We all learn life lessons throughout childhood. Whether it’s how to study during elementary school or how to embody good sportsmanship during T-ball, the little things evolve into the big things that shape us. Ride With Pride founder Doreen Bruton, featured in “Southlake Reins,” not only knows this but also provides various learning opportunities to kids across the Metroplex through her riding lessons. During each session, kids start to understand the importance of empathy. While her students learn the mechanics behind riding, they also see how to care for something other than themselves. And in turn, those horses provide unconditional love for their riders. LED founder Laura Durant also knows the power love can provide and aspires to show all students they have a support system in Southlake. Learn more about her mission in “Loving Every Dragon.” Southlake Police Chief James Brandon, who you can read more about in this month’s “Five Minutes With,” experienced the power of empathy last summer when he had to step away from his post due to a cancer diagnosis. After he returned in the fall, he was overwhelmed with the outpouring of compassion and encouragement he received from not just city staff but the community at large. Now cancer-free, Chief Brandon says he’s more inspired than ever to serve Southlake. While empathy takes on different forms, its core remains the same — understanding where someone is coming from, being sensitive to their situation and seeing things from their perspective. It’s the superpower we can all benefit from. Happy reading!

The Sound Of Musicals
B
roadway fanatics know Lin-Manuel Miranda never throws away his shot. And with his debut production “In The Heights” finally hitting theaters this month, musical lovers no longer have to wait for it. But before seeing Anthony Ramos take on the vibrant role, let’s look at other big-time stars who stole our hearts with the power of music. When he’s not busy playing Wolverine, Hugh Jackman shines in “Les Miserables” and “The Greatest Showman.” So does John Travolta in “Grease,” although he plays a much different character in the film version of “Hairspray.” Rob Marshall, who is directing the live-action “Little Mermaid” remake, helmed the classic musical “Cabaret,” the film adaptation of “Chicago” and the sequel “Mary Poppins Returns,” which sadly doesn’t feature Julie Andrews. He also directed Meryl Streep on screen in “Into The Woods.” It’s definitely a more grim performance than her take on Donna in “Mamma Mia!” Classic rags-to-riches tales like “Annie” and “A Star Is Born” prove to be timeless, even with the seemingly endless remakes that release every decade. But contemporary musicals like “Pitch Perfect,” “High School Musical” and “La La Land” boast modern flair, while the cast of “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” provides fresh covers of the newest hits, similar to what “Glee” did back in the day. But not every musical is as uplifting. Some offer sobering doses of reality like “The Sound of Music,” “The Last Five Years” and “Rent,” while others offer a darker twist on stage like “Sweeney Todd” and “The Phantom of the Opera.” Whether you’re ready for a good cry or to seize the day like the impressive “Newsies” dancers, there’s a musical waiting for you.

Seasonal Travel Trends
What To Know Before Flocking To DFW International Airport After a year and a half of social distancing and sparse road trips, many see this summer as the light at the end of the wanderlust tunnel. The 2021 “Vrbo Trend Report” shows 82% of surveyed families already have travel plans for 2021, and 65% plan on traveling more than they did preCOVID. See how locals are adapting to 2021 travel guidelines and where they are planning to vacation.
Vaccination Reassurance
While many locals were actively traveling through 2020 and the early portion of 2021, the release of the COVID-19 vaccines helped those on the fence feel more confident about booking vacations. In travel insurance and assistance provider Allianz Partners’ recent USA survey, 67% of respondents said a COVID-19 vaccine will make them feel safe enough to travel again. The CDC updated its traveling recommendations this spring, stating fully vaccinated individuals can safely travel within the United States, do not need to get tested before or after travel unless the destination requires it and do not need to self-quarantine. These extra liberties and the promise of prospective herd immunity gave many the boost they needed to book the getaway they’ve been dreaming about.
Eyes On Hot Destinations
Local travel agent Brenda Tosso says she saw some hesitancy start to form earlier this year when airports required a negative test for entry back into the U.S. But people are growing more comfortable with the new policy.
14 • JUN 21
Brenda says she’s booking domestic trips for locals everywhere from national parks and dude ranches to farther locales like Hawaii and Alaska. Those preferences seem to match national trends; Orlando, Maui, Honolulu, Seattle and Anchorage made up Allianz Partners’ top five 2021 domestic travel destinations. But Brenda says several popular areas are already booking up, so under-the-radar locations like North Carolina, Florida’s east coast and upstate New York are providing escapes for those looking for last-minute vacations. And if you’re thinking about waiting to book any holiday vacations, don’t. Popular destinations’ November and December reservations are already stacking up.
Farther Excursions
Many travelers are booking transcontinental flights, with others’ eyes on farther horizons. The CDC requires a negative test before international travelers arrive back in the U.S., but that isn’t slowing some down. Travel and insurance company International Medical Group (IMG)’s “Future of Travel Survey” found 71% of its respondents plan to travel internationally in 2021, with 49% expecting to embark prior to September. Both the CDC and the U.S. government are asking travelers to use caution. In April, the State Department announced approximately 80% of countries will carry a level 4, do not travel, advisory. “CNN” reported earlier that month that only about 16% of countries had that rating prior to the change. Whether she’s planning an excursion in Greece, an Alaskan cruise for 2022 or a quick trip to Montana, Brenda says she sees it all. “Everyone is going to the destination they are the most comfortable with,” Brenda says. “People are ready to go somewhere.” SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

UNDERSTATED ELEGANCE SCH Homes Builds Toward The Future Of Luxury Living
W
hen founder Scott Simmons started SCH Homes more than 30 years ago, he set the standard for collaborative homebuilding and luxury living. Today, partners Neal Calhoun and Jon Hebb build toward the future as they continue SCH Homes’ long-standing legacy. Joining the company in 2012 and 2007 respectively, Neal and Jon pride themselves in crafting homes and relationships throughout the area. Closely collaborating with their clients to bring their vision to life, Neal and Jon strike a unique balance of warm and elegant spaces with meticulous attention to architectural and design details. “The product we produce is such high quality,” Neal expresses. “Most people are blown away when they walk into our homes for the first time. Everything is unique; everything is one-off; everything we do is custom to the client. There’s not a lot of things that we do from job to job that are the same.” Because of this, collaboration is one of the most important aspects of SCH Homes’ handiwork. Neal and Jon work across a whole spectrum of trade partners, designers, architects and engineers to construct their high-quality custom homes. “Together, we maximized our strengths and always pushed to the next level of excellence,” Jon says. “We elevated the teamwork atmosphere and created a honed development process that engages the client.” Their work speaks for itself. With more than 90% of their business generated through personal referrals, Neal and Jon pride themselves in knowing their clients are so happy with their hard work that they want to share it with their friends, family and neighbors. “To be able to say our home-building process is so successful that people actively talk about it and drive

business is a pretty big deal,” Neal says. “It’s a big responsibility. These are people’s dream homes, and most people plan living here for the rest of their lives.” Interested buyers can see SCH Homes up close for themselves at any of their four neighborhoods in the Southlake and Westlake area. Quail Hollow has lush green hills and trees that you can see while driving on the Vaquero Golf Club, while the Stony Brook gated community offers native trees, ponds, a park and a creek. Granada connects the Westlake community through large public spaces and privately maintained trails; all are minutes away from Southlake Town Square’s shopping and dining scene. So whether you’re looking for elite luxury, custom craftsmanship or state-of-the-art design, SCH Homes has the house of your dreams waiting for you. It’s only one call away to start building toward it.

RIDE WITH PRIDE, AMY’S WISH WITH WINGS INSTILLS ITS STUDENTS WITH LIFELONG SKILLS BY ASHLEY BRADSHAW PHOTOS BY EMILEE PRADO
M
any Southlake families with little riding boots in the back of their closets have one woman to thank for countless hours of outdoor fun: Ride With Pride owner and Amy’s Wish With Wings executive director Doreen Bruton. What started as a high school side gig has grown to become one of Southlake’s longest legacies. Over the past 40 years, Doreen has built a career out of teaching kids not only how to ride but also how to care for others. FINDING HER REINS Doreen grew up passionate about horses. At age 5, she continuously asked her dad to buy her a pony she could ride around their Southlake property. “I just loved horses,” Doreen says. “My grandfather was in the World War I cavalry, so I guess I got it from that line. I just had blinders on, and that’s all I wanted to do.” After wearing him down, he came home with a $25 pony named Lady, who was not the friendliest pet, but Doreen was ecstatic to have a horse of her own. “Lady should have deterred me, but she made me the rider I am today,” she says. SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE
Doreen spent her childhood in 4-H and caring for various animals. In 1980, the Carroll High School junior aspired to rodeo, so she started teaching classes to the neighborhood kids for $5 an hour — because it cost $10 to rodeo — under the name Ride With Pride. After quickly growing her business from 25 riders a week to 100, Doreen was hooked. Her parents were very supportive of her budding business. Her dad even built her a barn on the 6-acre property on West Highland Street, which Ride With Pride still uses today. “So many people who still come out to our property say, ‘We didn’t know that this was here,’” Doreen says. “It’s a beautiful place that feels serene, tranquil.” Once Doreen graduated from Carroll, she enrolled at Texas Tech University. But she came home on the weekends to continue teaching riding lessons. She soon realized that her business was booming, and she needed to move back to Southlake to fully invest her time in teaching. On top of weekly classes, Doreen started to host Ride With Pride summer programs for local kids. Campers would ride, complete crafts and play games as well as help around the barn with chores like cleaning the stalls and learning how to care for the farm’s animals. Former Ride With Pride student-turned-instructor and current volunteer Sheri Sutton grew up taking lessons in the ’80s. What started as an after-school activity transformed her life, so she knows how important these classes are for students. “Kids who come out and ride feel like they’re a valuable part of the community that’s out there,” Sheri says. “It also teaches them responsibility. You learn to care for something besides yourself, and our kids learn a lot of empathy.” Sheri left Ride With Pride as an instructor to pursue her education degree, but after having kids of her own years later, it was only natural they attended Ride With Pride camps. Sheri says her daughter Abbie immediately connected to the program. “I never pushed her, but she just gravitated toward it like I did,” Sheri says. “It was heartwarming to see she had such a positive experience with Ride With Pride, just like me.” At a young age, Abbie experienced selective mutism, so the classes helped boost her confidence and find a place where she could open up. “I had a lot of fears when I was little,” Abbie says. “This was the only thing I felt comfortable doing.” Once Abbie turned 14, she also started working at the barn for Doreen, helping her clean out stalls and see after the horses. After progressing through the ranks over the years, the 20-year-old now acts as an instructor and teaches 3- to 5-year-olds. “Doreen’s barn was instrumental in helping Abbie find her voice,” Sheri says. “It has been fun to see her build friendships out there like I did.” ADDING AMY’S WISH Sheri and Abbie act as one example of Ride With Pride’s legacy. But they are not the only ones who have relied on the school over the years. Amy Stefanko also started taking classes with Doreen at a young age. But after being diagnosed with leukemia before turning 5 and suffering from life-threatening mediSOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

cal emergencies like a brain aneurysm and several strokes, Amy had to stop taking classes. While she was in Cook Children’s transitional care unit, Amy’s care team introduced her to therapeutic horse riding, which reminded Amy of her time with Ride With Pride. Equine therapy provides both physical benefits like building core strength and moving different parts of the body — because a horse’s gait closely resembles a human’s — as well as mental and emotional benefits like reducing stress, increasing problem-solving skills and boosting self-esteem. “It was one of those stimulus things that helped her progress and helped her feel better,” Amy’s dad Ed says. After returning home, the Stefankos would run into Doreen around Southlake, and Amy would continue to ask when she could come back and ride. Doreen first had to say no because Ride With Pride was not equipped with the right certifications to offer therapeutic horse riding. But after listening to Amy’s wishes, Doreen pursued the correct certification so Amy could return. In 2011 with a PATH certification in hand, Doreen founded Amy’s Wish With Wings, a 501(c)(3) focused on providing equine-assisted activities for children with special needs. Amy, along with a handful of other students, came out every Saturday for their sessions, where they would ride, play games and lend a helping hand. “It’s something she looks forward to every week,” Ed says. “It gives her an activity and she just loves being around horses.” Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Amy’s Wish With Wings was up to 50 students. Whether these aspiring riders are living with autism, cerebral palsy or are vision impaired, Doreen works with them to help them find success. The nonprofit operates thanks to the support of dedicated staff members, donors and volunteers, who do everything from prepping the horses and acting as side walkers (the wings) to setting up games for the students. “Amy has a lot of pride that it’s named after her,” Ed says. “From starting out with an, ‘OK you can ride with me’ and seeing the huge impact it's had, it brings tears to my eyes to see these children and young adults progress.” Doreen says she’s watched students make immense strides over the past 10 years. “I’ve seen miracles,” Doreen says. “I’ve seen two children get out of wheelchairs after a year of working with them. I’ve seen children speak their first words. It gives me chills every time I think about it.” Each student comes in with different objectives, but Doreen and the Ride With Pride team help them set goals and work toward overcoming obstacles. “Life is hard, and it’s really hard when your body doesn’t do what you want it to or if you feel you are different,” Sheri says. “But here, it’s a neutral ground. A horse gives you unconditional love. There are no questions asked. And when our kids verbalize goals and do it, they have such a tremendous sense of accomplishment.” Doreen strives to provide constant encouragement for her students. “Doreen is the first one to say, ‘That’s the best I’ve seen [Amy] ride,’” Ed says. “She’s always looking at the positive things.”
SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM
TROTTING TOWARD THE FUTURE Similar to other extracurricular activities and summer camps, Ride With Pride shut down its services once COVID-19 hit in 2020. “It gave the horses a nice vacation — everyone got to rest,” Doreen says. But now, Doreen says she’s busier than ever, with summer programs filling up with both regular students and newcomers eager to get out and try a new activity. “It’s the best kept secret in Southlake,” Doreen says. “But now I guess the secret is out.” On top of the summer camps, Ride With Pride is also prepping for its annual fundraiser, Bobbyfest. The event, which was first held six years ago, usually takes place in the spring, but the 2021 event will be hosted at The Marq on October 9. While the event is set to entertain thanks to its live music, food trucks and silent auction items, Doreen says it will also ensure that the nonprofit can survive another year. Despite the 24/7 labor and time commitment, Doreen is not slowing down anytime soon. “That’s why you don’t see too many big cowgirls — because they work so hard,” Doreen says. “My goal is to make it to 50 years, and my hope and dream is that someone takes it and carries it on for another 50 years.” Thankfully her son Grady also has a passion for the work. “He’s such a good instructor; he’s so patient and kind,” Doreen says. Through it all, Doreen says watching both the Ride With Pride and Amy’s Wish With Wings students keeps her going. “Seeing the smiles on their faces when they get on the horse for the first time or accomplish a goal they’ve been working on makes it worth it,” she says. As both a Ride With Pride instructor and an Amy’s Wish With Wings volunteer, Abbie has seen countless students’ faces light up during lessons. “We give kids the ability to get outside and relax and know there’s nothing to worry about,” Abbie says. “They can just have fun.” After spending a year locked up inside with extended screen time, Sheri knows summer camp participants will walk away with more than riding skills. “It’s really a place where you can step back in time into that farm life,” Sheri says. “So many of our kids, especially with COVID, spent time on electronics, and here it’s all about being outside and in the sunshine. Kids can see you can put your phone away and still have a good time.” Through the past four decades, Doreen has seen riding schools close and Southlake continue to bring in new development opportunities, making Ride With Pride an anomaly. So Doreen believes the program’s prosperity is more valuable than its history. “Southlake needs this place more in the future than in the past,” Doreen says. “We are getting covered up in concrete. There’s only a few places like mine left.” Thankfully despite the exciting opportunities continuing to come into town, Southlake still has this hidden gem to call its own.

MAPPING YOUR TAX FUTURE OpenAir Advisers Helps Organize Your Financial Assets
M
ost people look at retirement accounts in terms of the money they can earn rather than the taxes they’ll have to pay. But by mapping your assets and establishing a tax-efficient withdrawal strategy, you can pay reduced taxes, earn more money and potentially add up to six years of income to your retirement portfolio. Knowing which type of retirement income you have helps you better understand how they’re taxed differently. For instance, 15-100% of your social security income can be received tax free. Joint savings and brokerage accounts can be taxed at a lower rate, and money taken out of traditional retirement accounts could be your biggest tax liability. Each of these accounts have pros and cons from a tax standpoint. When you understand what they are, you can position your assets among them, reduce taxes and earn returns without taking on additional market risk. It’s also important to understand which tax bracket you belong to and how it affects how much you owe. Your lowest tax bracket years are usually during early retirement, while your highest usually occur when your required minimum distribution (RMD) kicks in at 72 and forces you to take more money out of your account. Having a good strategy in your low-bracket years helps reduce your taxes during your high bracket years down the road. With proper planning, you can lower your future taxes, Medicare premiums and the amount your social security is taxed. And when it comes to your RMD, there are several techniques you can use to minimize its effects. If you make charitable donations, contribute directly from your retirement account to fulfill all or a portion of your RMD. If you implement a strategy now that addresses future tax liabilities, you’ll be on your way to a well-rounded retirement plan.

MASKS OPTIONAL AT CARROLL ISD STARTING THIS MONTH Masks are now optional for all Carroll ISD students and staff. During the student services portion of the board of trustees’ regular meeting on May 3, the COVID-19 response team provided an updated recommendation to the district to make masks optional after the 2020-2021 school year wrapped. The response team also recommended that the 6-foot social distancing requirement be reduced to 3 feet if both parties wear masks and clarified that students can remove their masks while seated or participating in physical education. With STARR and AP testing, CISD Superintendent Dr. Lane Ledbetter stated during the meeting there was no logistical way to change the policy sooner than June. “All of those students would need time to transition back to virtual learning,” Dr. Ledbetter says. “It’s not just something that we can change tomorrow.” The board approved the updated mask policy 5-0.

GIRLS LACROSSE EARNS SECOND PLACE AT STATE The Lady Dragons earned second place at the state tournament after falling to Hockaday 14-11 in the championship game. “I am so incredibly proud of how far our team has come this year and how much we've grown together on and off the field. Our girls left every last bit of energy on the field on Sunday, and we truly fought hard till the last whistle,” head coach Morgan McDonald says. “Of course, we're sad about the final result, but we're ready for the 2022 season to begin and to get to work!” Following the end of the season, several of the Lady Dragons earned recognition. Four players — Sophie Patton, Logan Risenhoover, Kaileigh Wallace and Landry Risenhoover — were named to the Texas Girls High School Lacrosse League (TGHSLL) Division 1 All-State Team. Lady Dragons Katelyn Sclafani, Brooke Jones and Ava Valdez also earned recognition, being named to the TGHSLL Division 1 All-District Team. “The future of our Lady Dragon Lacrosse Program is very bright!” Morgan says. “We will miss our seniors so much. CASA OF TARRANT COUNTY PLANTS 150 PINWHEELS IN SOUTHLAKE TOWN SQUARE CASA Of Tarrant County helped 150 abused children in Northeast Tarrant County last year, and it has the pinwheels to prove it. In observation of National Child Abuse Prevention Month in April, CASA Of Tarrant County planted 150 blue pinwheels in the middle of Southlake Town Square, one for every child it helped in Northeast Tarrant County in 2020. “It’s meant to have that visual impact,” director of development Natalie Stalmach says. "Rather than a sign that just says ‘150,’ it shows what that actually looks like so you can visualize that these are real children. We need more advocates to speak up for these children so they don’t get lost through the cracks. It’s all our problem, whether we want to acknowledge that or not.”

CARROLL ISD HIRES NEW COORDINATOR OF SPECIAL EDUCATION Carroll ISD has a new coordinator leading its special education programs. According to the district, Aaron Heil has worked in education for more than 22 years, with 16 of those years serving Carroll ISD. He started working in Carroll ISD in 2005 as the social, emotional and academic learning teacher, a role he continued to serve until he became the special education facilitator in 2019. That was the same year he earned his master’s in special education administration from Southeastern Oklahoma State University and certifications in secondary physical education and generic special education. As the coordinator of special education, Aaron will oversee programs such as adapted physical education, psychological services and music, occupational and speech therapy. He will also collaborate with other department heads to improve special programs overall. FORMER DRAGON SIGNS WITH THE HOUSTON TEXANS Former Carroll Dragon Carson Green is headed to the NFL. After going undrafted, the Texas A&M offensive lineman signed as a free agent with the Houston Texans. “I am fired up about getting to be a Texan. Again, I am just thankful that I get to be somewhere close to home where my family can continue watching me play,” Carson says. “I cannot wait to help the organization with anything that is asked of me.” Carson says watching the draft on TV was a long day. “I knew there were a handful of teams that were interested in me and I had communicated with during the past few months,” he says. “I am extremely happy that the Texans selected me and that I can stay in Texas to keep playing football.” Now signed with the Texans, Carson reported to rookie minicamp last month. “I just want to thank the Southlake community for all the wishes this past week and over the years,” Carson says. During his tenure at Texas A&M, Carson started every game since his sophomore year and in his senior year was named a Second Team All-SEC right tackle. Carson was also named to Southlake Style's All-Decade Team. As a Dragon, Carson served as captain and was named to the All-District First Team.

CARROLL ALUM’S DOCUMENTARY SHORT WINS AT SANTA BARBARA FILM FESTIVAL Adam Henderson never expected his time at Carroll ISD to launch him into a well-respected film editing career. More than 15 years later, his newest project is making the rounds on the film festival circuit. After graduating from Carroll ISD in 2004, Adam enrolled in the University of North Texas’ radio, television and film program and edited everything he could, from shorts and feature films to documentaries and even music videos. In 2019, film director and colleague Richard Reens approached him about editing his short film “Pant Hoot,” a documentary about a man named Stany Nyandwi who could communicate with chimpanzees by speaking their language. The film was released to critical praise, winning four festival awards including “Best Documentary Short” at the Santa Barbara Film Festival.

CARROLL ROBOTICS QUALIFIES FOR VEX WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP After last year’s tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Carroll Robotics team made a comeback in 2021 when it qualified for the VEX World Championship for the eighth year in a row. Earlier in April, eight Carroll Robotics teams traveled to Redwater High School in Texarkana to compete in the Texas Region 2 VEX Robotics Championship. Three teams ended up qualifying for the World Championship, with one of them becoming a finalist and another one being named the Region 2 tournament champion. For the VEX World Championship, the students had to design, build, repair and program a robot, as well as document their process in an engineering notebook and a live interview. As proud as she is of the team qualifying for VEX Worlds, CISD robotics instructor Leah Schwedler says she’s even more proud of how her kids overcame the challenges of 2020. “They embraced the remote competition format and continued to push themselves in spite of the limitations they faced,” Leah expresses. The VEX World Championship took place May 17-29.

CARROLL ISD HIRES NEW VARSITY BASKETBALL COACH Southlake Carroll has a new varsity basketball coach: David Markley. The longer I spoke to coach Markley, the more certain I became that he was the right person to lead the boy’s basketball program.” While at Chisholm Trail High School, coach Markley led the team to playoff appearances in 2016-2018 and the 5-5A district championship in 2015 and 2016. POKEWORKS COMING TO SOUTHLAKE A new poke restaurant is coming to Southlake this month to deliver fresh and healthy bites to the area. Founded in 2015 by Michael Wu and Peter Yang, Pokeworks is a poke restaurant franchise with more than 60 locations across the United States. The concept lets customers build their own poke entree through six simple steps. First customers choose a base like a bowl, burrito or salad, then they pick a protein such as tuna, salmon, chicken or shrimp. After that, they add mix-ins, toppings and sauces, followed by crisps such as garlic, onions or wontons. “We are thrilled to join their effort of growing this brand, especially in the DFW area,” Southlake owner Jean Xue says. “I am confident that diners in the area will be attracted to this new concept.” The new Pokeworks restaurant is expected to open this month at 2801 E. Southlake Blvd.

ALPACA BREEDER
DJ’S CLASSIC ALPACAS HAS BEEN IN THE BREEDING BUSINESS SINCE 2008
ask An. . debbie conkle
WHAT DREW YOU INTO THE FARMING BUSINESS? My husband and I love animals! We wanted something that would be relatively easy to raise and different, not like the usual animals on farms and ranches. WHY DID YOU WANT TO HERD ALPACAS SPECIFICALLY? We did not want to have to kill the animal for the end product. Alpacas live to be 15-20 years and produce wonderful fleece that can be sold each year, so alpacas were a natural fit. WHAT IS YOUR DAY-TO-DAY ROUTINE ON THE FARM? The female and young alpacas are fed one cup of food in the morning and evening, while the breeding males are only fed three nights a week. They have pastures to graze on all day. It’s important to maintain their current weight. WHAT DO VISITS TO YOUR KELLER FARM ENTAIL? We educate our visitors on the history of alpacas, show the special things about them and allow them to be fed and walked around. Hugs, kisses and special selfies with the alpacas are a big hit. We also have fleece products and items available for purchase. We do private farm tours, birthday parties, weddings and more. HOW MANY ALPACAS DO YOU TAKE CARE OF? We range from having 45-50 alpacas here at any given time, which includes alpacas that are boarding here and those that are staying temporarily while being bred to one of our herd sires. DO YOU ATTEND ANY CONVENTIONS? We go to several alpaca shows each year to compete with other breeders across the United States. It helps us to understand where our breeding program is and where we may need to focus to improve the quality of our breeds. There are also fleece shows where we send in the shorn blanket for judging, and we get a report card on the fleece qualities. We also have retail shows that we attend to sell alpaca products. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE ALPACA BUSINESS? Besides the alpacas, the people! We enjoy learning something new every single day, working with young people and mentoring new owners. We have been in business for 13 years, and our only regret is that we didn’t start sooner.

Leaning Into My Natural Strengths
t’s always hard for me to take credit for things that come easy. I spent more than 20 years in marketing, and some of my best ideas are the ones that didn’t take much time or energy and felt natural. Growing up, life was all about hard work. My parents were hard workers, and so were theirs. I was taught that hard work was good work. You can imagine why it was difficult to accept compliments, pats on the back and thank yous for some of the things that are just, well, easy. Have you ever taken one of those personality tests? My teenage son informed me that one of these tests revealed that he was “left-brained.” It reminded me of a career test I took at his age. The results told me I’d best be suited as a professional truck driver. My son got a kick out of this because not only am I a mediocre driver but also he knows mom as a corporate executive turned business owner who works behind a desk most days. Don’t get me wrong. I view truck drivers as highly skilled essential workers and have nothing but respect for the profession. It just wasn’t the path I chose. In the corporate world, I was fortunate to take a few assessments that helped me identify my true strengths. One in particular stressed that while you might be really good and successful at your particular job, you may not be leaning into your
natural-born strengths and abilities. For instance, I always considered myself creative and thought that’s why I was good at marketing. Although true, the assessment showed I’m also naturally quite social. It made a lot of sense because I loved helping people as much as I loved my work. When I started my executive coaching business, it was after so many people told me I gave the best advice. Humbly, I like to think I’m great at helping others find the answers within themselves. That just comes really easy to me! It got me thinking, could I start a business doing this? That seems too easy! Spoiler alert: The business took off. And it was easy! Not without some challenges, but by leaning into my natural strengths, I feel fulfilled. I help others and feel accomplished at the end of the day. Here are some tips on leaning into your natural strengths. Believe in compliments: Take a minute to reflect on things your friends and family say you’re really good at. People see things about us that we often don’t see in ourselves. Easy is OK: Give yourself credit for all of your wins — big, small and especially the easy ones! What comes easy to you may be hard for others. Be uniquely you: We live in a comparison culture with social media in our face 24/7. It’s easy to think, I should be more like that person. But the world doesn’t need more of them. The world needs more of you!

LED SOUTHLAKE AIMS TO SUPPORT LGBTQ+ STUDENTS BY LIZZY SPANGLER PHOTOS BY BLUDOOR STUDIOS

W
ords have power. Take it from one rising senior who in their first year at CISD heard another student say, “he would never sit next to a gay person because he believed gay people are gross.” “As a member of the LGBT+ community, this made me very uncomfortable,” the student says in an online testimony. “And I begged my parents to let me go to a different school because I thought this was the mindset of most students here.” Those sentiments leave students feeling like they cannot be their true selves. “I was severely bullied and called names for being openly bi — so much so that I went back into the closet,” a Carroll student who graduates in 2024 says in a testimony shared online. “The sad thing is that people were nice to me when I was ‘straight’ but not when I was being myself.” This issue reaches past city lines. More than half of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth have been verbally harassed at school compared to 25% of nonLGBTQ+ students, according to the Human Rights Campaign’s “Growing Up LGBT In America” report. The report, which surveyed more than 10,000 kids ages 13-17 who identify as LGBTQ+, also found only 37% of LGBTQ+ youth say they’re happy. It goes on to list non-accepting families, trouble or bullying at school and fear of being out or open as among their top concerns. Laura Durant strives to help Southlake LGBTQ+ youth feel cared for. The Carroll ISD mom formed Love Every Dragon (LED) to ensure kids know they have a supportive network they can rely on.
FIGHTING BACK WITH LOVE
After reading these and other student testimonies shared online, Laura connected with other Southlake residents through social media and asked about supporting LGBTQ+ Dragons. “I reached out over several Facebook groups to just see, ‘Hey, is there anybody who will publicly stand up for these kids because they need a lot of help,’” Laura says. “So it almost started as just a way to tell these kids, ‘Hey there’s people here who care about you.’” After gauging interest, Laura originally looked into starting a PFLAG chapter in Southlake. PFLAG is the first and largest organization for LGBTQ+ people, their parents and their families, with more than 400 chapters, according to its website. But with a Fort Worth PFLAG chapter already established, she instead created LED to show students they were not alone.

Southlake Police Chief Reflects On His Cancer Journey And Community Service
n the six years he’s led the Southlake Police Department, Chief James Brandon has never had a year quite like 2020. Battling not only COVID-19 public health concerns but also his own health issues as he was diagnosed with cancer, Chief Brandon happily serves the loving and caring community that has supported him through it all. As proud as he is to serve Southlake, there’s another role he sees as even more important — being a father.
MY LAW ENFORCEMENT CAREER… began in 1999 with the Corpus Christi Police Department. In 2013, I was hired as the assistant police chief for Southlake Police then was promoted to chief in 2015. SERVING AS SOUTHLAKE’S POLICE CHIEF… is truly a privilege. I lead a police department in which the citizens, city council and the city’s leadership are all supportive. I come to work every day and am surrounded by people who are prepared to sacrifice their own safety and well-being for others. That provides us with a great sense of purpose and direction. MY WIFE AND I… have two sons, 15 and 18. It’s both a great responsibility and privilege to be their father. Our goal is to raise productive young men who will leave the world a better place than they found it. At the end of my life, my family will matter much more than my career — or anything else. I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH GASTRIC CANCER… in March 2020. It was a lot for my wife and I to wrap our heads around initially. There was a time shortly after the diagnosis when we were told that my prognosis was very poor, so we spent a week updating my will and making sure my wife had all the information she needed on life insurance. That was a hard week. MY WIFE AND I… decided at the beginning to keep our two teenagers fully informed so that our family was all on the same page. We explained that I am not a victim of anything and that we looked at this as just another challenge to get through. I think that having a positive mindset does wonders, and the kids seemed to adopt our attitude. NOTHING PUTS THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE… like being told you probably will not survive. The course of treatment was four rounds of chemo, two abdominal surgeries then four more rounds of chemo. All of that was the hardest thing we have ever faced.
62 • JUN 21
IT WAS CERTAINLY GREAT NEWS… when I was told I was cancer-free, but the practical side of me is very aware that I have dealt with inaccurate scans before, so I took the news in stride. I have periodic scans to ensure the cancer does not come back, but if it does, we’ll deal with that like we did the first time. I have a positive attitude about it, but I also understand that this may not be the end of the fight. I THINK THAT… the journey has certainly made us stronger as a family. There have been times where I reminded our sons that whatever they are going through pales in comparison to how they dealt with cancer. THE COMMUNITY AND THE CITY… have been extremely supportive. I think at some level, everyone understands that cancer could happen to any of us. Many people have told me about either experiencing cancer themselves or that they have a close relative that has gone through it. I think that causes a level of understanding, support and sympathy that feels good to share with others. IN THE WORLD OF POLICE DEPARTMENTS AND CHIEFS… the challenges never seem to stop. The men and women of our department have faced many challenges in the last 18 months, and they have done so with courage, grace and dignity. I am lucky enough to work with great officers, civilians and an awesome assistant chief who led the department during the summer in my absence. AS THE DEPARTMENT’S LEADER… I always feel it is incumbent upon me to set a positive tone and find a path that leads to the safety and success of our citizens and officers. I have returned to doing what I feel I was called to do, but it’s also the last step in life returning to normal. It feels great to be back. I am very thankful that Southlake Police continues to step up, no matter the challenge.

Dahlia Bar & Bistro Blooms In East Dallas

old and beautiful vibes set the stage for East Dallas’ Dahlia Bar & Bistro. The chic eatery, which opened late last year, delights guests with notes of whimsy thanks to its poppy interior, lavish garden space and delicious flavors. Owned and operated by twin brothers Mark and Chris Beardon, Dahlia stands out thanks to its feminine finesse. “The concept was created to fill a gap in the Dallas market,” says Chris. “We wanted to fulfill a casual neighborhood restaurant/bar that could fit in East Dallas and also a concept that would attract Dallas socialites wanting quality
food and beverage in a casual but upscale atmosphere.” Mark says the approachable yet vibrant vibe is reflected in its name, which honors the flower. “The dahlia symbolizes elegance, inner strength, change, creativity and dignity,” says Mark. “We strive to ensure every guest that walks through that door feels like Dahlia could be their new regular destination for delicious food and drinks.” Floral fun doesn’t stop with the name on the door. After guests walk in and see the stunning, artful installations of florals, plants and greenery, they will feel lifted up by the space.

LOCALFLAVOR review
“The foundation of the concept itself was the focus of the floral courtyard patio area to act as a plush botanical cocktail garden,” says Chris. “We focused our attention on the floral elements and decided that an Italian and Southern European-style cuisine fit our model that people would recognize and enjoy.” Dahlia’s variety of classic cocktails served up with a twist ensures its bar program delivers, and its 16 house syrups allow signature offerings to shine. You don’t have to be blonde to enjoy the Bend and Snap, a Ford’s Gin-based drink finished with lemon, lemongrass reduction, herbal honey bitters and julienned sugar snap peas. Bubble enthusiasts will get a kick out of the Brazillian 75, Leblon Cachaca (the key ingredient in caipirinha) mixed with butterfly pea reduction, lemon, grapefruit bitters, sparkling wine and edible flowers. The fun continues into the food menu, which combines traditional and contemporary takes on Italian, Spanish and Mediterranean flavors. Start out with a few shareables, like the wagyu meatballs that come out smothered in rich vodka sauce and topped with melted mozzarella and fresh basil. See all those influences come together with its charcuterie board, a spread of Spanish manchego, havarti dill, fig jam, seasonal berries and two rotating charcuterie cuts. Robust flavors can be found in its short rib sliders — tender brisket served with caramelized onions and horseradish aioli on a brioche bun. But for lighter fare that will leave you satisfied, order the steamed mussels, available two ways: either French or Italian style. And you won’t be able to stop eating the whipped feta dip, accented with local honey, rosemary and chopped walnuts and served with crostini, until it’s gone. After munching on a few appetizers, enjoy the best from the land and sea by splitting a few entrees amongst the table. The lamb kabobs, served with bell peppers, onion, zucchini, jalapeno mint jelly and couscous, provide heft, while the seared bass, topped with a beurre blanc sauce, proves subtle flavors are delicious. Its pastas also provide both familiar and unexpected recipes. You can’t go wrong with a classic, like the cacio e pepe or seafood pasta. But to enjoy a fun twist of two favorites, try the chicken marsala, sauteed chicken scallopini with angel hair pasta and marsala mushroom sauce. Its balance of flavors will hook you after the first bite. Dahlia’s attention to detail and elegant plating can also be found on its desserts list. Whether you enjoy one of its rotating house-made desserts or its beloved espresso creme brulee, finished with a touch of espresso and berries, there’s a sweet just waiting to round out your night.

Whistle Britches Brings Southern Comfort Food Favorites To Southlake Since opening its first location in North Dallas in 2016, Whistle Britches has built a following thanks to the concept’s indulgent offerings. Now, locals can enjoy its Southern foodie delights in Southlake. Whistle Britches opened in Southlake Town Square, bringing its signature pickle-brined chicken, fresh buttermilk biscuits and more to Tarrant County for the first time. Led by James Beard semifinalist chef Omar Flores, the scratch kitchen offers brunch, lunch and dinner, ensuring guests can stop in and enjoy big flavors for every meal. Start out with a shareable appetizer, like the creamed corn jalapeno skillet cornbread topped with honey butter and cowboy candy, or the deviled farm eggs, which are complete with dill relish, city ham and smoked paprika. For a signature favorite, order one of its fried chicken sandwiches, like the O.G. — crispy chicken served with Duke’s mayo and dill pickles on a brioche bun. Bolder flavors can be found in the Hot Dang, a Nashville hot crispy chicken sandwich served with dilly ranch on toasted white bread, and the Don Chingon, crispy chicken served with poblano chile queso blanco, smoked bacon, caramelized onion and loaded guacamole on a brioche bun. Protein-packed plates — like the Thighs ’n’ Fries (two crispy thighs, one wing and a buttermilk biscuit with shoestring French fries) and the Sir Mix A Lot (one-piece white, one-piece dark, one wing, one biscuit and potato salad or coleslaw) — let diners take in the quality of the bird. Meanwhile, the Chicken N’ Waffles, a Belgium waffle, three crispy chicken tenders, jalapeno cane syrup and honey butter, ensures guests’ sweet tooths are properly fed. Those who are poultry adverse may first think to sleep on Whistle Britches, but there are other Southern dishes just waiting to be enjoyed. Ma’s Meatloaf comes out rich and juicy while the salmon and grits features creamy and spicy flavors to provide a balanced bite. And its salads — like the Southern Charmer made with baby arugula, goat cheese, bosc pears, white grapes, candied walnuts, red onions, fig and balsamic vinaigrette — prove everyone can find something fresh on the menu.

Whether you fall in love with a bright rosé or an old world cabernet franc, there’s plenty to get excited about after stopping in. Plus, it’s a great gift stop for those looking to pick up a bottle for a friend (or for yourself later). WacoWineShoppe.com

Less than a mile away on Franklin Avenue lies Milo All Day, a bright bistro that serves everything from elote corn ribs and warm biscuits to 44 Farms ribeye and pan-seared salmon. With sophisticated plating and fresh ingredients, Milo meets diners where they are, whether they are passing through or college town natives. Start out with the crispy Brussels sprouts, finished with sorghum chile, sesame and charred green onions, to set your expectations of the flavors that await. Hungry diners will love the mad burger — a double patty served with cheddar, chimichurri aioli, greens and house pickles on a challah bun. The chile-rubbed chicken, which is brined, roasted and seared to keep it juicy, provides a new take on an original recipe, while the grilled pork chop plays with both new and traditional flavors thanks to its accompanying hoppin’ john, peaches and mustard sauce. After a refreshing cocktail and a few bites of these plates, you'll already start planning your next trip down. MiloWaco.com

home STYLE The Growth Of Cottagecore
R
omantic and cozy, cottagecore interiors took over the design world last year. Acting as a throwback to the ideal rural life spent in the English countryside, this rising trend may feel like a flash in the pan, but its use of vintage decor and airy accents is sure to stick around for years to come. Freshen up your space with these nostalgic home touches.
START OUTSIDE Picture quaint cottages often featured in period pieces — or more recently in “The Holiday.” These humble abodes often feature lush gardens filled with a bounty of florals and greenery. Elevate your exterior by investing in cottagecore-inspired plants. Whether you start small by lining the pathway to your home with a few rose bushes or build an ivy-covered picket fence garden in your backyard, these lively additions will bring a new energy to your space. Plus, if you tend to your garden well, your interior is sure to benefit from its bounty of fresh flowers, perfect for adding color to any decorative space. CURATED KITCHENS Cottagecore pieces blossom when they play off each other, but that doesn’t mean they need to match. The design trend at its best resembles a carefully curated space, showcasing items passed down from generation to generation. Take a small step toward this aesthetic with your dishes. Open shelves and hooks of antique coffee mugs and tea cups enhance the room’s visual interest while also adding to its functionality. Instead of showcasing one set of sleek dishes in your glass-front cabinets, mix and match various thrifted designs with different colors and textures. To go all in on the trend, replace your matching dining set with six unique wooden chairs to sit around your kitchen table, each bringing their own personality to the party. Complete the vibe by installing a hanging pan rack over your kitchen island. VINTAGE FINDS Add cottagecore elements throughout your home with various fabrics and furniture purchases. Big-ticket items, like a velvet dusty green couch or floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, create new focal points for your living room, while smaller accent pieces, like transparent floral curtains and gilded vintage mirrors, provide subtle nods to the trend. But you don’t need to spend a lot to accomplish the look. Repurpose things around your home, like turning glass milk bottles into vases or creating a gallery wall out of old frames, to show cottagecore mastery. This trend loves a maximalist moment, so don’t be afraid to go bold.

ith more than 6 million properties available in 100,000 cities, Airbnb ensures travelers can find the ideal home base for their next vacation. With more than 300 reservations available in Texas, now’s a good time to explore and experience what Airbnb has to offer in the Lone Star State.
Adobe Dome | Terlingua

Vintage Airstream | Austin
You may have never stayed in an RV camper, but this Vintage Airstream in East Austin is a cozy little mobile home away from home. Set on a beautiful halfacre lot three and a half miles away from downtown, the Vintage Airstream is located in a backyard garden filled with lush vegetation, chickens, pigs, a cat, swingset, pingpong table, trampoline, fire and barbecue pit, picnic area and fluorescent lights that illuminate the night sky. The interior is a tribute to traveling itself with wallpaper made from maps and souvenir knickknacks sprawled throughout the space. But this isn’t your typical camper — the whole RV feels like a cabin from the full-size bed, the hardwood floors and cabinets to the clawfoot bathtub and the free Wi-Fi. While the Vintage Airstream doesn’t have a TV, it’s sometimes a good thing to disconnect from the world and plug into nature.
Silo House | Troy
It isn’t often that an Airbnb is located inside of a silo, but that’s just the case at the Silo House at Laughing Llama Farm in Troy. While the outside doesn’t look much out of the ordinary, the inside has eclectic charm filling all 672 feet of the residence. The first floor is equipped with a full-size kitchen, sink, TV, fireplace and queen-sized sofa sleeper, while the upstairs has a queen-size loft perfect for couples. And everything indoors is designed with a modern artistic flair that makes the colors and architecture pop, as well as all of its llama paraphernalia that reminds you of the farm’s namesake. You can interact with real llamas out on the farm, as well as sheep, dogs, chickens and cats. The outdoor shower is perfect for private use whether it’s day or night, and if you’re in a fishing mood, you can take your rod and lures to the on-site pond.
Container Tiny House | Waco
There may not be much room inside the Container Tiny House in Waco, but the space that is there is utilized to its fullest capability. This small structure fits everything that it can into 20 feet, including a kitchen and dining area, compact workspace, personalized restroom, custom-tiled shower, TV, living room and Tuft & Needle couch that folds out into a spacious queen-size bed. The container doors open up into a beautiful green pasture, where you can soak in the view from the patio or fire up some barbecue on the grill. And the outside staircase takes guests up to the rooftop deck, where they can sit back in its comfy lawn chairs and socialize while they sky gaze. It may not be larger than life, but this minimalist masterpiece has everything you need.
