unconditional love At Southlake Style, every day starts with the sound of paws thumping on concrete and the playful jingling of dog tags as my two golden retrievers race to meet their morning biscuit. Lovingly bestowed from the festive paw-printed jar by the first available team member, it’s a fun tradition that always starts the day with a smile. Sparky and Rory are not just part of my family — they are part of the team at Southlake Style. They greet visitors, join staff meetings and fetch many likes on Instagram. Most importantly, they’re by my and Nicole’s side giving us unconditional love through good days and bad. That type of love is the hallmark of all of our human-pet relationships. Thanks to the record number of readers who shared cute photos and stories of their four-legged friends, Sparky and Rory weren’t the only pets on our minds this month. Giving unconditionally is also what binds together those in our community, including several locals we’ve highlighted in “Southlake Samaritans.” Whether they’re organizing large-scale cultural events or simply delivering meals to those in need, these standout citizens know nothing is too big or small when they are giving unto others.

PLAYWRIGHT

FROM THE PAGE TO THE STAGE, THIS WRITER HAS DONE IT ALL

ask A. . dave lieber

HOW DID YOU START WRITING? When I was a teenager, I wanted to be a columnist just like my hero, Pete Hamill from “The New York Post.” In 1993, I was hired as a columnist at “The Fort Worth Star-Telegram,” and I was there for 20 years before I became a watchdog columnist for “The Dallas Morning News.” HOW DID YOU TRANSITION TO PLAYWRITING? I’ve written nine books and two plays during my 29 years as a writer. My first play was about Amon Carter, who was called Mr. Fort Worth and owned the “Star-Telegram,” WBAP Radio and Channel 5. It was called “Amon: The Ultimate Texan,” and it ran 36 times in six cities from 2019 to 2020. WHAT’S YOUR NEWEST SHOW ABOUT? My new show is called “PEROT! American Patriot,” and it tells the remarkable story of Ross Perot Sr. and how he built his family fortune. The emphasis is on the family’s values and how love, business smarts and philanthropy was passed down from one generation to the next. It’s set for nine shows at the Coppell Arts Center, with opening night set for Feb. 11. HOW DIFFERENT IS IT TO WRITE A PLAY THAN IT IS TO WRITE A COLUMN? Surprisingly, they’re not all that different. Whether it’s a column, a book or a play, I’m concerned with getting the facts right and telling people the truth. Playwriting is a lot like news writing, because stories are just scenes, and plays are just scenes as well. WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO DO A SHOW FOCUSED ON ROSS PEROT SR.? When he passed away in 2019, I saw how much love people had for him all over the world. When I started reading about his life, I was amazed at all of the things he accomplished and wanted to bring his life story to the stage. Texans love their heroes — that’s why I decided to do this show. WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO REGARDING YOUR RETURN TO PLAYWRITING? I’m most looking forward to seeing people’s reactions as they walk out of the theater ecstatic over what they just watched. I saw people’s reactions to my first play two years ago, and it was so magical that I wanted to write another play immediately afterward. I wanted to experience that same writer’s high all over again.

Dysfunctional Romance

E

veryone enjoys a good love story, especially during the month of February. But few love stories are as crazy, dysfunctional and wildly entertaining as the story of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee. This month, get up close and personal in more ways than one in Hulu’s new eight-episode miniseries “Pam & Tommy.” Directed by Craig Gillespie, who knows a thing or two about dysfunctional characters with the likes of “Lars & The Real Girl,” “I, Tonya” and “Cruella,” “Pam & Tommy” shows Pamela and Tommy’s married life and the days leading up to their biggest release in 1997. Lily James sheds her “Cinderella” slippers for the iconic “Baywatch” swimsuit while Sebastian Stan trades the Winter Soldier’s arm to make room for Tommy Lee’s many tattoos and piercings. At least Seth Rogan seems to be having fun as the show’s developer and co-star, which is more than you can say about his appearance in last year’s “Santa Inc.” If TMZ and controversy isn’t as much your style, then maybe Jennifer Lopez might be in her newest rom-com “Marry Me.” Charlie Day and Jenny Slate make their comedic return in “I Want You Back,” though don’t expect us to say the same thing for the “Bel-Air” reboot without Will Smith. At least we can look forward to “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” to deliver the laughs that we love.

That includes the ones submitted into our fourth annual Southlake Stylin’ Pets Contest, sponsored by Creekside Pet Care Center. SIMONE THE LYNX POINT SIAMESE Rescued from a shelter when she was very young, Simone embodies everything that it means to be a cat. Shy but mischievous, the 3-year-old Lynx Point Siamese has a penchant for hiding underneath the coffee table and springing at people’s ankles when the opportunity arises. While she can be a little skittish around others and hides when something scares her, Simone nevertheless loves taking long naps and receiving affection. “We love having her as part of our family,” her owner Brandy Trotter says. “She makes us smile with her silly personality and playful nature.”

KODIAK THE POMERANIAN With a happy-go-lucky personality and lots of energy, Kodiak is flipping the script on what it means to be a senior dog. Adopted at 10 weeks old, Kodiak has worked as a therapy dog in hospitals, moved around to many places and saw his family grow during his 11 years with the Gordans. “Everyone seems surprised to learn he’s 11,” Kodiak’s owner Michelle says. “He’s young at heart and always gives the biggest smile to anyone who gives him attention.” Some of Kodiak’s favorite things to do include chasing his cat siblings, showing off new tricks and eating as many treats as his owners will give him.

TROMBONE THE RUSSIAN TORTOISE It’s hard to imagine a time when nobody wanted to adopt a Russian tortoise as lovable as Trombone. But that all changed in August 2021 when he found his forever family in Madeline Ricketts. Shy yet sweet, Trombone is nervous in nature but can be affectionate once he opens up to you. His favorite things to do are push his ball around, eat Romaine lettuce and climb around his pen. “Trombone is special because he is so kind-natured,” Madeline says. “He prefers to look at you and hear your voice rather than cuddle and be held. We’re lucky to have him as a member of our family.”

MR. WATSON THE SHIBA INU Don’t let the furry exterior fool you. While he’s cute, fluffy and incredibly adorable, Mr. Watson is as loyal, fierce and independent as they come. A 10-year-old Shiba Inu, Mr. Watson acts more like a cat than he does a dog, often keeping to himself rather than socializing with others. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t like to have fun in his own way, whether he’s playing fetch, chasing his owners or posing for Instagram. “He’s like a perpetual puppy,” owner Shelley Bergbower says. “He tells us when it’s time to eat, take a walk or go to bed like clockwork. He is very routine in that way.”

JAXXON THE LABRADOR RETRIEVER Adopted in March 2020 at 7 months old, Jaxxon quickly became a beloved member of the Norton family. Though he was born deaf, he never lets that slow him down. A labrador retriever, Jaxxon loves to fetch things, dig around in the mud and chase his fur siblings Misfit and Byron Blueberry-Kisscake Nelson. No matter where he goes, Jaxxon’s owner Alison says he always wears his “deaf dog” collar with pride. “Jaxxon is big, goofy and very playful,” Alison says. “And a loud barker, since he does not seem to understand the volume he is able to produce. We call him ‘Bob Barker.’”

GEORGE THE SKINNY PIG With two dogs, a hamster and a bearded dragon, Lisa Paige wasn’t looking to add another animal to the family. Yet the minute she laid eyes on George, Lisa knew she needed to have him. A 1-year-old bare skinny pig the size of a sweet potato, George loves to eat treats and let the zoomies out as he zips around any room he’s in. But his favorite thing is snuggling with others, regardless of whether it’s with another human or animal. “Sometimes I’ll put him next to my golden retriever, and he’ll just sit there and let her lick him,” Lisa says. “He doesn’t care. He just loves the attention.”

Pet Love’s Owner Is Building A Mobile Grooming Empire

I

f you've ever been around town, chances are you’ve seen the purple-and-white trucks of Pet Love Mobile Grooming driving from one appointment to another. Purchased by Southlake resident Barbara Stone in 2003, Pet Love Mobile Grooming has exploded since then, with stylists serving as many as 200 dogs and cats per day. From training groomers to growing her fleet of mobile vans, Barbara loves pampering pets and can’t wait to expand her operation across the state.

WE MOVED [TO SOUTHLAKE] IN… 1992. We actually brought our three kids here, because we wanted to live in the country where they could grow up in a small town. All the kids went K-12 at all the Southlake schools. We’re diehard Southlake folks. We have a soft spot in our heart for Southlake for sure. MY HUSBAND AND I… bought an existing company in 2003. They’d already changed the name to Pet Love — it had previously been Puppy Love for years. But it was a small, personally owned company in Dallas. MY HUSBAND’S HISTORY WAS… in franchising. We saw an opportunity with a business model that was going to be well-received by people in multiple areas. We saw a franchise opportunity with people wanting to take care of their pets… so that’s what brought us to the company. We saw Dallas being a huge target market and with an opportunity to go into other large metroplex areas. WE HAVE THREE TIMES… more vans and employees than when we first bought the company. We average about 200 appointments a day now versus 80-90 appointments a day then. I’M A HUGE PET LOVER SO… I like to make sure that we’re taking great care of our pets, but I also like to make sure that we’re taking care of our employees. Many of our employees have been with us for 15-20 years. It’s a huge family. WE TAKE CARE OF ALL… breeds of dogs and cats in the Metroplex. We do a basic bath and brush package, or we can do a haircut if it’s a breed that needs a full groom. Usually, [our appointments] are about an hour per pet. Most stylists will see six pets a day give or take, depending on how many are at one house. OUR VANS ARE LIKE… having a salon that you would have anywhere, just on wheels. Everything is hightech. All the equipment that we need is right there. The table is hydraulic, so once the pet is in the van,

22 • FEB 22

the table lifts them up so a stylist doesn’t have to be trying to pick up heavy pets. The tub is basically the same size as a normal tub, so we can accommodate small and large dogs. There’s even a platform in the bottom that lifts up and down, so if a pet is real small, you can get them up to a higher level so they’re not down in this big bottom of a tub. MOST OF OUR CLIENTELE HAVE… standing appointments where they have an automatic [appointment] every four weeks, so they already have a spot on the schedule. But then those that just like to call in and book an appointment, we’re usually able to get them in within a week or two. THE CHALLENGE IS… training people. It takes six months to train someone to groom, so we’re constantly looking for people that have a good work ethic that we can train and bring into this career path. THE THING THAT DIFFERENTIATES US… from other mobile services is that most of those are one person, kind of a mom and pop shop. They have one vehicle, maybe two, whereas we have a whole fleet. We can get to people more rapidly and we can make sure to take care of them. If somebody is out, we have somebody else that can step in and make sure we get things taken care of. I SEE US GROWING INTO… other large metroplex areas before we expand too much outside the DallasFort Worth area. The massive metropolitan areas are really the best for us as far as travel logistics between appointments versus the small towns. I would say going to another massive metropolitan area like Austin would be our next move before we would get too much further out of the Metroplex. IT’S ALWAYS FUN TO ME WHEN… people say, ‘I saw your van today’ or ‘I see your van pass my office every day.’ We’re kind of everywhere all the time, so it feels fun to know that I have a whole fleet out there — that we’re present in a lot of neighborhoods all day, every day.

SOUTHLAKE DPS RESCUES 12-YEAR-OLD FROM SNAKES Southlake DPS helped rescue a 12-year-old girl from a pair of snakes inside a drainage pipe late last month. On Jan. 19, sisters Tori and Carly were playing outside when Tori decided she wanted to explore a drainage pipe and crawled inside it. After she finished looking around, she began to make her way out when stumbled onto a large rat snake. She tried to go around it through another drainage pipe, but there was another large rat snake there too. Carly called their mother, and after she was unable to lift the grate, she called Southlake DPS and officers arrived to help lift the grate and pull Tori out from the drainage. Southlake DPS confirmed that no snakes were harmed while this rescue was taking place.

DRAGON BAND WINS SUDLER SHIELD AWARD The Carroll Dragon Band received a national honor at the tail end of 2021. On Dec. 17, the band was named a recipient of the Sudler Shield Award by the John Philip Sousa Foundation. Every year, the John Philip Sousa Foundation gives this award to high school, youth and international marching bands of world-class excellence. The Carroll Dragon Band was named a recipient for its outstanding performance at the state contest last year. “This is one of the highest honors bestowed upon high school bands,” director of bands Ken Johnson says. “We are extremely excited and honored to receive this recognition.” The foundation will present the Sudler Shield to the Carroll Dragon Band during its spring concert on May 20.

CARROLL CHOIR STUDENT EARNS SPOT IN TEXAS ALL-STATE TENOR-BASS CHOIR One of Carroll Senior High School’s most talented singers will perform at the Texas All-State Tenor-Bass Choir later this month. Competing against other programs throughout the district, region and area, Michael Mazey was chosen for this prestigious honor through a competitive contest throughout the state. According to a media release, this is Michael’s first time to perform as a member of the TMEA All-State organization, finishing in the top 2.6% of over 70,000 musicians. Michael will perform with the AllState Tenor-Bass Choir at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center on Feb. 12 as part of the 2022 Texas Music Educators Association Convention.

This year, 61 yearbooks were recognized, including Southlake Carroll’s 392-page yearbook “Anything But Ordinary.” The 2021 yearbook team includes editor-inchief Lindsay Ryan and section editors Maya Tewari, Afton Fay, Darya Tadlaoui, Breanna Davenport, John Marvel, Peyton Brush and Lauren Pich. All 61 finalists will be considered for the Gold Crown, while the rest will be awarded with Silver Crowns at the CSPA ceremonies in March. “It was an unusual year from beginning to end, and the staff knew they’d have to work incredibly hard to get the yearbook out,” yearbook advisor Natalie Brown says in the media release. “Despite many challenges, they never faltered and instead created something incredibly inclusive and memorable for their community.”

Filming it is even harder,” ProCore Fitness says in a company statement. “That's why we teamed up with Ryan Davis to make it a reality.”

delicious spread of mezze, fresh tapas and an expansive wine list that satisfies every palate. All of this and more awaits you for a romantic night out at Anise Food & Wine Bar. Opening inside The Village Dallas over the winter, Anise is a new pan-Mediterranean restaurant and wine bar that brings all the eclectic flavors of the Mediterranean to you in one sitting. Led by executive chef Aaron Skoultchi, who has been the chef de cuisine at dining destinations like Rapscallion and Boulevardier, Anise is named after the European spice that gives Italian and Levantine dishes their light licorice flavor. It's also a common ingredient found in French, Lebanese and Greek cuisine, all of which Anise unites in one menu.

“Anise is exactly the kind of Mediterranean concept Dallas needs,” says Junior Borges, The Village’s culinary vice president. “It’s relaxed and approachable, yet Aaron’s cooking is sophisticated and layered. It’s the kind of food I always want to eat.” Couples who walk into the establishment are greeted by a plant-filled dining room that seats 40 people. Blue concrete tile lines the walls, evoking a feel of an ancient Moroccan mosaic, while the open display kitchen lets onlookers watch chefs as they prepare their food in realtime. Plus with a nine-seat bar, a spacious patio and a back terrace overlooking a gorgeous grove of oak trees, diners have several options when it comes to where they want to dine at Anise.

LOCALFLAVOR review

Anise’s specialty lies in its wide spread of mezze that helps build up appetites. House-made pita bread is brought to the table that diners can plunge into a variety of dips such as roasted garlic hummus, whipped ricotta or smoked eggplant dip made with tahini, marinated mushrooms and mint. The crispy octopus is one deep-fried option that is complemented by pimenton aioli, chilled white beans and pickled celery. And there are a variety of raw selections as well, including the beef tartare, the rose mignonette oysters and the scallop crudo with a side of las al hangout vinaigrette. For a healthier alternative, Anise offers a variety of salads catered to your taste buds, including green salad, roasted beet salad and fattoush made with fried pita, romaine lettuce and red wine vinaigrette. For a larger spread, Anise has a variety of charcuterie boards with ingredients imported from Greece, Italy and Spain, including cheese that is made with raw sheep’s milk and cow's milk. And for diners in the mood for flatbreads, Anise provides those too with a few hearty toppings. Beef kafta is one such option for the meat lovers out there, while the roasted lamb tops its flatbread with black figs, red onion, sumac and goat cheese. And of course there’s the classic Margherita, which comes with a generous topping of basil, roasted tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella cheese. But it isn’t just the small bites that shine at Anise — the large plates also stand out across 17 hearty entrees. The lamb shoulder tagine is cooked to perfection with Marcona almonds, cumin and couscous, while the whole roasted branzino is charred with padron chimichurri. Anise’s chicken is rubbed with harissa spice while its grilled wester ross salmon is topped with romesco sauce and salsa verde. Vegetarian lovers don’t have to feel left out either with whole cauliflower roasted with green tahini sauce, pepper flakes and toasted pine nuts. Of course, no Mediterranean experience is complete without the wine, and Anise offers several varieties by the glass and bottle. Ten varietals are available on tap, including white wines like Anassa, Scarpetta, Patz & Hall and red wines such as Ken Wright, Daou and Chateau Saint-Andre Corbin. Seventeen other varieties are also available by the glass, including rosé and bubbles. But the fun really begins with the bottle menu, which features over 130 options from vineyards all around the world, including Sicily, Portugal and Tuscany. Whether you enjoy its eclectic spreads or sip on a satisfying glass of wine, the Mediterranean experience comes to life at Anise Food & Wine Bar. “We’re celebrating the whole Mediterranean coast, from Tunisia and Morocco to Spain, France, Italy, Greece and Turkey, to Lebanon and Israel — and of course islands like Sicily and Corsica,” chef Aaron says.

Deliciously Daunting Desserts

The Yard Milkshake Bar Offers ‘Shark Tank’ Sweets Few things are more larger-than-life than The Yard’s eyepopping milkshakes. After seeing The Yard Milkshake Bar featured on an episode of “Shark Tank” in 2019, Anthony DiPasquale decided he was all in on the idea. With his wife, brother and sister-in-law as co-owners, Anthony brought the nationally known milkshakes to Virginia Beach in September 2020 before bringing them closer to home in The Colony just last year. “It’s not your average milkshake — it is a masterpiece,” Anthony says. “These things are handcrafted. It takes some time to build each individual one.” Serving its colossal milkshakes in take-home souvenir Mason jars, The Yard Milkshake Bar stacks so many desserts on top of each other that they nearly spill over. Cookie fans will go crazy for the Cookie Dough Delicious, which features cookie dough ice cream with chocolate chips and an extra scoop of cookie dough, and the Cookie Monster, which has cookie monster ice cream with Cookie Crisp cereal, chocolate and marshmallow cream with a cookie dough ice cream sandwich on top. Those with more refined dessert palates will like the Salted Caramel Cheesecake, which is made with caramel cheesecake, cookie monster and salted caramel ice cream with a slice of New York cheesecake on top, or the Doughnut Touch My Coffees and Cream — a cold-brewed caramelmocha ice cream with crushed Oreos, chocolate drizzle and a glazed doughnut. Even health-conscious diners can indulge in its desserts. The Not Milk? Milkshake is vegan and lactose-friendly, featuring chocolate chunk oat milk vegan ice cream mixed with chocolate soy milk and a vegan chocolate chip cookie. Meanwhile, The Cereal Killer is a gluten-free shake showcasing marshmallow ice cream infused with Fruity Pebbles and red marshmallow drizzle with a Fruity Pebbles treat on top. “The most feedback we get is about the attention to detail,” Anthony says. “When it’s delivered to them, it looks like the picture on the menu.” And if milkshakes aren’t your favorite, all of The Yard Milkshake Bar’s signature shakes come as specialty bowls alongside 36 ice cream flavors, edible cookie dough and floats. The Yard even offers pup cups for your furry friends. “Dallas is such a town where there’s so much food and so much variety and so many things — it’s hard to stand out,” Anthony says. “If anything can possibly stand out, it’s our crazy shakes.”

A Taste Of Texas

Cowtown Brewing Co. Brings Its Taproom To Southlake Pub fans who missed the small-town brews of The Ginger Man have a new taproom to raise a pint in. At the tail end of December, Cowtown Brewing Co. opened up in The Ginger Man’s former location, and residents are thirsty for its beer and barbecue. Originally opening in Fort Worth in 2018, Cowtown Brewing Co. is the brainchild of Billy Avila and Shawn Kidwell, who also serves as the taproom’s principal brewer. Cowtown Brewing Co. produces a wide variety of lager-style beers, including its award-winning German-style High Brau and its No. 1-seller Cold Fort Worth Beer. It also offers a variety of seasonal beers such as the Flux Capacitor doppelbock, the Nick Cold Black Heart imperial stout, the Last Kaiser imperial Marzen and the fruity sour Spirit World. “We have a small barrel program where we age beer in oak barrels,” Shawn says. “We have aged beer in bourbon, rye whiskey, VSOP brandy and even cabernet sauvignon barrels, some of them for up to 18 months.” But brews are only half of the picture at Cowtown Brewing Co. The other half is the barbecue, which comes in both shareable and individual portions. Its brat bites are among its most popular items, with bratwurst and sauerkraut balls rolled and deep-fried to a golden brown crisp. Meanwhile, another hefty option is the melt-in-yourmouth BBQ sliders with either pulled pork or chopped brisket”. The Texas-sized German pretzel comes with a side of beer cheese and spicy mustard for an extra kick, and those looking for larger plates can try the Loaded Cowtown Tots with slow-smoked chopped brisket. Even more options are available such as the flatbread pizzas, which come with a garlic butter base and an extra helping of shredded mozzarella. The BBQ flatbread combines the best of both worlds by topping the pizza with pulled pork or chopped brisket, while the sausage and garlic pesto flatbread comes with a pesto base, sausages and sun-dried tomatoes. And the Flammkuchen German onion pie provides the most exciting flavors yet with creme fraiche and smoked bacon lardons. “We wanted to provide an atmosphere where our guests can feel comfortable staying a while and making friends — all while enjoying our beer and food offerings,” Shawn says.

SOUTHLAKE SAMARITANS Meet Some of Southlake’s Community Leaders

S

ince Southlake Town Square broke ground in the late ’90s, Southlake’s population has doubled, filling the plains with master-built communities and catapulting Carroll ISD to 6A status. The community has collectively continued to grow, and along the way, cherished traditions have been adopted, different perspectives shared and new relationships cultivated. Today’s Southlake belongs to an ever-growing group of people from different backgrounds and beliefs. New neighbors may not know what to expect from each other at first, but whether they’ve moved from the coasts, came from overseas or have been firmly entrenched here for generations, one thing is certain — Southlake is a special community that embraces each other’s differences and comes together like no other. The city leaders, educators and volunteers in the following pages take that community spirit to heart as they pay it forward in both big and small ways, making every resident feel seen and valued. Let's face it — when we’re all working together, it makes for a stronger, more unified Southlake.

KUSH RAO

SOUTHLAKE FOUNDATION PRESIDENT Kush Rao and his family moved to Southlake in 2015 because of the award-winning schools and attractive city amenities. But what made him stay was the people. After organizing a small community celebration of Diwali in his neighborhood, Kush launched a large-scale festival in 2018 that attracted over 2,000 attendants. “We wanted to showcase our culture — share who we are with the town,” Kush says. “We brought our idea to [city] council, and we got the go-ahead to hold it in town square. We didn’t know how the city was going to react, but they welcomed us with open arms.” And he didn’t stop there. In 2019, he founded the Southlake Foundation and spearheaded even more local initiatives, including Celebrate Southlake, the United We Run color marathon and candidate forums during every election cycle. He even helps organize appreciation lunches for city and school staff to thank them for everything they do. “I want to give visibility to these people — to make sure everyone in the community feels seen, heard and recognized,” Kush says. “There’s so much positivity in this town. I’m just trying to share it.”

Starting as a second-grade teacher at Carroll Elementary, she rose through the ranks until she assumed her current role as Old Union Elementary’s assistant principal. Old Union has thrived under her leadership, being named one of the best elementary schools in the state by “U.S. News & World Report.” Reigan herself was also previously recognized as the Region 11 Assistant Principal of the Year by the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association. Whether she’s helping a student one-onone or working on big-picture projects for the school, Reigan always has Old Union’s kids at the forefront of her mind. “I love being in education,” Reigan says. “Every single day, educators make a difference in someone’s life, which goes far beyond knowledge.”

HARRIET & MILLIE DINO DEEDS

Kicking off in January 2021, dinosaur duo Harriet and Millie run around town helping others and highlighting good deeds — all while anonymously dressed up in T-rex costumes. Averaging around a deed or two a week, some of Harriet and Millie’s good deeds have included donating food to police and fire departments in Southlake, Grapevine and Colleyville, hiding Easter eggs in local parks, serving as elementary school crossing guards, ringing bells for the Salvation Army and doing random acts of kindness. Working to turn Dino Deeds into a 501(c)3 organization, Harriet and Millie have no intention of slowing down their efforts to give back. “Everybody says it makes their day,” Harriet says. “But it makes our day probably way more than they even realize.”

CARROLL ISD BUS DRIVER Even in retirement, Larry Hughes remains dedicated to the kids of Carroll ISD. Coaching the Carroll baseball team for 20 years, Larry has seen the district grow from 4A to 6A status. Following in the footsteps of Bob Ledbetter and many other CISD educators in the early days, Larry drove a bus on top of his coaching and teaching duties. He keeps at it even after his retirement, driving kids around early every morning and late afternoon. He also drives around delivering meals with his wife for Metroport Meals On Wheels. But Carroll is still home to him, just like it was during his baseball days. “I love it,” Larry says. “I love being around kids. After retiring, I love still having a connection with Carroll.”

home STYLE Westin Wonders

A

fter hosting its grand opening last fall, the Westin Dallas Southlake has quickly become one of the biggest attractions in the area. From its heavenly hotel suites to its aptlynamed Curve Lounge, guests who visit may feel inspired to replicate some of its design elements for their own space. If you’re interested in bringing a little bit of the Westin home with you, here are a few ways to get you started.

BIOPHILIC BENEFITS

According to studio director Karen Prigmore, the Westin’s design is rooted in a biophilic approach, which connects occupants to nature and the environment. The interior has massive vaulted ceilings reminiscent of Texas’ blue sky, with origami birds hanging at the top that further add to the aesthetic. Bright neutral backdrops accentuate the green and oak accents throughout the hotel. And the open-air concept gives a holistic breathability throughout the space that feels calming and revitalizing. You can add biophilic elements to your own home by maximizing natural lighting, adding more green and emulating natural shapes.

CIRCULAR REFERENCE

When guests aren’t soaking up the hotel’s atmosphere, they’re sipping on a cocktail in the Curve Lounge. This circular lounge emphasizes the annular design that remains consistent throughout the hotel. Whether it’s the circular stairs leading down to the lounge, the circular rugs in the lobby or the circular artwork that flows throughout, these round patterns help the hotel feel more connected, and they can do the same for your home as well.

STRENGTH AND SUBSTANCE

Besides its cues to nature and symmetrical patterns, the Westin also places an emphasis on using hot-rolled steel throughout the property. Whether it’s with stunning steel sculptures or metallic panels and screens lining the hotel, steel is an important part of both the Westin’s foundation and decoration. While it may be harder to line out your home with industrial-grade steel work, you can use similar metallic colors and shades to capture the spirit of the Westin.
