LETTER FROM
finding your fl ow
SOUTHL AKE
Have you ever just lost complete sense of time while working on a pet project? Maybe you missed lunch while tending to your garden or missed an appointment while totally engrossed in the latest draft of your blog. Your kids know it as being “in the zone.” Which was probably during their latest Call of Duty marathon. And you know that as chores not getting done. Be it hobbies, chores or work, when an endeavor is found in which there is so much passion that you lose track of time — it is affectionately called “finding your flow.” It’s the state of being energized, hyper-focused and completely encapsulated in the task at hand. I can find my flow in anything from a long run on a cool, sunny morning to sifting through family photos or dare I say — an Excel spreadsheet. You can’t get there on purpose, but you can get there with purpose. And when you do, you won’t even realize the transition until it’s over. The feeling of losing yourself in your own passions is one of the greatest feelings around. This month, we’re delighted to share with you the passions of two distinctly unique artists who call Southlake home. I’m sure author Jen Geigle Johnson found her flow many times while filling the pages of her historically themed romance novels. Thanks to those moments, today the mother of six can add award-winning author to her list of credentials. Renowned for large-scale floral paintings perfected in her youth, Olivia Bennett’s “emotional escape” brought good health and national acclaim. Today, her art still remains a lifelong passion — one she continues to use in helping others. Here’s to finding your flow in this month’s issue.

LOCAL WHOLESOME HISTORICAL ROMANCE AUTHOR SHARES HER PASSION
A WAY WITH W
WORDS
E
veryone thinks they have a book in them, but only some successfully transition from readers to authors and even less get positive feedback on their first pitch. But Jen Geigle Johnson is not your average writer. Her first book, The Nobleman’s Daughter, made its debut back in November, the second comes out in May and three more projects are in the works, so it’s safe to say a successful career has begun. This is all on top of taking the time to care for her six children, orchestrating a local writing group and organizing a local literary conference happening this month. Through it all, Jen pushes herself to keep creating books and characters she wants to see on the shelf.
FINDING HER GENRE After attending Brigham Young University where she received her English degree, Jen dabbled in different roles within the industry. Whether it was blogging or copyediting, they always stayed close to her passion: writing. Regardless of her title, the busy mom has always been an avid book lover. After reading classics like Pride and Prejudice over and over again and exploring England’s past while living there as a teenager, Jen discovered a passion for history and the genres that told its stories. But it wasn’t until her youngest child went off to kindergarten that Jen found time to really dive deeper into the historical romance genre in earnest. Once she started, she couldn’t get enough. Jen picked up one book right after the other until she had read hundreds of these narratives. “I went on a historical romance binge once I started reading more in the genre,” Jen says. “Once I finished one, I downloaded the next. Once people start reading these books, they read them all. You get addicted to them real fast.” FEB 18 • 17
DETERMINING HER MARKET As Jen kept reading, the different beats in the novels’ plots created a clear pattern. She knew how some of the greats, like classic names such as Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer-or more modern novelists like Julianne Donaldson and Jennifer Moore-built up tension that made for engaging stories readers would follow until the end. Also, epic benchmarks like A Tale of Two Cities and The Far Pavilions acted as tomes of goodness in the literary world that made their mark without mentioning salacious information. “I prefer a plot line that’s not directed by the steamy side of romance,” Jen says. “It needs to stand alone on the story, on the relationship and on the emotional pull of the characters.” So, with a breadth of knowledge for the genre’s work and an understanding of the market’s audience, Jen started to write. It took 18 months to write and edit her first book, but by the end of it, she had a passion project she wanted to share with the world. It’s also something she wanted to share with her children, so she fashioned familyfriendly content that would be appropriate for a variety of ages. “My 11-year-old daughter read [The Nobleman’s Daughter] three times. She quotes it, which is cute,” Jen says. “I finally had to tell her it was okay if she wanted to read something else.” When Jen finished the book, she brought it to the LDStorymakers Conference. While there, two mid-sized presses heard pitches about the story and both were interested in reading more. She ended up partnering with Covenant Communications, Inc. to bring her work to fruition. The publication’s other work excited Jen and she knew she could trust what other work her book would sit alongside on the shelves. 18 • FEB 18
”
Jen found many romance novels had their go-to tropes and leaned on the fervor within relationships, so she started reading wholesome historical romance novels as a way to find greater complexity in storylines. This subgenre, also referred to as clean romance, still has that passion found in the broader genre but did not share any explicit details. And, if those interactions aren’t intense enough, they are written with historic backdrops including times of revolution and uprising throughout the world. “I always like romance, but I like for those stories to have a little more to that,” Jen says. “There’s so much to take from history because the best stories are real.”

The Nobleman’s Daughter falls into the Regency romance subgenre with its 19th century London setting and high society main characters. However, it challenges the idea of typecast protagonists by following the characters’ efforts to fight for the commoners in their community. The power struggle between heroine, Lady Amanda, and her suitor, Lord Nathaniel, carries into the time’s overall theme of overcoming obstacles through the revolution. “I thought I’d just write a book I’d want to read,” Jen says. “My goal is to craft beautiful sentences and great literature through my writing.”
CREATING HER CHARACTERS While Jen pulls her sceneries from history, she finds inspiration from her
“She will see a problem and work to solve it in her own one-on-one way,” Jen says. “Amanda works to help those who can’t help themselves.” Amanda isn’t the only daughter you’ll meet through Jen’s work. She finds the individual qualities that make her children distinct and forms her characters with their essence. In Scarlet, her second book coming out this May, the story centers on a young woman named during the French Revolution. The heroine reminds Jen of her 18-year-old daughter Sarah who has a passion for acting. So, this main character tackles arising problems differently than Amanda would and has a flare for the dramatics that come with the period. Because of this time’s violent history, Scarlet also
omance, but I like for those stories to ore to that...There’s so much to take from e the best stories are real. — Jen Geigle Johnson grounded characters in her loved ones, like her most dear relationship with Dustin Johnson, her husband. Jen met Dustin during their undergraduate college years at BYU. They both attended a social event together and met playing the game Mafia. He then took her for a ride up in the mountains in his Jeep, with the top and doors off, letting the warm wind rush behind them and the stars shine above them. As she says, the rest was history. “There’s a lot of my husband in all of my guys,” Jen says. “That’s where I pull my romantic experience from, a really good man.” Readers will also meet her first born, Amanda, in her first book. The 20-yearold was instrumental in the book’s creation, working closely with her mother throughout the editing process. While fictional Lady Amanda faces different complications in her time, Jen infuses her daughter’s problem solving tactics into Lady Amanda’s spirit. SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM
includes more stark details than her first project. Readers should prepare to face some of the darkest times in this country’s past. “I wanted it to be real but nothing too bad. I’d still let my child read it,” Jen says.
PROVIDING FOR HER COMMUNITY When she’s not reading or churning out her next book, Jen runs the local writing group, Southlake Writers. They get together to improve their craft, edit each other’s work, connect with other writers and share tips of the trade. They are always looking to expand their network of passionate people eager to learn more from other local writers. In her – if you can call it that – spare time, Jen also acts as the chair and instruction coordinator of the first ever Lonestar.Ink Writing Conference. From February 8 to 10, writers of all genres will make their way to the Dallas CenFEB 18 • 19

tral Library to learn about the craft and business aspects of writing from some of the industry’s best minds. “I was looking for excellent craft classes, and I just hadn’t found it here,” Jen says. “I wanted to hear these people talk myself, so I got to work and started planning.” Attendees should expect the two-day conference to include courses in topics ranging from strengthening character development to marketing your completed project. They can choose between the event’s many intensive workshops and master classes depending on what they need help with to plan out their ideal weekend with the pros. The classes’ instructors include the conference’s special guests like award-winning, best-selling author David Farland and L. Perkins agent Ben Grange. “A beginning writer could show up and walk out knowing the entire process behind writing a book,” Jen says. The conference will also hold a first five pages contest where writers can submit their work for published authors to review and comment on. If people want a taste for the conference without committing to the twoday agenda, they can attend the boot camp on February 8 to gain insight on where you can grow in your work and in the industry. While these responsibilities can be demanding, Jen says she is always a Southlake mom first. She manages the family’s home and ensures her children are cared for. She also has strong ties to the community by acting as a substitute teacher at Carroll High School and a regular volunteer at her church. But, that passion for writing continues to push her forward. She currently has both women’s fiction and children’s literature projects in the works. She will soon be releasing a sequel to the first novel set in Colonial America. Until then, she will continue to travel through time by writing new narratives. “There’s a hungry group of readers wanting more of this genre,” Jen says. So, Jen will continue to feed her audience and her passion for the genre, one love story at a time.
I thought I’d just write a book I’d want to read... my goal is to craft beautiful sentences and great literature through my writing.”

The pass normally costs $20 per month, but the city is eliminating that in hopes to get more locals engaged with their group fitness classes. The challenge will end with the Superhero 5K and Fun Run held on March 17 at Bicentennial Park. AUTHOR STUART GIBBS VISITS CARROLL ISD INTERMEDIATE SCHOOLS The Eubanks and Durham intermediate schools welcomed New York Times best-selling author Stuart Gibbs earlier last month. He spoke with students about his career as an author and what motivates him. Best known for his children’s book series Spy School, Gibbs was a familiar figure to many students. He even autographed books for the students and had an open question and answer time after he spoke. He shared that his first inspiration to write hit him at seven years old after watching a James Bond film. Even at seven, Gibbs said he knew he wanted to become an author. He encouraged students at both schools to chase after what career they are interested in, even if it seems far-fetched.

HAVEN DENTAL State-of-the-Art Practice Puts People First
I
n spite of working hard to open his new practice in time, Dr. Tyler Brady recently went on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic. This is at the heart of his inspiration in founding Haven Dental – serving others. And his dental philosophy reflects that: “I believe in treating all people the best way possible, and showing them that they are thought about and loved,” Dr. Brady says.
30 • FEB 18
The name Haven Dental immediately clues in patients on what to expect. A welcoming waiting room with comfy sofas and a gourmet coffee bar. State-of-the-art dental chairs that can provide a heated massage as you watch Netflix listening with your bluetooth headphones...and get your teeth cleaned. Hot towels are also on-hand for total relaxation. This dentist office is not your childhood dread – it’s an inviting atmosphere that puts you at ease using the latest technology. “I wanted a name that makes people feel comfortable,” Dr. Brady says. “Many people are pretty timid about going to the dentist and I wanted to reiterate that this is a place where they’ll be taken care of and a place where they can feel safe and appreciated.” Beyond that, Haven Dental is a practice that aims to have an impact far beyond its walls. Prior to even opening the
SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE
doors of his practice, Dr. Brady began to serve others all over the world through his “We Heart You” initiative; being partnered with Willie Griffith Ministries – a missionary couple in Kenya; LDS Africa Smiles – a nonprofit providing dental care in Africa; The DentMed Advocacy Fund – a local charity that will be funding smile makeovers free of charge for Haven Dental; Smiles for Central America - another dental expedition; and his alma mater, Tufts University’s School of Dental Medicine. When he says he puts service first, Dr. Brady means it in its most literal sense. “I’m a huge believer in starting off right, not going ‘Oh, we’ll do that next month’ or ‘We’ll start that next year,’” Dr. Brady says. “I like to start off the way I would like things to be and work with what I have to make it happen.” To support this “We Heart You” project, Haven Dental works with the DentMed Advocacy Fund to donate dental kits. A kit may consist of a toothbrush, floss, toothpaste, sugar-free gum and other items depending on where it is being sent. For example, Dr. Brady included some warm hats in the dental kits sent to Tufts University. The various Tufts student groups, under his direction, will reach out to the homeless population in Boston. Haven Dental is helping supply these groups with kits, but Dr. Brady also added hats to each package, because in his words: “It’s freezing up there.” But he isn’t stopping there. Dr. Brady hopes to one day start up a scholarship fund for predental students unable to afford traveling for a dental expedition. He traveled to Honduras for a dental expedition before attending dental school and would like for others to have the same opportunity. And while service is something that is clearly high-priority to the team at Haven Dental, Dr. Brady says patients are always welcome to join in these efforts as well. “Every patient that comes through our doors will be able to help,” he says. “We have adopted a practice that when you get that free toothbrush after your visit, one will be donated to someone in need, you can even donate yours!” For Dr. Brady, choosing to open in Southlake was partially inspired by the service aspect of his practice. “I think there are many people in Southlake who want to help other people,” he says. “There is such a strong sense of community here, I felt it was the perfect place to get started.” Beyond that, Dr. Brady wanted a place to practice his other passion: cosmetic dentistry. While Haven Dental is by no means limited to cosmetic dentistry, Dr. Brady specializes
I believe in treating all people the best way possible, and showing them that they are thought about, and loved in dental implants and improving people’s smiles. In fact, he is part of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists as well as the International Academy of Ceramic Implantology and the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Additionally, Dr. Brady serves as a family dentist and is ready to care for your entire family’s dental needs. At Haven Dental, the team strives to be transparent and make patients feel at home and at ease. “I feel like there are so many people looking for a dentist that has their best interest at heart,” Brady says. “Not only do I want to do that for my patients, I want to set a new standard of dentistry that can reach out and help as many people as possible.” “I want to give my very best to Southlake, and I hope that they can see that through the effort I have put into building this practice.”

BOX
If your date is a bit more Holly Golightly than Daisy Buchanan or more Jack Dawson than Mr. Darcy, we have some ideas just for you. We have nothing against traditional dates, and your partner probably doesn’t either. These are simply a few ways to keep them on their toes. The best part: all of these suggestions are right in your own backyard. Because who isn’t tired of driving to Dallas or Fort Worth on Valentine’s Day?
GET COOKING:
If your date doesn’t mind getting their hands messy, try out a cooking class at TasteBuds Kitchen. We know what you’re thinking: Why not just cook at home if you’re going to have to cook your own meal? The answer: convenience, trained professionals and learning experiences. All ingredients are already there, so no grocery shopping necessary! To further sweeten the deal, TasteBuds is hosting a Valentine’s Date Night. The adult/BYOB class will be centered around Italian cuisine. Participants will learn how to make a delicious Chicken Parmesan, Wild Mushroom & Truffle Oil Risotto, sweet pink Cannolis and more. Don’t forget to bring the vino.
GET GAMING:
Work up a bit of nostalgia by taking your date to an arcade. Remember those days? But they just got a lot better because Free Play Arcade in Arlington is far more than fun and games – it’s food, drinks and games! After a rousing round of Galaga, treat yourself and your date to a refreshing round of one of the many local brews Free Play has on tap. According to their website, Free Play has one of the largest selections in North Texas. Enjoy a “shareable” of mini street tacos to top off a perfect night. Close to home and a guaranteed good time, this is one date that will please both Mr. and Ms. Pac-Man.
GET THINKING:
What better way to bond than to escape? But we aren’t talking about a last-minute flight to Vegas. Rather, solve a murder mystery at Red Door Escape Room. With multiple scenarios to choose from and rooms that are available for two to six participants, Red Door Escape Room can also serve as a fun group date location. Grab some other couples and get solving! Just be sure to book a room in advance.
GET WALKING:
Change it up a little by celebrating a bit early. The weekend before Valentine’s Day, The Sweetheart Wine Trail in Grapevine is back for its ninth year. The event allows guests to stroll through the historic downtown and visits participating wineries at their own pace. Participating wineries include Cross Timbers Winery, Grape Vine Springs Winery, Homestead Winery, Messina Hof, Sloan and Williams, Wine Fusion and Umbra. Each ticket-holder is given a commemorative wine glass and three wine samplings per winery, paired with food. The event is held on Saturday, Feb. 10 and the following Sunday. FEB 18 • 35

B
edrooms have long served as the ultimate space for self-expression. These areas are often invitation-only, so the average houseguest won’t be peering in and judging your decor. This is especially true for master bedrooms. This is your chance to once and for all forget about what other people think. If this is a shared space, think of decorating as an opportunity to blend your partner’s taste with your own. Or don’t. It’s up to both of you. Isn’t compromise fun? We know it can be tough to find your own style, so we have provided you with two opposite trends we think you’ll love. STAYING SIMPLE Minimalism has been in for a while now, but it seems to have a delayed effect on the master bedroom. For a while, the big thing was to have a miniature sitting room in your bedroom. If you went for that trend – many of us did – we have to ask: Did you ever use the chairs for more than a new place for laundry? If so, keep it! We love the idea of having a place to escape and curl up with coffee and a book. A place where the kids aren’t buzzing around.
854 Harpole Road | $2,200,000 But, if you haven’t been getting much use out of an elaborately decorated master bedroom, strip it down. Simple nightstands and an iron bed frame can still go a long way. Add a few shelves and a rug for pops of color, but don’t feel obligated to decorate from floor to ceiling. Wall art can consist of one statement piece and a few sconces. Liven it up with some succulents – the ultimate minimalist’s 24 Oxford Place | $999,999plant – and call it a day. It may sound clichéd, but in some cases, less really is more. FOUR-POSTER PALACE This directly contradicts the previous suggestion, but that’s the exciting part of finding your style. Are you a traditionalist at heart? If so, four-poster beds are the way to go. For centuries, four-poster beds have been a symbol of wealth, appearing in Renaissance museum exhibPENDING | 1700paintings Bur Oak |and $1,694,000 its displaying the lives of royalty. However, those bed frames have evolved over the years, and like many old-fashioned furniture pieces, can take on whatever style you want. In fact, there are even four-poster beds out there that can still properly reflect minimalism. But if you want a bed fit for royalty, we recommend going big with a wood frame, canopy, curtains and more.

ucked in a cozy corner of Southlake’s new Unleavened Fresh Kitchen, Olivia Bennett Teeuws’ infectious smile speaks for itself. Her excitement to be back in Southlake, just steps from where she opened her first art gallery at age 14, radiates the room. “It’s surreal sitting in Southlake Town Square, all these years later,” Olivia says with a smile. For the past six years, she has been living in California, with a brief stint in Chicago, but is now back in Southlake…back to where her art career began. A HEALTHY ESCAPE FROM A.L.L. LEUKEMIA Olivia was always into art. Her creative side showed early as she would embellish coloring book princess dresses and shade brilliantly inside the lines. Her mother started entering her colorings and drawings in local contests for fun when Olivia was only 4 years old. But just a year later, that playful love would turn into a full-blown passion brought on by a serious diagnosis. Just before entering kindergarten, Olivia went in for her routine well-check visit. Having recently relocated to Salt Lake City, her parents assumed Olivia’s recent fatigue was simply from her adjusting to her new life. But, her bloodwork told a different story. Within days, Olivia, age 5, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (A.L.L.), a rapidly progressing cancer in which the bone marrow produces too many immature white blood cells preventing the body’s ability to fight infection. She immediately began chemotherapy. During that difficult time, her creative art process transformed from hobby to self-expression, budding a passion that would carry through her life to where she is today. “It was an emotional outlet that I’d get completely lost in for hours. It was an escape, a form of communication,” describes Olivia of her dark days at home brightened by her lap desk, art supplies and pile of coloring books. Art became a beautiful distraction from the pain and loneliness that cancer causes in even its youngest patients. SOUTHLAKE BECOMES THE HEARTBEAT OF HER CAREER In early 2000, three years into remission, her love for art remained. With renewed energy, her art began to grow in scale while continuing to spread the same bright message of peace and joy.

into a tailspin of media each and every time. She went on to meet President George W. Bush and appeared in dozens of publications ranging from Teen People to Southern Living. Art became Olivia’s life and she found it painful to do anything else. OPENING HER FIRST GALLERY AT AGE 14
Olivia’s family relocated from Salt Lake City to Southlake where she enrolled in the fourth grade at Rockenbaugh Elementary School. She was sitting in art class, a day she clearly remembers, when the districtwide call went out in search for the student who could design the best T-shirt for Southlake’s inaugural Art in the Square. She was ecstatic to hear of the contest and immediately began a watercolor of Southlake’s trademark gazebo and fountain along 1709. When the contest ended, she received a call from Southlake Women’s Club that they loved her design, but it was simply too detailed to be put on the shirt. Instead, they offered her a booth and gave her three months to prepare. The show was an instant hit. Her artwork received immediate attention, but there was one problem. No one believed Olivia was the artist. At first, Olivia’s mother decided to hide out behind the booth to make sure Olivia received attention as the artist, but then, something even better dawned on Olivia. “Why not do a live painting so everyone can see that I really am the artist,” thought Olivia. So that is exactly what she did, drawing an enthusiastic crowd, impressing not just the adults, but her classmates too. As the weekend came to a close, Olivia had sold 24 paintings, taking home $1700. As a fourth grader. She was hooked. FROM ART IN THE SQUARE TO OPRAH Right then and there in the heart of Southlake Town Square, Olivia’s career planted its roots. She began to travel to art shows around the state, and, by age 12, she had written and published her very first art book. The local press had picked up on her talent calling her a “child prodigy,” “artist extraordinaire” and “entrepreneur,” but the biggest break of all came when Olivia Bennett’s name landed in front of Oprah Winfrey. It was 2002. She was 12 years old, her hair was bright blonde, and she found herself standing back stage, face to face with an incredibly nervous Josh Groban. The episode, “Young People with Extraordinary Talent,” turned out to be such a highly rated episode, it was aired a subsequent three times sending Olivia 66 • FEB 18
As an 8th grader at Dawson Middle School, Olivia had officially gained the status of successful artist and businesswoman; all achieved without a road map, without a formula… just a passion. It was then that a friend suggested to her she should open up a space to sell her art. She had gained confidence citywide, and that confidence in her couldn’t have been any clearer than when the late Brian Stebbins offered her a sixmonth lease in town square. On December 8, 2004, with the full support of her family, friends and the city of Southlake, she moved in to her new space, 100 percent self-funded, opening her very own art gallery to the public. “I didn’t start out saying, ‘I’m going to be a professional artist.’ Instead, I just followed my passion,” says Olivia as she reflects on this life-changing achievement at such a young age. “The root of it has always been just doing what you love.” Passion is what has always set Olivia apart. From here, Olivia’s life took on a new challenge: finding balance. Her art career was in full-swing and so was her academic life. She turned to homeschooling so she could travel for art shows, work in her gallery and continue to paint. Over the next five years, her success kept growing. She continued doing what she loved, graduated high school, eventually moved her art gallery to a new location and added teaching art classes to her repertoire. GROWING OUTSIDE OF ART It was there in that second gallery on a cold, December day that she met her husband, John Teeuws. After seeing him walk through her gallery door, she instantly smacked her mother on the arm and whispered, “There is something special about that guy.” And there absolutely was. A year and a half later, they married in Santa Fe, New Mexico and headed west for his career. It was her journey in California that led to finding herself in so many new ways. “All fell into place here, doing what I love, working with charities and giving back,” Olivia says of her memories that birthed her new passion: painting for charity. She also discovered a love for design as they gutted and remodeled their 1960s bungalow, only to turn around and repeat it again after work called them to Chicago. In January of 2015, John and Olivia welcomed an adorable, blue-eyed little boy to the world. Being a mother became one of the most precious gifts and hardest jobs Olivia’s ever been given. After a cold Chicago winter, the Teeuwses headed back to California, where they have been for the last two years. Last summer, John was offered the opportunity to return to the Dallas area, and the Teeuwses could not get here fast enough. “When I left Southlake, I realized there was so much about it that I took for granted. Relocating was a big adjustment,” says Olivia. While she has loved everywhere she has had an SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

opportunity to live, there really is no place like home. And to Olivia, home is synonymous with Southlake. “Southlake has such heart. Despite its growth, it maintains a small-town, village mentality where people genuinely care for and take interest in one another,” Olivia shares of moving home. “Southlake really sets itself apart from other places due its emphasis on family values, school pride, hospitality and the philanthropic heartbeats of the residents. It is the perfect place to raise a family. My heart has never left Texas,” says Olivia.
She is creating partnerships with local and national organizations to use her love for “live” painting to inspire, encourage, fundraise and give back. Painting on stage gives Olivia a rush, “I come alive, I paint better. It takes it to another level. The music, talking to people, it’s a great experience, full of making connections and connections are what it is all about.” Olivia’s only been back in Texas for a few months and she has already made her mark through her talent, partnering with Jewel Charity, who fundraises for Cooks and Make-A-Wish North Texas. In addition to her philanthropic efforts, Olivia is teaching art to teenagers and adults locally as well as hosting online tutorial sessions.
PAINTING FOR CHARITY
LIVING WITH PASSION
Now back where her heart belongs, Olivia has found herself on her best mission yet. “Everything in my life is rooted back to art. This is something I love, what I want to do,” Olivia shares. Looking back over the last two decades, Olivia credits her success to the grace of God. Even as a young girl going through chemo, she prayed. She didn’t always know to whom she was praying, but she felt God working. At 28, Olivia wants to do something positive with these divine blessings. In efforts to give back, Olivia focuses on painting for charity to raise money for those causes close to her heart.
At a young age, art became Olivia’s passion. A passion that brought light when darkness obscured. Twenty-three years later and Olivia is still chasing that same light in which gave her so much strength, even on days when she had little strength remaining. Looking back, Olivia calls her cancer treatment “a blessing in disguise.” She says, “It is a horrific diagnosis for any parent to hear, but there is always a silver lining.” Olivia’s silver lining sparkles with inspiration, hard work and divine success. And when asked if she had any advice for young cancer patients, her eyes twinkled as she shared, “This is just a short chapter of pain, but there is so much opportunity for a beautiful and full life ahead. Don’t lose hope. Keep a picture in your mind of your next chapter and keep moving forward.”

he world can be a dangerous place, so it’s important to take the measures necessary to keep your family out of harm’s way. While there are loads of home security systems out there, many of them can look bulky when matched with your home’s décor. But with the Nest Secure starter pack, you don’t have to decide between safety and style. Nest’s products are known for their advances in technology and miniminalistic feel, which makes them seamless additions to your home’s interior. And their Secure line is no different with its high tech, yet sleek creations. With the starter pack, you will receive one Nest Guard – the control panel and brain behind the system, two Nest Detects – the motion and alert monitoring tools, and two Nest Tags, the smart keychains that turn everything on or off with a quick tap. You can also download the Nest app to manage your home’s security system while away. Whether you want to get security notifications sent to your phone, switch the alarm on or off, find out what exit triggered the alarm or call the police, it’s all right at your fingertips.
You can also link their Nest Cam Indoor or Nest Cam Outdoor tools to your app to get a look inside your home in real time. The security system easily harmonizes with your normal life thanks to its technological advances. Instead of disarming your entire home when you need to let the dog out or grab the paper, you can initiate quiet open to use one exit without sounding off the alarms. You can also turn on Pathlight to help you navigate through your home after dark, or you can set up Dog Pass so that your smaller pets can’t turn on the alarm when scooting around the house. Depending on the size of your home, you may need to add on more of Nest’s products like extra Nest Detects for other exits and Nest Connect to link products that are further away from your Nest Guard, but it’s all worth having a secure and sophisticated system in your home. While it is an easy set up, you can also connect with a Nest Pro on their website who will get your system up and running with a proper installation.

A Rare Treat – Without Traffic PERRY’S STEAKHOUSE IS NOW MUCH CLOSER TO HOME

ay goodbye to trudging all the way to Frisco or Uptown for your Perry’s Steakhouse and Grille fix. Despite a few delays, the steakhouse is opening in Grapevine this month, much to the delight of local carnivores. The location – right at the corner of Highway 114 and Southlake Boulevard – is perfect. The menu promises to give guests the same thrills that the other locations serve up. And while the signature chateaubriand will remain consistent among the North Texas eateries, Perry’s in Grapevine will have a few promising twists to set it apart. “Every detail in the restaurant was deliberately selected to create an inviting environment that the local community should appreciate,” founder and owner Chris Perry says. Those who frequent the other two Dallas-
area locations will immediately notice a vibrant new interior look. From the exquisite use of glass, a vivid color palette, modern lighting and other textures, Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille is getting a Grapevine makeover, aptly showcasing a towering wine wall. “Perry’s Grapevine will feature a towering wine wall offering hundreds of wines researched to complement the menu perfectly, including rare vintages from all major wine regions of the world as well as Perry’s own private reserve Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon,” Perry says. While still remaining as elegant as ever, the steakhouse is down-to-earth in the sense that a pork chop Friday lunch doesn’t seem out of the question. The lunch menu features delectable entrees and entrée salads at rea-

sonable prices. For example, the aforementioned pork chop is served with whipped potatoes and homemade applesauce for $15. As the sun goes down, however, Perry’s delicately transforms its menu into one even more worthy of special occasions. With menu prices easily landing in the $50-range for meat alone, the steakhouse can serve as the venue for a perfect date night – hint: Valentine’s Day is this month. With an emphasis on the company’s mantra of proving a “Rare and Well Done Experience,” Perry’s Steakhouse is truly a meat-eater’s paradise. The restaurant serves up unexpected specialties such as its famous seven-finger-high pork chop carved tableside. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves – the appetizers are just as tempting. Tantalize your palate with Perry’s Signature Fried Asparagus – topped with jumbo lump crabmeat – or the Asian Ahi Tuna Tartare. It would be a gross oversight to skim past the soups and salads. With menu items ranging from creamy Lobster Bisque to savory Spinach & Warm Bacon Vinaigrette Salad, it’s hard to save room for the main course. But, it’s well worth it. Signature entrees include Filet Perry – a filet mignon wrapped with Nueske’s applewood smoked bacon topped with jumbo lump crabmeat and herb garlic butter and served with steamed asparagus – as well as the Chateaubriand, which is carved tableside with a Truffle Merlot Demiglace, Béarnaise and Peppercorn reduction sauces. For those more on the pescetarian spectrum, the seafood at Perry’s is its own showstopper. The Pecan-Crusted Gulf Red Snapper is topped with jumbo lump crabmeat and white wine sauce. For a more rare experience, try the Sushi-Grade Sesame Crusted Ahi-Tuna, served with red chili lime, miso butter and sushi rice. If you have managed to save room for dessert, Perry’s Steakhouse is well known for its flaming treats. This includes decadent dishes such as Mont Blanc a la Frisc – vanilla ice cream served on a homemade sponge cake with freshly cut strawberries, topped with a flambéed Belgian white chocolate sauce and Bailey’s Irish Cream. It doesn’t end there. The Nutty D’angelo is another fiery dessert, consisting of crushed pecans flambéed with brown sugar and brandy and served over vanilla ice cream, dipped in white chocolate and toasted almonds. While all of these menu items are more than worth the drive to Frisco or Uptown, it can now be enjoyed just a few miles from home.

With all of life’s normal craziness, it can be hard to slow down and enjoy Valentine’s Day. And with this year’s holiday falling on a Wednesday, it’s even easier to put off celebrating for a rainy day. However, it’s important to take the time to show your special someone you care, even if it’s just for a quick meal before starting your day. This year, plan a breakfast date at a local favorite like Crepes Bistro in Colleyville to enjoy delicious food and your partner’s loving company. The family-owned restaurant dishes out breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert options six days a week, so there’s always a reason to stop in. As the name suggests, the open kitchen is best known for its delicious crepes. These French specialities get their name from the Latin word crispa, meaning curled. That comes to life after each crepe’s flakey, pancake-like exterior is filled with highquality ingredients, folded over to be plated and served with complimentary sauces and toppings. Whether you choose to travel down the sweet or savory route, there is the perfect crepe for you on their menu. With romance in the air and chocolate easily flowing this time of year, we recommend you treat yourself to their Nutella crepe. Filled with bananas, strawberries and almonds, this crepe lets you feel good about indulging on breakfast. After one look of the infamous chocolate sauce and powdered sugar on top, you are sure to be smitten. While it does have a lot of sweet elements, the crepe is packed with healthy fruits that will give you the boost needed to tackle the rest of your day. Order yours with a yogurt parfait on the side to balance out your sweet choice. Or, go all in and pair it with a hazelnut mocha to satisfy all of your chocolate cravings in one sitting. Owner Yasser Alkazzaz has lived in Keller for 15 years and knew a crepe eatery would be a great addition to the area’s dining scene. While his background and training is in engineering, his passion for cooking and his FrenchAmerican heritage lead him to develop and purse this unique restaurant concept. There’s really nothing like it in the area, so it’s known to draw in people from all over looking to try something new. Since he opened the doors in 2016, Alkazzaz has built up their menu to include more quick-service options like paninis, quiches and salads. He also has gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan selections, so everyone can find something to enjoy. If you don’t have time to dine in, you can always run in to grab an espresso macchiato and a bakery item like their macarons and fruit tarts to recreate the bistro’s magic in the comfort of your own home. Don’t skimp out on your next date. Head over to Crepes Bistro to enjoy an easy, romantic breakfast with your Valentine.

SOUTHLAKE POLICE OFFICER SHARES PERFECT BOND WITH ‘TOP PATROL DOG’ DUCO
S
outhlake Police Officer Nathaniel Anderson has served this community for more than 10 years. In that time, he has built an important bond. While camaraderie is certainly common among police officers, Officer Anderson’s partner is of the four-legged variety. K-9 Duco joined the team in 2015. Since then, the two have worked together to keep Southlake safe – and it has not gone unnoticed. Officer Anderson and Duco recently received the national award of Top Patrol Dog at the North American Police Working Dog Association. It takes hard work to form a great team, but Officer Anderson and Duco are always up for the challenge. DUCO AND I BECAME A TEAM… in March 2015. Prior to Duco, I had another K-9 partner named Ruckus. He was medically retired after being on the team for three and a half years. BEFORE BECOMING AN OFFICER… I worked with juveniles in every aspect from leading a Scared Straight program, being a detention officer, caseworker and probation officer. I have approximately 12 years experience working with troubled youth. CREATING A BOND WITH A WORKING DOG… is like creating a bond with a friend. It takes time, understanding and trust. Only difference is friends don’t physically bite (I hope). They have personalities just like humans, so you must understand their moods and their body language. Having a working police dog is not a relationship that’s about showing who’s in control because you must work as a team. Once that bond is created, the love is unconditional from that point forward. I PRIDE MYSELF ON… Duco and I being a reliable resource, not only for the citizens and officers of Southlake but also for any agency that may need our assistance. THERE IS NO SUCH THING… as an average day for Duco and me. On any given day, we can be conducting a school search, assisting the narcotics unit, assisting an outside agency, conducting SWAT training, conducting weekly K-9 training, conducting a Public Education Demo or working patrol. Our primary purpose is to assist patrol. I CONSIDER MYSELF A… restrictive dog person. I’m not the guy who’s about to the let my dog sleep in the bed or jump up on furniture. I’ve always had dogs as pets since I was a kid – mainly
German shepherds and pit bulls. Before becoming a handler, my knowledge of canines was extremely limited. I knew how to train dogs to do the basic obedience and how to protect my home, but I had no clue about how to read a canine’s body language or to understand what motivated them. ONE OF THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT K-9 UNITS IS THAT… handlers wanted the meanest, craziest and most intimidating dog, the ones where even their fellow officers couldn’t approach the car. Those types of K-9s are a liability to departments as well as to handlers and their families. Police K-9s are not vicious animals. They do what they are told and trained to do. They are a valuable resource for any agency. MY FAMILY CONSISTS OF MY… two sons, ages 16 and 10, who are pretty active in sports and like spending my money. I WAS INSPIRED TO BECOME A POLICE OFFICER BECAUSE… I was born and raised in in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and I grew up with distrust for law enforcement, mainly for a lot of the reasons that you see in the news today. While in college, I accepted an internship at a boys’ group home which began my career working with juveniles. While working with juveniles, I had to interact and work with law enforcement and those positive interactions changed my perception of the field. Eventually I stepped out on faith, applied to become an officer and here I am.

Have You Gone Country? Stomp your boots and enjoy the sounds of country megastar Alan Jackson
A
lan Jackson’s music isn’t something you can just listen to — his music demands to be felt, enjoyed and blared loudly from the rolled-down windows of your truck. Now this country music icon (and newly inducted Country Music Hall of Fame artist) is rolling into town to perform at Verizon Theatre as part of his Honky Tonk Highway Tour! Come dressed in your best blue jeans and beat-up cowboy boots, and get ready to dance the night away to old school favorites like “Chattahoochee,” “Gone Country” and “It’s Five O’ Clock Somewhere.” Expect to hear (and fall in love with) new songs at the concert as well, including his most recent single “The Older I Get.” For almost 30 years, Jackson has been writing and singing songs about love, beer, hard work and living life, through the sounds of classic honky tonk, mainstream county, bluegrass and gospel. With 24 albums under his belt, including two Christmas albums and four greatest hits collections, Jackson knows a thing or two about making good music. His sexy country twang and catchy melodies have earned him 35 number one singles, more than 150 industry awards (with 18 Academy of Country Music Awards, 16 Country Music Association Awards and two Grammy Awards), and almost 60 million album sales. Even though he has had a long, successful career, Jackson is still a down-home country boy at heart. His music will still make you want to stomp your boots, sip on a cold drink and celebrate life. The older we get, the more we realize how wonderful those things—and Alan Jackson himself—really are.
