The Century Mark One hundred. It’s the number of U.S. senators, the temperature at which water boils and the basis of our monetary system. It can bring a smile, like when your child aces a test or races across 100 yards to score a touchdown. It can even put a bounce in your step; according to Billboard’s Top 100, it’s the song everyone is dancing to (currently, it’s Pharrell Williams’ “Happy”). As this month’s issue reaches your coffee table, I’m happy to say Southlake Style has reached the century mark. One hundred issues ago, we covered the grand opening of the Grand Avenue District of Southlake Town Square. Since that first issue, we’ve come to enjoy a special place in the community and in your homes as the most-read local publication. Together, we’ve seen this area transform from sleepy suburb to a vibrant destination full of opportunities. Thumbing through our pile of past issues was a humbling experience to say the least. We’ve come a long way since March of 2006 — nine annual Best Mom essay contests to be exact — and we couldn’t have done it without the support of our business and community partners, our readers and the hundreds of kids who penned, typed or crayoned those essays through the years. As I look around, I’m also invigorated because it’s plain to see there are many great things still to come — new parks, new restaurants, new hotels and ever more places to come together and celebrate our community with style. Celebrating community: That was the plan in our first 100 issues and will be our plan for the next 100 to come. Yours in Southlake Style,

CARROLL SOCCER TEAMS HEADED TO PLAYOFFS The Carroll Dragon boys soccer and the Carroll Lady Dragons will begin their trek to playoffs. The Dragons are focusing on the Class 5A bi-district playoffs. Dragon senior Walker Beasley scored the winning goal against Haltom, which put the Dragons in position to continue to district play. Carroll finished as the No. 3 seed in 4-5A, going 6-3-5. The Lady Dragons finished the regular season with a 4-0 victory against Haltom, earning the District 4-5A championship. Carroll finished 13-1 overall and are 19-1-1 on the season. FORMER DRAGON QUARTERBACK RETIRES FROM NFL Former Carroll Dragon star quarterback Greg McElroy is retiring from the National Football League. McElroy played for the New York Jets and Cincinnati Bengals. Upon his retirement, McElroy plans to work as an SEC Network analyst. The network will launch in August. Before his NFL career, McElroy played at Alabama and was the starting quarterback on the Crimson Tide’s BCS Championship team in 2009. outstanding
commitment to music education with a Best Communities for Music Education designation for the second consecutive year. The National Association of Music Merchants Foundation awards the recognition. GCISD joins a handful of districts in North Texas and 376 districts across the nation to receive the prestigious distinction in 2014. To receive a Best Communities for Music Education designation, districts must demonstrate efforts towards maintaining music education as part of the schools’ core curriculum.

RELAY FOR LIFE SOUTHLAKE CELEBRATES ITS FIFTH YEAR Relay for Life Southlake returns to Carroll High School for its fifth year. The annual all-night event is expecting more than 2,000 participants from Southlake and neighboring communities. Relay For Life Southlake takes place on the football field and back parking lot of Carroll High School. The relay committee organizes the event to include a midway area of games, activities and food while the relay is underway. An entertainment stage is set up on the field to entertain teams walking the track. Organizers say they will move campsites to the football field rather than outside the track this year in an effort to capture the full energy of the event. Additionally, team fundraising activities will take place at campsites to allow teams to continue to raise funds with fun activities that others can share.

TWO NEW EATERIES DEBUT IN COLLEYVILLE Colleyville owners Johnny Ragland and Executive Chef Todd Phillips are merging both of their restaurants for a fresh, new take with JR’s Steak & Grill. Both owners announced plans to combine JR’s Steakhouse and JR’s Grill at 5400 S.H. 121. The new eatery opened its doors for patrons this spring. Meanwhile, the present location of JR’s Grill, which has set up shop at 5220 S.H. 121, will become Gator’s Grill & Cafe. Johnny Ragland has more than 40 years of experience in the local restaurant and bar industry. He gained a reputation for knowing what it takes to provide professional service, great atmosphere and an unparalleled dining experience.
DURHAM INTERMEDIATE SPELLING BEE CHAMP ADVANCES TO STATE Durham Intermediate sixth grader Bradley Lund is once again the school’s National Geographic Bee Champion. He is qualified to participate at the state level of the National Geographic Bee. One winner for each state and territory will advance to the national competition, which will be held this month in Washington, D.C.

CARROLL VARSITY GIRLS WATER POLO TEAM TAKES HOME FIRST PLACE The Southlake Carroll girls varsity water polo team recently won first place at the Southlake Dragon Invite Tournament Championship. Eight of the top boys and girls from North Texas competed in the annual event at the Carroll Independent School District Aquatic Center. The Southlake Dragon Invite is one of the premier events in the area for the top teams to play, compete, learn and have fun. The Lady Dragons placed first, while the Dragons placed third. The Carroll teams are working towards representing the area at the Texas High School State Championship this month, which they have done in the past. CARROLL HIRES CHAMPION VOLLEYBALL COACH Southlake Carroll hired a five-time champion volleyball coach to lead the Lady Dragons. Ryan Mitchell will take over after building Lovejoy High School into a state powerhouse, making him one of the state’s premier volleyball coaches. Lovejoy High School won five consecutive state championships in Class 3A and 4A over seven seasons under Mitchell’s leadership. Mitchell went 315-41 at Lovejoy and led the program to its first state title in 2008, igniting a run of dominance in 3A. Mitchell earned numerous state and national accolades throughout Lovejoy High School’s four consecutive 3A titles.

KELLER GIRLS SOCCER TEAMS ADVANCE TO PLAYOFFS Three of Keller ISD’s varsity girls soccer teams qualified for the University Interscholastic League playoffs. All three have advanced to the area round after wins in bi-district. Keller High’s team entered the postseason as District 4-5A’s second seed and posted a dominant 6-0 victory over Weatherford in the bi-district round. Although Central’s girls finished fourth in 4-5A, they advanced to the area round thanks to a 3-1 victory over 3-5A champion Arlington Martin. CARROLL DRAGON SISTERS COMPETE AT TAEKWONDO CHAMPIONSHIP Carroll students Jessica Neal and Cassandra Neal competed at the Texas State USAT Taekwondo Championship. Jessica, a Carroll Elementary fourth grader, won her third consecutive gold medal for the NTA Colleyville Taekwondo Competitive team under the direction of Master Jonathan Hardwick. Her sister Cassandra, a Dawson Middle School eighth grader, took third place in the World Class Sparring Division in the Texas State USAT Taekwondo Championship. With this finish, Cassandra qualifies for the World Class National Olympic team at the National Taekwondo tournament in San Jose in July.

COLLEYVILLE HERITAGE PRODUCTION NOMINATED FOR REGIONAL AWARDS The Colleyville Heritage production of “Seussical” received five nominations from the Dallas Summer High School Musical Theater Awards, including Best Musical. The other nominations include Best Actor Wes Davis; Best Supporting Actress Andrea Pajarillo; Best Director; and Best Lighting Design. Winners of the Best Actor and Best Actress awards win an all expense paid trip to New York City to compete in the National High School Musical Theater Awards on June 30.
TEXPRESS LANES OPEN TO MANAGE TRAFFIC CONGESTION The Texas Department of Transportation opened the TEXpress Lanes on the DFW Connecter as a tool for managing congestion. The lanes are on a four-mile segment of S.H. 114 from just west of S.H. 26 to east of International Parkway — near the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. The TEXpress Lanes will run parallel to fully reconstructed main lanes as well as frontage roads, offering drivers the option to pay a variable toll. However, the connector will open at zero cost for a temporary introductory period, which will allow the traveling public to try the lines, while providing TxDOT an opportunity to continue testing tolling equipment. Later, the incentive period will change and tolls will be charged. The single-occupancy passenger vehicle rate will range from $0.67 to $1 for the entire segment when using a TollTag from the North Texas Tollway Authority.

EMERALD BELLES SWEEP NATIONALS The Emerald Belles were named national champions at the MA National Drill Team Competition. The team won first place overall in their division, which earned them their title along with national championship jackets. The Belles also took first place in High Kick and Lyrical and second place in Jazz. The Belles officers won the highest awards at the competition, receiving first place in all three of their dances and first place overall. The officers were also awarded national champions and will receive rings. In the solo category, four of the Belles placed in the finals. In the 11/12 division, Lacey Munoz won second place, and Anna Grace Pruitt took fifth place. In the 9/10 division, Jessica Bowman was awarded eighth place and Claire Berutti ninth place. In the duet category, Peyton Faltys and Claire Berutti took third place.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT STUDIO MOVIE GRILL MAKES ITS BIG-SCREEN DEBUT IN COLLEYVILLE Studio Movie Grill recently announced a major expansion initiative with new location openings across the nation, including Colleyville. Since 2000, Studio Movie Grill CEO Brian Schultz has swiftly grown his company to 16 locations and 158 screens in seven states. The company prides itself on modernizing the traditional movie-going experience by combining first-run movies with in-theater dining. The 51,935 square-foot establishment will be an upscale social destination, encompassing eight screens and more than 1,000 seats. Studio Movie Grill Colleyville will offer causal dining and lounge areas for socializing before or after the main feature and dinner.

MMOW TEES OFF FOR 23RD ANNUAL GOLF CLASSIC For more than two decades, Metroport Meals on Wheels has provided a luxury golf event that connects business leaders and supporters across Northeast Tarrant County to assist community members in need. The 23rd Annual Golf Classic will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on June 9 at Trophy Club Country Club located at 500 Trophy Club Dr. The event will feature an exciting new mobile pro shop, contests, raffles, prizes, awards and incredible food.

VELOCIS PURCHASES TOWN CENTER COLLEYVILLE Dallas-based real estate investment fund Velocis bought a Colleyville shopping center, which is anchored by popular retail tenants. Velocis recently acquired Town Center Colleyville, which features a 138,000 square-foot shopping center on Colleyville Boulevard. The decade-old property has various tenants, including a Market Street grocery store as well as a Studio Movie Grill theater.
The new property owner plans to make upgrades to the
retail center, including the addition of new tenants. Currently, 93 percent of the shopping center is leased. Velocis was hired by Venture Commercial to lease and manage Town Center Colleyville. Additionally, Clay Smith and Lance Taylor with JLL brokered the sale. This will mark the company’s 15th acquisition since it started in 2010. The fund now has more than $303 million in real estate assets. Velocis owns office buildings, shopping centers and medical properties.

SOUTHLAKE CITY COUNCIL EXPRESSES SUPPORT FOR PROPOSED WESTIN HOTEL The City of Southlake is in talks to potentially acquire a new Westin hotel during the first reading of a site plan during a recent meeting. Paul Barham of Harrell Hospitality Group presented the proposed site plan and zoning change. The hotel would be located at 1200 E. S.H. 114, a space that is currently owned by Gateway Church. In 2007, the city council approved the current zoning on the property for the development of the Gateway Church campus, allowing for hotel district uses. The proposed hotel is a four-star, four-diamond facility, featuring 276 guest rooms and amenities, including a full-service restaurant, meeting and conference center and a rooftop pool. The hotel would be seven stories, span 6.8 acres and include a three-level parking garage. The council unanimously approved the second meeting, giving permission for design and construction to happen immediately.

SCOUTING THE GREAT NEIGHBORHOODS

lthough Mother’s Day is traditionally celebrated the second Sunday of May, you could say for Julia Ermish, it’s a celebration of sorts 365 days of the year. The Southlake resident and mother of six has been involved in Scouting for the last 15 years. That’s easy to

understand when you consider five of her children are currently in the Scouting world, and Julia will log another eight years before her youngest twins are finished with the program. Presently, Julia is the Committee Chair for Cub Scout Pack 982 and is the Assistant Leader for Girl Scout Troop 4033. She’s also in charge of troop merchandising for Boy Scout Troop 928, and she coordinates the cookie and popcorn sales. “It’s not uncommon to see my dining room packed with boxes of cookies and canisters of popcorn,” she says. “I don’t consider my 15 hours a week dedicated to Scouting a burden at all. I think Scouting is great for every young person who joins. It provides confidence and life skills to help in the future.”

Julia is busy elsewhere, too. She helps her husband, Peter, at his electronics manufacturing company based in Southlake. Once, sometimes twice a month she jets to New York where she serves on the board of the Queen’s Botanical Garden. “It’s nice because we have a place in the city, so I just pack a small bag and go.” Although Julia never joined Scouts as a youngster, she did become involved after her second oldest child started the program. She says she had to learn how to camp, and the first time in the wilderness was a disaster. She says Scouting has taught her a lot over the years. “I can take down a tent and successfully get it back into the bag! When I did that, I knew I had mastered camping,” she says with a laugh. Happy Mother’s Day to Julia and all the other mothers who are reading this!
Southlake Style magazine made its debut in the early months of 2006, created in an effort to offer Southlake residents an opportunity to share their enthusiasm for the city. In the past eight years, the publication has made it a priority to deliver content that both serves and inspires, from Carroll ISD news and city updates to profiles on local personalities and fun articles about food, fashion and fancy cars. To highlight the always-impressive achievements of Southlake Carroll athletes, the first Dragon Pride was published in 2006 and has since acted as a means to chronicle years of sports success with two issues annually. On the following pages,

their favorite moments and take a look back at a few highlights that still resonate after 100 issues.

MOST IMPACTFUL COVER STORIES Southlake Style has touched on many topics throughout the years. Take a look back at a few cover stories that really left an impression. Cover Story: January 2008 In the earlier years, contributors wrote much of Southlake Style’s editorial content, and this month’s cover feature introduced them and their writing to readers. Mike Mills penned a financial solutions column, Brad McCullom provided golf tips, Cruise Holidays of Southlake wrote about travel, and Karry Millette discussed the importance of fitness. Additionally, the one-and-only Roxann Taylor had her own real estate column, Dr. Eric Benzick wrote about family health, Jami and Bob Zimmerman chatted about interior design, and Dr. David Faltys broke news on all things Carroll ISD.
Cover Story: October 2008 In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, this issue of Southlake Style incorporated a Think Pink! theme and donated 10 percent of its proceeds to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure of Tarrant County. Article topics included breast cancer survivor stories and breast cancer facts straight from physicians, among others. Former Dragon volleyball player Amy Moan also shed light on Pink Out games — Southlake Carroll athletic events that raise money through ticket sales for breast cancer research. Amy’s volleyball event was the first, and they continue to be successful for many other sports.
Cover Story: August 2009 As the 2009-2010 school year kicked off, this cover feature explored the advances in classroom technology. “Gone are the overhead projectors and pull-down screens of the past,” the article reads. “They have been replaced by document cameras and interactive white boards.” In 2013, CISD introduced its latest technological achievement — Mobile Dragon, a free smartphone app that allows parents and students to view campus maps, athletics schedules, a school calendar and more.
Cover Story: May 2011 In March of 2011, a 9.0-magnitude earthquake — the fifth largest in the world since 1900 — hit the northeast coast of Japan and triggered a devastating tsunami. Although Southlake’s sister city, Tome, is located 70 miles from the quake’s epicenter, it was still affected. At the time of this issue’s publication, one person was reported dead, 12 were missing and 42 were injured. Additionally, more than 1,000 buildings — mostly homes — suffered extensive damages. Then Southlake city councilman, Jeff Wang, was instrumental in promoting efforts like Southlake4Japan that raised money for disaster relief.
Cover Story: March 2013 This issue’s cover feature, “Kids in Crisis,” discussed the teen tragedies that plagued the city of Southlake between 2010 and March 2013. In that time period, 47 suicide attempts were reported, eight of which resulted in death. Teenagers between 15 and 19 years old made 14 of the attempts, and three of those resulted in death. Laura Hill, founder of Southlake Parents Against Risks to our Kids (SPARK), said at the time, “Kids are desperately looking for ways to express sadness and deal with stress.”

Community Impact Award Winners Brian Stebbins (2009) The inaugural award was presented to Brian Stebbins for his extraordinary vision for Southlake Town Square, which has dramatically enhanced the landscape of the city. Stebbins, who passed away in October of 2012, will always be remembered as the father, friend and leader who put his heart and soul into transforming the town square into the wonderful dining, retail and residential community it is today.
Memorable Milestones
Brad Bradley (2010) As the founder of nearly 30 nonprofits that have improved the quality of life in and around Southlake, Brad Bradley was selected for the 2010 award. One the most recognizable children’s charities is Summer Santa, which Bradley cofounded with Dave Lieber, now a columnist for The Dallas Morning News. Bradley, also a judge, established the first law office in Southlake after settling in the area in 1983.
2006: Awarded Southlake’s Small Business of the Year 2006: First Dragon Pride issue September/October 2006: Celebrating 50 years of the city of Southlake
Southlake Women’s Club (2011) The faces behind Southlake’s annual Art in the Square festival were honored for making the event a time-honored tradition. Established in 1999, Art in the Square draws approximately 150 artists and thousands of art lovers to Southlake each year. Proceeds from the three-day weekend are donated to area charities.

Jack D. Johnson (2012) Known as the founder of Dragon Nation, Jack D. Johnson was awarded in 2012 for his role as the first superintendent of Carroll ISD — a position he held for 28 years. Sadly, Johnson passed away in early January 2013, but his legacy will forever live on in the hearts of Dragons everywhere.

The “An American Girl: Saige Paints the Sky” star graced the July 2013 cover of Southlake Style. An exclusive event in partnership with Forest Park Medical Center and Harkins Theatres Southlake 14 was held in early July — it allowed ticket holders to view the movie before it was released. Sidney, who turns 14 next month and will enter her first year of high school in August, recently wrapped filming on “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.” The film, which also stars Jennifer Garner and Steve Carell, is expected to be released in theaters in October.

The football star has been a cover star twice, once for Southlake Style’s February 2014 issue and previously for Dragon Pride’s Fall 2009 issue. The strong-legged kicker, who won two national championships while at the University of Alabama, will receive his master’s degree in August and intends to declare for the 2014 NFL draft. “I will be going out for the draft, but my focus is on pursuing a JD or MBA degree from Alabama,” Foster said last month.

Cover Story: April 2012 Southlake resident Jon Daniels, general manager for the Texas Rangers, graced this month’s cover. He became the GM in 2005 at just 28 years old (the youngest in MLB history) and completely restructured the Rangers’ approach to scouting. “We had to reassess how we did everything. There was no foundation to what we did, no scouting structure,” he said. “I challenged all scouts to come up with a ‘gut-feel’ guy. Find your guy, and do the extra homework on him.” Now 36, Daniels made news last year when he traded Ian Kinsler to the Detroit Tigers for Prince Fielder.

Magazine Contests Engaging readers is always one of the magazine’s top priorities. Over the years, Southlake Style has had the pleasure of reaching out to residents of Southlake and the surrounding areas for participation in various contests, including cover contests and the annual Best Mom contest. October 2009: Alannah Bruce, winner of the Taste of Autumn cover contest It’s been almost five years since this talent was selected to appear on the cover of Southlake Style. Alannah, who will turn 11 this July, has made a name for herself as an actress in film, television, on stage and in print. Managed by Dallas-based The Horne Agency, Alannah has appeared in campaigns for Michaels, Visionworks, Chuck E. Cheese and Academy Sports & Outdoors. She was recently cast in two feature films: “A Miracle for Haven,” set to release this coming Christmas, and “Dancer and the Dame,” starring Billy Gardell and Eva LaRue. August 2013: Zoe, winner of the Dog Days of Summer cover contest The large but loveable Bernese mountain dog posed with model Erin Robinson on the cover, but in real life, she belongs to Lance and Laura McKoy. Zoe, now 5 years old, was chosen from a sizeable number of adorable entries. Best Mom Essay Contest For nine years and counting, Southlake Style has asked elementary school students what makes their moms the best in Southlake. It’s always hard to select just one essay for publication in each May issue, especially when the kids describe Mom as “super mom,” “angel in disguise” and “my best friend.” To quote 2011 winner Eric Houtman, “A mom isn’t just someone who raises you. She helps you in school, goes to all your sports games and doesn’t get mad when you’re having fun and you beat her in checkers.”

Old Union Elementary fourth grader Kendall Lyman wrote a heartfelt paper titled “Best Mom in Southlake,” about her loving and creative mom whose “warm, kind smile always brightens my day.” Kelly Lyman, unaware that teachers, students and staff were
waiting for her in the school’s library, was immediately overcome with emotion when she realized what was happening. How one Southlake musician’s raw talent will make her a superstar By Linden Wilson Photography by Dustin Vyers

A
bby Anderson’s fingers are dancing so fast across the piano keys that they create an energetic blur. Her long, wavy, chestnut brown hair is cascading over her shoulders, moving to the rhythm of the song as she sways to the beat. “I bet my heart, and the joker won,” she belts out, her soulful voice so powerful that it echoes throughout her living room. The sound is reminiscent of Trisha Yearwood or Lee Ann Womack, known for their ability to power through emotional ballads using their voice as the main instrument. As she finishes the song, Abby pauses, then raises her shoulders, smiles a big, ear-to-ear grin and lets out an animated laugh. Listening to her perform, it is easy to forget that this talented musician is still a 17-year-old girl who has only just begun to leave her mark on the world. The second of seven children, of which the elder six are girls, Abby has had a passion for singing since she was a child growing up in Southlake. “Really, what I liked was the performing part — being in front of people,” she says. At 5, she started taking classical piano lessons, and at 8, she saw one of her favorite singers, Norah Jones, in concert while she was on tour promoting Feels Like Home. Abby also grew up listening to Ray Charles, Leann Rimes, Garth Brooks and Elvis (“I am the weirdest Elvis fanatic, but I just love him. I love jazzy blues”). At 15,

she received the opportunity of a lifetime when she was asked to perform on stage at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium — where names like Elvis and Johnny Cash have played before her. Her performance was part of a benefit concert for the Smiles for Life Foundation, which her father, Steven, co-founded. “It was my very first live performance ever,” recalls Abby, who played the piano and sang “He Stopped Loving Me” by George Jones. “I was put out there, but I was totally okay with it. It was so cool.” While at the Ryman, Abby met Buddy Owens, an award-winning American country music singer based in Nashville. He immediately recognized Abby’s raw talent, humble attitude and passion for music. The two became fast friends and started writing a song that could serve as Abby’s debut to the public. This past January, “He Loves Me” was released on iTunes. The catchy, upbeat track describes a young girl picking daisy petals, wondering if the boy she likes loves her back. “Although the sun is shining/and the summer sky is blue/the pain of a crush I’m hiding/is finally coming through,” Abby croons in one of the song’s verses. “I always joke with him that it took a 35-year-old man to bring out the girly side of me because my single is such a chick flick song,” she laughs, admitting a lot

of her songwriting inspiration doesn’t come from her own love life but from her older sister, Ashlin’s. “She’s in college, and she calls me every now and then talking about boys.” Sometimes, Abby reads through past journal entries or reverts to events from her family’s history when searching for inspiration. Other times, it’s pure make believe. When her career started to take off a little more than a year ago, Abby’s parents pulled her out of Southlake Carroll for homeschooling — but her schedule isn’t any less strict than it was before. “My day starts at 5:30 a.m. with a scripture study class at my church in Colleyville,” she says. “I do that for an hour, then come home and get ready for the day. From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., it’s straight schoolwork, but the beauty of it is that I don’t have any homework. From 2 to 4, it’s classical piano practice. Then I go to the gym, come back for dinner, and from 6 to 8, I do a lot of writing and composing.” Abby’s piano teacher, Mike Springer, is a North Texas-based instructor with more than 25 years of experience who comes to her house to give her lessons. “He’s amazing,” she says. “Words can’t explain the knowledge he has.” She records her music at Denton’s The Panhandle House, a studio owned by producer Erik Herbst. “He’s a great guy who has helped me develop my sound. I couldn’t be luckier to have him.” To date, Abby has recorded seven songs out of more than 25 she has written. “Never Again,” about a young girl abused by her father, is loosely based on someone Abby knows and conveys a poignant message similar to
Garth Brooks’ 1990 hit, “The Thunder Rolls.” At the end of this month, “Daddy He Loves Me” will be released in honor of Fathers Day. The tune, which tells the story of a girl who knows she has found the right man for her because of her father’s example, is based on Abby’s own relationship with her dad. When she’s not writing or recording, Abby loves strumming on her Taylor guitar — a recent Christmas present — and performing anywhere she can, whether it’s a gig at Spoons Café in McKinney, the Majestic Theatre or even a children’s hospital. “At Cook Children’s in Fort Worth, they have a topnotch recording studio for the kids called the Child Life Zone,” Abby says. “They call it the happiest place in the hospital. No nurses and no needles are allowed inside — these kids can just go in there and be kids. I’ve put on little concerts for them. Volunteering is my favorite.” Abby’s modest outlook and solid family values will certainly take her far (“I have a really great family life — we’re all really close and tell one another everything”), but it’s her voice that will make everyone take notice. Last month, Abby was asked to open for either Miranda Lambert or Blake Shelton at a large veterans benefit concert in Wichita Falls, and famed music label Capitol Records has already reached out to the talented teenager. “I’m really lucky that they would even notice me,” she says. “I’m not sure what’s going to happen. Right now, I’m 17, just playing all the gigs I can, writing as much as I can. I want to get a local following going, as big as I can. I just love sharing my music with everyone.”

A quarter of a century later, Lani Stacy is back and bigger than ever By Christina Mlynski Photography by Dustin Vyers
D
ressed in a stark blue chiffon blouse, Lani Stacy strategically crafts her ideal fajita at Esparza’s Restaurante Mexicano in Grapevine. The corn tortilla begins to stack high as the sizzle sound from the piping-hot pan begins to idle. As she builds her perfect taco, she jumps from one topic to the next, smiling with her eyes. The phrase “Grapevine Opry” surfaces as the topic of conversation, and her demeanor changes: This bubbly woman becomes confident, proud. For most, the Grapevine Opry is seen as an iconic tourism staple for the city, but for this entertainer, the Opry far exceeds an amusement spot — it’s a place she’s come to know as home. Stacy began singing at the age of 5, taking vocal lessons to prepare her for singing at church and family events. In 1987, and at just 9 years old, she made her debut on stage at the Grapevine Opry during the inaugural show after the location underwent a major remodeling. “There’s a lot of great singers out there, but for me, my biggest goal is that people feel what I’m singing,” Stacy says. “If it’s a sad song, they’re crying by the time I’m done. If it’s a fast song, they’re dancing in their seats. That’s what drives me. It’s not just singing songs to sing songs, but to try and make people feel the music.” Over the years, Stacy started frequenting the Opry less and less, exploring other entertainment opportunities. When she was 13, she started a band that featured performers all under the age of 21. They
performed at concert venues such as Cowboys Dancehall Arlington, Billy Bob’s and SeaWorld. She also opened up for many country icons, including Reba McEntire, Mark Chestnut, Bryan White, Joe Diffie and Shenandoah. After gaining exposure by opening up for prestigious Nashville stars, she decided it was time to put her talents in the limelight. Stacy went to Nashville and met with numerous record labels. She was offered dozens of deals, but the right offer never came along. For this musical powerhouse, sacrificing her true character to become a symbol for the music industry wasn’t an option. “Music is all about creating a name for yourself and creating your own position in the music world,” Stacy says. “It’s not waiting for someone to find you or waiting for your big moment. It’s about getting yourself out there and creating what you want to look like.”

When Stacy realized Nashville wasn’t worth sacrificing her true self, she came back to Texas and served as an associate worship pastor and eventually became the worship pastor at Metroplex Chapel in Euless. Even though Stacy wasn’t pursuing entertainment as her main career, she never stopped performing. During her time as a worship pastor she still made time for her first love. Over the past five years, this season’s girl started getting a stirring feeling that she wanted to be back on stage — that’s when she placed the phone call to Rocky Gribble, Opry owner. “I just told him, ‘Hey, when you retire, I want to be the first one you tell,’” she explains. “I didn’t know if I’d be in a position where I could take it or if I even wanted it, or what was going to be going on in my life, but I at least wanted him to tell me.” Last summer, she received a call from recently retired Gribble who knew for nearly two years that when he finally decided to hang up his hat, she would take hold of the reigns. When Gribble’s wife was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, an intimate conversation between her and Stacy’s mother turned into a chance of a lifetime. Brena Gribble explained that they had plans to retire given the state of her health and knew that they wanted someone to carry on the tradition and name they made for the Opry. “When I received the call from Rocky, it was perfect timing,” Stacy explains. “I left my full-time gig with the church, so I was sitting in a position to be able to do anything I wanted to do.” She adds, “I’m a season’s girl. I think that when doors open up, that’s the path that I go down, but the performance side of things has always been my niche.” On Jan. 1, 2014, Stacy become the new producer of the Grapevine Opry. While her company Dream Big Productions will continue to carry out a legacy at the Opry, she is redefining a show that is coming into a new age of entertainment. The productions are fresh, fastpaced and provide the most important quality: laughter. The current shows include “Country Music in Texas,” which features songs from legends that were born and raised in Texas like George Strait, Willie Nelson, Miranda Lambert and many more. Additionally, the show “1950’s Mix Up” will feature favorite songs from the ‘50s, along with iconic movie sets such as “Grease,” “Blue Hawaii” and “Teen Beach Movie.” “Now, as Lani has taken over and created the all-new Grapevine Opry Show, the excitement and variety of these shows will reach a brand new audience and honor the Grapevine Opry’s devoted fan base,” says Leigh Lyons, communications manager for the Grapevine Convention & Visitors Bureau. “The show’s high-energy format features a variety of music genres performed by an amazing professional cast.” The lineup of performers will vary throughout the season, but singer Casey Rivers — first runner-up in

season four of “Nashville Star” — and emcee Clint White are a few of the mainstays. As Stacy finally makes her way back to where her entertainment career began, the main priority is to pay the musical experiences forward. Consequently, she mentors aspiring musicians and also offers the Opry as a place for them to exercise their musical talents. For instance, 15-year-old Abby Cohen has been taken under this music veteran’s wing. Cohen performs at festivals and is paving a path on the country scene, which is proving to be a challenge. Dozens of television shows such as “The Voice” and “X Factor” are scooping up raw talent, which provides an easy system for record labels to discover the next big thing. Consequently, Stacy is on a quest to prove to aspiring musicians like Cohen that heading to major cities and compromising your character isn’t the only way to stardom. “I have young girls that think Nashville is the only way to fame, and that’s not the only way,” she says. “You can be a big fish in a little pond or a little fish in a big pond, but you have to create a name for yourself and pursue who you are.” As the stage lights blast on inside the Opry and Stacy takes the stage in her blinged-out cowboy boots with her crew members that are more like family, it’s as if she never left the stage 26 years ago. “These people are friends that I’ve known for many years, so the camaraderie on stage is amazing because it’s not a bunch of strangers getting together to perform a show — we are all friends,” Stacy says with a smirk. “That’s what makes it so different. It’s not just me standing on stage doing my thing; it’s a group effort, and everyone is the best at what they do.”

Chris Elsaesser decided to become a chef when his then-girlfriend (now wife) inspired him to pursue culinary training while he was working as a short-order cook in his family’s diner. Work of Art SPRING GALLERY NIGHT RETURNS TO GRAPEVINE

ast year, the Grapevine Art Dealers Association (GADA) hosted its inaugural Spring Gallery Night along historic Main Street, giving collectors and enthusiasts alike the opportunity to observe high-quality art while enjoying signature food and drink at each participating gallery. This May 3, the successful (and free!) event is back for a second time. From 5 to 10 p.m., meander through six Grapevine galleries, each filled with different yet equally striking media like paintings, bronze sculptures, fine jewelry and hand-blown glass. GADA galleries partaking in the evening include A Touch of Paris, Great American West Gallery, Giddens Fine Art Gallery, The Tower Gallery, Holder Dane Gallery and Art Studios and Vetro Glassblowing Studio & Gallery. From 5 to 8 p.m., Grapevine resident Sonya Terpening will conduct a painting demonstration at the Great American West Gallery, which houses the work of some of the finest Western artists in the world. A Touch of Paris, owned by French artist Dominique Galleron, displays original art including her own oil paintings. Holder Dane, located near the historic train depot, will have wood and clay sculptures, contemporary jewelry and fine pottery on display. Vetro, owned by master glass artist David Gappa, is home to a variety of glass artists’ work, including glass jewelry. “Vetro is so very excited about Spring Gallery Night,” Gappa says. “We take this evening to celebrate the powerful force of pure art and share our collections with everyone.” All gallery owners and artists will be on site for customer convenience and to answer any questions. A New Taste FAMOUS ADDISON FOOD FESTIVAL GETS A MAKEOVER
W
ell-known for its budding restaurant scene, the city of Addison has long been home to the annual Taste Addison culinary festival, which celebrates local chefs and cuisine. But this year, Taste Addison is no more. In its place? Fork & Cork: a rebranded, expanded, bigger and better bash that’s more interactive — and more expensive. The weekend of May 16, Addison Circle Park will be buzzing with activity, from cooking demonstrations to concerts. Friday night tickets cost $65, VIP Saturday tickets are $100, and general admission tickets for Saturday are $35. VIP ticketholders will meet celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson, of “Top Chef Masters” and ABC’s “The Taste” fame, who will also be signing copies of his cookbook. Those with general admission tickets will be treated to a Saturday performance by country superstar Pat Green, who just so happens to be coowner of restaurant The Rustic, located in Uptown. Also on Saturday are the Tasty Run 5K and Fun Run, which will feature tasting stations with bite-size samples for runners circling the course. Restaurants participating in Fork & Cork include Addison Ice House, Belly & Trumpet, Cantina Laredo, Oak, Pakpao Thai, Z Taverna and several others. For this month’s installment, we head to Cowtown for brunch at the newest outpost in the Consilient Hospitality empire, headed up by Tristan Simon. If you have dined at Fireside Pies, The Porch, Hibiscus, Victor Tangos, CBD Provisions or The Front Room, then you are familiar with Simon’s restaurants. AF+B (American Food & Beverage) is similar in look, feel and menu to its sister restaurant, CBD Provisions, located in Dallas’ Joule Hotel. Having dined at both establishments, it’s clear that AF+B shines much brighter in the execution of its menu. The main reason for this is the restaurant’s executive chef, Jeff Harris, of Craft (now closed) and Bolsa fame. Harris is a protégé of Tom Colicchio (owner of the Craft restaurant chain and co-host of “Top Chef”) and has proven to be a star chef in just about any kitchen he works in. You have to pay close attention to actually find the restaurant, which is located in Fort Worth’s West 7th mixed-use development. The exterior is comprised of a wall of windows, dark steel and a lone sign made up of a slender four-
sided pole with the letters AF+B screened onto the sides. The interior is more inviting but still leans towards minimalism, although there is liberal use of wood in the ceiling, on the floors in the main dining area and tabletops throughout, made of reclaimed walnut to warm up the interior. The bar is topped with a cast zinc surface backed by massive wood shelving for liquor and beer taps. Chef Harris sources much of the menu’s ingredients from local farmers and producers, and the menu notes that because of this, a certain dish might not be available due to the small quantities that these local sources produce. The menu is simple and easy to understand with sections for snacks/small plates, larges plates and sides for lunch, dinner or brunch. Everything, even the condiments, is house-made. Our foursome dived right into the menu with a plan to order many things so we could share and try as much as possible. We ordered the housemade pastries that for this particular morning were jalapeño bread and banana walnut muffins served with whipped butter and seasonal apricot

jam. We added a cup of the grass-fed beef chili topped with cornbread crumble, sour cream and pickled jalapeños. The chili had just the right amount of kick and, much to my delight, no beans. We moved on to the large plates with the arrival of the twice ground, grass-fed beef burger cooked perfectly and served with a side of hand-cut fries. It wasn’t the most spectacular burger any of us had sampled, but it was a solid choice. The grouper sandwich had the largest chunk of fried fish we had ever seen; it was definitely fork and knife territory. Again, it was cooked perfectly with no oily sogginess and topped with a pickled slaw and slightly spicy remoulade sauce. Our next two large plates were recommendations from our server. The duck pot pie was a high-end take on the usual chicken version with flaky crust outside and generous hunks of duck and vegetables inside. The turkey pastrami sandwich was good but didn’t live up to the “best sandwich on the menu” promise of our server. Finally, we had a side of AF+B’s version of mac & cheese but made with their house-made rigatoni, cheddar and bacon. The service was excellent, and the relaxed atmosphere added to our enjoyable brunch experience. You won’t be disappointed in this new star of the Cowtown dining scene. AF+B’s custom bar.

Fish City Grill It’s crawfish season at this renovated seafood eatery Dave and Mary Garner are perhaps best known as the owners of Wildwood Grill, a Southlake staple since 2009. In December 2013, the restaurateurs also acquired Fish City Grill, a seafood lover’s haven. Since taking over the Southlake location, Dave has hired new staff and completed a $50,000 renovation. After giving it a fresh coat of paint, reupholstering chairs and booths and adding other personal touches like artwork and a chalkboard detailing daily specials, Dave says the restaurant now has the atmosphere it was missing before. “We wanted it to feel like a cozy neighborhood restaurant as opposed to a Pappadeaux you might find near a busy highway.” Fish City Grill’s menu, which also got a makeover, reflects its unique ambiance. Dishes like the oyster nachos (fried oysters with chipotle tartar sauce and fresh pico de gallo) and crispy calamari (topped with Parmesan and kosher salt and served with olive aioli and Thai chili sauce) offer surprising twists to everyday seafood favorites. Also popular are the weekly chalkboard specials that range from all-you-can-eat Alaskan snow crab to sea scallop with lemon-scented rice and marinated sliced tomatoes. Other Fish City must-trys include fish and chips, honey chipotle shrimp tacos, crawfish etouffee and the crawfish po’ boy. The grill sources its crawfish from Louisiana — the tasty creatures are caught, delivered overnight and always cooked to order. On April 19, Fish City kicked off its all-youcan-eat crawfish Saturdays. “Fish City Grill is a nice complement to what we offer at Wildwood Grill, and Mary and I are committed to bringing the same high level of service and our personal touch to Fish City Grill,” Dave says, noting the restaurant has already catered an event for Southlake Style and is participating in other community activities.

Having hit dealers in the first quarter, the new BMW 435i picks up where its predecessor, the 335i, left off. Redesigned from virtually every angle, BMW’s latest is larger, wider, lower to the road and, thanks to an improved roof design, brings a new level of coupe comfort to the top-down set. Unmistakable family ties bind with the 435i’s striking front end, which hosts the well-known double-kidney grille, four round headlights and a large air intake in the front apron. New elements include the convertible’s muscular wheel arches and wide track, which show off an aggressive stance and prominent horizontal lines.
