I’m delighted to think back to the many charitable community endeavors, organizations and events we’ve been a part of during our 13 years in business. Some have come and gone, but so many more, like next month’s Art in the Square, have woven themselves into the fabric of our city. I’m quite sure there are no more auctions, luncheons and galas per capita than on the beloved stretch of 1709 we call home. With so many charity golf tournaments we’ve even resorted to holding them at night. Yes, GRACE’s Drive into the Night uses glow in the dark golf balls! And last month we celebrated the Distilled Gentlemen, a group of suburban bourbonites who paired their single-malt habit into a $26,000 charitable donation. No doubt about it: We know how to have a good time and give back in the process. Southlake kids give back too — we’ve covered those who have baked cakes, made lemonade, gathered teddy bears and even written books to help support others in need. According to CISD, the student body of 2018 alone was credited with 68,000 hours of community service! That’s more than eight hours for every single Dragon K-12 — are you kidding me?! In “Five Minutes With,” Lindy Calzada, the coordinator of Volunteer Southlake, credits her direct volunteers with 28,000 hours of community service to the city. The list keeps going on. What’s more impressive is when Southlake kids start charities that continue to thrive into their adult lives. As a young teen, Emily Avedikian started Keeps Boutique to boost the self-esteem of young girls in foster care. A decade and a Baylor degree later, she’s still uplifting those around her with the spirit of giving that is so much a part of our home.

DIRTY JOHN PODCAST “One of the top myths about abuse and crisis is, 'If she is in such a bad place, why wouldn’t she just leave?' This podcast tells the true and raw story of how difficult and complicated it can be to leave a toxic relationship. Debra Newell, who represents one of thousands of women, faces confusion and fear when she is blackmailed and trapped by John Meehan. This story will help the listener gain empathy and insight into a victim’s and abuser’s mindset during this time.” – Emily Avedikian, founder of Keeps Boutique

GIRL, STOP APOLOGIZING RACHEL HOLLIS MARCH 12 Your Favorite Motivational Author is Back Rachel Hollis, the author of “New York Time’s” bestseller “Girl, Wash Your Face” is at it again, motivating women everywhere by tearing down lies that are often all too believable. Hollis’ writing style is casual, often humorous and makes your reading experience feel more like a chat over coffee with girlfriends. By sharing her own story of small-town girl turned CEO, Hollis makes things personal…really personal. From business owner to wife to mother, she admits to believing every lie in the book and uses that experience to help women reach their full potentials. Prepare to be talked back into that dream you talked yourself out of ages ago.

CAPTAIN MARVEL IN THEATERS MARCH 8 If You Enjoyed 'Wonder Woman,' You’re Going to Love This

JANE THE VIRGIN, SEASON 5 THE CW MARCH 27 Warning: Major Spoilers Ahead If you aren’t all caught up on America’s favorite telenovela-style drama, avert your eyes. The final season premieres in March, and it has a lot of loose ends to wrap up. Jane’s (Gina Rodriguez) journey started in season one as a 23-year-old virgin who was accidentally artificially inseminated. The storyline only gets crazier from there. Last year, season four left audiences in shock as Jane’s longtime love, who has been presumed dead after a tragic shooting, reappears. This recreates a love triangle that has been enticing fans since the show’s first episode. The identity of the show’s beloved narrator will also be revealed, and we can only imagine that it will be “like something out of a telenovela.”

Get ready for some serious girl power as “Captain Marvel” hits the big screen. This film marks the first female-led superhero film to come out of Marvel Studios. The movie’s namesake “Captain Marvel” is Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), a former U.S. Air Force fighter pilot. She joins Starforce, an elite Kree military team, and becomes one of the galaxy’s most powerful heroes as the Earth is in conflict with two alien worlds. Larson is joined by starpower in Samuel L. Jackson and Jude Law, among many others. This action-packed thriller is set in 1995, so prepare for some nostalgia along the way.

Emily Avedikian Has Committed More Than A Decade To Helping Women Find Their Power Outfits

BY AS H L E Y M A D O N N A P H OTO S BY B LU D O O R ST U D I O S

A

s an advocate for boosting local women’s self-esteem, Emily Avedikian knows confidence can stem from a wide range of places. As the founder of Keeps Boutique, a nonprofit clothier housed on The Gatehouse property, Emily works one-on-one with her clients to ensure they have the necessary tools to walk with a sense of confidence, even when in the face of turmoil. Emily didn’t set out to become a nonprofit founder when she started the boutique in Southlake at the age of 15. She was just a teenager who saw a problem and knew she could make a difference. Now, 11 years later, she’s grown Keeps Boutique into a local resource for the residents of The Gatehouse, a community for women and their children who are leaving a crisis, to turn to. Over the past decade, her impact has been felt not only by the women she consults but also the community at large. FINDING HER STYLE Even as a girl, Emily was always drawn to clothing. Emily’s parents homeschooled all four of their children, which gave Emily more flexibility throughout the day to balance her other interests. She still took the time to learn all the typical topics, but she was also able to spend more time on style and fashioning unique looks. MAR 19 • 27

“That’s the beauty of it. They can start making their own choices and start thinking about what they want to look like and what they want to wear.” — Emily

Keeps Boutique uses the proximity of clothing to self (PCS) scale to see how clients see themselves, evaluate their selfesteem and monitor their body image.

“I always loved organizing closets and putting things together,” Emily says. Her mom, Jennifer also taught Emily about the importance of giving back. Starting at the age of 14, the two would volunteer at emergency shelters twice a month, which sparked an idea in young Emily’s mind. “When I was talking with the girls who were my age in the shelter, they had just been pulled from their homes and they were telling me how they had nothing,” Emily remembers. “They were talking about what they were going to wear to school and were just trying to process what to do next.” Emily realized while this was a universal problem, she had the power to help these girls regain a sense of ease. “And I thought, my way of getting up in the morning and making myself ready for the day is putting my clothes on. And that makes me feel like I can take on my day,” Emily says. “So what a better way but to give them a place where they can create their own way of being able to take on the day.” With that, Keeps Boutique was born. At the time, Keeps Boutique’s mission was to provide teen girls in foster care with quality clothing. She set up a boutique in the back of her father’s office and got to work finding new clothing items for her future clients. Emily considered taking in used donations, but she knew these girls deserved the same experience any woman had while shopping. “We wanted them to have the best of the best,” Emily says. “Even though they were in foster care, going through the CPS processes, we wanted SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

them to know that they can have the best clothes. They can go to college; they can reach for the stars.” Emily and Jennifer pitched the organization’s efforts to a variety of clothing manufacturers at Dallas’ World Trade Center. Even though they were often told no, there were enough designers and brands who were excited by Emily’s vision and wanted to support her mission for her to start taking on clients by appointment. One of her first big donations came from D2 Showroom, who carried a line called Tulle. After first getting them to agree to donate, Emily was blown away by their generosity. “I got that email that said they were donating 10,000 pieces, and I was just like, ‘Oh my gosh!’” Emily says. With a strong concept and clothing on the racks, home groups full of girls ages 11 to 18 flocked from all over North Texas to shop. RAISING CONFIDENCE After Emily started school at Baylor University, Keeps Boutique was brought onto The Gatehouse campus. There, the nonprofit was still able to connect ladies with new clothing, but the demographic shifted from girls to women trying to get back on their feet. After graduating, Emily moved back to the Metroplex and began assisting The Gatehouse women who were trying to find appropriate clothing for next steps, whether it be a professional meeting, hearing or job interview. Just in 2018, she was able to serve 115 different women. “What Emily does is so groundbreaking,” Chief Program Officer of The Gatehouse Dr. Leti Cavazos says. “People need to keep an eye on it.” Emily has always loved pairing pieces together, but she knew the importance of giving these women the power of choice. that included a long red trench coat. And because of her appearance, two different people came up to her and asked her if she was the lawyer. Her ex-husband’s jaw fell to the floor. “She said she felt like she could look people in the eye and the day really went her way,” Emily says. “Those are the stories that we love.”

In 2018 alone, Emily was able to serve 115 different women at The Gatehouse.

“When a lot of people come in, they just tell me, ‘Oh, you can choose…’ but I will never choose for them,” Emily explains. “That’s the beauty of it. They can start making their own choices and start thinking about what they want to look like and what they want to wear.” Emily acts as a knowledgeable guide and helps people lay out different looks, but the final result is always up to the client. “There’s a lot of control in deciding the way you look, and that can be really overwhelming,” Emily says. “And the gift of being able to receive is huge.” That control can translate into power, especially when a woman finds her power outfit. One of Emily’s favorite success stories revolves around a bold clothing choice. A woman who just moved into The Gatehouse came in to see Emily at Keeps Boutique, told her she was going to see her future ex-husband later on that week and wanted to feel confident. After setting out three different outfits, the woman just didn’t know which one to go with. So Emily sent her home with all three and told her to just choose what felt right the morning of the meeting. A few weeks later, Emily received a letter from the woman who said she chose to wear the outfit 30 • MAR 19

GROWING KEEPS BOUTIQUE Emily hopes to continue collecting success stories while also seeing her clients’ self-esteem grow. Using the proximity of clothing to self (PCS) scale, Emily is able to get a feel for how her clients look at themselves. This includes a set of questions that helps Keeps Boutique grasp how each woman sees herself, her self-esteem and her body cathexis or body image. “It’s not enough to give someone a new outfit,” Cavazos says. “We also talk about and explore what that outfit makes you feel like. You think about people coming from abusive relationships… their self-esteem is really diminished from what they have endured. Emily’s job is to help them build that back up and reinforce who they really are and their full potential.” By taking the time to see the growth in those areas and speaking to these women before they have a fitting, and periodically after they walk out with clothes, Emily can see clients’ confidence grow before her eyes. “I really hope in the next 10 years to see some amazing numbers through collecting data and see our clients’ confidence grow,” Emily says. “All these little things we are doing, I want to see them on paper.” She also hopes to continue serving the members of The Gatehouse, something she’s been recognized for on a national stage. In 2017, Emily was named one of “The 25 People Shaping Retail’s Future” – an honor that has also been bestowed to people like Kendra Scott and James Brett, West Elm’s president. She is thankful for the award and loves being a part of the social work and retail industries, but her primary concern centers on her clients. Though they have come a long way since their start, Emily says Keeps Boutique still has areas where they need help need – the biggest of which is plus-sized clothing. “That’s probably 50 percent of our clientele,” Emily says. Emily loves receiving donations from big-name lines and nearby boutiques, but they often don’t have a wide selection of plus-sized pieces. There are a few fixes for that. Emily says about 20 percent of her donations are just from individuals who want to donate new clothing items. As long as the pieces have tags, Keeps can take them. So when people ask how they can help, Emily suggests that they pick up a plus-sized item they can then donate next time they are out shopping. At the end of the day, Emily still approaches clothes with the same glimmer of excitement that she had as a girl. But now instead of dreaming about future outfits, Emily spends her days setting her clients up for successful futures thanks to some new looks. “It’s so amazing that this is my job,” Emily laughs. “It’s really interesting about how life works out.” SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

SOUTHLAKE FYRE PROVES ITS NOT TO GOOD TO BE TRUE The Southlake Fire Department released a recruitment video on Valentine’s Day that turned some heads. On February 14, the department dropped a FYRE Festivalthemed video as a call out for department job openings. While they used the same font, sweeping aerial shots and even featured a pig – our recently named Southlake Stylin’ pig, Bamm Bamm Schaefer – as the original FYRE Festival promotional video, Southlake Fire wants to ensure people know that this opportunity isn’t too good to be true. Aspiring firefighters might not join the ranks of Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber (both featured in the original FYRE video), but they would work alongside notable neighborhood heroes – like one of our 2018 Tastemakers, Chris Brown, who makes a cameo in the video. For more information, interested candidates can visit CityofSouthlakeJobs.com.

Baker says there are a variety of reasons behind this decision, but one of the biggest was limited traffic during football’s offseason. FINDING GRACE Local Nonprofit Housing Manager Uses Life Challenges to Help Others

amé Scott can recall staying up until 2 a.m. with a distraught woman whose child had to be taken by Child Protective Services. As the transitional housing manager for Grapevine Relief and Community Exchange (GRACE), a local nonprofit with a mission to help the less fortunate by guiding them to a life of self-sufficiency, Jamé is oncall 24/7. That night was no different. It had come to her attention that a woman going through GRACE’s transitional housing program was addicted to a controlled substance. After calling CPS, Jamé stayed to comfort the woman and helped clean her apartment so that she could rest. The next day,

She walked away with a job lead to once again pursue her passion for helping people. Two weeks into her working as a case manager at GRACE, her supervisor moved on to a different position. Within two and a half months, Jamé was promoted to transitional housing program manager. BUILDING PEOPLE’S CONFIDENCE AND CREDIT SCORES GRACE has many branches. From the food pantry to the clinic to transitional housing, all of these services and programs work to help people in crisis. They service the individuals and families, men and women, with or without children to become self-sufficient. To qualify for the transitional housing program, their main requirement is being able to work and being homeless. Homelessness is defined as the individual not having a nightly residence in their name, so even if they are living out of a car or motel, they can still apply for the program. “What I love about this program – for as long as I've worked in social work I've never seen anything like it – is that we do anything and everything that we can within our power to assist them with becoming self-sufficient,” Jamé explains. “So we truly tailor the program to their needs. There’s not any cookie cutter answers.” As she walks through a small, GRACE-owned apartment complex not far off of Grapevine’s Main Street, Jamé starts to light up. The sound of volunteers ripping up old flooring is like music to her ears. She loves making these rooms into homes. These apartments are fully furnished, from delicate decor accents to a stocked pantry. "We want to make sure that the place feels as much like home as possible and that they feel safe and welcome,” she says. That means going as far as interviewing program candidates to find out what kind of food they like and what some of their favorite decorative items are. The best part: Once the person graduates from the program and moves into their own place, they can take everything (with the exception of major appliances) with them. Now living in a safe, reliable place, individuals and families are able to grow their savings and credit scores as they work to become self-sufficient. “We focus a lot on building their self-esteem and budgeting,” Jamé says. “Our goal is to give them the skills to work with so that they don't end up back where they came from. It's not just putting a Band-Aid on it, it's getting to the root of the issue so that they can survive on their own.” This can take on many forms beyond housing. People in the transitional housing program can also benefit from the nonprofit's other services, including the GRACE Pantry, Clothing Room and the GRACE resale stores. Their medical needs are cared for at the GRACE Community Clinic. With an army of volunteers and employees, GRACE is well equipped to get people on their feet. For Jamé, who has now worked with GRACE for two and a half years, it feels like life coming full circle. On top of holding three degrees, she is now studying for a licensure exam to become a licensed social worker. “To come from being a little homeless girl who didn't think I would amount to anything, to being able to help other people is just amazing for me,” she says. “I feel like that's my purpose. To advocate for other people and help them get out their turmoil to wherever their destiny and purpose is in life.”

VOLUNTEER SOUTHLAKE COORDINATOR CONNECTS LOCALS WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO GIVE BACK

S

outhlake thrives because of the citizens who give their time and effort to make this community better. For those who want to get involved but don’t know how, Volunteer Southlake is a great place to start. The city-run resource connects locals with opportunities ranging from senior center helper to teen court volunteer to even a “secret citizen” role. Lindy Calzada, the Volunteer Coordinator, connects hundreds of people with meaningful responsibilities that make a difference – both for the city and in the community.

BEFORE VOLUNTEER SOUTHLAKE… I worked in philanthropy as a grantmaker. There is a bit of a through-line from that work to my current position as I would have the occasion to work with nonprofit organizations on their volunteer programs. I started in the grantmaking field in Boston and moved to a small private foundation in Dallas. Before that, in 2008, my career made the pivot to the nonprofit space after being fortunate to work for Chicago’s public radio station, WBEZ, where I helped develop additional sponsor support. And before that (many, many moons ago), I worked in business development in the financial sector and spent the last few years working for Lehman Brothers. I STARTED WITH VOLUNTEER SOUTHLAKE… in the summer of 2017. It was on the day of Stars and Stripes, which, as you may know, is one of the city’s largest events. I very quickly started to understand how much heart and work are put into these special events. Simultaneously, the importance of the volunteers, who donated their time and energy on a very warm day, became very clear to me. THROUGH VOLUNTEER SOUTHLAKE… volunteers may serve within different city departments, as well as with partner nonprofit organizations in the area such as Call-A-Ride Southlake (CARS), Southlake Chamber of Commerce, Grapevine Relief and Community Exchange, Metroport Meals on Wheels and SafeHaven of Tarrant County. VOLUNTEERS ARE… vital to the success of these Southlake events and so much of what the city accomplishes day-to-day. Volunteer Southlake seeks to provide a meaningful, engaging and rewarding volunteer experience. IN OUR LAST FISCAL YEAR… volunteers gave over 28,000 hours of service to the City of Southlake, which is the equivalent of nearly 14 fulltime employees and has a value of $698,850. THE CITY OF SOUTHLAKE… is fortunate to have many long-standing volunteers who have been giving back to this city in which they live for quite some time. Based on my own learnings, the inspi-

ration to give their time is rooted in a strong loyalty and love for where they live. I think that is, in part, what makes Southlake very special. SOUTHLAKE IS… a community that places a high value on community service. This is illustrated in the work of the Carroll ISD, the citizenry and the city’s efforts to connect Southlake citizens to volunteer opportunities. IT IS HEARTENING TO… talk to parents expressing their interest in having their children learn the value of service. That value put on community service spreads far and wide as many of our youth volunteers are working toward goals set by their school or by groups such as the National Honors Society. NEW VOLUNTEERS… will be meeting new people, potentially learning new skills and, we hope, developing a fondness for service. It can be the beginning of a fulfilling journey. WE VALUE… our volunteers’ feedback. We work hard to incorporate insight from the monthly volunteer surveys we ask our volunteers to complete. Additionally, one of this year’s goals is to explore new ways to engage our volunteers and we hope to include volunteer voices in this process. PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW... of the mighty team that makes Volunteer Southlake successful, from the volunteer liaisons to the special event coordinators who may only work with our volunteers intermittently throughout the year, but strive to ensure a positive experience for the volunteers. THROUGH MY LENS… I am fortunate to see the sheer amount of interest Southlake citizens take in volunteering their time and energy. The city’s commitment, illustrated by Volunteer Southlake’s very existence, to offering an array of community service opportunities and leveraging the generosity of our volunteers to pull off major feats for Southlake.

rom precise plating to thoughtful ingredient combinations, diners can tell when their dishes are treated with care. After walking through Jalisco Norte and passing by the open kitchen and its trays of pristine offerings, customers can feel they will be treated to a night of pampering. Jalisco Norte may not have embossed golden gauntlets or crystal chandeliers, but their attention to detail in their cooking and their warm, knowledgeable staff proves it's the heart of the place that makes a restaurant stand out from the rest. That heart comes from chef Jose Meza, who elevates the regional Mexican restaurant with

his inspiring flavor fusions and intricate presentation. His menu sports familiar entrees and sides, but each of his signature dishes comes out complex, which displays the full potential of Mexican fare. “My first goal is to let people know the magnitude and the deep, wide variety of food and flavors that the Mexican cuisine has to offer,” chef Meza says. “At the same time, the people who know those flavors have flashbacks and memories of the first time they had that sauce, that garnish, that plate and make them relive it and share it with their friends or family joining their dinner.” It’s easy to embrace that sharing spirit after glancing over Jalisco Norte’s starters. LOCALFLAVOR review

Corn Esquites, a refined interpretation of elote with queso fresco, crema, lemon and chile powder, puts a new twist on an old-time favorite while still giving diners that comfort food feel. Their Queso Fundido, which can be made with mushrooms, chorizo, flat iron steak or blue cheese, proves that classics have earned their place on menus for a reason. While their tacos, tostadas and enchiladas are available à la carte, their signature dishes are too indulgent to pass up. The Seared Scallops, accompanied by coconut mole, sweet potato puree, squid ink chicharron and asparagus, are beautifully seared and brilliantly paired with velvety finishes. The dish might look too pretty to eat, but after getting a taste of one of the plate’s purees, you won’t be able to put your fork down. While the end result is obviously delicious, chef Meza says his overall goal is to share his own culinary perspective with his diners. “My menus are always based on my own experiences,” chef Meza says. “I like to share everything I’ve learned during my time as a cook and what I’ve learned from the places I’ve been, with the guests of our restaurant.” That comes through with the Carne Asada, an Allen Brothers prime ribeye served alongside nopal, panela cheese, chorizo and molcajete sauce. The dish proves that hearty flavors can still be intricate with a little help from non-traditional ingredients. The Grilled Salmon, cooked to perfection with a piloncillo chipotle glaze, black garlic puree and sautéed bok choy, acts as an opportunity to see the chef’s flavor innovations. The spice and sweetness of the flaky fish are balanced by the earthy, tender greens. While guests can expect to see these dishes year round, their specialty dishes fluctuate depending on what’s fresh. “We want to keep evolving and with that things need to change with seasons,” owner Tim McEneny says. “One thing that is very consistent, the quality of the food and ingredients are considered some of the best available.” To get the full experience, try one of their many spirited drinks. The Ranch Water, a tequila-based cocktail served in a Topo Chino half bottle, keeps guests refreshed as they dig into their rich dishes. The margarita varieties, available skinny, spicy or both, show off traditional flavors like agave and jalapeno. For something unique to Jalisco Norte, try the A Mexican & A Cowboy Walk Into A Bar, el mayor añejo tequila, orange and lemon peel, turbinado, angostura and walnut bitters. It gives diners the kick they would expect out of a Southern drink. Top off the night with one of their sweets like the Three Leches Cake, a Mexican sponge cake soaked in leche sauce, deconstructed piña colada compote, coconut rum sorbet and crema chantilly, or Carlota de Limon, galletas maria soaked in egg-less custard, lassi, honey cookie crumble and meringue. They pair well with Jalisco Norte’s after-dinner drinks, like the Jalisco Espresso Martini — mole-infused Grey Goose, double espresso liqueur, and are the perfect finish for an indulgent night out.

Beautiful Bowls Rush Bowls Takes The Stress Out Of Healthy Dining It can be challenging to find wholesome food in a rush, which is why Keller’s Rush Bowls has already gained a local following since opening in January. The acai bowl eatery, a franchise owned by Keller residents Mike and April Fuchs, started out as a Colorado brand and has quickly grown throughout Texas because of their natural ingredients and delicious flavors. The menu features scrumptious bowls that are either fruit- or plant-based. After blending a few of these key ingredients into a smoothie-like base, the bowls are topped with fixings like shaved coconut, organic granola and honey. Each is packed with nutrients, even though they taste like a sweet treat. So they are an easy way to ensure you, or your kids, actually enjoy eating a balanced meal. Mike Fuchs, who previously opened a Rush Bowls in Flower Mound, has seen the community embrace their brand because of the area’s on-the-go mentality. “Given all the active lifestyle families, we felt there was a great opportunity to bring the bowl lifestyle to our hometown,” Mike says. “We offer a fun, inviting environment with high-quality products that feel indulgent but are really good for you.” Every bowl and smoothie is made on the spot, so each spoonful carries a sense of brightness. Plus, their peanut butter and mixed-berry jelly are made in-house, so you can rest assured that these products are made and served fresh. Rush Bowl prides itself on giving options to their guests, even when they may be eating with dietary restrictions. They have options for vegetarian, vegan, wheat-free, nut-free, soy-free and dairy-free diners. “We focus on customizing to meet dietary needs to help you live your healthy lifestyle,” Mike says. The Fuchs family has also rolled out a brand new offering unavailable at any other Rush Bowl store. Their pops, packed with the same all-natural ingredients found in their bowls, are a great alternative for kids who are looking for something sweet. Each pop comes topped with fresh products, like fresh fruit slices or tasty drizzlings, which makes them not only fun to eat but also a wholesome meal for people of all ages. So rush over to Rush Bowls to give one of these balanced treats a try. After you get a taste for these delicious dishes, you’ll stop stressing about eating healthy on the go.

date NIGHT luxury and Leisure

A Night Spent At Legacy West What was once a sleepy suburb of Dallas has now transformed into a dining hub for North Texas. West Plano’s Legacy West came into its own last year after opening one luxury retailer and restaurant right after the other. The final result is a beautiful strip full of charming attractions ready to be explored by both locals and those willing to drive up north to experience them. While a majority of the locations listed on Legacy West’s directory could make for an exquisite date night, we wanted to give you a sampling of a few of their offerings. Because if you’re going to venture over to the luxury district, we want to ensure you are getting the most out of your night.

1

Start the night by sipping on a fine whiskey or enjoying a refreshing cocktail in a full-blown Texas environment at Haywire. The three-story restaurant proves everything is bigger and better in the Lone Star State. Each floor offers distinct experiences with the ground-level lounge providing a great drinks location to help warm up any date night. Their extensive whiskey list includes everything from approachable American ryes to single malt scotches. For those looking for something other than whiskey, their specialty concoctions and wine by the glass prove to stand up. HaywireRestaurant.com

A quick stroll down Windrose Avenue will lead you to Toulouse Café and Bar, an airy French bistro that serves both traditional and contemporary takes on the classic cuisine. Start out with one of their chic cocktails – like the French 77 and Pear & Honey – that easily pair with the night’s delicate dishes. Their appetizers range from classic options like Escargot Bourguignonne to rousing starters like Ahi Tuna Tartare. The Duck Two Ways and Bouillabaisse entrees showcase the country’s beloved plates with superb technique and presentation. While we recommend trying and sharing a few things as a table, you’ll definitely want to come back to try more after sinking your teeth into these extravagant eats. ToulouseCafeAndBar.com

3

If you left your car in the district’s parking garage, you’ll either have to pass by Sprinkles or their pink cupcake ATM located on the outside of the store, which means you must sneak in a quick trip before calling it a night. The cupcake destination only has a few locations throughout the Metroplex, so a drive out to just try a few of their creations is more than acceptable. But because you’re already there, it’s also acceptable to order a bunch to enjoy back home. With options like Cuban Coffee, Salty Caramel, Vegan Red Velvet and Gluten-free Lemon Blueberry, everyone can find something to enjoy. If you have your heart set on a specific flavor, check their website to see which cupcakes will be available each day to plan accordingly. Photo courtesy of Sprinkles. Sprinkles.com

home STYLE Fabulous Floors

W

hen it comes to updating your home, nothing compares to the facelift of new flooring. Think back to any house renovation show. If you think they’re going to demolish walls but leave the flooring as-is, you’re terribly mistaken. Floors can be where the biggest changes happen, especially if your home is a bit on the older side. However, updating floors throughout your home can be daunting due to the insurmountable amount of options. Even once you choose between wood, carpet, tile or other types, there are hundreds of possibilities within each category. With that in mind, we are sticking with two major trends: gray hardwood floors and geometric-patterned carpets. We could feel a lot of you tense up at that last option, so just bear with us.

GOING GRAY In case you missed it, the last few years of interior design trends have been ruled by shades of gray. If you’ve been holding out because it seemed like a passing phase, we’re here to tell you it’s safe to hop on board. Gray isn’t going anywhere. If you’re aiming for a modern, chic aesthetic that can also fare well with rustic decor, then gray hardwood floors are your answer. While the

airy, light looks are also taking off, who wants to keep up with white floors? Whether you go with a cool or warm gray tone, it’s guaranteed to hide dirt better, so that’s a small perk as well. Plus, that minimalist look of all white still pairs fine with a gray hardwood floor. We’re calling this a win-win. The aforementioned plethora of options are still at play here, so even if you’ve settled on hardwood and gray, you still need to pick the exact shade, the width of the plank and the type and texture of wood. We recommend wider planks (5 inches or more) for a more contemporary look.

WHIMSICALLY WOVEN We’ll preface with this: If you’re going for timeless, this look isn’t for you. And, if you’re looking to cover a lot of space rather than add an accent to your flooring, we advise sticking with the advice above. However, if you have some space to play with and you’re feeling a bit bold, it’s time to bust out the geometricpatterned carpet. Geometric shapes have also found their way into home decor sections and our hearts, but use them sparingly. If you want to take the easy way out, there are plenty of beautiful rugs following this trend. But imagine the wow factor of your home office’s floors looking simultaneously whimsical and modern. If it’s a smaller room and not the focal point of your home, feel free to play!

Oh, Baby!

Where To Expect Great Pampering When You’re Expecting

F

or some, the best way to treat life’s landmarks is with a special trip. Whether it was a senior vacation (high school or college), a honeymoon or an anniversary getaway, odds are, you have fond memories to look back on outside of Southlake. Now, a new trend is making it possible to spoil yourself during yet another life milestone: babymoons! If you are adding on to your family, use this opportunity to have one last calm moment before your child’s arrival. It’s safe to say that in a few short months, your life will forever change. First pregnancy or

fifth, expecting mommas always have a good reason for a quick sabbatical. So take a deep breath, relax and prepare to be pampered at any of these three locations. Oh, and leave the other kids at Grandma’s.

Rancho Valencia in Rancho Santa Fe, California We weren’t kidding when we said babymoons are indeed a trend. They are becoming so common that resorts, such as Rancho Valencia, have special packages designed specifically for expecting mothers and their significant others. Tucked away on 45 acres of beautiful gardens and olive groves in Rancho Santa Fe, California, the resort

offers the “Great Expectations Babymoon” package. Couples arrive to a luxurious, rose petal-covered bed and cupcakes for two. After you get settled in, treat yourselves to a massage at Rancho Valencia’s couple’s spa suite. The spa has a special prenatal massage just for mom! The package also includes discounted room rates on any type of room, a special welcome and fresh orange juice every morning. If you’re in the mood to soak up some vitamin D, stretch out by the glistening pool or try your hand at tennis! If you’re looking to explore outside of the resort, Solana Beach is less than 20 minutes away and Black Mountain Open Space Park is about 30 minutes out. In other words, whether you’re craving a good hike or want to put your toes in the sand, Rancho Valencia is perfectly located for you to do both! RanchoValencia.com

Buttermilk Falls Inn & Spa in Milton, New York Something about this inn’s name just sounds magically peaceful. Once you arrive at Buttermilk Falls Inn & Spa, you’ll find that the name is only a fraction as peaceful as the locale. The estate sits on 75 acres in the lush Hudson River Valley. It may not have the showstopping pools and golf courses of the other resorts on the list, but it offers one key amenity that the others cannot: Food fresh from its own farm. Eggs, honey and fresh produce are all on the menu at Henry’s at the Farm restaurant. The inn’s full-service spa features a solar-powered dry sauna, pool, steam room and juice bar, so moms-to-be can treat themselves. ButtermilkFallsInn.com

The Westin Kierland Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona Google “babymoon destination” and you’ll inevitably see Scottsdale, Arizona, near the top of the list. We’re not sure how they’ve managed to corner that market, but the good news is it’s not too far from home. This is a great one to consider if you’re in your third trimester and you aren’t looking to board a long flight. The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa is more than equipped to have you feeling like royalty. Complete with a 900-foot lazy river, cabanas and islands, the pool scene is enough to keep you coming back. But, if putting on a swimsuit doesn’t sound like your thing at the moment, look no further than the resort’s spa: Agave, The Arizona Spa. Agave houses 20 treatment rooms, a movement studio, a juice bar and men’s and ladies’ locker rooms – each with a whirlpool, sauna and steam room. And of course, if you enjoy a round of golf, you’re in good hands at The Westin Kierland. KierlandResort.com

Fall In Love With Michael Bublé Listen To This Canadian Star’s Smooth Sounds When He Returns To Dallas This Month

Y

ou’ve never seen this side of Michael Bublé before. After his then 3-year-old son was diagnosed with cancer in 2016, the Canadian singer’s life and career were understandably put on hold. This journey – ending with a clean bill of health for his son — helped Bublé rediscover the power of love. Now, he is back with a brand-new album titled "♥" [love], a world tour and a renewed spirit, and he’s ready to embrace the beauty of life and music once again. Hear the multiple Grammy and JUNO Award winning artist perform hits from his eighth studio album, billed as his “most romantic record to date,” when he comes to Dallas this month. From his sincere cover of Doris Day’s 1952 classic “When I Fall in Love” to a beautiful original song called “Forever Now,” fans will love the unique arrangements and strong vocals on display throughout the performance.

86 • MAR 19

If you didn’t know better, you might assume that the easylistening, jazzy sounds of Bublé came from the same era as Frank Sinatra and Stevie Wonder. However, his self-titled debut album actually came out 57 years after Sinatra’s, making an entirely new generation fall in love with the swingy pop music. Now, he has sold more than 60 million records around the world, released one of the best-selling Christmas albums of all time and has collaborated with many famous musicians including Barbra Streisand, Idina Menzel and Charlie Puth among others. Throughout the years, Bublé has released many hit singles, including “Haven’t Met You Yet,” “Feeling Good,” “It’s a Beautiful Day” and “Home.” Bring a date to this show for a lovely evening filled with passion, soul and, most importantly, love. 17TH ANNUAL HOPE DINNER

NORTH TEXAS IRISH FESTIVAL

MARCH 2

MARCH 8-10

FORT WORTH OMNI HOTEL | Stomp your feet and raise your glass at the 17th annual Hope Dinner, which will transform the Omni Hotel in Fort Worth to an evening of boots and bling! Mingle with guests during the cocktail hour before sitting down to an elegant three-course dinner served by Omni’s chefs. Afterward, two-step your way around the dance floor as Texas Country artist Jack Ingram performs some of his popular songs like “Measure of a Man,” “Barefoot and Crazy” and “Maybe She’ll Get Lonely.” End the night by bidding on treasures from the live auction. Proceeds from the night benefit Community Storehouse, which helps more than 4,100 local children meet their educational and well-being needs. You’ll leave feeling even prouder to be a Texan!

FAIR PARK | Get ready to clap along to some festive music and enjoy riveting dance numbers at the 37th annual North Texas Irish Festival. The weekend will include small concerts from both regional and national musical acts, Irish dance performances from local and regional dance schools and stimulating presentations from chefs, storytellers and even select Celtic horses. There will also be plenty of engaging activities that will help you be a part of the fun – including Irish music sessions, a 5K fun run and whiskey tastings. Get ready to embrace your inner Irish at this Dallas celebration.

THE WOLVES MARCH 6-APRIL 14 WYLY STUDIO THEATRE | They may seem like your typical high school girls at first — gossiping about boys and sharing secrets — but the nine young women who make up the elite soccer team in “The Wolves” are more accurately described as “female warriors.” This play tells the story of these fierce athletes who learn about themselves and the world during pre-game stretches and on the field. In addition to touching hearts across America, this play has also won the American Playwriting Foundation’s inaugural Relentless Award (given to plays that are fearless, challenging and truthful), and it was a finalist for the 2017 Pulitzer Prize in drama. You’ll be cheering these talented teens on as they score goals — and win a spot in your heart. DALLAS ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADE AND FESTIVAL

March 16

MARCH 16 DALLAS | Kilt-wearing bagpipe players, cowboys on horses and more green-colored things than you’ve ever seen in one place will be at Dallas’s 40th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival this month! Thousands of people are expected to gather at this event, known as the largest St. Paddy’s Day parade in the South. Cheer on the almost 100 different floats as they go along a two-mile route at 11 a.m., or show up early to enjoy the festival, running 9 a.m.-3 p.m. This will include everything from food trucks and a beer garden to family-friendly activities and exhibitor booths. We may be far away from Ireland, but the Irish spirit is alive and well in Texas! KASEY MUSGRAVES MARCH 8

March 8

BOMB FACTORY | From singing about life in a trailer park (which won her two Grammy Awards) to singing about letting bad boyfriends go, Texas native Kasey Musgraves has grown a lot since her debut album “Same Trailer, Different Park” was released in 2013. With three studio albums and one Christmas collection under her rhinestone-studded belt, Musgraves is embarking on a world tour to share her music with fans from Dallas to Sydney, Australia. Sing along to your favorite songs from her latest album “Golden Hour” (like "Space Cowboy," "High Horse" and "Slow Burn"), which won the Country Music Association's 2018 Album of the Year award. This rising country music superstar won't be playing intimate venues for long, so don't miss your opportunity to hear her beautiful vocals up close.

Treat yourself to goodies from the Waffle-O-Licious food truck and other vendors; drink the free Sam ’76 Beer and Truly Spiked Sparkling Water; compete in the Tutu Contest or the Donut Eating Contest; and challenge your friends to a game of spike ball, beer pong or cornhole. DALLAS | A mini skirt filled with cookies, a dress covered in fast food wrappers and spoons and a handbag that shows off golden-brown fries have all been spotted at Food in Fashion, an annual event by the Greater Dallas Restaurant Association. This scrumptious fundraiser (which benefits local restaurant and hospitality careerdevelopment programs) begins with appetizers prepared by local student culinary teams, who are competing for the Culinary Cup trophy. Next, guests will be treated to a tasty fashion show, where each design — often full of edible surprises — incorporates at least 10 percent of its look from a sponsoring restaurant. Afterward, bid on treasures in the silent and live auctions, attend a VIP reception and more. When food and fashion come together, it’s a recipe for a good time.

In addition, your attendance will also help provide meals to the community, as a portion of proceeds benefits the North Texas Food Bank. There’s no better reason to pop a cold one!

Baby Steps

I

am a mother, wife, geek at heart and an engineer by profession. I was born and raised in Nepal and had no fear of breaking barriers to become an engineer. But three years ago, I started experiencing severe back pain, which significantly affected my mobility. Walking without pain was my true wish at the time. I had to teach my son how to tie my shoelaces because I couldn’t – a simple thing we take for granted. At that moment, I knew I wanted to do something to get out of pain. I couldn’t run, but I could walk – baby steps. So I started exploring the trails around the Metroplex. I was pleasantly surprised to find a number of beautiful trails here. After embarking on several high altitude hikes in different states, I felt ready for my ultimate test: Everest Base Camp. Luckily, I had friends and family members who were supportive and adopted my dream as their own. My husband and son became my biggest cheerleaders. They reminded me of my own mantra: “Whatever your mind says is what your body is going to do.” On October 22, I boarded the 28-plus hour flight from DFW to Nepal. The flight to Lukla Airport, considered the most dangerous airport in the world, was just the start. We trekked uphill about six to eight hours a day. Walking along rivers and mountains, you have the chance to connect with yourself. There was no to-do list. I was just listening to my footsteps, the wind and the bells tied around the yak.

Around day six, I began to feel homesick. My body was fighting the altitude and warring with time. The rescue helicopters were plain reminders of the dangers on the mountain. Some days, we would see three in one hour. It gets in your head and makes you second-guess your ability. I had to look back at what I’d accomplished instead of what I still had to do. The best part of walking with people was hearing their stories. Everyone I talked to had their own reasons for taking the trek, but we were all connected through the mountains. Huge mountains made me realize how small humans are. After eight days of continuous walking, sleeping in lodges, no showering and watching the rescue helicopters come and go, I reached the basecamp around 3 a.m. central time. It took about 10 minutes for reality to set in: I accomplished my goal. I spent some time reading cards from friends and family, and I ate a cookie my friend baked me as a final treat. I am now home with more appreciation for the roof over my head, food on my plate and clean air to breathe. I returned with a greater sense of appreciation for my life and the lives of others. Life-changing opportunities are never out of reach. I think at least one time in everyone’s life, people should take on a distant dream, just so you know that you can.
