hi, school! That’s what they’ll all be saying in a few very short weeks! If your kids are like mine, they’re already counting down the days to grace the halls of the state’s top school district (for the fifth straight year by SchoolDigger.com). Pretty soon teachers, too, will say their first hellos — to the graduating class of 2020. This month we’re lookin’ good thanks to some of this year’s momentous class featured in “Five Ones to Watch,” our annual collection of bright students with even brighter futures. We see so much potential in this year’s crew that it got us to wondering, “What are some of our previous ‘Five Ones’ up to?” Read our companion piece, “Five Ones We Watched,” to see what life has in store for some of our past stand-outs and hear their reflections on how being a Dragon helped shape their lives for the best. Of all the kids you’ll see in this month’s issue the entrepreneurial spirit of one in particular caught our attention. Only a rising-junior, Steven Wayland is already wise beyond his years. Before tasting the joys of a driver’s license, or presumably a cup of coffee, he founded the car enthusiasts group Cars and Coffee Southlake to great results. Steven put his love for cars and desire to showcase them out for public consumption and has met success. Here’s to your Dragon finding the same in 2019-2020.

To Make School Mornings Easier

Set out everyone’s outfits before going to sleep the night before. Nothing halts carpool like a missing shoe.

Meal prep some go-to snacks for lunches. Cutting up vegetables Sunday night can save you time during the week.

Perfect the healthy balanced breakfast. Sometimes that balance means juggling a bottle of milk in one hand and a breakfast bar in the other, but it still gets the job done.

HIGHLAND VILLAGE LIONS BALLOON FESTIVAL AUGUST 16-18 The Highland Village Lions Balloon Festival will have something for everyone. Kids will love the effervescent hot air balloons and Kids Zone. Live music, a car show and vendors provide entertainment for parents. And, of course, everyone can get behind feasting on festival food. Come out to this free weekend event to take in everything from tethered balloon rides and arts and crafts to rocking tunes. Keep all backpacks in one centralized place in your house. Then you can just grab and run to the car.

Give your older kids their own responsibilities in the morning. Whether that means feeding the dog or making their own beds, it’s one less thing that’s left for you.

Ensure everyone goes to sleep a little earlier than normal. A good night’s rest makes everything a little easier.

Shut off devices an hour before bedtime. Screens can make it difficult to wind down.

Make the routine fun by adding some excitement into the morning. Crank up the tunes, jam out in the car or have a 30-second dance party before walking out the door — it’s a great way to put a smile on their faces before sending them off on their way.

Stay calm through it all. A deep breath can do wonders first thing in the morning.

THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS “My favorite movie is the first ‘Fast and Furious’ movie. I’ve just about memorized all of the lines!” – Steven Wayland, founder of Cars and Coffee Southlake

THE DARK CRYSTAL: AGE OF RESISTANCE NETFLIX | AUGUST 30 GEFLINGS UNITE TO SAVE THE WORLD OF THRA Return to the world of Jim Henson and his puppet pals in this Netflix-original prequel to the 1982 cult classic. “The Dark Crystal.” When the Skeksis, a race of Vulture-like vermin, take over the world of Thra, three elf-sized Geflings discover the Dark Crystal, an ancient power that fuels the Skesis’ strength. Now determined to rebel against their oppressors, Rian (Taron Egerton), Brea (Anya Taylor-Joy) and Deet (Nathalie Emmanuel) join forces to free their land against the likes of the Skeksis. Produced by the Jim Henson Company and directed by “The Transporter” creator Louis Letterier, “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” is nostalgia packed inside of an epic adventure, and it releases on Netflix on August 30.

HOBBS & SHAW | IN THEATERS | AUGUST 2 A ‘FAST & FURIOUS’ DUO What do you get when you collide an unstoppable force with an immovable object? Chances are you’d get Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), two men who are quick behind the wheel and hate each other almost as much as they hate slowing down. In this spin-off to the spectacular “The Fast and Furious” series, “Hobbs & Shaw” follows the unlikely duo as they team up to take down Brixton Lore (Idris Elba), an MI6 agent-turned-genetically enhanced terrorist. Directed by “John Wick” and “Deadpool 2” filmmaker David Leitch and written by “The Fast and the Furious” alum Chris Morgan, “Hobbs & Shaw” takes the franchise into bold new directions - namely more explosions, more racing and a lot more slick cars.

ask A. . NICKELODEON CASTS EUBANKS STUDENT ON ‘ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A FIFTH GRADER’

HOW DID YOU GET CAST IN THE SHOW? They advertised a nationwide open casting call, and my agent Dee Ann Vernon with the Kim Dawson Agency asked me if I would like to do it. I said it sounded like a lot of fun, so I said yes! I was then chosen through Nickelodeon’s audition process. Once I got picked, I was super excited.

WHAT WERE YOU THINKING WHEN YOU WERE STANDING BEHIND THE PODIUM? No matter if I got the question right or wrong, I just felt proud to be there.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE SUBJECT? Social studies. I was mad about getting a 99 in the class.

HOW DID IT FEEL BEING THE ONLY FIFTH GRADER FROM YOUR STATE? I am very proud to represent my school. It is a very good school district and encourages us to always try our best just like I did on the show. My teachers were so supportive and encouraging in the classroom and also after they found out I was on the show. Knowing that I am the only student from Texas is a big compliment too. I am grateful for the opportunity to be on the show and to represent our Lone Star State. I hope everyone will see how hard we tried to help the contestants when it was our turn and how much fun we all had doing it!

16 • AUG 19

... FIFTH GRADER

Colin Heintz

WHAT WILL YOU REMEMBER MOST FONDLY FROM THE SHOW? At the end of the episodes, after the contestants are done, we all would go out there and dance together.

HOW DID YOU MEET THE REST OF THE SELECTED FIFTH GRADERS? Once we went to LA for the first time, all of us who made it that far gathered together, and we met each other and became really good friends.

AND MEETING THE SHOW’S HOST, JOHN CENA? He’s a super chill guy. At the end of the day, he was just our friend John.

HOW DID IT FEEL TO GET TO SEE YOURSELF COMPETING ON TV? It was strange and exciting to see myself competing on TV. We were on a swim trip in Florida when the first episode I was in aired. We were watching with my family, teammates and coaches. It was really fun. We were only able to watch about half of the show until the storms got so bad they knocked the TV off the satellite. I was so happy to be reminded of what a fun time we all had on the show and see how happy everyone was when they watched it.

Carroll Student Steven Wayland Creates One of The Metroplex’s Largest Car Shows P H O T O S BY E M I L E E P R A J D O

L

ast November, Steven Wayland, a 15-year-old without a driver’s license, announced Cars and Coffee Southlake was going to kick off in 2019. It was arguably an overly ambitious declaration. But in January, when he held the first event, over 400 cars packed into the Dragon Stadium parking lot. “I decided it would be a good idea to start announcing that it was going to happen and that there is no possible way that it wouldn't happen,” Steven says. Eight months later, the monthly event is still going strong and has moved to a larger venue at Gateway Church. “Sometimes in life, people don't know what they can't do,” Steven’s dad says. “Steven didn't understand that he can't do this. He didn't understand that it wouldn't be that easy or quite frankly, might be impossible.”

OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW

While Steven’s fascination with cars dates back to when he was still learning to talk, his car show host aspirations began last fall. In October 2018, Cars and Coffee Dallas announced that it would be holding its final event that December. Cars and coffee events take place all across the nation and all serve the same purpose: providing a space where car owners and enthusiasts can gather and admire all kinds of vehicles over a cup of joe. Cars and Coffee Dallas, hosted by Classic BMW in Plano, ran for over a decade, sometimes drawing in as many as 1,000 guests. As car enthusiasts across the Metroplex mourned the loss of a monthly gathering, Steven saw an opportunity. At the time, he had never been to a cars and coffee event. He made a point to go to the final Cars and Coffee Dallas in December. By then, he had already announced Cars and Coffee Southlake. He locked down all social media handles for Cars and Coffee Southlake and started to build a following. His first Instagram post read: “Due to the lack of #carsandcoffee in the general area, I am proud to announce that #carsandcoffeesouthlake is going to blow you away with what we have planned for next year! Stay posted for more updates and location info!” That initial post garnered likes, comments and suggestions from local car enthusiasts and clubs. There was no backing out. By December 17, he announced the date and venue: January 26, 2019, at Dragon Stadium. In that time, Steven and his dad were working together tirelessly to secure the venue, sponsors and vendors while also creating enough hype to get people interested early on. “I sort of forced him into being my business partner,” Steven says of his dad. SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

AUG 19 • 19

This gives Steven a rough idea of how many people may show up, but nothing could have prepared him for the incredible showing at the first ever Cars and Coffee Southlake. Steven estimates a total of 425 cars made it out. "We were blown away and not prepared,” Steven’s dad says. “It looked like we had it down and were ready for this, but we weren't.”

LAMBOS AND LOGISTICS

Steven partnered with ParkUpFront early on. The ParkUpFront app acts much like Facebook for car enthusiasts. Users can show off their garage, interact with other car enthusiasts and share events. Much like other social platforms, users can post their own content and “like” and comment on other users’ content. Through the app, Steven is able to create event pages for every Cars and Coffee Southlake event. His event is also one of the few in the area recognized by ParkUpFront as an Official Event. By accessing the event through the app, users are able to register their cars in advance. 20 • AUG 19

As with any new event, Cars and Coffee Southlake had some kinks to work out. A big part of a typical cars and coffee event is the exit. People line the street where the cars will drive past, anxiously awaiting a flashy farewell. In the past, this has ranged from burnouts to revved engines, and unfortunately, the occasional wreck. Steven wanted to make sure that people could still have a fun exit while staying safe. This ended up being harder than anticipated. “The first couple events, we didn't have any police officers,” Steven says. “It's hard to find the middle ground. With no police officers, it's anarchy, but with a lot of officers, it's like, 'What are we supposed to do.' That was April. April was tough.” As cars lined up to leave Dragon Stadium during the first few events, Steven was there helping direct traffic. Often, he and other volunteers would instruct drivers clearly: “No burnouts, no fishtails.” Even though drivers were on a public street and technically no longer on event grounds, Steven still felt partially liable for event-goers. By April, he knew it was time to call on the Southlake Police. While it took some time to find “the middle ground,” it seems to have worked out. After the June event, one car owner even posted a photo of a Southlake police officer at Cars and Coffee, with the caption: “Real cool officer holding the no burnout sign as we were leaving, awesome!” SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

There was also unexpected costs that Steven had to learn to budget for, such as portable restrooms and, on one occasion, having the stadium parking lot power washed. Building the event from the ground up has given him a crash course in everything from finance to social media strategy. "Keeping excitement is really hard to do,” Steven says. “People get really uninterested very easily. In the winter months, especially. It was really hard to start the event in January with the weather. You have to always be doing something to keep people interested or else it will dissipate." Now, with an estimated 5,000 followers across multiple social media platforms, Steven posts regularly to drive interest to the next event. The event has had people drive in from as far as Austin and continues to draw an audience from all over the Metroplex. With their recent move to Gateway Church, Steven hopes to further expand the event. “My main goal right now with the Gateway venue is to expand it — I'm going to call it 'Manifest Destiny' – to the other side of the parking lot,” he says. As the event grows, so will its positive impact on the community. Even before Cars and Coffee Southlake started, Steven wanted the event to benefit a local nonprofit. He knew about Southlake Lions Club through a friend and decided it would be a good fit. Right now, a portion of the proceeds from Cars and Coffee Southlake directly support the Texas Lions Camp — a summer camp for children

Revved Up with physical disabilities, Type 1 diabetes and cancer. Cars and coffee participants are charged $10 per car – spectators park in a separate lot for free — and Steven estimates about 25 percent of the proceeds from that fee is donated. “For the past several years, I have been involved in mission trips, helping people in need and volunteering,” Steven says. “With Cars and Coffee [Southlake], I saw an opportunity to give back on a monthly basis. The care community as a whole really enjoys supporting a good cause, so when word got out about what I was doing, it really helped gain a lot of support.”

IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT

After three months of successful events, April finally arrived, and Steven turned 16. He got his license on his birthday and eagerly hopped into his BMW M48. The event on April 20 was a great birthday present: perfect weather, and in Steven’s words, “just a ton of cars.” While he kept his age and identity largely in the background on social media, his classmates at Carroll High School fully knew what he was up to. “They don’t call me Steven anymore, they just say Cars and Coffee Southlake really fast like it’s all one word,” Steven says of his fellow Dragons.

Revved Up

When he wasn’t obsessing over cars, Steven was participating in cross country for the past two years. Although he has since hung up his running shoes, there’s still plenty on his plate. In his spare time, he is working toward his pilot’s license. With an entrepreneurial spirit and an impressive work ethic, it’s clear that the incoming junior will go far… even if he doesn’t know where yet. For two more years, Steven will go home from high school and see a poster from long ago. It’s a picture of a 2006 Ferrari F430 with a note that says “due 2020.” He has wanted that car since it was released when he was four years old. While he realizes now that his former goal will likely not hit its due date, he’s been around far nicer cars since he started Cars and Coffee Southlake. He grimaces when asked what his favorite car in attendance has been, but the Bugatti Chiron from January’s event is top of mind. And why wouldn’t it be? At $3 million, it’s one of the world’s most expensive production vehicles. No matter what kind of cars show up, with seven events under his belt (May’s event was canceled due to inclement weather.), Steven has two major takeaways. "Weather is the scariest variable,” he says. "I've learned that it's a lot harder to do than I originally thought. It's tough, it takes a lot of man hours, a lot of manual labor." Hopefully, the skies will stay clear for his upcoming event this month. While everyone around him prepares for football’s return, Steven will be working hard to keep Cars and Coffee Southlake an event that people look forward to every month. 22 • AUG 19

CARROLL ISD BRINGS HOME THE UIL LONE STAR CUP After the year the Dragons had, it should come as no surprise that they are officially the 2019 winners of The University Interscholastic League's (UIL) Lone Star Cup. UIL, the governing body over Texas High School athletic and academic competitions, created the Lone Star Cup in 1997. Since, Southlake has collected the cup, first at the 4A level during the 2000-2001 school year, all the way to the 6A division. The Lone Star Cup is awarded annually to six high schools, one in each of the six UIL classifications (1A through 6A), based on team performances in district and state championships. This includes state and area marching band, tennis, team tennis, cross country, volleyball, football, swimming and diving, wrestling, girls and boys basketball, soccer, golf, track and field, academics, one act play, softball and baseball performances. With four athletic state championship wins, even more playoff appearances and a strong fine arts showing, the Dragons created a gap in points that could not be closed. Their total was 120, with the runner up, Austin Westlake High School, earning 104 points. The winning schools in each classification will receive the UIL Lone Star Cup trophy and a $1,000 scholarship, also presented by the UIL. This is Carroll's seventh cup win.

CARROLL ISD STUDENTS DELIVER HANDCRAFTED SHOES TO MAYOR, CITY COUNCIL Carroll ISD teacher Summer Neimann and six of her students gathered at the Southlake Town Hall on June 18 to share their hand-painted Converse shoes with the city council, including Mayor Laura Hill. The students started designing their shoes in April when Neimann held an art competition called “The Mayor’s Shoes,” where the mayor reviewed student’s designs and pick her favorite from the bunch. Hill loved all of the designs so much that she selected six runner-ups for the rest of the council members as well. Hill selected shoes designed by student Carolyn Teng, and inscribed on the side of her shoes reads, “Together, we stand. We are Southlake.”

ELEMENTARY STUDENT EMMA HAMPTON CLEANS UP SOUTHLAKE After a fierce weather storm struck the Metroplex on Father’s Day weekend, 8-year-old Emma Hampton witnessed all sorts of trash and garbage polluting Cambridge Place Pond, where she likes to frequently watch turtles and ducks. Concerned for the animals’ safety, she put on her boots, strapped on her gloves and went out there with her mother, Amy, to clean up the pond. Their hard work, which resulted in collecting eight bags worth of trash, was recognized by several prominent public figures in the area, including Southlake DPS and Mayor Laura Hill. She is proving that individuals can make a difference.

SOUTHLAKE RESIDENT MAKES IT TO DAY THREE IN LAS VEGAS WORLD SERIES OF POKER TOURNAMENT Over 9,000 poker players met in Las Vegas in July to compete for the $10 million grand prize in the 2019 World Series of Poker tournament. One of them was Southlake’s very own Mark Jameson. Even though he didn’t win the grand prize, he still made it to day three of the tournament and one step closer towards placing at the final table. Jameson started playing poker five years ago, and he won his entry into the world series after playing through several satellites. He started with $60,000 in chips and outlasted about 7,400 players before he missed the money bubble on day three. Although he went home with no earnings, Jameson enjoyed playing at the tournament and the chance to meet several other talented poker players, including 2009 Poker Hall of Fame member Mike Sexton. “They’re literally from around the world,” Jameson says of his competition. “At least 30 percent of the people at the tables I was on were from foreign countries. People fly from everywhere to play in this thing. It was literally a one world deal.” LOVE & HOPE GALA BENEFITING THE CEC TO FEATURE SPEAKER ELIZABETH SMART Mark your calendars for the annual Love & Hope Gala on September 19. hile most academic tutoring centers base their program on a national curriculum, Chelsea Hall is a different story. Located one block away from Carroll Senior High School, Chelsea Hall makes it their mission to provide a fun, impactful tutoring experience that is specific to what their members are studying in class at Carroll High and Carroll Senior High. Chelsea Hall focuses only on the Carroll ISD curriculum, offering group study sessions with up to eight students and a teacher who reviews the material that they are learning in class every week to prepare them for upcoming tests. “Our teachers are plugged into what is actually happening in class,” Chelsea Hall Director Daphne Barnard says. “Each group consists only of kids from the same course, and all groups are guided by teachers who either teach in the district or are very familiar with the Carroll ISD curriculum. It’s far more effective than a session where the tutor may not be as informed on the school curriculum.” Barnard swears by this interpersonal approach. “We strive to implement a group tutoring philosophy in a setting where students collaborate with supportive teachers to achieve their highest GPAs possible. This also allows us to charge our members much less than the cost of one-on-one tutoring.” Want to experience Chelsea Hall for yourself? Register online and drop in for one of their Return-toSchool sessions, which begin August 5. Weekly groups for the upcoming school year start on August 25, and Chelsea Hall’s grand opening is 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 17. JESSICA BOWMAN Jessica Bowman spent her senior year at Carroll as the Emerald Belle captain. Now, she continues to dance on the sidelines, but as a member of the University of Texas Pom Squad. The public relations major and business foundations minor will graduate in the spring with hopes of breaking into her desired industry. But she’s not worried about standing out and proving herself as a leader, and that’s thanks to Carroll. “The Emerald Belles drill team has prepared me for anything and everything in college and in life,” Jessica says. “As a Belle, I learned the value of being a part of a huge team of hardworking, talented and ambitious girls. These skills and qualities are something I have taken with me throughout my years at UT and on pom, and have led me to hold leadership positions in all of my organizations I am involved in.” Jessica has acted as a co-captain of Texas Pom and is active in a sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha. She hopes incoming Carroll seniors will get involved in their passions and make an impact in different organizations. “There is no better way to prepare yourself for the future than to push yourself in the present,” Jessica says. “Find your passion, and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Even if you do not succeed the first time, just the process of striving to be a leader and getting involved is a learning experience in itself.”

WILL NATHMAN After graduating from Carroll in 2016, Will Nathman wanted to continue on with his musical aspirations. The Carroll Jazz Orchestra and Wind Symphony alum went on to study at the University of North Texas, and he plans to graduate next spring. While at UNT, he joined the UNT One O'Clock Lab Band, and is now the group’s saxophone first tenor. Will loves being able to play locally, but that passion has also led him to take on bigger stages — like the one at Disneyland. Will performed in the 2018 All-American College Band, a program hosted at Disney that features 21 musicians performing every day over the summer in the park. He was also able to participate in clinics from music industry professionals while in the program. This past summer, Will had the chance to return to California to act as the student director of the 2019 band. These programs have been quite intensive, but Will credits Carroll’s orchestra with instilling him with the skills to succeed in these environments. “Rehearsals in [the Carroll] program were intense, but they totally prepared me for a future in music,” Will says. “If you let passion and hard work guide you, it will always turn out great.”

DREW BROWN Drew Brown captivated Southlake audiences during his time in Carroll Theatre, and he even went on to be nominated as a local best actor by the Dallas Summer Musical’s High School Musical Theater Awards. Since leaving Carroll in 2016, he graduated a year early from NYU where he obtained a bachelor's of fine arts degree in drama. While enrolled in the program, he had parts in several short films and even produced a few of his own that are being submitted into festivals this upcoming year. He also became a member of a New York film studio, Stonestreet, that helped shape several big names like Idina Menzel, Miles Teller and Camila Mendes. Drew is now moving to Los Angeles with hopes of breaking into the competitive industry, and he credits Carroll’s program for helping hone his craft and boosting his confidence. “I believe the experience of working with talent of that caliber is what gave me the boost I needed to pursue acting in college,” Drew says. “Of course, even with all of that, the best memories I have of Carroll Theatre still has to be the times I got to spend creating art and having fun with the amazing friends I met in the program, some of whom are still my closest friends today.”

AZHAR HUSSAIN Azhar Hussain made a name for himself in the local high school debate circuit back in 2015. He attended national tournaments, like the Harvard Congressional Debate, where he placed among the top 16 out of more than 500 participants from across the country. Now he is using those communication skills while studying at an Ivy League. “My time at Carroll on the team helped me develop strong speaking and communication skills that have helped me throughout life,” he says. The 2016 Carroll alum is completing his senior year at Dartmouth College and has plans to work for Goldman Sachs in New York after graduation. While he is thankful for his high school experience for putting a successful life on track, he looks back at Carroll as a place where he was able to make true friendships. “I loved the camaraderie traveling with the team. The late nights preparing for tournaments were tough, but looking back, they are really fond memories with friends,” Azhar says. “The Southlake team had a big culture of student mentorship, so I am forever grateful to my seniors who took the time to teach me when I was coming up in the program.”

SOPHIA FORMELLA During her junior year of high school, Sophia Formella caught our eye for being the only Southlake student selected to be a part of the Texas All-State Women’s Choir. After graduating from Carroll Senior High School in 2016, Sophia continued studying at the University of Miami's Frost School of Music. That passion for music that started to take shape while in Southlake blossomed as she majored in music education and vocal performance. In college, she’s been able to show off her talent in several performances for an array of audiences. She is on track to obtain a bachelor’s degree in the spring, and she hopes to go on to complete a masters program in vocal performance and opera starting next fall. Carroll ISD not only supplied a wellrounded education but also a standout choir experience that’s fond to look back on. “Academically, I, of course, enjoyed a wide variety of my courses and studies — but the shared times and learning in the choir room will always have a special place in my heart,” Sophia says. “Carroll taught me the importance of having a well-rounded education while always striving for excellence.”

What is the most rewarding part of your job? Helping people is the best part of our job! We love when we can alleviate a patient’s pain and provide a very comfortable experience — that is our goal! We love what we do, and we love the people we are all blessed to work with. How do you make patients feel at ease at the dentist? It’s about the patient experience. TOLLESON ORTHODONTICS SHANE REX TOLLESON, D.D.S., M.S.D.

What’s your secret to success? I believe the first line of our mission statement sums it up pretty well… “We at Tolleson Orthodontics will be, first and foremost, loving people who are committed to building up every single person with whom we come in contact.” How is your dental practice different from others in the area? We work hard to combine modern excellence with a relaxed, family-friendly personality. And since Southlake is home to my business and family, you know who we are and where to find us! What is the most rewarding part of your job? It’s so rewarding to watch selfconscious patients discover self-confidence during orthodontic treatment. A smile is powerful that way. Even our office mascot, T-Rex, wasn’t always the king of dinosaurs. Like most of us, he battled self-consciousness for one reason or another, be it for his tiny arms or big teeth. My reward is seeing my patients roar with confidence after their smile transformations!

FIVE ONES TO WATCH

What do a thespian, football player, Bollywood dancer, varsity choir member and National Art Honors Society member have in common? They’re all seniors in our annual “Five Ones to Watch” this year! Every August, we strive to highlight five of Carroll Senior High School’s best and brightest. While this number is only a fraction of the talented, driven students making up the class of 2020, these five represent their class well. We have no doubt they will go

THE CLASS OF 2020 HAS VISION

KHUSHI SACHDEVA BOLLYWOOD DANCE CLUB While she has only been in Carroll ISD for one year so far, Khushi Sachdeva took no time to fully acclimate as a Dragon. “When I first came to Carroll, I was thrilled to find that they had a Bollywood dance club in place and joined right away,” she says. “We recently organized a fun-filled cultural festival and successfully raised over $1,000 in funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.” She has been dancing for as long as she can remember, so the club proved to be a great fit. In fact, she now serves as the group’s creative director. Outside of school, she is the co-founder and artistic director of Let’s Bollywood, a local dance company. Khushi is also a member of La Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica (Spanish Honor Society), Mu Alpha Theta (Math Honor Society) and National Honor Society. On top of it all, she will serve as a Green Jacket during the 2019-2020 school year. “I love my school,” Khushi says. “CSHS has done a lot for me, from giving me new friends and amazing mentors, to healthy intellectual challenges and opportunities to grow as a person.” After high school, Khushi is considering a career in the business or financial sectors, possibly pursuing an MBA en route to that. Her top college choices include the University of Texas at Austin and Texas Christian University, but she says regardless of where she ends up, she wants to make a positive impact on those around her. “While I have been here for just a year, I know that what I have learned about myself and others will stay with me for a lifetime,” she says.

2 0 2 0 REILLY BUCKLEY VARSITY CHOIR To say that Reilly Buckley has diverse interests is an understatement. While he is primarily involved in choir – serving as president and participating in both Varsity Choir (Chorale) and Show Choir (Encore) — Reilly is also an active member of Odyssey of the Mind, National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society. Odyssey of the Mind is a program that aims to teach creativity by having students solve unique problems in a competitive setting. Reilly’s team has placed in the top 10 at the world championships every year of his high school career. Even when listing his favorite classes, Reilly reveals the type of thought process that makes him a staple on his team. “English is my favorite class by far because I love to discuss and analyze the books that we’ve read with my peers,” he explains. “I really like hearing other people’s perspectives, especially when they are different than mine.” With his variety of interests, it should come as no surprise that he plans to dual major in business and the arts when he graduates next May. While he is most proud of his accomplishments with Odyssey of the Mind, it is his choir directors whom he credits having the biggest impact. “Both of my choir directors, Mr. Doucet and Mr. Ramos, have really impacted my high school experience,” Reilly says. “They have both pushed me to be the best performer that I can be and have been incredibly supportive along the way. They have also provided me with so many wonderful opportunities to express myself through music.”

MICHELLE D’AMICO THEATRE The incoming historian for Carroll Theatre and vice president of choir, Michelle D’Amico practically lives on the stage. She can remember the first time that she realized her life’s passion when she was about 10 years old and attended a Broadway musical. “We went to see a production of ‘Newsies’ on Broadway and we got front row tickets and it was really exciting,” she recalls. “It was the first time I had been that close to a big stage like that. During the opening number, I just started tearing up because I was like, 'This is what I want to do with my life.'" And she has been pursuing that passion ever since. In addition to participating in Carroll Theatre, Michelle also trains at OhLook Performing Arts Center, a Grapevine community theatre. She has received numerous awards and nominations, including being named honorable mention as a featured actress by Dallas Summer Musicals for her role as Little Sally in Carroll’s production of “Urinetown.” Michelle also won a Schmidt & Jones Award for best female actor in a musical after playing Louise in “Gypsy.” The list goes on, and she credits her teachers and advisers for this. "[Choir director] Mr. Ramos has helped me so much. I wouldn’t have been able to develop the characters and learn all of the crazy music we have to learn without him,” Michelle says. “Mrs. Pringle is the theatre teacher and director at school and she does so much for the program and works so hard to put on amazing shows. She has helped me grow as a performer.” She has a busy year of competitive college auditions ahead of her, but she hopes to major in musical theater in New York and pursue a career in Broadway.

2 0 2 0 LUKE CADENA NATIONAL ART HONOR SOCIETY Luke Cadena is an artist through and through. For the past two years, he has been an active member of the National Arts Honor Society and participated in numerous art competitions. Among some of his favorite classes that he has taken so far, Drawing II Pre-AP, Drawing III, AP 2D Design and AP U.S. History all make the list. “These classes were my favorite due to my interest and the teachers I was given; they kept the class interesting,” Luke explains. Luke regularly participates in art competitions by entering his work in events such as the Congressional Art Competition and the Visual Arts Scholastic Event. Most recently, Luke earned third place in Sister Cities International’s Young Artists and Authors Showcase. To enter, artists must submit a piece that fits the year’s theme. With fellow artists submitting art from all over the world, Luke faced steep competition and impressively landed in the top three. He has worked hard to regularly enter his art while maintaining a high GPA and working part time. Art is his passion as well as a highlight of his high school career. “One of the teachers that has impacted me the most is [visual arts teacher] Mr. Horn,” Luke says. “He has pushed me to improve and grow tremendously over the past years. I have been so lucky to be his student since my sophomore year.” After high school, he plans on going to college and studying printmaking and textile arts. In the meantime, he’ll continue his creative endeavors through his senior year.

KASEN LOVELESS SCHOLAR ATHLETE Listed on his Twitter bio are a selection of activities you might expect to see from an impressive high school athlete: 400-meter in track, wide receiver in football, catcher/outfielder in baseball. While that’s a heavy load for anyone, the real eyebrow-raising statistic is buried beneath them — his SAT score and a quote that reads, “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard.” Considering his score puts him in the 99th percentile nationally, it’s clear that Kasen has put in some hard work. He is also a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Southlake Young Men’s Service League and Green Jackets. This summer, he received an offer to play football from his No. 1 college choice, Colorado School of Mines. “Ever since my back injury kept me out of last year's football season, I had been worried that I would not be able to attend a school with great academics and a football program to match,” he says. “The offer from Mines was an answered prayer.” He plans to study mechanical engineering and play football at either Colorado School of Mines or Johns Hopkins University. With one more year of varsity football ahead of him, Kasen is looking forward to his senior year and another year under the guidance of head coach Riley Dodge. “When Coach Dodge got the coaching job at Carroll, I was ecstatic because I knew that he would be bringing that same type of confident leadership I had seen from him at a young age,” Kasen recalls. “Through his coaching, he has revived my love for the game and shown me how to be a better man in the process.”

Old-School Dining Reinvented Alamo Club Elevates The Typical Neighborhood Restaurant With Unpretentious Twists

L Alamo Club 1919 Greenville Ave. Dallas 469.399.7600 AlamoClubDallas.com

70 • AUG 19

owest Greenville is lined with dining options, but when the area’s beloved eatery Blind Butcher closed last year, there was a hole left for a homey destination where neighbors could gather and enjoy comfort food favorites. After Alamo Club opened in its place this past February, however, that need was more than met. The new neighborhood restaurant, run by owner Austin Rodgers, became the local option for those interested in unpretentious yet elevated food in a warm enviornment. Austin has been a part of the Dallas dining community for more than a decade. After starting off in a mom and pop pizza place in Denton, working his way up at Nick and Sam’s, helping manage Neighborhood Services’ restaurants and open-

ing other concepts like Town Hearth and Montlake Cut, Alamo Club is his first venture of his own. After coming up with the concept, Austin knew he wanted to join the restaurant community in this specific area. “I always wanted to open my own restaurant, and when the Blind Butcher space became available, I went the same day to check it out and loved it,” Austin says. “After four months, I officially got the space. I love east Dallas in general, and Lower Greenville in particular is surrounded by neighborhoods. It’s a destination on weekends and is very walkable. I wanted to do something a little more upscale than Lower Greenville has currently.” Austin Rodgers sought out to create an intimate space that felt like it had deep roots in the community, like the old-school bars

and restaurants you often see in larger cities like New York and Chicago. “I want it to feel familiar, nostalgic, warm and cozy,” Austin says. “That the guests have a sense of belonging.” Whether seated at one of the homey booths or the community table, diners should expect to feel at ease after they find their seat, which is in part because of the restaurant’s interior. “The décor is classic, fun and funky. The barstools are classic — ones that you see in a New York City restaurant — and the tables are mahogany because many of my family members had mahogany tables. I want guests to feel like they are eating at the table they grew up eating on,” Austin says. Austin carried that sense of nostalgia into the menu. By embracing comfort food favorites and adding sophisticated touches that made sense with the dishes’ flavors, Alamo Club’s final menu is full of classics served with a twist. “I didn’t want anyone to have to learn new items. I want you to look at the menu and know what the items are,” Austin says. “It is familiar and comfortable. Food that everyone knows and grew up with and elevate it from there. The menu will be ever changing with new items but still familiar.” Start out by ordering from the cocktail menu at the bar that runs down one side of the dining room. Their drinks are approachable yet elevated because of their thoughtful ingredients, like The Marg — Camerana tequila, lime, orange bitters and cointreau. Plus, it’s $5 before 7 p.m. and after midnight, so it’s a great, cheap drink to enjoy for those dining in early or late. For a more refined drink, ask about the Reid’s Tasty Jam, the restaurant’s rotating Champagne cocktail. After taking a sip, or two, order a few starters for the table. The Pimento Deviled Eggs, created with pimento cheese, pickle and served with country ham, are a great way to get a taste of Alamo Club’s flavors. Or, for something distinct to their menu, try the Nancy’s Pink Dip, which is named after Austin’s mother. Available entrees include a few opulent protein plates, like the salmon served with Poblano risotto and coriander vinaigrette and the Blackened Striped Bass with habanero creamed corn and chive oil. But Alamo Club’s sandwiches encapsulate their foodie mission: upscale takes on traditional dishes. The Crispy Chicken Sandwich, served with a spicy slaw that adds acidity to the dish, provides a balanced bite. And the Bacon Cheese Burger, stacked with dressed arugula, tomato, onion and aioli, holds up to comfort food expectations. So join the club and the fun by heading over to Lowest Greenville. Alamo Club promises to provide guests with friendly service and familiar food that will satisfy your comfort food cravings.

All In The Name Eno’s Pizza Tavern Brings Great Pizza And Community To Cypress Waters For waterfront dining in the city, head over to the growing restaurant scene at Cypress Waters. The district, located off North Lake, has curated an array of trendy eateries from around the Metroplex and made them approachable for local diners. One of which, Eno’s Pizza Tavern, joined the lineup in May and has wowed guests with their locally sourced ingredients and cracker-thin pies. This is Eno’s third location, with their Bishop Arts storefront acting as their flagship. But thanks to its focus on building community, the restaurant seems right at home in Coppell. They do get their name, afterall, from the Italian word “enoteca,” which refers to a regional wine shop. “At Eno’s, we’re all about providing a laid-back, neighborhood eatery where guests may relax and enjoy a casual meal with family and friends,” owner Shane Spillers says. “We love that each of our restaurants offers its own community vibe.” The 6,500-square-foot establishment, which includes a 1,800-square-foot rooftop patio overlooking the water, boasts Italian classics like bruschetta, pasta and sandwiches. But its their pies that put them on the map. The especially thin pizzas feature an array of interesting ingredients like the Meatball and The Goat, topped with fresh basil, goat cheese, sliced Texas beef and boar Texas meatballs, and the Pig Smiley, finished with Eno’s sausage, pepperoni, Benton’s ham and local honey. There are also plenty of traditional pies for those who favor the simplicity in a classic pizza. Eno’s also offers a vibrant beverage program with creations from big local names like Four Corners Brewing, Community Beer Co. and Peticolas Brewing Company to name a few. And with Landon Winery right next door, award-winning pours are a given. Eno’s is also next to Town Hall, a 3,500 square-foot event space that will bring live music onto the scene. So guests can sit back and enjoy their offerings while also taking in a show. “We’ve been fortunate to collaborate with phenomenal local talent and are excited for folks to try what we’ve come up with together,” Spillers says. Enjoy an ice-cold craft beer and fresh-out-of-the-oven pizza at Eno’s. Their warm atmosphere will have you coming back time and time again.

For an inventive, chef-driven menu focusing on Mexican cuisine, take the four-minute walk to Beto & Son. Chefs Beto and Julian Rodarte integrate authentic flavors and ingredients into their dishes while also focusing on creating the next generation of Mexican food. Guests should start out their meal with one, or a few, of their tableside presentations like Chef Beto’s Tableside Guacamology and their notable Liquid Nitrogen Margarita. Be warned: The ice-cold offering will turn a few heads as the fog evaporates around the cart. Those classic flavors pair nicely with Beto & Son’s distinct offerings like the carne asada torta, grilled fajita steak, fundido cheese, pickled slaw, refritos, rajas, avocado and chimichurri stuffed in bread sourced from a local panaderia, or the Gulf of Mexico Ceviche Tower with shrimp, slaw, avocado, pico and Mexican cocktail sauce. Regardless of how you order, diners are sure to find something on the menu they will want to taste on their next visit. BetoAndSon.com

home STYLE Polished Playrooms

N

othing upsets the balance of an elegant, organized home quite like toddlers. Thankfully, we’re living in the era of online furniture shopping, meaning plenty of cute organization solutions are at our fingertips. On top of that, Pinterest feeds are filled with thousands of themed ideas for your little one’s play space. It can get overwhelming, to say the least. Thankfully, we’ve narrowed it down to two of our favorite approaches to keep your kids’ playroom in style while staying appropriately whimsical in the process.

KEEP IT CONTEMPORARY This is the easiest and tamest approach, but you can still make it fun. If you want the playroom to blend with other rooms in the house, keep the wall colors in theme and add any motifs that carry throughout your home. In other words, if you have crown molding in the den, keep it here too. If you want to keep largely the same color scheme, that is fine, but try to add an extra splash of color wherever possible. Model the kids’ desks, chairs and toy storage after what the grown ups use around the house. If you have a modern, art deco home office, think

about recreating the miniature version of that so they have a productive place to do homework. Kids furniture comes in all styles now. We’re no longer limited to plastic Fisher Price sets. Obviously, this will work better with an older age group. We’re not suggesting you go full ‘Gatsby’ in the nursery… Unless you want to!

MAKE IT MAGICAL If you’re totally fine with making the playroom into its own unique space, then it’s time to bust out the paint and tool kit. Perhaps the most fun interior wall option — but also hardest to paint over later — is a chalk wall. Using chalk paint, you can turn a playroom into a haven for artistry and creativity. We recommend only doing an accent wall, both for cleanliness and lighting purposes. If you’re confident in your craftsmanship skills, consider adding a built-in fort for endless hours of pretend games. Not that confident? That’s OK! We’re also seeing a lot of tents and teepees these days, and those are drastically easier to assemble. For a final touch, install some string lights to create the perfect sleepover space — even if it’s just for a sleepover with Mom or Dad.

here’s still time to squeeze in one more vacation before school starts. Just pack up the car with a few snacks, drinks and, of course, the family, and get ready to set out on an adventure. There are so many vibrant communities outside the Metroplex that are just waiting to be explored. If you have a free day this month (or are looking for a way to entertain the kids before the semester starts), here’s where you should spend it.

Glen Rose, TX Animal lovers can get close and personal with exotic creatures in less than two hours. Five miles from Glen Rose sits Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, the home of

more than 1,000 animals from 50 different species. Guests can see everything from emus and ostriches to zebras and giraffes on the center’s guided tours or in the comfort of ther cars on a self-guided excursion. After venturing through the space, stop by the Children’s Animal Center to interact with a few of the animals, like the Nigerian dwarf goat Nausie, the 100-pound African spurred tortoise Ralph and the pot-bellied pig Hamlet. After taking it all in, tourists can learn more about the animals that used to walk the planet at Dinosaur Valley State Park. Keep an eye out for the real dinosaur tracks that sit along the Paluxy River. Or, you can watch to see what real wildlife calls the area its home in 2019. Either way, this quick day trip makes for a great educational opportunity. FossilRim.org

Waco, TX

A straight shot down I-35 will bring you to bear country – Baylor Bear country, that is. Waco is full of historical museums, quaint retailers and fun restaurants. But most day-trippers travel down to take in their favorite Texan HGTV’s stomping ground. The city is home to Chip and Joanna Gaines from “Fixer Upper,” and they have filled the community with beautiful amenities, including Magnolia Market at the Silos. The location features a sprawling green space full of lawn games, food trucks, a garden, a flower shop and a home décor haven. With all their options, it’s easy to establish a home base on the property and let your family take in their surroundings. Plus, it makes for a great backdrop for group pictures. To refuel before heading back to Southlake, swing by Common Grounds. Their espresso drinks and house specialties can be enjoyed on their array of outdoor seating arrangements or in the car on the way home. Magnolia.com/Silos

Want a change of scenery? I found this gorgeous get-away in Wise County for my buyers. I can help you find one, too!

Possum Kingdom Lake

Family fun awaits at Possum Kingdom Lake, just a three-hour road trip away. The Texas oasis features more than 18,000 acres of water and is surrounded by rolling hills and cliffs, making for quite the view. There are plenty of traditional outdoor activities that will get your blood pumping like boating, swimming, canoeing and fishing. But there’s also hydraflying available, thanks to WaterRush in the Cove. Guests can rent Jetovators, on weekends only, and be thrust into the air using the lake’s own water. It’ll be an experience you soon won’t forget. Plus, it’s a great opportunity to take in the entire area’s scenery. For sightseeing without the adrenaline, Possum Kingdom Lake offers beautiful hiking and cycling trails. The park also features sandy beaches perfect for a family picnic or afternoon spent looking over the water. PossumKingdomLake.com

Athens, TX

While this East Texas town might not have as much history as the Greece destination, Athens, Texas, located just two hours away from Southlake, gives tourists the opportunity to slow down and take in their surroundings. With an array of vineyards, wineries and a brew house, parents can find a whole lot to get excited about after they roll into town. But kids will also enjoy venturing around the Henderson County Historical Museum as well as the East Texas Arboretum and Botanical Society. The arboretum offers more than 100 acres of wooded area full of trees, flowers and wildlife. And with on-site attractions like the Wofford House, a home built in the 1850s, and Little Red School House, a replica of an early Texas school house, you might be able to sneak in a little bit of learning on your voyage. Follow The Yellow Brick Road Check Out The Amazing Art Of The Brick LEGO Exhibit At The Perot Museum

H

undreds of yellow LEGO pieces have pooled in a pile on the ground from inside a man’s ripped open chest. No, this isn’t some horrific emergency room scene — it’s actually a stunning sculpture called “Yellow” that can be found inside the Art of the Brick exhibit, running through August 18 at the Perot Museum. Internationally renowned contemporary artist Nathan Sawaya turns toys into masterpieces in this display, which will make you forget everything you thought you knew about playing with LEGOs. It all started as a way to de-stress from his job as a New York City corporate lawyer. Created specifically for the Perot Museum is a LEGO version of the “Pegasus,” the signature winged horse of Dallas, which will greet visitors upon entry. These impressive one-of-a-kind creations are only part of the show. The rest is filled with meticulously recreated versions of famous sculptures, including Vincent van Gogh’s “Starry Night,” Alexandros of Antioch’s “Venus de Milo,” Michelangelo’s “David” and Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa.” Millions of LEGOs were used to create The Art of the Brick, which is the largest and most elaborate display of works constructed using only LEGO bricks. Sing Your Way Up The Mountain Enjoy The View At Dierks Bentley’s Latest Concert

C

limbing a mountain is a lot like going to a Dierks Bentley concert: It’s a heart-racing, hard-to-breathe, exhilarating experience! Both have stunning views (that beard, those eyes!) and moments of reflective introspection (like when he sings “Living” about the times we take life for granted by just going through the motions). And, it may not technically be exercise, but singing along to his huge collection of songs and 18 No. 1 singles will take your breath away — in a good way. See for yourself when Bentley comes to the outdoor Dos Equis Pavilion this month as part of his Burning Man tour, where he will heat up the summer with hits like “Women, Amen,” “Nothing on but the Stars” and “Burning Man” among others from his ninth studio album, “The Mountain.” As a country artist who has dabbled in folk and rock ’n’ roll, Bentley is constantly learning about himself, taking risks and growing. His latest release, for which he co-wrote 10 of the 13 songs, is a perfect example of this, as he escaped to the mountains of Colorado for a while to write it. One of the main themes is the conflict you experience when half your soul drifts through the air and the other half is rooted at home. The result of his hard work was “The Mountain,” which earned the highest debut sales of his career and became his seventh charttopping album. During his 16 years in music, Bentley has also won Country Music Association awards, Academy of Country Music awards and 14 Grammy nominations, created a lifestyle collection called Desert Son and opened four Dierks Bentley Whiskey Row locations in the U.S. Some of his iconic songs include “What Was I Thinkin’,” “Drunk on a Plane,” “Different for Girls” and “Somewhere on a Beach.” Clear blue skies, positive vibes, passion and life lessons can all be found at a Dierks Bentley show, along with high-quality country music, of course. Mountains can either block your path in life or give you an opportunity to rise above your problems — join Bentley in choosing the latter. The view is stunning from up here!

Aug 7-18

MUSIC HALL AT FAIR PARK | Tradition or progress? It sounds like a modern issue, but it is one people have been struggling over for centuries. Case in point: “Fiddler on the Roof,” a musical whose original run on Broadway in 1964 won nine Tony awards and was the longest-running musical at the time. This is a story from the 1900s, in which Tevye tries to maintain his Jewish customs while his daughters try to marry more forward-thinking husbands. Tony-winning director Bartlett Sher and the team behind “The King and I” bring a new take to this classic musical, complete with fresh choreography, extravagant costumes and a talented cast, with the same world-class songs (“Tradition,” “If I Were a Rich Man,” “To Life (L‘Chaim!)”), that audiences have loved for years. After all, some traditions should never go away.

AUGUST 9-11 KAY BAILEY HUTCHISON CONVENTION CENTER | Muggles beware: The largest group of witches and wizards this side of Hogwarts is coming back to Dallas to celebrate all things Harry Potter! Potterheads from around the world are flying in to re-live the magic of this award-winning, multi-billion-dollar franchise. Here, you can wear your spectrespecs, pygmy puff keychains and fake lightning-bolt scars with pride. You can debate theories with other fans and learn some new ones. And, you can listen to inside information from some of the former cast and creators, enter the Cosplay contest and snag oneof-a-kind merchandise inside a shop that’s (almost) as cool as Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes. Grab your wands, polish your brooms, straighten your robes— it’s going to be an adventure.

Dancing lights, spinning videos, trippy special effects and so many swirling lasers will surround you as the original master recordings of Pink Floyd blast from the speakers. in 500 Focus On Life’s Seasons, Not Its Balance

B

alance — a word so many of us work tirelessly to achieve. This one single word demands all our strength as we attempt to navigate the pressures of having a career, raising children, supporting our spouse and having a social life on top of our countless other day-today responsibilities. We can constantly feel like we are being pulled in 500 different directions, and just as we feel like we have it under control, we realize we do not! Rather than being in “balance,” I believe that there are “seasons” we are required to give more to one area of our life than another. My husband Riley and I have walked through countless seasons of life together. We both grew up in Southlake and met in the sixth grade at Eubanks Intermediate School. However, this idea of viewing life in “seasons” verses “balance” did not become real for me until God brought our story full circle in March of 2018. My second son Landrywas born on March 8, and Riley was named the head football coach at Carroll Senior High School two weeks later! In addition to the typical stress of having a new baby, Riley dove right into his new role as head coach at our alma mater. In the midst of the blessing and excitement, I no longer felt like I had it all together. My mind would race as I would contemplate how I was going to tack-

le the day’s tasks before me. I wanted to win in every area of my life and instead, I felt like I was failing because I couldn’t give 100 percent to everything and everyone 100 percent of the time. One morning, as I was reflecting on all God was doing in my heart, the verse Psalm 46:10, “Be still and know that I am God,” was repeating over and over in my mind as if God himself was whispering in my ear. At that moment, God changed my perspective on “balance” and the unrealistic expectation of the word. He showed me that there was grace. There will be days that I need to spend a few more hours in the office; there will be days that I need to be at home with my boys; there will be football seasons that require sacrifice. And that is OK. The joy that comes from all those things is so much greater than any stress or worry. So, focus on your season of life because the focus on balance is futile. Going through all of life’s seasons in community is the game changer. It truly takes a village, and I am so thankful for ours! We are so excited to be back home and for our children to experience the same tradition, support and love that this town has given us.

FOUNDER OF BYBEE COLLEGE PREP GIVES ADVICE TO PROSPECTIVE COLLEGE STUDENTS

W

hat started out as a research project for his master’s degree in educational leadership soon turned into a career for Shane Bybee. Founder of Bybee College Prep, Shane has spent over half of his life teaching. Over the years, he has seen the field of college prep become more in demand. With an immense amount of knowledge and experience on the topic, Shane was nice enough to give us an inside look at college prep and offer some advice along the way.

MY COLLEGE EXPERIENCE WAS… different than the experience of most of my students. First, it was almost 30 years ago. So much has changed in the admissions process. Back then, we picked up paper applications and wrote the essays by hand. Writer’s cramp was the biggest factor that kept us from applying to more than three schools. Everything is digital now. Now students can copy and paste their way through 7 to 10 applications. In addition, I was the first generation of my family to finish college. My father attended a semester at UNT when it was called North Texas State, but neither of my parents were able to give me much guidance about the college process. However, in 1987, you didn’t need as much as you do today. MY WIFE AND I… have been married for 13 years. I got started on this fatherhood thing a little later than most. I have two boys, 6 and 4, and am constantly amazed about how much I didn't know about parenting before I became a parent. I’m sure by the time they’re teenagers, I will know even less. WHEN MY FIRST SON WAS BORN… it was clear that I wanted more flexibility than a classroom teacher’s schedule allows. Since I had seen success helping students on the SAT, I decided to see what I could do as a test prep coach. That has inevitably developed into college prep as well with the development of my College App Camp. I am incredibly lucky that my avocation and my vocation have so much overlap. COLLEGE PREP AS A PROFESSION… is exploding, largely because the barrier to entry is so low and demand is so high. Getting into selective schools (less than 50 percent admissions) has become more difficult. The sheer number of applications submitted each year has created a lot of “noise” admissions officers have to work through. While 30 years ago we applied to three or four schools, today's students are applying to six to eight. All of this has created even more anxiety for parents and students, much of it unnecessary. Parents are looking for help, which has created an opportunity for college prep and test prep specialists. THE FIRST THING PROSPECTIVE COLLEGE STUDENTS NEED TO FIGURE OUT IS… what kind of problems you like to solve. Too often we start with the question about what a student wants to do. It’s a version of the “What do you want to be when you

grow up?” question we asked them in elementary school. The debate is sometimes should they follow their passion or their purpose. My advice is to follow your purpose. Find out the things you’re good at and work to get better at those things. It builds a sense of efficacy, which builds confidence and the other elements a student will need to succeed. College is going to be hard enough as it is. Finding an area of study that gives them the opportunity to learn more about the types of problems they like to solve will create the motivation they need to keep going. ONCE THEY HAVE AN IDEA… of what kinds of things they want to do, they can start finding a degree that lets them study those things and a school that offers the degree they’re looking for. Students shouldn’t compromise on what they want to study in order to go to one school over the other. Once they have a list of schools, they can make the other decisions about which colleges fit their academic profile and offer what they are looking for in other areas. They can also consider which schools make the most sense for them financially. IT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO RECOMMEND… one standardized test over the other in a blanket statement. The biggest difference in the two tests is the time they allow. In a strict time-per-question comparison, the SAT has 180 minutes to answer 154 questions while the ACT has 175 minutes to answer 215 questions. The ACT is 5 fewer minutes to answer 60 more questions. The comparison has more nuances than that, but the biggest problem students have on the ACT is answering all of the questions in the time allotted. TOO OFTEN, STUDENTS FOCUS ON… getting the highest grade possible rather than learning the material. They get the syllabus for an assignment and dive in to figure out how to maximize value. It’s a short-term approach that leads to cutting corners by reading an online summary instead of reading the novel. Sure, they have something they can say in the discussion; however, they don’t develop the reading comprehension skills they need. Or maybe they copy a friend’s worksheet for history instead of doing the work on their own. It’s great for the daily grade, but when the test comes, they don’t know the material. Test grades usually make up the majority of the grades, so the lack of preparation drives down the GPA.
