take comfort Fall brings with it more than changing colors and fashion (hello boots and big sweaters!). It also brings a bounty of warm, comforting foods. You know the ones—the homemade pies, creamy soups, pumpkin everything. Suddenly, the green juice I loved all summer doesn’t seem nearly as enticing as a pumpkin latte with a sprinkling of cinnamon on top. Autumn is also about getting back in the kitchen, turning up the oven and filling the house with sweet, spicy aromas. In “Fresh is Best,” we highlight a few places around the Metroplex to pick your own fall harvest. It’s worth the road trip when you return with a bushel of apples or a bagful of pecans just in time for the holiday baking season. Whipping up her own homemade treats is Southlake resident Stephanie Keusch’s specialty. As owner of Bella Bakery, Keusch creates dreamy delights and pretty pastries of all kinds: birthday cakes, biscotti, and her personal favorite, macarons. Get to know this beauty-queen-turned-baker in this month’s “Five Minutes With.” If you have a taste for nostalgia this time of year, take a stroll down memory lane in our photo essay, “All American.” Our Creative Director, Bruce Sons, commissioned photographer Mike Krause of BluDoor Studios to capture a glimpse of the old-school charm of one of North Texas’ beloved soda shops, Big State Fountain in Irving. We discovered that classic comforts like juicy burgers or chocolate malts never go out of style. Grab a cool concoction or a cozy mug of something warm and settle in. Our annual food issue (complete with a Dining Guide chockfull of some of the area’s best local restaurants) will whet your appetite for a flavorful fall.

LITTLE FIRES EVERYWHERE CELESTE NG SEPTEMBER 12 Is Your Grass Greener? Award-winning author Celeste Ng grew up in the Ohio suburb of Shaker Heights, which turns out to be the perfect setting for the characters in her latest novel, “Little Fires Everywhere.” No one sets a better example of following the straight and narrow than fictional character Elena Richardson, a resident in Shaker Heights. In her novel, Ng paints a picture of an idyllic, master-planned community inhabited by residents just like Elena. However, when outsider Mia Warren rents a house from the Richardsons, it becomes apparent that Mia is not someone who subscribes to the local mentality. She and her daughter become something of a spectacle, not only to the Richardsons, but to the whole community.
IT IN THEATERS SEPTEMBER 8
Get Ready to Float You don’t have to be an avid Stephen King reader to appreciate the latest screen adaptation of one of his most notorious published works. “It” (2017) is based on King’s novel of the same name and promises to bring fear and unease to every movie theater brave enough to run “It”-s reels. This film is the first of a two-part series, with the second being released next year. “It” focuses on The Loser’s Club, a group of childhood friends who—think—they defeat a nightmarish foe responsible for bringing evil to their hometown of Derry, Maine. Actor Bill Skarsgard (The Divergent Series films) brings to life the latest version of the sadistic clown, Pennywise.

YOUNG SHELDON CBS SEPTEMBER 25
Meet a Budding Theoretical Physicist With narration reminiscent of a “Wonder Years” episode—but with a comedic twist—“Young Sheldon” explores the life of nine-year-old Sheldon Cooper, who grows up to become the sarcastic scientist on “The Big Bang Theory.” In this new CBS sitcom, adult Cooper (Jim Parsons) will narrate trips down memory lane, as each episode explores young Sheldon’s place in a blue-collar, church-going family. Young Sheldon’s character, played by Iain Armitage (“Big Little Lies”), joins a cast that includes Zoe Perry, Lance Barber, Raegan Revord and Montana Jordan.

FLOURISHING IN THE FACE OF FAILURE October 13, 2017 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The Marq Southlake | Catered by Scratch Kitchen Merrilee Kick has worked the red carpets of the Cannes Film Festival as a magazine editor, anchored the drive-time newscasts for CBS Radio and operated a marketing company producing hundreds of voice-over spots for television—all before becoming a teacher at Plano West High School. While grading papers one afternoon Kick had an idea that literally drove her to drink. Her idea to build a better beverage in a ball has caught on, so much so that she now calls the shots as the president of Carrollton-based BuzzBallz and Southern Champion LLC, the $20 million premium wine and spirits companies she founded in 2009. Join Southlake Style in the follow-up to its first successful luncheon and be inspired by Kick, an Ernst & Young Entrepreneurial Winning Woman of 2016, and her message that the difference between failure and luck is found in the amount of effort applied to learning from your mistakes.

CARROLL GRAD LAUNCHED COMPANY TO HELP DISTRESSED TREES FLOURISH Jorge Gaona wants to see every North Texas tree flourish. So the 2011 Carroll grad and UNT student launched a company, TreeNewal. The tree-care company specializes in helping distressed trees by solving tree issues at the roots. “We use a rootaeration process with a patented IBA pellet used to promote cell division in root hairs,” said Gaona. “This helps trees and their root systems by optimizing their ability to intake water and nutrients. TreeNewal works to help trees reclaim their health, rather than removing them.” Aside from saving North Texas trees, for every tree that TreeNewal treats, a tree is planted through the National Forest Foundation. TreeNewal has donated more than 200 trees to national forests across America. Feedstore BBQ & More is one of Southlake’s oldest retail establishments, which started back in the 1950s. In 1997, Bill and Phyllis Lafavers bought Southlake Feed and Tack. Soon after, all the animals started movin’ out, and all these great folks started movin’ in. In April 2001, the Lafavers family opened Feedstore BBQ. With some family recipes and the support of the great community of Southlake and all our surrounding neighbors, we’ve been serving up the best Texas BBQ & More ever since. Come on in, but if you don’t have time, call ahead for takeout. If you’re having a party, special event or just feeding lots of folks, let us cater. f all the rooms in your home, your child’s bedroom is perhaps the most multifunctional. The space typically sports a bed, dresser and a closet filled to bursting with clothes, books, toys and treasures. And, once your offspring start school, they’re expected to complete their homework in the same space. So now the room serves as an office/bedroom/playroom/storage unit. When you consider that children’s bedrooms are often some of the smallest rooms in a home, making the most of every square foot is crucial.
CHOOSE COLOR WISELY To avoid the trap of repainting your child’s room every time he or she announces a new favorite color, start with a clean neutral base paint for the walls, preferably in eggshell or satin for easy cleaning. Benjamin Moore Downpour Blue (2063-20) might be too dark for all four walls, but serves as a great tone for one accent wall when teamed up with soft gray or white. It also looks beautiful with bold accessories. If your girl loves pink but you’re afraid of the walls appearing too much like cotton candy, opt for Benjamin Moore Sun Washed (2169-70). When paired with pink bedding, the walls give off the slightest blush of color. For a beachy vibe that works for boys and girls of all ages, try Sherwin-
Williams Sea Salt (SW 6204) for a gray-based blue/green that is oh-so-calming. Once you’ve chosen a soft paint color, layer in accessories and bedding that allow your child’s personality to shine through. Keep in mind the primary function of the room is to provide a place to sleep, so limit bright colors. In other words, just say no to neon and let warm hues envelop your babes as they drift off to dreamland.

Look for beds with built-in drawers, seating with storage and bookcases that can accommodate bins. A desk might be needed for your tween or teen, but only if they will use it. Personal Craft THE PICO BY PICOBREW DEMYSTIFIES THE POPULAR HOBBY OF HOMEBREWING

veryone’s family has tall tales. Making moonshine on the back porch during Prohibition might be one of those stories your great-grandfather wants you to forget. Although personal distilleries are still frowned upon (not to mention illegal), brewing beer in the comfort of your kitchen is a popular hobby. However, as any seasoned homebrewer will tell you, it’s not that easy. That is, it didn’t used to be. Then the Pico countertop appliance by PicoBrew arrived on the scene, making the homebrewing process simple. Spend more time enjoying the grains of your labor and less time scouring the web for how-to videos. When your Pico arrives at your doorstep, and after you have unboxed the five smaller boxes, be prepared to read a lengthy manual. At first glance, the steps might seem overwhelming, but PicoBrew holds your hand throughout the entire process. From product assembly and prepping the kegs to fermenting and racking your brew, the
Pico makes brewing your first batch of beer as easy as using a single cup coffee-making appliance. In fact, the process is very similar. However, instead of using a pod filled with your favorite medium roast, a PicoPak contains the hops, grain and yeast needed to brew your own craft beer. The Pico by PicoBrew is programmable using a touchscreen, making separate timers and food prep thermometers obsolete. The Pico uses an automated process that can be monitored using the Wi-Fi feature and your smartphone, tablet or computer. It comes with one brewing keg, one serving keg and one PicoPak, along with the remaining accessories needed to assemble and use the appliance. A CO2 regulator, which is the quick method of carbonation, is not included, but may be purchased on the PicoBrew website. Additional PicoPaks can be bought on the site as well, and there is an option to customize a PicoPak to create your own unique beer recipe. As a side note, the appliance may also be used for cooking sous vide. You can make your steak and eat it— paired with your favorite homebrew—too!

Kim lost 46 pounds!†
Kim, actual patient.
This is my third go around with Medi-Weightloss®. Originally my thought was to lose weight just to look better. I never grasped the full meaning of making a lifestyle change. Therefore, my first two attempts failed. With my daughter heading off to college in a few years, I began preparing to be an emptynester. As I prepared, I realized I had just five pictures of my daughter and I together. I avoided the camera because of my weight. Now, with a different frame of mind and motivation, I was determined to start taking pictures I could be proud of with my daughter. In April 2014, I began the program for the third time. My success has been unbelievable. I am down from a size 14 to a size 4. I will be starting Wellness soon hoping to be in a size 2. It took me looking back over the years, with much regret about avoiding pictures, to get motivated. Now I get to have small disagreements with my daughter about who is going to wear what outfit because we are now in the same size. Thank you Medi-Weightloss® for the continued support, motivation, and encouragement. I’m looking forward to many awesome pictures in the future!

Enjoy a taste of the season through a pick-your-own fruit experience
A
h, autumn. The perfect time of year to go apple-picking and pumpkin-patching. North Texas is home to many charming, pick-yourown venues to discover fall’s bounty—and they offer much more than fragrant fruits and golden-hued gourds. Before you and your family head out for an afternoon at the farm, orchard or vineyard, be prepared for the unexpected; each fall’s bounty is a surprise. “There’s nothing 100 percent about farming; you’re at the mercy of the weather,” says Dixie Norwood, co-owner of Hidden Honey Farm in Waxahachie, about one hour south of Southlake. It’s a sentiment echoed by all of the local farmers we interviewed for this story. It is impossible to predict how successful a harvest will be. So, go ahead and grab your planner to jot down the pick-your-own places you’d like to visit. Don’t forget to bring your patience, just in case Mother Nature has another idea. Seasonal Staples When you think of fall, it’s natural to dream of your next slice of pumpkin pie. Or perhaps a hot-from-the-oven biscuit, spread with homemade jelly. Just in time for holiday baking season comes Texas’ best time to pick delectable eats that pair perfectly with cozy family gatherings. Craving pecans? Better head about 45 minutes east to Sunnyvale Pecan Orchard, where owner Mike Sage has been shaking his eight acres of trees for 20 years, producing up to five tons of Texas Golden Pecans each year. “People really enjoy coming out here and getting away from it all,” Sage says. “It’s a great stress reliever.” Sage welcomes a mix of anxious pickers whose ages range from young children to retired adults, all equally excited to stake their claim on the most perfect pecans they can find. Some, he says, even have their favorite tree they return to year after year. Picking begins in November, with availability up through mid-December, though Sage advises calling for the latest information on current production before your visit.

If you’re up for a road trip, pecan paradise continues at Alford Family Farm about an hour and a half outside Southlake. This 110-acre family farm in Emory features about 350 pecan trees. A labor of love between Tom and Patty Alford and their son, Michael, the flourishing farm features everything from blackberries and blueberries in the spring to plenty of pecans in the fall. Animal lovers will also appreciate the chance to see the farm’s furry and feathered creatures, available to view throughout you-pick season. If you’re searching for your prize pumpkin and the grocery store’s selection is less than inspiring, try a local pumpkin patch. You’ll discover an array of picture-perfect pumpkins ripe for the picking. To add to the experience, some farms such as Sweet Berry Farm in Marble Falls (about three hours south) and Wild Berry Farm in Sadler (about an hour north of Southlake) offer festival-style activities—a great reason to make a day of it. “Last year was our first year for the fall festival, and it blew us away how many people came to it,” shares Lauren Bloomer, co-owner of Wild Berry Farm. In addition to an acre of pick-your-own pumpkins, the farm offers an acre of pick-your-own sunflowers, a corn maze, hill slide and hayrides. For more family fun, head to Sweet Berry Farm’s Harvest of Fall Fun, which started in 2001 as a way to promote learning about local food production. “We have tons of activities for people of all ages,” shares Lacy Garcia, event manager at Sweet Berry Farm and daughter of co-owners, Dan and Gretchen Garcia. “There are pumpkins to choose from, mazes to navigate and you have to visit our Scarecrow Island Hayride.”
Though it’s a bit of a drive—nearly three hours—to get to east Texas’ O’Farrell Country Vineyards in Douglasville, why not make a road trip out of your you-pick experience? The family vineyard and winery has a strong history, operating out of a tasting room that incorporates the remains of the old O’Farrell community school built in the 1870s. Whether you’re a history buff or not, you’re bound to appreciate the fine wine selection and pick-your-own muscadine grapes. Lyle McBride serves as vineyard manager at O’Farrell Country Vineyards, and says it’s both nostalgia and taste that bring customers from as far as Houston and parts of Louisiana to pick their 14 varieties of muscadines. “A lot of folks love the idea of picking their own grapes and going straight from the vine and into whatever they’re making—or just into their mouths!” McBride says. “It doesn’t get fresher than that.” Bring a cooler to transport your grapes and gloves for picking, and O’Farrell’s will provide the rest. And here’s an insider tip McBride shared with us: Many of the best grapes are on the underside of the vines. Shhh …
Fresh From the Farm
Everything tastes better homegrown, and fresh veggies in North Texas are no exception. Though not offering the pick-your-own experience of their fruit siblings, you still don’t want to miss out on mouthwatering vine-ripened tomatoes, squash, okra and zucchini. You can shop Alford Family Farm’s samplings at local farmers markets in Coppell, Denton and St. Michael’s in Dallas. At Hidden Honey Farm in Waxahachie, a large garden offers a variety of fall vegetables on any given day. But it’s their honey and eggs that really make this local farm unique. For co-owners Dixie Norwood and Tim Miller, their honey production is more than a business opportunity; it’s a means for teaching others. “In the fall we offer a bee class, explaining the basics of beekeeping,” Norwood says. “We show parts of the hive, help people who want to see our bees, and answer any questions.” Hidden Honey Farm also offers fresh eggs for sale from their free-roaming chickens, which peck their way around the farm as they please. On any given day, you’ll also find vegetables, such as zucchini and squash, though Norwood recommends visiting her Facebook page to see what’s currently available. “We’re at the mercy of how much rain we’ve gotten and what’s out there,” Norwood says.
The Juiciest Berries
In the mood for some of North Texas’ juiciest berries? You’ll have to wait a while… but it’s worth it! Many of the area’s top pick-your-own farms offer extraordinary crops of blueberries, blackberries and strawberries, which generally peak in spring and early summer. Timing depends on the weather, and the milder the winter, the earlier the berries. In the spring, you’ll find blueberries aplenty at Blueberry Hill Farms, which is just shy of a two-hour drive

from Southlake. It specializes in this sweet, succulent berry that’s both packed with nutrients and irresistibly delicious. Rachel Jones’ parents bought the Edombased farm 17 years ago, and have focused on harvesting this summertime favorite ever since. “My parents bought it because youpick farms were going extinct, and it was something we had done as kids,” Jones says. Now almost two decades later, the farm welcomes at least 6,000 families each summer (usually Memorial Day weekend through end of July) to see what the pick-your-own-fruit experience is all about. “It’s very family-oriented, and really lets kids get an idea of what it’s like to pick your own fruit,” Jones says. In addition to picking blueberries, the farm has just about every blueberry-flavored treat you can imagine, from blueberry lemonade to blueberry frozen yogurt and even blueberries ’n cream pies. Along with their fall offerings, Alford Family Farm is also a great place to find homegrown blueberries, as well as blackberries and strawberries. “Once people come out and taste the blueberries, they’re usually pretty hooked,” Alford says. “It’s just wholesome family fun.” While the fall season is just getting started, strawberry season will be back before you know it. Find some of North Texas’ best strawberries at Sweet Berry Farm, where they promise “the redder the better!” Or get your fill at Alford Family Farm or Wild Berry Farm. And rest assured that Hidden Honey Farm is already getting prepared, after a successful first year of offering you-pick strawberries in 2017, even adding vertical planting stones to offer a row that’s wheelchair accessible. “Every year you learn something new,” Norwood says. For her, the best joy in life has been watching the faces children as they bite into the strawberries for the first time. “Their little faces are just filled with red juice, and they taste so much different than what you find in the store,” Norwood says. “The only thing we had on them this year was rain; we didn’t even fertilize them.” No pesticides. No fuss. Just simple, homegrown goodness. How delicious is that? SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

BEAUTY-QUEEN-TURNED-BAKER GIVES SOUTHLAKE A TASTE OF EUROPEAN TREATS
S
tephanie Keusch, sweet artist and owner of Bella Bakery, didn’t always know how to cook. But when the former Miss Indiana was whisked away to Italy with her husband, she discovered a passion for baking—in particular, for baking pretty pastries. Now, the self-taught baker and baking-show competitor is spoiling Southlake with some of the loveliest treats imaginable.
I FIRST DEVELOPED A LOVE FOR BAKING WHEN: I moved to Europe with my husband. We lived in a beautiful area just north of Venice. I didn’t know how to cook anything but chicken and steamed broccoli, so I had to teach myself to cook and bake. Once our two daughters were born, I wanted to make birthday cakes for them and cakes for my friends. I taught myself how to be a pastry chef and Bella Bakery was born. I DECIDED TO PUT MYSELF OUT THERE BY: competing in “Bake Off Italia,” a national baking contest in Italy. I came in second place. Right after that show, my husband changed jobs and we landed in Southlake. I thought the best way to get involved here was to continue doing the same things I was doing in Italy. I’ve changed nothing—I use only the best products I can get my hands on. I CAN ALWAYS FIND THE BEST INGREDIENTS AT: Central Market or Amazon—they have everything I need. I’ve been back to Italy a few times since we moved to Southlake, and when I return, my suitcase is always jammed with different gelatins, jams and cheeses. I’m becoming a professional importer! MY RECIPES ARE INSPIRED BY: my time in Italy. I like to make things that aren’t only good to eat but also pretty to look at. That’s where the name comes from—Bella means beautiful. I particularly like to make macarons. I went to Paris to learn how to make them because macarons are notoriously difficult to make.
I DO ALL MY BAKING IN MY: kitchen at home. I like it and dislike it at the same time. My kids [ages seven and four] are here, so I can keep a close eye on them. But it can be hard not having a designated place to go. One day I’d like to have a commercial kitchen. I’m operating at the smallest circle of my ability. These days, I like to do a lot of my baking at night around 11 or midnight. I put on my headphones and listen to cheesy ’80s music like Wilson Phillips or New Kids on the Block. MY FAMILY LOVES WHEN I BAKE: really anything! Any time they can get their hands on something, they’re happy. My youngest daughter will swallow an entire macaron without chewing. They both get the best birthday cakes. My oldest daughter had a fantastic piñata cake last year—it was a tall cake that spilled a sea of M&Ms when I cut into it. My husband doesn’t eat sweets, but the savory stuff is his wheelhouse. He loves chicken pot pie. BAKING IS A GREAT WAY TO: make friends! My client base is definitely expanding. It’s mostly word-of-mouth now. I’ve been doing free demonstrations at Williams Sonoma and connecting with other moms. I love how strong the mom connection is in Southlake. I TEND TO BE BUSIEST: any time people want to spoil teachers. Teacher appreciation is busy and so is Christmas. My ovens are cranking out biscotti and all kinds of treats. WHEN I’M NOT BAKING, I’M: spending time with my family. We love to be outside together, whether we’re swimming in the pool or running around in the backyard. THE MOST REWARDING PART OF WHAT I DO IS: getting to put a little of each customer in every order. Each treat is tailor-made. You can buy cookies and cakes anywhere, but when you support a small business like me, you get a better experience. I put my passion into it.

A New Breed of Steakhouse CORRIENTES 348 SIZZLES WITH SOUTH AMERICAN FLAIR

exans are all about that beef life. There’s certainly no shortage of topnotch steakhouses in Dallas, but Corrientes 348 stands apart. The upscale, 10,000-squarefoot establishment is the first Argentinian steakhouse in Big D. It’s also the first location in the United States for the family-owned steakhouse, which operates six restaurants in South America. After a meal here, we think you’ll agree: Argentinians know how to get their meat on. Corrientes 348 captures the essence of Latin American dining—meat, more meat and plenty of fresh vegetables to share among friends. The meaty eatery is basically the opposite of a tapas restaurant. Instead of small plates, the steakhouse rolls out massive specialties to share with the table. Whether you opt for the half or full portion of any particular dish, you can count on classic Argentin-
ian fare prepared family-style with only the best ingredients. “We hope people fall in love with our unique Argentinian concept,” says Sidiclei Demartini, co-owner of Corrientes 348. “We intend to make this culture known in Dallas and bring a different atmosphere to the steakhouse concept.” The restaurant hits the high notes in every respect, from the regionally sourced prime beef to the outstanding sides to a first-rate wine list, which spotlights malbecs from Argentina and cabernets from Chile. The central theme, though, is definitely meat, with menu options ranging from sirloin, rib eye, leg of lamb, pork chop and boneless chicken legs. The $75 bonein tomahawk steak is a meaty masterpiece that gets rolled on a cart to your table and carved in front of you.

LOCALFLAVOR review Corrientes 348 is undoubtedly a carnivore’s dream, but the side dishes are also worth celebrating. Nearly every dish is made from scratch, including the dough used in the restaurant’s signature potato dish, Papatasso. One of the restaurant’s standout starters, Empanadas 348, will send your taste buds into overdrive. A freshly made empanada is filled with beef, egg, green olive and fresh herbs for a tantalizing taste of South American cuisine. It’s flaky and light, and a good sign of the meal to come. Other indulgent sides include Pure de Papas (puréed mashed potatoes with roasted garlic, ground black pepper, Parmesan cheese and fresh herbs) and Papatasso Provenzal (crispy smashed potatoes topped with garlic and parsley). As for the vegetables, don’t miss the Cebolla Parrillera (grilled onions with fresh chimichurri) or Zapallito Parillero (grilled squash with garlic and herb sauce). Whatever happens to be on the table in front of them, Demartini wants guests to enjoy the entire experience. “We want you to feel like you’re part of the Argentinian culture,” he says. “Mostly, we want you to feel at home and to have lots of fun.” It’s impossible not to enjoy yourself here; the restaurant pours on exquisite service, steaks and wine. The space, designed with natural woods, interesting textures and pops of bright color, pays homage to the restaurant’s namesake: a famed street in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The food is similar to what’s served in the restaurant’s South American locations, but the Dallas restaurant is much more focused on the bar and kitchen, Demartini notes. Both are open so guests can enjoy the view and have the full experience of seeing chefs in action. The chefs appreciate the open concept, too. “Preparing and sharing traditional recipes and seeing the delight on our guests’ faces brings an incredible amount of joy not only to me, but to our entire team,” says Demartini. “We are very proud of our high-quality steaks.” Should you save room for something sweet, Corrientes 348 pulls out all the stops with traditional desserts such as tres leches cake and flan. We recommend the dulce-de-lechestuffed Argentinian crepes. This dessert is guilty pleasure at its finest. Corrientes 348 has a welcoming, comfortable vibe, but the menu prices definitely move it into special-occasion territory. Whether you stop in for lunch or dinner, the experience is worth every penny—everything at this Argentinian steakhouse is a wow.

Chef Eddy T. has arrived in the ’burbs. The chef lauded for masterminding Asian concepts in Dallas, Fort Worth and New York City has opened his latest venture, Sai Fine Asian Bistro, in Colleyville. The intimate, upscale restaurant specializes in clever Asian cuisine that merges multiple cultures and flavors. Want Chinese food? How about Thai or Japanese fare? Experience it all in ways you wouldn’t even consider at Sai. The refined dinner house, which landed on Zagat’s list of “Hottest Restaurants in Dallas” over the summer, brings forth Chef Eddy’s most popular culinary creations from his previous restaurants along with fresh interpretations of Asian classics. Just don’t expect to find the usual renditions here—the menu embraces creativity. It also features a surprising amount of the number eight. Every menu item ends in 88 cents because, according to Chinese culture, eight is a lucky number. Turn the eight on its side and it represents infinity. It’s a fun fact in case you doubt Sai’s authenticity. To kick off your culinary adventure, the restaurant offers signature starters such as calamari (served with Thai chili sweet plum sauce) and edamame (Japanese soy beans with truffled sea salt). But if you really want to venture into uncharted waters, try the Lobster Wonton (fried wonton with lobster, cream and cheese). It’s a delightful departure from the typical crab wonton and a wondrous combination of crispy and velvety textures. For the main course, don’t miss the Massaman Short Rib. Certified Angus beef short rib is braised for 48 hours in Massaman curry with coconut milk, onions, cherry tomatoes, roasted peanuts, bell peppers and sweet potatoes. This dish is indeed a labor of love. You also can’t go wrong with the Pad Thai. A mountain of stir-fried rice noodles is peppered with shallots, eggs, bean sprouts, scallion, roasted peanut and tamarind sauce for a compellingly spicy entrée. On the sweet side, Sai entices with unique offerings such as Lemongrass Panna Cotta (served with pistachio sponge cake and berries) and Banana Wonton (a crisp wonton with caramelized bananas, vanilla ice cream, cinnamon and melted caramel). However, the Green Tea Cheesecake with chocolate Florentine, macerated strawberries and a meringue crust captured our heart. Subtle hints of green tea add depth to an already remarkable cheesecake. Sai Fine Asian Bistro caters to those with discerning tastes—and to those who just want something a little different. Stop into this nearby gem for a taste of Eastmeets-West cuisine.

Fall’s Natural Beauty POPULAR PLACES TO SEE FALL FOLIAGE IN THE UNITED STATES
P
ack your bags and start your engines—it’s time for a road trip north of the border. The onset of fall is the perfect time to sightsee your way along the coast. Leaf peeping, as it can be called, is a spectator sport that you can participate in from the front seat of your sedan or the well-traveled trails of a forest. Contrary to popular belief among nature enthusiasts and amateur gawkers alike, there is more than meets the northern eye. Here’s a rundown of coast-tocoast locations to behold one of the season’s natural beauties: the changing colors of fall foliage
East Coast What the Catskill Mountains lack in majesty, they make up for in the beauty of their flora. Located in the southeastern portion of New York, The Catskills

are the ideal place to see fall foliage on the East Coast region. Occupying four different counties, including Delaware, Greene, Sullivan and Ulster, the Catskill Mountains are just short of a two-hour drive north of New York City. The Great Northern Catskill Mountains are home to rolling landscapes of indigenous vegetation that includes oaks, firs and spruces. These are the trees responsible for producing the vibrantly hued foliage during the fall. Toss the picnic basket and blanket to experience a different way to feast your eyes on the fall foliage of The Catskills. Located in the Great Northern Catskill region of Greenville, New York, in the, Sunny Hill Viking Obstacle Course will blow your mind. With 5.5 miles of 35 obstacles including rope climbs and log balancing, this is an Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) World Championship qualified course. Open from spring to fall, the facility is for training champions and challenging amateurs. Part of the Sunny Hill Resort & Golf Course, the course does not charge an admission fee if you are a guest of the allinclusive resort. VisitTheCatskills.com, SunnyHill.com

BOARDINGPASS fall foliage
There is no shortage of autumn beauty in the northeast United States, and there are plenty of small-town America leaf-peeping locations. In Stowe, Vermont, it’s the golden leaves of the sugar maples, and in Salem, Massachusetts, it’s the scarlet leaves that perfectly frame century-old homes.
West Coast A journey to the West Coast calls for a trip to the Willamette Valley in Oregon. Considered to be the agricultural heart of the coastal state, the valley begins just south of Portland and stretches 150 miles south. The valley has scenic highways and byways lined with breathtaking fall foliage and meadows of seasonal flowers. However, there are other ways to catch a glimpse of the colorful leaves. Silver Falls State Park is located in Silverton, Oregon, about 15 miles east of the state’s capital city of Salem. A trip to the 9,200-acre park should include a hike along the Trail of Ten Falls that will have you standing in awe behind the South Falls, a 177-foot curtain of water. If you’d rather leave the hiking and foraging to your outdoorsy friends, experience the finer side of Willamette Valley. Agriculture includes vineyards, and it’s only natural that you’d find more than 700 of them in the valley. More than two-thirds of Oregon’s wineries and vineyards call this region home. Grapes that grow in the cool climate of Willamette Valley have gone on to produce award-winning Pinots, Chardonnays and Rieslings. TravelOregon.com, OregonStateParks. org, OregonWineCountry.org Again, a drive or flight to the West Coast of the United States should not include just one destination. However, your best chances of seeing fall foliage in the Northwest are excursions to the valleys, canyons and lakes of the region. For example, drive through the southern Lake Tahoe area among the Sierra Nevada range in California, or find a walking trail within the Hoh Rainforest of Olympic National Park in Washington State.
The South…Sort Of Although fall foliage sightseeing is usually thought of as an activity best done in northern states, there are a few gems south of the Mason-Dixon line, such as Bardstown, Kentucky. A visit to the small town of 11,200 during the fall yields a glimpse of nature’s autumn palette. Of course you’d expect to see trees enveloped in yellow- and orange-colored leaves lining the streets of Bardstown. However, serious fall foliage gazers can get the best views aboard My Old Kentucky Dinner Train, which runs through the countrysides and hills of Kentucky’s Bourbon Country. The dinner train has a lengthy history, but it was established as a tourist attraction in 1988. The 37-mile round trip takes passengers through the Bernheim Forest and Jim Beam Distillery property, to Limestone Springs and back. VisitBardstown.com, KYDinnerTrain.com

t’s a tale as old as time—a boy and girl fall in love. But this time, the fairy tale is played out on stage as a stunning ballet performance. Catch Texas Ballet Theater’s breathtaking rendition of Beauty and the Beast this fall, taking place at the Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth. The show is choreographed by Lew Christensen, composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and stars Carolyn Judson as Belle and Alexander Kotelenets as the Beast. The talented musicians in the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra will accompany the dancers. People of all ages will enjoy this captivating tale about a curse that turns a spoiled prince into a terrifying beast. Cheer on Belle and the enchanted dishes as they dance around the castle. This expressive ballet will excite you, scare you and make you fall in love all in one night. The brown-haired beauty of the show, Judson, joined Texas Ballet Theater in 2003. She has plenty of experience playing princesses and powerful women, as she has been featured in the title roles of “Cinderella” and “Sleeping Beauty,” as well as “Romeo and Juliet” and “Cleopatra.” Two of her favorite ballets include “Three Preludes” and “Image,” both choreographed by Ben Stevenson. Her beastly co-star, Kotelenets, also joined Texas Ballet Theater in 2003. Some of his favorite roles include playing Romeo and Tybalt in “Romeo and Juliet,” Frederick in “Dracula,” Peer in “Peer Gynt,” the prince in “Swan Lake” and the prince in “Sleeping Beauty.” It is a magical performance, up until the last rose petal drops.
