Growing up in my parent’s house, pizza night was not the relaxing endeavor it is today. On the contrary, my mother would come home from work and get right to mixing dough. Our options for pickup were distant, and delivery in rural, upstate New York was nonexistent. One could imagine the angst of telling a teenager today to wait an hour or two for the dough to rise and bake. Hours of anticipation led to minutes on the plate. Mom’s pizza was always worth the wait. Thanks to several locally owned pizzerias, homestyle pies are just minutes away. In March, we asked you to vote for Southlake’s favorite pizzerias in our online bracket, Mozz Madness. Hundreds of votes came and the winner, Armend’s Restaurante, has been serving Southlake for two generations. Make plans to bring your family to say hi to Armend himself, who is always on hand tossing dough and making sure everything is just how his mom and dad would have made it. Pizza is all about family time, and so is time around the campfire, according to Solo Brands CEO John Merris. When the Southlake resident joined Solo Stove in 2018, the company had just seven employees. After spearheading several key acquisitions and an initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange, he now presides over a blazing $2 billion directto-consumer outdoor lifestyle company with more than 400 employees. Recently the Solo Brands team launched “Pi,” their innovative outdoor pizza oven. It goes to show that no one outgrows the desire for a good slice. Yours in Southlake Style,

CAKE POP BAKER
SERVING SWEETNESS ONE BITE AT A TIME
ask A. . alicia lynch
HOW DID YOU GET INTRODUCED TO BAKING? Baking has been a lifelong passion of mine. I’ve baked with my grandmothers ever since I was a child. We would make everything together, including peanut butter balls, cookies and, of course, cake pops. We were all very close. I feel like it is almost my culinary heritage. WHEN DID YOU START YOUR OWN BUSINESS? Cake Pops By Alli was kind of born by accident. In 2020, my two daughters’ colleges shut down and they were out of a job. My oldest asked me to make some cake pops so they could try and sell them on Facebook. As a mom, I was just excited to bake and spend time with my girls. We sold out our very first weekend and decided to try it all over again. WHAT KIND OF FLAVORS DO YOU OFFER? Our standard flavors are chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, lemon and cookies and cream. We’ll also do seasonal flavors like peppermint, red velvet, chocolate mint, carrot cake and more. WHY DO YOU THINK PEOPLE ENJOY YOUR CAKE POPS? For one thing, they have an enormous shelf life. Our cake pops last three weeks in the refrigerator and three months in the freezer, so you don’t have to feel pressed on when to enjoy them. I also feel like there’s something about giving people a gift that was custommade for them. WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE ASPIRATIONS? We became an LLC just a year ago and bought our first commercial kitchen with plans to expand to a larger one by the end of the fall. We are also in the process of rolling out franchises within the next 12 months and hope to become the next big national baking brand within the next three years. WHAT ARE YOU MOST GRATEFUL FOR WITH CAKE POPS BY ALLI? Every day I walk into that bakery, I feel my grandmothers from the rafters cheering me on. I didn’t know this was the plan. I didn’t know this was going to be my path, but I’ve always wanted to cook for people. Now here I am, many years later doing just that. I feel overwhelmingly blessed, and I love sharing every bite that comes out of this bakery.

A New Era Of Downton Abbey
A
sprawling Yorkshire country estate carrying centuries of history. Maids and servants scurrying around the mansion. British aristocrats and all of the drama that comes with them. These are just a few reasons why people love the television series turned cultural phenomenon “Downton Abbey,” which returns to the big screen for a second time with a brand-new movie. Created by “Gosford Park” and “The Gilded Age” showrunner Julian Fellowes, “Downton Abbey” follows the high-class antics of the Crowley family in 1920s Northern England. The series features a massive all-star cast including “Paddington” actor Hugh Bonneville, “Defending Jacob” star Michelle Dockery and Professor McGonagall herself Maggie Smith. While the prestigious costume drama finished its TV run in 2015, this Emmy Award-winning series saw new life in 2019 with its first feature-length film, in which the household welcomed King George V. Now the Crowleys return in “Downton Abbey: A New Era,” where the family faces their biggest challenge yet: Hollywood film production. But these aren’t the only Brits in theaters this month. “The Power Of The Dog” star Benedict Cumberbatch returns for Marvel’s newest magical fantasy “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness.” But Tom Cruise is taking flight too when he returns to the pilot’s seat after 36 years in “Top Gun: Maverick.” And if you’re looking for laughs, the girl group “Girls5eva” is back for a hilarious new season. After all, the ladies of “Downton Abbey” aren’t the only ones who just want to have fun.

rom long-standing pizza parlors to national chains that firmly planted their local roots, pizza will always have a home in Southlake. With several restaurants offering up their own delicious combinations of crust, sauce, cheese, meat and veggies, there are many ways to enjoy our favorite pies. No matter how you slice it, Southlake is proud of its pizza. While many were entranced by the NCAA basketball championships, Southlake Style set out to find readers’ favorite pizza through Mozz Madness, our head-to-head bracket-style competition that spanned three hard-fought rounds. Ultimately, one pizzeria triumphed over the rest, claiming the title of Southlake’s superior slice.

ARMEND’S RESTAURANTE In 1994, husband-and-wife team Mirxhan and Asim Seji opened Armend’s Restaurante, lovingly named after their elder son, on White Chapel Boulevard. Originally opening as a fine dining restaurant, the Macedonian natives rebranded to focus more on pizza and pasta after Armend’s relocated to its current location on Southlake Boulevard more than two decades ago. Continuing to delight both longtime and newer Southlake residents for generations, the Italian restaurant shines as a community staple through its delicious fare, giving spirit and love for family. “It’s been great,” says Armend Seji, the restaurant’s namesake and second-generation owner. “There is no better community than ours.” Working at the Italian eatery since the age of 15, Armend has seen thousands of customers come and go from behind the cozy restaurant’s counter. But what keeps diners coming back is the establishment’s commitment to serving nothing but the best. “Everything is made from scratch, from our dough to our sauce,” Armend explains. The most popular pies at the Southlake staple include its margarita and Italian special pizzas, the latter of which comes with the diner’s choice of six different toppings. Meanwhile, Armend considers himself a cheese connoisseur. “My personal favorite pizza is just a plain cheese pizza, where no extra flavors are taken away from our delicious cheese and homemade pizza sauce,” he says. Whether it’s the classic pepperoni or a healthier vegetarian pie, every pizza that leaves Armend’s kitchen is hot, fresh and deliciously devourable. “My favorite compliment is that everything is always consistent and wonderful,” Armend says. Just as the community supports his restaurant, Armend works to give back that support tenfold. Alongside showing up at community events like Taste Of Southlake, donating food to city staff or giving back to local schools and churches, Armend can often be seen out and about in the local dining scene. “I try to support all of our local restaurants in our town,” he says. “If I’m not eating at Armend’s, I’m eating somewhere in Southlake.” With 28 years in business under his belt, Armend is more than ready for another 28 years in the community he holds so dearly. “It means a lot to my family and staff to know every day that we are in a community that loves having us here,” Armend says. “We cannot be more thankful for all of the love and support we have gotten throughout the years.” 18 • MAY 22

RUNNER-UP i FRATELLI With the speed of a national chain but the flavor and heart of a homegrown brand, i Fratelli burst onto the Southlake pizza scene 18 years ago. Since then, locals can’t get enough of its thin ‘n crispy pizza that satisfies with every bite. “We are proud to be your neighborhood pizza parlor,” assistant manager Ari Atterhold says. “We strive to provide a comfortable and inviting experience for pickup or delivery.” Some of the pizzeria’s most popular pies include the Big Brother, which comes topped with Italian sausage, pepperoni, bell pepper and green onion, or the del Bianco pizza, which features Bianco sauce, breakfast bacon, Roma tomato and spinach. Meanwhile, Ari always goes for a margarita pizza with grilled chicken. “Our GM recommended that pizza when I was first hired,” Ari says. “It's been a favorite ever since.” Beyond its all-natural toppings, some of the secrets to i Fratelli’s flavor can be found in the foundation of every pie, along with the help of a well-known herb. “Our pizza dough is mixed fresh daily,” Ari explains. “Each i Fratelli pizza is topped with a sprinkling of oregano before baking. It adds that extra pop of flavor to each slice.” No flavor is compromised, even while the pizza is baking in the oven. “Our pizzas are rolled by hand and baked in stone-deck ovens at very high temperatures,” Ari says. “This method achieves our distinctive crispy crust.” Cultivating community spirit through partnerships with Carroll ISD, Art In the Square and other local nonprofits, the beloved pizza brand loves serving both the city and its residents. “It is rewarding to cultivate and maintain relationships with our customers and provide the perfect pizza they crave,” Ari says. 20 • MAY 22

LADY DRAGON SOCCER WINS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP The Lady Dragon soccer team has added yet another state championship to its list of achievements. On Saturday, April 16, the Lady Dragons defeated Rockwall 4-0 to win the state championship. During the match, freshman Kennedy Fuller — the game’s MVP — achieved a hat trick, scoring three of the Dragons’ four goals. The other goal was made by Zoe Matthews during a free kick in the second half of the game. This is the third overall state championship for the team, which previously won state in 2019 and 2008. “This team is special in many ways,” head coach Matthew Colvin says. “From the youth to the incredible senior leadership, they were able to find a common goal and together prepared every day to reach that goal.”

MALAI KITCHEN NAMED AMONG BEST BRUNCH SPOTS IN AMERICA One of Southlake's most beloved Thai franchises was recently named one of the best brunch spots in the nation. In late March, “Thrillist” published a list of the 41 best brunch spots in America, and Malai Kitchen was one of them. With four restaurants in Southlake, Dallas and Fort Worth, Malai Kitchen was highlighted for brunch entrees like the Thai Eggs Benedict with coconut biscuits and Thai chili hollandaise, the Congee with chicken and egg and the Banh Mi French Toast, as well as its all-day Sunday happy hour. “Thai and Vietnamese cuisines may not seem like they’d translate well to brunch, but anyone doubting the deliciousness will be thoroughly convinced from the very first bite,” writes “Thrillist.” Malai Kitchen’s Southlake restaurant is located at 1161 E. Dallas’ Mozzarella Company Founder Champions All Things Cheese
D
uring her time living there, Paula Lambert fell head over heels in love with Italy. A lifelong Texan, she came home to Dallas feeling so inspired by her dining experiences overseas that she started the Mozzarella Company in 1982. Since then, Paula’s company has embraced all things cheese, expanding to make more than 30 kinds — from feta and queso fresco to mascarpone and scamorza — all by hand. With this year marking 40 years in business, Paula is molding a legacy right here in the Metroplex.
I LIVED IN… Italy for five years in the late ’60s and early ’70s before I got married. I loved everything about Italy. I loved the architecture and the colors and the sunlight and the wine and the food. So when I came back to the United States in 1973, I missed all those things a lot. I started to think of a way that I could have a business that would involve Italy. I CAME UPON THE IDEA… of making fresh mozzarella because I had loved the mozzarella and tomato salad that they had in Italy. The mozzarella was very soft and creamy and moist, and we didn’t have anything like that in the United States, in Texas especially. So I decided that I would make it myself. I LEARNED HOW… to make it and I started my factory in 1982. It felt great. I could have the fresh mozzarella that I loved. WE MAKE… 100,000 pounds of cheese a year, and it’s all by hand. All of our cheesemakers are women, and they’re very good at doing this. WE HAVE… 15 employees, 30 to 40 different cheeses and sell to about 100 accounts, including restaurants, hotels, stores and such. Plus, we sell to distributors who sell to many more customers. WHEN WE FIRST STARTED, WE ONLY… made fresh mozzarella and ricotta. As time progressed from the very beginning, I saw that we couldn’t make it. The company was not selling enough, because all we had was mozzarella and ricotta. I DECIDED TO GO BACK… to Italy and travel around the country and visit little cheese factories in little villages… I observed them making different cheeses. I took notes, and when I returned to Dallas, I began experimenting and creating my own recipes. I definitely put my own spin on the new cheeses I created by adding various chiles and herbs. And [I smoke] my cheeses over pecan shells, because the pecan is the state tree of Texas. WE BUY COW’S MILK AND GOAT’S MILK… and it’s all locally sourced from small family farms. Then we make it into different kinds of cheese. One thing you can think about is that cheese is concentrated milk.
40 • MAY 22
A gallon of milk weighs 8.6 pounds, and out of that 8.6 pounds, you get one pound of cheese. IT TAKES ABOUT SIX HOURS… to make the mozzarella, and other cheeses are put into molds so they have a shape after they’re drained. Then they are aged. IT TAKES GREAT ATTENTION… to detail. The milk is a little different every day; you might have to adjust the cultures or the rennet. You [have to] smell and touch and know the curds, if they are maturing and it’s making a consistent product. That’s the most important thing. I’VE HAD A LOT OF FUN… creating these cheeses. Now we make Mexican cheeses, and I’ve been influenced by French cheeses. I just take influences that I’ve had in eating different things in different parts of the world and incorporate them into my cheeses. I LOVE EATING… the cheese. I think our products are delicious, and I just love them. I also like to cook. I’ve written two cookbooks, and they’re all [about] cooking with cheese. MY FAVORITE CHEESE… is fresh mozzarella, and the one after that is fresh goat cheese. I just love these delicate, subtle flavors. You can taste the milk in these cheeses, and they’re not too strong. I think they’re just perfect. CUSTOMERS LOVE… our cheeses, and they can buy them at all these wonderful stores — Central Market, Whole Foods, Tom Thumb. WE ALSO HAVE… cheese-making classes down at the cheese factory. People love to come to that. We teach them how to make mozzarella, and they take the cheese home with them. FORTY YEARS FEELS… incredible. To think that I started with this idea and this love of this cheese that I had had in Italy and… more than half my life has now been consumed by this cheese. I’ve had so much fun and met so many wonderful people and become friends with all these people I would’ve never had the chance to know.

here are few things worse than realizing your favorite sparkling wine has gone flat, especially when you’re ready to celebrate a special moment with family and friends. Preserve your carbonation and keep the good times rolling with the Coravin Sparkling Wine Preservation System. With four capsules included, this system’s charger fills your bottles with carbon dioxide, ensuring your wines stay as bubbly as they were when you first bought them. With each capsule capable of preserving up to seven 25.4-ounce bottles, the Coravin can fortify the fizziness of any sparkling spirit.
But this product doesn’t just revive flat beverages — it also protects them. Once those sparkles have been saved, the system’s stoppers lock in your wine air-tight to keep it bubbly fresh for up to four weeks at a time. Fitting both standard and magnum-sized spouts, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a bottle that won’t work with the Coravin. Whether you need to resuscitate a vintage varietal from your cellar or safeguard bottles that are still fizzling, the Coravin Sparkling Wine Preservation System will give you something to toast to again and again.

SOLO BRANDS CEO IGNITES THE OUTDOOR LIFESTYLE MARKET BY LORI STACY PHOTOS BY EMILEE PRADO
J
ohn Merris will admit that he had an idyllic childhood. Growing up on a 50-acre ranch outside of Austin, he spent countless weekends around the campfire, telling stories, stargazing and simply enjoying what he refers to as the greatest pastime ever — hanging out with friends and family next to the warm glow of a wood-burning fire. It’s not surprising that those nights left a lasting impression on Merris. Time spent outdoors gathered next to a campfire, after all, tends to have that effect. So when brothers Jeff and Spencer Jan contacted Merris about taking the top position of their small-butgrowing portable stove and firepit business, perhaps he was swayed a bit by a firsthand knowledge about the allure of campfires. “You can imagine coming full circle to, ‘Hey, do you want to run a company that manufactures fire pits?’ I’m thinking, that’s what I did for fun as a kid on the ranch,” Merris says of his reaction when the brothers first approached him. At the time, Merris was firmly ensconced in his role as chief revenue officer for Clarus, a global manufacturer of glass boards based in Fort Worth. And Solo Stoves, as the company was known then, was a sixperson, Southlake-based business. But Merris, who graduated from Brigham Young University and has an MBA from the University of Texas, was ready for a challenge and a change. Prior to Clarus, he had spent three years as a vice president at Irving-based MultiView, a digital marketing and communications company. While he was instrumental in driving sales growth at both companies, he didn’t want to be pigeonholed into a sales role. “I really felt like if I could have more control over broader strokes of the business, then I could do more,” Merris says. He joined Solo Stove as CEO in 2018, and to say that it has been a whirlwind four years would be a huge understatement. Since he took the helm, Solo Brands, as the company is now known, has acquired three other companies: Oru Kayak, which produces foldable boats; Chubbies, a men’s casual clothing brand; and ISLE, which manufactures paddleboards. In 2020, Merris was named Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year for the Southwest Region. And in October of last year, Solo went public, which has transformed the business into a $2 billion global enterprise, trading on the New York Stock Exchange as “DTC,” a nod to its direct-to-consumer business model. 48 • MAY 22
JOHN MERRIS is
STOKED
FOR
D SUCCESS
That moment of ringing the bell on the podium of the New York Stock Exchange alongside his wife Cindy and members of his team was magical for Merris. “It was really humbling to be in the building and to see, you know, Alexander Hamilton’s handwritten first trade ever done on the New York Stock Exchange, and all of the companies that are there that have made their equity accessible to the world,” says Merris. “To be numbered and named amongst that is pretty awesome.” The IPO was also the culmination of a grueling few years and was what Merris calls “the heaviest lift” he’s ever done in business. The company had a $2 billion valuation the day it went public, but for Merris, it wasn’t an exit for him — nor was it intended to be a big moneymaking moment. “This was Day One of the next decade,” he says of that momentous day. “To build a brand that’s going to be around 50 years from now — that’s what we’re really about.” He continues, “The public offering really put our company on the map from a marketing standpoint. We’re a heavily-focused direct-to-consumer business, meaning we market directly to the customer and ship the product right to them… And so that’s created a one-to-one relationship. The IPO allowed us to allow our customers — who have really made this happen for us — become shareholders. Now, everyone can be an owner.” While the company headquarters recently moved from Southlake to a larger space in Grapevine, Merris remains firmly planted in Southlake, where he lives with his wife and their five children, who range in age from 2 to 14. They love to travel, and the family is currently building a second home in Utah. But that might be the extent of Merris’ limited leisure time. “I tell people I don’t have hobbies — I have kids,” jokes Merris, whose days are now centered around maximizing time spent with family while handling the demands of being the CEO of a $2 billion public company. COOKING UP NEW PRODUCTS Since Merris joined the company as employee No. 7, it has grown to more than 500 employees who are spread out not just among their North Texas headquarters, but also fulfillment operations in Pennsylvania and Salt Lake City, Utah; satellite headquarters of the brands they’ve acquired, including Oru Kayak’s Oakland, California, offices, ISLE in San Diego and Chubbies in Austin; plus team members working from home in a couple dozen states. In August, Solo Brands opened a warehouse and fulfillment center in Rotterdam, Netherlands, to focus on their evergrowing European customers. International sales are one way the company will grow. Another way is through innovation, coming up with new products that fit into their portfolio of brands. To that end, Solo has introduced a product that will upend outdoor cooking: Solo Pi is an affordable ($470), portable outdoor pizza oven that quickly cooks crispy-crusted pizza. “We’re ecstatic about Pi,” says Merris. “If you think about it, we have these four awesome outdoor brands: Solo Stove, Oru Kayak, ISLE and Chubbies. And our brand mantra is ‘Good moments, lasting memories.’ That’s what we’re all about. Anyone who’s made dough, rolled it out, put all the toppings on it with their friends and family and made a pizza together… You talk about smiles and mo50 • MAY 22

ments and memories. It just fits so well. So we thought, ‘Why don’t we go out and really make a great, differentiated product that can do this even better than anything that’s out there?’” Launched on March 14, aka Pi Day, and shipping to customers beginning this July, the product is the culmination of more than a year of development, utilizing Solo Stoves’ signature airflow construction so that pizzas are perfectly cooked after around 100 seconds. They use the same high-grade stainless steel as the Solo stoves and firepits and, like the stoves, Pi will work using either wood or a blend of wood and gas. In addition to the lineup of stoves, fire pits and the new pizza oven, Solo Stove offers accessories to make the experience of outdoor firepits even better, such as a bundle of Juniper firewood from New Mexico, with an aromatic scent that will turn anyone’s campfire into the envy of the neighborhood. In fact, Merris’ favorite Solo product is the roasting sticks. These foldable dual-pronged stainless steel stakes are great for roasting marshmallows, brats or whatever else might be tasty when roasted over a Solo stove. They come in a chef roll and fold out to 36 inches apiece, keeping one far enough from the fire to make the cooking experience enjoyable and not uncomfortable. “They’re incredible,” Merris gushes. “It’s things like that have enhanced the experience and made our products even more fun to use.” SOLO’S NEW SPOT All of the products are fulfilled in-house, meaning Solo Brands requires large warehouse spaces. That’s in part what precipitated the move to the new Grapevine warehouse, headquarters and showroom, located just a short distance away from DFW Airport and from Merris’ home in Southlake. Walking through the vast showroom, you get the sense of what Merris and his team have grown this business into — an all-encompassing outdoor lifestyle brand. Products are on display amid quaint, lifelike scenes featuring their brands — a Solo portable fire pit set up outside of an Airstream trailer, a camping scene centered around Solo stoves, Oru kayaks and ISLE paddleboards flanking a larger-than-life photo mural of an inviting river. Nearby, a display of Chubbies water-friendly and active clothing makes you long for the weekend. While it’s not a retail store per se, customers can order products from an iPad or from their phones and walk out with the product thanks to some amazing technology on the other side of the showroom wall. That’s where robots guide warehouse workers through the aisles, directing them to products as they fill orders. This type of technology allows the company to fulfill about 500,000 orders a month. As one might expect or hope from a company that’s all about enjoying the great outdoors, there’s also a cool vibe to its offices, a feeling that you’re outdoors instead of inside working — from a replica of a dogtrot house smack dab in the middle of the offices to the firepit sconces along the walls. There’s company-wide grilling, pizzamaking and fire pitting on a weekly basis as well. Solo Brands also has a culture that you might expect from an outdoor lifestyle company. It’s a place where employees do community service projects together, like 52 • MAY 22

cleaning up parks and planting trees. The company also has a comprehensive culture statement that team members are encouraged to live and work by, with values that are all based around the idea of being a good person, something its executives feel begins at home with your children, spouse, family and friends. “We try really hard, both as an organization collectively and at the individual level, to truly be the good and to inspire that good in the customers that we bring into the fold,” Merris says. TAKING IT HOME Though idyllic in its own way, Southlake is vastly different from the 50-acre ranch of Merris’ youth. Yet, Merris is still able to create the same kinds of campfire memories for his children that he had as a child, thanks to the suite of products his company sells. “What I love the most about Solo Stove is that we give everyday people the opportunity to create these amazing moments in their backyard without having to live on a ranch or pack up the car for an official ‘camping trip,’” says Merris. “It’s as easy as walking into your backyard and lighting up your Solo Stove, and in 10 minutes you're telling stories, laughing and making lifelong memories.” Just like those of his own childhood.
A DAY IN THE LIFE: JOHN MERRIS CEO OF SOLO BRANDS THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS A TYPICAL DAY FOR THE CEO OF A $2 BILLION COMPANY, BUT MANY DAYS FOR MERRIS FOLLOW A SIMILAR STRUCTURE. 5:30 a.m. Merris’ day begins early, before the kids are up, when he is able to get in a workout at the gym. “It’s the closest thing I have to a hobby,” he says, admitting that he prefers to exercise when the kids are still asleep so as not to take away even more family time than his job requires. 6:30-8 a.m. Merris helps the kids get ready for the day, which usually involves “dropping one or multiple kids off at school.” 8 a.m.-5 p.m. If he’s not traveling, Merris works from his office at Solo Brands’ Grapevine headquarters. His daily calendar is generally full of one-on-one sync ups with his team and a wide variety of public company-related activities. Merris also reaches out regularly to other CEOs and entrepreneurs to share ideas and explore new opportunities. 5:30 p.m. Merris makes it a point to be at home in the evenings, spending time with the family and putting the kids to bed. After the kids are asleep, Merris gets back on his computer, responding to emails and getting work done before calling it a night.

t wasn’t goodbye, just see you later. Sfuzzi (pronounced Foo-zi), the Dallas eatery that charmed the Metroplex until 2013, has returned to give diners the delicious flavors of Italy that they crave. Spearheaded by This & That Hospitality partners Brandon Hays and Phil Schanbaum, the restaurant reopened in March after being closed for eight years and features refined Italian dishes alongside high-end cocktails and its well-known bellini. “It's been fantastic to have this full circle moment and to have all the nostalgia while going
through the creative process,” Brandon says. With 4,000 square feet of interior space and a 2,000-square-foot patio, Sfuzzi can welcome up to 170 guests at a time to indulge in its wide-ranging cuisine. “A majority of the items [are] fan favorites from the previous location,” Phil says. “Chef Irwin Torres and Chef Peja Kristic worked together and created some fabulous new dishes that complement the other menu items well.” Start the night off with a fresh cocktail like the Il Mulo, which is rosemary-infused Teramana Silver Tequila, Ilegal Joven Mezcal, lime, hibiscus

and ginger beer. The Spritz Thyme features Aperol, grapefruit, lemon, thyme and prosecco, and the Push Pop comes complete with Napoleon liqueur, vanilla syrup and prosecco. Fans of Sfuzzi will also delight in the return of that famous frozen bellini alongside a wine list that includes three rosé varieties, eight different Champagnes, 13 white wine options and 20 kinds of red wine. For those who enjoy a cold one with their meal, Sfuzzi has 18 different types of beers and seltzers ranging from Bud Light and Modelo to Truly and Yuengling. The flavor journey continues from there with eight different shareable appetizers to choose from. The beef carpaccio, served with focaccia, showcases thinly sliced prime filet, arugula, aged Parmesan cheese, pickled red onion, caper gremolata and truffle oil, while the crispy calamari delights with tomato sauce, parsley and lemon twist. The crispy portobello mushroom fries, served with tomato aioli and lemon twist, will kick-start any dinner, and it’s always a good decision to order the meatballs. “The expectations from a neighborhood restaurant aren't the same as they were then,” Brandon says. “Guests want to be able to have elevated dishes when dining out no matter where they are so it was important to us to create something that would appeal to them.” Moving on to the main course brings diners to a wealth of delicious Italian cuisine. It’s never a mistake to order a classic like chicken Parmesan or lasagna, but even more entrees exist for those who want a bolder taste of Italy. Spring for the oven-baked sea bass with puttanesca sauce or the pork chop piccata, which highlights a 14-ounce roasted pork chop with creamy saffron risotto and a caper-piccata sauce. Sfuzzi doesn’t skimp out on the pasta either. Besides traditional favorites like spaghetti and bolognese, Sfuzzi serves up deliciousness with its pesto fusilli, which presents rosemaryroasted chicken and Parmesan cheese in creamy basil pesto, and its spicy vodka rigatoni, which comes with vodka-tomato sauce, Parmigiano-Reggiano and crushed red pepper. “We wanted to make improvements where possible,” Phil says. “Sourcing the best produce, incorporating local markets like Jimmy's sausage on our Sausage Rustica pizza. Our goal is always to find ways to provide the best flavors for our guests.” Pizza is a whole other affair at Sfuzzi, with seven different pies to choose from. Some of the signature options include pepperoni and margherita pizza, while the breakfast pizza brings the morning vibes with a sunny side egg, bacon strips, cherry tomato, 24-month aged prosciutto and tomato sauce. Plus the veggie pizza, which is topped with pesto zucchini, squash, cherry tomatoes, roasted peppers and buffalo mozzarella, provides even more interesting flavor combinations. Complete your Italian evening out with one of Sfuzzi’s desserts. The restaurant offers chocolate ganache, tiramisu and espresso ice cream pie to diners looking for a sweet finish to their night. Whether you were a fan of the original restaurant or look forward to experiencing its rebirth, Sfuzzi is ready to welcome you to Italy with great food, drinks and experiences. “We love to hear the good, the bad and the ugly… fortunately, there hasn't been any bad and ugly,” Phil says. “We're overwhelmed by the positive response. We're so, so happy to see happy faces on our guests.”

Truly Texan Rodeo Bar Reopens At The Adolphus Dallas’ iconic Rodeo Bar is back in action. Originally opening in 1981, the tavern served guests for over four decades before it closed in 2018 for renovations, according to a press release. Now with an updated interior and menu, Rodeo Bar is honoring the spirit of Texas with its dishes, drinks and live entertainment. “Reopening a legacy bar with an already built-in narrative, it was critical that we preserve and honor the heart and soul of the original concept,” says Justin Fields, Makeready senior vice president of restaurants, bars and retail. “Quite literally we asked ourselves, ‘How do we retain the past while setting the stage for the next 40 years?’” Seating 95 patrons, Rodeo Bar features new and vintage booths, tables and seats with an expansion in The Back Room, where live music plays every Friday and Saturday night. Whether you decide to start the night off with a cocktail, beer or glass of wine, Rodeo Bar has options that will keep things fresh with every visit. Try the Rodeo ‘Rita, made with tequila, Cointreau, lime and a tajin rim, or the Stetson Slinger, which features whiskey, lemon, orgeat syrup and sugar. The tavern also boasts a handful of beer and wine varieties, from Corona and Budweiser to rose wine and cabernet sauvignon. “We loved the idea of an old-school Texas tavern where you walk up, order swiftly and get back to eating and drinking,” Justin says. “This is a no-nonsense bar with friendly service serving approachable fare influenced by Tex-Mex and traditional Texas cuisine.” Glorifying everything Texan, Rodeo Bar features a number of familiar dishes, including chopped beef, carne asada steak, pecan-smoked pork belly burnt ends and the Hook ‘Em burger — a beef patty with bacon, crispy fried onion, American cheese, pickles and Rodeo Bar’s specialty sauce. Its desserts also harken back to Lone Star classics like banana pudding, soft serve ice cream and a pie of the day. So whether you want to celebrate your Texas roots, relax while listening to live music or simply soak in the vibes of the Lone Star State, Rodeo Bar is awaiting your arrival. Sunny Side Up Toasted Yolk Cafe Brings Brunch Delights To Southlake Perfectly poached eggs, stacks of bacon strips and the fluffiest donuts you’ve ever had — you can find all of this plus a 1,000-square-foot covered patio at Southlake’s newest brunch destination, Toasted Yolk Cafe. Established in 2010, Toasted Yolk Cafe is a Texasbased brunch franchise with over 20 restaurants located throughout the Greater Houston area. With a planned rollout of eight new locations in North Texas, Toasted Yolk Cafe’s Southlake opening serves as its entryway into the Metroplex. “We saw a big opportunity to bring a hot new brunch spot to the area,” owner Ryan Patterson says. “We looked at over 70 different sites in the DFW Metroplex, and we kept coming back around to Southlake.” Guests who step into the cozy space will be enamored with the restaurant’s emerald green and golden yellow aesthetic. The full-service bar serves an extensive spread of beverages, including orange, grapefruit and pineapple mimosas, peach nectar bellinis and its own brand of Irish coffee made with Baileys, Kahlua and Frangelico. When guests are ready, they can settle into their booth or table and choose from over 50 brunch favorites on its menu. The Cowboy Scramble is one of its most popular egg specialties, covering two buttermilk biscuits with a heap of bacon, sausage, ham and sausage gravy, while the double-decker four-egg omelets are stuffed with cheddar, feta and Monterey jack cheese. And between the 12-hour smoked brisket tacos and the green chile breakfast burrito, Toasted Yolk ensures there are several ways to enjoy its egg-centric offerings. But Toasted Yolk Cafe’s biggest stars are its sweet selections. The granola apple French toast consists of three slices of sourdough bread grilled golden brown and glazed with a cinnamon-apple compote, while the strawberry-banana crepes are lightly drizzled with Nutella. For the best of both worlds, Toasted Yolk Cafe’s famous churro-style donuts are served with a dusting of cinnamon sugar and a warm caramel sauce. “We hope the community is as excited as we are about seeing something new come in,” Ryan says. “We just want to be one with the community, provide great food and great service.” Photos by Lifted Media.

With three tiered levels of exciting amenities including an indoor sauna and a premium outdoor speaker system, this pavilion brings a whole new meaning to luxury living and entertaining.

NanaWall glass doors highlight the full scope of the building, from the polished pearl finishes to the Mitsubishi steel panels. When guests are ready to make room for large crowds and gatherings, the two doors fold out of the way to create free and open space for poolside revelers to mingle. The industrial-grade powerfoil fans keep guests cool even in the hottest of temperatures, and as day turns into night, the neon-blue LEDs will keep the party vibes going.

Catering is a breeze thanks to the full-service kitchen, which includes a bar top, fridge, stove and popcorn machine. A trendy glass stairway takes gamers to the next level of entertainment boasting billiards, table soccer and hockey games and arcade machines.
A CAR COLLECTOR’S DREAM The true treasure behind this multi-leveled marvel lies on the ground floor. The descending staircase leads toward a spacious 48-foot long showcase garage, which can house up to four trophy cars at a time. Whether you’re showing off a Chevy Corvette, a Porsche or an Audi, it’s no wonder why this temperature-controlled garage is the star attraction at the pavilion.

Feelin’ Sour Olivia Rodrigo’s Upcoming Dallas Appearance Is Good For U
O
livia Rodrigo has her driver’s license and is living life in the fast lane — with no intentions of slowing down. The Disney Channel star-turned-pop princess stops in Dallas this month for her Sour Tour, with passionate “Livies” eager for the show. For someone who hasn’t even entered her 20s, Rodrigo has a stack of accomplishments a mile long and millions of fans cheering her on every step of the way. Her debut album, “Sour,” scored the most U.S. audio streams from a female debut album ever, became the most-streamed album in a week by a female artist on Spotify and made her the first female artist to chart 11 songs in the top 30 of Billboard’s Hot 100 list — with every single one of them coming from her album. “Sour” was the soundtrack of the summer, with songs like “Good 4 U,” “Deja Vu,” “Brutal” and “Happier” still stuck in our heads. But it was her record-breaking, triple-platinum single, “Drivers License,” that put her on the map last year, which not only premiered at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 but was also the most-streamed song on Spotify in 2021 with 1.1 billion global streams total. Recently winning Best New Artist, Best Pop Solo Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album from the 64th Grammy Awards, this multi-platinum singersongwriter swept in several awards shows, winning Female Artist of the Year at the iHeartRadio Music Awards, New Artist of the Year at the American Music Awards and Song of the Year at the MTV Video Music Awards. This pop rockstar is making everybody feel a little more “sour” — not that we’re complaining.

Admiring the rows of lavender can — and should — be coupled with an elegant wine tasting, savoring the estate’s varieties of reds, whites and roses. To enhance the experience for its guests, the estate hosts live music on weekends and sells a variety of lavender products in its shop like lotion and bath bombs. The vineyard even offers gift bundles — curated boxes of either its libations or lavender — for those looking to bring more than memories home with them. BeckerVineyards.com

CELEBRATING 20 YEARS As your neighbor, friend, and real estate expert
“After living in Southlake for 16 years, when the time came to sell, there was no doubt we would use Tommy Pennington. Tommy guided us through the selling process and provided great advice. He and his team were always responsive to my texts, regardless what day of the week or time it was. Having an agent that has lived in town for years with great local knowledge matters!” - Mike G
