what makes the world go ’round I moved from New York to Southlake in 2004. Much of what Nicole and I loved about the prospects of raising our family here – the school, the community and the economic foundation – was already well established. Southlake tops the list in so many categories. But whether we like it or not, diversity isn’t one of them – at least not yet. Our city can accomplish most anything we put our minds to, and right now I’m proud to see we are allowing diversity to take a greater role in shaping life in our city. A perfect example is the growing tradition of Carroll Senior High School’s Interfaith Baccalaureate. In this issue, Dr. Nuha Said, a Southlake mother and Dragon parent, shares the “kindness, tolerance and inclusivity” of this annual event as one worth building upon. I hope you take a moment to read and reflect on this event. Other communitywide traditions, like this month’s Stars & Stripes celebration, continue to get stronger and reflect the ever-increasing diversity of our hometown. And, just weeks ago, the Southlake Chamber of Commerce celebrated its annual awards ceremony in the colorful garb and spirit reminiscent of its Bollywood theme. Teaching our kids to have a broader range of thinking and reinforcing an environment built on inclusion and shared experiences is the greatest wave of development. And embracing the future of development in Southlake means so much more than sidewalks, shopping and roundabouts. Diversity in thought and action is what really makes the world go ’round.

So the four-bedroom home was converted to a five-bedroom, which adds serious value to the property when the family decides to sell. “In most of these big houses that are four to five bedrooms, you can run out of space quick,” John says. “Sometimes, they aren’t even built for every kid to have their own room.” But the multi-faceted project also brought in some updates that freshened up the look of the interior. Their kitchen previously seemed separated from their living and dining rooms, but by building out an open-floor concept, the Huffmans were able to create a better kitchen flow.

KEEPING UP WITH TRENDS On the 2017 Remodeling Impact Report, the NARI asked realtors to rank interior projects that had the highest appeal to buyers and added the highest value to homes for resale. Complete kitchen renovations and upgrades held the top spots on both lists. Attic conversions to living areas were also on the top 15 in each. Knowing the value of the central hub of the home, as kitchens are commonly used, the Huffmans installed one

IN THE ZONE Before starting any project, the Huffmans ensure that all of those meaningful changes comply with the client’s local Home Owners Association’s covenants or requirements for home addition projects. Some HOAs have their own architectural committees that must review and approve remodels before demo days can be scheduled. Renovators also must check in with the city’s Planning and Development Services Department to see what is the maximum building height and lot coverage along with other code requirements. Guidelines for residential additions and remodels can be found on the city’s website. “Each zoning district has specific building height, setback and lot coverage requirements which can be found in the City’s zoning ordinance,” Senior Director of Planning and Development Services Ken Baker says. “Individuals may contact the Planning and Development Services Department - Planning Division for assistance in determining the zoning of your property and building regulations.” But the city is happy to see people put in the time and resources to improve their homes because they want to stay in the town they have come to love. “Southlake is a great community to live, and people are staying in their homes longer and investing in their property,” Ken says. big island kitchen to retain convenience and functionality while allowing space for walkways. They also installed new flooring to make the entire space feel more cohesive and introduced muted colors that gave the home a more transitional feel. The Huffmans know that, most of the time, their clients are looking to add in something specific with their renovations. While adding square footage is often a great monetary investment, John says that most of their clients are looking to match their homes to their specific life experiences. “Usually the client’s goal is trying to achieve a meaningful change in the home to make it more viable for them,” John says. 24 • JUL 18
CREATING MEANINGFUL CHANGE The Coulters felt the same way. Gina wanted to remain in her home, so she gave it the updates it needed to freshen up the space. “We love our neighborhood and the lot. The remodel will give us the feel of being in a new house,” Gina says. After four months of preconstruction and six months of construction, the Coulters saw their ideas come to life. “This is a very personal, intimate thing – being in someone’s home,” John says. “It takes time, but our clients are looking for quality construction. And clients walk away with a space that they will use and that’s inviting to them.” Gina says that her family will enjoy the personalized area that speaks to what’s important to them – especially the expanded family room and dog room. And it was the Huffmans that really helped it all come together. While the Huffmans continue to make Southlake more beautiful – one project at a time – they also are making our community a better place to live with their efforts. SPARKS FLY AT THIS YEAR’S STARS & STRIPES The festive event was spread throughout several different areas – Frank Edgar Cornish, IV Park, McPherson Park and Rustin Pavilion – and included plenty of music, grub and family-friendly fun. Southlake Community Band, Songbird Jones and Downtown Fever provided live entertainment throughout the day. While locals jammed out to these acts, they were also able to experience the day’s candy art, balloon artists, strolling characters, and spring free trampoline bounces. However, the highlight of the night was the fireworks show that took over the sky.
MAYOR LAURA HILL ANNOUNCES NEW CISD SAFETY INITIATIVE Mayor Laura Hill announced in a YouTube video that the city will be investing more than $500,000 in the coming year to support the exploration and implementation of safety and security initiatives in CISD schools. In the video, Mayor Hill said that the city has invested more than $1 million a year since 2013 for it’s school Resource Officers program, which makes it possible to have one SRO assigned to every Carroll school who is “listening, talking and engaging with our children and with us.” Next steps include the formation of a school safety committee made of up city, state and local law enforcement officials as well as leaders from the City and Carroll ISD to provide the Southlake Police Department the tools needed to strengthen school safety.

They made their debut as ushers at this year’s CSHS graduation ceremony. Lizzey Hill and Grant McFarlin started their rote for this year’s Texas 4000, the longest annual charity bike ride in the world, on June 2. The route stretches for more than 4,000 miles – running from Austin, Texas to Anchorage, Alaska – and strives to bring University of Texas student leaders together to share hope, knowledge and charity to those touched by cancer. LOCAL MOTHERS AND DAUGHTERS TEAM UP FOR SELF-DEFENSE CLASSES Southlake Parks and Recreation gave young women ages 14 and up, along with their mothers, the opportunity to pick up some safety skills in their self-defense classes this summer. Instructors taught their students about the importance of situational awareness as well as proven techniques from jiu jitsu. It was a great opportunity for local women to learn how to stay aware and defend themselves when they are faced with threatening situations. If you and your daughter want to learn how to defend yourselves, the last session’s classes will be held each Monday of August from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. You can sign up on The Marq’s website. SOUTHLAKE FIRE DEPARTMENT BRINGS THE HEAT TO KIDS SUMMER KICKOFFS A few local elementary students made a lavish entrance on the last few days of school by riding in on a Southlake fire truck. The firefighters picked up the participants. Whose parents won the department’s donated rides in PTO or nonprofit auctions. Loaded them into the fire truck, gave them a SFD T-shirt and drove them to school. After the firefighters turned on the lights and started bumping the sirens, the students’ classes met them outside to welcome them. Asher, Luke and Ellie Zawisky were escorted to Carroll Elementary on May 7; Hunter Burto and Carver Sinn were escorted to Old Union Elementary on May 11; James Heldoorn was escorted to Carroll Elementary on May 18; Vaughn Adams and Cameron Ebner were escorted to Rockenbaugh Elementary on May 21; Joe Close and Ashton Schroeder were escorted to Walnut Grove Elementary on May 24; Tyler and Brady Burtnett were escorted to Walnut Grove Elementary on May 29; and Aaron and Sofia Greenberg were escorted to Southlake Montessori on May 30. Older kids, like Scarlett Kuhn and Sammy Petkus, were picked up from school – Eubanks Intermediate – in an engine and were treated to lunch at the station with a few of our city’s finest. PROPER PUPS POSE FOR PAWS FOR A CAUSE HarborChase hosted Paws for a Cause, a special dog show and fundraiser, on June 14 to benefit The Humane Society. Locals brought out their pups to strut their stuff with other area pets and give back to animals in need. All the dogs were able to enjoy “pet puptinis” while their owners were provided with some delicious snacks. And all attendees were entered into a drawing for a special dog gift basket full of goodies. RILEY DODGE HOSTS FIRST SUMMER FOOTBALL CAMPS New head football coach Riley Dodge hosted his first round of football camps this summer for aspiring Dragons. Students in first to sixth grade came out for a three-day camp from June 5 to 7, and seventh through ninth graders will get their chance to learn from the local legend from July 16 to 18. All participants will walk away with a bit more knowledge about the game and a camp T-shirt to remember their time playing in Dragon Stadium.

CARROLL DRAGONS WIN 6A UIL STATE BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP The Carroll Dragons definitely protected the tradition by walking away from Round Rock as 6A State champions. They took on San Antonio’s Reagan High School Rattlesnakes at the Dell Diamond on June 9 and left with the title after a 7-2 victory. This marks the third baseball state title for the Dragons, and the first since the 2002 season.

BIG BEAT DALLAS ABRUPTLY CLOSES ITS DOORS After two months of business, Big Beat Dallas announced it was closing its doors on its last day of business. The mixed-use complex included five restaurants and bars – Bar Manzanilla, Highway 61 South, Texas Jam House and Marketplace, Martini Ranch and Texas C-Bar – as well as seven live music stages, which set it up to be an emerging entertainment hub for Las Colinas locals. While Big Beat suddenly announced its closure on Facebook – in a post that has since been taken down, Toyota Music Factory says its customers should rest assured that the space will continue to thrive. There are still 20 other restaurants that will remain open adjacent to Toyota Music Factory. And two new restaurants will soon join the restaurant scene: Kitchen 101 and Violet Room.

I felt a large debt of gratitude toward the doctors who put me back together, so I thought it would be rewarding to be able to do the same to others. DOES YOUR PRACTICE GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY? Our practice gives team coverage to five local high schools and, during football season, we provide a free Friday night clinic to athletes from any area school. Personally, I am an instructor for the Arthroscopy Association of North America, where I help teach surgeons from around the world techniques to help their patients back home.

GALAXY CANDLE JARS We know what you’re thinking: “Mason jars are so 2015.” Well, yes, but have you seen them turned into what appears to be the universe in an average kitchen container? Grab a few mason jars that are laying around from the last rustic wedding you attended (we know you have them), and get your kids crafting! This one is fun for all ages. WHAT YOU WILL NEED 8oz quilted crystal mason jar Decoupage glue Gel food coloring Assorted glitter Stirring sticks Disposable plastic cup Battery-operated tea lights An adult NSTRUCTIONS: 1. Mix two tablespoons of decoup-

It doesn’t get much more simple than this, but the result is sheer joy for the family car enthusiasts. Parent hack: different molds will also yield the same fun, but for the sake of this craft, we’re sticking to cars. Crayon Cars are exactly what the name implies – crayons in the shape of cars. Brilliant, right? The instructions call for broken crayons, and if your kids are below the age of 10, that shouldn’t be too hard to find.

SOCTOPUS Eight limbs is a lot to keep up with...and that’s just two kids! Add to the mayhem with a fun, easy-to-make stuffed octopus. Or rather, soctopus. As the name implies, this little critter is made from socks. Before you cross it off the list, we are happy to inform you this craft does not require sewing.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED One sock printed or patterned for an extra fun octopus A few handfuls of fiberfill - also called pillow stuffing Elastic bands Wiggle eyes Craft glue
1. Arrange the broken crayons into the mold. Try to fill each nook. Mixing colors is totally acceptable, if not encouraged. 2. Place the mold on a plate. 3. Preheat oven to 275 degrees. Note: some blogs will tell you to microwave the molds. We tried it and highly advise against it. 4. Bake the mold for 10 to 13 minutes or until crayons are fully melted 5. Let it cool fully before popping out fun new crayon shapes!

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Stuff the toe portion of the sock with your desired amount fiberfill to create the body of the octopus. 2. Fasten the stuffed portion with an elastic band. 3. But one shining newcomer has already proved to be a pillar in the local fine dining community. Bullion opened its doors last November and delighted Dallas diners with its gorgeous exterior, sleek interior and overall sophistication. Even bypassers can tell the elegant eatery brings a new flare to the area. Located on the ground floor of the iconic 400 Record building in downtown Dallas, this mid-century French restaurant golden façade is a statement all in itself. Its metallic scales catch the light differently throughout the day and also catch diners’ eyes as soon as they walk up to the space.
“Built on stilts and in the shape of an inverted gold bar, we wanted the exterior to attract attention,” Chef Bruno Davaillon says. “The name Bullion references gold, as in ‘gold bullion,’ hence the main decorative theme of the restaurant.” Once guests make their way into the structure and ascend the glass staircase, they will see that mid-century feeling carries throughout the restaurant – thanks to the space’s contemporary design, modernist furniture and original artwork. After taking in the aesthetic, guests should feel inclined to mosey on over to the lavish bar for a drink. Their libations include craft cocktails that help set the mood for the rest of the evening – like the Modern American Martini, made with Hayman’s Old Tom Gin, Carpano Biacno and Regans’ Orange Bitters #6, or the Champs Élysées, made with Pierre Ferrand 1840 Cognac, green Chartreuse, lemon and Angostura.

After finding a seat at one of their contemporary tables and opening up the dinner menu, guests will see a plethora of choices of both traditional and contemporary French favorites. While other French restaurants lean into the flash that comes with the region’s lavish dishes, Davaillon’s dishes are instilled with a more approachable take on the culture’s cuisine. “I’m trying to remove the pretentiousness that people expect from a French restaurant,” Davaillon says. “Our dishes are more causal and ingredientfocused than traditional French cuisine.” A clear example of that is the L’oeuf Pouché, made with a poached egg, morel mushroom and asparagus. The French favorite takes on a few tweaks throughout the year depending on what is at its peak freshness. “The locally sourced mushrooms in this dish rotate seasonally and are a great example of the highquality ingredients that we use,” Davaillon says. One glance at the featured entrees proves Bullion’s kitchen utilizes classic French techniques to create dynamic dishes. Chef Davaillon uses a tamis – a traditional tool not often found in modern kitchens – to create the Quenelle Lyonnaise Sauce Américaine. While it might not be the fastest process, it produces light and airy baked fish dumplings, served in a lobster sauce, which are a new delight with every bite. If your mouth is watering at the idea of this dish, be sure to come out during the week because it’s only available on Mondays. Before heading back to Southlake, treat yourself to one of their lavish desserts. Whether you think every French meal must include a soufflé or are looking for a bit of flare with your food, their sweeter menu is sure to put a smile on your face. Their Spiced Chocolate Soufflé, served with pistachio ice cream, is a picture-perfect treat. And the Baked Alaska, served with jocande, vanilla parfait and mandarin, gives patrons a show. The meringue, which is flamed tableside, comes out with a perfect peak and acts as the true pinnacle of an excellent dining experience. Try out the glistening brasserie to enjoy an extravagant night out on the town. Its elevated, yet welcoming environment is perfect for celebrating a special occasion or exploring a new take on the culture’s most prominent dishes.

Burger fans rejoice: Hopdoddy Burger Bar has moved into town. Their new Southlake Town Square location is set to quickly become the new go-to for a fun summertime meal out. The Austin-based burger chain made a name for itself in its hometown for its stacked burgers and delicious fries. And because people just couldn’t get enough, they started opening up restaurants across the country. After settling into a few Dallas and Fort Worth locations, Hopdoddy opened the doors to their Southlake location last month and are ready to serve up quality bites – all of which are made in-house. “From butchering and grinding our meats daily to baking small batches of fresh buns in-house, we do everything from scratch,” Hopdoddy brand manager Erin Fohn says. “We cook all our burgers to order.” And their burgers mean business. Their substantial patties are cooked on a flat top to make sure all those juices stay intact. “We like our patties on the thicker side,” Fohn says. No matter which one you order, it’s sure to come stacked with fresh toppings that enhance the protein’s natural flavors – like their Primetime Burger, served with American grass-fed Kobe beef, brie, arugula, caramelized onions, truffle aioli, tomatoes and Hopdoddy steak sauce, or their Ahi Tuna, made with sushi-grade tuna steak that’s topped with sunflower sprouts, nori chips, teriyaki, honey wasabi, mayonnaise, pickled ginger, lettuce, tomato, lettuce and onion. ometimes, a change for the better needs an influential nudge. When it comes to the Carroll Senior High School Interfaith Baccalaureate put together by the school’s Parent Teacher Organization, Dr. Nuha Said was that initial thrust. After attending the event when her son was a senior and the year after when her nephew graduated, she knows that the event’s current state is something Southlake should be proud of. But it took time to get to there. And who better to explain that progress than the woman herself. She shares her story with us. A priest, a rabbi and an imam walk into a Texas church… it’s not the beginning of a joke, but rather the beginning of Carroll Senior High School’s Interfaith Baccalaureate service. In Southlake, a town known for a tradition of excellence, change happens slowly. The baccalaureate proved no exception. In 2016, my son was graduating from CSHS. I learned of the Interfaith Baccalaureate when the embossed invitation arrived in the mail. Hosted by the PTO and held at White’s Chapel Methodist Church, the interfaith service was meant to honor the graduates and their families. I asked the PTO which faith groups would be represented. They told me Catholic, Methodist and Jewish clergy would be speaking. While my Muslim family was welcome to attend, no Islamic clerics had been invited. My request that an imam be included was met with resistance and even vows of negative press. Eventually, an invitation was extended to the imam. It was the first time Muslims, Jews and Christians were represented together at this interfaith event. Muslim graduates were present despite the initial uncertainty of our inclusion. The advice from the clerics was genuine and strikingly similar despite the different religious traditions.
AN INCLUSIVE TRANSFORMATION A year later, it was my nephew’s turn to graduate from the school. The imam had been invited back. The rabbi, imam, deacon and pastor spoke on tolerance, kindness, giving, happiness and joy. Eleven students offered faith statements reflecting the diversity of Southlake. Jewish, Muslim, Nondenominational Christian, Latterday Saint, Baptist, Catholic, Methodist, Presbyterian, Hindu and Baha’i voices were all heard. SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

They were a diverse group of students: different religions, races and ethnicities. In the small world of high school, they came from polar opposites – choir kids, football players, introverts and big personalities. But the seniors who participated in the 2017 service knew why it was important. Maddy Heymann, a 2017 graduate, was eager to speak up and represent her Jewish faith. “People forget that Southlake is not a monolith,” Heymann says. “My religion teaches me that we are part of one human race. It taught me love.” While Saeed Semrin, who also graduated in 2017, was more cautious in speaking about Islam. “I’ve known people here my entire life. They know that I believe in God. Being Muslim is part of who I am; it’s the moral compass I follow – same God. Same rules for right and wrong as everybody else,” Semrin explains. “I decided to talk to make sure the people I don’t know personally understand that. So many people think they know what Muslims believe without actually ever speaking to a Muslim.” For the first time, students of non-Abrahamic faiths were also given the opportunity to speak to their peers about their religion. Neaka Khalilian was able to speak about the importance of her Baha’i faith. “I’m pretty sure most people had never heard of Baha’is before,” Khalilian says. “I wanted them to be aware that spirituality and connection to God is forever.” And quiet and reserved 2017 graduate Vasumati Polavarapu was able to represent Hinduism. “People don’t understand Hinduism. But I was happy to share a forum with all these other classmates,” Polavarapu says. “I felt it got people really talking about other faiths.” Even the choice of music was deliberate. Graduates from the 2017 class, Sarah Johnson, Billy Wade and Jocelyn Ward, mentioned the hymn “My Kindness Shall Not Depart From Thee” was a favorite in their LDS Church. They had been touched that Presbyterian and Methodist graduates would sing it alongside them. And Wade hoped future services would showcase even more diversity. “I would love to hear other groups perform their songs of worship,” Wade says. “It would be amazing to hear Hindu or Islamic chants.” Tre Sledge and Laurentius McGill were two members of a trio that performed “10,000 Reasons” at the 2017 service. Both were members of the football team, devout Christians and, as people of color in a predominately white school, felt it was important to be a part of a event focusing on inclusivity. 90 • JUL 18

“I’m always surprised at how open people are about being close-minded,” Sledge says. “Praising God, in all our different ways together, was important for our class to see.” Jazmine Hooper rounded out the trio. As the third member of the singing group that year, she stood out from the other two because of her methods of personal expression including tie-dyed hair, multiple tattoos and piercings. But she wanted to show with her participation that her appearance did not have anything to do with her faith. “I wanted to perform to remind some of the adults that God loves us all,” Hooper says. “His love is not contingent on my hair, makeup or how I dress.” Rabbi Cytron-Walker, who had been a pillar of the service for years, left the 2017 Interfaith Baccalaureate impressed. His advice in the planning stages had been to make sure that at the end of every prayer, everyone could say “Amen” without reservation. “I had no idea what the hymns were, but they were pretty,” Cytron-Walker says. “This year was beautiful. This year was a revolution!”
A TRADITION EVOLVES CSHS PTO organizers Tobin Osterberg and Jill Cantrell were responsible for the truly inclusive 2017 service. They had taken their mandate for change seriously when the PTO decided the service needed to include more faiths. They were undeterred by critics who felt the presence of both an imam and a rabbi was sufficient. They spent hours talking to people of all different faiths and faith leaders in the community. They realized despite Southlake being predominantly Christian, a service that truly honored the graduates needed to have representation of all the faiths included in the class. They felt the best way to do that was to allow the students to represent themselves. One of the program additions was a candle lighting ceremony. It acts as the the highlight of the service with students representing different faiths standing in a semi-circle, each holding a candle. Once the central candle was lit, the flame was passed to each neighboring student. The image of different faiths sharing the same light was profound. It was a visual confirmation that we shine brighter together than alone. After the service, Imam AbdelRahman Murphy reflected on the positive feedback he received. “To hear firsthand and deeply humanize people of different beliefs and backgrounds is a powerful experience,” Murphy says. “People actively mentioned that they were devoted to their particular faith, but found positivity in my message. That is what this is all about, SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM
seeing how we can benefit one another while appreciating our differences.” Cantrell was gratified by how touched people were. “We received not one single negative comment – quiet the opposite – even from people who doubted the most. [CISD Superintendent] Dr. Faltys’ words to us immediately following the service were, ‘I think we have just started a new tradition.’”
CONTINUING A LEGACY The 2018 Baccalaureate continued this new tradition. Rabbi Cytron-Walker, Imam Abdel Rahman Murphy, Father Jason Wooley and Dr. Todd Renner spoke on the common theme of living a life that matters. They gave homilies on leading a life built on character and love with common values present in all the represented faiths. The event included the same lighting ceremony and the student faith statements. Travis Almand, a recent graduate, represented his Methodist faith and knew the distinctive value of the inclusive service. “With the many blessings we are given in Southlake, and the positive time of graduation, it is extremely important for our school and community to unite through out faiths.” Southlake prides itself on traditions of academic, athletic and artistic excellence. We should be equally proud of the lessons we impart on kindness, tolerance, inclusivity and respect. The evolution of the Interfaith Baccalaureate showcases the diversity and beauty of the beliefs in our town. A priest, a rabbi and an imam walked into a Texas church to deliver messages for graduating high school seniors. And we all came out with a deeper understanding of each other and the common values we share. That is a tradition we should cherish and continue to build on.

Naturally, Washington D.C. is probably one the first places that comes to mind. However, we decided to give you a mixture of places that serve to rehash a plethora of different eras. Plus, you can trick your kids into getting some summertime education. Fun learning experiences are truly the way to go when school is out!

Charleston The beauty of Charleston, South Carolina, is that you get a sampling of multiple different eras in U.S. history. Most notably, the Civil War had a large impact on the city. Sites such as Fort Sumter are evidence of that. In fact, the first shots of the war were fired there on April 12, 1861. The fort is open for tours and incredibly affordable, with adult passes priced at $3 and children admitted for free. Get a glimpse of life before the war by checking out Magnolia Plantation. It boasts one of the nation’s largest collections of azaleas and camellias, making it a beautiful stop for botanists and history buffs alike. Much like New Orleans, Charleston is home to a French Quarter. In it, The Dock Street

Fort McGilvray We’re taking you way off the beaten path for this one. Unsurprisingly, most people forget that Alaska had a part in World War II. However, control of Alaska’s Aleutian Islands during the war was crucial to transportation in the Pacific Ocean. The Japanese army knew this and occupied two of the islands in June of 1942. There are plenty of historical sites along the island chain, but it takes some substantial effort (read: ferries and float planes). If you’re already in Anchorage, we have a more attainable WWII site to visit. One town away, in Seward, Alaska, lies the trailhead to Caines Head Coastal Trail, which leads to abandoned U.S. military Fort McGilvray. The fort is perched 650 feet above Resurrection Bay. When we said more attainable, that still didn’t mean easy. This trial will require you to keep good track of the tides, as a significant stretch will be completely underwater for most of the day. It’s a tight window, but it’s worth it. Once you make it to the bunkers, you’re free to walk in, on and through them. Nothing is roped off, and you are free to have a hands-on history lesson. It’s a 14-mile hike one way, so it may not be the best for young children. Alaska.org/detail/caines-head-trail
Philadelphia This one shouldn’t surprise anyone. Philadelphia is steeped in history from our nation’s founding days. While the Liberty Bell is still there – spoiler alert, it’s cracked – we had some other stops in mind. Perhaps the most popular historical attraction in Philadelphia is definitely worth elbowing your way through a crowd for. Independence Hall, completed in 1753, is where Declaration of Independence was signed and the U.S. Constitution was debated and adopted. It’s like seeing “Hamilton” without paying the Broadway prices. Speaking of “Hamilton,” are you ready to wave Betsy Ross’ flag higher? Go visit her home and see where the magic was stitched together. The tour is interactive and perfect for kiddos. Reserve an afternoon to immerse yourself in the African American History Museum. Founded in 1976, the museum is the first museum funded and built by a municipality to help preserve, interpret and exhibit the heritage of African Americans. It features a rotating schedule of exhibitions, so check the schedule before your trip. Led by a roster of 20 seniors looking to avenge last season’s state semi-final round loss, this year’s squad rallied around head coach Larry Vucan and the motto “unfinished business.” Behind the pitching of 6A State MVP Kyle Warden, Nicco Cole and Adam Stephenson, the Dragons gave up just three runs in both the semifinal and final games combined. With a 35-6 record, including an undefeated postseason run, the Dragons defeated San Antonio Reagan 7-2 to finish as the 2018 6A Baseball State Champions!

THE MAN BEHIND THE POPS
O
n a hot July afternoon, it’s easy to feel like you’re melting. To cool off, many locals head over to the Southlake Steel City Pops. Founder Jim Watkins may have set up shop in his hometown of Alabama, but he has plenty of Texas ties. So, we spent five minutes learning more about the family man behind the pops. WHILE ON VACATION … with my family in Nashville in the spring of 2002, we stumbled across a unique shop called Las Paletas. It was a simple store selling unique sweets called Mexican paletas – more commonly known as pops. BUT THEY WERE SO MUCH MORE … than just pops. These delicious paletas were gourmet, brightly colored, all natural and healthy too – simply unlike anything we’d ever had. When we tasted these amazing pops, we decided everyone needed to know about this. FAST FORWARD … nine years. As I was turning 40, I found myself unhappy in my career and wanting to fulfill a lifelong dream of owning a restaurant. So, I quit my job and began learning all I could about restaurant ownership from some amazing friends. MY MOM AND I … developed all the initial recipes and that was a real treasured time for me since she had taught me how to cook. IT TRULY HAS BEEN A FAMILY BUSINESS … from the start. My mom helped with the recipes, my dad gave lots of business advice, my wife and four sons have all worked very hard to build shops, make pops, vend events, etc. We have all been very actively involved in our business. I REALLY JUST … wanted to open a small shop in Homewood, Alabama, and share great food with folks. I didn’t set out to build Steel City Pops into a multi-store idea. So, it started simply for me to make great food, offer great service and manage my business as well. WE ONLY USE … natural ingredients in all of our pops. The difference in this is found in the flavor. Our commitment to this and making our pops in small batches ensures high quality and great flavor. STEEL CITY POPS’ … name comes from a nickname for Birmingham (our home city). In the early 1900s, Birmingham and Pittsburgh were the two largest producers of steel in America, so that is where our name originated.
AFTER OUR FIRST SHOP … had been open about two months, I realized we were going to have the opportunity to grow it into something larger than we had originally envisioned. So, we began looking for the best spot for store number two. We found that spot after a few months of looking and opened our second store in Birmingham about 11 months after we started our business. I THINK OUR ORIGINAL GOALS WERE … making great food, offering great service (which is about having awesome employees) and also creating nice environments for people to gather. MY WIFE WAS BORN AND RAISED IN EULESS … and I went to Baylor, so we have lots of family and friends in the area. While it may seem to others to be a long way from Alabama, it is home to us, and we are very connected to the DFW area. AS FAR AS SOUTHLAKE … it is our sixth location we opened in the DFW area. We had been looking here for two years, and we felt like our current location is the best one we could’ve found. We love the ease of getting into and out of the center, and the patio area is awesome! WE FEEL LIKE THEY ARE … a great time treat. Our menu changes with the seasons, so if you haven’t tried Steel City Pops in the fall or at Christmas time, you should! They are some of my favorite flavors we serve. But summertime is the perfect time to have our pops. It is such a refreshing treat for those hot Texas summer days. LOCAL PEACHES AND MELONS … are our big highlights of the summer menu. Our pops of the month feature in July is Peach Cobbler A La Mode: Peach Cream Pop, dipped in white chocolate and dredged in graham cracker crumbs. WE HOPE OUR STORES … are fun places to gather. We have designed each one to be a place where you can come with family/friends and relax.

or rainy days, breakups and times when you just wish someone understood you, Sam Smith is there. The Grammy and Academy Award winner is known for his melancholy pop/R&B tunes, with striking lyrics that touch your soul — in a good way. This British singer/songwriter is stopping by American Airlines Center this month to perform his emotional-yet-catchy songs from his newest album, “The Thrill of it All.” Although screaming fans are to be expected (the accent mixed with his rugged looks plus a sensitive side equals a recipe for fan-girling), the concert will also be a stunning experience filled with music that’s real, touching and incredibly heartwarming. In 2015, he recorded “Writing’s on the Wall,” the theme song for “Spectre,” and he released his latest album in November 2017. During the show, Smith’s fans will love singing to his newest hits, “Too Good at Goodbyes,” “Pray,” “Palace” and “Midnight Train.” Be sure to bring waterproof mascara, plenty of tissues and a good friend to go with you, as crying — and having a good time — will be unavoidable.

A Haunting Love Story See the Intriguing Musical Sequel to ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ This Month
T
he Phantom is back — bringing drama, obsession, romance, music and, of course, the white mask with him! Grammy and Tony Award winner Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Love Never Dies” is coming to Music Hall at Fair Park this month, telling the fast-paced “Phantom of the Opera” sequel set 10 years after The Phantom disappeared from the Paris Opera House. As a refresher for those who haven’t heard the story in a while, “The Phantom of the Opera” is about a deformed man who lives in the sewers underneath the Paris Opera House, who tutors and falls in love with chorus singer Christine and terrorizes and kills other members of the opera house. Based on a French novel by Gaston Leroux, “The Phantom of the Opera” became one of the most successful musicals of all time, has been seen by more than 130 million people, and has won more than 50 international awards including the Tony Award for Best Musical. If you can’t get enough of this dark love story, then you will love Webber’s sequel, “Love Never Dies,” which is already gaining critical acclaim internationally.
