where there’s a woman, there’s a way Thanks to my family, I learned this lesson early in life. These ideals were perpetuated early in my career too — through a series of impressive female colleagues and supervisors. From them, I learned much about work, life and how to best balance it all. Now as the publisher of Southlake’s premiere lifestyle publication, I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity to work alongside all of the women at Southlake Style. Each month, their collective skills and expertise lie behind the scenes, but this month they, too, shine in the spotlight along with all of the impressive entries in our annual Women in Business profiles. Founder and CEO of PeopleResults, Patti Johnson, leads our coverage of engaging women from all walks of life. We also sat down with a hockey mom and a team of artists-turned-entrepreneurs to hear their inspiring personal stories. In every instance, these leading ladies have met life’s many challenges head on and distinctly carved out a path that has paid dividends both personally and professionally. As you read this month’s issue, I hope it provides some insight and inspiration for your own journey.

GIRL, WASH YOUR FACE “I am loving ‘Girl, Wash Your Face’ by Rachel Hollis. The subtitle is ‘Stop Believing Lies About Who You Are So You Can Become Who You Were Meant to Be.’ It’s like sitting on the patio at Del Frisco’s Grille getting some tough love from a real friend. I wish I could hand copies to every woman I know. It’s empowering and inspiring and reminds women that no matter our circumstances, we have the power to become whoever we want to be.” - Chelsea Salomone, co-owner and co-founder of Clever Bear Leathers
EVERY BREATH NICHOLAS SPARKS OCTOBER 16 Get the Tissues Ready… Again It’s hard to believe he has any plotlines left to write, but the “New York Times” bestselling author Nicholas Sparks is at it again. Best known for “The Notebook,” his latest novel promises a similar cathartic experience. Main characters Hope Anderson and Tru Walls are strangers going through immense family turmoil that leads them both to Sunset Beach, North Carolina. Hope is there to prepare the family cottage for sale as her father was recently diagnosed with ALS. Tru is in town to meet a man who claims to be his father. When the two strangers cross paths, their connection and chemistry is clear. Their feelings for each other will give way to choices that pit family duty against personal happiness, begging the question, which loyalties win out?
CHARMED THE CW OCTOBER 14 Never Too Soon for a Reboot
A STAR IS BORN IN THEATERS OCTOBER 5 A Movie to Go Gaga Over When big names like Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga team up, you know it’s going to be good. Cooper plays an experienced musician, Jackson Maine, who discovers Ally (Gaga), a struggling artist. While falling in love with her, Jackson is able to push Ally out of her comfort zone and into the spotlight. As a result, her career takes off, but their personal relationship suffers. It’s a love story paired with Lady Gaga’s powerhouse voice, so even if the storyline isn’t to your liking, prepare to be dazzled anyway. If the plot sounds familiar, it’s because this movie is the fourth remake of a classic tale that has starred actresses such as Barbra Streisand (1976) and Judy Garland (1954).

Is it 1998 again? No, but two decades later, “Charmed” is back. The reboot features some substantial updates, but the premise remains the same: Three sisters discover they have supernatural abilities. Set in the fictional college town of Hilltowne, the show starts out with two of the sisters, Mel (Melonie Diaz) and Maggie Vera (Sarah Jeffery), living with their mother Marisol. Tragedy strikes when Marisol is attacked and killed. Fast forward three months and the two sisters discover that they have an older half-sister, Marcy Vaughn (Madeleine Mantock). With the three girls united, they start to exhibit magical abilities such as telekinesis. Watch as they journey through newly discovered powers and are faced with the choice of how to use them.

itting side-by-side in hot pink office chairs surrounded by endless rows of twinkling jewelry and one-of-a-kind spools of leather, Southlake moms and entrepreneurs Jaymi Bear and Chelsea Salomone exchange quick banter and lots of laughter as they work. Their wildly successful brand of Clever Bear Leathers has taken the market by storm creating exponential growth in the first 16 months of operation, placing their product internationally and in over 65 stores nationwide. But becoming a small business owner is only a snippet of who these inspiring women are. At an adjacent desk to Jaymi and Chelsea, a blanket fort and bright orange plastic sword serve as a reminder that these two best friends and neighbors are moms first, even in their self-made leather factory. With five young boys between them, the duo would have never imagined a simple quest to create a unique gift for a friend’s birthday would turn into a full-blown, lucrative business that would boast over 70 percent annual growth in year-over-year sales in just two years of operation. It is this quest that serves as the reason the duo call Clever Bear Leathers “our business that happened by accident.” The two friends were compelled by the idea of using their combined vision to build a business from the ground up. Their designs are handcrafted with passion and creativity, which was quickly picked up by their expansive customer base. The proof of their success lies solely in the skyrocketing demand, an impressive 2,600 sales on Etsy alone, for their high-quality work that has triggered instant, organic growth.
PUTTING THEIR STAMP ON THE MARKET It all began in December of 2016 when the pair of friends were searching for a unique gift to celebrate a friend. Chelsea turned to Jaymi, knowing her keen eye for design, and enlisted her help to create a stunningly unique pair of leather earrings. Jaymi’s creation was such an instant hit with their friends, she immediately sought out artisan leathers in a variety of textures and colors so she could hand craft them into exquisite works of art. For every handmade pair of earrings Jaymi created, Chelsea would sell three more plus return with additional orders for new designs. Despite success within their network, it wasn’t until a stranger approached Chelsea at a Southlake restaurant offering to buy a pair of the handmade earrings right out of her ears that they realized if they were willing to put in the time and work, they just might be on the precipice of a business they never envisioned. “We knew right away we wouldn’t have a business without the other,” Jaymi says. “We each bring something to the table that is totally separate and

unique from the other. Our friendship and our business have flourished because of it.” It was clear that together, they had talent combined with passion to create something that they didn’t even know existed. Clever those leathers are.
AN EXPLOSION OF COMMUNITY SUPPORT In February of 2017, the two officially decided to pair their talents in a 50/50 partnership to create a brand aptly named Clever Bear Leathers (CBL) that would soon sweep the community. Their Etsy site launched and the momentum they gained through friends and family on social media, more than 2,000 social media followers across their different platforms, caught the attention of local boutiques. As the orders rolled in, the creativity did too, so their collection designs expanded to accommodate custom orders. “Although neither of us had any formal sales or business training, we believed so much in each other and in our product that we were determined to figure it out together,” Chelsea says. And did they ever. By March, just one month in, CBL landed itself in three local retail shops. With sales on a sharp incline, nearly tripling in sales from January, showing no signs of slowing, it was clear that the community’s quick embrace of the bubbly duo and their popular brand was the catalyst behind their explosive growth. Jamie Baker, owner of The Gift Shop and Gameday in Southlake, remembers the day Jaymi and Chelsea approached her shop with cleverly designed Dragon earrings in tow. “Adding Clever Bear Leathers to our spirit line at Gameday was truly a no brainer,” Jamie says. “We love offering local, handmade items in our boutique, and our shoppers are always looking for unique and amazing finds, so their creations fit into our shop perfectly.” SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM
But with rapid success comes the need to adapt and grow. By summer of 2017, with just five months under their belts, Jaymi and Chelsea were working hard to balance family life alongside a continued influx of orders. Chelsea focused on developing and maintaining systems to ease growing pains while Jaymi enlisted help to fulfill the handmade orders. Before the ring of the new year, the debt-free company hired two additional team members to serve as jewelry designers and a business-minded financial assistant. With 2018 on the horizon, CBL had nearly quadrupled its sales and had transitioned from two employees to five, as well as officially creating the space they have now dubbed “The Leather Factory.”
THE SKY IS THE LIMIT With their designs expanding beyond earrings and into handmade custom necklaces, bracelets and even the addition of acrylic and cork material, CBL has clearly set itself apart from its competition. Nothing proved this more than their first experience at Dallas Market this past June where they blew away their goal of landing 10 new wholesalers to carry their line, instead, adding 47 stores nationwide, spanning across 37 states. Their unique ability to allow boutiques to build their own custom lines for their stores is one thing Jaymi and Chelsea believed helped catapult their success at market even further.
A CLEVER RESPONSE TO SUCCESS Aside from creativity, community and customer service, another core value of Clever Bear Leathers is giving back. Both Jaymi and Chelsea have diligently sought out ways to use their gifts to benefit others. In February of 2018, CBL celebrated their one-year anniversary at an event they hosted called “Baubles and Bubbles,” raising $1,000 for Lurie ChilOCT 18 • 25
dren’s Hospital and the Luke 18:1 Foundation. Both beneficiary organizations support two Southlake families and their mission to find a cure for their children’s rare genetic diseases. “We were humbled and honored to be a beneficiary of Clever Bear’s anniversary event. I wasn’t even aware that our foundation was a beneficiary until the invitation went out, which speaks volumes about the two women behind the business,” says Southlake resident Nicole Stickane, who founded the Luke 18:1 Foundation in support of her son who has Spinal Muscular Atrophy. “They are selfless and believe in using their business to give back to their community. We are forever grateful for the love Chelsea and Jaymi have for our child and others affected by rare diseases.” Additionally, Clever Bear Leathers has teamed up with Autism Avenue, a boutique in Kansas that employees and advocates for people with Autism, The NET in Ft. Worth and Give Them A Voice Foundation to support victims of sex trafficking. Beyond their philanthropic hearts, Jaymi and Chelsea know their success is not on their own. Through each and every transaction, success and failure, doors opened and closed, these two faithful women are able to see God’s hand at work, directing them in places they never imagined. “We are incredibly grateful to be where we are today and proud to have roots in this town,” Chelsea says. “Southlake has been so gracious to us and really propelled our team to take it to the next level. We’ve found that passion, determination, audacity and a little luck have gotten us far. Well, that and caffeine.”

BIG BROTHER SURPRISES SISTER WITH HIS RETURN HOME DURING HER SECOND WEEK OF SCHOOL Brooklyn Leak, 8, got a surprise delivery during her second week back to school at Johnson Elementary School when her older brother, Hadden, stopped into her class. Hadden, a 2017 Carroll grad, just got back from basic training and wanted to pop into Brooklyn’s second grade classroom to visit her after seven months away. She saw him in his uniform standing in the doorway, ran up to him and jumped into his arms with delight – all of which was captured on Twitter by Brooklyn’s teacher, Ms. Kerr. Hadden is currently active in UNT’s ROTC, Reserve Officer Training Corps, college program. But he wanted to take advantage of his time off to see his favorite Dragon in action.
GIVE BACK WHILE DRESSING UP AT THE SECOND ANNUAL BACK TO THE ’80S DANCE PARTY Break out the legwarmers and Member’s Only jackets and make your way to the second annual Back to the ’80s Dance Party on October 20. Locals are invited to come out to The Marq to enjoy the red carpet, dinner, silent auctions, raffles, contests and more. There will be plenty of dancing with performances from the ’80s tribute band, Live 80, and DJ Richard Blade. All the proceeds will benefit Journey Learning Center in Grapevine, a nonprofit specializing in treating children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Last year’s event raised $57,000, and this year they are hoping to donate more to help launch the nonprofit’s Skills for the Journey program, which will teach their middle school students life skills like cooking, laundry, playing games and setting the table. DRAGON CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS BATTLE THE ELEMENTS AND EMERGE VICTORIOUS While Southlake certainly needed the rain, a dedicated group of athletes were probably wishing for clearer skies last month. The 14th annual Southlake Invitational was held Septeber 8 at Bob Jones Park in Southlake. Despite the deluge, the first three races were completed until field flooding caused the remaining races to be cancelled. With more than 3000 runners attending, the event hosted teams from around Texas as well as neighboring states. Among those runners, our Dragons made their mark, with the Boys Varsity Elite and Girls Varsity Open both taking first place, and Girls Varsity Elite placing third. “We are extremely pleased with the way our athletes responded to today’s conditions,” Carroll Cross Country Head Coach Justin Leonard says via press release. “Anyone can run fast when the conditions are ideal, but the sign of a champion is when they can block it out and complete the goal.”

BEDFORD RESIDENT ALTON STOCKTON STILL LIVING WITH WEST NILE COMPLICATIONS Alton Stockton traveled to Houston last year to volunteer after Hurricane Harvey hit southern Texas. While working with other support groups, he grew ill and had to be rushed to the ER for what he learned to be West Nile. He was able to return home, but he is still dealing with the complications that have come with West Nile. One of his lifelong medical complications is the loss of leg mobility. That was until his medical team suited up Alton with a new innovative mechanical brace, the $90,000 electronic C-brace. With the help of the state-of-the-art device, Alton was able to walk. His team of doctors told Alton and his family that he would not be able to walk again without the brace. So now, his loved ones are raising money to purchase one of these rare braces, one of 50 made each year in the country that’s not covered by any type of insurance. You can learn more about Alton and donate to his GoFundMe campaign at GF.me/u/kpv9nz.

CARROLL DRAGON KICKER MAKES DISTRICT HISTORY After a seemingly endless rain delay, the Southlake Carroll Dragons hastily defeated the Colleyville Heritage Panthers 42-17 in their first home game of the season. On Friday night, it wasn’t the arm of Will Bowers or the legs of TJ McDaniel that stood out to the Dragon faithful who sat through a two-hour rain delay. Rather, it was the left foot of Dragon Pride Player of the Week, Madison Martin. The senior two-sport star made her varsity football debut, kicking the first extra point of the night after a quick two-play touchdown drive in the Dragon’s very first possession. Martin’s PAT gave the Dragons a 7-0 lead with just over 11 minutes left in the first quarter. Martin, the first female varsity kicker in Carroll history, would go on to secure all four of her PATs for the game. Despite many shutout performances as a goalie for the Lady Dragon soccer team, Martin said she was nervous taking the first-ever gridiron kicks of her varsity career. “I have never done this before,” Martin says. “The energy level was insane, but I did what I practiced and it just played out really well.”

SOUTHLAKE DPS RACKS UP MORE THAN 30,000 FACEBOOK FOLLOWERS There are a few social accounts you need to follow around town: Carroll ISD for school news, Southlake Town Square for local events, Southlake Style – hopefully – for lifestyle content and Southlake DPS for city and safety updates. Southlake DPS’s Facebook page has a noble purpose: to serve the public and push out content that locals need to know about their town. But after Public Information Officer Brad Uptmore took over the police department’s social accounts in February, things have become a bit more entertaining. Whether you have followed along since the “GURL, CALL ME” cry or found the account after its recent pumpkin spice ticket video, followers can keep the laughs going by scrolling through the @SouthlakePublicSafety feed. Now, the page has surpassed 30,0000 followers, which is on the way of exceeding the city’s total population. It’s not just southlake residents keepting their eyes on Southlake DPS, but it’s also fans from around the country tuning in to see what officer Uptmore is up to next. As for what’s on deck for the amusing page, Uptmore is constantly thinking up new ideas that will keep us laughing – like a citywide scavenger hunt and potential celebrity appearances in upcoming videos. But he’s also working on content to keep Southlake safe as we move closer to the holidays.
TWENTY-ONE SOUTHLAKE STUDENTS NAMED NATIONAL MERIT SEMIFINALISTS In a brilliant display of Dragon Excellence, Southlake high school students were well represented in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program (NMSC). Twenty-one students were recognized as semifinalists and will have an opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million. About 16,000 students — less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors — get the marks to become semifinalists. To be considered for a National Merit Scholarship, semifinalists must advance to finalist standing in the competition by meeting high academic standards and all other requirements explained in the information provided to each semifinalist. Congratulations to our local National Merit semifinalists! HAUNTED HOUSE TO RAISE FUNDS FOR LOCAL NONPROFIT Every Friday and Saturday this month, The House of Terror will be open to the public. As you shriek in fear, you can also find peace in the fact that you’re screaming for a good cause. The admission price of $15 is donated to The Community Storehouse, a local nonprofit dedicated to helping children in the Keller, Northwest and Carroll Independent School Districts stay active in school. The haunted house, located at 4640 Keller Hicks Road, is open to all ages, but children under 13 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Tickets may be purchased at the door. ENGLE & VÖLKERS ANNOUNCES PLANS TO EXPAND ACROSS DFW Southlake real estate broker Roxann Taylor brought Engel & Völkers to Texas back in 2014 when she opened the company’s 28th location in North America. Now, the high-end real estate brand has expanded to 34 countries and has 150 locations spread throughout the continent. Taylor is moving that growth forward by announcing plans to open new locations throughout the DFW Metroplex, on top of her Southlake and Flower Mound shops. To fuel their growth, Taylor has brought on two new executive hires to roll out her expansion and added a sales group. James Keoughan, previously with Sotheby’s International Realty, has joined the Southlake shop as a business partner and director of sales. Charles Honeycutt also joins the Engel & Völkers team as the director of operations. Taylor also welcomes the Jenkins Group, formerly of Sotheby’s International Realty, to Engle & Völkers Dallas Southlake. BOARDROOM SALON FOR MEN SET TO GROW ACROSS THE COUNTRY WITH NEW INVESTMENT FROM LIGHTBAY CAPITAL The premium men’s salon franchise founded by Bruce and Heather Schultz is set to notably expand the number of salons and markets over the next several months after closing an investment with LightBay Capital. Flipping the Home Services Industry Upside Down billyGO is the brainchild of founder and CEO, Billy Stevens, an industry trendsetter who has lived in this community since 1985. The fully app-based approach brings unprecedented operating efficiency to the home services industry while providing a greatly improved customer experience and better prices. Stevens developed the concept based on years of experience. Between 1996 and 2011, he built Berkeys Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning from a two-plumber shop to one of the largest home services companies in the region. He sold it to a private investment firm in 2011. “After I sold Berkeys, I had time to step back and see things I missed when I was caught up in the day-to-day,” Stevens says. From that introspection, and considerable research, he developed the game-changing approach for billyGO, and in the process, flipped conventional home services management thinking upside down.
Heee’s Baaaacckk! Billy Stevens Returns With billyGO “Plumbing by APPointment”
G
rapevine-based billyGO is poised to disrupt the $400 billion home services industry and make getting your broken garbage disposal fixed as easy as hailing an Uber. It’s about time. The all-too-familiar drill now is: 1) call for service, 2) wait on hold, 3) explain the problem in detail, 4) receive a four-hour window for your appointment on a day convenient for the company. You arrange your schedule to be at home, and when the day arrives, you hang around the house waiting for the call that tells when you can actually expect help to arrive. Using the free billyGO app, homeowners schedule service appointments at the precise hour of the day they choose. No phone calls, no waiting on hold, no mixed messages, no wasting half a day or more waiting at home. 36 • OCT 18
Game-changing Business Model Stevens says work flow in traditional home service businesses is highly inefficient, which means everybody pays more for service than they should. “There are 30 or more steps that employees must take to complete a transaction from start to finish, most of them involving needless duplication,” he says. The billyGO app-based business model cuts the number of human touch points to fewer than five, including the hands-on work of the techs in the field. Every stage of the transaction is streamlined and highly automated, from scheduling and dispatching through payment processing. That reduces administrative time and slashes operating costs by about 30 percent, a huge reduction that differentiates billyGO from other service providers. The result is that consumers get the dual benefits of more control of their time and reduced pricing. While lower prices are baked into the billyGO business model, the overriding objective is to get the job done right the first time, as efficiently as possible. “Everybody likes a bargain; great service doesn’t have to come at a premium price, no matter where you live,” Stevens says. Reduced overhead has a big impact on employees, too. SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE
Everybody likes a bargain; great service doesn’t have to come at a premium price, no matter where you live. “Our high efficiency allows us to attract top professionals and provide industry-leading training and opportunities for advancement. Well-trained employees with strong skills get the job done faster without the need for do-overs,” Stevens adds. How billyGO Works – it’s about time! Try to think of a time you’ve heard a plumbing company say, “Please don’t call us.” That’s the message from billyGO. Use the app to schedule your own APPointment in one-hour timeslots, such as 8-9 a.m. or 1-2 p.m. billyGO’s technology makes scheduling quick, easy and so efficient that the company guarantees appointment times. If the technician is late, billyGO deducts from the price of the service. The app automatically assigns billyGO techs to jobs using an algorithm and then notifies the customer. All billyGO technicians are carefully-screened employees, not contractors. Customers receive the name and photo of who will be coming to their homes and can track location and movement along the technician’s route using the app. billyGO launched in August with full-service residential plumbing and will add more services next year. Stevens says public response has been enthusiastic and not just by homeowners – realtors find it especially convenient.
Stevens is excited about bringing his new business to his old Northeast Tarrant neighborhood. “We are locally owned and operated, unlike some of the big-name home service companies you see on TV all the time,” he says. Southlake Style readers get $59 off their first billyGO service by using code SLSTYLE59. Visit billyGO.com to download the app to your mobile device.

THE GREATEST CHALLENGE… I overcame was keeping an eye on the competition but not allowing it to consume me. Business owners often get distracted worrying about what others are doing. While you must be aware, you must establish the best business practices for you. MY MOST REWARDING MOMENT WAS… was when an employee who was applying for college was tasked with writing an essay about someone who inspired her. And she selected me. In that moment, I saw my evolution and myself. I realized I had gone from a student to a teacher. It was a rewarding role reversal.

hen Patti Johnson reminisces on 2004 – the year she started PeopleResults – her tone is much lighter than the workload she was carrying at the time. Her experience was a far cry from her senior executive position with Accenture and a far cry from where she is now — a published author and the CEO of a company that consults clients such as Fortune 100 companies Microsoft, 7-Eleven, Frito-Lay and McKesson. “When I first started, I had to learn to do a lot and figure things out for myself. I always laughed that a team meeting was talking to myself in the mirror. It was a shock to my system, but it was very good for me.” So how did she do it? How did a small town girl from Ponca City, Oklahoma, end up in Southlake to become the CEO of her own company and also a leading expert in her field? The obvious qualities come to mind: hard work, dedication, intelligence. But for Johnson, there was something more – a lifelong fascination with what made people tick.
FROM SORORITY CHAIR TO SANGER-HARRIS For someone who has been quoted as a consulting and human behaviour expert in the “New York Times,” “Wall Street Journal” and “MONEY Magazine,” Johnson’s academic background would more likely have her writing the articles than being quoted in them. She majored in journalism at Oklahoma State University. “My path took me a different direction,” she says. “You have to pick a major, so you kind of have to put yourself in a box.” In spite of venturing a slightly different direction, Johnson can still see the groundwork being laid for a life of consulting. These interests even manifested through her extracurriculars as membership and rush chairwoman for her sorority. “It was the first time that I had that whole leadership experience and learned how to create an event that will make people feel connected,” Johnson recalls. “That was an early experience where I thought, ‘OK, there’s something about this that I really like.’”

As many recent college graduates do, Johnson still had plans to form a career related to her major. She got an offer from a public relations firm, but it ended up being $4,000 less than an offer from Sanger Harris to be a part of their junior executive program. While the salary difference may seem obsolete now, the decision helped straighten her career path into what she was truly interested in. “I got exposure to all these amazing leaders and got responsibilities that put me totally in over my head,” Johnsons says. “I was so young, but it was so good for me because I had to figure it out.” She stayed with the company for five years. She credits the time for exposure to great leadership. The program was formed in such a way that she did rotations in different roles and had responsibility for college recruiting. Johnson got a small sampling of experiences that, unbeknownst to her, were shaping her career early on.
‘A T O TA L C O R P O R AT E G I R L ’ About five years out of college, Johnson went to work for Accenture, or at the time, Andersen Consulting. She worked there for 16 years moving her way up the ladder. Before she took the leap to start PeopleResults, Johnson was pretty comfortable, albeit working like crazy. “I was a total corporate girl,” she says. “At Accenture, I had an assistant, I had a team, I had access to everything and a lot of financial security and benefits – the whole thing.” As a senior executive, Johnson was instrumental in creating global talent programs and consulting clients on complex changes. And while she refers to some of the years at Accenture as ‘career dog years,’ she also credits the experience for accelerating her career. “For me, it lifted me up,” she says. “There’s no way I would have started my own business or had the ability to do what I’m doing now if I hadn’t had that experience at Accenture.” The standards at Accenture were high and the work was fastpaced. But for Johnson, those are almost ideal work conditions. She thrived even though she was often the only female leader in the room. Her confidence grew with her experience along with her drive to “figure things out.” It’s far more impressive to note that while she was moving up the ladder at Accenture, she was starting a family. She and her husband Jim got married in 1988 – for those less mathematically inclined, they are celebrating 30 years this year – while she was still at Accenture in Dallas. Two years after that, they had their first child together, another child six years later. In the midst of so many life changes, Johnson’s work life was ramping up as well. She was traveling more, taking care of global accounts. And, of course, there was the move. Up until her oldest son reached school age, the family had been living in Las Colinas. While looking for a good school for him, the Johnsons turned their attention to an up-and-coming suburb: Southlake. “Southlake was a little further out back then,” Johnson says. “There was a Cici’s Pizza and then nothing. But everybody was telling us it was going to be amazing.” So, 21 years ago and two years before the opening of Southlake Town Square, they made their move into what felt like the country. They’ve been here ever since. Johnson’s two sons, Will and Patrick, were Dragons from elementary school onward, and the amount of green in her wardrobe is still a testament of that. You just have to jump in.” Thanks to a broad network and her solid expertise, Johnson’s first client was PepsiCo. When she hit that awaited year mark, she just kept going. By the 18-month mark, she knew that if she was going to continue down this road, she was going to need a team. “Even after the first year, I don’t ever remember thinking ‘Eh, I don’t know if I’m going to keep doing this,’” Johnson says. “I had control in my life. I still worked a lot, but I had control.” Fast forward, even through the recession, and PeopleResults continued to grow. Along the way, Johnson further developed self-reliance. When she only had herself to turn to, she had to answer all of the tough questions, such as how to set prices on services. Now, with a team of 15 and a network of consultants to aid in projects – there are often over 30 people working for PeopleResults - Johnson continues to stay close to her clients. Is she just as busy? Oh yes, but she likes it that way. “I like a lot of stuff going on,” she says. “It has been my normal for so long that I don’t view it as stress. A wedding, two sons and a move to Southlake later and Johnson was still rising as a global consultant for Accenture. And while the likes of Sheryl Sandberg make ‘leaning in’ seem like a breeze, Johnson acknowledges the challenges that come with being both career-driven and a mom of two. “I always tell young women, you have got to have a partnership in your careers,” she says. “You can definitely do it, but it takes coordination. There was a time when every Sunday night my husband and I would sit down with our calendars and say ‘OK, you’ll cover basketball practice, and I’ll go to the parentteacher meeting.’ We just tried to plan everything out. You can’t wing it.” Beyond planning, being there for her kids took a level of simply intentionally placing priority on her sons and their activities. “I would treat my kids’ schedules with as much or more respect than a client meeting,” Johnson says. “So I got really good at not apologizing for being a mother.” She upholds this practice and way of thinking even today, with two grown sons, her stepson, Matt, and stepdaughter, Allison. While everyone is spread out across the country, they all come together as one big family for a vacation each year. “We are definitely all still a close family,” Johnson says. “It’s so fun going on these vacations now because the kids really love spending time together.”

hile we all love Tex-Mex, finding authentic Mexican restaurants can be a challenging task. So when owner and chef Mario Letayf and his wife moved to Southlake in 2011, they knew they had potential to bring something fresh to town. They got to work and opened their first U.S. restaurant, Cinco Tacos Cocina, in Addison. This was not Letayf’s first venture into the industry. He opened his first restaurant, a French-inspired bistro named La Bonne in Mexico, back in 1990. He’s been trying out new concepts and honing in menus for a little under three decades. Even though he cooked for Americans who traveled down to Mexico on vacation before,
Cinco Tacos Cocina was his first look at what average Americans’ expectations were for the culture’s dishes. Now, he’s putting an emphasis on elevating simple dishes with his bold combinations of flavors and high-quality ingredients. Dive into his distinctive dishes by ordering the Panela Cheese Zara to start. The grilled panela marinated in soy, garlic, mustard and chipotle sauce and served with guacamole and corn tortillas may sound like an unconventional appetizer, but Letayf says this creamy cheese is a go-to in regional dishes and is often found at Mexican markets. For a lighter option, try the Michoacán Fresh Tuna Tostadas topped with guacamole, fresh ahi tuna, spinach chiffonade, citrus soy sauce and a creamy chipotle dressing. Served as a

plate of four, these bites give off that crunch you expect in a tostada while also balancing the light aromatics of citrus. As the previous owner of a Mexican seafood restaurant, Mario knows how to work with fish to create sophisticated flavors. Take his ceviche selection. With four choices on the menu, Ceviche Verde, Aztec Shrimp Ceviche, Shrimp Cocktail Ceviche and Tropical Seafood Ceviche, diners can enjoy the fresh fish while also taking in the nuances that make each dish shine – whether it be a marinade with a hint of heat or an ensemble of fresh fruits. “In Mexico, we do a lot of ceviche,” Mario explains. “It’s sold everywhere in Mexico and people love it.” Their mains show their efforts to present quality ingredients in classic dishes. Instead of serving up ground beef in a cold tortilla and calling it a taco, the menu sports Rib Eye Tacos, two planchada quesadillas topped with thinly sliced rib eye. That extra attention results in a mouth-watering dish that melts in your mouth. The house specialties each revolve around a wellcooked protein that’s accented with fresh toppings. Bolo’s Mahi, a grilled piece of fish served with white rice and fresh avocado pieces tossed in Chile de Arbol olive oil, roasted garlic and jalapenos, provides both subtle spice and overall freshness to make each bite feel light. The Salmon Poblano, grilled marinated salmon served with Poblano pepper, corn, onion and a cheese garnish topped with a black bean chipotle sauce and fried spinach, provides that flakey texture the protein needs while still adding in hearty flavors. While their menu offers a “Tex-Mex Corner” for those who want to stick to what they know – whether it is typical enchiladas or quesadillas, there are still plenty of high-level options for those who want to try something new. Their grilled octopus, served with black beans, and Monterey scallops come out well-cooked and perfectly seasoned. “Our menu has something that will accommodate everyone. From a simple taco to our signature salmon, we just execute our food to the best of our ability,” Mario says. Even though margaritas were not a big aspect of Mario’s drink menus in Mexico, he now offers 11 signature selections for his guests; however he is still sticking to his roots because even though there might not be a frozen margarita machine behind the bar, there is a gourmet espresso machine ready to whip up lovely lattes – just like he did at Bonne back in the day. Plus, there are plenty of premium tequila flights for those who want a sippable array of Mexican spirits. Save room for dessert because the Dulce de Leche Cake is a must. With a spongy cake and sweet topping, it’s the perfect treat – and sugar boost – you need before heading back to Southlake.

Totally Thai NAPA Thai Cuisine Offers Bona Fide Eats For Local Diners After opening restaurants in Dallas and Fort Worth, executive chef Eddie Thretipthuangsin – known as chef Eddie T. – ventured west to bring Eastern flavors to Colleyville. Now, he is venturing back to his roots with his latest concept, NAPA Thai Cuisine. Located in the same spot as his last restaurant – Sai Fine Asian Bistro, which offered up an array of Asian dishes – NAPA still serves up the decedent dishes fans have come to expect. But his current menu now focuses on Thai flavors that ring true to chef Eddie T.’s upbringing. “Basically we changed the entire restaurant,” Eddie T. explains. “The whole concept is more straight-up Thai cuisine.” With shareable appetizers like the Fried Brussels Sprouts, halved pieces served crispy with shallots and tamarind chili sauce, and their signature NAPA’s Shrimp, lightly breaded shrimp served with garlic, cilantro and sweet plum sauce, it’s easy to find a few plates that will keep everyone satisfied. But save room for their famed Duck Tamarind. The roasted duck spends hours being cooked down to render out the fat and crisp up the skin. The end result: blissful bites of tender meat served with crunchy textures, seasonal vegetables and chili tamarind sauce. While their mains feature a wide range of proteins, this plate is one that will have you coming back for more. Round out the tasteful night out with one of their beautiful desserts, like their elegant Green Tea Cheesecake topped with fresh fruit or their Mango Sorbet served in a stemmed glass. The new concept also puts a higher focus on the aesthetics. NAPA’s renovated interior showcases calming color schemes and beautiful décor, which helps guests feel like they are truly being treated to a fine dining experience. “When you go out to eat, it’s not just about the food,” Eddie T. says. “We want our guests to experience the feel of hospitality, our ambiance and get that relaxed and comfortable feel.” Its atmosphere has inspired many locals to make NAPA their go-to date night spot, which has harbored this intimate vibe that lingers through the space. “We want to be a true neighborhood gem,” Eddie T. says. “Every weekend, the tables are greeting each other because they all know each other. LOCAL MORTGAGE LOAN ORIGINATOR STARTS SOUTHLAKE YOUNG PROFESSIONALS GROUP
T
he median age in Southlake is 42, according to the U.S. Census. When you factor out school-aged children, you’re left with a fairly small sample size of people under 40. Rachel Porter, a native to Southlake, recognized that there was no outlet in town specifically for people her age to network and connect. A fairly recent graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Porter decided to take action. This summer, with the help of the Southlake Chamber of Commerce, she launched the Southlake Young Professionals Group. They have been meeting every month and invite anyone under the age of 39 to come join the fun. I HAVE LIVED IN SOUTHLAKE … for as long as I can remember! My parents moved here over 20 years ago, when Town Square was still home to cows and horses.
success, with over 50 attendees. Ever since, we have been developing the group and ensuring we add value for all young professionals in the area at our events.
I STARTED WORKING FOR RED DIAMOND HOME LOANS… after experiences in a variety of jobs and internships through high school and college. My dad, Mike Porter, started Red Diamond Home Loans in 2015. I was heavily recruited by my sister, Kelsey, and just couldn’t say no!
THE MAIN EVENT IS CURRENTLY… our monthly happy hour, which occurs the second Friday of every month from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Here, young professionals in the area get to network and mingle with likeminded individuals. This is a great place to make both personal and professional connections, as well as find opportunities to get involved in the community.
AN AVERAGE DAY OF WORK IS… hopefully very busy! I spend a great deal of time on the phone with clients and Real Estate agents ensuring all the loans in progress are moving smoothly. I also strive to do networking events, office visits and one-on-one meetings to constantly be expanding my network. I BEGAN ATTENDING NETWORKING EVENTS… around Southlake in early 2018 and met some great young professionals at Southlake Chamber of Commerce events. My parents, Mike and Mary, were both members of the Southlake Chamber, which is how I originally became involved. I met some great young professionals at events such as the Southlake Relationship Networking Group led by Ryan Peabody, the Monthly Luncheons and ribbon cuttings for local businesses. From these experiences, I knew we had plenty of great individuals to get involved! THE IDEA TO START SOUTHLAKE YOUNG PROFESSIONALS … came from Peggy Martin, a local area realtor and family friend. I was at a happy hour event Peggy hosted when she introduced me to her son, Ross Martin, 23, and friend, Haley Fuller, 23. Peggy suggested we speak to the Southlake Chamber of Commerce about organizing a group of young professionals to connect with others and increase our involvement in the area. We collaborated with the Southlake Chamber of Commerce, and the rest is history! IT HAS BEEN … amazing! We are so lucky to have the support of the Southlake Chamber of Commerce and the entire community. The kick-off event was a huge
THE GROUP’S AGE CAP IS 39 BECAUSE… we followed suit of similar young professional organizations in DFW. This age allows for a variety of participants, while maintaining a focus on the connection and development of the younger generation. I THINK IT IS SO IMPORTANT… for young professionals to connect and support each other. Whether we are generating business referrals, networking for career opportunities, or simply making new friends, this is a special place for us to connect with likeminded individuals. We also have a widely diverse group of industries represented, which allows us to expand our network in ways we may not be able to without this group. WHEN I’M NOT AT WORK, I’M… riding horses! I showed hunter/jumper horses all over the country throughout high school and professionally before beginning my career in mortgage banking. Riding is my passion, and I am at the barn any chance I get. In high school, I traveled across the country showing at nationally recognized hunter/jumper horse shows. I qualified and competed at ASPCA Maclay Finals and USEF Medal Finals, two of the highest-level equitation competitions in the nation. Now, I limit my riding to the weekends and work very hard during the week to be able to do so. It will always be my passion, and I am so lucky to continue to ride today!

e it a family vacation, romantic getaway, birthday party or a trip on a whim, these tree houses are easily accessible and all aloft trees in the great state of Texas. If your ideal morning is enjoying a cup of coffee to the soundtrack of nature, do one better and join the birds in their leafy homes. If you or your kids feel inspired to wind through canopies, like Tarzan, some of these destinations feature breathtaking zip lines. Perhaps the most stunning feature that each lofty lodge shares is comfort. You won’t be sacrificing luxury to roost above the rest.

house and Bear Creek Hollow Treehouse. Each has its own style and feel. The Majestic Oak is aptly named for its surrounding trees that hold it two to three stories above the ground. Fully equipped with a kitchenette and living area, you’ll find yourself wondering why you don’t live here. The Bear Creek Hollow Treehouse is above its namesake creek. It features a back patio where you can relax and drink in the view. Both houses can sleep up to six people comfortably, so bring the whole family! Did we mention that you’re welcome to bring fishing gear for the property’s well-stocked pond or that you can snag that perfect Instagram photo in the surrounding lavender fields? Savannah’s Meadow has something for everyone, including the kids, if they’re inclined to enjoy the company of Simon the donkey and Henry the goat. The property also has plenty of trails to explore and a hot tub and pool for when you are ready to relax. savannahsmeadowllc.com

Treehouse Utopia Aptly named, Treehouse Utopia has a diverse offering of homes. The name is appropriate for two reasons: The getaways are in Utopia, Texas, about 80 miles west of San Antonio, and they are truly perfect havens away from it all. Each tree house accommodates two people and features a full shower. Two of the tree houses, the Chappelle and the Chateau, also include full claw foot tubs for the ultimate treetop bubble bath. The Carousel and Bibliotheque tree houses finish out the four and are equally as stunning. Each one has unique stained glass window in some part of the house. Perched up in gigantic cypress trees and delicately decorated, theses houses look like something out of a fairy tale. The Chateau, for example, is two stories and has a 400 square-foot deck. A winding staircase is housed in a turret that leads to the master bedroom, which is large enough to house a king-size bed. The Bibliotheque (French for library), as the name suggests, is home to dozens of pieces of literature. It is a bookworm’s dream. The Carousel is decorated in theme with its name as well and has a more whimsical feel than the rest. The Chappelle (French for chapel) has a stunning floorto-ceiling arched window, reminiscent of gothic chapel architecture. Whether you’re a romantic or a child at heart, these stunning tree houses are sure to leave you daydreaming. treehouseutopia.com
Cypress Valley Canopy Tours A zip line and a wedding venue all in one? Count us in. This captures the beauty of Cypress Valley. It is elegant enough to inspire nuptials and fun enough to evoke squeals as you cruise through the canopy. Located in Spicewood, Texas, about 30 minutes outside of Austin, Cypress Valley features two large tree houses, the Lofthaven and the Nest, and two smaller ones, Juniper and Willow. The latter two can comfortably sleep two and have shared outdoor restroom facilities. The Lofthaven and Nest, on the other hand, are all-inclusive and nothing short of impressive. The Nest is reminiscent of “Swiss Family Robinson” and can accommodate up to six guests. It features two bedrooms, a kitchen, a connecting private bathhouse and possibly the best view on the property. The Lofthaven is perfect for a romantic getaway and features a beautiful ancient cypress tree growing through the middle of the house and a rock grotto waterfall-filling soaking tub in the private bathhouse. If you get a little heated from zip lining, cool off in the onsite vortex-fed pool or private lake, depending on rainfall. No matter if you’re looking to go big or small, the variety of tree houses has it all. cypressvalleycanopytours.com

t the 2018 National Hockey League Draft, hosted for the first time in Dallas at the American Airlines Center, Wendy O’Reilly sat alongside loved ones waiting to hear her son’s name come across the speakers. All of the family’s friends and family from far and wide filled the stands and sat in anticipation. No one knew when the Carroll alum Ryan O’Reilly would be called or where he would be called to play. All they could do was wait. Then, in the fourth round as the 98th overall pick, the Detroit Red Wings head scout took hold of the microphone and started announcing, “From Southlake, Texas...” and the crowd roared. Locals started to cheer and gave the homegrown hockey player an ovation as he continued on his athletic career on a higher level in his honorary second hometown. While his parents, Wendy and Jim O’Reilly, have been longtime Southlake residents, the self-proclaimed hockey mom lived in Detroit with her sons, Michael, Brendan and Ryan, for a year. The three brothers took advantage of the local youth hockey teams in the Metroplex, but with their busy travel schedules consistently taking them north, the O’Reilly family knew it would be best for the boys to be closer to the action. So, in the summer of 2012, Wendy packed up the kids and moved across the country.

Ryan meets Kris Draper, Red Wings’ assistant general manager
Parents are often known for making sacrifices and putting their kids before themselves. Not all parents would leave everything behind to jet across the country and help their children live out their sports dreams, but it’s exactly what the stay-at-home mom did. Jim kept things going in Southlake and continued providing for his family as the Senior Vice President of Business Development at National Bankruptcy Services, and Wendy ventured out on the “Detroit Adventure” with the boys, which led all three to play hockey on a higher level and landed one in the NHL.
FINDING THE SPORT Michael, Brendan and Ryan all started skating young. And before Ryan hit the ice, he spent years watching his older brothers play. “At a very young age, I was going to the ice rink for my two older brothers’ practices and games, and then I asked my parents to let me play hockey as well, and they enrolled me in a learn to skate program,” Ryan says. “I loved the speed of the game and that you were always involved in the play.” As each got more involved with the sport, moving from youth hockey to travel teams to junior elite leagues, the O’Reillys flew all over the country to compete in hockey-heavy states like Pennsylvania, Minnesota and Michigan. There just wasn’t a lot of local competition down south at the time. “When they were playing youth hockey like that, they didn’t have a lot of other teams to play here. It was like a hockey island,” Wendy explains. “We had a top team and then you had to fly everywhere else to play the others.” This meant Wendy got used to spending time on the road with at least one of her sons’ hockey teams. Or, sometimes, she would balance traveling with two boys playing in the same town but in different arenas against different teams. “At least once a month, one of them was flying somewhere to play,” Wendy says. “Sometimes they would play in the same tournaments, but they would be at two different rinks in the same town.” So when all three were at traveling age, Wendy decided it was time for a change.
M OV I N G N O R T H With tournaments taking them up north on such a regular basis, Wendy started to consider moving the boys up to have a central base in a hockey town. She knew one other mom who did the same thing a few years prior and had her reservations, but she took the plunge and kept an open mind to the opportunity it could bring. “I remember thinking, ‘Oh gosh, I can’t imagine that,’” Wendy says. “And when we were on the verge of doing that, we just said we would see how it would go. And it made financial sense for me to go up with the boys.” 90 • OCT 18

So right before Ryan started seventh grade, Wendy took the boys to Detroit with plans to stay for a year. With a 17-year-old, 15-year-old and 12-year-old, she still had her hands full, but she was able to travel as much as the boys needed – and by car instead of plane. And the O’Reillys only had to book one flight instead of five for the whole family to attend tournaments. “When we lived in Detroit, most of our games were played in the Detroit area, along with a few games within driving distance to Toronto or Chicago, so we didn’t have to travel as much that year,” Ryan explains. “My dad worked in Dallas and then traveled to Detroit for the weekends while my Mom stayed with me and my brothers in Detroit.” It might sound scary to pack everything up and head to a new city by yourself, but Wendy says she was able to come in and already know a set of the other hockey moms thanks to their previous traveling. And the boys had a chance to be the kids playing on the top level of the most popular sport in town – comparable to football in most Texas communities. “There was such a dense population of hockey fans,” Wendy says. “It was fun seeing their friends from school getting excited and wanting to come to their games across town.” After the school year and the oldest Michael moved onto a junior elite team, Wendy went from having three boys constantly on the traveling tournament circuit to two. So she knew it was the right time to come back home. “It was kind of seamless,” Wendy explains. “They fit right back into Southlake Carroll and went onto teams with coaches they already knew. We were right back in the same house. It was like we were on vacation in Detroit for a year.” While it seems wild now, looking back, Wendy would do it all again. “Since the boys were so happy, and they had a great experience, I would do it again,” Wendy says. “As a parent, you just kind of do whatever you need to do to help your child accomplish their goals. So, I just kind of took on that role. And it was fun!”
GOING PRO Brendan and Ryan both jumped right back into school. After Michael spent a season with the Palm Beach Hawks in the United States Premier Hockey League, he ventured off to Texas A&M University to join their collegiate team. Brendan spent a few years with the Tri-City Americans’ Western Hockey League before joining the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Saint John Sea Dogs last year. He also currently plays for McGill University’s collegiate team in Montreal. Ryan, the last to leave Carroll as a junior to join the Junior Hockey League, went from the Dallas Stars U16 team to the United States Hockey League’s Madison Capitols. He committed to play on the collegiate level at the University in Denver, a D1 program, starting in 2019. Funnily enough, Jim Montgomery, the UD coach who recruited him to play for the Pioneers, has since joined the 92 • OCT 18

Dallas Stars as the new head coach for the upcoming season. And now, Ryan is training with Detroit’s NHL team, the Red Wings. It was the home team he often looked up to while practicing for Detroit’s Little Caesars AAA Hockey Club, and he found out the news about his future with the Red Wings in the AAC, the home rink for the team he grew up watching. “It’s just poetic,” Wendy says. While it may seem like having three athletes playing on such high levels in different cities – different countries even – may pose a challenge, Wendy’s job makes it a little bit easier. She joined American Airlines four and a half years ago, right after moving back to Texas, which makes it a breeze to book a flight and visit her boys. “Before, I couldn’t just pop on a plane. I’d have to wait until I built miles up,” Wendy says. “Working for American has been a game changer.” She sacrificed a great deal to make it happen, but Wendy says it has all been worth it. “My whole ‘hockey mom’ existence has been focused on whatever was the best for them,” Wendy says. “I always wanted someone to be there cheering them on.” It’s nice to be able to see how far each of her boys has gone, but Wendy knows that hockey has done more than shape her sons’ careers. It also has built character. “Just seeing the young men they have become has made it all worth it,” Wendy says. “Hockey has shaped their dedication and their drive and their whole personalities. They are boys who are focused and driven, and they are hard workers.” But it definitely doesn’t hurt that the O’Reillys were able to celebrate Ryan’s next adventure with the O’Reilly’s biggest supporters. “Someone told us it was like we were bringing everyone in for a wedding,” Wendy says laughing. “It was seriously one of the biggest blessings.” Someday soon, Ryan will be back in Texas at the AAC playing in the NHL, even though he will sporting a red and white jersey rather than a green and black one. Regardless, Southlake will be eager to see its Texan hockey star hit the ice. SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

hout “Prost!” (German for “Cheers!”), and raise your beer at Southlake’s Oktoberfest celebration this month. While there, you can choose the experience you want — for example, will it be a weekend of sipping on beer and relaxing in the beautiful Biergarten or will it be a chance to dress up in Lederhosen and participate in the stein hosting contest? Either way, you will have a great time, as there are so many different activities to try out! After filling up on your favorite drinks and German food, like sausages and strudel, take a stroll through the handmade arts and crafts booths or listen to Le Freak performing Friday night and Time Machine on Saturday night. Little ones will love the children’s area – filled with themed activities, games and a petting zoo – and cheering on their favorite dog at the Weiner Dog Costume Contest, Race and Parade on Saturday.

Oktoberfest was originally created in Munich in the 1800s as a wedding celebration. Since then, it has evolved into an autumn festival with plenty of food, games, music and, of course, beer. Southlake has hosted its own version of this German festival for 17 years and boasts an annual attendance of more than 100,000 people! The Southlake Chamber of Commerce also created a free iPhone and Android app for the event with the latest information about music, events and activities, as well as a place to browse photos. Adults don’t have many chances to dress up in silly costumes and make unforgettable memories with their friends and family, so embrace the uniqueness that is Oktoberfest — it’s the next best thing to traveling to Germany this fall!

Are You ‘Ready For It?’ Experience Taylor Swift’s Most Impressive Concert Yet
T
he snakes are giant, the sparkly leotards are amazing and Taylor Swift is proving to the world with her “Reputation Stadium Tour” that she is unstoppable. The Grammy-winning pop princess puts on a show like no one else, complete with fireworks, fountains, choreographed dances, impressive costumes, a tilted stage and even wrist bands that light up to the beat of the music. For her fifth world tour, Taylor Swift is performing songs from her multi-platinum sixth album, “reputation,” which sold 1.2 million copies its first week. Its tunes address many of the rumors swirling around the mega star, including one particularly bad dispute where she was called a snake and bombarded with snake emojis on social media. Now, she is reclaiming her reputation, declaring the “old Taylor” is dead and the “new Taylor” is her real self, which she is finally revealing to the world. Of course, Swifties would argue they have always loved Taylor. She came on the scene as a country artist in 2006, where she became the youngest person to write and perform a number one song on the Hot Country Songs chart with “Our Song.” Her next album, “Fearless,” made Taylor the youngest Album of the Year winner at the Grammy Awards and won BestSelling Album of 2009. After releasing her fifth album, “1989,” she became the first woman to win Album of the Year twice. Her concert will be filled with as many heartfelt moments as there are impressive ones, and fans will love singing along to her newest hits “Look What You Made Me Do,” “Delicate” and “Ready for It?” as well as old favorites like “Shake it Off” and “Blank Space.” We hope this version of Taylor Swift is here to stay because we love her more than ever!

A DOLL’S HOUSE OCTOBER 12-NOVEMBER 4 WATERTOWER THEATRE | Dolls have the perfect lives with styled hair, fashionable clothes and pristine houses. But real life is not quite as flawless. In “A Doll’s House,” Nora and Torvald Helmer appear to have fairytale-like lives; however, Nora has a secret to hide: For years, she’s been paying off a secret debt obtained in a shady way, which saved her husband’s life. Now that he is better, Nora is being confronted by blackmail and pushed to reveal the truth. In the process, the couple realizes their lives may not be their own. This thrilling story was written in 1879 by Henrik Ibsen, but the message about trying to make our lives fit into perfect dollhouses is just as powerful today.
