I’m not sure how I came to own my copy of “Life’s Little Instruction Book,” H. Jackson Brown’s bestseller from the early ’90s. But I can tell you that even after multiple relocations, two iPads and a kindle, this dog-eared paperback still holds a prominent position in my house. This month’s issue has me thinking of one of Brown’s 511 tips to his son on how to live a happy and rewarding life. “Remember that the happiest people are not those getting more, but those giving more.” The practice of gratitude is having a resurgence of late. It may be just me, but gratitude may very well be the word of 2019 — literally worn on sleeves, posted online with #gratitude and cataloged in daily journals. And rightfully so as we all should make time to give thanks for what we have. It has been proven gratitude has the power to make us happier. But true joy comes from what we do, not what we have. From the Grapevine VFW to Southlake Diwail and CISD’s annual Compassion Cup, this month’s issue is full of stories and snippets of our community experiencing the joy of giving. BONES “My favorite TV show since sixth grade has been 'Bones.' I’ve watched every season over 12 times throughout the years because I love it so much. I love the characters and how well the actors and actresses make those characters come to life. I love the action and mystery to it. I plan to go into the medical field myself, so seeing them deal with all of the scary and gross parts is what I love the most.” – Laurel Jones, Miss Southlake Outstanding Teen 2020

THE MANDALORIAN DISNEY+ NOVEMBER 12 WITNESS THE FALL OF THE EMPIRE AND THE RISE OF THE FIRST ORDER “Star Wars” is getting a bold new update in the form of a space western. This exciting new sci-fi series will launch on November 12 on Disney’s new streaming service, Disney+, and you won’t want to miss this new chapter in the expanding saga. Taking place in between the events of “Return of the Jedi” and “The Force Awakens,” “The Mandalorian” follows a lone gunfighter and bounty hunter who’s just trying to survive. While he’s doing that, a resurgence of the fallen Empire is rising in the form of the First Order, and the Mandalorian will have to find his place in a changing galaxy. Starring Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano and Nick Nolte and created by “Iron Man” director Jon Favreau, “The Mandalorian” is a gritty, grounded take on the “Star Wars” mythos. You’ll love getting to see where the darker corners of the galaxy will take you.

IN THE DREAM HOUSE CARMEN MARIA MACHADO NOVEMBER 5 WHAT HAPPENS IN THE TWISTED HALLWAYS OF THE DREAM HOUSE? What do fairy tales, legal proceedings, Disney villains and “Star Trek” all have in common? Well, for one thing, this book. In this engrossing memoir by short story author Carmen Maria Machado, “In The Dream House” tells a harrowing account of a relationship gone bad, the torments of psychological abuse and how the effects can lead to a downward spiral. Machado combines several different genre tropes into this riveting tale, including horror, thriller and romance. What will the twisted walls and hallways of “In The Dream House” bring for its curious readers? That remains to be seen, but one thing is for certain — it is definitely not going to be a casual read.

ask A. . PAUL PORTER CHERISHES HIS FIFTH YEAR WITH SOUTHLAKE HISTORICAL SOCIETY’S ‘THE GHOSTS OF SOUTHLAKE PAST’

WHEN DID YOU FIRST BECOME INVOLVED WITH THE SOUTHLAKE HISTORICAL SOCIETY? I got connected with the Southlake Historical Society from volunteering at the library; our wonderful librarians recommended that I join when I was a sophomore or junior at Carroll. HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH THE GHOSTS OF SOUTHLAKE PAST? The historical society asked me to volunteer; I did, and I loved it! This is going to be my fifth time as a ghost of Southlake at the cemetery tour. WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP AN INTEREST IN HISTORY? I’ve enjoyed history since I was around 10 — that’s when I started reading more history books and really got into it and made it a hobby. IS THERE A PARTICULAR MOMENT IN LOCAL HISTORY THAT YOU ARE FASCINATED WITH? It’s the stories of the people that fascinate me. The lives of the old residents of Southlake are breathtaking in many instances. There is even a War of 1812 veteran buried in the Hood Cemetery in Southlake. WHAT ABOUT THIS EVENT MAKES YOU COME BACK EVERY YEAR? It’s all about the history of our town and the nation as a whole in some cases. I can think of no better way to honor the memory of those past residents than by telling their stories.

... REENACTOR

Paul Porter HOW DID PEOPLE REACT TO SEEING YOU DRESSED IN YOUR REENACTOR GARB? They loved it! I try hard to look as authentic as I can because I believe it is part of the experience. It becomes more authentic to people when they can really see it.

HOW DID YOU DIVE INTO YOUR LOVE FOR HISTORY AT CARROLL? I’m a “kindergrad” from Carroll, and I love the schools. I’ve had excellent teachers, and I took as many classes as I could and do as much as I can with the Southlake Historical Society.

WHAT ARE YOU STUDYING NOW AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS, AND WHAT WILL YOU PURSUE AFTER GRADUATION? I’m a business major with minors in history and English. After I graduate in December, I’ll be working for a recycling company, and I’ll still keep helping the Southlake Historical Society.

oy James has always been surrounded by soldiers. When he was a child, he grew up on military bases where his father served as a career naval officer. After high school graduation, he was drafted into the Army and served as a machine gunner in the Vietnam War. Now a retired veteran, he’s still surrounded by men in uniform; photos of 212 soldiers hang in picture frames on the walls around the canteen of Grapevine Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10454. Roy has served as the post commander for Grapevine VFW since 2016. Roy runs the group alongside his friend and ally, Senior Vice Commander Bo Pippin, a retired 30-year Marine and Purple Heart recipient. Men and women from Grapevine, Southlake and Colleyville walk through the canteen doors month after month to meet the people behind the VFW — veterans who served in the Army, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard and Navy. But to Roy and Bo, none of those branches or lengths of enlistment matter. It boils down to the fact that they served, and they had the courage and conviction to come back and help those who serve today. “I believed it was my duty to serve my country back then,” Roy says. “I still believe that is my duty to this very day.”

‘AN UNPOPULAR WAR’ After living in military bases his whole life, Roy never wanted to go back to the barracks. Yet in 1966, when he was 20 years old, Roy was drafted into the service. “When I graduated from high school, I had an opportunity to go to Annapolis,” Roy says. “I told my dad: I do not want to go to the Navy. I’ve been in the Navy for my whole life.” Roy soon left for Dallas and applied to the fire academy. Shortly after graduating, he got his draft letter in the mail. Roy says he wasn’t happy when he opened that letter, but he was resolute in doing what he needed to for his country. “When I went into the service, I was very proud to serve my country,” Roy says. “That was the draft. Living on a military base, you always had in your mind that you were serving your country. You did what needed to be done.” Bo’s experiences were slightly different from Roy’s. As soon as Bo graduated from high school in Nashville, he didn’t wait for the draft and signed up as soon as he could for the Marine Corps. Bo was 17 years old when he joined the Marines infantry in 1964 and stayed with the Corps until 1994. “It was an unpopular war,” Bo recalls. “At the time, much of the social attitude was kind of anti-military.” By the time Roy and Bo enlisted, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson assumed office and an additional 5,000 U.S. military advisors were deployed to South Vietnam. That brought the total number of American troops to 21,000, according to the U.S. Congressional Quarterlies. American involvement in the Vietnam War was just ramping up. SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

‘WE’RE GOING TO HOLD THIS HILL’ It was the summer of 1969, and Roy was a member of the fourth Infantry Division, which patrolled the border between Laos and Vietnam along with another company. “We were overlooking the Ho Chi Minh trail, which was on the other side of the river,” Roy recalls. “Our companies were about two miles apart from each other.” While they were on patrol, Roy heard gunfire and screaming from the other company. They were ambushed by a North Vietnamese regiment. Support rushed in to reinforce them. They exchanged gunfire with the enemy, but by then they were too late. The entire company was wiped out in a matter of minutes. All that was left was saving Roy’s comrades. His lieutenant instructed Roy and two other gunners to take a position on the hill while the rest of the company withdrew. The lieutenant’s words still echo in his mind to this day: “We’re going to hold this hill.” Roy says he and the other gunners held out for as long as they could, but it wasn’t long until they were overwhelmed by the opposition. “Me and my assistant gunner both got shot by automatic weapon fire after we had exhausted all of our ammunition,” Roy recalls. “I helped him with a broken leg while I had a shoulder that was broke. I’m helping him. He’s hobbling with me. And we get back to where our company was held up.” Roy and his assistant gunner got back to camp and were immediately treated with an adhesive that had recently been invented called super glue. Roy spent several months in the hospital, and he even shook hands with President Johnson at Fort Hood. But he couldn’t NOV 19 • 21

get his mind off of the more than 100 people that were lost in battle that day. “There were 146 men in my company,” Roy recalls. “When the day was over, there were 26 of us left alive. Of the 26, six were not wounded.” ‘WE’RE NOT GONNA LEAVE YOU STANDING OUT THERE’ While he was in the hospital, all Roy heard on the news was American citizens protesting the war. When he was discharged, he saw even more of that up close. “When I got out of the hospital and I came back to Dallas with my mom and dad, the people were still protesting,” Roy recalls. “They were protesting in the parks, the streets, the terminals. It didn’t register. I was, like, why? I’m here just doing my job.” While Roy sometimes felt underappreciated for his service, the people who mattered to him most helped him persevere. He recalled family and friends who sent him care packages every two weeks filled with oatmeal, cookies and Louisiana hot sauce that he would pour onto his meals. It was a small gesture, but Roy never forgot. “I knew I had support from the people closest to me — my family, my church — because they were sending me gifts,” Roy says. “We didn’t have a lot of support from people. But we had support from the people who were most important to us.” That experience has fueled him, at least partially, toward Grapevine VFW’s activism and community engagement. About two or three times a year, Grapevine VFW sends care packages to active service members stationed in the Middle East. Roy says it's important that they know people are there for them like some people were there for Roy. “We’ll send 150 to 200 boxes of stuff for the troops — toothbrushes, socks, stuff like that — just to let them know that we’re here for you,” Roy says. “We’re thinking about you. PARADES, PURPLE HEARTS AND PATRIOTISM The care packages are not all Grapevine VFW does. Every year, the post hosts the Grapevine Veterans Day Parade along Main Street on November 9 and draws attention to issues, organizations and resources veterans may use for assistance. Roy says it's their most popular event with both sides of the street’s sidewalks completely filled with people. Other times, their activism is more personal. In 2018, one member, Colleyville resident Dale Stowe, passed away. He was an Army combat medic in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968, and he won the Bronze Star Medal for Valor and three Purple Hearts. “He went in and pulled soldiers out from the line of fire,” says Perry Vargas, a Navy veteran and Southlake resident. “He got wounded several times, but he just kept pushing through. I miss him.” In honor of Dale, Grapevine VFW sponsored 24 • NOV 19

a puppy from Patriot Paws, a program that raises and trains service dogs. When the puppy completes his training, he will go to a disabled veteran in need at no cost. Grapevine VFW even named the puppy after Dale and members will attend the dog’s graduation ceremony. “We’re here for our community,” Bo says. “That’s why you establish places like this, so you can be surrounded by people with those same attitudes.” From running fundraisers for Grapevine Police and Fire to holding canned food drives for needy families around the holidays, Grapevine VFW leaves nobody behind. That’s why Roy and Bo think it’s so important to support veterans in need, whether you join the post as an auxiliary member or come to one of its local events. It doesn’t matter if you were in the Army or the Navy, or if you served three years or 40 years — if you're a veteran, you have a home at Grapevine VFW.

DRAGON FOOTBALL HOSTS PINK OUT NIGHT On Friday, October 11, Southlake Carroll hosted Byron Nelson and the 11th annual Pink Out Night at Dragon Stadium. The home game event, originally founded by Amy Moon, featured an on-field recognition to honor breast cancer survivors and raise funds and awareness to fight breast cancer. Survivors were escorted onto the field prior to kickoff and received a free pink T-shirt. The Dragons also held a “Passthe-Bucket” donation at the game to raise money for Susan G. Komen’s efforts. This was on top of the money raised by the CISD auction for a chance to watch the game from the Community Box in the Dragon Press Box and CISD’s efforts to raise money during Pink Out month every Thursday during October. LOCAL CAR COLLECTORS WIN BIG AT PARK PLACE LUXURY & SUPERCAR SHOWCASE More than 4,500 people came out for the third annual Park Place Luxury & Supercar Showcase on September 28 to experience rare cars, live music, high fashion and delicious bites. And two local collectors came out as winners. Southlake resident Raymond Larson and his 1964 Aston Martin DB5 received the Chairman’s Award. Colleyville collector Whitney Stark won second in class in the German Classic for his 1956 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL. Thanks to all the day’s fun, the lifestyle event raised $141,000 for Baylor Scott & White Irving Foundation. Be on the lookout for information for the fourth annual event, which is already in the works. CARROLL ISD AQUATIC CENTER REOPENS AFTER EXTENSIVE RENOVATIONS The Carroll ISD Aquatic Center has reopened with a new look after going through an extensive $4 million update. Renovations include a new pump installation, underwater pool lights, a coat of paint, diving boards and platforms, showers and sinks, a family bathroom in the lobby and an entryway to make the center more safe and secure for the swimming public. Renovations yet to be completed include aluminum or treated metal doors and windows that are rust-resistant. CISD swim head coach Kevin Murphy says the boys and girls swim teams are happy to be swimming at the newly renovated aquatic center again and estimates that the upgrades will extend the center’s lifespan by 20 years. CARROLL THEATRE PRESENTS THIRD ANNUAL 24 HOUR PLAY PROJECT About 40 Carroll Theatre students gathered at the high school last month to write, produce, direct, design and star in their own original short productions, which debuted live 24 hours later. Carroll Theatre Boosters Vice President Kristina Guzman says this experiment focused on intense team building, self-expression and confidence building to allow the theatre kids to create their own stories rather than emulate work by other playwrights. She says the theatre students had a blast performing Saturday night — and they no doubt slept well the day after.

DRAGON TENNIS EARNS 5-6A DISTRICT TITLE Dragon Tennis is the 5-6A District Champion once more. After going 7-0 in the fall regular season, the Carroll team clinched the title for the ninth year in a row. Dragon Tennis head coach Corey Aldridge says the team’s accomplishments are a result of the players’ hard work and determination. This is Aldridge’s 16th season with Dragon Tennis, and over that tenure, the Dragons have won district 15 times. Last year, Dragon Tennis got to regional semifinals — four rounds deep into the playoffs, and this year they hope to surpass that. Aldridge says the team has a saying of “iron sharpens iron,” meaning that thanks to the team’s deep talent, each individual player is made better by his or her teammates.

CARROLL DRAGON BAND SENDS OFF GLOBE LIFE PARK IN STYLE The Carroll Dragon Band kept itself busy this fall. Not only have they been performing at football games and local competitions but also they took part in the Rangers' last game at Globe Life Park. On Sunday, September 29, the band participated in a post-game farewell parade through Globe Life Park to send off the stadium in style. Southlake Carroll was the only full marching band that participated in the event and had 225 members take part in the day’s activities. CISD Band Director Ken Johnson says the group could feel the energy as soon as they walked out on the field. While some were sad to see the stadium host its last baseball game, fans have a lot to look forward to with the new stadium.

r. Terri DeNeui, nurse practitioner, has always wanted to help people. Early in her career, Terri worked for many years as a hospitalist and emergency room practitioner. Somewhere along the line, she felt her hard work and long night shifts weren’t enough. “Everybody was just so sick, and all we were doing was just writing prescription after prescription,” Terri says. “I felt like I was just Band-Aiding symptoms and not looking for the root cause of my patient’s problems in many cases.” With a laser-eyed focus on hormone optimization and disease prevention, Terri eventually re-branded the clinics she started in 2008 as EVEXIAS Medical Centers. In 2018, alongside her husband Dan, she launched EVEXIAS Health Solutions to train health care providers in the advanced hormone optimization method she’s honed over the past decade. “Most people think hormones are just to treat hot flashes, mood swings or low energy, but it is so much more than that,” Terri says. “Helping practitioners and their patients understand the pivotal role of hormones like estrogen, testosterone, progesterone and thyroid play in heart disease, Alzheimer’s, memory loss, depression, certain cancers, metabolic syndrome and so much more is my passion when I teach.” This specialized method of hormone

optimization, now branded EvexiPEL, includes not only assessing and treating hormone deficiencies in women and men but also hormone metabolism and hormone receptor activity. Terri compared approaching hormone optimization to fueling up your car, but never doing a tune-up, cleaning the engine, changing the oil or any other maintenance you may need for your vehicle. “The gas is in the tank, but the fuel cannot get into the engine to do the work,” Terri remarks. The integrated approach is what sets her clinic teams and training curriculum apart. EVEXIAS Health Solutions coined the approach the EvexiPEL method and trained over 400 health care providers across the country in just its first year of business. “It’s a testament to patients and health care providers’ desire for alternate ways to optimize health and offer real solutions to the growing health care crisis in America,” Dan says. EVEXIAS Medical Centers now has more than 30 staff members and serves thousands of patients every year with the EvexiPEL method. EVEXIAS Health Solutions has expanded to 80 staff nationally to support the growing number of EvexiPEL providers. EVEXIAS’ teaching faculty includes world-renowned hormone optimization and disease prevention guru Dr.

(L-R) Founders of EVEXIAS Terri DeNeui, DNP, APRN, ACNP-BC; and Dan DeNeui, CEO

Neal Rouzier, as well as other thought leaders in the field. Neal and Terri spend much of their time researching and keeping up with the latest studies to ensure they, along with their team, are teaching the most up-to-date information. “My view on hormones completely changed when I heard Terri DeNeui speak at a conference in April 2019,” Dr. Julie Shelley says. “I started to think about patients within my family medicine practice and realized that there were so many symptoms and conditions that I could have safely treated with the use of bioidentical hormones. I attended the EVEXIAS training with my nurse, and we were invigorated from learning about how much bioidentical hormone treatment could help our patients. I only wish I had known about EVEXIAS sooner.” Terri says she’s seen a lot of growth, change and transition in EVEXIAS Medical Centers over the last 10 years — and it’s all thanks to the huge team of experienced, talented people she works with. “I never dreamed the clinic would grow to become as successful as it is, that we would have four locations or that I would be teaching advanced disease prevention strategies alongside some of the leaders in this industry,” she expresses. “We are truly blessed to be able to serve practitioners and their patients in this way.”

The fully taped, cut-in nylon bucket floor adds structural strength to the tent, and the 10 interior pockets provide plenty of storage for your family’s packs. Whether you are taking this across the globe or just from your garage to your lawn, gone are the days of dragging around a heavy backpack thanks to this lightweight alternative. And while you may be shocked by the Bastion 4 Tent’s price tag, you will be thanking yourself later on for making the investment.

elicate fingers drenched in vibrant purples and pinks color in the intricate Rangoli art outline along the streets of India. The morning sun rises and chrysanthemums and marigolds adorn the area’s neighborhoods. Oil lit earthen lamps, or diyas, mark the corner of Indian homes eagerly awaiting nightfall, when the shimmering light will shine through the darkness. This symbol of victory of good over evil and light over darkness represents everything Diwali, the fiveday Hindu-originating but not religious specific holiday held every autumn, stands for.

As the sky darkens, fireworks explode above the skylines and along the side streets of every Indian town. But the celebration doesn’t just reside in the South Asian country. Back in Southlake, Kush Rao, originally from Hyderabad, India, recalls how those bright light displays shaped his childhood. “[I loved] the feeling of oneness with not only my family, but extended family, savoring the special delicacies like Galub Jamun [a decadent Indian dessert] prepared only for Diwali,” Kush says, “[And] decorating our home with small diyas while enjoying the nighttime firework displays.” But Kush does not just reminisce. He draws from that feeling of togetherness to share the excitement and purpose of the holiday with Southlake Diwali.

Shaping Southlake Diwali On one crisp October evening in 2017, Shady Oaks homeowners decided to bring the neighborhood together with a collaborative Diwali. For many residents, celebrating Diwali was not new, but this time, they gathered together to organize something larger than any individual could do on one’s own. By dividing up different tasks, the event’s first year open to the public was a success with more than 250 people in attendance. “Everyone had a sense of ownership,” says Kush. “The celebration was a grand success and that euphoria of that success and satisfaction created a desire to spread the word about Diwali and share the happiness, which ultimately led us to the first annual Diwali Fest in 2018.” When the group discussed the next year’s Diwali celebration, they knew inviting even more people to participate and giving the activities a larger stage would enhance the event’s message of togetherness. SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

Bringing Diwali to Southlake With a heart to share this holiday with the community, Kush and his neighbors brought their vision of celebrating diversity from Shady Oaks to the larger community. “We want our community to experience diversity, experience peace, experience sustainability, experience togetherness and at the same time, take a few moments from our busy lives and experience life together through this festival,” says Kush. Their concept was well received by the mayor and several city councilmembers. “I am so proud that our city plays host to Southlake Diwali,” says Mayor Laura Hill. “I believe it’s so important to celebrate all of our different cultures, and Diwali — A Festival of Lights — is the perfect opportunity to rejoice in our blessings with family and friends.” As for Councilmember Dr. Shahid Shafi, he couldn’t have sung higher praises about Diwali Fest’s founder. “Kush Rao took the lead in organizing this event last year and again this year with the help of a large number of volunteers. He is a true servant-leader who has served all of the communities in Southlake,” Shafi says. “We are blessed to have [Kush and his family] in Southlake.” With this support, the expanded event set for Nov. 9, 2018, started to take shape. Kush’s simple vision of multicultural unity paired with rich, authentic Indian food, dynamic Indian performances and traditional music gave the committee chairs a lot to work with. And with nearly 200 volunteers helping bring the day together, it was easy to see early on that the group wasn’t just putting on a one-time festival. With a rotating crowd of around 2,000, the day’s attendees brought excitement and engaging dancers performed routines from Kathak and Bharata Natyum to Manipuri to Bollywood, providing the whole area with entertainment. NOV 19 • 57

“One of the highlight performances from last year was the Colors of Culture — where a team of 25 women dressed up and performed to various regional dances from all over India that culminated in a show-stopping performance,” Kush says with a smile recalling the energy the dance pumped through the crowd. Not only professionals took the stage. Stephanie Hays, a neighbor and friend of Kush, came for the festival and also became a part of the show. “I loved the idea from the beginning, getting to experience new things in life, in which I can learn about other people, their culture and celebrate differences,” Hays says. “It’s something that I always tell my kids, and having the ability to perform at Diwali Fest is a chance that I can show them how to become culturally enriched, even while staying in Southlake.”

What’s New About Diwali Fest 2019 Diwali Fest 2019 is bringing the fun back to Southlake with even more dazzling colors, brighter lights and more of a concert feel. With the help of local academies such as Natyom Dance Academy and Let’s Bollywood Dance Academy, festival-goers can expect even more Indian performances. Southlake Diwali’s new additions will undoubtedly draw even larger crowds of both Indians recalling a taste of home and community residents interested in learning about the holiday. 58 • NOV 19

Live cooking shows will not only bring the aromas and taste of India to Southlake but also an interactive experience of Indian living and Diwali traditions. A fashion show will include traditional and nontraditional Indian attire, and a market experience will showcase local artisans selling casual and traditional party wear, ethnic wear and jewelry. While attendees are encouraged to wear traditional Indian attire, locals are welcome to come just as they are. It’s not the fashions that make Diwali; it’s the community’s desire to be a part of something larger that keeps Diwali special. Kush thinks that curiosity starts at an early age, which is why he is expanding the kids’ offerings this year as well. “We hope the festivities will enrich kids' experiences and raise their curiosity and awareness to learn more about Diwali,” says Kush. This year’s Diwali Fest will be hosted on Nov. 2 at 3 p.m. at Rustin Pavilion in Southlake Town Square. It’s set to be a vibrant display full of significance. “Celebrating Diwali in Southlake means a lot,” Kush says, his eyes beaming. “It brings back a flood of fond childhood memories surrounding the festival and a feeling of home. It also means creating experiences and memories about Diwali celebration for the next generation of kids that they can reminisce about later in life. It gives us all immense happiness to be able to share the spirit of Diwali.”

Library Love

T

he pages of a good book can take you anywhere. It doesn’t matter whether you’re sailing on the stormy seas with Captain Ahab in “Moby-Dick” or traveling with Alice in the topsy-turvy world of Wonderland — every book holds a new adventure. Just imagine, then, having all of the stories, tales and fantasies at your fingertips in your own athome library. Whether you fill a room to the brim with your favorite books or expertly ration out your collection in a minimalistic manner, these styling tips will create the ideal space for your next literary plunge.

LADDER LOUNGING We don’t know about you, but we love the idea of climbing up on a rolling ladder and moving from bookshelf to bookshelf like Belle in “Beauty and the Beast.” Shelves with sliding ladders can be relatively affordable purchases for those who want to recreate that magic in their own homes. Climb up as you search for that old Emily Dickinson novel you haven’t picked up in a while, or roll around as you look for Tom Sawyer and his pal Huckleberry Finn in “The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer.” Even if you don’t use

it for practical purposes, these bookshelves make a statement all on their own.

COUCH COMFORT Once you’ve secured your author of choice, finding a cozy place to enjoy your book is the next challenge. Luckily, a comfy couch serves as a great reading space. Whether you read sitting down or lying on your back, a soft and spacious sofa lets you relax while you’re absorbed in your book. You can also complement your couch with a plush footrest that lets you kick your feet up and leisurely enjoy your book in peace and quiet.

LAMP LIGHT-UP One thing every booklover needs is proper lighting. While many home libraries have windows that can let in natural sunlight or overhead fixtures that hang from the ceiling, lamps make reading easier. Whether the room is accented with traditional tableside models or an arc floor lamp that brings the light right to you, find the fixture that matches the tone of your space. With the right accessories, you can immerse yourself even further into the wonders of a quintessential reading experience.

A Clean Slate For Quality Dining Il Bracco Provides Italian Bites In A Polished Environment

he Plaza at Preston Center curates chic shops and eateries for its daily visitors and customers. Now, the North Dallas district has a new restaurant, il Bracco, turning heads because of its sleek design and fresh offerings. Locals may know Western Addition’s COO Matt Gottlieb and CEO Robert Quick from their other dining accomplishments, like Hillstone, R&D Kitchen and Houston’s. Now the pair offers modern dishes in one of Dallas’ premier neighborhoods. “We felt like this was a prime location to introduce our restaurant group to Dallas,” Gottlieb says. “The Plaza at Preston Center has always been one of the elite dining and shopping areas

in the Metroplex, and we were eager to jump at the opportunity when they had an opening.” Il Bracco elevates classic Italian recipes with prime ingredients all while serving them in a relaxed yet upscale environment. As soon as guests walk past the breezy patio and open the restaurant’s doors, the mood shifts. Gone are the worries of the outside world. The interior and décor provide a clean slate for locals to come in and build their own dining experience. “We wanted the interior to feel classy yet inviting with a blend of modern and classic design elements,” Gottlieb says. “The use of neutral colors in our wood, brass, terrazzo and leather are meant to keep the attention on the food and drinks. We wanted people to feel like they are

walking into our home for a lively dinner party.” Because all good dinner parties serve drinks, il Bracco boasts an impressive wine and cocktail list full of classic bottles and Italian concoctions. Whether you are drawn to a house specialty like The Bracco, a frozen greyhound with Aperol and fresh-squeezed ruby grapefruit juice, or prefer a glass of Tuscan wine, the menu provides an array of satisfying sips. “We tasted over 700 wines, and our clientele has responded very well to our goal of an approachable Italian wine list sprinkled with some of our domestic favorites,” Gottlieb says. While the drinks provide a great introduction to il Bracco’s offerings, the menu comes to life with its starters. The crispy artichokes, served with olive aioli, act as a light yet addicting appetizer while the meatballs, served with Reggiano and house tomato gravy, provide those deep flavors you look for in the dish. The plethora of pasta allows guests to go bold with their entree or keep things traditional. The Bolognese, mafaldine pasta accented with a house-made beef, lamb and pork ragu and Reggiano, stands up to expectations while the Spicy Gemelli with spicy vodka sauce and basil offers a new take on a classic combination. Each element is served at its peak, including those that are prepared in il Bracco’s kitchen on a daily basis. “All of our pastas, breads and desserts are made in-house fresh daily, and all of our meat and seafood is butchered in-house every day as well,” Gottlieb says. For a stand-out dish that will make you come back for more, order the Porchetta, a thick-cut pork roast served with whole grain mustard sauce and an herb salad. The bright herbs and subtle mustard addition cuts through the fatty exterior, which ensures each bite is balanced. The New York strip steak — broiled USDA prime steak topped with salsa verde and served with heirloom carrots — shines thanks to the details. And the Mediterranean sea bass — panroasted and topped with mint gremolata before being served with broccolini — puts an emphasis on its clean, fresh ingredients. Round out your night with the silky panna cotta served with biscotti crumbles or the chocolate torte topped with the lightest whipped cream you can imagine. Both act as great conclusions to the ultimate modern Italian feast.

New Look, Same Flavors Chef Point Cafe Opens Second Location In Colleyville Whether you know it from its larger-than-life Bloody Mary or beloved bread pudding, Chef Point Cafe has a reputation that stretches outside of the Metroplex. The chef-driven restaurant has expanded thanks to its second location in Colleyville, which opened in September. Chef Point Cafe first gained attention because of its flagship’s unorthodox location — inside a Conoco gas station in Watauga. But thanks to its bold offerings and delicious flavors, locals came from all over to dine in. During its tenure, Chef Point Cafe’s owners chef Franson Nwaeze and his wife Paula Merrell Nwaeze have gained recognition from “USA Today” to “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” for not only its locale but also its exciting dishes. “Having been featured on the Food Network multiple times, the front page of ‘The New York Times,’ and many other national outlets, foodies come from around the world to taste chef Fransons' American/Italian and African cuisine,” Paula says. Chef Point Colleyville offers both fine dining and exquisite interiors thanks to its breezy layout and modern décor. “The Colleyville location has a whole different vibe; the restaurant is bright and airy and full of plants,” Paula says. While the two restaurants’ layouts may look different on first glance, their offerings remain the same. For those looking for a brunch favorite, enjoy the Bloody Best Bloody Mary. The stacked drink is double the size of the restaurant’s typical Bloody Mary and includes fried chicken, a slider, waffle fries, grilled shrimp, jalapeno pepper, pickle spear and bacon. It may run for $35, but the picture of you trying to finish the cocktail will be priceless. The cioppino, an understated tomato-based classic, blends high quality seafood and precise seasoning together, making for a refreshing starter. The Maple Leaf Duck, served with an orange sauce over angel hair pasta, comes out well-rendered and moist while the Blackened Stuffed Wild Swordfish, topped with an Asiago cream sauce, offers a hearty bite thanks to its crab meat stuffing. Guests must save room for the freshly made bread pudding, smothered in a hot cognac sauce. Because if it’s good enough for celebrity restaurateur Guy Fieri, then it has to be worth a try.

Mercy Wine Bar first opened in 2003 as a tribute to the French and Italian wine experience. Owners Glen Agritelley and Vincent Havard reveled in stopping into quaint bistros and bars to sip on a glass of vino or enjoy a quick bite while traveling through Europe, so they brought that energy to Addison. The wine-driven restaurant offers more than 100 varietals by the glass as well as flights for those who want to enjoy their own personal tastings. Mercy Wine Bar’s staff will also guide interested customers through a wine pairing to ensure everyone enjoys the right appetizers and food with their selections. Plus, with mood lighting and live music, this homey bistro acts as an ideal starting point for any night out. MercyWineBar.com

Another European-inspired eatery can be found just down the street. Kenny’s Italian Kitchen provides a cozy yet familiar environment for those who want to dive into rich comfort foods. After taking a seat next to their traditional red-checkered tablecloths and ordering either a crisp martini or bold glass of red wine, ease into your meal with the bruschetta, served with tomatoes, Kalamata olives, fresh basil and roasted garlic, to get a feel for Kenny’s flavors and portions. While the massive bone-in veal parmigiana and shrimp scampi stand up to expectations, the housemade lasagna is the real winner. The classic pasta dish, available gluten-free with 24 hours’ notice, gives diners what they crave from an Italian spread: wholesome, warm and well-known flavors. KennysItalian.com

MISS SOUTHLAKE OUTSTANDING TEEN TALKS SUICIDE PREVENTION AND AWARENESS

A

s a 16-year-old junior at The Colony High School, the new Miss Southlake Outstanding Teen has proven she has a true passion for the pageant world. Laurel Jones has won three Miss Outstanding Teen titles — including Miss McKinney Outstanding Teen and Miss Park Cities Outstanding Teen — and shared her story along the way, even when it hasn’t been positive. As a child, Laurel struggled with her self-image and even hid suicidal thoughts from her parents and friends. But after she came forward and got the help she needed, Laurel learned how to use her experience to help others. That’s why she decided to focus on suicide prevention and awareness through her social impact initiative, Behind the S.A.S.H.

I FIRST GOT INVOLVED IN THE MISS AMERICA ORGANIZATION… when I joined the Lone Star Princess program at 7 years old. It’s a program where little girls ages 5 to 12 get their own crown and sash and are mentored by a Miss or Miss Outstanding Teen. You go to appearances with them and go on stage for evening gown portions. One of my family friends was competing as a teen at the time. She had to have a Lone Star Princess, and she asked me to be hers. I WASN’T REALLY... expecting anything in my first competition. I just kind of went in with an open mind wanting to see what this was about. Every year I’ve just grown more and more. Whenever I’m on stage, it’s one of the best moments of my life. It’s something I really love, and I never want it to end. I WAS SO SURPRISED AND HONORED... when they announced me as the new Miss Southlake’s Outstanding Teen. The next morning I got to sleep in, and once I woke up, I realized that it wasn't all a dream and I really was Miss Southlake’s Outstanding Teen. I’m really excited to make appearances throughout the city and share my message of Behind the S.A.S.H. THE ACRONYM BEHIND THE S.A.S.H.… has a double-meaning. The first part is: Suicidal thoughts, Anxiety and Self-Harm. The second part is: Speak out, find an Active support system, Share your talent and passions and Help everyone. For me, competing in Miss America pageants was one of the biggest things that really helped me. I was able to put all the pressure I was feeling into a positive outlet instead of turning to cutting and self-harm as a negative outlet. Behind the S.A.S.H was about bringing it back full circle and helping everyone. THE MOST HEARTBREAKING STORY I’VE EVER HEARD… came from a parent who recently lost her child to suicide. After I shared my story and opened up the day for an art auction, this mom

came up to me and she started crying. She was talking about how her child had just committed suicide and how my words touched her. The fact that I was able to be there for her and kind of help her toward a sense of closure was just a wholesome feeling. EVERYONE THINKS... that it’s something that you need to hide behind — that you cannot talk to anyone about it. That stigma needs to be broken because so many people are struggling in silence and are not getting the help they deserve and need. They’re not just upset. You have an illness, and you need to get the help to fix it, just like if you had cancer or another type of disease. MY FRIEND FIRST HARMED HERSELF… in sixth grade. When she told me, I was like ‘Why on earth would you do that? That’s so dumb. You’re just hurting yourself.’ But you really don’t understand it until you’re in that situation. LESS THAN A YEAR LATER... I was in her same position. I was really down on myself. I really felt like I had no one there for me. I felt like if I was out of this world, it would be better for everyone else. So I turned to self-harm. For me, it was the release of all of the pressure and pain that I felt. My friend was the one who ended up turning me into the school counselor. I WAS… really upset at her at the time. I thought she had betrayed our entire friendship. I was like ‘How could you do this to me?’ But now I am so grateful that she did that because my family and I were able to work together to get me the help I needed. I WILL DEFINITELY CONTINUE WITH MY SOCIAL IMPACT INITIATIVE… regardless of whether I go straight into the Miss America organization or not. You don’t have to have the crown and the sash to be able to do that. I don’t need to be Miss Southlake Outstanding Teen to be able to help. I can simply be Laurel Jones and do just as much.

Sinya On Lone Man Creek It doesn’t get much better than waking up in a gorgeous retreat in the middle of Texas Hill Country and looking out on all nature has to offer. Sinya on Lone Man Creek provides that and more to guests from across the world. The property’s founder Lynn Gallimore was inspired to open Sinya after going on a safari in Tanzania. After returning home, she wanted to create a similar experience to enjoy here in Texas, so she purchased a five-acre property in Wimberley and built a gorgeous tent fit for royalty. Shortly after completing her retreat, she decided to share it with anyone interested in experiencing something different. Now, 10 years later, Sinya still provides everything you could want while glamping. While the tent only has room for one pair of guests at a time, meaning that reservations book out months in advance, there’s plenty to explore if you're able to snag a couple of nights on the property. It’s easy to decompress while enjoying a soak in the hot tub or while kayaking down Lone Man Creek. Or, for those who want to use their stay to spend quality time together, the rooms are stocked with everything necessary to create a truly romantic haven. HillCountrySinya.com

El Cosmico Yurts, tepees, trailers and safari tents are all available at El Cosmico, a 21-acre nomadic property located in West Texas’ Marfa. This hipster haven offers picture-perfect shelter options for those who want to try something outside of their comfort zone, including taking a break from Wi-Fi access. The wide-open space promises to give guests a break from the business of everyday life and immerse them into the beauty of the area. Just imagine lying in a hammock, biting into a fresh s’more and looking up at a sky full of stars. Sounds dreamy to us! If you’re heading out this month or anytime before the spring comes around, know that the high plains desert can experience freezing temperatures, so come prepared with warm clothing and lots of extra blankets. Meow: ‘Cats’ is Back! Sing Along To The Famed Musical Just Ahead Of Its New Film Adaption!

G

rumpy, curious, mischievous, adorable — cats may have nine lives, but they also have hundreds of moods. Even so, we love them all the same! If you are a proud cat lady, love watching hilarious cat videos online or have a precious little fur-ball named Whiskers at home, then “Cats” was made for you. This world-famous musical was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber (the man behind “The Phantom of the Opera”), who based it on T.S. Eliot’s poetry book, “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats.” The story introduces a tribe of cats called the Jellicle, who choose a new cat every year to descend to the Heaviside Layer and come back reborn. If you get lost in the mythicalness of it, don’t worry — the cats often break the fourth wall to explain everything to the audience. Since it first opened on Broadway in 1982, “Cats” has won seven Tony Awards (including Best Musical) and a Grammy Award, has been presented in over 30 countries in 15 different languages and has been seen by more than 73 million people! Next month, the first live-action adaption of the iconic musical will premiere, starring Idris Elba, James Corden, Taylor Swift and others. This year’s touring production features the original scenic and costume design created by John Napier (who also did “Les Misérables”), with new lighting design, sound design, choreography and direction geared toward the next generation. Of course, it still includes one of the most famous songs in musical theater history, “Memory,” which has been recorded by over 150 artists throughout the years — from Barbra Streisand to Barry Manilow. Sigmund Freud once said, “Time spent with cats is never wasted.” He wasn’t technically talking about “Cats,” but he might as well have been. This musical is sure to be the highlight of your month.

King George Comes Back Home Enjoy A Live Performance By Texas Music Legend George Strait

G

rey hair. Green eyes. Black cowboy hat. Irresistible Southern charm. At first glance, this Texas native looks like any other good ol’ boy. But when he pulls out his guitar and starts singing, you’ll realize that you’re actually in the presence of royalty. Country music royalty, that is. The iconic George Strait is the king of country music, with a record 27 No. 1 albums on the Billboard Top Country Albums Chart, 33 platinum or multi-platinum albums sold (ranking him just behind The Beatles and Elvis Presley), more than 70 million albums sold and more than 60 major entertainment awards including a Grammy and a Country Music Hall of Fame induction under his Texas-sized belt buckle. Oh yeah, he also has 60 No. 1 singles, which is more than any other artist ever — of any genre.

King George is returning to his home state of Texas to play live this month — a rare treat since he retired from touring five years ago. This 2018 Texan of the Year (it’s a real award!) is known for his old school country sound and a voice that makes you want to get up and move. During his show, expect to hear some of George’s newest material such as “Honky Tonk Time Machine,” “Every Little Honky Tonk Bar” and “Old Violin.” This 30-year music veteran will also sing some of his beloved hits, like “All My Ex’s Live in Texas,” “Love Without End, Amen” and “Write This Down.” The weather, fashion trends and opinions change, but George Strait’s classic country sound has always remained the same. Are you going to his concert? Check “Yes” or “Heck Yes!”

NOVEMBER 22-24

NOVEMBER 24

WINSPEAR OPERA HOUSE | It’s a story we’ve all heard: Guy meets girl. They fall in love. They live happily ever after. But somehow, “Once” tells this timeless tale in a completely new way. This eight-time Tony-winning Broadway play is coming to Winspear Opera House to share the story of Guy, a Dublin troubadour, and Girl, a young Czech woman. Guy is about to give up his dream when he meets Girl, who loves his songs. Their chemistry grows, and so does his music, revealing the power of love in helping you follow your dreams. In a unique twist, the actors really play music and perform as their own on-stage orchestra. “Once” will take your breath away, until “The End.”

WINSTAR WORLD CASINO | Trevor Noah knows how to make people laugh. His sarcastic, witty one-liners and deadpan political commentary helped this South African comedian become the host of “The Daily Show,” Comedy Central’s Emmy-winning news satire series. When he isn’t busy learning new languages — he currently speaks seven — or appearing in major films like “Black Panther,” you can catch him on tour, bringing his jokes to the masses. He’s stopping in town this month as part of his Loud & Clear Tour, where he will be, well, loud and clear about his thoughts on society, politics and the entertainment industry right now.

SOUTHLAKE’S HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS ANNUAL TREE LIGHTING NOVEMBER 23 SOUTHLAKE TOWN SQUARE | ‘Twas the week before Thanksgiving and all through Southlake, every creature was stirring — it’s time to celebrate! Welcome the arrival of the holiday season (finally!) at Southlake’s Home for the Holidays annual tree lighting. This magical event turns Southlake into the North Pole. Go snow tubing down a four-lane hill, sing along with Christmas carolers, take a romantic horse-drawn carriage ride, build a snowman, write a letter to Santa and take your picture with him! Later, fill up on sweet hot cocoa and get some holiday shopping done early. Admission is free, but canned food, toys and clothing donations are encouraged for the Christmas is for Children program, which provides a happy Christmas to all (and to all a good night!).

DEAR EVAN HANSEN NOVEMBER 26-DECEMBER 8 MUSIC HALL AT FAIR PARK | Being in high school is tough for Evan Hansen, who doesn’t have many friends, has a crush on a girl who doesn’t know he exists and has extreme social anxiety! Watch his story play out on stage at the Dallas Summer Musical’s production of “Dear Evan Hansen,” a six-time Tony- and one-time Grammy-winning musical. This show is personal, poetic, a little dark and incredibly beautiful.

This month, see the legendary musician live at Winstar World Casino! Turning your Passion into Profits

M

aking money from something that you love to do and are passionate about. It sounds impossible, right? It’s not, and it can be your reality. Since 2008, my wife and I have been making a full-time income online. We have about 16 different streams of income ranging everything from selling physical products to our variety of books and courses on growing an online business. I’ve been incredibly blessed to never have to get a “real” job since being married. And now as a father to my 2-yearold son Callen, I have the freedom to do all the fun daddy things with him — even during the day. One of the things I am very passionate about is helping others create this freedom in their lives. You have to ask yourself: What are you interested in? What are you passionate about? What do you have a lot of knowledge about? What topic can you talk about for hours? What comes easy to you? And ask yourself: Can you imagine turning that passion into a business that pays you real money? Let’s say you are passionate about soccer. Maybe you even coach your kids’ team, but that doesn’t pay anything; however, you don’t care. You do it because you love it. But you can turn that passion into a business. Private lessons or coaching would be an obvious one, but consider the following ideas: creating an online soccer training course, starting a soccer camp (rather than having one or two clients at once, you could have

upwards of 50), designing your own brand of soccer gear and accessories, writing a book about the sport or maybe starting a soccer-related podcast. What if your passion is a bit more obscure? Take my friend Nancy, for instance. She makes beautiful wreaths, and her business used to be selling them one by one on eBay. That’s a hard business to scale, so she decided to switch gears. One day, she started teaching others how to make and sell wreaths. She now has a large email list and a Facebook group of people who look to her for the latest craftmaking tips and strategies. She has written several books and even does coaching on how to create a craft business. And by the way, she makes more money now with teaching than she did making and selling the wreaths. Whatever your niche, there is a group of hungry people waiting for your content. And they will pay you for it. So the obvious question comes down to this: How would you find them? Since this is something you are passionate about, you probably already know some of them. You might be interacting with them in your everyday life or hanging out in the same Facebook groups. So start asking them questions: What do they need? What problems are they experiencing that you can solve? Get to know those people, and serve them well. Business is relationships, and people do business with those they know, like and trust.
