I’ll never forget the feeling as we first drove by the town square on a house hunting trip nearly two decades ago. Newlyweds in a new state, we immediately fell for the concept of the well-heeled shopping and dining district long before fully understanding what it would mean to our community and to our growing family. At the time Southlake was just starting to get recognition as an up and coming suburb and Southlake Town Square was a big part of the reason. Stores have come and gone as the times and tastes change. However, as the future of retail and entertainment reinvents itself for the digital age, updated storefronts like Tesla, Apple, Warby-Parker and now Nike, prove our mixed-use entertainment district continues to set the tone as the place to be for the foreseeable future. Just like new stores blend with traditional favorites, I’m proud to say new community traditions like Somos Southlake and Diwali Fest have also added to our collective cultural landscape. Over the years I’ve staked my claim early for Stars & Stripes, cheered with the crowd at homecoming parades and sang along with my girls and their classmates at Home for the Holidays. When I take one more Olde Tyme Carriage ride with my family this holiday season I’ll be forever grateful for all of the traditions both old and new that our community holds dear.

OLDE TYME CARRIAGE CO.

HAS BEEN MAKING FAMILY MEMORIES FOR GENERATIONS

F

PHOTOS BY BLUDOOR STUDIOS

or over 20 years, Southlake has been creating wonderful holiday memories in the heart of town square. Whether it’s the Christmas tree lit up in all of its splendor, Santa’s colorful village in Rustin Pavilion or carolers singing merry tunes up and down the block, Southlake has many holiday traditions. One of those traditions has been around even before town square was built in 1999. Through their family business Olde Tyme Carriage Co., Ken and Anne Murray have been exclusively providing memorable holiday excursions through their horse-drawn carriage rides. If you asked them what their favorite part of the rides are year after year, they won’t say the horses, the decorations or even the holiday cheer. Instead, their faces will light up over the people they’ve met and the families they’ve proudly escorted over the years. DEC 22 • 17

SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

“The first few years we were in town square, there was a lady that brought her young granddaughter out, and they would ride the carriage, have a great time and come back again the following year,” Ken says. “Several years later, her granddaughter has now brought her own daughter to ride the carriage with her and her grandma. We literally have generations of families that continue to ride with us year after year.” BEFORE THE CART Let’s not put the cart before the horse. The annual traditions of Southlake’s holiday carriage rides actually start 30 miles to the west in the city of Boyd in Wise County. From its early settlement through the mid-1900s, Boyd was known for its agricultural contributions of livestock, cotton and melons. Today with a population of under 1,500, there is still plenty of room for livestock, namely horses to roam. As children, Ken and Anne Murray both grew up in North Texas in the 1960s and 1970s. Ken was raised in Haltom City, while Anne came from Richland Hills. Fittingly, they both grew up around horses, learning to appreciate and care for animals in a way that has served them and the community for decades. Having each come from families who valued service vocations and from parents who took on teaching careers, both Ken and Anne followed in the traditions of community service. Anne spent time as an educator for Springtown ISD, while Ken went into law enforcement as part of the Grapevine Police Department’s mounted patrol. The Murrays maintained their early love of horseback riding, and in 1986, they took their horses on the Texas Sesquicentennial Wagon Train, a 3,000-mile trek lasting six months that celebrated the state’s 150th anniversary. Riding out across the Lone Star State along with over SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

100 other wagons made the Murrays realize they wanted to turn their passion into a business. So in 1987, the couple started their own family operation called Workhorse Ranch. “Anne and I have always had a love and passion for horses,” Ken says. “They’ve been a part of our lives for as long as we can remember.” Sprawled out on over 180 acres across three different properties, Workhorse Ranch is currently home to 15 horses and mules that the Murrays train in a wide range of activities. For over 40 years, they have devoted themselves to training their stock in several disciplines from farm and ranch work to rodeo events and law enforcement. Ken says every day is a little bit different, but each day starts and ends the same — feeding and taking care of the animals. From there, Ken and Anne go where they are needed, whether they are baling hay, working on the tractor or planting and harvesting crops. After a decade of ranch life, the couple took the leap, bought their own carriage and officially launched Olde Tyme Carriage Co. in 1998. In all of their years of running the business, Ken and Anne are proud to say their horses are partners in the effort and not just equipment to be used. The Murrays put their money where their mouths are, going so far as to set up retirement plans for tenured horses. “The most important part of our business is the horses, so I want to make sure I have eyes and hands on every horse every day,” Ken says. HORSE-DRAWN HOLIDAYS Using his connections with the city of Grapevine and the visitors bureau, Ken started building a network and creating opportunities to provide carriage rides in the metroplex. Over the last two decades, Olde Tyme has grown to provide horse-drawn carriage rides for parties, holiday DEC 22 • 19

events, weddings, funerals and most any other event both recreational and educational. But the Murrays' favorite carriage experiences throughout the years involved their two daughters, Caitlyn and Sarah. “On the weekends, some folks would go fishing, hunting or camping,” Ken says. “We would take the wagon and go on trail rides. Our girls literally grew up in the back of a wagon. That was our family time together.” At around the same time they started providing carriage rides, Cooper & Stebbins started laying the foundation for what would become Southlake Town Square on the same property where the Murrays would have their after-church picnics. After Ken introduced himself to the developers, he set it up to where Olde Tyme Carriage Co. would be the exclusive providers of holiday carriage rides in town square. And true to their family roots, their daughters also helped make the family business a generational success. “As we were starting the first few years in Southlake, my daughters helped with the carriage business however they could,” Ken says. “When Caitlyn was older, she started driving horses for us, while Sarah would be the hostess and coordinate the patrons that wanted to ride. They grew up being part of the business.” Olde Tyme Carriage Co. has helped riders step back in time through their horse-drawn holiday carriage rides ever since, taking in the exuberant sights of town square while they hear the clicketyclack of hooves and festive music all around them. “It’s the total package,” Ken says. “It’s the ambiance, the atmosphere, the Christmas tree in the center, Santa and the elves in the gazebos and all the vendors in town square embracing the whole Christmas aspect. The carriage rides are just one small part of that perfect environment.” Starting from the Rustin Pavilion near Southlake’s towering Christmas tree, the standard carriage ride for four takes you around the square proper and lasts roughly five to seven minutes. Families and groups of up to eight looking to create long-lasting memories can extend their rides up to 15 minutes. Families who do it best will bring their own blankets and hot beverages so as to fully enjoy the festive loop. The Murrays say carriages are generally available after sunset Friday through Sunday. Although reservations are not required, they are encouraged during peak times. Always committed to providing the best experience possible, Olde Tyme Carriage Co. will always come early and stay late to handle popular demand. Nothing makes them prouder than seeing families return with their kids to experience their carriage rides year after year — and eventually, with grandkids as well. “We used to have a family with twin boys come out and ride with us,” Ken says. “Now, that family of four has grown to 12, with those boys growing up to have their own kids. It’s those kinds of relationships you develop over the years that makes it all worth it.” SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

SOUTHLAKE FIRE DEPARTMENT WELCOMES NEW FIREFIGHTERS Honoring 25 new firefighters, the Southlake Fire Department recently held the largest badge-pinning ceremony in its history. The ceremony celebrated two new battalion chiefs, three lieutenants, four engineers and 16 new firefighters. “It’s a recognition of the fact that they completed a rigorous process,” chief Michael Starr says. “They went through the hiring process and completed the orientation. Now they’re issued their badge that they’ll keep for their career and will only be changing when they promote.” LADY DRAGON VOLLEYBALL NAMED AREA CHAMPS The Lady Dragons made a strong showing at the volleyball area contest last month. Finishing fourth in district with an 8-6 record, the Lady Dragons went into the playoffs hot off the heels of two big victories. During the bi-district contest on Nov. 1, the Lady Dragons defeated Weatherford 3-2 at the Thomas Coliseum. Then on Nov. 4, they defeated Odessa Permian 3-0 and became area champs. The Lady Dragons took on Keller next on Nov. 8 before falling to them 2-3 during the Region 1 quarterfinals.

TEACHER TELETHON MAKES CALLS FOR CARROLL EDUCATORS The Carroll Education Foundation was busy on the lines last month. For the past three years, CEF has been making phone calls through the Teacher Telethon, collecting donations and raising money for teachers’ salaries at Carroll ISD. This year’s telethon raised the bar, not only aiming to raise $150,000 to fund three teachers for the upcoming school year but also raising $30,000 in matching dollars ahead of the event. “The Teacher Telethon is one of our favorite CEF events of the year,” Keller Williams broker associate Ashley Pantuso Schaible says. “It’s an exciting day that is fun for our agents who volunteer [for] the opportunity to share the mission and vision of CEF.”

ROCKBOX FITNESS INSTRUCTOR NAMED TRAINER OF THE YEAR A year after opening its doors, Rockbox Fitness has been making a name for itself not just locally, but also nationally. Last month, over 500 trainers from 45 franchises traveled to Charlotte, North Carolina to attend the annual fitness summit for the company at large. Standing apart from the pack was Southlake trainer Gabe Lasmarias, who was named Rockbox Fitness’ Trainer of the Year. “Gabe stood out from the pack because of the endless energy he brings to the gym, his commitment to enhancing the health of his members and the work he does in the community to build a fitness family,” owner Michael Ryan says.

CARROLL BOYS CROSS-COUNTRY EARNS A FOUR-PEAT AT STATE The Southlake Carroll boys cross-country team has done it again. Last month, the Dragons traveled to Round Rock to compete in the state championship in Old Settlers Park. Defeating runner-up Austin Vandegrift by 19 points, the boys not only earned their fourth straight state championship but also finished in the top two at the meet for the 13th consecutive year. The girls also made a strong showing at state, finishing second overall behind Flower Mound. “It takes yearround dedication to succeed at our sport,” head coach Justin Leonard says. “Words cannot describe how proud I am of our young men and women.” ROCKENBAUGH ELEMENTARY CELEBRATES 25 YEARS One of Carroll’s most prestigious elementary schools celebrated its anniversary last month. The lobby and public areas received cosmetic upgrades such as new furniture, carpeting and tables, while a new self-checkout kiosk was added to the grab-and-go coffee spot. The meeting and event spaces were refreshed with new carpet and wall coverings, and the fitness center was expanded by 300 square feet to include new workout space and two new Peloton bikes. Additionally, new decor and furnishings were incorporated into the guest rooms and bathrooms for an updated design.

f you have an Alexa at home, you know how convenient it is with setting alarms, getting the temperature or just playing music. The only way it might be improved is if it could follow you around. It looks like Amazon thought of that too with its newest high-tech appliance, the Amazon Astro. Described as an “Alexa on wheels,” Astro is a mobile home assistant that can perform a variety of different tasks. Using voice activation, Astro will happily take on any request just by saying its name and giving a command. Whether you want to stream shows and music or video chat with family and friends, you can access everything from Astro’s 10-inch touchscreen.

But this easy-to-use assistant is much more than a streaming device. Thanks to its built-in navigation sensors, Astro can maneuver around the house and follow you anywhere. Its periscope camera allows you to tune into any live feed from the kitchen counter to your front door. It’s even more fun when the kids have friends over, with configured settings allowing Astro to sing, play — even snap a selfie. While Astro is currently available by invite only, this high-tech wonder will be rolling out for its wide release very soon. Reserve yours today and welcome your family’s newest mechanical member home.

Making Christmas Bright One LED Santa At A Time

S

anta Claus isn’t the only one delivering Christmas cheer this holiday season. A few years ago, Grapevine resident Louie Murillo began buying decorative Santas in bulk for another one of his festive family Christmas card photos. One Santa led to another, and that’s when he got the bright idea to adorn his home all in the name of giving back. With the support of neighbors and friends, his holiday displays have raised over $58,000 for GRACE Grapevine’s Christmas Cottage. This month, Louie is setting his fundraising sights even higher for his holiday home. EVERY YEAR, MY FAMILY AND I… would come up with a crazy idea for a Christmas card and go all out with the costumes and theme. Our first was a 1950s vintage Christmas card with an ‘I Love Lucy’ look. One year we reenacted ‘A Christmas Story.’ Another year, we did the elf on a shelf. It’s always just been a creative outlet — a fun way to do a Christmas card that wasn’t basic. RIGHT AFTER CHRISTMAS IN 2019… I found some plastic Santas and bought 20 of them, thinking that I might somehow incorporate them into the Christmas card next year. When I started working from home the following year, I started buying more and more Santas. It was just that addiction of one more. IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE… our attic was filled with Santas. And then we filled our second attic with Santas. Then we filled our game room with Santas. We had to get a storage unit, then after we maxed that out, we had to get a second one. There’s got to be over 1,000 Santas. I don’t really have a count because I just kept buying them. I CAME UP WITH THE IDEA TO… do this big Santa display, but I knew it had to be more than a display — it had to be an opportunity to help the community. There were a lot of people going through hardships during that time, a lot of people that weren’t working or were under-resourced. We decided to partner with GRACE Grapevine and make it an opportunity to give to the Christmas Cottage. OUR ORIGINAL GOAL STARTED AT… $20,000. When I told GRACE what we wanted to raise, they were not sure if it was possible. We ended up raising $58,518 instead. THERE WAS A LOT OF… prep work that was needed ahead of time. I needed to convert every single Santa

36 • DEC 22

to LED to make sure they were energy-efficient. I also did a lot of clear coating, to make sure each one of them kept from fading. As for [displaying them], a lot of volunteers and family members jumped in and were ready to help. We got everything up and running in about a day and a half. ONCE WE OPENED… it up to the community, it went on full explosion. We got bigger and bigger, to the point where traffic started packing our street. My wife even had trouble trying to pull in [the driveway]. It was just the right thing for the community at the right time. AFTERWARDS, I VISITED… the Christmas Cottage and saw people picking out presents for their kids. It was a cool experience to see the people who wouldn’t have been able to have a big Christmas and give them a little bit more of a blessing. THIS YEAR’S SANTA HOUSE WILL… be ready for the public on Thanksgiving night and run through Christmas. We’ll have three ways to donate — giving cash on-site in a mailbox, a Venmo going directly to GRACE and a GoFundMe people can access online. Our goal this year is $70,000 — $35,000 on-site, and $35,000 in matching sponsors. THE BEST PART ABOUT THE SANTA HOUSE IS… being out here at night and connecting with the kids. You can see the excitement it brings them in the glow of their eyes. It makes it even more special knowing that we’re impacting children in this community who are under-resourced this holiday season. It’s all about the kids either way, both the ones that experience it in person and the ones who are going to be blessed by it for Christmas.

SOUTHLAKE TOWN SQUARE CONTINUES TO IMPRESS WITH REFRESHED RETAIL

SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

W

hen it comes to retail, the new normal looks bright in Southlake thanks to a continually relevant mix of shopping, dining and entertainment. As we hit the peak shopping month of the year, it’s easy to see that this has been an impressive year for Southlake’s original shopping district. The future of retail always seems to find Southlake. When the Apple store opened in town square in 2006, it became the focal point of the next generation of high-end retail. A decade later, next-gen companies like Tesla, Warby Parker and Peloton all opened physical locations for what were primarily digital-first companies. The new hybrid locations were places to showcase products and assist customers with online purchases. How else could a car dealership thrive in a space originally designed for clothing retail?

REFRESHED RETAIL

Today, successful retailers and Southlake-area consumers alike understand the shopping experience is no longer just about convenience. “Over time, the internet became all the convenience the customer needs,” Cooper and Company president Frank Bliss says. “What the customer now demands is the experience. As a result, we’re seeing a massive shift from convenience-focused stores towards more strategically-focused experiential stores.” As retailers continue to reimagine their overall experience and offerings, they prove the “clicksand-mortar” model is more than just a catchphrase — it is the way of retail in 2022. In fact, according to the National Retail Federation, nine of the Top 10 e-commerce websites are run by retailers that also operate physical stores. According to Bliss, the integration of online and physical stores gives consumers the flexibility they are looking for. To this day, when ultra-successful retailers are looking for the right place to serve their customers, they often find a home in the heart of a small city. The original vision behind the development of Southlake Town Square is alive and well. “While our core customer is willing to drive from as far as two hours away, we routinely poll Southlake regarding what they’d like to see in town square. The vision remains to be a smalltown downtown that is a gathering place for the community,” says Jason Kasal, vice president and senior leasing director of Kite Realty Group. “Over the last 12 months, Southlake Town Square has taken the most significant leap forward in attracting more premier retail brands than the project has experienced in its 20-plus-year history.” Consumer sentiment may have hit a record low in June, however, the mood in Southlake continues to pace the national market, which continues to see new store openings. Many of the most relevant retailers have prepared themselves for the new normal where physical proximity is crucial not just for local fulfillment, but also in building awareness and demand from sought-after consumers. Southlake nightlife has also gotten an upgrade, from several new restaurants spearheaded by Moxies and the newly-renovated Copeland’s inside the Hilton. Moviegoers are also enjoying an updated experience from the new EVO Entertainment, which opened in March. Whether they’re names you’ve known for years or ones your kids just have to have, Southlake Town Square continues to evolve for the next generation of Southlake shoppers. Here’s a rundown of the best and brightest retail shops now open for the holidays in the heart of our city. 40 • DEC 22

NIKE

Nike swooshed into its Grand Avenue location between Bath and Body Works and Victoria’s Secret just in time for the holiday season. With brand representatives known the world over like Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Tiger Woods, Rafael Nadal and Cristiano Ronaldo, Nike has built their brand and reputation on delivering innovative products, experiences and services to inspire world-class athletes and casual enthusiasts alike. The Southlake location with its clean minimalist aesthetic fits right into the company’s newer smaller footprints as it offers the latest merchandise as a digitally-enabled brick-and-mortar brand experience for area shoppers.

THE VAULT DTX

Located between the Boardroom Salon and Mi Cocina, The Vault DTX is a vintage shoe store that buys, sells and trades rare and exclusive shoes. The store itself feels like stepping through a time machine, with retro T-shirts, sports posters and a VHS player taking you back to the ’90s. But don’t be mistaken — the stars of The Vault DTX are the shoes. With notable brands such as Air Jordan, New Balance and Yeezy, The Vault DTX’s walls are lined with dozens of polished pairs of shoes, with some as high as $4,000 in value.

LULULEMON

The fashion movement of athleisure has officially taken over the world, or at least the former space held by the one-time world’s most famous clothier in Brooks Brothers. Those looking for their signature yogawear will find they have twice the space in which to shop. Lululemon will need every bit of its new 7,000-square-foot flagship location to house an expanded line of men’s and women’s gear that include shoes, hiking and cool weather apparel and accessories.

BRANDY MELVILLE

Founded in Italy in the early 1980s, Brandy Melville opened their first U.S. store in Los Angeles in 2009 and more recently found their way to Southlake mid-year. Economically and environmentally efficient thanks to its “one size” policy, Brandy Melville is widely popular with young women for their beachy crop tops, high-waisted bottoms and oversized sweaters.

AERIE

Aerie, which is a shorter and more stylized version of American Eagle lingerie, is another lifestyle retailer popular with young women that recently made its way to Southlake. Aerie, which opened in the former Gap location near Starbucks, sets itself apart from its parent brand thanks to a unique take on athleisure including this season’s velour leisure set, high-waisted leggings, tops and undergarments at the crossroads of comfort and style.

YETI

Step one: keep Austin weird. Step two: open flagship location. Step three: open a store in Southlake. Like Tylers, Torchy’s and others, Yeti is the latest Austin-based company to bring its wares to Southlake. The company best known as the gold standard for camping coolers and rugged tumblers has elbowed out room between Travis Mathew and Peloton. Just the second DFW location for the premium outdoor brand expects to lure in shoppers with its ability to customize your favorite YETI products. 42 • DEC 22

1764 HIDDEN SPRINGS COURT I WESTLAKE

A

s larger-scale multi-home developments are slowing down, custom-built modern takes on Hill Country homes are popping up all over the Southlake area. But when you can find one that’s also on a 1-acre-plus waterfront lot, you may have hit the jackpot — specifically a $4.95-million jackpot. This rare lot adjacent to a natural pond at 1764 Hidden Springs Court in Westlake is home to a five-bedroom stunner that is swimming in highend details.

BACKYARD VIEWS No disrespect to the architects of this property, but the beauty to many will lie in the backyard — a backyard devoid of fenced-off neighborly views. Not only does this property house a custom-built Claffey pool and spa, but the entire patio area overlooks a pond and all of its natural, fish-spawning, bird-swooping splendor. There’s no better way to find some inner peace and tranquility than to be surrounded by water. BUILT-IN BONUSES A well-designed living space makes use of every nook, and this property takes full advantage of multiple built-in fixtures. On either side of the built-in gas fireplace in the living room are symmetrical back-lit floating shelves that provide a little bit of storage and a lot of personality once they're adorned with your preferred family photos and heirlooms. What’s more, there is nary a room in the house from the wet bar to the home office that isn’t completed by a floating surface of eye-popping quartz. Even the staircase is made of floating glass. SPACIOUS SETTINGS Measuring in at nearly 7,400 square feet, this home is roughly 50% larger than most oversized homes on similarly arranged cul-de-sacs. Yet with just five bedrooms, it's easy to see that the next owners will have more than enough room to spread out — including a kitchen that boasts two separate prep areas. The first floor also comes with a game and media room. Photos by John Walsh | Premier Property Media

Dan was absolutely stellar during the entirety of the process. Throughout every aspect of the process, he took charge and helped with everything that I had questions about. Dan took the time to explain every part of the process and answered every question that I had, and offered me plenty of options to choose from. When we finally landed this house, he took the time to explain every next potential step in the process and what I would need for each step. He was the best help I could have asked for as a first-time home buyer and I will recommend him every chance I get. Excellent Care And Treatment

As a patient, you can feel vulnerable and must rely on the nurses and support staff for consistent treatment of your medical issues and emotions as they occur. The nurses who treated me offered an excellent delivery. I felt a part of the decisionmaking process. Answers to any questions I had were given in terms I could comprehend. My doctor visits were consistent, and the nurses came promptly and regularly to monitor all aspects of my medical needs. Kindness and professional treatment also came through my door with the early morning lab technicians, food delivery staff, volunteers and cleaning staff who asked how I

AESTHETIC SPECIALISTS Warm Welcome

I am so NEW to the world of injections. I went in just to have a consultation just to see what all it was about. This facility is State of the Art!!! Beautiful place! But beyond that, comes the staff. I can honestly say that I have NEVER been to an appointment that made me feel more welcome and more educated. I have been skeptical on these kinds of procedures so I just was curious to know about me and what they would recommend. Each "department" has their own person. Comer - was super friendly and helped get all my medical background to see if I was a candidate in general. EMILY - WOW! What can I say....SUPER educated. SUPER friendly. All around SUPER intelligent. She spent almost an hour with me for a consultation going thru every step of all possibilities. UNBELIEVABLE! Then she called in the main doctor - Doctor Jason Potter. He gave his own suggestions - yet he pulled up a chair and answered all my questions. Went in detail about procedures they offered. HE IS SO BUSY YET TOOK THAT MUCH TIME WITH ME!!!! Again...unbelievable. There was no rush. They answered everything and more. I just can't say enough about my experience. AMAZING!!!! — Michaela K.

TEXAS GUN EXPERIENCE A Top-Tier Range Experience

Incredibly helpful and friendly staff. For our annual guy’s day out, I wanted to do something different. Texas Gun Experience is the only facility I know of, in the DFW area, that has full auto rentals with or without suppressors. They could not have been more helpful or accommodating. The range safety officers were a perfect combination of instructional and funny while continuing to take safety seriously. There are many great ranges in DFW, but if you’re looking for a top-tier experience, this is the place. – Will G.

A Blessing In Faith

Grapevine Faith is much more than a landing place for my career. It is a home and extended family to my husband, our three children and me. It is rewarding to be able to share first-hand experiences with families who are considering Faith for their children’s education as the director of admissions. I have been blessed to walk where they are walking and believe seeing how Grapevine Faith prepared my children for college and beyond gives me the confidence in sharing how we truly work with each student to prepare them for success. I have seen our mission to develop and graduate authentic Christian leaders lived out not only in my children but in alumni from their classes and many others. I’m fortunate to have a behind-the-scenes view of the time teachers dedicate to pouring into their students beyond the classroom and know what a tremendous impact those relationships had on my family, just as they do for countless others. — Marion G.

Pizzana Brings A New Spin On Neo Neapolitan Pies

t’s all about the dough at Pizzana. Founded in Brentwood, California in 2017, Pizzana is the Neo Neapolitan dream of Italian chef Daniele Uditi, who has previously been featured on Netflix’s “The Chef Show,” “Beat Bobby Flay” and “Best In Dough.” Now the award-winning pizzaiolo is bringing his bold take on the traditional pie to his first Texas restaurant in downtown Dallas. Raised by a family of bakers and bread makers, chef Uditi’s childhood revolved around cleaning pizza ovens and baking loaves at his family’s bakery in Naples. After immigrating to Los Angeles in 2010, his culinary expertise shined through while catering for private gatherings, including those of Golden Globe-nominated actor Chris O’Donnell.

It was in Los Angeles where he met Sprinkles Cupcakes founder Candace Nelson, who after trying one of his appetizing slices, wanted to help make his pizza dream a reality. “I took one bite of that delicious pizza and thought ‘This is something special,’” Candace recalls. “I saw it all coming together, and we decided to partner up and open a restaurant.” Using organic stone ground flour, chef Uditi ferments his signature “slow dough” for 48 hours ahead of baking. The result is a light, crispy crust that you’d come to expect from a traditional Neapolitan pizza, but with sturdy support in the middle of the slice. “Traditionally, Neapolitan pizza is eaten

with a fork and a knife, but we Americans typically love to pick up our slice and eat with our hands,” Candace says. “The ‘slow dough’ gives the incredible character, char and chew of a Neapolitan pizza with the firmness to hold up a slice. It’s the best of Italy meeting American tastes.” It’s a taste that’s earned Pizzana multiple honors, not only being named one of Jonathan Gold’s Top 101 Restaurants in Los Angeles but also being a Michelin Bib Gourmand award recipient. Trading out the red-checkered flair of a standard pizzeria for hues of white and aqua blue, the restaurant is reminiscent of the Mediterranean sea and a tribute to the kitchens that chef Uditi was raised in. The ingredients are as true to chef Uditi’s roots as the restaurant is, with the fior di latte mozzarella shipped fresh from Italy and the San Marzano tomatoes grown from his own garden in Naples. With over 15 different pizza selections, diners will have no trouble picking an appropriate pie to slice into. You can’t go wrong with the classic pepperoni or Margherita, but more adventurous diners can also try the Diavola pizza, which is topped with spicy salami, charred shallots, nduja walnut romesco and honey. The Pignatiello is made with braised short rib and Parmigiano crema sauce, while the vodka pizza is topped with chef Uditi’s homemade vodka sauce, salsa verde, calabrian chile and oregano. The Dallas restaurant will also be introducing diners to a barbecue brisket pizza that’s exclusive to its location. And for those looking to take their slices to go, customers can order their pizzas the “heat and slice” way, where they take a partially cooked pizza, add their provided toppings, heat it in the oven and serve it fresh at home. While pizza is the star of the show, it isn’t all that Pizzana has to offer. It also has an assortment of salads and pastas for all kinds of Italian connoisseurs, whether you are served the polpette al forno with meatballs, the wood-fired broccolini or crispy panko cauliflower pasta. Of course, you can’t end a meal without dessert, and this is where Candace’s baking expertise comes in. Whether it's the chocolate olive oil cake with vanilla ice cream, the panna cotta topped with salted caramel pretzels or the apple crisp made with a bourbon glaze, Candace marries the two worlds of Italian and American cuisine just like the rest of the restaurant does. “I love baking and elevating these everyday experiences for people through food,” Candace says. “Our specialties may be different, but [chef Uditi] and I are both bakers working with different types of dough. We truly do have something for everyone at Pizzana.”

Me And You Down By The WineYard

Texas Meets Mediterranean-style Barbecue At Hotel Vin’s Latest Managed by Coury Hospitality, Grapevine’s Hotel Vin has quickly become the go-to spot for unique culinary experiences, top-shelf drinks and nights that last beyond 10 p.m. The stunning 120-room boutique hotel is part of the Autograph Collection, so you know it provides the perfect backdrop for a night out with family and friends. And if that isn’t enough, the hotel’s latest concept WineYard Grille + Bar was recently unveiled to the public. The team that brought you Bacchus Kitchen + Bar and the Magnum Speakeasy have teamed with executive chef Juan Pablo Silva to put a new twist on the outdoor patio overlooking Grapevine’s Vintage Railroad. The plush, turfed area set aglow with strings of warm Edison bulbs and seasonal outdoor heaters is an enticing spot to enjoy a cocktail and live music on cooler nights. The addition of WineYard Grille + Bar elevates the al fresco experience on the expansive north lawn. Texas meets Mediterranean-style barbecue in the form of smoked meats and rich, flavorful sides in this casual, yet refined space that is also pet friendly. The fusion fun starts with the old faithful Texas trio of pork ribs, beef brisket and whole chickens fresh off the smoker. Diners can then choose from a variety of sauces with a European influence. The Roquefort sauce brings in elements of a French-style blue cheese while the spicier Brava sauce hails from Spain. Of course, purists will also be able to compare Silva’s barbecue sauce and see how it differs from their personal favorites. Great barbecue needs elevated sides, and Silva brought his A-game with down-home yet inventive takes like the Black Truffle Manchego Fries and Smoked Gouda Mac and Cheese amongst others. This hotel works well under pressure, even if it is selfinduced with a name like “Vin” in a town called Grapevine. WineYard and the entire property delights in offering an extensive list of national and international wines. Get a worldly vibe from Tuscan Sangiovese and Bordeaux varietals served by the glass, or stay closer to home with a California Cabernet. Others can choose to get in the spirit with a Caramel Apple Mule made with Tito’s Handmade Vodka, caramel syrup, apple cider and ginger beer. The appropriatelynamed Midnight Train blends rye, amaro, montenegro, sweet vermouth and chocolate orange bitters in a cocktail that is bound to warm you up in the event the lively atmosphere and patio heaters do not.

A New Kind Of Sundance Film Festival

Rooftop Cinema Club Debuts In Fort Worth’s Sundance Square In 1981, Robert Redford founded the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah to champion voices in American cinema. Four decades later, blockbuster movies have become center stage at Sundance Square as Rooftop Cinema Club opens its eighth location in Downtown Fort Worth. Those who believe movies are best screened with a large audience will want to make their way to the top of the Renaissance Worthington Hotel. From this historic vantage point, views of The Kimbell Art Museum, Texas Christian University, The Stockyards and the Fort Worth skyline come together with classic films, cult favorites and new blockbuster releases. With locations already in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, Rooftop Cinema Club knows how to get the party started. Their opening week of films debuted the first week of November with wide-ranging hits such as “Grease,” “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Nope,” “The Princess Bride” and “The Notebook.” Forget about watching rotating commercials and less interesting trivia. Instead, arrive early to enjoy lawn games, Instagrammable sunset views or simply sip on a drink from the lounge area. When the sun sets, the fun continues under the stars, with moviegoers enjoying adjustable lounging deckchairs. Double loungers are also available for those enjoying a night with someone special. All seats come with cushions and side tables. The comfort continues with a pair of personal headphones that help drown out any unwanted noise and keep you focused on the dialogue of your favorite actors. What’s an elevated cinematic experience without some good food? To complement each showing, Rooftop Cinema Club offers fresh popcorn, soft drinks and cinema candy favorites. They have also combined efforts with The Worthington Renaissance and Toro Toro by Richard Sandoval to create a next-level concessionstyle menu. Enjoy signature food and beverage offerings like the Soft Salted Pretzel, or the Hot Diggity Dog. For the full Fort Worth experience, try chef Sandoval’s Pulled Pork Tacos served hot on a corn tortilla with pickled onions, morita bacon, fresh cilantro and avocado cream. The Nacho Libre features crispy chicken, Toro Toro’s famous guacamole, pico de Gallo, sour cream and Cotija cheese. Wine and beer options are plentiful for the 21 and over crowd. Enjoy Shiner Bock and other local beers on tap in addition to offerings from Fort Worth’s favorite Rahr Brewery. Others will enjoy drink options on tap that include a signature margarita and an Old Fashioned featuring Fort Worth’s own TX blended whiskey. From cinematic views and scores of extra moviegoing magic, the Rooftop Cinema Club takes dinner and a movie to a whole new level.

Stop Dreaming Of A White Christmas And Head To British Columbia

W

idely known as the best ski destination in North America, Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains lie just two hours north of Vancouver in the mountain range of British Columbia. The rugged terrain is in the direct path of Pacific storm fronts that provide more than 440 inches of snowfall every year. One of the best-kept secrets is that on average, 98 inches of snow arrives in November alone, making Whistler a perfect early-season destination for ski-loving families and those dreaming of a white Christmas.

The Ultimate Ski Destination

At elevations of 5,020 and 5,280 feet respectively, Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains enjoy one of the longest skiing and snowboarding seasons in the world at nearly 200 days each year. Boasting breathtaking beauty and plenty of natural powder, there are more than 200 trails and 8,100 acres of skiable terrain for all skill levels at the two mountains. With newly-upgraded lifts, the uphill capacities have been increased by as much as 30% to meet popular demand. Like the new lifts, The Fairmont has ambassadors who are available to help you make the most of a day on the trails. Whether they’re finding less congested runs through the many available beginner to intermediate trails or unearthing that breathtaking double black diamond, they aim to please. Snowboarders will also enjoy the added challenges from five dedicated parks and a superpipe.

Toboggans And Tubes

Maybe you love winter but can’t ski very well. Not to worry — Whistler is still the place for you. Of course, you can and should make a snowman and have a snowball fight. But there’s also plenty to do before you grab that hot cup of cocoa. Try any number of cold weather adventures from skating to tubing, or even go on a toboggan run. Each winter, a special ice skating rink at the Whistler Olympic Plaza allows you to skate by mountain views and Olympic rings all under thousands of festive holiday lights. Or borrow a toboggan from the resort’s fitness center and enjoy a facefirst jaunt at top speeds. The Whistler Blackcomb Buble Tube Park provides all the thrills of whooshing down the mountain without the equipment or training. There’s even a conveyor lift to whisk you back up for another run.

Dinner And Drinks

If the 17 area mountain-top restaurants aren’t enough, there are plenty of great places to dine on the property. Executive and “passionate pollinator” chef Isabel Chung has been curating the dining experience at the resort since 2015. The Wildflower has a wide selection of locally-inspired dishes from arctic char and king salmon to a AAA 10-ounce striploin served with a peppercorn jus. Adventurous eaters will enjoy her Beeswax-aged Fraser Valley Duck Breast with hazelnut-whipped potatoes. Join friends and family at the Mallard Lounge and Terrace, one of Whistler’s most iconic destinations for celebratory cocktails and live music at the base of the Blackcomb Mountain. The audubon theme carries on with the signature Duck-Duck Goose, made with a duck fat-washed rye, amaro, lemon, honey and an egg white. Or get in the mood with a White Out Cosmo made with Absolut Pear and Elderflower Vodka and white cranberry juice. The upscale bar’s food menu delights as well with elevated burgers, sandwiches and more to keep you fueled for another round. Fairmont.com/Whistler/
