Elvis Presley says it best in his 1962 hit, “Home is Where the Heart is.” The sweet message takes on a new meaning in 2020 because our hearts have definitely spent more quality time in the confines of our houses. After staring at the same four walls, it’s safe to say many are relearning why they first decided to set up camp in Southlake. With a bounty of retail, restaurant and business opportunities — not to mention one of the best school districts in the state — it’s hard to choose one amenity that makes Southlake a suburban hub. After seeing many come back to their roots to set up their own families for success, it’s clear there’s an instilled pride that comes from selecting Southlake as a community. It’s that choice that makes Southlake stand out. Southlake residents choose to buy in and engage with their community. Whether it’s by volunteering for local nonprofits, showing up to SPIN meetings or cheering on the Dragons, locals are determined to know their town. It’s one of the reasons Ronell Smith made Southlake his home, and it’s why he felt compelled to run for Southlake City Council last year. Read more about his calling to serve and how he is helping others through the COVID-19 pandemic in David Dunn’s “Writing His Own Story.” By working with city employees like Daniel Cortez, featured in “Five Minutes With…,” they prove Southlake is stronger when it works together. The stunning real estate options on this side of the Metroplex provide their own calling. Get an inside look at one of Vaquero’s finest in “Living Like Witten.” Flipping through the home of NFL great Jason Witten may leave you with a craving to update your cabinets to replicate his monochromatic kitchen or replace your tub for a similar model in his master bath, but we also hope it helps represent the many options for those who could live anywhere but choose to thrive here. Happy reading!

We Learned While Working From Home A good morning routine can make or break a productive day. There are two kinds of people: Zoom users and Google Hangouts users. Always check to see if you are on mute prior to speaking on a conference call. A change of scenery can help boost productivity, even if that’s just moving from the home office to the living room.
While going out in big groups and enjoying a meal in a large dining room may not be how people are currently celebrating milestones, there are still creative ways to gather your loved ones and revel in each other's company. Start by hosting a virtual dinner party. Just settle on a date and time with a few different families, then decide where you will be ordering takeout or delivery from. After hopping on a Zoom call or FaceTime, dig in so everyone can enjoy different dishes from the same restaurant. It's a great way to enjoy the essence of dining in community in our new normal — especially if you aren't quite ready to fully enjoy sitting in a restaurant yet.

An Ode To The Summer Blockbuster
S
ummer movies hold a special place in our hearts. That’s why we’ve collected and stored them on VHS shelves and in DVD wallets long ago. With delays of this summer’s hot movie releases from the “Avengers” and “Fast & Furious” franchises, now’s a good time to share the nostalgia from your favorite classic summer movies with the entire family. So spare the WiFi, and get ready for a blast from the past. People ran from the beaches and into the movie theater when “Jaws” was released in 1975. When the shores felt safe again, long after John Williams’ ominous music stopped playing, movie stars flocked to the beach to film famous ’80s beach scenes, like Tom Cruise playing volleyball in “Top Gun,” “The Karate Kid” practicing the crane or Sylvester Stallone training to fight Mr. T in “Rocky III.” The action of the ’80s wasn’t just on the beaches — classics like “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “Die Hard” and “Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior” took us all across the world. And there’s no shortage of science-fiction spectacle in movies like “Back To The Future,” “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back” and “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.” E.T. was an undeniably cuddly star, but even “Aliens” and “Predator” stole the spotlight from Sigourney Weaver and Arnold Schwarzenegger before they later collided in “Alien vs. Predator” in the 2000s. The summer movie experience wouldn’t be complete without a few laughs. Chevy Chase channels the frustrations of traveling with the Griswolds in “National Lampoon’s Vacation,” while Matthew Broderick skips school for a downtown Chicago joyride in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” You surely won’t be disappointed by the fly-high humor of “Airplane!,” and you know who you’re gonna call if you need some ghostly gags from “Ghostbusters.”

Who Let The Dogs Out?
Restaurants, businesses, schools, malls and movie theaters were left empty due to COVID-19. But it also disburdened animal shelters across North Texas, with dogs, cats, hamsters, birds and turtles finding forever homes with new owners and temporary stays with foster parents. Even though shelters are faring much better than usual, advocates want people to remember that there are always opportunities to help animals in need, whether you adopt, foster or contribute in other small ways.
Finding Forever Homes In March, the Humane Society of North Texas (HSNT) waived all adoption fees at its seven locations across North Texas. Director of communications Cassie Davidson says eliminating fees made a huge difference. “Since March 19, we’ve had 709 adoptions,” Cassie said at the beginning of May. “We typically have over 1,000 pets in our care. Now we have less than 100 available for adoption.” Other organizations like Fort Worth Animal Care and Control moved their applications online for an expedited adoption process. “Animal welfare organizations facilitate adoptions at their own facilities when possible and are often using virtual adoption and fostering events to continue to find loving homes for pets in need,” says Yosha Brunson, PetSmart senior public relations manager.
Animals In Need On March 19, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced a public health disaster due to COVID-19 and shut down non-essential businesses as listed under his government website. These included bars, gyms, hair and nail salons and animal shelters. “Obviously, not all businesses can open all at once,” Abbott said at a previous news conference. “A more strategic approach is required to ensure that we don’t reopen, only to have to close down again.” But hundreds of animals were still housed in shelters when the governor issued his executive order. They needed homes where they could be taken care of, so organizations pivoted to see how they could quickly place its animals into as many houses as possible.
Fostering Animal Care But even if families were not able to commit to becoming a forever home, they had other opportunities to lend a helping hand. After the Fort Worth Animal Care and Control moved its foster applications online, 525 animals left its shelter within the first week, including 205 fostered animals. HSNT saw similar success when it put its emergency foster applications online. “As of May 4, we have 633 pets in foster, including 449 emergency fosters,” Cassie says. Because fostering offers temporary residence, shelters are still actively at work to ensure all their animals will be matched with their forever homes. To help shelters, locals can either adopt an animal or donate money, pet supplies or food to their closest facility.

onell Smith has been surrounded by books his whole life. When he was a young boy living in Mississippi, he loved reading about biology and zoology from his family’s bookshelf, while in college he was absorbed in the works of physicist Richard Feynman. He’s still surrounded by books years later, whether it’s at his home office or in the Southlake City Council Chambers.

It’s just as well because Ronell feels like he’s always learning, even more so after being elected as Place 4 City Councilmember. That desire helped Ronell become an accomplished entrepreneur, writer and digital strategist over his career, and helped him gain an understanding of what it means to build a brand from the ground up. It’s a perspective Southlake will need as the city continues to reopen and rebuild its economy and small businesses. “I have always appreciated the energy that Ronell brings to the table,” Mayor Laura Hill says. “I’m counting on his enthusiasm and appreciation for all things Southlake as the council works towards the city’s recovery from COVID-19.”
RECONCILING WITH MISSISSIPPI
Ronell was born in Poplarville, Mississippi. With his father working as a mechanic and his mother taking care of himself and his older brother and sister, Ronell says he was instilled with the importance of hard work at a young age. “I was raised in a very supportive household that prioritized education, hard work and being good to people,” Ronell expresses. “One thing my dad always preached was to never expect somebody to give something to you. You have to earn it. And once you get your foot in the door, it was your job to keep that door open.” Those lessons stuck with Ronell through life, even after his father passed away from lung cancer in 2006. Living in a household with no cable or satellite, Ronell would often bury his head in a book, immersing himself in pages filled with plants, animals and insects. “Every night, my school books would stay in my backpack, and I would pick up a magazine or an encyclopedia, and I would read, read, read, read and read,” Ronell says. “I was obsessive about learning. Words on a page meant something to me.” Living in the last black household next to an all-white neighborhood, Ronell knew what it felt like to be different and alienated from the people around him. Though he was never physically threatened, Ronell says he always felt uncomfortable at school and in nearby communities. He and his friends heard racial slurs all the time in the hallways, buses and cafeterias, and he remembers how small that made him feel. “It was not a very welcoming place,” Ronell recalls. “It wasn’t like the Klan was out marching, but you heard the N-word going to school and all throughout the day. I wanted a place of my own. I wanted somewhere where I could be the person I knew I could be, and I knew that was never going to be actualized in Mississippi.” When Ronell graduated from high school, he joined his sister at Georgia State University, after being impressed by their research programs, with a desire to pursue neurology or animal sciSOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM
ence. But his sister wasn’t the only woman waiting for Ronell at school. His future wife Rachel, who was also a Mississippi native, had also enrolled. “She was the first girl to ever impress me,” Ronell expresses. “She knew more about accounting and finance and the newest Apple computer than anyone else. She wasn’t materialistic. She was really, really focused.” And even though he and his family return to Mississippi regularly to visit Rachel’s family, he still feels a “visceral” reaction upon each visit. He says one day he’ll have to have to “reconcile” with Mississippi. “I realized it was easy to hate or dislike people,” Ronell states. “But I wanted to find power through that. I wanted to learn how to block that out, to not even have any animus to the people who were saying those things. It hardened me in a way that I feel like it benefited me.”
FROM GEORGIA TO TEXAS
After graduating from Georgia State University, Ronell did post-graduate research in cognitive psychology at Georgia Tech before he went to work as a business writer for the “Athens Daily News” in 2001. Ronell wrote in-depth features, news articles and columns about Athens’ automotive industry, and he would occasionally write book reviews for the paper’s art and entertainment section. “It was a really cool experience, especially for a shy Mississippi kid like me,” Ronell states. “It really helped me get out of my comfort zone, being afraid to accost others and be willing to draw things out of people. You don’t realize the power of that.” After working in media for several years, including a sixyear stint as head of “ESPN Magazine,” Ronell would later move to Texas and start his own digital brand strategy business in 2011. While he and his wife were living temporarily in Colleyville in 2012, they were looking for someplace to settle down with their two daughters. Ronell says they considered over 100 houses, but none of them felt like home. “Every time we consulted with our realtor, we asked her ‘Where was the next Southlake?’” Ronell recalls. “She’d show us places in Fairview, McKinney, West Plano. They had really strong schools and nice houses, but none of them compared to Southlake.” After researching school systems and houses across the Metroplex, it was ultimately the people who tipped the scales in their family’s decision to make Southlake their nesting place. Whereas his hometown was indifferent and dismissive towards him, Ronell found Southlake warm and welcoming. He knew he wanted his girls to grow up in a city as accepting as Southlake. “We did not move here just for the schools,” Ronell says. “I knew Southlake had people that I wanted to be around and that I wanted my kids to be around. Southlake is truly unlike anywhere else.” He also became enamored by the story of Bob Jones — a man who, like Ronell, grew up under repressive circumstances only to rise above them and find his home in Southlake. Ronell even enjoyed researching and portraying Bob Jones in the Southlake Historical Society’s Ghosts of Southlake Past tour last year. “You had a black man that lived in this area and was one of the wealthiest around during a time where they were hanging people for being union sympathizers,” Ronell expresses. “One of the most famous people to come from this prosperous city was a black man fresh out of slavery, who grew to JUN 20 • 25
WHAT LEADERSHIP LOOKS LIKE
be incredibly successful in this area. This guy was able to thrive right here.” Ronell has been searching for a community to belong to for quite some time. It appears he has found one in Southlake.
RUNNING FOR CITY COUNCIL
It didn’t take long for Ronell to contribute to the community once he and his family moved to Southlake. He served on the zoning board of adjustment from 2015-2019, was a citizen on patrol for Southlake DPS and was appointed to the CISD District Diversity Committee. He also made it a point to be at as many Dragon football games and events as possible. In December 2018, a friend approached Ronell to run for Carroll ISD’s school board, which he swiftly rejected. But after he was approached yet again to consider running for one of the city council’s open seats, Ronell turned to God for his answer. “I always say that I want to be Gideon for God. That whatever it is I ultimately do, I want it to be something I wouldn't have chosen, but something that God would have called me to do anyway,” Ronell says. “I asked him if this wasn’t something he wanted me to do, show me a sign — and he never did.” The next year, he announced his run for Place 4 City Council. He personally knew former Place 5 Councilmember John Huffman, who he helped him make connections on the council and answered any questions he had during the campaign. "With Ronell, it's always about the art of the possible and what he could do to make things better,” John says. “I appreciate that quality because making the Southlake community the best it can be is what we are all aiming for." Many felt that Ronell was going to lose since his opponent had long-standing roots in the community. Yet by the end of election night, Ronell won by 2,143 ballots, or 58.19% of the vote. On May 23, he found himself being sworn into the Southlake City Council. “It’s tough to even acknowledge that I’m a politician now,” he chuckles. 26 • JUN 20
Ronell knew even before campaigning that the upcoming term would call for immediate action on important and highly visible projects. Within months of his swearing in, he and the rest of the council had to vote on the city’s FY2020 budget and 3.7 cent tax reduction. Soon thereafter, he would be part of the vote on a 270 apartment complex proposed by the developers of Southlake Town Square. Ronell remembers residents filling in both the main council chambers and the overflow rooms to speak against the project. The council unanimously voted to deny the application. “It was a trial by fire so to speak,” Ronell chuckles. “This was the type of thing that causes people to lose elections.” And yet, the greatest challenges were ahead of Ronell. When COVID-19 came to Texas in March, Mayor Hill and the city council issued an emergency declaration that limited social gatherings and closed the doors to businesses and restaurants. As a business owner himself, Ronell knew how much the pandemic affected residents and business owners alike in the area. After a year with the city council, Ronell says it was one of the few times he felt powerless. “As a public servant, you don’t like seeing your city the way you’re seeing it,” Ronell expresses. “I wake up every morning, check my phone and there’s always a message saying ‘When are you guys going to open up the city? Look at this data, what do you think about this?’ It’s a lot to manage.” Ronell enjoys interacting with the people he serves — conversing directly with residents the same way he did as a journalist. While keeping his social distances Ronell misses bumping into people at Central Market or around town. It was through those happy accidents where he got to know his neighbors and learned about the biggest issues pressing residents of the city. But through reopening and transitioning into a new normal, Ronell has confidence Southlake will persevere the best way it knows how — together. “I tell people that other cities fight one another. But in Southlake, we have something to fight for,” Ronell expresses. “So we may disagree — even vehemently so — but we keep fighting to move the community forward.” Ronell believes Southlake has something worth standing and fighting for: each other. As the city continues toward whatever the future holds, he urges residents to look out for and support one another. Even with their differences, everyone is united under one identity in Southlake. This level of acceptance and community is not lost on him as he works tirelessly to maintain it. SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

Berkeys was quick to respond to my call for service. The contact person was so good at providing information concerning service. She was so very helpful and the follow-up reminders/details were excellent. The service technician was outstanding. He was so thorough. I thought I had a number of leaks, but he took the time to show me the path of the water. I was truly impressed with the service that I received. -G. Jenkins

CARROLL ISD HOLDS GRADUATION CEREMONY ON MAY 29 Although the end of their senior year didn’t go as they expected, seniors still gathered together on May 29 at Dragon Stadium for an outdoor graduation ceremony. After graduates picked up their cap, gown and invitations at Carroll Senior High School, they headed over to Dragon Stadium where they were recognized for their hard work and accomplishments. Graduates maintained social distancing, and the district put up hand sanitizer stations all around the venue. “There are all kinds of tragedies caused by COVID-19, and one of those is losing all of the sentimental moments of your senior year,” CISD Board of Trustees President Sheri Mills expresses. “I am genuinely so sad for each of our graduates for what they have lost, and to give them back graduation is very important. This is so meaningful because when you are just 18 years old, you really have waited your whole life to cross that stage.”

SOUTHLAKE STYLE HOSTS ZERO-K VIRTUAL FUN RUN TO RAISE MONEY FOR PANDEMIC RELIEF Stay at home orders didn’t stop readers of Southlake Style from having fun and supporting its community. The team at Southlake’s longest-running city magazine put its creativity and marketing skills to work to launch its very first community-wide virtual fundraising event in April: the Zero-K Virtual Fun Run. Starting April 22, Southlake Style invited fans to buy a custom designed shirt and “race at their own pace.” The team partnered with Metroport Meals on Wheels to promote the virtual event where community members could pledge on the honor system to run, walk or sit any distance they wanted before May 15. One hundred percent of the proceeds of shirt sales, totaling $750, went to purchase gift cards from Southlake staple Feedstore BBQ and More, one of the organization’s local restaurant partners. 30 • JUN 20
TEXAS GOV. GREG ABBOTT CONTINUES TO REOPEN BUSINESSES Texas Gov. Greg Abbott rolled out two phases of a strategic plan to reopen the state’s economy. On May 1, restaurants, retailers, movie theaters, museums and libraries were allowed to open at 25% capacity, while barbershops, hair and nail salons could reopen on May 8. On May 18, gyms, child care centers, beauty and personal care services, massage parlors and youth clubs could reopen, while bars, bowling alleys, bingo halls, skating rinks, zoos and aquariums could reopen on May 22. Youth camps and professional sports such as basketball, baseball and baseball reopened on May 31. If conditions worsen and hospitals face greater pressure in the future, Abbott says the state will re-evaluate then and take action. “Texans have always faced adversity, and Texans have always prevailed,” Abbott says at a May 18 press conference. “We are getting through this, but now more than ever, we need to work together as one Texas.”

YOUNG MEN’S SERVICE LEAGUE DONATES GROCERIES TO COMMUNITY TABLE Community Table got some combined help from Southlake’s Del Frisco’s Grille and the Lakes chapter of the Young Men’s Service League last week. After YMSL canceled its year-end celebrations due to COVID-19, its local chapters were allowed to donate collected funds to a charity of their choice. Lakes chapter president Joan Shockley says their board of directors voted unanimously to support the food pantry at Community Table. Joan says when she asked the Community Table what their greatest needs were, she was surprised to find out they needed shopping carts for their older and physically challenged members. Not settling for the minimum, Joan reached out to Del Frisco’s Grille through a mutual contact and collected pounds of rice, peanut butter, tuna and butter from the restaurant at wholesale price. Joan says she was proud that some of the younger members got to help a community in need and hopes they appreciated the lessons they’ve learned from the experience. “We have two missions: to serve others in our community and teach our boys about giving back and the kind of leaders they want to be,” Joan expresses. “It only takes one example, one experience to have it really hit their hearts to where they kind of get it.”
LOCAL AUTHOR PUBLISHES ‘GOODNIGHT, SOUTHLAKE’ CHILDREN’S BOOK Connie Cooley loves to tell Southlake’s story. As the Southlake Historical Society’s president, Connie previously published two books about Southlake Carroll football and the history of Southlake. Now she’s making her first foray into children’s books with “Goodnight, Southlake,” which features 15 Southlake sites including Dragon Stadium, Bicentennial Park and Southlake Town Square. Although she never wrote a children’s book before, Connie knew enough about Southlake’s long history to be able to write a narrative that appealed to kids. “Ever since we moved to Southlake, I’ve always had a soft spot for it,” she says. “I think it’s fun to see a city like Southlake grow, but you can harken back to what it looked like when an earlier generation lived here.”

HOUSE OF SHINE HOSTS DRIVE-THRU RISE AND SHINE GATHERING While COVID-19 put many year-end celebrations in jeopardy, that didn’t stop House of Shine from holding its annual event with a strong turnout on May 7. House of Shine is a Grapevine nonprofit that organizes development programs for women and children. Their Rise and Shine workshop series involves nine months of lessons starting in September, and at the end of their program, members gather for a big celebration usually held in May. But House of Shine’s regular plans came to a grinding halt in March due to social distancing. While their remaining lessons were simple enough to transition online, founder and executive director Claudia Beeny began brainstorming other ways they might be able to do their yearend celebration that didn’t involve Zoom or Google Hangouts. So they reformatted their celebration into a drive-thru gathering where over 40 cars rode up to the REC of Grapevine for the day’s festivities. Participants tuned into the radio channel to hear Claudia’s keynote speech, extenders were used to hand attendants goodies and prizes and they played games in their vehicles such as Honk If, Simon Says and a car scavenger hunt.

hen founder Scott Simmons started SCH Homes more than 30 years ago, he set the standard for collaborative homebuilding and luxury living. Closely collaborating with their clients to bring their vision to life, Neal and Jon strike a unique balance of warm and elegant spaces with meticulous attention to architectural and design details. “The product we produce is such high quality,” Neal expresses. “Most people are blown away when they walk into our homes for the first time. Everything is unique; everything is one-off; everything we do is custom to the client. There’s not a lot of things that we do from job to job that are the same.” Because of this, collaboration is one of the most important aspects of SCH Homes’ handiwork. Neal and Jon work across a whole spectrum of trade partners, designers, architects and engineers to construct their high-quality custom homes. “Together, we maximized our strengths and always pushed to the next level of excellence,” Jon says. “We elevated the teamwork atmosphere and created a honed development process that engages the client.” Their work speaks for itself. With more than 90% of their business generated through personal referrals, Neal and Jon pride themselves in knowing their clients are so happy with their hard work that they want to share it with their friends, family and neighbors.

“To be able to say our home-building process is so successful that people actively talk about it and drive business is a pretty big deal,” Neal says. “It’s a big responsibility. These are people’s dream homes, and most people plan living here for the rest of their lives.” Interested buyers can see SCH Homes up close for themselves at any of their four neighborhoods in the Southlake and Westlake area. Quail Hollow has lush green hills and trees that you can see while driving on the Vaquero Golf Club, while the Stony Brook gated community offers native trees, ponds, a park and a creek. Granada connects the Westlake community through large public spaces and privately maintained trails, and Crescent Heights is just a few minutes away from Southlake Town Square’s shopping and dining scene. home STYLE The Wonder Of Wicker
T
rends always have a way of coming back into style, so it’s no surprise a ’70s favorite is having its moment 50 years later. Wicker adds a bohemian feel to your space, providing a laid back energy and sense of ease. Available in its natural earthy hue or painted with vibrant colors, wicker adds a pop of texture all while adding some functionality. Whether it’s with furniture or home decor, a touch of wicker can do wonders for your home.
BRING ON THE BASKETS
You can never have too much storage, especially pieces that are polished enough to be displayed. One of the hottest wicker trends as of late has to be blanket baskets. These little boho floor vessels provide needed storage into a space and add a dash of fun. With ranging motifs including graphic designs, there’s plenty of variety to find one that matches your interior. Just throw a few of your favorite cozy throws in these baskets and you have a functional new home decor item that’s worth showing off.
TALK ABOUT TRUNKS
Whether it’s by your door to catch your keys or living at the foot of your bed, a good wicker truck can add both style and function into a space. Whether you find a piece in its natural brown or a painted version that matches your home color scheme, this larger storage solution ensures that everything has a place. The best part? Find one with a lid so that it provides a sleek line into your room. It can also store a few loose toys or gadgets for when you are in a rush.
HANGING OUT
Add some pizzazz to your interior by bringing the outdoor material in with a hanging wicker chair. These posh models can add new levels into your space, and they add a fun new seating arrangement that your guests will rave about. Find a design that comes with a soft seating cushion to ensure that you will enjoy your time hanging out. Just imagine putting your feet up, enjoying a glass of wine and taking in a good book. It sounds like an ideal night in to us.
OUTDOOR OASIS
Make a bold change with wicker by updating your outdoor furniture. A sophisticated patio set with matching couches, chairs and an ottoman can elevate your whole backyard. Find pieces that use wicker as its neutral base, and go wild with color by decorating with cushions and pillows. The durable material is made to last the test of time and can hold up to the Texas heat. All that’s needed to complete your picturesque summer hangout spot is some fresh flowers and a pitcher of iced tea.

A New Batter’s Up In Arlington
The Biscuit Bar Brings Comfort Food To Tarrant County
T The Biscuit Bar 1707 N. Collins St. Arlington 817.873.6330 TheBiscuit.bar
66 • JUN 20
here’s a reason they call it comfort food. Rich flavors and filling dishes provide a sense of warmth to diners everywhere. It’s a feeling The Biscuit Bar owners Jake and Janie Burkett know well. And now, Tarrant County residents can enjoy their stacked biscuit sandwiches thanks to The Biscuit Bar’s fourth location in Arlington. In 2016, Jake and Janie welcomed their twin girls, Blake and Brycee Joe into the world. That rush of joy was met with sorrow as Brycee Joe passed unexpectedly after her birth due to a severe infection. Loved ones surrounded the Burketts, trying to provide comfort and support
during tragedy. And while they were constantly around people, food became a larger part of their lives, specifically biscuits. After sharing their biscuit sandwiches with their friends and family, and hosting more events with “biscuit bars” where people could build their own creations, the Burketts found a vision. Fast forward two years (and thousands of bakes) later, the Burketts introduced their concept to the world with their first location in Plano. The Biscuit Bar quickly became a beloved favorite in the Metroplex thanks to its stacked sandwiches, each housed on a homemade, fluffy biscuit.
SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE
LOCALFLAVOR review
“We started with a family recipe (which was really just a basic biscuit recipe), but then Jake did a ton of R&D to tweak the recipe so that the biscuits tasted great, were fluffy and moist, but would also be sturdy enough to hold up as a sandwich,” Janie Burkett says. “He made over 10,000 biscuits to come up with the perfect recipe! Our secret is to use lots of butter and keep the dry ingredients super cold (we keep ours in the freezer).” After creating its foundation, the Burketts were able to play with flavors to ensure there was a sandwich for everyone. “We came up with our sandwich options mostly just by feeding friends and family. We would come up with an idea, then make a round for our family to get their feedback,” Janie says. With savory options like the Hot Hot Chicken, a Nashville-style hot chicken sandwich complete with dill pickles and homemade ranch, and The Philly, a seasoned ribeye sandwich featuring green peppers, onions, melted cheese and sriracha mayo, there’s plenty of spicy options coming out of The Biscuit Bar’s kitchen. But those with a sweet tooth can enjoy sandwiches like the Biscuit French Toast, a biscuit dipped in sweet vanilla custard and pan-fried until golden brown topped with homemade whipped cream. A proper meal is not complete without an order of its Styled Tots. These loaded sides come with an array of toppings, like the Southern Style tots with homemade sausage gravy, cheddar cheese and green onion or the Holiday Style tots with brown sugar, pecan streusel and toasted marshmallows. To push comfort food to the limit, indulge in one of The Biscuit Bar’s sweets, like the biscuit nuggets, deep-fried biscuit bites covered in vanilla, caramel and whipped cream. Pair it with a refreshing cocktail like the Wobbly Arnold, a combination of The Biscuit Bar’s take on a spiked lemonade and its spiked iced tea, and it is safe to say your meal will be a hard one to forget. Or for an adult take on your childhood favorites, try one of its cereal sips, featuring ingredients like Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Puffs. Its newest location in Arlington, located within Champions Park, ensures that locals can take a bite out of these flavors, all while enjoying the area to its fullest. “It is our largest store to date at 3,024 square feet,” Janie says. “It also boasts a two-story patio with perfect views of AT&T stadium and lots of extra TVs for watching sports (that hopefully we all get to watch in the fall).” While there is a lot of new to be excited about, Janie says she hopes to provide guests with an authentic, homey dining experience. “Most people in America (and particularly Texas) grew up having biscuits in some form or fashion,” Janie says. “So I hope they have a sense of familiarity and nostalgia with our staple item, but I also hope they feel wowed and excited by having a biscuit in a way they hadn’t had it before.”

making the most of a night out There’s nothing like a good ol’ fashioned date night. And as we all transition into a new state of normal, many are looking for ways to support all their favorite area restaurants. Hit three in one night by choosing one place for drinks, another for dinner and a last stop for desserts. And thanks to this hot spot in Grapevine, local lovebirds can accomplish this all without moving the car. So just grab the keys and get ready to enjoy a sizzling summer night out.

There’s nothing like sipping on a cold drink while taking in a hot patio. At Grapevine’s Mi Dia From Scratch, all that’s left to decide is how to take your go-to, frozen or on the rocks. The Mexican restaurant boasts a mighty beverage program, with all its margaritas made with fresh ingredients and 100% blue agave tequila. For those looking to jump into the fun, try out the Hell Freezes Over, a combination of housemade green chili Ambhar Plata Tequila, Cointreau, lime, cucumber, basil, agave nectar and dry ice, complete with a hatch chili salt blend rim. Or, for a touch of bubbles, enjoy the Riviera Maya, complete with strawberry-infused Espolon Blanco Tequila, St. Germain Elderflower, Cointreau and prosecco. Those who prefer their tequila straight up can select one of Mi Dia From Scratch’s flights, and mezcal lovers have a flight of their own to enjoy. Whether you just savor drinks or order a delicious starter like guacamole, time just seems to fly while dining at Mi Dia From Scratch. MiDiaFromScratch.com

Upgrade your pizza game by heading over to Fireside Pies, located directly behind Mi Dia From Scratch. The Italian eatery provides a warm, inviting environment, perfect for those who love to share while eating out. Start out on a luxurious note with the burrata mozzarella crostini, accented with Texas cherry tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil, aged balsamic and sea salt. But be sure to leave enough room for the real stars of the show. The Hot ’N Crumbled, topped with spicy Italian sausage, garlic ricotta and diced tomatoes, provides a hefty bite while the Medi, topped with truffle porcini cream, goat cheese, arugula, red peppers, red onions, kalamata olives and shaved parmesan proves a veggie pie can hold up to its meat-covered counterparts. Glutenfree diners can also enjoy a pizza thanks to its Smart Flour Foods crust option, proving that everyone can find something to savor. FiresidePies.com

Make the most out of your night by enjoying the best of the area and swinging by Winewood Grill for dessert. The Grapevine restaurant not only features plenty of savory specialties like Chilean sea bass and smothered barbecue ribs but also serves a selection of indulgent sweets. For a sophisticated take on a favorite, try the brookie. Complete with ice cream and chocolate and caramel sauces, this baked treat acts as a well-rounded way to finish off the night. Chocolate fanatics can enjoy a layered cake, while those with a higher tolerance for tart treats can enjoy a slice of its key lime pie. Whether you enjoy your dessert with another round of drinks or take it to go to relish in the comfort of your own home, there’s not a wrong way to enjoy Winewood. TheWinewood.com

New Juice On The Block
CV Local Juicery Creates Bold Flavors With Healthy Ingredients After sheltering in place and enjoying plenty of starchy foods (as well as some sugary baked goods), many are looking at ways to get back on track and eat healthier. Colleyville’s CV Local Juicery makes that mission a little bit easier. The family-owned juice bar opened late last year, bringing organic, clean products to its community. Colleyville residents and owners Santiago and Kylie Ramirez were inspired to open CV Local Juicery after surveying the area and looking for healthy options. “I started juicing to coincide with my physical activities and to lead a healthier lifestyle,” Santiago says. “My father passed away from cancer, and, during his battle, he started reading how a healthier diet could have prevented and could help improve his condition. He turned a three month sentence into a hard fought five year battle because he changed the way he ate. My wife pushed me and inspired me because she believed in what I was doing.” CV Local Juicery offers quality juices, wellness shots, bowls, smoothies and grab-and-go snacks. With coldpressed juice combinations ranging from S1 Blue Lightning — cayenne, red apple, ginger lemon, green apple, cucumber and blue spirulina — to R2 Pura Vida — red beats, carrot, grapefruit, ginger, turmeric, lemon and red apple — there’s sure to be a bottle that will satisfy your personal preferences. Those looking for familiar flavors will love the Awake smoothie, made with frozen blueberries, frozen blackberries, pomegranate juice, banana, açaí puree and coconut yogurt. The PB&J Protein, a combination of frozen strawberries, peanut butter, banana, almond mylk, plant protein and ice, also provides a sense of comfort with healthy ingredients. Combined with one of its superfood snacks, like its protein balls made with coconut oil, mixed berries, gluten-free oats, coconut flour, shredded coconut, agave nectar and pink Himalayan salt, and guests can feel empowered to take on the rest of their day. CV Local Juicery also provides one- or three- day juice cleanses, perfect for resetting your body and filling it with nutrients. Whether this is your first time trying a cleanse or you have experience, there’s a regime that’s ready to help you. With plenty of superfoods available thanks to this local business, it’s never been easier to eat well.

Connecting During Unprecedented Times
I
t’s odd waking up with nowhere to be, no traffic to beat. Laptop screens replaced our favorite teachers. We wear masks and gloves to shop, and we check in with our grandparents every night because they are most vulnerable. That is our new reality. The novel coronavirus has impacted our lives in unprecedented ways, and for me, it has been rather difficult to adjust. During times like these, though, I believe the best way to maintain a sense of normalcy is to branch out in innovative ways to help your community, whether it be writing thank you letters to those on the front lines, donating to hunger relief or, for me, starting a grocery delivery service for seniors, the immunocompromised and others in need. With the help of eight amazing friends, we’ve been able to fulfill orders all over Southlake. The first few deliveries weren’t without some trial and error, though. As teens with relatively limited life experience, we’ve learned: ●T he minimum age to shop at Costco is 18 (and the manager will enforce the rule!). ● Driving with gloves makes for rather sweaty palms. ● It's hard to take group photos when everyone has to stand 6 feet apart, and no one’s smiles are seen past the masks. We’ve mastered the art of the smize, though. ● Toilet paper is the hottest commodity on the market. ● The white side of the mask is the side that goes
against your face. This was a topic of a rather heated debate on our first delivery. ● S ome customers are quite picky, and you can turn the whole store upside down and not find the specific brand they asked for. ● Venmo can actually be pretty difficult to figure out, especially if you don’t have much technology experience. ● Being careful and organized when loading groceries into your trunk helps with shifting. Even with countless memories made and new experiences every time, the highlight of this project has been the interactions I’ve had with the people we’ve delivered to. From grandmas to cancer patients to parents of former Carroll ISD students, talking to them and learning their individual stories has been interesting and unforgettable. One of our delivery requests was from an amazing woman living alone who had recently gone through chemotherapy treatments. While we dropped her items off on her doorstep, she shared life advice and anecdotes (while standing 6 feet apart, of course). Another one of my friends has had the chance to help out a former baseball coach. My friends and I believe that the best part of volunteering is getting a chance to connect with the community on a unique, personal level. A close second, though, is getting to leave the house and see friends while still being productive and safe. This year isn’t going the way anyone could have imagined, but I’m so grateful for the opportunity to help, and perhaps we will inspire others to do so as well. Stay safe, and take care.

SOUTHLAKE’S DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT DISCUSSES HELPING BUSINESSES THROUGH THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC
W
orking for the city of Southlake since 2008, Daniel Cortez is all business. As the deputy director of economic development, Daniel works with a wide range of employers to help them succeed. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which dramatically affected local businesses, Daniel's job is more important now than ever.
I STARTED WITH… the city of Southlake as a city planner in October of 2008, then worked shortly in the city manager’s office in 2015 and 2016. I worked in economic development starting in January 2017. In what was supposed to be a short-term job until I found a larger city to work at, it’s now been almost 12 incredible years in a community I didn’t realize I would come to love so much. ON A NORMAL DAY... my primary role is to work directly with businesses as their local government resource. Businesses, as you can imagine, are busy doing what they do best and often don’t have the staff or the time to explore what resources are out there for them. My job is to find ways for us as a city to help businesses succeed and to connect them with other businesses in the community that can help them. I LIKE CONNECTING WITH PEOPLE… not only in a business capacity but also personally. This job allows me to work with all 2,000+ businesses we have in Southlake and get to know them for more than just the service and product they offer. ALL THE BUSINESSES IN SOUTHLAKE… are owned or operated by someone who is involved in some capacity in the community. Connecting those dots and working with these people to help them succeed is rewarding. It’s extremely rewarding to learn a new business owner decides to locate in Southlake, help them find where to best locate and who to get connected with, and six months later see how well they’re doing. A BIG PART OF THE JOB… is to make sure the city’s strategy with the business community moves forward. The city council has prioritized that supporting our existing business community should be at the forefront of our economic development efforts. The business visits we make and our annual business climate survey

are a couple of ways we make sure we know what our businesses are experiencing and how we get ideas on how to improve our business environment. WITH COVID-19, EACH DAY… has been different and as federal legislation and financial assistance change from day-to-day, I need to get educated and get the information out to our local businesses. We’re working on a new website currently and one of the tools we’ll help launch with it is our new Facebook account, Select Southlake. This new website will really allow us to better help our business community and really spotlight our great businesses and partners we have. MANY BUSINESSES I’VE SPOKEN WITH… weren’t initially ready or set to conduct business through social distancing. I’m happy to say as time has gone on, most have adapted and are finding new and innovative ways to get their services and products out to their customers. Many businesses have needed financial assistance so they can continue operating in some capacity. We’ve outlined financial resources businesses can take advantage of to help them out. THE MOST DIFFICULT PART OF MY JOB… is having to speak with a business owner who has laid off or furloughed his [or her] employees and may not stay in business through the crisis. It pains me personally because as I’ve gotten to know these business owners, and I’ve also met their employees and staff. Many of our businesses are like small families within Southlake. I’D ADVISE OUR RESIDENTS… to not forget about some of our less-known dining locations. We have a full listing that shows all of our food establishments. Our retail locations need a lot of help too. Consider buying a gift card now knowing that you’ll be going into the store later this summer.

Relive Your Favorite Movie Moments
These Filming Locations Made The Scene
S
ome say the movies could never happen in real life, but the cameras needed to film somewhere. After all, the Philadelphia Museum of Art was already there when Sylvester Stallone ran up the steps in “Rocky,” and the hills were already alive in the German Alps when Julie Andrews sang the opening to “The Sound of Music.” If you want to relive some of your favorite scenes in cinematic history up close, these landmarks are home to some of your favorite movie moments.

buildings and views of Biblical proportions. That’s one reason why it's a popular shooting location for religious epics such as “Jesus of Nazareth,” “The Last Temptation of Christ” and “Son of God,” as well as historical epics including “Gladiator,” “Kundun” and “Kingdom of Heaven.” Fantasy also came to its earthen buildings with the likes of the 1999 film “The Mummy” and the 2010 film “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.” Other tooth-and-nail thrillers such as 007’s “The Living Daylights,” “Babel” and “Hanna” were also filmed on the sandy streets, and if you hear a cello playing, you might want to run because the village was also a popular shooting site for the city of Yunkai in HBO’s “Game of Thrones.” TourismAitBenhaddou.com

Prague, The Czech Republic
With 9th century buildings and castles lined up alongside the 260-mile-long Vltava River, Prague is one of the most scenic film sites in the Czech Republic. The historic Estates Theatre captured Mozart’s moving operas in “Amadeus.” You’ll find Tom Cruise escaping the Liechtenstein Palace during his team’s botched operation in the opening to “Mission: Impossible,” then again in his breakout from the Mlada Boleslav Prison in “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol.” Ethan Hunt isn’t the only spy to film a fight scene in Prague, as both Jason Bourne and James Bond filmed parts of “The Bourne Identity” and “Casino Royale” in the Petschek Palace and the Danube House. If the Tisa Rocks seem familiar, that’s because the faun Mr. Tumnus led Lucy through them to his home in “The Chronicles of Narnia.” Even Spider-Man swung into town to shoot a scene on the Charles Bridge in “Spider-Man: Far From Home.” PragueGo.com
Glencoe, Scotland
If you can hear William Wallace screaming freedom by the hills and countryside of Glencoe, Scotland, that’s probably because you saw it before in Mel Gibson’s Oscar-winning epic “Braveheart.” Or perhaps it was the time when he stepped into the court of Dunnottar Castle to play “Hamlet?” Maybe you would remember it better from when Arthur, King of the Britons, galloped through the meadows in “Monty Python and the Holy Grail?” Chances are you’ve seen Glencoe before, no matter what you watch. You’ll notice it in the opening credits of every “Outlander” episode, or on the Jacobite steam train from the Harry Potter series or in the Rosslyn Chapel in “The Da Vinci Code.” Even James Bond’s family home can be found in the valleys of “Skyfall.” DiscoverGlencoe.com
Wadi Rum, Jordan
If a film needs dusty sandstorms and desolate canyons, Jordan is filled with miles of bleak landscapes perfect for any wide shot. Peter O’Toole experienced the cliffs up close in the 1962 epic “Lawrence of Arabia,” and since then, the desert has become a popular filming spot for several blockbuster movies. Walt Disney Studios film 1n the desert frequently with projects ranging from “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” and “Rogue One” to the 2019 “Aladdin” remake. Other science fiction filmmakers such as Ridley Scott used the rocky formations along the valley to portray different planets in “Prometheus” and “The Martian.” Directors like Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay also traveled to the village to shoot their blockbuster sequels, “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” and “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.” More recently, Denis Villeneuve filmed the adaptation to Frank Herbert’s “Dune,” which is set for release in December 2020.
