How We Holiday No longer just an aisle of untimely decorative ideas— the holidays are officially upon us. I’m not overly worried about when the cards go out or the tree goes up—those traditions are set. This year I’m more concerned we check off the many new Texan traditions from our family’s growing holiday checklist. So much to do and so much we want to do—it takes some serious organization to get it all done. That means plan now or miss more festivities than we make. Over the last decade the Tesoriero family has made a few seasonal traditions worth a repeat performance. Of course we’ll be looking forward to the City of Southlake’s annual tree lighting ceremony. Festive window displays, elementary choirs, hot chocolate and Santa flicking the switch of the season—it keeps getting better each year. And my little girls may not know much about snow, but they do know what two million pounds of hand-carved ice looks like. For them it just isn’t Christmas without ICE! at the Gaylord Texan. This year’s Frosty The Snowman theme brings the tradition back with a nostalgic family favorite. Once again, we’ll be visiting Fort Worth’s Sundance Square and Bass Hall for a holiday performance. Gone is the threat of an errant Red Rider bee bee— today’s parents are little less Ralphie Parker and a little more Buddy the Elf. This year it’s ELF The Musical, which is as perfect a ratio of newness to tradition, as it is adult to childish humor. Shoot your eye out? Doubtful. But eating too much sugar? That’s a recipe for disaster. Speaking of recipes, my holiday-smoked turkey will make its way back to the Thanksgiving table this year. Others may call the deep-fried version juicier, but brined in citrus and smoked over cherry and apple wood, my bird has gotten rave reviews. If you have yet to try any one of these traditions, we suggest you do. A decade ago, they were all new to us. Now, these Texan traditions and many others make up the special moments of our holiday season.

GRACE APPOINTS FOUR NEW BOARD MEMBERS GRACE (Grapevine Relief And Community Exchange) has appointed four new members to the GRACE Board of Directors. GRACE is a social service agency that provides assistance to individuals and families in crisis. Traci Bernard, RN, serves as President at Texas Health Southlake and has more than 20 years of clinical and managerial experience, along with a background in hospital operations, finance and quality management. Larry Darlage, Ph.D., recently retired from his presidency at Tarrant County College’s Northeast Campus, and has just become Principal of Crown of Life Lutheran School in Colleyville. John Fletcher, CEO of Fletcher Consulting, brings 36 years of marketing and public relations expertise to GRACE. Finally, Southlake Mayor John Terrell, now in his sixth term, has 30 years of experience in real estate and economic development. He currently serves as the vice president of Commercial Development at DFW International Airport.

YOUTH AMBASSADORS TRAVEL TO SOUTHLAKE SISTER CITIES IN 2015 Each year Southlake youth have the opportunity to represent the city as a Youth Ambassador to one of Southlake’s Sister Cities - Tome, Japan and Suzhou Wuzhong, China. As part of the Southlake Sister Cities Youth Ambassador Program, the Youth Ambassadors are immersed in a cultural experience while living with host families and experiencing a variety of activities planned by the city and their hosts. Serving as a Southlake Sister Cities Youth Ambassador provides the opportunity for friendship and a life-changing experience while fulfilling and underscoring the mission of the Sister Cities International program of “bringing the world together through education and cultural exchange.” NATIONAL COLLEGE ENROLLMENT DECLINES, CSHS NOT AFFECTED Recently released U.S. Census Bureau data suggests a decline in the nation’s college enrollment for the second year in a row. Similar data from the Census Bureau in the past few years has also indicated that the average national high school graduation rate is a little more than 80 percent. In the same study, it was determined that a large part of the decline took place in two-year college enrollment. These community, or junior, colleges experienced a 10 percent decline in enrollment from 2012 to 2013, while enrollment at four-year colleges grew slightly (1 percent). Carroll Senior High School in Southlake boasts a 99 percent graduation rate, and 98.5 percent of CSHS seniors are collegebound. Southlake was recently recognized by Newsweek as one of the top ranking schools in the United States —coming in at No. 80 —on a list that included more than 750 high schools in the nation. Factors such as graduation rates and standardized test scores were taken into consideration when determining rank.

NORTH TEXAS GIVING DAY EXCEEDS RECORD The 6th Annual North Texas Giving Day was a huge success in September, exceeding it’s own record set in 2013 by $1 million. In 18 hours more than $26.3 million was raised through communitywide events and nonprofit performances. More than 1,580 nonprofits benefitted from more than 98,000 donations. Locally, GRACE had 87 donations totaling $21,553, and Metroport Meals on Wheels had 72 donations totaling $11,340. From 6 a.m. to midnight Sept. 18, donations poured in from all 50 states, six territories and more than 28 countries. Costumeclad nonprofit representatives were spotted across the community drumming up grassroots support for their causes. Donors of all ages participated in the festivities, including kids who gave their time and loose change at the inaugural Kids Give event.

TEXAS TURNAROUND BRIDGE ON SH 114 IS NOW OPEN The “Texas Turnaround” bridge at Carroll Avenue and State Highway 114 is officially open. The new turnaround bridge will greatly reduce traffic congestion especially during peak hours. It will also improve traffic safety by creating a separate turn lane for drivers, who will notice improved traffic flow and less congestion with the addition of the “Texas Turnaround.” Gateway Church attendees will find their commute to be much quicker and safer turning into and off of Blessed Way. The “Texas Turnaround” project has been a joint effort with several partners. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), Tarrant County, Gateway Church, Cooper and Stebbins (Southlake Town Square Development), and the City of Southlake. “This has been an exceptional partnership,” said Public Works Director Bob Price. He added, “The real beneficiaries are the City’s citizens and visitors who will find the flow of traffic moving much smoother because of the new ‘Texas Turnaround.’”

DRAGON NAMED TOP MALE SENIOR SWIMMER FOR 2014 Former Dragon swimmer Jonathan Roberts has been named National High School Coaches Association Senior Swimmer of the Year for his efforts last spring. Roberts, who now attends The University of Texas, became a back-to-back 500 freestyle Texas state champion with a dominant state record finish, winning by 10 seconds. He posted a time of 4:16.90. Roberts added more gold with a state title in the 100 backstroke in a time of 48.65. He was also part of Carroll’s gold medal 200 medley relay team with a time of 1:34.93. Roberts is a member of the Junior National Team and swam at the Junior World Championships where he placed 12th in the 400 freestyle, 13th in the 800 freestyle and 10th in the 1500 freestyle. Roberts is the second boys’ swimmer from Texas that has been honored by the NHSCA.

community PAMPLING CHARITY GOLF CLASSIC RAISES OVER $140,000 FOR CYSTIC FIBROSIS Old American Golf Club and other local PGA TOUR and Web.com Tour professionals gathered Sept. 29 at The Rod Pampling Charity Classic raising more than $140,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Now in its 12th year, the Rod Pampling Charity Classic has generated more than $1 million for the nonprofit. A pre-tournament cocktail reception and live auction took place Sept. 28 at the Cactus Glass at the Gaylord Texan Hotel with local television personality John Rhadigan as emcee. Items up for bid included a dove hunt for 10 with Pampling, a golf getaway for four to The Players Club at TPC Sawgrass, and a “ski with an Olympian” package. An auction to play with a TOUR pro in the tournament alone raised $34,000. Former British Open champions, and North Texas residents, Justin Leonard (Dallas) and Todd Hamilton (Westlake), 2014 Valspar Championship winner John Senden, 2014 Valero Texas Open champion Steven Bowditch and other pros, including Chad Campbell (Colleyville), all played golf and took part in the events.

REC CENTER GROUNDBREAKING BRINGS TOGETHER SOUTHLAKE COMMUNITY Members of the community and Southlake City Council gathered around the future location of the community rec center on Sept. 27. The center will be located at the southwest corner of Bicentennial Park Mayor John Terrell presided over the ceremonial groundbreaking, which included presentations from City Council members and city administration, and recognition of the many volunteers who helped bring the project to fruition An outline of the 105,000 square-foot multipurpose building was painted to give visitors a true to life representation of the size of the complex. Informational kiosks complete with 3D renderings were placed throughout the facilityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s footprint and designated the approximate locations of each of the highlighted areas of the recreation center.

Q: What are the common pitfalls you see with choosing the right procedure?

Last month Dr. Michael Vennemeyer, board certified Southlake plastic surgeon and author of the book “Plastic Surgery Myths Dispelled: A Consumer’s Guide,” shared some of the latest research supporting that plastic surgery may positively affect how you feel. Married to a psychiatrist, he is especially focused on helping patients find happiness. But, can everyone get mood-boosting, self-esteem-enhancing results? This month he reveals the three things you must have to get the maximum positive impact from plastic surgery. Q: What is the first essential to success with plastic surgery? A: First, your goals have to be something that plastic surgery can achieve. A common and reasonable goal is when you have extra tummy skin after pregnancy, and a flatter abdomen will help you feel comfortable in a bikini again. Another example is when you feel like the bags under your eyes make you look tired, and you want to look refreshed. Most of the patients that walk into my office fit into this category. Q: What are some examples of wrong reasons to seek plastic surgery? A: If you are getting a procedure only to make someone else happy or because you think looking better may save a relationship, you should think twice. People that get plastic surgery solely for these reasons have a much lower chance of being happy at end of the day. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great when your significant other is supportive, and research does show that feeling better about yourself can improve your relationships. The key is doing it for yourself, first.

A: Many people simply want the least invasive approach —this does not always get you the result you want. I have seen a lot of patients go for non-invasive fat melting or skin tightening procedures, only to end up disappointed after a series of treatments with minimal to no change. Subpar results leave you unsatisfied and feeling like you wasted your money. In most cases, liposuction or tummy tuck results blow away what you can get from the non-invasive technologies that exist these days. Cost is another factor that often leads people to choose the wrong procedure or surgeon. The cheapest is not usually the best. Instead, focus on the results you want. Choose a plastic surgeon and procedure likely to get that result for you. At the end of the day, the series of cheaper-up-front treatments or an unqualified provider can end up costing you a lot more. Q: What is the third essential to a good plastic surgery outcome? A: The third essential is being a good candidate. This means being healthy and having enough time set aside to recover properly. It is very important to be honest with your plastic surgeon about any health issues, medications or smoking history. Also, take the recommended time to recover and heal properly to avoid compromising your results. Healing uneventfully has a tremendous impact on your result and overall happiness. Ever wonder what a plastic surgeon sees when they look around the room? Attractiveness is only subjective to a point. Next month’s article will help you understand the science of looking hot and learn tips that can help you look your best without surgery.

There are a lot of new lasers and machines out there today, many of which over promise and under deliver. It can be really confusing to prospective patients. BETTER FASTER URGENT CARE Extended Services and Affordable Care

lan Dennington, a board certified emergency physician, and his wife Kristina, also an emergency room physician, founded Better Faster Urgent Care in Southlake in 2013. The Denningtons, who have been Southlake residents for five years, saw a need for an urgent care facility in the area. “Southlake is a great community, and the people that live here care about their healthcare,” Dr. Dennington said. “They are knowledgeable and involved, and as a physician, you appreciate when people participate in their own care.” Dr. Dennington developed Better Faster Urgent Care to be a next generation urgent care provider, or what he terms Urgent Care Plus. “We felt there was a need for affordable care for urgent problems that was local and easy to access, yet comprehensive in its abilities,” Dr. Dennington said. “There are many stand-alone emergency rooms popping up that look like urgent cares, but charge at emergency room prices. “We take care of a wide variety of problems and complex injuries, but at an urgent care designation, which saves the patient money. Overall, we don’t have to send people to the ER often like other urgent care centers do, because we are staffed and equipped to handle most problems, yet we don’t charge as an emergency room.” Better Faster has all of the capabilities of other urgent care centers, but offer an extended array of services including extended laboratory, IV fluids, IV antibiotics, and mild sedation for procedures that aren’t offered at other area urgent care clinics. They are equipped with x-ray capabilities, like many urgent care centers, however they also have an extended laboratory and procedural capabilities. The extended laboratory services allow for the evaluation of a much broader range of complaints including abdominal pain and low-risk chest pain. Additionally, Better Faster offers a variety of mild sedation options for procedures to ease fear of needles, improve patient comfort, and make for a better experience for patients requiring otherwise painful procedures. Not only is the facility state of the art, but the providers are topnotch as well. Emergency medicine involves a broad training in all aspects of medicine including orthopedics, pediatrics, intensive care, internal medicine, surgery and gynecology with a special emphasis on taking care of patients with acute injury and illness. “Although we are an urgent care center,” Dr. Dennington said, “the staff here are the same type of people you would see if you had to go to an emergency room. n a balmy evening in June, Joe King sauntered into the Hilton in Town Square. Joe knew he was nominated for a Southlake Chamber of Commerce award, but “I didn’t know what I was up for when I walked into the ballroom,” he recalls. A handful of awards were handed out that evening, then came the Citizen of the Year Award — the only category in which nominees were named. Their photos flashed across the screen: The mayor. The former mayor. A city council member. The beloved chair of the GRACE Gala. And then there was Joe. “I’m going, ‘Wow,’” Joe says. “I have such respect for these people.” Joe sat there, with his wife, Sandy, by his side, just grateful to be a part of the club. Then the emcee announced the winner. “When they called my name, I was the last one at the table to realize it was me,” he says. As the crowd jumped to its feet and erupted in a sea of applause, Joe recalls, “All I heard were the words ‘Kids Matter.’” As genuinely “shocked and surprised” as Joe was that evening, no one who knew him — and they all knew him. As president and CEO of Kids Matter International (KMI), a nonprofit designed to “bring hope and healing to orphaned, abandoned or disadvantaged children,” Joe’s focus has always been on others. Growing up as an only child in Providence, Rhode Island, Joe had trouble in school. “I was not one of the smartest kids in class,” he recalls. “Through a bunch of circumstances, I ended up joining the Boy Scouts. It really, in so many ways, ended up changing my life. It gave me a lot more self respect. It also showed me how great things are when you do things for others.” After “flunking out” of Providence College, Joe joined the Army. “I came back and realized what I really wanted to do was to help children.” After earning a degree in nonprofit management from a little school in West Virginia, Joe returned to the Boy Scouts in Atlanta, this time as an Exploring Director. “I moved all over the country with them.” SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

In the years that followed, there was a regional director position for the international student exchange, Youth for Understanding, plus an impressive seven-year stretch as the director of fundraising for the U.S. Olympic Committee and two years as national director of development with United Cerebral Palsy in New York City. During that time, a headhunter called and convinced Joe to relocate to a nondescript building at the intersection of Precinct Line and 183 in Hurst. There, in the late ’80s, a fledgling organization called Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) was taking the country by storm. After a two-year stint, Joe left to start his own company, The Narragansett Group, which consults with national and international nonprofits and represents them in Washington, D.C. Fast forward to 2006, friends convinced Joe to go down to Guatemala to visit a Christian orphanage. The group of six or seven really wanted to help financially, and they looked to their resident expert for guidance. He recommended starting a 501(c)3 in the United States (a decision anyone familiar with Third World logistics would understand), which eventually became KMI. Joe asked a man who would later become his best friend, Coye Conner, if he would be chairman, and Joe was tasked with a volunteer assignment to “put the organization together and run it.” Years later, the board came back to him and asked if The Narrangansett Group would take on the organization as a client. “The rest is history,” Joe says. Continuing their work overseas, KMI supports an orphanage in India with 21 children in need due to a variety of circumstances, including natural disaster and political upheaval. In Honduras, a refuge for 11 girls being trafficked and abused is leading the way in the protection of children. “It was the first home of its kind in Honduras. It actually led — for the first time — to the arrest and prosecution of people that abused children sexually in Honduras.” But as the group evolved, they came to a realization. “We wanted to do things domestically, we wanted to do things at home,” Joe says. “Now, 90 percent of what we do is in the North Texas area. We do quite a bit throughout the country, but we do most of our work right here.” And the work seems to find them. One evening, a board member attended a Clothe A Child event at the Kohl’s in Irving. “That particular night, they had to send 50 children away because they didn’t have the funds to take them shopping,” Joe says. Coincidentally, the next evening was KMI’s annual gala. “We contained the board of directors that night and appropriated $5,000 so that each of those children could go shopping the very next week,” Joe recalls. That was the seed that planted Around the Block. Held each November, the program invites underprivileged schoolage children and their families to Kohl’s in Southlake (and Southwest Fort Worth), hands them $100 to spend and pairs them with one of hundreds of volunteer personal shoppers. They shop the department store at deep discounts, choosing their very own brand-new clothes, some for the very first time. “Most of these people have never been in a department store, believe it or not,” Joe says. “And they’re from our area.” Last year, 1,201 children walked away with newfound confiNOV 14 • 31

dence. “We get letters, phone calls, emails from teachers saying, ‘I have never seen Johnny so happy.’” Joe says. “It’s because he comes to school the next morning wearing a brand-new shirt and brandnew jeans.” Over the years, other organizations have joined in, Boston’s Gourmet Pizza, plus the Ryan Palmer Foundation and Buckner International, which donate backpacks and shoes, respectively. The Barbara Bush Family Literacy Foundation provides books for each child. Along with the big stuff, come the little things. Remember hearing about the Cub Scouts in North Richland Hills whose trailer was stolen? Three days later it was quietly replaced. “We do that kind of thing all the time,” Joe says, humbly. During the summer, they work with area churches to feed children who are on free or reduced-price lunches during the school year. “Whenever resources are needed to take a child out of crisis, that’s our goal, that’s our mission and that’s our vision,” Joe says. Today, the orphanage in Guatemala where it all began is totally self-sufficient. “It is now a private school, an orphanage and a library,” Joe says. Because the orphanage allows children from outside to attend the school, the tuition makes it all possible. But when self-sufficiency isn’t possible, how do they do it? There’s the Oktoberfest raffle plus a long list of impressive corporate partners who sponsor, underwrite or outright contribute to their programs. And then there’s the Charity Ball, which, just a few short years ago, took place under a tent in the Carrabba’s parking lot. Things have changed over the years. “We fill the ballroom of the Southlake Hilton. We have raised as much as $800,000.” In one night. Whether it’s time, talent or treasure that’s needed, it’s always there. “I’ve been very fortunate and blessed, that’s a fact,” Joe says. “Here in the Southlake area, I’ve got to tell you, what I do comes very easy. It’s because of the generosity of the people in the community — and the businesses in the community — it really is.”

Home is where the heart should be this season. Being with family and gathering around the dining room table or fireplace hearth is where everyone belongs. Not running here or there to get a last minute ingredient or present for your second cousin twice removed who happened to show up this year. Adding too much to your plate —the figurative one —during the holidays has really become the new normal. The season by nature is full of hustle and bustle, and it is easy to find yourself in the midst of holiday commotion! Combat this commotion through preparation and forethought. It’s the simplest way to have a hassle-free home for the holidays. In order to accomplish at least one or two things on your to-do list and at the same time not feel naughty for cutting corners, preparation is key. We’ve spoken to experts who specialize in organization, décor and stress —which can all be related during the holidays! They’ve got great advice sure to get you in good spirits for the season.

“Part of planning is of course creating many detailed lists,” Oswald said. “I recommend making a list of everything you want to make two weeks before the big meal. Then make a list of which platters and serving utensils you will use for each dish and what quantities of ingredients you will need to buy. And last, but most important, make a detailed timeline for the meal prep and cooking.” If lists aren’t your cup of hot tea, perhaps organize your pantry and refrigerator in a way that with just a quick glance you know what you have and what you are lacking. Either way, organization is key for seamless meal preparation.

Hassle Free Menu Planning Nothing feels worse than getting ready to bake grandma’s favorite cookies and realizing there is no butter or flour. Katie Oswald of the NEAT Method advises that planning in advance is key. “This is the one area and time of year I encourage clients to have extras on hand. Between baking and meal prep, common ingredients (i.e. butter, flour, oil) tend to get used more quickly during the holidays than other times of the year. Having plenty of basic ingredients on hand will ensure no one has to run to the grocery store during holiday traffic and chaos.” And if ever there was a time to make a menu and grocery list for the upcoming weeks, it is during the holidays! With all that is going on during the holidays – planning for guests to arrive, decorating your home and buying presents – it is essential to stay on top of things. One way to do this is with as many lists as possible.

If your cookbooks have a thin layer of dust on them, there are simple ways to make store bought look and taste like you spent all day preparing them. First of all, if you picked up a few side dishes from a restaurant, be sure to transfer them to your own serving platters. Emotions during the holiday season can run the gamete, from happy and joyful to worried and frustrated. Stress can affect family life —not only can stress affect adults, but kids also. Children can sense the level of stress their parents are shouldering. “Our children model what we do more often than what we say,” Southlake Marriage and family therapist Maryellen Dabal said. “Communicating with our family about what is important and what the priorities are can help make for better guidelines and boundaries during the holiday season. Discussing expectations of family members ahead of time can reduce stress and allow each person to prepare for what they need to do during the upcoming holidays.”

According to Professional Organizer and founder of NEAT Method Katie Oswald, creating a comfortable environment for holiday guests is essential. “Fresh flowers,

Oswald suggests having extra phone chargers on hand in the guest room, and staging the guest bathroom as well. “Like the bedroom, the guest bathroom should contain essential items that will either help guests feel at home or substitute for any they may have forgotten. I like to keep travel-sized toothpastes, shampoos, and soaps in a large glass jar or other visible container for guests to easily access during their stay.” Above all, guests should feel at home. They could have chosen to stay at a hotel, but since you have opened your doors to them, make sure it is a pleasant experience. Living out of a suitcase for a week is not a fun way to spend the holiday vacation. “Designating a space for guests to store their belongings, even if it is small, will help them feel settled and at home during their stay,” Oswald said. “Place a few extra hangers in the guest closet as well as a mini clothing steamer, or iron and ironing board, especially for those who are staying a few days.”

What is the one thing that should be on your decorating radar for the season? “Try not to be tempted to buy ALL new decorations each year,” said Rhonda Boisvert of The Interior Collection in Southlake. “For something ‘new,’ it is best to change out one color or add to existing.” If your choices last year included traditional featuring shiny red ornaments for your holiday tree and dark green holly for the mantle, add another color this year —or even a texture. Burlap or wooden objects will give your holiday look a rustic, natural feel, such as the Natural Noel look from Pier 1. If, on the other hand, gold and silver were your go-to colors, try switching the silver for bronze. As Boisvert said, it can change your whole look in an instant! If you are in a bind for time, because perhaps your extended family is showing up next weekend, Boisvert has another tip for you. “If you have to spruce up or decorate in a week’s time, be organized! Attack one room at a time, or decorate all your Christmas trees before moving to the décor.” The most important thing to remember when creating the perfect holiday look is to have fun! Involve the whole family; perhaps give the kids the task of decorating the family tree. Boisvert’s best advice is to “Eat, drink and be merry while you work!”

Thanksgiving and Christmas décor has been on the shelves of department stores and boutiques since August, and television and radio commercials have been challenging you to get a head start on holiday preparation since September. However, this time of year is really when it starts to hit home that the holidays are right around the corner. Thanksgiving is only weeks away, and Christmas is right on its heels. How do you deal with holiday overload when it comes to picking and choosing the right decorations for your home? It may seem like a hassle to sift through the cheesy to find

Coping with Holiday Stress Everyone can attest to the fact that the holidays are a stressful time of year. There seems to be much to do, and we often times don’t allow ourselves much time to prioritize or accomplish our to-do list. In fact, according to Maryellen Dabal, MA, LMFT, in Southlake, this falls under the category of top three stressors. “In my opinion, the top three holiday stressors are financial worries about having enough money to cover holiday expenses, being able to prioritize people and events during this time, and anxiety associated with being with family or friends,” Maryellen said. However, on a positive note, these stressors don’t have to bring you down. For example, looking at prioritization —it all boils down to making it simpler for you. “In order to prioritize what is important during the holidays, take time when you are calm and not overstressed to think about what you want to do during the holiday,” Maryellen said. “Decide who is important that you be with.” Simplify the holidays so you can enjoy them,” Maryellen said. “Delegate responsibilities to others where possible and eliminate those tasks that are not necessary. Allow the kids to help wrap gifts for others. You decide if you have to send out 150 holiday cards that are hand signed with special notes written in each. If this is what is important to you, then absolutely make time for it. Be sure to plan time for the things that are most important to you now.”

One of the most common questions I hear from clients with young children this time of year is how to prepare for the surplus of new toys. An easy way to make room for the new gifts, and to teach kids a valuable lesson in serving others, is to have each child pick out 5-10 toys that he or she believes another child would like to receive, including toys they have outgrown. Set a date to bring kids to donate their old toys to a local charity. It’s a great service activity for kids, and a reminder of what the season is truly all about.

Time Required: About One Hour Difficulty Level: Intermediate Items needed: Wooden spools, various colors of yarn, glue gun and glue sticks, black cardstock, gold leafing pen, artistic wire in brass 20 gauge, scissors, wire cutters, adhesive tape and white felt. All materials can be found at Michaels©. PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS Step 1: Wrap each spool with a different color of yarn. Tie off to finish. Use adhesive tape to hold yarn in place. Step 2: Create the wire holder by wrapping the end of the wire around a pencil twice, leaving a 3” tail. Cut wire. There should now be a ring on one end that will hold the card. Step 3: Wrap a small piece of felt a half inch tall around the straight end of the wire. The felt should be thick enough so that it will stick down in the spool and the wire will not move. Step 4: Use hot glue to attach the felt wrapped wire to the inside of the spool. Let the glue dry. Step 5: Cut a small rectangle out of the black cardstock and write names on the card with a Gold Leafing paint pen. Place card into the rings.

Planting the Seed Community Advocate Lisa Rose brings hope and healing. by Amy Reisner

he rendering for The Gatehouse Community is displayed proudly at projectHandUp headquarters —a quaint house on property known as The Stonehouse. With creaky hardwood floors and a few small offices, this is where Founder and Board President Lisa Rose, a community advocate for women, has turned her passion for women’s ministry into a reality. From events such as First Fridays to the formation of the nonprofit projectHandUp, Lisa’s path to The Gatehouse, a refuge for women in crisis, has been a leap of faith every step of the way. For the past 20 years, women’s ministry has been Lisa’s passion —even prior to when she decided to leave the world of corporate marketing. Before plans for The Gatehouse were even a twinkle in her eye, Lisa was planting seeds in the community. “For about a year [in 2007] I had it on my heart to take women’s ministry to the community,” Lisa said. “I didn’t know what that meant, but felt called to have a speaker at Harkins Theater in Southlake once per month.” She and her team of 12 other ladies who shared her passion for women’s ministry organized a free event for women in the community to gather and hear a message of hope unique to their gender. These gatherings became known as First Fridays, taking place on the first Friday of each month. Motivational speakers, who are women from all walks of life, give practical and spiritual advice, with topics ranging in scope from marriage and parenting to depression and forgiveness. It is “Real Women. Real Talk. Real Life.” The monthly event is still going strong seven years later. The 2014-2015 season started out with more than 500 women attending the kickoff event in September which featured speaker Valorie Burton. On Nov. 7, stay at home mom of five Kay Wyma will address “Taming Entitlement in Kids and in Ourselves.” But when these speaking engagements began, they were only part of a much larger picture that was yet to be seen. “We knew that First Fridays were not the end,” Lisa said, “but we didn’t know what that meant. They were about feeding people spiritually and emotionally. But not physically — that was the piece that was missing. We knew we should be doing more.”

After years of success, the First Friday experience transformed into the nonprofit projectHandUp. This organization would give Lisa more avenues to follow in her mission to help women. “Each person’s path in life is different, each journey unique,” Lisa said. “We can all be thrown off by life’s challenges and become sidetracked. But sometimes the challenges are simply too devastating to navigate alone, and we need a hand up.” Although The Gatehouse evolved from projectHandUp, Lisa is quick to point out that it was not her vision alone. A mutual friend put Lisa and now Gatehouse CoFounder and Executive Director Deborah Lyons in touch, and come to find out, Deborah had similar visions of a supportive community for area women in crisis. Prior to working with Lisa, Deborah had designed and managed a transitional housing program in Texas for homeless women and children for more than 10 years. She had left this position and was making plans for her version of The Gatehouse. “But on a much smaller scale,” Deborah said. “[The Gatehouse] is my original plan, only bigger!” As Lisa tells the story, both she and Deborah were slow to connect. However, Deborah made the first move and they met for dinner in 2011. Lisa, as she tells it, decided to back Deborah’s proposal “without hesitation.” Lisa invited Deborah to join projectHandUp, and this

would start their journey toward what would be The Gatehouse. Neither women knew how this would come to be, but together they wanted to make it a reality. Originally, the plan was to purchase seven acres along 360 in Grapevine, but that’s not the way it actually happened. Right before closing, Lisa got the feeling they needed more land, especially to fit all of the facilities the master plan included. Land was needed for counseling centers, a general store, playgrounds, a childcare center, a chapel and more. The size and scope of Lisa and Deborah’s plans needed room —room that the original seven acres could not support. They stumbled along a much larger tract of acreage, also along 360, that was a staggering 61 acres. This was more than enough to house the 96 women and 135 children expected to fill the four apartment complexes of The Gatehouse and then some. Lisa explained The Gatehouse offers women ample time to carry out their hope and desire to change their circumstances. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, one in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. Too many times women in crisis from this, underemployment, a devastating divorce, incarceration or poverty, have short-term shelters to turn to in these situations. Lisa and Deborah’s plan includes not only a specialized program for each woman, but allows for an extended stay of up to two years or longer depending on each woman’s specific circumstances. strictions on length of stays. What’s unique about the Gatehouse Community is that they provide long-term solutions. It offers safe housing, childcare and reliable transportation. “You have to meet [women] where they are,” Deborah said. “If they are hungry they won’t care about anything else. We’ve knocked down that barrier that prevents women from listening by providing their basic needs.” In addition to fulfilling basic needs, practical resources that include classes and counseling are also part of their stay. The Gatehouse uses a faithbased program, which is an additional reason they are not government funded. Women are expected to follow an individualized program for permanent change, whether that is securing and holding down a job, or going back to school. “It involves hard work and a willingness to make the necessary changes in your life,” Deborah said. “Their only job is to walk that path, doing their program and setting their own goals. But we are here to help and know this will be a great resource for these women.” But no matter how noble, this project does come at a cost. However, each part of the plan Lisa and Deborah have had for The Gatehouse was and is immediately followed by a donor or volunteer asking how they can help. “You show up and work the plan and see who God brings,” Lisa said. “When you are in the right place and take the next step and don’t get in a hurry, God brings people at just the right time.”

Senior Living: .Discovering your options There are plenty of factors to consider when choosing how to spend your golden years. From independent and assisted living to memory care and skilled nursing, this is one of the most important choices you will ever make â&#x20AC;&#x201D;it affects your quality of life for the rest of your life. In addition, for those individuals deciding what type of care their parents need to receive moving forward, the choice can be just as daunting. Take the time to consider what plans for senior living will work best for you, and your loved ones. Independent Living. This type of housing describes retirement living for individuals 55 or older. It is often set up just like a neighborhood or condominium the senior lives in currently, but with added benefits such as lawn care, trash pickup and organized gatherings for community members. There is often an HOA fee of sorts associated with the community. Moving to an independent living community is typically the first step in changing your living arrangements due to retirement and age. Assisted Living. These are licensed facilities, usually, that provide meals and 24-hour general monitoring seven days per week. Accommodations are often arranged in an apartment type setting, which allows residents to receive home health care at the facility. However, when there is nursing staff on location, they can assist with medication administration. With that being said, an individual living at an assisted living facility usually must be in stable health condition, or relay on nursing care very little. Skilled Nursing Care or Memory Care. When an older adult is in poor health or living with Alzheimerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, a more hands-on facility is required. When someone is referred to, or told that they need around the clock nursing care, a skilled nursing care facility is often the best option.

ave you ever considered Thanksgiving in Turkey or Santa Claus at sea? As multi-generational travel becomes more popular, families are considering celebrating the holidays on a cruise. Travel professionals have seen that family cruises are on the rise, and have been for a number of years. “With cruise lines providing activities and events for all ages, traveling with extended family has become more and more popular over the years,” said Cruise Holidays Owner Mike Currie. “Especially in Texas with four of the major cruise lines embarking from the Gulf.”

How to plan As excited as you might be to cruise your way into the season, there are important things to note, which are applicable any time of year. When planning a cruise it is best to consult a travel professional. Someone who knows the industry can help pick the line and ship that is right for you. Family cruises, in particular, require advance planning on a larger scale, Currie said. Typically, it is necessary for one family

member to take the lead and visit the travel professional to serve as representative for the family. The agency can then help plan an itinerary for each of the family members and for the family as a hole. For example, they will help you choose a destination fit for the whole clan — looking at factors such as how much time at sea they want to spend. When considering the cost of any cruise, remember shore excursions and onboard spending for various services and activities. Find out what’s included and what’s not to avoid surprises. It is also important consider the length of your voyage. If you

Most families aren’t looking to trade the cold weather at home for cold weather elsewhere. As exciting as you try to make the idea of staying on a ship for a week, the best way to sell the holiday gathering on the open water to your family is through on-board activities. Let’s start with the youngest of cruisers. Most ships made for families have childcare services.

What to pack Packing for your trip can seem ambiguous at times. Traveling to a destination with warm temperatures may make for obvious luggage contents. However, what if your cruise ship includes an ice skating rink? Then you’ll need long pants and shorts for the trip. According to Royal Caribbean, there are standard packing guidelines each vacationer should follow for an enjoyable time at sea and port. You’ll want a basic bag you carry at embarkation that has a few personal items to get you through the first day and night of your trip. This might include necessities you wouldn’t want to be waiting on your luggage to have. In order to pack properly for the rest of your adventure, you must know what both daytime and nighttime weather will be like. Warm days and cool nights? Pack a sweater or light jacket. Cold days? Pack some gloves. Taking a Caribbean vacation with an onboard water oasis? Pack two swimsuits! Although veteran cruisers may choose to skip the formal dinners, first time cruisers want to be sure and have the proper attire for these dinners. Hillstone Restaurant Group, although based in Los Angeles, has Texas roots —the founder and CEO is from Houston —and operates 13 different restaurant concepts nationwide. My focus this month is on their flagship restaurant concept, Hillstone, located in Preston Center Plaza. Sister restaurant R+D Kitchen (Southlake Style June 2014) is only a stones throw away from Hillstone, which faces Preston Road as part of an upscale shopping center in North Dallas. Even on a weeknight, we were glad to have a reservation. Since the restaurant was bustling with diners the wait would have been nearly an hour. Hillstone exemplifies the company ethos of beautiful, elegant dining environments. The dining area décor is comprised of warm woods utilized in both seating and on the walls. Each seating location is highlighted with spot-lighting which creates intimacy and a sense of privacy.

As with most Hillstone Group restaurants the menu is simple and makes no attempt to offer page after page of dishes. Rather it focuses on fresh ingredients and made-from-scratch dishes beautifully presented to the diner. Because of this simplicity, there are six sections from which to plan your meal: Starters, Burgers & Sandwiches, Salads, Entrées, Vegetables & Sides and Desserts & Coffee. The highlight of the Starter menu is the grilled artichokes served with a fresh side of rémoulade. If you haven’t taken the plunge and sampled a wellprepared artichoke, this would be a great way to start the adventure. It has limited availability, but definitely ask for it. From the Burger & Sandwiches menu we ordered the Hickory burger. Fresh ground beef grilled to order —they can do medium —topped with finely diced red onions, shredded cheddar

cheese, Canadian bacon and a tangy hickory sauce, makes this an amazing dish. Yes, I did write Canadian bacon on top of a burger. Trust me; it adds a nice twist. Our server also shared that the house-made veggie burger, again made fresh daily in the kitchen, would delight even the most dedicated diners on either side of the vegetarian table. We will save that for our next visit. The most popular and well-known dish on the Salad menu is the grilled chicken salad. However, our server suggested the Thai Steak & Noodle salad, which was an excellent choice. The steak was tender and laid upon a bed of rice noodles, greens and mango slices, tossed in an amazing Thai dressing. It was definitely more noodle than greens, but who would complain about that? From the Entrées menu —if they are available —order the jumbo lump crab cakes served with a flavorful mustard sauce. If seafood isn’t what you go for, any of their steaks are a sure winner with the star attraction being the Hawaiian rib-eye marinated then grilled over hardwood. Hillstone is a great destination for a date night or an evening out with friends. Remember to make a reservation so that you aren’t left waiting for a table at this consistently stellar dining destination.

Uncommon Turkey Copeland’s fries it’s finest Frying your own turkey is a tricky undertaking. You may not know where to start and might end up in culinary confusion. Worst yet, being unprepared and underequipped could land you in hot water and cooking oil. According to the National Fire Protection Association, turkey fryers cause around 60 accidents per year. If you are still up for the challenge, here are a few tips; never leave your deep fryer unattended, don’t overfill the oil in the fryer, and deep-fry your turkey on a flat surface away from homes, garages and wooden decks. However, if you aren’t up for the challenge, leave the frying to the experts. Turn to Copeland’s of New Orleans in Southlake Town Square for help. For the past 10 years, Copeland’s has been providing a full holiday spread to guests looking for something a bit different. Make a Cajun fried turkey part of your Thanksgiving or Christmas meal tradition and spice things up a bit for guests sitting around your holiday table. The flavorful —and large —turkeys weigh in between 12 and 14 pounds. That’s enough to feed the whole family on the big day with plenty left over for those amazing turkey sandwiches the next. But make sure you contact Copeland’s to reserve your turkey sooner than later. They expect to fry up more than 300 Cajun turkeys between the months of October and January. With this many gobblers on order, they need at least a three-day notice. Cajun fried turkeys also can be ordered all year long with a 72-hour lead-time for the non-holiday season. Time for the extras? No need to stand over a hot stove preparing sides for your turkey —although your motherin-law’s broccoli, rice and cheese casserole may be your family’s current favorite. Copeland’s offers a variety of side items to complement their Cajun Fried turkey. Order pints of our favorite mashed sweet potatoes with a pecan amaretto cream sauce or Louisiana oyster dressing – the two most popular sides. However, for good measure be sure to add cornbread dressing, cranberry sauce, garden fresh green bean casserole, corn Macque Choux, turkey gravy, and hot biscuits by the dozen.

Cool Beans A roast above the rest Tis’ the season of things pumpkin spiced, and there is nothing more enticing than a gourd with your grind. Although coffee enthusiasts may be accustomed to syrup flavoring their espresso drink, Buon Giorno will have you coming back for more with their homemade blend of pumpkin and spices. Combine their version of the signature fall recipe with micro-batch roasted beans, and you have a brew that stands above the rest. Espresso and coffee are only as good as the bean from which they come. After searching all over for an espresso reminiscent of what he experienced in Italy at the age of 18, Buon Giorno Owner David Clarke began learning the practice of and roasting his own beans. After five years of using his friends as guinea pigs, it was time to introduce their find to the masses. David and his wife Leyna opened Buon Giorno in Grapevine in 2006. Differentiating himself from the chains, as David refers to them, is a task he doesn’t take lightly. Microbatch roasting allows him to get just the right flavor. It also makes each roast more unique, and considering the fact that David knows the story behind each of the beans’ farmers and crops, it is safe to say he has a vested interest in each shot (of espresso) and brew (of coffee). Personal relationships, such as the ones he has with the farmers, is an important step of the process. To David, the whole business of coffee is about building relationships. This can be seen in the baristas’ positive and warm attitudes, which waif through the coffee house and reaches patrons much like the aroma of the coffee. You feel at home entering Buon Giorno —with its comfy couches and oversized chairs. It is obvious that whatever David is doing keeps patrons coming back for more. From college students to moms and toddlers, there is a place for everyone in his coffee house, and a drink to fit their mood or day. It is rumored that Southlake residents will soon be able to find Buon Giorno espresso and coffee on the shelves of Central Market. The grocery chain is well known for using locally sourced products.
