No News? I’d Rather Good News. In a world where it is the thought that counts, why is it negative thoughts get the airwaves, the column inches and the social shares? Even old school word of mouth seems all too often reserved for complaints, not so humble opinions and unsubstantiated whispers of gossip. Those looking for a bit of positivity are often left in the lurch, clinging to the adage, “no news is good news.” How jaded have we become where a lack of complaints could be misconstrued as good news? Good deeds should not remain in the shadows waiting for a day where tragedy was in too short of a supply to fill the allotted time slot, column width or daily blog post. Why not pass a compliment instead of passing judgment? How about passing some positivity instead of passing the buck? We have the power to fill the day with something more than complacency, and this month we are excited to share some good news with all of our readers. In the ultimate act of kindness on Southlake Boulevard just weeks ago, Aaron Kreag put himself in harms way to help a person in distress. We sat down with this local hero to get to know him better and to better understand what it takes to put other’s safety ahead of your own. In another positive turn of events, Melissa Page has been spreading smiles and joy for over 20 years as the director of the Emerald Belles. Through her latest venture as a fitness entrepreneur, she’s choreographed her contagious optimism into a second act that is sure to leave you breathless. And, despite what you’ve heard, the state of Colorado is spreading more than high times. Thanks to the Denver-based Random Acts of Kindness Foundation, the state is also a greenhouse for good vibes through its national Random Acts of Kindness Week starting this Feb. 9. There’s still time to make plans for what could be a momentous week, and in this month’s issue, we aim to inspire you into action.

SCARY CLOSE DONALD MILLER FEBRUARY 3 Building Relationships In the age of social media friend lists reaching the 400-500 range, some may think we focus too much on the quantity of relationships rather than the quality of them. In his new book, Scary Close, author Donald Miller explores choosing to impress fewer people and connect with more as a means to finding meaningful relationships with friends, family and coworkers. The Nashville resident is the author of several books including Blue Like Jazz.

CISD RECOGNIZED AS A TOP PERFORMING DISTRICT ON NICHE.COM Carroll ISD received an A+ on the Niche.com report card—ranking second in Texas. (Eanes ISD in Austin ranked first.) The “grade” is compiled from a variety of sources that include student, parent and resident surveys, school administrators and government databases. “There truly are many different ways you can evaluate a school district, but we are thrilled to see how well our district did on Niche. com,” says CISD Superintendent Dr. David Faltys. “It’s especially great to hear that our community is pleased with the school district and the education we are providing their children.” The site also noted that 99 percent of students in CISD are considered proficient in math and/or reading. Compare this to the state average of 83.3 percent for math and 88.4 percent for reading. “Our teachers do a great job of identifying student needs and helping individual students reach their full potential,” Dr. Faltys says. “Every child comes to us with a different set of needs and different learning styles, and it’s very satisfying to see our students put what they have learned into practice by excelling on state and national assessments.”

NEW TOURISM BRANDING CAMPAIGN UNDERWAY IN SOUTHLAKE Over the past four years, the city of Southlake has developed a new tourism branding campaign working with Cubic, Inc., a Tulsa advertising agency that has helped the city research and develop a strategy. “This process stems from the Southlake 2030 Economic Development and Tourism Master Plan which was adopted by council in 2011,” says Southlake’s tourism marketing manager Jill Lind. “One of the top recommendations is Goal T3-Development of a Focused Message. That was the launching point for the process. We worked with Cubic Creative to conduct the fieldwork and analysis to create our full destination brand.” According to Lind, shopping, dining, world class sports facilities and social/corporate event markets have been identified as the top reasons to visit Southlake, and now that the branding campaign has been announced, the city will be working on implementing the brand in various mediums—ads, websites and other collateral. “I think people will be excited with what we deliver over the next several months as we implement the Southlake 2030 Master Plan and how it comes to life."

2ND ANNUAL STAYING ALIVE! OPEN HOUSE TAKES PLACE IN SOUTHLAKE The American Heart Association (AHA) through the Go Red for Women campaign—nationally sponsored by Macy’s—want you to know that 1 in 3 women die of heart disease and stroke. But it can be prevented through education. On the local level, Texas Health Resources, Baylor Regional Medical Center Grapevine, Spine Team Texas, Professional Caretakers and Providence Bank are sponsoring the 2nd Annual Staying Alive! open house event in Southlake. Join your fellow health-conscious neighbors and friends for this family-friendly event featuring fun activities and informational sessions, along with free Hands-Only CPR training at the DPS North Training Facility, 100 East Dove Rd., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Last year’s event was a huge success. More than 170 adults and youth received Hands-Only CPR training from Southlake DPS and employees of Texas Health Southlake. In addition, approximately $8,000 was raised for AHA through corporate sponsorships and private contributions at the event.

PHASE II OF THE MARQ WILL REQUIRE A VOTE Phase I construction of The Marq, Southlake’s community recreation center, is right on schedule, according to Director of Community Services Chris Tribble. The grand opening of Phase I is expected to take place late 2015. Phase I includes the Aria outdoor amphitheater, an events hall with a seating capacity of 300 and a senior center. This phase has a total cost of $15.1 million, but has already been funded through the city’s existing savings. However, Phase II, which includes spaces for fitness, indoor aquatics, performance training, a gymnasium, an indoor jog/walk track, an indoor playground and multipurpose classrooms for programs, will require a vote. According to Southlake Mayor John Terrell, the city has already established a funding solution for residents to vote on. Phase II, expected to cost $31.8 million, is “contingent on the outcome of an election where the voters will be asked to repurpose a portion of the current Crime Control and Prevention District (CCPD) sales tax to fund construction,” according to the city. Southlake residents will go to the polls in May 2015 to vote on the fund’s new allotment proposal.

STATE RESCHEDULES MATH STAAR TESTING DATE The Texas Education Agency announced that 5th and 8th grade mathematics STAAR tests were rescheduled to April 20, 2015. The change was made to allow 5th and 8th grade students three additional weeks to learn the new mathematics standards. The 5th and 8th grade assessments are typically given at the end of March or beginning of April to allow for student retesting. Because of the new standards, no retests will be required this year. The change was made based on teacher, administrator and parent input from around the state, including Carroll ISD, to the State Board of Education. The Carroll ISD mathematics department will meet with teachers in January to adjust pacing of the curriculum. “This change is positive for the students of Carroll ISD, because it allows additional time to master the required standards,” says Jaclyn Hemmila, Carroll ISD secondary mathematics coordinator.

SOUTHLAKE INSTALLS NEW TRAFFIC SIGNS TO AVOID CONFUSION The city’s Office of Traffic Management has installed "Right on Red Yields to U-Turn" signs at the north and south side of 32 intersections along Southlake Boulevard (FM 1709) after hearing concerns from citizens regarding potential accidents between those making legal U-turns and those turning right on red. Southlake residents have voiced their concerns about dangerous driving conditions in citizen surveys, mobility forums and other town meetings. This effort is part of the OTM’s mission to support better mobility within city limits. The 30-day process only closed lanes temporarily, and additionally, the installations took place during off-peak times to lessen the impact on traffic in and around the intersections. Signs were installed at the following intersections along Southlake Boulevard: Nolen Drive, Kimball Avenue, Home Goods Driveway, Village Center, Carroll Avenue, Tower Boulevard, Byron Nelson Parkway, White Chapel Boulevard, Timber Lakes Drive, Southridge Lakes Parkway, Peytonville Avenue, Player’s Circle/Meadowlark, FM 1938, Brock Drive, Watermere Drive, opening west of Watermere Drive and Pearson Lane.

WATER RATE TO INCREASE FOR SOUTHLAKE RESIDENTS IN 2015 Southlake residents will see an increase in their water rates this year. The City of Fort Worth has increased wholesale water charges for the second year in a row, and representatives of the Tarrant Regional Water District and the City of Fort Worth Water Department have indicated that a continuation of this trend should be expected. The rate increase is related to not only the drought but also the increased demand and use of water resources. The impact on Southlake customers will be a 7.825 percent pass through increase to their water rates. This means an average residential consumer with a 1" water meter will experience approximately a $9.71 monthly increase. The same size meter for an average commercial consumer will reflect about $13.16 added to the monthly bill. Exact consumption will determine the dollar amount of the increase.

CISD HIRES FIRM TO ASSIST IN ATHLETIC DIRECTOR SEARCH Carroll school officials hired Champions Consulting & Search Firm to handle the recruitment, application and screening process for CISD’s next athletic director. Since 2002, Champions Search Firm has placed many successful athletic directors and/or head football coaches, in positions at small and large schools, districts and colleges throughout Texas and the southwest. They have conducted AD searches in Rockwall, Birdville, Grapevine-Colleyville and San Angelo ISDs. “We believe the contacts and expertise that Champions brings to this process will benefit Carroll ISD,” says Superintendent Dr. David Faltys.

SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

community

“Our goal is to hire the best athletic director out there, and we believe partnering with Champions in this process is a step in the right direction.” The Champions staff will recruit candidates, accept and screen applications, and turn over a list of finalists to a Carroll ISD AD interview committee led by Dr. JJ Villarreal, Assistant Superintendent for Student Services. The committee will be made up of representative employees and parents, including several head coaches, athletic booster members and CISD administrators. After interviewing the top finalists, the committee will make a recommendation to Dr. Faltys who will then make a final recommendation to the CISD Board of Trustees. Notable past athletic directors include Bob Ledbetter. Inducted into the Carroll ISD Athletic Department Athletic Hall of Honor in 2011, Ledbetter arrived at Carroll ISD as head football coach for the Dragons in 1979 and drastically changed the culture over the next 17 years. During that time, the Dragons won three Class 3A state championships, 181 games and owned a 72-game regular season win streak. Ledbetter left the sidelines in 1996 to become Carroll’s athletic director, and in 2010, he was inducted into the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor.

The promotion, offered by the Fort Worth-based company, will present the opportunity for AAdvantage and Dividend Miles members to earn more miles based on the distance flown, the fare purchased and the member’s elite status level. “As the largest airline in the world, with a global network that spans 54 countries, our frequent flyer program must also be the best in the business," says Suzanne Rubin, president of the AAdvantage Loyalty Program. "A mile flown continues to be a mile earned in AAdvantage.” Beginning Jan. 1, American will reward customers that are members of either the AAdvantage or Dividend Miles programs with bonus miles for purchased first or business class tickets on all eligible flights marketed or operated by American or US Airways. The promotion applies to any AAdvantage member, elite status or not, according to spokesperson Laura Nedbal. The bonus miles, which were not available in 2014, are earned on top of regular miles earned through the normal program. The promotion applies to all travel between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2015.

Q&A SESSION

TIPS FOR A BETTER TUMMY A Q&A with Dr. Michael Vennemeyer With New Year’s resolutions at full steam, we spoke with Southlake plastic surgeon and author Dr. Michael Vennemeyer for tips on getting our midsections ready for pool season. His book, “Plastic Surgery Myths Dispelled: A Consumer’s Guide” is an educational resource for anyone considering cosmetic plastic surgery.

Q: What is the biggest misconception about getting a great tummy? A: The biggest misconception is that working out a lot is the most important ingredient in achieving a good-looking core. I’m not saying that exercise is unimportant. It’s just not the primary factor—nutrition is. If you work out constantly but eat garbage, your results will be limited.

Q: How does extra hip fat affect the tummy area and what can be done? A: Extra fat in this area makes women look high-waisted and squareshaped. We can target your core with liposuction, creating a more hourglass taper and lowering the waistline. The obvious benefits are visible from the front, but an added bonus is a more youthful appearing back side. My patients are always pleasantly surprised when hip lipo makes their butt look smaller and better.

Q: How can plastic surgery help your tummy after pregnancy? A: So many women struggle to get a flat tummy after having babies. They seem so relieved when I help them understand why 1000 sit-ups a day will not make their abdominal bulge and loose skin go away, because stretched skin and connective tissue is to blame. A tummy tuck removes loose skin and repairs the separated muscles, flattening your tummy. I put the scars really low so my patients can wear a two-piece—you should be able to show it off if you want!

Q: What is the best nutritional approach for great abs? A: What is good for the tummy is good for the whole body. The enlightened view is that everything we put in our bodies can be a medicine or a poison. Most of the processed, refined-carbohydrate-laden foods we eat are inflammatory and make us fat. We’ve been brainwashed by the food and diet industry to believe that restricting calories will give us the body we want. The reality is what we eat matters more than how much. If you want to learn how your food can make you look better and live longer read the book “Eat to Live” by Dr. Joel Fuhrman. It’s based on scientific studies, not diet fads. This book completely changed the way my wife and I eat.

Q: Can good nutrition erase the need for tweaking your tummy with plastic surgery? A: If you get the body you want from healthy living you are all set. Unfortunately, weight loss, pregnancy and resistant fat pockets hold many of us back. For example, normal weight women often seek help for their “muffin top” from extra fat in the hip area. Plastic surgery can really help if you are stuck in this situation.

REAL PATIENTS. REAL STORIES.

When our two boys joined the family, so did Baylor.

Christian Reynolds and her husband Jacob were expecting twins. What they weren’t expecting was to add a dozen Baylor staff members to their family circle. But when their twins arrived three months early at less than three pounds each, the newborns received specialized treatment at the Baylor Regional Medical Center at Grapevine Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Over the next 11 weeks, the Reynolds developed a lasting friendship with the infants’ caregivers. “The NICU was like our home away from home,” says Christian. “They’re our heroes and part of our family.”

Second Act for Melissa Page JETE FROM DRILL TEAM TO BOUTIQUE FITNESS By Gina Tagliarino

F

or some, fitness is a way of life. For Southlake residents Melissa and Mark Page, it was the beginning of their destiny. “I actually met my husband at the gym on a treadmill,” Melissa reveals. “Now that they're married, fitness has always been incorporated at our house and we keep each other motivated, so it makes it fun for us.” Melissa’s dedicated spirit emerged well before her chance encounter with her future husband. The Carroll High School Emerald Belles drill team director has been dancing since the tender age of 3, when her mom first enrolled her in a class. She hasn’t stopped since. “By the time I entered college, I knew I wanted to be a teacher and to keep dancing,” Melissa says. “Being a drill team director seemed to be the perfect fit.” So she began her journey as a dance coach, first at Brenham High School and later at Blinn College in Brenham before taking reign of the award-winning Emerald Belles in 1997.

Since then, the drill team has won multiple state titles, and even recently took home first place overall in a national competition—all under the guidance of Melissa. But this story has a new chapter to be written, as Melissa and her husband set out on a business endeavor that’s a little dance, a little cycling and a whole lot of fun. It’s called ZYN22, and it’ll leave you breathless in more ways than one. “It’s an experience, not just an exercise class,” Melissa explains. Though she and Mark have always been self-proclaimed fitness fanatics, it wasn’t until early 2014 that they even considered turning their passion for sport into a profitable business that will soon include four locations, including Southlake. “A friend of mine told me about this concept that was popular in L.A. and New York, and it just got to me in a way that wouldn’t let me go,” Mark says. “After three or four weeks of being up at night thinking about it and researching it, I knew I had to go experience it.” One trip to Los Angeles to try it out for himself, and he instantly was hooked. But Melissa wasn’t so easily convinced. The lifelong dancer shied away from gym-style group classes because she simply didn’t find them interesting or fun. In fact, it would take three to four more months before she approached her husband one evening with the green light. “I never even knew you could do all this stuff on a bike,” Melissa says. “I was very hesitant to begin with because I couldn’t stand cycling.” Once she considered all she could bring to the table through her experience as a dance instructor and her network of talented former drill team stars, Melissa was all in. “I knew early on I could help with my background and deep contacts in the dance world,” Melissa recalls. “I definitely have learned not to say or think something cannot be done.” Soon, she and Mark began crafting a business plan alongside Mark’s childhood friend Johnny Pannell and his wife, Karen, who also reside in Southlake. “Within 24 hours we had made a deal for Johnny to become the CEO of the company,” Mark says, “and he’s been in charge ever since and done a phenomenal job.”

FEB 15 • 33

By May 2014 Melissa and Mark were ready to turn their dream into a reality. Understanding the success of boutique fitness concepts like Crossfit and Barre, they begin doing their homework to pull together the best aspects of them all. The result was ZYN22, an entirely new model unlike any other fitness class in this part of the country. And the best part was Melissa could reconnect with some of her former Emerald Belles, utilizing their skills to create a troupe of instructors that mirrored the company vision. “It’s interesting because some of the best instructors in this method have dance backgrounds, which naturally led me to my Emerald Belle alumni,” Melissa says. Among those training to instruct the program are former Belles Karis Warren, Lacey Munoz, West Hardin, Jessica Kane and Berkley McFarlin, all preparing for ZYN22’s Fort Worth location. Others are joining as instructors at additional locations or as staff members at its on-site boutique stores, which will feature the latest workout attire to browse before and after sessions. “It’s been great, because as I’ve gone through the instructor training, it’s been fun to work so closely with them in a different capacity,” Melissa notes. “This time last year, Lacey Munoz was my captain as a senior in high school. Now, we are training together.” In addition to her former Belles, Melissa has also been able to explore a new type of relationship with her husband as a business partner. “It's been interesting, to say the least,” Melissa says. “We're both used to being in charge, so both of us are relearning to take direction.” And as opposites attract in romantic relationships, Melissa has discovered this dynamic clash of personalities also creates successful business partnerships. “Mark thinks differently than I do,” Melissa explains. “I see all the details that need to happen for something to get done. Mark is the total opposite—the big picture person with his eye focused way down the path that no one else sees.” With a smile she admitted the duo balances each other out quite well. “We are a good complement to each other though—he needs me!” But while her background as a drill team coach has prepared her in some ways for starting a new business, Melissa has quickly realized entrepreneurship isn’t necessarily a clearcut process. “I am a very organized person, and it bothers me to let things build up or linger,” Melissa says. “Being an entrepreneur is way different, and I have had to learn that things may feel unorganized, cluttered and even chaotic at times. But with hard work and determination everything comes together, and it is a very rewarding experience. It's just the nature of new ventures, and feeling ‘messy’ is okay.” As things start to come together for ZYN22, the socalled messiness is part of the magic. Blending cycling, dancing, motivation and meditation, the fitness concept

34 • FEB 15

could be having an identity crisis, but instead the mix creates a one-of-a-kind adrenaline rush that can be enjoyed by any fitness level or age. “You can sit down when you need to sit down,” Melissa says. “You can turn it down when you need to turn it down. It’s all about the experience of it and the music. We all can relate to music, whether you can dance or not. Music touches us all.” It’s this sense of community, attention to mental health and encouraging atmosphere that served as the framework for the eventual brand name, messaging and colors, which Fort Worth-based ad agency Balcolm Agency helped develop. “There’s a ‘Y’ in the middle of ‘ZYN’ for a reason,” Mark notes. “It’s about finding your ‘why,’ the reason why you’re here and why you want to be better. We set out to give the word ‘Zen’ a new meaning and to make it something actionable.” The number 22 was later added based on the company’s motto—“They say it takes 21 days to form a habit. Discover what happens on day 22.” Bright green, white and cobalt blue were selected as the company’s brand colors, a nod to the energetic tone it aims to evoke. So what can you expect during your first ZYN22 class? Expect to be wowed. Every detail has been considered, including how guests will interact with one another before and after their scheduled class time. “It’s going to be like a Disneyland ride,” Mark says. “Every bike has a speaker coming toward it, so everyone has the same experience.” What Melissa and Mark want to set ZYN22 apart from the rest is the “feel good” notion you’ll leave with. As an instructor, Melissa has the unique opportunity to be an inspiration for her class by encouraging them throughout their session and beyond. “Once you step inside that dome, it’s time to drop everything and have your own time to work out,” Melissa says. “No matter if you have a dance background or not, you can have a sense of community with others when the music comes on. “It may sound corny that we're changing lives, but it's not to me. As an owner and an instructor delivering the message from the podium, I'm excited about the hope, peace and motivation people will experience by riding with us.” As Melissa reflects on the path that has led them to building ZYN22, she can’t help but see the parallels between her life as a drill team director and her new adventure as a small business owner. “It has been harder and more challenging than I thought, but in the end that’s where the good stuff is,” she says. “Just like I’ve experienced with the Belles—it’s that big vision, hard work and some personal risk combined that brings great rewards.”

“It’s interesting because some of the best instructors in this method have dance backgrounds, which naturally led me to my Emerald Belle alumni.” —Melissa

EVERYDAY CITIZEN Aaron Kreag

Southlake Style catches up with this courageous civilian after a widely publized scene played out on the streets of Southlake late last year. By Amy Reisner Photo by BlueDoor Studios

38 • FEB 15

While stopped at a red light in Southlake, something caught Aaron Kreag's attention. A man was assaulting his female passenger in the car next to them. Aaron’s wife called 911 as Aaron exited the car and yelled for the man to stop. When the man stepped outside the car Aaron drew his .45 caliber gun and held the man at gunpoint until police arrived to secure the scene.

How do you remember the scene that day?

But yet, for all intents and purposes, you are a civilian now. What made you stop that day?

It was so mind-blowing. I drive through town everyday to and from work. We shop in Southlake; we eat in Southlake. That day we were stopped on a sixlane road 50 yards from the busiest intersection in town, and we see a man brutally attacking his female passenger. I have never seen anything like it before. I’ve seen couples shouting, or seen shoving matches in department stores between people. In those cases I might intervene and tell them to “calm down.” I will mitigate—but not with a firearm.

When I was younger, about 16 years old, I saw something happen to someone, and all I could do was go to a payphone and call 911. My assumption was that I saw a lady kidnapped. I think that incident planted a seed with me. Life is too short, and I’ve got too strong of a conscience. I choose to live my life without regret. My wife and I agreed that this guy could potentially kill this lady. There was no fathomable way I could see what I saw, do nothing and not immediately intervene.

You feel it is important for others to know you have military background and extensive training in firearms, why is that? Someone who doesn’t have all the information about me and the facts about the circumstances could potentially make an illegal decision, and I don’t want that. Over the last 21 years my firearms experience or credentials include eight years in the Army, three years experience as an security consultant and tactical medic in Iraq working with the State Department, civilians and the Iraqi government. Over the last 20 years I have probably logged 2,000 hours in a wide variety of training formats. Some credentials include Texas CHL and CHL Instructor, past NRA instructor and Range Safety Officer, competitive shooting experience, tactical firearms and tactical medicine instructor experience and I am Texas Department of Public Safety licensed armed security guard and Personal Protection Officer / Executive Protection.

You are no stranger to intervening. You ended up working with first responders in New York during 9/11. What was that like? After eight years in the Army I returned home to Chicago in 2011, and spent one night catching up with an old buddy from school. That was Sept. 10, 2011. The next morning when I turned on the news and saw the second tower hit I thought it was the beginning of World War III. As an Army veteran and trained medic, I packed my bags and made my way to New York. It was such a defining moment. After leaving the city, I knew I was meant to help people in this capacity.

You're no longer a paramedic, what eventually led to a career change? When I was a paramedic I really enjoyed being paid to help people. It was the best of both worlds—making a living and contributing to society. I enjoyed the ups and downs, the excitement and occasional adrenaline. The job was never boring and always changing. However, as my life changed and I started my family, it became too much of an emotional burden. I truly cared about each person I came into contact with, and the trauma—especially with the civilians and children—just got to me. I could no longer carry those emotions around with me. It’s probably safe to say your emotions are

the driving factor behind the chances you take to save lives. With that being said, when the ordeal was over, you went over to the female passenger and gave her a hug. What prompted you to do this? When it was all over, I got an overwhelming feeling that it was such a traumatic experience for the female passenger. I felt I needed to close the loop on this— connect with her in a nonaggressive way. I didn’t want to drive away and have her wonder “who is this guy” and “where is his heart.” I wanted to say “hi” and tell her I would be praying for her. To me it was closure, and I hoped for her it was closure as well.

BRINGING KINDNESS BACK Restoring faith in humanity one act at a time

Y

ou have surely experienced it—an emotional high that comes right after you’ve helped another person. Perhaps you feel better because you’ve redirected your attention away from your own problems. Perhaps, the high centers around a feeling of usefulness that even your own job can’t provide. Or perhaps, it’s just knowing that another person’s day just got a little bit better. Study after study has shown that in helping others, we also help ourselves. So no wonder so many regularly give freely of their time, their services and their money to help others who desperately need the assistance. Somehow, though, the grind of the day to day, the stress of work and anxiety about an uncertain future often distract us from what some would say is a natural-born drive to look out for everyone else.

Return to Kindness Fortunately, more than a few organizations are working fervently to remind us of how easy and important it is to bring kindness back into our daily lives. This Feb. 9 to 15, the Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Foundation based in Denver, aims to promote plentiful acts of kindness during Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Week and beyond. “We have been focusing on, ‘How do we celebrate the week, and then make it part of who we are,’” says Random Act of Kindness Foundation Vice President Brooke Jones. She advocates making seemingly random acts of kindness a deliberate and regular part of your life. “How can you infuse kindness into your life every day?” she asks. “Where in the moments of your daily life can you add kindness?” Kindness can incorporate the simplest and easiest of acts. “Maybe when you’re driving to work, it’s letting someone in front of you on the highway,” says Jones, who emphasizes that you can also make it part of your routine. “Maybe when you wake up in the morning, the first thing you do is turn off your alarm on your phone and text a positive message to a loved one, ‘I’m thinking of you, and I appreciate everything you do.’” The RAK foundation was created in 1995 to spread selfless acts around the globe. The foundation was born in San Francisco, after a year during which the city experienced a series of senseless, seemingly random acts of violence, explains Jones. A response to this period, the new organization hoped to promote random acts of kindness, a play on a familiar saying: “Practice random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty.” The phrase dates back to the early '80s, when California artist Anne Herbert reportedly scrawled it out on a place mat in a restaurant in Sausalito. Today, like in 1995, our newspaper headlines and nightly news broadcasts consist of reports on violence, terrorism and war—which should make acts of kindness seem even more vital. Of course, promoting selfless acts or volunteerism is nothing new, and countless organizations aim to promote the same kind of ethos. Perhaps it’s no wonder then that 62.2 million Americans volunteered last year, giving the equivalent of $173 million of services, according to the Corporation for National and Community Service. Perhaps you have given a few hours to feed someone else, to help raise money for a good cause or to mentor young people. Even more Americans give of their time informally every day. At least 173 million people practice kindness through watching each other’s children,

helping with shopping, housesitting and more. During Random Acts of Kindness Week, Jones advocates that we stay close to home: “It’s a matter of finding something where you can do something nice for someone else every day. Maybe by the last day, it’s become a part of your daily life. Maybe you’ve stepped it up each day, and you realize, ‘This is awesome; I should be doing this every day.’” The kind of deliberate acts of kindness we do every day caught the attention of the staff at Grapevine Relief And Community Exchange (GRACE), a Grapevine-based nonprofit relief agency which provides assistance to people struggling with a limited income or recent emergency to help them achieve self-sufficiency. “There are random acts of kindness that people do spur of the moment, but there are also deliberate acts of kindness that people set out to do,” says Shonda Schaefer, GRACE executive director. “That’s where our volunteers come from and our donors come from. That’s where our staff comes from. Whether it is random or deliberate, it all comes from a person with a good heart wanting to do something for someone in need.” The organization created Acts of Kindness (A-OK for short) cards, for the staff and select volunteers to hand out when they see a kindness performed, beginning during the period of RAK Week this year in early February. “It’s a thank you and a recognition to anyone anytime we see an act of kindness,” says Schaefer. The cards will reward the recipient with a discount at GRACE stores Graceful Buys or the Style and Grace boutique. The Helper’s High That warm glow we experience upon helping others has been thoroughly documented through scientific research that has also shown the effects of kindness to be wide reaching. Authors Allan Luks and Peggy Payne called it the Helper’s High in their book The Healing Power of Doing Good. They described it as a feeling of exhilaration and burst of energy similar to the endorphin-based euphoria experienced after intense exercise. Helping others is linked to a change in our very body chemistry that affects our mood and our health. Numerous studies have shown that kindness increases the levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that regulates mood in the brain, and reduces the stress hormone cortisol. Children who regularly offer a helping hand are happier than their counterparts. According to a study published in 2012, children ages 9 to 11 who performed acts of kindness also received the benefit increased social acceptance. We spoke with Dawson Middle School Principal Ryan Wilson about the school’s volunteer efforts and

the payoffs he sees. In addition to regular acts of charity the students are involved in, the school organizes a Helping Hands day once a year during which the students and staff alike go out to over a dozen sites throughout surrounding communities to give back. “It never fails,” he says. “Everyone gets the real point, which is especially good for 12, 13 and 14 year olds.” Wilson says that the effects of the day of service can be felt through the remainder of the school year, for students and grownups alike. “It’s a refill for the emotional tank that gets us ready for the next year. It’s absolutely wonderful and right for kids. Though it works the same for the adults.” A giving spirit could also produce health benefits, leading to a reduction in pain symptoms, lowered blood pressure and better immune function. People age 55 and over who volunteer tend to live longer than their counterparts. Soheila Phelps, Southlake senior services coordinator, thinks the benefits are self-evident for some of the members of the community who spend their time at the Southlake Senior Center. “Of course, volunteering and giving back gives them a sense of purpose,” she says. One of the senior center’s most active volunteer, Marge Kyle, agrees, “You do it because of an inner feeling inside, not for any kind of personal gain, but I certainly get more out of it than I give.” That’s to say nothing about how far reaching the benefits go. According to one study, acts of giving have a way of multiplying themselves as they spread. The recipient of the act will often then perform an act of kindness for two or more people. Then those people, in turn, do the same, and so on. Just ask Marge, who spends most of her free time performing acts of service for others. “I feel like it’s a chain reaction,” she explains. “If you make someone feel good, they are in all probability going to pass it on to someone.” Her observations have been backed up by multiple studies that also have noted that it’s not just the giver and the recipient that spread the love, so to speak. The people who simply observe the original selfless act reap similar mood balancing and psychological effects and are also more likely to perform acts of kindness themselves. This is perhaps the most surprising payoff of selflessness. When we practice acts of kindness, we are setting off a chain of selfless acts that will spread like a highly contagious disease. Of course, with symptoms like happiness, health and a sense of fulfillment, it’s an illness most people would be happy to catch.

We asked around, knowing many of our fellow Southlake citizens freely gave of their time to help others. What we found were a few tales of inspiring selflessness worthy of sharing here. A Christmas Tale of Towels This past Christmas, a former client at GRACE, literally gave back the soft and fuzzy kindness he had once freely received. The former client wishes to remain anonymous, but allowed us to tell his story here. He came to GRACE a few years ago, soon after his wife’s death left him a widower with two small children. She had been the primary breadwinner, and suddenly he had to support the family. As the holidays approached, GRACE helped him secure food, clothing and an opportunity to go Christmas shopping for presents for his children. At the end of the shopping trip, he was presented with a set of bath towels, which moved him to tears. He didn’t expect to receive anything for himself during the excursion. And while he needed new towels for his family, they were not something he even thought to request. “It’s such a minor little thing,” Shonda Schaefer, GRACE executive director says. “But when you talk about an act of kindness, you never know where that goes.” Those words came true this past Christmas, when the same client, now in a place of self-sufficiency, bought 100 sets of towels to be distributed to current GRACE clients during the holidays. “It moved him so much, that he thought others would be moved just as much,” says Schaefer. Care at the Senior Center and Beyond Southlake Senior Center member, Marge Kyle, makes selfless acts part of her everyday. “She’s always available to give a helping hand,” says Soheila Phelps, Southlake Senior Services coordinator. “She’s the first person you would ask to go for help. If there’s ever a need, she will not hesitate to lend an open hand and she will do it with an open heart.” At the Senior Center, Marge is active in several roles, including the Care committee, which looks after senior center members who are ill or in rehabilitation. She serves on the Senior Advisory Committee, chosen by the Southlake city council to advise on matters related to citizens age 55 and older. And that’s not to mention the work she does at White Chapel Church and Apex Arts League. Marge says, “I feel like I may be helping the church or the Senior Center, but the people are the highlight. I certainly get more than I give.” Full Circle with Meals on Wheels Metroport Meals on Wheels (MMOW) delivers much-needed food and friendship to people with limited ability in Southlake and surrounding communities. For volunteer driver Neil Perkins, who has made MMOW deliveries for 17 years, it all came full circle this past summer. After his wife’s shoulder surgery, MMOW provided meals for both her and Neil during her recuperation. “She was afraid for me to leave because she couldn’t do much for herself,” Perkins says. “MMOW took away that worry and the layer of responsibility of preparing meals so I could concentrate on caring for her.” Now that she is mended from her surgery, Neil is back on his route, delivering meals, companionship and an added caring touch to the area’s seniors. “I love to tease the ladies on my route and see them laugh,” Perkins says. Before he leaves for his route, Neil always stops to pick up fresh fruit to share, which brings smiles to the faces of the seniors, according to Neil. “It is a blessing to touch older folks and show compassion because so many of them don’t get that,” he says.

You don’t have to make a grand gesture or go out of your way to make kindness part of your everyday. Here are some easy actions you can take to bring more warm and fuzzies into the world. Just say cheese. Flash your pearly whites at every person you see all day long. Smile especially if you don’t feel like it. Scientific studies have shown that smiling brightens your mood. Never dine alone. Pick someone new to grab some grub with. Maybe it’s a shy classmate or a coworker who’s been going through a hard time. You never know—it could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Share the love. Make sure to tell your family members, friends and special ones that you love them at some point during the day. Make a commitment. Call up an organization you care about and volunteer. Whether it’s an hour a month or once a week, you are sure to receive as much as you give. Get out of line. Let the person behind you go first. You don’t know what the other person’s day has been like. Maybe she’s in a rush or received some bad news—your kindness can turn her day around. Say something nice. Dole out compliments to every person you see. Tell someone they did a good job on a project or that they look extra nice. Go viral. Only share positive messages on social media for a week. Make every comment a compliment. Don’t be surprised when you see your digital kindness multiplied across the entirety of the world wide web. Mind your manners. Make it a point to say “Thank You” as often as possible throughout the day. Take it a step further with an appreciative email to a coworker or a grateful text to a friend. Or go old-school with a handwritten thank you note, which most people would enjoy opening a lot more than bills and junk mail. Park far, far away. Don’t take the closest spot to the doors—leave it for someone who needs it more, like a person with limited mobility or someone who is late for an important appointment. Stand up. Give up your seat in a crowded waiting room or spot at an event to someone else. Maybe he has a hard time standing for long periods or has poor vision and needs to be closer to the stage. Give it away. Collect unwanted items around the house into a box and then sort them according to recipient. Most non-profits will appreciate office and household supplies; clothes, toiletries and packaged foods can go to a shelter; and most animal rescue organizations will be grateful for used pet toys. Just say, “Yes.” When a new project or task comes up at work, at school or at home, be the first to volunteer to complete it and do it with a good, positive attitude. Be generous with your time, and it will benefit everyone— including you! SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

Pass the buzz backward. Buy the coffee of the next person in line. And leave immediately, like a coffee bandit. You can rest assured that your act will be repeated until dozens of people are experiencing kindness (and extra morning buzzes). Clean it up. Do a household chore without being asked and keep it a secret. The best acts of kindness don’t expect recognition or a thank you. If you are looking for bonus points, make it something you rarely do, like cleaning the dishes, mopping the floor, taking out the trash or folding the laundry.

EMERGENCY? URGENT CARE?

Moms In The Know

The power of conversation. Say, “Good morning,” to everyone you see at work, or at school and start a conversation. Ask her how she is, how the weekend was or what she’s up to. Try to make a connection with as many people as possible. Positive Post-Its. Fill a pad of sticky notes with kind thoughts and quotes and place them everywhere you go during the day. On the mirror in a bathroom, on the back of a register as you check out, in the bread aisles or by the coffee pot. Your little piece of paper will start plenty of smiles. Package up some care. Bake a treat, buy a gift card or create a care package for someone who makes your life better, like a custodian, maid, IT support staff, mail carrier or garbage collector. Give 40 percent. Tip twice the amount you normally do. It may only be a couple of dollars more, but it will make both you and the recipient glow with kindness. Helping by hand. Gather up items you could give to a homeless shelter, like gift cards, blankets, new clothes, shoes, and pass them out to the homeless in person. The joy and gratitude will be contagious. Say more than, “I’m sorry.” Make amends with someone you’ve harmed. Tell them you’re sincerely regretful for your behavior, ask what you can do to make it right, and listen. Truly wanting to make the other person feel better will make it mean more than just saying, “I’m sorry.”

Bring the Coffeehouse to Your Home Miele CM6310 Fully Automatic Espresso Machine

nyone who has attempted to make their own coffeehouse style beverages at home can recount the frustration. Do-it-yourself cappuccinos and lattes always seem like a good idea, until you encounter the mess of espresso grounds and the impossibility of steamed milk. Two years ago, the design team at Miele—a German company known for home appliances made with precision—unveiled their Automatic Espresso Machine, the realization of every espresso-hound’s dreams. This home-brew machine takes care of every detail for you, from grinding the beans to pouring perfectly foamed milk. It delivers café-quality espresso, coffee, cappuccinos or lattes at the press of a button. The newest generation of Miele espresso machines, the CM6310, does not disappoint, offering a lot more than brewed coffee. This invention customizes every conceivable variable to the way you want it, from water levels to milk temperature—and remembers your preferences for the next time, with programmable settings for up to four users. It begins with your preferred style of coffee grounds. The conical grinder

can turn beans into a fine coffee—or espresso-ready powder depending on which of the five settings you choose. Or you can simply load pre-ground coffee into a separate chute if you want to use a different type of bean. The machine draws water from a spacious 60-ounce capacity tank and heats it according to the type and strength of coffee you’ve selected. A powerful 15-bar pump and the company’s patented AromaticSense system move the water through the coffee, ensuring maximum extraction of flavor. The self-cleaning milk container produces the perfect foam for your drink while an adjustable spout allows for you to fill up taller coffee mugs and glasses. Need to whip up more than one drink at a time? A neat feature called OneTouch for Two prepares two coffee drinks simultaneously with one touch of a button. On top of the machine, a cup warmer has space for six mugs. Several parts of the machine are dishwasher safe, and the interior components are removable to make sure keeping your Miele clean is a breeze.

hat happens when the creators of Comedy Central’s South Park pen a Broadway musical? It becomes a smash hit, of course. In Book of Mormon, Trey Parker and Matt Stone tell the story of two mismatched Mormon missionaries sent to a remote village in Uganda to spread the good word. But we don’t know who’s more skeptical, the missionaries—knowing their knowledge of the scriptures is severely lacking—or the locals. Naturally, the missionaries make a few missteps on their journey off enlightenment. Oscarwinning composer of Frozen, Robert Lopez joined forces with Parker and Stone to create the original story, music and lyrics. Book of Mormon offers a refreshing religious satire that’s as funny as it is outra-

geously obnoxious, which makes it all the more entertaining, and possibly all the more inappropriate. It should come as no surprise that the Book of Mormon production contains explicit language. Boasting nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score, Book of Mormon—now with standing room only productions in London, on Broadway and across North America—has become an international sensation since its debut in 2011. See for yourself why The New York Times has hailed it “the best musical of this century” when it takes the stage at the Winspear Opera House Feb. 10 to 22. We don’t want to give any spoilers away, but when you laugh so hard you cry, just remember we told you so.

ake plans to take your significant other on a romantic vacation to explore ancient cultures while sailing in a luxurious river cruise ship on the other side of the world. But we aren’t talking about the Danube. Let your sweetie know your next romantic getaway will involve cruising down the river Indiana Jones style—sans the Ark’s wrath. A growing trend for the upcoming year involves traveling to exotic locales nowhere near an airport—or travelable road for that matter—and a far cry from anything that even resembles a hostel. The cruise industry found a way to combine the convenience of river transportation to these hard to access ports of call with the luxury of a hotel. Embarkation for these types of cruises can’t take place around the North American coast. You’ll have to fly to the cities closest to the river and area you’ll be exploring. Add this to the cost of the cruise, and you’ll easily find yourself spending thousands of dollars. However, most of the river cruises, like their oceanic cousins, are all inclusive. Despite the higher costs of a bucket list trip such as this, food, shore excursions and sometimes even flights taken during the trip are included—just not the ones that get you home. We’re sure your significant other will enjoy the exotic river locations, and ancient history while sipping wine from a cozy observation deck by a warm fire.

Foodie Fellows, I’d like to present a new dining destination to add to your list of favorites: Stock & Barrel in Oak Cliff’s Bishop Arts District. It’s chef Jon Stevens first solo venture following his successful stint at Nosh Euro Bistro. Making other other high-profile stops in the Dallas dining world along the way (The Mercury, Aurora, Mignon and Neighborhood Services), chef Stevens was working on what would become Stock & Barrel while serving as the chef consultant for Mesero Miguel (which we reviewed in our April 2014 issue) owned by his mentor, Mico Rodriguez. The restaurant faces Davis Street, and its dark steel and glass façade glows with interior light hinting that something special lies behind the imposing raw steel door. After you walk in and your eyes adjust to the dim lighting, you see the bustling open kitchen to the right and pinpoint lighting above the tables. To your left you’ll notice a wall lined with booths set below mirrors backlit with LED lights. Located in the back, the bar area leads out to an enclosed patio. The look is industrial chic without the cold, sterile feel often associated with such spaces.

Chef Stevens has staffed his team with restaurant industry veterans who have experience stretching from New York’s famed Gramercy Tavern to the West Coast and even all the way to Europe. Chef Stevens’ menu consists of simple, pared-down recipes with each dish focused on a centerpiece ingredient, inventive preparations and beautiful presentation. You will likely see him in the kitchen, walking the floor or taking a break at the bar. From the menu’s Share section, we ordered the crushed avocado toast, comprised of crushed avocado with crisped Spanish chorizo drizzled with a balsamic reduction. I only wish there would have been more on the plate! From the Vegetables section we selected the caramelized Brussels sprouts, truffled spaetzle and cheese, and the roasted butternut squash hot pot. The winners of this round were the Brussels sprouts and the butternut squash. The truffled spaetzle and cheese, a variation on mac and cheese, was good, but the other two dishes overshadowed it. The Brussels sprouts are flash fried and tossed with cilantro, scallions and a sweet chili sauce.

The hot pot contains tender cubed butternut squash with pear in a creamy béchamel sauce topped with brie and bacon. We devoured this side dish and highly recommend it. From the wood grill we selected the most popular item, the wagyu meatloaf served over an onion and potato hash with bits of smoked bacon. This isn’t your mother’s meatloaf—it is tender, flavorful and cooked perfectly. We have also had the wagyu brisket burger, and while it is a solid choice, the meatloaf is the better of the two. We finished off the meal with what I believe is the best version of a bread pudding I have ever experienced. Pastry chef Tom Yuengling uses croissants to create this surprisingly delicate dish, which gives it a lighter. more buttery texture. It is served with a topping of butter caramel ice cream and salted English toffee. Start to finish, Stock & Barrel offered the most complete and impressive dining experience I have had in the DFW area in the last year. The staff is passionate and knowledgeable, and contributed to an amazing night out.

On our recent visit to the newly renovated restaurant, we enjoyed not just the enlarged space for customers inside, but also an expanded parking lot and an added patio. We entered the cafeteria-style line and ordered meat by the plate, which is also available on a sandwich or by the pound. We then chose our sides—favorites include mac and cheese and green beans. Condiments such as pickles, onions, peppers and sauces are complimentary, which allows you to get as little or as much as you want. (I choose two servings of the mild BBQ sauce.) As you make your way down the line, don’t forget the hot dinner rolls. After hearing about the restaurant’s humble beginnings—and tasting its food—we could easily see how Feedstore BBQ rose to fame. The story of Feedstore BBQ began when restaurant owner and operator William Lafavers bought the Southlake Feedstore in 1997— an actual feed store at the time—with plans for a restaurant. The feed store had served the needs of the once rural community, but as homes were built and communities began to grow, a new population needed tasty grub—people. And Lafavers began serving food at Feedstore BBQ in 2001.
Instantly a hit with the locals, and soon to be considered a culinary experience worth travelling for, the BBQ emerging from of the kitchen at Feedstore was often described by customers as “perfect.” Those were pretty tall boots to continue to fill year after year, but Bill Lafavers managed to do so for the next 13 years. At which point, he realized he was going to need more space to accommodate his stillgrowing customer base. Last year was a year of growth for Lafavers—both in Southlake and in surrounding communities. Plans for expansion and an addition to the Southlake location were approved by the city at the beginning of the year and completed in December. Also big news for 2014, Bill Lafavers’ son Matt headed to Keller to open up a new Feedstore BBQ location in September, while Bill’s other son Mike stayed in Southlake to manage the Feedstore location here.

Chuy on This Austin Tex-Mex favorite comes to Southlake

Big As Yo' Face Steak Burrito

Photos courtesy of Chuy's

Velvet paintings of Stevie Wonder and Elvis graced the walls of the first Chuy’s way back in 1982 when founders Mike Young and John Zapp turned a BBQ joint in Barton Springs (near Austin) into a Mexican food restaurant. The great thing about Chuy’s eclectic atmosphere is that you may not find those Stevie Wonder and Elvis masterpieces in every location. Their motto, “If you’ve seen one Chuy’s, you’ve seen one Chuy’s,” holds true for the new Southlake location, as well. Sure, the Southlake Chuy’s that recently opened in Carroll Pointe has a few pieces of the restaurant’s standard décor like the nacho car, but this Chuy’s has an Elvis shrine—complete with a velvet Elvis painting paying homage to the original location, an entryway covered in vintage cameras, and hidden objects. Although we enjoyed our extended dinner stay, we couldn’t find many of the 24 miniature baby dolls hidden throughout the restaurant. We wish you luck though! Aside from the unique atmosphere, Chuy’s is known for their authentic, affordable Tex-Mex fare—dishes are made to order from fresh ingredients. The Big As Yo' Face Steak Burrito was plenty of food for dinner and enough to take for lunch the next day. It’s a homemade, 12" flour tortilla stuffed with refried beans, cheese and, in my case, seasoned ground sirloin. When ordering most dishes at Chuy’s you can choose from seven sauces. The ranchero vegetarian red sauce is made from roasted tomatoes, cilantro, onions, bell peppers and spices. This is considered mild, but to spice things up a bit, you can opt for the Hatch green chile sauce. The burrito is also served with your choice of Mexican rice or green chile rice. If chicken is your go-to Mexican favorite, try Chuy’s Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. Made with freshly roasted, hand-pulled chicken and cheese with Boom Boom sauce. The sauce is made with cheese, roasted New Mexican green chiles, tomatillos, green onions, cilantro and lime juice, you’re sure to experience pure palate pleasure. Chuy’s is also known for their famous margaritas with flavors and recipes alternating throughout the year. But you have the opportunity to enjoy their famous house margarita year round and a perfect happy hour during which to enjoy it. The restaurant is an Austin staple Southlake residents can now enjoy. Come for the food and stay for the fun—or vice versa.

t’s hard to deny the rugged, good looks of a Jeep. More than 70 years of legendary off-road nostalgia of the Jeep Wrangler has reached new levels of cool thanks to Kevlar coatings and a Lego-like compatibility with an endless array of after-market accessories. The popularity is paying off for parent company Fiat Chrysler. For the fifth consecutive year, Jeep sales have increased both globally and in the United States, surpassing one million vehicles sold in 2014. Jeep aims to continue the momentum with the 2015 Jeep Renegade, its first ever entry into the expanding small sport-utility segment. Staying true to the adventurous lifestyle and 4x4 capability Jeep is known for, the Renegade looks to outduel the Kia Soul and Nissan Juke in the everexpanding compact SUV market. Jeep looks to gain traction with the selfie-set by delivering a unique combination of off-road capability, open-air freedom, and, thanks to its production facilities in Italy, a bit of European styling and fuel economy never seen before. Built upon the Fiat 500L platform and leveraging 4x4 technology from the all-new Jeep Cherokee, the Renegade enlists what they call Jeep Active Drive. This intelligent system, which has specific modes for snow,

sand and mud, can instantly provide up to 1,475 lb.-ft. of torque to the rear wheels for optimal grip as needed. Economy is also at the forefront as the Renegade features the segment’s first disconnecting rear axle for enhanced fuel economy nearing 30 mpg on the highway. Renegade designers made sure to enlist the timeless Jeep style with a traditional seven-slot grille. Set in black, the grille and trim give it a bit of menace, and the inset Xs in the taillights resemble Army jerrycans—an obvious nod to the military heritage of the brand. Available in a palette similar to the Wrangler— the Renegade comes in ten different colors including Omaha Orange, Sierra Blue and Colorado Red (above). Bold in design and color, the smallest member of the 2015 Jeep lineup also sizes up nicely when it comes to technology. It will offer many of the same features found on more established models including Jeep’s Uconnect hands-free communication and infotainment system, a 6.5-inch touchscreen and rearview camera. Peering up at Reunion Tower, drivers will quickly realize what really makes this mini-Wrangler a keeper is the open-air freedom of the dual panel removable roof. Rugged, stylish and at a price point that is expected to be as approachable as the car is fun, the Jeep Renegade is a sporty entry-level SUV for the not-so-mean streets. SOUTHLAKE STYLE
