Shopping, dining, entertainment and parks — you name it — a new one is coming. Whether you’ve moved here in the past one, two or, in my case 15 years, we can all agree development has come with plenty of perks. The more nostalgic amongst us may also agree the excitement of what’s to come is obscured by the memories of what once was. For every Duff’s Wings (love ’em) and Dragon House (getting great reviews; see our take on page 72), there’s a lengthy list of Southlake ghosts whose time has passed (Cafe Express) or dare I say, were hardly here at all (SaladWorks). The saying is true, “The more things change, the more they stay the same,” and through all the comings and goings, I’ve discovered what I still love about Southlake. The excitement of modern amenities coupled with a nostalgic, small town feel. It’s part of what drew us here and what keeps our suburban lives a little more engaging. People and places we know and love alongside those we need to know and will come to love. Pockets of charm amidst pockets of development. In Maleesa Smith’s “Burros of the Boulevard,” we explore the charm of Southlake’s beloved donkeys. New office developments are going to happen in any desirable city, but how many communities will not only recognize but also pay for the installment of a bronze statue in remembrance of livestock who roamed the fields just months ago? Based on the many crowdsourced photos that poured into our office, these donkeys were beloved residents indeed. I love the fact that Southlake continues to embrace its heritage even as it continues to develop. One eye on the past and one on the future. It’s a great way to look at life.

Somebody’s in the doghouse — and it’s bigger and nicer! There we were, perfectly happy in the old house when — wham — somebody shot up like a weed. I grew two inches overnight. We needed more room. My humans fetched a phone and called Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty — and the hunt was on. But not for long! The new house was found fast. Oh, boy! Bigger rooms. Bigger yard. Bigger everything. The new den is my favorite spot: It flows right into the kitchen, so I can hear a crumb drop and be there in a split second. And, I get to go on more walks in the beautiful new neighborhood. I’ve made lots of new friends and so have my people. I’m telling you: If you don’t go with Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty, you are barking up the wrong tree.
Squeak, squeak.

To Do With Dad for Father’s Day
Enjoy a local wonder like Lake Grapevine or Bob Jones Nature Center. Snag tickets to a concert happening over the weekend. Names like Paul McCartney, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Trace Adkins and Hootie and the Blowfish will all be playing in the Metroplex. Get the nostalgia flowing by hitting up a nearby arcade like Bishop Cidercade or Free Play. Celebrate the week after by grabbing Texas Rangers tickets. They take on the Cleveland Indians at home from June 17 to 20. Treat all the dads in your life to a nice steak dinner at a nearby fine dining establishment. Red meat can be a love language.
Plan for a family movie day. Whether your kids are counting down the days until “The Secret Life of Pets 2” or the dad of the bunch would rather see “Men in Black: International,” there are plenty of great options playing at Harkins.
WORLD OF ART: A FESTIVAL OF CULTURES JUNE 29 It’s not every day you see an aerial silk artist soar through the air, but it will be a part of the World of Art: A Festival of Cultures on June 29. Try dishes from other countries while also learning about various cultures at this fun Arlington event. Learn more about it in Arts & Culture.

WHY MY CAT IS MORE IMPRESSIVE THAN YOUR BABY MATTHEW INMAN JUNE 4 Get Ready to Laugh They say don’t judge a book by its cover, but in this case, you pretty much get all you need to know from the title alone. Written by “New York Times” bestselling author, Matthew Inman, “Why My Cat is More Impressive than Your Baby” is sure to make any day brighter. Inman is the creator of the hilarious, comic-filled website, The Oatmeal. He brings some of his online sensations as well as never-seen-before content together in his latest book. Complete with guides such as, “How to hold a baby when you are not used to holding babies” and “A dog’s guide to walking a human being,” the book features mostly wholesome hilarity that is shockingly relatable.

If you have somehow gone through every crime drama that television has to offer, you’re in luck: “City on a Hill” premieres this month. Set in early ’90s Boston, “City on a Hill” is a fictional retelling of a tumultuous time in city’s criminal justice system. At the time, Boston was riddled with violent crime and corruption. In the midst of it all, assistant district attorney Decourcu Ward (Aldis Hodge) forms an unlikely alliance. Partnering with corrupt FBI veteran Jackie Rhodes (Kevin Bacon), they take on criminals in a case that grows to involve and ultimately subvert the city’s entire criminal justice system. Be prepared for some fast action, Kevin Bacon sporting a ’90s mustache and plenty of Boston accents.

ask A . . GOLF INSTRUCTOR: TIMARRON’S DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTION DAVE BARRON HAS OVER THREE DECADES OF TEACHING EXPERIENCE
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A GOLF INSTRUCTOR? I started teaching golf in 1985 – 33 years ago.
WHAT DREW YOU TO GOLF? My dad drew me to golf when I was eight years old.
WHAT IS YOUR MAIN ADVICE FOR BEGINNERS? I tell them to answer these three questions. ‘Why do you want to play golf?’ ‘What do you want to achieve by playing golf?’‘ When do you want to achieve these goals?’
WHAT'S THE MOST COMMON MISTAKE GOLFERS MAKE? The most common mistake is not getting a free assessment by a PGA Professional and failing to set goals.
20 • JUN 19
Dave Barron
WHAT'S THE EASIEST WAY TO IMPROVE YOUR SWING? Learn that the swing is the effect of the causes: grip, aim, posture and the mind. Every single golfer I have worked with for 33 years has wanted to be more consistent. Go see a PGA Pro and learn how to hold the club so that the club face is straight (square) every time. Shots will start at the target when the face is square. Then, learn how to aim the body where the arms swing fairly straight through the ball. Thirdly, get into athletic posture so you can swing with power and not injure yourself.
WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE PROFESSIONAL GOLFER? The King – Arnold Palmer. Arnie did more for the game than anyone.
WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE GOLF COURSE YOU HAVE PLAYED? My favorite course that I've played is Pebble Beach.

Southlake Donkeys Made A Lasting Impact On The Community
BURROS OF THE BOULEVARD

s Sara Gardner heads down the steps in her Arkansas backyard, she calls out three names, “Tex! Bob! Blaze, I’m coming down!” In response, a trio of donkeys slowly lumbers toward her. These three have had many names over the years. Formerly living in a field off of Southlake Boulevard near White Chapel, the burros were well-loved by their community. “I live in the neighborhood adjacent to their field,” Southlake resident Emily Roberts says. “I loved walking over with the kids and petting them...they were so loving and sweet. When they saw someone standing at the fence, the lighter one would always wander over to greet you! I think everyone in our neighborhood had names for them. We called them Ethel and Gene.” JUN 19 • 25

NEW HOME
SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE
One year ago, the field the donkeys lived on was sold. Thankfully, one month later, in July of 2018, their future new owner arrived on the scene. Sara was in Southlake visiting her life-long best friend, Kathryn Johnson. The Johnson family has lived in the area around eight years, and Sara estimates that she has visited them about twice per year. It wasn’t until her visit last July that she met the local celebrity donkeys, but she quickly picked up on how much they meant to the community. “They're so sweet,” she says. “I can see why they were such an institution in the city. Their former owner sent me an email when everything came together and he told me, 'I'm not sure you realize how important these donkeys are.' But I fell in love with them when I met them before I even knew they were available. I very much understand that they are precious.”

MEANT TO BRAY As fate would have it, Sara was actually planning on getting donkeys before she met the local livestock. She and her husband live on 18 acres outside of Little Rock, Arkansas and recently cleared and fenced in about five of those acres. While she was visiting Southlake, Kathryn’s husband, Bob, asked what she was going to do with the fenced-in land. "I said, 'Well, I'd love to get donkeys,’” Sara recalls. Upon hearing that, Bob's daughter, Emily, burst out, saying “We have donkeys!” Sara laughed initially, noting the Johnson’s backyard was devoid of donkeys. The family soon filled her in on the furry celebrities that had happily been grazing for as long as many residents can remember. After dinner, upon her insistence, the Johnsons took her to meet the donkeys. “When we drove up, I almost burst into tears,” Sara says. “I was just like, 'Oh my gosh, they're perfect! They're so sweet!'” Sara visited them every day after that during her visit to Southlake. She noticed for sale signs along the property and wondered about her new friends’ fate. And she wasn’t alone. While Sara was visiting the donkeys one evening, she met another one of their fans who said she fed them every week after church. Sara has a residential real estate license, so she immediately put her background knowledge to use, looking up the commercial real estate agents and trying to find the owner of that specific parcel of land. Kathryn also got to work, reaching out to Mayor Laura Hill in an attempt to see if the donkeys were for sale. Mayor Hill got back to the two ladies before any real estate agents did and gave them the number of the donkeys’ owner. Sara was able to get in touch with him and work out a deal in which she would get the donkeys after the property closed. From there, she worked with The Pegasus Project, a local horse rescue, to transport the donkeys to their new Arkansas home. JUN 19 • 27

IN THEIR ‘HAYDAY’ While the donkeys were clearly loved and pampered in Southlake, it’s safe to say that their new home is a bit of an upgrade. With several acres of lush land to roam and graze, Bob, Blaze and Tex have happily adjusted to their new home. The Gardners even built a barn, though Sara says the trio wouldn’t go near it at first. It took them about two months to warm up to it. She also keeps them supplied with plenty of equine toys and quality feed. And while Sara would gladly heap treats upon them, she knows she has to hold back. “I feed them mostly celery as a treat because donkeys tend to have weight issues,” she says. Of course, that doesn’t mean she doesn’t sneak them the occasional carrot or apple. Aside from treats, the donkeys have a lifted feeder to keep their hay dry. Sara refers to herself as “the lady with the food,” because when she shakes their food bucket, the three donkeys come running. She visits them every evening and is working to get them halter trained. She also plans to attend the Donkey Welfare Symposium at the University of California, Davis this fall. In short, she is all in. “I can't wait for the donkey symposium,” Sara says. “That will be really enlightening, especially if I get more...which I want to.” SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE
LEGACY LIVES ON While the three donkeys are clearly in capable, loving hands, they are still sorely missed by the community of Southlake. “I actually really cried when I found out they had been relocated,” Southlake resident Jo Hyman says. “I know it was for the best, and I am so happy they are living a good life. However, starting my day and ending my day with these creatures was a blessing.” Other residents, like Frances Scharli and Jennifer O'Brien Thrailkill simply miss hearing them. “I loved to hear them bray when I took early morning tennis lessons at Southlake Tennis Center,” Frances says. For many others, the donkeys were a fun way to introduce their children to the old farm feel of Southlake. Families would routinely visit, bestowing the donkeys with affection and treats. “We would cut up apples and walk over once a week and feed them,” Michelle Woolf says. “It was something we looked forward to. They lived right behind us. We miss them dearly!” Stephanie Mehan, who has lived in Southlake for a little over two years, got here just in time to enjoy the donkeys. Her kids, Tommy (4) and Evelyn (3), joined her on weekly visits. “Having donkeys behind a bank in town is just something you don't see every day,” she says. “We loved spending Sunday mornings there when everything was quiet and just waking up. It was a peaceful few moments in the midst of busy days.” While they are gone, the donkeys are certainly not forgotten. Southlake Commons, the development that will be housed on the land where the donkeys once lived, will feature a bronze statue near its Southlake Boulevard entrance. SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM
When plans for Southlake Commons were brought forward, the developer, Sage Group, Inc., and the City Council agreed to place a bronze donkey sculpture near the Southlake Boulevard entrance to commemorate the property’s history. Already in the works by sculptor Jane DeDecker, the statue will feature three donkeys in honor of the property’s history. In the meantime, the actual three donkeys are contentedly living together as a family in Arkansas.

“
The decision to sell our Southlake dream home of 13 years did not come easy. We also knew that finding a smaller home that would please everyone would be a daunting challenge, given our timeframe, budget, and criteria. But Lisa not only met the challenge, she far exceeded our expectations! She found a beautiful new home in a wonderful neighborhood at a great price and helped us get top dollar for our old home within two weeks of it being listed. Lisa’s calm, reassuring demeanor and her knowledge of the local real estate market put us at ease throughout the entire process. We don’t plan on moving anytime soon, but when the time comes, we know the first person we will call!

LORI CERAMI TRAVELS TO AUSTIN TO SUPPORT HOUSE BILL 638 Founder of Swim4Elise and 2019 Tastemaker Lori Cerami traveled to Austin last month to stand up for a cause she cares about deeply. On May 7, she spoke in front of the Texas Senate Education Committee on House Bill 638, which concerns posthumous diplomas for grieving families. Lori became aware of this cause in the fall of 2017 when she found out about House Bill 1563, which states the protocol of posthumous diplomas in the current education code. Because of its standing verbiage, grieving families would receive a posthumous diploma for their child if he or she was in grade 12. She met with Texas State Representative Giovanni Capriglione in December 2017 to learn more about the process of changing the current law. The edits they made later became House Bill 638. Lori hopes that these measures will pass in time for Elise’s class graduation in May 2020, but she also hopes to positively impact families across the state. DRAGON FOOTBALL HOSTS ANNUAL SPRING GAME Football fans ventured over to Dragon Stadium on May 15 to show off their Dragon Pride during the annual spring game. The night was full of action and energy and got everyone excited for the fall season. This event experienced a date change from May 16 to May 15 so Dragon athletes and fans would have the opportunity to cheer on the baseball team who advanced to the regional quarterfinals. Both events were originally scheduled for the same night.

After the war, he resumed his position as a pilot for American Airlines and was the editor of Grapevine Area History in the ’70s. In 1995, he published a book called “Into the Valley: The Untold Story of USAAF Troop Carrier in World War II, From North Africa Through Europe.” This exhibit will include authentic WWII helmets, medals and various other items owned by UNT student, history enthusiast and Southlake resident Paul Porter. Happy Father’s Day! GRAPEVINE LEXUS DEALERSHIP WELCOMES HOME LOCAL SERVICEMAN AFTER DEPLOYMENT In April 2018, U.S. Army Reserve Sergeant Joseph Rasey left for a deployment in Kuwait. He returned a year later, and his job at Park Place Lexus Grapevine was waiting for him. But Park Place did much more than keep his place; they treated Sgt. Rasey’s family like their own. Before leaving, Park Place threw Sgt. Rasey a going away party at the Grapevine dealership. While deployed, Sgt. Rasey’s wife Megan gave birth to their third child, Hannah, so Park Place hosted a birthday party for the Rasey children. The girls received toys and books featuring their dad’s voice, so they could have a reminder of him while he was overseas. “Park Place has proven they’re family,” Joseph Rasey explains in a press release. “They took such loving care of my family while I was gone. There was never a question where I would work when I got back. Without doubt, Park Place is MY place.” LOCAL BRAND DESIGN FIRM RECEIVES TWO GOLD HERMES CREATIVE AWARDS Robinson Creative Inc., a local brand design firm, was honored during the Hermes Creative Awards, an international competition judged by the Association of Marketing and Communicational Professionals for creatives in concept, writing and design fields, this spring. f you hear a buzz around town that there’s a new queen bee on the rise, your mind might first jump to gossip. But for the Kellers, it’s just another Monday on the farm. “We had a new queen bee arise this week,” Paula Keller says while describing her day. “They decided to swarm, so we have a lady who is a beekeeper. She had to come in and add in another home for them. It was just crazy.”

SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE
Paula and her husband Frank own a threeacre lot off Southlake Boulevard – alongside Watermere, for reference – that they share with the property’s chickens, horses, dogs, a donkey and now honeybees. It might not be the most common conversation happening in the area, but the Kellers are not alone. While their business, Alpha & Omega Mounted Patrol, makes them distinct, there are an array of farm owners in Southlake who get to take advantage of all the area has to offer. Southlake presents locals with a different take on suburban living. Locals interested in building their own rural spaces can do it in the confines of a city environment. SOUTHLAKE FARM LIVING According to the City of Southlake Tourism Master Plan, this city has four times the U.S. average of organized retail per capita on a square foot basis. So it’s no question that Southlake boasts metropolitan amenities. But less than five miles down the road from Southlake Town Square sits the Kellers’ farm. Sure, other cities in the Metroplex have multi-acre lots full of vegetable gardens and chicken coops, but there are not many places in the area that can claim to provide the finest qualities of urban and rural spaces. Frank and Paula are just one of the many farm owners in Southlake, and while they permanently dwell in Keller, they are grateful they have been able to see Southlake rise up and offer more to its residents. Frank’s father purchased the farm back in the ’80s before Southlake’s current shape started to take form. “This property was sort of one of the first ranches in this whole area,” Frank says. “When my father bought it, there was very little. There was nothing on 1709 – even that was just a two-lane road. Southlake Town Square was a farm where I bought hay.” But both Frank and Paula grew up with a love for agriculture. Paula grew up watching her grandfather care for bees on his farm while Frank spent his formative years out with equine. “I was raised in agriculture even though I was raised in an urban environment,” Frank explains. “My first job when I was 12 was working in a public riding stable. I fell in love with horses then.” Frank then went on to study wildlife science and agriculture economics in school, but he knew he always wanted to venture out and create his own business. “I had an entrepreneurial spirit, and I knew I wanted to build something,” Frank says. “And I did it with horses: my hobby and my love.” SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

PROFESSIONAL PONIES A few years after they moved to Texas, Frank started Alpha & Omega, an entertainment venture using their horses. Their humble steeds would do everything from lead horse-drawn hayrides to give Santa a lift to his appearances at nearby malls. After building up an inventory of stunning Clydesdales, he wanted to expand. Drawing from his late father’s experience in law enforcement, Alpha & Omega set out to become the first privately owned mounted patrol company for shopping malls. Dallas’ Valley View Mall became Alpha & Omega’s first client in 1990. Shortly after, Frank met with a large mall development company who wanted to expand his business on a national scale. That experience led him to need horses everywhere from Houston to California. “All I could think was, ‘How are we going to do this?’” Frank says. But he expanded to another location in The Woodlands and got to work to bring his highly trained horses across the country. After championing that industry, Frank wanted to do more. As shopping centers started to fizzle in the mid ’90s, he and his horses needed to think bigger. At the time, Frank had up to 50 horses on the property in Southlake. They would spend their days roaming and grazing before being packed up and transported to work. So Frank wanted to join another passion with a new revenue stream for Alpha & Omega Mounted Patrol: music. “I have always been a music lover,” Frank says. “And we were given the opportunity to take our business into that space with Woodstock ’94.” Alpha & Omega provided horses for the 25th anniversary of the original Woodstock festival and soon saw how indispensable their patrol was for these events. They quickly started booking troopers out for concerts, amphitheater events and music festivals. “From there, it just spanned out.” If you’ve ventured out to any of the big festivals of late, or seen the thousands of pictures that flood social media afterward, you’ve probably seen a few of the Alpha & Omega horses. They have a presence at everything from Bonnaroo to Coachella to Stagecoach. Because these events were spread throughout the country, it quickly became evident that Frank couldn’t transport all of these horses every time there was an event. He needed to build his patrol force up and out.

“We just determined there’s no way we can provide horses to do this type of work,” Frank explains. He decided that instead of bringing his horses to events, he would find horses in the areas he wanted to serve. With the help of his extensive training program, riders and their animals could apply to become mounted patrol troopers and gain the skills to go out and protect people in their own communities. Plus, the patrol pair would already have a close bond. “A rider has a bond with a horse more so than you just jumping on a horse and doing security,” Frank explains. “At the end of the day, it’s kind of like having a dog. You and your dog have a bond; it’s the same with the horse.” Not only is Frank living out his dream but also he is creating jobs for horse owners throughout the country – all from his quaint farm deep in the heart of Southlake. BACK ON THE FARM While Alpha & Omega keeps Frank busy, he’s still looking for new opportunities. He started a festival security consulting company, Kel Executive Services, out of a fascination with the effort it takes to build up a music festival. “You are literally building a city with a lot of these music festivals,” Frank says. “Whether it is providing law enforcement or private security, there are logistics that are mind-boggling. These ‘cities’ are produced by these phenomenal people, and we just come in and provide a safe environment for them.” He’s also interested in seeing how else his farm can impact the local community. Frank says he is looking to sell his chicken’s eggs to nearby restaurants interested in providing locally sourced, fresh ingredients to their customers. And, with the bees producing honey, there’s an opportunity to batch that as well. When they aren’t working away, Frank and Paula see their horse farm as a haven – a place to get away from it all. Their days can be spent getting back to their roots and spending quality time with one another. “We say it’s our little bit of country,” Paula says. “It’s our retreat.” That’s the beauty of Southlake. Whether you want to take advantage of the town’s amenities or enjoy the area’s rolling pastures (or both), it’s all available within city limits.

o be the best, you have to play with the best. So if you are carting old clubs around the golf course, now is the time to upgrade. And while it may seem unreasonable to restock your entire golf bag, Titleist’s latest design makes your first step toward upgrading a no brainer. The TS4 Driver first debuted during this year’s PGA tournament, and starting this month, it will roll out to golf shops across the country. The TS4 Driver improves on its previous models’ technologies to create an even more aerodynamic club. Thanks to its sleek shape, the driver reduces spin while also enhancing the speed of the ball. With a thinner, faster face, the club grants golfers a little more forgiveness with each swing while also helping them rack up consistent results. Just picture your buddies’ reactions
after your golf ball makes a straight line toward the hole. Plus, the ultra-thin titanium crown allows weight to be distributed low and forward, which means you can swing faster while also enhancing your precision. After picking your head, golfers will have a choice between the four shafts built for the TS2 and TS3 designs, or they can choose between Titleist’s arrays of custom options. Have pride in your clubs and improve your game by investing in your favorite pastime. The TS4 Driver will be rolled out in late June, and you can give it a try during a Titleist Trial Day at a participating DFW golf club, like The Golf Club at Fossil Creek in Fort Worth, Indian Creek Golf Club in Carrollton or Luna Vista Golf Course in Dallas. You deserve to enjoy the products you lug around for 18 holes. And you’ll thank us the next time you tee off.

amilies and comfort food have a tight connection. When kids grow up learning how to cook alongside loved ones, they start to see the warmth that food can ignite. So when Heim BBQ’s owners Travis and Emma Heim decided to open a barbecue joint in Fort Worth after growing up with a love of comfort food, it was set to be a success. Travis stood alongside his family members in the kitchen as a boy and watched them spend hours to build up flavors in their dishes. Under their guidance, he was able to build up his own skills and develop his own love for cooking.
“That first 14-hour cook started a passion for barbecue that I never could shake,” Travis says on Heim BBQ’s website. The Heims got their start in the industry with a food truck in 2015, and after finding their groove and building up a following, they opened a storefront on Magnolia Avenue in Fort Worth. Now, they are hoping to feed the masses with their biggest location yet in the River District. While they may be feeding more people than ever, he says they have the same goal: “To offer their guests the best possible experience at Heim — from providing a warm, welcoming environment

to sourcing humanely raised and processed meats and the freshest ingredients.” Heim BBQ’s second location, nicknamed Heim on the River, gives fans what they crave: more. The larger space, which opened in April, is outfitted with additional smokers churning out vast quantities of Texas-style barbecue. But they have never forgotten the importance of quality. With the motto “farm to smoker,” the Heim family takes the time to ensure they are serving meat that does not negatively affect the environment or food landscape. Their menu boasts high-quality, locally sourced meats like Niman Ranch Pulled Pork and C.A.B. Brisket, available by the pound or as part of their combo plates. Their signature items, like Bacon Burnt Ends, put them on the barbecue map. The Kansas City-style burnt ends, made out of smoked pork belly, give guests a new take on a barbecue classic. Those familiar with Heim BBQ may notice the River District location has new offerings available, like an array of burgers. Guests can sink their teeth into the Heimburger, a messy brisket burger topped with American cheese and bacon-burnt-end jelly, or try something fresh like the Funky Burger with Heim’s Bacon Burnt Ends and blue cheese. Paired with a side of Twice Baked Potato Salad or Green Chile Mac & Cheese, this is a meal that is set to satisfy. Heim on the River also features a fullservice bar, covered patio and outdoor beer garden, which makes it the perfect place to order up a cold drink and take in the views. With a brew in one hand and a forkful of barbecue in the other, guests will be able to melt into the experience with each bite. To end things on a sweet note, you won’t want to pass on Emma’s Banana Pudding — available by the single serving, pint or quart. (There’s no shame in taking some home to enjoy later.) Its light and refreshing flavors offer a creamy brightness that won’t leave you feeling heavy. The new location also offers seasonal cobbler and hand pies for those looking for a southern favorite. So round up your herd, and head over to Heim. Their dishes not only bring the smoke and heat you would expect in good Texas cooking but also provide that warmth that only comes out of a family’s kitchen. We can’t promise you won’t stand in line to enjoy their low and slow creations. But we can say that after your first bite, you’ll see why Heim has such a following.

Bring On The Dragons Dragon House Offers Hand-pulled Noodles And Dim Sum In Southlake Dragon House opened on Southlake Boulevard in the spring and captivated its diners with their beautiful plates and rich flavors. Located in the old Steak 'n Shake location, Dragon House came onto the food scene with hopes of acting as a true representation of what Shanghai cuisine has to offer. “We offer the most authentic Chinese food in the area,” owner William Lin says. Because of their exclusive offerings – like handmade dim sum and hand-pulled noodles, Dragon House quickly became a foodie must-try. And its dishes don’t disappoint. “We weren’t expecting all these customers all at once,” William says. “All of a sudden, we were packed.” Their offerings include traditional favorites as well as chef specialties, but the star of the show has to be their dumplings. These delicate, flavorsome starters are created in their open kitchen, so guests can see their food formed before their very eyes. The noodles are also pulled in front of diners, a unique experience only available at a few restaurants in the Metroplex. “We want people to enjoy seeing how the food is made,” William says. “Kids like it because they have never seen it before. It’s a fun experience for them.” Each dumpling is filled with a hot broth that fills your mouth with flavor on the first bite. After you get a taste of the meat and the subtle seasonings, your table will be fighting over the last appetizer. “When you bite into it, it’s just an explosion of taste,” William says. “The combination is just perfect.” The Soybean Paste Noodle, served cold with minced pork and soybean paste, acts as a refreshing follow up to the dim sum. The main dishes like the Braised Meatballs with bok choy and Boiled Fish Fillet with pickled cabbage are more than enough to fill you up. If you have room for dessert, the Kung-fu Sesame Ball is a crowd pleaser. The hollow dish expands while it is cooking, which leaves a crispy, chewy dessert that the whole table will enjoy. Dragon House is excited to join the Southlake community, which is why they chose their name. William wanted to embrace a cultural symbol while also connecting to those close to the Carroll ISD Dragons. This community favorite is sure to satisfy both those familiar with the cuisine and those open to trying new dishes. Thanks to their array of options, the whole family can find something to get excited about at Dragon House.

La La Land Kind Café opened in the district this March, and it has quickly become a local favorite thanks to its cheerful décor and energetic offerings. The extensive tea and coffee menu provides caffeine fanatics with an array of options that will help jumpstart their day. From LAX to Llamas
A
sk my younger self what she wanted from life, and I could guarantee that the words “llamas” and “Texas” would not have been uttered. And yet, here I am – living the Texas dream on our little slice of heaven called Still Meadow Farm. It’s a far cry from the palm tree-lined streets of Beverly Hills where I once tended a straggly tomato plant growing in the sidewalk cracks behind my duplex (seeds courtesy of the tomato in my Trader Joe’s salad). My husband and I were both born and raised in SoCal. We moved to Southlake for his job nearly seven years ago and settled in a neighborhood near Southlake Town Square. I kept our apartment in Beverly Hills and continued to run my public relations firm back in L.A., flying there as needed for celebrity photo shoots, red carpet events and meetings. A few years into our Texas “sojourn,” I realized Texas had become home. I dreaded work trips and the inevitable battleground of LAX. It was about this time that I was casually perusing real estate listings in bed (as one does) and stumbled upon an actual farm for sale just a few miles down the road. I joked with my husband that we ought to see it and started dreaming about the idyllic country childhood that we could provide for our kids. You know, the kind where they play tag amongst wildflowers, fish in the pond after school and bottle-feed piglets for 4H club. As with all things that are destined, the stars aligned, and we’ve been blessed to call Still
Meadow Farm our home for nearly three years. We’ve traded traffic and commutes for lazy strolls around our property; loud, inconsiderate neighbors for the good kind – the ones who’ll help you wrangle llamas, drive their tractor over to tow you out of the mud (don’t ask) and build your kids a fire pit so they can roast marshmallows on the regular. As former city slickers, we’ve had lots to learn. The first lesson: appropriate footwear. (Note to Californians: Flip-flops won’t cut it on a Texas farm.) I traded in my Rainbows and red-soled stilettos for some sturdy mucking boots. I can now ID most native snakes and have learned the difference between Virginia creeper and poison ivy. I am not afraid to chase off rogue coyotes. My husband was darn proud to see me hook a catfish in under a minute with a grub unearthed from my garden. While he laughs that I still prefer to plant in raised beds when we have acres of space (Fire ants are real, y’all!), I’m pretty proud that I can grow my own produce and that we’re teaching our children where their food comes from. Here on the farm, we’ve found room to breathe – space we didn’t even realize we wanted. Every day is a lesson in learning to slow down, to revel in the beauty of our surroundings and appreciate the precious time we have with our children.

Bring on the Bears
Katmai National Park Puts You on Nature’s Front Row
B
y the time June rolls around in Texas, it often seems like we’re already halfway through summer. Outside of the contiguous United States in Katmai, Alaska, however, things are just getting started. Salmon are in the process of their long journey home to rivers and streams to lay eggs. Bears have come out of hibernation and anxiously await the aquatic arrival. There is no better place to watch this circle of life happen than at Katmai National Park and Preserve where thousands of brown bears call home. For those who can’t make the trip, the park has web stream of the most

populated point in the river. But if you want to get as close as possible – safely, of course – put this national park on your bucket list.
Getting There Anyone who has been to the Grand Canyon can attest that some national parks get crowded enough to feel like theme parks. That is not the case in Katmai. In 2017, it had 37,818 visitors. That same year, Yellowstone National Park saw more than 4 million visitors. This, in part, is due to the public exposure the park gets. Be honest, had you heard about it before reading this? However, accessibility
SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

is likely the main thing keeping this national preserve relatively secluded. If flights in small planes aren’t your cup of tea, this isn’t a trip for you. Most destinations in Katmai National Park are directly accessed via air taxi flights from Anchorage, Homer, King Salmon, Kodiak and other nearby Alaska towns and villages. Boats can also access Katmai’s Pacific coastline, but the trip would take substantially longer. Katmai Air, an air taxi service, offers round-trip flights from Anchorage to Katmai. Destination aside, the flight itself is scenic and well worth it. KatmaiAir.com
Fat Bear Week Remember how we said June is the start of the salmon run? Well, it’s also the start of Brooks Camp’s brown bears’ months-long feasting in Katmai. Fresh out of hibernation, they may look a little trim now, but by October, you’ll hardly recognize them. In honor of this rapid weight gain, the park has formed “Fat Bear Week,” a bracket-based system in which park-goers or fans from afar can vote on the bears they think gained the most weight. Participants win nothing more than the joy of viewing enormous bears. A quick visit to the park’s official Facebook page will show you what all the hype is about. These bruins get huge! Head to the official Katmai National Park and Preserve website to get a glimpse via webcam, but be advised: They’re still skinny this time of year. Of course, the bears are not suffering from gluttony. They are wisely packing on the pounds for a long winter. Visitors of the park are able to view the bears from a nearby observation deck that overlooks a gorgeous set of waterfalls. It’s idyllic, but it’s also strategic for the bears, which are often able to catch salmon attempting to jump upstream. The deck gives you a safe, front-row view of nature in all of its glory, and what is better than that? Facebook.com/KatmaiNPP
Notable Attractions While the bears at Brooks Camp certainly get the most attention, there are plenty of other reasons to put Katmai National Park on your bucket list. Scientists have documented 42 species of mammals throughout the preserve. Katmai has a mix of tundra, coastal and volcanic areas, so the variety of ecosystems is truly diverse. With everything from moose to caribou, red foxes, wolves, minks and so much more, the lake regions will keep any animal lover busy. Along the coast, a keen eye may spot sea lions, sea otters, harbor seals and porpoise. The occasional Beluga whale is not unheard of either. So hop in a tiny plane and get your adventure started. MEMBERSHIP SERVICES COORDINATORS WORK HARD TO SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT CHAMPIONS CLUB
C
hampions Club held their grand opening on April 6. Since then, residents and non-residents alike have been able to enjoy the 82,000 square foot facility that includes various exercise machines, child watch, an aquatic center and outdoor areas. Membership Services Coordinators Anna Loveless (AL) and Kayla Knaust (KK) work to help guests and members navigate Champions Club and all it has to offer.
KK: I’VE BEEN IN SOUTHLAKE... forever. I’ve worked here [starting] in February of 2011 as a part-timer in the rec division, and then in April of last year, I got promoted full-time, so now I’m here as the membership services coordinator. AL: CHAMPIONS CLUB IS UNIQUE BECAUSE... it’s another step in the direction of progress that Southlake is headed in. I’ve heard from a lot of residents and a lot of people from around here that Southlake has gone through dramatic changes in the past 10 to 20 years, and I think this is just another step towards that progress that they’re reaching for. KK: CHAMPIONS CLUB HAS BEEN IN THE WORKS FOR... I think it’s been 20 years. It’s been in the works for a while, so I’m excited that I get to be a part of the opening of it and planning it and getting to showcase the facility. AL: MY JOB ENTAILS... child watch, birthday parties and rentals of the facility. We both do front desk operations; we both do refunds and membership work. I [also] do resale and point-of-sale items. KK: CHAMPIONS CLUB MEMBERSHIPS... are based on residency and then based on age and type. And then all of our memberships are also monthly auto-renewal memberships, and they require no contract or joining fees so it’s super flexible for anyone to be able to join. All of our memberships are also an all-inclusive service model, meaning that everything we offer in the facility, with the exception of rentals and some programming and birthday parties, are included in your membership costs. We don’t try to nickel and dime you when you walk in the facility. Really, what you see is what you have access to.
AL: PEOPLE CAN ALSO GET... guest passes along with the membership. If you’re in a family, and if you sign up for a family membership, you would get two per month and they do accrue, so if you don’t use them, you don’t lose them. You also get the plus one option with the family membership, so you can have someone who’s not related to you. KK: CHAMPIONS CLUB ALSO OFFERS... over 50 group fitness classes a week, like yoga and spin. All of those classes are included in your membership for no additional fee. So to participate in any of those group fitness classes, you just have to be a membership holder, you don’t pay an extra charge to participate in all of those classes. KK: MY FAVORITE PART OF CHAMPIONS CLUB IS... the outdoor turf and the outdoor terrace area. Anytime anyone walks out there and we open the doors, they’re like, ‘wow.’ It’s just beautiful, and I think that’s probably my favorite part of the facility. KK: OUR BIGGEST MARKETING TACTIC... has been word-of-mouth, residents being excited about the facility and telling all their friends, and especially the children. There are a lot of teens in here, so we have a lot of parents that come up to the front and are like, ‘Well my daughter said that we have to buy this membership because all her friends are here.’ So it’s been a lot of different marketing that we’ve [been] utilizing, but I’d say word-of-mouth has been probably our strongest one. AL: IN TERMS OF FEEDBACK... I think a lot of people are still in the ‘awe’ phase because it is new, large and very aesthetically pleasing. Just look at it! It’s pretty from the outside looking in. The amenities [such as] the outdoor turf and cabana spaces, those are just some of the things that make Champions Club even more special.

She’s Still Jenny Celebrate J. Lo’s 50th Birthday During Her Spectacular Tour
S
he’s been a fly girl, a maid, a wedding planner, an “American Idol” judge, a big box store manager, a fashion icon, a world-renowned dancer and a multi-platinum pop star; but this year, Jennifer Lopez is doing something nobody can believe: turning 50! Yes, you read that right. In honor of this milestone, J. Lo wants to celebrate with her fans. You’re officially invited to the biggest party of the year — Jennifer Lopez’s It’s My Party Tour, her first ever U.S. headlining tour. Come to hear your favorite songs (“Ain’t it Funny,” “Love Don’t Cost a Thing” and latest release, “Medicine”); stay to see the set design and effects that rival her highly successful All I Have Las Vegas residency, which made more than $100 million before it wrapped up last year. A gigantic sparkling cake, glamorous costumes, showstopping dance numbers and incredible technology will make this soirée one to remember! Long before Jennifer Lopez became a household name, she started her career dancing on the show “In Living Color” in 1990. Since then, she quickly rose to fame, portraying legendary singer Selena Quintanilla-Perez in “Selena” in 1997; releasing her first album “On the 6” in 1999; and becoming a rom-com star with “The Wedding Planner” and “Maid in Manhattan” in 2001 and 2002, respectively. Her catchy Latina/pop songs have garnered 16 Top 10 hits for J. Lo and sold more than 75 million records worldwide, while her film career (including her most recent movie, “Second Act,” in 2018) has made more than $3.3 billion. She has also won several awards during her lifetime, including being the first woman to receive the lifetime achievement Icon Award at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards for her contribution to pop music and being named one of "Time’s" 100 Most Influential People in 2018. When Jenny from the Block throws a party, we are the ones who get a present. Seeing this legendary woman in person will be a treat sweeter than birthday cake!

The best part is the music, which includes many familiar songs such as “Arabian Nights,” “One Jump Ahead” and “Friend Like Me,” as well as a few new additions. The phenomenal show was directed and choreographed by Tony winner Casey Nicholaw (“The Book of Mormon”). Grammy, Tony and Oscar winner Alan Menken wrote the music. And the lyrics were penned by Howard Ashman (“Beauty and the Beast”), Tony winner Tim Rice (“The Lion King”) and book writer Chad Beguelin (“The Wedding Singer”). “Aladdin” will introduce you to a whole new world of musicals, one with unbelievable sights and indescribable feelings of nostalgia, excitement and pure joy. JIMMY BUFFETT JUNE 8 DOS EQUIS PAVILION | A dash of sour lime juice, strong tequila, the whirring of a blender and a glass with a thick, salty rim — no you’re not in heaven. You’re in Margaritaville! Step into Jimmy Buffett’s sandy flip-flops for a second and envision having a name associated with the best mixed drink in the south and some of the easiest music to listen to in the country. (Hint: it’s pretty great!) Before the man created an international franchise of island-themed shirts, stores, restaurants, his own margarita mix and more, he was just a country singer who loved making great music. See him in his element this month when he will be performing all the songs you know and love (“Come Monday,” “Why Don’t We Get Drunk,” “Margaritaville”) at Dos Equis Pavilion. We may not be on an island, but that’s all right — paradise is wherever Jimmy Buffett is.
ANJELAH JOHNSON: MORE OF ME TOUR JUNE 1

TOYOTA MUSIC FACTORY | Going viral is something most people can only dream about, but in 2007, Anjelah Johnson did it twice. She first captured our hearts joking about one of the most relatable experiences in every woman’s life: going to the nail salon. The same year, she joined “MADtv” and portrayed the disgruntled fast food character Bon Qui Qui, who has been seen and enjoyed by over 65 million people around the world. Her passion for stand-up comedy has only grown throughout the years as she has appeared in many popular TV shows like “Ugly Betty,” movies including “Mom’s Night Out” and four comedy specials such as the Netflix original “Not Fancy” and “Mahalo & Goodnight,” now streaming on Hulu. See this hilariously real woman in person during her More of Me Tour, aptly named because if there’s one comedian we can’t get enough of, it’s her.

THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG JUNE 11-16 WINSPEAR OPERA HOUSE | A play about a play can either go horribly wrong or incredibly right. Despite the title, it’s the latter option for “The Play That Goes Wrong,” at Winspear Opera House this month. Produced by Tony winner Kevin McCollum and iconic producer J.J. Abrams, this show was heralded as the funniest on Broadway by a number of major news outlets and won Best New Comedy at the London Olivier Awards. Now it is touring the country, bringing its charm to audiences everywhere. Billed as the “illegitimate Broadway baby” of Sherlock Holmes and Monty Python, this show is about opening night of the play, “The Murder at Haversham Manor,” a night filled with mishaps, an unconscious star, a corpse that has a hard time playing dead and clumsy actors. Something that is so wrong has never been more right!

Here’s to Home Bars
S
ummer is here. That means the kids are out of school and heading out for a drink might be a bit more complicated. Thankfully, interior design trends are here to make your life easier and up the entertaining value of your home. Home bars are becoming more and more common. In the past, a simple nook with some shelves and a wine cooler could cut it — but not anymore. From granite countertops and elaborately designed backsplashes to custom lighting and reworked plumbing, home bars are making people wonder why they would even want to go out. Have some friends over, share some memories and save yourself an Uber expense. With spaces like these and a hand-selected crowd, your home bar will be the one to beat.
SINKS AND DRINKS This trend is only for those who are open to potentially reworking their plumbing. If your home was already set up for a home bar that included a sink, you’re all set to move on to the next step: updating it! Depending on your countertops, hammered brass is the way to stay on trend. The metallic shine gives an elegant look to any home bar, and who would have thought that a bar sink could make a statement?
MOODY MOJITOS If you’ve ever had the displeasure of visiting a bar that was illuminated via fluorescent lights then you know how big of a role lighting plays in a bar. Your home bar is no different. No one wants to drink whiskey neat under glaring lights. For this, we have a few solutions. The easiest way to solve this is by installing a dimmer switch to your existing lights. This is an especially relevant if your home bar is located in a room that serves another purpose, such as a living room. Track lighting underneath a shelf behind the bar or even underneath the bar itself is another fun way to add some dynamic lighting without blinding your home bar patrons. IF YOU LIKE PIÑA COLADAS… Then set up a bar by the pool! With summer in full swing, there’s no better time to enjoy some of your frozen favorites, served up from your outdoor bar. We advise against going full tiki bar, unless that theme fits with the rest of your backyard vibe. A poolside bar can be a simple setup on the patio or under a gazebo. With a wine cooler installed, this can also save you a trek through the house to get water or sodas for the kids.
