LETTER FROM
the editor
“you’re gonna get fed whether you like it or not.”
ADVERTISING ART DIRECTOR Laura Woodside
These words from Southlake’s Pitmaster Supreme Scott Hall to any passers-by of his Best Fans Tailgate may be few, but they carry much weight. As someone who’s had the luxury, I can honestly say the only thing Hall prides himself in more than his barbecue is the people he shares it with. Not hard to believe, I first met Scott at a monthly installment of Southlake’s infamous Rib Club somewhere close to a decade ago. Yes, even Type A barbecuers meet regularly in Southlake. To this native New Yorker Hall’s hat, football frame and gregarious smile have always been 100% Texan. And his Friday night tailgates are 100% Dragon — read about them in David Dunn’s “Titans of Tailgating.” In Colleyville, there’s another person who’s made it their mission to ensure her closest friends are fed. Lourdes McWithey started Colleyville Eats— a social media group to help area restaurants survive the TXDot turmoil that is SH 26, the city’s main thoroughfare. The city and its many restaurateurs are glad she did. And it wouldn’t be September if we didn’t do our part to highlight dining around town. We speak with a bartender, local chefs and the lady who makes Central Market shine. All while this year’s Dining Guide highlights some topnotch dining and drinking options to add to your datebook. This month I’m sure you’re gonna find something good to eat whether you like it or not.

To Get The True Dragon Football Experience
Get to know and get behind this year’s key players by reading Dragon Pride. You cheer loudest when you know whom you are cheering for. Wear green — unless it’s Pink-out Night (on October 11 this season). Pick up a few green poms for the little ones and a cowbell or two to pump up the adults.
Buy your tickets online. Time saved can be best used visiting the legendary home game tailgates. Dragon fans get really into them, like Scott Hall. See page 54 for more. Halftime is not for bathroom breaks. The band and the Emerald Belles, hot off of “America’s Got Talent,” put on performances that are not to be missed.
DAIQUIRI DASH SEPTEMBER 14 Have your fun and drink it too by running over to the Daiquiri Dash this month. This celebration of a beloved summertime drink will be more about the journey than the finish times. The day starts out with a 5K and ends with participants enjoying a free daiquiri. The day's proceeds will benefit For The Love Of Cups, an organization that supports, educates and funds advanced breast cancer screenings. Learn more in Arts & Culture.

IT CHAPTER TWO | IN THEATERS | SEPTEMBER 6 WE ALL FLOAT DOWN HERE
Pennywise the Dancing Clown returns to haunt the small town of Derry in “It Chapter Two,” the unnerving sequel to the 2017 horror film “It.” Based on Stephen King’s bone-chilling 1986 novel of the same name, “It Chapter Two” follows the Loser’s Club members 27 years after they defeated Pennywise the first time when they were children. Starring Bill Skarsgård as the titular terrifying clown and James McAvoy, Bill Hader and Jessica Chastain as the club’s older members, “It Chapter Two” concludes Stephen King’s horrifying franchise. It’s the perfect star-studded horror saga to watch in anticipation of Halloween.

ask A. . ... BARTENDER
SERVING UP DRINKS, CONVERSATIONS AND GOOD TIMES AT THE CRAFT & VINE TAPROOM AND EATERY IN ROANOKE
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE JOB? The people I work with. I don’t feel like I’m coming to work because I love coming here and seeing the people I work with. It’s kind of cheesy, but it’s kind of like one big family.
HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INTO THE BUSINESS? We had an old bartender who worked here, and I started barbacking for him on busy Friday and Saturday nights, just doing dishes. He would hand me a ticket and ask me to make an Old Fashioned. Then every week he just kept going, hand me another ticket and ask me to make another drink. It just kind of happened.
WHAT SORT OF MISCONCEPTIONS ARE THERE ABOUT BEING A BARTENDER? People think bartending is more aggressive and quickpaced, so they think we’re just out there serving drinks. But we actually love to take the time and talk to people and get to know them. That’s how we create all our regular people.
20 • SEP 19
Kiley Shaw HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A BARTENDER?
About a year and a half. I started as a server’s assistant, running food and cleaning tables for four or five months, then I went straight into it.
DOES IT EVER GET STRESSFUL DURING RUSH HOUR ON THE WEEKENDS? Absolutely. I think it’s because we’ll step on each other’s toes sometimes, and we’ll find ourselves all doing the same thing at once. So we’ll separate it. Sometimes one of us will take the bar top, one of us will take the tap row and another one of us will do cocktails. We’ll take a step back and say, ‘You do this and you do this.’ Once we get into our roles and each of our tasks, that makes it so much easier.
WHAT DOES YOUR JOB ENTAIL BESIDES SERVING DRINKS? It’s really just creating relationships. We have so many nights where our whole bar top is full of regular people who come in here. Yes, we serve drinks. But it’s also about creating conversation and creating relationships with people.

ou know he designed all this by himself,” Lourdes McWithey, founder of the Facebook group Colleyville Eats, says while sliding into a booth at The Londoner. “Barry, the owner, goes to auctions and finds all these unique pieces to put in the restaurant.” Lourdes, a Colleyville resident herself, is full of local restaurant tidbits — like who is about to open, who participates in the most spirit nights and who may need a boost during a particularly slow business quarter. She shares them in her group, Colleyville Eats, a collection of online foodies interested in supporting area restaurants specifically affected by State Highway 26’s construction.

SH26 TIMELINE
SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM
SEP 19 • 27
According to that work session held on October 28, 2014, the first discussions of improving SH26 as a whole date back to 1994, and conversations regarding the Colleyville section began in 1999. An advisory committee was created, and several meetings took place during the 2000s and 2010s that covered everything from road closures to water lines to median placements. Restaurants, along with other businesses, raised concerns during Phase 1 in 2014 on how this project would affect their livelihoods. Next Bistro’s coowner Tom Aikens attended a forum in November 2014 to discuss the accessibility of his establishment. He spoke at length about how customers who would normally drive in from nearby cities like Southlake and Trophy Club told him it was too hard to get to Next, so they stopped coming in as often. Tom couldn’t fathom how everyone would manage as plans for SH26 Phase 2 began. “How are we going to survive? Any of us?” Tom asked when his time came up on the mic during the forum, to which he was told that there would be impacts during construction, and there was no way to stop them. While Next has endured over the almost five years of construction since, it wasn’t by accident. The restaurant benefited from Tom’s very own neighborhood’s patronage.
Building Up Colleyville Eats
After starting with a slow burn in 2018, residents started sharing local reviews little by little on Colleyville Eats. Because of the growing engagement, restaurant owners soon joined the group, not only to share information about their own establishments but also to shout out neighboring restau28 • SEP 19
rants they dined at when they weren’t on the clock. “I just wanted to create a positive place where people could share their experiences,” Lourdes says. “It’s all about the community. We just want to keep sharing these experiences so that the restaurants can stay in locals’ conversations.” As more chefs and restaurateurs became active, even more locals joined Colleyville Eats to learn more about the restaurants in the area, as well as meet the faces behind them. What followed became a community hub for locals to dive into conversations about new restaurants and a safe space for comments about dining out in Colleyville. Longtime owners like Red Barn BBQ’s Von Husbands are also able to share when they need some additional support. Von posted an SOS cry on the group in August sharing that because construction was, at the time, restricting access to Red Barn, he didn’t know how much longer he could stay open. “Right now it is extremely tough in Colleyville simply because of construction,” Von says. SOUTHLAKE U8 TEAM WINS UNDER ARMOUR FLAG FOOTBALL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP A local U8 flag football team, the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors, are national champions. The team, led by coaches Shawn Mackey and Philip Odette, traveled to Los Angeles for the Under Armour National Championship, hosted on the UCLA campus, during the first weekend of August and competed against teams from across the country. But it was the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors who came out on top. The group was also invited to the Dallas Cowboys training camp on Friday, August 2, to meet the players and get a few autographs. Congratulations to the team: Beckett Nied, Luke Odette, Wyatt Smith, Preston Hines, Beckett Mackey, Banks Biggers and Mateo Gallegos. EMERALD BELLES ELIMINATED FROM ‘AMERICA’S GOT TALENT’ The Emerald Belles’ journey on “America’s Got Talent” ended after they were eliminated during the quarterfinals last month. Their journey began earlier this summer after a casting producer reached out to director Melissa Page and encouraged them to audition after stumbling onto one of their 2017 high-kick routines on YouTube. All of the judges loved their performance except for Howie Mandel, who gave the Belles their only “no” vote for their audition. The Belles performed two more times on NBC, with their latest performance even impressing Howie. Their chances of advancing were put on the line when they were placed in the “Dunkin Save,” a 30-minute live voting round where viewers could save one contestant on the verge of elimination. Viewers saved child singer Ansley Burns, while the Belles and musician Sophie Pecora were sent home. The good news is you don’t have to tune in to “America’s Got Talent” to watch these talented girls perform: You’ll have the chance to see them at every Carroll Dragons football game this season.

SOUTHLAKE FIRE DEPARTMENT RAISES RECORD-BREAKING FUNDS DURING THEIR 65TH ‘FILL THE BOOT’ CAMPAIGN The Southlake Fire Department filled their boots to the brim this year, not with sand or water, but with cold hard cash. The 65th annual “Fill The Boot” took place in July when Southlake firefighters went out to the community to collect money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, a nonprofit organization that helps fund medical research for muscular dystrophy and other diseases. In 2018, the Southlake Fire Department raised a record-setting $55,698.14 for MDA research. This year, they exceeded that record by over $10,000, with their total earnings amounting to $66,143. Southlake Fire Prevention Officer Renni Burt coordinated the campaign between the Fire Department and MDA for the past 10 years. Every year, she watches as firefighters work through the sweltering heat to collect funds for MDA research and relief. She expresses how often she is impressed with not only the department’s extraneous efforts but also how much money they manage to collect. Burt loves seeing how the department’s hard work goes to benefit the families in Tarrant County who need it most.

SOUTHLAKE DPS COLLABORATES WITH TEXAS RANGERS’ HUNTER PENCE IN NEW VIDEO A few Southlake police officers rocked a new look in a department-produced video last month. On August 5, Southlake DPS posted a video featuring Texas Rangers’ designated hitter Hunter Pence as well as his iconic socks. The baseball player, known to wear his socks a little higher than other athletes, collaborated with Southlake DPS to show off the various services the department oversees. Southlake DPS’ Public Information Officer Brad Uptmore says he has been a fan of Pence for years and was excited to team up to create the video. “We ordered like a box of socks and filmed everything before we could even ask if [Pence] would help us, as we wanted to show we were committed to making it and how it would look,” Uptmore says. “We finally settled on a date and time, and his part only took about 15 minutes to film — he was a natural!” While Pence has more experience playing than acting on camera, Uptmore says he embraced his role and helped create a memorable video. Pence was not the only star in the department’s video. Southlake Police Chief James Brandon also made a cameo. Uptmore was happy with the final product as he said it helped showcase what the department takes on every day.

After graduating from Carroll Senior High School, Alexander went on to play college ball for the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs. After his sophomore year, the Tigers drafted him in the second round of the MLB Draft. He debuted with the team earlier this year during their game against the White Sox on July 3. Alexander came full circle when he pitched in Arlington on Friday, August 3. The Texas Rangers ended up with the win, however, with a final score of 5-4. LITTLE HELPERS HOST LEMONADE STAND AS PART OF THEIR FIRST KINDNESS WEEK Thanks to the family volunteer group Little Helpers, local kids are proving their actions can make a difference. And they did just that on July 23 when they set up their first lemonade stand outside of Southlake’s Toy Maven hoping to raise donations for the Humane Society of North Texas. The lemonade stand was a part of a larger Kindness Camp hosted by Little Helpers. That Monday, the group gathered at Palio’s Pizza Café in Colleyville to make dog and cat toys for animals at local shelters. A day after the lemonade stand, Little Helpers ventured out to Lake Grapevine to clean up the park and do some yoga to make it fun for everyone. The Kindness Camp continued into Thursday when the kids made cards for refugees studying at a school in Greece and on Friday when they created kindness rocks to plant around the community. The week concluded on Saturday when Little Helpers partnered with RAICES, a nonprofit that offers free and low-cost legal services to immigrant children, families and refugees, to create bracelets for the children on the southern border. The chapter's volunteer coordinator Michelle Carter says she hopes to teach children of all ages the importance of helping others. Little Helper’s Dallas-Fort Worth chapter was founded a little over a year ago once Michelle moved to the area. Michelle was a part of the Memphis chapter, where Little Helpers originated, before moving to Texas, and she wanted to bring their mission to the Metroplex. SOUTHLAKE POLICE OFFICER RECEIVES MADD AWARD One Southlake police officer received special recognition during the 2019 Tarrant County Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Award Luncheon on July 24. Officer Nikki Lockwood received an Enforcement Hero Award, which honors the dedication to DWI enforcement. Officer Lockwood always knew she wanted to give back. For a long time, she thought that meant enrolling in the military. But after the Dallas shooting in 2016, which killed several officers, Lockwood says she felt compelled to join the police and be a part of changing perception of local law enforcement. Officer Lockwood has been active in the department since January 2018 when she completed her academy training. Since, she has taken her role and responsibility very seriously. According to MySouthlakeNews.com, the Southlake Police Department made a total of 134 DWI arrests during the 2018 calendar year. Officer Lockwood made 18 percent of those arrests. By staying alert, both on the road and increasing her knowledge on the subject by reading the latest case law about drunk driving, Officer Lockwood is ensuring the entire city is safer.

elebrity Cruises is charging full-speed ahead of its $500 million revolution. It all started with the debut of its 1,000-foot luxury cruise ship Celebrity Edge in November. Now, it continues with the launch of the revolutionary Celebrity Flora, a 100-guest mega-yacht that will connect travelers to their destinations like never before. “Every once in a while, a unique ship comes along in the industry and changes things,” says Richard Fain, Royal Caribbean Cruises chairman and CEO. “Celebrity Flora is that ship.” The 50-suite luxury cruise is the first of its kind to be designed and built specifically for its destination hotspot: the Galapagos Islands. With its outward-facing concept, full room automation, 24-hour room service and personal suite attendants, Celebrity Flora is especially suited for the fullest enjoyment of your exquisite cruise, immersing you in your off-shores adventure rather than merely visiting it. Top that off with the Flora’s increased sustainability and cutting-edge oceanographic technology, and you have a ship that is just as environmentally friendly as it is relaxing and upper-class. “Our guests have never seen a destination quite like the beautiful Galapagos Islands, and the islands have never seen a ship quite like Celebrity Flora, perfectly blending intimate luxury with sustainability,” Celebrity Cruises President and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo says. “The ship is designed to showcase this amazing destination, giving our guests incredible memories and underscoring the critical importance of protecting our planet’s fragile ecosystems.” But the Galapagos Islands is not the only adventure destination that Celebrity Cruises are offering. The Celebrity Reflection and the Celebrity Silhouette is also offering inner and outer loop cruises for Iceland and Antarctica respectively. With over
2,880 occupancies and over 20 delightful dining options, both the Celebrity Reflection and Silhouette offer several fantastic on-deck entertainment options on the way to your destinations. One thing the Iceland and Antarctica cruises offer beyond the Galapagos Islands, however, is its venturous excursions. The Iceland cruise offers a variety of pub and baking tours, and the Antarctica cruise has several sightseeing excursions across Buenos Aires and Iguazu National Park. “It’s not your grandparent’s cruise,” regional marketing manager Letitia Johnson says. “It’s very much life-changing. This is something that people are choosing to do because they just want to get on a ship, go to signature destinations and do what they want to do on land or ship.” With new ships, new places and exciting expeditions, there’s plenty to experience over at Celebrity Cruises. Hop aboard, and catch your next out-at-sea adventure today.

TITANS of TAILGATING BEST FANS TAILGATE builds the ultimate Dragon pregame
B Y D AV I D D U N N W I T H P H OTO S BY EMILEE PRADO
54 • SEP 19
I
t’s 45 minutes to kickoff. Parents and the Southlake Carroll Dragon Band fill the stands, Carroll Cheer chants by the sidelines and the Dragons prepare to run out and take the field. Meanwhile, outside Dragon Stadium, young kids throw their own footballs in the parking lot, music blasts on the stereos and the smoky smell of freshly cooked brisket and barbecue spreads through the air. Through all of the smiles, laughter and full bellies, Scott Hall, the man behind the grill, looks out proudly at what he and several other Dragon parents have built together. “It’s become a real tradition for us over at Dragon Stadium,” Hall expresses. “People want to be there and want to be a part of it.” SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE
Although Scott didn’t start the Best Fans Tailgate group, he’s helped grow and expand it well beyond its original attendance numbers. Back when it first started over 18 years ago, only a couple of parents came together in the neighborhood to put on their own tailgates. Now the Best Fans Tailgate accumulates around a 100 participants every game, with more joining every season. FROM THE AGGIES TO THE DRAGONS Scott’s tailgating story extends way beyond the 15 years he’s been cooking for Best Fans Tailgate. When he was a teenager, he learned how to smoke, grill and cook everything under the sun by watching his uncle, who Scott says was a better cook than he is. “He smoked briskets; he had fish fries; he knew how to do ribs on the smoker,” Scott recalls fondly. “I was hanging around with him and my dad, and kind of learned how to do it from him and continued to do it through college.” As a passionate Texas A&M Aggie, Scott spent more of his fair share of time at games and tailgates. He fondly recalls memories in the back of a truck, sitting with his friends, playing music out of his dashboard radio and grilling hot dogs while drinking a beer. . “I’m a big sports guy,” he chuckles. “I love to have a good time, get together with people. That’s what got me into it.” After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in industrial distribution, Scott immediately went to work in the diesel industry, which eventually led him and his wife Casey to move to Southlake in 1997. Scott’s still an Aggie at heart; he and Casey have been season ticket holders ever since 1989. Still, he quickly found a new football home in Southlake, discovering that his neighbors held the same kind of passion for the Carroll Dragons as he did for the Aggies. It wasn’t until Scott met the founders of Best Fan Tailgate, however, that he put his skills on full display in Southlake. BEST FANS’ BEGINNINGS Carroll ISD mothers Shirland Pike and Christie Johnson started hosting tailgates with their husbands Bob and Kirk when the stadium first opened in 2001. Back then, their daughters were going through Carroll High School, and the families were within walking distance of the new stadium. So that’s exactly what they usually ended up doing after their tailgates on Friday nights. “We would take one of those tiny Smokey Joe grills and cook bratwursts out of them,” Christie expresses. “That was our first little tailgate when they opened the new stadium. We bought a car flag pole and the Dragon flag, and that began to draw attention.” Christie says her husband Kirk gave her a Carroll Dragon personalized license plate for Christmas that reads “BSTFAN.” That was where the name, Best Fans Tailgate, came from. “When we started winning and making the playoffs, more people started coming to join the tailgate,” Christie recalls. “The playoff tailgates started to gain steam and grew each year. If we had an early morning game

at the old Cowboy Stadium, we would make breakfast tacos. It just started growing. The whole town was swept up in Dragon football. It was a magical time.” Scott was among one of the first friends to join in on the tailgating fun. He and his wife weren’t always able to come around due to having younger kids, but they soon found themselves more involved as both their kids and the tailgates continued to grow. “Everybody that came was in a three-block radius,” Scott recalls. “We probably had about half a dozen families whenever we first started.” Scott soon gradually found himself getting more involved with the event to the point of becoming its game day cook. From then on, Christie says attendance for the Best Fans Tailgate skyrocketed. “One day he brought a bigger grill, and we really started growing,” Christie explains. “We decided it was time to up our game.” FOOD, FOOTBALL AND FELLOWSHIP Taking the cooking reigns for Best Fans Tailgate was natural for Scott. Not only did he upgrade the tailgate’s cooking capabilities from a grill to a sleek black smoker big enough to hold eight briskets but also he brought out a trailer complete with two 50inch TVs, a satellite stereo, Blu-ray player, a microwave and a bathroom. They even have their own eight-foottall blowup Dragon football player the team affectionately nicknamed “Evan.” They’ve also incorporated more elaborate menus and themes for every week’s game. Most of the time they’ll serve the typical tailgate meal such as brats 56 • SEP 19
and hot dogs. But on occasion, Scott says they’ll go all out and serve three folding tables worth of something really special such as brisket, fajitas, fried fish or boiled shrimp. “We’re in the same spot every time,” Scott says. “If someone comes walking up asking, ‘What’re y’all doing here?’, they’re getting fed. They’ll have this giant plate and be like ‘I already had my meal before I came up here.’ Doesn’t matter. You’re gonna get fed whether you like it or not.” After they’re done serving the brunt of their buffet, Scott says they’ll turn off the smoker, lock up the trailer, then head in to the game. “My family and I will do the Dragons on Friday night, and then we go to the A&M home games as well on the same weekend,” Scott explains. “You don’t do the back-to-backs too often. It’s a lot of fun, but it’s a lot of work too.” Scott says they make it a point to go to every Dragon game, whether it’s during the playoffs or the regular season. In the case of away games, Scott says they’ll take their act on the road, hitching up the trailer and towing it to wherever they’re going. He says they’ve been everywhere from Houston and San Antonio to the AT&T Stadium in Arlington and The Star in Frisco. He says they’re even looking ahead at an away game in Odessa later this year. In the past four years that he’s been doing this, Scott says they have missed only one away game in Abilene due to a family conflict. “I was disappointed we missed that one,” he muses. ON THE DRAGON’S ROAD Scott says one of the biggest misconceptions some people have on the Best Fans Tailgate is how difficult it is to organize. Game after game, everybody who participates brings something to share with the rest of the tailgaters in attendance. Christie herself always brings sausage balls and brownies during the regular season while Shirland would always bring appetizer dishes. That leaves Scott to worry about the main entrée, which to him is a joy to prepare. “People have asked if it’s too big or too hard to handle,” Scott says. “It’s really not. Part of the secret to making the thing a success is to get people involved. If one or two people have to carry it all, then it becomes kind of a burden for them, no matter how much they enjoy it. But if you have a group of 10 families who are your core and you can count on them to get the ice, or the paper plates and all that kind of stuff, then it’s not that hard of a deal. That’s an easy sell. The biggest investment is time.” Scott says it’s gotten so prominent to the point that the kids who were throwing Frisbees and playing cornhole when the tailgate first started are now bringing their own kids to enjoy the Best Fans Tailgate. “Never did I think it would turn into something as big as this has over the years,” Shirland says. “We kind of thought that when our daughters graduated, we didn’t know how much we would keep doing that. It just kept growing and growing.” Now Shirland’s grandson and Scott’s son are enrolled in Carroll High School. All three of Christie’s children have already graduated from Carroll ISD, but that doesn’t mean she finds herself less involved in the Best Fans Tailgate. “We moved to Southlake to be part of a community, and that's what Friday night is all about,” Christie expresses. “It's not just about the football team. Our friends supported our kids while they were in school, and now it's our turn to do the same.” Scott says he isn’t sure what he’ll be doing after his youngest daughter goes through the school system and graduates in 2026. But more likely than not, he’ll be behind the smoker grilling during his next Texas-sized tailgate spread. “We’re not going to slow down, that’s for sure,” Scott chuckles. “It never really changes. It just gets bigger.” The Best Fans’ Tailgate has already kicked off the season with a bang, with the Carroll Dragon’s first home game against the South Grand Prarie Warriors held August 30 at Dragon Stadium. Hungry fans can be a part of the action by stopping by before the next game at the center of the parking lot directly north of the press box, where the Best Fans Tailgate will be waiting with smoky flavors and a warm greeting for their fellow Dragons.

Wine Without The Wait This High-tech Electrical Decanter Prepares Varietals In A Pinch DETAILS Breville Sommelier Price: $499.95 Dimensions: 7.75" x 9.5" x 14.5" 25-fluid-ounces carafe Williams-Sonoma.com

atching wine decant can often feel like a waste of time. You find a great bottle that you’re excited to taste, but before you can enjoy it, you have to wait hours until it opens up and reaches its peak. Now, thanks to some new technology and an innovative design from Breville, vino lovers can enjoy their favorite vintages sooner. The SommelierTM works smarter, not harder, so all you have to do is pour your bottle into it and wait a few minutes. This specially designed decanter sends 90% pure oxygen through its central column and into the carafe’s base, which exposes every drop of the wine to oxygen quicker. And its flow provides an even exposure so all the wine receives the same amount of oxygen. This improved oxygenation speeds up aeration time, so one minute in the SommelierTM is comparable to an hour of traditional decanting.
64 • SEP 19
To get your wine just right, set the SommelierTM timer to the recommendation listed in the booklet included with the product. The resource lists a wide range of varietals, so you will know exactly how much time is needed for your bottle. You can also download the iFavine Mini app to search for decanting times based on the country, region, varietal and vintage of your wine. There are more than 3 million labels in their online database. This high-tech design also eliminates the impurities that can often affect wine during traditional decanting. The controlled environment protects your vintage from moisture, dust and any odors that can defect the taste, all without using chemicals. The SommelierTM not only works on wine but also on your other valuable spirits. The smaller carafe, which holds 7 fluid ounces, will breathe life into your favorite whiskeys or cognacs in no time. So pick up the add-on if you enjoy an array of boozy beverages.

Love Letter To Latin America
Hip New Resaturant Shakes Up Dallas’ Harwood District
T
Te Deseo 2700 Olive St. Dallas 214.646.1314 TeDeseoDallas.com
68 • SEP 19
e Deseo, the latest eatery to open in Dallas’ Harwood District, created quite the buzz last month after opening its doors on August 7. The 14,000-square-foot restaurant promised to provide quality dining in an extravagant space with a bustling, social environment, and Te Deseo sure delivered. After taking in the gleaming exterior, walking through the interior — past a fullsized tree and cozy yet colorful seating options — and glancing over the menu, guests will start to feel further away from Dallas and transported to a new dining destination thanks to the restaurant’s energy. “We want people to feel like they have immediately escaped the ordinary,” Ste-
phen Bello, Senior Vice President of Harwood Hospitality Group, says. “Greeted with a warm welcome, guests will immediately feel the high energy of Te Deseo that will get them excited for a great night ahead.” After settling in, guests can start to get a feel for the night ahead by peering over the signature cocktails. The menu includes lavish options like the Brazillionaire, Ypióca Cachaça, Licor 43, lemon, guava and bubbles, which is accented with artificial bills. The bar also offers an impressive number of specialty tequilas and mezcals — more than 100! Each of the restaurant’s four bars also offers a signature house shot of resposado tequila called the Chupito de la Casa, a oneof-a-kind specialty blend of tequila exclusively selected by the restaurant’s founders.

LOCALFLAVOR review
Or, if everyone wants to drink the same thing, guests can order a batch of some classic cocktails for the table, like Havana’s Majito, Diplomático Mantuano Rum, lemongrass, Topo Chico, mint and lime, and the Te Deseo Margarita, Lunazul Blano Tequila, Jack Fruit Cordial, lime and house orange bitters. The dinner menu acts as an accumulation of various Latin cuisines with the biggest influences coming from Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Peru. Executive chef Ty Thaxton used his experience cooking in the region to blend these cuisines together, creating a harmonious menu that spotlights several countries’ prominent dishes and flavors. “Te Deseo developed as our love letter to Latin America,” Bello says. “The region and the culture embodies excitement, mystery and bonding over food and drink.” To help create that love letter and to fully embody the cuisine’s culture, Te Deseo’s founders voyaged throughout the region to see what components they wanted to integrate into the menu. “We spent months traveling around Latin America, perfecting our wood-fire cooking techniques, and creating our own one-of-a-kind reposado tequila that we call our Chupito de la Casa,” Bello says. “We even learned how to salsa dance.” The final result is a dynamic menu offering a range of intricate dishes. It’s easy for diners to find familiar favorites — like elote and queso — as well as bold flavor combinations unlike anything they have tried before — like Peruvian-style sashimi featuring tuna and yellow tail. The menu emphasizes sharing with both small and family-style plates making up most of the offerings, which is Te Desero’s way of inviting their guests to take small steps out of their typical taste comfort zones and experiment with their array of options. That communal environment makes stand-out options like the Stuffed Arepas, filled with pulled roasted chicken, green chiles, crema and fresno peppers, and the Arroz Chaufa, garlic rice, carnitas, shrimp, zucchini, roasted corn, peppers, scallion and fried egg, more approachable. “We offer everything from familiar Tex-Mex dishes to Argentinian steak dishes! There is truly something for everyone,” Bello says. “Te Deseo’s creations are meant to be shared and enjoyed with no boundaries.” After polishing off your plate and enjoying a traditional dessert, like the housemade flan, guests can take in views of the city on the rooftop bar. Whether you order another cocktail or just look out on Dallas’ skyline, it’s the perfect way to round out a night out in the big city.

Classics With A Twist
Kunsei Smokehouse Delivers Tex-Asian Dining Across Fort Worth Colleyville’s Trio New American offers dynamic dishes to diners interested in seeing how different cuisines play together on the plate. Owner and executive chef Jason Harper continues that initiative in Fort Worth with his latest project. Kunsei Smokehouse, a Tex-Asian food trailer, started making pop-up appearances at different breweries in July. It’s grown a following, both locally and across the Metroplex, thanks to the innovative integration of ingredients into Southern favorites. “It’s very familiar Texas barbecue with really unique Asian flavors,” Jason explains. “I mean I love barbecue. If you are a Texan, you have to love barbecue.” Kunsei, which means smoke in Japanese, leans on barbecue techniques to enhance Asian ingredients in comfort food mains and sides. Customers will find those classic go-to dishes like brisket, mac ’n’ cheese and creamed corn, but they will be served with bright, bold Asian components like miso and kimchi. “I honestly can’t say I’ve found Texan smokiness to clash with anything,” Jason says, “People don’t think about these flavors going well together, but then they taste it and say, ‘It’s a match made in heaven.’” Jason has played with various ingredient combinations during his 10 years at Trio, but he says he has continuously been inspired to learn more about Asian cuisines — from Japanese and Chinese to Vietnamese and Thai. “That’s really where my passion lies,” Jason says. “I have been tumbling down that rabbit hole for years.” Kunsei was a hit during its launch service at Rar & Sons Brewing Company last July and continued the service in August at Martin House Brewing Company’s beer launch. Locals can find Kunsei next at HopFusion Ale Works on September 4. Jason hopes to open a brick-and-mortar Kunsei in Fort Worth eventually, but until then, he wants to introduce the concept to locals while also continuing to play with flavor fusions. So if you already love Trio and want to see a new side of Jason, be sure to swing by Kunsei Smokehouse. You may be able to say you knew Jason way back when after Kunsei Smokehouse becomes a notable eatery in the Metroplex. Kunsei Smokehouse 817.719.8334

a new side of Fort Worth For those familiar with the ride over to Texas Christian University, a trip down University Drive looks a lot different now than it did even three years ago. You’ll still pass the iconic Ol’ South Pancake House and the Fort Worth Zoo off I-30W, but you’ll also drive by the budding WestBend district. This area boasts both shopping and dining opportunities that bring out crowds. There is plenty to see and explore, but we’ve rounded up a few new reasons to make the trip to Fort Worth.

A beloved Oklahoma City bookstore announced earlier this year that it would open a yearlong pop-up store in Fort Worth. Now it’s connecting people looking for unique books and small goods in WestBend. Locals can wander around as they browse the store’s selection. It’s a great way to slow down with your special someone and invest in a new pastime. Whether you window-shop before dinner or find a bestseller the two of you can read together, a date involving an intimate bookstore sounds like a win in our book. CommonplaceBooksOKC.com

For a coastal dining experience featuring delicious street food, walk over to bartaco. The brightly decorated eatery with whitewashed walls serves up everything from tacos to rice bowls to street corn fritters. On a hot day, their Gazpacho — a chilled tomato-based soup with onions, Poblano peppers, red bell peppers, cucumbers, croutons and olive oil — acts as a nice refresher. While the Roasted Duck Tacos with a tamarind glaze are sure to appease your appetite. Guests can choose to enjoy their Tex-Mex creations on a four-inch corn tortilla or a bibb lettuce shell for a healthier alternative. These creations are best served with a delicious cocktail, like the Paloma Fresca made with libelula joven, grapefruit, lime, Peychaud’s bitters, grapefruit bitters and sparkling water. The combination will leave you more than satisfied. bartaco.com

Round out your night with a sweet from an adorable bakery by walking over to Susie Cakes. The vibrant storefront offers everything from cakes and cookies to puddings and pies. But for a treat that you can take on the go, try the Carrot Cake Cupcake. This moist confectionery is filled and topped with cream cheese frosting. Susie Cakes also offers mini-cupcakes in an assortment of flavors, so you can always order several if you can’t decide which to choose. And because they are smaller, you can feel better about eating two — or three. SusieCakes.com

SOUTHLAKE’S CENTRAL MARKET ART LEAD TAKES US BEHIND THE SCENES OF CREATING THE STORE’S SIGNAGE
W
hile wandering through the aisles of Southlake’s Central Market, customers’ eyes are drawn to several of the store’s artistic elements. Whether it’s a colorful new chalkboard or a gigantic replica of a piece of produce, there’s a lot to take in. That’s thanks to the in-house art team led by Grapevine painter Whitley Minter. After joining the Southlake Central Market’s art team two years ago, Whitley started creating innovative and dynamic pieces that make an impact, including everything from an enlarged Scoville scale to an oversized 3D burger. But she says it’s those new projects that keep her creative juices flowing.
I WAS ALWAYS . . . drawn to painting. When I was a kid, that’s really what I got for Christmas and birthdays — just lots of arts and crafts. One year, my mom got me a container that you put the different nuts and bolts in from Lowe’s, and she filled it with glue sticks and puff paint and googly eyes. It was my most favorite gift I’ve ever gotten. From a young age, I always wanted to create. I REALLY DIDN’T THINK . . . it was realistic to pursue art as a career. That’s why I chose to go to school for hair. But what I love about this job is that it specifically does not put you in a box. There’s so much opportunity to explore different mediums and do different things. It really fulfills that need to create on all levels. EVERY CENTRAL MARKET STORE . . . is different. Your GMs are different. And [Central Market President] Stephen Butt has an expectation of uniqueness for each store. You have to figure out what he’s looking for, which is constantly changing. There is always something new with all our events and the artwork we get sent from division changes. I HAVE . . . two artists who work for me when we have events. They are really invested and committed. It took us a while to find the right artists for this store, but I’m really happy with our team. I think at most stores each artist specializes in one thing. So I would say my thing is painting. Then we have Shelby who is a really great illustrator. She did something for our beer and wine wall recently. The department came to us and said, “We want you to cartoon our beer and wine team members on these chalkboards on the beer and wine wall.” It was something I could not have done, but Shelby said she could do it. And I was, like, “Yeah, you can.” And Eric is into graphic design, but he can also do things by hand. So he has that mix and is tech-savvy. He is super fast. They all bring so much to the table. Individually, we could not do it all. I definitely need them.
MY FAVORITE PART OF THE JOB . . . is that we really aren’t limited here. Stephen is an extravagant person, so he really likes for each store to step outside the box. He wants to really see that there are different artists at each store and that we aren’t all shooting for the exact same ideas. A LOT OF US . . . really like making oversized food items. So there was a large piece of bread that was in the bakery that was like 4 foot by 8 foot. Bread sitting in front of you may not be that interesting, but when you scale it that big, there are so many little details that make it more fun. I had also made a 3D pie piece, which was really my first papier-mâché project I had done. I got to play with different mediums, like I used some clear caulking to glaze my pecans. WHEN I FIRST STARTED THE JOB . . . I’d get sad when we were replacing these projects because you get attached to everything. But we’ve made hundreds of signs. I couldn’t even guess. We probably make about 20 signs for each event. We have two weeks to make these 20 signs, and do chalkboards and do printer requests, so we really have to figure out how to make it interesting sometimes without always going into immense detail. It’s about the art and doing a good job but also productivity and putting a lot of things out. PEOPLE ARE CONSTANTLY . . . coming up and talking to us when we are on the floor. And the kids think it’s really cool. I love that, because I have kids, and I love that I’ve found a job that is unique. I want to be, like, you can do what you love and grow up and be really happy with your job. MY FIANCÉ WORKS . . . at Sur La Table, so we are both big foodies. So that’s literally all we do. We hang out, watch sports and cook food. Our go-to restaurant is Thai Tip. And we like Lava Asian Grill. It’s right by our house. They have really good wings! They tell you, you have to wait 20 minutes for these wings, and we are like yeah, we will wait. Put the order in.

Fumbling Through Football Season
Fun Escapism To Get Away From The Sports
F
ootball season is back whether you’re a fan or not. That means the blistering heat will continue to beat down on the field, beer and soft drinks are set to slush around in the seats and the cheers and boos of passionate fans will fill stadiums everywhere. But while many sports spectators eagerly await this season each year, others may be turned off to the scene. Not to worry. If you’re unenthusiastically dragged to an away game this fall, these football towns also feature options to get away. In these cities, even the fans may agree that the sights off the field are more promising than watching the game.

Detroit, Michigan
Detroit Lions fans have had a tough run. Besides being one of the few NFL teams that haven’t made it to the Super Bowl, their last regular season was a bust as they finished 6-10. This put them in dead last in the NFC North. But if you find yourself in Detroit to see the Cowboys spar off with the Lions, there’s more than just football to help fill your days. The city also boasts three 24/7 Vegas-style casinos for those looking for a thrill off the field. For a more soothing experience, take in the sights via one of the city’s riverboat or yacht tours, or swap out a pregame for one of Motor City’s brew and wine tours to sample fresh Mo-

town drinks. If you are looking for some classic entertainment, forget the Lions and be entertained by a different kind of feline during Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Cats.” The musical production is staged at Fisher Theater and runs through September 15. VisitDetroit.com
Jacksonville, Florida Speaking of cats, the Jacksonville Jaguars have lost more games than they have won in the past eight seasons. Luckily, Jacksonville is home to more than 22 miles of beaches, beautifully preserved urban parks and boutique neighborhoods that are perfect for sightseeing. Enjoy several coastal cuisines as well, with many delightful bistros, fish camps and more staple restaurants available right on the shoreline. You could visit one of the city’s several historical multicultural hotspots, including the Ritz Theatre and Museum, which was constructed on the site of the Ritz Theater movie house in 1929, or the American Beach on the south end of Amelia Island. You could also explore Jacksonville’s vibrant arts scene, and check out one of the more than 30 large-scale murals throughout the city. No matter where you go in Jacksonville, you’re sure to find a good time far away from the shouting matches in the football stadium. VisitJacksonville.com
Cleveland, Ohio While the Cleveland Browns have a promising quarterback in Baker Mayfield, who helped lead the team last year to its best finish since 2007 with a 7-8-1 record, the Browns’ winning history is rocky at best. They lost all 16 games in the 2017 regular season, only the second NFL team to do so since the Detroit Lions’ 0-16 in 2008. In the event that Mayfield is benched, there’s more to discover in Cleveland beyond the FirstEnergy Stadium. Look around the iconic Rock and Roll Hall of Fame downtown, catch a thrilling roller coaster ride at Cedar Point Amusement Park or traverse through the topsy-turvy Adventure City inside the Children’s Museum of Cleveland. If you want to slow down and relax, stroll through the vibrant and gorgeous Cleveland Botanical Garden founded in 1930 or visit the famous Parker house from the 1980s movie “A Christmas Story.” Either way, you’ll spend your day enjoying a fun-filled adventure that’s a safe distance from the onslaught of sports fans who are up in arms because the referee made a bad call. in 500 The Importance Of Nannies, From The Perspective Of A Nanny And A Mom
S
how up early. Stay late. Work nights. Diapers. Spit up... Nannies are behind the scenes holding it all together. Often nannies are there to see those first steps or be there for moments of sheer bliss when a child accomplishes something amazing. The role of a nanny is multifaceted. Nannies not only meet your kids’ basic needs but we educate, guide and love them. That makes all the difference. Many may view the role of nanny as a side job or a way to support one’s self through college, but there are a whole bunch of us who are passionate about caring, educating and loving our clients’ children. In addition to childcare, some nannies also juggle other household management duties such as taking care of pets, preparing meals, making homemade baby food, stocking the home with essentials, coordinating lawn care, maintaining the pool and keeping house. The job can be demanding, but at the end of the day, it’s so rewarding. I am a mother of three boys and have been a career nanny for the past 12 years. When I was asked to nanny for my first family in 2003, I never dreamed it would become my passion. My nanny jobs have taken me to different cities and countries and have given me so much experience and many great memories. This summer, I hired my first nannies: three sisters who teamed up to take care of my sons while I worked — as a nanny! I get a lot of sur-
prised looks when I share this, but being a nanny is my job, no different than a teacher hiring a nanny to care for her kids while she teaches. I am here to say that without my nannies, I could not have done my job. I rely on them 100% as much as my employers rely on me. National Nanny Appreciation Week is September 2228, and it may be the perfect time to honor your nanny. There are different ways to do it. One of my families gave me a spa day. The idea of being pampered when I should have been working made me feel a little guilty, but then I realized how nice it was to relax. A gift card can be a great way to treat your nanny to his favorite restaurant or stock her book collection. And everyone loves a gift card to Target or Amazon, right? You can also help your nanny practice healthy habits by offering to pay for a gym membership. It’s a great way to remind your nanny to take care of him- or herself. Kids can also join in by creating handmade gifts and notes. Nannies are sure to treasure these presents. Or, you can offer to send your nanny to the International Nanny Association Conference to show you care about his or her career. So, nannies of Southlake and beyond, thank you for all you do. You know we parents could not manage without you on our team.

Island Living
ountertop space is king in the kitchen. Whether you are prepping for an upcoming soirée, showing off your small appliances or just trying to keep all your cooking accessories organized, expanding your counters can open up new design opportunities in your home. And one of the best ways to do that is adding on a large island. This home upgrade can do everything from provide a casual dining arrangement to modernize the look of your high-tech appliances. It may seem like a small change, but this addition can make a big difference in the feel of the heart of your home.
HEATING THINGS UP For those eager to jump into a remodel, a kitchen island can also be the home for your bigger appliances. Instead of keeping your stovetop pushed to the wall, place yours in the center of the room with the help of your new island. Before jumping into this project, make sure your island is big enough to hold the heat source and you have room to install a hood over the stovetop. But the final result can be an ultra-modern kitchen that stands ready for your next dinner party. Adding a built-in wine fridge or ice maker in place of an island cabinet can also be a good way to make the most of the extra space.
GRAB A SEAT Not all meals need to take place in an elaborate setting. Rather than enjoying a quick breakfast in the dining room, add a few sleek stools to your kitchen island to create a relaxed environment the whole family can enjoy. For those installing islands for the first time, build yours with a slight overhang so your seating can be tucked neatly into place when unoccupied. Or for those looking to refresh their kitchen’s current design, opt for stools without backs. While some may enjoy the extra support, this clean alternative ensures the lines in your room remain intact.
WASH IT ALL DOWN For those who want to make the most out of their sink space, islands are the perfect locale to enhance your kitchen’s function and style. To create a seamless look, an undermount sink provides that effortless but classic feel. But to make a statement, why not try an oldie but a goodie model? An apron-front sink, often found in homes with farmhouse interiors, can add a focal point into your kitchen while also adding a new texture into the space. A pop of white porcelain with your sink is a great way to brighten up any dark counters.
