Heroes Among Us In my small hometown, my mom would comb the aisles of Bryant’s grocery store — freshly clipped coupons in hand — while I made my way across the stark-white tiled floors to my special “along-for-the-ride” hangout. Tucked between the freezer section and the checkout stand was my own fortress of comic book solitude. As I look back, I realize that magazine stand drew me in like, dare I say, a hero to a damsel in distress. There, within reach of my tiny mitts, yet beyond the reach of my imagination, was a world of wonder direct from the uncanny mind of Stan Lee. As she rounded the corner to pay for our weekly forage, Mom always knew where to find me: engrossed in the lives and journeys of Batman, The Green Lantern, Iron Man, Captain America and the X-Men. With all his gallant gadgetry, Batman was an early favorite. For the very same reasons, Iron Man was another must-read. For these heroes of mine, there was no superhuman backstory, no gamma-ray mutated abilities. They were just two guys living among us with their own flaws, yet they had the courage (and cash) to make a difference. The human side of being superhuman has always been an attractive storyline (especially when Linda Carter’s red boots are thrown in for good measure). Needless to say, I was excited to learn that Southlake also had some champions of the cul-de-sac. A power couple, one dressed in appropriate shades of green, whose children happened to share the same elementary school as my own. This month, Reggie and Amy Rolle, stars from the hit television series “Power Rangers Lost Galaxy,” share the backstory of how they became a power family that just happened to land in Southlake. I can’t help but wonder, “Where do they shop for groceries?” Yours in Southlake Style,

“THE BOOK OF LIFE” BY DEBORAH HARKNESS

JULY 15

The Beginning of the End The highly anticipated finale to Deborah Harkness’ No. 1 New York Times bestselling trilogy has finally hit bookshelves. In the trilogy’s final volume, Harkness deepens the themes of power and passion with past deeds and consequences as we see historian and witch Diana Bishop and vampire scientist Matthew Clairmont finally discover what the witches unearthed so many centuries ago. With more than one million copies sold in the U.S., this trilogy has landed on all of the major bestseller lists, and we’re certain this final installment will even send chills down the walking dead’s spines.

WESTLAKE ACADEMY HONORS FIRST TEACHER OF THE YEAR Westlake Academy ended the school year with a special historical moment as the very first Teacher of the Year award was given to fourth grade teacher Kat Calzini. The honor came after a vigorous search coordinated by the Campus Leadership Team, which began work on the award last year in conjunction with the school’s 10th anniversary. The CLT is made up of students, teachers, administration and community members from Westlake and Keller. After submissions to the team from parents, students, teachers and staff, the list was narrowed to four nominees who, along with Calzini, included Cyndie Jacks, Kindergarten; Nicole Bauer, 3rd grade; and Chris Williams, MYP humanities teacher. Calzini not only received a plaque to remember this honor; she was also awarded $1,500 from the academy’s parent-teacher organization to use for personal or professional development. HAVEN’S HORSES Ministry through horsemanship

F

or seven years and counting, Haven’s Horses has given children, both able-bodied and disabled, the ability to carry themselves with confidence. Through therapeutic riding and various horsemanship classes, the Keller-based ministry — a division of the residential foster home called Christ’s Haven for Children — teaches kids life skills through connecting with one of the world’s most magnificent creatures. Haven’s Horses is constantly accepting new riders for physical therapy on horseback and therapeutic riding. At Haven’s Horses, “We believe everyone can ride.” Celena Salinas, program director for Haven’s Horses, has been involved with the organization since its inception in 2008. Her daughter, now 12, used to struggle with dyslexia. “I saw what the horsemanship classes did for her, boosting her confidence,” she says. “I fell in love with the program, so I started volunteering.” Haven’s Horses is especially beneficial for children who have disabilities like autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy or even brain injuries because they are able to improve their cognitive processing, balance coordination and communication skills. According to Salinas, horses work particularly well with children who have Asperger syndrome or seizure disorders because the animals can sense the moments before a child experiences a seizure episode. Additionally, a horse’s gait is similar to the way people walk, so riders are using muscles they might not use on a regular basis and are therefore gaining valuable physical exercise. “We have one rider who is severely disabled,” Salinas says. “It was a tremendous struggle to hold her and have her on the horse because she doesn’t have the core to sit up. Recently, I was at the stables watching her lesson. It was a complete 180 from when I first saw her to seeing her then. She was actually sitting up instead of hunched over. It was a speechless thing to witness. To know that’s what I’m a part of makes it so rewarding.”

SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

Haven’s Horses keeps 14 horses, each of which is accustomed to spending time with young children and has a special personality that is patient and gentle. The program is unique in that it takes a clinical method like therapy and brings it into a non-clinical environment: the outdoors, where children can feel more comfortable as they bond with the animals. Haven’s Horses also promotes the mission that Christ’s Haven for Children advocates: fostering a relationship with Jesus Christ. The entire staff of volunteers is dedicated to improving all children’s lives through horsemanship and doing so in a safe and loving environment. Haven’s Horses is always accepting donations and sponsorships that help the program not only provide items like riding helmets, western tack and barn supplies but also invite corporations to embrace the opportunity to get involved with the program. Several wish list items include an English therapeutic riding saddle ($1,500), Comfort treeless saddle ($600) and an electric chair lift ($10,000).

“We believe everyone can ride at Haven’s Horses.”

Suburban superheroes, Amy, Reggie, Raven and Roman Rolle let us into their galaxy.

O

n a warm afternoon in May, the Southlake suburb of Timarron is business as usual. Fragrant trees sway in the gentle breeze, a yellow school bus drives slowly through the neighborhood, and sprinkler systems meticulously water each perfectly manicured lawn. Inside one house, Reggie Rolle and his wife, Amy, are getting their children ready for after-school activities.

Raven, a 7th grader at Dawson Middle School, has club volleyball practice. At six feet tall, it’s no wonder her team is currently ranked No. 1 in the country. Roman, 9, plays flag football (his team is a back-to-back state champions), but the Rockenbaugh Elementary School student prefers knocking down threes on the basketball court. A second daughter, Jasmine, is finishing up her sophomore year at USC, where she excels as an art major. During the day, Amy works as a freelance makeup artist for Tom Ford and MAC, and Reggie is an area manager for the American fashion label rag & bone. But these people aren’t your typical suburban parents. Behind the normalcy of their everyday routines with their kids and their jobs lies a powerful truth. Reggie is really Damon Henderson, the heroic Green Galaxy Power Ranger, and Amy is Trakeena, a formidable villain and one of the Power Rangers’ most evil enemies. Well, at least on TV. Reggie and Amy met in the late 1990s after signing on to “Power Rangers Lost Galaxy,” the seventh season in a series that spans 21 years and 20 seasons to date and is the second most-watched television show in worldwide history behind “Baywatch.” Amy, a Kentucky native, worked in Los Angeles for several years as a model before she hired an agent who sent her on TV auditions. Reggie, who was born and raised in suburban Minnesota, had been singing, dancing and acting since childhood. He’d done numerous commercials for companies like Nike and Adidas

but had only been in the city a year when his agent introduced him to a manager searching for actors for pilot season. “She was looking for more ethnic actors,” Reggie says. “There were a lot of people in my group, including Josh Hartnett and Amy Adams. She actually auditioned for ‘Power Rangers’ with me, for the Pink Ranger.” Reggie had six callbacks for the show, when typically actors only have two or three. “I found out later from one of the producers that the Blue Ranger and I had the most callbacks because they picked us first, and they wanted to see other actors with us. At the time, I had no idea.” (Amy Adams didn’t land her role, but as Reggie points out humorously, she ended up doing fairly well for herself.) Although they were both cast in the show, the Rolles didn’t meet each other i m m e d i a t e l y. While in a wardrobe room for a fitting, Reggie noticed a wall fea-

- reggie rolle

turing headshots of all the actors who’d made the cut. “I was looking at them — oh, he got in, he got in, then, who’s that?” he recalls, after spotting Amy’s picture. “They told me she was the villain. For the first couple of weeks, we didn’t get to see her in real life. It was just photos, or I would see a Polaroid lying around of her in her costume.” Then one day, Reggie arrived on set for makeup. “I walked into the makeup trailer, and she was there,” he says. “I just thought, whoa, and said, ‘Hey, what’s up?’ And we started talking.” Because Amy’s character, Trakeena, was initially written as a minor role, the two didn’t cross paths much in the beginning. The main “Power Rangers Lost Galaxy” villain was Trakeena’s father, Scorpius. An animatronic puppet, Scorpius required a great amount of manpower to operate and make him look real. “That thing was giant,” Amy remembers. “It weighed hun-

dreds of pounds. When they would try to move it to another set, it was really difficult. So, they had the Red Ranger destroy him, which made me have a really good reason to want to destroy him and pretty much all the Rangers for being friends with him. After Scorpius was cut out of the storyline, I started working more and became a series regular.” Filming was broken up into two units, first and second. First unit shot on sound stages in Valencia, where the spaceships were built, while second unit was always on location. “Usually, if we were on second unit, she was on first unit,” Reggie says. “Most of the time, the Power Rangers were together. It takes a week to shoot an episode, and we shot about 52. We were all like siblings because we were together 13 hours a day. The night before our first show

aired, we had a slumber party at the Red Ranger’s house so that we could wake up in the morning and watch it together.” Contrastingly, Amy filmed many of her scenes with Japanese stunt team members donning monster costumes. “They read their lines to me in Japanese, but in the TV show, it comes out in English because that’s done afterwards in ADR [automated dialogue replacement]. It was a little different for me than it was for Reggie. There was a lot of bonding with him and the other Rangers.” Trakeena’s outfit was also significantly more intricate than any other cast member because she was half human with tentacles, antennae and other buglike features. “That was a trip from day one,” Amy laughs. “I had to get encased in plaster to make a mold of my body and was in it for eight hours with just my head sticking out. They used that to build a dummy of my body, an exact mold, in order to create a costume. Then they did the same thing for my head. It was an intense process.”

“Being on ‘Power Rangers’ was such an unexpected adventure.” “““

The final product was made out of neoprene rubber. Stiff and uncomfortable, Amy wasn’t able to move around very easily, especially when she had to chase someone while carrying her 40-pound staff. Eventually, that costume was only designated as her battle armor so she didn’t have to wear it all the time. A second suit was created to replace it, but Amy remembers it being equally impractical. “It was like a cat suit, and there was no way to use the bathroom without the assistance of another person,” she says. “So, I got really close to my hair and makeup person. She was with me twenty-four-seven when I was on set. Also, I wore this costume every day out in the desert for two years, so I had crazy tan lines because of the hole patterns. I went to a tanning bed to try to get rid of them for like a year.” Because of her extravagant costume, hair and makeup, Amy typically had a 3:30 a.m. call time for first unit and a 2:30 a.m. call time

for second. “I was in hair and makeup for about twoand-a-half hours,” she says. “The exteriors on location could be anywhere. They can be two hours away. [The show would] always pick desert landscapes that could seem like a different planet. So they’d say, ‘Amy, be at Vasquez Rocks for hair and makeup at 2:30 a.m.’” Finally, a script brought Reggie and Amy’s characters together. In an episode titled “Green Courage” that aired in October 1999, Damon — a mechanic — offers to fix Trakeena’s broken ship in order to rescue a political official that she has kidnapped. “For me, being on ‘Power Rangers’ was such an unexpected adventure,” Amy says. “It gave me good stories and experiences that you don’t have ordinarily.” Reggie recalls one experience that still resonates with him today. “There was a time when Make-AWish kids came to set. Their dream is to meet you. I met this kid from Australia, who I think had cancer. You’re in your world, and then

all of a sudden, in between scenes, you might be sitting in your chair when this family comes up to you. It just takes you away from everything. It was pretty life changing for this kid from Minnesota.” After the couple wrapped “Power Rangers” in 2000, they remained in L.A. for six years before deciding they wanted to live in a more familyfriendly city. Southlake appeared on their radar after Amy’s good friend, a Southlake native, suggested she check it out. “We were looking for a better school system,” Amy says. “A lot of Roman’s life as a little baby was spent in the car taking the other two to and from school. His quality of life was basically Ryan Seacrest on KISS FM. The sense of community in Southlake was very appealing to us.” Reggie hopes Southlake will remain their home base for a while, although he admits he sometimes misses L.A. “There are certain things about big

cities that are good for kids when it comes to the real world. But in communities like Southlake, everything’s designed for families.” Amy also had guest appearances on TV shows like “Third Rock From the Sun,” and Reggie appeared on “All About Us” and “Charmed,” but both count “Power Rangers” as their most memorable filming experience because it helped develop their family. “When I signed up for the show, I was just looking for the next job,” Amy says. “You work, and whenever your job is over, you’re unemployed again and need to hustle to get the next one. But the one thing I didn’t realize about ‘Power Rangers’ is that it never goes away. It will always be around, and there’s always a new audience. Every couple years, there are new little kids who like it. Our whole season aired again last year, on Saturday mornings. We’d wake up and watch it at home. It is a piece of our family.”

Drake Ferri is Southlake’s Latest Golden Boy By Christina Mlynski Photography by Dustin Vyers

There’s a consistent thud. The constant sound of a neon yellow tennis ball hits the court before catching enough force to shoot off the ground and land eloquently back in his hand. All in one swift motion, the spherical shape soars high in the sky and is immediately sucked back down by gravity. But before the miniature sun sinks too low, a racket comes into swift motion from the left side at full force, slaying the ball forward into what seems like oblivion. It’s a spectacular piece that most viewers would only see on their television screens during the U.S. Open. However, Drake Ferri puts on a similar artistic performance on a weekly basis at Southlake Tennis Center. Ferri is like most 11-year-olds. He enjoys spending time with his family, hanging out with his friends and getting into friendly fire with his two brothers. But there’s something about this Southlake middle schooler that is different than most — he’s never lost a tennis tournament. “He is technically sound, but he has also mastered the mental side of the game and never gets negative or emotional,” explains Southlake Tennis Center coach Nathan Brynes. “He’s an incredible athlete.” The love of sports runs in this undefeated champion’s genes. Coming from a family that is prone to athletics — his father is a professional soccer player — Ferri has the natural stamina and athleticism most children desire. He enjoys the rush and thrill of competing, Brynes says. Ask anyone, and they will express that what makes this tennis warrior different from any other junior player is his mental approach. “He has the same skill level as other kids, but you’d never know if he was winning or losing by his even temperament,” says Ferri’s grandmother Betty Senske, with a smile. “You can’t teach attitude.” Senske shared her passion for the game with her grandson when he was around 5 years old. During bright, crisp summer days, the dynamic duo would develop Ferri’s stroke, hand and eye coordination, all while keeping score. They used a crack in Senske’s driveway to act as an imaginary net. Two years later, Senske knew her all-star grandson was ready to take his skills from the driveway to the court. She took him to Southlake Tennis Center, which, at the time, picked up on a distinctive program for junior players that most other centers hadn’t developed. QuickStart, also known as 10-and-under tennis, uses modified courts, balls and racquets to assist junior players in creating correct technique, movement and match play. Each student progresses through a series of color-coded levels based on mastering defined skills. There are five levels, ranging from red to blue. Junior players start at the red level and range from 4 to 8 years old. As they gain skills in a tech-

nically correct way, the players move on to the next color until they make it to the color blue, also known as the tournament level. “The QuickStart program gives players a chance to learn the same skills they will learn when they get to the big court, but at their own pace,” says Southlake Tennis Center General Manager Mia Gordon Poorman. “If you put a coach of Nathan’s caliber with players when they start out, you can build a solid foundation and create a better quality of players.” Ferri began at the red level when he first entered the program and is now a part of the yellow level team. Due to his unbeatable record, Southlake’s newest golden boy was chosen to represent the Texas section of the United States Tennis Association as part of a select team of junior players throughout the state. Undefeated, the team has competed in tournaments in Oklahoma, Texas and most recently, won the Border Battle against USTA Southwest. In preparation for tournaments, Brynes holds weekly private practices with Drake to develop his technical skills, game style, game play and tournament mentality to keep his reigning title in tact. Drake is one of the top five players in his age in the state because of the Southlake Tennis Center’s use of the QuickStart program and Ferri’s unique skill set. Endorsed by the USTA and professional tennis players such as Martina Navratilova and Andre Agassi, the QuickStart program strives to encourage more children to play the game. Ferri currently competes in tournaments throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and will attend tournaments for USTA throughout the year. “Things come naturally to him,” Senske says in a humble tone. “He has experienced the success that is a bit above average for most kids his age. Southlake Tennis Center has been such a positive influence on Drake, and we want to keep it fun for him.”

Boutique gyms are popping up everywhere. Instead of hitting the treadmill at Gold’s Gym or spinning at Planet Fitness, women are choosing to burn calories and tone muscle at smaller group fitness studios. The difference? Intimate class sizes with personal attention, high intensity workouts with less impact, and a slightly higher price tag. Take a look at three area boutique gyms, and learn the reasons why they continue to grow in popularity.

By Linden Wilson

In 2001, Carrie Rezabek Dorr started an informal group fitness class in her Michigan basement. Dorr, an instructor for dance, Pilates and other group classes, wanted to combine what she loved most about each of these disciplines into one effective exercise program. By 2009, Pure Barre was a franchise, and there are now 200 studios across the country with more opening each and every month. A total body workout that utilizes the ballet barre to perform small, isometric movements, Pure Barre focuses on the problem areas all women struggle with: seat, hips, thighs, abs and arms. The workout is designed to work imperative muscles to fatigue and then stretch them out, which creates a long, lean and strong physique. Classes are conducted in a highenergy atmosphere and are choreographed to motivating tunes. According to Southlake Pure Barre owner Lindsey White, the Pure Barre technique is extremely effective and produces results quickly, but it’s also low-impact and protects joints by avoiding bouncing and jumping. White opened the Southlake studio a little more than two years ago after falling in love with the technique. “Having danced my entire life, Pure Barre allows me to stay fit and have a positive impact in the community,” she says. “I cherish the relationships I have built with my staff and clients, and I look forward to

coming to work every day in my sticky socks.” Along with the sticky socks, Pure Barre clients wear capris or leggings (no shorts) and workout tops that cover the midriff in order to see faster results in flexibility. In addition to your own body weight, you only use small weights, a rubber ball and stretchy tube during class. Instructors, who walk throughout the studio to correct form, are passionate about dance and exercise and undergo demanding training in order to become teachers. “After undergoing interviews and auditions with Pure Barre studio owners, all teachers attend an intense training at one of Pure Barre’s corporate training facilities in either South Carolina or Colorado,” White says. “After a rigorous training weekend, there is a multistep test-out process that must be completed in order to become certified.” Pure Barre caters to everyone no matter what shape, size or age because of its safe, low-impact choreography — even pregnant women can complete classes well into their pregnancy. Pure Barre’s slogan, “life, tone, burn,” affectionately referred to as LTB by enthusiasts, reflects its mission: burning calories and gaining lean muscle through isolated exercises in a fun, friendly environment.

Pilates founder Joseph Pilates said, “A few welldesigned movements, properly performed in a balanced sequence, are worth hours of doing sloppy calisthenics or forced contortion.” Pilates, which creates long, lean muscle and toned bodies, is uniquely beneficial for anyone with physical limitations, and its integrity and effectiveness will likely keep it around long after other fitness trends fade away. After spending time as a student at Southlake’s Rhythm and Moves, Trilby Kuelbs became inspired to start her own Pilates studio. Purely Pilates Center opened in 2009 and continues to expand its clientele as experienced instructors keep the exercises safe and enjoyable for everyone. All instructors complete a Pilates teacher training program in which they invest about one year and more than 500 hours of teacher training, self-practice, observation and teaching. “Our instructors represent the finest Pilates certifications from all training programs,” says Megan

SOUTHLAKE STYLE

Purely Pilates Center

Burleson, an instructor at the center who also serves as its manager. “We pride ourselves in the variety of styles and training methods in our studio. With strong roots in the Pilates principles and contemporary knowledge of movement, we keep it fresh for our clients.” Burleson, who has been an instructor since 2005, joined Purely Pilates in 2011 after realizing that the staff at this location had evolved into her Pilates family. The center advocates centering, control, concentration, flow, breath and precision, and the workout equally improves your mind, body and spirit. “We feel our studio is the standard that others look to for inspiration,” Burleson says. “This is my passion, and I am on fire for this method of movement. It is beautiful, empowering and fulfilling. The results our clients feel and see speak volumes about their dedication and passion for Pilates. We strive to create a Pilates community, and I see that every day.”

With 13 locations already well established in California, this exercise method has migrated east with new studios in Utah, Tennessee and most recently, Southlake. CardioBarre is a high-energy, no-impact class that combines barre work and light weights with continual fat-burning motion that tones the butt, legs, torso and arms, sculpts muscles and elongates the appearance of the body. According to the Southlake location’s owner, Shannon Moore,

SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

CardioBarre strives to empower its clients to transform their lives through fitness, education, motivation and passion. She says it’s definitely not just another fitness class. “We hope our clients will take the sense of accomplishment and passion they get at CardioBarre and incorporate that into their daily lives,” Moore says. CardioBarre was originally founded by Richard Giorla, a choreographer, dancer and former Chippendale dancer and backup dancer for Michael Jackson. His dance career ended after he injured his hip, but he wanted to maintain an exercise routine that resembled the training he was accustomed to. In order to teach a CardioBarre class, instructors spend three weeks of rigorous training at the Studio City headquarters with Giorla and his training team. The classes will make you sweat — however, no dance experience is necessary to reap the full benefits of a CardioBarre workout. Plus, you can choose from introduction, beginner and advanced levels depending on what you’re comfortable with. You’re also in good company: Numerous Hollywood celebs have and continue to enjoy breaking a sweat at CardioBarre. A fun, energetic and fast-paced exercise session, it will challenge and motivate you in and outside the studio.

“The best way to prevent wrinkles is to use a good moisturizer, sunblock, and avoid smoking.” At his aesthetic plastic surgery practice, Dr. Michael Bogdan focuses solely on cosmetic surgery and specializes in facial rejuvenation, rhinoplasty and mommy makeovers (breast rejuvenation and tummy tuck procedures). He considers cosmetic surgery to be the “icing on the cake” — achieving personal goals that have not been attainable through healthy living, a well-balanced diet and exercise. Dr. Bogdan utilizes modern technology like the Vectra 3D imaging system, which he says “is an excellent adjunct to consultations for cosmetic procedures.” With the Vectra, patients are able to see how surgery could change their image during a consultation for breast, facial and rhinoplasty surgery. Having completed specialized fellowship training in cosmetic surgery and focusing 100 percent on cosmetic surgery makes Dr. Bogdan’s practice different from other plastic surgeons in the Metroplex. He is also a proud member of major plastic surgery organizations, including ISAPS, ASAPS, ASPS, TSPS, DSPS and the Rhinoplasty Society. On the Run BEY AND JAY TEAM UP FOR SUMMER TOUR HITTING DALLAS JULY 22

A

rguably music’s most powerful pair, R&B queen Beyoncé Knowles and rapper husband Jay-Z are joining forces for what is sure to be the best thing since sliced bread. The duo’s On the Run summer tour kicked off June 25 in Miami and will visit at least 16 other locations, including AT&T Stadium on July 22. While it’s uncertain what the superstar couple’s exact set list will be, their collaborations “Crazy in Love,” “Bonnie & Clyde,” “Déjà Vu,” “Upgrade U” and “Drunk in Love” are sure to be included. However, no matter what hits they elect to perform, the concert will undoubtedly be the most epic of the summer. Mr. and Mrs. Carter are no strangers to Texas — Beyoncé was born and raised in Houston, and the two were recently in Dallas: Jay-Z performed a show in December, and Beyoncé performed shows in July and December. The joint tour came after Beyoncé and Jay-Z finished their own solo tours, including The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour and the Magna Carter World Tour. The our name spins off form the song “Part II (On the Run)” and is the third single from Jay-Z’s 12th studio album, Magna Carta Holy Grail, in which his wife is featured.

Park Yourself Here SAVOR GASTROPUB

SAVOR GASTROPUB 2000 Woodall Rodgers Fwy. Dallas 214-306-5597 Savor-Relish.com/Savor

78 • JULY 14

Klyde Warren Park, built over Woodall Rodgers Fwy., connects Uptown and downtown Dallas in dramatic fashion. Open since late 2013, Savor Gastropub is a stunning all-glass restaurant situated on the north side, offering amazing views of the park and the Dallas Arts District. Savor is the primary park restaurant, although sister kiosk, Relish, is also located nearby. This new gastro pub, the creation of Executive Chef John Coleman — a 23-year veteran of the Ritz-Carlton chain of luxury hotels — offers simple, highquality dishes using fresh, locally sourced items in order to create a vibrant dining experience. The new green oasis in the center of Dallas provides the ideal setting for diners to experience the flavorful menu. As you enter the restaurant, you will notice its wide-open feel, both inside and outside. If you look up, you’ll notice mesh ceiling panels with screen-printed patterns of leaves that have indirect flood lighting, which gives off a diffused glow at night. The entire kitchen, bar and mechanicals are housed in the center of the restaurant, leaving all four walls as floor-to-ceiling glass walls. The bar

features curves as the primary design element with a wire-suspended liquor shelf sitting above the counter. There are additional bar height counters featuring lights atop stainless steel poles every few feet. The dining area includes high-backed loveseats along the glass walls with a front row view of the park and the stunning architecture of the Arts District just beyond the park’s edge. We dined during lunch hour on a weekend, so our choices reflect that menu. We began with the Skinny Dips — small dipping bowls of house-made hummus, tomato basil and pimento cheese with warm, fresh flatbread to dip into each or to use as a platform to spread the dips. The hummus and the tomato basil dip were solid, but the pimento cheese was the definite winner. Freshly shredded and prepared, it is much better than what you will find in your local market. For one of our main entrées, we chose Savor’s version of the classic French croque-madame sandwich served open-faced with shaved ham, stout beer-soaked Gruyere cheese, a fried egg and a delicious Mornay sauce (melted half Gruyere and half Parmesan cheese). sandwich is a decadent choice with rich flavors and really hits the spot for lunch or brunch. It pairs very well with a mimosa. Our other selection, based on a recommendation from our server, was the Cornbread Crab Cake Sandwich. It is a traditional crab cake made with fresh Jonah and blue crab meat topped with an apple slaw on a salt and pepper bun. I paired this sandwich with a handmade cocktail, the Texas Peach, made of peach bourbon, lemon juice, orange Curacao, ginger and hard cider. The drink stood up well to the strong flavors yet was still light enough as a brunch beverage. Savor is definitely a dining destination where you don’t want to miss out on dessert, so save room for one of their unique offerings. You can mix and match based on the size of your group so everyone can try something different. Foodie Fellow choice: the Nostalgic Cookies and Milk featuring a chocolate-covered, house-made “Oreo”, nutter butter and an oatmeal cream pie paired with an ice-cold glass of milk. We ordered two of these delights — don’t miss out on this twist on classic cookie favorites. This is an ideal spot for a date night or a night out with good friends. I hope you choose to visit Savor in Dallas soon and enjoy the views around the restaurant as well as the view of the amazing dishes served each day.

On its menu: signature items like glazed walnut shrimp, Asian eggplant and ginger beef tenderloin, as well as handcrafted cocktails, premium sake and Asian beers like Hue lager. Enjoy your meal inside the restaurant or on the outdoor patio, or if you’re hosting a party, entertain your guests in the private dining room that comfortably seats 30. Howard Wang’s recently launched its summer wine and craft cocktail list, and in April, it unveiled a catering program and weekday lunch delivery service, which is open to anyone within three miles. If you’re in search of a new place to do happy hour this summer, look no further. Dubbed “Hang With Wang,” Howard Wang’s happy hour lasts from 3 to 6 p.m. every Monday through Friday and boasts these can’t-pass-up specials: $1 dim sum and hot sake, $2 draft beers, $3 well drinks and $4 select wines.

Juiced Up Get your greens at Nékter Juice Bar Turning your passion into a business is a feat only few accomplish, and Steve and Alexis Schulze are certainly among those few. Avid juicers with a great enthusiasm for healthy living, the California couple opened their first Nékter Juice Bar in Costa Mesa in 2011. Within days, the line was continually wrapped around the block, and the Schulzes knew they had created something special. The successful franchise now operates 21 other California locations, including Laguna Beach, Santa Monica and Irvine, in addition to two Arizona stores and one in Dallas’ Snider Plaza. This past March, Nékter opened in Southlake, and it’s quickly gained a health-conscious following. The best thing about Nékter is its healthy menu. All juices, smoothies and Açaí bowls are made from 100 percent organic, vegan ingredients sourced in Texas and California. All recipes originated in Alexis Schulze’s kitchen. “I used my friends and family as guinea pigs,” she says. “Even my kids helped me make the Orange Crush! It was fun but very messy. As for the names — that was actually the difficult part. I’m a little silly, so they have a little of that personality in there.” According to Jim Ballard, vice president of the Texas region and Steve Schulze’s brother-in-law, the most popular smoothie is the Pink Flamingo. A combination of pitaya, pineapple, strawberries, coconut water and a splash of agave, the drink transforms into the most vibrant magenta hue when blended on ice. Another customer favorite is the Chocolate Dream smoothie, a delicious mix of house-made cashew nut milk, cacao, carob, dates, avocado and a dash of agave. Juices like the signature Greenie (parsley, spinach, kale, celery, cucumber, lemon and apple) and the Toxin Flush (parsley, spinach, apples, lemon and ginger) are packed with nutrient-rich vegetables that help rid the body of toxins. To prepare the drinks, the 14-person Southlake staff blends the veggies and other nutritious ingredients in top-of-the-line Zumex juicers, which are manufactured in Spain and valued at $2,500 apiece. Nékter also carries two cleanses, classic and advanced, which are offered in one-, two-, three- and five-day packages.

Designed to allow the body to re-set, the classic cleanse consists of six drinks with individual benefits like detoxifying antibodies and clearing toxins from the colon. The advanced is for the, well, more advanced juicer who’s not afraid of a more leafy taste. It also consists of six drinks that help purify, energize and deliver essential vitamins and nutrients to the body. After a well-attended grand opening celebration on June 20, Nékter is poised to become one of Southlake’s most popular summer hangouts.

Blended Beauty Atalon Winery Sauvignon Blanc 2012 The term “Bordeaux-style” is generally used to reference wine made from a blend of grapes from the Bordeaux region of France. However, skilled vintners like Brian Kosi of Atalon Winery in the Napa Valley often make versions outside of France. Kosi’s passion for sourcing grapes from the furthest reaches of the Napa Valley has resulted in a well-known complexity for both his red and white wines. Of particular note is Atalon’s 2012 Sauvignon Blanc — a dry, crisp wine, blended with 3 percent Semillon. Sourced from four primary vineyards, including Oak Knoll and St. Helena, the blend is fermented in stainless steel, but partially aged in neutral oak barrels. Rated 92 points by Wine Enthusiast, this wine has a distinctive pale straw color and clean citrus, lemon, gooseberry and lychee nut flavor that is the perfect complement to the many warm summer nights of Texas.

Pack Up For Portland

Royal Pavilion

THERE’S PLENTY TO SEE AND DO IN THE LARGEST CITY IN OREGON

L

ike the well-known Texas city of Austin, Portland is known for its liberal political views, endless amount of outdoor activities (walking, biking, hiking, you name it) and quirky boutiques and coffee shops. Unlike Austin, Portland is situated in the Pacific Northwest, one of the most beautiful stretches of land in the country. Its lush greenery mixed with urban landscape, proximity to both the coast and Mount Hood and the fact that it sits near the merging of the Columbia and Willamette rivers make it a prime destination for tourists. Oh, and it offers tax-free shopping and is home to the world-famous Voodoo Doughnuts. Need we say more?

Where to Stay In the heart of bustling downtown is the Hotel Lucia, a quiet retreat that’s mere steps from prime shopping, dining and various Portland attractions. This hotel is equal parts comfort and luxury, and it also displays a collection of black-and-white photography from Pulitzer Prize winner (and native Oregonian) David Hume Kennedy. Unlike other places where you can rest your head in the city, Hotel Lucia offers several upscale amenities, like a pillow menu (choose from a range of specialty pillow types), spiritual menu (borrow any number of available books of faith) and iPod menu (borrow an iPod preloaded with tunes based on your choice of music genre). The Monaco, a luxury boutique hotel also found in downtown Portland, includes 221 spacious guestrooms and suites, each of which comes with a yoga mat upon arrival, free of charge. From a one-hour wine reception and complimentary morning coffee to a 24-hour business center and same-day laundry and dry cleaning services, the staff at the Monaco ensures personal care and service for each of its guests HotelLucia.com, Monaco-Portland.com

portland When it comes time for a night on the town, Portland boasts a plethora of live music venues, comedy clubs and performances halls worth checking out, particularly the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, located in downtown. The hall prominently features the Oregon Symphony and Oregon Ballet Theatre and also welcomes major music acts throughout the year. Meanwhile, the Helium Comedy Club draws touring A-list professionals as well as fresh local talent in an intimate 275-seat theater. OregonZoo.org, Orhf.org, Portland5.com, TravelPortland.com

What to Do Portland in autumn is not to be missed. Take full advantage of its picturesque landscapes and experience one of the many fall music, art and food festivals, like MusicfestNW, Art in the Pearl, Feast Portland and Portland Fashion Week, each in September. Or, once October rolls around, take in a Portland Trail Blazers game, and check out the Great American Distillers Festival, an annual celebration of craft distilling and the country’s premier gathering of distillers. If you have the kids in tow, there’s no shortage of familyfriendly events to do throughout the city. Namely, the Oregon Zoo — the oldest in the West — which houses more than 2,000 animals. It’s located only a few minutes from downtown in beautiful Washington Park, a gorgeous urban wilderness featuring gardens and museums. If you’ve got little ones, they’ll probably love Portland’s public fountains as well as the numerous parks that include playgrounds. Sellwood Park playgrounds are surrounded by giant trees and rhododendron bushes and feature ample seesaws, swings, slides and more. Additionally, the Oregon Rail Heritage Center — a free museum — showcases a collection of vintage steam locomotives. Train enthusiasts (any Sheldon Coopers out there?) will love seeing the Southern Pacific Daylight Locomotive 4449, which traveled between Los Angeles and San Francisco in the 1940s. It also pulled the American Freedom Train that toured the country for the 1976 Bicentennial.

SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

The Great Outdoors Whether you’re a runner, bicyclist, hiker, golfer or canoeist, Portland offers something for everyone in its vast outdoor space. Forest Park features 70 miles of trails all within the city’s limits. At more than 5,100 acres, it’s a hotspot for avid athletes, including equestrians, and houses more than 100 bird species and 60 mammal species. Approximately 40 minutes south of downtown is Dream Ridge Stables, any horseback rider’s sanctuary. It’s surrounded by forest and has the backdrop of Mt. Hood, making it the ideal getaway for a peaceful and scenic ride. For all you golf lovers, going green has never been easier than in Portland. Hit the links at Golf Digest favorite Heron Lakes Golf Course, a public course designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., that offers varying degrees of difficulty to challenge players of all skill levels. Or, escape 20 miles northwest of the city to Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club, host of the 2003 U.S. Women’s Open, whose public and private courses offer striking landscapes. Opt to see Portland from the seat of your bike when you explore the 300-plus bike lanes, paths and low-traffic streets, appropriately named bike boulevards. If you’re in search of a guided tour, Pedal Bike Tours offers tours of downtown, Portland wine country and the Columbia River Gorge, while Cycle Portland Bike Tours ride around various bridges, breweries and parks. In the mood for a more leisurely experience? Hiking is one of the most popular Portland activities as the city and its surrounding areas are extremely pedestrian-friendly. Be sure to visit the Tryon Creek State Park in southwest Portland — the 670-acre forest offers a staffed nature center plus dozens of winding trails and meandering steams. The difference is in the care.

REAL PATIENTS. REAL STORIES.

When our two boys joined the family, so did Baylor.

“I have suffered from migraines for years until I started chiropractic care. I have not had a migraine in over 6 years due to regular adjustments. My headaches are less frequent and my general health is better. The doctors at 180 are the best and most accurate in their care. I always feel comfortable and at ease knowing they are the best. The ladies at the front desk are always so friendly and welcoming. They have so many wonderful ideas and knowledgeable information on how to improve your health. Love my 180 team of chiropractic professionals!” -Bonnie Billingsley

Christian Reynolds and her husband Jacob were expecting twins. What they weren’t expecting was to add a dozen Baylor staff members to their family circle. But when their twins arrived three months early at less than three pounds each, the newborns received specialized treatment at the Baylor Regional Medical Center at Grapevine Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Over the next 11 weeks, the Reynolds developed a lasting friendship with the infants’ caregivers. “The NICU was like our home away from home,” says Christian. “They’re our heroes and part of our family.”

The Thrill of the Grill 2015 CADILLAC ESCALADE

fter first hitting the streets during the SUV boom of the late ‘90s, the Cadillac Escalade, just like many of its North Texas neighbors, has enjoyed a successful run of luxury upgrades. Starting with the embellishments at the Texas Rangers’ Globe Life Park and the recent lunar landing of Jerry Jones’ AT&T Stadium, Arlington is not only home to America’s team but also to the General Motors Assembly Plant and their entire line of full-size SUVs. Built just minutes away from Southlake, Westlake and Colleyville, the Cadillac Escalade has been enjoyed for years by many area carpools. A gleaming redesign for 2015 will only further its highly polished persona. The vehicle’s sophisticated stance and curb appeal is immediately identifiable as “Escalade” thanks to a host of standard and premium exterior features. LED lighting, power-retractable assist steps, a rear lift gate spoiler and optional 22-inch wheels set off a luxurious look and feel across the decisively sculpted, mirror-like surfaces of its nearly 17-foot body. Yet even those new to the game can’t help but notice

that it’s the chrome that shines brightest. New to the Escalade is the use of Galvano chrome, which has a more subtle, bright finish than standard chrome. Highly complex is the process of applying the Galvano finish, but it’s truly the thrill of the grill (and those shiny 22s) that sets the Escalade apart from the pack. It’s the same attention to detail that can be found throughout one of the most well appointed cabins around. Though technologically advanced with the Cadillac Cue Information and Media system, 16-speaker Bose Centerpoint Surround Sound and standard navigation, it’s the crafted layering of authentic natural elm and walnut woods, premium cut and sewn Mulan leather and touches of ambient lighting that add the next level of extreme elegance. Passengers, too, will feel like VIPs thanks to second row reclining and heated leather seats, tri-zone climate control and a spacious power folding third row. A powerful and versatile 6.2-liter V-8 engine rounds out a stunningly capable and comfortable ride that is made in and coveted by all of North Texas.

ASK THE COLLEGE COACH Stef Mauler

Stef Mauler is an independent educational consultant. She has an MBA from Harvard Business School, a BA from University of Pennsylvania, and a Certificate in College Counseling from UC San Diego.

Dear College Coach: I just finished my freshman year of college and I’m not happy with the choice I made. I do not want to return in the fall but I also don’t want to spend a year at community college. Are there any colleges that are still accepting transfer applications? -Struggling Sophomore Dear Struggling: I’m sorry to hear you are not happy with your choice of college. Fortunately, there are still many great colleges accepting applications for the fall. For a list, you can go to the Common Application member search https://www.commonapp.org/Login#!s/Me mberLookup Dear College Coach: What is a gap year?

-Exploring Options

Dear Exploring: A gap year is a year between high school and college that students take to enrich themselves before continuing formal academic studies. Very common in Europe, gap years are now gaining popularity in the US. They can include a variety of activities such as pursuing a talent or interest, learning a language, getting a job or internship, volunteering and traveling. A gap year should enhance a student’s knowledge, experiences and maturity; a gap year should not be a boondoggle or a year to hang around the house. If you are considering a gap year before college, I recommend you outline your goals for your gap year and design activities and experiences that will help you achieve those goals.
