If you ask Emily Williams Knight, Ed.D. (and we did), she’ll fill you in on how her personal journey toward that elusive work-life balance left her feeling frustrated and unfulfilled. After more than 20 years of ever-increasing experience as a CEO, wife and mother of twins, she’s forged a new path that aims to blend life, not balance it. Invariably, it still takes a village and she is thankful for both her colleagues and her community who have become an integral part of her “blend”. WHEN WERE YOU DIAGNOSED WITH BREAST CANCER? October 2014. Within the week of my diagnosis I was scheduled for a double mastectomy. My reconstruction happened in December 2014, and I started chemotherapy a week later. HOW DID YOU TAKE THE NEWS? I was totally stunned. I found it through a routine mammogram that I never missed. But as soon as the radiologist left me in the waiting room, I knew. My heart was beating so hard. It was the most eye-opening experience. HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH THE NONPROFIT SUSAN G. KOMEN? I always knew about Susan G. Komen, but the first time I did the Race for the Cure was October 2015. I had tears the whole time. My husband was by my side through it all, and we wanted to pay it forward. Seeing all the people participating in the walk was just amazing. This year will be my fifth time doing the walk. HOW DO YOU BRING LIGHT TO THE SITUATION? I think it’s my positive attitude. I just try to put as much positivity out there that I can. You always have to find the positive and light.

It’s amazing to see the survivors get VIP Treatment. They get goodie bags, flowers and comradery. The whole thing is to make them feel special. My perspective changed once I saw what Susan G. any working moms try to do it all. They pack lunches and plan budgets, help with homework and hold staff meetings, give high fives and offer handshakes. It’s a swirling mélange of joys and responsibilities, both personally and professionally. However, by pouring so much into others, many women find that their own cups run dry. In their pursuit of a work-life balance, women often end up depleted.

It’s no surprise that many working moms run on empty. Workplace burnout is an occupational phenomenon. A recent Gallup survey shows nearly one in four employees feel burned out always or often, and another 44% say they feel burned out sometimes. Moms who aren’t in the workforce can also experience burnout, according to the National Institute of Health. Homemakers can suffer from the effects of overwork or chronic stress, just as those who report to a job. Southlake mom and Texas Restaurant Association (TRA) CEO Emily Williams Knight says it doesn’t have to be this way. She wants women to know that a full life shouldn’t be a delicate balancing act but a beautiful blend. A SEAT AT THE TABLE With more than 20 years of experience and success in national and global leadership positions, Knight knows what it takes to thrive in the workplace and to blaze new trails. She took the helm at the TRA on August 1, becoming the first female leader in the organization’s 82-year history. Only 23% of her 118 board members are women. In a season of change, Knight is confident and excited about what lies ahead for the association and the restaurant industry. “I have to remain true to what helped me be successful while being nimble enough to assimilate,” says Knight. “If I hire the right people, hold them accountable and lead from the front, I can expect great things.” The TRA represents the state’s $66 billion restaurant industry, which is comprised of more than 48,000 locations and boasts a workforce that’s 1.34 million employees strong. Knight has a big ambition for the TRA — to be the nation’s No. 1 state association. Knight’s background and track record of success indicate she has every intention of getting there. Knight holds a doctorate in higher education leadership from Walden University, an honorary doctorate of humane letters from Newbury College in Brookline, Mass., a master’s degree in management from Troy University in Troy, Alabama, a bachelor’s degree in hospitality administration from Boston University and an associate’s degree in hotel and restaurant administration from Newbury College. Knight has led student recruitment for two of the world’s top five hospitality schools and advocated for skills training programs to fill the growing number of restaurant and hospitality job openings. She’s also a member of several boards and committees, volunteering her knowledge and insights for the betterment of the restaurant industry. There’s no denying that Knight is an accomplished business executive and leader who’s at the forefront of a massive industry. But that’s not all there is to her.

LIFE INTERMINGLED Like many other women in business, Knight is also a wife and a mom. She and her husband of 24 years, Alec, are parents to twin 13-year-old daughters, Elizabeth and Olivia. They also have a rescue dog named Murphy. In the past 24 years, their family has moved nine times. “I wouldn’t have achieved what I have without Alec,” she says. “He’s such an unsung hero.” While she’s grateful for her husband, she admits that for many years, she struggled to find that elusive work-life balance so many seek. She divided her life into neat categories: home and work. With two sides of her life competing for her attention, Knight often felt like she wasn’t doing enough. If she missed a conference call, she felt guilty as a professional. If she took the call, she felt like she wasn’t being a good mom. “Many women are taught that you can’t show fear or emotion. You just try to fit into your work environment,” she says. “I drew lines between work and family, but then I realized that work and personal life are allies.” Knight says that when she acknowledged she’s a parent, a wife, a friend, an employee and so much more, her well-being improved immensely. “I started calling it ‘the blend,’” she says. “The most empowering moment was when I realized there isn’t such a thing as balance. Balance doesn’t exist because no two days are alike.” Sometimes, Knight is sitting in a business meeting hundreds of miles from her Southlake home. Other times, she’s cheering on her daughters at a sporting event. Both are important, but Knight no longer feels the need to restore balance on one side or the other. Instead, she blends. At work, her team sees her as much as an executive as they do a wife and mom. Knight says that by blending parts of her life instead of compartmentalizing different roles, she has become a better and more empathetic leader. “When I can show the whole Emily, my team sees me as more accessible and approachable,” she says. “I no longer have two sides to my life. I’m a combination of both.” In blending, Knight often turns to her village, which includes her husband and other moms. She works in tandem with Alec to make sure their daughters have what they need. Knight might be leading a meeting across the globe, but she still checks in to make sure Elizabeth and Olivia have their water bottles for practice. When Knight is traveling and can’t attend her daughters’ basketball games, she’s thankful for the moms who take pictures. “I need others to find that blend,” she says. “I’ve had to let go of being a strong Type A woman and be vulnerable sometimes. When we all work together, we’re so much stronger.”

Knight recognizes the importance of village members coming together for a common goal and embraces a spirit of generosity with her own resources and experience. A perfect example is her efforts in taking the stage and inspiring her community at Southlake Style’s Women’s Luncheon. And in her new role heading up the TRA, she’s eager to help restaurant owners and their communities thrive. She travels around the state meeting with TRA members to discuss issues of local interest and impact. “I’ve always been mission driven,” Knight says. “I always look for the tangible impact.” MODERATION IS KEY In learning how to blend, Knight has also discovered the value of saying no. When demands for her time start to stack up, Knight considers whether they’re aligned with a work or personal goal. If they’re not, she says no — and owns the outcome. She realizes she may hurt someone’s feelings or end up disappointed sometimes, but that’s part of the blend. Knight calls this “learning not to be liked.” She says that whether women are leaders at home, in the office or in their peer group, they’ll sometimes have to make decisions that aren’t popular to all. “Women have to learn how to say no. You can’t do it all,” she says. “You have to guard your time as carefully as you can. You also have to be OK with your decision because that decision is what’s right

for you.” Early in her career, Knight often fulfilled every request that came her way. She would hop from fundraising event to fundraising event because she had the perceived notion that she would damage her career if she wasn’t there. “I didn’t know how to say no,” admits Knight. “I spent my early years trying to please everyone.” Now, Knight calls herself a “ruthless prioritizer.” She fiercely protects her time and is intentional about what she takes on. Knight says she gained a new perspective on life during one of her many international business trips. On March 8, 2014, there were two Malaysia Airline flights from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, China. Knight was fortunate to be confirmed on the flight that departed six hours after the ill-fated MH370 that disappeared over the Indian Ocean. It took Knight 24 hours to get back home and months before she could board a plane again. Knight says that while she has always been a joyful person, that day sparked a renewed sense of purpose in her. “Things changed for me that day. I went through some serious reflection and considered whether my priorities are in line,” she says. “I recognized that I need to see everyone as a human and value who they are. It really made me a different person.” Knight isn’t afraid to prioritize now and maintains a don’t-miss-the-big-stuff rule with her family. No matter how hectic her travel schedule, Knight is always there for birthdays, holidays and first days of school. She has even taken red-eye flights so she can go trick-or-treating with her daughters. It’s nourishing for her soul to spend time with her family and to also find joy in her career. SAVORING THE GOOD Letting go of the pressure to do it all, Knight is free to enjoy life to the fullest. An ideal weekend for her involves ordering meals in, finding a great family movie on Netflix and relaxing on the couch with Alec and their girls. For Knight, it comes down to being honest about what matters most. “As a woman, take a step back and think about how you’re investing your time,” she says. “Have you created some type of false narrative that has you running in a direction that doesn’t align with your core? When you get back in alignment, you’re so much happier.” It’s only natural to crave a blissful life, and fortunately, the recipe is simple. SPOTLIGHT community CARROLL TO HOST HOMECOMING CARNIVAL AND PARADE IN SOUTHLAKE TOWN SQUARE Carroll Homecoming is a big deal in Southlake, and this year is no different. So mark October 23 on your calendar as the annual Carroll Homecoming Carnival and Parade make their return to Southlake Town Square. From 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., locals can enjoy carnival booths and festivities before the spirited parade and pep rally, which will also be hosted at Southlake Town Square. All of this fun is in anticipation of the homecoming football game on October 25, when the Dragons will take on Keller Central at Dragon Stadium. Last year’s homecoming carnival was relocated to Carroll Senior High School due to inclement weather. And the parade was cancelled all together. But this year, the Dragons hope that the lively activities will be bigger and better than ever. CARROLL CROSS COUNTRY EARNS FIVE WINS AT SOUTHLAKE INVITATIONAL More than 2,600 runners came out to the Carroll Cross Country 15th annual Southlake Invitational at Bob Jones Park on Saturday, September 7. The Texas heat didn’t stop the day’s 78 teams perform with impressive finishes, nor did it stop the Southlake teams earn five first place finishes and a second place finish. Dragon Varsity Elite Boys placed first and were led by Nate Lannen, who placed second overall. Tim McElaney, Antonio Florcruz, Salomon Chavez and Michael McCabe also scored highly overall. Dragon Varsity Elite Girls also finished first and were led by Jenna Holland, who placed third overall. Kaylie Cox, Alexa Karmis, Tatum Foreman, Abigail McIlvain and Lydia Lo were also in the top 20 finishers. Dragon Varsity Boys, led by Grant Anderson who placed first overall, also finished first in their division. Logan Schaunaman, Mason Alexander, Bryan Fernando and Robert Freeman also had impressive times. Dragon Varsity Girls, led by Ava Brushaw who placed second overall, also finished first. Nikoletta Shockle, Brynn Floreano, Audrey Dunn and Mia Tesoriero also racked up points for the team. The Elite JV boys finished second and Ethan Satsky finished third overall in his division. Nathan Upadhyay, Andrew Oberhalzer, Jake Booher and JJ Pino also scored for the team. TWENTY-THREE CARROLL STUDENTS NAMED NATIONAL MERIT SEMIFINALISTS The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced their semifinalists for the 65th annual National Merit Scholarship program, and the list featured 23 Carroll students. ‘AFTER THE ENCORE’ PODCAST SHOWCASES LOCAL ARTISTS Have you ever seen a band or musician play and just wondered who’s the person behind the mic? Joe Shaw, Bedford resident and host of DTALKS Podcast, is taking a dive into these creatives’ stories with his new project “After the Encore.” This podcast, which premiered on Friday, August 30, focused its first season (“Volume 1: The Stars At Night”) on Texas-based artists. Two of them – Ansley and Todd Pipes – have local ties. Ansley, an indie soul artist originating from Grapevine who is featured on the third track, sits down with Joe to discuss how she found her voice and what inspires her to perform. Todd Pipes, the lead singer of the ’90s band “Deep Blue Something” showcased on the sixth episode or track, shares how the group’s hit single “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” put its music on the map. After founding the band with his brother at the University of North Texas, the Southlake local saw how one show in Dallas could change a band’s projection. MISS SOUTHLAKE AND MISS SOUTHLAKE OUTSTANDING TEEN CROWNED FOR 2020 The Miss Southlake Scholarship Organization crowned Miss Southlake and Miss Southlake Outstanding Teen for 2020. Those ladies are Collin College sophomore Bryton Bonacquisti and The Colony High School junior Laurel Jones. The Miss Southlake Competition included eight contestants while the Miss Southlake Outstanding Teen competition featured six women. Both competitions featured evening wear portions and a 90-second talent performance that showed off the candidates' unique abilities. Bryton won for her unique ventriloquism routine while Jones won for her singing ability. Executive director DaNae Couch Lowe says the competition was so successful that they sold out of their original 184 seat theater and had to add extra chairs to accommodate guests. As Miss Southlake and Outstanding Teen 2020, Bryton and Laurel will appear throughout the city and surrounding areas to make appearances on behalf of the Miss Southlake Scholarship Organization, as well as advocate for their social initiatives, Heart of the Issue: Life Without Limits and Behind the S.A.S.H. respectively.

SPOTLIGHT community SIX CISD JUNIORS ACHIEVE EAGLE SCOUT RANK Six CISD juniors extended their wings and became eagles last month at White’s Chapel UMC. The six boys who achieved the rank include Brendan Alm, Jac Cunningham, Drew Carlton, Braxton Neiman and John and David Peebles. The six boys first joined the Cub Scouts during their elementary years at Old Union Elementary High School. Twenty-one merit badges and a community service project later, the boys earned their eagle scout ranking, which only four percent of scouts ever achieve. Mayor Pro Tem Shawn McCaskill delivered the honors to the scouts on the Southlake City Council’s behalf.
IDF COMBAT VETERAN SPEAKS AT CHABAD COMMUNITY EVENT An Israel Defense Forces combat veteran, machine gunner and Krav Maga instructor spoke to the public during a community event in September at the Chabad of Southlake. When he was 19, Leibel Mangel left his home in Cincinnati to enlist in the Israeli forces, where he participated in several high-profile anti-terror operations with the 900th Kfir Brigade. Now a public speaker who tours and advocates for Jewish causes and outreach, Leibel appears throughout the country to educate the public on the issues some in the Jewish community face today. Leibel has spoken on several news networks including ABC, Fox and 700 WLW, and has also won the 2017 Jewish People’s Choice Award for his activism. DRAGON CHEER DONATES $21,000 TO ODESSA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION After the recent mass shooting in Odessa, Dragon Cheer seniors were inspired to show their support to the area’s victims, so they started the “One with Odessa” campaign. The team designed a black T-shirt with the state of Texas on it that reads, “We are one with Odessa.” A green heart is in the middle of the shirt and connects the cities of Odessa and Southlake. Cheerleaders sold “One with Odessa” T-shirts and accepted online donations for those who wanted to give back. Dragon Cheer raised more than $21,000 in proceeds for the Odessa Community Foundation to help victims and their families with funeral and medical expenses. Dragon Cheer presented the check with the donation before the away game against Odessa Permian High School on September 13.

EIGHT CENT DECREASE APPROVED FOR 2019-20 SCHOOL TAX RATE The Carroll ISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved an eight cent decrease to the total tax rate during one of their meetings last month. The new tax rate adopted by the district is at $1.30 per $100 valuation, while the former tax rate was set at $1.38 per $100 valuation. The majority of the decrease comes from the district’s maintenance and operation tax rate, which decreased from $1.04 to 97 cents per $100 valuation. However, the board also agreed to lower the interest and sinking rate by one cent as well, which brought down the total tax rate to $1.30. The eight cent deduction is the district’s largest decrease in the past four years.
CISD SOPHOMORE SWIMMER QUALIFIES FOR 2020 U.S. OLYMPIC TEAM TRIALS Riley Francis is going to the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. A Carroll High School sophomore and member of the Girls Swimming and Diving Team, Riley qualified for the team trials after she competed in the 2019 Speedo Summer Junior National Championships over the summer. To qualify for the trials, Riley had to beat a time of 56.29 seconds in the 100 Free and 2:01.69 seconds in the 200 Free at the Junior National Championships. Not only did Riley beat more than 100 kids and placed second and third in both of her competitions but also she outdid her time in both categories with 56.09 seconds and 2:00.75 seconds respectively. Riley will swim at the Olympic Team Trials in June next year.

SOUTHLAKE CENTRAL MARKET ROLLS OUT CURBSIDE SERVICE Starting on October 2, getting gourmet groceries has never been easier. Southlake’s Central Market is now offering curbside service. Guests just need to go online to place their orders, schedule a pickup time and park in one of the designated spots on the west side of the store. No minimum order is required, and guests just need to pay a $4.95 service fee plus a 3% personal shopping fee. Every submitted order is handpicked and takes place between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. every day. To celebrate, Central Market hosted a grand opening party on Oct. 2 featuring live music and free food. TALBOTS PARTNERS WITH SUSAN G. KOMEN FOR ‘THE ART OF THE SCARF’ COLLECTION Talbots is hosting its second annual “The Art of the Scarf” collection with six internationally renowned artists including Brooklyn-based illustrator and designer Libby VanderPloeg. BELOVED GAS STATION-BASED RESTAURANT OPENS SECOND LOCATION IN COLLEYVILLE A beloved Watauga eatery is now open in Colleyville. Chef Point, known for its original unorthodox location – inside a Conoco gas station, is expanding into a more fine dining space. For those familiar with Chef Point owners’ chef Franson Nwaeze and Paula Merrell Nwaeze’s origin story, expect the same high-quality dishes and rich flavors. But the new restaurant provides a whole new look compared to the Watauga location. Chef Point Watauga lets guests fill up while enjoying quality dishes. That unique story got national attention, including everything from a feature in an episode of “Diners, Drive-Ins and Drives” and a front-page story in “The New York Times.” That attention has brought out an array of interested food lovers. Chef Point Colleyville officially opened to the public after Labor Day at 5220 Hwy 121 and is now taking reservations for those who are interested in trying their creations.
JOHNNY B’S IS BACK The beloved Southlake burger joint is back. Johnny B’s Burgers and Shakes opened over the summer under new ownership, but it still offers the same iconic dishes. The menu is almost an exact replica of their previous selection, so guests can expect to enjoy quality burgers, hot dogs and shakes while dining in. Johnny B’s does have a few new options, like the Beyond Burger patty. Johnny B’s originally opened in 2004 and closed in 2018 after its founder John Finlayson announced he was ready to retire. Now John is working with the new owners to ensure locals are receiving the same experience.

VARISPACE TO OPEN SECOND CAMPUS IN SOUTHLAKE VariSpace will open its new campus in Southlake. Located at 1 Kirkwood Blvd., this flexible workspace will occupy the former Vista at Solana location. After it opens, companies will have the chance to lease different move-in ready office spaces, and all of its short-term and long-term spaces are furnished by VariDesk. VariDesk co-founder and CEO Jason McCann says the company was attracted to Southlake because of its proximity to both Dallas and Fort Worth. VariSpace is currently converting the building for multi-tenant use and adding in premier amenities including a café, social area, fitness center, meeting rooms and coffee bar. The Southlake VariSpace is currently estimated to open late spring or early summer of 2020. They are currently leasing and setting up tours for interested clients.

Even at a young age, Traci Bernard knew she had a passion for helping people and wanted to grow up to work in the healthcare industry. For as long as she could remember, Chandler Fulton wanted to work with children. It was always something she was passionate about and felt she would be good at. “Once I entered the field as a teacher, I realized how passionate I was not only about the academics, but ensuring that every child was cared for and felt at home when they stepped into my classroom,” Chandler says. “Children’s development during their first five years of life is so fundamentally important. Sheri Brunson was on the very first state championship ladies’ basketball team at Carroll ISD in 1975. She was the first female president of the Southlake Chamber of Commerce, and she is also a charter member of the Champions Rotary Club. What does any of this have to do with Sheri owning and operating the first female-owned drycleaning plant in Southlake since 1992? Sheri is a self-starter, just like everyone in her family who came before her. VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR SHARES HER LITTLE HELPERS JOURNEY FROM TENNESSEE TO TEXAS
M
ichelle Carter has lived a lot of places. She was born in Arizona, raised in Georgia, attended college in Las Vegas and met her husband in Virginia Beach, so it’s safe to say Michelle has experienced many walks of life. But nothing could prepare her for when she came to Tennessee and met the Little Helpers, a volunteer organization that, in their own words, helps kids help others. Since starting her own chapter in the Metroplex, Michelle has enjoyed all of the experiences she’s shared with children — not to mention witnessing the example it has set for her own two daughters. I FIRST HEARD ABOUT LITTLE HELPERS… from Facebook. When my daughter was three, I saw it and I wanted to help, so we started volunteering. We didn’t do as much volunteering then as I would have liked, but that’s where I got started. That was my first introduction to Little Helpers. ONE OF THE FIRST EVENTS I WENT TO… was visiting the fire department for September 11th’s anniversary. Being alive during that time, I wanted to bring my daughter to the fire department to thank them. We would bring treats: cookies, Gatorade, anything and everything we wanted. The kids would make thank you cards, and we would all meet out front, go into the firehouse and give everything to them. The firemen were always so open and loving. They would bring us in, give us a tour of the fire station, interact with the kids and take pictures of them on the firetruck. It was tons of fun. WE MOVED TO TEXAS… in 2016. We lived out in Memphis for seven years, and we moved out here for my husband’s job. My oldest daughter and I were looking for ways to help with the community, and she mentioned starting a chapter out here. I thought about it for a while. It was kind of scary to think about. AFTER HURRICANE HARVEY HIT… my daughter and I were thinking what could we do; How could we help? And we were like, ‘Well, why don’t we just start a chapter here?’ I was able to talk to the founder of Little Helpers, Tran Smith, and we just decided to go ahead and do it. I posted on the Southlake Moms and Colleyville Moms Facebook groups, and I asked for help. I was like, ‘If I do this, would anybody be interested?’ My phone was blowing up. It was out of control. I was like, ‘That’s it, we’re doing it.’ OUR FIRST EVENT WAS… providing Thanksgiving meals to Christ’s Haven for Children. We also did the bell ringing for the Salvation Army in front of
Market Street. We earned over $1,000 in one day. We were told we were one of the highest-grossing days that they had. Nobody could tell those kids no. We were having people pulling their cars over in front of Market Street, basically throwing money at the kids. They were cute, laughing, everyone was all dressed up. It was amazing. I LIKE EVENTS… where we do a big thing together. The Clubhouse For Special Needs and nursing home visits tend to be my favorites because there’s hands-on interaction where the kids get to do stuff. We probably support about 12 organizations or so throughout the year. We try to keep a variety of events and causes. They’re all special. WE’VE SEEN… growth in our events and in the amount of people that join us. Every month, we get to see our regulars and new people coming to our events. I feel like we’re making a difference with the kids in the world. Even my little 5-year-old wants to help out and give back. MY DAUGHTERS… inspire me a lot. We actually adopted an area right in front of the lakefront at Lake Grapevine because my oldest wanted to pick up trash. It cracks me up how much the kids love picking up trash. Give them the grabbers, and they love it. My youngest daughter actually spent two hours there cleaning up with her friends, and they had a blast. Both of my daughters get involved and like to give me ideas. I have very kind children. WE SEE SO MUCH… in this world that’s bad. Even if it’s piece by piece and little by little, I want the kids to be able to see goodness in the world and how they can help. They’re our future leaders. I tell my daughter all the time, you’re our future. What do you want to do? I hope these kids can take some of what they’re doing in their volunteer work to create a better community.

BREAKING DOWN THE BUDGET A Fireside Chat With Shana Yelverton And Sharen Jackson Have you ever wanted to be a fly on the wall? In order to get more insight on the city’s newly instated budget and financial status, we went to the source. What follows is a brief conversation between Southlake’s City Manager Shana Yelverton and Chief Financial Officer Sharen Jackson about Southlake’s upcoming fiscal year (FY).
S
outhlake’s City Manager Shana Yelverton and Chief Financial Officer Sharen Jackson have some ideas on how to pull together a fiscally smart city budget. Every year, the work on the next year’s budget starts in early January with conversations about what needs to be accomplished. What’s considered during those discussions? Everything. For fiscal year 2020, the Southlake city staff knew changes from the Texas Legislature regarding the property tax would likely come to pass. And when they did, council and city staff had already worked out a way to create a budget strategy for FY 2020 and beyond that advanced the city’s long-standing goals while allowing for real tax relief.

Q: PROPER OVERSIGHT HAS BROUGHT US TO WHERE WE ARE IN 2020. THE CITY HAS AGGRESSIVELY MANAGED ITS DEBT TO THE LOWEST LEVELS IN OVER 20 YEARS. HOW WAS THIS ACCOMPLISHED? SHANA YELVERTON: Years ago, we started tracking data to fully understand the city’s financial health. These data sets are used to make intentional decisions toward improving our budget and financial performance. Our efforts have led to a set of policy guidelines that we’ve followed and have positioned us nicely for financial success. SHAREN JACKSON: True. We knew we wanted to balance building a great city with conservative financial practices. We’ve been able to meet our goals by using cash to fund capital projects, rather than borrowing money. If we do issue bonds, we’ll use short amortization schedules so that they’re paid off quickly. And we look for opportunities to refinance previously issued bonds to achieve lower interest rates or shorter payout schedules to reduce our debt obligations. SHANA YELVERTON: Working with council, we’ve been able to reduce our tax-supported debt by 61% since 2010, and 96% of our tax-supported debt will be paid off in 10 years. SHAREN JACKSON: But we must keep in mind that we may need to finance future improvements by issuing bonds, so taxpayers could see new packages in the future. The good news is that any bonds would be issued in the context of greatly reduced debt.

Q: IN ADDITION TO THE AGGRESSIVE DEBT MANAGEMENT, WHAT ARE THE OTHER KEY TENETS THAT GOT US TO WHERE WE ARE TODAY?
toward limiting the property tax burden. And we’re doing it while we continue to build infrastructure and provide high-quality services.
SY: There are many budgeting techniques we use to manage budget growth. We use a modified, zerobased budget process to limit incremental, unvetted growth. By stripping the budget down to essential components and carefully reviewing any additional requests, we’re able to limit unseen increases. New requests are prioritized and included in the proposed budget only if the ideas pass a rigorous review.
SJ: We’re offering the same service palette, and we’re continuing to implement city council policy through the Southlake 2030 and Southlake 2035 comprehensive plans. One of our unique challenges with this budget is change brought about by the Texas Legislature, like decreased telecommunication revenues. But with the council’s support, we’ve been able to work through those challenges.
SJ: We’ve also put a self-imposed cap on the cost growth of existing services, which limits the cost of our services so they don’t grow at a faster rate than that of other DFW service businesses. This is how we control spending for status quo services and programs. New services and legislative mandates may push us beyond the cap, but generally we limit growth by benchmarking ongoing costs to the DFW Consumer Price Index (CPI).
SY: Prudent financial management and a highly engaged staff mean residents and businesses will see us continue to work to ensure that Southlake is a great place to live, work and play.
SY: It’s vital to manage a city budget as if you have serious financial constraints and then add back only those items that advance the city’s strategic priorities. Q: CAN YOU BREAK DOWN THE SIMPLE BENEFITS FOR RESIDENTS FROM THE GENERAL, UTILITY AND DEBT SERVICE FUNDS (73% OF THE BUDGET)? SY: I always ask students I speak with to think about their day. When you wake up and brush your teeth, set the garbage out, drive to work or school, attend a youth sports game at a park or see an officer working traffic, you are experiencing city services. These budgets show what it takes to pay to keep you safe and be able to live in a clean and comfortable neighborhood. SJ: It’s important to keep in mind that the General Fund accounts for most of the costs of essential city services such as police and fire protection, emergency response, planning, financial and other services. The largest expense in this budget is for police and fire protection. The Utility Fund is where we account for water, sewer and garbage service. The Debt Service Fund is how we pay back the money we’ve borrowed to build capital projects. SY: The bottom line is that we work where you live . . . in big and small ways. The budget is the city councildefined policy document where we set the level of service that we provide. Q: WHAT ARE THE BIG DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THIS YEAR’S BUDGET AS OPPOSED TO THE 2019 BUDGET? SY: One of the biggest differences is the level of tax relief provided, particularly to the residential taxpayer. By reducing the tax rate 3.7 cents and maxing out the homestead exemption at 20%, we’re taking a big step SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM
Q: WITH REMAINING BUDGETED FUNDS, PLEASE OUTLINE THE MOST INTERESTING CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM PROJECTS TAKING SHAPE IN 2020 AND IN THE NEAR FUTURE. WHAT SHOULD READERS BE MOST EXCITED ABOUT IN THE NEAR TERM? SJ: To me, some of the most important things in the budget are the less exciting ones! Expanding water and sewer line capacity isn’t something you talk about around the dinner table, but this invisible service is so critical. Funding intersection improvements at Continental and Davis Boulevards, Continental Boulevard and Peytonville Avenue, and on Kirkwood Boulevard are projects that will help our motorists get around town. SY: We have had record rainfall, and we’ve been able to study its impact. Several projects have been funded — everything from bridge and crossing improvements to better managing drainage in difficult areas. We can’t address everything, but we’re looking at unique ways to improve our management of stormwater, especially under significant storm conditions. SJ: I think it’s worth mentioning that we’ve also included money to continue to build sidewalk segments. This year, we’ve been able to add new inventory along White Chapel and Davis Boulevards and through private development requirements. We’re getting ready to start a big sidewalk project to the east of the Continental Boulevard and Carroll Avenue intersection. We’ve included funds in the budget to keep the program going. Q: THE IMPROVEMENTS AT BICENTENNIAL PARK OVER THE LAST FIVE TO 10 YEARS HAVE BEEN VERY WELL RECEIVED. WHAT LONG-TERM CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS SHOULD READERS BE AWARE OF AND EXCITED ABOUT IN THE FUTURE? oping a world-class park and recreation system. The city council, working with the Parks and Recreation Board and the Southlake Parks Development Corporation, has done a great job master planning our system and funding the improvements. This will continue in 2020. SJ: Bicentennial Park updates are now complete. This year’s budget includes money to design and develop the Southlake Sports Complex (located near Crooked Lane and Continental Boulevard). The project includes: synthetic turf on fields, demo of the existing building, concession/restroom/storage/pavilion building, pavilions/shade structures, playground, fitness trail, batting cages, entry feature, trails, field improvements, parking, deceleration lanes, fencing, landscape and irrigation enhancements, park amenities, etc. It’s a big project! Q: THE CITY HAS ALWAYS HAD A LONG-TERM VISION. HOW DOES WHERE WE SIT NOW COMPARE TO OUR PLANNING 10 YEARS AGO, AND ALSO, HOW DOES IT COMPARE TO THE CITY’S VISION FOR 2030? SY: Southlake’s first master plan was developed in the 1960s, and since then, elected officials and staff have worked to update and implement the recommendations. In the last decade, our planning efforts have become more and more sophisticated, and performance accountability has continued to improve. SJ: The biggest change I’ve noticed is the strong alignment between our master plans and financial management. SY: Southlake master plans continue to be updated on a schedule. These plans express the aspirations and values of the community. Each year, we meet with council to review our performance against the plans and to make necessary adjustments. The budget is how we implement the ideas; it’s a seamless process. Q: HOW WILL THE BUDGET GROW TO MEET SOUTHLAKE’S NEEDS OVER THE NEXT DECADE (POPULATION, INFRASTRUCTURE, OVERALL GROWTH, ETC.)? SY: Master plans are designed to meet the city’s buildout needs. Implementing the plans will ensure that our growth is scaled for the city we will become and will help us define the operational requirements needed to support the services and infrastructure. SJ: We still have several major projects to complete, such as the ultimate library, build-out of our park system and other infrastructure needs. These will cost money, but following our guidelines and adhering to a prudent budget help keep the value proposition high. SY: Council will continue to manage our city so that we properly invest to meet the needs and desires of our community while balancing these with conservative financial management. SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

n today’s modern and diversified workforce, many employees have the option to work from anywhere, including their own home. Granted, you still need much of the same paraphernalia — a laptop, desk, bookshelf, notepad, pens and a comfy chair are all essential. But there are a few other tactics you can use to spruce up your space, making your personal workspace, well, work for you.
KEEP IT CONSISTENT However you decide to design your office, make sure to keep it consistent across all furnishings and layouts. Do you have a ceramic tile flooring that accentuates the room in a nice, porcelain shine? Get a cushy chair to contrast the gleaming look. Do you have soft-colored walls such as eggshell or lavender? Then purchase a desk and other furnishings with lighter hues so they nicely complement one another. You can even decorate your wall with a few canvases. The possibilities are endless when laying out your workspace; just make sure that your setup remains consistent across the room and speaks to the aesthetic you’re going for.
SUNNY SHINE We know you’ll probably need a lamp to illuminate your desk during those latenight grinds, but in most cases, natural lighting is the healthiest for you. Align your office to make best use of your windows. That way the sun can shine brightly or you can pop one open for some fresh air. You’ll get a fresh dose of vitamin D that will help energize your brain, make you feel great and increase your work productivity. You can also install some translucent drapes to dim the sunshine to your liking if it’s just a tad too bright. GRASSY GUESTS While it’s not entirely necessary, a nice way to add some natural pizzazz to your work station is to personalize it with your own plant pals! A few flowers or pops of greenery by your desk, on your bookshelf or by your window will add personality, not to mention a natural vibrant color. You’ll want to keep your plants healthy by watering them every now and again, but aside from that, they make the perfect complement to your bright and sunny workroom. Speaking of which, break’s over. t’s hard to miss the sleek eatery that recently opened off Highway 114. With an exterior mural, bright red details and modern architectural elements, HG Sply. Co.’s new 25,000-square-foot location in Trophy Club beckons those interested in trying something out of their comfort zone. After walking into the spacious covered patio, guests will automatically feel this dining destination is different from anything else in the area. That’s because HG Sply Co. doesn’t see other restaurants as competition. Rather, it measures itself against what locals expect when diving into a homecooked meal. “[HG Sply Co.’s founder] Elias Pope would be the first one to tell you, we don’t compete against other restaurants,” Trophy
Club general manager Stephen Arrant explains. “We compete against your kitchen, your home.” HG Sply Co. focuses on clean dishes that are built to accommodate all its customers’ tastes and dietary restrictions. A majority of the menu, which includes everything from soups and salads to tacos and bowls, can be made dairy and gluten free, providing the same flexibility you have when crafting a meal at home. “You could go to HG, receive that same result, and you don’t have to cook and you don’t have to clean. That’s the difference,” Stephen says. The Trophy Club HG is unique as it blends the restaurant’s typical offerings with the company’s sister concept: HERO, a modern

sports bar that opened in Dallas in May. The menu will sport an indulge selection for items that include butter, sugar or dairy in the foundation of their recipes. “It doesn’t mean that it’s necessarily not good for you,” Stephen shares. “It just means I cannot remove that product.” But part of the greatness of HG’s menu is that often those elements aren’t necessary to create bold, unique dishes. HG Chips & Queso, a spicy vegan dip topped with guacamole, green onion, salsa and cilantro that’s served with crispy corn tortilla chips, doesn’t contain a drop of dairy. And thanks to its creamy base and vivid flavors, guests won’t miss it. “People fight me on the fact that it is vegan,” Stephen says. “They do not believe us. We make it with a cashew and coconut milk base, so when you cook it down it makes a natural rue. That first scoop tells you all you need to know.” HG offers an array of American classics including Frito pie, burgers and pasta, but by using cleaner ingredients, each of these traditional plates comes out with a fresh twist. Guests may not typically order spiralized zucchini in place of noodles, but when paired with garlic, tomato, Eggland’s Best eggs, chard, caramelized onion, pickled sweet peppers and green olives, these zoodles, as they are called, are anything but bland. For those who enjoy building their own entrees with substitutions and ingredient alterations, HG’s signature hunted and gathered bowls put the power in diners’ hands. After selecting a hunted protein — like grilled chicken breast, jalapeno bratwurst and lamb meatballs — guests can choose different gathered bases and toppings to make their own customized creation. With gathered options like smoked almond romesco, honey-garlic Brussels sprouts and chile-braised black beans, each of these clean items elevates the dish’s flavor profile. If that amount of choice leaves you anxious, rest assured HG’s trained staff stand ready with recommendations. It’s easy to choose something on the menu that fits your typical taste, but HG wants to encourage its diners to get out of their comfort zone and try dishes that expand their palate. “I coach my staff from day one: you cannot be an order taker and work for me,” Stephen shares. “You’ve got to get me out of my comfort zone.” This is HG’s third location in the Metroplex, and Stephen says that it’s at least three times the size as their Dallas flagship restaurant. On top of an exceptional menu, fresh drinks and an awesome ambiance, HG also has arcade-style games, giant lawn games and plenty of TVs for those looking to catch the game. Overall, the space is a huge get for this side of the Metroplex, and it’s safe to say HG is soon to become a leader in the local dining community.

Southlake just got a little bit greener. Pressed Juicery, which opened in Southlake Town Square last month, offers an array of plant-based items that are both delicious and nutritious. alloween is right around the corner, so that naturally means a few thrill-seeking teenagers and adventurous adults will be looking for some supernatural suspense to mark the occasion. Maybe you’re looking for an ancient house where the spirits of the former tenants still silently reside. Maybe you’re looking for a longabandoned asylum to see if the ghosts of the imprisoned are still chained there to this day. Driskill Hotel
The oldest Romanesque hotel in Austin, built in 1886, the Driskill Hotel was conceived and constructed by Col. Jesse Driskill after the Civil War ended in 1865. After Jesse died of a stroke in 1890, several of the hotel staff members claimed to still feel his presence. But Jesse’s spirit is allegedly not the only one to inhabit the premises. The Devil’s Backbone This haunted stretch of road from FM 12 to Highway 281 near San Marcos has an ugly history of violence between white settlers and Native Americans during the country’s colonial days. Several people claim to have seen ghosts lingering, and drivers have reported seeing apparitions on the hood of their cars. Meanwhile, the Devil’s Backbone Tavern, which is claimed to have been built on an ancient Indian campground, resides alongside this desolate highway and is allegedly just as haunted. Many of their regulars claim to have seen ghosts alongside Backbone Ridge on their way to the tavern, with one tale telling of a soul holding her baby crying out for her husband. Regardless of whether you believe it or not, you’ll have the chance to put a different kind of spirit inside you at the tavern’s bar area. Visit it before the other kind of spirit does. Menger Hotel
Not only is the Menger Hotel in San Antonio considered to be the most haunted hotel in Texas by many but also it is considered to be one of the most haunted places in the United States, period. The hotel, built in 1859, claims to host 32 different spirits within its historic walls, including entrepreneur Richard King who died of stomach cancer and Sallie White, a maid who was shot and murdered by her husband inside the hotel. Paranormal sightings include spirits roaming the hallways, cold spots manifesting out of nowhere and television sets turning on and off. U.S.S. Lexington
There’s a good reason why the U.S.S. Lexington is labeled as “The Blue Ghost.” Back in World War II, Japanese radio broadcasters claimed several times that they shot down the Lexington, only to see it always return to battle. Since its decommission in 1991 and reopening in Corpus Christi as a museum, several visitors claimed to have heard screams and cries out on the deck. One woman claimed to have seen a ghost with no eyes and scars on its face. The ship’s eerie reputation is so prominent that it was featured on both “Ghost Hunters” and “Ghost Lab.” If all that wasn’t scary enough, the Lexington will open a limited edition escape room specifically for Halloween, where participants will be required to defuse a nuclear bomb before being thrown into their own mysterious adventures. he’s had five different hair colors, won three MTV Video Music Awards and became the youngest artist to have a No. 1 song, “Bad Guy,” on the Billboard Hot 100 chart — and she hasn’t even celebrated her 18th birthday yet. In other words, Billie Eilish is basically winning 2019, and we are totally here for it. Born Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell (Could she be any cooler?), this ethereal pop singer released her first single “Ocean Eyes” on SoundCloud in 2016. It was later re-released through Darkroom and Interscope records and was certified platinum in 2019. She also recorded “Bored” in 2017 and “Lovely” with Khalid in 2018, which were both featured on the Netflix original series “13 Reasons Why.” In January 2018, she released

her debut album “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?,” which made Eilish the first artist born in the 2000s to have a No. 1 album in the U.S., the youngest woman to have a No. 1 album in the U.K. and the first female artist to have 14 songs simultaneously charting on the Hot 100 chart. One of the things that draws people to Eilish the most is that she is never what you expect. She has an angelic voice, yet she loves the horror genre and many of her pictures and music videos take on a creepy aesthetic (to put it mildly). Dazzling Pumpkin Nights See The Unbelievably Cool New Pumpkin Festival This Month

lowing pumpkins are strung up with lights above your head. An oversized pumpkin with a crooked smiley face named “Jack-O-Lynn” greets you on a bale of hay. And 600 hand-carved jack-o’-lanterns light the way through a tunnel to the entrance of seven dazzling pumpkin lands. Halloween enthusiasts, families looking for seasonal activities and anyone seeking the perfect Instagram background are invited to Pumpkin Nights, a spectacular festival that is coming to Dallas for the first time this year. Pumpkin Nights features more than 3,000 handcarved real and synthetic pumpkins inside Howell Farms. These pumpkin lands include Forbidden Pumpkin City, where you can see a 40-foot dragon made of pumpkins; Monster Mash, a place for funloving people to play outdoor games and activities; Great Pumpkin Hall, which is filled with owl pumpkins and Maravilla Lane, which represents Día de los Muertos; Pumpkin Pirate Cove, where you can dig for treasure and see the pumpkin pirate ship; Pumpkin Reef, to see the pumpkin octopus and the underwater creatures inside a UV backlight; and the Enchanted Pumpkin Forest, featuring pumpkin gnomes and an enchanting wishing well. An Ode To The Geriatric Millennials
I
was born in 1982, which technically makes me a millennial — but just barely. My music growing up was more of the Spice Girls variety than Justin Bieber. I don’t ride an electric scooter to work, office out of a flex workspace or purchase cars from Carvana. I also don’t snap pictures of my girlfriends and me holding hands with the caption “v, v ideal day tbh.” No, those are my kids’ babysitters, who are also millennials, curiously. I am the variety of millennial who grew up playing Oregon Trail in computer lab at school, eating Flintstone push pops while watching “Saved By The Bell” reruns and eventually, when life really got good, logging out of AOL chats because my mom had to use the phone. I would guess most old lady millennials like myself probably find themselves in many of the same precarious situations I do these days. While the millennials bringing up the rear are busy polishing their engagement rings and dreaming up clever wedding hashtags, my variety of millennials, the geriatric millennials or GMs, are busy stuffing our post-baby muffin tops in mom jeans every time we have a minute to sit. And we are contending with the curiously new-shaped, slightly wrinkled and sunspotted selves in the mirror. I can’t confirm this personally, of course, but I’ve heard rumors some GMs must keep emergency tweezers in their cars at all times because the sunlight reveals black, wiry hairs
in places no hair should live on a woman. Ever. I will say, the other day I found two white hairs in my eyebrows, much to my horror. At this rate, I’ll be submitting my application to be a mall Santa come December. Much like the stackable Russian nesting dolls, our 24-year-old selves are just inside the surface, and a bigger shell has been snapped on top. There are times I look in the rearview mirror at my three boys and question, for just a second, if they’re all really mine. The new shell is good, but you have to get used to it. I have wonderful girlfriends, and we remind ourselves of this over a glass of wine or chips and queso regularly. We have all experienced some of life’s knocks by now that make us “pick ourselves up by the bootstraps,” as my dad says. Those difficult things have ultimately made us better, more resilient versions of the women we were at 24. The truth is, our containers may feel unrecognizable at times, but all of the highlights, Botox and Bar Method classes in the world won’t take us back to the women we were before. And I’m not convinced that’s what any of us actually want anyway. Rather than looking back, I’m pretty sure we just need to look ourselves in the mirror with kinder eyes instead. Besides, if not us, then who will show the younger millennials that with just the right top, fun shoes and great accessories, mom jeans can be v, v cute!
