take me out to the ballgame … and brunch

Peanuts and Cracker Jack get all the glory, but for me, the ultimate baseball food is ice cream in a souvenir helmet cup. It’s a treat my husband presented to me on our first date at a Texas Rangers vs. Houston Astros game. He made me swoon with that sweet offering of cookies ’n cream on a balmy summer evening. Fast forward a decade or so, and we’ve accumulated many of those helmet cups. And we’ve grown from first date to a family that’s head-over-cleats for baseball. The kids who play on Southlake’s Dragon Dreamers youth baseball team know just how magical the sport can be. This summer, they’ll embark on the adventure of a lifetime—playing at the iconic Cooperstown Dreams Park in New York. Two players with special needs will share in the experience as assistant coaches. It’s about more than baseball, though. “This is an opportunity for kids to be proud of what they’re doing,” says Michele Ciccone with the Dragon Dreamers. Turn to page 12 for the story on this incredible team. Baseball buzz has reached a fever pitch all around. The Texas Rangers and the City of Arlington broke ground on the $250 million Texas Live! entertainment complex. It’s no doubt a decades-long vision come to life for the team—and the town. Hear more about the project and the Rangers from Rob Matwick, Southlake resident and the team’s executive vice president of business operations, on page 66. Before you catch your next Rangers game, stop by one of the area’s best restaurants for brunch and make a day of it. In this year’s Readers’ Choice survey, readers cast their votes for best brunch across seven maple-syrup-drenched categories. Flip to page 51 to see the local favorites. Here’s to ice cream in a helmet, whipped cream on a waffle and mimosas all around.

It has changed the way I see life and made me realize that we are often guided to offer our talents to serve and help others. It is important to listen to God’s winks in life and ask, “Are the things that are happening really a coincidence or something much bigger?” I also love the book “The Secret.” This is a special book given to me by my dad. It created the power of positivity in my life. Michele Ciccone with Southlake’s Dragon Dreamers

INTO THE WATER PAULA HAWKINS MAY 2

A Case of Whodunnit The river that runs through town carries with it more than just flora debris, just as the investigation of women found at the bottom brings up more than just dead bodies. History begins to repeat itself when a single mom is discovered in the river months after a teenage girl met the same fate. Secrets and deception are just some of the tools bestselling author Paula Hawkins uses to once again pull her readers into a world of psychological suspense. Hawkins’ debut novel “The Girl on the Train” was a worldwide hit. Expect nothing less from her latest book, “Into the Water.”

In fact, “Guardians of the Galaxy” (2014) earned more than $770 million at the worldwide box office. Peter Quill (Chris Pratt, “Passengers,” “Jurrasic World”) and his motley crew took viewers on a ride through the galaxy in the original film, which revolved around the Orb’s whereabouts—and saving the universe. What the power of the Awesome Mixtape #1 can do! In “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” fans are reminded that Awesome Mixtape #2 was discovered and a new adventure begins. The film also stars Zoe Saldana (“Star Trek Beyond”) who returns as Gamora, and features the voices of Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper.

THIS SUMMER, SOUTHLAKE’S DRAGON DREAMERS WILL EXPERIENCE THE BASEBALL OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFETIME.

L

et’s take a minute and think back to the summer when you were 12 years old. What highlights come to mind? An extra-large scoop of ice cream? The world’s highest cannonball splash? Plenty of grass and dirt stains? (Sorry, Mom!) For one Southlake 12U baseball team, the summer of ’17 will always be remembered as the one when dreams came true. This is the summer the Dragon Dreamers will set out for Cooperstown Dreams Park—site of the American Youth Baseball Hall of Fame—alongside two children, dubbed assistant coaches, with special needs. And what a summer it will be.

CREATING THE DREAM It all started with a simple idea. Many years ago, New York’s Coach Lou Presutti and his father visited the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, the home of baseball, when a thought struck them: What if every young baseball player could experience the

joy of America’s favorite pastime here, in the place where the sport originated? After coaching baseball for 34 years, Coach Presutti and his wife Linda decided it was time to turn this idea into a reality, opening Cooperstown Dreams Park in 1996 to the excitement of baseball fans and players across America. And so, a new tradition was born. As former New York residents, Southlake mom and Dragon Dreamers operations manager/treasurer, Michele Ciccone, and her husband and Dragon Dreamers coach, David Ciccone, have long been friends with the Presutti family. They liken the experience of the park as on par with the country’s most-coveted theme parks. The couple had the opportunity to bring their own sons to the park as young players. “We like to call it the Disney World for baseball,” Michele gushes. “You feel like you’re in a different time and place when you’re there. Coach Lou had two philosophies when he built the park: to dream dreams and MAY 17 • 13

to be your own hero. This is an opportunity for kids to be proud of what they’re doing.” For the past decade, hundreds of baseball teams have traveled to Cooperstown to enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime week where they truly experience what it’s like to be a Major League Baseball player. They live on campus, do their laundry onsite, and of course, play ball on the iconic fields where baseball began. The only catch? Players must be 12 years old or younger. “It’s the last year of Little League,” Michele explains. “A lot of kids after age 12 don’t continue with baseball because it gets really serious and competitive. It’s kind of the last hoorah for these kids.”

BUILDING THE TEAM But this year, it’s also the beginning of something bigger … whether it’s a deeper interest in the sport, a greater understanding for others and sometimes, even an unexpected friendship. That’s because this year marks a connection with players with special needs—Sam Kline and Wyatt Kwentus have been invited to join the team as they practice, play, and well, eat plenty of pizza (as Dragon Dreamers coaches David Ciccone and Dave Gamache can attest) while bonding as a team headed for Cooperstown this July. And it began, once again, with a little inspiration from the late Coach Lou Presutti himself. 14 • MAY 17

“Coach Lou was here for the opening day of the Miracle League of Southlake in 2015,” says John Slocum, secretary of the Southlake Dragon Dreamers. Slocum played a key role in the development and successful launch of the city’s league, and knew its players were destined for Cooperstown. It just took a little teamwork. “In his speech, Lou indicated that he wanted to develop a relationship between Cooperstown and Southlake,” Slocum explains. “We got in touch with [Southlake mayor] Laura Hill, drew up some guidelines and established a relationship between five groups: the Miracle League of Southlake, Southlake Baseball Association, City of Southlake, Southlake Carroll School Board and Cooperstown. The five groups agreed to work together to put a program in place where kids with special needs were involved.” Now, two years later, the hard work is paying off. Kline and Kwentus have already made a great impact on the Dragon Dreamers, but it shouldn’t come as a surprise. After all, Coach Ciccone says this kind of open spirit was one of the qualifications for being chosen for his 12U team. “We looked at their attitudes, their personalities, their willingness to learn,” explains Coach Ciccone of the tryouts. “And a critical part was buying into the understanding of what the team was all about. It’s more than just playing baseball. We told the parents we’re going to be buddies with the Miracle League.” The result was a group of kids—both boys and girls—as passionate about the sport of baseball as about growing as people. Southlake mom Lisa DeBord has already seen the impact the program has made in her son Walker’s life, striking up new friendships along the way. When given the choice to play for a variety of established teams in the area after his Triple A/ Majors team disbanded, he chose the Southlake Dragon Dreamers because of its Miracle League connection. “For almost all of Walker’s life, we have known that he was an old soul, deeply connected to God and those around him in profound and unexplained ways,” DeBord says. “On the first day of practice, where the Miracle League players were present, we watched as he befriended the kids and engaged and encouraged those around him. He told us, ‘I want them to feel like they are an important part of our team.’” This inclusive attitude makes this year’s path to Cooperstown so special. Sure, it’s nice to win, which the team was successful in doing even during its first game together. But the memories made during movie nights at the coaches’ homes, the dinners out as a team and the time spent learning by example as they watch Southlake’s high school baseball teams cheer each other on are truly life-changing. “We’re more than just a team going to Cooperstown,” Michele explains. “Our goal is to have this be more than just baseball; we want every child to be involved in everything—the practices, fundraisers, tournaments, pizza parties and social events.”

EXPANDING THE MOVEMENT Dr. Mary Johnston, executive director for special programs for Carroll ISD, also assisted with selecting the coaches with special needs. “This is a great step in involving all players in the game of baseball,” she says. “I hope this summer encourages Cooperstown teams from across the United States to include students with special needs as coaches and part of this unforgettable experience.” Ideally, teams including players with special needs would be welcomed to Cooperstown during the same week, having the unique opportunity to play against one another for an unforgettable experience.

“People are very supportive of baseball in our city,” Mayor Hill says. “We love embracing all of our youth in the Dragon tradition. He says the restaurant’s menu is special because it pairs unconventional ingredients with those that are more well-known and traditional—like those found in the tenderloin bruschetta (tomato jam, arugula and pesto). et’s face it: Moms’ handbags contain a lot of stuff. Miscellaneous snacks. Random toys. Crumpled tissues. Wouldn’t it be nice if women had a chic way to transport this never-ending hodgepodge from their kids? The Teegan satchel from Kate Spade’s Cameron Street collection fits the bill perfectly. Not only is it made from durable and easy-to-clean calfskin leather, in classic black or toasted wheat (shown), but it’s a real stunner, too. With its signature striped interior lining, polished gold-tone hardware and a structured silhouette, the Teegan is such a beauty of a bag that Mom will want to immediately document its existence via social media—after she posts a few pics of her adorable kiddos, of course. When moms are on the move, they don’t have time to switch out bags. They

need a smart everyday bag that works whether they’re jetting to the office, rushing to a PTO meeting or shuttling their kids from school to practice to select softball games on the weekend. Wherever Mom’s packed schedule takes her, the Teegan is ready to keep up. This polished and professional satchel can also be worn as a hands-free cross-body bag for dashing around town. Whether Mom zips open the top and reaches for lipstick, hand sanitizer or a spare mouth guard for her favorite little QB, she won’t have to dig around for it. The Teegan’s three separate, spacious compartments allow for streamlined organization. Despite all the handy pockets, this bag is far from clunky. It’s lightweight and just the right size for toting the essentials—along with whatever kids happen to hand over with a “Here, Mom!” before they giggle and run off. When it comes down to it, the Teegan is quite simply perfection in purse form. Gift one to a special mom in your life or, ladies, splurge on one for yourself. With its summery hue and subtle sophistication, the Teegan feels like an indulgence, but just remember: it’s really for the kids. They have a lot of stuff and they need you to carry it. . reakfast is the most important meal of the day, but brunch is the most important meal of the weekend. We polled readers in a two-part survey on their favorite brunch destinations, honing in on best brunch bites, beverages and atmosphere. Out of 20 area establishments, seven finalists rose to the top. Brunching used to be reserved for special occasions—raise your Bellini if you have Mother’s Day reservations this month—but not anymore. Nearly half of survey respondents enjoy brunch every month, and one in five make it part of their regular routine. Is there anything better than a bubbly mimosa and some bacon and eggs to kick off the weekend? Seize your Saturday and Sunday mornings at one of the best spots for brunch according to Southlake Style readers.

Prepare for your Sunday Funday to be in full force at Another Broken Egg Café. This buzzy brunch hotspot offers dozens of dishes and drinks that are worth waking up for—and then waiting in a line out the door before you actually get a taste. With nearly a third of the votes, Another Broken Egg Café won for Best Brunch Overall, followed by Old West Café and Bread Winners. Depending on your order, Another Broken Egg Café will either kick your day into high gear or inspire you to crawl back under the covers for a nap. The menu is packed with brunch-perfect dishes ranging from waffles to burgers to, of course, a variety of egg dishes. General manager Angel Guzman says the Crabcake Benny is the local favorite. Two grilled, jumbo lump crab cakes are served on an English muffin and topped with poached eggs and Andouille-infused Hollandaise sauce. This dish alone makes the wait worth it. Other popular options include Waffle Sliders— essentially gourmet breakfast sandwiches with Belgian waffles in place of the bun—and Lemon Blueberry Goat Cheese Pancakes. This dish merges the fresh flavors of blueberry and lemon with the rich creaminess of goat cheese. It’s the stuff breakfast dreams are made of. But don’t try to replicate at home; leave it to the pros. “Our made-to-order dishes are chef-inspired,” says Guzman. “We use the highest-quality ingredients available, whether it’s farm-fresh eggs, pure squeezed orange juice or a variety of superfoods.” Take your brunch experience up a notch with a specialty beverage such as the Spiked Nutella Iced Latte. Cold-brew coffee, Nutella and RumChata come together in a Mason jar topped off with whipped cream, a strip of crispy bacon and a beignet. Indulgent? Yes. But do you need it in your life? Also yes. “It’s a loaded treat,” Guzman says. Another Broken Egg Café understands what brunch is meant to be: an opportunity to linger with family and friends over sumptuous food and drinks. Breakfast happens daily, but brunch is a special affair. When it comes to the area’s best brunch, Southlake Style readers say it doesn’t get better than Another Broken Egg Café. Rise and shine!

There’s no denying Del Frisco’s Grille makes brunch fun, with flavorful twists on brunch classics (Red Velvet Belgian Waffle with Vanilla-Spiked Cream Cheese, anyone?) and handcrafted cocktails that get the weekend party started, even if it’s only noon. In our survey, Del Frisco’s Grille garnered 26 percent of the vote for Best Beverages, with Brio Tuscan Grill and Wildwood Grill rounding out the top three restaurants in this category. If there’s one thing people love about brunch, it’s the day drinking. Del Frisco’s Grille delivers many enticing libations, from a build-your-own Bloody Mary to a carafe of mimosas. And with summer on the horizon, there’s nothing quite like a sangria on the patio to breeze into your weekend. It’s a beverage made for sunshine sipping. Whatever brunch beverage you choose, it’s bound to be good. “We pride ourselves on crafting our cocktails using the freshest ingredients, sourced as locally as possible,” says Gemma Brady, general manager. Whether you prefer to drink mimosas to your heart’s content or opt for one of the restaurant’s many handcrafted cocktails, Southlake Style readers pick Del Frisco’s Grille as the place for a boozy brunch. So grab a spot on the patio, kick back with your brunch libation of choice and enjoy the buzz.

Brio Tuscan Grille is everything a brunch restaurant should be. Its menu is clever and inspired, and the entire space is elegant and comfortable, with ample seating indoors and outdoors. The restaurant is also prominently situated in the heart of Town Square. With a gorgeous patio overlooking the fountains, it’s ideal for brunching al fresco. With 25 percent of the vote, Brio won for Best Atmosphere, with Del Frisco’s Grille and Wildwood Grill ranking second and third, respectively. Brio is sophisticated but also has a relaxed vibe that’s essential to a good brunch. Here, guests can linger over a Bloody Mary pitcher while enjoying something sweet or savory from the sizeable brunch menu. “We want people to feel relaxed when they’re here,” says manager Morgan Page. “We want it to be an enjoyable experience from start to finish. We work very hard to create the right ambiance—from the music level to the décor—so guests can have a great experience.” Your brunch bunch will certainly enjoy the meal indoors, but the patio is the place to be at Brio Tuscan Grille. It’s a prime spot for people watching over a pitcher of Sangria Rosa and an order of Beef Carpacio.

When a standard short stack just won’t do, make your way to Malai Kitchen. The Vietnamese/Thai restaurant in Park Village offers brunch staples reimagined in the best possible way, plus a slew of globally inspired dishes you didn’t even know you could order for brunch. With 24 percent of the vote, the restaurant won for Most Unique Brunch Fare, followed by Another Broken Egg Café in second and Bread Winners in third. Malai Kitchen aims to entice with a taste of something off the beaten brunch path. “We believe people’s palates are changing, and they’re interested in something different,” says owner Yasmin Wages. “We want people to be more willing to step outside their boundaries and try something new.” Brunchers particularly enjoy the Thai Eggs Benedict (coconut biscuits heaped with spinach, Thai basil, shrimp and poached eggs). The Egg Congee, which happens to be one of the world’s most popular breakfast dishes, is another authentic offering at Malai Kitchen. “It’s similar to a savory rice porridge,” Wages explains. “It’s a nutritious way to start the day.” If the usual brunch fare puts you to sleep, Malai Kitchen will wake you right up. And who knows—you just might find yourself craving Hoi An Hash or Pho Bo to start your day.

Just outside the bubble is Old West Café, a family-friendly outpost so beloved for breakfast and brunch that it won the top spot in two categories in our Readers’ Choice survey: Best Savory Items and Best Menu Variety. A quarter of readers picked Old West Café for its savory brunch offerings, followed by Another Broken Egg Café and Bread Winners, respectively. Loyal patrons can’t get enough of the down-home cooking and solidly good food, from the Panhandlers (the restaurant’s layered skillet breakfast) to the Sinkers ’n Slippers (slang for biscuits and gravy). Old West Café puts heart and soul into every dish and people know it, as evidenced by the packed parking lot, consistently long wait every weekend and a near-perfect 4.5-star review on Yelp. The restaurant prides itself on serving classic American favorites in a no-fuss, relaxed setting. If you’re feeding out-of-towners and want to give them a taste of Texas, this is the place to go. It’s hard to get more Lone Star State than a forkful of egg, jalapeño, chorizo and pepper-jack cheese in the Spicy Panhandler. Other popular savory items include biscuits and gravy (the restaurant offers a half dozen mouthwatering variations), as well as OWC Cowboy Hats—eggs Benedict with a unique twist. Regulars also favor Old West Café’s plate-sized omelets, which are made with three eggs and plenty of cheese, veggies and meats. It’s enough food to share, but we doubt you’ll want to. Whatever you crave to break the fast, this local favorite has you covered. Old West Café won for Best Variety with 30 percent of the vote. Bread Winners followed in second place and Another Broken Egg Café landed in third. Brunch’s most important decision is savory or sweet, and at Old West Café, the choice is entirely up to you. The menu covers all the breakfast bases, from sandwiches and grits to pancakes, French toast, and fruit and yogurt parfaits. Kick off your day with something hearty or indulge in something sweet— Southlake Style readers know they’ll always rustle up a good meal at Old West Café.

For a sweet start to the day, Bread Winners takes the cake. The bakery, bar and café is readers’ go-to spot for the sweeter side of brunch. Bread Winners came in first place for Best Sweet Selections with nearly 30 percent of the vote, with Old West Café and Another Broken Egg Café rounding out the top three. A family-owned Dallas institution since 1994, Bread Winners recently opened a Trophy Club location, bringing a bevy of brunch favorites to Tarrant County. “We are so proud and honored to be recognized by the Southlake community,” says Cindy Hughes, who owns the restaurant with her husband, Jim. “We’ve been looking to be in this area for years and we’re so happy to be here.” Whether you’re hungry for a gooey cinnamon roll or a thick and fluffy waffle, a smorgasbord of options abound. Hughes says one of the restaurant’s most popular brunch dishes is the Normandy. This dish consists of sliced sourdough stuffed with cream cheese and raspberry jam, and then topped with berries and whipped cream. Let that sink in for a moment. The Bananas Foster Waffle is another favorite among regulars. A crispy waffle is drenched in warm banana caramel sauce and crowned with fresh banana and whipped cream. You’ll want to polish off the whole thing, but just save room for the bakery’s beloved Chocolate Seduction Cake. With alternating cake layers of German chocolate, devil’s food and white chocolate on a brownie foundation, it’s enough to satisfy any chocolate craving for an entire week. Which, coincidentally, means it will be time to go out for brunch again.

TEXAS RANGERS EXECUTIVE V.P. OF BUSINESS OPERATIONS 66 • MAY 17

SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

FIVE MINUTES with ...

THE TEXAS RANGERS EXECUTIVE WANTS FANS TO HAVE THE BEST BASEBALL EXPERIENCE POSSIBLE The next time you head to Globe Life Park to cheer on the Texas Rangers, Southlake resident Rob Matwick is working behind the scenes to make sure you have a phenomenal time. As executive vice president of business operations for the Rangers, Matwick oversees all aspects of ballpark operations. MY EARLIEST BASEBALL MEMORY: is walking onto Forbes Field [former home of the Pittsburgh Pirates]. I remember the chalk line and how green the grass was. WHAT I FIND MOST INTERESTING ABOUT BASEBALL: is that, fundamentally, the game itself hasn’t changed much. It’s been played for more than 100 years, and it has been consistent. I’ve always loved the game. IN A NUTSHELL, MY JOB IS TO: take care of the building and make sure guests have an outstanding experience, from the time they pull into the parking lot to when they get back in their cars. MY CAREER IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL BEGAN WHEN: I got a call out of the blue in 1985 by Dick Wagner, who had just been named the president and GM of the Houston Astros. I had been recommended to him for a job he thought I might be interested in. I’ve worked in Major League Baseball ever since. I GOT MY START WITH THE RANGERS WHEN: Nolan Ryan contacted me about a potential job opportunity. He had just been named president of the Rangers and was looking to put his staff together. I’ve known Nolan since 1985, and the idea of working side by side with him intrigued me. I came here in June 2008. I’m blessed to be part of the game for as long as I have been. A CAREER HIGHLIGHT FOR ME: was when I was with the Astros the first time they went to the World Series in 2005. I was also with the Rangers the first time they went to the World Series in 2010 and again in 2011. It’s cool that I was with both franchises for their first World

SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

Series appearances. The only thing we haven’t accomplished is winning one! I’m 0-3 right now. THE RANGERS CULTURE IS CENTERED AROUND: family. Leadership sets the example. We’ve had families come from other organizations, and they always talk about how they’re treated so well and feel so welcomed here. It’s a testament to our leadership and our people. BASEBALL HAS EVOLVED IN THAT: the players are bigger, stronger and faster. How we market the game is different. Certainly we’ve gone through a renaissance with new ballparks and the amenities we can offer fans today. There’s also increased connectivity to the game. I can watch any game on my phone. It’s really a credit to MLB and the industry. A TYPICAL DAY FOR ME INVOLVES: working with The Cordish Companies on the $250 million Texas Live! project. We’ve put ourselves in a position to do some transformational things with the franchise. We’ve solicited fan feedback so fans can send us their thoughts. We’re engaging all our staff, and we’re working with the City of Arlington to ensure we live up to their expectations. We have many irons in the fire, so my days are always full. WHEN IT COMES TO TEXAS LIVE!, I’M MOST EXCITED THAT: we, as an organization, will be able to deliver on the promise of development. We have a great facility with Globe Life Park. AT&T Stadium is magnificent. But we’re missing a piece. The Cordish Companies has done a phenomenal job developing anchor retail and development. I can’t wait for it to open in 2020. I WANT RANGERS FANS TO KNOW THAT: there will be so many different concepts at Texas Live! They may come and have a favorite place, but they can also visit and experience something new. It’s going to be a tremendous experience for fans—it’ll be a destination people can visit 365 days a year.

Behold the Bold NIKKEI MERGES THE EXOTIC FLAVORS OF TWO DISTINCT CULTURES

T NIKKEI 2404 Cedar Springs Road Dallas 214.983.1525 NikkeiDallas.com

70 • MAY 17

here’s a buzz in Dallas around Nikkei, a hot new restaurant that specializes in Japanese-Peruvian fusion cuisine. The word Nikkei, pronounced “nik-ay,” is an expression for Japanese immigrants who left Japan and settled in new countries, one of which was Peru beginning in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The cuisine at Nikkei is a creative merging of flavors and cooking techniques from traditional Japanese and Peruvian cultures. It is nothing short of mesmerizing. Praise for the food, atmosphere and the distinctive dining experience seems to be never-ending. So who are the masterminds behind these phenomenal new dishes served just a stone’s throw away? Should we be surprised that Texas natives are at the helm? Chef Nick Harrison, Nikkei’s

corporate chef, has traveled the globe studying the culinary arts at some of the world’s most notable institutions, including Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. He is classically trained in cuisine and pastry creations and even served as a chef consultant in Chile and Lima, Peru. The multifaceted chef has now returned to his Texas roots right here in Dallas. Executive Chef Ross Demers is the other half of the dynamic duo in the kitchen at Nikkei. Chef Demers grew up spending time in his grandparents’ garden in New Hampshire, where he says his fascination for food began. He, like Chef Harrison, also grew up in Texas, but traveled west to California to study at the California School of Culinary Arts in Los Angeles. He became well-known

in the culinary circles of Los Angeles and then Vail, Colorado, before returning to Texas. At Nikkei, Chef Demers relishes the development and execution of the “sometimes experimental” dishes that he and Chef Harrison create on a daily basis. Together, these two incredibly diverse chefs are able to flawlessly create Japanese-Peruvian cuisine at Nikkei, preparing dishes with honor and respect in the footsteps of the cultural elders of these two regions. Chef Demers passionately describes his style as “in the moment, heartful and soulful.” When asked about their favorite dish to serve at Nikkei, neither chef hesitated. Their favorite menu item is the Rare Seared Scallop in Spiced Cashew Butter. “The dish really represents the balance and contrast of both worlds,” Chef Harrison says. “You have the raw sweetness of the scallop against the crisp saltiness of the seared side. You also have the earthy fermented flavor of shoyu against the creamy sweetness of the cashew butter. The Jaguar Paw cocktail pairs well with its sweet and savory fruitiness.” If Japanese-Peruvian cuisine is new to you, the chefs recommend starting with the salmon at Nikkei. “Black Garlic Salmon is a nice and easy introduction,” says Chef Demers. “Salmon is approachable and this dish has some amazing Japanese-Peruvian layers on it.” Nikkei’s dedicated sushi bar is equally as exciting as the menu, featuring an abundant array of specialty and prominent classic rolls and sashimi offerings. “One of the most popular items among Nikkei’s discerning clientele is the Doble Cangrejo Roll with crisp lump crab, shiso panca, garlic, chili, creamy snow crab and a soy wrapper,” notes Chef Demers. Chef Harrison created the entire menu at Nikkei, but he humbly passes the kudos on to his culinary colleague. “A menu is just words on a page,” says Chef Harrison. “The true culinary skill comes from Chef Demers. He has really brought those words on the menu to life with amazing execution.” Saving the best for last, we inquired about the most popular dessert after a Japanese-Peruvian feast. “We probably sell Matcha Hot Plate most,” says Chef Demers. “It’s a molten chocolate cake with a gooey center served on a hot cast iron plate and drizzled tableside with Matcha extract. It’s bubbly, gooey and delicious.” As for the atmosphere at Nikkei, consider it the ultimate spot for a sophisticated date night. Between the rooftop patio with stunning city views and a soundtrack of mod tunes inside, the entire space feels urban and upscale. Visit for dinner and drinks on the weekend, and the entire venue transforms from restaurant to late-night destination. If you’re in the mood to be daring on your next night out, let Nikkei wow your senses.

Steel City Pops has the remedy to the blazing-hot days of summer: ice-cold pops. The purveyor of craft popsicles opened in Park Village just in time to beat the heat, offering artisanal twists on the summertime favorite. Only the treats at Steel City Pops are far more sophisticated than any of your childhood favorites. These delights are made with enticing ingredients, local finds and unique pairings. All of the shop’s summer-scorcher solutions are made in small batches without the artificial flavors, colors and preservatives of mass-produced pops. Instead, Steel City Pops uses the freshest all-natural or certified organic ingredients. Sweetened with organic sugar, all the offerings are gluten-free and vegetarian. If you’re committed to eating clean, here’s a way to indulge and feel good about it. Whether you’re in need of a post-pool-day pick-meup or you want to satisfy a sweet tooth, Steel City Pops has you covered. The menu is divided into fruity and creamy categories in flavors that will please the whole family. Kids will clamor for the always-classic Strawberry Pop, made only with strawberries, lemon, organic cane sugar and water. The Elderflower Pop, with its floral, citrus and honey flavors, will satisfy a more sophisticated palate. It’s similar to a berry pop, only ratcheted up a notch. On the creamy side of the menu, the Avocado Pop is smooth and rich with a hint of citrus from lime juice. It also happens to be the only creamy option without dairy. The Coffee Pop, one of the shop’s most popular items, is another one to try. Made with espresso and Turkish ground coffee, this pop packs a punch of caffeine in frozen form. It’s silky smooth and sweet—the perfect cool-down that will also perk you right up. The menu also features eclectic pops such as the Pineapple Jalapeño, which is both sweet and spicy. Like the other pops, it’s made with just a handful of all-natural ingredients. You never know just how fiery it’ll be—the heat level varies in each batch depending on how many jalapeños are used. From traditional flavors to exotic combinations, Steel City Pops provides many cold options for hot days. And with new seasonal flavors added to the menu, there will always be a pop to pique your interest. Stop by and ring in summer with one of the freshest, coolest treats in town.

not YOUR ORDINARY Margarita

Mi Dia From Scratch puts a scientific spin on the frosty fave Break out the tequila—it’s time for a toast. With Cinco de Mayo this month and summer right around the corner, May is made for margaritas. While most are served frozen or on the rocks, Mi Dia From Scratch mixes things up with its Cloud 9, which is served straight-up in a martini glass. Bartenders use molecular gastronomy to top off this beverage with hibiscus air, giving it different textures and a delightfully foamy finish. Whether you get scientific at home (you can purchase molecular gastronomy kits online), or you simply shake it and serve it, we think you’ll agree: There’s no margarita quite like this.

CLOUD 9 | MI DIA FROM SCRATCH INGREDIENTS:

VOLUME:

Código 1530 Blanco Rose tequila

1.5 oz.

Cointreau Noir

.5 oz.

Lemon juice

.75 oz.

Lime juice

.25 oz.

Smoked vanilla agave

.5 oz.

INSTRUCTIONS: Squeeze fresh lemon and lime juice. Set aside. Combine tequila and Cointreau Noir over ice in a shaker. Shake vigorously. Add juices and agave, and shake again. Strain into a martini glass and enjoy. If you choose, use a molecular gastronomy kit to create foam for the top.

NICE TOUCH: Add a lemon wheel on the rim for a decorative flourish.

Meet Me in Bermuda KICK OFF SUMMER WITH SAND, SAILING AND SEAFOOD

W

ith the summer travel season officially upon us, it’s time to jet away to a new locale. If you happen to love the water, the sapphire sea that surrounds the islands of Bermuda beckon. Composed of 181 small islands, Bermuda is only 22 miles long and one mile wide. It doesn’t take long to explore the island, but for a perfectly planned trip, you’ll want to stay in close proximity to your ideal activities and excursions.

Southampton Parish The not-to-be-missed 35th America’s Cup takes place in Bermuda May 26 through June 27, and many of the luxury hotels offer special packages that include accommodations and tickets to watch the worldwide sailing event—including the Fairmont Southampton. The Southampton Parish makes up the majority of Bermuda’s West End, and

78 • MAY 17

this is where you’ll find the Fairmont luxury beach resort. In close proximity to the start and finish lines of America’s Cup, the Fairmont Southampton is 100 acres of pinksand beaches, coconut palm trees and this-is-what-I’ve-beendreaming-of spots to relax and take in the ocean breezes. Featuring nearly 600 accommodations, including 11 signature suites, 23 one- and two-bedroom suites, and two penthouse suites, the Four Diamond Award-winning resort offers plenty of choices. The resort even throws in a private balcony and marble bathroom in every room. Within the grounds of the Fairmont Southampton is the Turtle Hill Golf Club, highlighted by an 18-hole, par-54, 2,864-yard course. With plenty of bunkers and water hazards—not to mention coastal winds—it can be a challenging course. However, that’s what makes golf a sport, right? Another point of interest at Turtle Hill is FootGolf, and it is played just as it sounds. The point is to kick your way throughout the course using a soccer ball and wider holes. NPS.gov/glba

Points of Interest The 35th America’s Cup will begin and end in Bermuda’s Great Sound, a cove of sorts created by the natural hook shape on the West End. The America’s Cup contest was first held in 1851 and is the oldest trophy in international sport—even older than the modern Olympics! This is the first time Bermuda will be hosting the event, which features initial qualifying races, followed by challenger finals and then super regattas. The events will take place over the course of a month, coming to a close June 27. Located in Bermuda’s famous Royal Naval Dockyard, the official America’s Cup Village will feature all the team bases, a pit row, food and beverage, entertainment and concerts. When your eyes aren’t glued to the races in front of you, the Royal Naval Dockyard is the most visited tourism site in Bermuda. As fitting of a 150-year-old British Navy homestead, the Royal Naval Dockyard is first and foremost the home of the National Museum of Bermuda and is filled with artifacts and artwork that document the island’s maritime history. Also on premises are shops and craft markets, a place to watch and swim with dolphins, and Snorkel Park, where watersports for the whole family abound. Also a popular hub for tourists, but not as crowded, the Gibbs Hill Lighthouse offers some of the most spectacular views of Bermuda. The 185-step, cast iron beacon has been guiding ships safely to, from and around Bermuda since 1846. While there, enjoy a meal at the Dining Room, a restaurant boasting outdoor casual dining in an intimate setting—in other words, it’s romantic. GoToBermuda.com, BermudaLighthouse.com

What’s on the Menu? Many restaurants offering fine dining in Bermuda are on the premises of resorts and hotels. For instance, Ascots is located at the Royal Palms Hotel, a small boutique hotel located a few miles outside the city of Hamilton in the Central region of Bermuda. For more than 20 years, owners Edmund Smith (also the executive chef) and Angelo Armano have been providing guests with dishes inspired by European flavors known as Progressive Continental Mediterranean. Barbury Duck (oven-roasted breast and panko-crusted confit duck thigh, rested on a slow braised sherry vinegar red cabbage with roasted pancetta) is just one of the many favorites on the dinner menu. The restaurant also boasts an extensive wine selection. Ascots.bm For more authentic Bermuda seafood, head to The Lobster Pot Restaurant and Boathouse Bar. With a 40-year history of providing guests with seafood specialties, fresh fish and flown-in Maine lobster, the restaurant offers an eclectic mix of flavors. Try the fish of the day served Neptune style, pan-fried and topped with sautéed onions and bananas. But save room for dessert! Eleven menu items are devoted entirely to your sweet tooth. Sonia lost 30 pounds!† About three years ago, I began to slowly gain weight. I was maintaining the same eating habits, but I continued to gain weight, most of which was in my midsection. I was so unhappy with how I looked and I had no energy. I had tried various diets in the past without results. I was at the end of my rope. My daughter-in-law’s mother told me about her friend’s success with Medi-Weightloss®. I did some research and decided to give the program a try. I was impressed with the personalization of the diet based on age, weight, and lab results. From the beginning, I began to feel better, have more energy, and see results. I lost over 30 pounds† in 3 months. I went from a size 8 to a size 2. I recommended the program to my friend and she has lost 25 pounds†. I believe in Medi-Weightloss®.

HOME STYLE TWEAKS | TIPS | TRENDS

T

Get Cooking

imeless all-white kitchens can seem stark or sterile, but with just the right touches, white can be clean and dazzling and provide the perfect backdrop for pops of color. Shades of white cabinets, hood vents and tile choices definitely make a clean statement again this year, according to local professionals. Real estate pros we talked to agree. But resist the urge to distress the surfaces or add glazes for a well-worn look and instead opt for clean and sleek. Designers are now saying no to faux. Another returning favorite is this year’s top choice for countertops. You guessed it: granite. Let your other design elements— such as furniture, drawer pulls, appliances and lighting—inspire the color of granite for your kitchen. For example, if your accent color is black, installing black granite creates a completely cohesive look. While natural stone counters can be pricey, they add overall value to your home and have proven to be a timeless classic. Exposed brick is an on-trend design element for the most-used room in the house, but what if you love the look but are missing one thing … the bricks? There’s an ingenious solution. Applied much like wallpaper, brick veneers can transform your wall or backsplash and be cut to fit any architectural shape you want to cover—even corners. Old Mill Brick manufactures natural clay brick veneers

that come in a multitude of traditional brick colors. Each web sheet includes 12 attached bricks that are applied to a prepared surface. Once bricks have set, mortar is added to fill in the gaps. After installed, the brick surface can easily be painted to match your décor or left natural. If you’re up for a DIY project, your home improvement store pros can provide you with instructions on how to mount the panels securely over any interior surface. But you’ll need sophisticated tools such as a wet saw for cutting the bricks, so hiring a pro might be a good call. For years, the go-to appliances for high-end gourmet-style kitchens have been stainless steel, but black surfaces have recently made a comeback—especially when paired with dark cabinets. Why are black appliances enjoying a welcome return? One is price. Stainless steel remains the most expensive finish option while classic black is more affordable. Another reason is how much easier it is to keep black surfaces clean. If you have stainless, you know it shows every single fingerprint and just breathing on it will leave a smudge. Or explore black stainless steel—a hybrid now offered by appliance manufacturers such as LG and Samsung—that’s billed as smudge- and fingerprint-resistant. Now, who saw that coming? The kitchen truly is the heart of every home. This year, create a space that is both bright and welcoming with the latest in kitchen trends from your knowledgeable neighborhood design professionals.
