the art of health From nutritional labels to electronic medical records and wearable tech, the plethora of data has healthcare professionals, congress and the lay public utterly perplexed about the best ways for Americans to stay healthy and out of the hospital. If you’re like me you’re probably staring down 2018 with a dose of blurryeyed confusion (and perhaps elevated cholesterol). All I do know is the art of staying healthy has leaped over Tony Little’s FreeStyle Gazelle™ and is on the cusp of an LED-lit future. Sure, I have a fitness watch, but I’m afraid I’m still more eliptical than SKILLMILL (see page 46). Trying to get our heads around it all, we put together a panel of three Southlake area hospital presidents whose decades of experience helped shed light into a variety of health related topics. What I found most interesting about our panel on The State of Local Healthcare is the increased roles tomorrow’s patients will take in prioritizing and monitoring their own health and fitness. And whenever people are ready to make health and fitness a priority Larry North’s doors will be open across the Metroplex. This month we sat down, albeit briefly, with the hyper-energetic gym owner, trainer, author, speaker, radio host and overall fitness icon. For 30 years and counting, North’s refreshingly simple advice, “Eat clean and move your body,” is a nice reprieve for these complicated times. If only health insurance could be so simple.

itness and health trends come and go. One day you’re doing step aerobics to pop hits and the next you’re doing curls in a CrossFit class. So it’s a real testament to both his fitness principles and his business prowess that Larry North is celebrating more than 30 years of being DFW’s leader in the fitness world. The affable North, still fit and muscular in his mid-50s, not only owns a nearly 30-year-old eponymous chain of health clubs around the Metroplex—including one in Westlake’s Solana development—but also has been hosting a radio show for more than 30 years. He’s penned bestselling books on living fit and even once hosted an infomercial that generated more than $150 million in revenue. But he’s not celebrating three decades of success, nor did he reach this many years of success, by resting on his laurels. “I never want to hear someone say, ‘I’m doing the best I can,’” says North. “You can always be better. You can be kinder, nicer, more caring. You can always eat cleaner, be more thoughtful.”

F U E L E D B Y F A M I LY In a way, North has his dad to thank for this drive and ambition. But Irv North certainly didn’t model this behavior. Instead, the younger North’s strength and mental fortitude developed from a tumultuous early childhood that included 10 different schools in four different states and ultimately a cross-country move to escape Irv. Born in New York to Irv North and mom, Beverly, North had a childhood that was anything but idyllic. His father was a Brooklyn mobster, gambler and con artist. When North was 15 and his twin brothers were 5, Beverly took the kids and left town to get away from her increasingly abusive husband. They headed first to Las Vegas, from which Irv had been banned, figuring it would be a guarantee that Irv wouldn’t follow. But Sin City wasn’t the kind of place she wanted to raise her boys, so they turned around to backtrack toward Houston. Beverly figured that Texas—which had no gambling—would hold little appeal to Irv. Their car broke down in Richardson, Texas, though, and since their funds were quickly dwindling, Beverly decided to stay put. They found a motel in town until Beverly could get a job to support the family of four. 20 • JAN 18

North, though just 15, got a job helping to build pools so that he could contribute. “We’ve lived in not-so-good places, but we went to good schools and had a roof over our heads,” North says of his teen years in Texas. “I never felt without.” North’s dad not only drove the family away from the East Coast but also he, in a sense, was the driving force behind North getting involved in fitness. “I got into [working out] at an early age,” North says. “I wanted to build my body up, to make sure I was big enough to protect my mom.” SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE
H O W I T A L L S TA R T E D He started working out at Doug’s Gym in downtown Dallas when he was in his 20s, which he fit into long days that included selling shoes at Neiman Marcus during the day and acting as a bouncer for bars at night. (North admits that he has never, ever been unwilling to work hard.) His epiphany came while watching the 1980s TV show “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.” “I saw Robin Leach interviewing a rich person who had a personal trainer and I thought to myself, ‘I can do that,’” North recalls. His first client, albeit a non-paying client, was a guy who had walked into a near-empty gym at 4 a.m., when North was working out, then quickly walked back out. North saw the man, who weighed around 400 pounds, and felt compelled to seek him out and ask him why he left the gym. North says the man’s response was that it was hopeless, why bother? But North wouldn’t have it. “I know what hopeless feels like,” North told the man. He made him a deal: Come to the gym every morning and North would train him. Within a year, the man had lost a couple hundred pounds and North had found his true calling. “I realized I had a God-given gift, that I had the ability to inspire people,” North says. He found success in training others one-on-one, but knew he could get his message of hope and health to many more people. His radio show came next, not because someone came looking for him, but because he called the radio station and pitched his idea. He got five minutes with the program director to make his case. Afterwards, “I got a voice mail from him saying ‘The good news is we’re giving you your own show. The not-so-good news is that it’s at 7 a.m. on Sunday mornings.’” Over time, he built a faithful audience (some current listeners, in fact, have been listening to his show since the early days) and got a better time slot. Buoyed by the success of his radio show, North turned to books next, writing Get Fit. Thirteen of 14 publishers rejected it, but ultimately, the book spent 156 weeks on the local bestseller list. This led to more books, which combined with the radio show, the infomercial and the clubs he had started to open around town, turned North into a fitness celebrity—and a wealthy man. 3 TI PS FO R B EI N G YO U R B EST SELF 1. EAT CLEAN At least, do it most of the time. North recommends trying to continually extend the periods during which you eat clean, healthy food. His clean food list includes lean protein, fibrous vegetables and ample healthy fats, with just a moderate amount of complex carbohydrates. Even a fitness guru such as North admits that staying in great physical shape is 90 percent nutrition. 2. MOVE YOUR BODY CONSISTENTLY North recommends exercising for 45 to 60 minutes, every other day or four days a week. North’s own routine includes an hour of moderate cardio work, such as walking on the treadmill, each morning from 5 to 6 a.m. followed by another hour of strength training. 3. STAY HORMONALLY OPTIMAL North is so passionate about hormonal wellness that he became a spokesperson for Dallas-based BioTE Medical, which offers hormone replacement therapy. North feels that optimizing hormones help give a person increased strength and energy, mental clarity and age-related disease prevention.

He could have slowed down, cashed out or sold the business to leave the heavy lifting to someone else. But complacency isn’t in North’s being. Which is why, more than 30 years after he got his start in this industry, he is busy opening the doors to a new Larry North Fitness facility: a modern, updated space in Preston Center complete with a graffiti mural and a group fitness room tucked behind glass garage doors. At his side is his wife, Brenda, to whom he has been married for 12 years and who helps keep North grounded. Brenda is a meditation expert, Reiki master and massage therapist, the perfect complement to the high energy and driven North. He now meditates every day and is, in his words, a lot mellower than he was in his 20s. They also push each other to eat clean and stay healthy. “We pinkie swear to each other that we aren’t gong to overindulge,” North says. In fact, these days North’s diet has changed, evolving not so much with any diet trends but rather with what someone his age needs, or needs less of. “I’m not as obsessed with eating eight meals a day,” North says. Instead, he focuses on “clean eating,” which includes lean proteins, fibrous vegetables and healthy fats. He says he has reduced his intake of complex carbohydrates significantly. He also, as one might guess, works out every day, from 5 a.m. until 7 a.m. His workout involves walking on the treadmill for 45 to 60 minutes at a medium to slow place and then lifting weights for the second hour. Unlike some of the fitness trends that have come and gone, his workout hasn’t changed much over the years. Still, he’s impressed by the number of choices people have today when it comes to fitness, with an endless array of classes such as cycling, yoga, Cross Fit and more. “It’s more fun to exercise now,” North admits. “Even workout clothes are more fun today.” North’s days are also filled with business obligations, including his radio show, chain of clubs, work with BioTE Medical as a spokesperson. He and his wife also spearhead the Optimal Living Initiative—which offers speakers and advisers on health awareness issues such as nutrition and fitness, meditation and stress management—for Satori Capital, a Fort Worth-based private equity firm. And he continually makes it a priority to connect with other people. Just like he connected with his first personal training client and just like he connected with program manager to get his own radio show. It’s no wonder North attributes the ongoing success of his clubs to offering something a little more than do the myriad competitors that come and go. North sums it up succinctly: “What makes us thrive is our culture. We care about people.”

LOCALS WILL LEARN THE IMPORTANCE OF VOTING AT UPCOMING CIVICS FORUM The League of Women Voters and Southlake resident Donna James-Harvey will host their “Why Vote” forum on January 30 to educate the public on non-partisan voting information. They want the community to understand how much the state and local government affected their daily lives, and they believe an education forum would bring clarity to the importance of showing up to vote in every election. TCU political science professor and event speaker Dr. Jim Riddlesperger will speak with locals about everything from how districts are formed to the timeline for getting your name on the ballot. WESTLAKE ACADEMY ADDS FOUR NEW NATIONAL MERIT COMMENDED SCHOLARS The prestigious school has four new National Merit Commended Scholars among their students. Of the 1.6 million students who took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last October, seniors John Luke Miller, Hunter Cochran, Tyler Simpson and Anand Singh were placed among the top 50,000 scorers in the 2018 competition. These students have gone on to receive a letter of commendation from the school and the NMSC as well as being honored by the Board of Trustees during their November monthly meeting. There have now been 28 scholars at Westlake Academy since 2010.
BASKETBALL SEASON STARTS WITH A SLAM DUNK AT DRAGON MADNESS BASKETBALL COMMUNITY NIGHT The Carroll Athletic Booster Association and the CSHS amped up the crowd with their first ever Dragon Madness Basketball Community Night on November 27. With the band in full swing, the cheerleaders pumping up the crowd and the basketball team introduced to roaring fans, it’s safe to say the season started out with a bang. The highlight of the evening was the school’s Celebrity Slam competition starring Lady Dragon assistant coach Whitney Long, CSHS Shawn Duhon, athletic director Darren Allman and varsity head coach Eric McDade. Games for the elementary kids, a silent auction benefiting all sports at Southlake Carroll and autographs from Dragon players rounded out the successful night of Dragon spirit.

SOUTHLAKE CROSS COUNTRY & TRACK CLUB COMPETE AT NIKE CROSS NATIONALS The top seven girls and boys teams from the Southlake Cross Country & Track Club competed at the 14th annual Nike Cross Nationals on December 2 in Portland, Oregon. The boys team finished 19th in the country while the girls finished 20th. Cate Tracht finished first for the Lady Dragons coming in 112th while Juan Arcila lead the boys team with his 107th finish. The teams qualified for the competition after the girls took home the South Region championship and the boys finished second in the Nike South Regionals in November. ENGEL & VOLKERS DONATES $83,000 TO ALZHEIMER’S ASSOCIATION Upon selling The Showhouse – an almost 8,000-squarefeet home in Southlake – Engel & Volkers donated the $83,000 commission from the sale to the Alzheimer’s Association. The Showhouse, presented by HGTV show host, Donna Moss. The home was opened to the public for tours, with proceeds from ticket sales directly benefiting the Alzheimer’s Association. Roxann Taylor owner and broker of Engel Völkers Dallas along with her entire team, marketed the home from May 2017 and hosted buyers in the home for showings until September 2017.

TWO EUBANKS STUDENTS WIN NATIONAL CONSTITUTING AMERICA CONTEST Last month, two Eubanks Intermediate School students, Gabriella Tommasi and Joshua Landgraf, were awarded as 2017 Best Middle School Song winners for their entries in a national Constituting America contest. Constituting America is a nonprofit organization that aims to educate students and adults alike about about the nonpartisan relevancy of the U.S. Constitution through multimedia. Founded by local actress Janine Turner, the nonprofit holds national contests, such as the 2017 “We The Future Contest,” won by the two Eubanks students. In this contest, students submit an original song that celebrates Constitutional rights. Both winners were awarded $1,000, a certificate and a trophy. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to participate in a mentor trip to Austin. As best song winners, Gabriella and Joshua will be mentored by song mentor, rapper and Christian music artist Moses Uvere. Constituting America will professionally record and promote their winning songs.

SOUTHLAKE TOWN SQUARE GIVES BACK AT TOYS FOR TOTS TOY DRIVE People showed a little extra Christmas spirit by stopping by Southlake Town Square’s 15th annual Toys for Tots Toy Drive on December 5. The community brought out new, unwrapped toys to help make other children’s holiday season a little more jolly. Santa even came out to support the community’s efforts to give back to those less fortunate. The event supported the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and their mission to spread cheer to all North Texas’ children.
APREX ARTS HOSTS ECHOS OF WONDER Dallas Symphony principal harpist Emily Levin performed seasonally inspired melodies at Aprex Arts League’s “Echos of Wonder” home concert event on December 10. Levin is well known for her classical tunes graduated from The Juilliard School and has since taken the music scene by storm with performances all across North America. She has been given honors like the Classical Recording Foundation’s 2017 Young Artist of the Year. Local patrons decked out in their best holiday attire as they listened to elegant music and enjoyed great food and drinks. The intimate evening was held at a Southlake patron’s home that was fully decorated for the festive season. CITY OF SOUTHLAKE KICKS OFF THE 2018 LIVEFITWELLNESS CHALLENGE Join the 2018 LiveFit Wellness Challenge to have your fittest, strongest and healthiest year yet! The City of Southlake will kick off the Wellness Challenge on January 13. Registration is free and opened on December 15. Participants will compete in daily challenges, track their steps, and have the opportunity to attend ‘lunch and learns,’ fitness classes, activities with Mayor Laura Hill and much more. Once registered, participants will receive a free t-shirt and win prizes as they accumulate points. SOUTHLAKE CARROLL WRAPS UP THEIR FOOTBALL SEASON DURING PLAYOFF RUN The Southlake Carroll football team finished out their season during the quarterfinal round of the Region I Class 6A playoffs. They traveled down south to go head-to-head with Waco Midway on December 9. While the Dragons did fight hard to put points on the scoreboard in the second half, their third quarter boost left them behind 42-28. The Panthers came into the game undefeated with a 13-0 track record. The Dragons ended their season with a 10-4 finish. This was the first time since 2014 that the Dragons played in regionals.

LOCAL ARTISTS PERFORM AT HOLIDAY EVENTS DURING STARS OF THE SEASON CONCERT TOUR Local singers, songwriters and recording artists joined together during the holiday season to bring about holiday cheer on the Stars of the Season concert tour. The Katie Karr Entertainment Group held auditions back in August 2017 to find the best talent in the area, and they hit the ground performing at local events. They sang original music alongside festive covers at the Southlake Tree Lighting, 30th Annual Dallas Holiday Parade and Six Flags Holiday in the Park. EIGHT SOUTHLAKE STUDENTS TO ADVANCE TO AREA BAND COMPETITION Last month, 49 Carroll Dragon Band students were selected into one of four Region 31 All-Region Bands after performing in the very competitive audition process. Region 31 encompasses UIL bands from Birdville ISD, Carroll ISD, Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD, Coppell ISD, Grapevine-Colleyville ISD and HurstEuless-Bedford ISD. In addition to the 49 students selected for an AllRegion Band, eight students placed at the very top of their sections, advancing to the Area competition on January 13th. This gives the eight an opportunity to be a Texas All-State member and perform at the Texas Music Educators Association convention in San Antonio in February. The Region 31 All-Region band clinics and concerts will take place the weekend of January 19th.

They came out on top taking home first place and the golden trophy. Last year, Southlake came in last, so it’s safe to say they made strides during 2017.

THE STATE OF LOCAL HEALTHCARE A PANEL DISCUSSION WITH AREA HOSPITAL PRESIDENTS

rom caring for our aging population to ensuring the affordability of healthcare to the masses, the rising costs and complexities of administering healthcare are among the nation’s biggest concerns. The general health of our overweight and aging population, advances in medical equipment, training and technology and the cost of prescription medicines have all played a role in the increasing costs of our collective well-being. In fact, recent estimates from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services show Americans spent over $3.2 trillion on healthcare in 2015. With estimated growth rates of 5.6 percent annually this means the average American will spend more than $10,000 this year on personal healthcare and that figure is widely expected to increase through the year 2025. According to a recent WalletHub study, the state of Texas ranks at the very bottom in the country when it comes to statewide access to healthcare. The research firm’s Best & Worst States for Health Care in 2017 ranked Texas 51st in access and 41st overall. The study, which included the District of Colombia, utilized 35 different measures of cost, accessibility and outcomes to determine their list. However, the Metroplex stands apart from many of the underserved areas of the Lone Star State with a reputable network of high-performing hospitals. According to US News and World Report five of the best 11 hospitals in the entire state are in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Closer to home, residents in and around Southlake enjoy access to an ever-expanding network of locally-based retail healthcare ranging from freestanding emergency rooms, health clinics and outpatient specialty hospitals. To help provide some insight on the state of healthcare on a national and local scale, we posed several questions to the presidents of three of the area’s top hospitals. The presidents of Texas Health Harris Hospital Southlake, Baylor Scott and White Grapevine and Methodist Southlake were kind enough to lend their opinions. Collectively these three presidents offer decades of industry experience and just as importantly, an understanding of what’s going on right in our own backyards. JAN 18 • 49
1. WHAT ARE THE OVERARCHING TRENDS THAT ARE TRANSFORMING THE U.S. HEALTHCARE MARKET? Steven R. Newton, President Baylor Scott & White: There are many trends of note today, including regulatory uncertainty, the rise of consumerism, the focus on “well care” in addition to “sick care,” and industry disruption by Amazon and mega mergers by surprising partners like the proposed CVS and Aetna deal. One of the most interesting trends affecting healthcare today is development of new technology that (1) helps consumers monitor and change their health and wellness behaviors, (2) helps patients have shorter and safer hospital stays, and (3) helps patients connect with doctors and other providers via computer and smart phone. Traci Bernard, President Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Southlake: Telemedicine/Telehealth services such as video-conferencing are becoming cost effective ways to complement local health services. It is particularly beneficial to those living in rural, regional and remote communities and requiring regular access to medical specialists. The payment landscape is shifting under the U.S. health care industry. Traditional fee-for-service payments are being replaced with a financial incentive framework that rewards for improved quality, outcomes and costs. This shift to valuebased reimbursement models creates a new paradigm in which care is delivered by an entire coordinated care community sharing in the responsibility. While the law directly impacts only Medicare payments today, it lays the groundwork and provides strong incentives for other payers to move in the same direction. John McGreevy, President Methodist Southlake Hospital: Without a doubt, the Affordable Care Act has brought a major transformation since the late 1980s. This has contributed to consolidation (mergers and acquisition) of healthcare in the United States between health systems and hospitals, drug companies, health plans, device manufactures and other healthcare entities. It is the general consensus that health systems and hospitals needed to become larger in order to effectively manage large populations through the exchanges and fewer health plans. 50 • JAN 18

2. IN TODAY’S HIGH-PRICED HEALTHCARE MARKET, HOW CAN HOSPITALS AND PHYSICIANS PROVIDE CONSUMERS WITH THE BEST POSSIBLE VALUE? SN: All of us must be committed to delivering health care at the lowest achievable cost and the highest quality. These goals go hand in hand if managed carefully. For example, it is essential that doctors and hospitals work together to provide care based on clinical evidence, collaborate to eliminate unnecessary services and reduce delays in care and other forms of waste, and become accountable for the outcomes of care. TB: As trends collide, they create challenges for the industry stakeholders as well as opportunities for innovation. There is a shift in the spectrum of care from hospitals to lower cost sites. Texas Health Resources is committed to wellness and preventative care; shifting disease management from reactive to preventative. We are committed to personalized care and shifting offerings from mass generalization to mass customization and precision. Finally, there is a shift on the management of the aging, chronic and end of life care. This requires a shift in focus from institutionalized based care to community-supported aging, and leveraging big data and personalizing to manage chronic conditions. SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM
JM: Improving access at the right place and the right time with the continued focus on quality, demonstrated through reporting of standards. Generally speaking, this will require the inclusion of the healthcare consumer for the purpose of making an informed decision. Idealistically, this will require steering patients away from hospitals, which is most costly for the healthcare consumer. The common practice today is to work with chronically ill patients through a healthcare navigator program to seek proactive management of such afflictions as diabetes, chronic pulmonary disease, heart disease and more. The continued collaboration between hospitals, physicians and insurance plans is required for this model to succeed. 3. HOW IS THE DELIVERY OF HEALTH CARE BY HOSPITALS GOING TO CHANGE OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS? SN: Hospitals will always have a vital role in the healthcare ecosystem. Caring for the critically ill and injured and those with advanced JAN 18 • 51
illnesses like cancer and heart disease will always require a team of highly-qualified experts to be ready and able 24 hours a day. Increasingly, though, many elective procedures that used to be done in the inpatient setting will be done as in an outpatient environment, as this can be safe and less costly thanks to innovation in care delivery. TB: The healthcare landscape has shifted, moving toward consumer centric care and overall population health management. Adapting to the needs and wants of the consumer (convenience, timeliness, quality) has created opportunities for improved coordination of care, which has led to increased quality and decreased cost. Additionally, we saw a retail health and wellness convergence amongst retail clinics, urgent care centers and the like, causing more of a collaboration between these two industries. JM: One constant about healthcare has been the change brought about by the federal government through regulations in Medicare and Medicaid. Hospitals tend to be driven by the enactment of rules and regulations governing the Medicare program. We have witnessed a paradigm shift with the proliferation of “retail” healthcare like freestanding emergency centers and ambulatory surgical centers. The “Amazonation” of driving the healthcare consumer to outpatient centers will continue for ease of access, resulting in further migration away from tertiary care health centers. Furthermore, health insurance companies are beginning to increase the scrutiny of healthcare costs through resisting the use of hospital-based services for their beneficiaries.

TB: There is also an increase in privately insured adults enrolling in Consumer Driven Health Plans (CDHP) with health savings accounts or other reimbursement arrangements. Others are also enrolling in high-deductible plans (HDHP) not linked to a health saving plan or a health reimbursement plan. It is common for employers to contribute to a Health Savings Account. Individuals in these types of plans were more likely to exhibit cost conscious behaviors. They are also remaining in these plans for extended periods of time. The viability of these plans has increased, as has employer contributions. Which ultimately points towards higher rates of wellness program availability and participation. 4. DESCRIBE HOW VALUE-BASED REIMBURSEMENT IS IMPACTING HOSPITALS: SN: Value-based reimbursement simply links payment to outcomes. Medicare, for example, withholds payment from hospitals if too many patients are readmitted within 30 days of discharge. In healthcare, like other industries, innovation often follows funding changes. As a result, new readmission avoidance programs are being implemented to help patients stay healthy after they leave the hospital. In this situation, everybody wins. TB: The payment landscape is shifting under the U.S. health care industry. With the volume-to-value transformation, traditional fee-for-service payments are being replaced with a financial incentive framework that rewards for improved quality, outcomes and costs. This shift to valuebased reimbursement models creates a new paradigm in which care is delivered by an entire coordinated care community sharing in the responsibility—and risk—of outcomes and costs, touching almost every part of health care delivery operations. JM: The impact has been minimal, as the costs to implement this system compared with the overall benefits to the consumer have not been in line. National healthcare sta-

tistics reflect that less than 20 percent of hospitals nationwide have a concerted-effort on value based payment models. Statistics aside, hospitals and health systems will continue to pursue the value-based models while experimenting with other alternatives. 5. HOW IS YOUR HOSPITAL INVESTING TO MEET THE NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY? SN: Our hospital has long been committed to listening to community needs and responding with exceptional programs. Recently, for instance, we became the only level 2 trauma program in Northeast Tarrant County and opened a new inpatient rehabilitation unit. Our community said “We want advanced trauma and rehab care right here in our neighborhood,” and we delivered. We are always looking for ways to reach more, do more, serve more. It’s who we are. TB: The specialty hospital model is part of the shift in care from the traditional hospital model to a lower-cost site. Our focus is on surgery and the necessary support services. With a focus on doing one thing, we are able to provide a high level of care and service more efficiently and effectively. We have been committed to investing in the latest technology to maintain our current service lines. Strategically, we continuously monitor the growing needs within our community, while responding by adapting appropriately. JM: Investments have been predominantly two-fold. One: retail healthcare centers, joint ventures with physicians, and innovative healthcare services that are mainstream in other industries; and two: major investment in Enterprise-wide electronic health records (EHR). They provide the hospital staff, physicians and other healthcare providers to practice medicine in an incredibly efficient manner through the electronic sharing of clinical records, which reduces the overall work effort. In addition, web-based portals allow patient access to their records for improved transparency.

It’s Not Hyperbole: Joe Hnizdo is the World’s Strongest Firefighter
L
ast August was a big month for local firefighter Joe Hnizdo. He traveled to Los Angeles for the World Police and Firefighter Games and to Houston as part the Texas Search and Rescue team in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. In Los Angeles, he lifted more weight than any firefighter in his division. In Houston, he saw sights that left a lasting impression.

“That was a totally different experience in my career to go through and do everything that we did and see everything that we saw down there,” he says of his Houston experience. That is just a glimpse at the multifaceted life of Hnizdo. He trains five days a week and is on a 4,000-calorie-perday diet. Power lifting is hard work, but it is not unlike his work with the Flower Mound Fire Department. “A lot of firefighters get into certain situations and you have to push past what you think is normal,” Hnizdo says. “Sometimes you’ve got to work harder than you think you can or learn to control your breathing better, and so that’s why I think a lot of us enjoy the gym so much because it’s that same kind of thing.”

He graduated from Bell High School and subsequently A&M University before going to fire school in Fort Worth. He now lives in Fort Worth with his wife of 11 years and three daughters – a 7 year old and twin 3 year olds. As for his day job, it meshes well with his passion for weight lifting. Jackson gives Hnizdo workout routines that he can do at his fire station. Of course, you can’t win an international competition without your coworkers noticing. Hnizdo says he has been subject to some playful jabs, but that overall, his fellow Flower Mound firefighters have been really supportive of his endeavors.

“They give me a hard time about it, but that’s what firemen do, we give each other a hard time about everything,” Hnizdo says. “The better it is, the more they’ll give you a hard time about it. If they’re not giving you a hard time, something’s wrong.”
Johnnie Jackson, renowned bodybuilder, trainer and owner of JOJ Fitness, helps Hnizdo push past “normal.” He says that the firefighter is obviously strong, but most importantly, he is teachable.
His best in competition was a 551 lbs. bench and 680 lbs. deadlift, but when you ask what his max is, he honestly doesn’t know. And to Hnizdo, that is perfectly fine. He believes, just as Jackson said, it’s not about the weight, it’s about how you lift it. His advice to anyone looking to lift is this:
“It’s more than just lifting stuff,” Jackson says. “People think that you have to look a certain way to lift weights, but you look a certain way because
“Don’t lift with your ego, lift with your brain. I can do more [weight] every single time, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to do it right.”

fter a cocktail napkin’s worth of research, Leonard Firestone and Troy Robertson realized they were on to something. Texas was the second-largest whiskey consuming state in the union, and if Tito’s handmade was any foreshadowing, it was clear the Lone Star State was thirsty for a whiskey brand to call its own. The year was 2010, the heyday of the local craft beer movement, and Tony Soprano’s single malt Sunday night tradition had firmly given way to Don Draper’s oldfashioned. The world, and by world we mean Texas, was deeply in love with whiskey. So too were Firestone and Robertson (F&R), and they set to work revitalizing a pre-prohibition warehouse just south of
downtown Fort Worth. The duo released its TX Blended Whiskey in June of 2012 and promptly brought “Best American Craft Whiskey” honors to Fort Worth. Bravado and big steaks met their perfect complement. The initial success of F&R’s blended whiskey gave the budding bourbon-aires exactly what they needed—time. Five-years time, in fact, for the yellow dent Texas corn, red winter wheat and their proprietary Texan pecan yeast strain to properly age. In December of 2016, hundreds braved the elements to wait in line at the Fort Worth distillery to be among the first to purchase a bottle of their long-anticipated TX Straight Bourbon. Many left cold, and unfortunately, empty-handed. Demand was already exceeding supply.

LOCALFLAVOR review The founders saw this coming and had already begun searching for a new home for an expanded distilling operation. What they found was a picturesque tract with views of the Fort Worth skyline – a mere five miles from the original distillery on Vickery Boulevard. And what they’ve built is nothing short of a Whiskey Wonderland. The upstart Texas distillery blended with Fort Worth tradition and assembled their new home on 112-acres of the former Glen Garden Country Club. Officially open for tours, private events—and yes, distilling— Whiskey Ranch now sits on the hallowed grounds where legends Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson once honed their golf games. The 18-hole course, which has been updated ever so slightly to artfully accommodate an immersive whiskey experience, is still functioning. The country’s only golf course situated on a working distillery will be open for private and charitable events—an example of the many ways the owners plan to maintain the distillery as a true Fort Worth destination. Upon arrival, guests are whisked past the security shed and led across manicured grounds to the Ranch House. The heart of the operation, the Ranch House brings together the warm elements of replica oak barrel walls, and cowhide chairs offset by gleaming metals and sealed concrete floors that immediately welcome visitors to this rustic yet modern environ. Private event guests or those enjoying one of the now daily public tours can—and should—partake in a tasting or signature drink at the Tavern. From there, make your way through the breezeway to enjoy the floor-to-ceiling tiered rock fireplace of the Oak Room which can accommodate up to 180 guests for any type of private gathering. Drink in hand, take a step outside to the wrap around back porch and enjoy views overlooking the golf course, Benders Lake and the expanse of the Forth Worth skyline to the North. The space is so peaceful it’s hard to believe you’re standing only a few hundred yards from a 45-feet-tall column still that can produce 40 barrels per day. That’s more than 12 times their previous Vickery Road production and enough to lay claim as the largest distillery this side of the Mississippi River. Opposite the golf course stands the non-descript expanse of the property’s first of five barrel barns. Each barrel barn can hold 20,000 barrels (1 barrel can age 240 bottles worth of bourbon) for approximately five years as the bourbon ages. The barn is not climate controlled as to take advantage of the true Texas weather during the aging process. The effects of the hot Texas climate after years of aging in oak barrels brings forth bold aromas of rich oak, caramel, cinnamon and allspice. The property and the tour comes back full circle to the gift shop where the TX Whiskey and Bourbon faithful can show their brand loyalty on anything from hats, shirts and drinkware to a wide variety of Texas-themed merchandise. In less than a decade’s time, Firestone and Robertson Distillery has built a reputation for smooth and sought-after whiskies in addition to not one but two distinct local landmarks. Both whiskies are available in Texas and in a growing number of states throughout the U.S.—but a trek to Whiskey Ranch is a must for any self-respecting bourbonite.

PARKS MANAGER KEEPS OUR COMMUNITY BEAUTIFUL, ONE MEDIAN AT A TIME
Y
ou may not know his name, but you definitely know his work. Southlake is known for its well-kept streets and properly maintained parks, so it’s no surprise that one of the city’s most loyal employees received recognition for his efforts. The Texas Recreation and Park Society (TRAPS) awarded the city’s parks manager Mike Reasoner “Parks Professional of the Year” for his dedication to his role, team and community at their awards luncheon in November. Reasoner’s commitment to building up the city deserves to be noticed.
I HAVE BEEN WITH THE CITY… for 15 years this coming January. I started out with the department by taking a position as parks supervisor. Our team has grown so much over the years. We had about eight people to start out with and now we’re at 28 people with three park supervisors. My day-to-day tasks involve going around and maintaining the parks, helping out the staff, driving around and covering the town and managing over the team with the supervisors. And as we grow, we keep getting better at what we do. THE PARKS DEPARTMENT… oversees maintenance and beautification of the Southlake parks system including neighborhood parks and community parks with fields for baseball, softball, soccer, lacrosse and flag football. The department also maintains landscape, irrigation, and mowing throughout the city including Town Square Parks, medians and right of ways. We also oversee various special projects throughout the year that help to improve the parks system and Southlake environment. PARKS ARE IMPORTANT… on many levels. Residents have a place to come outside to reconnect and enjoy everything from walking trails to playgrounds. In addition, sports complexes draw teams from all over the nation that support the city economically. I THINK THE PARKS IN SOUTHLAKE STAND OUT BECAUSE… they are well maintained and our department takes pride in keeping them up to a high standard. Also, Southlake strives to add and enhance the parks to accommodate all citizens’ needs.
WHEN I WON THE AWARD, I WAS… very surprised. It was something I was not expecting. I’m honored to accept the award on behalf of the Parks Department and to all the great staff that made it possible. They deserve all the credit for what we are able to do as a department. IT IS VERY REWARDING TO… serve with these passionate people and to help accomplish the best for them and the city. We work alongside individuals, groups and associations that together want the best for the community. All the different groups we work with are really passionate about what they do, so it makes it easier to continue working hard day after day. They make it easy to continue serving the city. MY TEAM… is the one that does it all. They take a lot of pride in what they do. And it’s that pride that makes everything look as good as it does. They are the ones out there doing the hard work that makes the difference at the end of the day. This is their award as much as mine. THIS YEAR… we will be designing and installing a new playground/pavilion at the Bob Jones Park soccer complex. With the Bicentennial playground being the most popular for play and parties, this will offer a nice option on the north side of town. WHEN I’M NOT WORKING, I ENJOY… cooking out, weekend getaways, vacations and spending time at RV resorts relaxing and enjoying life.

WYLY THEATRE | Conversations bring people together, but what if you couldn't use your voice? Small Mouth Sounds, written by Drama Desk-award winner Bess Wohl and directed by Obieaward winner Rachel Chavkin, explores that question. This funny and insightful play takes place in the woods, as six people attend a silent retreat. Strangers attempt to get to know each other without talking, which leads to funny and slightly uncomfortable encounters and internal growth. Many emotions will be felt and seen (just not heard) during this beautiful show.
