According to the 2017-2018 “National Pet Owners Survey” from the American Pet Products Association, 68 percent of U.S. households own a pet. From the many, many online submissions to our Stylin’ Pets Photo Contest, it’s obvious we top yet another national statistic! Upon launching the contest online, we expected our fill of dog and cat photos to pour in. In reality, we were immersed in a Noah’s Ark of variety. We were all smiles as we dutifully pinned your top dogs — and cats — and lizards, birds, goats and more to our office leaderboard. In the end, we exceeded our monthly quota of smiles, so thank you. And we came to the conclusion that Plum Marsh with her doggie vest and Instagram account was just too cute and fashionable to be anywhere other than this month’s cover. I’m not going to lie, comparing digital personas against a French Bulldog and her Instagram account left me a little uneasy. In this day and age of doggie Instagrams it has become apparent that Southlake Style was in need of a digital makeover. I’m delighted to say that our makeover has come and, thanks to our team, we are ready for our closeup! For months, the entire Southlake Style team has been working like dogs behind the scenes to get SouthlakeStyle.com 3.0 online for all to view. We’re proud of our bold new design and enhanced functionality, and we look forward to continuing to bring your stories to life online and in print. Much like our Stylin’ Pets Photo Contest, there was a little barking, some feathers flying and a little llama drama, but in the end, we’re proud to present another winner.

So bright and light is what is selling today. This wonderful home had great spaces but needed the WOW factor. Using a mood board, we developed a color palette, found textiles that would enhance the space and added large natural ocean shells to enhance the beautiful mantle. A breath of freshness was felt each time a buyer walked through.

CHRONICLES OF NARNIA C.S. LEWIS “My favorite books are the ‘Wizard is Oz’ and the ‘The Chronicles of Narnia.’ I like them because they have lots of adventure, are magical, have made up things and you can really imagine yourself in the story when you read them.” – Abigail Perez, author of “How To Be A Super Kid”

AN EDITED LIFE ANNA NEWTON FEBRUARY 5 Get a Head Start on Some Spring Cleaning With the full title “An Edited Life: Simple Steps to Streamlining Life, at Work and at Home,” this book is sure to inspire de-cluttering all aspects of your life. Author Anna Newton is speaking from her personal attempts to stay organized and make the most out of her time. After trying popular methods to stay on top of things, Newton realized there is no one correct way to live a balanced life. Rather than cutting things out completely, she has learned that the key is to edit. Join her as she edits aspects of her life to maximize doing what she loves. If your resolutions didn’t make it to February, this is a great read to get you back on track.

THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY NETFLIX FEBRUARY 15 A Family Full of Superpowers

ISN’T IT ROMANTIC IN THEATERS FEBRUARY 13 Not Your Average Valentine’s Day Movie A self-proclaimed cynic of romantic-comedies is in for the ultimate irony when she awakens to an alternate “PG-13 Universe.” Natalie (Rebel Wilson) is an Australian architect living in New York. After getting knocked unconscious during a subway mugging, she wakes up as a self-aware leading lady in her own bizarre romantic comedy. To get back to normal life, she must find love and achieve “happily ever after.” Rebel Wilson is sure to keep you laughing as her sneering character faces a love-struck hunk named Blake (Liam Hemsworth). Priyanka Chopra and Adam DeVine complete the starstudded cast.

Based on a comic book series of the same name by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, “The Umbrella Academy” is based in an alternate reality in which John F. Kennedy was never assassinated. In the books, Sir Reginald Hargreeves (aka The Monocle), an extraterrestrial who is disguised as a wealthy entrepreneur, adopts seven super-powered children and trains them to save the world. The Netflix series picks up after The Monocle’s death, focusing on the adopted siblings reuniting. The Hargreeves heroes include Luther (Tom Hopper), Diego (David Castañeda), Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Klaus (Robert Sheehan), The Boy (Aidan Gallagher), Ben (Ethan Hwang) and Vanya (Ellen Page).

20 SOUTHLAKE

TOW N SQUARE at

BY AS H L E Y MA D O N NA

I

t’s hard to imagine Southlake without its town square, which makes it difficult to believe we’re just now celebrating its 20th anniversary. The two – a city full of potential and a gathering space for its people – provide what the other needs. It wasn’t until Cooper & Company U.S. Real Estate (Cooper & Stebbins at the time) came to town in the mid-’90s that it started to take shape. The district’s late developer, CEO and visionary Brian Stebbins had his heart set on creating a downtown from scratch. Not one that would eventually be deserted for the next best thing like other centers sprinkled throughout the country. But rather, build a hub for the community that would evolve with its people. So when the Cooper & Company team first saw Southlake, they didn’t see it for what it was. They saw what could be. Anchored by the DFW International Airport, dense neighboring cities like Alliance and budding regional communities, Cooper & Company knew they could create an open-air, experimental development that would house current and future locals, bringing their concept to fruition. It can be challenging to get others to buy into your vision, but Stebbins and current president Frank Bliss took the time to evaluate what Southlake and its nearby cities would look like in future generations. They didn’t just rely on the information before them. They looked at the upcoming workforce and the momentum of Southlake to sell people and future tenants on what this area would become, which started a new chapter in the city’s history. “We had to find a new way to communicate growth,” Bliss says. “We talked about creating a windshield instead of having to look through the back mirror.” After years of planning, designing, constructing and executing the exquisite first phase of the development, on March 20, 1999, locals gathered to celebrate what was to come. Public officials like then Southlake Mayor Rick Stacy spoke, children gathered for the city’s FEB 19 • 21

first parade and locals browsed the district’s new retailers including GAP, Talbots and Williams-Sonoma, all of which will also be celebrating their 20th year anniversary this year. “This is truly a day of firsts, a new beginning for our community, a foundation for the future,” then Southlake Mayor Rick Stacy said, according to the November 31, 1999, issue of “Southlake News & Times.” On that first day, six new national stores reported setting records for their opening day sales. And, thanks to Texas’ constantly changing weather, the morning’s cold front resulted in high demand for outerwear purchases, a fond memory for those who were the first to venture out and swipe their cards at the new shops. That chilly morning full of bustling shoppers may feel long past, but the excitement lives on with every visit to Southlake Town Square. It’s still the heart for what’s happening in town and still acts as a destination for locals and tourists alike to come together and live in community. There may be more retail, restaurant and residential opportunities now than when the first 250,000 square feet opened 20 years ago, but the vision is still the same. And there’s still room to grow. The 131-acre lot exudes the same potential to grow as the city does. There’s room for more office spaces, another hotel and exponentially more residential plots – on top of those currently under construction. 22 • FEB 19

SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

Since opening, Southlake Town Square has acted as a model for other cities interested in revitalizing their community downtowns. The district is even on the cover of the second edition of the “Mixed-Use Development Handbook.” While others may be trying to emulate the concept, the development still feels uniquely ours. It wasn’t built in a day, but Southlake Town Square’s 20 years prove it doesn’t take a lifetime to weave a development into the fabric of a city. Over its tenure, the district has become a pinpoint for what makes the city unique – both with its amenities and its spirit. Cooper & Company created something 20 years ago that will be with Southlake as it continues to develop into its full potential. And even though Stebbins is no longer with us, his initial desire and vision will continue to affect generations. “Personally my biggest joy is that the vision was so strong and it can survive [Stebbins’] passing,” Bliss says.

THREE THINGS WE JUST LEARNED ABOUT SOUTHLAKE TOWN SQUARE We’ve watched Southlake Town Square take shape over the years, but there’s always more to learn about the development. Here are a few things we learned while looking into the district’s history.

1. Stebbins sketched the park in front of Town Hall after drawing inspiration from squares in Savannah, Georgia, as well as the square in Washington, Iowa, where he spent a great deal of time while growing up and visiting his grandfather. 2. After the completion of Parkview Residences in late 2019, there will be a total of just over 100 residences in Southlake Town Square with 60 additional residences and five custom home lots in the pipeline for future development. 3. Every phase of Southlake Town Square is marked with the year of its completion. So be on the lookout for some engraved dates next time you are walking through the district.

THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR JOB IS… Hands-down getting to know students and collaborating with my fellow counselors. I’m all about building meaningful and positive relationships. Our students have so much to teach us if we will just take the time to listen.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR STRESSED STUDENTS? Make a list of what HAS to be done and tackle those things first; set shortterm and long-term goals; eliminate distractors and/or prioritize where your focus and energy needs to go. Do not be afraid to ask for help!

HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED FOR CARROLL ISD? I’ve been in CISD for 23 years. I taught at Carroll Middle School for 10 years, and then I transitioned to Carroll High School and Senior High as a counselor. This past November, I became the K-12 Coordinator of Counselors for Carroll ISD.

IF YOU COULD, WHAT WOULD YOU TELL YOUR HIGH SCHOOL SELF? Not to take myself too seriously.

ask A . . Tammy Pulse WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR PARENTS REGARDING BULLYING? Communication is key. It’s important for parents to talk to their children and to know the warning signs of bullying. Monitoring student’s social media accounts to ensure that they are maintaining healthy boundaries in regards to cyber citizenship is very important.

WHAT’S THE LARGEST CHALLENGE FACING SCHOOL COUNSELORS? As we see the numbers of students who are in need of social/emotional support, our counselors spend a great deal of time dealing with students who are in distress, which in turn can create a secondary stress for the counselor.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO WORK WITH KIDS? I love working with kids because they are full of life and untapped potential. I feel like it’s our job as adults to preserve the goodness in our students and to provide a listening, empathetic ear for them in order to guide them in making healthy decisions throughout their life.

LOCAL SOCIAL GROUP RAISES MORE THAN $26,000 FOR METROPORT MEALS ON WHEELS The Distilled Gentlemen, a local social group founded for men to come together to enjoy fine spirits, fellowship and food while also supporting philanthropic efforts, held their first Christmas party fundraiser in December. More than 300 people showed up to the invite-only group’s gathering at a local house and were able to raise $12,750 for Metroport Meals On Wheels through ticket sales and sponsorships. After the night concluded, club member and owner of Scratch Kitchen Ted Bilskey received a call from the nonprofit with the news that an anonymous donor matched the night’s proceeds. So a total exceeding $26,000 would benefit their organization. The event also acted as a toy drive for the GRACE Christmas Cottage, and the group collected more than 150 toys including a brand new bike!

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” It’s a fair question, often asked to children by adults. Depending on the age group in question, some common responses may include a firefighter, a singer, an athlete or sometimes even a princess. Those answers often change as kids get older, but that’s not the case for Walnut Grove Elementary fourth-grader Abigail Perez. In fact, she is debunking the very question. “I used to say ‘I want to be an author when I grow up,’’’ she says. “But then I realized I can do it right now. There are no rules against it. It’s not like how you have to be 16 before you can drive.” Since she was only four years old, Abigail has always said she wanted to be a best-selling published author and illustrator. She has lined the family’s foyer with pages upon pages of her illustrated stories, taping them together before picking them up. Twenty-four drafts of one story later, she published a book last fall. “How To Be A Super Kid” has already proven to be a hit on Amazon and in the community. Beyond that, Abigail is using the book to raise money for nonprofits that support her mission to empower kids. “I wrote the book because I really like writing and I really like superheroes,” Abigail explains. “I want every kid to know that they can be a superhero because inside everyone is a super kid waiting to shine. So, I wrote it so I could help other kids become the super kid they were created to be.”

HERE’S THE SCOOP While “How To Be A Super Kid” is her first published book, it is far from her first book she has shared with her peers. In 2017, before putting a pencil to paper on her 5-Star Amazon hit, Abigail wrote stories and took them to school for an informal peer review. “Last year, she had gotten to the point where she would take her books to school and have people sign it on the back if they enjoyed it, or they would leave feedback,” her mom, Elizabeth Perez, explains. “Then in the next book, she would incorporate them somehow.” Seeing an age gap in the superhero market, Abigail took it upon herself to remedy the issue. “How To Be A Super Kid,” subtitled “Six Scoops to Earning Your Super Kid Status,” teaches kids how to navigate life in a positive and empowering way. The imagery features scoops of ice cream, each representative of a lesson or way to be a super kid, intermingled with drawings of kids carrying out tasks or simply being super. Right away, readers will notice the book includes kids from all walks of life. A range of races and abilities are represented, including one girl in a wheelchair and a little boy with an eyepatch. “I wanted to make sure that everyone could see themselves in the book, and I wanted everyone to know that they could be a super kid, so I didn’t draw people that only looked just like me,” the young author says. “I wanted to be inclusive. I wanted everyone to know that they are super kids. They have it inside them and everyone is different.” SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

The “scoops” range from goal setting to nutrition to positive affirmations and more. Any adult who has read a motivational self-help book may even recognize some of these simplified tips to on how to be super. One scoop in particular teaches kids on how to handle a bully. Like the rest of the book, the lesson rhymes, making it easy to remember. “If a bully is mean to you and calls you a name...turn away from the bully but don’t act the same.” Over a span of two pages, Abigail teaches a profound lesson – one birthed from her own personal experience. “When you feel like someone is being mean to you, you don’t feel like being a super kid at all,” Abigail says. “Some bullies have been bullied, and that’s what causes them to be bullies. Some people don’t even realize that they’ve become bullies.” She went as far as to illustrate the bully as a bull, so as to not represent any kid in a bad light. After writing the book, Abigail recalls a time in which she was bullied. She remembered the rhyme and turned away, rather than responding in anger. Many of her Amazon reviewers agree: These lessons aren’t just for kids. “You can read this book in five minutes, or you can spend a lifetime,” Elizabeth says. “You can spend an hour on every scoop, having a discussion with the class. It’s a unique opportunity for both parents and children to look at lifestyle changes that could be super simple.”

MORE THAN A BOOK Though Abigail has already been writing for more than half of her lifetime, the journey to becoming a published author started to accelerate at the beginning of 2017. Abigail attended an event hosted by House of Shine, a local nonprofit with a mission to uncover talents of women and children and enable them to use those gifts to better the communities around them. SHINE stands for Strengths, Hobbies, Interests & Irritants, Needs and Experiences. In early 2017, The House of Shine hosted an author and jewelry designer, Margo Manhattan, to speak. FEB 19 • 39

“So Abigail attended, and not knowing anyone, came with a stack of books that she had written,” Elizabeth recalls with a smile. “She marched up to Margo and said, ‘Hi, my name is Abigail, and I want to be a published author and illustrator.’” The event inspired Abigail in more ways than one. Not only did she get to meet a published children’s book author but also she was able to find a tangible goal. At the event, three posters were on display with pictures of three different girls. While talking with the nonprofit’s founder, Dr. Claudia Beeney, Abigail asked how she could get on one of those posters. “Well,” Dr. Beeney says. “You have to earn it.” On its calendar of events, House of Shine had the “Be. Do. Share. Holiday Fair” slated for December 1. The event features young artisans and their work and offers an outlet for holiday shopping while supporting their endeavors. Abigail made it her goal to have a book published by that fair. “How To Be A Super Kid” was available to the public on November 12. “By day three, she became an Amazon bestseller in 10 categories, and she is still tracking No. 1 on the Kindle version,” Elizabeth said in mid-December. “The average author, especially self-published author, sells about 250 books in their lifetime. Abigail is close to 2,000 one month after it published.” A large portion of those books were sold in under 15 minutes. The best part: $10 per book was donated to grant the wish of someone fighting for their life. The Perez family was first introduced to the Front Row Foundation earlier this summer. The nonprofit aims to give anyone who is fighting for their life the chance to have a front row experience. Whether that involves a concert or even an overseas rugby match, Front Row Foundation ensures that the experience is top notch. Abigail wanted to give a kid that kind of experience, so she decided to use her her book to make it happen. In December, Abigail’s parents – Elizabeth and Philip – attended a conference. On the final day, a short, one-minute video that Abigail sent was played prior to an auction. Her book is normally $15, but that day it was being sold for $20, with the extra five dollars being matched by her family and donated to a kid who is battling an illness. In less than 15 minutes, she more than doubled her goal of $5,000 raised to give a kid a Front Row experience, selling 1,086 books. 40 • FEB 19

SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

STILL A KID While Abigail is learning how to be an entrepreneur and what it means to be in the red versus the black, she is most definitely still a kid. In fact, while her book was raising over $10,000 for Front Row, she was in pajamas, having breakfast with Santa. And that’s the beauty of “How To Be A Super Kid.” Instead of an adult telling kids how to act, it’s a kid empowering her peers through lessons she’s still learning. Some days, she may get pulled out of school to speak to a crowd of 125 adults or pulled out of recess to have a mentoring session with international best selling author, Hal Elrod of the Miracle Morning. Other days, she is being interviewed for a podcast. She had a book release party instead of a 10th birthday party. At the end of the day, however, she is simply living the vibrant life of a 10-year-old, from piano lessons and chores to jiu jitsu and tennis lessons. In her own wonderful, youthful way, Abigail is quick to dream big. She is currently working with inspirational pop artist, Brotha James to produce an empowering Super Kid SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

themed song and music video with hopes to inspire kids all over the world to unleash their super kid powers. She hopes to someday have a store with merchandise in theme of her book. “Maybe when I grow up I will own a store with super kids stuff,” she says excitedly. “And when I have grandchildren and great grandchildren...” She trails off before venturing into ideas for a super kids roller coaster. In the meantime, she has goals for her community including rallying support for Carroll Education Foundation to provide funding to teachers. Abigail and her family also volunteer with Kids Matter, a local nonprofit dedicated to serving underprivileged children in Tarrant County. At one volunteer event, she told her mom: “This time next year, I want all of those kids to have a copy of my book. They can’t afford it, but I want to raise enough money to give it to them because the message is important for them to hear.” Elizabeth estimates they will need 500 books to donate. If anyone can make it happen, it’s our local super kid, Abigail Perez. FEB 19 • 41

FACE OF PRESCHOOL EDUCATION Angela Bennett, Leeann Hart and Casey Kopecky What sets your team apart from other businesses? The Children’s Courtyard staff believes that children learn by doing, through hands-on experiences with people, materials, events and ideas. Each child’s experience at The Children’s Courtyard is built on that belief. In addition, all teachers receive ongoing training throughout the year. What is your company’s secret to success? We see each child as unique. So we bring a personalized approach to their care and education that is tailored around each child’s progress, skills and interests, rather than using a cookie cutter approach for every child in the same age group. This way, we help the child build a foundation for a lifetime of success at The Children’s Courtyard. What is the best part of the job? The best part of the job is that we have the opportunity to be a part of so many families and children’s lives, which allows us to see them grow and learn.

Plum Marsh’s family rescued her last March, and she has already made herself a beloved part of the gang. Her mom, Cassidy, found her through the French Bulldog Rescue Network when she needed more love than ever. Plum was adopted with a major ear infection, which has left her with a permanent head tilt. But that doesn’t stop her from protecting her extensive toy selection, snuggling her human siblings and zooming around their Keller home after bath time. SCOUT WEAVER Some pet owners say, “I didn’t pick her, she picked me,” when referring to adorable adoption scenarios. This is almost true in Scout’s case. When the Weaver family bought their farm two years ago, they learned that Scout’s former owner had no intention of moving her llamas when the property sold. So, Scout came with the land, and the Weavers jumped into llama ownership with both feet. She’s the nosy one of the three and routinely follows her humans around in hope of treats. Her hobbies include skinny dipping and eating every plant in sight.

He stays stylish thanks to 10-year-old Sophie’s baths using a tiny toothbrush and his ensemble of accessories including Santa, cowboy and “Where’s Waldo” hats. o your dogs think it’s their house and you just happen to be living in it? Throw them a bone to make them think they have their own furniture in their palace by investing in some proper pupper seating options, like the Tramblay Flannelette Dog Sofa. This Wayfair model can easily fit into your current living room décor with its neutral tones and timeless look. The faux leather is sure to hold up against some wear and tear while still keeping its refined feel. With handsome rolled arms, tufted button accents and an elegant nail head trim, the piece looks like a purposeful accent in your home. Not to mention the dog bed’s foam cushion makes it

a comfortable option for pets that are used to a little extra pampering. If you have a puppy or a biting fiend on your hands, you may want to hold off on purchasing this model, as it is not chew-resistant. And weighing in at 22 lbs., you’ll want to ensure only your smaller dogs (under 50 lbs.) hop on this elevated couch. It is not made for massive pups that seem to believe they are lap dogs, but it’s a great find for petite pets with a gentler spirit that want something chic to perch on. Now, you won’t feel bad about shooing your furry friends off the sofa because they have a luxurious alternative of their very own. Plus, it will help you regain control of the people furniture in the room so you feel like you are the king of your own home.

Swanky Saloon Billy Can Can Redefines Dallas Dining By Looking Back At Its Past

D BILLY CAN CAN 2386 Victory Park Dallas 214.296.2610 BillyCanCan.com

allas dining has a new sheriff in town, and his name is Billy Can Can. The 19th century-inspired Texan saloon opened last summer under the leadership of restaurateur Tristan Simon, executive chef Matt Ford and former “Dallas Morning News” restaurant critic and now lead food and beverage, marketing and media for Rebees, the company that owns Billy Can Can. Since then, the star-studded team has demonstrated that while they built out a whimsical concept, they can still churn out a superb dining experience with their welcoming vibe and divine dishes. Named after a fictional Dallas patron, Billy Can Can embodies the kind of old-timey saloon current diners would actually enjoy visiting.

There’s no dust in the corners or swinging wooden doors. Rather, the open concept space is adorned with sleek materials and creates a modern watering hole perfect for those wanting to grab a quick drink or revel in a nice meal out. Guests can saunter through the main dining room humming with welcoming staff and friendly banter and past the robust wooden bar boasting premium bottles to get a feel for the location’s energy. After finding a table, either a spot at the large high top in the center of the action or a cozy booth in the back room, guests will find both the drink and dinner menu feature exquisite Texan finds exclusive to the eatery.

LOCALFLAVOR review

The wine selection lists French, Spanish, Mexican, Argentinian and American vintages that match their vibe. And the Texan assortment proves there are high-quality wines created right here in the Lone Star State – you just have to know where to find them. “We sought delicious, balanced, well-made, food-friendly wines with character – and definitely found some wonderful ones, many from producers we hadn’t seen much (or in some cases, at all) on Dallas restaurant wine lists – such as Hilmy Cellars, Southold Farm + Cellar, Yellow City Cellars and William Chris Vineyards,” Brenner says. Their cocktails prove to stand up to those same high standards with strong contenders like the Sonora Showdown, blanco tequila, mescal, saloon-made tepache, lime and ancho chile salt. And it wouldn’t be a proper saloon without local beers on draft and a “beers for the back” option for those generous diners who want to buy a six-pack for the kitchen, which comes with a ring of the restaurant’s bell. While sipping on libations, guests can munch on one of their standout appetizers like the Texan Venison Tartare, decorated with egg yolk, juniper, cherries, fried shallots and rosemary bread, or the Crispy Oyster Sliders, fashioned on a sweet potato roll and accompanied by a tangy slaw and comeback sauce. To get a taste for a variety of their playful flavors, ask about the Assorted Devil Eggs. Each of the half dozen comes out with a keen sense of detail individually dressed with toppings like blue crab, candied bacon, pickled shrimp and crispy country ham. “It’s a classic dish with a couple fun spins to it, served on a vintage milk-glass deviled egg plate,” Ford says. “The way we cut the eggs is fun, the different toppings are fun and the plate, with its gilt edge, adds a fun touch.” The fun doesn’t stop after the first course. The whiskeybrined Long-Bone Pork Chop served with winter greens, dried apricots and ham-hock broth brings strong, hearty and sweet flavors together to create a balanced bite. Those looking for comfort food can find joy in the Scallops & Grits served with chorizo and saloon hot sauce. Each forkful comes full of flavor and makes it easy to keep eating as the night moseys on. Don’t forget to order some Cast-Iron Cornbread or Hand-Cut Fries for the table. These elevated basics round out the spread with their effortless yet welldeveloped flavors. For those who still have room after the table is cleared, the Frozen Chocolate PB&G is an indulgence worth sticking around for. Crafted with peanut butter and chocolate mousse, frozen grapes and chocolate crumble, the intricate flavor profile and textures hiding in the sweet provide a delicious dessert full of welcomed surprises. It’s the hottest place to take visitors traveling to Texas who are interested in the local food community or remind yourself what makes Dallas dining unique. You may not meet him during your visit, but Billy Can Can is sure to be remembered by his guests.

Snack On Shack Shake Shack Joins Southlake’s Burger Scene

The East Coast fan favorite has come to town. Shake Shack opened its first Tarrant County restaurant right here in Southlake Town Square, a project that took months to finalize. “We are very purposeful in the cities we choose to open in,” Shake Shack’s area director Lisa Sluder says. “We look for dynamic neighborhoods and locations with distinctive community gathering places. We’ve had our eye on Southlake for a while, but we were waiting for the right location.” For those unfamiliar with the brand, Shake Shack has grown from New York hot dog cart to international burger mogul since opening its first permanent kiosk in 2004. Known for its long lines, classic dishes and creamy desserts, the quick-service, casual eatery has gained a cult following who won’t let anything get in the way of their next bite. Now locals can sink their teeth into one of their classic burgers without traveling across town to a Dallas location. Crafted with fresh, all-natural Angus beef and a non-GMO Martin’s potato roll, the made-to-order burgers come out prepared medium and ready to savor. Shake Shack does offer barbecue and chicken-based options, but Sluder knows it’s their original creation that made them a worldwide success. “Our ShackBurger put us on the map, so that item is a must,” Sluder says. Southlake’s location will feature DFW vendors to cater their dishes to locals’ appetites. Whether you are sipping on one of their craft beers or enjoying a sweet addition to one of their classic custards, the new site offers something different than what’s already cooking up in Southlake. “Every time we enter a new neighborhood, we seek out the best local purveyors to team up with,” Sluder says. “For our Southlake location, we’ll be working with Emporium Pies, Pecan Lodge, Community Beer Co, Deep Ellum Brewing Company and Four Corners Brewing Co.” Once the weather warms up, locals will love sitting out on their capacious patio, munching on their delicious dishes and looking out on Southlake Town Square. It’s set to become the new hot spot for grabbing a quick bite or treating the family to a fun lunch out.

Three Destinations For True Animal Lovers

A

nimals are easy to love, but not always easy to travel with. This is especially true for pretty much any non-dog animal. With that in mind, we have compiled some destinations for animal lovers. Whether you go to these destinations specifically for furry friends or they are just stops along the way, these places are worth a visit. Traveling to Canada for Woofstock may seem silly to your friends, but your pup won’t judge. Bring him or her along to be a part of the fun. For the equestrian enthusiasts out there, see the beauty and splendor of the untamed herds of mustangs in North Carolina.

96 • FEB 19

Don’t worry cat-lovers; we have you covered as well with an island in Japan that has more felines than humans. And who wouldn’t want that? Get ready to pack your bags…and don’t forget a lint roller!

Outer Banks of North Carolina Southlake is home to plenty of horse lovers, so whether you are one or know one, keep reading for one of the best equine-centered vacations in America. In the Outer Banks of North Carolina, wild mustangs, believed to have descended from Spanish mustangs brought over by early explorers, freely roam. Although they are a coveted sight for tourists, it is illegal to pet, feed or come within 50 feet of the majestic creatures. However, you are free to admire from a

distance, and there are plenty of tour companies that will take you within photo range, all while giving a history lesson of the area and its resident untamed herds. The horses tend to stick to areas requiring four-wheel drive, so if you’d rather stay on the beaten path, the Wild Horse Museum in Historic Corolla Village will educate you on everything you ever wanted to know about wild Spanish Mustangs. It is free and open year-round, so bring the whole family whenever! During the summer, the museum also sponsors children’s activities, including live visits and rides with tamed mustangs. Toronto, Ontario, Canada Self-proclaimed as the largest outdoor festival for dogs in North America, Woofstock should be on every dog-lover’s bucket list. This year will mark 16 years since the festival’s beginning at Toronto’s Distillery District. In that time, it has outgrown two locations and is now celebrating five years at Woodbrine Park. Typically held at the end of May to early June, Woofstock is the perfect excuse to see if your pup has what it takes to win the crown of Ms. or Mr. Canine Canada. The event also features speaker series, the Ultimutts Stunt Dog Show, plenty of vendors to shop at, doga (dog-yoga), a fashion show and so much more. The Doggie Play Zone allows your furry friends to play off-leash to their heart’s content. Expect to see some familiar faces, too. Last year, social media famous dogs such as Doug the Pug and Crusoe the Celebrity Dachshund were among the attendees of Woofstock. Schedules haven’t been released for the upcoming Woofstock yet, but star power is not uncommon among the festival-going pups. It’s a pooch paradise to say the least. Woofstock.ca

Tashirojima Island, Ishinomaki, Japan Originally brought to the island as pest control around silkworm farms, cats have now laid claim to the Japanese island of Tashirojima, outnumbering humans four to one. It may surprise non-cat lovers to find that despite their overwhelming numbers, the cats are cared for and revered by the island’s human residents. A centuriesold belief that cats would bring the island’s fishermen good luck resulted in a small, cat-sized Cat Shrine located at the center of the island. To get to the cat-haven, tourists must take a one-hour ferry ride from central Ishinomaki. Once there, be advised there is not much in place to accommodate tourists. There are no restaurants and there are very few shops and public bathrooms. It may be in your best interests to make a day trip out of it and enjoy the rest that Japan has to offer once you’ve had your fill of feline fun. Japan-Guide.com

Fall In Love At ‘Amaluna’ Watch Acrobats Soar, Twist And Dance In The Sky At Cirque du Soleil’s Latest Show

L

ove is literally in the air this month. At least, it is for the talented acrobats who flip their bodies in incredible ways in Cirque du Soleil’s romantic show, “Amaluna.” Femininity presides over the island of Amaluna, which is ruled by goddesses. After Queen Prospera directs her daughter’s coming of age ceremony, she creates a storm that inadvertently causes young men to wash up on shore. One brave soul falls in love with Prospera’s daughter, leading to an intense and wonderful love story. Cirque du Solieil’s show is full of intricate costumes, gorgeous hair and makeup, detailed sets and fantastic music. But this isn’t your average on-stage production. Guests will also be treated to many jaw-dropping performances including artists dancing over the audience on straps that allow them to move 360 degrees, men launching themselves in the air to complete complicated flips and turns, gymnasts using bars to twist and spin and a gorgeous woman who dances inside a crystal-clear bowl of water. Although they are known for their world-class productions, Cirque du Soleil started with just 20 street performers in Montreal, Canada, in 1984. Since, the group has grown to include approximately 4,000 people (including 1,300 artists from nearly 50 different countries) who have presented their spectacular shows to more than 180 million people in 450 cities across 60 countries. Want to learn even more about the extraordinary men and women who make up Cirque du Soleil? Purchase a behind the scenes ticket and show up two hours before the show begins. You will get an exclusive backstage tour, be treated to hors d’oeuvres and cocktails, get to watch the performance from a VIP suite, meet the artists after the show and receive a special gift. Through courageous leaps and beautiful movements “Amaluna” portrays love on stage just like we feel it in our hearts. DETAILS Date: Through February 17 Location: Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie

LOCAL SERVICE DOG TRAINER MAKES A DIFFERENCE, ONE PUP AT A TIME

M

aureen sat in awe at her first service dog graduation. As students lined up with their trained companions, eagerly awaiting taking their pups home and integrating them into their everyday lives, she knew she wanted to be a part of that mission. So when she moved to Texas, she founded IDEA Service Dogs, a nonprofit originally run out of her Keller home. It has since grown into a 12-member volunteer team with the mission of giving their students more independence with the assistance of man’s best friend. It may sound cute to pair puppies with their new homes and teach them how to lend a helping hand, but Maureen knows it takes hard work and commitment to train these animals.

I PRETTY MUCH BECAME … disabled over night. I was on a business trip, and we think I caught something there. I woke up with this swelling everywhere. I ended up having to leave my career. So I volunteered with a women’s organization in Santa Fe, a high-end resale shop. From that shop, the organization donated about $200,000 to local charities, and my job was to decide whom to give the money to. The first year, one of the charities we selected was a service training school. They invited me to come to a graduation ceremony, and I couldn’t stop crying. I have always been an animal lover and just to see the gratitude of the people receiving those dogs and the kind of things those dogs are able to do for them, it stopped me in my tracks. MY FIRST SERVICE DOG … was Mercy who I got in 2001. She was a golden retriever. My current service dog is Sophie, and I got her 2011 – also a golden retriever. I will be getting a golden puppy next summer to begin training her while Sophie is still young and healthy enough to help in the puppy’s training. WE TRAIN SERVICE DOGS … primarily for adults with mobility disabilities, seizure disorders and medical alert. Our students have a variety of disabilities such as M.S., stroke disease, POTS, arthritis and skeletal disorders. But we are also training the owner. We teach our students how to fish versus giving them the fish. We train the disabled person to train their own dog. Our success is based on the diligence and commitment of the person. NOT EVERY DOG … is cut out to be a service dog. The dog has to be social non-intimidating and smart. The dog needs to be of sufficient size for mobility reasons. We tend to gravitate toward golden retrievers, Labrador retrievers and standard poodles. But we’ve trained everything from retired racing greyhounds to German shepherds to boxers. It’s not the breed. It’s the temperament of the dog.

WE TRAIN … the behavior first by using positive methods such as using clickers to mark the behavior we want and then treating the dog with a small, soft treat. We reward the behaviors we want and prevent/ignore/distract away from the behaviors we do not want. We add the “cue” once the dog understands the desired behavior 80 percent of the time. All dogs learn how to retrieve a dropped or thrown object, how to find an object, how to brace and most dogs learn complex retrieval, opening or pawing things open like a door and retrieval of a person for assistance. Our program takes between 15 and 24 months. WE ALSO SPEND … a lot of time in the beginning not only understanding the methods to teach their dogs but also the Americans with Disability Acts for when they are accosted out in the world. It’s a huge life change to be out in the world with a dog. ONE OF THE THINGS … that always gets me is when I see people walking their dogs and they are pulling on them as the dog walks in front. It’s so dangerous for the dog because if they have a leash on a collar, they are pulling on their thyroid. Leash and harness use and how to walk a dog properly is something I wish every dog owner knew how to do. And it’s not hard to do. It keeps the dog safe. THESE DOGS … make our students’ lives easier. We provide increased independence for their disabled owners with highly trained dogs that assist them with specific tasks or work. The dogs get a pretty wonderful job too. They get to go about anywhere with their person, are constantly praised and adored, get to travel and have some fun too! When they need to retire, they stay with their family as a pet and can help train the successor service dog.

Exiting the Comfort Zone

L

ike you, Southlake is my home. Not just because I live here, but because I have always lived here. My family moved out to our seven acres off Sunshine Lane, which looks nothing like it does today, in 1983. Despite this being my home to the core, I am not immune to being a stranger in my own town. The night was chilly, and I was already worried about what I was going to wear. I had accepted an invitation to a rather large event, but I didn’t know a single person attending. As I walked to the front door of the stunning home, dripping with beauty and lavishness that my attire clearly didn’t reflect, I instantly filled with regret. Briefly considering a quick turnaround back to my car, I squinted my eyes, rang the doorbell and hoped for the best. Immediately, I knew I did not fit in. At all. I would be lucky if one person even realized my existence. I walked my coat and handbag to the back while scanning for all the exits. I conjured as many excuses as I could to bolt or avoid eye contact with everyone. You don’t belong here, boomed a dark voice in my head. Except my heart spoke louder: Stay. Everything in me raged against my heart’s plea. All of my insecurities, screaming, reminded me of the many ways I didn’t belong, yet there I stood, breathing deeply with my mindset to the focus of my heart. To battle against that dark voice, I repeated to myself: Stretch yourself. Embrace this burn of awkward. Life starts when you exit the comfort zone.

An hour passed, still, no one spoke to me. But I smiled because somewhere in the middle of these few awkward hours I realized that this – this right here – is where growth begins. This moment wasn’t hugely defining in itself, but this was the first time in my 37 years of life that I didn’t run when I felt prickling discomfort. Instead, I allowed the burn of awkward to transform into a root of confidence, to debunk that lie that I am not enough, I do not fit in because I don’t look the part, or whatever non-truth it may be that day. This was an ordinary moment that did something extraordinary: It enabled me to be able to rise above my insecurities and chase the woman that I know lives within. The reality is none of us like to stand in such utter discomfort. We surround ourselves with only the familiar. We avoid walking into settings in which we feel alone or different. But friends, the uncomfortable is exactly where we are supposed to go to grow. This year is still new. Tomorrow’s day is fresh. Southlake is a special place where stereotypes boom as loud as my own insecurities. But with us all stepping out toward growth, the world will begin to see what this community is really made of.
