she could pursue any career she put her mind to. Quickly after graduating and joining the medical field, Traci found herself gravitating toward leadership positions in healthcare. From a young age, she accepted coordinator, facilitator and director jobs as they became available, which took her across the Midwest. Through those different positions, she learned how to create a positive health system environment. In the late ’90s, her career led her to North Texas where she joined the Baylor Health Care System as the Vice President of Operations. After getting settled, she wanted to learn more about the people who called the Metroplex their home and how to make an impact on their lives. She joined the Grapevine-Colleyville Chamber of Commerce and started looking for ways to give back. As a stage-four malignant melanoma survivor, she volunteered with Cancer Care Services of North Texas. She then saw an opportunity to get involved with the American Heart Association and Go Red For Women – another cause close to home with her mother, brother and grandfather all having heart problems. “[It] is a really personal issue for me,” Traci says. “That was really where my heart was at the time.” So it’s no surprise that when her next career step brought her to Southlake, she carried that same vision with her.

PLANTING ROOTS With almost 20 years of experience in the industry, Traci joined Texas Health Southlake as president a year after it opened its doors. She came in when the hospital was in the red and needed a leader. She sought out the position because of the opportunity to build up a hospital, shape the leadership team and form the culture of the space.

“I can’t be micromanaged. It clips my wings and I will never fly. And I am not a good micromanager,” Traci says. “So I do better with people who are independent thinkers. I’ve learned to let people be the person they want to be, which gives them the freedom to get to that outcome the best way they can.” That’s not to say Traci sits and watches from the sidelines. She’s the first one to jump in and give her all to the project in front of her. GRACE’s Executive Director Shonda Schaefer knows that to be true after working with her on the nonprofit’s capital campaign and clinic. “Traci gets things done and she gets things done quickly,” Schaefer says. “She’s become a real mentor to me. I value her leadership style so much because there’s not a job that’s too small for her, but

she can also organize some pretty intense projects. She’s team-focused and she’s a servant leader.” While she may be busy, she is intentional with her presence and energy. So the people she surrounds herself with know they have her full attention. Dr. Sara Suttle, who works closely with Traci as a physician at Texas Orthopedic Specialists, says she’s learned a lot from how Traci treats others in both her professional and personal relationships. “You think you have a very deep personal relationship every time you talk to her,” Dr. Suttle says. “She really engages and makes everyone feel as important as they should be made to feel.” It’s her positive energy that inspires others to give more of themselves to causes important to them. Dr. Suttle saw that for herself after Traci connected her with the GRACE clinic at the GRACE gala a few years back. At the event, Dr. Suttle made mention that she wanted to get involved and Traci immediately brought her over to Shonda to make the connection. Traci saw an opportunity to open a door for someone else, and she didn’t wait to make it happen. One of the benefits of being highly involved in the community is the network Traci has formed. And she uses those relationships for good by creating connections for her organizations and her hospital to help find everything from volunteers to speakers to potential donors. “She can see a need and know 10 people who can fill that need and then finds someone whose personality can fit the job,” Dr. Suttle says. The people on the other side of the phone know she’s not asking them anything she hasn’t asked of herself. She’s the one who will be there working alongside them to see the task through to completion. “She leads by example,” First Financial Bank Southlake President Mark Jones says. “She understands the community and what the needs are in the community. She’s more than willing to roll up her sleeves and do whatever it takes to make her project successful.” Next time you run into Traci — be it at the hospital or at a gala, don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation about how you can get involved in the community. Her heart for giving and captivating energy can be felt immediately. It may just inspire you to make a little more time in your schedule for giving back. Southlake Style is honored to recognize Traci this year for her work and her impact she’s made on the community. She is the first recipient of the Brian R. Stebbins Award, presented to her on November 29. As Schaefer says: “It’s the year of Traci, and she deserves it.”

As the city’s shopping and dining hub, Southlake Town Square has identifiably made an impact on this small town. When it opened in March 1999, it promised to bring big brands and retail opportunities to the area and enhance Southlake’s sense of community for locals and tourists alike. Over the past 19 years, it has become the heart of the city. To recognize that impact, we are renaming our Community Impact Award to the Brian R. Stebbins Award, the late founder and developer of Southlake Town Square and the first recipient of this award. We hope to honor his influence still felt in Southlake as well as recognize locals who are striving to affect positive change in town through their efforts.

ADVANCED ENDODONTICS OF TEXAS All-in-All Great Experience

Exceptional

A special thanks to the professionals at Advanced Endodontics of Texas! They were able to see me the same day that I was in so much pain. From the moment I walked in, I was treated well, everything was explained thoroughly and the procedure was as good as a root canal can be. Special thanks to Dr. Attar. He was great walking me through the procedure both beforehand and along the way. He truly made it as painless as possible. Also, Dr. Attar took the time to discuss long-term treatment on the area if needed. All-in-all a great experience, and I would recommend to anyone needing treatment. -Sal S.

Unfortunately, I’d already had a couple of root canals before my visit to Advanced Endodontics of Texas. In fact, it was one of the previous root canals that developed a problem and had to be redone by Dr. Walsh. As far as root canals go, it was an awesome experience. The procedure was explained thoroughly and completely, there was absolutely no pain, the office and staff made me very comfortable and the follow up was just outstanding. -Augie B.

High Praise Dr. Turner was the greatest! She was warm, honest and took all the time needed to explain and cover all of my options. I rate her above every dental experience I’ve ever had. -Glen S.

Understanding and Helpful

Unlike Any Other Experience

I am very pleased. This was the first fitting I’ve had in which the sales associate really seemed to understand my concerns and issues I have with my current bras. The sales associate took her time and was very understanding and helpful. I love my new bras and look forward to coming back and finding another one soon. –Karola S.

My experience was amazing! I used to go to a different well-known retailer, but always felt kind of gross walking in the door due to the posters and images everywhere. Walking in to Allure was wonderful and free from the sexuality that is so dominant in the other store. The staff was experienced and helped me and my friends all get fitted and find the perfect bras. I had to exchange one of mine a few days later, and they were fantastic to work with. The woman who helped me was fabulous and helped me find my dream bra! I was so happy with my experience at Allure. I will be coming back again and again. And I will be telling all of my other friends about Allure! –Jeanette Y.

Great Experience The sales associate was very knowledgeable and provided me with several options. I felt at home in the shop. It was a great experience! –Jamie W.

Considerate Employees My sales associate was very nice and helpful. She made me very comfortable and made sure I was happy with all the bras. She asked before touching me and would always make sure I was okay with what she was doing. I would recommend the company to anybody! –Erin B.

THOMAS & SHARON MICHAEL | DFW Elite Realty Wow! What a Team!

Happy Repeat Client

Sharon and Thomas helped us on two occasions, once as a buyer and again as a seller. We've moved five times and working with the Michaels has been hands down the best experience yet. No one, and I mean no one, knows the Southlake market better than Thomas and Sharon. No one will work harder for you. They are a true partner. -Douglas Sandklev

When I first met Thomas and Sharon Michael in 2012, they explained to me their job was more than just sales and they discussed the importance of their client's experience. Now having bought and sold three properties with them, I see the exceptional level of service they provide and I would never consider other representation. Their deep knowledge of the real estate industry is like no other realtor in DFW. Their ability to market your home is second to none. If you are looking to buy or sell your home, I highly encourage you to utilize this power house team. -Cherish Thomas

Knows What’s Best Wow. I have never seen such a display of expertise and customer service from professionals like this. We chose Thomas and Sharon to sell our home and it took them all of a few hours. Thomas knew what was best for us, set our opening price and dates strategically, packed our open house with over 100 visitors, had an offer within six hours, four offers on the first day and a counter-offer the following day for more than our asking price. Thomas & Sharon exceeded our expectations, leaving us as very happy clients. I highly recommend working with this team. -Dan Quinn

hile Texas holidays don’t often reflect Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas” or “Let it Snow” lyrics, locals still find plenty of ways to fill their home with that famous seasonal cheer. Sure, you have your go-to house lights and plastic tree, but this year, treat yourself to something fresh with the Mark Roberts Santa’s Sleigh, available at Frontgate. The limited edition collectible is handmade out of wood and forged iron while keeping an effortless energy about it. Carefully crafted with hand-painted and hand-finished details, this home accent becomes the focal point of every room it graces. Thanks to its neutral color palette – apart from the red and green Merry Christmas decal, it can be easily inte-

grated into the rest of your home’s decorations. Whether it is next to the chestnuts roasting on an open fire or under the mistletoe, this sophisticated sleigh elevates everything around it. This polished piece may represent the hardest working vehicle on Christmas Eve, but it should be stored indoors for safekeeping. There are still plenty of ways to play with the placement of the spirited accessory: It can act as a standalone item, showcase your life-size Christmas figurines or hold your presents until the 25th. With proper care, the sleigh can last for years and become your family’s new holiday cherished decoration passed down generation after generation. It proves that with a little bit of whimsy and a dash of merriment, your home can echo the essence of those classic Christmas tunes. We wish you a merry Christmas!

The Circus Comes To Town Circo Opens Its First Texas Location

F CIRCO 2619 McKinney Ave., Suite 120 Dallas 469.378.5039 CircoTX.com

82 • DEC 18

or more than 40 years, the Maccioni family has wined and dined the rich and famous at their ensemble of well-known New York restaurants. In collaboration with the foodie family, White ROC Hospitality Group has brought one of their celebrated concepts down south to provide superior service and sophisticated plates to Dallas. Circo, an upscale Italian coastal cuisine restaurant and Uptown’s newest fine dining destination, opened its doors in September with some ritzy features. Named after the Italian word for circus, this luxurious location goes out of its way to ensure every dining experience is a showstopper.

“The people in Dallas love to eat, drink and have a wonderful time,” CEO of White ROC Hospitality Group Lauren Santagati says. “We think Circo will be the perfect addition to the Dallas dining scene.” The two-story, 25,000-square-foot venue brings a modern feel to the restaurant brand by adding chic finishes to the space’s sleek interior. As guests walk past the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Sirio Maccioni mural crafted with hanging chains and a spiral staircase enclosed with a sparkling chandelier leading to their second floor’s Members Lounge and Circo Beach, which features a glass-bottom pool, they will start to understand how all the details come together to create a deluxe night out.

SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

LOCALFLAVOR review

“We want our guests to feel entertained from the moment they walk through the doors and are welcomed by the maître d’,” Santagati says. After taking in the elaborate entrance, guests will walk past the elegant bar and exhibition wine cellar, glass-enclosed garde manger station working away on cold dish preparations and the dining room’s swanky seating arrangements and décor – including somehow tasteful monkey lighting fixtures. Once settled, their knowledgeable staff stands ready to answer all questions about the concept’s history, suggest wine recommendations from their close to 200-bottle selection and advise diners how to build out their meal. Their coursed menu invites patrons to order an array of small plates to get a true sampling of their offerings. There’s no grander way to start the night than with the Royal Platter: half a Maine lobster, Alaska king crab leg, jumbo prawn, east coast oysters and tuna sashimi. With premium seafood flown in every day, all their high-quality proteins are guaranteed to come out fresh. “Our Royal Platter housed with the ‘crudo’ section of our menu is truly one of a kind as it showcases the quality of ingredients one can find at Circo,” Santagati says. Made in-house with organic flours, the pasta dishes also carry that same freshness found in the seafood. The Duck Tordelli Au Jus, accompanied by butternut squash and Saba wine, balances the sweetness of the sauce with the heartiness of the ingredients all while encased in delicate pasta. The Ravioli Mama Egi, made with Buffalo ricotta cheese, spinach, butter and sage, provides that sense of warmth pasta lovers crave in their favorite dishes. Continue the night with one of their mains. Diners can choose to enjoy one of their steaks or market catches, grilled to perfection, or can select one of their well-balanced entrees. The snapper, served with fregola sarda primavera and orange saffron burre blanc, easily flakes apart while maintaining all of its creamy flavors. The Dover Sole Alla Mugnaia, served with a lemon butter sauce, proves a well-cooked fish doesn’t need to be overcomplicated to be indulgent. Finish the night with one of their classic or seasonal desserts. Sirio Maccioni popularized crème brûlée after opening his first New York location in 1974, and he soon became recognized for this luxurious sweet. Now, diners can enjoy the signature sweet and learn the secret behind its creation – the recipe is embossed on the bottom of the dish. Or enjoy a traditional Italian treat like their signature tiramisu, served in a sphere. It’s the ideal location to celebrate a special occasion or treat yourself as another great year comes to a close. Whether you come for cocktails by the bar or savor each course, each visit promises to be a spectacle of sophistication.

STACKS Of Flavor This Biscuit House Steps Up Roanoke’s Comfort Food Game The brothers behind Craft & Vine have done it again – but this time with a country-cooking twist. Co-owners Tim and Matt Nystrom opened STACKS Biscuit House last month, and they have been serving up fresh sammies (sandwiches), bennies (benedicts) and a whole lot of flavor ever since. It all started when Tim and Matt visited Asheville, North Carolina, two years ago. After standing in a line running out the door for speciality biscuits, the Nystroms knew they had to bring the concept back to Texas. “We were immediately in a trance upon arriving,” Matt says. “There truthfully isn’t anything like STACKS in the area.” Even STACKS’ interior stands out. As soon as locals step through the restaurant’s doors, they will be transported to a different sense of place. With a retro feel reminiscent of a ’70s record store and vintage furniture spread throughout, each stop in feels fresh. That freshness carries through their mouthwatering eats. Diners should come hungry and ready to make some tough choices, with their menu offering delightful benedict creations, like the Boardwalk Benedict served open-faced with Creole aioli, a Gulf Lump Crab Cake, poached egg and Tabasco hollandaise. They also have a variety of speciality sandwiches, like the Jimmy Mac stuffed with meatloaf, seared mac and cheese, fried onion rings and wild mushroom gravy. For a bit more freedom, guests can choose to build their biscuit at the bar full of gravy, salsa, honey, butter and jam choices. To try more of these new flavor combinations, dive into one of their gravy flights – presented just like a beer flight. “As much as I love the sammies and bennies, it is hard for me to steer away from ordering gravy flights with Bacon Jalapeno, Smoked Tomato and Kona Red Eye Gravy,” Matt says. “Accompany that with some fresh Cornmeal Chive Biscuits and Bacon and Bleu Cheese Butter from the STACKS bar, and I’m content.” STACKS not only tastes good but also does good for those in the area. It’s already giving back to the community and providing another attraction to the city’s growing foodie district. “We have high hopes and big hearts for this concept,” Matt says. “It is from a giving heart that we opened up our doors to Roanoke and the surrounding area. Whether it is serving Biscuits and Gravy at local food banks through our charity STACKS LOVE or inviting you to try our food rather than calling you to action, STACKS adds yet another unique dining concept to the Unique Dining Capital of Texas.” So order up a Peach Sangria and break bread with other local foodies by stopping into STACKS, where everything is gravy.

Carolyn Morris (left) lost her husband James when he died from PKD in his 40s before transplantation was a viable option. Their only daughter Jamie (right) inherited the disease and needed a kidney transplant in her 40s. It served her well for 12 years, but now it’s failing. Carolyn has dedicated her life to raising money to help find a cure for PKD, raising more than $2 Million for the PKD Foundation to underwrite research. See Where the Christmas Magic Happens Destinations Inspired by Classic Christmas Movies

D

espite the twinkling lights and festive trimmings, it can sometimes be hard to feel Christmassy in Texas. Perhaps you’ve heard Bing Crosby croon “White Christmas” on the radio as you adjust your car’s air conditioning, or maybe the closest you’ve gotten to Frosty the Snowman was the inflatable in your front yard. No matter the case, Texans can always retreat to Christmas movies to summon up some festive feelings. This year, do one better by visiting the filming location of a classic tale, a location rumored to be the inspiration of a Christmas classic or a lookalike we dug up to satisfy your need for a real “Holiday Inn.”

90 • DEC 18

Seneca Falls Seneca Falls, New York, has two claims to fame: It is heralded as the birthplace of women’s rights and it is rumored to be the inspiration of the fictional town of “Bedford Falls, New York” in “It’s a Wonderful Life.” What suffragists Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott accomplished in the small town paved the way for women to vote, so even if you aren’t a fan of “It’s a Wonderful Life,” this historical destination is definitely still worth a visit. If you travel here around Christmas, however, it would be impossible to miss the town’s other claim to fame. That, in part, is due to a massive annual festival held each year called, “It’s A Wonderful Life Festival.” The four-day festival has over 60 events, exhibits and activities featured on its schedule. Attendees have multiple opportunities to meet actors from the movie and get autographs. Swing dance lessons,

roasted chestnuts, tours and museum exhibits abound. The similarities between the real and fictional towns are listed on the festivals website, but locals just point to the iconic truss bridge. It’s almost identical to the one in the film where George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart) encounters Clarence (Henry Travers). Additionally, both towns are mill towns and the architecture bears a striking resemblance. For the people of Seneca Falls, it’s not a rumor that movie director Frank Capra was inspired by Seneca Falls. For them, it’s a hard fact. TheRealBedfordFalls.com

Vermont Fans of both Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas” and “Holiday Inn” can quickly point out that the movie sets are the same. The Columbia Inn featured in “White Christmas” is set in the fiction town of Pine Tree, Vermont. The older film is written to take place somewhere in Connecticut. Despite the inn only being a movie set at Paramount Pictures, fans will all agree: They would stay there in a heartbeat. While you will not encounter Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, Vera-Ellen, Fred Astaire or Marjorie Reynolds, we found a place that will appeal to all classic romantics. The Inn at Manchester in Manchester Center, Vermont, has striking similarities to the films’ iconic set. The first and most prominent parallel is the exterior aesthetic. The main house is large, white and features a large front porch, much like the Holiday Inn. In “White Christmas,” viewers are able to see a much larger portion of the set features a large room – large enough to hold a battalion and their families – with a stage. In the movie, this room is housed in the barn adjacent to the Columbia Inn, which brings us back to the real-life Inn at Manchester. The Vermont inn has a large red barn set up for events such as wedding receptions. In the winter, the entire property is swathed in snow – a pivotal part of “White Christmas’” plot obviously. Cuddle up next to a fireplace at the Inn at Manchester and dream of Bing Crosby… singing about “counting blessings instead of sheep.” InnatManchester.com

New York City There are so many Christmas movies that take place in the Big Apple, but for the sake of brevity, we’ll only point out three major stops. The first, of course, is Macy’s Herald Square on 34th Street. The pinnacle place of “Miracle on 34th Street,” this Macy’s is the backdrop for a film that has us convinced that Santa lives in New York City. If you’re in the market for a Christmas-movie themed department store spree, you’ll get bonus points for stopping by Gimbels, where Buddy the Elf (Will Ferrell) was briefly employed in the movie “Elf.” Speaking of “Elf,” remember the scene where Santa barely makes it out of Central Park and his sleigh knocks over a statue? That statue was at Bethesda Fountain, one of the most iconic spots in the park. It’s always featured in a scene of “Home Alone 2,” so two birds, one stone! And of course, to hit peak Christmas spirit levels, pay a visit to the Rink at Rockefeller Center. Also seen in “Elf” – the movie is basically a Christmas tourism ad for NYC – the rink has the best view of the iconic, enormous Christmas tree. TheRinkatRockCenter.com

An Evening Of Enchant-ment! Step Into A Winter Wonderland At The Magical Enchant Christmas

rinches, stay home. Enchant Christmas at Globe Life Park is only for those who are ready to experience the wonder of the holiday season! Complete with millions of sparkling Christmas lights, festive treats and plenty of activities for the entire family, Enchant is one of the most spectacular holiday events in Texas. You’ll be dazzled by the 100-foot tall Christmas tree; the artisans’ market featuring goods from 100 local artists including home décor, jewelry, ornaments and more; and daily live music and entertainment on the main stage. Of course, no holiday celebration is complete without an appearance from the big guy himself! The kids will love sharing their wish list with Santa Claus and listening to stories read aloud by Mrs. Claus. There is just one very important rule: Be sure to fuel up on sugary holiday sweets, like hot cocoa and cookies, to keep up your energy throughout the enchanted evening.

94 • DEC 18

Enchant first came to Arlington in 2017 when more than 250,000 people stopped by to experience the magical event. This year, there will be several new improvements and changes. For starters, the entire event will be held inside, so even the weather can’t ruin your holiday spirit! Also, there will be a brand new maze and story theme at the World’s Largest Holiday Light Maze — guests can help Santa find eight hidden toys that Eddie the Mischievous Elf has hidden throughout the maze. Finally, a brand new ice skating trail will be available this year where families can glide along a beautiful path surrounded by twinkling lights. It’s the most wonderful time of the year. What better way to enjoy it than by visiting Enchant, North Texas’ closest thing to the North Pole? After one night here, even the biggest Grinch around will be singing carols and saying, “Ho! Ho! Ho!” DETAILS Date: November 23-December 30 Location: Globe Life Park

Not Your Average Christmas Story Celebrate The Holidays By Watching The Hilarious ‘A Christmas Story, The Musical’

A

leg lamp, a pink Easter bunny costume, a frozen tongue and the official Red Ryder Carbine-Action 200-Shot Range Model Air Rifle are part of why watching “A Christmas Story” has been a favorite holiday tradition since 1983. Now, you can see the tale of Ralphie Parker and his family live at the Winspear Opera House this month. Audiences will be taken back to a simpler time — 1940s Indiana — when a boy’s biggest dream is to get a BB gun for Christmas. Laugh along as he dodges his over-protective mother (who warns him, “You’ll shoot your eye out!”), a crazy Santa Claus in a department store, his strict father and school bullies, all while maintaining a hilarious commentary throughout. This live show wouldn’t be possible without the talented people who brought it to life. Joseph Robinette, an award-winning author of more than 50 published plays and musicals, adapted the film for the stage, and songwriting duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (the guys behind Tony Award-winning “Dear Evan Hansen” and Academy Award-winning “La La Land”) transformed the holiday classic into a phenomenal musical! “A Christmas Story, The Musical” first ran on Broadway in 2012, where it received three 2013 Tony nominations including Best Musical and Best Original Score. Now it is touring the country, bringing its holiday cheer everywhere it goes. Whether you are a die-hard fan or have never heard of a triple-dog-dare before, people of all ages will have a blast watching this musical.

THE OWNER OF TOY MAVEN STRESSES THE IMPORTANCE OF TOYS AND SHOPPING LOCALLY

E

ven with an extensive background in early education, Candace Williams found herself in awe of the impact toys had on her daughters when they were little. The oldest is now a sophomore at the University of Texas, and the other is a senior in high school and soon to make empty nesters out of Candace and her husband, Wes. But Candace didn’t leave toys behind as her daughters grew. Rather, she whole-heartedly embraced providing toys for all, including right here in Southlake. Her store, The Toy Maven, is a staple for local families, even as the climate of retail changes. MY FIRST BUSINESS VENTURE… was Kids Cooking Company. It began out of my Dallas home in 2002 when my two daughters, Helen and Elaine, were toddlers. I was combining two of my passions, cooking and teaching, and it was so much fun! In 2005, we opened in Preston-Royal Shopping Center and had about 100 square feet of retail space where we sold books and other cooking-related toys and games. I realized I had so much fun merchandising items and helping friends find unique gifts that when an adjoining space became available in 2007, we took down a back wall and added 3,000 square feet and opened The Toy Maven! BEFORE OPENING THE TOY MAVEN… I studied at the graduate level in the field of elementary education and have taught in Houston and Dallas in a wide variety of educational settings. I enjoyed staying at home with my daughters and I learned more about child development and just how impactful it is to expose children to the right toys, games and books. This can allow children to learn so much more than I ever thought possible! I think that is why I am so passionate about what I do today. I love sharing how parents can support their child’s development with toys. THE STORE’S NAME WAS INSPIRED BY… a bakery. My husband, Wes, and I decided to have a destination wedding in Sante Fe, New Mexico. It was so much easier to plan a fun, four-day event in a city with only two bakeries and two florists to consider! The Chocolate Maven captured my heart, as I love both chocolate and interesting words and they did a beautiful job with our cakes! I had never heard the Yiddish word and, as it means, ‘an expert in an area willing to share their knowledge with others,’ when pondering a name for my store, I immediately did a search and secured the name! WE STARTED A CHRISTMAS EVE TRADITION… when our girls were 6 and 8 years old. We would let our staff leave as early as possible and place the girls on the registers. We would stay until the last person who had frantically pulled on our door left for family dinner with a present for each child. We’ve had some very funny stories over the years, and we feel we have been a part of keeping the peace and allowing families to enjoy their celebrations. ASKING WHAT MY FAVORITE TOY IS… is like asking me which of my children is my favorite! I am just so passionate about the role that toys play in both the developmental and emotional lives of children and also how they can facilitate meaning-

ful family time as we navigate busy schedules. We really strive to match great products to a child’s interests or developmental stage. That said, I have favorites in every category of toys! I am always looking for an opportunity to challenge a customer to a volley with my favorite active toy, Jazzmitton. It’s so much fun to hand a grandmother the racket and say, ‘Let’s play!’ DURING MY 11 YEARS IN THE INDUSTRY… I have seen the biggest ‘craze’ around spinners and squishies! But, Lego and stuffed animal friends continue to dominate. AS WE APPROACH THE HOLIDAY SEASON… STEAM-related toys will be very popular. We have a great variety of items that allow children to explore concepts of science, technology, engineering, the arts and math! WHAT TOYS MEAN TO ME… can be summarized in the quote, ‘People don’t stop playing with toys because they grow old. They grow old because they stop playing!’ I WANT PEOPLE TO FEEL… happy and enjoy the experience of shopping in a locally-owned toy store. We are always striving to improve our customer service and educate our staff members on the always-growing selection of products we offer. We don’t want to just sell toys. There are lots of places that do that. We genuinely want to answer questions and make suggestions that help people find the right gift for the occasion. THE CHALLENGE OF ONLINE COMPETITION…is real for any retail business. The way the major player in the field manipulates prices based on supply and demand is sometimes difficult to explain to customers, but I often hear that our prices are lower than Amazon, especially when items begin to become scarce. SHOPPING LOCALLY IS SO… important as more dollars stay in the community to support local schools and other services. We have seen a fantastic increase in new customers since Toys-R-Us closed, and we hope to lure them to the bright side of shopping in a local toy store! We are excited to be one of fewer than 20 Gold Standard Lego Stores in the U.S. and to offer everything from some of the biggest and most exciting brands to the truly specialty brands that are only in stores like ours. THE BEST PART OF MY JOB IS… the relationships I have made with families and, of course, the hugs I get from my friends both young and old.
