We at Southlake Style may not have taken an official oath of office, but each day I’m proud to say we’re here to share the positive vibes that make living in North Texas something special. Not long ago, I attended the swearing-in ceremony of three Southlake City Councilmen. I found myself becoming re-energized as they each took an oath in front of their families and those collected in the chambers. They pledged to do what’s right for our friends, our neighbors and the entire city. It is a volunteer position that holds many responsibilities, yet brings absolutely no pay. I give them my utmost respect. However, my sentiments won’t pay their mortgages. This month we have the fortune of sharing an interview with two-term Southlake City Councilman Dr. Shahid Shafi. If you’re like me, you’ll be inspired by his life’s story and how far he’s come both personally and professionally after moving from Pakistan. In Ashley Madonna’s “A Living Example,” Councilman Shafi tells us of the similarities seen in the oaths he’s taken as both a physician and an elected official. Whether for his patients or his fellow Southlake neighbors, Shafi feels, “It’s always about doing what’s in the best interest of the people.” After years of interviews like Shafi’s, I’m still regularly in awe of how many concerned and engaged neighbors we have who make what’s in the best interest of others their personal mission.

Summer ease — makes me feel fine. Especially at the new house! You should see the cookouts and parties that have already happened by that pool. Hot gossip. Cold drinks. Frankly, I’ve got it made in the shade: I can see the pool, the patio, the pergola, the spinning fans and the people. Funny friends. Wild relatives. New neighbors galore. My humans are crazy about the new place — and that agent from Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty somehow knew they would be. (And, buying it? A breeze.) So much fun. So much frolicking. So much laughter. It just tickles my ribs.

LION KING | IN THEATERS | JULY 19 The Circle of Movie Remakes Sure, “Endgame” premiered and “Game of Thrones” ended, but 2019 will likely be known as the year “Lion King” came back to life. Marketed as a live action remake of a 1994 classic, “Lion King” is sure to be a hit with audiences of all ages. The plot stays the same as Simba (voiced by Donald Glover) struggles with his identity after suffering the loss of his father. While in exile, he meets an odd pair of new friends in Timon (voiced by Billy Eichner) and Pumbaa (voiced by Seth Rogan). You’ll pick up right where you left off in the ’90s, singing “Hakuna Matata” at the top of your lungs. With the voices of Beyonce, James Earl Jones, Eric Andre, KeeganMicheal Key and so many more rounding out this star-studded cast, “Lion King” is not a film you want to miss this summer.

BRING THE FUNNY | NBC | JULY 9 Combining Comedy with Competition With seemingly every talent having its own TV competition series, it’s about time that comedians battle it out on stage. “Bring The Funny,” premiering this month on NBC, will allow them to do just that. Featuring Kenan Thompson, Chrissy Teigen and Jeff Foxworthy as judges, the show is destined to be hilarious, no matter how the contestants do. Speaking of contestants, the best of the best stand-ups, sketch troupes and comedic variety acts will have a chance at the $250,000 prize package. Audiences can expect anything from funny magicians to puppeteers in the show’s search for the next great comedic act.

ask An. . EASTERN MEDICINE CHANGED DR. KALPESH PATEL'S LIFE. NOW HE HOPES TO HELP OTHERS THROUGH HIS PRACTICE.

WHEN DID YOU OPEN YOUR CLINIC? We opened On Point Acupuncture & Wellness’ current location in June 2017. But I actually opened in Southlake about 10 months prior to that. It was in a smaller place, so this office is definitely an upgrade.

...ACUPUNCTURIST

Dr. Kalpesh Patel WHAT IS A MISCONCEPTION ABOUT ACUPUNCTURE? That it is painful, and it’s only good for pain. Acupuncture can help heal those chronic issues – whether it’s pain or swelling – but it can also address sleep issues, digestive issues, headaches and much more all at the same time. It’s really relaxing instead of being painful.

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN ACUPUNCTURE? I did a lot of heavy lifting when I was younger – I was a part of the football program in high school – so that brought a lot of wear and tear on my joints. By the time I was 22, I had seen several different doctors, but none could really help. Then I came across a friend who was a gymnast, and he said to go try acupuncture because it helped with his biscep tendonitis. I was all for a more natural approach, and I am forever grateful for how it helped me.

WHY SHOULD PEOPLE GIVE ACUPUNCTURE A TRY? My experience with Western medicine and traditional care was that it was only symptom based or crisis management. I was amazed with how well acupuncture worked and the fact that it was all natural. It is a holistic approach to healthcare, which is what I really love.

16 • JUL 19

WHAT’S SOMETHING YOU WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT ACUPUNCTURE? In my opinion, this is an amazing solution for the opioid crisis. It gives natural pain relief because it has such a potent effect.

WHAT IS A POPULAR SERVICE PEOPLE ARE DRAWN TO RIGHT NOW? Facial cupping has been a major hit. It’s not the same type of cupping that people experience with body cupping. With this type of cupping, the cups are constantly being moved so there is no bruising. And the cups are completely different, so they are very gentle on the face. You can glide them and promote blood flow while also bringing oxygen to the skin. It’s like getting a massage on your face. I have fallen asleep every time I have gotten it.

SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

A

s the first Southlake City Councilmember of South Asian descent, Dr. Shahid Shafi made local history when he took office in 2014. Over his tenure, the surgeon and CEO of his practice has experienced both triumphs and challenges. It wasn’t easy getting to where he is today, but Shafi believes his story isn’t special. It’s a reflection of what’s possible.

Growing Up In Pakistan

Shafi was born in India and raised in Pakistan along with his elder brother and sister. His parents suffered religious persecution after the Partition of India in 1947 – to the point that they eventually had to move from India to Pakistan despite living there in harmony for many years. That hardship continued throughout his childhood. “I came of age under a brutal military dictatorship where the press was censored, the police was an instrument of torture and the courts were corrupt – typical Third World dictatorship,” Shafi explains. With a strong will to succeed, Shafi set his mind to the future. He knew from middle school that he wanted to follow in his parents' footsteps. “Both my parents were physicians – the old fashioned general practitioners that used to make house visits with their little black bag,” Shafi says. “They had their own challenging lives. She delivered babies in peoples’ homes. Sometimes she got paid in kind with a goat, a chicken or a bag of rice.” The two doctors met in medical school, and despite their religious differences – his father was a Sunni Muslim and his mother was Shiite, they fell in love and got married. “Somehow their love was able to bridge all those differences, and they raised us in a very loving family,” Shafi says. SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

In the 1950s, it was uncommon to find a young woman studying medicine, but Shafi’s mother persevered through her circumstances. “My mom herself was a pioneering woman,” Shafi says. “She used to tell me that she used to study under street lights because she didn’t have power at home.”

Moving To America

After getting a medical education in Pakistan, Shafi moved to America to continue studying. He didn’t have much, but he knew that with time and determination, he could get a taste of the American dream. “Actually, my net worth was negative when I got here,” he recalls. “I had to borrow some money to come to the U.S. In that first year of life, there were days where I didn't have enough money to eat. From that low point, I was able to find the opportunities to succeed thanks to the generosity of many good people.” Shafi enrolled in graduate courses at Johns Hopkins University, where he eventually met his wife, Avesha. She was pursuing a Master’s Degree in health administration, and the two connected thanks to a shared statistics class. “I was good at it and she needed some help, so there I was helping her out,” Shafi laughs. After they both obtained their respective degrees, Shafi went on to the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, the University of Pennsylvania and eventually Southern Methodist University. “My wife thinks I am a perpetual student, but I love education and learning,” Shafi says.

Finding Southlake

His education kept them moving, so Shafi and Avesha were excited to find a place they could form roots. They moved to Texas in 2003 as Shafi started working as a trauma surgeon at Parkland Hospital in Dallas. After a JUL 19 • 19

year in the area, they found a home in Southlake and started to become a part of the community. “When someone asks us where we are from, my immediate response is, ‘Oh, we are from Southlake.’ What brought us here was No. 1 the schools and No. 2 Southlake Town Square,’” Shafi says. “But we also love that sense of community and that sense of belonging. “For both of us, this has been the longest we have lived in one city ever in our lives,” Shafi says. After becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2009, Shafi started volunteering. He got involved with the Southlake Lions Club, Southlake’s Planning and Zoning Committee, Leadership Southlake and the Citizens Academy through the Department of Public Safety. “Once I became a citizen, I had the opportunity to start to give back to the city and community that had given us so much,” Shafi says. “We have made friends here who are as close to us as family. Southlake has become our home.” Those endeavors led him to throw his hat in the ring in the 2011 city council race. While he lost that first run, Shafi was not discouraged. Rather, he tried again the next term and ended up with the win. “When I didn’t win the election the first time, it was a disappointment, but as an immigrant, I have faced worse challenges,” Shafi says. “On election night in 2014, my victory speech consisted of three words only: Only in America.” During his two elected terms, Shafi has focused on three areas: public safety, infrastructure and lowering property taxes. But he also believes in giving a voice to those who do not have one. “I meet with any citizen who wants to meet with me regardless of what issue it is. I try to educate them on how the city government works, what the process is because a lot of them don’t know that process,” Shafi says. And he has shown that time and time again by sitting down with those interested and talking to them about their concerns. “He’s always been there to listen to our concerns and what directly affects us,” local citizen Doug Harsy says. “He’s willing to listen to all viewpoints and review all the developments, which has played a really important role in ensuring Southlake is a great place to live. He’s just a great advocate.” Southlake’s Community Engagement Committee chairwoman Sherry Berman reached out to him when he announced he was running for city council, and Shafi agreed to meet her and explain his thought process for local government. “He is intensely knowledgeable about his subjects,” Berman says. “I think he pays more particular attention to things that you may not pay attention to.”

One change Shafi is particularly proud of is the improvements made to the city’s safety. By investing in the recruiting processes, upgrading the police officers and firefighters equipment and updating hardware and software technologies, the current city council has shown they care about the city’s public security and productivity. “It's the little things that people don’t see up front but really has an impact on the efficiency of our officers,” Shafi says. Shafi also has brought his medical background into the elected role. When the Ebola crisis scare swept through Dallas back in 2015, Shafi, being the only physician in the Southlake government, worked with local public safety officers to ensure they had the proper training and equipment. But that is not the only thing Shafi says being a doctor does for his city council duties. “I feel like as a physician, I am particularly prepared for public offices. I took an oath a long time ago to only do what was in the best interest of my patients,” Shafi says. “It’s always about doing what’s in the best interest of the people. The challenges are different, but it’s a similar approach.” And his constituents have taken notice, like local citizen Kush Rao. “Usually back home in India and back in Pakistan, you don’t see a doctor involved in politics. Even in the U.S. you don’t see a doctor involved with politics, but I actually believe that well-educated people should get into politics,” Rao says. “And he encourages others to get into mainstream politics.” Shafi believes his immigrant status has also shaped how he operates on the city council. “One of the unique perspectives that I have as an immigrant is that you have a true appreciation for the things that you have here. I am very careful to not start taking them for granted,” Shafi says. “Just the idea that I can turn that tap out, and water will come from it. And not only water but water I can just pour in a cup and drink it without getting sick. That is a privilege that most of the world does not have.”

Balancing It All

On top of his city’s duties, Shafi was named CEO of the Surgical Group of North Texas three years ago. With a demanding job and a load of responsibilities, you might think Shafi would feel stretched. But he says that meeting with people and learning about their experiences re-energizes him. “That’s one of the joys of public service,” Shafi says. “I tell people that you can find time for whatever it is you are passionate about.” Shafi also credits his wife and three children for being supportive of his interests. him while he is out and meeting people around town. Shafi says he goes out of his way to ensure he’s not just spending time with people in his own circles; he wants to show support for Southlake’s diverse set of communities. “He is completely all about doing what’s right for the city of Southlake,” Berman says. Over Easter weekend, Shafi attended two different church services, one each day, as well as a seder dinner with a local Jewish family to promote inclusiveness. “I took a conscious effort to step out of my comfort zone because I believe that is my responsibility as an elected official and a community leader to build those kinds of bridges,” Shafi says. He firmly believes that actions like this will help Southlake continue to break down barriers and strengthen bonds within the community. “We do that sometimes literally by creating opportunities for people, and we do it figuratively by being role models,” Shafi says. Shafi believes if citizens see elected officials making steps in the right direction, they will follow in suit. Those steps toward each other make locals feel like they have a stake in their city and a responsibility to respect one another “In my opinion, [Shafi] has a view of what Southlake has always supposed to have been,” Harsy says. “If a community has that sense of belonging, then they will do anything to love each other, protect each other and to be good neighbors,” Shafi says. Living Example Of The American Dream “When I sit back and look at my life’s journey, it is truly one of the American dream fulfilled,” Shafi says. Shafi has experienced adversity as a public official, but he doesn’t let that stand in his way or slow him 22 • JUL 19

down. And he speaks fondly of what America’s founding fathers had in mind when they were creating a more perfect union. “I'm not naïve. Our country has a terrible history of bigotry, racism and all kinds of discrimination against women, against you name it,” Shafi says. “But we have overcome a lot of those kinds of divisions.” He just lets his work and his citizens’ votes speak to what is possible. “I am a living example of that. Many people did not think it was possible for someone of Muslim faith to win an election. My election proved them wrong,” Shafi says. “I believe that in America, it doesn’t matter where you come from. It matters where you are going. The American dream is alive and well. Shafi hopes to not only be an example of the American dream but also be an example for others in the area, in the country, that they can achieve their dreams despite their background and circumstances. “Really there is nothing special about me,” Shafi says. “If I can do it, then I hope that someone else will see that and say that they can do it too.” While he says his family will be happy to have him around a little bit more after his term ends next year, Shafi believes he will continue to give back to the community and country that has given him so much – whether that will be in another elected role or volunteer capacity is still to be determined. What is sure is Shafi has left an impact on Southlake not only because of his background but also because of the care and compassion he brings to his responsibilities. It’s what makes him a living example for what’s possible. SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

Defending Champs Southlake Baseball Defends 6A State Title

I

t’s official: Southlake Baseball is victorious once more. The Dragons took on Fort Bend Ridge Point on June 8 during the state championship and set new UIL state tournament records for most runs in a game and most runs in a single inning. Their effort was obvious with the final score of 17-0. While this is a back-to-back victory, most baseball fans did not expect this from this year’s team. Last year’s state roster included more than 20 seniors, many of which have gone on to compete in collegiate play. But the team regrouped and proved they, too, could be competitive on the run to state. This was their 21st consecutive postseason tournament play. “We are the typical Carroll team that is going to put pressure on the defense by running the bases and manipulating the barrel,” head coach Larry Vucan says. Before heading to state, the team competed locally at one of the Metroplex’s biggest fields: Texas Rangers’ Globe Life Park. Locals came out to the ballpark to cheer on the Dragons and see them, once again, claim victory.

For The Win SCLA Lady Dragon High School Lacrosse Team Wins State Championship

T

he Southlake Carroll Lacrosse Association (“SCLA”) Lady Dragon High School Lacrosse Team reached new heights this season when they walked away from the Texas Girls High School State Championship as victors. This is only the second time the team has gone to state in program history and the first time they have walked away with the win. Under the guidance and direction of head coach Morgan McDonald and assistant coach Stephanie Schenkel, the team achieved the highest winning record on record for the team. They went 20-4-2 overall and 14-4-2 in Texas Girls High School League play. “I am most proud of our team’s resiliency, as we continued to work hard even after tough losses,” senior team captain Lauren Risenhoover says. “During the season, we actually lost to the team that we ended up beating to win the State Championship. The SCLA Lady Dragons were seeded third at the state tournament, but with heart and determination, they made it to the championship game to face off with Frisco Fury Lady Lacrosse. The game concluded with sudden death overtime, but the Lady Dragons came out on top. “I was honestly in disbelief,” senior Olivia Webb says. “I was so proud of everyone and how hard we worked, but due to the nail biting game I wasn’t sure if we would pull through until the last minute.” This also resulted in the SCLA team’s No. 1 rank in the state and makes them a team to keep your eye on for the 2019-2020 season. While the team is graduating four talented seniors, the young team will keep a large amount of their underclassmen.

DFW ACTION FIGURE SHOW BRINGS IN G.I. JOE DESIGNER Real American heroes and villains collided June 8-9 at the Grapevine Convention Center, and they were joined by the man who helped design them. The eighth annual DFW G.I. Joe & Action Figure Show featured contests for custom variants of dioramas, vehicles and action figures, swap meets and over 35 confirmed dealers who showed off their own figures and custom variants. But the dealers were not the only celebrities in attendance. Figure designer Ron Rudat, who worked with the Hasbro company during production of its G.I. Joe toy line throughout the 1970s, was a special guest for the show and signed autographs for show attendants. Rudat helped design several of the most popular characters from the G.I. Joe adventure team toy line, including Firefly, Baroness, Destro, Scarlett and Snake Eyes. He was also responsible for designing Cobra, the terrorist organization that becomes Joe’s sworn enemies. Approximately 700 Joes attended the show, and co-founder Greg Brown even mused the possibility of moving to a larger venue in the near future.

GRAPEVINE BAKERY OWNER TAKES ON ‘WINNER CAKE ALL’ A familiar face took on Food Network’s “Winner Cake All” in May. Megan Routree, pastry chef and owner of the Grapevine bakery Legacy Cakes, won the new competition series’ 11th episode. In “Winner Cakes All,” four bakers battle to create the best themed displays based on current industry trends and designs. And Megan proved she had what it takes to walk away with the grand prize of $10,000. But this was not Megan’s first rodeo. She also competed on TLC’s “Next Great Baker” back in 2010 where she placed first runner up. But during this televised Food Network showcase, Megan took home the grand prize thanks to her creativity and execution. During the first half of the episode, Megan and her baking assistant created a fun gender revel cake topper. Then, they took the show to the next level by creating a six-tier glamorous baby shower cake. The final product featured palm trees, the Los Angeles skyline, a beach ball and a teddy bear in a golden pool float. Even with two different shows under her belt, Megan says that she would be interested in getting back out there and competing on another televised challenge. The episode originally premiered on May 20 on Food Network, but if you missed it, it’s still available for viewing on Hulu.

TEXAS LIVE! OPENS $1 MILLION BOWLING EXPERIENCE IN SPORTS & SOCIAL Texas Live! launched its $1 million expansion to the Sports & Social venue at the beginning of last month by opening a bowling alley and special event space on its second floor. The 5,000-square-foot expansion included two boutique bowling lanes, two private dining rooms in the back and VIP seating on the patio that overlooks the future Globe Life Field and the Texas Live! Plaza. Texas Rangers first baseman Ronald Guzman and right fielder Nomar Mazara made special appearances as they did the first roll down the new lanes. The opening coincided with the grand opening of the Texas Rangers 7,000 yard golf course.

CENTRAL MARKET CELEBRATES THE TOMATO DURING FESTIVE EVENT Central Market took the time to recognize one of the most juicy summer fruits during an in-store event last month. And for those who wanted to get their hands dirty, the Southlake Central Market offered an engaging cooking class to teach participants how to properly work with the produce.

But this is the first time business partners Lan Trinh and Thu Pham have ventured out on their own. The restaurant will still feature customer favorites like pho beef noodle soup, traditional egg rolls and boba tea drinks, but it will act as a condensed version of the original location's menu. Lan and Thu both live in the area, Southlake and Colleyville respectively, so the new location is closer to home.

SOUTHLAKE’S EMERALD BELLES DRILL TEAM EARNS NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT BY MALEESA SMITH Photos by BluDoor Studios

SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

T

heir sequined hats typically shimmer under stadium lights on fall Friday nights. This year, however, the Emerald Belles of Southlake Carroll were illuminated by stage lights on “America’s Got Talent.” With director Melissa Page at the helm for over 20 years, the high school drill team is always looking to take things to the next level. And this year, the Emerald Belles did just that, auditioning and moving to the next round on NBC’s hit talent competition. “I couldn't quit smiling,” Emerald Belles director Melissa Page says. “I truly was so excited because they are such a special group to me.” The episode featuring their audition aired on June 4, and clips of the Belles’ high kick routine spread like wildfire on social media platforms. While we have yet to see what happens with the team during the next round, the accomplishment of bringing judge Simon Cowell to his feet is enough to instill a sense of Southlake pride. SCOUTING SOUTHLAKE The process of getting to that stage is a story in itself. In 2017, a video of the Emerald Belles’ 2017 high kick routine went fairly viral. Now, with the video boasting over 3 million views, it’s safe to say that people well outside of the Metroplex have seen the Southlake drill team perform. As fate would have it, a casting producer from “America’s Got Talent” stumbled across the video. Seeing their potential for the big stage, he reached out to Melissa. “At first I was like, 'Is this legit?'” she recalls. “So I looked him up and thought, ‘Oh my gosh, this is for real.’” After participating in many conference calls and sending more videos of her team to the show’s crew, Melissa finally received the good news: They were headed to California. She announced it the team last May. “We were shocked and so excited,” Emerald Belles captain Molly McKinnon recalls. Here’s the thing about the Emerald Belles team: It’s huge. With 78 team members and 16 chaperones, there were a lot of moving parts to get to Los Angeles. Regardless, “America’s Got Talent” flew the team to California. “It was interesting because when they first called me, they didn't realize exactly what we were,” Melissa recalls. “I had to explain that we were a public high school drill team and that we weren't a dance company. People don't really know what a drill team is unless you live in Texas.” HITTING THE BIG STAGE A flurry of activity is probably the best way to describe audition day. Between certain Belles getting pulled aside for interviews, others warming up and a variety of other auditioning acts preparing all around them, it was a long day. “I was so impressed with my kids because they were taking them all for interviews left and right, and they were so poised,” Melissa says of the team. “And my captain [Molly] was just phenomenal. She had a lot of pressure on her to speak in front of the cameras and on stage, and she just handled it with such grace.” By 3 p.m., the Pasadena Civic Auditorium was packed and the audience anxiously awaited the judges’ arrival. Now in its 14th season, “America’s Got Talent” has two new judges, actress Gabrielle Union and dancer Julianne Hough, as well as a new host, actor Terry Crews. The judging panel is rounded out by longstanding television personalities Simon Cowell and Howie Mandel. The new judges garnered particular excitement from the Belles, as Gabrielle starred in the teen classic cheerleading movie “Bring It On,” and Julianne is a two-time professional champion of ABC's “Dancing with the Stars.”

“I’ve always viewed Julianne as a role model,” Molly says. Melissa laughs as she recalls some of the Belles’ excitement upon running into Julianne in the ladies’ room. Of course, amidst the excitement, there were definitely nerves. When asked what she said to the team before their performance, Melissa admits she doesn’t remember. “I was so nervous too,” she says. “I was nervous and trying to act like I wasn’t nervous.” And for Molly, the biggest hurdle before her wasn’t a split jump or high kick. “I was honestly more nervous about talking to the judges than performing,” Molly says. “We practice and perform so much that I knew we could do it.” As team captain, it came down to Molly to introduce the team to the judges. As she did, Simon inquired, “Do you really think you can win?” Appearing unphased by the bold question, Molly replied, “I think we for sure got what it takes.” From there, it was perhaps the fastest one minute and 45 seconds of the Belles’ lives. Melissa stood backstage with Terry, watching her girls make highkicking look effortless. “Terry was so funny,” Melissa says. “He was like 'Oh my gosh, your girls are so good!' When they first started kicking, he was stunned. He was the nicest guy ever.” Only a small portion of the team started out on stage, with more emerging from the audience and both wings of the stage. As they came together as a unit, their high-kick routine came to life, with its perfect timing and seamless connections to the next element. As all team members leaped into the air and landed in a perfect split to end their audition, Simon rose out of his chair with a standing ovation. “If you would have asked me if something like that would ever happen I would have said, 'No way,'” Melissa says. “The only thing going through my mind was excitement. I felt like a proud mom. It was so fun for me to see them so happy.” Rising from their splits, the Belles stood and awaited the judges’ responses. It didn’t start well, as Howie kicked things off with a “no” vote, stating that their talent level did not measure up to the Rockettes. "I just tried to not let anything show on my face,” Melissa says of hearing Howie’s comments. “We are not the Rockettes. We're a high school drill team. We're not trying to compare to the Rockettes. They are their own professional, wonderful group. These are 14-18-year-olds.” The negative feedback didn’t last long, as Simon jumped to their defense and Julianne and Gabrielle only had good things to say about the performance. “You were cohesively and collectively beautiful,” Julianne told the Belles during the episode. Upon receiving the three yes votes, the team jumped, screamed and cried. “You always see people crying on TV after they make it through and think that they are overreacting,” Molly says. “But when you’re really there, and you think about all of the work it took to get there, there’s a lot of emotion.”

36 • JUL 19

SETTING THE BAR HIGH Regardless of how the next round of “America’s Got Talent” plays out for the Belles, they have certainly set a high standard, not only for themselves but also for high school drill teams. With football season around the corner, it will be interesting to see the team hit the field once again. “I've been at Carroll for 22 years now, and every year I have a great group,” Melissa says. “The kids are always wonderful – that's why I keep doing it. But this group has just been so special to me. I just don't know what I would have done without them this year. They're wonderful kids and so kindhearted. There's not a better group for this to happen to.” The televised team features 32 recently graduated seniors. It will be up to their younger teammates to continue their constant pursuit of excellence. “This whole experience has been so special for all of us seniors,” Molly says. “For this to be what we leave on is incredible.” Back in Southlake, Sewell Cadillac, one of the team’s sponsors, hosted a watch party when the Belles’ audition aired. “I think we had over 200 hundred people at the watch party,” Melissa says. “It was a blast and, of course, there was a lot of screaming going on.” With plans to include the community once again this month, Melissa praises the residents of Southlake for their support of the team. And while being nationally televised every year is certainly not an attainable goal, Melissa still intends to take things up a notch “We're going to do big things,” she says. “I'm working on it. I'm trying to get us to do something a little different and do something with the team that I've never done before.” In the meantime, the current team is just taking it in and enjoying their time in the spotlight. “It’s just such an honor to be captain of this team,” Molly says. “It’s such a great group and we’ve been having so much fun through this experience.”

DOCS Michael L. Nguyen, M.D. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR PARTICULAR SPECIALTY? I grew up playing high-level sports here in North Texas, and I eventually needed orthopedic surgeries because of injuries I sustained. I remember feeling a large debt of gratitude towards the doctors who put me back together, so I thought it would be rewarding to be able to do the same for others. ARE THERE ANY NEW PROCEDURES THAT YOU OFFER? The vast majority of surgeries I perform can be done minimally invasive, with incisions the same length as the width of your pinky finger. We use advanced surgical techniques to allow us to get the job done with minimal tissue injury. This results in faster healing, less scar formation and, in many cases, a quicker recovery.

Howard W. Harris, M.D. WHAT IS YOUR HEALTHCARE PASSION? My passion in medicine is to provide exceptional specialized orthopedic care to my patients in a comfortable, efficient and professional manner. I specialize in shoulder repair and reconstruction to help relieve shoulder pain and improve function to get patients back to the activities they love. WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR JOB? I particularly enjoy working with my shoulder patients, as they are very diverse. Shoulder injuries are present from youth athletics to the elderly, laborers to executives and they all have different expectations. I enjoy diagnosing a variety of different shoulder problems and customizing the treatment to meet the individual patient’s needs.

O. David Taunton Jr., M.D. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE RECOGNIZED AS A TOP DOC BY YOUR NORTH TEXAS PEERS? In a word, humbling. I believe everyone enjoys being appreciated for the work they do. As doctors, we dedicate our lives to our profession, making it more of a calling, and to be recognized for the quality of that effort is very gratifying. WHAT IS THE BEST PROFESSIONAL ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? My father is a physician, and his advice when I started my profession was to do quality work and the rest would take care of itself, and I found that to be true. My partners and I have essentially taken the old GMC marketing statement of “Do one thing. Do it well” and based our practice around that concept.

“I love the immediate relief I can provide a lot of my patients.”

44 • JUL 19

Sara Suttle, D.P.M. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE RECOGNIZED AS A TOP DOC BY YOUR NORTH TEXAS PEERS? This recognition has always been the most complimentary to me. Other physicians in the community vote for other doctors who exemplify excellence in their specialties. What a better honor is there than that? WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR JOB? I love the immediate relief I can provide a lot of my patients. When they come into the office with pain and leave pain free, it’s the best feeling in the world.

WHAT IS A COMMON MISCONCEPTION IN YOUR FIELD? I think, by far, the most common misconception is the degree of a podiatrists’ training. Because of the way it has changed over the last 20 years, patients and even other physicians aren’t aware of the parity we’ve approached with other medical professionals. Podiatrists complete four years of training in a podiatric medical school and three years of hospital residency training. Podiatrists can focus on many fields, including surgery, sports medicine, wound care and diabetic care.

DOCS B. Todd Drury, M.D. WHAT IS YOUR HEALTHCARE PASSION? I simply really enjoy the privilege of caring for people. I started my healthcare journey as a physical therapist after attending therapy sessions with my grandfather, and ultimately became an orthopedic hand surgeon. I realized very early on that I enjoyed the very special human interactions that occur between a patient and a caregiver. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR PARTICULAR SPECIALTY? I chose hand and wrist surgery because I love the complexity of how the hand interacts with our environment and the precise nature of the surgeries required to address dysfunctions and injuries of the upper extremity. WHAT IS THE BEST PROFESSIONAL ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? One of my professors at Vanderbilt shared the following quote with me: “Remember that there is no condition known to man that can’t be made worse with an operation.” I’ve kept this in mind with every patient my whole career. Making a sincere effort to avoid surgery when possible is always worth it.

DOCS Kevin M. Honig, M.D. WHAT IS YOUR HEALTHCARE PASSION? I am truly passionate about having a real, lasting impact on a patient’s life. Orthopaedics as a specialty allows the opportunity to truly “fix” a medical problem and help patients maintain a healthy, active lifestyle. HOW DOES YOUR PRACTICE GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY? All-Star Orthopaedics is the official orthopaedic and spine care provider for Carroll ISD providing coverage both on the field and in our Southlake office. We conduct student physicals for all aspiring Carroll UIL athletes with all proceeds going to CISD. Annually, our practice makes contributions to support the Carroll Education Foundation, Carroll Medical Academy and numerous Carroll sports programs.

Mark S. Greenberg, M.D. WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR JOB? By far the most rewarding part of my practice is watching an injured athlete that I have treated be able to return to sports and achieve their goals. Knowing you played a part in that success story is really special. WHAT IS A COMMON MISCONCEPTION IN YOUR FIELD? A lot of people come to our practice anticipating or expecting surgery. Although surgery sometimes is the best option, the majority of our patients’ problems have more conservative treatment options. Orthopedic Surgeons are the musculoskeletal treatment experts, and we can help patients navigate the treatment options for the best possible outcome.

Brian E. Straus, M.D. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR PARTICULAR SPECIALTY? I chose orthopaedic foot and ankle surgery because of the diversity. I treat a wide spectrum of patients, from the very young to the elderly. In addition, I am able to perform a wide array of procedures from small, minimally invasive procedures to large reconstructions. This keeps it interesting! WHAT IS THE BEST PROFESSIONAL ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? Although commonly stated, the exercise of attempting to treat each patient like you would treat your own family member is invaluable. I try to exercise this with every complicated decision and feel that this helps me to clear my mind and focus on what is most important to that individual patient.

DOCS Clifford Bliss, D.P.M. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR PARTICULAR SPECIALTY? I always knew that I wanted to work in healthcare, but I was not exactly sure in which field. When I was in college, I ruptured my Achilles tendon while playing basketball, and I was treated by a podiatrist, which sparked my interest. I also worked at a running shoe store where I learned a lot about foot and ankle conditions while helping athletes. WHAT IS A COMMON MISCONCEPTION IN YOUR FIELD? Many people are surprised to find out that podiatrists not only treat feet but also ankle and lower leg injuries. Most podiatrists have extensive surgical training for foot and ankle conditions.

Shylaja Arya, D.P.M. WHAT IS YOUR HEALTHCARE PASSION? My passion is to get my patients active and moving as quickly as possible, especially after an injury or painful foot or ankle condition. During my years in practice, I have learned that helping people stay active is the No. 1 way to keep them young. HOW DOES YOUR PRACTICE GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY? We support a number of local causes including GRACE Grapevine, the Community Storehouse, Swim4Elise Foundation and the Girls on the Run program. We also recently hosted a blood drive with the American Red Cross. We work in the community, promoting events like yoga classes for athletes with Bear Creek Running Company in Keller and Run4Elise in Southlake.

Nathan Stickney, D.P.M. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE RECOGNIZED AS A TOP DOC BY YOUR NORTH TEXAS PEERS? It is an amazing feeling to be recognized by my peers as a Top Doc. Everyone in our profession is dedicated and hardworking, so it is very humbling to be recognized. ARE THERE ANY NEW PROCEDURES OR TECHNOLOGIES THAT YOU OFFER? A newer procedure that we offer at Foot and Ankle Associates of North Texas is called lapiplasty. A lapiplasty is a surgical procedure to correct a bunion with a significantly decreased chance of bunion recurrence and improved recovery time.

DOCS Neil Patel, M.D. WHAT IS YOUR HEALTHCARE PASSION? The thing I most enjoy about taking care of spine patients is not only using the scientific data when developing a treatment plan but also using my clinical experience to determine the smallest, least invasive intervention to achieve the best clinical outcomes with the shortest recovery time. WHAT IS THE BEST PROFESSIONAL ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? The best advice that I have been given is to “treat your patients like you would a family member.” I truly abide by that. I do not offer or perform any procedure or surgery that I would not recommend for a family member.

David Rothbart, M.D. ARE THERE ANY NEW PROCEDURES THAT YOU OFFER? I specialize in minimally invasive spine surgery. Many surgeries that used to require long hospitalizations can now be done as outpatient surgeries with faster recovery times. We often use new technology such as an intra-operative CT scanner to perform complex surgeries with minimally invasive techniques and with extreme precision. WHAT IS A COMMON MISCONCEPTION IN YOUR FIELD? A common misconception is that patients with spine-related pain often need surgery. The reality is that most patients can be relieved of their pain without surgery. That is a basic philosophy of Spine Team Texas. Less than 5 percent of our patients end up requiring surgery.

Ryan Reeves, M.D. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE RECOGNIZED AS A TOP DOC BY YOUR NORTH TEXAS PEERS? There is no honor greater than being recognized by one’s peers. This recognition is not only a reflection of the service you provide, but a testament that you are exceeding in their own vision of your profession. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR PARTICULAR SPECIALTY? My mother suffered from symptoms that led to surgery. Since then, she has always had disability and impairment from her back. I wanted to provide non-surgical care for those in need, but also be a reliable gatekeeper for those who have legitimate need for surgery.

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE RECOGNIZED AS A TOP DOC BY YOUR NORTH TEXAS PEERS? I am honored to be recognized by my peers at a Top Doc. It means a lot to me that my colleagues think of me in that light, and I will continue to strive to provide excellent care to all of my patients.

WHAT IS YOUR HEALTHCARE PASSION? I enjoy both the cosmetic and reconstructive facets of plastic surgery. From breast cancer reconstruction to a mommy makeover, we get the privilege to improve lives.

WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR JOB? I am lucky to be given the opportunity to affect so many lives, and I accept this big responsibility by making sure I treat each patient to optimize their health and wellbeing. ARE THERE ANY NEW TECHNOLOGIES THAT YOU OFFER? The best new technology that my practice provides is BodyTite. It is a device that uses radiofrequency energy to help tighten skin and improve body contour. It can be used on any part of the body and only requires tiny incisions.

WHAT IS A COMMON MISCONCEPTION IN YOUR FIELD? The term “plastic” is often misperceived to mean fake or artificial like a “plastic cup,” but in fact, the term plastic comes from the Latin term “plast,” which means to morph or change. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR PARTICULAR SPECIALTY? As a plastic surgeon I have the unique privilege of improving the form and function of patients of all ages. I think most of us in medicine can be proud how we become like family with our patients. On several occasions in my practice, I have had the opportunity to take care of three generations in a family, and this is truly special. WHAT IS THE BEST PROFESSIONAL ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? If do what you love in life, it makes it easier to shine.

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE RECOGNIZED BY YOUR NORTH TEXAS PEERS AS A TOP DOC? It’s an honor. When patients love you it’s great, but when other physicians recognize you, it’s a feeling of accomplishment that comes with great humility.

WHAT IS YOUR HEALTHCARE PASSION? I have a passion for solving complex problems. It’s probably the chess player in me, but it’s the difficult cases, the ones other doctors haven’t been able to solve, that give me the greatest satisfaction. Medicine is all about the application of knowledge and experience.

ARE THERE ANY NEW PROCEDURES THAT YOU OFFER? I have a strong interest in peptide therapy and feel that the promise that lies within is incredible, not just for age management, but also for treating common medical conditions. WHAT IS THE BEST PROFESSIONAL ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? An old doctor I moonlighted with once told me to be sure I take a half-day off. A mental health day will prevent burnout and help you be the best doctor you can be for your patients. WHAT IS A COMMON MISCONCEPTION IN YOUR FIELD? Patients don’t really understand how affordable concierge medicine really is.

WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR JOB? Developing the relationships I have with my patients. When they refer their family and friends, I know I have earned their trust. I love having the time, especially under the concierge plans, to build a bond and make a significant impact on someone’s health. HOW DOES YOUR PRACTICE GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY? Living and working in Southlake for many years has solidified my commitment to not only the community, but to the many charities within our community. Coming from very humbling beginnings myself, I’m drawn to help others.

Spiros Manolidis, M.D. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR PARTICULAR SPECIALTY? What defines us as human: the ability to hear, speak and our facial appearance and expression. I was specifically attracted to the complexity of surgery that addresses problems with these vital functions. WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR JOB? As a physician and surgeon I see myself as somebody that helps people and alleviates their problems to get them back to their normal lives. ARE THERE ANY NEW PROCEDURES THAT YOU OFFER? My field, like every other field in medicine is a rapidly evolving one. We have a wide array of implants to alleviate hearing loss, from deafness with cochlear implants, to one side hearing loss with bone anchored hearing aids and a multitude of middle ear implants. In craniofacial surgery, we 3D print custom made titanium implants specific to the patient modeled from their scans. WHAT IS THE BEST PROFESSIONAL ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? Jeffrey P. Taylor D.P.M. WHAT IS YOUR HEALTHCARE PASSION? My healthcare passion is identifying a difficult foot or ankle problem that has not been treated successfully in the past, communicating that to a patient in terms that they understand, and then incorporating a specific conservative or surgical plan treatment plan that best fits his or her needs. WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR JOB? The most rewarding part of my job is experiencing my patients’ successes with them. I derive my energy through full and passionate engagement with my patients. Through their wider smiles, improved attitudes and outlooks, and their ability to utilize their lower extremity in ways that they were not able to do so in the past, I relish the blessing to be part of their journey back to a better quality of life.

SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

Rawn Bosley, M.D. WHAT IS YOUR HEALTHCARE PASSION? My passion is service. The opportunity to use medicine and science to help others is what drew me into the medical field. I was taught that altruism and uplift are the tools for a fulfilling life. I decided to give my life to uplifting others, and medicine was the gateway to accomplishing that. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR PARTICULAR SPECIALTY? As a medical student I thought, “How could anyone ever get bored being a dermatologist?” Dermatologists are surgeons, pathologists, pediatricians, internists and scientists. This field gives me the opportunity to choose my path.

WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR JOB? Seeing my patient’s gratification is truly rewarding. It is fun and fulfilling to solve a patient’s concern with treatments and procedures that often bring quick and satisfying results. ARE THERE ANY NEW PROCEDURES OR TECHNOLOGIES THAT YOU OFFER? One of the great new advances in dermatology is the use of Platelet-Rich Plasma for hair restoration. Prism Dermatology also offers the SplendorX laser that is state-of-the-art for its hair removal capabilities and useful in treating acne and acne scarring.

DOCS Paul T. Marciano, D.P.M. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR PARTICULAR SPECIALTY? In medicine, sometimes you treat the person’s symptoms; in podiatry, you can usually solve the problem conservatively or surgically. It exposed me to multiple fields of medicine, such as biomechanics, orthopedics, dermatology, neurology and plastics. WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR JOB? Educating the patient on their problem instead of only treating it. I feel if the patient can understand their condition, they can help in the prevention and resolution of their symptoms. HOW DOES YOUR PRACTICE GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY? We are associated with local community programs such as GRACE, Stepping Stones and The Gatehouse. WHAT IS A COMMON MISCONCEPTION IN YOUR FIELD? A common misconception in our field is that we don’t perform surgery. At Academy Foot & Ankle, we can surgically repair anything from the ankle to the toes for all ages. We treat anything from dermatological problems (warts, ingrown toenails) to reconstructive surgery. We always exhaust conservative therapy first, but when conservative therapies don’t work, we can definitely repair it surgically.

“It is always an honor to be nominated by my peers. It shows they trust that I will provide excellent care for their patients.”

Jordan Rihani, M.D. WHAT IS YOUR HEALTHCARE PASSION? I am passionate about cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the face, which led to starting a center focused on improvement in facial appearance. As a Board Certified Facial Plastic S u rg e o n , I p e r fo r m both surgical and nonsurgical procedures including rhinoplasty, eyelid lifts, injectable fillers, Botox and laser resurfacing.

ARE THERE ANY NEW PROCEDURES OR TECHNOLOGIES THAT YOU OFFER? We are excited to offer some of the latest advances in fat grafting, including nanofat with PRP for facial rejuvenation. These are natural techniques for improving collagen and use fat from your own body. We also offer radiofrequency microneedling, which combines radiofrequency heat applied with small needles to deeper layers in the skin to stimulate collagen growth. WHAT IS A COMMON MISCONCEPTION IN YOUR FIELD? Plastic surgery does not have to look unnatural or overdone! Bad results tend to stand out, but people rarely notice the subtle, natural results of people who they think are just “looking great.” I take pride in my natural results and often discourage treatments that may make patients look overdone.

Breezy Bites Malibu Poke Crafts Customizable, Chef-Inspired Bowls In A Casual Environment

P Malibu Poke 2355 Olive St., Suite 145 Dallas 469.250.7074 MalibuPoke.com

oke’s, the beloved Hawaiian dish, popularity has skyrocketed over the past few years thanks to its colorful ingredients, healthy components and fresh flavors. These tailored dishes allow guests to explore new flavors while also eating well. And thanks to Dallas’ Malibu Poke, guests can feel good about where their poke is coming from. Owner Jon Alexis set out to create a Southern California-inspired eatery known for creating fresh, expertly sourced poke. With a background in the industry as the creator of TJs Seafood & Grill, Jon knew how to seek out premium offerings and make them approachable for guests.

“We use the same sources to serve the freshest seafood for Malibu Poke,” Jon says. “We also source our produce from local farms.” Malibu Poke uses sashimi-grade fish that’s butchered daily to ensure each bowl comes out picture perfect and full of nutritional value, which is something that many fast-casual locations choose to sidestep. Jon believes just because guests are dining in for a quick meal doesn’t mean they don’t deserve the best product. “As the rest of the poke world seems to be racing to the bottom in terms of quality, we offer the same quality ingre-

dients you'd find in a fine dining restaurant but in a quick, casual atmosphere,” Jon says. Their menu allows guests to build their own bowls – in small, medium (same base as a small but the large protein portion) or large sizes – so they have control of what they enjoy. After choosing a base (brown rice, sushi rice, cauliflower rice, a seaweed blend, massaged kale or a combination of two), guests can select one of their fresh sauces and an array of their toppings – everything from marinated shitake, wasabi tobiko, white pickled ginger, furikake, toasted sesame and daikon are available. Malibu Poke also has a selection of signature creations that are chef-approved. James Beard nominated chef Matt McCallister, known for Dallas’ fine dining establishments like FT33 and Homewood, worked with Malibu Poke to create a unique menu. Some of their dishes are rather traditional, while others – like the Banito Aioli Tuna with Serrano pepper, bonito flakes, micro basil, avocado, toasted coconut and crispy garlic – push the boundaries of what’s expected in poke. The eatery provides an array of options for those who may have a limited diet, so guests choosing to eat gluten-free, soy-free, vegan, Atkins, Paleo or Keto regimes can find something to enjoy on the menu. The Tropical Chimichurri Shrimp, topped with scallion, carrot, mango, jicama and micro radish, is even Whole30 approved. Jon personally set out to build a menu that would be inclusive to those who may not always have a vast amount of choice when dining out. “I'm diabetic, and it's impossible for me to find food I can eat that actually excites me culinarily,” Jon says. “Guests shouldn't have to choose between eating healthy and eating yummy. We serve delicious food...that happens to be healthy and customizable for any diet. That's what I'm proudest of at Malibu Poke.” Malibu Poke also has a menu for “the little minnows,” so kids get a choice in what they enjoy as well. Whether they are adventurous eaters who want to try a tofu cauliflower rice-based bowl or enjoy a cooked shrimp dish, your little ones will also walk out feeling light thanks to their healthy meal. To round out your meal, enjoy kombucha on tap or a house frozen rosé while sitting back and taking in the breezy space. Or enjoy a decadent JOY macaron ice cream sandwich before wrapping your meal up. Either way, it’s easy to feel transported to a new place while taking in the restaurant’s ambiance. “We want Malibu Poke to be a vacation from real life...you walk in, you groove to the yacht rock, you enjoy the California-inspired ambiance and you eat something freaking delicious,” Jon says.

Homey Spread Townhouse Brunch Brings Creative Morning Offerings To Colleyville With its elegant environment and comprehensive menu, Townhouse Brunch is raising the stakes for the local brunch game. After opening in Colleyville in May, the classy, casual eatery started dishing out not only staple brunch offerings but a true array of what brunch is supposed to stand for. Yes, diners will find avocado toast and mimosas. But they will also find a true encapsulation of the best of local breakfast and lunch options – served with a homey twist. Owner Rima Sejdini says that clear vision is due in part to her family’s 40 years of experience in the industry. Rima says she was born into the business because her dad owned a variety of eateries while she was growing up. That led her and her brother to open a few other brunch options throughout the Metroplex, including Barney’s Brunch House with locations in Frisco and The Colony. Now, she’s bringing her elevated offerings to Town Center Colleyville. “We think Colleyville deserves a brunch place that cares for their customers, and our menu definitely brings a new game to the table,” Rima says. The hefty menu doesn’t cater toward a breakfast or a lunch crowd. Instead, it offers a true variety so guests can find an option no matter their taste or mood. Breakfast options include classics like Shrimp ’n’ Grits, cheese-infused grits, onion and pepper beurre blanc and shrimp, as well as playful plates like the Oreo Pancakes, a chocolate batter-based sweet with Oreo crumbles and cream cheese glaze. With everything from benedicts and omelets to sweet crepes and French toast, there is a plate for every person. For those who believe brunch is not complete without a cocktail, mimosas are availabile by the pitcher. Other festive concoctions include a Manmosa – Blue Moon, vodka, and fresh-squeezed orange juice – and a Rosé Lemonade – rosé champagne and lemonade. Their sandwiches, burgers and salads hold up to the same bar set by their breakfast items. The light Tuna Salad Croissant, topped with mixed greens and tomato, offers a refreshing, protein-packed bite while the Townhouse Burger, crowned with bacon, a fried egg, sautéed onions, mayo and cheddar cheese, comes out juicy and delicious. Kids also can choose between the two routes by diving into sweets like the Kids Cakes, a teddy bear pancake topped with powdered sugar, chocolate sauce and accompanied by one egg and two pieces of bacon or one sausage, or the Kids Tenders, served with fries or fresh fruit. Even with chandeliers and a sleek interior color palate, it’s easy to feel comfortable while dining at Townhouse Brunch, and that’s by design.

fort worth Under The Radar Fort Worth offers much more than cattle drives and rodeos. The bustling city is home to several vibrant districts that each offers something unique. To be in the heart of the action, jump in your car (or on the new TEXRail) and venture over to downtown Fort Worth. There lies plenty of lively restaurants and nightlife sites as well as a few hidden treasures just waiting to be explored. If you are up for an adventure and see a new side of Cowtown, we’ve got you covered.

For a sophisticated meal in a contemporary space, head over to GRACE on Main Street. The modern American restaurant embraces seasonality by creating dishes that let their ingredients shine – like the Colorado Rack of Lamb served alongside cauliflower puree and golden raisins. GRACE also offers two tasting menus — one of which is specifically designed for vegetarians — for those who want a larger sampling of their offerings. And with a vast wine list and cocktail program, it’s easy to get lost in all the possibilities. But their talented staff stand ready to lead guests along the way to ensure everyone gets the best experience while dining in. If you need another reason to book a reservation, GRACE’s sister restaurant – Little Red Wasp – will open a Southlake location before the end of this year. Stopping in on your night out is a great way to get a taste of their flavors before they come to town. GRACEFortWorth.com

To enjoy a show after your meal, a quick stroll down Main Street will bring you to Scat Jazz Lounge. The live music venue, which is 21 and older, is located in the historic Woolworth building and gives off an underground club feeling – partly because their entrance is in an alley. But the space, complete with an old-timey, lit-up sign over the front door, consistently hosts up-and-coming local performers as well as national acts that embrace the beauty of jazz. Grab a drink at the bar, and get ready to sit back and relax while taking in some swanky tunes. It’s a great way to get out of the sports bar scene and embrace some quality time with your special someone. ScatJazzLounge. com

For another slightly mysterious spot to enjoy a nightcap, head over to Thompson’s Bookstore. Don’t let the name fool you. It may be located inside the historic Vybek building and appear to be a run-of-the-mill bookstore, but inside awaits a basement bar with a prohibition-style vibe. And just like any good speakeasy, you need a password to get in. Check Thompson’s Facebook page every Friday to see what secret phrase will grant you access. After making your way to the bar, guests will see the craft cocktail list provides a little bit of everything while also focusing on fresh flavors and beautiful presentation. To get out of your comfort zone, give one of their summer libations a try. Or enjoy one of their liquid novelties named after one of your favorite paperbacks – the Summer in the Keys is reminiscent of a key lime pie for those looking for a sweet drink while the Smokey & the Bandit offers a refreshing kick with its ancho chili and barbeque salt finishes. No matter what you try, we promise it will pretty enough to Instagram. ThompsonsBookstore.com

JEFF GORDON CHILDREN’S FOUNDATION DEVELOPMENT SENIOR ASSOCIATE BRINGS NONPROFIT EVENTS TO SOUTHLAKE

J

ust over one year ago, Randi Pund and her family moved to Southlake. Prior to the relocation, she worked with the Jeff Gordon Children’s Foundation in North Carolina. Seeing the immense value she brought to the foundation, retired NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon insisted that she keep working with the nonprofit from Texas. Randi happily obliged and has even started hosting foundation events right here in Southlake.

I GOT INVOLVED WITH… Jeff Gordon Children’s Foundation at the end of 2016 and early 2017 after moving to Charlotte, North Carolina, from Seattle. I was at a women’s networking event and was introduced to someone at the foundation. She asked me to come in and meet the team a few weeks later, and the rest is history! I literally know nothing about NASCAR, which always makes Jeff and the team laugh at my expense – but I remind them all that they hired me for my nonprofit skills, not my NASCAR knowledge. THE FOUNDATION IS LIKE… the kiddos that we serve – small but mighty! Our team consists of a handful of super motivated, energetic and passionate folks who truly care about finding less toxic treatments for children fighting cancer. Since it was founded in 1999, we have raised over $19 million dollars for pediatric cancer research. But we won’t stop there! Jeff is very involved and cares deeply about the mission, which is why he donates Corvettes for us to auction off every year and is always open to whatever event ideas we throw at him! EVERY YEAR WE RUN OUR… ‘Corvette for a Cure’ program where we auction off one of Jeff’s personal Corvettes. Tickets are $100, and there are only 10,000 sold. For the last two years in a row we have sold out, which means we raised $1 million each year! It is truly incredible and we culminate the end of this super fun program with our ‘Corvette Celebration’ in Charlotte, where we fly in the winner and Jeff hands over the keys in front of hundreds of supporters and fans. Next up, we are hosting an epic event in Indianapolis on September 6 called ‘Drive ‘Fore’ the Kids.’ It will be held at Topgolf in Fishers, Indiana, during the weekend of the Brickyard Race and it’s seriously going to be incredible. WE HAD OUR FIRST TEXAS EVENT… last November here in Southlake. ‘Lunch with a Legend’ was a beautiful experience at the Hilton in Southlake Town Square where Jeff and Jamie Little spoke. We auctioned off amazing prizes and we raised an unbelievable amount of money thanks to the super generous attendees. Jeff was super impressed by the generosity of the people who attended and definitely wants to hold another event in Texas soon!

MY BACKGROUND IS IN… social work. I got my master’s degree from University of Washington and worked as a therapist for inpatient teenagers for a long time. When I had my eight-year-old son, Hayden in 2010, I decided to stay home with him. I ended up working as a virtual personal stylist – fashion is a serious passion of mine! A friend was launching a start up called Keaton Row and asked me to join their team. It was so much fun to help style clients all over the country from the comfort of my couch! When we moved to Charlotte, I launched my own business ‘Retail Therapy with Randi’ and have kept my clients even though we moved again – this time to Texas. It is so fun for me to mix my therapy background with fashion. All I want is to help my clients look good and feel good because then we all do good! I ALSO HAD THE PRIVILEGE… of working on a super fun project with the Seattle Seahawks back in 20132014. Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll hired me to create a workshop for underprivileged high school students to come to the practice facility and learn how to ‘compete every day to be their best selves.’ It was such a dream job for me to host teenagers and introduce them to Russell Wilson and all the Seahawks. You could literally see the impact on each kid every single time we hosted groups. WE HAVE LIVED IN SOUTHLAKE… for just over a year now and we love it! We moved for my husband’s job, and once we found Southlake, we knew it was perfect for us! We absolutely love living here. The schools are amazing for our son, the sports are so much fun (Hayden plays ice hockey and baseball) and the town square is so convenient. We are blown away constantly by the genuine kindness of the people. We couldn’t be happier or feel luckier to live here! WE ARE A FAMILY OF… three. My husband Nate is an investment banker for Houlihan Lokey, specializing in the outdoor and tactical markets. He is the smartest guy that I know, and our 15 years together have truly been a privilege. We are the super lucky parents to Hayden, who has the best smile in the entire world and such a fun, outgoing personality. He has already moved three times and has handled it like a champ! And let’s not forget about our pug puppy, Mini-Lou. She is the most affectionate little pug and we just adore her!

WHERE TO EAT OUT ON DIFFERENT DIETS

L

ast month, I celebrated my eight year anniversary as a gluten-free diner. While it’s not by choice (Shout out to the celiacs!), the dietary change opened my eyes to a new world of food. Throughout childhood, I was never a picky eater. I ate everything that was in front of me without a second thought. It wasn’t until my diagnosis that I took another look at what fueled my body. Even more recently, a growing number of diners have been doing the same. Whether it’s for an allergy or a purposeful elimination, people around the world, are re-evaluating their relationship with food. With that, new diet plans and food trends have followed. There are still strict vegans out there — who make up 3 percent of Americans according to a recent Gallup snapshot finding — but there are also a growing number of people interested in learning more about plant-based diets. There will always be people looking to drop a few pounds, but there are even more interested in seeing how their bodies would react to a few less processed food items. This progression has led restaurants to become more transparent about their offerings. Now more than ever, diners can feel comfortable having a conversation with restaurant staff about what ingredients are used in the dishes. And it’s easier to ask if the kitchen can make something healthy (and tasty) for someone on a restrictive diet. Whether your diet is a lifestyle or you are just interested in becoming more aware of your food choices, you deserve to know your options. And these local restaurants are providing a smoother process thanks to their knowledgeable teams and accommodating menus.

VEGETARIAN AND VEGAN DINERS Making up 5 percent and 3 percent of the national population, respectively, vegetarian and vegan choices are becoming more mainstream. While fast-casual stops like Juice Junkies may seem like obvious choices because of the array of drinks, the Keller restaurant also has a vegan bites menu. The expansive list includes everything from the Meatloof Wrap — shredded carrots, shredded romaine, pickled purple onions, sweet and spicy pickles, balsamic/mayo dressing, JJ’s seasoning in a whole wheat tortilla (gluten-free tortillas are also available) — to the Better Than “Tuna” Salad — chickpeas, celery, shallots, dill pickle, vegan mayo, mustard, sea salt, black pepper, romaine, cucumber and black olives. Paired with one of the shop’s rich drinks, this full meal has enough interesting flavors and textures to keep you going. For a hearty, juicy bite, The Impossible Burger at Hopdoddy is a must. The patty is made entirely of plants and it can be paired with vegan smoked gouda and vegenaise to make it fully vegan. Malai Kitchen also offers rich vegan offerings like the Vegetable Spring Rolls and Iron Pot Green Curry with Tofu. Just be sure to talk with your waiter to see the selections available to you. And to cap off the nice meal out, and vegan diners can enjoy the Mango Sticky Rice or head over to Cinnaholic to enjoy a plant-based sweet. Vegetarians can also find filling food at all of those establishments as well as at eateries like Luna Grill. With starters like bright Stuffed Grape Leaves and Sweet Potato Fries served with chipotle sauce; entrees like the Veggie Kabob, mushroom, squash, onion and bell pepper served with hummus; and beautiful salads like the Modern Greek Salad, topped with crispy chickpeas, feta cheese, Greek olives, sliced pepperoncini, tomato, cucumber, house pickled red onions and house vinaigrette, it’s easy to build out a full-course meal while dining in. And for a salad that’s much more than lettuce on a plate, Southlake’s latest healthy eatery Coolgreens clearly marks which items can be made with fresh, vegetarian ingredients. “FREE” DINERS This is for all you gluten-, dairy-, and soy-free eaters out there. Getting your hands on the nutrition or allergen menu is key to eating out successfully, and thankfully, it’s now normally housed on restaurants’ websites. For gluten-free pizza that offers a crust that still holds up, Delucca Gaucho allows diners to order a custom gluten-free pie, made with a tapioca flour crust, with up to two toppings. Gluten-free pasta and garlic bread can be enjoyed at Taverna Rossa. Unleavened Fresh Kitchen clearly marks what dishes can be made to accommodate gluten-free diners, including the Havana Wrap, guava-glazed pulled pork, ham, chopped horseradish pickle, sliced red cabbage, swiss and honey mustard with a gluten-free tortilla, and the Grilled Sweet Corn, fresh-shucked corn topped with shallot, harissa crema, lime, ancho, cilantro and cotija.

For a sit-down meal, P.F. Chang’s has an extensive menu that includes Chicken Pad Thai, Chang’s Lettuce Wraps and Fried Rice. The Chinese restaurant even has a gluten-free sauce arrangement available for interested guests. If you are just looking to grab a sweet while out on the town, Pure Cafe has a glutenfree bakery featuring brownies, muffins and s’more bites. Dairy-free diners can often find good options where vegan dishes are served (Cashew cheese is alive and well.), which means a trip to Modern Market can provide a lot of choices. With shareable plates like the Modern Mushroom Pizza, which can be served with no cheese or vegan cheese, people of all ages can still enjoy this fun comfort food. The menu also includes an array of bowls and salads that contain no dairy, and they even have seven salad dressings for guests to choose from. Keller’s Rush Bowls also provides dairy-free and soy-free dishes for those who still want a creamy, healthy meal. Just ask the staff to make your açaí without those products and get ready to dive into a treat that won’t make you miss the allergens. More soy-free options await at Las Colinas’ Freshii. The nutrition and allergen guide is conveniently located on their site, so guests can peruse the list beforehand, which states soy-free diners can eat everything from the tangy Fiesta Wrap to the Thai-inspired Bamboo Bowl. SHORT-TERM REGIME Whether you are dedicated to Whole30 or playing around with paleo, there are a range of popular regimes that can help diners be more intentional with food. Some routinely use these diets to drop a few pounds before a big event (Hello, me again...) or to eliminate certain ingredients to see if they feel better as they eat a cleaner diet. For those unfamiliar with these holistic choices, let’s start with the most strict: Whole30. This 30-day plan cuts out things like sugar, dairy, grains and alcohol from participants’ diets and can act as a “shortterm nutrition reset,” according to the Whole30 website. Because diners need to focus on eating whole foods, it can be the hardest plan to execute while eating out at restaurants. But now, nearby eateries are introducing Whole30 compliant meals. Southlake’s Snap Kitchen makes grabbing a healthy breakfast, lunch or dinner pre-made meal easy and tasty with fun flavors. The Whole30 dishes include Chopped Brisket with BBQ Sauce and Chicken Piccata that are accompanied by flavorful sauces that will make you feel like you aren’t missing out on taste. Zoe’s Kitchen also has a Whole30 approved menu including the Chicken Kabobs, Moroccan Citrus Roasted Chicken (sans turmeric rice) and Potato Salad. Plus, the beloved Zoe's Dressing is Whole30, so you can grab a bottle and enjoy it on the dishes you are creating at home. For paleo (a dietary plan that models prehistoric human diets — normally made up of lean meats, fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds) and keto (a lowcarb, high-fat diet) diners, Chipotle has a bowl for you. The quick stop eatery rolled out a new line of lifestyle bowls at the beginning of this year that is 84 • JUL 19

perfect for people trying to eat out on a diet. The Paleo Salad Bowl features romaine lettuce, barbacoa, fajita vegetables, green salsa and guacamole while the Keto Salad Bowl includes romaine lettuce, carnitas, red salsa, cheese and guacamole. Even if you are not dedicated to one of these plans, these bowls are a great way to get in your protein while on the go. For a sweet, Steel City Pops introduced a new array of paleo pops: Paleo Mixed Berry, Paleo Chocolate and Bosc Pear with Honey. It’s easier now more than ever to enjoy a meal out, no matter your specific diet. It might take a little bit of research and a quick conversation with the restaurant, but gone are the days of settling for the one and only option on the menu. And as more restaurants start to see the value in accommodation, diners will be able to put more stops on their “friendly” lists, which is for the best, because everyone is happier when they aren’t hungry. Splash Of Summer

A Deep Dive Into Natural Swimming Holes

T

he Texas heat is no joke. So any chance you may have to spend time in a pool can feel like a sanctuary. If you’re still looking to fit in a summer vacation, why not explore some of the country’s natural swimming holes? These hot spots, found in some of the country’s best public parks, are a great way to take in new sites while chilling with the family. Just grab your swimsuit, sunscreen and goggles, and get ready to dive into summer fun.

Balmorhea State Park One of the world’s largest spring-fed swimming pools can be found in the Lone Star State. Located in Toyahvale, Texas, this western oasis dates back to the 1930s. And it has been keeping Texans cool ever since. The pool, which sits at 72 to 76 degrees year-round, has more than

15 million gallons of water flow through it every day, thanks to the nearby San Solomon Springs, and it holds 3.5 million gallons of water at a time. The pool covers 1.3 acres, so there’s lots of room to swim, snorkel or scuba dive around. But it still does draw a crowd on warmer days. Be sure to check the park’s Facebook page to see when their pool hits capacity for daily use. If you’re trying to make your trip a day visit, feel free to bring a sack lunch and take advantage of the park’s picnic sites and playground. Or, to extend your venture, guests can stay overnight at one of the 34 campsites on the property. TPWD.Texas. gov/State-Parks/Balmorhea

Slide Rock State Park All of this location’s excitement is in its name. Arizona’s Slide Rock State Park features an 80 foot-long slippery slide that gives you the same rush found at a waterpark. The natural chute features a seven percent decline from top to bottom, and the algae on the sandstone helps

guests keep moving forward along the way, so you just sit back and take in the thrills. Slide Rock State Park is also located near an apple orchard and beautiful red rock structures; so taking in the view elevates the fun. There is also an open swimming area that stretches half a mile for those who just want to cool off. Locals can make a day out of the state park visit by taking in the nearby exhibits about the park’s original owners and stopping by the gift shop full of snacks, water, sunscreen and Slide Rock memorabilia. There is also an array of rustic cabins nearby that are just waiting to be explored. AZStateParks.com/Slide-Rock

Barton Springs Pool Located within Austin’s 358 acres of Zilker Park sits one of the city's biggest natural attractions: Barton Springs Pool. The three-acre, natural-fed swimming hole collects water from the underground springs, so it’s always being refreshed with new resources. Because the water comes from underground, it stays at a cool 68 degrees, making it a cool, comfortable environment for a hot Texas day. And with a diving board, slides and beautiful Austin views, it’s safe to say there are plenty of activities there for visiting families. Other than plenty of other tourists trying to beat the heat, locals may come across another Texas creature while in the water: the endangered Barton Springs Salamander. These slender animals only reside in this area and can be found under rocks or in the gravel underwater. If you see one, be sure to treat it with care as the public space goes out of its way to ensure the Barton Springs Salamanders are protected. A trip down to Austin with a stop at Barton Springs Pool can be a great way to educate your little ones about Texas wildlife and natural resources. Plus, it can be one stop along the way while exploring all there is to do in our state’s capitol. AustinTexas.gov/ Department/Barton-Springs-Pool

Welcome Back, Dolly! See Tony-winning ‘Hello Dolly!’ Revival When It Comes To Town

M

eet Dolly: She’s beautiful, spunky and the wife of a rich man — at least, she will be. You see, Dolly Gallagher Levi is a matchmaker and the star of “Hello Dolly!,” a Broadway musical revival that is coming to Music Hall at Fair Park this month. Dolly has her sights set on a wealthy Yonkers merchant and a seemingly foolproof plan on how to get him: help the merchant’s young clerk and his assistant fall in love with a widowed milliner and her assistant. Easy, right? A show doesn’t earn the nickname “Broadway’s Greatest Musical” for nothing. “Hello Dolly!” is charming, funny, full of life and oh-so-entertaining! Written by Jerry Herman and Michael Stewart (and based on Thornton Wilder’s, “The Matchmaker”), this musical premiered on Broadway in 1964. It earned a recordbreaking 10 Tony Awards including Best Musical — the most ever given to one production until 2001. Later, it inspired a film of the same name starring Barbara Strei-

sand, which took home three Academy Awards, and four reappearances on Broadway, including the most recent in 2017. When this show played on Broadway, Golden Globewinning actress Bette Midler helped it win another four Tony’s in 2017, including Best Musical Revival. The multi-talented woman and Tony-winning actress Betty Buckley will play Dolly during the play's North American tour. Fans will be treated to gorgeous vintage costumes, renditions of their favorite songs (“Hello Dolly!,” “Before the Parade Passes By” and “It Takes a Woman”), and a set praised by many as one of the greatest staging’s in musical theater history. Whether you greet her like an old friend, or you meet her for the first time, you’ll love Dolly just the same. “Hello Dolly!,” we can’t wait to see you soon!

A Genre-Busting Evening See Unlikely Duo Blink-182 And Lil Wayne Together

R

ap and pop punk go together like peanut butter and pickles: Other than the occasional daredevil (or pregnant woman), most people would never mix the two. That’s all changing this summer as multiplatinum, award-winning artists Blink-182 and Lil Wayne are set to hit the road together on their first-ever co-headlining tour. These stars have both been making music since the early ’90s. Can’t wrap your head around these two groups performing together? Just watch their nostalgic mash-up music video of Blink’s “What’s My Age Again?” and Wayne’s “A Milli” — it will make your inner middle schooler very excited. Formed in 1992, Blink-182 helped usher in the pop punk craze with their catchy songs about teen angst and heartbreak. The lyrics to “All the Small Things,” “I Miss You” and “Always” are as familiar to long-time fans as classic rock songs are to their parents. The band is made up of Mark Hoppus, original member, bass guitarist and vocalist, along with guitarist and vocalist Matt Skiba and drummer Travis Barker, who both joined in 2015. During their career, the band has released seven studio albums, sold more than 50 million records worldwide and is still going strong with a recently released single, “Blame It On My Youth,” and an announcement of an upcoming album. Lil Wayne is a five-time Grammy winner, who has released 12 studio albums and sold more than 100 million records around the world. He is also the CEO of his own label imprint and became the solo artist with the most entries on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2012 with 109 songs (beating Elvis Presley’s previous record) — an honor he held for five years. The world is embracing revivals and celebrating diversity more than ever — this Blink-182 and Lil Wayne collaboration couldn’t have come at a better time. This concert will be the can’tmiss show of the summer, guaranteed.

Here, the birth of our nation is commemorated with water shows, all-day live music, a jet-pack hydroflight show and an incredible 29-minute fireworks display. Other highlights include a local band competition, festival food (kettle corn, turkey legs, corndogs!) and a free KidZone area where little ones can go on horseback rides, get their faces painted, let out their energy on the bounce houses, water slides, zip lining and more. Adults should bring their swimsuits (and sunscreen) as well, because you’ll want to go tubing in the river to stay cool. Wear Stars and Stripesthemed attire, bring your American spirit and get ready for a good time! 35TH ANNUAL PARKER COUNTY PEACH FESTIVAL JULY 13 WEATHERFORD | Peach tea, peach pie, peaches ’n’ cream — Southerners love this sweet fruit! Most famous starring on “Parks and Recreation,” Swanson has also had roles in “Will & Grace,” “The Lego Movie” series, “The Founder” and more. He wrote and stars in “Latin History for Morons,” a hilariously unique attempt at honoring forgotten Latin heroes. Filled with costume changes and quick tidbits, “Latin History for Morons” touches on everything from the Aztec empire to Latin fighters in the Revolutionary War and Civil War, famous Latin entertainers and so much more. This one-man act won the 2018 Special Tony Award, was recorded live and is currently not only streaming on Netflix, but also is currently embarking on a national tour. It’s so good future history books will have to include Leguizamo as an influential Latin figure! Photo by Matthew Murray

eeping up with pool trends is a daunting task for any homeowner. As we’ve seen over the past few years, 90-degree angles and clean lines are the look to have. All of those painstaking stacked, natural-looking waterfalls are being knocked down for sleeker, modernized water features. If you already have a pool that is more than 10 years old, it may seem like you’ll have to move to a new house to keep up with the trends. Thankfully, there are some smaller scale projects you can take on to breathe life into your backyard.

scaping that uses as many native, droughtresistant plants as possible and arranges them in efficient, water-saving ways. You’ll often see these plants emerging out of gravel beds and rock gardens. So how does this relate to pools? If your pool takes up the majority of the backyard or is sectioned off, we recommend extending the deck or pavement around it and eliminating most grass. From there, implement some xeriscaping practices to get splashes of green around your pool area. Soon you’ll find the largest outdoor contributor to your water bill is…well, your pool!

MODERN MOSAIC If you love a good accent wall or a bit of added color, consider adding a tile mosaic to your pool. This can appear on the bottom of your pool or even on above ground water features. If you have a raised wall for a waterfall effect, why not decorate it? Think of it as an aquatic backsplash.

STARTING FROM THE GROUND DOWN If you are starting from scratch, and by scratch, we mean not even a hole in your backyard, and then these tips are for you. First and foremost, clean edges are the name of the game. If 90-degree angles aren’t your style, then consider going for an infinity pool look that can be implemented on any type of edge. Deep blue hues are the dominating trend for water appearance, so think about going darker with the pool bottom. Next, look into the myriad of new technologies available to you, such as sound and pool lighting. The sky is the limit if you’re starting from scratch!

DECKED OUT A great way to update your pool is by updating its surroundings. If you, like many Texans, are tired from the impossible task of keeping grass green during the heat of summer, xeriscaping is your answer. For those unfamiliar with the term, xeriscaping is a style of land-

in 500 How to Love a Little More

Y

ou know the feeling of needing to get out of town so badly you feel like you can’t last one more day? Like you just need a break from it all and can’t quite seem to catch a break? The feeling of really needing to escape is real. But over the years of devoting daily time to mindfulness meditation and a few other rituals, I’ve learned how to manage the curve balls each day brings in a way that isn’t stirring me up inside so much anymore. I’ve learned the real beauty of life is in the small moments and tasks that make up a day, and that life is lived in the moment we’re in. It all boils down to caring for the nervous system. When we don’t have the tools to manage our own mind’s response to the outside world, the outside world has total control over us. We’re pulled in all directions and react to the smallest nuisance like it’s a life-threatening event. Our nervous systems spiking and barely recovering all day every day gives us that feeling of direly needing an escape from life. Vacations are great, but without tending to the underlying issue, we return home in the same place we left — needing another break. Whether you are a 60+ hour a week employee, business owner or a 24/7 full-time mom (or both!), here are a few things that have helped me immensely in loving life a little more:

ciency. Make an appointment with your doctor, get a blood panel done and work together to get everything back on track as soon as possible.

2. Be mindful of smartphone use in the early morning. First thing in the morning your mind is most open and clear. Smartphone technology is designed to play on our vulnerabilities and our blind spots. It’s designed to remind us of all we’re missing, so we keep signing on even when there’s no reason. An easy way to take back control of your own mind is to wait an hour before checking email, text and social media. Allow your brain and body to wake to the day more quietly and naturally. Make this a daily ritual and over time you’ll notice the sense of spaciousness this brings to your state of mind. 3. Consistency is key. One of the most powerful practices available today to help people manage their own thoughts is meditation. Through this practice, you come to realize that you are not your thoughts. The power of your thoughts begins to diminish and creativity, clarity and joy shine through. Consistency is key. Ten minutes of daily meditation is more powerful and brainchanging than an hour once a week. If you’re telling yourself that you don’t have time, ask yourself how much time you spend scrolling social media each day and reevaluate. This was a powerful realization for me.
