for the soul

Each month, Southlake Style nurtures the community by sharing news and profiles about our friends and neighbors at their best. This month, we share the engaging stories of a baker turned television star, an award-winning musician and the products of not one but two beverage industry entrepreneurs. It’s clear this month we’ve taken a shine to the local passions around food, music and beer. Coincidence? I think not! On May 11, we’re also bringing your favorite city magazine to life through the festival of FÜD, TÜNs and BRÜs we’ve affectionately called FÜDTRUKY. Last year’s inaugural festival exceeded expectations, allowing us to give $10,000 to the GRACE Feed Our Kids summer lunch program. This year, we’ve redoubled our efforts to entertain readers and fans through what I would argue will be the city’s largest one-day live music, food and craft beer festival. And that guy on the cover? That’s Devin Leigh — the award-winning musician from North Richland Hills who performs more than 250 shows a year. Read Maleesa Smith’s “Local Lyracist” and you’ll appreciate all that he’s accomplished — including rights as a voting member of the Grammys. He’ll be one of a full lineup of FÜDTRUKY musicians (11:30 a.m. - 9 p.m.) who pair oh so well with fresh air, fresh food and an Irish Red from Shannon Brewery. This issue marks months and months of teamwork behind the scenes as Southlake Style aims to nurture not just with the printed page, but with a live event for all to enjoy. See you there!

Yours in Southlake Style,

We don’t do dishwashers. (Although there are two of them in our big, new kitchen.) We do luxury — and that’s a soapy, sudsy warm bath in that glorious new sink. Ahhhhh. More room. More everything. And you should see the cabinets we live in — custom-made, larger, lounge-ier. They’re our cup of tea. You know, even the plates and glasses look better in the new house, and the food seems tastier, too. Oh — we’ve also been privy to some pretty saucy kitchen conversations. (Two we don’t dare repeat.) Thank you, Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty agent! Life is so cozy here, we can hardly handle it.

Love where you live.

For 13 seasons, this American reality talent show has been enchanting audiences. From singers to comedians and ventriloquists to trapeze artists, the show has truly had it all. Famously judged by Simon Cowell and Howie Mandel, the judging panel will be introducing two new stars this season. Gabrielle Union and Julianne Hough will replace former judges Heidi Klum and Mel B. But we are highlighting this season for one specific reason: It might feature some Southlake talent! In March, the entire Southlake Carroll Emerald Belles auditioned for the show. There is no telling if they will get screen time or not, but we have high hopes.

ask A . . FOOD BLOGGER: ‘PRIMAL MOM’ AUTHOR AMBER BUTCHER SHARES HER HEALTH JOURNEY

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO CUT OUT PROCESSED FOODS? The truth is that I just woke up one morning sick and tired of being sick and tired. I began researching natural ways to combat the postpartum issues I was experiencing, and everything kept pointing to diet.

WAS THE TRANSITION DIFFICULT? Honestly, it was easy. Once we got over the dreaded ‘carb flu’ of transitioning off processed foods, the changes we began to see in ourselves, from moods to weight loss to eliminating health issues, just made it so easy to keep going.

WHY DID YOU START BLOGGING? Friends and family noticed the significant change in my family, especially our physical appearance, and continually asked what we were doing. I would always answer with, ‘We are just eating!’ As I was in the middle of cooking dinner, I decided to start a Facebook page and I named it ‘Primal Mom.’

Amber Butcher DO YOU BLOG FULL TIME? My blog is just real life, so yes! Blogging started out as a hobby but turned into a full-on business, and I am grateful for every reader I have. Plus, I write cookbooks!

WHAT IS AN AVERAGE DAY LIKE FOR YOU? I am a wife and mother first. While cooking, writing and creating recipes consumes a lot of my free time, I prioritize my family sitting around the dinner table every single evening.

WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE STARTING 'PRIMAL MOM'? Prior to staying home with my children, I was a social worker. I worked with abused women and children and spent some time working in the juvenile justice system.

“W

elcome, bakers,” Food Network’s “Spring Baking Championship” host Clinton Kelly declares as the season five contestants take their places. While the other nine bakers and pastry chefs peer around the work kitchen, Southlake mom and home baker, Jessica Colvin, is busy soaking it all in. The baking competition’s 2019 premiere is Jessica’s television debut – an opportunity she never dreamed to be possible. But the 28-year-old Dragon alum jumped when she was given the chance to compete on a national stage. She may have been standing next to established bakery owners and pastry chefs, some of which had experience at Michelin star establishments, but she didn’t let her underdog nature intimidate her. Rather, she was ready to show her kids – and the world – that she was ready to fight.

FINDING BAKING Jessica may be new to cooking shows, but she’s definitely not a newbie in the kitchen. She grew up baking alongside the women in her family. Jessica marveled at her mother, grandmother and great grandmother who poured their creative talents into their food. “It’s just always been a part of my family and my lifestyle,” Jessica says. “That’s where my love for cooking started.” By the age of 12, Jessica knew she wanted to bake professionally. She found a similar passion for art while studying at Carroll ISD schools, and she realized she could channel those skills into her confectionary creations. “Every elective I had in school was art,” Jessica laughs. “I was not involved in anything else, I just loved everything art, so baking was the perfect platform. It combined two of my favorite things: eating food and making art.” Jessica wanted to go to pastry school after graduating from Carroll Senior High School, but her parents encouraged her to pursue a bachelor’s degree first. While she had every intention of attending Arizona State University and then going on to pursue baking, Jessica had her first child, Ellie, at the age of 20. “I was really young,” Jessica says. “So after she was born, I hung onto baking and decided to pursue pastry without a degree. I just wanted to stay with her.” Jessica started creating cakes for friends and family out of her own kitchen after moving home. After each event, more people would put in orders asking if they could buy her work. Before she knew it, Jessica had a flourishing cake business on her hands. “It just sort of happened,” Jessica says. “It bloomed into this business, and it turned into a way to make money.” It didn’t come without hard work. Jessica wanted to expand her offerings, so she started experimenting and teaching herself new techniques, like trendy watercolor cakes. It took some trial and error, but Jessica was quickly able to pick

up industry methods and accomplish them in her clients’ orders. “I have always wanted to try new things and be on top of trends as well as experiment with my own style,” Jessica says. “I would see something that’s inspiring and try to make a cake that was something like that.” Jessica still draws inspiration from the same places: nature and art. But with her new skill set, new doors started opening for the Colvin family. MAKING HER WAY TO THE BIG SCREEN Jessica never thought her business would land her on TV let alone on Food Network’s “Spring Baking Championship.” She didn’t even put her own hat in the ring. Taylor Masters, one of Jessica’s friends, covertly submitted Jessica’s application for the show, which led to a Food Network producer surprising Jessica with a phone call a few weeks later. “I knew she would never send an application in herself, so I took matters into my own hands,” Taylor says. “She’s so talented at so many things and has always created these amazing floral arrangements that have inspired her gorgeous cakes. The show was a perfect fit for her!” The producer asked if Jessica was still interested in participating in the competition, and Jessica eagerly said yes. The next few weeks included several more phone calls and a few Skype sessions to prove that Jessica was a serious baker. She proved her stuff and landed a spot on the nationally televised showcase. Jessica joined nine other bakers to duke it out for the title and $25,000. These bakers included talented cooks and chefs from across the globe, and each contestant had an array of education and industry experience. As the only home baker and the only selftaught competitor, Jessica may have at first seemed like an underdog. But she came ready to put her head down and create the sweets she’s known for. “I want to win for my kids and show them that you can be an underdog, and you can come out on top,” Jessica tells viewers during the season’s premiere. In that first episode, Jessica created spring animal donuts and a watercolor cake that got great reviews from the show’s judging panel: pastry chef Lorraine Pascale, pastry chef and owner of Charm City Cakes Duff Goldman and chef and entrepreneur Nancy Fuller. “These shows are no joke,” Jessica says. “When the time starts, you are really running and trying to just get everything done. No one is there to hand you what you need. You just need to focus on what’s in front of you.” Her desserts earned her a spot in the second week where she reimagined Southern favorites like a rhubarb pie and Belgian waffles on a stick. The judges, however,

found fault with Jessica’s literal interpretation of the challenge, and, spoiler alert, she was sent home by the end of the second episode. While she did not become the Spring Baking Champion, Jessica says the competition was an amazing learning experience. “I was honestly terrified to go on the show,” Jessica says. “And I just realized if you go outside of your comfort zone, something amazing can happen.” PLANNING WHAT’S NEXT Jessica enjoyed watching the two episodes with friends and family, and she’s even kept in touch with a few of the other contestants. But other than being recognized at Starbucks a few times and gaining a larger social media presence, Jessica is most excited to see what’s next for her family and her business. Jessica’s kids, Ellie (8) and Miles (4), both spend time in the kitchen watching their mom work on orders. And she hopes to inspire them to find a passion for baking. “Ellie currently wants to be a rock star, but she loves to bake,” Jessica says. “She always loves being in the kitchen with me.” Her son, Miles, is a bigger fan of eating her final products than watching the magic happen, but Jessica hopes to pass on her beloved family tradition of cooking together. “I hope they will have memories of us doing that together SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

and that’s the reason they like to bake,” Jessica says. Jessica also hopes to inspire others to expand their baking knowledge with her new classes. She offers private decorating parties in her clients’ homes where they can invite friends and family to learn what it takes to create a pretty, polished cake. Everyone is given the same plan – designing a stacked cake – and can complete the task under Jessica’s careful instruction. “You get to learn something, take home a cake and eat it,” Jessica explains. “They are so fun.” She brings all the tools necessary to ensure her guests can accomplish a beautiful final product. And she hopes to show locals that with a little bit of practice, they too can make something they can be proud to serve. “People are often intimidated by the steps it may take or the amounts of ingredients you work with, but it’s not that difficult,” Jessica says. “It just takes time like anything else.” Through her private sessions, Jessica aims to show others what her self-taught training and even the show taught her: If you set your mind to a task, practice your skills and take a little bit of a leap, you can achieve your goals. “You can do things you are scared to do,” Jessica says. “If you practice like I did, you can do it.”

LOCAL LY R I C I S T

BY M ALE E SA S M I T H

A

s he accepted his Hollywood Music in Media Award, Devin Leigh looked over the crowd at Fonda Theater in Los Angeles. There were familiar faces, but not because he knew them personally. The likes of Justin Timberlake and Lady Gaga were also there as award nominees. It seems like the ultimate moment for a local singersongwriter. However, when you talk to Devin, he seems way more excited to tell you about the time he played for a live taping at Billy Bob’s in Fort Worth. “That moment was really special,” he says. “We were just hitting our stride as a band and that night was so cool, knowing that it was being filmed and added to this catalog of musicians who are legendary.”

ON THE ROAD

Born in Fort Worth and raised around North Richland Hills, it’s little wonder that playing at Billy Bob’s was a personal landmark for Devin Steinsultz (stage name Devin Leigh). He’s been playing music professionally for over 20 years, and the profession has taken him all across the nation. “I was obsessed with music when I got out of high school,” Devin recalls. “I went to Texas Tech, but all I wanted to do was play music. I came home from college and put a band together. We started playing bars around town. We got better and started getting traction.” The next few years included countless gigs, touring and a handful of Fort Worth music awards. But Devin wanted to grow as a lead guitarist, so when the band decided to go separate ways, he chose a new path as well. “That turned into an over 10-year long career of playing lead guitar for touring bands,” he says. “I toured the country. Every major city in the country, every major venue.”’ Devin lived out of suitcases, taking tour buses and vans to see parts of the country he would have never seen otherwise. He describes it as a “totally crazy lifestyle,” but it was through touring that he met his wife, Becky. She was from Arkansas and finishing her degree at the University of Arkansas. Devin was playing in the area, and Becky, without knowing what bands were playing, ended up going to the venue with a group of friends. By accident

or fate, she ended up backstage. It was there that Devin first heard his future wife’s laugh. “I didn't see her, but I heard her laughing and I spun around and before I saw her, I said 'Whoever is laughing, I'm gonna marry her,’” he says. “I could just tell. And then we saw each other and immediately knew.”

BACK HOME

They dated for a while, making it through long distance and touring. Soon after, she moved to the Dallas area, and they got married. Now, they run a music school with two campuses. Or as Devin would tell you, she runs the schools, he does maintenance. Between the Hurst and Keller campuses, the Stage Notes School of Music and Arts, has an enrollment of over 350 students and 30 teachers. Becky is classically trained in piano and started the school out of their apartment. It grew quickly, and they formally opened Stage Notes in 2008. Around that time, Devin decided to stop touring and play solo gigs around town. “I had to start over from scratch,” he says. “I went from having my road managers that would set my gear up for me to hauling my PA around by myself.” He started out playing five gigs per month, but that number soon grew to 25 gigs. Last year alone, he played 270 shows. But the major turn in his career took place three years ago when he simply Googled, “How to win a Grammy.” He was determined to set himself apart from other local musicians, and well, when in doubt, turn to Google. “I found a story about how a lady got a Grammy nomination from being a completely independent artist,” Devin explains. “So I followed her lead. It said you have to become a voting member of the Grammys in order to submit your music.” So he did just that. Of course, becoming a voting member of the Grammys is no easy feat. You have to submit a portfolio of commercially released music and prove that you are still active in your music career. “Luckily, I had already played on an album that had been released nationally,” he says. “So that wasn't a problem.” By becoming a voting member, Devin opened a lot of doors for himself. “I was now part of a community that had all of these Grammy winners and artists,” he says. “All these major artists started sending me their music and listening to mine.” It’s also what led him to being on stage at Fonda Theater in Los Angeles, accepting a Hollywood Music in Media Award for the genre of blues. He accepted the award in 2016 after being selected by some of the industry’s most premier members, including those from the Society of Composers & Lyricists, the Academy of Television Arts, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' music branch, the National Academy of Recording Arts, performing-rights organizations, film-music journalists and music executives. His other accomplishments include a Global Music Award, an Academia Award and being named to the Texas Blues Hall of Fame. “All of that ended up happening because of the high exposure I was getting through the Grammys,” Devin says. “I got my album through the first round of the Grammys three years in a row.” It’s been a wild ride for Devin and Becky as connections through the Grammy voting community have taken them to places they would have never expected. For example, the two were recently in an Off-Broadway production alongside Micky Dolenz of the Monkees and Annie Golden from “Orange is the New Black.” They have also had the opportunity to record with three-time Grammy Award-winning engineer, Tre Nagella, who has worked with artists such as Taylor Swift, Blake Shelton and Pitbull. While connections and opportunities could take him anywhere, it’s clear Devin is right where he wants to be: Home.

HITTING THE STAGE IN SOUTHLAKE

On May 11, Devin is adding onto his never-ending list of gigs by playing at FÜDTRUKY. He kicks off the event, playing from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. He describes his music as a mix of The White Stripes and Johnny Cash, and while it may be difficult to imagine those two sounds coming together, that’s all the more reason to come listen. He will be followed on The Marq’s stage by Doug Kent, a Texas native who describes his sound as homegrown country that’s fun and upbeat. Much like Devin, he has years of local experience under his belt. Switching it up from solo performances, School of Rock, a Southlake/Keller music group, hits the stage at 2:45 p.m. The group gives kids the chance to pick up skills in a fun environment, and those in the audience are sure to hear some familiar covers. Another local solo artist, Dan Quinn, will perform at 3:30 p.m. The Southlake one-man-band is known for his multi-instrumental arrangements of popular songs served with a twist. After that, it’s back-to-back bands with LIVE80 and Blaze of Glory. LIVE80, a high-energy ’80s party band from Dallas, will perform at 5:30 p.m. Their set will include everything from new wave music to pop favorites to hair metal bangers, so prepare for a change of pace Ending the night is Blaze of Glory, who will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. The Bon Jovi tribute band draws from the 25 years of hits from the global superstar and promises an authentic experience that will make you feel like you are experiencing the real thing.

Just Desserts

Creative Ways to Cater to Your Cravings BY ASHLE Y MADONNA

W

hen it comes to satisfying your sweet tooth, the Southlake area has an array of possibilities. And while you probably wouldn’t be able to finish a glazed donut before passing by another sweet shop, we aren’t talking about your run of the mill desserts (no shade on fried dough though). Local restaurants are going above and beyond to create memorable experiences with their temptations – not to mention with their flavor profiles. So to celebrate their triumphs, we’ve rounded up a selection of must-have desserts in the area.

SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

DESSERT EMPANADAS

Boca31 opened in Keller less than a year ago, but they have already become one of the most popular empanada stops in town. While their savory selection cannot be dismissed, their dessert empanadas offer a unique take on the cultural favorite. The mini guava and cream cheese Latininspired dessert provides that same crisp bite you look for in an empanada, but the sweet filling will send your taste buds soaring. The Latin fusion restaurant also offers mini Nutella and marshmallow empanadas for an even sweeter fix.

MUGGLE SHAKES FLIGHT

Colleyville’s Muggle Shakes brings new meaning to a frozen yogurt shop. Known for their stacked shakes, these wild desserts are just as fun to take in as they are to eat. Each comes with an array of messy fixings including marshmallows, cotton candy and even a unicorn horn. To try an assortment of their treats, order the flight. Made up of four mini shakes, you might think these smaller desserts would tone down their toppings, but you’d be mistaken. These smaller treats still bring all the drama of their larger counterparts. It’s a great way to let your kids experiment with all the flavors without ordering the entire menu. Their

SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

most popular flavors include the Panda – the closest to cookies and cream, the Campfire – a s’mores-inspired treat, Unicorn – a vanilla-based colorful wonder – and the Birthday Wish – a cake batter shake with all the sprinkles.

CHOCOLATE PIÑATA

If you have little ones that can’t help but play with their food, then a trip over to Grapevine’s Uncle Julio’s is a must for the chocolate piñata alone. This massive dessert demands attention as it is carried through the restaurant. Once the tray is placed on the table, guests have the chance to smash open the hanging dark chocolate with a mallet to access the fresh fruit and homemade churros inside. After the damage is done, there’s enough food for the whole table to get a taste of the extensive flavor combinations. With the different dipping sauces and whipped cream, every bite can be different. If you have a big party, get the Chocolate Lovers Pińata. The chocolate empanada bites give the hollowed-out chocolate treat a little more substance.

MAY 19 • 53

SEA-SALT CARAMEL FUDGE

As locals walk down Main Street in Grapevine, they’re sure to stop by the bay windows of the newest sweets shop in the area, Kilwins. Those lucky enough to wander by as their staff paddle out their handmade caramel are in for a treat. It’s captivating to watch as the team handles the scalding sugary substance and smooth it out on the store’s marble countertop. After it cools, the caramel is mixed into their treats – like the Sea-salt Caramel Fudge. The ribbons of the luscious sweetness add a bite to the indulgent fudge, and the Bail Pyramid sea salt flakes give brightness to the rich dessert. A little goes a long way with this treat, but its balanced flavors will keep you coming back for more.

BREAKFAST TRASH

North Richland Hills’ Lumi Snow Company offers an array of Taiwanese-inspired shaved snows adorned with lively toppings and sweets including cotton candy, fresh fruit and ample dollops of whipped cream. But the Breakfast Trash, a New York cheesecake shaved snow topped with Froot Loops and Captain Crunch, is a standout. With contrasting textures and different sweetness levels, this over-the-top dessert is something the whole family can get behind. Other flavors include Cookie Monster, Campfire Classic and Birthday Cake, so if you don’t think breakfast is the most important dessert inspiration of the day, you‘ll still have options. Be sure to ask about their dairy-free, gluten-free, keto-friendly and vegan options. They really think of everything.

KUNG-FU SESAME BALL

Southlake’s Dragon House offers a spread of Chinese options, but it’s one of their desserts that first made us do a double take. The Kung-fu Sesame Ball, a traditional fried rice flour pastry, commands attention. What starts out as a small sphere expands into a hollow, crisp yet chewy circle that’s intended to be shared. Once you start tearing off pieces, you won’t be able to stop until the whole buttery treat is gone. Whether you are familiar with this dish or are up to trying new sweets, this sesame ball is worth the trip out.

ELEMINT

Southlake’s latest ice cream addition, Creamistry, has shaken up what people should expect from the dessert go-to. The trained Creamologists mix all their desserts on the spot with premium ingredients to ensure their quality is maintained. And by using liquid nitrogen, each bite gives off optimal creamy lushness. Guests can choose everything from the base to the ice cream flavor to the toppings, but for a premade favorite, try the Elemint. The mint ice cream, Oreo cookies, chocolate chips and fudge create a balance between rich and light flavors while also satisfying any craving in sight.

THE CHOCOLATE BAG

Truluck’s offers a refined, destructible dessert option designed for two with The Chocolate Bag. This famous favorite has been a part of the Southlake food scene for years thanks to its playful design and rich flavors. The dark chocolate comes out in the shape of a brown paper sack, and it is filled with pound cake, berries, nuts and chocolate chips. Just in case that wasn’t enough sweetness, the dish is topped with caramel, chocolate sauce and whipped cream. It’s a great way to embrace a youthful memory while also treating yourself to a delectable dessert.

BROWN SUGAR PECAN BREAD PUDDING

Bread pudding is not hard to come by. But great bread pudding is an elusive find only a few restaurants have mastered. Grapevine’s home cooking café Mason & Dixie is one of them. Their Brown Sugar Pecan Bread Pudding served with butter bourbon sauce has a crisp exterior but offers a gooey inside that will melt in your mouth. Its hefty serving is enough for two, but we aren’t judging if you’d rather keep the whole thing for yourself.

FOR THE HEART, NOT ONLY THE STOMACH. The kitchen is the heart of your home—the source of life for your family. It fuels your day with early morning coffee, and makes homework better with after-school snacks. From loud family dinners to late night conversations, your kitchen is your faithful hub. f baking is considered a science, smoking is truly an art. There are temperatures you need to keep track of and steps to follow, but the extended time it takes to produce flavors allows home cooks to play as they go. Now with the Lynx Grill Sonoma Smoker, you can spend even less time standing over your food and more time relaxing with your family. The Sonoma Smoker holds everything you could need for your next cookout with dual racks that make up 1,000 square inches of cooking space. The high-tech smoker has a temperature range of 160 to 350 degrees, and it can go for up to six to eight hours without having to reload wood chips. Once you load everything in, the Sonoma Smoker takes care of the rest.

This Lynx product uses integrated technology to keep a consistent temperature and track your food’s progress. Because nothing is worse than building up those intense flavors and letting it all out when you open the hood. Using WiFi and the MyChef app, home cooks can check on their food with their phone, so they can walk away from the smoker and enjoy the rest of their day. The Sonoma Smoker is designed to keep up with professional pit masters, but it is also approachable for barbecue newbies. With its digital control panel and instant-read meat probe, it's easy to see just how much longer you have until you can dive into your smoked dishes. The Sonoma Smoker is available as a built-in countertop, freestanding appliance or mobile kitchen with an attached kitchen cart, so it’s easy to find the right model for your home.

FIVE MINUTES with ...

SOUTHLAKE MOM TURNED LOCAL ENTREPRENEUR BUILT HER BUSINESS BASED ON A NEED FOR HER KIDS

M

issy Reukema means business. What started out as an idea on a hot day transformed into two successful brands: Brilli Baby, a baby product line featuring the cupcatcher to help keep cups clean on the go, and HotSips, a reusable, eco-friendly straw. She didn’t intend to create her own company, but she saw a need in the market and filled it.

I AM A… germophobe. I admit it. My son loved to throw his sippy cup. We were at the zoo when he was probably 10 months old, and it was a super hot day. He threw his cup and it went into the gravel. There really wasn’t a bathroom nearby, and you can’t withhold hydration, so I just kind of wiped it with my shirt and handed it back to him. After that, we made the first rudimentary cupcatcher. WE INVENTED… the cupcatcher and Brilli Baby out of need. Becoming a mom and really not seeing a lot of products made in the USA, I felt there weren’t a lot of quality products out there. We really wanted to make something that was safe and something we were really proud of. THE FIRST STEP… was drawing it out, building it and then we started using it. We went to Chick-fil-A in Southlake, and it was a dad that stopped us and said, ‘What is that?’ We said, ‘Oh, this is a cupcatcher: It catches his sippy cup so it stays clean,’ and he said, ‘When can I buy it?’ It was that little bit of encouragement that made us realize there was a need for something like this. WE JUST KEPT ON… making it better. We originally had this idea in 2004, but back then, the only way to make a prototype was to make a mold, which cost about $25,000 to $30,000. You didn’t really know if what you were going to make was going to work. We always knew we wanted it to be one piece; we didn’t want it to break; we wanted it to be as safe as possible. It was finally our 17th rendition that we got patented for safety. It has a zigzag shape so you don’t have a risk of your child wrapping it around their arm. I then took my bonus from my job, and I made the mold and made enough of the cupcatchers just to break even. After that, we launched at the New York Toy Fair in 2014. IT WAS ONLY… my husband and I, and we met the VP of Sesame Street. She came by our booth and loved it. Every night we would go out to dinner and we were exhausted. And we were like, ‘Did that actually just happen?’ It was complete affirmation that we were on the right track. Immediately after the show we got into BabySteals, and then we got into Zulily. We went to another show, and we got into Buy Buy Baby. It truly is the hustle.

WHAT’S EXCITING IS… we work with all local factories in Dallas and Fort Worth. So we can meet with our factories and our material manufacturers and sit down in a conference room to ensure the quality, the consistency and the price point. SOMETHING THAT WAS EYE OPENING… to me was in the baby industry, some people will just straight up try to steal our product. A major baby manufacturer tried to take our product and I just had to go to them and say we are patented and I will sue you. I just won’t back down. I’m 100 pounds, 5’3” but if you are going to steal my baby, I’m going to come after you. I’ve been placated as, ‘Oh, you are just a mom.’ And to that, I’m like, ‘Oh no.’ EVERYTHING WE DO… we take in stride. We take an order and get to work. And then you build your next product. You keep building creative, innovative products. Our next product came out of a need. I had my teeth whitened, and I wanted a straw so I could keep the coffee and tea off my teeth. After doing research and not finding anything, I came home and told my husband. What we saw was a need. We were able to make our first HotSips straw in a day, find the right factories, meet with them to produce it and pick our colors. ONCE YOU MAKE YOUR FIRST PRODUCT… you think ‘I can do this.’ Our product, HotSips, was featured on the CBS Sunday Morning Show as a top tech gift of 2018, and we sold out in a matter of minutes. We actually got a fraud alert because there were so many sales. I am making a new product, which is an immediate HotSips and today I worked on my fourth product – we have another product coming out next year. I REALLY BELIEVE… we can achieve a lot together as a community. There is so much brilliance here, and there is no reason why we can’t do it together. When I use local businesses here, no one does each other wrong. We all respect each other. I WOULD TELL OTHER ENTREPRENEURS… to fight for what you believe in, and you can achieve anything you want. Just believe in yourself and choose the right partners.

Intimate Dining Dallas’ Lucia Accomplishes Sophisticated Dining In A Warm Environment

L LUCIA 408 W. Eighth St., Suite 101 Dallas 214.948.4998 LuciaDallas.com

72 • MAY 19

ocated in a historic building in the Bishop Arts District, Lucia is notably one of the hottest restaurants, and most sought-after reservation locations, in the Metroplex. With succulent starters, handmade fresh pastas and a robust wine list, the 14-table Italian restaurant is consistently bustling thanks to its dedicated patrons – old and new – and their palpable excitement. If diners plan ahead and reserve a table early – or arrive right when they open to snag a seat at the bar overlooking the display kitchen, they are in for a night of warm yet exquisite dining. And co-owner Jennifer Uygur, who owns Lucia with her husband chef and 2019 James Beard Award finalist David Uygur, says that’s done by design.

“We like the intimacy of our small space. It's cozy,” Jennifer says. “We wanted it to feel kind of like you're dining in our home.” The Uygurs have a special place in their hearts for Italy. Jennifer first traveled to the country at the age of 14 to see her aunt perform as an opera singer. She later studied abroad there, and she and David now often travel to Italy during their time off. While exploring different cities and trying new cafes, the couple became attracted to the array of quaint options for local diners. “David and I love finding off-the-beatenpath restaurants when we're traveling in Italy,” Jennifer says. “We wanted Lucia to feel like some of those places: small, relaxed but with great food and wine.”

SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

LOCALFLAVOR review

With that, Lucia was born. The seasonal menu rotates frequently, but it is centered on creating fresh, flavorful dishes. The Salumi Misti, a tasting of housemade cured meats, is an example of that. With flavorful slices of Red Wattle Coppa and Peach Pit Salame, diners will start to see how Lucia not only delivers cultural favorites but also fully embraces and celebrates the cuisine’s offerings. More adventurous diners should sample the foie gras stuffed prunes – available for $1 per prune – for their beautiful balance of rich flavors. When browsing through the pasta possibilities, which come in two different sizes, diners can rest assured they cannot make a bad choice. With mouthwatering options like the Casarecce with walnut and mushroom pesto and Tagliatelle with pork ragu and broccoli raab, you might want to order a few smaller plates to get a sampling of their creations. The entrees don’t disappoint. The Duck Leg Confit served with otto file polenta, hedgehog mushrooms, cippolini and broccoli raab comes out juicy. And the Cod with cauliflower, chard and olive-preserved lemon salsa verde offers a sense of brightness. To round out the meal, split one – or more – of the desserts with your table. Whether it’s their simply elegant Olive Oil Cake with prune jam and burnt cinnamon gelato or their lavish Banana Semifreddo with gianduja chocolate and coffee brittle, they have options that will satisfy any sweet tooth. After enjoying Lucia’s dishes once, guests will start to feel like regulars. With the owners routinely making the rounds to check on tables and their knowledgeable staff making recommendations along the way, it’s easy to see why people are so drawn to Lucia's dining. That's why their 14 tables are so hard to claim. “We're delighted when we hear guests planning their next reservation with us while they're still eating dessert,” Jennifer says. “Hopefully because they had fun!” To reserve a spot, guests can start checking 60 days out from their desired day. Or, for those who want a quicker reservation, you can be put on the restaurant’s notify list to snag someone else’s cancellation. No matter if you plan your dinner weeks in advance or take your chances at the bar, guests are sure to be captivated by Lucia’s picturesque plates, attentive service and passion for Italian cuisine.

Getting CAN-did Learn About The BRÜs Available At FÜDTRUKY There’s nothing like an ice-cold beer on a warm day, which is why we are so excited to have Shannon Brewing Company as FÜDTRUKY’s official beer partner. The Keller brewhouse, founded by Shannon Carter, prides itself for making beer the old-fashioned way while also embracing its natural beauty. Shannon Brewing Co. uses water from the oldest documented natural spring in Texas. And by brewing with fire throughout the entire process, all of their beers have a distinctive taste. “That gives us a unique caramelization in our sugars that translates into a unique flavor profile in all of our beer,” Shannon says. For those who want to gain insight to what Shannon Brewing Co. is all about, try the Shannon Irish Red. The malt-forward amber is lightly hopped, has caramel notes and balances sweet and bitter flavors. “The Irish Red has become kind of our staple beer,” Shannon says. “We brought that one out when we were a brand new brewery, and we got known for it. We would have many, many people say that if we ever change it, they would come after us.” Beer drinkers looking for a light option can enjoy the Shannon Crystal Wheat – a German-style Kristallweizen (clarified wheat beer). “This one is a really nice gateway beer,” Shannon says. “It’s the easiest one if you are not sure about craft beers.” Shannon Brewing Co. will also offer two IPAs – the Shannon Mór IPA and Shannon Love ’n Haze IPA – that go great with food. Both have citrus notes but definitely carry individualized characteristics. The day will also include a few surprises, so guests will have to come out to see all of Shannon Brewing Co.’s variety. No matter what you try, Shannon is excited to see people exploring and learning about new beers while also enjoying delicious food. He and his team will be out throughout the day to recommend pairings and educate guests on his one-of-a-kind brews. “I’m looking forward to trying some great food and seeing what’s out there,” Shannon says. Stop by the Aria Amphitheater at The Marq on May 11 to see for yourself.

Michelin-Rated Restaurants Worth The Trip

O

riginating from a small guide circulated in 20th century France, the Michelin Guide is one of the most respected and coveted accolades given to restaurants around the world. To earn these respected stars, chefs and owners must prove their establishment offers quality dining and brings a unique take to the culinary industry. Only a selection of restaurants around the world can claim to be Michelin-rated establishments, but there are several options for U.S. diners. There may not be any in Texas, but you don’t have to travel across the globe to enjoy top-of-the-line dining.

Chicago | Band of Bohemia The Windy City’s own Band of Bohemia was the first brewpub to receive a Michelin star thanks to its modern takes on classics. Now, the eclectic eatery continues to impress regulars and newcomers based on their upscale dishes and culinary brews. Their tap selection includes golden ales and rye heavy options that will make craft beer fans rejoice. They even offer a beer pairing option (for an additional $16 per person) as well as an optional wine pairing (an additional $35 per person) for those who want to enjoy their prix fixe menu for $65 per person. While items are subject to change, diners can expect vibrant dishes like the Scallop Ceviche with chartreuse, melon,

Guests can try everything from Tsar Nicoulai Caviar with smoked sturgeon, red beet and oxalis to Agnolotti with Liberty Farm duck, wild nettle and extravecchio balsamico on the tasting menu in the Dining Room for $295 per person. Henke has a special place in her heart for anything with labradorite, which is “the grey cousin of moonstone that can have beautiful flashes of blue, green and gold when the light hits it just so.” Henke has lived in Timarron for the past ten years, where she works out of a home studio. She has attended many Etsy bashes in the spring and fall, as they are “hands-down the top all-handmade show in Dallas.” She also recently celebrated 10 years and 1,000 sales on Etsy. “I am one of those people who always needs to be creating, and I feel lucky to have found jewelry making,” says Henke. “Learning new techniques, discovering new gemstones and making new pieces are all rewarding, but seeing another person pick up a piece, connect with my vision and see it in an expression of herself — that always gives me a thrill. It makes me happy to see my pieces go out into the world and be worn and enjoyed.”

All Hail the King! Listen As Elle King Sings About Life And Recovery At Her Upcoming Concert

T

attoos and blonde hair, raspy voice and poetic lyrics, unexpected and familiar — describing the enigma that is Elle King is impossibly complicated, which is one reason people love her so much. This CMA Award-winning and Grammy-nominated artist is part alternative country and part rock ’n’ roll with a little bit of pop thrown in. And she’s been topping charts since her first album, “Love Stuff,” dropped in 2015. After surviving a harmful marriage and divorce and struggling with alcohol, drugs, depression, PTSD and exhaustion, King turned to music. Writing and recording her sophomore album (“Shake the Spirit”) in 2018 with her band, The Brethren (partly in a studio in Denton, Texas!), turned out to be a beautiful experience that helped bring light and meaning back into her life. Fans can relate to — and celebrate — this emotional journey when King headlines the House of Blues this month.

The “Ex’s and Oh’s” singer will show off her new music and more grown-up personality on stage, performing hits like “Little Bit of Lovin’,” “Sober,” “Good Thing Gone” and “Shame” at this cozy venue. Opening the concert is folk-pop musician Barns Courtney, known for his 2015 hit “Fire” that was featured in Bradley Cooper’s “Burnt.” The Englishman will also play his latest hits, “99” and “Good Thing.” If you are looking for a wild night of partying to dance-pop anthems, then you’ll need to go somewhere else. But if you want music that equally speaks to your soul and gets stuck in your head, you’ll find it here. There’s a new King in town, and when she sings, you

JUSTIN WILLMAN: MAGIC IN REAL LIFE TOUR

May 10

MAY 10 HOUSE OF BLUES | Pulling rabbits out of hats is too boring for Justin Willman. He prefers asking random people off the street what they can’t live without, and then pulling said thing out of his backpack (like a coffee pot filled with brewed coffee and a mug to go with it). Willman specializes in doing tricks in real life with real people, which you can see for yourself on his Netflix series, “Magic for Humans.” Don’t trust the camera? See if you can unravel his illusions by seeing them with your own eyes at his upcoming show: Magic in Real Life. Magic may not actually exist, but it sure feels like it when this man is around! KAABOO TEXAS TASTE OF THE COWBOYS 15TH ANNIVERSARY

May 5

MAY 5 FRISCO | Nothing brings people together more than football, especially in Texas. The only thing better than seeing Dallas Cowboys play football is helping them raise money for kids in need, which you can do at the Taste of the Cowboys 15th Anniversary. The event features current players as well as legendary defensive tackle Chad Hennings and running back Preston Pearson. The night starts with tailgating at one of the 32 gourmet food stations, where you can also sip beer, wine and the famous Cowboys Rita. Later, see appearances from Cowboys players and cheerleaders and participate in the silent and live auctions. All proceeds benefit the North Texas Food Bank’s children’s programs, like Food 4 Kids and Kids Café and School Pantry, which work to eliminate food insecurity in kids. That’s better than a touchdown any day.

MAY 10-12 AT&T STADIUM | Imagine jamming out to 17-time Grammy Award-winning artist Sting, then walking outside and dancing to Pitbull, laughing at one of the stand-up comedians (like Brad Garrett from “Everybody Loves Raymond”) and enjoying state-of-the-art food and drinks. That’s what it will be like at KAABOO Texas, a three-day, multi-sensory music festival with more than 100 acts performing over six stages, amazing cuisine, contemporary art and more. Other headliners include The Killers, Lionel Richie, Kid Rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Little Big Town and many, many others across all genres. This is Arlington’s version of Coachella, except cleaner, cooler and with more entertainment packed into one place (feel free to still wear a flower crown, though). MIMOSA RUN

AMON! THE ULTIMATE TEXAN

MAY 11

MAY 9-25

PANTHER ISLAND PAVILION | Reward yourself for exercising and helping others at the 5th annual Mimosa Run benefiting the Mothers’ Milk Bank of North Texas. At the event, run the 2- or 4-mile course, then celebrate with sparkling mimosas and a warm brunch of eggs, bacon, French toast and breakfast potatoes! Afterward, enjoy live music and exploring local vendors. Each runner will come home with a commemorative T-shirt, a medal and the satisfaction of helping babies in need.

ARTISAN SECOND STAGE | Keller resident and “Dallas Morning News” columnist and founder of Summer Santa, Dave Lieber is rolling out a new project: “AMON! The Ultimate Texan.” The one-man play will honor the life and legacy of Amon G. Carter Sr., a legendary Fort Worth civic booster, benefactor and one of the giants of Texas journalism. The show runs throughout the month of May, and you won’t want to miss your chance to learn more about this ultimate Texan.

REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES

MEMORIAL DAY MUSIC FEST

THROUGH MAY 19

MAY 26

KALITA HUMPHREY’S THEATER | Much like today, being a U.S. immigrant in the 1980s was a scary thing. “Real Women Have Curves,” put on by the Dallas Theater Center, was written by Josefina Lopez and is based on her experiences of being a young Latina immigrant. The star of this story, Ana, works in a Los Angeles sewing factory and dreams of going to college. She bonds with the other ladies in the factory when they share their struggles, which include body image, little pay and the threat of deportation. At a time when immigration issues are dividing America, “Real Women Have Curves” is more important than ever.

KLYDE WARREN PARK | Bite into a mouth-watering gourmet burger with one hand and toss a frisbee to your friends with the other while enjoying the brilliant sunshine at Klyde Warren Park this month. Stop by on Memorial Day, the unofficial kick-off to summer, as the park is hosting a music festival for the first time ever! American flags will be proudly displayed over the lawn as families gather to listen to bands playing rock, jazz, country, classical and more on many different stages throughout the park. Take a break from the tunes to fill up on delicious fare from the on-site food trucks, explore vendor booths, take the kids to have their faces painted, play in the family game zone or snap photos of the stunning views of downtown Dallas. God bless America — and summertime!

May 22-26

MAY 22-26 WYLY THEATRE | Set your watch back 20 years, as “Cruel Intentions: The ’90s Musical” will make you feel like its 1999 again. Based on the popular ’90s film of the same name starring Sarah Michelle Geller, Ryan Phillipe and Reese Witherspoon (which was based on the French novel, “Les Liasions Dangereuses”), “Cruel Intentions” is a delightful throwback performance featuring hits from Boyz II Men, Christina Aguilera, REM, NSYNC and Britney Spears. Revenge, secrets, seduction and lies make this story incredibly addicting. Follow along as Sebastian Valmont and Kathryn Merteuil, a pair of rich step-siblings from Manhattan, place a bet on whether or not Sebastian can sleep with the innocent headmaster’s daughter, Annette Hargrove. What follows is a complicated, passionate journey that will leave you laughing, crying and reminiscing about love.

APEX Arts League will host a Mother’s Day concert featuring the Julius Quartet on Sunday, May 12. The evening’s performance will feature works that celebrate the influence women have had on music. Light refreshments will follow the night’s concert. MASTERWORKS PRESENTS: SOUTHLAKE COMMUNITY BAND MAY 18, 7 P.M. SOUTHLAKE TOWN SQUARE Enjoy free live music at Southlake Town Square this month. The city and Arts Council Northeast are joining forces to present this special MasterWorks concert. Southlake Community Band will take the stage at 7 p.m. and are sure to put on a fun performance. MEMORIAL DAY MARCH

MAY 26

GRAPEVINE

IRVING | Honor the lives of our fallen heroes this Memorial Day weekend by attending the Memorial Day March. Dress patriotically and run one mile, 5K or 10K along the scenic Campion Trail. Afterward, watch the sea of red, white and blue during the costume contest, cheer on the littles during the kids’ dash and discover goodies at the vendor booths. All guests will get a red, race-themed T-shirt and commemorative medal so you can remember this race — and our brave men and women — for many years to come.

The beloved three-day, family-friendly festival is back! Take in some lively entertainment, festival food and craft beers at the 35th annual Main Street Fest in Grapevine. Whether you come out with your little ones to enjoy the Midway games or leave them at home to take full advantage of the Craft Brew Garden, it’s sure to be a fun day out on the town.

in 500 Life - Upcycled

W

aiting in the car at 7:45 a.m., my youngest boy comes barreling out the door shouting “I am gonna be so late, Mom!” It’s as if my life has morphed into “Groundhog Day.” While sitting at the red light, I pray that nothing will require me to get out of this car. I am wearing mismatched PJs, slippers that read “coffee first” and thick magnifying glasses! Returning home, my day begins in earnest — cleaning dishes, making beds and picking up dirty clothes off the floor — before I head off to volunteer at Angel’s Attic, a nonprofit upscale retail store in Grapevine. At Angel’s Attic, people donate used clothing, shoes, household items, décor and furniture, and it is cleaned up and resold with proceeds going to local charities. Often, the furniture is just a bit tired and somewhat lost, so it goes to the furniture hospital for a little TLC, a coat of paint and new purpose. Now, I have never considered myself an artist, but I do like to play with colors and materials. I am one of three furniture doctors, all talented and generous volunteers. As I started painting that day, I realized the reason I am so drawn to this work is because I relate to the furniture. Here I am, a 48-year-old woman with two high school boys. I left a successful career as a New York City advertising executive to get married and start a family. Fortunate to have the option to stay at home and raise my boys, I traded in my Tahari pantsuits and Michael Kors handbags for some yoga pants and a diaper bag.

Being a mom meant being a superhero. I could make any “booboo” disappear with a kiss, and when my boys were sick, there was no stronger medicine than cuddling with Mom. It was heaven. A lot has changed in 16 years. As it turns out, I really know nothing, my sense of humor is not cool, talking in the car when friends are present is prohibited and interacting with them in any way is most definitely banned unless it entails giving them money, food or clean clothes. All that has defined me for the past decade and a half seems to have changed drastically, and there is no telling when it will stop! I imagine my youngest son saying, “Thank you for your years of loyalty, Mrs. Hyman, but your services are no longer needed here.” Just like the furniture I work on, I can feel tired and somewhat lost. The truth is life changes constantly. So on the days when things seem to have shifted out of place, I take a moment to notice that dings and scratches actually build character. They represent strength, give wisdom and help us appreciate something we often take for granted: time. It’s not over, far from it. We have a lot of life left. Maybe all we need is a little TLC, a refreshed perspective and a new purpose.

home STYLE Spiced-Up Spaces

N

o matter the season, kitchens are invariably the gathering place of a home. Sure, you may try to establish a traffic pattern that encourages guests to chat in the living room, but does anyone ever want to put space between themselves and food? Thankfully, kitchens have come a long way from the narrow, closed off floor plan that seemed to reign in past decades. Now, with the help of freestanding islands, your culinary haven is also the center to entertain in. Add a few trendy, aesthetically pleasing touches, and you and your guests won’t ever want to leave.

NO MORE KNOBS It may not seem like much, but parting ways with cabinet hardware can dramatically update your kitchen. This, in part, is because to successfully pull this off, you’ll need entirely new cabinetry. To completely forgo hardware such as knobs or handles, you’ll clearly still need another system in place to get to all of your dishes and goods. For a raw wood cabinet, consider a wood pull. This simply appears like an extension of the door or drawer, whether it is affixed horizontally or vertically. A second option is to purchase cabinets with designed cutouts. This generally looks best with rectangular

cutouts, but if your space is geometrically gifted, try a circular or triangular cutout design. Whatever you choose, choose carefully. No one wants to reinstall cabinets on a regular basis.

OUT IN THE OPEN If you are Type A, this one’s for you. Open shelving is having a moment, and while it looks beautiful when executed correctly, the trend leaves no room for clutter. It seems like we’re always seeing lovely Instagram photos of kitchens with an open shelf or two, serving as both a home to dishes and a decorative accent. A nice bonus if you’re not Type A – this style forces you to stay organized. FREE, FREESTANDING No man is an island, but your kitchen island can sustain the weight of entertaining for you. But, not all kitchen islands were created equal. Freestanding, footed islands have the ability to give your kitchen an airy, flexible feel while also adding to your counter and eating space. However, if you prefer islands to house the kitchen sink, this look is likely not for you. If you’re especially into entertaining and hosting, consider extending the island to include seating. Lately, the sky is the limit with bar seating around an island.
