New Year's resolutions have a bad rap. With most failing by mid-February, according to the U.S. News & World Report, it’s apparent that we aren’t the problem. It’s the system. It’s easy to jump out of bed on January 1 ready to take on all the wellness goals out there, with everything from daily exercise to drinking more water on the to-do list. To combat the odds, I started 2019 with a dozen resolutions, hoping that by the time December rolled around at least one of them would have stuck. That was not the case. So instead of being bogged down in the disappointment, I think it’s time to reenvision the practice as a whole. This year, I aspire to fail better. Yes, I will probably be hitting up more workout classes this month than I did in December. Thankfully, there are a lot of options in town, as seen in David Dunn’s “New Year, New Ways To Work Out.” And maybe with a little help from the Bulcher sisters at Bar Method Southlake, showcased in “Building Muscle And Relationships,” I’ll meet others along the way who are also focused on self improvement and getting involved in the community. But most importantly, I aspire not to get down on myself when I skip a day at the gym or order an extra roll at Southlake’s newest hot spot Ozeki Ramen, Sushi & Izakaya. Maybe by the end of this year, or by the end of next month, we can be nicer to ourselves when our resolutions fall to the wayside. Because it’s OK to pick up and start again tomorrow. If you are one of the 20% who keeps their seasonal vow until the clock strikes midnight on December 31, props to you. But for the rest of us, I wish us a happy new year full of happy failing! Happy reading!

10 Things:

Attainable Resolutions For 2020

Keep a plant alive. These little green won- ders can improve your mood and interior. Read more — whether that be via audiobooks or sitting down with a paperback. Volunteer at a community event like Art in the Square or Stars & Stripes this year to give back.

CHAMPIONS CLUB FULL OF ASPIRING CHAMPIONS The Marq’s workout equipment is a little more contested this month as more promise to workout this year.

Try out a new workout routine. Learn about some fun alternatives on pg. 23. Make the most of your lunch break. Either get out and take a walk or watch a TED Talk during your downtime to reinvest in yourself. Nail one new go-to weekday dinner. After you master one dish, you’ll feel more confident in the kitchen and less inclined to rely on takeout.

HOTCAKE HUSTLE JANUARY 12 Start the year off on the right foot by running over to the Hotcake Hustle in Addison Circle. The January 12 event will feature free goodies, great music and, you guessed it, pancakes! Each race's top runners will be awarded, but everyone can feel good about the nonprofits the day will benefit. Learn more in Arts & Culture.

SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

Make the dinner table a no-screen zone. Instead, spend that time reengaging with your family. Drink one more glass of water a day than normal. Your body will thank you later.

POSTY FEST ROUND TWO Post Malone fans line up at Southlake's Chicken Express for free Crocs.

NEW DECADE. WHO’S THIS? Locals leave 2019 in the past as they venture into a new phase of the millennium.

Take a page from Instagram’s book, and rely less on likes. Live your life for you. Be nicer to yourself, especially when it comes to resolutions. It’s OK to start again next week.

VOICE OF THE PEOPLE Place a spotlight on your favorite businesses in town in our Readers’ Choice 2020.

Just Dance

From VHS Tapes To On Demand, Jazzercise Makes A Resurgence When you think of jazzercise, do Flashdance flashbacks come to mind? Despite the strong ties to all things ’80s, the aerobic exercise is having a moment in 2020. Southlake Jazzercise, which opened in 2017, is one of the more than 8,300 franchisees promoting fitness by getting up and moving, with or without leg warmers. If your last memory of jazzercise comes from Jane Fonda VHS tapes, here’s why it’s time to jump back in. Not Your Mother’s Workout It’s easy to lose track of time and just focus on the fun while in the studio. “If you hate working out, if you’re a clock watcher, this is definitely the class for you,” Southlake Jazzercise owner Adrienne Menichini says. “[The music] is everything that you hear on the radio, so you’ll find yourself singing along to the songs.” While jazzercise may have been a one-note class back in the day, current options promise to put a few more drops of sweat on those armbands. Southlake Jazzercise offers kickboxing jazzercise for a high-intensity workout or dance mixx for those focusing on moving. “Not only is it good for losing weight, it’s excellent for increasing your endurance and increasing your muscle mass,” Menichini says. “The benefits are you’re going to sleep better immediately. You’re going to have more energy; your muscle tone is going to increase.” 14 • JAN 20

consider THIS

Not In Your Mother’s Studio By riding the modern wave, jazzercise proves you don’t have to come into the studio to be a part of the fun. Its newest addition, Jazzercise On Demand, puts all the routines in the palm of your hand. “We are now an on-demand company so you can actually sign up for our app and you can choose from our library and do classes at home,” Menichini says. You can even find Menichini featured if you want to see a familiar face. But all of the instructors are focused on improvements rather than perfection. “It’s about moving and feeling it and getting lost in the music,” Menichini says. Not Just For Your Mother Whether it’s online, in person or both, jazzercise meets participants where they are — both in fitness and bodily restrictions. All the Southlake Jazzercise classes offer modifications to either cool down or heat up a workout. “Any person can attend any class,” Menichini says. “Every instructor will show every class modifications, so every person in the room is accommodated.” Everyone can be a part of the fun, no matter where they’re at in their fitness journey. “It’s not a room full of triathletes,” Menichini says. “It’s a room full of real people from somebody very pregnant, probably going to give birth — we have about five right now — to somebody who is a triathlete. But everybody works out in the room doing the same thing.” SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

FUN FACT: THE STUDIO IS NEXT TO A BASKIN ROBBINS.

IN SOUTHLAKE LEGWARMERS AND BIG HAIR ARE NO LONGER REQUIRED FOR JAZZERCISE.

THEN & NOW

ADRIENNE MENICHINI, OWNER OF SOUTHLAKE JAZZERCISE, BRINGS THE FUN.

Whether you head into the studio with a full ’80s look or dress in a nostalgic outfit during an at-home workout, it’s safe to say jazzercise is alive and well 40 years after its introduction.

“It’s about moving and feeling it and getting lost in the music”

VIKINGS “I got back into watching ‘Vikings’ again on the History channel. My mom’s a history teacher, and I’m kind of a history guy, so it’s kind of fun to watch all that stuff play out. I’ve also been traveling a lot to Sweden, Denmark and Norway, so the history piqued my interest while I’m going to these countries.” – Barry Foval, Tapout Fitness Southlake owner

PARTY OF FIVE FREEFORM JANUARY 16 FAMILY UNITED FOREVER

“The Party of Five” is back from the ’90s to hit you with all-new feels and emotions — only this time, the Acostas will grace the small screen instead of the Salingers. In this modern-day retelling of the 1994 hit television show, Acosta siblings Emilio (Brandon Larracuente), Lucia (Emily Tosta), Beto (Niko Guardado), Valentina (Elle Paris Legaspi) and baby Rafael need to take care of each other after they lose their parents. But unlike the original show where the children lost their parents due to a car accident, this reboot shows them losing their parents to America’s immigration system after they are deported to Mexico. With plenty of hard-hitting emotions, social relevance and tragic family drama, “Party of Five” is back for a new generation to show that family is forever no matter where you come from.

DOLITTLE IN THEATERS JANUARY 17 THE DOCTOR WILL SEE ZOO NOW

Robert Downey Jr. trades his Iron Man armor for a straw top hat in “Dolittle,” whose story is based on Dr. Dolittle, the dogmatic doctor who can talk to macaws, gorillas, polar bears and a flurry of other amazing animals. When the Queen of Great Britain falls gravely ill, Dr. Dolittle needs to set sail with his menage of mammal friends to find a cure for her on a mysterious island no man has dared travel to before. “Dolittle” is the feel-good family flick that’s perfect to kick off the new decade.

A year after one of their classmates died in detention, a new player has hit the campus dying to cause drama and mayhem inside the school hallways. Their weapon of choice: truth or dare. Truth reveals your darkest secrets, and some of the kids at Bayview have plenty to hide. Dare reaps dire, even deadly consequences. With the body count piling up, the Bayview High kids are in a race against time to find the game’s lethal culprit before it’s too late.

ask A. . INSPIRE YOGA OWNER APRIL BORGE TEACHES OTHERS HOW TO STAY PRESENT

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PRACTICING YOGA? I’ve been practicing yoga for 14 years. I started with a yoga class in college for PE credit, and I hated it. I thought it was very granola. I just didn’t get it, didn’t appreciate it. WHEN DID YOU FIND A NEWFOUND APPRECIATION FOR YOGA? When I moved to Texas and I was a stay-at-home mom. I was just trying to find some time for myself and work out a little bit, so I went to a local gym, did a yoga class and fell in love with it.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOGA? The ability to slow down and really pause your life to what’s present in the moment. We’re very much of ‘what’s next?’ in our lives. This was like, I can pause and just kind of sit here, be still and find gratitude in the moment. WHAT IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT YOGA? That it’s just stretching or you have to be flexible to do yoga. You don’t need to be able to do any of those things — you just need to be able to breathe. If you can breathe, you’re practicing yoga.

18 • JAN 20

YOGA INSTRUCTOR

April Borge WHAT TYPES OF YOGA DO YOU OFFER AT INSPIRE YOGA? We stick predominantly with three forms of yoga: Vinyasa, Hatha and Yin.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU LOVE ABOUT TEACHING YOUR OWN CLASS? The ability to be able to provide people the same wonderful feeling that I had when I first got on my mat is super rewarding. Just knowing that you’re giving somebody the experience that you have been given so many times.

WHY SHOULD PEOPLE PRACTICE YOGA? It’s learning how to live your life. Everything that happens on the mat during your practice — learning to be mindful of breathing and stay present in your body and in the moment, the ability to not react when things get uncomfortable or difficult but to stay with it — those are some of the things we practice so that when we leave, you know have those tools to be able to apply to your everyday life.

t’s a new year, and for that matter, a new decade. Back-to-back family meals and weight scales reading “you ate too much” compel you to get back in the gym and sweat yourself into shape. While the gym life works for some, it doesn’t do the trick for everyone. Thankfully, there are more ways to work out than just an endless array of Bowflex and elliptical machines. If you find it difficult to get back into a fitness frenzy and are looking for unique ways to work out, here are a few innovative options to consider.

ROWING

You don’t need a canoe or an oar to row in Southlake. In fact, you don’t even need a lake. Thanks to the new boutique fitness concept Row House that opened last August, rowers can now focus on strength, core and endurance through 45-minute indoor rowing machine sessions that work over 85% of your muscles. “We start with a warmup, which focuses on your pectoral muscles,” Southlake general manager Kate Thompson says. “Then we do three different intervals of paddle, push and power. Then we get into rowing, which is mostly a legfocused workout. It’s actually 60% legs. The rest comes from the core and the upper body.” This workout is low impact, which means it is easy on the joints but still breaks a sweat and gets your heart rate up. Kate explains that rowing is a great workout for older athletes who may have some joint pain or problems. “We see a lot of older clients where running has had too much impact on their muscles and joints,” Kate says. “When they come in here, you are using all of those same things without straining those muscles or joints. We have people who have had knee reconstructions. We have a guy now that needs to replace a rotator cuff, and even he can still row.” With over five years of boutique fitness experience, Kate never would have believed rowing would be as intensive as it turned out to be. The key to its fitness routines is its Concept 2 rowing machines, which dampener settings can be switched from one to 10 to control airflow. Kate says setting the damper between three to five mimics the same resistance as if you’re rowing on the lake. “What you put into it is what you get out of it, which is the same as if you were rowing on the water,” she says.

INFRARED WORKOUTS

While sweating and burning up, you might not think that the one thing missing from your workout is even more heat. Yet that’s exactly what members experience at Hotworx in Colleyville and Keller. For 15 to 45 minutes, members enter one of nine infrared saunas, turn up the temperature to 125 degrees and follow the virtual instructor in their own space. “A lot of Olympians will train in infrared on purpose because it shocks and stresses the body with heat while they work out,” Colleyville franchisee owner Angelique Gates says. “You’re recovering at the same time while you’re working out because the increase in the blood circulation enables the muscle to push out the lactic acid much quicker. It’s going to grow faster, better, stronger and recover quicker because of the infrared energy.” Angelique explains that Hotworx’s infrared saunas give your body a fever during your exercise, which leads to several unexpected perks. 24 • JAN 20

SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

For one thing, you burn double the calories you would have at room temperature. “When you’re in the sauna, you’re burning 300 or so calories,” she explains. “But when you get out, your core is trying to cool itself off, so it burns just as much if not more calories outside the sauna as in.” But it's not just the fitness aspect that’s so appealing to Angelique — it’s also the health benefits. Angelique says the added heat increases your endurance, makes your joints and ligaments more flexible, detoxes the body and even strengthens your immune system. She stresses that there is no added humidity in the saunas, so it’s easy to breathe while exercising. “It’s not like walking outside in Texas at 100 degrees,” she explains. “This is totally an upgrade that’s going on inside your body at a cellular level.”

WATER AEROBICS

For a workout just as rigorous but a lot less sweaty, dive into one of the 50-minute aqua classes at Champions Club. Water aerobics offers an aerobic workout that’s intensified through added resistance, because simple movements on land become more difficult in the pool. “In a general comparison, water is more dense than air, therefore leading to greater resistance per movement pattern than the comparable exercise on land,” fitness performance supervisor Ryan Svoboda says. “Your entire body is working harder against the resistance, leading to an increase in caloric burn.” Champions Club unveiled its indoor water aerobics classes in November, and special instructors lead these classes Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Ryan says each class starts with a group-based warmup, where participants work at their own pace and intensity. Afterward, they alternate between high-intensity strength and cardio intervals in both shallow and deep water, with short periods of rest in between. Benefits of the exercise include an extended workout, because water weights don’t pull a person down the same way regular ones do. The exercises are also easier on the joints and muscles, making for faster rehabilitation and recovery. Ryan says water aerobic classes are especially helpful to older participants due to its low impact. “Aqua classes are a great low-impact alternative that can increase overall cardiovascular endurance as well as flexibility and strength,” he says. “Exercise in general is anti-aging, but with the addition of aqua classes, the joints and ligaments in our older population benefit as well since there isn't high impact within any of the movement patterns.”

CLIMBING AND BOULDERING

Your fitness can reach new heights at the Summit Climbing Gym in Grapevine. Built in 2001, Summit is one of the oldest climbing gyms in the area and features over 2,000 square feet of bouldering that reaches up to 32 feet tall. As one of the gym’s coaches, Trevor Jason says there are two ways to scale walls — climbing and bouldering. Climbing mostly involves securing yourself with a rope and scaling a vertical wall. While most new climbers think climbing works the arms most, Trevor says the legs play a lot more into it than people expect. “What climbing comes down to is a lot of finger strength, legs and shoulders,” Trevor explains. “It doesn’t take much to be able to hold yourself up on a wall when you have your feet on, but then it becomes a game of getting higher and pushing on your feet.” Bouldering, meanwhile, involves more inverted surfaces, with some boulderers even finding themselves horizontal under a surface. Trevor says bouldering requires intensified arm and leg strength to complete. “It’s way more aggressive, larger, stronger moves while rope climbing can be more meticulous and slower,” Trevor explains. “You’ll use your toes to push down on a hold, and then pull up and get your weight up. That’s when it becomes a little more like bouldering and you have to tense up a lot more to make these more strenuous moves.” Trevor says climbing and bouldering is just as psychological as it is physical, as athletes need to pick their next grip strategically while suspended 6 to 15 feet in the air. “It isn’t about one more rep,” he says. “Instead of just doing curls until you can’t do them anymore, you see exactly how close you are and push yourself harder. It’s way more about your head game and mental space when it comes to climbing harder routes. You motivate yourself.”

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS

Instead of dumbbells and free weights, go 12 rounds with an old-fashioned punching bag and see who comes out on top. Tapout Fitness opened its first Southlake location in April last year, and with kickboxing and martial arts classes and boot camps, members won’t run out of ways to hit the bag anytime soon. “All of our classes give people a glimpse into what fighters actually do to get ready for fights,” Tapout Fitness Southlake owner Barry Foval says. “This is stuff the everyday public doesn’t always get to see, and it is based on a very high-caliber fighter’s routine. It just opens it up to everyday people to get the opportunity to see that side of it.” Barry says Tapout teaches a variety of different fighting styles: boxing, kickboxing, muay thai, jiu-jitsu, martial arts and even self-defense.

SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

All of the classes start with high-intensity training regiments then they end with one long bout of hitting the bag over and over again. “It is a total body workout,” Barry says. “You are hitting a heavy 100-pound bag, and it’s those tiny little micro-tears that give you a lot of that muscle. We really isolate that and hit that core down as hard as you can in a short period of time.” To get a fully optimized workout, Barry says knowing your form is incredibly important: simple stuff like how to set your feet or how to move your body when you throw a punch. But once you have the proper form down, Barry says kickboxing can create really defined muscle, not just on your arms and chest, but also your back, waist and legs as well. “Your core is getting worked out the entire time you’re hitting, kicking, moving around and doing stuff,” Barry explains. “It builds muscle, but it’s a nice, lean muscle. You won’t look bad when you take your shirt off.”

DANCING

You don’t need a treadmill or a running track to experience high-intensity cardio. If you want a more fun and fast-paced method to work out the same muscles, ballroom dancing with a partner is the perfect alternative to get your heart rate up. Dance With Me coordinator Brandon Wisner says he has been teaching dance for 14 years, and fastmoving dances like the cha-cha, salsa and East Coast swing have the most athletic value to them. “There’s a lot of footwork and articulation that goes into it,” Brandon explains. “You’re activating your core so you can move two people as one. Your trunk is twisting in different directions. It activates your back muscles, your lats, your quads — everything all the way down your whole body.” Brandon says even the more formal dances, like the waltz and the foxtrot, can be relatively rigorous on their own. Brandon says try holding any pose for two minutes straight, and anything can be strenuous. “A lot of people look at the waltz and say, ‘Oh, that’s very pretty, very soft,’ but there’s a lot going on within the body that you really don’t think about — how you hold your frame up and use muscles that you’re not normally [using],” Brandon says. “Just learning the full-on technique and how to make it look effortless is the toughest part of it all.” Whether it's Latin, American rhythm or interpretive dance, Brandon says he considers dancing to be one of the most beneficial forms of exercise there is because of how many muscles you’re working all at once. Brandon says many professional athletes even take dance classes just to help themselves be quicker, lighter and nimbler on their feet. “They all are pretty much the same dances,” Brandon says. “It’s just the way you perform them that is slightly different. It’s pretty involved when you break into the ballroom world.”

COLLEYVILLE EATS HOLDS FUNDRAISER FOR RED BARN BBQ’S VON HUSBANDS’ FAMILY On Dec. 5, Colleyville Eats hosted a fundraiser to raise money for funeral expenses for Von Husbands’ family after he passed away from colon cancer. Husbands was the owner of Red Barn Bar-B-Que in Colleyville, which opened in 2005. The fundraiser was a come-and-go event held from 4 to 9 p.m. at Snuffer’s Restaurant and Bar in Colleyville, where that day’s sales resulted in a 10% donation. A GoFundMe page organized in honor of Husbands by Paula Cooper has also raised a little over $39,000. “I have been humbled by the Colleyville community and their generosity,” Lourdes McWithey of Colleyville Eats says. “There hasn’t been a moment where I wondered if a support night would go well. We have citizens who have known and loved Von for so many years, I knew they wanted to show their support. I’m glad that I could be part in helping him while he was battling colon cancer.”

RILEY DODGE RECEIVES THE LANDRY AWARD 2019 COACH OF THE YEAR After wrapping up a stunning second season on Dec. 7, Dragon football head coach Riley Dodge received another honor on Dec. 9: The Landry Award Coach Of The Year. This award, selected by the Greater Dallas Fort Worth FCA leadership and The Landry Award voting panel, is “one that encourages leadership, selflessness, maturity, respect and kindness,” according to its website. Dodge was one of five finalists to be up for the award. The others include Cedar Hill High School coach Carlos Lynn, Lewisville High School coach Michael Odle, Frisco Wakeland High School coach Marty Secord and Arlington Martin High School coach Bob Wager. While a Carroll coach has not won this honor for more than five years, Dragon alum and former running back TJ McDaniel received The Landry Award in 2018.

DISTILLED GENTLEMEN HOST SECOND ANNUAL HOLIDAY PARTY The Distilled Gentlemen, a local social group founded by Bill Tait and Joey Kramer, hosted its second annual Christmas Celebration on Dec. 11 at 6 p.m. The group acts as a space for business owners, executives and entrepreneurs to come together to enjoy fine spirits, food and fellowship while also supporting philanthropic efforts. During this year’s holiday event, sponsored by DPC Healthcare, the Distilled Gentlemen were able to donate $27,500 to Metroport Meals on Wheels as well as collect unwrapped toys for the GRACE Christmas Cottage. Last year’s event raised $26,000 for the nonprofit, and they collected more than 200 toys. All this was possible because of the event’s hosts, Kelly and Scott Bradley; caterer, Scratch Catering & Fine Foods; and its sponsors. The funds will help Metroport Meals On Wheels give back to the community by caring for the elderly and those in need through home-delivered meals as well as other support services. CARROLL DRAGONS END SEASON WITH 13-1 RECORD Despite losing against the Duncanville Panthers 49-35 on Dec. 7 in the 6A Division I Region I Final, the Carroll Dragons had a strong 2019 season with a 13-1 record. Quarterback Quinn Ewers recorded 4,000 yards and 45 touchdowns on the season. Their final game was very strong offensively, but defensively, they met their match in Duncanville’s quarterback Ja’Quinden Jackson. The senior player completed all of his eight passes for 183 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed 12 times for 129 yards and three more touchdowns. The Dragons now set their sights for 2020 with stars in underclassmen Ewers, Owen Allen and Brady Boyd. CITY ACQUIRES NEW PARK PROPERTY Southlake now has 12.5 more acres of land in its parks portfolio. The city recently acquired the property nestled between Habor Chase of Southlake and Abiding Grace Lutheran Church for more than $3 million. Mayor Laura Hill says the city started looking at the land while planning to extend Kirkwood Boulevard. The road, which is now set to run on the western edge of the property, is only one of the many amenities the property offers, along with natural vegetation and wildlife. While the property will remain as it is for now, there may be plans to elevate the property in the future. Mayor Laura Hill says next year’s election will include a bond proposal that will ask citizens if they want the city to set aside finances for the purpose of purchasing land that could be turned into parks. SOUTHLAKE TALENT PARTICIPATE IN TELEVISED DALLAS HOLIDAY PARADE The 34th annual Dallas Holiday Parade, which was televised on CW33, had Southlake representation thanks to Katie Parr Music Academy. UPCOMING SHOWS CARROLL BAND MEMBERS TO PERFORM AT NATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL The Carroll music program is breaking onto the national stage this spring. Earlier in June, CISD Band Director Ken Johnson says 21 of his students submitted recordings to be considered for performing at the 2020 Music For All National Chamber Festival from March 12 to 14 in Indianapolis. Nine students qualified for the national festival, with only 12 chamber groups from across the country invited to perform. Those students include Kiera DiCesare, Drew Keady and Diego Pena in the bassoon trio and Zoe Bishop, Ariana Carrasco, Phoebe James, Bailey Koewing, Ria Taluja and Lauren Watson in the clarinet sextet. But they weren’t the only Carroll musicians to make it to the festival — the Carroll Middle School wind ensemble also submitted their own recording and will perform at the festival as well. “It’s always exciting to be recognized on a national stage,” Bethni Lown, Carroll Middle School Band Director, says. “We’re breaking some new ground going forward. It’s a new chapter for the program for sure.”

A few months ago my hot water heater flooded my garage and Berkeys contacted the local fire department to assist me with immediate water shut off and flood assistance. Then the same day a new hot water heater was installed. My family has been going through a difficult time…My Mother is being cared for full time in my home and Berkeys has made me feel comfortable and safe. The Southlake Stereotype And Why We Chose It . . . Twice!

N

othing thrills me more than a good “Southlake Moms” Facebook rant while drinking a glass of wine. But truth be told, there are so many things about this city that I adore. At a Dragon football game, we saw an opponent’s sign that read, “You can’t buy this win!” Well, we did win that game, so there’s that. But it got me thinking about the Southlake stereotype. You know the one! My family has been living here since 2007, but there was a teeny-tiny two-year stint in that period where we danced around the idea of living somewhere else. SHH! Let’s not tell anyone. Rest assured, that little dalliance with a nearby town couldn’t hold us, and we ran back faster than a car speeding down Randol Mill. But, it got me thinking about all the reasons I love Southlake. Now let me digress for a second, and I promise I will circle back. My husband and I went to a Billy Joel concert back in October. He’s nothing short of incredible – Billy, not my husband — sorry, Adam! Anyway, Billy is 70 years old and effortlessly performed a two-hour concert. Y’all, I am 47, and it hurts when I walk. But when he sang, “We Didn’t Start The Fire,” it made me think of our town’s beloved stereotype. Specifically, I thought about all the things about Southlake that I treasure. Well, we didn’t start the fire, right? So here we go…

Yet, when our readers found what to do within our calendars, we had no choice but to send them off to other digital resources to purchase tickets on their own.” National ticketing and event services are available for event organizers but usually offer minimal logistics or marketing support to the companies who use them. Additionally, any fees from tickets sold using national services are pulling dollars out of local communities. Thankfully, 817Tix.com is built upon a unique software package that allows local markets to compete with the national ticketing services while leveraging the network of Southlake’s premier lifestyle magazine and website.

“The big advantage with 817Tix.com over the national competition is the dedicated local media support that comes with the Southlake Style brand.” Businesses that use 817Tix.com will have full access to manage their own portals, events, venues and tickets like most other services. There is no charge to join and is free and easy for organizations of all sizes to use. Ticket purchasing fees are minimal and competitive with the national market. “The big advantage with 817Tix.com over the national competition is the dedicated local media support that comes with the Southlake Style brand,” Tesoriero says. Because in addition to the promotional tools individual clients will have on 817Tix.com, there will also be plenty of opportunities to enhance promotions through synergies throughout the Southlake Style media family. orking out can feel cold. Oftentimes gym-goers hustle through their routines with little thought about the people around them. That’s where Erin and Nicole Bulcher’s emphasis on relationships shines. The team of sisters opened Bar Method Southlake in 2017 with an aspiration to share the workout that shaped their bodies with locals. As they celebrate their third business anniversary, the sisters serve as an example of how to engage with and make connections in a new community.

Whether that involves punctually attending Southlake Chamber of Commerce luncheons or giving their clients who have their own businesses extra exposure, Erin and Nicole focus on engaging and expanding their local network through the people who also call Southlake home. But it didn’t happen overnight. The Bulchers’ Bar Method story stretches back to the start of last decade, when Nicole came to the Metroplex to achieve a goal many little girls dream about — to be a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader.

FINDING THE WORKOUT

The Bulcher girls, along with their two other siblings, grew up in Twin Falls, Idaho. After pursuing dance from a young age and into college, Nicole traveled to the Lone Star State with a friend to audition for the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders in 2010. “I was going to be supportive [to my friend],” Nicole says. “But I kept making it to the different rounds and then went into training camp. Somehow, in 2010, I made the team.” That same year, as part of training camp, Nicole took her first Bar Method class. Despite being in great shape, Nicole says the class made her so sore afterward that she had to take a step back. The 60-minute class challenged Nicole with its use of isolated, small movements using her own body weight, the ballet barre and small props. These specific exerSOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

cises, which can also improve stamina, flexibility and posture, are known to exhaust muscle groups and eventually create lean physiques with consistent practice. “I didn’t go back for four months,” Nicole remembers with a laugh. Nicole tried again in hopes of improving her skills. This time, it clicked. She spent a lot of time at the Dallas studio and was hired to work at the front desk and worked her way up to manager. “[Bar Method] definitely prolonged my tenure on the team and kept me in tip-top shape,” Nicole says. “Most cheerleaders don’t last five years.” Erin joined Nicole in the Metroplex in 2012 and often accompanied her sister to the studio. As a spin enthusiast, Erin says she was first taken aback by how her body reacted to these targeted workout classes. Instead of profusely sweating or losing her breath, Erin enjoyed being able to walk out of class and feel like she could go about the rest of the day. “I used to have this kill-yourself workout mentality,” Erin explained. “I would burn myself out.” With both Bulchers invested in the workout, the Bar Method Dallas owner encouraged Nicole to consider instructor training, which Nicole says was initially outside her comfort zone. “I never wanted to teach,” Nicole says. “I just always wanted to be a part of the team. And now it’s my favorite thing to do.” JAN 20 • 49

MAKING A HOME IN SOUTHLAKE

Eventually, Erin and Nicole decided to open a Bar Method studio of their own. After throwing around the idea of selecting another part of Dallas or a northern suburb as their territory, the Bulchers eventually agreed upon Southlake, their first taste of the Metroplex. “It was our original home in the area,” Erin says. “We asked ourselves where we wanted to see ourselves in the long term; where we wanted to plant ourselves.” On January 7, 2017, Erin and Nicole opened the doors to Bar Method Southlake. They offered free community classes in the area to build brand awareness and joined community groups, like the Southlake Chamber of Commerce, which soon after held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to welcome them to the community. “We got involved in the chamber right away,” Erin says. “We wanted to take our relationships to the next level.” Business owners throughout the area came to learn about the studio and celebrate the Bulchers’ new venture. Little did Erin know that day would bring more than exposure; she met chamber member and her husband-to-be, Ryan Peabody, who held the ribbon for the ceremony. “Life really has crazy timing!” Erin says. Both Erin and Nicole continued to find opportunities to engage with the chamber to expand their networks. Erin quickly participated in Leadership Southlake to meet like-minded business owners and engage with the community. While Nicole admits her comfort zone lives within the studio’s walls, she also saw the importance of making relationships with locals and took part in Leadership Southlake the next year. “We wanted to dig in and dig in deep,” Erin says. Southlake Chamber of Commerce President Mark Guilbert knows the sisters’ determination to get involved and embrace the community has helped them be successful in town. “They are certainly an example of how to leverage your chamber investment and find benefit in it. They are out there hustling, doing all the right things,” Mark JAN 20 • 51

says. “They have just become known fixtures because they got involved at a high level and got out of their business and into the community. It’s not an accident they have received recognition for their deeds.” In 2018, Erin continued her chamber involvement by joining its board of directors. Mark says her voice has been a valued addition to the group. “She asks good questions and honestly gets stuff,” Mark explains. “She has been a lot of fun and never has an unkind word to say about anyone.”

CREATING CONNECTIONS

While some studio owners rely on employees to manage the day-to-day, Erin and Nicole both know the importance of having individual client relationships. They enjoy taking the time to connect with those who walk through their doors and building lasting relationships. “We often have people who come in and say, ‘I’m new here, and I don’t know anyone in town,’” Erin explains. “And we’re like, ‘Great, you came to the right place.’” That’s because Erin and Nicole provide more than a workout. They provide an outlet for people interested in improving their skills and connecting with others. That goes for entrepreneurs as well. As small business owners, the Bulchers look for opportunities to connect with others in the wellness and lifestyle industries to provide a better experience for their network. Whether it’s partnering with local salons to provide deals for their team or spotlighting one of their clients’ businesses, Erin and Nicole know that their business is built from connections. Erin and Nicole also find opportunities to join forces with community leaders — like CISD members, city officials and nonprofit volunteers — to both give back and put their brand out there. 52 • JAN 20

This keeps the Bulchers on the go, but they are able to divide and conquer because of their trust in one another. They split tasks based on their own expertise. Nicole is the go-to for studio responsibilities and draws on what she learned as the Dallas studio manager, like the ins and outs of the MindBody scheduling system. Erin, on the other hand, uses her social media and marketing background to create an online presence for Bar Method Southlake. That trust has especially come in handy over the past few months. Erin went on her honeymoon in November and felt reassured the studio was in good hands. “It’s our baby,” Erin says. “And I knew that Nicole had it covered.” Erin will return the favor this month as Nicole celebrates her own wedding and honeymoon. And as a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader All-Star, Nicole often travels to represent the team. Thanks to Bar Method, Nicole has no problem donning the iconic Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader uniform almost a decade after putting it on for the first time. It’s not the glam of being taught by a former Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader or the sleek studio that has transformed Bar Method into a Southlake staple in just three short years. The Bulcher family business energy runs through the studio. And their engagement with others ensures that all those interested in trying out barre feel welcome. Whether it’s your first time or you are a regular, a trip into Bar Method Southlake always starts with a friendly face. Erin and Nicole make sure of it. SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

SENIOR DIRECTOR OF PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT SERVICES SHARES HIS INSIGHT

O

n June 18, the city council adopted the Southlake 2035 Health and Wellness Master Plan. This initiative focuses on bettering Southlake's health and wellness through collaborations across city departments and input from the community. Ken Baker, the Southlake senior director of planning and development services, is one of the many people who worked with city council to get this plan developed and adopted. IF YOU LOOK AT ANY THRIVING COMMUNITY… health and wellness is a key component, and Southlake has a very long tradition with comprehensive planning. When you look at successful cities in the country, health and wellness is a very important component of that success. WE WERE ASKED BY OUR MAYOR AND COUNCIL… to come up with a plan that addressed health and wellness. There were a number of components going on in the city before [that] various departments were doing or had efforts that were health and wellness-related, such as parks. There was actually a lot going on in the city, and so what we wanted to do was to consolidate all those efforts and identify them to see if there were any opportunities for efficiencies on those services to be provided. [We] also wanted to see what the needs were for the community going forward. IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE PLAN… all the city departments were involved, and that was one of the exciting components of that. A lot of times when we develop our master plans, we’ll work with parks or public works, but in this effort, we were involved with all the major city departments. [They] participated in the development because it was broad enough. WE LOOKED AT REALLY FOUR MAIN… focus areas. They are built and natural environment, mental and physical health, age-friendly community and community resiliency. The built and natural environment focuses on anything from infrastructure to open space. Mental and physical health is another element — in the context of overall health and wellness, some of those topics include emotional health, public health and physical activity. Age-friendly community — we’re trying to build an environment that works for young kids and works for older individuals. That focuses on everything from age-friendly amenities, safety [and] social connection. And then community resiliency focuses on not only how we respond to potential disasters but also other things such as enforcement of building code [and] mosquito vector control.

IN TERMS OF HOW WE IMPLEMENT OUR COMPREHENSIVE PLANS… we take the recommendations in each department. We’ll look at those recommendations and include those in their work plan. One thing we strive for in the city is that you see a lot of times, these cities develop these nice master plans, and they really don’t get implemented. But in Southlake, we truly use these comprehensive plans as a way to evaluate resource allocation...and we also create a semiannual report that shows how the plan is being implemented. WE SEE [THIS PLAN] AS A PARTNERSHIP… so it’s not just limited to city departments. It can include the school; it can include other agencies. We already have a good relationship with the county health department. THE CITY OF SOUTHLAKE IS ACTUALLY… probably one of the very first cities, I would say, in the state that has done a true health and wellness plan. There may be one or two other ones out there, but I’m not familiar with many other cities in the region or the state that are doing that. So it’s something fairly new, a new comprehensive plan element. We didn’t really model it after anybody else. I THINK THE FEEDBACK FROM THE COMMUNITY HAS BEEN… positive. [WE] had input from our youth, from our seniors, from our school district, and then we had a good representation from the community thanks to the board that helped develop it. It's really representative of the broad range of citizens. I think what this document does is provide the foundation to ensure that we are always addressing health and wellness through our strategic planning. THERE’S ALWAYS BEEN A NUMBER OF GREAT EFFORTS… going on in the city, and we’ve had a number of volunteers and staff and programs in place that have always provided either services or information. What this plan does is take those efforts to make sure that people know about them, that they’re in place but also try to look in the future to make sure we’re addressing the needs. And we’re looking out 10 to 20 years at how our community is going to be evolving.

et’s be honest: Home gyms are rarely the chicest room in the house. With multiple expensive machines all in clashing colors, it’s easy for your space to feel disjointed from your home’s aesthetic. If you are on the lookout for a state-of-the-art gym focal point that provides quality workouts, invest in the Mirror Home Gym. The machine hangs beautifully on your wall until you turn it on and follow along as various instructors guide you through dynamic exercises. It provides all the instruction necessary to get your sweat on, without needing any bulky equipment. Mirror comes programmed with different classes, so you’re bound to find one that meets your workout preference. With low-impact options like barre, yoga and stretching as well as high-intensity classes like kickboxing and dancing, it’s easy to find the session that you need at that moment. Additional equipment is op-

tional for every exercise offered; nothing else is required to get your blood pumping. Mirror users do need a subscription for access to its classes. It also comes with a oneyear warranty, a 30-day risk-free trial and two options for home installation: a wall mount or a leaner stand. And a starter pack — Mirror fitness bands, a Bluetooth heart rate monitor, a cleaner kit and a camera lens cap for privacy — is included with the purchase. This product also has a companion app for Android and iOS that allows you to sync your devices with Mirror, pair any accessories, customize your workouts, pick your workout music and track your progress. Simply put, this product is the best way to get a great workout — no matter your fitness level or time commitment — with very little installation required. Even if you don’t use it daily, at least it won’t be an eyesore like that old treadmill that serves more like a coat rack.

The most rewarding part of our job is the opportunity to change lives through medical wellness. Customers mainly come to us needing… hormone optimization. Our business helps others live a healthy life by... educating and optimizing hormones — thyroid, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, insulin and vitamin D. We love our work because... of the daily feedback from patients whose lives we have positively impacted. It makes medicine fun! Our business is unique because... for over a decade, we have taken a ‘root-cause’ approach to health and wellness rather than going straight to prescription drugs for a symptom. We are excited to add additional wellness initiatives to our menu of services at our new expanded Southlake location in January 2020! We are inspired by... our patients who are equally as passionate about their health as we are. Our top health and wellness tip for 2020 is... sugar is a drug in which studies show has the same addictive potential as cocaine. It stimulates insulin secretion, which is the weight gain hormone. High insulin levels equal weight gain. Sugar substitutes and diet drinks also stimulate insulin and may be worse for your health than natural cane sugar.

We are inspired by... our patients who take charge of their health and increase their chances for a longer, healthier life. The physician can offer guidance, but the actions of the patient are what determines the outcome. A big misconception in our field is… most doctors think that patients don’t care to make positive changes. We feel it’s our job to educate and inspire because people want to make changes, but often don’t know how. The most rewarding part of our job is... seeing patients have more energy, better focus and a better outlook on their health. When you’re health is good, everything else seems to fall into place.

Ozeki Ramen, Sushi & Izakaya Brings New Offerings To Town

Ozeki Ramen, Sushi & Izakaya 432 Grand Ave. West 817.410.7722 OzekiTexas.com

inding quality ramen, sushi and small plates under one roof can be challenging, but now it’s attainable in Southlake thanks to Ozeki. The Japanese pub opened in Southlake Town Square late last year with a limited menu, but thanks to the talent in the open-concept kitchen, it delivers. Owner Shawn Kim may be new to the restaurant industry, but his cousin and co-owner chef Aden has more than 18 years of experience behind the sushi bar. That wealth of knowledge is reflected in the restaurant’s name. Ozeki refers to the champion rank in sumo wrestling and was once considered the sport’s highest achievement. The two owners wanted a name that reflected their desire to be the best.

“We realized there is no good Japanese restaurant around here,” Shawn says. “We were trying to figure out which area would be the most attractive, and we ended up in Southlake, luckily.” After taking in the sleek interior, guests will wander past the bar, which serves hard liquor and sake, before settling into one of Ozeki’s booths or the community table. After glancing over the menu, guests can choose from the hefty ramens, elegant sushi rolls or flavorful small plates menu. Start out with the spicy garlic edamame or fried shishito peppers to get a feel for Ozeki’s style. Then guests can either dive into unfamiliar territory with starters like the baked octopus

pastries or “takoyaki,” or enjoy more familiar favorites like the ishiyaki steak, a stone-grilled steak made with butter, soy mustard and salsa sauce. The same goes for the lengthy sushi menu. Guests can expect to find all their favorites listed next to housemade creations, like the Southlake roll — spicy tuna, cucumber, avocado, yellowtail, jalapeno, masago, scallion and a speciality creamy sauce. If raw fish made you keep your distance from sushi in the past, Ozeki’s baked special rolls might change your tune. The baked lobster roll — a California roll accompanied by sauteed lobster, onion, mushroom, asparagus, fried garlic, masago, scallion, garlic mayo and eel sauce — is sure to impress the table. And the Tex Mex Roll, served with seared beef and fried carrot, might raise some eyebrows. But Ozeki’s North Star has to be its rich ramen. Each broth-based bowl takes more than 20 hours of preparation, which produces a deep, flavorful end result. With four broth options (vegetarian, dashi, chicken and pork), guests can explore the nuances of each bowl to find their favorite. With additional flavorful toppings like softboiled egg, lobster tail, beni shoga and nori, it’s easy to customize your bowl. But its classic renditions, like the tonkotsu ramen — a pork-based broth accompanied by chashu, a soft-boiled egg, mushroom, scallion, bean sprouts, corn, seaweed and garlic oil — proves the kitchen knows how to pair ingredients to create a well-rounded dish. The real deal is listed on Ozeki’s weekday lunch menu. Guests can select their choice of ramen with a California roll or spicy tuna roll for $13, Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. It’s an ideal way to try out a few of Ozeki’s dishes while still ensuring you’ll walk out with a full stomach. If you somehow have room for dessert, try the Matcha Mont Blanc, a soft sponge cake accented with red beans and green tea cream, topped with whipped cream. It is a refreshing finish to the meal. Mochi — available in mango, strawberry, green tea, coffee, chocolate and vanilla — also provides those velvety notes you may crave after enjoying all the salty, umami flavors. Shawn says he is excited about introducing the concept to Southlake diners and seeing how the dining industry can grow with new additions. “Southlake is a pretty small town, but it has a lot of potential,” Shawn says. “There are a lot of good restaurants available, and we are adding a pretty new style to the area.”

Goodness On The Go

Crumbl Cookies Delivers In Southlake There’s nothing like the smell of warm cookies baking in the oven. Thankfully, that scent now floats through Southlake Town Square from its newest treats destination, Crumbl Cookies. Fort Worth residents Lewis and Kristalyn Clinton opened the gourmet cookie franchise’s first location in the Metroplex in Southlake last November, and they immediately invited the community to their new store by hosting a free cookie day on November 22. Crumbl handed out its warm, chewy milk chocolate chip cookies to everyone who came through the door. And locals could immediately tell that these cookies were more than just run-of-the-mill. “We have that homemade feel,” Kristalyn explains. “You see us mixing the dough; it’s cooked right in front of you.” While the chocolate chip is a favorite, it’s not the only option available to patrons. Crumbl has a rotating menu of 87 different cookies, and every week, four new flavors are announced on Mondays. These mouth-watering recipes include molten lava, a dark chocolate cookie with a gooey fudge center dusted with powdered sugar, and dulce de leche, a cinnamon cookie with dulce de leche frosting and a caramel swirl. Guests can always rely on seeing the chilled sugar and milk chocolate chip cookies behind the case, but Kristalyn says part of the fun is giving customers something new. “It keeps our loyal customers coming back every week,” Kristalyn says. “And it keeps things fun and fresh.” Crumbl also offers delivery up to a 5-mile radius, so locals can enjoy a selection from the comfort of their own homes. But Kristalyn says Crumbl is most excited to connect with its neighbors and become familiar with its customers. Kristalyn says she and her husband are looking to open more locations throughout the Metroplex, but they are excited to start in Southlake. “We are so excited to be in the Southlake area; we are excited to get to know the community,” Kristalyn says. “One of the biggest reasons we opened in Southlake was the people. They are so loyal to small businesses, and the people here in Texas are so nice.”

Where To Dine In The Stockyards

1

date NIGHT

boot scootin’ foodie Dust off those cowboy boots lurking in the back of the closet and break out the 10-gallon hat because the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo is back. From January 17 to February 8, locals can mosey west to witness everything from bull riding and livestock shows to country music concerts and carnival rides. Whether you attend every year or have never seen this side of Cowtown, the Fort Worth Stockyards provides plenty of exciting entertainment options. So instead of just going out for the event, plan to make a whole day — and night — of it for good ol’ date night.

2

Those familiar with Grapevine’s Grape Vine Springs Winery will love its sister concept in the stockyards, Cowtown Winery. This longtime Fort Worth destination will reopen in its new location on Exchange Avenue in mid-January, ideal for those heading to the city for the show. All Cowtown Winery varietals use grapes sourced from central California vineyards, but its variety is pretty expansive with dry, semi-sweet and port wines available for purchase. The winery will start hosting ghost tours every Friday and Saturday at the beginning of February, so you’ll have to come back to experience those spirits as well. CowtownWinery.com

A quick stroll past the neon M.L. Leddy’s boot sign and down Main Street will lead you to chef Tim Love’s iconic Lonesome Dove Bistro. The western eatery opened in 2000 and has been serving up refined plates and hearty Texas flavors ever since. Start out with a vibrant cocktail to set the mood, like the Barrel Racer, Dewar’s White Label, St. Germain Elderflower liqueur, Ginger Ale and Luxardo maraschino cherry syrup. The dinner menu provides plenty of bold options like rabbit-rattlesnake sausage served with spicy mango rosti and creme fraiche, and Rocky Mountain elk loin accompanied by salsify, hen-of-the-woods, Swiss chard and candied grapes. For a spread ideal for foodies, the wagyu tomahawk ribeye, served with a Maine lobster tail, wild mushroom-truffle orzo and asparagus, checks a lot of boxes. For a classic cowboy dish with a twist, try the chicken-fried steak with Yukon Gold mashed potatoes, green beans, uni butter, pickled peppers and cream gravy. You might have to loosen that belt buckle when you’re done, but it will be worth it. LonesomeDoveBistro.com

No trip to the stockyards is complete without a pass through Billy Bob’s Texas. The beloved bar and entertainment venue has a long history with the rodeo; in 1910, it was an open-air barn that the Fort Worth Stock Show would use to house prize cattle. The space as it is known today came to life in the 1980s and has hosted concerts, bull riding and dancing sessions ever since. For almost 40 years, Billy Bob’s has presented country legends and industry newcomers alike, which is also true this month with Josh Abbott Band and Casey Donahew Band stopping by. Whether you swing by for a drink after the rodeo or spend the rest of your Fort Worth vacation on the dance floor two-stepping, a trip to Billy Bob’s is sure to be a cowboy’s ideal date night. he United States’ Statue of Liberty, Houston’s Astrodome, New Zealand's Lake Rotomahana — what do these destinations have in common? They’ve all been referred to as the eighth wonder of the world, and they aren’t the only ones. Several landmarks stretching from the Panama Canal to Machu Picchu have also bared the name. Here are a few that are worth adding to and then checking off your bucket list.

miles long, 18 miles wide and over a mile deep. Its beauty seems as endless as its spacious landscapes, and you can get a great view of the steep canyon from the telescopes in the historic 70-foot Desert View Watchtower. If sightseeing isn’t your thing, you can camp out at the Grand Canyon National Park or take a 64-mile railroad ride on the Grand Canyon Railway. If you’re looking for a more exhilarating experience, take a heart-pounding stroll on the skywalk, where you can walk on glass suspended over 500 feet above the canyon. One of the largest waterfalls in the world, Niagara Falls has the highest flow rate of any waterfall in North America at 85,000 cubic feet. This beautiful breadth of water is spectacular — you can get the clearest view of the 50-meter vertical drop from the fall’s Canadian side. And yet, that’s not the only thing you can experience at this aquafilled wonder. You can see the Niagara Falls from the bottom on one of its many boat tours, and at night, the falls light up in rainbow colors. Taj Mahal

At 73 meters tall and about 305 meters wide, the Taj Mahal is one of the most prominent mausoleums in the world, and for good reason. Built in 1643 at the request of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan (whose tomb is housed there to this day), the Taj Mahal is a massive 42-acre marble white complex that includes an 80-foot-high dome, four towers positioned at each corner, crenellated walls, an expansive garden and a reflecting pool as clear as a mirror. Be sure to take a few pictures during one of its popular day tours, and when you’re done, grab a bite to eat at one of several pristine local restaurants, including Saniya Palace and Hotel Kamal. It’s no wonder why over 7 million people visit this ancient architecture every year. TajMahal.gov.in

Palm Islands of Dubai

While only one out of three islands have been completed, the construction behind the Palm Islands of Dubai is so colossal that it would frankly be an insult if it wasn’t considered an eighth wonder of the world. The completed island, Palm Jumeirah, is shaped like a palm tree that is 650 feet wide and approximately 10 miles long, making this exquisite island approximately 1,380 acres. Once completed with Palm Jebel Ali and Deira Island, the Palm Islands will add over 520 kilometers of beaches to Dubai, making them the largest man-made islands in the world. Packed with highquality beachside resorts, sharks and sea lions at Dolphin Bay, exciting splash tours out at sea and heart-racing sky drives, the Palm Islands of Dubai are a true eighth world wonder in the making.

We’re Feeling Blue

See An Enchanting Performance By Blue Man Group

B

lue isn’t a color, it’s a state of mind. It’s being open, feeling creative and seeing the world through new eyes. At least, that’s the idea behind Blue Man Group’s latest show, Speechless, coming to Dallas this month. Without uttering a single word, the three totally blue (and totally bald) men, like the children inside all of us, explore life through sound, music, creativity, comedy and technology. They bang on drums filled with paint, make music on pipes, wear light-up suits, send streamers of color into the audience, blur the lines of magic and reality and, most of all, make sure everyone is having a good time. Blue Man Group was founded in 1987 and has performed in New York City for almost 30 years. Thirty-five million people have seen BMG perform, and the group has gone all over the world on tour, appeared on TV, released multiple studio albums, contributed to film scores, performed in orchestras and been nominated for a Grammy. BMG’s renowned shows are billed as “euphoric celebrations of human connection.” This year’s show is based on a new concept, featuring original music, fresh stories, custom-made instruments and sensory stimulating graphics. Audience members should expect the unexpected — you never know what might happen on stage. Blue might be their signature color, but Blue Man Group is anything but sorrowful. No matter what your age, background or culture, this show is intended to delight and amaze everyone.

avender fields, sparkling amethyst jewelry, the grapes that make up a calming glass of wine – purple can represent the beautiful. But it is also the color of bruises, shadows and darkness. “The Color Purple” explores these concepts of violence versus beauty in the inspirational story of African American women in rural Georgia in the 1930s. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Alice Walker, “The Color Purple” is about Celie, a poor girl writing letters to God about her hardships: abuse by her father, the loss of her babies and the arranged marriage to another abusive man. Her life changes when she meets and falls in love with a woman cabaret singer named Shug. Celie learns about her own sexuality, faith and independence as Shug helps Celie start a sewing business and finally escape from the terrible men in her life. Despite “The Color Purple” landing on many banned books lists, it has gained popularity throughout the years. It was developed into a feature film in 1985,

directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey. In 2004, it was turned into a Broadway musical, and in 2016, it won a Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. Now you can see it live when it comes to the Winspear Opera House. You’ll love hearing famous songs like “Maybe God is Tryin’ to Tell You Something,” “Miss Celie’s Blues” and “Heaven Belongs to You” performed live, along with the other jazz, gospel, ragtime and blues music from the Grammy-winning score. Purple represents strength, independence and uniqueness. Celebrate strong women who overcame racism and sexism with the power of love by seeing “The Color Purple” this month. It’s simply spectacular.

Now, the country artist headlines a coast-to-coast Whiskey Glasses Roadshow tour, named after the song that made him a star. This award-winning group self-produces its own music, creates much of its own choreography and has built a following all over the world. Not to mention, they are all pretty cute too — one is famous for looking like a young Leonardo DiCaprio! This month, see SVT during the Ode to You Tour.

AN EVENING WITH C.S. LEWIS JANUARY 16-19 WYLY THEATRE | He may have passed away more than 50 years ago, but C.S. WINSTAR WORLD CASINO | The Church Lady would never approve of gambling. Or drinking. Or seeing a comedy show. But don’t worry about it; when Dana Carvey is in town, anything goes! This Emmy-winning actor is stopping by Winstar World Casino this month to make audiences laugh uproariously like he used to do on “Saturday Night Live.” Known for characters like Grumpy Old Man, Hans, Garth and, yes, the iconic Church Lady, Carvey is truly a one-of-a-kind comedian. Playing different characters is easy for him — he once took on 36 different identities in 14 different languages in “The Master of Disguise” — but our favorite is the one where Carvey plays his hilarious self. AMERICAN AUTHORS JANUARY 28 GRANADA THEATER | You may know American Authors from hits like “Best Day Of My Life” and “Believer,” but see the rock band in a whole new light when it comes to Dallas later this month. With a new album, “Seasons,” Zac Barnett, James Adam Shelley, Dave Rublin and Matt Sanchez are ready to take the stage at Granada Theater with Magic Giant. Come prepared to hear some of the group's hottest new songs like “Stay Around” and “Say Amen” while still taking in those nostalgic go-tos. It'll be a night to live for.

Warming Up To New Neutrals

W

hether you rely on Benjamin Moore, Behr or Sherwin-Williams for your “Official Color Of 2020” content, the world of interior design is releasing its new set of neutrals for the new decade. This year, designers are pushing trends that elevate spaces to make them warm, upbeat and personable. While adding different colors into your home can sound daunting, it doesn’t automatically mean getting your hands dirty and picking up a brush. Here are some ways to test out 2020 color trends without investing in a can of paint.

BACK TO NATURE

FIRST LIGHT

Navy can be a powerful color, so it’s no surprise Sherwin-Williams is embracing the impactful hue with Naval SSW 6244. The cool, grounding color gives off a mature confidence while still providing a clean slate to play off of. If painting a bold accent wall sounds like a chore, embrace this shade by investing in a navy art decoinspired tufted couch for your formal living room. With gold accents and pops of warmer colors, like First Light and Back To Nature, these smaller additions can help your home’s aesthetic flow together.

With a soft feel and rosy finish, Benjamin Moore’s First Light 2102-70 promises to brighten rooms with a timeless feel. This uplifting color may feel feminine — it is pink after all — but thanks to its calming and understated hue, it acts as a neutralizer when paired with other rich colors. Add a touch of First Light into your home with a pair of plush accent chairs or a new duvet to feel the energy it provides, similar to the radiating shine of dawn that revitalizes each new day.

Also drawing inspiration from our environment, Behr’s Back To Nature S340-4 is an updated neutral with a calming vibe. This light green gives off that indoor-outdoor living feel, which has become even more popular as of late, all while providing a foundation for a natural palate. Whether you update a home cornerstone like your kitchen table with a light green version or find some BackTo-Nature-esque throw pillows for your leather couch, it’s an easy color to complement what already works in your home.
