Put Something Good in the World At my house, kids’ bedtimes always involve a little reading before lights out. I read to my toddler, but the routine has evolved a bit with my first-grader, who now recites tales to me. (It’s a nice change of pace to fluff up a pillow and have someone else tell the story.) The other night, my budding reader pulled a thick book of Shel Silverstein poems from his bookshelf and turned to the poem, “Put Something In.” I happen to love this poem, which in a few magical lines, encourages us to put something in the world that wasn’t there before—whether we “draw a crazy picture, write a nutty poem, sing a mumble-grumble song or whistle through your comb.” I love how Silverstein combined whimsy and profundity into mini masterpieces that are simple enough for children to understand and meaningful enough to make adults think. It made me contemplate: What am I putting in the world? For many, putting something in the world means giving of themselves to help others. Read through our Giving Guide on page 33 and you’ll find some local professionals who have a genuine heart for helping. In their businesses, they don’t just serve customers and clients; they also lend a hand to those in need. Maybe we’d all be inclined to put more goodness in the world if we could track our good works—perhaps with something like a GiveBit, as our writer Annette Brooks suggests on page 12. Check out her story for ways to make the world a better place, starting right here in Southlake. When you bring good people and good causes together, anything is possible. In “Cooking Up Hope” on page 28, learn how Taste Buds Kitchen and area nonprofit HopeKids help make young chefs’ culinary dreams come true. For kids with life-threatening illnesses, days are often filled with treatments and appointments. But, as executive director Bridget Asheim notes, “HopeKids gives children something to look forward to.” Asheim, along with many more do-gooders featured in the next 95 pages, is certainly putting something in the world that wasn’t there before. I think Shel Silverstein would’ve been proud.

he late Muhammad Ali opined, “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.” With our busy lives, it can be difficult to find time to volunteer, and we forget about truly serving others in a broader sense— paying our earthly rent, as Ali describes it. Wouldn’t it be great if someone developed a wearable device that could remind us to help others as well as stay active? Maybe a GiveBit? Until then, we must rely on ourselves to reach out and embrace the goodness of volunteerism. Making monetary contributions or donating items you no longer need are indeed ways to help out, but volunteering your personal time and energy to selflessly help others lifts you to a new plateau. Through volunteerism, you learn more about yourself, meet interesting people and like-minded friends, and broaden your horizons as you gain insight and discover new ways of looking at issues. Volunteering in your own community is particularly compelling. Not only does it give you a chance to become better connected and socially aware, offering assistance feels good when you make a difference right where you live. And there’s another benefit—you get to live in a community that is improved through volunteering. SOUND GOOD? THEN IT’S TIME TO START PLANNING YOUR VOLUNTEER STRATEGY.
First Steps Before you rush to sign up for anything, do some soulsearching. A little planning and introspection up front will leave you satisfied with your decision and make you more likely to stay committed to it. Start by determining the amount of time you have available. Some volunteer assignments require an ongoing commitment, while others can be accomplished as you have time. If you are new to volunteering, it may be wise to start slowly, then expand your schedule as you become comfortable. Keep in mind that helping with small tasks can make a real difference to the lives of people, animals and organizations in need. Every contribution matters. Next, determine what types of causes or issues interest you the most. Do you want to help children, the elderly, military veterans or families who are economically challenged? Would you like to be involved with rescuing animals? Does beautifying your community appeal to you? Do you want to work as part of a team or as an individual contributor? Also, consider whether you want to use a set of skills you already have or learn some new ones. If you’re good at writing,

for instance, do you want to help people with their resumes? If you have great people skills, check out opportunities that require someone who is a good, supportive listener. Do you love children and enjoy reading out loud? Ask to help with our local library’s story time or find a school in need of volunteers. If you’re looking for something more physical in nature, help with a community cleanup or a food drive or stock and distribute food at a local food pantry.

This diverse set includes, but is not limited to, volunteering at the library, Southlake Senior Center, and Southlake Town Hall, where you can contribute as an on-call secretary, as a newsletter journalist, and more. Interested in helping keep Southlake safe? The Departments of Public Safety offers numerous options, such as Volunteers in Policing (VIPS), Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Fire Rehab, Crud Cruiser and Citizens On Patrol (COPS). All volunteers must attend the 13-week Citizens Academy training prior to serving. Or perhaps you would like to get involved with seasonal events. This spring, help set up games, crafts, egg hunts and more for Easter in the Park. If you love working with children, consider volunteer opportunities with Southlake’s Camp Mania, which provides fun activities for kid ages five through 11 during school and summer breaks. Volunteer Southlake also encourages children to volunteer. Many opportunities are open to ages 12 and up, and the musician volunteer program gives young talent—starting at age seven—a chance to gain valuable performance experience while sharing the gift of music with the community. “People from various backgrounds and with different ideas come together in Southlake to volunteer and make our community distinctive,” says

Shawn McCaskill, Southlake city council member. “There’s something for everyone, including becoming involved in one of our many boards and commissions, which provide valuable advisement to the city council.”
Get Happy and Healthy by Giving Most people who volunteer agree that those who give of themselves also receive, and research supports this. The London School of Economics examined the relationship between volunteering and measures of happiness and found that the more people volunteered, the happier they were. A study cited in a report from The Corporation for National and Community Service, determined that those who volunteer have lower mortality rates, greater functional ability and lower rates of depression later in life than those who do not volunteer.
Residents serving on boards and commissions are appointed by the city council for two-year terms. Opportunities include the parks and recreation board, Southlake arts council, planning and zoning commission, and many more.
Branching Out To get involved in organizations that cater to multiple area communities, consider one of the following. Community Storehouse (CommunityStoreHouse.org) is the only children's charity in Northwest Tarrant County focused on keeping children in the classroom while going through struggling times. Addressing issues that threaten to interfere with a child’s success in school can be crucial to their long-term success in life. Support can include tutoring, counseling, supply donation and even financial planning. I Can Still Shine (ICanStillShine.org), is a faithbased organization created to help women and their children escape abusive relationships and break the cycle of abuse, homelessness and pain. I Can Still Shine sponsors events that are free and open to abused women and children and offers an array of services that includes food, clothing, personal care items, free eye exams and glasses, off-site counseling services and much more.

Young Life (Southlake.YoungLife.org) believes in the power of presence, and that childrens’ lives are dramatically impacted when caring adults come alongside them, sharing God's love with them. The organization provides a weekly students’ club, a small group bible study, winter or summer camp at Young Life properties, international mission trips and other regional and area Young Life events. Adults can support Young Life in several ways, such as becoming a volunteer leader or committee member.

TEE UP FOR A GOOD CAUSE AT METROPORT MEALS ON WHEELS GOLF CLASSIC The Metroport Meals On Wheels 26th Annual Golf Classic on April 3 is a hole in one. Not only will participants get to hit the links at the stunning Trophy Club Country Club, they’ll be helping support local seniors. Presented by Allen Samuels with actor Burton Gilliam as the honorary chairman, this year’s tournament is not to be missed. “The MMOW golf tournament is an event that offers something for everyone. For golfers, it’s a day on a great private course for a worthy cause with camaraderie, contests, delicious food, auctions and entertainment,” said tournament co-chair Robert Finn. Proceeds from this event help fund the home-delivered meals and senior center programs provided by MMOW. COMMUNITY INVITED TO JOIN IN THE RUN4ELISE 5K, 1-MILE FUNDRAISER All are invited to take part in the inaugural Run4Elise5K and 1-Mile Fun Run on April 8 at Dragon Stadium. Elise Cerami was a passionate 13-year-old competitive swimmer who drowned during warm-ups at a club practice last June. Run4Elise is a division of the SWIM4Elise Foundation, a registered nonprofit organization that promotes water safety through swimming scholarships. Katie Meili, 2016 U.S. Olympic team swimmer and two-time Olympic medalist in both gold and bronze, will be the special guest at the event. Gather your family and friends and create a team to run in memory of Elise—the team deadline is March 17. Plaques will be awarded to the two teams with the most registered participants. The event kicks off at 8:15 a.m. with a 1-mile Fun Run followed by a 5K at 8:45 a.m.

DRAGON PRIDE SOARED ON NATIONAL SIGNING DAY 2017 National Signing Day 2017 is in the books, and this year, Carroll Senior High School produced 16 student athletes who signed letters of intent. In front of an overflowing crowd of family, friends, coaches, staff and media in the Student Activity Center, 16 student athletes signed scholarships in three sports with colleges and universities across the country. CARROLL INDOOR PERCUSSION LAUNCHED “DRAGONS FOR WATER” INITIATIVE Carroll Indoor Percussion has brought its show “From Dust” to life … and added a philanthropic spin. At last month’s Band Bistro fundraiser, the group announced its charity:water initiative to help bring clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. Carroll Indoor Percussion hopes to raise $10,000, which will help build a well. The community is encouraged to contribute at charitywater.org. Click on Fundraise and search for “Dragons For Water.” The initiative is in line with Carroll ISD’s strategic action plan to “Expand our culture of compassionate service through knowledge and experience.” Percussion members hope that by bringing this issue to light they can inspire others to donate to charity:water and help people across the world rise from the dust and achieve their own greatness.

APEX ARTS LEAGUE BRINGS THE JAZZ AT NINTH-ANNUAL FESTIVAL Get ready for a jazzed-up Saturday night—The APEX Arts League presents The One O’Clock Lab Band in concert on Saturday, March 4 at 7 p.m. at White’s Chapel United Methodist Church for its ninth-annual APEX Jazz Festival. The One O’Clock, under the new and exciting direction of Alan Baylock, is the premier performing jazz ensemble from the internationally acclaimed University of North Texas’ Jazz Studies Program. The One O’Clock is a seven-time Grammynominated ensemble and has produced a multitude of great composers, performers and educators all throughout the world, recording more than 60 albums in its tenure. The Carroll Jazz Orchestra, along with two other high school jazz bands, will open the program. Tickets are available at the door for $10 for adults and $5 for students, seniors and Apex members. PACK MORE FUN INTO YOUR FRIDAYS AT THE BOB JONES NATURE CENTER This spring, the Bob Jones Nature Center offers a diverse slate of fun, family-oriented programming on the last Friday of each month. On March 31, take your kids on a Dino Hunt and on April 28, enjoy a spot of tea and winged beauties at the Butterfly Flutterby Tea Party. Tickets at each event are $12 for children of Nature Center members and $15 for children of nonmembers.

DRAGON MUSICIAN TRUMPETED HIS WAY TO STATE Last month, senior trumpet player Sam Ortiz performed with the Texas All-State Band in San Antonio as part of the 2017 Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Clinic/Convention. Ortiz was chosen for this prestigious honor through a competitive process held across the state at district, region and area levels. This was Ortiz’s first time to perform as a member of a TMEA All-State organization. Only the top 2.6 percent of musicians who initially audition become All-State musicians.

SPOTLIGHT community SOUTHLAKE WOMEN’S CLUB PRESENTED CHECK TO CARROLL ISD Every summer, the Southlake Women’s Club sells prepackaged, CISD-approved school supplies to parents across the community. This 15-year tradition has brought in over $300,000 for the school district—money that each participating school uses to address its specific needs. At a check presentation in January, the club gifted Carroll ISD with more than $37,000 for nearly a dozen schools including Carroll Middle, Carroll Elementary, Johnson Elementary and Durham Intermediate. The next school supply sale begins May 1 and runs through July 20. STEP UP AND DRESS UP AT INAUGURAL FUNDRAISER Stepping Stones Foundation, a nonprofit that serves at-risk homeless youth in Tarrant County, is hosting its inaugural fundraiser, Step Up and Dress Up on April 9. Head to the Southlake Hilton at 11 a.m. for a morning of mannequin-decorating, brunch and mimosas all for a great cause. Guests may purchase a mannequin to decorate for $75 or pay a $75 entrance fee to join in the festivities. All proceeds go towards Stepping Stones Foundation’s mission of serving homeless and at-risk kids. The fantastically decorated mannequins will be showcased at the benefit with prizes awarded for the most creative mannequins.
THE MIRACLE LEAGUE OF SOUTHLAKE SWINGS INTO SPRING SEASON Get ready for peanuts, crackerjack and spring baseball—The Miracle League of Southlake kicks off the spring season on March 25 at the Texas Rangers Miracle League Field in Bicentennial Park. It’s sure to be an exciting season with many players returning from the 2016 fall season. This year, The Miracle League of Southlake will schedule some games on Wednesday evenings to allow athletes to experience the thrill of playing baseball under the lights. Last season, Wednesdays were used to make up games that had been previously rained out. It was so well received by both players and coaches that Wednesday evening games are back as a regular event for all future seasons.

SOUTHLAKE KIWANIS BESTOWED THE STALCUP “HEART OF A DRAGON” AWARD For Southlake Carroll football players, the Stalcup “Heart of a Dragon” award is one of the highest honors. This year, Jackson Davis was honored as the recipient at a Southlake Kiwanis breakfast meeting held in his honor. Each year, the Kiwanis Club awards a $1,500 scholarship to a Carroll football player who embodies the character of past Dragon coach Charlie Stalcup. Southlake Carroll head football coach Hal Wasson selects a player based on leadership, determination and attitude on and off of the field. In presenting the award, Coach Wasson shared examples of Davis inspiring teammates while playing football and managing his diabetes. INAUGURAL DRAGON BASEBALL PALOOZA KICKED OFF SPRING SEASON Last month, the Southlake Carroll baseball program hosted the first-ever Dragon Baseball Palooza for DYB players. Themed “Dragons United,” the event included baseball clinics, sponsor booths with giveaways, a silent auction, an alumni-varsity game and plenty of photo ops. “Giving back to the youth league here in Southlake is just our way of paying it forward,” said head coach Larry Vucan. “The better our youth players are, the better our program will be. Working together to achieve those goals just makes sense.”

SOUTHLAKE’S JUST BRASS BAND RAISED FUNDS FOR LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY For the Just Brass Band, a Southlake youth brass band ensemble, some tunes are just naturally sweeter. During the months of November and December, the band played several concerts in Southlake Town Square to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The group raised more than $1,500 over the holidays. Junior Ethan Jezek formed the group five years ago with friends from Southlake Carroll. What began as a group of friends playing instruments for fun has turned into something bigger and more meaningful for the community. The Just Brass Band grew in size from seven to 13 players ranging in age from ninth through 12th grade. The band has raised funds for causes including cancer and Parkinson’s research.

SCRATCH KITCHEN EXPANDED TO BRING COMMUNITY MORE EATZ Your next meeting, event, party or relaxing night at home just got a little tastier: Scratch Kitchen acquired Boulevard Eatz, expanding its services into the Grapevine and Colleyville areas. Meanwhile, the top brass at Scratch Kitchen will also take over the hiring process for all of Boulevard’s catering staff. The Southlake location will be the only venue for takeout dining; catering operations will be housed in the Colleyville location that was formerly Boulevard Eatz. “This strategic alliance will give Scratch Kitchen a more visible presence in the Grapevine/Colleyville areas,” said Scratch Kitchen presidents Ted and Colby Bilsky, “as well as give the existing clientele of Boulevard Eatz more choices to enhance their dining experiences.” LUKE’S LOCKER’S RUN IN SOUTHLAKE COMES TO A CLOSE Last month, shoppers seeking new kicks or athletic apparel found a surprise at Luke’s Locker in Park Village—the store was closed. A sign posted on the door stated that “Luke’s is presently going through a challenging business cycle that has left our stores with too little inventory. We are closing this store to develop a plan to reopen it with new inventory.” Since expanding into Southlake and other suburbs, Dallasbased Luke’s Locker has experienced “several issues” that have hurt the business, according to a story on DallasNews.com. The company also closed stores in Plano, Austin, Houston and The Woodlands with plans to reopen the stores in the future. As of press time, the Southlake location is still closed.

aste Buds Kitchen (TBK) in Southlake has uncovered the recipe for compassion. By day, the local studio is bustling with creative kids, and by night, the studio is filled with adults honing their culinary chops. But on special occasions, you’ll find young chefs discovering the kitchen is more than a place to let the flour fly; it’s a destination that nourishes the soul. Since the Southlake TBK opened its doors two years ago, owner Eden Bullock has partnered with HopeKids, a national nonprofit that provides events and activities for children with life-threatening medical conditions. Bridget Asheim, executive director for the North Texas chapter of HopeKids, which serves nearly 700 families around the Metroplex, says the organization aims to provide a bright spot in kids’ lives. “HopeKids gives children something to look forward to,” she says. “Without having an event or activity to anticipate, it would only be pokes, needles and appointments.” While HopeKids hosts a variety of weekly events for children—anything from movie nights to outings at Dallas Mavericks games—TBK events are particularly special, notes Asheim.

“Without TBK, our families wouldn’t be able to experience things like decorating cookies or making pasta and pizza,” she says. “Kids can look around and see other kids just like them—maybe they have a feeding tube or they’ve lost their hair. TBK provides so much more than food.” Last fall, TBK and HopeKids teamed up to give three kid culinarians something to get excited about—they turned the kids into star chefs for a night.
BLENDING FUN -AND FUNDRAISING-
Bullock first discovered HopeKids through a close friend whose children have significant medical conditions. While TBK locations around the country work with the nonprofit Cookies for Kids Cancer (the Southlake kitchen raised nearly $3,000 last year), HopeKids was a way for Bullock to

give back locally. The partnership has become the Southlake kitchen’s biggest philanthropy. “I immediately thought HopeKids was such a wonderful way to impact families whose lives aren’t always the easiest,” Bullock says. “A lot of times, these kids have to miss out on basic things. Cooking is empowering to them.” TBK hosts small, private events for HopeKids, but Bullock and Asheim wanted to concoct something different; they wanted to give kids the ultimate culinary experience. So they decided to put budding chefs in the spotlight at HopeKids’ annual fundraising gala—let the children design the menu, prepare the food and serve their culinary masterpieces to guests. Not only would it allow the nonprofit’s donors and sponsors to connect with kids personally, it would also give children an incredible experience. Kids with a passion for cooking were encouraged to apply to be chefs at HopeKids’ Roaring Twentiesthemed gala last November. Children answered a series of interview questions and submitted their

best recipes, and their parents visited with Bullock and Asheim to share a little more about their children and how he or she could contribute. “We wanted the menu to be of the highest quality and the best recipes,” Bullock notes, “but also recipes that kids could execute. Preparing a meal is hard work—especially for a large crowd.” Three aspiring chefs, all with their own culinary visions, were selected to be HopeKids’ chefs for the gala: 11-year-old Austin, 11-year-old Harmony and 13-year-old Connor. “The chefs had very different ideas,” Bullock says, “but they were all proud to share.” Austin, one of the featured chefs, is happiest when he’s cooking. He has a heart condition, and while his mom Jennifer says he can’t hold pots and pans on his own and he isn’t tall enough to reach the stove, he loves to prepare his own foodie creations—especially when it involves his big sister and an Easy Bake oven. “He likes to cook anything. It doesn’t mean he’ll eat it, though,” says Jennifer, with a smile.

With all the medical care they receive, they’re usually in the spotlight not for a fun reason,” she

Early risers stop by as prompt as 7 a.m. for a beverage and quick bite after their morning workout. The lunchtime masses pack the blond-wood tables for a nutritious midday meal and, in the evening, the place is abuzz with a happy hour crowd that spills onto the rooftop bar for chill music and chilled drinks. You might even catch a live DJ on the deck; the restaurant gets the good times and great beats going for big games, lunch buffets or simply because it’s Tuesday. We suggest calling ahead or checking the restaurant’s Facebook page to see what’s on tap. As for the cuisine, Press Café puts the focus on freshness and sustainability, serving up housemade items ranging from baked goods to the crave-worthy veggie burger that got the attention of Texas Monthly editors. For breakfast and brunch, patrons can fuel up on protein-packed dishes such as omelets and breakfast burritos, but the Banana Walnut Waffles stand apart on Press Café’s menu. Thick and fluffy scratch-made waffles are piled high with berry compote, vanilla créme fraîche, candied walnuts and, for good measure, a slice of thick-cut bacon. This dish is enough to stave off hunger for two days. For lunch or dinner, start things off with a hearty appetizer such as a charcuterie and cheese board or peel-and-eat shrimp. The Medi Dip is particularly enticing. Grab a piece of toast, celery, squash or a yellow or purple carrot, and dunk into this zesty duo of hummus and muhammara (a hot pepper dip). When you’re ready to sink your teeth into something substantial, a range of flavorful salads, sandwiches and house specialties abound. The Ancient Grain Rice Bowl (sautéed fresh veggies, farro, quinoa, green tea rice, avocado and spicy soy glaze) will be the best thing you eat all day. Pump up the protein by adding chicken, steak, scallops or shrimp for a few bucks more. Be sure to ask your server about the daily special—a different sandwich, pasta and fresh fish rotate on the menu. Press Café keeps the fun flowing with craft beer and many wines and cocktails under $10. All you need is a great spot on the patio to soak up spring’s glorious return. Win the Day (or at Least the Meal) Bread Winners Café & Bakery makes every mealtime victorious People have caught on. Bread Winners Café & Bakery, the restaurant that has been a Dallas icon since 1994, has moved to the western portion of the Metroplex. The acclaimed eatery recently opened a new location in Trophy Club, and residents from all over north Tarrant and south Denton counties are flocking to this beloved bakery, bar and café. In case you haven’t been yet, the place is typically packed. On our visit for Sunday brunch, we had to make a few circles around the parking lot to find a spot. Once inside, we encountered a 20-minute wait, which wasn’t too bad considering the cumbersome parking situation. Servers buzzed around like wellorganized bees, delivering enticing plates of food to patrons at the bar and at tables all around the bustling dining areas and covered patio. We waited near the bakery, where a variety of baked treats called our name until the hostess did. Bread Winners is open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend brunch, but fans agree the best time to go is during breakfast or brunch. A mimosa, Bloody Mary or even a specialty coffee drink, like a vanilla cardamom cappuccino, is always a good start to the day. Our server brought us complimentary chunks

of muffin and bread to tide us over while we perused the menu, which includes many gussied-up versions of brunch classics. Our party particularly enjoyed the Jalapeño Bacon-Cheddar Waffles, which are served with a crispy chicken breast, cream gravy and hot sauce. A little tin of maple syrup on the side balances the dish’s savory and spicy flavors. For lunch and dinner at Bread Winners, expect an overload of comforting favorites such as hearty sandwiches, burgers and meatloaf. The restaurant serves an indulgent array of dishes, but there are certainly lighter bites on the menu. The Honey Glazed Salmon Salad (greens, cherry tomatoes, asparagus, onion, oranges and lemon shallot vinaigrette) is satisfying on the healthier side of the menu. For those craving a craft cocktail or two, The Quarter Bar pours some of the best around. The Cucumber Daiquiri (rum, lime and orange flower) is wonderfully refreshing. As for the overall vibe at Bread Winners, it’s laidback with classic architectural touches, a rooftop space and courtyard, and plenty of old-world charm. Throw in some ’80s classic rock bumping on the sound system, and it’s an eclectic experience for all the senses. No matter what you order, you’ll eat (and drink) like a champion at Bread Winners.

Better with Age Taverna Rossa shows how great drinks take time Your cocktail is getting old. Old as in aged—barrel-aged. While barrel-aging cocktails is a rising trend in the bar scene, it’s also making waves in people’s homes. Barrel-aging at home was one of the hottest trends of 2016, according to National Restaurant News. All you need is a mini barrel (most range from $50 to $70 online) and a solid recipe— like this one from Taverna Rossa. Bartenders will age the cocktail anywhere from three weeks to three months. You could have time in a bottle, but time in a barrel tastes so much better.

INSTRUCTIONS: Starting with the bourbon, mix the ingredients in a barrel. Plug the barrel and give it a hearty swirl and shake. Wait as patiently as possible for at least three weeks. Test every week or so to monitor changes in taste, color and aroma. When the aging is complete, strain the cocktail over a fine-mesh strainer and serve over a large ice cube.

THE YOGA RETREAT Local yoga studio brings balance and big dreams to community
R
anjeeta Rath didn’t always love yoga. Okay, that’s putting it mildly. “I hated it,” says the local mogul and instructor at The Yoga Retreat. She started practicing yoga when she was 10 years old and living in India. Her father told her that it would help with her dance technique, so she gave it a try. “I didn’t like it at first, but I when I stopped doing it, something felt like it was missing,” she says. Rath returned to practicing yoga and fell in love with it. “It became my second life,” she says. Now, she’s hoping to instill that love of yoga in her clients at The Yoga Retreat and create a yoga community in Southlake in the process. Rath says Southlake was an obvious choice for her family once they moved to Texas. Her husband is a trauma surgeon in Arlington, and until recently, Rath worked there at HCA. The duo settled into Southlake with their children because of its location and exemplary school district, and Rath realized that the nearest yoga studio was too far away. So, she started her own. The Yoga Retreat opened its doors in August 2016, and is already making waves as a unique spot for veterans and newcomers. Rath conducted extensive research to identify what could set her studio apart, and decided to install infrared heaters. These have a healing effect on the muscles without affecting yoga practitioners in any other way. Big-name studios in Los Angeles and New York use the same heaters, but that’s not the only thing that sets Rath’s retreat apart. Her studio teaches Vinyasa yoga, a “power style” that is hard to find in the area. Furthermore, The Yoga Retreat offers classes for kids—a practice that’s very important to Rath. “Kids nowadays are always in ‘go, go, go’ mode,” she says. “Yoga calms the mind, and helps you create energy by teaching you to breathe properly. If you start practicing yoga at a young age, you’ll have more balance, self-respect, clarity and energy than you thought possible.”

Rath, who holds an MBA in finance from Pepperdine, recognizes that yoga may not seem like everyone’s thing. However, she’s confident her client-first approach to business will help people realize that yoga is for everyone, and if anyone is hesitant, they can always just give it a try. “Yoga is a journey, and everyone’s journey is different,” she says. “My goal is to have you leave my class and say it’s the best class you’ve ever taken,” she says. “If you’re happy, I’ve done my job.”

iversity is on the rise in DallasFort Worth. While 20 years ago DFW was home to a mostly homogenous mix of residents, today the Metroplex is the fifth most racially diverse metropolitan area in the United States, according to the International Mission Board. Nearly 20 percent of Metroplex residents are foreign-born and approximately one in three people in the DFW area speak a language other than English at home. What’s more is that out of 3,000-plus counties in the U.S., Dallas County is the 10th most ethno-linguistically diverse in the nation. The City of Southlake is growing in diversity each year and one club for adult residents aims to celebrate that diversity. Formed in 2010, Southlake’s International Culture Club (ICC) is dedicated to learning and celebrating various cultures through interaction among members from more than 30 countries. The club is open to anyone interested in sharing cultures and ideas from around the globe.
A CLUB BASED ON UNDERSTANDING When people move to a different country, all familiarity goes out the door. Throw in potential language barriers, unfamiliar social norms and the need to adapt to new everything, and becoming acclimated in a new community can be overwhelming. Southlake resident Ginny Bumagny is familiar with the challenges—and joys—of adapting to new cultures. Bumagny’s parents, both of Chinese descent, emigrated from Indonesia to Brazil. Bumagny was born in Sao Paulo and raised 78 • MAR 17
in a household with three different languages and traditions. As a result, she grew up with a love for all cultures. When Bumagny settled in Southlake as an adult, she craved a way to connect with like-minded people who shared her affinity for embracing the world’s cultures. So, she co-founded the ICC seven years ago.

The club was founded as a nonprofit organization with the mission of learning, celebrating and participating in various cultures to increase understanding and knowledge through interaction, education and charity. “The organization welcomes people of different cultures and traditions,” explains Bumagny. “We also assist individuals of international descent and those in need of information or services. In general, the ICC helps people to understand and accept individual differences to make this world a better place—and it starts in our small community in Southlake.”
EMBRACING CUSTOMS AND LANGUAGES Celebrating other cultures is why Laura Bussell decided to join the ICC in the first place. “I think we better ourselves and our community when we strive to understand others,” says Bussell, who serves as communications co-chairman, book club chairman and movie club chairman for the ICC. “I’ve met people from all over the world in this club. They have all provided colorful enrichment to my life.” Members of the ICC book club read novels about other countries or by authors from other countries to gain additional insights into different customs. Last year, books from Saudi Arabia, Russia and The Bahamas, among others, were on the list. But since not everyone has time to settle in with a good novel, the ICC also started a movie group that screens films from around the world. Recently, Bussell hosted movie night at her house where members enjoyed the film “The Patience Stone,” which is based on a book of the same name by Atiq Rahimi of Afghanistan. For those interested in Spanish culture, the Café y Conversation group meets twice a month, and native Spanish speakers help advanced students practice conversational Spanish. Bussell has been studying conversational Spanish for more than 10 years with ICC member Maria Mahan, and now she helps Spanish speakers understand “Texan” while they help her with Spanish. Meanwhile, members Esther Amundsen and her sister, Irma, have created a class and curriculum to help beginning Spanish speakers. If French is more your style, ICC SouthlakeStyle.com

offers lessons with a native French speaker, in addition to Frenchbased events. Bussell and other ICC members also embrace the all-powerful, magic elixir known as coffee. At monthly coffee meetings, members pass around foods from their home countries, and the club plans interesting programs to learn more about others. A recent meeting featured Connie Cooley, president of the Southlake Historical Society. “She talked about the importance of investigating cultures different from native Texas and showed others our own culture as well so we can learn from one another,” explains Bussell. There’s also a philanthropic element to the ICC, which operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. ICC members are currently involved in area charities including Kids Matter International, Christmas is for Children and Spokes for Hopes. Ultimately, Bumagny hopes that the club fosters an understanding that spreads to other communities.
GROWTH AND UNITY The ICC is always looking for new members—and new ways to embrace the many cultures of the world. Although Bumagny is

stepping down from her role as president due to her husband’s relocation, she still plans to return to Southlake to visit friends from the club. Bumagny believes that the ICC will continue to prosper and grow under new president, Elsa Otero-Kackley, a native of Columbia. Stepping into a leadership role was natural for Otero-Kackley, who first volunteered to fill the secretary position only a couple months after the ICC was founded. “Sharing my own culture and learning about other cultures around the world has been a passion of mine since I was a teen,” she says. “I used to send postcards from Colombia to Russia. I have always been connected to humans from all over the world, and I am interested in their traditions and cultures. The club has been growing and evolving since its foundation, which indicates that the mission is still relevant.” Otero-Kackley’s favorite activity with the ICC is organizing programs that help members discover the array of interesting people in Southlake. She treasures the priceless friendships she has made over the years through the club. Members need not be born in another country to benefit from
the ICC. Membership is all about expanding personal horizons by learning about others. “Our membership is like a beautiful landscape with all colors in it,” said Bumagny. “Anyone can join the club, whether you are from a foreign country, married to a foreign spouse, interested in travelling or seeking understanding from different cultures.” In a time rife with divisiveness, the International Culture Club is a refreshing reminder that all people deserve a chance to have their voices heard and cultures appreciated. The ICC and the community of Southlake show the beauty and unity that are possible when we embrace different experiences and customs. The club’s doors are always open, so come on in and learn more about your neighbors. You might just learn something about yourself, too.

GOOD GRACE | FOR MORE THAN A DECADE, SHONDA SCHAEFER HAS LED THE WAY AT GRACE WITH A SINCERE VISION TO HELP NEIGHBORS IN NEED
W
hen you think of GRACE, Shonda Schaefer’s face likely comes to mind. The bubbly executive director with a megawatt smile seems to be everywhere in the community—from chamber events and board meetings to parties and black-tie galas. It’s all part of her job to educate others on the challenges and needs of our community’s most vulnerable population. When Schaefer took the helm at GRACE in 2006, she accepted a responsibility to serve those without a voice, those who have fallen on hard times and those who reach out for help. WHAT I’VE ENJOYED THE MOST IN THE PAST 10 YEARS: The people, hands down. GRACE attracts some of the most amazing men and women who want to be part of something much bigger than themselves. The diverse group of social workers, medical professionals, pantry managers, resale staff, fundraisers, administrators and community leaders are absolutely the best in their fields. You won’t find a more cohesive and compassionate group of people anywhere.

I KNEW I WANTED TO HELP OTHERS WHEN: I was a child and heard a particularly disturbing story on the news about a family who had lost everything in a fire. I asked my mom, “Why doesn’t someone do something?” She responded, “Aren’t you someone?” That statement hit me hard then, but has been a bit of a mantra ever since.
THE MOST MEANINGFUL PART OF MY WORK IS: seeing the transformation of people here at GRACE. It is not uncommon to find clients who become donors or mentors, donors who provide direct assistance and volunteers who come to fulfill a school or court obligation and stay because they love what they are doing. This place has a way of moving people in ways we can’t even imagine.
I HAVE ALWAYS ENJOYED: working with this population of clients. I find their determination and ingenuity inspiring. The working-class poor of our community find themselves in a unique subset—too wealthy to qualify for governmental assistance, yet too poor to get ahead. They can typically make ends meet but when faced with a crisis they are unable to pull out of it. However, donors and volunteers help bridge the gaps, keeping families from certain homelessness. Facilitating the giving and receiving is what GRACE is all about. It’s neighbor helping neighbor. Being part of the process has been a true honor and privilege. A TYPICAL DAY FOR ME IS: filled with such variety. One day I’ll be working with the staff at Donation Station to collect items from cars and sort into bins, and later I may meet with a social worker who has a difficult case and needs to talk through the case plan. MY VISION FOR GRACE IS: to be a service organization that provides hope and guidance for families in crisis. We hold ourselves to five core values: compassion, excellence, respect, service and stewardship. In every decision, I test myself to those values. I want this organization to be the best in

MOST PEOPLE DON’T REALIZE THAT GRACE: provides food, clothing, healthcare, housing, financial education, senior isolation support, counseling and financial assistance in addition to operating three resale stores and a full-service Donation Station. Our annual operating budget is over $4 million, and we employ over 60 people.
I’D DESCRIBE MY LEADERSHIP STYLE AS: being a servant leader. To me, that means it’s my responsibility to find my own personal and professional talents and then figure out how to help those around me find theirs. WHAT EXCITES ME THE MOST ABOUT MY JOB: is every day is filled with new opportunities, new challenges and new people. And yet, I see consistency and loyalty from this community. It’s pretty amazing to wake up every day and be excited to go to work. I truly have the best job in the world! I’D ASK THE COMMUNITY TO: include the GRACE mission and the families we serve in your personal prayers. MY FAVORITE GUILTY PLEASURE: Symphony chocolate bars with toffee and almonds. I usually eat half a candy bar every night. SOMETHING THAT MADE ME LAUGH RECENTLY: was seeing each of my grown kids and my macho husband dressed like elves in their Christmas jammies. I giggled until I had a stomachache!

Green Party Go all-out Irish at the 38th annual Dallas St. Patrick’s Parade and Festival

et your green gear ready: The biggest St. Patrick’s Day bash in the region is about to go down in Big D. Grab your friends, schedule an Uber or hop on the DART, and spend March 11 amongst a sea of green at the 38th annual Dallas St. Patrick’s Parade and Festival. Billed as the “largest St. Patrick’s Parade in the Southwest,” this all-day event boasts a procession of more than 90 festive floats with over 1,700 participants including marching bands, bagpipers, dancers and other entertainers. Enjoy the festivities in a crowd of over 125,000 people lining the streets all decked out in emerald attire. The two-mile parade route kicks off at Greenville Avenue and ends at SMU Boulevard at 75/Central Expressway. So no matter where you grab a spot, you’ll have a great view of all the green goings-on! Sponsored again this year by the Dallas Mavericks, the parade is free to attend along the parade route. If you prefer a seat, just hop over to the Meadow’s Building area for paid bleacher seating. Proceeds benefit the GAABA Scholarship Fund. Come ready to party—you’ll find a variety of local restaurants, bars and music venues participating in this spirited Irish block party to help you get your food, drink and dance on all day long.
