feeling those thankful feelings This issue isn’t officially themed “The Thankful Issue,” but it very well could be. On the pages inside, you’ll read about people who are filled with gratitude for many different reasons. Our cover man, Keith Pardew, is a 64-year-old Army veteran, who, for 34 consecutive years, has never missed riding in the Hotter’N Hell Hundred, a 100-mile bike ride in the heat of summer. Considering that he logs more miles on his bike than many people drive, Pardew is just thankful to still be pedaling after all these years. Get a glimpse of his experiences in “Joy Ride.” Later this month, many local families will have a new reason to give thanks. November 17 is National Adoption Day, and the hope is for dozens of Tarrant County children in foster care to be adopted into their forever families. Check out our feature for ways to get involved and to hear from an area volunteer and adoptive family. I, too, am thankful for many things, including having had the opportunity to edit this exceptional publication and work alongside a team of talented and dedicated professionals. With this issue, my tenure as Southlake Style’s editor comes to a close. As I move on to my next opportunity, I’d like to offer a sincere thank you to those who have stuck with me from my first letter to my last. And if you’re a new reader, I can personally attest to the love and care that goes into each issue. This team truly does it for you—the readers, advertisers and supporters of Southlake Style. Now and always … happy reading!

“WHAT’S SO AMAZING ABOUT GRACE” | PHILIP YANCEY

The one book that has made the biggest impact on my life is one I read more than 15 years ago: “What’s So Amazing About Grace.” The author’s quote, “There is nothing we can do to make God love us more. There is nothing we can do to make God love us less,” changed my perspective about my faith. It deepened my faith to know how God loves me! Great read and I highly recommend it. Keith Pardew, longtime cyclist

“THE NATURE FIX” | FLORENCE WILLIAMS My favorite recent book is “The Nature Fix.” It synthesizes research exploring the science behind why it is so important to get out from behind our desks and spend more time in nature. Author Florence Williams suggests each of us should get into the great outdoors for a minimum of 10 hours per month. Sound easy? You would be surprised. Dr. Claudia Beeny, founder and executive director of House of Shine

HEATHER, THE TOTALITY MATTHEW WEINER NOVEMBER 7 Family, Power and Privilege Even if you don’t know his name, you are likely familiar with author Matthew Weiner’s work. He has been entertaining audiences for two decades, perhaps most notably as writer, creator, executive producer and director of “Mad Men.” Now, he is taking his talents to print with his new book, “Heather, The Totality.” Two of the novel’s main characters, Mark and Karen Breakstone, are a wealthy couple with a beautiful and talented daughter named Heather. They have what many would view as the perfect life, but they aren’t quite at the top yet. In fact, the penthouse is above them. When the new owners start construction, the Breakstone’s comfortable lives are put in limbo as a mysterious stranger threatens to destroy everything they have ever worked toward.

S.W.A.T. CBS NOVEMBER 2

Lieutenant Hondo is Back JUSTICE LEAGUE | IN THEATERS NOVEMBER 17 You Can’t Save the World Alone The plot picks up just months after the events in “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.” (If you have not seen it yet, consider this your spoiler alert). Superman’s (Henry Cavill) self-sacrifice has inspired Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) to form a team of metahumans with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot). Together, they recruit one hero after another to fight against Steppenwolf and his army of Parademons. The league enlists Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and the Flash. They work to save mankind from an immeasurable catastrophe. The movie is sure to be a fast-paced hit, so if you want to keep up, it may be best to revisit the DC Comic superhero movies that precede it.

14 • NOV 17

It’s 2017, and S.W.A.T. is reborn on CBS as a TV show based on a movie that was based on the original 1970s TV show. If that doesn’t make your head spin, the high-speed car chases and action-packed combat scenes might. The series premieres this month, starring Shemar Moore as S.W.A.T. lieutenant Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson. Join him in the streets of Los Angeles – the city he was born and raised in – as he leads a specialized tactical unit. As any original S.W.A.T. fan knows, Hondo’s unit has an intense rivalry with another L.A.-based law enforcement unit. The series promises to deliver action and drama as Hondo is torn between loyalty to where he was raised and his allegiance to fellow men and women in blue.

Army veteran Keith Pardew logs more miles on his bike than many people drive—and the 64-year-old plans to keep on pedaling.

F

or local cyclist and Army veteran Keith Pardew, there’s nothing better than riding through the open air with the wind in his hair. Well, if he had hair, he jokes. The 64-year-old Grapevine resident is short on strands, but he doesn’t lack an ounce of gusto for riding his bike all around North Texas. Pardew rides about 30 miles a day during the week and nearly 60 miles a day on Saturday and Sunday. At the end of the week, that’s roughly the equivalent of biking from Southlake to Houston. Over the past few years, this road warrior has logged close to 40,000 miles on his bike. He has ridden in dozens of one-day, 100-mile rides, called century rides, but there’s only one he wouldn’t miss: the annual Hotter’N Hell Hundred (HHH) in Wichita Falls, about two hours northwest of Southlake. This past August marked Pardew’s 34th consecutive year to ride in HHH, one of the oldest and largest cycling events in the United States. Pardew has participated in the iconic event, which draws more than 13,000 riders from all over the world, almost since the inaugural ride. “After 34 years,” he says with a laugh, “I tell people it just means I’m old and crazy.”

TAKING OFF Like many young kids, once Pardew learned how to ride a bike, there was no stopping him. He grew up on a farm in rural Maryland and spent much of his childhood pedaling through the countryside. He didn’t slow down in adulthood, even when he got drafted in the Vietnam War. “For years I played basketball and racquetball,” he says. “I’ve been active since I was in the military.” After the war, Pardew settled in Chicago and gravitated back to the bike. He took his first long ride—a three-day, 150-mile road trip with friends—almost on a whim when he was 25. “I had no idea what it entailed spiritually, mentally or physically,” he says. “After I completed it, I thought it was an unbelievable accomplishment. I thought a team from France would be calling me!” With that ride, Pardew’s fire was lit. He knew he belonged on a bike. When his career in the airline industry took him to the Metroplex in 1982, he was eager to hit the open road. He started going on rides with members of the Fort Worth Bicycle Association, one of the largest bicycling clubs in North Texas. He biked in organized rides in Bowie, Bonham, Forney and Rockwall, among other area towns. The Hotter’N Hell Hundred in Wichita Falls particularly got his wheels spinning. “I heard someone talking about the Hotter’N Hell, and I thought, ‘Gosh, I’m living in Texas. It’s hot down here. Let’s see what this is about,’” he says.

HOTTER THAN YOU KNOW WHAT You don’t have to tell any Texan that it’s sweltering in August. The average daily temperature soars well above 95 degrees, with a heat index in the triple digits. The sheer craziness of riding 100 miles during one of the hottest months of the year is what compelled Pardew to go for it. And he’s so glad he did. “I’ve always said if any town wants to have an organized bike ride, they need to see what Wichita Falls is doing,” Pardew says. “There’s nothing like Hotter’N Hell. It’s my Super Bowl, World Series and Stanley Cup all rolled into one.” SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

NOV 17 • 19

Leading up to the event, Pardew works hard to get ready, often riding six days a week, logging 250 weekly miles. “I take Fridays off because I’m not a youngster and need a day of rest,” he says. As an endurance rider, Pardew aims to ride fast, but he doesn’t try to be at the front of the pack. His goal is to average about 20 mph. “Unless you’re the first one of 13,000, there are people in front of you as far as the eye can see,” he says. “There are bicycles ahead and behind—it’s cool to be out there with so many people.” Although Pardew can keep up with cyclists much younger, his wife of 25 years, Peggy, encourages him to ride with people his own age. His response? There aren’t many folks his age out there. Well, not counting his longtime biking buddy, George Gergits, who lives in the Cincinnati, Ohio, area. Pardew invited Gergits to ride HHH with him in 1984, and Gergits has made the nearly 1,000-mile trip to Texas every year since. “Hotter’N Hell is pretty amazing. Not only am I accomplishing something, proving I can ride 100 miles in the heat, but I’m enjoying myself,” Gergits says. “There’s an energy that’s contagious to all the riders and volunteers. They’re hot. I’m hot. But you’d never know it. Everyone is smiling, laughing and having a great time.” The ride has become multigenerational for Gergits. Three of his daughters have completed it, and his fiancé has biked it three times. There are a few other upsides, as well. “I can drink beer and eat junk food. And I just look cool in those Lycra pants,” Gergits adds. 20 • NOV 17

BIKES AND FLIGHTS Pardew goes the distance—both by bike and by plane. He works parttime for a Delta subsidiary, traveling on charter flights with professional baseball, football and hockey teams, including the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Chargers. The gig keeps him busy three days a week from October through April. Though he doesn’t mingle with the athletes—his job is to make sure the flight goes smoothly— he enjoys his work. “It’s a fun parttime job I’ve been doing for about six years,” he says. “But when April rolls around, I’m done staying in hotels!” He’d much rather be on his bike. Pardew rides with the Grapevine Chain Gang, a group of cyclists that rides out of Mad Duck, a cycling shop in Grapevine. At 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, they ride wherever the wind blows. “Most cyclists are inclined to ride into the wind and come in with the wind behind them,” he says. “If the wind is out of the north, we’ll ride to Denton or Ponder. Sometimes we’ll go to Grand Prairie or Keller. There’s something about going down the road at 18, 19 or 20 mph. I just love it.” As a man in his mid-sixties, Pardew admits that sometimes it would be nice to just relax, but he never misses a ride with his group. “It’s easier to sit in my chair than go out and chase 30- and 40-year-olds,” he says. “But I’ve made a commitment. When I say ‘I’ll see you tomorrow,’ I want to honor that commitment.” From inclement weather to health concerns to major life events, nothing has stopped Pardew from getting on his bike—especially when Hotter’N Hell rolls around every August. “A friend said, ‘Do you know how lucky you are to do all these rides,’” he says. “It really got me thinking about how blessed I’ve been to be able to ride all these years. I’m grateful.” Pardew jokingly says that when he can do Hotter’N Hell with one of his grandkids, he might be done. “My goal is to do it again and have a good ride,” he says. In the meantime, he’s happy riding with the Grapevine Chain Gang until it gets too dark to see. With the wind at his back and the open road stretching before him, every ride is a joy ride.

HERITAGE DESIGN STUDIO & HERITAGE INTERIORS Timeless homes in a fast-paced market

A

mid the rapid growth and development of North Texas, one Southlake couple believes in taking time to design unique, beautiful Architecture. Chris and Angela Hough have owned and operated Heritage Design Studio since 2000. The two work together, tailoring houses to the homeowner’s specifications and desires, while maintaining a timeless aesthetic inside and out. While trends come and go, a Heritage Design Studio home stays stylish and maintains a stellar resale value. “Timelessness is all about going back to architectural roots,” Angela says. “There are classic architectural rules that really need to be respected in order to get a timeless house. It’s all about scale, proportion and detail.” The company prides itself in satisfying customers. Many times, the Houghs find that clients have attempted to work with other architects who have been unable to meet their needs. At Heritage, the Houghs work with each client to ensure that homes are built to accommodate lifestyles.

34 • NOV 17

P R O MOTI O N

In fact, ascertaining what the client needs and wants out of a home is a substantial part of the preliminary design phase. In this phase, Chris and Angela get to know clients through a series of questions, such as “What are your hobbies?” “How do you relax?” “Do your kids play sports, if so, what kinds?” “Who uses the kitchen the most?” And the list goes on. In doing so, the Houghs are able to determine specific design needs. They also walk the property being built on to get a feel of where the house will sit. From there, a bubble diagram is made. This essentially is a rough layout showing where rooms, patios, garages and other elements may be placed. This takes into account what windows face the sunrise and where the view is. When the client approves, Chris starts sketching walls and the front of the house. Next comes the design development phase. After the excited future homeowner has approved all sketches, Heritage creates a 3D model. This allows clients to virtually walk through their home before it has even been framed. “Most clients are not used to reading 2D CAD drawings,” Angela explains. “They think it looks good, they hope it looks good, but if you aren’t in a field of work where you look at 2D drawings all day, you’re really just trusting that the architect and the builders are going to provide you what you want.” Heritage uses virtual reality goggles to give clients an initial walk-through. They can get a feel for a proposed vaulted ceiling, the backsplash pattern in their Kitchen, or how big a room is in a way that isn’t translated through a 2D drawing. If something looks out of place, the client can communicate that and have it changed before any building material is used. “We love it when they see the model for the first time,” Angela says. “Many times, their mouths will fall open, and

Our ideal client is someone who really values timeless architecture and design. they will say ‘wow, that’s incredible.’ That’s the reaction we’re hoping to get, and we do 99 percent of the time.” The third and final phase is the production of construction documents. This is yet another element that sets Heritage apart. Building permits can be obtained with a minimum number of drawings, but Heritage goes above and beyond to give contractors and builders intricately detailed plans. This minimizes guesswork and ensures that clients are truly getting what they want. “The more information that is on those documents, the fewer questions there are out on the construction site between the builder and the client,” Angela says. “It really paves the way for a smooth construction process.” The immaculate detail Heritage Design offers is not reserved for enormous, high-dollar homes. Timeless design will work with any size of home. “We design homes that are 3,000 square-feet; we’ve designed homes that are 19,000 square-feet,” Angela adds. “A home's size isn't important. Our ideal client is someone who really values timeless architecture and interior design, and understands that the details matter.”

N

ovember 17, 2017, will be a day that dozens of area families will never forget. The Friday before Thanksgiving is National Adoption Day, a time when children in foster care officially become part of a loving family. No more shuffling between foster homes or wondering where they’ll end up. Kids finally get a forever home—and just in time for the holidays. Since the annual event began in 2000, more than 35,000 children have been adopted on National Adoption Day. Locally, Tarrant County Adoption Day is one of hundreds of events promoting adoption and creating forever families for kids in foster care. Last year, 76 children were adopted at the Tarrant County Family Law Center in downtown Fort Worth. This year, the hope is for even more children to receive something every child deserves: a family.

LOVE, LAUGHTER AND CHANGED LIVES On Tarrant County Adoption Day, the courthouse’s typically somber setting transforms into an all-out celebration with balloons, teddy bears, costumed superheroes and a sea of smiling faces. The energy is unlike anything Denee’ Borchardt has ever experienced. Borchardt is program director for CASA of Tarrant County, an organization that serves abused and neglected children and helps sponsor Tarrant County Adoption Day. “The courthouse is full of people and every character you can imagine. Judges who are normally so stern and serious are glowing and laughing,” she says. “All the love in the room is overwhelming. I can’t even describe it.” Last year, Borchardt recalls seeing a little girl twirling in a ruffled pink dress and hugging her new parents. “She was Caucasian and her parents were African American,” Borchardt says. “She embraced them just as she would biological parents. She didn’t even know she didn’t come from them. It just really warmed my heart.” Borchardt explains that in most cases, a child has been placed with an adoptive family for at least six months and is monitored before the adoption is finalized. When National Adoption Day rolls around every November, it’s all about having fun and making memories as new families are officially formed. Children receive a stuffed animal, book, superhero cape and necklace engraved with their name and adoption date. Adoptive mothers receive a yellow rose and adoptive fathers receive the pen the judge uses to sign the adoption decree. Families then get their first official family photograph to take home. Leslie Barrows, an attorney with Southlake-based The Barrows Firm, describes Tarrant County Adoption Day as a combination of Christmas and Disney World. “It is magic in action because of how these children’s faces light up and because of the sparkle I see in the eyes of these new parents,” she says. “We are providing them with a far better life than they ever hoped for.” Barrows gravitated toward Tarrant County Adoption Day when she opened her law practice in 2006. Her firm volunteers to assist with counseling both the children and foster parents during the transition. “I have the honor of helping many children find forever homes where they can receive the love they so intensely crave,” says Barrows.

OPENING UP HOMES AND HEARTS

THE AKINS FAMILY

SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

Keller residents Randy and Vickie Akins share the same passion for helping children. So much so in fact, that they adopted two children on National Adoption Day. Their son, James, is 12 and their daughter, Kenna, is six.

NOV 17 • 39

“We went into it to make a difference in the life of a child in need,” says Vickie, who adopted James and Kenna as infants. The couple also has a 24-year-old biological son, Spencer. “Being a biological and an adoptive parent, there’s no difference between my kids. It’s like they were all born to me.” In addition to adopting two children, the Akins have also fostered 12 children in the past 12 years. They take in one child at a time, and each child lives with them for about a year. “I like to have them a long time and get to know them well,” says Vickie. “Some of them we still have a relationship with.” When a foster child moves on to a permanent home, Vickie admits it’s emotionally taxing. “It’s very hard when they leave. Foster parenting is not for the weak or faint-hearted,” she says. “Every time a foster child leaves, I try to be happy for them even though I hurt. I know in my heart I made a difference for the time I had them.” Eager to connect with other local foster/adopt families, the Akins founded Chosen Ones, an adoptive and foster-care ministry, in 2006. The nonprofit provides support groups, family events, mentor programs and even a warehouse, called the Just 4 U Closet, where foster/ adopt families can shop for free clothes, toys, baby equipment and furniture. Last year, more than 400 foster parents and more than 600 foster kids attended the nonprofit’s support groups, and more than 1,000 kids received needed items at the Just 4 U Closet. “There were no support groups available for families who did what we did,” says Vickie. “So we started a group and it morphed into this huge organization.”

40 • NOV 17

SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

A NEED FOR FAMILIES Texas children in the foster-care system need more loving families like the Akins. Tarrant County ranks No. 2 statewide for the highest number of confirmed child-abuse cases, according to the The Dallas Morning News. Harris County in Houston leads the state. “This is extremely alarming,” says Borchardt. “We have a smaller population than Dallas and Austin, but we’re No. 2 for confirmed abuse and neglect.” Community members are called to help. Approximately 250 abused and neglected children in Tarrant County are awaiting a volunteer advocate to help make a difference in their lives. CASA volunteers visit with the child and speak up for him or her in court. A volunteer is often the one constant in a child’s life amidst changes in foster placements, schools and caseworkers. (To determine if CASA is right for you, visit SpeakUpForAChild.org.) “The more community involvement and awareness, the better,” Borchardt says. “If families are able to open their homes for fostering and adoption, I encourage them to do so. We can never have enough families.” Vickie agrees that if families are interested in fostering or adopting a child, now’s the time to act. There has never been a greater need. “People don’t understand what a crisis we have here. We don’t have enough foster parents. Some kids have to sleep in shelters,” she says. “There is a lot involved with being a foster parent, but in the end, the rewards outweigh the costs.” As you gather with loved ones this holiday season, look around. Do you have some extra room in your home—and in your heart? “All kids need hope, a future and a chance. Their lives can be radically transformed just from structure and love,” Vickie says. “Whether you’re loving on a child for five weeks, five months, five years or forever, the impact you can have on that child is eternal.”

emember those classic movies where a long-abandoned dining room is brought to life with the opening of curtains and removal of dust-coated furniture covers? Even if you don’t, maybe that scene is reminiscent of the state of your own dining room. And we get it – that room is often reserved for special occasions, while everyday eating occurs at the breakfast table or even in front of the TV. We’re here to lure you back in. This time of year, dining rooms get more time to shine than usual. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year’s Eve, Kwanzaa – you name it, there are parties to throw and people to see. So open up those curtains (metaphorically or not) and put some life back in your dining room. Without further ado, here are some ways to update and spice up a space dedicated to feasting. IT’S LIT As with any room in the house, lighting can make or break a dining room. Beyond that, it can set the mood. Depending on what kind of atmosphere you are going for, there are plenty of options to get people passing plates in lustrous lighting. Chandeliers have been a longtime favorite above the table, and rightfully so. They are elegant and can effectively provide plenty of light. Here’s the fun part: chandeliers have evolved far beyond the traditional dangling-crystal look. No matter your interior design theme, there is definitely a

chandelier out there to match. Bright, bold colors or metal with double hoops, these suspended light fixtures can dress up a room or give a casual vibe. CHAIRS OF CHANGE Gone are the days of dining sets needing to match perfectly. Whether you are going for a rustic look or are just a whimsical designer, mismatched chairs are totally legal (and even trending). Hit Place the local antique stores for a 24 Oxford | $999,999 variety of chairs – anything goes. We do recommend keeping everything within the same color scheme. Otherwise, it starts looking a bit like a garage sale gone wild. If you have a white table, try to keep all of your eclectic seating the same color. If it is a natural wood, stay in that genre. The actual frame of the seat, however, can range far and wide. Have fun with it, but remember to reign yourself in once in a while. And if the idea of mismatched chairs is too far out of your comfort zone, try lively, bold colors PENDING | 1700 Bur Oak | $1,694,000 instead. You can definitely still make an exciting statement with a matching set. Benches are another fun way to breathe life back into a stuffy living room. Once upon a time, these were reserved for breakfast and picnic tables, but we are here to tell you they are making a comeback. And don’t assume that having a bench means not having a seatback. There are many styles of benches that have cushions, seatbacks and everything a normal dining room chair would have. his November, we are all thankful for our families and those little things called smartphones that help bridge the distance between relatives. And if there were ever one smartphone to rule them all, it would arguably be the iPhone. As 2017 has had its ample share of ups and downs, there is one remaining consistency: Apple’s ability to build anticipation and deliver on it. This was proved once again with the launch of the iPhone X, a smartphone with a starting price of $999. The iPhone X is one of the most expensive flagship phones ever made. However, the pricetag will likely not deter the masses. Apple has dominated the smartphone scene for many reasons, and faithful followers are always lined up around the corner for the latest release. The iPhone X (pronounced iPhone 10) has features that seem straight out of a Sci-Fi movie. For starters, the iPhone X can recognize you. This model has forgone any touch ID formerly used to access your phone and has jumped straight

to face recognition. That’s right, you don’t even have to lift a finger to get into this phone. We haven’t tested it on twins, but Apple is claiming that this is the most secure phone-locking technology out there. Another impressive step up is the camera. We know that there is a new version of iOS 11 and other techy things, but… you know, priorities. The iPhone X is taking selfies to a new level with something called Animoji. Yes, the front-facing camera can sense your surroundings and your face, giving it the ability to transform you into an animated emoji. Additionally, while iPhones have always had highquality cameras, this one is capable of sensing depth. It is bolted on horizontally, almost forcing you to shoot in landscape rather than portrait mode. Most importantly, this phone is all screen. The 5.8-inch screen only has a small lip at the top. Other than that, there is nothing to obstruct whatever you watch, read or doodle. For the first time ever, the iPhone is doing away with a home botton. This may be an adjustment at first, but we all moved forward without a headphone jack, remember?

veryone might be talking turkey this month, but not at IdleRye. Here at Deep Ellum’s newest hotspot, Polish and Cajun cuisine take center stage in the kitchen. The laid-back gastropub specializes in modern American fare with Polish influences and plenty of Louisiana flavors. From schnitzel and shrimp to house-made sausage with some tater tots thrown in for good measure, the menu offers an enticing assortment of comfort foods with a variety of cultural influences. Whether you’re turkey-ed out or you just want to try something different, IdleRye will reinvigorate your taste buds. Open for lunch, dinner and weekend brunch, IdleRye specializes in shareable plates, although there are plenty of just-for-

one dishes on the menu. If you don’t often eat Polish food, IdleRye’s pierogies are a must-try. Crispy potato dumplings are filled with fresh chives, cheddar and sour cream. With a delightfully crispy exterior and a buttery onion topping, these potato-stuffed pockets are downright euphoric. The Crispy Crabcake is another house favorite that will rock your world. A seven-ounce blend of jumbo lump and claw crab, spicy chili aioli, chives and onion straws come together for a dense cake chockfull of flavorful lumps of crabmeat. Grab a fork—you’ll want to partake in this cake. IdleRye also serves up the brunch of your dreams. Though there are many

local options to enjoy a bubbly mimosa with your omelet, the restaurant offers extra-special delights that are worth the drive. If it just isn’t brunch without a heaping plate of hotcakes, you’ll love the Buttermilk Vanilla Pancakes, which are served with a drizzle of maple-bacon-pecan-bourbon sauce. The Breakfast Board, a flight of house-cured breakfast meats, pickles and toast, is another satisfying way to kick off your Sunday Funday. If you happen to be in Deep Ellum catching a show, check out the pub’s late-night menu. We recommend stopping in for Spiral Sweet Potato Chips (served with chili-bacon glaze, blue cheese and chives) or Crispy Risotto Balls (breaded and lightly fried with Parmesan and roasted pepper sage vinaigrette) before taking your Uber back to the ’burbs. As for the drinks, if you love whiskey, you’re in good company at IdleRye. Whatever kind you’re into, you’ll find it here—from rye to American to sour mash. The pub’s drink menu features a swath of whiskey cocktails plus a handful of other libations inspired by the Prohibition era. We love a classic Old Fashioned, but we’re not afraid to mix it up. Plus, there’s something about the atmosphere at IdleRye that makes us want to get our Great Gatsby on. The What’s Your Fashion (bourbon or rye whiskey with simple syrup and bitters) will have you drinking like it’s 1920. The restaurant has a suburban heritage—the owners also operate The Table in Flower Mound—but it has its own unique look and feel. Designed with Edison-style lighting and plenty of galvanized metals and distressed woods, IdleRye’s vibe is more steampunk than suburbia. It has a bit of an edge, but it’s also welcoming. A secluded back courtyard, covered patio and intimate booths will invite you to kick back and stay awhile. Between the scratch-made dishes and local beer, wine and libations, you have plenty of reasons to get comfortable. With a handcrafted cocktail in your hand and a Crispy Schnitzel Sandwich on your plate (or a Gulf Shrimp Po’Boy if that’s more your thing), IdleRye is just the place to idle the day or night away. Planning your Thanksgiving menu can wait—at least until you polish off your pierogies.

Souffle Escargot with Puff Pastry

NEXT BISTRO 5003 Colleyville Boulevard Colleyville 682.325.4046 NextBistroTX.com

Over the summer, Next Bistro cooked up more than handmade Lobster Ravioli and Veal Porcini Bolognese—the cozy Colleyville eatery rolled out a fresh new menu and a new name to go along with it in celebration of its sixth anniversary. Formerly known as Next Wood Fired Bistro and Wine Bar, chef and owner, Ying Aikens, and her husband and wine program director, Tom, changed the name because it was too much of a mouthful. We agree. It’s better to save the words for ordering specialties such as Portabello Frites or Escargot with Puff Pastry. Plus, Tom says, “If you’re always thinking of your next meal, why wouldn’t you think of Next Bistro?” If you haven’t yet explored the restaurant’s dazzling new menu, you’re in for a treat. Dishes include foie gras, fresh seafood and game meats, flatbreads, rum cake and a host of other gourmet American, Mediterranean, French and Asian dishes. Chef Aikens particularly aims to delight by putting a Texas twist on classic dishes. Ever had chicken-fried lobster? Served alongside spinach and maque corn choux (a colorful Cajun side dish containing corn, green bell pepper and onion), it’s a culinary victory. For lunch, Next Bistro offers elevated versions of burgers, paninis and sandwiches (all served with fries or house-made chips), along with a satisfying variety of soups and salads. If you want something a little more substantial for your mid-day meal, the Cedar Plank Sushi-Grade Salmon (served with lemon-caper sauce) or Next’s Meatloaf (Texas Kobe beef with Marsala mushroom sauce) will fuel you right up. Next Bistro particularly shines at dinner. Here, you can settle in for date night and indulge in foods from across the globe while sipping wines and spirits from the restaurant’s award-winning list. Some of the standouts include Slow-Braised Lamb Osso Bucco in red wine reduction and New Zealand Elk Tenderloin with blueberry gastrique. Be sure to sample a few of the shareable sides, such as Next’s Macaroni & Cheese or Roasted Brussels Sprouts. For those extra-special celebrations, the restaurant offers a $450 Louis XIII three-course French wine dinner complete with a toast to Louis XIII at the finale. The next one is November 13, so go forth and celebrate like royalty. Or, just dine like a regular citizen. Next Bistro offers plenty of fresh flavors and innovative dishes to get excited about.

Southlake household name is changing. Grayson Allen Fine Jewelers is under a new management structure and changing its moniker to The Gatehouse Fine Jewelers. Amidst the transition, there are two key things that haven’t changed: The local leader in custom jewelry will still offer extraordinary designs to the community and will make a positive difference in the process. In fact, the inventory is tripling, so customers will have a more extensive selection to choose from. As longtime owners Keary and Patty Turner looked for strategic partners to take Grayson Allen Fine Jewelers to the next level of impact in the community and approached current inves-

tors Matt and Lisa Rose, and Jackie and Delisa Read. The group represents more than three decades of experience in the jewelry business. The Turners not only wanted to expand their business, but to intentionally leverage their blessings to make a meaningful difference where they live. “It’s always been in our mission statement to give back and to support our community,” Patty Turner says. “And that’s not changing moving forward, it’s just being magnified.” With this new ownership structure, the owners will contribute 50 percent of the profits directly to The Gatehouse. The local nonprofit is a living community, serving North Texas women who are ready to end cycles of abuse and poverty. The Gatehouse gives these women a chance to build new lives for themselves and their children. “Grayson Allen is not closing, it’s just getting better,” new part owner Jackie Read says. “We’re continuing business, going onto the next step and bringing it to a new level – not only in business, but in our giving.” For the Turners, this is a creative way to position the store for the future and to continue their tradition of giving back to the community. For the Reads, this is an intentional plan to build on their lifetime of experience in the jewelry business, while making a difference for women and children who need a hand up out of crisis. And for the Roses, it is another building block to sustain

SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

The Gatehouse mission of providing a place and program for lifelong change, for those who need it most. “We exist to give women and children in crisis an opportunity for permanent change,” The Gatehouse founder and president Lisa Rose says. “This business and partnership allows us to give back to our community in a lasting, meaningful way.” As Grayson Allen Fine Jewelers transforms into The Gatehouse Fine Jewelers, you’ll receive the same level of personalized service from the same dedicated staff. Moving forward, you will enjoy an even larger selection of the finest jewelry, created by designers both in-house and from around the world. Best of all, your purchases at The Gatehouse Fine Jewelers will make a practical and lasting difference in the lives of your neighbors who need help toward making permanent change. Shop to make a difference!

It’s always been in our mission statement to give back and to support our community “We couldn’t be happier to be a partner in providing not only a wonderful shopping experience for our community, but a shopping experience that offers a practical hand up to approximately 200 women and kids annually who work diligently to build new lives,” Rose adds. “Shopping couldn’t get any better.” In fact, if you are looking for a good excuse to shop now, The Gatehouse Fine Jeweler’s staff is ready to assist you in finding that perfect holiday gift for your someone special. The Gatehouse Fine Jewelers has plenty of gifts for men as well as women. No matter who you are buying for, the store has gift items that will last a lifetime. This includes work from the following designers: Jude Francis, Armenta, Kurtulan, Catherine Ryder, Read Wilson, Beverly K, Samira, William Henry, Rebecca, Gabriel & Co, Dilamani, Bavna and Uneek. Three families coming together as part owners, a new name and tons of new inventory may seem like a lot to keep up with, but it was a match made in heaven. In fact, Delisa Read describes the decision to partner with Gatehouse Fine Jewelers as “Spirit-led.” Her

husband, Jackie, echoed this statement by saying a great deal of prayer went into it. The couple is a perfect fit as they bring over 30 years of jewelry experience to the table. Enter Matt and Lisa Rose, a couple that has dedicated their time to serving the communities around them, and everything starts to come together. The Turners could not have been more intentional in their selection of partners.

HOW LOCAL NONPROFIT HOUSE OF SHINE HELPS OTHERS FORGE PURPOSEFUL LIVES

E

ver heard the phrase “good is the enemy of great?” Dr. Claudia Beeny couldn’t agree with it more wholeheartedly. Helping women, children and teachers craft their best lives is what inspired her to start her Westlake-based nonprofit, House of Shine. Through workshops and leadership programs, she helps community members of all ages understand how to best use their unique talents and gifts. OUR MISSION IS TO: power the planet with shine. Imagine how bright the world would be if everyone was living their purpose. We want our content made available to every woman, child and teacher so that young people can grow up with the selfknowledge, confidence and tools to forge fulfilling paths for themselves. HOUSE OF SHINE GOT ITS NAME AS: a way to describe the excellence we hope to bring out in people. Stars shine, and things that shine usually stand out. So the word conjured up the perfect image of why we were working so hard to develop people. The deeper we got into helping people identify their own excellence, the more we realized we could also use the word “shine” as an acronym. Now the method we use for unearthing people’s shine is deep exploration into the strengths, hobbies, interests, needs and experiences of our participants. It was a happy mistake, but one that has been instrumental in helping us explain what we do. I LOVE THAT MY JOB: helps people forge a path for their own lives that is as fulfilling to them as mine is to me. I love engaging women, children and teachers in our programs and curriculum. It allows me to use my innate talents and strengths—one of the guiding principles we teach to living your purpose. I am creative by nature and a teacher at my core, so spending days creating engaging content and then teaching it to people who attend our workshops is the perfect fit for me. THE BEAUTY OF OUR WORK IS THAT WE: focus on what is right with people. We assume every person has a set of talents and strengths, and we also assume that the reverse is true of people—that

each of us has a set of weaknesses and insecurities. So, we normalize the unflattering stuff through storytelling and laughter, and then get busy making commitments to ourselves about how we might get incrementally closer to living to our fullest potential. A TYPICAL DAY FOR ME INCLUDES: some combination of either teaching and/or creating. Today I spent a quiet morning in my office reading and preparing for an upcoming workshop for local business leaders. At noon, I had a meeting to discuss preliminary plans for a summer camp experience we will offer to mothers and daughters next summer. Immediately after that, I co-taught a group of seniors in high school how to use our life maps to help them write winning college essays. And then, I finished the workday joining forces with a local merchant who is helping us co-sponsor an event that will get more women out enjoying nature. A PROUD MOMENT FOR ME WAS WHEN: I was awarded the Legacy of Women award through Safe Haven for my ongoing commitment to education. That was particularly meaningful because of the long list of esteemed women whose company I am keeping. Also, we don’t often stop to think about how the many small things we do along the way eventually add up to something notable. That award helped me see how 25 years of working in education is making a real difference. OUR ORGANIZATION NEEDS: increased awareness and interest on the part of community members. Parents and teachers who are curious about all the ways we are positively influencing education should reach out and let us tell you more. Donations and sponsorships are also helpful in allowing us to provide programming to women, children and teachers in even greater numbers.

Say ‘Ahh’ UNWIND IN NOOSA, THE RELAXATION CAPITAL OF AUSTRALIA

D

oes the impending holiday hubbub have you feeling a little frenzied? Take a jaunt to the land Down Under, specifically to Noosa, the city that puts the “ahh” in Australia. The sparkling destination located in the Sunshine Coast region of Queensland is known as the relaxation capital of Australia. Here, locals and tourists alike take time to savor their surroundings, whether they’re watching for whales or admiring wildflowers. If you’re thinking of planning a trip to Australia, now’s an ideal time—the weather is just warming up as summer arrives. Jet away for a spell and return feeling completely renewed.

Contemplate Your Escape If your vacations are typically overbooked or over-programmed, you’re probably eager to unplug

for a bit. Noosa has your need for downtime covered—all you have to do is choose your relaxation preference. You could pamper yourself at one of the city’s many day spas, discover your Zen in a beachside yoga session, hit the links at a world-class golf course, or just take in the lush tropical rainforests and crystalline beaches. Noosa’s picture-perfect setting makes it easy to find your inner bliss, whether you embark on an activity or prefer to do nothing at all. Situated on an idyllic stretch of coast, Noosa is so naturally beautiful that you won’t need any filters when sharing your vacation photos. As one of only two Everglades systems on the planet (the other is in Florida), the region is home to exceptional flora and fauna. If you’re a bird-watcher, you’ve found your paradise. Nearly half of Australia’s bird species resides within the Noosa Everglades, so bring your binoculars. You might also catch a glimpse of one of the 700 native creatures that call the Sunshine Coast home, from whales and dolphins to butterflies and marsupials. If you’re lucky, you may even see some koalas in their natural habitat. VisitNoosa.com.au

Get Comfortable When you travel to Noosa, the accommodations are as varied as the landscape. You could settle in at a luxury bed and breakfast, relax in the serenity of a beachfront cottage or enjoy the pristine water views from a lake-house retreat. If the latter sounds like your cup of tea, plan your stay at Eumarella Shores, a stunning eco-conscious retreat nestled on the banks of the breathtaking Lake Weyba. Take your pick from a selection of individually themed lake houses on the water’s edge, or venture into the native bush garden for a secluded garden lake house with sweeping lake views. Either way, you’ll feel completely relaxed sipping a glass of wine on the veranda, taking it all in. With summer just unfolding in Australia, it’s the perfect season to dive into Lake Weyba and explore its diverse waterscapes and creeks. Hop in a complimentary kayak or canoe, or go for a leisurely swim beneath a canopy of trees. Prefer to meander on land? Take a stroll along the pristine beaches of Noosa National Park or discover some local fare at the nearby Noosa Farmers Market. Situated among the area’s fragrant gum trees, the market is open every Sunday and showcases some of the region’s freshest produce. Bring your discoveries back to your Australian abode to prepare a freshly made feast—all accommodations include a fully equipped kitchen. EumarellaShores. com.au, NoosaFarmersMarket.com.au

Eat Like an Aussie Want to enjoy a slice of paradise with your meal? In Noosa, it’s easy to do. Plenty of waterfront dining options abound, so you don’t have to miss a moment of the view. The tables on the terrace at Rickys River Bar and Restaurant are among the best in Noosa. Pull up to the restaurant via ferry, water taxi or gondola and experience some of the city’s finest Mediterranean-inspired dishes, such as salt-cod croquettes or flash-fried local prawns. The menu changes seasonally and features fresh local produce, so you’ll get to enjoy all the season’s best flavors. For a real memory-maker, don’t miss the restaurant’s six-course tasting menu with matching wines. Rickys.com.au Sails is another beachfront restaurant serving up views as good as the food. Stop in for an elegant yet unstuffy lunch of salt-and-pepper duck with kimchi and blood-plum sauce or Mooloolaba king prawns in a yellow curry sauce. The best tables are situated on the shaded terrace, but with an entirely open restaurant, it’s impossible not to know you’re dining beside the sea. Enjoy a glass from Sails’ award-winning wine list and savor the experience. SailsNoosa.com.au

BE FO RE “After two months, I met my weight loss goal, and I have kept the weight off!”

Vivian lost 30 pounds!†

I was used to being fit for most of my life, but after giving birth to my daughter, I realized I needed to shed some serious pounds. I saw my weight fluctuate over the course of three years. After three years you can’t blame the weight on the baby anymore. I did it all- hired personal trainers, doing diet after diet after diet. Nothing seemed to work for me. After a short period of time, the weight would return with a vengeance. After seeing a Medi-Weightloss® commercial I decided to give it a shot. I mean, what did I have lose? 26lbs, that’s what! I lost it, and I don’t miss it at all! Now my daughter barely recognizes me in old photos. I lost 6.5lbs in the first week. There was a different look in my eye this time around. I was a woman on a mission. After two months, I met my weight loss goal, and I have kept the weight off! The Medi-Weightloss® program showed me where I was going wrong in the past, and they helped me every step of the way. I got online support, and delicious, easy-to-make recipes, and tips for eating out. Never before have I experienced such personable people who wanted me to succeed. Now, I am back in full force.
