Sound the Bells! A few months ago, everyone in our office received yellow smiley-face bells for our desks. They’re cheerful and fun, and in the event of exciting news, we give them a celebratory ding, ding, ding! We don’t sound the bells for just anything; we save them for the big stuff. And this month, we have something monumental to celebrate: Southlake Style’s first-ever women’s luncheon. The event, “Harnessing Your Potential (and Your Kids’ Too!),” is planned for Friday, October 14 at The Marq. Any woman—executive, business owner, volunteer, mom or sister—who can use a jolt of inspiration in her life is welcome to attend. Former Facebook executive, Metroplex mom and all-around phenomenal female Kim Garrett is our keynote speaker. She’ll share stories of resilience and perseverance in life, and she’ll also offer her take on modern parenting. Garrett’s general thoughts on raising kids? Do less. Read more about her refreshing perspective on life and motherhood in our feature on page 24. Ladies: Grab your colleagues and girlfriends and reserve your seats for the upcoming luncheon at SouthlakeStyle.com. You won’t want to miss it! This issue is packed with women achieving feats worthy of a bell ring. Take Stephanie Hays, for example. This Southlake mom and financial executive is paving the way for millennial women. Hays, who hasn’t yet turned 30, advocates for her industry, mentors young women and even worked to create her employer’s first maternity leave policy. That’s something every working mom can appreciate—me included. See her story on page 31, and get to know other exceptional leaders in our annual Women in Business section. Behind every great woman is … sometimes a whole gaggle of girlfriends. We caught up with the fun-loving, tight-knit authors of “Red Thong Strong” on page 66 to chat about the power of friendships. These local ladies want women to appreciate and value life-changing, lasting friendships. For them, a red thong isn’t just an undergarment; it represents a bond between gal pals. And, because it’s October, we sprinkle seasonal delights throughout the pages. Halloween! Oktoberfest! Fall fashion! These are also worthy of a ding, ding, ding. Sound the bells! Happy reading,

THE MALIBU SESSIONS COLBIE CAILLAT OCTOBER 7

Easy, Breezy Colbie Two-time Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Colbie Caillat brings a little sunshine and warmth to your fall with the release of her new album “The Malibu Sessions.” This is her first release under her own label—PlummyLou and RED Distribution—a move she made to gain complete control over the writing, performing and production process. Of the album she said, “I’ve always been inspired by classic rock from the 1970s and how records were made at that time. There’s a lot of Paul Simon, Fleetwood Mac and Tom Petty influences in these songs.”

THE MAGNOLIA STORY CHIP AND JOANNA GAINES OCTOBER 18

A Boy and his Alien High school friendships have their ups and downs as it always takes time getting to know new people. For instance, it is always nice to know what planet your pals are from. Max Steel is a movie about two budding heroes—16-year-old Max McGrath (Ben Winchell) and his alien companion—who must combine their powers for good as they work together to uncover the mysteries of what is threatening their world. The film is inspired by one of Mattel’s bestselling toys, Max Steel.

Pursuing a criminal in the 21st century is hard, but throw in two time machines and time-traveling bureaucratic red tape, and you’ve got the makings of NBC’s new fall series “Timeless.” A mishmash team, comprised of a scientist, soldier and history professor, must travel through time to stop a rogue time traveler (Goran Višnjic of “ER”) from destroying America by changing its past. However, the team must halt his actions without changing the past themselves. Shawn Ryan (“The Shield”) and Eric Kripke (“Revolution”) co-write and executive produce the action-adventure series starring Abigail Spencer (“True Detective”), Matt Lanter (“90210”) and Malcolm Barrett (“The Hurt Locker”).

“ONCE UPON A TIME” SHOW RAISED FUNDS FOR CMS STUDENT Last month, the fundraiser “Once Upon a Time: To Ella, With Love, From Broadway,” was held at the Irving Arts Center to benefit 13-year-old Ella Weaver, a Carroll Middle School student who is battling Stage 3 Lymphoma. The show was produced in conjunction with Lyric Stage and the Acting Studio. “We expect to present a check to the Weaver family for between $15,000 and $20,000,” said Sarah Close, one of the event organizers. “This includes fundraising that the Acting Studio along with its students, families and community completed throughout the summer through a variety of activities.” The evening included a catered reception and silent auction followed by the show. The host for the evening was Chad McCoy, a 20-year CISD theater teacher. The evening closed with a rendition of “Over the Rainbow,” chosen by Ella.

SOUTHLAKE STUDENTS JOINED PAINT THE CHANGE MOVEMENT As Dragons embarked on a new school year, one group of Carroll students wanted to make sure that youth around the world have the same privilege. Over the summer, 15 Carroll students joined the Paint the Change campaign, a worldwide street art movement in support of educational rights. Partnering with nationally renowned Southlake artist, Deanna Kienast, the group aims to make a change through artistic expression. Together, they worked with paintbrushes and plenty of colors to create a piece that would represent the privilege of education. The group hopes to make their artwork a traveling exhibition, putting it on display at various Southlake destinations and campuses.

FORMER DRAGON KICKER JAKE OLDROYD STANDS OUT AT BYU With just eight seconds to go, Brigham Young University’s football team only needed a field goal to win the game. That’s when a former Dragon stepped in. Jake Oldroyd, a freshman for the Cougars, in his first-ever college outing, hit a 33-yard field goal to defeat Arizona in Week 1. We caught up with the Carroll alumnus to chat about how he’s doing so far. See our Q&A at SouthlakeStyle.com. LAUGHS, GOOD TIMES FLOWED AT CARROLL THEATRE’S URINETOWN Carroll Theatre entertained crowds with plenty of humor at its fall production, URINETOWN: The Musical. Fresh off a stellar 2015-16 season with 23 nominations and seven awards, Dragon Drama didn’t disappoint with light satire, engaging scores and parodies of traditional musicals. URINETOWN delivered both interesting layers and depth as well as light-hearted fun. Nominated for an impressive 10 Tony Awards, it won for Best Book, Score and Direction. It also won the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best Musical.

COMMUNITY SHOWED LOVE, SUPPORT FOR YOUNG WESTLAKE CANCER PATIENT Sawyer Davidson is a 7-year-old fighting cancer… but he’s not battling alone. In August, about 200 people gathered at White’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Southlake to let him know that even though he’s away for treatment, he’s not forgotten. During the event, attendees brought cards and posters for Sawyer and the group released hundreds of blue balloons. In 2015, Sawyer was diagnosed with a brain tumor caused from medulloblastoma, an aggressive form of cancer. Surgery removed the tumor but he relapsed in April. Since then he has received weeks of radiation, chemotherapy and other treatments to combat this disease. Currently, Sawyer is out of the state receiving immunotherapy.

EVEXIAS MEDICAL CENTERS Two entrepreneurs met, love blossomed and a medical wellness revolution was born

W

hen Terri Suresh and Dan DeNeui met on a flight from Dallas to Phoenix in 2009, little did they know that their personal and professional lives were about to change forever. As the two prepare to expand their medical wellness business, EVEXIAS Medical Centers® (formerly Hormonal Health, Wellness & Aesthetic centers) into Dallas, we asked the Southlake couple to share their story. A lot has changed since that decisive flight seven years ago. Today, the Southlake couple is at the forefront of a medical wellness revolution that turns the traditional approach to western medicine on its ear. It all began at 2 o’clock one morning while Terri was working her third night shift in a row as an emergency room nurse practitioner. As she explains, “After several years working in emergency care and internal medicine, I became disenchanted with our continual band-aiding of symptoms and the way that western medicine approaches health and wellness.” At that point, Terri threw her stake in the sand. She decided then and there to open a women’s wellness center. “It was so heartbreaking to see so many people desperate for answers, and all we were doing was writing more prescriptions. From a sick-care perspective, we were only paying attention to patients when they were sick. Nobody was grinding into how to help people stay well, become well and how to prevent disease,” Terri says. Shortly after Terri opened her Southlake women’s clinic, patients started asking her about hormone pellet therapy. “When I first opened the Hormonal Health and Wellness clinic, I was using hormone modalities in the forms of creams and patches. Then patients kept bringing up pellet therapy and specifically named a local doctor who offered the therapy,” Terri says. “He and I ended up talking extensively about the therapy and its effectiveness, which led me to Arizona to train with the pioneer of hormone pellet therapy Dr. Gino Tutera.” Which brings us back to that flight from Dallas to Phoenix. Dan knew he met someone special the first moment he laid eyes on Terri.

20 • OCT 16

As he explains, “This is a true story, as we first saw each other in the airplane aisle, I didn’t know who she was, but I knew that our chance meeting was extremely significant. I just felt it in my gut. It was one of those spiritual ‘aha’ moments.” It wasn’t long before the two realized that they have walked very similar lives, even before they knew each other, and they fell in love. The two also share common ground when it comes to their faith; they’re members of Gateway Church in Southlake. Following the Arizona trip, Terri began transitioning her patients from patches and creams to pellet therapy. As she explains, “The pellet therapy modality is far superior when done properly, and the demand for it just exploded due to those results.” Initially, Terri was operating her wellness clinic out of an 8x10 executive office suite in Southlake. She needed help with business structure and strategy, and Dan agreed to collaborate with her on the operation of the clinic. In business, as in love, the two entrepreneurs found a special synergy with one another. “The key part is her brain processes information very much like my brain processes information – but in two different ways,” Dan says. “Her gift is on the medical side, research and delivering the best level of patient care, and my gift is for growing businesses.”

SouthlakeStyle.com

P R O M OT I O N

That synergy paid off, and the practice grew rapidly. Terri was treating hundreds of patients with hormone pellet therapy, as well as medical cosmetic and aesthetic treatments. The business has since expanded and offers many additional life changing, evidence-based, medical therapies and technologies for women and men. Until 2014, Terri and Dan were also partners in a successful pellet training company, with Terri training hundreds of practitioners nationwide and Dan spearheading the company’s national expansion and branding. Recently, the couple (who married in 2015) decided it was time to rebrand the health and wellness business. “We do so much more than hormone pellet therapy and the practice is no longer geared solely to women. More men are becoming interested in wellness, especially as the effectiveness of testosterone pellet therapy has become known,” Terri says. They chose the name EVEXIAS, which is a Greek word meaning “much wellness” or “exuberance about wellness.” Today, EVEXIAS Medical Centers operates out of two locations in Southlake and Rockwall, with a Dallas location coming in 2017. Grit and Gumption FORMER FACEBOOK EXECUTIVE AND METROPLEX MOM KIM GARRETT SHOWS OTHERS THE POWER OF FORGING THEIR OWN PATHS IN LIFE— NO MATTER THEIR BACKGROUNDS. BY AUDREY SELLERS

24 • OCT 16

S

outhlake moms: Kim Garrett is probably a lot like you. She hustles to get her two sons out the door each morning for school. She finds Zen at yoga classes. She loves to cook for her family (and admits she enjoys a juicy burger or some fried chicken every now and then). However, when it comes to social media, Garrett knows Facebook in a much different capacity. While you might scan your newsfeed throughout the day, Garrett has a more personal experience with the platform—she worked for Facebook for four years.

She walked the halls at headquarters with Mark Zuckerberg and powwowed with Sheryl Sandberg. Oh, and Garrett retired from the social networking giant in 2011 as a multimillionaire. Now, this North Dallas mom wants to inspire others with her tales of perseverance and modern parenting. Garrett is the keynote speaker at Southlake Style’s inaugural women’s luncheon later this month: Harnessing Your Potential (and Your Kids’ Too!). For details on the upcoming event, visit SouthlakeStyle.com. RISING ABOVE ADVERSITY Garrett is the definition of a self-made success. Before she landed her role at Facebook, Garrett experienced an upbringing that was far from conventional. She was born to unwed drug addicts and originally named Electra Zane. When Garrett was a toddler, her grandmother, a Fort Worth bartender, swooped in to care for her and legally changed her name to Kimberly. From then on, Kimberly’s childhood consisted of hanging out with her grandmother at the bar, sipping Shirley Temples and perfecting her pool and dart skills until closing time at 2 a.m. Garrett’s eccentric upbringing didn’t hinder her one bit; in fact, it propelled her to achieve. As a student at Eastern Hills High School in Fort Worth, Garrett was a member of the student council, drill team and tennis team and was even named homecoming queen one year. In 2015, Garrett received Distinguished Alumnus Honors from her alma mater, joining the ranks of esteemed graduates such as Fort Worth mayor and U.S. Congresswoman Kay Granger and former NFL star Byron Chamberlain. “It sounds silly because it’s my high school, but it was one of my proudest moments,” says Garrett. “I have a picture of my nine-year-old and me on the football field [being honored]. You can tell he’s so proud of me!” After high school, Garrett attended Tyler Junior College for a year and then joined

Quick Q&A with Kim What would you do with an extra hour in your day? Walk or do yoga. I love being outside. Even if I have a glass of wine, I go for a long walk.

Surprising fact about you? I hate shopping. I literally wear the same jeans all the time. Also, I’d rather sit outside a Starbucks and have a conversation with homeless people than sit with socialites at a fancy dinner. I’m more comfortable just being in the nitty gritty. Cook or dine out? We go out to eat a lot, but I love to cook! I cook all the fattening stuff: fried chicken, okra, biscuits and gravy. Favorite guilty pleasure? I love trying new foods. I recently had a great burger at Knife Dallas. It was the best burger I’ve had in my whole life. I thought about that stupid burger for a week. Ultimate vacation spot? Carmel, California. We’re building a vacation house there now. It’s nice because you get mountains and the ocean. It’s my favorite place in the world. OCT 16 • 25

the job force, first leasing apartments and then handling suites for the Dallas Cowboys. From there, she advanced up the ranks at Riddell Co. and eventually landed a gig as national sales director for Clear Channel Radio. Along the way, Garrett got married and started a family with her husband, Danny, to whom she’s been married for nearly 20 years. Life was good for Garrett. She was working at home in a job she loved. She had a new baby in the family, Jack, now age 10. (The Garretts’ oldest son is 15-year-old Carson.) Little did she know that things were about to go from good to off-the-charts amazing.

See Kim Garrett at Southlake Style’s inaugural women’s luncheon: Harnessing Your Potential (and Your Kids’ Too!). Planned for October 14 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at The Marq, this thought-provoking, inspirational event will empower all women: executives, business owners, mothers and daughters. THE JOB OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFETIME Garrett wasn’t looking for a new job when her life intersected with Facebook. In 2007, the relatively unknown company was just getting off the ground and social media was picking up steam. But when Garrett got a call from the California company about starting a Dallas office, she was intrigued. She had no digital experience and went through 13 interviews to get the job, but Garrett took a leap of faith. “When I looked at Facebook, I just knew it would be a game changer,” she says. The beginning was indeed humble (Garrett’s first Facebook business card listed her home address), but her career—and Facebook itself—quickly catapulted to new levels. Garrett worked as a brand ambassador, talking to CEOs and CMOs and essentially opening the central region for Facebook. She managed every brand and every client—from Coors in Colorado to Dell in Austin, HP in Houston, and Dr Pepper and Yum Brands locally. “Back then, there wasn’t social media,” she says. “People were just curious about what we were doing.” Garrett was based in Dallas, but her work often took her to Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park, California, a place that’s just as awe-inspiring as you might imagine. Garrett recalls sitting in a room bustling with people with Ph.D.s who spoke multiple languages and played multiple instruments. Everybody brought impressive talents to the table, but all egos got checked at the door. “At some places you see people jockeying for positions. There was none of that at Facebook,” she says. “Everyone was focused on working hard.” Perhaps it was the nature of their work; perhaps it was the leadership. Though Garrett’s interaction with CEO Mark Zuckerberg (“Zuck,” as she calls him) was limited, she recalls feeling in awe anytime she was around him. SouthlakeStyle.com

“Working for Mark was humbling because he’s such a visionary,” says Garrett. “And he was so young!” And then came Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s chief operating officer who later went on to start Leanin.org and was named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential women in the world in 2012. Garrett had worked at Facebook for about a year when Sandberg joined. She says it was refreshing to work alongside a fellow mom who was similar in age. Plus, Garrett says, Sandberg was just all-around amazing. “She’s so incredibly smart, just wicked smart,” says Garrett. “She was great at motivating and challenging us. But even though she was approachable, I never felt too comfortable around her, which is a good boss. I always felt I had more work to do and more to learn.” During her time at Facebook, Garrett helped build the brand and define its social strategy, ultimately helping shape it into one of the most influential social media sites in the world. She retired in 2011 for logistical reasons: The tax bill from her prenegotiated stock options were too high. So Garrett cashed in her company stock for an eight-figure payday. Does she miss her job? Sometimes. But mostly she’s just grateful for the wisdom she gained from it. “A little of me wishes I had stayed. It was such a good job,” says Garrett. “It changed the way I look at the world. I traveled so much and worked with so many people from different cultures. It opened my eyes to everything.” KEEPING IT REAL AT HOME These days, Garrett is fully entrenched in family life: homework, carpool, and with two sons, plenty of football. After she gets her children off to school in the morning, Garrett recharges with yoga, weights and an occasional run. On the weekends, the family spends time at their ranch about 45 minutes outside Dallas. Though Garrett could provide anything for her children, she wants to instill a sense of teamwork, not entitlement. Her sons don’t get allowances; everyone is simply expected to pull their own weight. “It’s okay that other people give allowances, but in our little family, we do things as a team,” Garrett says. “My husband does the laundry and I cook. The boys have chores and feed the dogs. I don’t feel like I should have to pay them.” When Garrett sees clothes, backpacks or general boy stuff strewn through the house, she refrains from picking it up. Instead, she feels a sense of pride when her kids clean up after themselves. “I’ve seen my 15-year-old slip a little bit and then come out stronger on the other side,” Garrett says. “It’s so rewarding to see that. I think, ‘They’re going to be okay.’ You just have to let kids figure stuff out on their own sometimes.” Her general parenting approach? Do less. “Humans are wired to give their kids a better life than they had. But sometimes a better life is, like, ridiculous,” she says, with a laugh. “Give them structure, let them know you love them and that’s it.” Garrett expands on her views on life and parenting in her book, “Roll With It: Living, Working and Parenting by the Seat of Your Pants.” Writing a book is something Garrett always wanted to cross off her bucket list, and she’s happy her future grandchildren and great-grandchildren will have a piece of family history in the book. She also hopes other moms will get a good laugh from it and maybe even gain the courage to live a more authentic life. “We all have a story. I wish people would embrace what makes them unique instead of trying to paint a perfect life,” says Garrett. “If people would stop judging each other, it would be such a beautiful world.” Southlake STYLE Magazine

M STEPHANIE HAYS AMBITIOUSLY ADVANCES IN HER CAREER WHILE STILL KEEPING HER FAMILY AND COMMUNITY AT THE FOREFRONT. by Sydni Ellis

ost people dread financial planning. But for Southlake mom Stephanie Hays, it’s her passion and her livelihood. As a senior financial representative for Principal Financial Group, a global financial investment company, Hays’ career revolves around providing a financial framework for her clients. Though the financial industry is largely male-dominated, Hays doesn’t let it deter her. In fact, she scoffs at the notion of a glass ceiling and meets any career challenge head on. She has won several awards and advocated for the financial industry in Washington, D.C.— and she has yet to celebrate her 30th birthday. Get to know this local working mom of two young sons who isn’t afraid to pursue her dream—and shake up antiquated perceptions in the meantime.

EXCITING BEGINNINGS Hays grew up in Arlington and received her bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Texas at Arlington. Even though her education kept her busy—she graduated magna cum laude and was a member of the honors college and Goolsby Leadership Academy—Hays still found time to gain industry experience. “The spring of my junior year in college, I took my Series 7 [a test that gives stockbrokers license to trade], Series 66 [a test that qualifies candidates as securities agents and investment adviser representatives], five finals and got married all in a four-week period,” Hays says. “I lived at the library on Red Bull and Funyuns!” In 2011, Hays began working at Principal and learned that she and her husband, Michael, were expecting their first child, James. They decided to move to Southlake where James could “have the best education and grow up in a family-oriented community,” she explains. In 2013, when James was two weeks old, they signed papers to start building their home in Southlake. Only two weeks after moving in, they learned they were pregnant with their second son, Kade. Life at home was busy with a young child and one on the way, but Hays charged ahead in her career. During her first years at Principal, Hays had 70-hour workweeks and accepted every additional training opportunity that came her way. “I admire the passion Stephanie has in every aspect of her life and her relentless drive to be a good person and make a difference

in the world,” says her husband, Michael. “She gives fully to all her commitments without having to take from another.” During her first year at Principal, Hays received the National New Advisor Award, an achievement that recognizes the top-performing advisor of all experienced recruits across the country. “The extraordinary part of winning this award is that I was pregnant for half the qualifying year,” explains Hays. “I was the youngest female advisor and first pregnant woman to receive this award. I was unable to attend the recognition meeting in Los Angeles because I was in the hospital delivering James.” Hays has also earned Club Level Recognition, has received the Noel Blaas Award for outstanding achievement, and has qualified for the Million Dollar Round Table since she was 21. SUCCESS IS (NOT) MEASURED BY THE NUMBERS Financial knowledge is indeed an asset—why else would we hire professionals to do our taxes, manage our accounts or give us investing advice? Even so, Hays recognizes that her job is more than financial prowess; it’s caring for people. “My role at the end of the day is to make a difference,” Hays explains. “Often, the most challenging part of our lives are financial issues, and my job is to take the complicated and make it easy to understand.” Out of 1,500 advisors, Hays was chosen among just 10 to serve on the Agent Advisory Council. This council is the liaison between the field and home office, discussing challenges, successes and how the company can enhance their service. In May, Hays traveled to Washington, D.C., with the council to advocate for the financial industry as a whole. “Advisors do not succeed if they are in this business to earn commissions,” she says. “Advisors should seek to make real differences, and I was there to represent advisors everywhere who are working to change people’s lives.” Even though she works in the financial industry, Hays does not measure her success by the numbers. She believes that her biggest success in life is that she has been happily married for eight years and has been blessed with two children. Success in her career comes from loving what she does. “The income is a byproduct,” she says. “I love what I do and would still do it if I won the lottery. I can provide for my family, and more importantly, I have a lot of flexibility where I can be there for my family anytime I need to be.” Principal recently commemorated its 10th anniversary as an Ethisphere’s World’s Most Ethical Company, which shows the company cares about others, too. “I believe in what I do, and I believe in my company,” says Hays. “Our culture is like none that I have ever seen. It’s one thing for a company to say they want the best; it’s another to act on it.”

When she is not working or spending time with her family, Hays volunteers with GRACE, a local nonprofit that provides assistance to people in crisis. She has a jam-packed schedule with her career and caring for her 3-year-old and 1-year-old, but Hays “felt deep down this is something I needed to do for my community and be a role model for my family,” she says. Hays started by securing items for a raffle at the GRACE Gala and then accepted a position on the GRACE Board of Directors. “We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Stephanie to our team as a new member of the Board of Directors,” says Shonda Schaffer, executive director at GRACE. “We take our responsibility for stewarding God’s blessings very seriously and recruit leaders who exemplify excellence and commitment. Stephanie has already made a significant impact on our mission, and ultimately the families who need support and guidance through crisis.” PAVING THE WAY FOR WOMEN Hays is working to change the conversation about millennials and women in the workplace. For example, her feedback prompted discussions to build a maternity leave policy. She also mentors students, sits in on lectures and personally sponsors events at UT Arlington. And she doesn’t let critics get her down. “I’ve been told several times that I need to have silver hair in this industry to be respected,” she says. “I’ve also been told that men won’t listen to a female on how to manage their finances. I just have to laugh. I work hard and I feel that my recommendations make an impact in a client’s life. I don’t take that responsibility lightly.”

33

“ My role at the end of the day is to make a difference.”,

34 34

“ believe in what do, and believe in my company .”

As far as her clients are concerned, Hays does not believe that being a young woman puts her at a disadvantage. “I have energy to keep up with the ever-changing, fast-paced world of finance, I embrace change and I love to learn,” she says. “Every client is a brand-new challenge.” How can other women follow Hays’ example? It’s simple: Be heard. “Find a great company that listens and talk,” she says. “Talk loudly. Don’t take advice from naysayers. Also, find a strong female mentor, especially if you have kids.” Finding success so early in life hasn’t made Hays complacent; she is still working toward many goals. One is to raise her kids to work hard and care for others and another goal is to work as long as she can because she truly loves her job. Finally, Hays wants to make a difference in the world. She’s certainly made a difference in Southlake—and something tells us she’s just getting started.

owards the end of 2015, Drs. Peter and Deborah Zanella realized they had outgrown their office of ten years in Southlake Town Center, and it was time to find a new location with more room for their growing practice and new, cutting-edge technology. Around that time, they met Dr. Taylor Brooks, an optometrist who has served the Grapevine community and surrounding areas for over seventeen years, and one of the only doctors in the area to provide specialty eye care like vision therapy, sports vision therapy, and orthokeratology (non-surgical vision correction). The Zanellas told Dr. Brooks about their vision of a new practice. Dr. Deborah Zanella explains, “We soon realized we had a shared goal of providing our patients with exceptional eye care in a family-oriented office, and also realized we could better do that by merging our offices and areas of expertise.” Kirkwood Eye Center was founded on the principle of providing extraordinary, personalized service while utilizing the latest state-of-the-art technology. “Our patients have many choices for their eye care, and when they choose us, it is the highest of compliments,” says Dr. Peter Zanella. “We work daily to deliver the most thorough examination possible and to answer each and every question our patients have.” One of the practice’s specialties is helping children and adolescents who are struggling in the classroom or on the playing field. Oftentimes, a child’s inability to focus in these settings stems from vision problems that can be improved with vision therapy. This kind of therapy can also help some children who have dyslexia, experience headaches, or avoid or are slow at reading. Not only does Kirkwood Eye Center offer a wide range of specialty eye care services, but you can also find unique European and American frames. “While we carry some popular name brands, I also wanted to carry some exclusive European lines for individuals who like to create their own style and want the highest quality available,” Dr. Deborah Zanella says. “I traveled to the International Vision Expo in Las Vegas to choose from among the world’s best frame lines to bring back to Southlake.” They also have an experienced frame stylist on staff to help patients make their selections. All of Kirkwood’s doctors are passionate about patient care. They believe that developing long-term relationships with patients allows them to better meet their patients’ vision needs. Whether the patient needs a comprehensive eye exam, emergency eye care, or care for complex medical conditions related to eyes or vision, the doctors at Kirkwood Eye Center are dedicated to helping families and individuals get the most out of their vision.

n a C-suite world seemingly dominated by men, a woman may be tempted to blend in as she climbs the corporate ladder. While the meeting of minds may take place on an equal playing field, it doesn’t mean women in business must give up what suits them—right down to the interior design of their office. For women who want to showcase their personal style beyond their wardrobe, look no further than the Sydney Desk from Z Gallerie. This functional piece blends the shape and form of a classic bureau with a modern take on timeless design elements. In a home office or otherwise, the Sydney sets itself apart from other desks. This bureau may not have traditional oak legs to stand on, but the gold-plated, polished stainless steel base is exceptionally durable. Architecturally, the base forms a pattern reminiscent of ancient Grecian art—as do the fixtures and faceplates of the top-panel drawers. The openness of the desk’s foundation allows light to pass under and around the frame, giving it an airy feeling. Its presence within a room immediately brightens the rest of the space. Just as luxurious feeling and exquisite looking, the desk’s wooden top panel with hardwood veneer and white high-gloss finish serves as a blank canvas. On this bureau, you just may write the next Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, draft the business plan for your latest tech venture or manage your family’s

budget and calendar. Oh, and adding just the right tape dispenser, vase and picture frame is another way you can personalize your Sydney. Z Gallerie has not only created an elegant masterpiece for your space but has paid attention to the functionality of the Sydney Desk. It’s the right size for most rooms: 48 inches wide, 24 inches deep and 30.5 inches tall. Three drawers within the desk’s top panel each measure 16.5 inches deep. Also worth noting—since assembly is required—the weight of the base and top panel, 36.5 lbs. and 79.5 lbs., respectively, which makes it fairly substantial given its size. Eight plastic glides on the bottom of the base protect flooring so, when it’s fully assembled, the desk will look great here … or there … or over here. Too often when searching for office furniture it’s easy to settle for the customary wooden desk. While traditional pieces may very well suit your style, Z Gallerie challenges you to think outside the box made up of your office’s four walls. Introducing something unexpected and a little bit sassy to your space may inspire your work or simply make a statement. Either way, the Sydney Desk serves its purpose well.

Plus, you can also find us at our church, Gateway, on the weekends as well. I’m proud to pay it forward by... Providing for families that have faced struggles. My investment company has placed many families within homes that could not financially afford to purchase a property or had recent hardships. Five Pointers For Your Best Family Photos Yet 1) Aim for clothing in the same color family

2 ) Forgo everyday casual for fancier apparel 3) Be open to new locales for your photo shoot 4) Allow room for spontaneity to get the best shots 5) Plan ahead to reduce stress

LUCE Photography] was able to make him feel comfortable and relaxed, which led to fantastic portraits. I was so pleased with how she brought out his smile and personality.” So how do you find the photographer that’s right for your family? Burns recommends talking to photographers about your ideas before booking a session. “If they can’t get behind your vision for your pictures, move on to someone else,” she advises.

D

Dress for the Occasion One of the most pondered questions for any outing is, “What should I wear?” But when it comes to a family photo session, you’re not only deciding what you should wear for the day, but for years to come as your memories live on your walls or in frames throughout your home. While you certainly don’t want to look like a cloned family from a home catalog, there are a few tips to consider when selecting clothing. “We tell families to avoid bold patterns or large stripes, as these distract from the faces,” says photographer Mike Krause of BluDoor Studios. “We also prefer color. Sometimes families think it is easier to wear white or black, but coordinating colors and simple patterns make the most interesting photographs.” Photographer Thaddeus Harden advises that families dress up for photos, rather than fall into the temptation of wearing their normal daily attire. “In this day of everyday casual, taking the time to think about what you’re wearing and putting some finesse and style into your choices goes a long way toward creating an iconic image,” Harden says. “The more thought you put into your OCT 16 • 61

style, the better the outcome. Very few subjects really can stand out when they don’t take the time to add a little (or a lot) of flair to their style for a shoot.” He also suggests that families coordinate on a color, theme or location that works to set up their unique identity for the photo. Photographer Sarah Goucher of LUCE Photography agrees. “A good rule of thumb is to choose a neutral and a pop of color that will flow throughout the outfits to tie them together,” she says. Hone in on When and Where Almost as important as what you’ll be wearing for your photos is when and where you’ll be taking them. As luck would have it, autumn is the perfect time to schedule them. “Cooler weather lends itself to more options, with the changing of the leaves, better clothing choices and the anticipation of the holidays,” Krause says. Goucher agrees that autumn is a great time for family photos, not only for weather conditions, but also to avoid rushing to squeeze in sessions for holiday cards and the other demands brought on by the season. Deciding where to take your photos can be a personal decision, many times based on a location that’s sentimental to your family. Don’t have anything in mind? Krause recommends Bob Jones Nature Center, the parks along Lake Grapevine and Colleyville’s parks, while Harden suggests a few less traditional routes, finding inspiration in cars, buses, streets, homes, kitchens, pools, barns and fields. “I’m always exploring, always open to new possibilities with every shoot,” Harden says. Prefer not to risk nature’s elements? Choose a photographer who comes to your home or offers an in-studio option. This is often

ideal when including young children in photos, who may require feedings, naps or whose overall mood of the moment may dictate the personality of the photo. Capture Picture-Perfect Moments Life isn’t always perfect, so why should your photos be? Remember that as much as you want your toddler to smile for the camera, it might not be in the cards. Which is not only okay—but can actually result in unforgettable moments. “The biggest mistake clients make is trying to be perfect and making it stressful for the family,” Krause says. “Let the kids be kids!” Goucher agrees that overthinking the session and worrying too much about the outcome can backfire. “We know children are unpredictable and many of the best photos come from the unplanned spontaneous moments,” she says. But for all the spontaneity, photographers still recommend planning ahead to avoid stress. Know where you are going, what you’re going to wear and when everyone needs to be there. Above all else, when it comes to getting your family together for a photo session, a sense of humor and a relaxed state of mind is key. “Sometimes the best images aren’t the ones where everyone is looking at the camera and smiling,” Krause says. “Showing how a family interacts and laughs are some of the greatest memories we capture.” A day spent laughing with your family for the sake of creating lasting memories? That’s something to smile about. SouthlakeStyle.com

UNDERNEATH IT ALL LOCAL AUTHORS OF “RED THONG STRONG” SHARE HOW LIFE IS BETTER WITH FRIENDS

SS NEXT DOOR

For eight sassy Texas women (pictured clockwise from upper left), Linda Storer, Shelley Tyler, Becky Elder, Charlotte Hill, Bev Mann, Terri Jutras, Debbie Williams and Debbi Comparin, a little red thong is much more than an undergarment; it’s a bond between friends. In their book, “Red Thong Strong,” these local authors (five reside in Colleyville) offer tips on navigating life’s ups and downs—or as they say, “smoothing life’s panty lines.” Get a copy and prepare to laugh out loud—and maybe develop a little “thong-a-tude” along the way. . What inspired your group of friends to write a book? Everyone told us we had something special. So one night after a party celebrating our high school graduates, we started jotting down ideas on napkins, scraps of paper and anything we could find. Next thing we knew, we were meeting weekly to share our secrets to finding lasting friendships, embracing all life has to offer and having fun along the way. “Red Thong Strong” is a spunky title! How did you decide on the name? To us, a thong was a natural choice. For years we’ve given each other pretty red panties to help take the sting out of big birthdays. And over time, the red thong has come to represent the bold, confident way we want to live and how small, unseen things can have a big impact. What do you hope readers take away from your tales of friendship? We hope readers find our book fun, informative and helpful. We want them to feel connected to our group and realize the life-changing value girlfriends can have. We’d like to inspire readers to make new friends while appreciating and working to deepen and strengthen their present relationships.

Tell us about the process of compiling each woman’s stories. We began the book on Debbi’s 50th birthday and it took 10 years to complete. It took time because we wrote every word together. Tuesday night became our “book club” night—not for reading great works but for writing one. Picture a round table, dueling laptops and eight opinionated women. Did you draw inspiration from other books? Oh, yes. In fact, we modeled our book after several of our favorites. Like “Don’t Sing at the Table” by Adriana Trigiani, “Red Thong Strong” includes life lessons, personal anecdotes women can apply to their own lives and some of our best recipes. Our book also recounts true experiences of a girlfriend group with a lifetime of memories in common, as Jeffrey Zaslow did in “The Girls from Ames.” In addition to encouraging readers, our stories should help them empathize with and relate to our girlfriend group and energize them to tackle new and exciting adventures.

So, what’s the key to maintaining lifelong friendships? Much like marriage, long-term friendships require commitment. We’ve learned transparency brings us closer, being quick to apologize and forgive is both humbling and healing, and embracing each other’s differences leads us to laughter. When our friendship began in the 1980s, we did not have email or social media. We’ve always had something far better: verbal communication.

How has the book transformed your lives? Releasing “Red Thong Strong” has been an amazing adventure. At a time when our lives should be slowing down, our book is keeping us busier than ever. It has given us an opportunity to reconnect with old friends while making many new ones in Texas and around the country. We love talking with readers at our book signings as well as on social media. Many tell us they see themselves and their girlfriends in our stories. We’ve also been honored to learn many women walk away from the book feeling invigorated and delighted to know they’ve made eight new best friends.

What was the biggest challenge in writing the book? Scheduling! Coordinating meetings with eight active, involved women proved to be a daunting task. With eight husbands, 18 children, 20 grandchildren, jobs and other commitments, scheduling writing time was like piecing together a puzzle. Life sometimes got in our way—births, deaths, injuries, illnesses, job changes and relocations—but we persevered.

Can we count on a sequel? We've often joked that our next book will be a journal with blank pages. But all kidding aside, we’re not ready to end our journey. Writing “Red Thong Strong” has been an incredible experience that has enriched our lives and hopefully our readers’ lives as well. We may write about the next chapter of our friendship. Never underestimate the power of eight women in red!

make is from scratch,” says Gastelum. Simply put: Mexican Sugar’s traditional ingredients and culture-centered methods triumph other eateries in the area. When you enter the Latin-inspired restaurant, you’re immediately welcomed by a beautiful, romantic décor that sets the scene for the perfect date night. What seems like hundreds of candles are lit behind the seating, taking you to another place in time. The dreamy ambiance will be sure to make your dining experience one to remember. For brunch, start with some addictive queso mole, complete with chorizo, mole negro, pico de gallo and queso fresco. It’ll be one of the best quesos you’ll find in the DFW area. Feeling adventurous? Try the refreshing mango napa chicken salad, heavenly vanilla cinnamon pancakes or pan-roasted snapper, a customer favorite.

LOCALFLAVOR review Want an equally amazing drink to go with your masterfully executed meal? Mexican Sugar has a make-your-own mimosa bar that includes a glass of champagne and fruit juice of your choice. “There is something about coming to brunch on a relaxing Sunday morning and getting the Benedictos Rancheros with a mimosa,” says Gastelum. Other beverage selections include classic margaritas, sangrias and an assortment of beers and wines. Looking for a tasty nonalcoholic drink? Try the horchata, a sweet, rice-based milk infused with cinnamon that you will happily enjoy ’til the last drop. On Fridays and Saturdays, visit the bar for happy hour from 10 p.m. to midnight and enjoy refreshing $4 margaritas. Because the Plano restaurant is so popular, reviewers suggest dining during lunchtime, but that doesn’t mean the wait isn’t worth it. The shrimp/crab/avocado cocktail makes a great appetizer to kick off a belly-filling midday meal. Lunch entrees include the grilled romaine and skirt steak salad; brisket, pork and chicken tacos; and irresistible lump crab enchiladas, among others. For those feeling extra hungry, order a side of the cilantro fingerling potatoes or Latin corn succotash to complement an already lavish lunch. No matter what you’re craving, we’re certain you’ll find a plate that’ll blow your taste buds away within the first couple of bites. And we can’t forget everyone’s favorite meal of the day: dinner. For a starter, you can’t go wrong with the grilled pardon peppers and squash blossom quesadilla. The smoked salt and citrus glaze on the peppers amp up the flavor, and the spiced mushrooms, salsa and grilled onions in the quesadilla will hold you over as you anticipate the palate-pleasing grub to come. If you’re in the mood for tacos, feast your eyes on the spicy habanero chicken tacos and the carne asada, complete with wood-grilled skirt steak, pickled radish and other lip-smacking additions. Craving enchiladas? Order the roasted chicken enchiladas, filled with manchego cheese, queso blanco and heirloom black beans. For those with a robust appetite, Mexican Sugar offers Chilean sea bass, pork chops, grilled salmon and even duck breast mole accompanied by sweet Latin potato hash, chimichurri, herb oil and toasted sesame seeds. Couple your ingredientloaded entre with street-style elote or hearts of palm citrus salad and you’ll be sure to have a dinner you won’t find anywhere else. If you’re one of the few who saves room for dessert after eating such tantalizingly good food, complete your meal with some unbelievably moist chocolate avocado cake, featuring cinnamon meringue, chocolate avocado mousse and savory ganache. Pair that with some Mexican hot chocolate and you will never want to eat again (in a good way). In the Lone Star State, there is definitely no shortage of Mexican restaurants. However, for those tired of the same old Tex-Mex, Mexican Sugar offers a vast variety of brunch, lunch and dinner fare that stays true to the eatery’s Latin-inspired roots. Mexican Sugar is truly a hidden gem that begs to be noticed among an array of expected Mexican establishments. Why settle for less when you can get the whole enchilada?

Sprouted turkey sandwich

Sandwich Satisfaction East Hampton Sandwich Co. upgrades the traditional bread-and-filling template

Lobster grilled cheese

EAST HAMPTON SANDWICH CO.

Is the sandwich the best culinary creation of all time? At East Hampton Sandwich Co., it’s a resolute “yes!” This East Coastinspired shop crafts sandwiches that demand your attention, from classics such as roast turkey and grilled chicken to clever masterpieces that’ll floor your taste buds. Think marvels such as the Cuban (roast pork, brown sugar ham, Swiss and mojo sauce) and Balsamic Tenderloin (chilled beef tenderloin, crispy onion strings, Bleu cheese and balsamic glaze). We love that everything is handcrafted in-house—from the house-roasted meats to the handmade sauces. Though every sandwich we’ve sampled has been nothing short of amazing, the Sweet Chicken Parm is a standout. Envision a juicy fried chicken breast topped with melted provolone, fresh basil and marinara tucked inside a buttered, toasted roll. It’s mindblowing and far surpasses any sub-shop offering we’ve tried. Toss in the complimentary house-made chips and you have a satisfying meal. East Hampton Sandwich Co. has received a slew of accolades, including recognition as one of Zagat’s “10 New Sandwiches You Need to Eat Right Now in DFW” and Thrillist’s “21 Best Sandwich Shops in America.” The restaurant urges sandwich seekers to eat #NoMoreDeliMeat. (It’s sort of the eatery’s unofficial PSA.) But East Hampton does more than craft life-changing sandwiches; it also prepares gourmet salads, soup (including its famous Chowda) and signature sides such as sweet potato fries. The interesting menu is punctuated with several East Coast inspirations such as New England clam chowder (Harbor Banks clams, roasted potatoes and herbs) and a lobster roll (chilled knuckle and claw meat with light aioli, lemon and herbs). This sandwich (be sure to pronounce it “lobstah”) pushes $20, but it’s worth it. Love the idea of a gourmet sammie but want to cut the carbs? Turn your sandwich into a salad featuring a bed of romaine or spring mix. If you go that route, you can justify splurging on a Toasted Fluffernutter for dessert. This regional favorite is made with creamy peanut butter and marshmallow crème on sourdough Texas toast. Trust us: You’ll want to save room for this one. Don’t expect to watch sandwich slingers cram cold cuts into a sub and move it down the assembly line. This is an eatery where sandwiches are meant to be savored. Should you care to enjoy a craft beer, glass of wine or cocktail with your lobster roll or goat cheese and avocado mash, then by all means, indulge. We can assuredly say: East Hampton Sandwich Co. hits the spot, whether you’re craving a taste of New England or just a hearty sandwich and chips. We foresee it becoming a regular addition to our lunchtime rotation.

Nutella crepe

Give Us the Crepes Crepes Bistro fearlessly puts a Texas twist on French fare Creperies are not exactly ubiquitous in our area, but we discovered a gem in Colleyville: Crepes Bistro. This charming eatery along Colleyville Boulevard is churning out whisper-thin wonders filled with all kinds of goodness. We’re talking cinnamon apples, banana and Nutella, among other tantalizing choices. But Crepes Bistro isn’t afraid to push the flavor boundaries either, offering a taste of Texas with ingredients such as jalapeño, Texas-style sausage and barbecue sauce. The menu bursts with an extensive list of crepes that evenly bridge the sweet and savory divide. You can expect plenty of variety to satisfy everyone’s tastes—including your kids. Bring the whole family for brunch or an after-school snack. We don’t know any kids who would turn up their noses at a hot dog crepe. (Or one smothered in whipped cream.) We also like Crepes Bistro for a laid-back date night; live jazz music every Friday and Saturday from 8 p.m. to midnight adds an air of sophistication.

CREPES BISTRO 5615 Colleyville Boulevard Colleyville

With more than 20 signature crepes on the menu, including the Tex-Mex (beef or chicken, sautéed veggies, black beans, jalapeños and chipotle sauce) and the Chicken Apple Sausage (cheese, fig spread, sautéed onion and fried egg), you’re bound to find something to love. Or, just select your favorite ingredients for a totally custom crepe. A plain crepe starts at $4, and you can pile on the flavor with ingredients such as prosciutto, salmon and dried fig. In the mood for something sweet? Who isn’t? We’re obsessed with the sweet Brie crepe. You can’t go wrong with Brie stuffed in a delicate crepe with honey-roasted pecans, a touch of honey and whipped cream. For those who prefer flowing chocolate, Crepes Bistro excels with its Nutella crepe, which is loaded with banana, strawberry, chocolate sauce, almonds and whipped cream. And because few things go better with French crepes than espresso, be sure to try your pick-me-up in enticing flavors such as white chocolate, vanilla bean and raspberry. Or cozy up to a warm Chai latte or green tea while the kids enjoy a hot chocolate with their crepes. Like any authentic French eatery, Crepes Bistro also serves quiche, friands and plenty of treats such as macaroons and crème brûlée. But the star of the show is indeed the crepes, those delicate, French-style pancakes with a perfect balance of crispy and fluffy. Go try one. No matter sweet or savory, they’re all très bon to us. Vive la crepe!

Haunted Hotspots INVESTIGATE FIVE OF THE COUNTRY’S SPOOKIEST SITES

H

istory repeats itself—most often when ghosts just can’t move on. The following destinations treat visitors to a uniquely haunted experience, but that’s not all they offer guests. Our intent is not to scare you away from these hauntings, but send you on a spirited adventure throughout the United States.

Moon River Brewing Company Savannah, Georgia wordpress.MoonRiverBrewing.com Not only is Savannah one of the oldest cities in Georgia, it’s also one of the original 13 colonies. Historical sites abound, each one chronicling the people, places and events of the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. It’s easy to point out the haunted historical locations of last stands and “surrenders gone bad” in the city, but much more enticing is an oldfashioned ghost story involving a haunted brewery. Moon River Brewing Company is housed in one of Savannah’s oldest buildings. From hotel and post office to bank and bar, the building has

seen its share of visitors since it first opened in 1821. Many a mishap, argument and gunfight has unfolded on the grounds in the past 200 years. And as the stories go, these malicious events have led to ghosts making their presence known in the most obnoxious of ways—such as “pushing” around the visitors. But don’t let this deter you from visiting. While you are there checking out the spirits, enjoy one of Moon River’s award-winning brews.

The Driskill Hotel Austin, Texas DriskillHotel.com The Driskill Hotel in Austin is a Lone Star landmark. Cattle baron Colonel Jesse Driskill built his eponymous hotel in 1886, and today, the building is designated as the oldest operating hotel in Texas. Playing host to inaugural balls for many Texas governors and lavish events for international dignitaries over the years, the hotel has accommodated grand parties—and party guests. Spend a night at the Driskill Hotel and you just might hear the sound of big band music revelers of years past in the lobby. Hotel guests have reported seeing partygoers dressed in elaborate ball gowns and tuxedos. This may not seem too spooky—until they learn there are no social events taking place on the property that night.

BOARDING PASS spooky sites But the ghosts are friendly, and the only haunting to be had by the spirits is a little light flickering and making their appearance known on occasion throughout the hotel. Who knows? They might even suggest you try a fresh house-made pastry from the hotel’s 1886 Cafe and Bakery.

of the family’s lavish parties, a fire broke out and quickly spread. While the fire was being put out, the firemen and party guests heard screaming coming from the basement of the home. When they made their way to the lower level and opened the door, to their horrid surprise, they discovered servants and slaves shackled to the walls who had apparently been used in various science experiments. We will leave the gruesome details to the tour guide. Of course, the mansion has been haunted since the disaster, and over the years tales of unexplained phenomenon have riddled the history of 1140 Royal Street—the LaLaurie Mansion.

In 1974, the Accuardi family opened Old Town Pizza in Portland, Oregon. It quickly became a legendary landmark. And thanks to a “working woman” named Nina who lived more than 100 years ago, it is also a haunted landmark. As the legend goes, Nina met her demise after being pushed down an elevator shaft in Portland’s Merchant Hotel. Although it was decades later that the defunct hotel would become a pizzeria, Nina seems to have stuck around since her murder to roam the restaurant. Present-day patrons of Old Town Pizza catch a glimpse of Nina’s ghost now and then or catch the scent of her perfume as she passes by. Stop in and grab a slice and a beer—Old Town Pizza is also a brewpub now—but don’t be surprised if an unexpected guest joins you for happy hour. We hear she smells divine.

Fort Mifflin Philadelphia, Pennsylvania FortMifflin.us While it may have been the Brits who commissioned Fort Mifflin— as it is now named—it became an American fortification in 1777. Over the next 240 years, Fort Mifflin would experience the Civil War and both World Wars, giving the resident ghosts plenty of time to perfect their hauntings. While a variety of educational and history buff-worthy guided tours are offered at Fort Mifflin, only the paranormal tour will engage your spirit senses. A popular haunted spot on the guided tour is the location of the screaming woman. In the early 1860s, a woman named Elizabeth Bunker lived with her husband Warrant Officer Gunner Benjamin Bunker in the officer’s quarters. She suffered from gastritis, and the pain was so intense she would scream. Back then, her wailing and shrieking could be heard throughout the fort. And, as any good ghost story goes, her screams can still be heard centuries later.

The LaLaurie Mansion New Orleans, Louisiana HauntedHistoryTours.com The Crescent City may be known for voodoo and vampires, but there are plenty of ghosts who call New Orleans’ French Quarter home. It seems a haunted mansion sits on every corner. But one ghastly tale stands out above the rest, according to Haunted History Tours, a company that prides itself on being the experts when it comes to the history—and haunting—of New Orleans. Howdy, Folks! The State Fair of Texas is bigger, better and hotter than ever

W

e Texans wait all year for just the slightest dip in temperature to signal one thing: the coming of the State Fair of Texas! As always, Big Tex will greet you as you make your way to the best food, fun, and family-friendly festival of the year. This year, top food awards go to Ruth Hauntz and her fried Jell-O with Isaac Rousso winning the Most Creative Category for his State Fair Cookie Fries. But don’t stop there! Other entries into this year’s food contest include a plethora of fanciful fried foods. We admit we’re intrigued by the fried cannoli bites and the fried smoked salmon and bacon croquettes. And don’t forget about the legendary Fletcher’s corny dogs! In addition, prepare to be entertained with musical acts ranging from Casey Musgrave and Nelly to the fiddling trio The Quebe Sisters and La Energia Nortena. Check the website at BigTex.com for show schedules and times, as the full 23 days of the fair are packed with lively music and family fun! Of course, the State Fair of Texas wouldn’t be what it is without livestock. Originally organized as a showcase for Texas agriculture, the fair continues to please patrons of all ages with Farm Day at the Fair, Ag-ventures on the Fairgrounds, Educational Shows (including showcases from the Dallas Police Department), Milking Demos from the Southwest Dairy Museum, Livestock Guided Tours, and Horse Demos. So rustle up your family and plan your trip! Tickets and the fair map are located at BigTex.com.
