more power to you You might see a surge in Wonder Woman costumes this Halloween. If the recordsmashing debut of “Wonder Woman” was any indication, people love strong females. The summer’s hit film surpassed $800 million at the global box office, closing in on the 10 biggest superhero films of all time, according to Forbes. Do you admire phenomenal females just as much in real life as on screen? You’ll love this issue—it’s loaded with inspiring women who are accomplishing all kinds of incredible feats in their careers, sports and beyond. Later this month, The Marq will be abuzz with empowered females at Southlake Style’s second-annual women’s luncheon. If you’ve ever doubted yourself, keynote speaker Merrilee Kick will set you straight—and straight up. (Great cocktails happen to be her specialty.) Before she started Southern Champion/BuzzBallz, a $20 million brand of spirits and pre-mixed cocktails, this Ernst & Young Winning Woman worked in jobs that spanned the red carpet to the classroom. In her journey to entrepreneurship, she was declined, rejected and dismissed, but what I like about Merrilee is that she didn’t back down; she stepped up her game. See her story in “That’s the Spirit.” Flip to our annual Women in Business section to get to know some local leading ladies. We also spend “Five Minutes With” Kendra Scott, who says, “I am a mom first, and balancing my commitment to my family with my commitment to our business is a challenge I choose to take on every day.” Ladies: Whether you channel your inner Wonder Woman through statement jewelry, killer heels (check out Luxe Review!) or supercharged ambition, more power to you.

FLOURISHING IN THE FACE OF FAILURE October 13, 2017 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The Marq Southlake | Catered by Scratch Kitchen MERRILEE KICK KEYNOTE SPEAKER Ernst & Young Entrepreneurial Winning Woman 2016 Kick has worked the red carpets of the Cannes Film Festival as a magazine editor, anchored the drive-time newscasts for CBS Radio and operated a marketing company producing hundreds of voice-over spots for television—all before becoming a teacher at Plano West High School. While grading papers one afternoon Kick had an idea that literally drove her to drink. Her idea to build a better beverage in a ball has caught on, so much so that she now calls the shots as the president of Carrollton-based BuzzBallz and Southern Champion LLC, the $20 million premium wine and spirits companies she founded in 2009.

DANIELLE VAUGHN FEATURED SPEAKER Life Coach, Meditation Teacher & Founder — FlyKids Yoga Before Vaughn became a transformational life coach, certified yoga and meditation teacher, and yoga studio owner, she helped grow a profitable company from the ground up, morphing it into a multimillion-dollar business. While she didn’t realize it at the time, the skills and tactics she gained in the corporate world eventually served as stepping stones to what has become Southlake’s original yoga studio for children: FlyKids. (The FLY in FlyKids stands for ‘freely love yourself’.)

I worked in the grocery business for 18 years, and I knew I didn’t want to do it forever. This book was one of the main books that inspired me to do something on my own. It is truly transformative. I’d recommend it to anyone. Nicholas Kaufman, certified sommelier and owner of Wine Fusion Winery

TURTLES ALL THE WAY DOWN JOHN GREEN OCTOBER 10 Join the Chase If the book title doesn’t grab your attention, the famed author’s name will. Fans of the recent novel-turned-movie, “The Fault in Our Stars,” will love bestselling author John Green’s newest release. “Turtles All the Way Down” centers on the daily life of Aza Holmes, a high school student with obsessive-compulsive disorder. Join her as she searches for a fugitive billionaire in promise a cash reward. Little else is known about the novel, but it will somehow involve an unexpected reunion and “Star Wars” fan fiction. This is Greene’s first time to write about a mental disorder that has affected him, so while the book is fictional, he says it is also personal.

STRANGER THINGS NETFLIX OCTOBER 27

THE MOUNTAIN BETWEEN US IN THEATERS OCTOBER 6

Would You Trust a Stranger? Are you sick of the plane crash movies that leave characters stranded on a deserted island? “The Mountain Between Us” may have a plane crash in the plot line, but it certainly isn’t a desert island movie. Starring Idris Elba and Kate Winslet, the movie begs the question: would you trust a stranger? Elba plays a Dr. Ben Bass, a surgeon who takes a charter plane after his original flight is cancelled due to stormy weather. Winslet’s character, Alex Martin, is a journalist who joins him. When the plane goes down, the two are the lone survivors and must rely on each other to get out of the High Uintas Wilderness amid injuries and harsh weather conditions. We’ve seen Winslet play a cold, stranded survivor before, so could this be the next Titanic?

14 • OCT 17

Things are About to Get Even Stranger Welcome back to the Upside Down. If you’ve managed to navigate the social media without hearing about this Netflix original, we’re impressed. The show features a cast of mainly children, but takes on a Stephen King-esque, thriller plot. Even though many of the actors were born in the 2000s, “Stranger Things” will fuel your nostalgia, as it is set in 1984 in the town of Hawkins, Indiana. The town is home to the mysterious Hawkins Lab that viewers got to see a little of in the first season. Fans were left with many questions, and while they hope for answers, little is known about the second season. All we truly know from the recently released trailer is this: things will only get stranger from here.

"WHAT'LL IT BE ? ""

Merrilee Kick asked the Southlake Style team as we gathered around the well-stocked bar at her company’s headquarters in Carrollton. The North Texas entrepreneur and mom of two isn’t one for conventional meetings—or for following a conventional career path. Kick has been a news anchor, a magazine editor and a teacher. She has managed a house-cleaning service, done voice-overs for radio and TV, and managed nonprofits. Along the way, she earned degrees in finance, economics and computer science, including an MBA to top it all off.

SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

Now, she’s president of Southern Champion/BuzzBallz, a $20 million brand of pre-mixed cocktails and premium spirits. Kick founded the business in 2009 with a goal to revolutionize the world of mixed drinks. It’s not easy to kick through the glass ceiling of the male-dominated beverage industry, but the multitalented entrepreneur has succeeded—and she continues to blaze new trails in the global beverage market. Southlake Style recruited Kick to be the keynote speaker at its second-annual women’s luncheon, “Flourishing in the Face of Failure,” October 13 at The Marq. During the summer, members of the Southlake Style team toured the Southern Champion/BuzzBallz distillery and warehouse, and chatted with Kick (over a few cocktails, of course) about success, setbacks and the power of perseverance.

AN INTOXICATING IDEA Kick has never been afraid to mix things up. One afternoon, while grading papers and sipping a cocktail by the pool, the former Plano West teacher and MBA student was distracted—not by the work, but by the glass. It seemed as if her libation could tumble into the pool or tip over at any moment. That’s what sparked Kick’s idea for BuzzBallz. What if there was a way to serve ready-to-drink cocktails in unbreakable, floatable plastic containers? It would let people enjoy their favorite beverages anywhere—the pool, beach, campground. Kick explored the BuzzBallz concept in her MBA thesis project, and after graduation, she decided to go for it: She wanted to bring her idea to life. “I remember one night making the decision I had to build this business for myself, and I couldn’t let it fail,” says Kick. “I was going to work myself to the bone to make it work, no matter what.” To get her business off the ground, Kick needed about $300,000 in funding. She applied for Small Business Administration loans and tried credit unions all over the Metroplex, but she was repeatedly turned down. Nobody had confidence that a woman could succeed in the maledominated beverage industry. Kick’s luck changed when she met two individuals at Green Bank in Richardson. “I attribute [some of my success] to Fredda Morgan and Dave Thomas at Green Bank who took a chance and gave me my first SBA loan to get started,” Kick says. With funding in place, Kick purchased equipment and transformed an old printing facility into a distillery and warehouse. As for the cocktails? Kick knew they had to be strong and good, like drinks she’d make at home. Each colorful BuzzBallz sphere contains 100-percent juices and either rum, vodka or tequila. With names such as Strawberry Rum Job, Choc Tease and Stiff Lemonade that’s “stiffer than ever,” you might blush when popping the top on one. And that’s okay with Kick; BuzzBallz basks in boldness. (If you haven’t tried one yet, they’re available in about a dozen nearby stores including Scooter’s Superstore at Kimball and Highway 114, and Grapevine Beer and Wine.) To bring BuzzBallz to market, Kick mailed thousands of letters to convenience stores and went store to store with a prototype. The first order shipped in 2010, and before long, sales were pouring in. Her first big celebratory moment was landing a Glazer’s distribution deal. “My first sale to Glazer’s for $75,000 was more than I made in a year as a teacher,” she says. SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

OCT 17 • 19

"MY LONG-TERM VISION IS TO BUILD A WORLDWIDE CONGLOMERATE BEVERAGE BUSINESS" - Merrilee As BuzzBallz expanded beyond Texas (the brand is now sold in 40 states and in China), Kick quit teaching to focus on building the business. Some thought a woman wouldn’t make it in the beverage business, but Kick was having a ball with her success.

IN GOOD SPIRITS To Kick, it’s a great feeling to arrive at her company’s headquarters and see her team—which includes her two sons, Alex and Andrew—already at work. “I like seeing all the cars in the parking lot and knowing that I’m responsible for them. I like giving them the protection, insurance, free lunch and comforts they need to like their jobs,” she says. “It’s so much fun, too! I get to drink on the job and wear jeans every day. I get to work with my kids and good people, and that is really rewarding.” The two-story BuzzBallz headquarters is top-ofthe-line in every respect, from the state-of-the-art robotics equipment to a bar and mezzanine area that overlooks the whole operation. And, much like Kick, the space bubbles over with personality. Walls are vibrantly hued and windows are playfully set askew. The place almost has a Willy Wonka feel—only it churns out booze instead of candy. “When you walk into our distillery, most people expect a dumpy little warehouse. Some people are surprised because they think just because I’m a woman I must be batching BuzzBallz in my kitchen at home,” says Kick. “It’s a world-class operation.” BuzzBallz is just one line of Kick’s business— Southern Champion also produces BuzzBallz Chillers (a wine-based line), BuzzBallz Shooterz (readyto-shoot drinks that include a shot glass with the bottle), plus a line of premium spirits. 20 • OCT 17

The buzz just keeps building. Southern Champion has racked up a multitude of awards over the years, including six new medals at the International Wine & Spirits Competition over the summer. The recognition that stands out as particularly meaningful to Kick, though, is when BuzzBallz won at the Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of America (WSWA) convention in Las Vegas shortly after Kick launched the company. “There was our little BuzzBall on display in a case as a Double Gold winner—something rarely won,” says Kick. “We also won in a blind taste test with all 50 judges saying we were number one. I screamed I was so shocked.” At WSWA, Kick landed 15 state contracts. “It was then I knew we were going to make it,” she says. “My son Alex and I went to dinner that night to celebrate. I had goosebumps.” SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

Last year, the spotlight shone on Kick herself as a female entrepreneur—she was named one of Ernst & Young’s “Winning Women.” The national program recognizes dynamic women entrepreneurs with high-growth businesses. So what did it take to grow BuzzBallz into a $20 million enterprise? There hasn’t been one path to profitability. “Great people who can do their job is the first part of the equation, but knowing what you want and knowing how to market and sell is the second part,” Kick says. “Communicating that vision regularly to customers is the third part.” Kick also drew upon her life experiences to build the brand. The daughter of two schoolteachers, Kick had a modest upbringing and admits fear was a key motivator in growing the business. She knew what it was like to be poor, and she didn’t want to struggle again. “My problem at first was believing in myself enough to do what I wanted to do. I was afraid I would go broke,” admits Kick. “I was afraid my husband would leave me and I’d be homeless. I was afraid I’d be poor and living under a bridge.” But deep down, Kick knew she wouldn’t allow herself to fail. She’s too strong for that. “I’m from a long line of strong women. I like strong women,” she says. “I like women who have gotten over the fear of their husbands and who have the willpower to make success on their own. They will make friends and alliances. They will make money happen. They will make success happen.” Kick recognizes that success is different for everybody. For her, success means living debt-free and taking care of her family by working at a job she finds challenging, fun and creatively stimulating. And, when she really thinks about, success also means having the freedom to spend time in the mountains, watch sunsets and sip wine with friends. “When I started the business, I had no idea it could be this successful,” Kick says. “My long-term vision is to build a worldwide conglomerate beverage business.” It takes a strong woman to take on the world, but Kick has just the spirit to succeed. PARK PLACE DEALERSHIPS DONATED $30,000 FOR ITS 30TH ANNIVERSARY Park Place Dealerships celebrated its 30th anniversary in a big way: by donating $30,000 to Momentous Institute, an organization that helps children reach their full potential. The funds were raised at last month’s inaugural Park Place Dealerships Luxury & Supercar Showcase, where ladies in stylish hats and gentlemen dressed in resort attire strolled the rolling hills of the Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas at Las Colinas to view some of the world’s most rare and beautiful automobiles. Guests were among the first in Texas to see the new 2018 Rolls-Royce Phantom, arriving straight from Pebble Beach. They also had the rare opportunity to get up close and personal with an extraordinary 1500-horsepower, $3 million Bugatti Chiron, while comparing the modern supercar to its vintage ancestor: a rare 1938 Bugatti which narrowly escaped demolition during World War II. ON-SITE PC SERVICES Trustworthy IT solutions for small businesses

W

hat comes to mind when you think of IT services? Long phone calls, being put on hold repeatedly, just overall dread? That’s not the case with On-Site PC Services. The Southlake-based, family-owned company offers a high level of customer service, dedication to the client at all levels and fast response times. “Our No. 1 source of referrals is from our clients for a reason,” says Brian Davis, founder and CEO of On-Site PC Services. “Without putting the customer first, using industry leading support applications and reducing down time for the client, it would be impossible to grow our business while also retaining over 94 percent of our managed service clients since 2001.” Davis started On-Site PC Services after leaving a large semiconductor corporation in Dallas. During his time in the corporate world, he noticed the trend in IT contract staffing as well as a market shift to the managed service model. He had always wanted to own his own business and be his own boss, so he took the leap. The result is a successful company that has provided IT services to small businesses for 16 years and counting. “We are 100 percent dedicated to small business clients,” he says. “The size of clients can range from five systems all the way to 100.”

It starts with the family at On-Site PC. “My sister Kelly handles operations and dispatching while my brother Casey is our lead engineer and the overall go to guy to keep the operations running smoothly,” Davis says. In addition, On-Site PC employs a group of highly skilled technicians. In the IT industry in particular, technicians must have a high level of patience, actively listen and effectively communicate to the client. Without those types of attributes you can’t make it in IT, and especially not at On-Site PC. “Without putting the customer first and proactively working to make sure issues don’t occur, there would be no On-Site PC,” Davis says.

We are 100 percent dedicated to small business clients. The size of clients can range from five systems all the way to 100. On-Site PC offers a variety of support packages that can be tailored for the needs of individual companies. After completing an initial discovery, On-Site PC will sit down with the client and go over the data. From there, they determine which package will work best for the client and come up with a game plan, which is individually customized to meet the needs and demands of that particular business/ client. “We understand time is money and the last thing we want to do is interrupt their business operations. Everything we do is meticulously planned out and effectively communicated to the client,” Davis says.

Fall is finally here and the weather is starting to cool down. While we Texans will never truly be snowed in, don’t let that stop you from barricading yourself in your home for a night in with Netflix. Binge-watching may not be the healthiest activity in the world, but you can always do a few crunches or planks while streaming, right? Or is that just something we all tell ourselves? Either way, as the busy holiday months rapidly approach, we won’t judge you for taking a little time out for yourself and your favorite shows. This month, a variety of shows are returning across a plethora of networks. Thankfully, if you need a refresher or just need to catch up, HBO Go, Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime have your back. Happy binging! BY MALEESA JOHNSON SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

“Black-ish”

“Curb Your Enthusiasm” No, we aren’t telling you not to get excited. Returning to HBO on October 1, Larry David is ending the show’s six-year sabbatical. The “Seinfeld” co-creator has played himself on the improvised series since fall of 2000. The last episode that aired was the episode 10 of season eight in 2011. If you’re anything like us, and have a hard time remembering what we had for lunch yesterday, much less what we watched six years ago, you may need a refresher. All eight seasons are on HBO Go, so watch away! You have 80 episodes to view, if you plan on starting from the first season. This is not one to watch with the kids.

“Poldark” Never overlook a good PBS show. This British period drama stars Aidan Turner as a redcoat Capt. Ross Poldark. The show begins with him returning home from the war to find his father had died and his sweetheart is about to marry someone else. His estate was in ruins and he is trying to save his family’s copper-mining business. Season three premiered October 1, but you can relive the past two seasons of drama on Amazon Prime.

60 • OCT 17

Renewed for a fourth season which aired on ABC October 3, “Black-ish” is a light-hearted sitcom that is centered on an upper-middle class African American family. Faithful viewers have had the joy of watching Dre (Anthony Anderson) and Rainbow Johnson’s (Tracee Ellis Ross) four kids grow up for the past three years. Dre is constantly endeavoring to create an ethnic identity for his family, whom he fears has experienced too much cultural assimilation. The show has been highly acclaimed, receiving Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for Outstanding Comedy. Revisit some laughs on Hulu before diving into the latest season. This is one you could probably feel comfortable watching with your middle school aged children.

“Scandal” It’s Shonda Rhimes time! If you told us you weren’t guilty of watching at least one of “Scandal” creator Shonda Rhimes’ shows, we’d be skeptical. As of September 28, #TGIT (Thank God it’s Thursday) on ABC is back. It got even better on October 5 with the return of “Scandal.” Watch as Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) dons more fabulous coats and downs even more wine all while running a crisis management firm. Pope, the former White House Director of Communications is back for a seventh and final season. If you’re already getting choked up about the end of an era, soothe your soul with some “Scandal” binge sessions on Netflix to rehash old times.

COMING

SOON :

“Arrow” Deep down, or maybe not so deep down, there is a superhero fan inside us all. That’s a good thing, since viewers are basically bombarded with Marvel and DC Comic characters everywhere they go. The CW’s “Arrow” is based on the latter, with billionaire bachelor Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell). He was presumed dead after a shipwreck, but survived on a remote island, an experience that changed him. Now he is back in Starling City, fighting corruption under a secret identity. Season five left a lot in the air, but perhaps the premiere of season 6 on October 12 will remedy some of the cliffhangers. Not sure where you left off? Refresh your memory on Netflix.

“Jane the Virgin” Friday the 13th seems like the perfect date for a spooky show to premiere. Instead, the CW presents the everzany Jane the Virgin, and we aren’t complaining. For those new to the show, Jane Villanueva had been raised with strict instruction from her grandmother to save herself for marriage. She held onto this teaching, but was accidentally artificially inseminated during a routine check-up. The show winds its way through hilariously bizarre storylines and a Telenovela style. Nothing is too dramatic for Jane the Virgin. Catch up on the villainous “Sin Rostro” plotline and crazy love triangles on Netflix.

“Stranger Things” Get into the Halloween spirit with this 80s nostalgic thriller. If waiting week by week for new episodes isn’t your thing, this Netflix original will be right up your alley as it releases the entire season on October 27. Don’t let the series cast of mostly children lull you into thinking it’s child-appropriate: this show is scary. Even if you aren’t a huge fan of jump-scenes, peer pressure may be enough to get you hooked, as this is one of the most buzzing shows of the year on social media. And fingers crossed, we’ll all find out what happened to Barb.

hile claw-footed tubs and stand-alone sink vanities have legs to stand on in the bathroom-decor world, it’s important to not overlook what they are standing on. A variety of tile trends are sweeping Pinterest and HGTV, and here are a few you may want to sweep yourself. Perhaps the most fun (and painstaking) part about decorating a bathroom with tile is the multitude of options. From tile colors to shapes to textures, there are plenty of ways to add pizzazz to one of the most essential rooms in the house.

isn’t limited to the floor. Black and white tile looks great in the shower or as a backsplash. It’s your call, but make sure to include pops of color to avoid looking like “101 Dalmatians.”

SOMETIMES IT IS JUST BLACK AND WHITE Remember a year ago when everything was all white? It appears to have played out, because a new pigment has been added. Black and white is simultaneously classic and modern. Even if it does go out of style, just wait a few years and it will likely be back. Black and white tile allows you to add some spunk to your bathroom without locking yourself into one particular color scheme. While it can be executed many ways, a common trend is to add small black tiles into the mix of dominant white floor tiles. Of course, this look

Michelle lost 46 pounds!† When I started with Medi-Weightloss® there really was something different about this program, and it worked for me. I was able to lose almost 30 pounds, from 157.4 down to 128, just three pounds shy of my goal weight of 125. There is no way to describe how much better I felt about myself and my health. Between 2010 and 2016, I restarted a couple of times, but I was not at a good place emotionally and didn’t do my part to be successful. Then one day, it clicked. I was 51 years old, 30 plus pounds overweight and a borderline diabetic. I wanted to live to meet my future grandchildren. I didn’t want to become diabetic. I was ready to do this. And as always, Medi-Weightloss® was there with open arms, lots of support, and was ready to help me succeed! What have I learned on my journey to health? Never ever give up. You have the power to do and be everything you dream of, especially when you have the tools and support of the people, like the ones I have found at Medi-Weightloss®.

ave you ever tried to pull off a Halloween costume with accessories you could wear again? Needless to say, witch hats don’t go with most everyday looks, unless your name is Elphaba. Splurging on shoes rarely needs an excuse, but Halloween offers a great out if you’re struggling to justify your expenditures. Pair these adorable Christian Louboutin Maripopump Butterfly Red Sole Pumps with any fairy outfit to further a winged theme. Or, if you’ve been searching for the perfect way to finish off a butterfly costume, look no further. These shoes will make you the talk of any Halloween party– in a good way! The best part? You don’t need wings to wear them again. Add the pumps to any business casual look for an outfit that will have your heart fluttering. These heels are made of nappa leather

and feature a 3D metallic butterfly motif on the metallic pointed toe. The signature red-lacquered outsole gives the unique footwear a familiar and recognizable touch, courtesy of Christian Louboutin. The French designer first introduced his namesake collection in 1991. His shoes have become a staple in the fashion world, and a must-have for stylish women worldwide. Not convinced? Picture the with an ankle pant and metallic gold jewelry. If any footwear screams feminine and powerful, it’s four-inch stilettos. What better for a woman in business, provided that business doesn’t require jogging. The butterfly motif can be accentuated for costume parties, or downplayed for a formal work look with a hint of whimsical. However and whenever you choose to wear these Louboutins, you are sure to give a fun, fashionable impression.

or anyone who has ever been overwhelmed by the intense amount of information available concerning weight loss and fitness, Absolute Recomp is here to save you some trouble. Absolute Recomp helps clients form a fitness plan tailored to the individual. It is more than a gym, as the staff at Absolute Recomp also offer nutrition plans. The team has done all of the research so you don’t have to. No more fad diets, Absolute Recomp offers real results that are tried and true, as is evident in their myriad of before and after photos from clients. All you have to do is show up. “The way we train is not tailored to group training,” says co-founder Nabil Saeed. “We’re not looking to make a quick buck off of clients. Our biggest goal is simply producing progress for the individual.” Saeed has learned from his own personal weightloss, a journey that inspired him to start the company with his brother. While a student at Southlake Carroll High School, Saeed weighed about 300 pounds and played football. He wasn’t happy with his weight, so he did something about it, and in nine to 10 months, he was down to 190. “By my junior year of high school, I looked really different,” he says. “A bunch of people were curious about how I did it. So I just started coaching people.” Saeed started the company in 2015 while he was a junior at Southlake Caroll. The Dragon graduate from the class of 2016 now plans on opening a second Absolute Recomp location next year. Absolute Recomp offers training to teens through young adults, ages 13-29. Saeed says many of his clients come from Southlake Carroll High School. In fact, 18 of the 22 starters last year for Dragon football were trained at Absolute Recomp, including seven Division 1 athletes. The pricing is simple. They charge $350 per month for 16 individual sessions, a nutrition plan and full access to the gym.

We’re not looking to make a quick buck off of clients. Our biggest goal is simply producing progress for the individual. Nutrition plans are formed by Absolute Recomp co-founder Nouman Saeed, who is also a Carroll grad. He received his degree in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Texas in Austin where he worked alongside dietitians for several of the college athletic programs. The program he develops for clients is based on metabolic capacity, training level, personal goals and physical attributes. The two brothers have a lot to offer through Absolute Recomp. When asked for one piece of weight-loss advice, Nabil Saeed gave an answer from personal experience. “Research,” he says. “Proper research. Really make sure that the research that you educate yourself with is legitimately conducted and properly done. Try to make sure everything is evidence-based.”

Come Fry With Me STEP RIGHT UP FOR DEEP-FRIED FUN AT THE STATE FAIR OF TEXAS

E STATE FAIR OF TEXAS 3921 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard Dallas 214.565.9931 BigTex.com

74 • OCT 17

verything is bigger in the Lone Star State, and the State Fair of Texas is no exception. Boasting more than 2.4 million visitors last year, it’s the country’s biggest state fair. The 24-day extravaganza that runs through October 22 in Fair Park packs in more than 100 daily attractions ranging from agriculture to art. But if you’re like us, the real draw is the food—the mindblowing, health-defying, belly-busting fare deep-fried to a golden crunch. Loosen up your Texas-shaped belt buckle; it’s time to get a taste of the glorious fried wonders of the State Fair of Texas. If you ask many Texans about their favorite fair food, the top dog is a hot dog— specifically one that’s dunked in cornmeal

batter and deep-fried on a stick. Since 1942, Fletcher’s Corny Dogs have been a signature part of the State Fair of Texas experience. During an average fair season, Fletcher’s sells nearly 630,000 corny dogs. We’ll stand in line to get our hands on one, but we’re definitely saving room for some of the fair’s over-the-top culinary concoctions. Last year, Fried Jell-O® and State Fair Cookie Fries stole the show. This year, palates are perked at the thought of Fried Texas Sheet Cake (a fresh-from-the-fryer brownie served with chopped Texas pecans, whipped cream and a fresh strawberry carved to mimic a Lady Bird Johnson rose), Texas Fajita Fries (deep-fried beef fajita strips served

in a bread cone with fried onions and jalapeños) and the Tamale Donut (a classic pork tamale hand-formed nto a donut shape and deep-fried to perfection). Intrigued? These are just a few of the 2017 Big Tex Choice Awards Finalists. Now in its 13th year, the awards competition invited State Fair concessionaires to pull out all the stops in developing newfangled twists on Texans’ favorite foods. The contest kicked off in mid-July and drew 47 entries. Ten finalists advanced to compete for the titles of “Best Taste – Sweet,” “Best Taste – Savory” and “Most Creative.”In the end, a judging panel comprised of a variety of local personalities and renowned chefs tasted their way through the entries to determine the winners. Who came out on top? The Gulf Coast Fish Bowl (a drinkable aquarium filled with candy gravel, alcoholic punch and Swedish Fish) won in the sweet category, and the Funnel Cake Bacon Queso Burger seized two titles: savory and creative. This Texas-sized king of all burgers is topped with bacon and queso, and sandwiched between two crunchy, powdered-sugar-dusted funnel cakes. Because, well, why not? In true Texas fashion, the Big Tex Choice Awards even had a philanthropic twist—all proceeds from the sold-out awards competition were donated to the State Fair of Texas Youth Scholarship Program. Folks got their fried-food fix and felt good about it. If you didn’t snag tickets to the awards ceremony, you have until October 22 to try the slew of new foods tantalizing Texans’ taste buds this year. Want to make a beeline for the Surfin’ Turfin’ Tater Boat or the Pinot Noir Popcorn? Pick up a visitor’s guide when you get to the fairgrounds to map out vendor locations. Or, plan your route in advance at BigTex.com. There’s a lot of ground to cover and a lot of foods to taste. With so many inventive and positively wacky options, we can’t think of a better (or rather, batter) way to get a taste of the Lone Star State. We’ll see you at the State Fair of Texas!

Blend, Bottle and Bring it Home Enjoy the fruits of your labor at Wine Fusion Winery

WINE FUSION WINERY 603 S. Main Street, Suite 304 Grapevine 817.442.8466 WineFusionWinery.com

76 • OCT 17

The next time you visit Grapevine’s historic Main Street district, you could sample a few wines—or you could make a bottle of your very own blend. At Wine Fusion Winery, you won’t find the usual spinsniff-sample winetasting experience. Here, wine connoisseurs and novices alike can blend their own wine and bring it home in a bottle. It brings a whole new meaning to BYOB. Wine Fusion is the quintessential wine destination. The full-service winery offers wine tastings, wines by the glass, light bites and tapas. The real sparkle, though, is getting to create something that’s uniquely yours. When you arrive for a wineblending class, the experience kicks off much like a science lab. The tables are set with beakers, graduated cylinders and measuring tools, and the space is open and bright with plenty of natural light. “We teach in a laid-back style and take a fun approach to wine,” says Nicholas Kaufman, certified sommelier and owner. “We tailor the class specifically to the group we’re teaching. We can go over ‘Wine 101’ things or really get into specifics such as winegrowing regions, climates and soil types.” You might come for the wine, but you’ll get an interesting lesson, too. Each wine-blending class begins with the allimportant tasting. Wine enthusiasts decide whether they want a red or white, sweet or dry wine, and everyone samples four or five wines. From there, participants get a crash course in wine—from grapes to bottle service in restaurants. “The best part of my job is teaching people,” says Kaufman. “I always tell people the more they learn about wine, the more they’ll enjoy it.” After the group selects the wine base, out come the beakers to blend the wine and the graduated cylinders to get the perfect percentages. From there, guests bottle and cork their master blend, and even get to name and label their wine. It doesn’t get more artisan than that. At Wine Fusion Winery, you can expect to spend time learning, tasting and having an all-around great time making your own special blend of wine. Handcrafted wine, a good buzz and fun with friends in the process? Sign us up.

The best way to enjoy fall’s favorite fruit? Covered in sugar and savory spices, and baked to perfection. The Brandy Apple Crisp at Winewood Grill covers all the bases of a traditional apple dessert, and then takes all the flavors up a notch. Made with fresh cinnamon-and-nutmeg-spiked Gala apples and a warm brandy caramel sauce, this dessert is a sophisticated twist on the caramel apple. POWER PLAYER

S

outhlake Carroll freshman Alexis Missimo sports a lot of burnt orange these days. She’s a fan of the University of Texas, but the 14-year-old soccer player doesn’t just dream of being a Longhorn one day—she has already committed to UT. The summer before her eighthgrade year, Alexis accepted a full soccer scholarship to play for Texas, making her the youngest women’s soccer commit in the sport’s history. Alexis is often called a phenom and a prodigy, and there’s no denying she’s a force on the field. The young athlete, who plays for

the Solar Chelsea club program, was recruited by every top D1 school in the country. She is also regarded as the No. 1 recruit for the Class of 2021 by TopDrawerSoccer.com, a site that covers college soccer and club soccer, and was a contender for the 2017 TopDrawerSoccer Player of the Year award, one of the most prestigious awards for youth players. But if you look beyond the impressive offers, rankings and accomplishments, you’ll find a ponytailed girl in cleats who simply wants to play soccer. “I just love the game itself,” she says. “I love passing the ball through to create goals.” Soccer isn’t only Alexis’ talent; it’s a passion that propels her to push limits, day in and day out.

A Rising Soccer Star Alexis committed to playing at UT five years before the start of her college freshman year. In the sports world today, student-athletes often receive full scholarships before the usual teenage rites of passage, such as taking the SAT or getting a driver’s license. Coaches are eager to scout 13- and 14-year-old athletes to fill their future rosters. Being recruited to play at Texas before eighth grade? Alexis chalks it up to her rock-solid work ethic. “I work really hard on and off the field,” she says. “It feels good to know my hard work paid off.” It also helps that Alexis’ family has a stellar soccer pedigree. Her father, Derek Missimo, was a multiple AllAmerica honoree representing the United States Youth National Team in the FIFA U17 World Cup. He also led the University of North Carolina in scoring for four consecutive years and is the university’s all-time leader in career points and goals. Alexis’ older sister, Gabriella (17), is a soccer powerhouse in her own right; she has also committed to play soccer for the University of Texas when she graduates from Carroll in 2019. “My sister was a bonus to go to UT, but I also love the environment, culture and staff—especially [head coach] Angela Kelly,” Alexis says. “And I’m excited about just being on TV on the Longhorn Network!” Like Gabriella, Alexis doesn’t play for the Lady Dragons, but has played select soccer for Solar since she was 10. (Regulations from the U.S. Soccer Girls’ Development Academy prevent 82 • OCT 17

players from participating in high school soccer.) Derek has coached for the Solar girls’ program since 2007 and over the years has helped more than 30 young athletes—including his own daughters—hit their D1 goals. He noticed early on that Alexis, who began playing soccer at age four, had ability beyond her years. “When she played with her age group, she was more advanced than that. By age seven or eight, there was a definite difference,” Derek says. Watching her big sister play sparked a fire in Alexis. If Gabriella learned something new, Alexis was right there learning, too. “Alexis wanted to see what the older kids were doing and replicate it,” says Derek. “She could keep up with the older kids; she loves to compete. I get more amazed each year because she has such a huge passion for soccer.” Alexis’ combination of talent, hard work and pure love for the game has opened up a world of incredible experiences—and all before high school. Alexis plays midfielder for the U.S. Under-16 Girls’ National Team, and in May, she traveled with the team to represent the United States in Belgium. “It was cool to go overseas and know I was representing my country,” says Alexis. After competing in Belgium, Alexis returned to Southlake and then jetted to Europe again in August—this time to Lyon, France. She spent nearly two weeks training with coaches from the renowned Olympique Lyonnais, France’s top women’s professional team. Alexis was part of an invite-only group, with only 32 of the world’s best players invited to receive training and coaching at the legendary club. Some of the world’s most celebrated soccer stars have played for Olympique Lyonnais, including Alex Morgan, the American soccer player, Olympic gold medalist and FIFA Women’s World Cup champion. Alexis didn’t take the invitation or the training opportunity lightly. “I’m so excited to work,” she said just days before her trip. “It’s a great

opportunity to play with a professional team.” The young recruit is always watching and learning from other players, eager to elevate her own skills. She especially admires Kristine Lilly, a retired American soccer player who played in five FIFA Women’s World Cups and three Olympic Games. “I really admire her,” says Alexis. “She was the best all-around player representing the U.S. for many years.” Alexis knows that if she wants to join the ranks of the world’s best female athletes, she has to be receptive to feedback. In fact, learning to accept criticism was one of the first lessons from her dad and big sister. “Gabriella taught Alexis early on not to be sensitive to criticism. She would say, ‘He’s trying to teach you a better way of doing this,’” Derek says. As the girls’ dad and coach, Derek also taught the importance of accountability, punctuality and responsibility. “I taught them that every decision they make will impact their long-term goals,” he says. “Coaching is a unique bond I have with my girls. It has definitely enhanced our relationship.” Derek wants for both of his daughters what all parents want: for their kids to be happy. “I want them to be secure in their goals and not let anything get in their way,” he says. “Girls have such wonderful opportunities nowadays. So many glass ceilings have been broken.”

A Future on the Field Alexis lives life like many Dragon student-athletes. She attends class at Carroll High School (math is her favorite subject), and fits in homework, training and dinner before her usual 10 p.m. bedtime. “Her schedule isn’t different from many athletes’ schedules,” Derek says. “What’s unique to her is how she can process it and have sustainability. She really loves soccer—it propels her to get through her studies.” When imagining her future, Alexis has high aspirations but also remains remarkably grounded. “I want to be a pro soccer player,” she says, “but I know I need a good education.” She envisions going into business one day and maybe owning a restaurant. With stars in her eyes and a soccer ball at her feet, Alexis is a girl who can conquer anything.

ou don’t have to choose between culture and the great outdoors this fall. All across the country, you can partake in visually stunning sculptures while enjoying the season’s vibrant colors (or at least comfortable temperatures). Here are a few places to take a stroll and find that good art doesn’t always live behind museum walls.

Laumeier Sculpture Park | Saint Louis, Missouri Just 20 minutes from the hustle and bustle of downtown Saint Louis, visitors can revel in the peace and tranquility of Laumeier Sculpture Park. Founded in 1976, it’s one of the country’s first and largest sculpture parks, boasting 60 sculptures set

along nature trails and grassy knolls. Each year, more than 300,000 visitors stroll the 105-acre park that features a variety of larger-than-life masterpieces. Here, guests can contemplate classic sculptures or ogle more interesting pieces such as a giant eyeball that’s more than 37 feet in circumference. Some of the sculptures even include small, touchable models and braille descriptions for vision-impaired guests. When you plan your visit, carve out at least an hour or two to explore the grounds. We suggest packing a picnic and taking the kids on a hike through the nearby woods. You can explore on your own, or join along on a themed tour led by Laumeier docents. If the idea of a traditional nature walk doesn’t excite you, embark on the Nature Trail Scavenger Hunt, a 1.6-mile, 40-minute route that tells a breathtaking tale of the park’s ecology, geology, history and art. The park is free and open daily, so bring the family (dogs are also welcome) and spend an afternoon enjoying art al fresco. Laumeier.org

Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden | New Orleans, Louisiana

If you want to venture off the beaten path of the typical New Orleans visit, bypass Bourbon Street and take a meandering stroll through the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden adjacent to the New Orleans Museum of Art. This gem of a destination features more than 60 works of art nestled along footpaths, reflecting lagoons and 200-yearold live oaks. Even if you’re not an art aficionado, you’ll be captivated by the incredible sculptures that effortlessly blend into the garden. Were the sculptures strategically placed in the garden or was the garden manipulated to support the art? You’ll want to perch on a bench or a soft patch of grass and ponder it. Spanning five acres, the garden offers plenty of intimate settings that allow visitors to reflect on each piece at their own pace. You don’t have to worry about crowds rushing you along; you can take your time and enjoy the mix of contemporary and classic pieces that delight at every turn. If a piece particularly moves you, go ahead and touch it—visitors are just asked not to climb on the sculptures. Kids are welcome, but dogs, bicycles, rollerblades and picnicking aren’t allowed. Want to get a different perspective on the sculptures? Rent a canoe or paddleboat and experience the gardens from a tranquil pond. The garden is open daily with free admission. Donated by the late Hollywood film director (Stark produced iconic films including “Annie” and “Steel Magnolias”) and his wife, the garden encompasses three distinct outdoor spaces, each one unique in its offerings. Featuring 28 modern and contemporary sculptures, you can perch on a secluded bench and soak in the sculptures, fountains and breathtaking views of the city skyline. Bring the family to peruse works of art in terraces as well as open spaces and gardens, which were designed with specific sculptures in mind. The garden is designed to inspire contemplation and conversation, so get ready for a little of both. Can’t jet away to L.A.? Take a virtual tour and listen to sculptors discuss their work, or hear Getty Museum conservators, designers and curators talk about their views on the sculpture garden. If business or pleasure brings you to L.A., don’t miss this incredible openair museum. It’s open daily with free admission. Getty.edu

CEO OF KENDRA SCOTT SHARES HER JOURNEY THROUGH ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND PHILANTHROPIC EFFORTS

H

er jewelry has become a staple in women’s accessories, but Kendra Scott, CEO and founder of Kendra Scott Design Inc., had more than her fair share of bumps along the road to success. We asked this inspiring mother of three boys to share her journey of building her Texas-based $1 billion company and her passion for giving back. I OPENED MY FIRST BUSINESS WHEN: I was 19, and full of desire to prove myself. When I learned the devastating news that my stepfather, Rob, had been diagnosed with brain cancer, I immediately left my freshman year of college and moved to Houston to support him during his treatment. During what would be the last year of his life, Rob inspired me to open my first business, a hat store where I designed and sold comfortable, fashionable hats for women undergoing chemotherapy and donated a portion of proceeds to cancer research. IN HINDSIGHT, I WISH: I could go back and tell my 19-year-old self that there are no mistakes in life. You will hit roadblocks on your way to success. The key to finding that success is pushing past them. Looking back now, I know that closing The Hat Box was far from a mistake. It was a bridge that took me one step closer to making my greatest dreams come true. I WAS INSPIRED TO START MAKING JEWELRY WHEN: I wasn’t finding the pieces I was looking for. I saw a white space in the market for gorgeous, quality jewelry made with genuine stones at an attainable price point. So, I decided to make my own.

and our “WOW!” customer service. That shift is what allowed us to take my business to where we are today. By the end of the year, we will have 75 stores nationwide. THE THREE CORE PILLARS OF KENDRA SCOTT ARE: Family, Fashion and Philanthropy, and have shaped my business, our culture and the decisions we make every day. Not only do we treat each other like family, we also live out our philanthropy pillar through our dedication to giving back. And no matter how large or successful we may grow to be, we will always look to those three core values as our foundation. MY PASSION FOR PHILANTHROPY BEGAN: with The Hat Box, and the moment my stepfather Rob spoke the three words that I’ve carried with me every day since: “You Do Good.” Even in the midst of his battle with brain cancer, he taught me that the most important thing I could do in life is use my talents to better the lives of others. That is why philanthropy plays such an integral role in both my professional and personal life to this day.

BEING A MOM OF THREE AND THE LEADER OF A GROWING BUSINESS WAS: an immense struggle, and one that I still face daily. Truthfully, some days I have no idea how I can get everything done. But I wouldn't have it any other way. I always say I am a mom first, and balancing my commitment to my family with my commitment to our business is a challenge I choose to take on every day.

SOMETHING SURPRISING ABOUT MY BUSINESS IS THAT: our office is made up of 98 percent women. I am proud to uphold a culture that supports a healthy work-life balance for the women – and men – in our office. Everything from our robust benefits package, which includes 100-percent paid parental leave and matched 401K, to unique perks like our in-house nail bar, fitness center, smoothie bar and paid philanthropy days, cultivate a friendly and inspiring work atmosphere. Down to the design of each of our office spaces, I want to make sure we are constantly fostering a culture that promotes transparency, collaboration and workplace pride.

THE FIRST TIME I REALIZED KENDRA SCOTT WOULD SUCCEED WAS: when we opened our first store. I wanted to create a unique store experience where customers felt at home, at ease, and always ready to come back. The response we got was unbelievable! People fell in love with our open, welcoming atmosphere

MY NO. 1 INSPIRATION TO PURSUE MY DREAM WAS: my Aunt Jo. As a gorgeous, energetic fashion director with impeccable style, she introduced me to the fashion world, and taught me about things like trend forecasting at a young age. She encouraged me to dream big and follow my passions, which inspired me to pursue my love of fashion.

It’s the Season of Love Sing along to your favorite “Rent” numbers

L

ove, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll are coming to town, as the 20th anniversary tour of the popular musical “Rent” stops by Bass Performance Hall this month. This Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning production is based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera “La Bohème.” It takes place in New York City in the 1990s, and follows a year in the lives of seven artists who are trying to follow their dreams. In addition to the struggles of young musicians, the show touches on the devastating effects of HIV/AIDS, drugs and other things, and reminds the audience to stay hopeful and to remember that love is the most important thing of all. Written by a young composer named Jonathan Larson, “Rent” first premiered in an off-Broadway theater in 1996. A few months later, it moved to Broadway where it stayed for 12 years, grossed more than $280 million in New York alone, and amassed a group of fans called RENT-heads. The musical’s success led to a world tour, a motion picture adaption, and now the 20th anniversary tour. Expect to hear all your favorite songs like “La Vie Bohème,” "Another Day,” “Out Tonight,” “Seasons of Love” and so many more. Many members of the original Broadway creative team are back to be part of this cast. They have worked hard to bring this show back to life, appealing to a new generation of fans while keeping the same themes of diversity, friendship, acceptance and love. If you are looking for an uplifting night that will leave you with songs stuck in your head and a celebration-of-life mentality, then this show is for you.

Calling All Hooligans Musical sensation Bruno Mars takes the stage this month

F

lashy costumes, funky dance moves and fierce music awaits you this month when pop superstar Bruno Mars comes to Dallas. The Grammy Award winner and multi-platinum artist is visiting the American Airlines Center during his 24K Magic World Tour to promote his most recent album with the same name. Hooligans (a.k.a. Bruno Mars’ devoted fans) will love watching this brilliant man sing and dance perfectly in step with his backup musical ensemble, never missing a beat. In addition to the popular “24K Magic” single, Bruno Mars will also be performing hits “That's What I Like,” “Uptown Funk,” “Locked Out of Heaven” and “Marry You” as well as his lesser-known-but-still-catchy R&B, soul and funk songs from his newest album. Bruno Mars, born Peter Gene Hernandez, has always loved music. At a young age, he performed at various venues in his hometown of Honolulu, Hawaii. During his career, he has impersonated Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson live, collaborated with B.o.B on “Nothin’ on You” and co-wrote “Right Round” with Kesha and Flo Rida among

other things. However, it wasn’t until he signed with Atlantic Records and released his first studio album “Doo-Wops & Hooligans” in 2010 that he became a household name. Since then, Bruno Mars has sold more than 115 million singles around the world and has seven No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 list. He is an extremely versatile performer who plays several instruments, and produces and choreographs his shows. If you love multi-talented musicians, captivating dance performances and electrifying music, then you don’t want to miss this concert. Come “Just the Way You Are” and leave a new person, transformed by the magic of Bruno Mars!
