Get Inspired New Year, new commitment to goals—eat more kale and fewer carbs, go for a daily jog, floss more often (okay, start flossing). We have the best intentions with New Year’s resolutions, but let’s face it: Most of us make them and break them before Punxsutawney Phil rears his sleepy little head. Eating healthier, getting fit and improving our overall lives are goals that so often evade us. Perhaps we just need a little inspiration. You can always find a good reason to not work out, but with so many options in and around Southlake, you can’t use the old “the gym is packed” excuse. Gone are the days of big-box gyms flooded with resolution-ers fighting over treadmills; these days, fitness seekers have a world of options, from yoga and cycling to kickboxing and barre workouts. In “Fitness in the ’Burbs” on page 28, we take a look at how boutique studios are changing the way we work out. Dare I say that getting fit can even be fun. I’ve come to look forward to my pulse-pounding, adrenaline-pumping cycle classes. Throw in some wine and socializing on Wine-Down Wednesday, and it keeps me coming back. Keeping bodies healthy is always on the minds of the healthcare heroes on page 14. These outstanding medical professionals work each day to make life better for their patients, often going above and beyond the call of duty. Take Drs. Jonathan and Kristen Angwin, for example. This husband-and-wife dental team travels the globe to provide dental care to poverty-stricken patients. Jonathan says, “Our goal is to live each day with purpose and constantly strive to improve the lives of those around us.” For another dose of inspiration, turn to page 44 for our story on Marcus Luttrell, former Navy SEAL and author of the bestselling book Lone Survivor that became a 2013 Academy Award-nominated film. Up a Creek Without a Paddle A terrible job, a family death and the end of a 15-year marriage: lately, life hasn’t been kind to Wini, the main character in author Erica Ferencik’s debut novel,“The River at Night.” When Wini and her three best friends take a hiking and rafting girls’ vacation in a remote area of Maine’s wilderness, things turn chaotic fast. While on their adventure, an accident leaves the foursome stranded without their raft or supplies. As night falls, they notice a campfire on a mountainside—what seems to be their only hope of survival. The novel becomes a real page-turner when the women realize the camp’s inhabitants aren’t the helpful harbingers they seem to be.

A Story of Untold Greatness Based on Margot Lee Shetterly’s book of the same name, the film “Hidden Figures” tells the story of three AfricanAmerican women, Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson, “Empire”), Dorothy Vaughn (Octavia Spencer, “The Help”) and Mary Jackson (recording artist Janelle Monáe), who all worked at NASA during the Space Race of the 1960s. Considered to be instrumental in the launch of John Glenn into orbit, this trio of mathematicians was known as the “human computers.” As African-Americans and as women, these three individuals blurred the race and gender lines to become an inspiration to all.

Transfer of Power At the end of Season 5 of Showtime’s hit drama, “Homeland,” heroine Carrie Mathieson (Claire Danes) thwarted a terrorist attack in Berlin. In Season 6, we initially find her living in Brooklyn, New York, working for a foundation that provides aid to Muslims living in the United States. The storyline follows a transitional time for the U.S. government, as the newly elected president will soon take office. Season 6 will cover what takes place in America and abroad from election day to the inauguration. It’s unclear what Carrie’s role will be in this plot, but if you think the months leading up to our Election Day 2016 turned friends to foes, you are in store for an even more edge-of-your-seat plot.

When someone is impaired by a shoulder injury, it’s difficult to perform even simple tasks such as brushing their teeth or washing their hair. And when it comes to sports, a shoulder injury can be devastating—not just to the athlete, but to the entire team. Dr. Harris is passionate about helping athletes return to their game. He’s the team physician for local schools Euless Trinity and Faith Christian, where his three children are students. At the start of each school year, Dr. Harris and the physicians at his practice provide physicals for several local high schools including Birdville and Boswell. Students pay a small fee, which goes toward the athletic program to buy whatever is needed, from new equipment to a new ice machine. And on Friday nights during football season, Dr. Harris volunteers at Euless Trinity or Faith Christian, ready to assist
When patients arrive at Dr. Howard Harris’ office at Texas Orthopedic Specialists, they often just want to get back to their daily lives—working, fishing, golfing. As an orthopedic surgeon specializing in the shoulder, there’s no greater j oy fo r H a r r i s than helping his patients get back to their everyday activities. “The most rewarding part of being a shoulder specialist is seeing somebody return to an activity they love that they couldn’t do when I first started to take care of them,” he says. A native of North Texas, Dr. Harris has been a p hys i c i a n w i t h Texa s O r t h o p e d i c S p e c i a l ists for more than 13 years. He gravitated toward the shoulder after starting his practice, citing “the mechanical aspect of orthopedic surgery in
the school’s medical trainers if someone gets injured. “I’ve always loved working with athletes and athletic

departments,” he says. “With even a minor injury, there’s an urgency to get a treatment plan so athletes can get back to the sport.” Volunteering for Dr. Harris doesn’t stop at the sidelines; he’s also involved with several philanthropies, including the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), a global organization that funds Type 1 diabetes research, and the Arthritis Foundation, which aims to raise awareness and reduce the impact of arthritis. Dr. Harris’ practice supports the Arthritis Foundation from an orthopedic standpoint, serving as a resource for the organization and contributing to its fundraising efforts. The JDRF is especially near to Dr. Harris’ heart; his son is a Type 1 diabetic. Over the past eight years, Dr. Harris has participated in the organization’s annual gala, walk and various fundraising events. On a local level, whenever there’s a hurt in the community, Dr. Harris doesn’t hesitate to help with the healing. When his friends Greg and Tina Clifton tragically lost their 17-year-old son, Chance, in a car accident, Dr. Harris volunteered his time with their nonprofit, the Chance Clifton LIVE BIG Foundation. He served on the advisory board and participated in numerous events to help bring awareness to the organization, which provides educational scholarships and comfort to families suffering from tragic loss. For Dr. Harris, getting involved in times of need just comes naturally. “There’s an inherent drive in me to want to help other people,” he says. “It’s an honor getting to help someone and put a smile on their face.”

Drs. Jonathan and Kristen Angwin, dentists at Just For Grins in Keller, live their lives guided by the familiar mantra: “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” The husband-and-wife team brightens smiles for their patients and for those in need—in the local community and around the world. Each year, the Angwins sponsor a “Smiles for Life” campaign, offering teeth whitening in their office to raise money for seriously ill, disabled or underprivileged children in the community. They also partner with Milestone Church in Keller to provide dental exams, X-rays and cleanings to single moms in the community. “Our goal is to live each day with purpose and constantly strive to improve the lives of those around us,” says Jonathan. Their outreach is far-reaching; the Angwins are actively involved in global mission work. They’ve traveled with the organization Crown Council, an alliance of leading-edge dentists around the world, to provide dental care to hundreds of poverty stricken patients in Honduras and Dominican Republic. This summer, they’ll travel to Nicaragua with their church for 1 Nation 1 Day, a worldwide missions trip. The need for dental care in third-world countries is staggering. “Many of these individuals have never seen a dentist,” Kristen says. “Most came because of severe pain and infection or because they were concerned with the aesthetics of their front teeth.” Jonathan adds, “What stood out to me was the overall excitement to receive dental care. With a smile on their faces, our patients would wait all day in the hot sun to have a dental exam and whatever treatment we could perform.” Kristen recalls meeting a woman on one of the mission trips who broke her two front teeth due to extreme decay. “She refused to smile, her self-esteem was so low,” says Kristen. After root canals and restoring the front teeth with white fillings, she says the woman “walked away with the biggest smile and kept wanting us to take pictures on our phones so she could see her teeth.” While many organizations help provide food, clean water and life-saving medicine to those in need in under-developed nations, dental care is often considered a luxury. The Angwins are doing their part SouthlakeStyle.com
to provide a service that isn’t considered essential but is so desperately needed. “I wanted to go into the medical field because I wanted to care for those in need,” Kristen says. “I truly love providing a service to others that not only puts a smile on their faces but also can provide relief to pain they’ve been experiencing for years.” Since opening Just For Grins in 2008, the Angwins have received numerous awards and accolades, including the Crown Council Practice of the Month and the Keller Citizen Best of the Best Dentist Award. The best reward, though, is seeing patients flash their pearly whites. “I work with kids all day, so the more smiles and giggles, the better,” says Kristen. “My goal is to not only create an environment that kids are comfortable in, but to make Just For Grins an office they want to visit.” Whether they’re in their office in Keller or traveling the globe on a mission trip, the Angwins are thankful to be able to spread smiles. “Every day is a gift,” says Jonathan, “and we are grateful for the opportunity to influence so many lives around us.”

and brings them to the forefront to drive the condition of the unit,” she says. “It can be challenging because everyone comes to me with their complaints. But I get to be part of making a big difference.” When nurses became fatigued, Swysgood had chaplains talk to the staff about managing burnout. The chaplains suggested doing something as a team outside the unit, so the nurses went out for a team dinner together. And when blood pressure monitors weren’t working properly, the council wrote a letter to upper-level management. Nurses got the equipment they needed. Helping her fellow nurses is a major source of pride

REGISTERED NURSE AT BAYLOR SCOTT & WHITE MEDICAL CENTER - GRAPEVINE Providing comfort and care: It’s a huge component of Hannah Swysgood’s role as a registered nurse at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Grapevine. But Swysgood doesn’t just make sure patients have their basic needs taken care of. “We try to give patients the absolute best care that we can,” she says. “We care for them like we would our closest family members.” Swysgood is relatively new to the nursing field— she has been a registered nurse for two years—but she has already taken on a leadership role with her team of nurses in the Progressive Care Unit (PCU). Swysgood is a magnet champion, which means she’s on a mission to make sure the nurses on her floor deliver the best nursing care possible. “Magnet is globally recognized as the highest level of nursing care. As a magnet champion, I’m focused on making the team stronger,” Swysgood says. “It’s educating them about why we provide the best care 100-percent of the time. It’s getting the team involved and excited.” Swysgood also keeps the concerns of her nursing team at the forefront by serving as chair of the Shared Governance Council. “Shared Governance takes the issues of each individual and the whole unit

for Swysgood. “I’m so proud to be part of the PCU team,” she says. “I work with nurses who are always willing to go the extra mile—the extra 10 miles. If there’s anything they can do to help me, they will do it, even if their load is as heavy as mine.” Not only do her colleagues inspire Swysgood to go to work each day; her patients and their families do, too. Swysgood is an advocate for her patients, helping them understand the next step in their care. “It’s funny and entertaining at times,” she says, “and at other times, it’s heart-wrenching when I have to explain a hard diagnosis or provide end-of-life care.” It’s in those moments, when she mourns with a family who has just lost a loved one, that Swysgood feels the magnitude of her job. “I’ve had family members come back to the floor and give us a box of cookies because they were so thankful we made the transition for their loved one to pass away a little smoother,” she says. “The family saw it was peaceful and that they weren’t struggling anymore.” Knowing she’s making a difference—in the lives of her patients and their families—inspires her to provide the best care every day, just as she encourages her colleagues to do. “It’s not just a job. It’s a huge, life-changing position that I get to hold,” Swysgood says. “It’s really, truly the best job in the world.”

SOUTHLAKE RUNNERS COMPETED AGAINST THE COUNTRY’S BEST AT NIKE CROSS NATIONALS Runners from Southlake Cross Country & Track Club competed against the nation’s most elite runners at Nike Cross Nationals in Portland, Oregon, last month. The girls came away with ninth in the nation and the boys took 11th in the nation. This is the 13th year that Nike has hosted this prestigious meet for the top two boys and top two girls teams in each of the eight regions around the country. The girls’ team entered the race as the South Region champions, moving up six spots over last year. Gillian Mortimer came across the finish line first for the girls team, coming in 47th place overall. The boy’s team placed 11th,

Hinkle’s walk, called “The Hump,” began April 3 in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He completed his journey November 9 in Camp Pendleton, California, where he was based as a United States Marine.

In addition, kicker Kole Ramage, who is committed to play baseball at Arkansas, was named the district’s Special Teams Player of the Year. MORE THAN 150 DRAGONS TO PARTICIPATE IN 2017 ODYSSEY OF THE MIND After sending nine teams to the World Finals at Iowa State University last year, the Carroll ISD Odyssey of the Mind program looks to top its strongest performance of any district in Texas as it gears up for the 2017 season. Another proud Dragon tradition, the nonprofit organization teaches students problem-solving skills. An estimated 22 teams will form to start the year off, including 10 returning squads from last year. The first big competition is the North Texas region tournament held at Carroll High School on February 25. The full problem sets have been released by the National Odyssey of the Mind program. Carroll teams are expected to compete in all five problem types: vehicular, technical, classics, structural and performance.

FRESH IDEAS IN BLOOM AT SOUTHLAKE GARDEN CLUB CA Scott, a Dallas Master Gardener, was the special guest at Southlake Garden Club’s November meeting. Her presentation, Back Yard Florist, inspired the club to use flowers and plants in their own yards to create unique arrangements. She made several beautiful arrangements during her presentation using flowerpots and some unusual containers found around her home.
YOUNG DRAGONS OPENED MOONLIGHT CAFÉ TO CELEBRATE SUPERMOON The brightest moon in almost 69 years shone down on Southlake last fall. This supermoon, as it was called, gave two young Dragons a bright idea: Turn it into an entrepreneurial opportunity. Addison Pape and Lucy Dugger, both age nine, brainstormed the idea to sell moon pies to celebrate the supermoon. They opened Moonpie Café, similar to a lemonade stand, on their street in Southlake’s Lonesome Dove community. The girls sold moon pies to neighbors and friends for a buck a piece, earning some nice spending money. Forecasters say the moon won’t look as big and bright until 2034.

DFW AIRPORT TO RECEIVE WORLD’S FIRST AIRPORT EMERGENCY ROOM Weary travelers, take heart: DFW Airport will soon have a freestanding emergency center and urgent care facility. Frisco-based Code 3 Emergency Partners received approval from the Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) International Airport Board to begin construction on 1.43 acres of land in the DFW Airport Southgate Plaza Development, scheduled to open fall 2017. At the same time, Code 3 will also begin construction of an urgent care facility and pharmacy located within DFW International Terminal D, slated to open in mid to late 2017. The 8,125-square-foot facility will house a full-service emergency room including observation rooms for short-term observation admissions and a separate urgent care facility. The emergency room will be fully equipped with a CT scanner, ultrasound, x-ray, laboratory and pharmacy. The concept will be the first of its kind on an airport property in the world. REDROCK CANYON GRILL RANG IN THE HOLIDAYS WITH CEF DONATION Redrock Canyon Grill commemorated its first holiday season in Southlake by donating 10 percent of food sales in December to the Carroll Education Foundation (CEF). The restaurant, known for it’s haciendastyle and scratch-made cuisine, is located in the Kimball Oaks Center. “We have been a part of the Southlake community since opening in April 2016, and we want to show our commitment to this area and the things that our guests care about,” said Kelli Grimes, proprietor of the Southlake location.
SPIN! HOSTED SPIRIT NITE FOR SOUTHLAKE’S AGCMA In November, pizza seekers gathered at SPIN! Neapolitan Pizza for some good eats and goodwill. As part of a Spirit Nite, SPIN! donated 15 percent of sales to Abundant Grace Christian Montessori Academy (AGCMA). The evening raised nearly $300 for the only Christian Montessori program in the Southlake area. The funds will be put towards a library addition for the school, which recently completed renovations to create a charming and unique education environment.

FLYKIDS YOGA Empowering Kids One Breath at a Time

enerations have long recognized the benefits of yoga: It builds strength of both mind and body, improves control of breath, can enhance athletic performance and protect the body from injury. Those who practice yoga swear by the results in both the way they look and how they feel. Now your children can establish a foundation of yoga that will serve them well throughout their lifetime. FlyKids Yoga in Southlake is the first studio in the North Texas area devoted to providing yoga classes for all kids, from toddlers to teens, with specific classes geared toward the unique needs of each child. Owner Danielle Vaughn says that operating a yoga studio specifically designed for kids only made sense. “After noticing big changes in my children once they began a yoga practice, it was a natural progression to begin thinking about ways yoga can benefit all children, not just my own,” she says. “I began thinking about how to translate yoga to all kids. In today’s fast-paced society, kids deal with high anxiety and stress. I wanted to help make the mind/body connection for kids, but not in just a 60-minute asana (yoga pose) class. For the younger kids, we incorporate interactive games and imagination while learning about intentional breathing with games and emotional and physical awareness. The older kids’ and teens’ classes focus more on the practice of yoga with peer interaction and camaraderie.”

FlyKids Yoga, located in The Villages of Timmaron, offers classes for parents and their babies, toddlers, kids, tweens, teens and even prenatal classes for pregnant moms. In addition, specially focused classes help target specific kids’ needs such as Yoga for Athletes, Aerial Yoga, Meditation on the Fly, Special Needs Yoga and Family Yoga. Vaughn says what makes FlyKids Yoga so special is the staff. All instructors have been certified to teach yoga and trained specifically to teach children and teens and are passionate about their work.
A Different Way to Exercise FlyKids Yoga is more than stretching muscles and holding poses. “It’s important to us to teach each child ways to deal with life, not just to become more flexible,” says Vaughn. “We teach them that they are not their emotions; it’s just what they are feeling at the time. Yoga helps children understand the world in a different way.” Although classes are geared to improve flexibility, build strength, teach asanas and instill breath control, it’s also important to Vaughn that kids are able to recognize other benefits of yoga. Vaughn, who is also a life coach, teaches children peaceful ways to resolve conflict, handle stress and anxiety, and use their imaginations. This is evident in the Peace Points Reward Program offered to members. “We wanted to create a program that rewards children for their good character, not only their accomplishments, so we created the Peace Points Reward Program, which keeps track of good deeds and acts of kindness in the studio and within the community,” says Vaughn. The kids get rewarded after attaining a certain number of Peace Points. “As a parent myself,” Vaughn says, “the more avenues my children have for feeling a sense of community and togetherness, the better. We’re reinforcing to our students that this world is here for them to experience and enjoy, and that what we put into the world will come right back to us.” Combining physical exercise with teachings that assist children in focusing their intentions and teaching how to make choices leads to a well-rounded child. “Life is competitive,” Vaughn says. “Teenagers, we’ve found, need coping skills in dealing with the expectations placed on them. Teaching them to meditate and to control their breath is a great way to help them understand and control their reactions to stress.” Not all children learn the same way, but by combining movement with games, breath control and meditation, all kids can benefit in their own unique way. “We also offer classes for children with autism or other special needs,” says Vaughn. “We take a fun-filled approach to support the physical, mental and emotional needs of each child.” “Watching kids and teens make huge strides with a regular yoga practice is awe-inspiring, " Vaughn says. "And I'm one lucky girl because I get to witness it firsthand. That's the most rewarding part of all.”

W
hen Kimberly Giordano’s friend invited her to an Orangetheory Fitness studio recently, she was hesitant to give the workout a try. “I’ve never been able to lose weight on exercise alone,” Giordano says. “I’ve never seen results from going to the gym.” It seems Giordano is not alone in her discovery. The majority of health-minded adults seek new ways to achieve their fitness goals. In fact, 70 percent of the 2,300 new health club facilities that opened in 2015 were boutiques and studios, according to the 2016 U.S. Industry Report from The International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association. Perhaps ahead of the trend, Yong Swearengin opened SunstoneFIT in Southlake nine years ago. Her studio offers personalized fitness for the mind and body in a variety of disciplines, including yoga, Pilates, barre and cycling, among others. Although the Southlake studio has showed steady numbers as of late, Swearengin says location plays a key role in this awakening trend. “A boutique fitness studio is going to work if the concentration of people live close by,” Swearengin says. “Some people will drive for a workout, but I don’t think a lot of people do that. They want it to be a blip in their daily routine—go in, get it done and come out.” The studio and boutique fitness movement may not be a new trend, but as the numbers suggest, this exercise arena is certainly re-experiencing growth. Here in North Texas, residents of suburban cities such as Southlake, Keller and Flower Mound have seen quite a few boutique fitness studios open up shop within the past few years. Some are national or international franchises, such as Orangetheory Fitness in Southlake and Coppell plus CycleBar and Pure Barre in Southlake and Flower Mound. Other fitness boutiques

and studios in the area were started by local entrepreneurs with a vision to help people live healthier lives in a specialized way, such as ZYN22 Southlake and NexGen Fitness Southlake.
REINVIGORATING THE FITNESS ARENA Staying healthy has become more than just purchasing a monthly membership and crossing your fingers you’ll get up in the morning to go work out. Self-motivation is hard. But these fitness studios and boutiques are working to change that mindset with pay-as-you-go models. Consider the CycleBar franchise, for example. The studio, which opened in Southlake last August, offers three core cycle classes along with a beginner’s intro class. The classic ride combines competition, choreography and classic elements of cycle in a 50-minute timeframe. The 50-minute connect ride focuses more on connecting with the bike and less on stats and competition. And finally, the performance ride, for clients who prefer a more challenging workout, includes stats and competition. Studios like CycleBar are indeed customized for a more authentic experience, but this experience isn’t limited to indoor cycling, yoga and barre. What you might think of as a typical “big box” gym experience can be had on a smaller level too, which fits right into the studio and boutique trend. 30 • JAN 17
NexGen Fitness founder and owner Bryan Whatley opened his studio’s Southlake location in 2014. Since then, NexGen has expanded to seven other locations in North Texas including Flower Mound and Colleyville. Each NexGen studio has two or three private suites where instructors provide one-on-one training. Each customized session lasts 45 minutes. “This unique model allows our trainers to know exactly how to motivate each individual client,” Whatley says. It’s no doubt that trainers and instructors play an important role in the success of a fitness studio. However, the bonds formed between clients also have an effect on individual performance. Before attending their first class at ZYN22, for example, many new clients don’t know their cycling neighbor. But after sweating it out together, day after day and week after week, clients inevitably become friends. “It doesn’t seem like that long ago that everyone went to the gym and group fitness classes,” says Melissa Page, co-founder and CEO of ZYN22. “But people feel part of something more as a client of our studio. They become teammates. It is something bigger than just cycling, and you don’t get that in a gym.” ZYN22 is an indoor cycling studio founded by Melissa and her husband, Mark. The first ZYN22 studio opened in Fort Worth in January 2015, and the Southlake studio opened in May 2016. “We run 45 classes each week in our Southlake location—seven classes each day during the week and five each day of the weekend,” she says. “ZYNthusiasts” can also ride at two Dallas locations. “We believe people will want to access their fitness programs on an a la carte basis going forward, with little to no commitments, unlike in the typical gym model,” says Page. “That’s what we do at ZYN, and other boutique fitness methods are finding the same SouthlakeStyle.com

No one wants to do the same thing every day, so there’s room for many of us, as long as your fitness program is deemed by the consumer to be worth it.” Katie Hamilton, a client of ZYN22 in Southlake, believes the boutique fitness trend is here to stay. “All my friends, even those in other locales, go to boutique-style fitness studios,” she says. “You are held accountable, but you also enjoy the camaraderie of people who have the same goals as you and who motivate and encourage you.” Giordano, speaking about her experience at Orangetheory Fitness, says having a gym partner is good in theory, but it can be hard coordinating a time to work out together. “At places such as Orangetheory, there are set times to work out. And then you just start meeting people there. They become like a little family—a little fitness family,” she says. Whether individuals decide to pick a class at various studios to attend off and on during the week or they attend one studio daily, one thing is certain: They have plenty of choices. he waiting room at Cerebrum Health Center, a leading integrative medical facility for brain health treatment and rehabilitation, is not unlike most other doctor’s office waiting areas. There are a few comfortable seating areas and plenty of magazines to read while you wait. But there’s another waiting room, just beyond the front, which is reserved for veterans seeking treatment for traumatic brain injuries or posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In this waiting room, lined with comfortable leather chairs, the walls are filled with handwritten sentiments, testimonials and words of encouragement from the many veterans who have come through these doors. There, in addition to seeing “Semper Fi” scrawled on the walls, you see notes such as one that says, “Never above you, never below you, always beside you,” or one that lauds, “Before brain treatment, Zac sucked at life. After treatment… not as much.” Between 11 to 20 percent of veterans will experience PTSD, according to the National Center for PTSD. Since there are about 2.7 million veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, the numbers of those with PTSD are significant. And those numbers don’t reflect veterans of

the Vietnam War, an estimated 15 percent of whom were still afflicted with the disorder more than a decade after the war ended. For these veterans, Cerebrum hopes to help at its innovative center. And they treat veterans free of charge. “We want to give loving service to people who have helped us,” says Dr. Cagan Randall, one of the clinicians at Cerebrum. The list of symptoms associated with traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder is staggering, and Randall has seen enough of these patients to be able to recount the lengthy list by heart. “Sleeplessness, rage, emotional trauma, problems concentrating, problems with comprehension, balance and coordination issues, confusion and having less of an ability to heal any more,” he says. Some, he notes, are even afflicted with hormonal deficiencies, meaning, “you’ll see a 20-year-old in the same hormonal stage as an 80-year-old.” A HIGH-PROFILE JOURNEY TO RECOVERY Randall specializes in Functional Neurology (FN) and the treatment of traumatic brain injuries, Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia and sports- and PTSD-related concussions. Which is how he came to be at the other end of a call that changed the course of his life and changed the life of Marcus Luttrell. If the name Marcus Luttrell doesn’t ring a bell at first, you will almost certainly recall his story—one immortalized in a book and on the big screen. Luttrell was a United States Navy SEAL who, in 2005, was the lone survivor of an attack against the Taliban 45 35

in which three members of his SEAL team were attacked and killed, as well as all on board a SEAL Team 10 helicopter sent in to rescue him. After being medically discharged from the Navy in 2007, Luttrell wrote the bestseller, Lone Survivor about the experience. The book was adapted into a 2013 film starring Mark Wahlberg as Luttrell. While the book and the movie brought him success and, perhaps, fame, it would be naive to assume that someone who experienced what Luttrell went through would come home unscathed. And that’s why one day Randall received a call from former Texas governor Rick Perry, who had heard about Randall and the center through another vet who had visited Cerebrum. Since his days as governor, Perry, a former Air Force pilot, has been an outspoken advocate for veterans’ rights and is a close friend of Luttrell. Governor Perry asked Randall if he had ever heard of Marcus Luttrell. “I didn’t know him,” Randall admits. “I lead a pretty boring life.” Through Perry’s call, Luttrell came into the center to meet with Randall and begin Cerebrum’s program. As with other patients, Luttrell was given a series of tests and health exams to assess his condition and determine and begin his individualized plan of treatment. “We helped him sleep; got him out of pain,” says Randall. “Within three days, he was sleeping eight hours again. And we didn’t use sleep medications.” Now, Luttrell and Randall have become good friends, and Luttrell has become both a proponent of the program and of helping other veterans, many of whom come home from combat having suffered some form of traumatic brain injury, which makes it difficult to function normally, to sleep, to be pain free, to have their health. “Once my head got fixed, everything else kind of fell in line,” Luttrell says. The product, he says, “speaks for itself.” “It all stems from the brain injury, so if you go in and fix the brain, the other stuff goes away,” says Luttrell. Now, Luttrell is involved with the center’s InvisibleVet program, helping raise awareness for vets with traumatic brain injuries. 46 • JAN 17
“For whatever reason, he was not taken, and he has to go forward,” says Randall. “And now, I’ve never seen anyone more dedicated to a cause than him,” he says of Luttrell’s commitment to helping veterans. “He has the tenacity to never quit, whether it’s for his own recovery or helping some of his brothers who have been affected with traumatic brain injury.” SPECIALIZED HEALING FOR THE WHOLE PERSON Cerebrum’s reach extends beyond veterans dealing with traumatic brain injuries and PTSD. “Yes, we treat vets, but we also treat autism, dyslexia, ADHD, dementia and stroke patients who have lost functional ability,” says Jimmy Matthews, president and CEO of the company. “There are so many times people can’t find help with traditional medicine,” he says. And that’s where Cerebrum’s not-sotraditional methods come into play. The clinic provides holistic, innovative and individualized treatment programs with the goal of improving the quality of life for patients suffering from degeneration and injury of the brain and central nervous system. Patients who come into Cerebrum go through three major tests to determine the extent of their brain damage or disorders. These tests provide the clinicians with a unique picture of each patient and determine the individualized treatment he or she will receive. “There is no blanket protocol,” says Randall. “Every patient is different and every patient needs a unique plan of treatment.” One piece of equipment used for treatment by the center is the futuristic-looking OVARD (off vertical access rotation device), a chair that rotates 360 degrees and is used for vestibular rehabilitation by activating different parts of the brain. “We focus on what we can do to activate specific parts of the brain,” says Dr. Paul Shrogin, Cerebrum’s director of operations. He explains that with some injuries, such as stroke, there is a permanent loss of neurons. But with other injuries sometimes groups of neurons simply change. “It’s our goal to properly rehab those systems,” he says. Diet and nutrition also play a large part in a patient’s recovery plan. “It’s like the old adage, ‘garbage in, garbage out,’” says Randall. “While some people can burn carbohydrates, some cannot. And if you can’t burn carbs effectively, what you’re doing to your brain is creating inflammation. So we pay close attention to helping decrease inflammation through diet and nutrition.” Changes to one’s diet and nutrition require a lifestyle change, not just a visit to the clinic, which has meant that Cerebrum not only assesses patients and devises a plan of action, but also SouthlakeStyle.com
follows up with patients after they leave, getting them back on track if needed. With such a holistic approach, it’s no wonder the center has attracted not just vets, but patients from the world of sports, including Olympic athletes and stars from the NFL, MLB, NHL and UFC. Sometimes, says Shrogin, patients come in just for physical maintenance. “We’ve treated athletes because they’re having trouble focusing on the ball, and we’ve had athletes come in prophylactically, for a tune-up,” he says. The physicians have also treated celebrities outside the world of sports. Talk-show host and pundit Glenn Beck, who considers himself a friend of Luttrell, learned about the center from Luttrell and visited it to treat a brain-related ailment that traditional medicine was not healing. He says he went to Cerebrum “after getting to a point where I really wasn’t able to work anymore.” “When I first sat down and talked to the doctors they told me, ‘We want you to know they’re doing stuff here that’s very unconventional, very different, and a lot of people disagree with it,’” he says. But having previously seen 15 doctors, Beck was ready for something unconventional. The treatment worked. “In just a few short weeks, they put me back to where I needed to be,” he said at a recent fundraiser benefitting vets. Now Beck is convinced that the center is just what America’s veterans need. Beck says he hopes the center is able to “get our veterans so they’re functioning again,” just as the center did for him and continues to do for others. “I’ve seen people without hope all of the sudden be revitalized again,” he says. But while famous patients such as Beck and Luttrell talk about how the center has helped them and is helping our veterans, Randall is getting something in return as he sees patients go from hopeless to healed. In particular, Randall was impacted by his relationship with Luttrell. In the process of treating Luttrell, Randall became good friends with him. The two talk regularly, hang out and hunt together. Spending time together, Randall got to know Luttrell personally, and saw firsthand how he has not only been healed but also uplifted. “He helped me become a better American, to know and love my country,” says Randall, fighting back emotions. “He taught me resilience. I’m a better dad because of him; I know how to love my wife better. I’m thankful every day that I know him. here’s Tex-Mex and then there’s French-Mex, south-of-the-border fare with a straight-out-of-Paris influence. If it’s hard to wrap your head around this food fusion, just plan a trip to Madrina. The swanky eatery in Highland Park boasts a menu that’s refreshingly different: elegant Mexican dishes with French accents. If you’re craving chips and salsa, this isn’t the place for you. Madrina has received accolades such as D Magazine’s Restaurant of the Year and has been hailed as one of the “10 Sexiest Restaurants in Dallas-Fort Worth” by Zagat. We can certainly understand why. With traditional French cooking techniques that flirt
with irresistible Mexican flavors, it’s a recipe for a captivating evening—or at least an unforgettable meal. “We like to blur the line between things that are traditionally French and traditionally Mexican,” says David Fingerman, executive chef. “Most modern kitchens take root in French technique, but we like to play with how we can apply that to modern Mexican flavors and vice versa.” With Fingerman at the helm in the kitchen, Madrina turns out a procession of dishes that is refined and full of flavor without packing the heat of many Mexican favorites. Standout dishes include the Tacos de Chivo (braised goat, avocado, pasilla, parsnips and baby greens) and the Enfrijolada (duck confit, cilantro tortilla,

serrano chile, black bean puree and queso fresco). Regulars never miss the Wild Setas (Spanish for mushrooms), a nest of fried hen-of-the-woods, royal trumpet and beech mushrooms set atop a cilantro-scented poblano sauce. The dish is served with warm, handmade corn tortillas for a one-of-akind taco experience. Fingerman’s personal favorite menu item, the Quail Gordita, happens to be a flavor-packed example of French-Mex fare. Envision lightly battered quail stuffed with chorizo and queso Oaxaca on a bed of incredible purple hulls. “It’s a twist on a traditional dish that has a Texas feel,” he says. “It’s a great-looking dish with a down-home vibe that is just really unique. I’m a huge fan.” Whether it’s a dish on the Sunday brunch or dinner menu, you can count on it being original, fresh and inspired. Fingerman has made it a personal passion to push the envelope and offer up inventive tastes that bridge the culinary worlds. “I’m always looking at how we can challenge ourselves,” Fingerman says. “Working with seasonal ingredients is a big part of our inspiration. Different foods are available at different times of the year, so we always aim to reflect that in the menu. Seasonal changes keep variety in our guests’ mouths and keep our cooks from becoming complacent.” The ingredients at Madrina are also locally sourced, so you can rest assured that the Beef Tartare, Filet Au Poivre and even the Gateau Noir on the dessert menu are made from ingredients as nearby as possible. The farm-to-table trend is one of Fingerman’s favorite culinary movements. “It’s important to know where your food comes from,” he says. “I take advantage of every chance I get to work with a local product from a farmer I believe in.” Sophisticated French-Mex doesn’t end at the plate; Madrina’s bar, which features 120 bottles of wine, separates cocktails into French and Mexican-inspired categories. The diverse drink menu features a handpicked selection of agave-distilled spirits such as mezcal tequila from Mexico and aperitifs from France. For those wanting a French-inspired beverage, we suggest the Jack Rose, a handcrafted blend of apple brandy, house grenadine and lemon juice. And for a Mexican-influenced cocktail, we like the Daisy, a mix of Blanco tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice and doctored agave. If a creative cocktail is how you start your meal, end your meal at Madrina with the Horchata Pot-Au-Crème. It’s the French classic deliciously reimagined with 24-hour sweet rice milk, toasted almonds and piloncillo. Madrina’s churros are another reason to save room for something sweet. They’re made with hazelnut sugar, vanilla cream and spiced cocoa for a truly French-Mex dessert. COZY KEEPSAKES JENNIFER BAKER’S T-SHIRT QUILTS BECOME LASTING TREASURES FOR DRAGON FANS
Jennifer Baker, a retired special education teacher at Carroll Senior High, has long had a knack with a needle and thread; she’s been sewing for 45 years. Now, she’s sharing her creative skills with the community through her custom T-shirt quilts—school spirit items you can display, give as gifts and most definitely snuggle. To anyone with stacks of old Dragon T-shirts you don’t dare part with, imagine them repurposed into a one-of-a-kind keepsake quilt. Why do you enjoy making T-shirt quilts? I like having an idea of what I want to make and then seeing it come together, bit by bit. This project is especially fun because I am creating something special and meaningful. Hopefully [each quilt] will be treasured for many years. Tell us a little about the creative process. I begin by cutting the squares and working on a layout. I pin and sew each row of squares together, then sew the rows together. After ironing the seams out, I carefully lay the whole thing on top of the fabric that serves as the back of the quilt and pin it. I cut, sew and iron the binding that goes around the outside. The last step is to use embroidery floss to tack and knot each corner of the squares to hold all the layers together in the middle of the quilt. Then it’s ready to be reunited with the owner! How many T-shirts are needed? And how long does it take to create a quilt? Thirty shirts make a five-by-six-foot size. Twenty shirts make a four-by-five-foot size. Both are good sizes for a couch. It takes about 18 to 20 hours for a quilt made from 30 shirts. What’s the most challenging part of the process? The trickiest part is making sure the squares meet exactly at each corner. It requires lots of pins. Finishing the binding by hand is challenging because it takes so long and I get eager to return it to the owner. Have you made a quilt that was especially meaningful? My first quilt, for myself, which is made from some of my shirts from my 18

years at Carroll. I loved working at the senior high. All these shirts hold a special meaning and bring back wonderful memories. Why do people most often order your quilts? I have many people who want them for Christmas or graduation presents. Mostly they are using school and/or sports shirts, college shirts and shirts from traveling. One person is planning to make a quilt for her dad’s birthday out of shirts from his business. Your post lit up the Southlake Moms’ Facebook page last year. How did it feel to see such a huge interest from the community? It was crazy! I posted it on my personal Facebook page first and got a lot of encouragement to make the quilts for others. When I posted on the Southlake Moms’ page, I was surprised that it got so big, but excited and flattered with the response. How do you handle the overwhelming response? I am thankful and appreciative for everyone’s positive comments and interest! I take a lot of pride in doing the job right. I enjoy seeing my work done well and do not like rushing a job or taking shortcuts. This is a hobby of mine that I very much enjoy, but because it is something I want to keep part-time, the number of quilts I can do is limited. Want your own Dragon T-shirt quilt?
